Healthy Beginnings is also trying something new in 2013: three new departments! Make sure to look into “Nurture.” This department features a 12 month series on pregnancy and parenting. If you are longing for tips or ideas on stress relief, meditation or exercise, check out the “FLEX” department.
n iconic white dove takes flight--spreading its delicate wings, promising a peaceful voyage. This symbolic bird has long represented sentiments of love and tranquility, in all walks of life. Its past is tied to religion, politics and war.
Our “L-i-n-k” department features stories and reviews on people, events and things that have a deeper connection to our lives. In fact, I noticed another connection since writing the intro article to L-i-n-k. One of our feature articles was written by a staff member from the business school my older brother is currently attending to obtain his MBA. The link factor: I did not know this until after it was edited and placed.
For Christians, the dove signifies peace and the Holy Spirit. Doves are often pictured carrying an olive branch, which also denotes serenity. In the political setting, the image of a dove embodies freedom from strife. People who are considered a pacifist might also be called a “dove.” Oddly enough, doves (pigeons) were also used in war, and were actually quite helpful. Some of those war pigeons received medals, honoring them for their services.
As we begin to chart a new path, we hope you join us on our journey. With that, and on behalf of HB Magazine staff, we wish you a Happy and Peaceful New Year!
On the dawn of a New Year, Healthy Beginnings Magazine feels the dove represents hope for a peaceful and prosperous future.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

Stress, Adrenal Glands and Sexual Responsiveness Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
T
The adrenal gland is composed of two main parts: the cortex and the medulla. The cortex is the outside part, and produces many steroid hormones that regulate our blood sugar and fluid balance. This is also where women make their DHEA and testosterone.
here is a lot more to sexual hormones than estrogen and testosterone. Diminished libido can often be traced to the effects that stress has on our often overlooked adrenal glands: job stress, spouse stress, toxin stress, and lack of sleep all affect our love life. Lifestyle changes and nutritional support can restore our desire to heights many have thought they could no longer attain.
Although it is a relatively small amount of testosterone compared to men, it is still a very significant factor in the female libido. When the adrenal cortex is stressed out in women, it may reduce their sexual desire.
When we think of sex hormones, we generally think about the ovaries, where women make estrogens and progesterone, and the testes, where men make testosterone. But the adrenal glands, which sit on top of each kidney, can play a substantial role in our sexuality.

Geography
of the Soul Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD
E
when we are a bit lost in our life. And at other times, getting lost helps us to find our true self. The logical mind traces paths across a map, but your spiritual life forms a path across the landscape of your soul.
very soul has its own geography, the place it’s meant to be, where it feels most at home, most alive, most connected to God. Laura wasn’t raised in Nevada, but once she got here she knew it was her home. She loves the desert, the sagebrush and cedars, the mountains and wide-open spaces. She likes to visit small towns and explore the trails and scenery around them. She values the quiet and solitude. The land speaks to her; the mountains call her name. In a mystical state of consciousness, she sometimes feels like she is hiking across the peaks and valleys of her own soul.
Andy Drymalski, EdD, is a licensed psychologist and Jungian psychologist in Reno and Carson City. For more information call (775) 786-3818 or visit www.renocarsonpsychologist.com.
Different landscapes speak to each of us differently. Some people “find themselves” in Yosemite, others in Zion, some by the ocean, others by the desert, some in the forest, etc. Have you ever felt like you were living by the lake of your soul, or the river of your destiny? Have you skied down mountains of wonder and joy? How did you end up where you are now? Did you come here in search of work or in a job transfer? Or did the geography and spirit of the land somehow draw you to it from across the miles and time? Do the people you spend time with share a similar geography of the soul? Are you part of a tribe without realizing it? We give conscious, logical reasons for how we came to be where we are, but what if a deeper, unconscious force within the land called us forth? Sometimes we get lost in our travels

