Free Far Infrared Sauna Session with First Visit Todd's

My name is Todd Patterson. I had Gulf War Syndrome and was plagued with many symptoms. I had no energy, was pale and swollen, and in terrible pain. I had often considered ending my life because the pain was unbearable. Janet, the owner, and I have been friends for a while. She had been trying to get me to Circle of Life for quite some time to detox my body. Finally convinced, I arrived at the Circle of Life Spa for my first of many wraps, sauna sessions, and massages. I had some difficult and emotional periods as my body detoxed. Janet worked on changing my diet to encourage an alkaline environment which promotes health and healing. Janet and Carla were right there supporting me through it all. ďż˝ After two weeks, the three of us stood in the foyer of the spa hugging and crying as I prepared to go home, a healthy man. I never thought I would be pain free, yet here I stood feeling amazing. My swelling was gone and I looked vibrant because I had color and energy. Most importantly, I no longer felt pain. I was a vision of health that none of us had seen in quite a while. Today, my wife and I are adopting a baby girl from China. I can be the father I want to be because I am healthy. I thank Janet and Carla for giving so much of themselves to help me heal.

STORY

LETTER

Dear Readers, December can be a poignant, challenging month – too many things to do, too many visiting friends and relatives and far too many emotional ups and down. During these times, most everyone experiences a sense of feeling drained and exhausted, wondering where and how they lost contact with the deeper, more meaningful holiday spirit of giving and sharing. It seems to take a conscious effort for us to reconnect with this meaning.

As temperatures drop and the reds and oranges of Fall disappear, holly brings welcome color to a cold and pale landscape. For over 2000 years holly has been used as a holiday decoration, a tea and herbal, and was believed to have mystical powers. The Celts believed that placing holly leaves above their doors would keep evil spirits from entering their homes and offer a hiding place for fairies. Holly also served as a good luck charm for men (ivy was for women). Early Christians associated the plant with religious symbols and uses, believing that the holly berries were stained red after the crucifixion of Christ and that a holly branch was used to make Christ’s crown of thorns. Among 150 species of holly, English (Ilex aquifolium) and American holly (Ilex opaca) are grown as holiday decorations. Yerba mate (Ilex paraguayensis) is also a member of the holly family and has a long history of medicinal and herbal use in South America. In Europe, holly was once used to treat such diverse problems as colic, fever, rheumatism, smallpox, and gout. Indigenous peoples of the southeastern US used the yaupon tree (Ilex vomitoria) to make a hallucinogenic beverage. Today, many cultures still brew caffeine-rich teas, including the Chinese, who brew Ku Ding tea from young holly leaf buds. Despite its attractive look, people and pets should stay away from the tempting holly plant. Both the fruit and leaves contain a mixture of the alkaloid theobromine, caffeine, and glycosides. Theobromine is also in chocolate and cocoa and is poisonous to dogs. In small doses it stimulates the nervous system but in large doses it acts as a depressant. Consumption of holly berries causes vomiting and diarrhea, drowsiness, coma, and death in severe cases. Twenty berries may be a lethal dose for humans and pets. Conversely, holly is an important avian winter food source. Beautiful, mystical, exotic or lethal, holly is a bright spot in our winter world. December 2007

Here in beautiful Northern Nevada and California, our surrounding foothills, mountains and desert make this effort a little easier, and for this, we are truly blessed. In a matter of minutes, by foot or wheel, we can arrive in quiet, serene and magnificent country, breathe the clean air and reconnect with our more essential and natural selves. We hope you’ll invest some time doing this during your holidays—to increase your sense of fun and participation in this amazing life with which we are enjoined. Being in quiet surroundings, away from the crowds can do a great deal to increase our tolerance and compassion toward our fellows, not only during the holidays, but all year long. Meanwhile, we want to take this opportunity again to thank our readers, advertisers, contributors and friends – everyone who participates and is enjoined in the Healthy Beginnings world – for your good wishes and continued support. You truly make it all worthwhile. Healthy Beginnings will continue to bring you the most useful and fact-based, natural health and related information that we can, so that we can all make better lifestyle choices for ourselves, our families and our animal companions. And we will always continue to improve our product and service. It is our great pleasure. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays to all, and may we all work together toward a peaceful and wonderful New Year, this day and everyday. With our warmest wishes, Carole, Dawn and the Healthy Beginnings Staff

Barton Memorial Hospital has implemented a crucial tool in saving lives: A Rapid Response Team that’s available 24/7. The Rapid Response Team (RRT) may be summoned at any time by any staff member who is concerned about a patient’s condition in departments other than the Emergency Department. Barton’s RRT includes an ICU nurse and a respiratory therapist report their findings to a Hospitalist (a physician who specializes in treating patients in a hospital setting) or the patient’s physician. The Rapid Response Team plays a major role in preventing clinical deterioration into cardiac arrest or other adverse events. This dramatically improves patient safety and cuts down on the number of patients who require being transferred to ICU.

Genetically Engineered Corn Toxin Affecting Aquatic Ecosystems A new study in the recent issue of the Journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that a toxin in genetically engineered Bt corn is contaminating waterways near farm fields. The toxin is killing caddis flies, a valuable food resource for higher organisms like fish and amphibians. This genetically engineered corn was approved for use by the US environmental Protection Agency a decade ago, but the agency never tested its impact on caddis flies, which are common insects in areas where these crops are grown. Since its inception, the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) has called for a halt on GE crops, based on a current lack of data. Learn more: http://www.organicconsumers.org

Conscientiousness Appears To Reduce Risk of Alzheimers A Rush University Medical Center study followed and surveyed nearly 1,000 people from 1994 to 2006. The results showed that the people whose personalities were meticulous, self-disciplined and productive tended to remain disease free. In fact the participants with the highest scores in conscientiousness were found to have an 89% lower chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease than those who scored 28 or lower. When exercise and intellectual engagement were taken into account the participants still showed a 54% lower incidence of developing the disease. Complex factors remain unknown about Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists may never determine exactly how environmental toxins, dietary choices, exercise, behavior and other variables interact to cause the disease. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/health/dn12717-selfdiscipline-mayreduce-alzheimers-risk.html

Neurobics:

A Workout For Your Brain By Steven Gillman

N

eurobics is a term invented by Lawrence Katz and Manning Rubin to describe exercises that help the brain stay fit. Specific types of sensory stimuli and activities, especially those that involve non-routine actions and thoughts, produce more of the chemicals that encourage growth of new dendrites and neurons in the brain. Routine activities become so automatic that they are done largely unconsciously (ever get up in the morning and walk to the kitchen before you

are really conscious?). This means they require less activity in the brain, and exercise it less.

Therefore, a neurobic activity should do one or more of the following:

1. Involve one or more senses in a new context.

2. Involve your full attention. 3. Break your routine in a significant way.

Neurobics do not have to be complicated. They also don’t require that you set aside special times for them. As long as they follow the guidelines above, many simple activities make for good brain exercises, and can be worked into your normal day.

Some Brain Exercises or Neurobics Learn braille. This is a tough one, but learning to read with your fingers definitely involves one of your senses in a new context. Do something in a new environment. Go to a new park, or a new store. Travel, by the way, seems to slow age-related mental decline. Leave the lights off. Get around your home by memory and feel. This certainly fully engages your attention, but be careful of course. New odors in the morning. Have new odors, like a bottle of mint extract ready to smell first thing in the morning, to “wake up” your brain. Shower with your eyes closed. Your other senses become more active when you cannot see, and a shower engages several senses.

December 2007

Brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand. This is difficult for some of us, and requires full attention the first time you try it. Wear different clothes. Ever notice how you feel differently when you wear different clothes. You may think differently as well. Give it a try. Choose to respond differently. Catch yourself in a normal and mostly unconscious response to a situation, and choose to respond in a different (preferably better) way. Take a new route to work. It doesn’t have to be a longer route - just different. You may even find a faster way to work once you break your routine. Act confident. In a situation you are unsure about, choose to act confidently. You’ll notice that your mind gets very active once you adopt the assumption that you will know what to do. Learn to distinguish coins using only your sense of touch. This brain exercise can be a way to kill time when waiting for an appointment. If you really want a challenge, see if you can distinguish paper currency denominations by touch. Of course following the simple guidelines above (involve your full attention, use one or more of your senses in a new context, or break your routine in a significant way) you can invent your own neurobics routine. Have some fun with these brain exercises. References: http://www.neurobics.com/ http://www.workman.com/products/9780761110521/

ody Wisdom, founded and owned by Sally LeDuc, sheds a whole new light on Physical Therapy. To begin, the office itself is painted in a serene sage green and the waiting room greets you with sounds of running water that help relax the mind. While you’re waiting, settle into the Zero Gravity chair and let your tension melt away. After your short sojourn in the waiting room, you will find that the rest of the office is similarly inviting to your senses. Each private healing room has a unique theme such as “Transformation” or “Wisdom” depicted by a mural painted on the wall. Once you have become acclimated to your surroundings, you may find that your body is centered and prepared for the healing process. This overall experience truly manifests the concept behind Body Wisdom. Sally wanted to provide a comfortable, calm setting that offers an integrative approach to healing. Along with her staff, Sally

Subtle signs of issues that might trigger a specific problem or anything that may be aggravating it are being sought. The goal is to help each patient find a path to healing that will easily transpose into their life. Sally would like to provide each patient with training in self-healing techniques. These lessons will provide healing tools that patients can incorporate into their daily lives, for the rest of their lives. The goal for each patient is to prevent problems from reoccurring. Sally speaks from experience. She has endured a significant number of injuries that she has successfully recovered from. Though her healing did not happen overnight, Sally maintained and continues to maintain a self-healing program on a routine basis. She can now participate in recreational activities that she has enjoyed throughout her life. Sally feels that her injury and recovery experience “helps her understand [her] patients better.” Even before experiencing any injuries, Sally wanted to help people heal. She began working in a Physical Therapy (PT) office in Vermont during high school. She went to college for PT in Vermont as well and has been working in the industry for 27 years. Sally moved to Reno in 1981 and was able to make her life long vision of Body Wisdom a reality in May 2007.

December 2007

Since then, she continues to merge new and innovative modalities into Body Wisdom’s current offering of services. For instance, many of the healing techniques use Pilates, Yoga, breathing, balance and Tai Chi. Sally also offers a Wellness class that is open to the public. Students learn a variety of skills that include relaxation, effective stretching and movement techniques. One of the latest techniques, called Visceral Motility Enhancements, works on problems with digestion, back pain and abdominal pain. Sally explained that patients come in with these problems and do not always respond to traditional treatment. Therefore, it may be an internal problem. The term visceral refers to your internal organs. If your organs are not moving properly, it can affect other areas of your body. Again, it’s looking at a patient’s specific problem from a different angle and utilizing a holistic approach to healing. Just as the purpose of Body Wisdom is “wholeness,” it is Sally’s aim to extend that ideal to her patients’ wellness. Along with her dedicated staff, she will give you all of the steps you need to find the path of healing that fits your lifestyle. It is up to you to do the rest; you have to “do your work, to be as good as you can be,” Sally said. Find ad on page 49.

CONSCIOUS HEALTH

Ayur veda History & Philosophy

BBC, UK 9-2006

I

n 2001 archaeologists made the discovery that the people of Indus Valley Civilization, even as early as c. 3300 BC, had knowledge of medicine and dentistry. Anthropologist Andrea Cucina from the University of Missouri-Columbia made the discovery when cleaning the teeth from human skeletal remains. Later research in the same area found evidence of teeth having been drilled, dating back 9,000 years.

History: Ayurveda is an ancient system of life (ayur) knowledge (veda) arising in India thousands of years ago. Ayurveda theory evolved from a deep understanding of creation. The great rishis or seers of ancient India came to understand creation through deep meditation and other spiritual practices. The rishis sought to reveal the deepest truths of human physiology and health. They observed the funda-

mentals of life, organized them into an elaborate system, and compiled India’s philosophical and spiritual texts, called Veda of knowledge. Ayurveda was first recorded in the Veda, the world’s oldest existing literature. The three most important Veda texts containing the original and complete knowledge of Ayurveda, believed to be over 1200 years old, is still in use today. These Ayurvedic teachings were customarily passed on orally from teacher to student for over 1000 years. The wisdom of Ayurveda is recorded in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India that reflects the philosophy behind Ayurveda and the depth within it. Ayurveda greatly influenced health care practices in the east and the west. By 400 AD Ayurvedic works were translated into Chinese; by 700 AD Chinese scholars were studying medicine in India at Nalanda University. Chinese medicine, herbology and Buddhist philosophy were also impacted by Ayurvedic knowledge. Having passed the test of experience it remains essentially the same now as at its inception, although numerous commentators over the centuries have added insight with their analyses. The philosophy of Ayurveda teaches a series of conceptual systems characterized by balance and disorder, health and disease. Disease/health results from the interconnectedness between the self, personality, and everything that occurs in the mental, emotional, and spiritual being. To be healthy harmony must exist between the purpose for healing, thoughts, feelings and physical action. Ayurveda is a careful integration of six important Indian philosophical systems, many physical/behavioral sciences, and the medical arts. One verse from an ancient authority says Ayurveda deals with what is good life and bad life, happiness and misery, that which supports or destroys, and the measurement of life. It works to heal the sick, to maintain health in the healthy, and to prevent disease in order to promote quality of life and long life. Health is defined as an experience of bliss/happiness in the soul, mind, and senses and balance of the body’s three

A River Runs Through Us The Silver-lining State

SHAKESPEARE

ANIMAL FUND

Needs Your Help.