ALTERNATIVETHERAPIES
Curing Parkinson’s Disease Written by Frank Shallenberger
N
o one needs to tell you that a Parkinson’s diagnosis is serious. So, any news at all about treating this disease is good news indeed. Now, there is some great news. It has to do with something safe and simple: the amino acid l-dopa. Parkinson’s disease is caused by a lack of the brain chemical dopamine. l-dopa is what dopamine is made from. Neurologists have long known that if you can just give a Parkinson’s patient enough l-dopa, the symptoms will disappear. But that’s the problem. In most cases, long before you can get to the high doses needed to reverse the symptoms, they cause serious side effects. But what if there was a way to give really high doses of l-dopa without any side effects at all? That’s the good news. There is now a way to do just that; and using this method, it is possible to essentially cure Parkinson’s. Rod is a 68 year old man who has suffered from Parkinson’s for eight years. Despite all of the best neurological care and medications he was completely disabled. He could not walk without a walker. He could not even take care of the basic necessities of life. Amazingly, after Rod was on the new Parkinson’s protocol for only eight weeks, he was completely free of symptoms. Since then, he has resumed a normal life, even to the point of elk hunting. If you saw him you would have no idea there was anything wrong with him at all. Dr. Hinz made the remarkable discovery that the side effects doctors see with high doses of l-dopa are not caused by l-dopa itself. They are caused by an imbalance in the other brain chemicals. It happens because when you increase the amount of one brain chemical you also affect the levels of the others.
Visit www.HBmag.com
For example, consider the brain chemicals epinephrine, norepinephrine and serotonin. All of these brain chemicals are synthesized by the same enzymes that the body uses to convert l-dopa into dopamine. They are also all transported across cell membranes by the same transporters. And lastly, they are all eliminated by the same enzymes. This means that if you do something to increase the level of one of them, it affects the balance of the others. Here is the important and revolutionary aspect of Dr. Hinz’s work: he has discovered a system that is able to keep the levels of all of the other brain chemicals in balance even when very high levels of l-dopa are used. This allows a complete resolution of symptoms. For example, the highest levels of l-dopa that a doctor can use (due to side effects) are around 6-800 mg per day. However, one patient had to receive 13,000 mg before his symptoms disappeared. If his other brain chemicals were not kept in balance, he could never have taken so much l-dopa. That’s the miracle of Dr. Hinz’s discovery. By properly supplying the amino acids for serotonin, epinephrine, and nor-epinephrine at the same time that increasing doses of l-dopa are given, we now have a way to give the high levels of l-dopa that are needed to cure Parkinson’s. But everyone is different. And that means that each person with Parkinson’s has a different balance of brain chemicals. Therefore, there is not just one mixture of amino acids that will work for everybody. There has to be a way to find the exact mixture that will work for each individual. Dr. Hinz has also discovered how to do that. He discovered a highly sophisticated way to analyze the balance of brain chemicals in the laboratory. He gives patients a special mix of l-dopa and other amino acids during their first visit. Then,

one week later, a lab test determines how the original mix needs to be altered. This procedure is continued until the exact formula of aminos is discovered for each individual patient.

CHRONIC DEHYDRATION
A
Part 6: It Causes Disease Written By JeanAnn Fitzgerald
chronically dehydrated human body can be compared to an above ground swimming pool filled with water. As the family gets caught up in life, pool maintenance is assigned to the family’s young child who sometimes forgets to add water. Each day the hot sun evaporates some water from the pool. The child puts the hose in the pool, but since he’s not tall enough to see inside, he never lets the water run long enough to fill it The sun evaporates more water. As the summer passes, the water level drops to 60 percent of capacity. Then the October leaves fall into the water, they rot, and bacteria begins to grow. When a family member checks, the pool is found to be only 50 percent full and putrid.
.
Our bodies can be like that pool. We get so busy living our lives that we forget about our bodies. We get so enamored with the tasty beverages available that we give up filling our water needs. We can’t see into our bodies to gauge the water level, so we don’t realize how low the water becomes. That’s how chronic dehydration occurs—over time, when we aren’t paying attention. What does get our attention is when this long-term water shortage causes debilitating disease. This is when we turn to our doctors for a pill or an operation to fix things. Medicine can give us a temporary fix to regulate heartbeat, dissolve a blood clot, filter the blood or add insulin, but it can’t cure the problem. The heart may become more erratic, other clots may form, the kidneys will continue to decline in function, and the pancreas will not produce insulin. The following information is not the result of “scientific studies,” because there is no money to be gained by telling people to drink water. We put too much stock in human logic anyway. The great scientist Albert Einstein said, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

Some health specialists eschew the scientific “evidence” proving the rational cause of disease. Some ignore the “logical” conclusion and intuit a better solution for the degenerating diseases they observe. Some have ignored the symptoms of these diseases and focused on the cause as being chronic dehydration, which is due to long-term deficiencies of water, salt, potassium, calcium and magnesium. On average, 75 percent of our body is ideally comprised of water. Not only is there water in every cell of the body, but also in the space between the cells. We can go weeks without food; it takes only six to ten days without water for us to die. Before that demise, lack of water causes cells to die, beginning with the least vital ones and progressing to the most necessary organs. If water weren’t as important to life as we know it, the National Aeronautic and Space Administration wouldn’t be looking for it on other planets. Water = life. Lack of sufficient water = cell death and disease. This is why Dr. F. Batmanghelidj believes that chronic dehydration can cause as many diseases as medicine has invented names for. In ABC of Asthma, Allergies and Lupus, Dr. Batmanghelidj publishes a letter from Andrew Bauman recounting his health struggles, which represent a great number of those serious diseases. Andrew began his trip down the chronic dehydration road as a child. He seldom drank water and suffered from severe allergies and asthma. He also experienced “aborted polio” episodes after an initial polio vaccination, and again after a polio booster. As he grew to adulthood, Andrew still drank little water, preferring

four or more cups per day of coffee, tea, alcohol (all dehydrating liquids) and sodas. As he grew in years, so did the list of afflictions diagnosed by his doctors: Juvenile diabetes with vein blockage with possible removal of both legs Retinal bleeding in the eyes and vision loss Enlarged prostate and potency loss Deteriorated kidneys Mononucleosis on two occasions Over stressed immune system Many bacterial infections A second spleen was grown Arthritis, bursitis Fibromyalgia Acid reflux, bowel problems Thyroid nodule Heavy metal poisoning Sleep apnea and narcolepsy Cutaneous B cell lymphoma over entire body surface
At age 39, Andrew learned of Dr. Batmanghelidj’s water cure. He seriously increased his water intake and three months later, doctors pronounced him free of skin cancer. By age 40, he was ingesting salt liberally and drinking 1 ½ gallons of water per day. It was then that Andrew wrote his health problems had disappeared, including the thyroid nodule and second spleen. His daily insulin intake was down from 95 units per day to 35-45, and new pulses had developed in his degenerated legs.
Chronic dehydration can cause many more complications than Andrew endured and some will be explored in the coming issues. If you have had success curing or relieving disease through rehydration, please contact JeanAnn at 775-828-7194. References:

lifestyle. There are many ways to put together a plan. Check online for planning and calendar templates specifically for exercise. You can also look to your smart phone for help; there are apps for it. Of course, the old-school paper calendar method is still legit. The main thing to keep in mind: all of the cool and trendy ways to keep track of things and stay organized only work if you actually follow through with the plan itself. So, if sticking with a plan is difficult, try rewarding yourself— buy yourself a new water bottle, gym bag or running shoes after you have consistently followed the plan for a month. Set weekly and monthly goals for yourself, like increasing your speed or distance, or adding more days or time to your weekly meditation schedule.
First things first, you should always start with a plan. For instance, how does one incorporate new exercises into an existing workout plan? Or, how does one add more “to-do” when their time is limited? The answer: prioritize. This is the key ingredient to any successful plan. If we could get all of our monthly shopping completed in just one day, we would, right? Considering that’s not possible, we plan. We organize our shopping over the month to incorporate what needs to be purchased, what is on sale at particular times and when the purchasing should actually take place—all of which revolves around our daily and weekly schedules.
Try this basic activity to help weed out the fluff: • Write down all of your current physical activities (including walking the dog, shoveling, hiking, etc.) • Write down all of the physical activities you would like to try (or do more often) • Write down all of your current stress relieving activities (yoga, meditation, running, etc.)
The same is true for your workout. It is just not possible to squeeze in every aspect of your exercise routine into one day. In fact, it’s not really the best for your body either. For example, if you lifted weights with your arms, legs, back and core on one day and then did the same routine the very next day, you would not be giving your body enough time to rest. Even if you do not incorporate weight lifting into your life, it is still essential to create balance within your exercise.
• Write down all of the stress relieving activities you would like to try (or do more often) • Now, look at your “already doing” and “would like to try” lists and compare them • Write down all of the free time or time slots you have available throughout your week
Planning a workout schedule can be tricky, but if you set it as a priority (like doing your laundry on a certain day or eating a specific diet) it will become a natural part of your routine—a

• Choose at least four activities from each list (16 total) • Choose four time slots you can set aside for these activities

• Pick one activity from each list and complete each activity within first week of the month • Then, pick another four and do each activity within the second week of the month, and so on, until you have completed all 16 within one month • Listen to your body during each activity and make sure to take notes throughout the month This activity is not based on a scientific weight loss, fitness or training program, however it will help you determine which activities offer more bang for their buck, according to how you feel after completing them. Once you find what you like, you are more prone to sticking with a schedule that entices you. You can also work with a personal trainer, fitness instructor or physician to fine tune a program that suits your needs—based on activities you know that you like. For the long-time planners of the workout world, you most likely have a solid schedule intact. If that is the case for you, try adding a few mornings of meditation to your routine, or maybe a yoga class here and there. Do something new to shake things up a bit. Your body and mind will thank you for it. As for the soul, well, laughter offers a cheerful lift. Find the humor in life; it’s all around you. Even at the gym… My workout partner and I reserve our chats for our “card” time (our nickname for cardio). She was recently telling me about this new method for reducing wrinkles. As some of you know, when you chat during a workout, words can be choppy, breathy and possibly even left out. At any rate, I was very curious to give this new method a try. A day or two later, we were in the midst of our card session as I relayed my experience to her. Yep, we may as well have played telephone with 50 other card goers. I had completely misheard her story. After I told her I was in my bathroom where I looked into the mirror, placed my hands in a perfect angle above my head and then delicately slapped my face several times over, she burst out laughing. The method she mentioned was not “slapping” away the wrinkles, it was using acupuncture. Hmm, I failed on that one. Although, the slaps did puff away the fine lines for a while.
*This department comes from the mind of Ffjorren Zolfaghar, HB Mag’s Editor & Content Director—a workout enthusiast. She began a regular routine of long distance running and core conditioning when she was 13 years old. Since then, she has tested the vast waters of workout models including marathon running, weight training, yoga, Pilates, Tae Bo, kickboxing, boxing, Zumba, spin, P90X, hiking, walking, prenatal yoga, water classes, core conditioning classes, sandbox workouts and the list goes on. She is excited to dig a little deeper and offer support in this very important area of our lives: keeping our bodies FLEXed and ready for life!