The Shakespeare Animal Fund gives financial aid to low income, elderly & disabled pet owners who need help with emergency vet care.

We have a strong presence of mining history in our area. It’s an era of avid interest for me as the stories that settled the West are wrought with amazing breakthroughs and tragic endings. Life at that time held a quality of razor’s edge intensity and uncertainty that simultaneously intrigues me and makes me feel grateful that I don’t have to experience it. While those days are bygones I maintain a miner’s investment in the pursuit of living life discovering the hidden gems. An important vantage point for me is to take a silver-lining state of mind into my daily challenges. I beckon each of you to become a miner for silver- lining in the challenges present in your life. Ferret out the meaningful lessons in your life that will yield important insights about the occurrences in your life. I’ve been having a tough time fleshing out the silver lining in our consumptive lifestyles. Take a walk on the night before garbage pick-up. You’ll undoubtedly see excessive piles of stuff moving toward the dump. I urge each of you to take stock of your usage of “stuff” and take a double take on some of your routine purchases. Find that place of healthy compromise where you might resist purchasing 100 individual bottles of water and upgrade to a five-gallon jug. Or endorse a mason jar with a handmade sleeve and reuse it for your liquid needs. Consume less to simplify your life. When we take a larger perspective on our choices and needs we find many ways to behave more sustainably and efficiently. An examined life can be compared to the rapport between the sculptor and the stone block: guided actions that remove the externalities and distractions to reveal an animate underlying perfection. One sure-fire remedy to consuming aimlessly is to create a meaningful and interesting reason to be in the world. An inspired life has a sustained self-entertaining quality that doesn’t require much “stuff” to stimulate that upbeat feeling of being alive. We often times make huge compromises by constantly staying busy or entertained. We purchase time-consuming ephemeral distractions that will find a place in the trash within three-months time and then become seduced by the latest version of our chosen distractions. Our cultural tide convinces us that busy is associated with important and its presence reflects a certain “better’ social status. I’m here to counter this notion and represent Camp Less-is-More. This life is too precious to fritter away on the mundane and trivial sideline occurrences unless they pull you closer to your reason for being in the world. Get fired-up about the corner of creation that you alone occupy. In Buddhism it is taught that with each of us a world dies, the world that we’ve created with our life dies along with our passing. Being small and anxious is NOT your purpose. Answer this for yourself: What is the central question that your life revolves around? What are you living for? Enjoy the exquisite fruits of a consummate harvest that speaks distinctively to the desires and aspirations you hold dear to your heart.

Equine Physical Therapy Using

Acoustic Wave Therapy Equine physical therapy service at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine promotes more complete, less invasive remedies for lameness in horses. The Equine Physical Therapy Service at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine provides expanded follow-up for horses recovering from leg and back surgery or suffering from lameness due to racing or other sport injuries. The veterinary team employs established procedures and specialized equipment to deliver warmth and stimulate a healing blood flow to delicate leg structures, including bones, from outside the body. The centerpiece of the system is a unique unit that delivers high pressure pulses of acoustic wave energy to injured tendons, ligaments and bones in horses. The process, known as “extracorporeal shock wave therapy” (ESWT), is used in human medicine to break up kidney stones without surgery (lithotripsy). In horses, ESWT reaches and stimulates internal structures without anesthesia, reducing the time required per session and lowering risks incurred in anesthetizing a large animal. According to Jack Snyder, equine surgeon at the School of Veterinary Medicine, “This system is the only one in North America that can deliver this level of energy in the awake horse.” Other specialty equipment includes “cold” laser, electromagnetic pulsing, and therapeutic ultrasound instruments.

As they help horses, UC Davis veterinary faculty teaches professional students to apply the new techniques in well-rounded equine veterinary care. Researchers also have begun to formally evaluate these new tools and methods, Snyder says. “Working with these horses offers huge potential to contribute to our

knowledge of rehabilitation for the sport horse. We are seeing X-ray evidence that healing has taken place-in less time than with traditional means.” For more info, contact http://faculty.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/faculty/jrsnyder/

Promoting healing at the cellular level with less reliance on invasive procedures or drugs, according to Snyder, makes the use of such instruments a valuable tool in modern rehabilitation. Treatments ease pain so that animals can resume mild activity needed for full recovery without the complications of long confinement. Veterinarians also see promise for the repair of stress fractures, a particular problem in race horses. December 2007

What to Do About Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Shampoos: Sometimes its hard to find soaps and shampoos that don’t contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a detergent used in most sudsing products (and even toothpaste). SLS is a high volume synthetic chemical used in consumer products and regulated as a pesticide. A suspected gastrointestinal or liver toxicant, sodium lauryl sulfate can be drying and harsh for the hair and cause eye irritation (it may be related to cataracts), allergic reactions, and hair loss. According to the National Toxicology Program, it has shown moderate reproductive effects in experiments. It has not been tested for neurotoxicity. Sodium lauryl sulfate is not a recognized carcinogen. However, the chemical is frequently combined with TEA (triethanolamine), DEA (diethanolamine), or MEA (monoethanolamine), which can cause the formation of the carcinogenic substances, nitrosamines. To be on the safe side, add antioxidant vitamins A and C to any product that contains TEA, DEA, or MEA. The addition of antioxidants will help protect against nitrosamine contamination. For each 8 ounces of shampoo, add 1 teaspoon of vitamin C powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of vitamin A powder. References: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate • Environmental Working Group. Apple Cider Vinegar Remedies for Dogs & Cats too! Every home with dogs should have apple cider vinegar. It’s a remedy with multiple uses: alleviating allergies, arthritis, establishing correct pH balance. You can also give apple cider vinegar to cats and horses. If your dog has itchy skin, the beginnings of a hot spot, incessantly washes its feet, has smelly ears, or is picky about his food, the application of ACV may change things around, says Wendy Volhard. • For poor appetite, add to food - 1 tablespoon, two times a day for a 50 lb. dog. • For itchy skin or beginning hot spots, put ACV into a spray bottle, part the hair and spray on. • Any skin eruption will dry up in 24 hours and will save you having to shave the dog. If the skin is already broken, dilute ACV with an equal amount of water and spray on. • ACV is credited with maintaining the acid/alkaline balance of the digestive tract when taken internally. To check your dog’s pH balance, pick up some pH strips at the drug store, and first thing in the morning test the dog’s urine. If it is anywhere from 6.2 - 6.5, your dog’s system is where it should be. If it is 7.5 or higher, the diet you are feeding is too alkaline, and ACV will re-establish the correct balance. • After grooming, use a few drops in ears after cleaning them to avoid ear infections. • Other uses for ACV are the prevention of muscle weakness, cramps, feeling the cold, calluses on elbows and hock joints, constipation, bruising too easily, pimples on skin surfaces, twitching of facial muscles, sore joints, arthritis and pus in the urine. There are also reports that it is useful in the prevention of bladder and kidney stones. • ACV normalizes the pH levels of the skin, makes your dog unpalatable to even the nastiest of bacteria and you have a dog that smells like a salad, a small price to pay! W

ithout proper preparation your sprinkler system could be damaged by freezing temperatures. Here are some tips on how to prepare your irrigation system for winter conditions if you live in a region where it freezes.

1. Insulate your assets. Shut off the water supply to the irrigation system. The main shut off valve for your irrigation system needs to be protected against freezing. Make sure it is wrapped with insulation (foam insulation tape and a plastic bag) to protect it from harsh winter temperatures and prevent it from freezing. If you do not have a main shut off valve, you might consider installing one as a preventative investment. Also, any above ground piping needs to be insulated. Self-sticking foam-insulating tape or foam insulating tubes commonly found at home supply stores are fine..

2. Stay in control. If you have an automatic system then you will need to “shut down” the controller (timer). Most controllers have a “rainmode” which simply shuts off the signals to the valves. The controller continues to keep time, the programming information isn’t lost (start times, valve run times, etc.) and the clock continues to run throughout the winter. The only change is that the valves will not activate. If your controller is responsible for activating a pump, as a precaution you should remove the wires that are connected to the MV (Master Valve) and common terminals. This will prevent the possibility of the pump being accidentally activated which could cause damage from overheating. An alternative to using the rain mode is simply to shut off the power to the controller. If you do, you’ll need to reprogram the time and potentially all

your other settings as well, in the spring. Make sure to write down the stations, start times and run times so you can easily reprogram it.

3. Drain the pipes. Now you need to remove the water from the pipes and sprinklers so that it won’t freeze/expand and break the pipe. There are several ways to drain your pipes: a manual drain valve, an automatic drain valve or the compressed air blowout method. In order to use the manual method, the irrigation system must be properly designed. Make sure the manual drain valve is installed at the lowest point on your system’s mainline. You should install additional manual drain valves if your mainline has multiple low points where water may collect. A ball valve, gate valve, “stop and waste” valve or simple threaded pipe with a cap can provide drainage. It’s important to make sure piping is properly sloped to drain. If the valve is outdoors, it should be installed over a “dry well” (underground pit filled with gravel) to drain water away from the piping. If the valve is installed indoors, make sure you can drain a volume of water without flooding or overflow. To manually drain the valve, first turn off the sprinkler system mainline shutoff valve. Then open one of the sprinkler system control valves, either manually or electronically from the controller, to relieve pressure on the sprinkler system mainline. Slowly open the manual drain valve. Repeat this procedure for all manual drain valves on the sprinkler system mainline. However, since there could be potential safety risks we recommend contacting your local irrigation specialist. Many offer sprinkler winterization services this time of the year.

Why Stretching is Right for You By Sally LeDuc, PT

S

tretching is natural to all of us. Have you ever sat for a long period of time and noticed that you stretched upon rising almost unconsciously? Stretching feels good and to stretch after prolonged sitting, standing, or bending is a way to ‘sort of re-align’ your skeleton and lengthen any tightening that occurred.

Types of Stretching There are two basic types of stretching: 1) Static, or when you hold a stretch for 30 to 120 seconds and 2) Dynamic, or when you actively contract and then stretch a muscle group repeatedly 5 to 15 times. To effectively perform a dynamic (sometimes called ballistic) stretch it is best to use a Theraband or a large elastic band that can provide you with resistance as well as help you perform the stretch. Generally speaking, dynamic stretching should be reserved for those who have been stretching for quite some time, understand the sense of stretch, and who are free of injury.

Why Should You Stretch Regular stretching should be a part of any exercise program. Stretching in-

creases flexibility, improves joint range of motion, increases circulation, promotes better posture, helps prevent injury, and helps relieve stress while promoting relaxation.

When, Where, and How to Stretch You can stretch anytime anywhere. However, it is best to warm-up prior to stretching in order to prevent injury. Although stretching can aid in the prevention of injury, it is the warm-up itself that has been shown to reduce the risk of injury (3). If you have an injury (a muscle strain) or a chronic, painful condition, modify your hold time or the intensity of your stretch so you don’t aggravate the condition. Most people do well holding stretches for 30 seconds, however some people need to hold the stretch longer. The long-term effects of stretching on range of motion have shown that those who held their stretches for 30 seconds, rather than 15 seconds, had significantly greater gains. When you begin, stretch daily. After you have reached your intended goals, stretching every other day may be enough to maintain your flexibility.