Pregnancy Written By Allison Prater
may find it difficult to eat or to keep food down. This usually lasts through the 14th week of pregnancy. The nausea is a caused by increased levels of estrogen and progesterone, equivalent to taking 100 birth control pills a day! These hormone fluctuations cause the digestive system to slow down and become softer. This may cause some constipation as well. Gentle exercise, such as a walk, yoga, or some other form of low impact fitness is a great way to get some relief. This helps reduce the levels of acid and carbon dioxide that build up in the blood; it can also help to combat fatigue and constipation. Eating small frequent meals is advisable, as having an empty stomach can make things worse. Eating some crackers or toast upon waking can help to absorb stomach acid and keep foods down. Emphasize complex carbohydrates and complete proteins in your diet. Sugary foods will cause your blood sugar levels to fluctuate dramatically, and oily foods are difficult to digest. Be sure to stay well hydrated. I found water with fresh lemon squeezed into it to be particularly helpful. Avoid sugar laden sodas, and drink mineral water if you are craving something fizzy. Vitamin B-6 can be helpful for relieving nausea and regulating blood sugar levels. Ginger is a celebrated anti-nausea herb, but should be taken in small doses, with caution. It is an emmenagogue (able to stimulate menstruation in large amounts), therefore it should be avoided altogether if you have a history of miscarriage. Chamomile and peppermint teas are safe, soothing herbs.

urture is a new department for HB Magazine! Over the next 12 months, Allison Prater will cover topics ranging from prenatal health to simplicity parenting. We hope you enjoy the first installment of this exciting new series... Pregnancy is one of the most amazing transformations that we as women get to experience. As someone who has been studying to be a doula, and is currently embarking on the adventure of motherhood herself, I thought I’d share some information on how to support a healthy, happy pregnancy. You should still consult with your care provider about any concerns you may have before undertaking any of these suggestions. The first trimester of pregnancy is one of the most dramatic changes. All of the baby’s essential structures have been formed within about eight weeks. From here on out they continue to grow and develop. Because your body is working so hard to grow this new human being during this time, you may experience two of the most classic early pregnancy symptoms: nausea and fatigue.
The second trimester of pregnancy is sometimes called, “the honeymoon period.” By this time, you generally start to feel better; the nausea subsides and your energy returns. Though you are starting to show, you are still able to move around and sleep pretty comfortably. This is also when you start to feel your baby’s first movements. One common issue that many women experience during this stage is headaches. Sometimes this is because of stress, or lack of rest. Other
Personally, I think the term “morning sickness” is a misnomer, as many women— myself included—experience nausea and sensitivity to smells at all hours of the day and night. Some women

times it is due to an iron or protein deficiency. Having a high-protein breakfast, and at least one more serving of a complete protein, daily can eliminate headaches. Adding calcium and magnesium to the diet is also helpful. This can be taken it in the form of a supplement and by making sure to include lots of leafy greens in your diet.
two hours before bed, as lying down aggravates heartburn. Slippery elm lozenges can bring relief, and they are perfectly safe as long as they don’t contain other herbs such as coltsfoot or comfrey root. There are many more common issues that take place during pregnancy, but to describe them in detail is beyond the scope of this article. Some of the best guidelines for a healthy, happy pregnancy are the simplest. Eat a balanced diet of whole, organic foods, being sure to include plenty of complete proteins, calcium, whole grains, and a variety of fruits and veggies. Choose an organic, food-based prenatal vitamin. DHA is another beneficial supplement. Drink lots of water throughout the day to stay hydrated. Get regular exercise and rest when you need to. Most importantly, listen to your body. It will tell you when you need to eat, sleep, etc. Tuning into your body’s needs is teaching you to listen to your baby’s needs, preparing you for the amazing adventure that is motherhood.
By the third trimester of pregnancy your baby is growing rapidly. This can put added strain on your muscles. Some women may start to experience aches and pains in the low back, upper back, shoulders and hips. They may find it difficult to sleep comfortably. Some say that the interrupted sleep one experiences while pregnant is preparing you for waking up during the night with your baby. Prenatal massage, yoga, pilates, dance and swimming are all beneficial to your body, helping you to maintain healthy alignment. Sitting on an inflatable exercise ball instead of chairs and couches can help keep your pelvis in a good position. A hot bath with epsom salts, and essential oils such as lavender, rosemary, lemon balm, or a combination of these, can help to soothe muscle aches. These oils can also be combined with carrier oils such as coconut or sweet almond oil to create relaxing massage oils. Paying attention and practicing good posture throughout the day is essential.

The baby is taking up an increased amount of space in your abdomen; it is normal to experience a feeling of fullness after eating a small amount of food, and sometimes even heartburn. How to Become A Better Piano Playe r In Six Months!

ost piano players don’t get better because they recycle their practice. They simply play what they practiced the first few months over the next six years (or more). If you want to become good at the piano in the shortest amount of time, you’ve got to do it differently. The key is deliberate practice. To practice deliberately means to purposely intend to improve performance. Here are a few key points to help you practice deliberately.