December 2007

To get the most out of your stretching, stretch until you feel a slight pulling sensation without feeling pain. If stretching is painful, the muscle is being pulled too far (too much). While you hold the stretch, the pulling sensation will subside and you will feel the muscle relax and lengthen. Always hold the stretch long enough (30-120 seconds) so that you can feel this lengthening and maximize your benefits. Last, but certainly not least, remember to breathe while you are stretching - it will help greatly! Here’s to treating your muscles with care and improving your overall flexibility! References: 1. Things to Consider

great answer to reclaiming your quality of life is a good sleep system. By discovering the superior product that will alleviate interrupted sleep, you can concentrate on the moments that matter most. Better sleep restores and rejuvenates your body to create a higher quality of living. Investing minimal time to looking at latex options may prove to be the key to getting rid of the annoying aches and pains which come from a current mattress that pinches or cuts off circulation. Support and comfort are the two factors which latex mattress manufacturers set out to perfect. Also, it naturally comes from renewable resources and is eco-friendly. Its biodegradable ingredients come from water-based raw materials: natural latex, air and water. Taking care of yourself and the environment gives you peace of mind. There is useful information about latex products you will want to take with you when researching and selecting the product tailored to meeting your needs. First of all, latex comes from rubber trees. Latex is breathable, resilient, durable, and exceptionally comfortable. It reduces high-pressure areas, that in other products, cause you to toss and turn. It dynamically contours to your anatomy and keeps your spine properly supported throughout the night. If you are a back, side or stomach sleeper, a latex beds cradles your torso without creating unsupported gaps between your body and the mattress. Sleeping deeper and taking care of your back makes sense! Latex is uniquely healthy. It is hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, antimicrobial, and inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew. No artificial or synthetic materials have been added to provide these benefits. Allergy sufferers profit from the use of latex products. With relief of nasal and congestion issues, you wake refreshed and ready for a new day. Are latex allergies an issue in bedding products? Around the late 1990’s, latex allergies became a topic of concern. A small portion of the population reported an allergic reaction to the protein found in natural rubber latex. Most were from Health care workers who came into contact with surgical gloves and other latex medical products. Latex mattresses and pillows have never had a reported allergic complaint made to the FDA. Moreover, the latex used in mattresses is an open-cell foam, allowing for deep cleansing of the product. The latex is washed at least 5 times. If you decide to add the component of movement with the adjustable option, you can curtail many annoying medical conditions such as hiatal hernia, acid reflux, back pain, breathing problems, snoring, and circulation problems, by elevating the head or legs. One sleep system creates independent motion adjustments for each side of the bed. Differences of firmness can be selected for each side depending upon preferences. Sound sleep equals a better quality of life! As you discover which sleep system meets your satisfaction, don’t forget to take care of yourself and make your bedtime its best. Biofuels

Great Green Hope or Swindle?

By Stephen Leahy Organic Consumers Association shares their opinion:

A

raft of new studies reveal European and American multibillion dollar support for biofuels is unsustainable, environmentally destructive and much more about subsidising agri-business corporations than combating global warming. Not only do most forms of biofuel production do little to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, growing biofuel crops uses up precious water resources, increasing the size and extent of dead zones in the oceans, boosting use of toxic pesticides and deforestation in tropical countries, such studies say. And biofuel, powered by billions of dollars in government subsidies, will drive food prices 20-40 percent higher between now and 2020, predicts the Washington-based International Food Policy Research Institute. “Fuel made from food is a dumb idea to put it succinctly,” says Ronald Steenblik, research director at the International Institute for Sustainable Development’s Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI) in Geneva, Switzerland. Biofuel production in the U.S. and Europe is just another way of subsidising big agri-business corporations, Steenblik told IPS. ”It’s (biofuel) also a distraction from dealing with the real problem of reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” he asserts. Making fuel out of corn, soy, oilseeds and sugar crops is also incredibly expensive, Steenblik and his co-authors document

December 2007

18

in two new reports on the U.S. and the European Union that are part of a series titled ‘Biofuels at What Cost? Government Support for Ethanol and Biodiesel’. Their analysis shows that by 2006 government support for biofuels had reached 11 billion dollars a year for Organisation of Economic Development and Co-operation (OECD) countries. More than 90 percent of those subsidies came from the European Union and the U.S. These subsidies will likely climb to 13-15 billion dollars this year the report estimates. “More subsidies are coming as the biofuel industry expands,” says Steenblik. In fact, countries will have to spend more than 100 billion dollars a year to get biofuel production levels high enough to supply 25 or 30 percent of transport fuel demands. And those levels of annual subsidies will have to continue because the industry is dependent on them, he says. It might be worth it if biofuels resulted in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) but Steenblik calculates the amount of subsidies that goes into making enough ethanol to reduce emissions equivalent of a tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) is between 2,100 to 4,400 euros (2,980 to 6,240 dollars) depending on the support programmes. However, the European carbon trading markets sells a similar saved or sequestered ton of CO2 for less than 25 euros (35

www.HBMag.com

dollars) through various projects like planting trees or installing solar panels. Various analysis that take the full environmental costs of growing, shipping and processing maize into ethanol show there is only a small reduction in GHG emissions over burning fossil fuels. Newer research shows some biofuels could even be far worse. Rapeseed biodiesel and maize ethanol may produce up to 70 percent and 50 percent more GHG emissions respectively than fossil fuels, according to work published in September by Nobel prize-winning chemist Paul Crutzen and University of Edinburgh colleague Keith Smith. They found that growing biofuel crops releases around twice the amount of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) than previously thought. The N2O results from using nitrogen fertilizers. About 80 percent of Europe’s biodiesel comes from rapeseed and in America the vast majority is maize ethanol. “What we are saying is that growing biofuels is probably of no benefit and in fact is actually making the climate issue worse,” Smith has said in media reports. Last January, U.S. President George W. Bush set a biofuel target of 35 billion gallons per year by 2017, more than five times the current production of less than 7 billion gallons. However that target would leave some U.S. waterways polluted and some regions with severe water shortages, the National Research Council (NRC) said in a report released this month. The NRC is the research arm of the US National Academy of Sciences. The additional fertilizers used to grow all that maize (corn) will contribute to the overgrowth of aquatic plant life that produces “dead zones” like those in the Gulf of Mexico, Chesapeake Bay and elsewhere, the report said. Similar water warnings were issued by the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in Sri Lanka regarding India and China’s growing interest in biofuels. IWMI, part of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, recommends in its October report that the two countries invest in cellulosic biofuel the so-called second generation biofuel technology that is still a number of years from commercialization. “Subsidies for ethanol are more about securing votes from the powerful agricultural lobby than bringing environmental benefits,” says Walter Hook, executive director of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy, an environmental NGO based in New York City. Simple and cheap programs like a congestion charge – an extra fee for driving in city centers – and the widely successful Paris, France free bike program reduce air pollution and GHG emissions immediately at very low cost, Hook said in an interview.

Launched in July, Paris put thousands of low-cost rental bikes – the first 30 minutes of use are free – at hundreds of high-tech bicycle stations. A million trips were taken in just 17 days. “Absolutely amazing, every city should be thinking of doing this,” he said. In Paris, an advertising company provides the bikes for free, runs the system, gives all the revenue to the city and pays 4.3 million dollars a year in exchange for exclusive control of the city’s advertising billboards. Mobility – getting from A to B – with the minimum of GHG emissions is the core problem we should be addressing, not finding greener fuels, says Steenblik. Indeed, Canadian transportation analyst Todd Alexander Litman has demonstrated greener fuels and improvements in fuel efficiency result in people driving more because they can afford to. And that just makes “traffic congestion, accidents, road and parking facility costs, and the lack of options for nondrivers worse,” said Litman, director of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute, in British Columbia, Canada. In his ‘Win-Win Transportation Solutions’ report released in September, Litman documents a variety of cost-effective transportation strategies that could reduce motor vehicle travel by 30-50 percent, produce substantial reductions in GHGs and bring a range of economic developments. His simple solutions include making urban areas more walkable, creating bike lanes, improving the quality of mass transit and a dozen more ideas. None involved producing more biofuels. “Subsidising biofuels is just about the dumbest way to go,” Litman told IPS. Jean Ziegler, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, uses stronger language: increasing biofuel production is a “total disaster” for starving people, he told a Swiss media outlet last week. “There are serious risks of creating a battle between food and fuel that will leave the poor and hungry in developing countries at the mercy of rapidly rising prices for food, land and water,” Ziegler warned the UN General Assembly last August. On Oct. 25, he asked the UN General Assembly to adopt a five-year global ban on the conversion of land for the production of biofuels. Despite the growing evidence that biofuels are a huge mistake, governments will continue to pour billions more tax dollars into boosting production levels. “Governments rarely phase out subsidies,” laments Steenblik. “We’re hoping that countries will come to their senses in the next few years.”

Biofuel will drive food prices 20-40% higher between now and 2020

Ingredient Watch: By Lauren Birtwhistle

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

High-Fructose Corn Syrup: High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) was introduced in the late 1970’s. Since its introduction, it has found its way into thousands of sweet beverages and foods. So what exactly is high-fructose corn syrup? Well contrary to its name, it is not high in fructose. At the time when HFCS was first developed, the only sweetener in corn syrups was glucose; none contained fructose. So at the time, the name was fitting. But when compared to table sugar (sucrose), HFCS is not at all “high” in fructose. Its composition is nearly identical to table sugar (50 percent fructose and 50 percent glucose). HFCS is made up of either 42 percent or 55 percent fructose, the remaining sugars being primarily glucose and some higher sugars. It is used by manufacturers primarily because it is cheap and maintains the sweetness of natural sugar. HFCS is used in many soft cookies and snack bars because it maintains their soft texture by retaining moisture and resist crystallization after baking. Breads, cakes and breakfast cereals contain HFCS as well because it is a “reducing sugar” that gives flavor and “browning” to these baked goods. Many frozen foods contain HFCS to reduce freezer burn. It also lengthens shelf life, so you will find HFCS in many canned fruits. Is there anything threatening about this sweetener? Well, fructose is metabolized differently then natural sugar. It “appears to behave more like fat with respect to the hormones involved in body weight regulation,” explains Peter Havel, associate professor of nutrition at the University of California, Davis. “Fructose doesn’t stimulate insulin secretion. It doesn’t increase leptin production or suppress production of ghrelin. That suggests that consuming a lot of fructose, like consuming too much fat, could contribute to weight gain.” Studies are being conducted debating whether HFCS is a factor in the US’ obesity epidemic. It is not necessarily the HFCS that is causing obesity; it is the amount we are consuming. As of 2001, Americans consumed almost 63 pounds of HFCS per year. HFCS is hard to escape, but if taken in moderation and combined with physical activity; you can continue to live a healthy lifestyle.

Red Dye 40: Red 40 is a common food dye that is found in products like kool-aide, flavored sodas, chewing gum, candy and children’s vitamins. When Red 40 was first approved by the FDA, there were a few claims stating that it caused tumors and cancer. Later studies proved these claims to be false. However, it appears likely that Red 40 may have a negative effect on young children who consume it.

December 2007

20

Consumable products often include high amounts of sugar in addition to Red 40; thus it is difficult to determine whether a child’s behavior or other reactions are due to the sugar content or the food dye. Both may cause similar effects; but it has been shown that Red 40 has the capacity to such results when sugar is not present. Children who have been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) generally have significant improvements of their behavior and ability to concentrate when artificial additives such as red food dye is removed from their diet. Red 40 can also affect adults; it is a common trigger for migraines. It can also cause an upset stomach and make you feel uncomfortable and jittery.

Xylitol: Xylitol is a natural sweetener. It is used most commonly as a sugar substitute. It is a naturally occurring sweetener that is found in the fibers of various berries, corn husks, mushrooms and oats. It can also be extracted from corn fiber, birch, raspberries and plums. Xylitol has a sweetness factor close to that of sucrose. Most commonly xylitol is found in chewing gum. And because xylitol is a “tooth friendly” sugar, it does not encourage tooth decay and studies have shown that it may aide in repairing minor dental caries. Numerous other studies have shown that Xylitol may prevent ear infections and even improve bone density. Xylitol has no known toxicity and is a safe and healthy alternative to ordinary sweeteners and sugar substitutes. Shakespeare Animal Fund Helping Animals & the People Who Love Them “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” -Gandhi If you are elderly or disabled and live on a fixed income, there is often no extra money if your pet becomes seriously ill or is injured. That’s where an extraordinary foundation called the Shakespeare Animal Fund steps in to make sure suffering and seriously ill pets get veterinary care within 24 hours. The Shakespeare Animal Fund was founded three years ago by Jennifer Webb in memory of her beloved cocker spaniel, Shakespeare. She discovered people (often the elderly and disabled) will do without their own medicine or food, or even pawn their possessions, to try to get money for medical care for a suffering pet. That’s where the foundation becomes involved; they have a 24/7 hot line, and have distributed more than $60,000 to veterinarians in the area on behalf of low-income pet owners.

Shakespeare Animal Fund’s vision: • No pet should suffer because of the owner’s inability to pay for emergency care. • The quality of life of both the owner and pet will be improved and extended. • All pet owners will receive respectful assistance without having to choose between the well-being of themselves or their pets.

Examples of how the Shakespeare Animal Fund can alleviate pain and suffering and facilitate recovery – for animals and their loving companions: • Two dogs were hit in the mouth with porcupine quills. Their elderly owner had just enough money to put them down but not enough to treat their injuries and keep them alive, SAF paid for the emergency services. • A dog was injured and its leg dangled for three days while his owner desperately tried to get a vet to see him; SAF stepped in to cover costs. • A cat was in labor for 20 hours and was dying; her owner had no money to get the cat to a vet. SAF saved the cat and her kittens. • A dog was hit by a car and sustained a crushed pelvis. His owner didn’t take him to the vet because she didn’t have enough money for surgery and didn’t want him put down. SAF learned of the difficulty and took care of everything. To learn how you can help Shakespeare Animal Fund help others, please go to our website at www.shakespeareanimalfund.org. Your support will save lives and bring joy! Find ad on page 12. I Emotional

Freedom What a Gift! A Review of 3 Books By June Milligan, M.Ed., CHt

f you knew that you could easily and quickly relieve stress as well as dissipate the emotional charge on a negative personal issue, wouldn’t you do it? And if you could accomplish this just by tapping on specific acupressure points while simultaneously stating a phrase pertinent to that issue, wouldn’t that be amazing? Well you can! For example, if you suffer from a fear of spiders, you would tap on one particular point while stating the fact of that fear. After that, you would tap on a series of 14 points on your face and hands while stating that you “release” that fear or “eliminate” that fear. It sounds deceptively simple, but the combination of tapping on certain points while saying phrases pertinent to the issue, is very powerful. It can alleviate dozens of emotional blocks and even physical ailments. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is based on the ancient principles of acupuncture. It’s a simple tapping procedure that gently realigns the body’s subtle energy system, without the discomfort of needles. The act of tapping on just a few acupoints while concentrating on what’s bothering you, seems to address unresolved emotional issues as a cause of disease, psychological dysfunction or personal performance limitations. This is because negative emotional experiences disrupt certain accupoints on the energy meridians that run throughout our bodies. The physical effects of those disruptions, such as anxiety, allergies, fatigue, migraines and so forth are the result of the shock of that negative experience. Until we heal that disruption in the energy system, we cannot easily remove the unwanted physical symptoms. Medical doctors and psychologists have been teaching EFT to their patients since 1996, when knowledge of this innovation began to spread throughout California. The effectiveness of tapping on certain points was discovered by Dr. Roger Callahan, and popularized by Stanford graduate Gary Craig. His website, www.emofree. com is visited every day by thousands of people all over the world. There practitioners of EFT can share their experiences and stories regarding the alleviation of fears and phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sexual abuse trauma, addictions, insomnia, relationship issues, children’s behavior issues, and much more. A short video on the website features doctors explaining how EFT sometimes works when drugs do not work, and tells the story of a man with multiple sclerosis who cured himself through the

Where to get a

Massage

in Northern Nevada

S

o you want a massage. Where do you find a good massage practitioner? What are the choices in the Reno area, and what are the benefits of each? At a massage school you pay far less than at other places. Usually it’s about half the going professional rate. This can be good for your pocketbook and there are other benefits as well. You can find a student whose style you particularly like and train her to your specific needs. Then you can follow her as she becomes a professional. Going to a school for a massage also means that you most likely won’t have to wait long for your massage. In some schools you can walk in and get worked on right away. Maybe you’d like to try a massage center. The therapists in this setting are more experienced than students but many are just starting out and need a place to gain experience before they hang their own shingles. You can find someone you really like and request him every time or take the next available person if you are in a hurry. This is a great place for gift certificates; for a favorite teacher of one of your kids or a service professional whose work you liked or a close friend who needs a pick-me-up. Another great place to receive a massage is a hair/beauty salon. Many salons are putting massage in their locations because such modalities go together well. There is a lot to be said for getting your hair done and getting your massage in the

By Adrienne Hardt same place, sometimes on the same day. A problem with this type of location is that the smell of perm and nail solutions often travels into the massage rooms. Noise can also be a big factor. Some places are closing off the massage area from the hair salon to avoid this. Often when traveling, people go to hotel spas for their massages. These spas typically hire workers on salary and work them long hours. Often the therapists have to conserve their energy for long days so they don’t do the depth or breadth of work that you can find in private places. However, there are some therapists who love that kind of environment and will give you great body work. Also, if your therapist becomes ill there is generally someone to fill in and you don’t have to forego your session. You can ask other guests and the staff to find out who may be a preferred therapist. Casinos and hotels are more restrictive in their requirements for timing so you may only get a 50 minute massage instead of a full hour. Their prices are very inflated compared to private practitioners. However, the environment is typically lovely and caters to the customer so service is generally good. The main advantage to hotel spas is that you don’t have to go through the phone book and look for

December 2007

someone and wonder about who you’re getting. The practitioner is provided by the hotel and is qualified and available. As massage is accepted as a viable health care modality and as more people find relaxation and relief from pain and tension through massage, more massage therapists are becoming independent and finding their own clients. The best way to find a good private massage therapist is to ask friends and fellow workers for recommendations. As you collect these names and suggestions from people or from signage you can call and interview the practitioners to find out what they do that is special and how long they have been in business and how much they love what they do. As you look for a good therapist you will find that cost is not the most important thing. If there is a huge variance in cost, that bears looking into, but most people in an area are about the same price. You need someone for a specific problem; price becomes less of a factor in picking the right person. Gender also does not need to be a factor. Most people prefer women but there are excellent men in the field. And since most people do prefer women, becoming a successful male therapist is more challenging. When you find a man who is successful, he definitely warrants consideration.

Health and Wellness Spas are popping up all over the country as our attention moves to longevity and more natural health. We are taking care of ourselves without doctors and prescription drugs. Many spas of this kind are in our area and most offer massage as one of the several modalities. There is a big variance in cost of massage from spa to spa. Generally the therapists chosen for work in places like this have to apply and fulfill professional and skill requirements to be considered. Therefore you are more assured of getting quality work there than in other places. Last but not least is the option of having someone come to your home. There are many massage therapists who do “outcall massage. It usually costs quite a bit more due to extra time for travel and gas usage. However, the luxury of having someone come to your home to work out your kinks and stresses and leave you to your hot tub, bed or a relaxing evening is beyond words. Receiving a massage is a very personal thing. There is often a close connection between the therapist and the client because of the nature of the work. Human beings thrive on touch and on close connections. Receiving a massage can often disarm tension or anger and frustration from the day or week. Where it is done is also a personal matter. Each receiver has a different set of needs and qualities that will prescribe the type of location and surroundings for the best experience. If you don’t get what you were hoping for at one place, then by all means, try another. It is worth the search to find the right person and the right location. You can find most of the massage venues discussed in this article in the phone book yellow pages under Massage, Therapeutic. Some entries have ads, some displays do not. The ads may describe the type of work available but word of mouth and personal interviews with individual practitioners will provide you with the best information and the best results. #

101 SUPPLEMENTS

How To Know If Your Antioxidants Are Doing Their Job By Kurt Grange, Ph.D., ND

ORAC

stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. ORAC was developed to measure the antioxidant, free radical fighting ability in foods. The ORAC test measures polyphenols, which are present in brightly colored fruits and vegetables. The ORAC test was developed based on the intensity of the color in the food which is then related to its potential ability to quench a certain type of free radical. In short, ORAC is a lab assay that can measure, “in the test tube”, the POTENTIAL antioxidant activity of a food and give it a number. Even the USDA is getting on the ORAC band wagon. The USDA recommends we consume 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units daily. In truth, 80% of the population is consuming less than 1,000 ORAC units a day. Fruits and vegetables tend to have the highest ORAC values. Per 100 grams - Apples score a 218, Bananas 221, blueberries 2,400. The Acai berry has a 5,500 ORAC score. However, research shows that antioxidant foods which have a high ORAC values may NOT have high bioavailability or good bioabsorption. This makes the ORAC value a very doubtful measure of how beneficial the antioxidant is when actually used in the body. In other words, the potential is there, but the action is lacking. Furthermore, not all antioxidants have color for the ORAC test to measure. Some of the most effective antioxidants are white minerals such as ionic calcium, zinc, and selenium, or vitamins such as vitamin C and E. Free radicals scavenge the molecules that make up the tissues and cells of your body stealing their electrons. Essentially,

free radicals kill cells, damage DNA, cause chromosomal damage, create arterial plaque, accelerate aging and are the key factor present in almost every degenerative disease, including brain diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Different types of free radicals have different chemical structures. Accordingly, they need varied forms of antioxidants to neutralize them. Some of these antioxidants are water-based, some are oil-based, some scavenge the free radical directly, and some work indirectly on the free radical. Scientists agree that free radicals wrinkle your skin, damage internal organs and contribute to the signs and symptoms of early aging. The best way to resist free radical damage is to provide your body with antioxidants. There are three ways you normally receive antioxidants. Some you make as a natural product of metabolism and digestion. Some you eat, if you are eating organic whole foods, and some you take as supplements. Please remember that the essential function of an antioxidant is to supply electrons to electron-deficient free radicals so that they no longer steal electrons from the body’s cells. If you want to slow your aging process and/or help your body overcome disease causing, degenerative free radical damage you must choose the most effective antioxidants available. Using a food’s ORAC value is not the best method of choosing your source of antioxidants because it measures potential not actual use. ORP (Oxygen Reduction Potential) on the other hand not only measures potential (electron presence measured in millivolts) but the actual absorption and use rate of antioxidants in nutrients. Using the ORP test, the actual antioxidant capability is obtained by mea-

suring the release of hydroxyl (HO) and negative hydrogen (-H) from a nutrient. Antioxidants that have a low positive (+) or a negative (-) reading on the ORP scale are considered to be very powerful antioxidant free-radical fighters. *The larger the negative number, the higher the antioxidant value*. For example: • CoQ 10 has an ORP of +49 • Wheatgrass juice has an ORP of -120 • Sango coral calcium has an ORP of -273 Some companies sell antioxidants made from plant foods and claim that their product is superior because it has a high ORAC value. In addition, some companies add the ORAC values of the individual ingredients together (usually these are liquid products) and get astronomical numbers which are essentially meaningless. When one calculates the ORP value of these products they are often in the high positive (+) numbers. Therefore, not much true antioxidant is activity taking place. The best of both worlds to protect a person from the damaging effects of free radicals would be products that have a high ORAC value and a large negative ORP reading. References: 1. HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Effective Communication Skills Reduce Stress By Elizabeth Scott, M.S.

C

onflict in a relationship is virtually inevitable. In itself, conflict isn’t a problem; how it’s handled, however, can bring people together or tear them apart. Poor communication, disagreements and misunderstandings can be a source of anger and distance, or a springboard to a stronger relationship and happier future. Next time you’re dealing with conflict, keep these effective communication tips in mind and you can create a more positive outcome.

Here’s How:

1. Stay Focused: Sometimes it’s tempting to bring up past

seemingly related conflicts when dealing with current ones. Unfortunately, this often clouds the issue and makes finding mutual understanding and a solution to the current issue less likely, and makes the whole discussion more taxing and even confusing. Try not to bring up past hurts or other topics. Stay focused on the present, your feelings, understanding one another and finding a solution.

Don’t get defensive. Just hear them and reflect back what they’re saying so they know you’ve heard. Then you’ll understand them better and they’ll be more willing to listen to you.

3. Try To See Their Point of View: In a conflict, most of

us primarily want to feel heard and understood. We talk a lot about our point of view to get the other person to see things our way. Ironically, if we all do this all the time, there’s little focus on the other person’s point of view, and nobody feels understood. Try to see the other side, and then you can better explain yours. Others will more likely be willing to listen if they feel heard.

4. Respond to Criticism with Empathy: When someone comes at you with criticism, it’s easy to feel that they’re wrong, and get defensive. While criticism is hard to hear, and often exaggerated or colored by the other person’s emotions, it’s important to listen for the other person’s pain and respond with empathy for their feelings. Also, look for what’s true in what they’re saying; that can be valuable information for you.

2. Listen Carefully: People often think they’re listening, but 5. Own What’s Yours: Realize that personal responsibility are really thinking about what they’re going to say next when the other person stops talking. While it might be difficult, try really listening to what your partner is saying. Don’t interrupt.

December 2007

28

is a strength, not a weakness, and admit when you’re wrong. If you both share some responsibility in a conflict (which is usually the case), look for and admit to what’s yours. It diffuses www.HBMag.com

the situation, sets a good example, and shows maturity. It also often inspires the other person to respond in kind, leading you both closer to mutual understanding and a solution.

6. Use “I” Messages: Rather than saying things like, “You

really messed up here,” begin statements with “I”, and make them about yourself and your feelings, like, “I feel frustrated when this happens.” It’s less accusatory, sparks less defensiveness, and helps the other person understand your point of view rather than feeling attacked.

7. Look for Compromise: Instead of trying to ‘win’ the ar-

gument, look for solutions that meet everybody’s needs. Either through compromise, or a new solution that gives you both what you want most, this focus is much more effective than one person getting what they want at the other’s expense.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Holiday Season!

8. Take a Time-Out: Sometimes tempers get heated and

it’s just too difficult to continue a discussion without it becoming an argument or a fight. If you feel yourself or your partner starting to get too angry to be constructive, or showing some destructive communication patterns, it’s okay to take a break from the discussion until you both cool off. Sometimes good communication means knowing when to take a break.