Have an intention—have an intention whenever you sit down to practice the piano. It doesn’t have to be written down, but you could say to yourself, for example, “today I intend to improve my performance of ‘Green Sleeves.’” Focus on one area at a time—this will build up your confidence as you master one area at a time. With the “Green Sleeves” example, if you feel you’re having a difficult time with the left hand chord, work on your left hand alone until you can do it

smoothly. Never move on until you’ve mastered a specific skill. Practice on something that is slightly beyond your competency— always practice on tougher pieces, skills or techniques. It’s okay to practice pieces that you already know for the purpose of memorization, but don’t get comfortable and practice just that. This is the mistake that most piano players make. Strive to go outside your comfort zone. Done with three chord songs? Move on with four, five, six chord songs. Consistency—15 minutes of practice a day every day is superior to two hours a day, once a week. Your brain makes better connections when your practices are not too far apart. Evaluate your performance—ask for feedback whenever possible from a teacher, a friend or a family member. They don’t have to be musically inclined. Just ask them to judge your overall performance and how or what you can improve. You’ll be surprised at the valuable pointers they can give that you would not be able to notice yourself. If you don’t have anyone readily available, tape yourself and be your own critique. Again, you’ll

These five key points will help you become a piano player faster than most students out there: have an intention, focus on one at a time, go beyond your current level of competency and be consistent with practicing and evaluating your performance. Form these habits from the beginning and your success at the piano will be much higher.

Something fishy About fish oils! Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.
or decades we have all been convinced that high doses of omega-3 fats (fish and flax oil) are good for us. They are supposed to protect us from heart disease, inflammation, cancer and cognitive decline. A growing body of evidence seems to prove otherwise. A new comprehensive study indicates that, as far as the cancer protection is concerned, this may all be a myth. In 2006, The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study that concluded “A large body of evidence, spanning numerous groups from many countries and with different demographic characteristics does not provide evidence to suggest any significant association between omega-3 fatty acids and the incidence of cancer. Dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids is unlikely to prevent cancer.” We have all been told that fish oil is good for your health. This has now been proven wrong because it’s based on incomplete and flawed science. Fish oil consists only of an inferior and potentially harmful form of Omega-3’s called “derivatives.” Omega-3 derivatives are NOT essential fatty acids. There are two Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) that must be ingested each day—Omega-6 and Omega-3. The Parent form of these EFAs cannot be manufactured by your body. Most supplement manufacturers and most nutritionists do not understand the importance of consuming these “Parent” EFAs. A very interesting fact: of the five longest lived societies on the planet, none of them are on an ocean shore and none of them consume fish! The prime cause of cancer has little to do with the current “anti-cancer” recommendations, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, denying meat, increasing exercise and so-called “healthy eating.” Neither is the prime cause of cancer genetic. The prime cause of cancer was proven over 80 years ago to be

abnormal transport of oxygen across the cell membrane. The cell membrane is made up mainly of three layers of fats (lipids). The inner and outer layers are made of omega-6 EFAs and the middle layer is made of omega-3s. That is why these oils must be consumed in a 2:1 ratio, on a daily basis. Improper maintenance of healthy cell membranes causes improper oxygen transport into the cell, which at a certain point, causes it to switch to an abnormal way of burning sugar called anaerobic metabolism. This is the main form of energy production in cancer cells. This fact was proven in conventional research in the 1920s, and then pretty much ignored by conventional oncology since then. While fish oil has many advocates, real life clinical results prove that fish (and flax) oil DOES NOT prevent heart attacks or cancer. Only the proper combination of Parent Omega-6 and Omega-3 EFAs can do that. What to do? The quick answer is Hemp oil. It is the only single oil on the market that provides close to the ideal ratio of 6s to 3s. However, studies have not been done on it. Studies do show that a combination of oils provide the ideal combination…more info on that next month. References:

Stress, Adrenal Glands and Sexual Responsiveness Continued from page 7
The medulla, the inside part of the adrenal gland, makes adrenaline, which gives us that uncomfortable fight-or-flight response, sweaty palms, knot in the stomach, feelings of fearfulness and anxiety, insomnia, and, in more extreme cases, racing heart and panic. For this reason, the adrenal is also known as the stress gland. Stress researcher Hans Selye, M.D., taught us that all stresses affect the adrenal gland. Whether it is stress caused by our spouse, children, parents, work, heavy metals, parasites, poor diet, lack of sleep, pain, chronic illness, or any other cause you can think of, they all work on the adrenal gland. The usual job of the adrenal cortex is to maintain blood sugar by storing glycogen (sugars in a long chain) in the liver. When we are stressed we use up all our adrenal reserves, and our blood sugar begins to drop. The brain registers this drop in blood sugar and signals to the adrenal medulla to start pouring out adrenaline into the bloodstream. This adrenaline mobilizes fat and takes it to the liver to be converted into blood sugar. This is all well and good. The blood sugar comes back up and our body doesn’t die—but now we are flooded with adrenaline. This happens to many people in the middle of the night. You might have experienced it yourself: you wake up with a start with lots of energy and begin reviewing your life history or the recent stressful events of the day. The adrenals are a big deal in many people’s sex lives. People usually feel sexier on vacation when the stress level is down. They can relax and also make up their sleep deficit. Many couples complain that they are just too tired to be interested in sex. A great rule for rebuilding the adrenals: “rest is the best.” One can guarantee that if one spouse is feeling fearful and anxious, he or she is definitely not feeling very sexy. Stress can likewise affect the man who has just had prostate surgery or is taking medication that interferes with his erection. He worries about it, the adrenaline pours out, and the anxiety about his performance further dismantles his sexual response. Stress about one’s appearance can also affect sexuality. Being overweight is a factor influenced by the adrenal gland. People who can’t mobilize their fat to make energy always have a depleted adrenal gland. Your adrenal cortex must be healthy in order to turn fat into blood sugar. When the adrenals are stressed and the fat begins to accumulate, people turn to sugar and carbohydrates to get some energy. When eating carbohydrates, the insulin comes out of the pancreas and stores all the calories as fat and the vicious cycle begins. So how can we maintain healthy adrenal glands and ensure

our optimal sexual life? Begin by doing everything you can do to reduce stress. Resolve conflicts in your relationships, enjoy your work, stay positive in the midst of a negative world, help others, keep up a spiritual life with prayer and meditation, and, very importantly, understand how to supplement your diet with nutrients and hormonal support. Health-oriented physicians should have a broad range of tools to support the adrenal gland. Start with some basic principles. Use additive-free sea salt. Heresy? Not really. Unless you are very sick and in the end stages of congestive heart failure with swollen ankles and shortness of breath, even people with high blood pressure can take some salt without much problem, according to the National Institutes of Health. Salt levels in the body are controlled by the adrenal glands, and if you don’t take in any salt, the adrenal has to work a lot harder to hold the salt in the body. Strange as it sounds, adequate salt intakes mean healthy blood sugar levels. All of the adrenal hormones, and all the sex hormones for that matter, are steroids. Steroids are made from cholesterol. You need good sources of cholesterol. Forget the margarine and only eat butter. Keep up a good protein intake, which will also provide good sources of cholesterol. Remember what Dr. Robert Atkins and many others have told us: it is a high-carbohydrate diet that produces high cholesterol, not a high-cholesterol diet. In addition to basic diet considerations, supplementation is extremely important to keep our adrenal glands healthy in the face of the enormous stress most of us face in our daily lives. The highest concentration of vitamin C in the human body is in the adrenal cortex. I recommend patients take 3,000 mg to 5,000 mg before bed. And patients under extreme stress can take many times this much without getting diarrhea. But don’t expect to be able to take this much vitamin C if you use a cheap product. Lower-quality ascorbic acid is very acidic and upsetting to the stomach and intestines, producing gas and diarrhea at much lower dosages. It is much better to take buffered vitamin C, which is much less acidic and easier on the system. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is very important in adrenal health. I advise people to take 500 mg or more, two or three times per day. It is great for energy, allergy, colds and flu, and sexuality. Adrenal extracts from the health food store can be very helpful. Tablets of adrenal cortex from your physician give great energy and are not too stimulating. Whole adrenal tablets really help energy levels but should not be taken too late in the day if there is a problem with sleep. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a major adrenal cortex hormone that declines with age; when supplemented, it improves energy and Libido. Pregnenolone is another adrenal hormone

available over-the-counter, and helps mood, energy, memory, vision, and hearing. Androstenedione is a direct precursor of testosterone in the adrenals, and, although short-lived, can have a salutary effect on sexuality. For people with more impaired adrenals, your preventive medicine doctor should have a range of adrenal supportive and replacement suggestions, including homeopathics, amino acids, herbals, and hormonal support. It is much better to balance your stress with lifestyle and supplementation strategies than to let it tear down your adrenals and impair sexuality. And remember: Always check with your health care provider before beginning any course of treatment.