9. Don’t Give Up: While taking a break from the discussion

is sometimes a good idea, always come back to it. If you both approach the situation with a constructive attitude, mutual respect, and a willingness to see the other’s point of view or at least find a solution, you can make progress toward the goal of a resolution to the conflict. Unless it’s time to give up on the relationship, don’t give up on communication.

10. Ask For Help If You Need It: If one or both of you

has trouble staying respectful during conflict, or if you’ve tried resolving conflict with your partner on your own and the situation just doesn’t seem to be improving, you might benefit from a few sessions with a therapist. Couples counseling or family therapy can provide help with altercations and teach skills to resolve future conflict. If your partner doesn’t want to go, you can still often benefit from going alone.

Healthy Beginnings Staff wants to thank all of our readers, our advertisers and our content contributors.

Tips: 1. Remember that the goal of effective communication skills

should be mutual understanding and finding a solution that pleases both parties, not ‘winning’ the argument or ‘being right’.

SCORE CARD

Nevada Legislative Roundup (From Progressive States Network)

D

espite partisan stalemate over a number of issues, the Nevada legislature made serious reforms in education, clean energy, and open government this session.

sion of the bill that would have required mandatory emissions reduction was removed.

In a major education bill, the legislature passed an increased budget that, among other things, increases per-pupil spending by 13% over two years, funds after-school programs, provides incentive pay for teachers in at-risk schools and hardto-fill subject areas, adds full-day kindergarten to 63 schools, and creates 29 “empowerment schools”, where principals and teachers have a greater say in how the school is run.

AB 178 creates a net metering system that allows customers generating renewable energy to pump surplus power into the power grid and draw on credits later, while also banning the sale of low-efficiency light bulbs by 2015.

The Nevada legislature also passed a raft of clean energy & environmental legislation: SB 422 enacted new rules that require the state to compile an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, although the provi-

• On criminal justice issues, the legislature expanded “good time” credits to encourage the release of more than 1200 inmates in the next two years. The legislature also changed the treatment of mentally ill people convicted of crimes by restoring a “guilty but mentally ill” plea abolished in a previous session and maintaining treatment for inmates released from state hospitals.

• The legislature restricted payday loans and banned balloon payments and extensions at the end of the loan term. The bill also banned collection action against families of military personnel who are deployed in combat.

TAKE ACTION NOW!

• While more comprehensive health care reform is needed, the legislature did pass a prescription drug card program, which lets all residents acquire the cards for free and secure a roughly 20% discount on drug prices.

AB 396 restricted the power of Homeowners’ Association from restricting members from installing solar panels or other insulation measures to promote energy efficiency.

• To promote more open government, the legislature expanded open meeting rules to apply to the state Tax Commission to bring greater scrutiny of large corporate tax breaks and require government bodies to make requested public records available within five business days.

Wildflower Musings

Furnish Your Life With Art By Pat Campbell-Cozzi

T

his month we have rearranged the Open Door Gallery at Wildflower Village. As I assembled the collage of artwork that makes our gallery so unique, I reflect on the fact that since starting the galleries, I have not been inside a mall. When traveling, I visit other galleries and especially those that reflect a similar vision as that of Wildflower Village and the Arts Co-op. I bring back items which I think our artists and clients will appreciate: A trivet made from pottery with fused glass; a new necklace with strands of amber beads and silver clay forms that encircle the strands; a new Raku piece that James Miles our ceramicist may enjoy. The Village is a growing venture, bits and pieces of art here and there that reflect our local talent and the inspiration they bring us all: a rich world, both healing and vibrantly alive. Everything in our gallery reflects a functional form of art. Textiles, jewelry, sculpture, pottery, art glass, scarves, kinetic metal art, purses... all can be used daily. We are uplifted by their beauty and long-living usefulness. Imported and manufactured goods found in a mall reflect the short-term, instant gratification which our society is finally rejecting. Visiting a locally owned restaurant means that your dollars are spent circulating within the local community. The administrative and publicity costs are far less and the goods purchased are therefore a better value. In the spirit of the holidays, I encourage you to do the same. When purchasing a gift, think of the beauty of the item, its function and ability to continue giving joy to the receiver for many years to come. Feel the connection to the artist, whose vision is realized in the gift you have chosen to give. This is the first of my Musing from the Wildflower, Reno’s extraordinary art village. Visit us and experience its healing and magical quality this holiday season. You can email me at patcampbellassoc@sbcglobal.net. I would welcome your ideas for future Wildflower Musings. facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin to promote clear, wellhydrated skin. It is the second most popular spa service, massage taking first place. The steps of a facial usually include cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation, extractions of blackheads, whiteheads and clogged pores, shoulder, arm and facial massage, as well as a hand treatment. The facial massage will help to tone and stimulate your skin and facial muscles, and is a lovely way to settle in to the entire process. A mask is selected and applied for your skin type; after removal of the mask, a toner is then used to refresh and balance the skin pH; a facial moisturizer and lip balm is also part of most facials. Facial techniques may vary from salon to salon, as may prices. Costs will typically run $75 and up, depending on the Day Spa, Resort or Hotel where you have it, and depending whether

or not you include any additional treatments. Estheticians sometimes run seasonal or off-season specials, so don’t be afraid to ask. Ideally, one should get a facial every four to six weeks or at least four times a year, as the seasons change, to maintain a clean, glowing and refreshed skin. And remember – facials are not just for women – men get them as well!

organs, and keeps skin looking fresh and young. Dull, grayish skin is a clear sign of dehydration. • Avoid tobacco and alcohol. Smoking and drinking are a very bad combination for your skin. Smoking introduces free radicals into your body that increase wrinkles by about 83%. And alcohol robs our bodies of essential vitamin, and causes dehydration effects to the skin. • Don’t Stress. Stress has the ability to make skin look dull and tired. Relax! If you are not familiar with skin care terms, here are some helpful definitions: • Body Polish: The use of salt, sugar, ground nuts, pumice or other granular substances in an emollient base to exfoliate skin. Polishes and rejuvenates the skin at the same time. • Exfoliation: Improving circulation while removing dead skin cells. The pressure used in the process can contribute to relaxation. • Extraction: The process of removing sebum, bacteria, dead cells, and other waste from the skin follicle. • Herbal Wrap: The body is enveloped in warm linen sheets that have been soaked in a special blend of herbs. The herbs induce perspiration to draw toxins from the skin. Relaxation is promoted by the deep heating action. • Hydrotherapy: A variety of treatments that take place in or with water, including underwater massage, herbal bathes, balneotherapy (fresh or mineral), thalasotherapy (sea water), Kneipp therapy, Vichy treatments, Scotch hoses, Swiss showers, and bubbles or jets.

acopi monniera, commonly known as water hyssop, is a creeping herb with small white flowers and succulent leaves. It grows mostly in marshy areas of Florida, as well as in Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan, and India, where it has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and other traditional medical systems. It is easily propagated through cuttings, and will grow in water that is slightly brackish. In Ayurvedic medicine the plant has been used for centuries in a dried form, called Brahmi, as an astringent, diuretic, laxative, and a tonic for the heart and nerves. It is also used to improve memory and intelligence, and to treat various illnesses: cough, dermatosis, dyspepsia, fever. It is also a remedy for serious conditions such as anemia, anorexia, arthritis (using a paste of the leaves externally), diabetes, dropsy (edema), and even insanity. Other traditional Indian medical systems use the herb to treat anxiety, asthma, and epilepsy. In western medicine, Bacopa monniera is being researched primarily for its cognitive effects – for memory, learning, and concentration, in particular. Research already supports its effectiveness against anxiety, epilepsy, bronchitis and asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastric ulcers. It also has antioxidant properties that may protect against free radical damage. Bacopa alkaloids, saponins (glycosoids in steroids), and sterols are considered responsible for its therapeutic properties. Many of these were isolated in Indian studies done over 40 years ago, and others have since been identified. Research shows that the Bacopa’s triterpenoid saponins and their bacosides enhance nerve function, which contributes to cognitive function. Bacosides also demonstrate antioxidant activity in the hippocampus, where loss of neuronal activity is observable in patient’s with Alzheimer’s disease. In animal studies, Bacopa is shown to scavenge reactive oxygen species in the brain (hence the anti-oxidant activity), and has a relaxant effect on pulmonary arteries, aorta, trachea, and ileal and bronchial tissue. There is also anti-inflammatory function, through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and lysosomal membrane stabilization. Fewer seizures have been noted in epileptic patients administered defatted ethanolic extract of Bacopa monniera over 2 to 5 months. Clinical studies on cognitive function indicate that administration of Bacopa must be chronic to achieve consistent benefits. December 2007

Children 10-13 showed IQ score improvement in a 9-month treatment, and in one study of 6 to 8 year olds, given 350 mg of dried herb three times daily for 3 months, a general improvement of intellectual function was noted. In an Australian controlled trial on adults, there was a significant improvement at the end of twelve weeks in verbal learning, memory consolidation, and speed of information processing. Some studies have been inconclusive. A study that combined Brahmi (Bacopa’s dried, Ayurvedic form) with Gingko Biloba showed no effect on cognitive function; however, a significant effect was evident when Brahmi was administered in a test for retention of new information. Bacopa seems to be very effective in relieving anxiety. In 1980, 35 adults suffering from anxiety were given 12 g of dried Bacopa daily, for four weeks. The herb not only relieved their anxiety significantly, but improved mental function and improved sleep quality and appetite. All in all, Bacopa is very promising as an herbal remedy for relief of a variety of serious diseases and conditions, as well as for its effects on cognitive function. As always, talk with your doctor/health care provider before using Bacopa. References: 1. www.vitaminherbuniversity.com 2. HEALTH DENTAL

Treating

TM J Disorder

with Acupuncture By Joyce Marley

TMJ

refers to the temporo-mandibular joint. TMJ disorder is a common condition that is, in essence, a displacement of the articular disc in the jaw. TMJ refers to a condition related to the joint connecting the jaw (mandible) to the skull. Several symptoms may be experienced, including myofascial pain, inability to comfortably open the mouth, locking of the jaw, clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint, headaches, and ear pain or ringing in the ears. Pain may even radiate into the neck and shoulders.

TMJ may result from injury, overstretching the jaw during dental or surgical procedures, repetitive movements (gum chewing), or clenching and grinding the teeth (bruxism). There seems to be a connection between TMJ and some autoimmune diseases. More than 50% of those diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis also suffer from TMJ. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that up to 25 million people may experience some or all of these symptoms. Though both men and women are affected, women seem to be more at risk. Western medical treatment includes the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, oral splints and in 5-10% of patients – surgical correction. In 1997, the NIH organized a panel of pain specialists who concluded that “acupuncture may be a useful adjunct treatment or acceptable alternative” to treat TMJ. Today, TMJ is quite commonly and successfully treated by acupuncture. The basic premise behind the theory of acupuncture is that energy flows thru the body on very specific pathways called meridians. When these pathways become blocked, pain and disease result. Inserting very fine needles into points on the pathways facilitates the smooth flow of energy and pain is relieved. There are twenty documented meridians in the body. Four of the meridians flow directly thru the jaw joint.

:ed½j B[j FW_d Ibem Oek :emd$ We focus on sports injury management & performance.

Some acupuncturists choose to put needles locally in the area of the pain – around the ear and in points along the jaw. And it is perfectly acceptable to do so. But the meridian system is very complex and there are many inter-connecting pathways and relationships between the meridians that make local needles unnecessary.

Some of the most powerful points to treat TMJ are located near the big toe, elbows and knees. Often within minutes of inserting these distal needles, the patient is able to notice the difference in the jaw – less pain and greater range of motion. If grinding of the teeth is an issue, acupuncturists may add an experience point on the lower leg that treats bruxism. After the needles are removed, relief will vary between patients. If the TMJ has been chronic, several treatments will most likely be necessary. Often, acupuncturists apply small pin-like seeds to the surface of the ear over points that have been shown to correspond to the jaw. By applying pressure to the seeds between treatments, the patient can extend the benefits of the acupuncture treatment by doing this self acupressure treatment. Chinese medicine categorizes pain and disease in terms of the energy in the body being out of balance. This out of balance is either diagnosed as being excess or deficient, or a combination. An acupuncturist will gather information about the progression of the disease (condition), inquire as to what factors aggravate or alleviate the symptoms, analyze all bodily functions, examine the tongue and take the pulses (there are 6). A pattern of disharmony between the meridians and their associated organs in the body becomes apparent. In addition to inserting needles into points to address the jaw symptoms, additional needles may be placed to treat the underlying cause of the problem. Because of this very individualized approach, acupuncturists may see ten people with TMJ and treat them all slightly differently, based on their Chinese medical diagnosis. In some cases, an herbal formula may be recommended. Reference: http://www.acupuncture-services.com/

They might as well say, “It was only a truck that hit me.” In addition, if stress goes on too long, brain chemistry imbalances take place. People experience lower levels of both stimulating and calming neurotransmitters, as well as those related to pain relief.