A New Beginning A
Written By June Milligan, Med., CCHt
s we start the year 2013, I think everyone can agree that we need to adopt a new way of looking at things. We haven’t had all the information we need in order to live a productive life and to be happy. Our parents didn’t have it and neither did their parents. We’ve been fumbling around through life trying to figure things out, each generation doing the best they can with the information that was available. A few very brilliant people, who were willing and able to think outside the box, figured out a major part of how life works. But the rest of us sort of grope along, trying this, trying that; we attempt to juggle family and work responsibilities so that we can have some time for ourselves, to have fun, to think, to meditate, to read, to understand what’s really going on with life and to hopefully develop a higher consciousness.
As in all things, it’s necessary to begin at the beginning. The Laws are as follows: 1) The Law of Attraction: like attracts like; 2) The Law of Deliberate Intent: what is intended and held resolutely within thought, word and deed manifests; 3) The Law of Allowance: allowing what is intended to manifest while using the observer mode in order to be awake and aware, and while continuing to hold the focus of what you want without being too rigid as to the outcome; 4) The Law of Balance: applying the first three laws and focusing within the present moment. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? It may be simple, but it isn’t that easy (to get what you want) when you’ve only recently become aware of them, and you haven’t been consciously watching anyone model them for you. Ironically we’ve been unconsciously using these laws all our lives. Sporadically, haphazardly. That’s why we’ve been creating such chaos, as individuals and as a society. The Law of Attraction was popularized by the Esther Hicks books, which spawned many other copycat books, as well as the movie The Secret. In fact, the best source for the first three Laws is the Esther Hicks books. Almost everything else is a watered down version. Law number four is simply applying the first three while staying in present time.
During the last few decades, millions of people have become more conscious of what this life is all about and what they need to do in order to create a happy satisfying existence. “Millions” is still a small percentage of the seven billion who live on this planet. But numbers aren’t as important as awareness and intention; so a small percentage of highly evolved thinkers can affect the unconscious billions, in a positive way through the vibrational frequencies of their thoughts. That small percentage is growing every day as people learn about the four major laws of the universe, and put them into practice.

Many people think the Law of Attraction is all about attracting physical things. That’s just one part of it. Anything you want can be attracted using that Law, for it’s working 24/7 every day of the year. Also anything you don’t want can be attracted. The Law itself is neutral. It just gives you what you focus on. The truth is, we get what we focus on, whether we want it or not. The Law gives you what you expect because expecting something is focusing on it. Fearing something is focusing on it. Being angry or disappointed much of the time is attracting more people or situations that will bring more anger or disappointment.
anyone attempting to climb out because of programming, or “shoulds.” We were not designed to follow the leader and believe everything we hear from the media or from the socalled “authorities.” We were designed to think for ourselves, invent, create, soar and prosper, laugh, love and live life to the fullest. But in order to do that we have to think outside of the box. It’s dark in that box, and musty, full of old worn out ideas. See that crack of light? Can you pry the lid open just a little to see what’s on the outside? It looks interesting! Shout at somebody out there to help you open the lid. Maybe someone will push a book in through the crack. That book gives you more motivation! You push harder, and finally with great creaking, the lid falls back and you’re looking at a whole new world of ideas! Now you’re free to think what you want, believe what you want and assist others who may still be trapped in their boxes of old thought. You’re ready for new thought and A NEW BEGINNING. Happy New Year!
There’s really no reason in this day and age for anyone not to know these Laws and to be able to put them into effect. The challenge is that we haven’t been raised with these ideas, so they’re not second nature to us. It takes some determination and consistency to prove to yourself that these Laws work to bring you what you want and to prove that you have within your mind and body all you need in order to live a happy, empowered and fulfilled life. You have a built-in meridian energy system, which can soothe or heal. You have a built-in chakra system… vortices of energy that help heal and balance your body. You have a built-in emotional guidance system that not only tells you what you’re thinking, but tells you what’s coming. Most people don’t know how to use these built-in systems, because our parents didn’t know how; it wasn’t mainstream knowledge, at least not here in the West.

So we’ve been fumbling around, trying to stay healthy and live a happy life without knowing the basic truth about our own minds and bodies and how they work together with the Universe, through quantum physics. It’s nice to know that our thoughts create our reality, but HOW? Most thinking people are not willing to accept things on faith anymore. We want to know “how” and we want to know “why.”

Physicists are sneaking up on the truth more than any other scientific discipline. Truths about the Universe that mystics have known for centuries are now being explained by physics. But most of those explanations are not written in easy-tounderstand words. However, when we can “get” that the vibrational frequencies of our thoughts and emotions impact the invisible energy all around us all the way out to the edge of the universe (as well as flood our own bodies) then we begin to understand HOW we create our reality. The books at the end of this article will be very helpful toward understanding how to put the four laws into practice. This will help to create a new beginning for yourself as well as everyone around you, by positively affecting the sea of energy we live in. We were not designed to wallow in victim consciousness, behaving like crabs in a basket, pulling back

A Year for
Personal Atonement
“Going Within”
A
Written By Rev. Jack R. Elliott, Author and Spiritual Life Coach something was amiss. Then we’d explore why they didn’t act in that very moment. That very moment when their intuition was saying, “Don’t trust him,” but they did anyway.
s for me in my house, this is the year for personal atonement. This is the year of cleaning it up, making it right, make amends, forgiving it all and moving on. I am admitting once and for all that “Yes, I am accountable for the sins of my past.” When I speak of “sins,” I use the phrase as many progressive theologians use it: to sin is to “miss the mark.” This year, I’ll clean up what I can, ask for forgiveness where I must, but never again will I carry the burdens of yesterday into my tomorrow.
For many of my clients, failing to see the “sins” of others was a means to camouflage their own sins. It was as if they were internally saying, “I don’t want to see the element of you that is untrustworthy, for if I did, then I would have to look at and acknowledge my own elements of untrustworthiness. If I first refuse to see your shortcomings, then hopefully, you’ll not see mine. And if you do see mine, you’ll quickly forgive me, because, after all, I forgave you first.”
For the last twelve months, I’ve listened to client after client agonizing over failed agreements. Agreements that they didn’t keep with others and more importantly, the agreements they didn’t keep with themselves. They’ve come to me with broken marriages, relationships and friendships. Together, we dug down into the past to discover when they first knew that