What You Can Do Fortunately, we now understand how to managing stress. The basics are simple.

1. Breathe: What could be simpler? Unfortunately, most people don’t know how to breathe well, or if they do, they don’t remember to practice. Correct breathing triggers a relaxation response in the entire body, freeing you from many of the negative effects of stress. Stress-relieving examples - yoga, qigong, meditation.

Filtering The Debate:

Tap or Bot tled? By Matt Vandevert

O

pponents of bottled water garnered lots of media attention this year in their effort to reduce plastic waste. Perhaps the most notable critics were the mayors of Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and Chicago who demanded boycotts, bans, and taxes on bottled water. As a result many of us are now taking a second look at tap water. Though less glamorous than buying a bottle of Evian, drinking from the sink eliminates both plastic waste and the need for fuelburning diesel trucks that travel back and forth between springs, bottling plants and stores. If you drank tap water this year, you did well by the planet and probably saved a few dollars. If you are still buying bottled water, it may be because you realize that there’s more to the debate: besides the sometimes bad taste of city water, just Google “chlorinated water” and you’ll find plenty of other reasons to keep buying bottled water. At the top of that list is the fact that many experts believe the disinfectants that kill microorganisms in our water supply contribute greatly to our risk of cancer and heart disease. In fact, our primary exposure to these toxins occurs not through drinking tap water but through inhalation and absorption in showers and hot tubs. As people realize that drinking bottled water barely helps reduce the risks of chlorine exposure, they often consider buying a whole-house filter

to purify their water at its point of entry into their homes so that all their taps offer pure water. But treating tap water requires wading through a lot of propaganda. A phone call to the local water filter company doesn’t always help. In fact, it often ends in the sale of something entirely unrelated to the removal of toxins: a water softener. What many people don’t realize is that the sole purpose of a softener is to remove calcium and magnesium, two of water’s healthiest ingredients. Softeners exchange these beneficial minerals for salt (making a lowsodium diet difficult). After capturing the healthy minerals, a softener flushes them into your home’s drain through a process called backwashing. Besides wasting gallons of precious water, backwash draws salt into the drain and thereby contributes to the death of plant life and to the inability of sewage treatment plants to meet federal standards. Many of us have naively stripped our water of minerals and thrown water away all for the sake of silky water or because the water salesman said we needed a softener. Nevertheless, many good reasons to address hard water exist: hardness cakes a water heater with scale. This buildup will cause the water heater to waste energy as it must heat through an increasing thick layer of insulating deposits. A water heater that works harder overheats and wears out faster. Similarly, hard water shortens the life of dishwashers and washing machines. Hardness may also require up to twice as much soap and detergent to match the cleaning power of treated water, which reacts wonderfully with small amounts of mild, earth-friendly cleaners. Thus, failure to treat hardness often results in energy waste, in premature replacement of appliances, and in the need for large amounts of harsh cleaners. Technologies do exist to improve taste, reduce toxins and address hardness without wasting water, using salt or losing mineral

December 2007

content. But make sure to shop around and find a quality product. Buying low-cost, throw-away units is unfortunately a waste of plastic and demands more fuel as you drive to and from the store for a replacement. Also be aware of reverse osmosis. This popular method of filtration sends water through a membrane so fine that not much can get through it. The healthy minerals get filtered out—even water itself has a hard time passing through. Water that doesn’t make it through literally goes down the drain: you’ll waste one to 5 gallons for every gallon you drink. If you are on a well and need special equipment, look at the material safety data sheet for the recommended filtration media. Some families get stuck using a water treatment more toxic than the source water that they want to improve. Your purchase should: • Reduce toxins in the water • Address water hardness • Waste no water through backwash • Include no salts or chemicals • Be made of quality components • Have a warranty As you take steps to improve your water, consider the Three Rs of conservation: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” They appear in order of importance. First, reduce what you use—less bottles, less fuel, less chemicals and soaps, and fewer appliances over the course of your life—then focus on reusing and recycling the few things that you decided to buy. Properly done, water purification helps you conserve all these items while simultaneously improving your health and quality of life. Few purchases accomplish as many things at once. Making Sense of

MRSA

By Meg Lewis

(The Antibiotic-resistant Superbug)

N

ewspapers, radio and television have been leading with reports about MRSA, sometimes referred to as a SuperBug. What is it? Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) (usually pronounced in short as “Mursa” or spelled out), is a bacterium responsible for some difficult-to-treat infections in humans. The organism is often sub-categorized as community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) or hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA) depending upon where the disease was acquired. What is alarming is that MRSA infections are becoming increasingly more common in healthy people who have not been in the hospital. According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, more than 94,000 cases of MRSA occur each year and of those cases, 18,000 people die – almost 20%!

Sometimes the bacteria remain confined to the skin. But they can also burrow deep into the body, causing potentially lifethreatening infections in bones, joints, surgical wounds, the bloodstream, heart valves and lungs.

Signs and Symptoms:

Preventing Staph & MRSA Infections:

Staph infections, including MRSA, generally start as small red bumps that resemble pimples, boils or spider bites. These can quickly turn into deep, painful abscesses that require surgical draining.

As with most things, prevention is key to avoid these infections. Understanding that ‘staph’ and MRSA is usually spread from having close contact with infected people can help you avoid these infections. In addition to direct physical contact, it may also be spread by ‘indirect contact by touching objects (i.e., towels, sheets, wound dressings, clothes, workout areas, sports equipment) contaminated by the infected skin of a person with MRSA or staph bacteria.’

Leading Causes of Antibiotic Resistance: * Unnecessary antibiotic use—for decades, antibiotics have been prescribed for colds, flu, and other viral infections that do not require or respond to antibiotics, and to which immunities develop. * Antibiotics in food—antibiotics are routinely given to cattle, pigs, and chickens, and eaten by humans. Same problem as above. * Bacterial mutation—bacteria that survive treatment with one antibiotic may develop resistance to the effects of that drug and to similar medicines.

Who is Most at Risk to Develop CA-MRSA? According to the Mayo Clinic, “These are the main risk factors for communityacquired (CA) MRSA: • Young age. CA-MRSA can be particularly dangerous in children. Often entering the body through a cut or scrape, MRSA can quickly cause a wide spread infection. Children may be susceptible because their immune systems aren’t fully developed or they don’t yet have anti-

bodies to common germs. Children and young adults are also much more likely to develop dangerous forms of pneumonia than older people are. • Participating in contact sports. CAMRSA has crept into both amateur and professional sports teams. The bacteria spread easily through cuts and abrasions and skin-to-skin contact. • Sharing towels or athletic equipment. Although few outbreaks have been reported in public gyms, CA-MRSA has spread among athletes sharing razors, towels, uniforms or equipment. • Having a weakened immune system. People with weakened immune systems, including those living with HIV/AIDS, are more likely to have severe CA-MRSA infections. • Living in crowded or unsanitary conditions. Outbreaks of CA-MRSA have occurred in schools, military training camps and in American and European prisons. • Association with health care workers. People who are in close contact with health care workers are at increased risk of serious staph infections.”

The CDC’s Five C’s: These factors, referred to as the 5 C’s, are as follows: Crowding; frequent skinto-skin Contact; Compromised skin (i.e., cuts or abrasions); Contaminated items and surfaces; and lack of Cleanliness. The 5 C’s are common in schools, dormitories, military barracks, households, correctional facilities, and daycare centers.

MRSA in Schools and Day Care: In general it is not necessary to close schools or daycare centers to “disinfect” them when MRSA infections occur. MRSA skin infections are transmitted primarily by skin-to-skin contact and contact with surfaces that have come into contact with someone else’s infection.

Biking across Australia, South to North -- Part 5

Wrap Yourself in Bamboo

Sadly, most wallabies and kangaroos I came upon were road-kills. I saw literally hundreds of them. On fresh ones, and there were several every morning, eagles or crows were feeding. With so many carcasses the eagles have taken on a vulture-like functions. There seemed to be no services to pick up the dead animals. They are literally “for the birds”. From Pimba to Coober Peddy, a distance of 332 km, I managed in two days. En route I camped at a rest area called “Bon Bon Station” so named after one of those ranches deep in the bush. The size of individual ranch land is probably more comparable to counties back home. Only once was I able to see any ranch structures from the highway. When I checked into the “Opal Motel” shortly after dark, 3 motorcyclists had already moved into the room next to mine. In the morning one of these burly fellows yelled across a section of lawn to me: “You need an engine!” I retorted: Yeah, yeah you cheaters!” While I consider true bike riders as brothers and sisters, as fellow two-wheelers, I classify motorcyclists as “cousins,” distant cousins. “I know you can race through Australia at 130 km/h, but did you see any kangaroos?” What a silly response: “Yes, we saw them in the zoo in Sidney. Along the highway we saw only dead ones. They almost got us in trouble because of the eagles feeding on them. They gorge themselves so much that they are very slow to take off when we approach at high speed. We came very close to having accidents.” An opportune moment had arrived for me to comment: “Maybe you would be safer without a motor.” There was a long silence… I observed an interesting interplay between eagles and crows. Probably because of their power and superior vision, eagles have become emblems for countries like the US and Germany. However, what I witnessed was how crows outsmarted eagles. While the eagles soar high looking for a fresh road-kill, crows, often in pairs, fly along the highway looking for food thus increasing their chances of a find in a major way. When the eagles notice that the crows have been successful they swoop in and take possession of the meal. The crows stay close by and when vehicles cause the eagles to fly off, they take over again until the eagles return. In the air the more agile crows have an advantage to harass the eagles. They conduct swift attacks from above the eagles cannot respond to. Even so, who wants to have a crow as their national bird? Peace, joy and health, -Hans!

Minerals All diseases are due to mineral deficiencies.

V

itamins and minerals are as essential to life as water, and are required for good health. Minerals are naturally occurring elements found in the earth, needed by every living cell on the planet for proper function and structure. From the time we are babies, we are given vitamins and told that they are necessary to good health. Somehow minerals and how vital they are is overlooked. You don’t hear about them from the family doctor. The fact that this data is not easily available is doing a tremendous disservice to all of us. Lets look at why you need minerals for optimum health. Our bodies are designed to be healthy. The body primarily consists of water and minerals, both of which are essential to life. A proper balance of minerals is required for appropriate function. Minerals are necessary for every biochemical process and activity of the body. They are responsible for maintaining the (pH) balance of the body, proper cellular metabolism, nerve conduction, muscle function, organ function, hormonal secretion of glands, digestive competence. They are also needed to ensure the proper composition of body fluids, formation of blood and bone, maintenance, nerve function, and the regulation of muscle tone – including that of the heart. deficiency of any one mineral can throw the body out of its delicate balance. When the body goes out of balance, pain and disease can set in. Minerals work as building blocks for our bones, muscles, teeth, nerves, connective tissue and body fluids. Minerals act with and are essential to optimum enzyme and vitamin function. These working relationships are required by the body to function effectively. Each vitamin needs a specific mineral to make it work. Vitamins can’t be utilized if minerals are not present. Therefore, if you’re taking vitamin supplementation without the proper mineral balance in your body, it is useless. Minerals help the body to maintain its proper chemical balance. The level of each mineral within the body has an effect on every other, so if one is out of balance, all mineral levels are affected. If not corrected, it can lead to a chain reaction of imbalances, which in turn can lead to illness. Once they have entered the body, minerals compete with one another for absorption. This means, for example, that too much zinc can deplete the body of copper, and too much calcium can affect magnesium absorption. So, it is important that minerals are taken in balanced amounts. If this balance is not maintained, the body has to compensate. It robs minerals from the bones, joints, muscles, gallbladder and mucousal lining of the digestive track. For example: If there is not enough calcium in the blood stream, the body robs calcium from bones and teeth. Other ways the body compensates are: to rob calcium and minerals from joints, rob minerals from the lining of the intestinal track and often rob natural sodium from the lining of the esophagus. Most of us know that osteoporosis is linked to a deficiency in calcium, but most are not aware that diabetes and hypoglycemia are connected to chromium, and vanadium and that cancer and heart disease are connected to selenium and

December 2007

42

copper deficiencies. Anxiety and depression are linked to selenium, magnesium and many other deficiencies. Muscle pain and spasms are connected to not enough magnesium. As with vitamins, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to obtain the amounts of minerals needed for optimum health through diet alone. This means supplementation. Knowing how the body needs minerals and will do anything and everything possible to have the proper minerals to utilize for optimum health can be life changing information. The next step is finding the correct minerals to feed your body. Randomly trying various minerals would not be a good idea. The correct minerals in the correct amounts is vital and very unlikely to find by random trial and error. Look to find a supplement that contains the proper mineral combinations in the correct amounts. This means reading the ingredient portion of the labels and not just the bold statements on the front of the label. Studies have shown that around 10 to 20% of the pills and capsules are absorbed and used by the body. Liquids have up to 98% absorption rate. They go directly into the bloodstream and into the cells. This will give the best results in the least amount of time. Take the time to check out how you and your family can benefit from proper mineral supplementation. You may find yourself happier and healthier than you have felt in years. References: 1. Joel D. Wallach, M.S.D.V.M. (University of Missouri) and N.D. Getting to the Core of the Core It’s More Than Just Your Abs! By Kirk Sachtler, PT, DPT, OCS, CMPT, CSCS

C

ore Training is one of the latest buzzwords in a haze of spin designed to engage the public interest (and pocketbooks) in the world of fitness and alternative medicine. There are devices and offerings galore on TV and the Internet advertised to shape, beautify, and strengthen your core. Devices such as: the “Ab-Lounge, Ab Roller, Ab-Rocker, Abdominizer”, and programs such as P90x, 6 minute Abs, Pilates, and more abound. If you haven’t noticed (how could you not?), all of the models demonstrating these programs and products are beautiful, lean, and have chiseled abdominal muscles. The implication being that if you buy this program or that device, you will look like them! Now don’t get me wrong, I am all for abdominal training, I just wish to clarify some important misconceptions about “Core Training”. Core Training is actually more about functional training than muscle training. In other words, it is more about the stability and control of the Abdomino-Pelvic and Lumbo-Pelvic regions during life activities, than it is about a 6-pack! Let’s take a look at some information available to personal trainers. The NESTA (National Exercise and Sports Training Association) website offers these comments for personal trainers: “What muscles are involved in the core?” “The deep trunk muscles, Transversus Abdominis (TA), multifidus (MF), Internal Oblique (IO), paraspinal, pelvic floor, are key to the active support of the lumbar spine. The cocontraction of these muscles produce forces via the “thoracolumbar fascia” (TLF) and the “intra-abdominal pressure” (IAP) mechanism which stabilize the lumbar spine, and the paraspinal and MF muscles act directly to resist the forces acting on the lumbar spine.” Unfortunately, they are leaving out many important muscles that are part of the core. In fact, nearly All the hip and thigh muscles are part of the core, and thus need to be part of one’s program. “As a fitness professional, why is this important?” “Before you develop any type of fitness program, your client must have a strong core foundation to eliminate or reduce any chance of injury. A strong core is essential for power transfer from the lower to upper body and upper to lower body during all physical activities. A weak core, and lack of understanding of how core function affects movement and December 2007

43

sports performance, will lead to diminished results and a greater likelihood of injury.” Unfortunately, there is no research to back up the comments regarding injury, but it Is true that a lack of understanding of core function affects movement performance.

What Really Is The Core? The “Core” of the human body is actually the center of mass, roughly 1-2 inches below the belly button. It is the midpoint of weight distribution between the upper and lower sections of the body. Functionally, it is defined as the area between the pelvis and ribcage, on all sides. It includes the pelvis, ribs, spine, the femurs (thigh bones) and all the muscle units that attach to them. So, aside from the back and abdominal muscles, we also include the muscles of the hip and thigh. Muscles like the Adductor group, the Gluteals, the Hamstrings, the Iliopsoas, the Rectus Femoris, the Quadratus Lumborum, the Latissimus Dorsi.

Making Sense of

MRSA

OB/GY N

Continued from page 40. When MRSA skin infections occur, cleaning and disinfection should be performed on surfaces that are likely to contact uncovered or poorly covered infections. To avoid ‘staph’ (MRSA), the CDC recommends that you and your kids practice good hygiene, including:

1) Keeping your hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water. Athletes should be encouraged to shower and wash with soap after all practices and competitions. 2) Keeping cuts and abrasions clean and covered with a proper dressing (e.g., bandage) until healed. 3) Avoiding contact with other people’s wounds or material contaminated from wounds, including towels, soap, razors, clothing and sports equipment.

Treatment:

Both hospital and community associated strains of MRSA still respond to certain medications. In hospitals and care

facilities, doctors generally rely on the antibiotic vancomycin to treat resistant germs. CA-MRSA may be treated with vancomycin or other antibiotics that have proved effective against particular strains. Although vancomycin saves lives, it may grow resistant as well; some hospitals are already seeing outbreaks of vancomycin-resistant MRSA. To help reduce that threat, doctors may drain an abscess caused by MRSA rather than treat the infection with drugs.

Success Tips For Heart Based Entrepreneurs

By Jenn August

Q: What’s the best way to talk to a potential client?

A:

Listen first, ask them questions about themselves. They will give you the information you need to know if your services are right for them. Then ask them this question “If I knew something that would help you, would you be open to hearing about it”. Then share with them how you can be of service.

Q: What do potential clients want

to know first when I am telling them about my business?

A: How it will benefit them. It’s com-

mon to tell potential clients what you do first, for example “I am an orthope-

dic massage therapist”. They might not know what that is. It’s more effective to tell them what problem you solve first and what method you use second. For example “I help people relieve chronic pain with orthopedic massage.”

Q: How do I get more referrals? A: The most effective way to get

more referrals is to ask the clients that already love your work to tell their friends and family about you. You can inspire them into action by offering them a discount on the next time they use your services. For more info, call Jenn August, C.H. 775-219-4901 Find ad on page 23.

Bioidentical Hormones Hype or Healthy?

By M. Kelly Shanahan, MD, FACOG

O

ver the past few years, “bioidentical” has been the buzzword of hormone replacement therapy; a Google search for “bioidentical hormones” yields 88,700 hits! But are bioidentical hormones a panacea, or it is all hype? Like most things, the truth lies somewhere in between. What is a bioidentical hormone anyway? Many people use the term interchangeably with “natural”, implying that it is better than synthetic. All “bioidentical” means is that the hormone is chemically and molecularly the same as that produced in the body. All bioidentical hormones today are made in a laboratory – synthesized – from plant sources, usually soy. A common misconception about bioidentical hormones is that they are safer than synthetic hormones. While it is true that some animal studies have shown that certain bioidentical

estrogens, specifically estriol, may decrease the risk of breast cancer, there are no large, well controlled studies of the same in humans. Because the FDA will not allow bioidentical hormones to be patented (since they are chemically and molecularly the same as the hormones our bodies produce), there are very few studies done; drug companies do studies in hopes of recouping the investment in future sales of a hot new drug that they patented. Until the government or academia fund a large trial, bioidentical hormones cannot be considered safer than synthetic. That said, there are advantages to bioidentical hormones. Because they are chemically the same as what our bodies produce, side effects are often milder. Bioidentical progesterone (e.g., Prometrium™), for example, does not produce the moodiness often associated with synthetic progestins like medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera™). Compounded bioidentical hormones can be made in any dose and any combination, allowing you and your doctor to customize the prescription to fit you and your unique needs. Compounded medications, however, are not regulated by the FDA and it is imperative to use a reputable compounding pharmacy to ensure safety. Another common misconception is that bioidentical hormones are only available from compounding pharmacies. In fact, most of the estrogens widely prescribed today and made by big drug companies are bioidentical. Estrace™, Climara™, Menostar™, Vivelle™, Estrasorb™, Estrogel™ to name a few. Prometrium™ is, however, the only FDA approved bioidentical progesterone. There are two main advantages to using FDA approved medications: 1) quality control and 2) insurance coverage. The bottom line about hormones – bioidentical or not – is that the decision to use hormone therapy is one that should be made after careful consideration of both risks and benefits. You and your doctor need to discuss the specific symptoms you are experiencing and review your unique personal and family medical history to decide what is best for you. Reference: 1. Hidden Hazards of

Winter

Dehydration

M

any people who are vigilant about drinking enough water during the summer months tend to be less vigilant during the winter. Whether you are an athlete or an armchair quarterback, your need to attend to hydration after the temperature falls. It is every bit as important as it is during the summer. Winter dehydration can be an insidious contributor to health problems associated with cold weather. Children and the elderly are at the greatest at risk. The human body loses water in many ways during the winter. For example, although it may not seem as pronounced, exercising in cold weather still causes the body to lose substantial amounts of water through sweating. Cold, winter air cannot hold as much moisture as warm air, therefore drier air draws more moisture from the lungs as we breathe. In addition, interior environments are usually very dry in the winter due to drying heating methods. The decreased interior humidity also increases water loss from the lungs and skin. When the body becomes chilled, blood is drawn away from the periphery limbs (i.e. arms, legs, skin) toward the interior organs to preserve vital body heat for these life-sus-

taining tissues. The directing of blood to the interior increases its flow to the kidneys, automatically increasing the kidney filtration rate and urine output. This effect is called cold diuresis. Cold weather increases the (bodies) metabolism and (the) associated water needs required to maintain healthy body temperature. The colder it gets outside, the harder your body has to work to maintain its 98.6 degree Fahrenheit temperature. This extra energy requires that you drink even more water than usual. Drinking 64 ounces (8 cups) of water a day will actually help you stay warm. Beware of alcohol intake too. Alcoholic beverages increase risk of dehydration because the body requires additional water to metabolize alcohol. Signs of dehydration include increased thirst, dry mouth, and sticky or reduced saliva. Monitor the color of your urine. If it is dark yellow or brown, you are dehydrated.

December 2007

48

Your skin tends to get dry in the winter, extra hand cream, lip balm and lotion won’t do the trick in fighting cold weather flakiness. According to Dr. Susan M. Kleiner, your best bet is to hydrate from within by drinking extra water every day. Respiratory illnesses associated with winter, such as the common cold and influenza, cause the body to generate large amounts of mucous in an effort to rid itself of the offending microbes. The water in these discharges must be replaced. Intestinal influenza, leading to diarrhea and vomiting, requires additional water and, perhaps, electrolyte replacement. We recommend four to eight additional cups of water daily. Clients are then wrapped in a sheet and blanket to rest and relax. Parafango has the ability to retain warmth for approximately twenty minutes at a consistent temperature, which allows the body to experience deep heat and relaxation. This treatment may be followed by a back and shoulder pressure point massage. • Vichy Treatment: Needle-like showers of alternating cold and hot water are directed from overhead as the client reclines on a table. It is usually followed by a body scrub. European Vichy treatments consist of a fine shower of lukewarm water over the body, along with a full-body massage done by the therapist in wet room attire. In the United States, the Vichy shower is mostly to rinse off body scrub or wrap products and not generally used therapeutically. References: 1. The Mystery of

Pheromones! By John Morgenthaler

Pheromones Produce Positive Mood Changes Whether you’re the president of a large corporation or a busy soccer mom, we all perform better when we feel confident, relaxed and attractive. On the other hand, when we’re irritable and tense, nothing seems to go right. Feelings and moods are complex. They’re influenced by weather, what we eat, how we sleep, and pheromones. And pheromones, in turn, influence our personal and professional interactions and help define who we are. Humans use pheromones—odorless, chemical messages that we continuously emit through our skin—to communicate, protect our children, and recognize and connect with each other on what feels like an “intuitive” level. Pheromones may even explain why we feel comfortable with some people and have virtually nothing to say to other people; why we’re attracted to some people and repulsed by others. And, on a very basic level, pheromones—or lack of them—may even determine how we feel about ourselves; whether we’re friendly and optimistic or detached and pessimistic, whether we’re self confident or shy; and whether we’re easy-going or uptight.

What Are Pheromones? Originally, scientists believed that pheromones (from the Greek, meaning “I carry excitement”) were chemical signals that function only in insects and animals. In the past several decades, however, scientists discovered that pheromones are a basic component of human interaction. We now know that pheromones play an important role in determining our moods and motivations, deepest feelings and fears, as well as dreams and desires. Pheromones influence how we feel by sending signals to the hypothalamus. Often called the “brain’s brain,” the hypothalamus is the seat of emotional expression and regulates everything from fear to aggression to sex drive. In addition to controlling hormonal functions, the body’s water and salt balances, blood pressure, sugar and fat metabolism, the hypothalamus helps us react to people and situations. In fact, according to the authors of Love Scents: How your natural pheromones influence your relationships, your moods, and who you love, “Without a properly functioning hypothalamus, humans would be emotionally bankrupt.”

December 2007

50

The Mystery Of Our Secret Organ Scientists are discovering that the hypothalamus plays a critical role in receiving pheromones through the vomeronasal organ (VNO) in the nose, and then triggering an emotion or response. Until recently, the VNO was assumed to be an important organ in animals, but a vestigial organ—leftover from primitive times and no longer needed or functional—in humans. But in 1994, Dr. David Berliner and his colleagues at the University of Utah discovered that humans do indeed have a VNO, which, as in animals, detects pheromones and sends messages to the hypothalamus. The human VNO, a tiny pit located on the septum between the nostrils, ranges in size from 0.1 to 2 millimeters. The opening isn’t always visible to the naked eye, but you might be able to see it by aiming a flashlight toward the front of the nasal cavity. That small, fleshy pit is the opening of the VNO. If you examined the VNO with a microscope, you’d find that the opening leads to a tube lined with columnar cells called pseudostratified columnar epithelium. Interestingly, these cells are not found anywhere else in the body! On the other hand, odors and scents are detected by olfactory epithelium cells within the nasal cavity.

Pheromones are picked up by the VNO, then transmitted to the hypothalamus, reaching the brain in fractions of a second. The pheromonal message then elicits an emotion or response, without our thinking about it. When synthesized human pheromones are applied to your skin, the chain of events is the same, but very predictable, producing significant, positive mood changes—both in you and the people you interact with.

Feel More Relaxed And Alert Louis Monti-Bloch, PhD, a scientist at the University of Utah whose studies into how humans perceive pheromones have received international acclaim, has said that when he started working with synthesized human pheromones “I began to notice changes in myself. I felt different. I was working very late at night—it was past midnight. So, I went home and got up very early the next morning and I felt great! Later, when I was back in the lab, I found I could produce feelings of alertness in myself (in the presence of the pheromones).” “Then I exposed myself to the pheromones intentionally. I felt very nice. I had decreased respirations and was in a state of calm. My muscles also relaxed,” said Monti-Bloch.

The Secret To A Happier Life? It’s common to joke about that dreaded birthday when you finally find yourself “over the hill.” Unfortunately, the body’s metabolism starts to slow down as early as our mid-thirties. Our DNA and cells suffer continuous free radical damage, our hormone production slows down, and our pheromone levels also gradually decline. Think of it this way: our body is like a factory, producing dozens of chemicals that make us who we are, how we feel, and how we influence the nature of our relationships. A decrease in estrogen and testosterone levels has a profound effect on women and men. Likewise, a decrease in pheromone production can leave you feeling detached, irritable, unattractive, and lacking in self-confidence. Adding injury to insult, just because of the nature of our western society, we wash and scrub our clothes and bodies, use perfumes, powders and deodorants—all of us tend to overpower or eliminate our pheromones! It’s no wonder so many of us feel unattractive and moody so much of the time!

for the women were more dramatic. Shari, the twin wearing the witch hazel, was approached by 11 different men over the course of the evening. But Stasea, wearing the human pheromone, was chatted up by 30 different men, nearly three times as many as her identical twin sister. Shari noted that “People didn’t even want to talk to me, and my sister got all the attention. It was incredible, truly.” Stasea’s reaction to the pheromone was that “They didn’t just talk, they were ENTHRALLED with me!” Concluding the report, ABC News Medical Correspondent, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, asked “about the situation in the bar,” to which reporter Bill Ritter said, “The results astonished us. We can’t deny what we saw happen in the bar.”

Conclusion: The Natural Chemistry Behind Our “Sixth Sense” Many factors influence our attractiveness to others. Physical attractiveness, age, health, fitness, social status and character are but a few components known to affect one’s perceived attractiveness by a potential mate. Only recently have researchers been able to uncover the unseen natural chemistry that controls our mating strategies; unconscious odors and undetectable odors that comprise the human “sixth sense.” It’s clear that human pheromones, when applied to the body, directly energize the limbic system of the wearer to boost confidence, stimulate the libido, enhance romantic possibilities and contribute to an increased sense of well-being. Real Life—the Twins Test To test the effectiveness of pheromones in real life, ABC News conducted an impressive, if somewhat unscientific test in March of 1998. Two sets of identical twins—two sisters and two brothers—were taken to a popular New York bar. Human pheromone was applied to one of the twins in each pair, while the other got plain witch hazel. Neither twin knew what they received. The only rules for the test were that they were to trade places throughout the evening, and they couldn’t make the first move toward contacting other bar patrons. The results for the men came out about even—a handful of women approached each of them. This isn’t unusual, as fewer women will approach a strange man in a bar. But the results December 2007

MEDITATION & REFLECTION

The Holidays...

a Great Time to Meditate By Laura Peppard

What are you searching for when you in your head might not be you but what others want of you? To meditate is to find yourself again in the midst of the chaos consider meditating?

Meditation is about having a relationship with yourself. Through meditation you can begin to know who you are. Meditating is about creating a space to experience yourself, to find your answers, to realize why you act and react the way you do. To achieve a meditative state, it is first necessary to reconcile your inner truth with what the rest of the world wants from you. This process is a good thing because it is how we learn and grow. On one hand your vision is very personal, born deep within your unique connection to the Supreme Being. On the other hand, to bring your vision into reality you must connect and negotiate with others; individually, in family groups and in larger social and cultural contexts. Each contact with others requires you to re-evaluate your vision, your goal in the context of others’ needs, agendas, abilities and viewpoints. Ever try to meditate and find you had a million things going on in your head? Did it ever occur to you that some of the voices and images going on

of others’ needs, wants and opinions. Where are you? You is where it feels good. Bring your attention to the center of your head. Notice all the voices and images. How does it make you feel? Like you need to do more, try harder, fulfill everyone elses’ needs? As you notice (become aware of) but do not become (lose yourself, take it too seriously), those voices begin to release. This is called neutrality. In neutrality you can find You. You are what feels good, just the way it is. You are the light in the center of your head. You are the creative force desiring to express yourself. You are perfect just the way you are. As soon as you experience that, you change; you become your truth in present time. When you create from this space, things are right, you are happy and a blessing to those around you. The winter holidays are the time of the year that we connect most with our families and friends, past and present. New possibilities emerge to heal and renew our connections with those loved and important to us. During the holidays many memories and dynamics from the past rise to the surface. We may find ourselves experiencing intense feelings and needs. What a valuable time to meditate and discover what you really want to create for yourself in this holiday season! Energy Exercise: Bring your attention to the center of your head (near the pineal gland). Find your neutrality to whatever you find there. Then begin to notice You, that point of light in the center of your head. Be there and allow your attention that you may have left in other places to come back to you (is that light a little brighter?). Nothing you have to do or solve; just be there. Then consider what you would like to do, feel and create for this holiday time. Don’t be afraid to try different experiences on, see how they feel. Like clothes at a store, what is comfortable? What feels good? When that picture you see looks like just what you want, release it to the universe. Go on your way and remember to notice when you are in the middle of that creation and enjoy! HEALTHY ADVENTURE

Snowshoeing in

By Lauren Birtwhistle

I

t’s about time to put away the mountain bikes and kayaks and start thinking about winter adventures. As the temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, many people have discovered a new kind of adventure. Snowshoeing.

If you are looking for something a little more intimate, check out the Old Mt. Rose Highway trail to the Christmas Tree trail. The 2.5 hour hike ends at the Christmas Tree restaurant, where you can reward your hard work with an amazing meal.

Snowshoeing is a great option for exercise during the winter. Not only is it an excellent workout, but it gives you time to take in some beautiful scenery and truly enjoy your surroundings. Snowshoeing is much easier on your feet then running or walking and using snowshoes cuts back on trail erosion.

One of the best rated trails in the Reno/Tahoe area is the Galena Creek trail. This trail gives adventurers two options; you can take the high road, or the low road. The lower path stays along Galena Creek and is about half as long as the upper route. It still offers amazing views, but is much easier to navigate. The upper route cuts away into Forest Service land and requires some more work. The trail travels along a deep forested canyon and culminates at an open canyon with fabulous views at its upper end. This route is about twice as long as the lower hike, but the breath-taking views are worth it if you are in shape. It eventually connects with the lower route.

Snowshoeing makes every trail different and new. There are hundreds of different trails located in the Lake Tahoe area. Tahoe Meadows is just one example of a great snowshoeing trail. It is a popular winter playground for residents of the Reno/Tahoe area, as well as visitors. The trail is very busy on weekends, but crowds diminish during the week. At Tahoe Meadows, you can hike up an unnamed peak to brilliant vistas of Lake Tahoe and the Mt. Rose area.

is the perfect way for the whole family to enjoy what this our backyard has to offer. And you will get some great exercise at the same time! For more info, google Reno/Tahoe Snowshoeing and dip into any number of resources, or contact local ski areas for specific trail information.

Getting to the Core of the Core It’s More Than Just Your Abs! Continued from page 43. What Does It Do? Ah, here lies the rub and why it is so important. The significance of the core is that it must enable the body to maintain the posture that facilitates the most efficient bi-pedal locomotion. Boy, what a mouthful! That means that when one is walking your hips don’t flop up and down like a runway model or forward and back like when riding a horse. Why is this significant? Because when the pelvis flops around as described, the lumbar spine (lower back) moves excessively. The lower back and pelvis are not supposed to, they are designed to be a platform for the upper and lower parts of the body.

So How To Train “The Core”? It’s really not that difficult and it won’t cost you three easy payments. In fact, you can use any program or equipment you already have if you add a bit of knowledge to it. The key is to eliminate any movement of the pelvis while doing any leg lift or sit-up/crunch/trunk exercise. This, of course, demands that you concentrate on the quality of the movement and stop when you can no longer maintain the right form. What is the right form? It is something we Therapists refer to as Neutral Spine. This is Not a flat back, it is the natural curve of the lower back, what we call lordosis. Understand that when the pelvis is rocking, so is the lumbar spine and this is incorrect. Whatever exercise you are doing, you must keep the pelvis still and a small curve in the lower back. If you are lying down, a small rolled up towel under the back works great.

A Simple Technique Actually, we want those chiseled abs to be of benefit, don’t you? The best way to benefit from stronger abdominal muscles is to practice to engaging them during real-life activities. How to do this? It’s very simple. Engage the abdominal muscles by pulling the belly button inward. Oops, no lifting the shoulders or sucking in your breath please! If you do this correctly, straight back, your waistband should loosen. Try maintaining this position for 5 seconds and then work up to 20 seconds. Try also to do this while walking, running, or lifting things. And yes, you do need to breathe, but that’s a subject for another article! References: 1. NESTA website 2. Another critical area to address is the range of motion of the hip joints. If you have stiff hips you will be unable to adequately control the Lumbo-Pelvic motion during exercise. One must have flexibility in all directions of hip motion. So, can you sit cross-legged without slouching? Can you perform a “Lunge Maneuver” without the pelvis twisting? If not, you have work to do.

HEALTHY PETS

Impor tant Winter Paw Care By Sandy Moyer

W

inter can be especially hard on a dog’s paws. Unprotected from ice, snow, and slush, and bitter cold, their paws need special care. By taking a little extra time to keep your dogs’ paws wellgroomed, you can minimize problems with cracked, sore pads, blisters and infections.

all traces of salt and other deicers so a dog can’t lick it off later. Never let a dog try to chew away any lumps of ice and snow sticking to its paws or hanging from its fur.

The products used to clear the ice and snow that accompany cold winter weather can be a real hazard for dogs. Rock salt and most chemical de-icers can irritate a dog’s paws and turn a winter walk into a painful ordeal. Stay away from heavily salted areas as much as possible when walking your dog.

Ingesting rock salt or chemical deicing products can have a toxic effect. There are pet-safe ice melting products available. Use them instead of rock salt for de-icing side walks and driveways. The National Animal Poison Control Center also suggests using sand or cat litter as an alternative. They won’t melt ice, but they’ll provide added traction.

Inspect paws after walking in areas treated with salt and other de-icers. Check between toes and examine the foot pads for cracks in the skin. Look closely at any inflamed areas for splinters, embedded gravel, etc. Snow, especially wet snow, clings to long haired dogs as they run and play in the snow. When snow or slush from melting ice and snow on sidewalks sticks to the hair beneath a dog’s paws, lumps of ice, often mixed with rock salt and gravel, build up between their foot pads and toes. Walking hurts. Always wash paws with warm water after outdoor play and winter walks. Even if there’s no trace of cracks, irritation or any damage and no snow and ice to remove, it’s important to wash away

After washing, apply Vaseline or Bag Balm to foot pads to soothe irritated paws. Apply again just before walks or outdoor play time to protect paws. Snow and ice collecting under paws will be less of a problem for long-haired dogs if the hair on their paws is properly trimmed. Cut long hair growing from between the pads or each foot. Using a sharp grooming scissors, cut hair so that it’s even with the pads. If there are any mats between the pads, very carefully cut the mat out, leaving as much of the hair below the mat as possible. Cut hair from between the toes even with the surface of the foot. Next... trim hair from around the edge of the foot. On dogs with long

feathering on the back of their front legs, trim any excessively long hair so it does not drag on the ground. It’s important to keep a dog’s nails trimmed all year long, but absolutely crucial in winter. Untrimmed nails can lead to splayed feet, sore nailbeds, and torn nails. When nails are extra long, the toes spread apart, leaving more space for snow and ice to build up.

Warmth and Protection for Paws Doggy boots are not just a novelty for pampered pets. Even paws covered in heavy fur get cold when they get wet. Exposure to ice, snow and salt can hurt even the toughest paws. Well-made boots can keep a dog’s paws warm and dry in rain, ice, and snow and protect them from the harmful effects of salt and de-icers.