in your own life—this was indeed true for me as well. As 2012 came to an end, I knew that what was true for my clients was true for me. I have secrets, broken relationships and broken agreements. I far too often said “yes” when I should have said “no.” The consequences of my secrets, broken relationships and agreements manifested into the burdens that occupied my mind. But this year, I want it to be different. I want to release the burdens of regret that I carried into the New Year; I want to free my mind of the past so I can more fully live in the present. It’s time to dig into that bag of burdens one last time, and to burry some of it once and for all; I will make amends, forgive and live anew in 2013. I call this process “personal atonement.” When I speak of Personal Atonement, I’m speaking of taking a discerning look at each of the burdens that I stuffed into my bag of regret. To look at each one and ask, “how am I accountable for this being here?” I may not be responsible for it being there, but I am accountable. For example, being single at 60 is not easy; every new “potential” is measured against the qualities of the “ex” who left me. That is until I realized that that to even think about the ex was proof that I was still not complete with the ex. The incomplete aspect I still had not handled (atoned for within myself): to be fully accountable for the relationship ending. When I truly looked, I could see that I knew the relationship was over, way before they ended it. I had to forgive myself for not valuing myself enough to say “this isn’t working, for me!” Instead I set it up so they would leave me. It gave me something to overcome, to prove to myself that I was “the good person.” That was my accountability in the game. That was my secret. What a burden to carry! We all have secrets. We all have burdens. However, we have to be accountable for the cost of carrying those secrets in our consciousness. Someone reading this has lied to their spouse, cheated on their spouse, betrayed a friend, stolen from their employer, or is leading a double life—and no one knows but them. It’s their secret. Such secrets are draining. They age us; they challenge our immune system and they rob our potential. In this New Year, let’s begin anew; let us face those burdens—one at a time—and handle them once and for all. Let’s support one another to clean up what we can, ask for forgiveness where we must, but never again carry the burdens of yesterday into our tomorrows.

Are “Green,” All-Purpose Cleaners Truly Safe, or Just Another Example of Green-Washing?
W
Written By Lissie Lyles
e humans are funny creatures. We have come to value the appearance and smells of a clean home, but some of the products we’ve used to accomplish this task could be considered dirty in their own right. Sure, they remove dust, dirt, soap scum, and maybe even germs, but what do they leave behind? Many popular household cleaning products leave residue of toxic chemicals, some of which have fumes that permeate the air we breathe. It is especially dangerous when these products are used on surfaces in our kitchens, because the food we eat often comes into contact with them, resulting in the unknown consumption of toxic residue. If you bathe in a tub that has been cleaned with these toxic substances, it is probable that some of them will be absorbed through your skin. When you think about it this way, if we are dousing our homes in harmful materials, can we really consider them to be clean at all? In recent years there have been a growing number of “green” non-toxic, bio-degradable cleaning products. Today we will examine several popular brands of all-purpose cleaners that are marketed under the “green” heading:

Clorox Green Works, All Purpose Cleaner: alkyl polyglucoside, colorant, ethanol, fragrance with essential oils, potassium carbonate, potassium citrate, preservative
Simple Green All Purpose Cleaner: water, 2-butoxyethanol, ethoxylated alcohol, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, sodium citrate, fragrance proprietary mixture, colorant.
Method All Purpose Cleaner with Powergreen Technology: Water, decyl glucoside, lauryl glucoside, sodium carbonate, sodium gluconate, lauryl ethoxylate, potassium citrate, fragrance, polymeric colorant.
Seventh Generation, All Purpose Cleaner: Water, caprylyl/myristyl glucoside, lauramine oxide, sodium gluconate, sodium carbonate, methylisothiazolinone and bezisothiazolinone. All of these products’ makers made their ingredient lists easy to access on their websites (the same cannot be said about may processed food companies!). Clorox and Method broke down their ingredient list, item by item explaining how the ingredients

were mostly plant based, non-toxic, and non-irritating. Simple Green and Seventh Generation post links to their Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), which display that their ingredients are biodegradable and cause minimal problems, if any. For example, most of the ingredients are not shown to irritate the eyes or skin, and if accidently ingested may cause some digestive discomfort, but will not be life threatening. In short, all of these products could generally be considered safe for in-home use, especially when compared to mainstream commercial cleaning products. That being said, all of these products contain hard to pronounce ingredients, most of which are heavily manufactured. Greenworks and Method both contain artificial colors and fragrances. Many of the ingredients in these products are corn-based, and there is no way of knowing if they are from GMO corn. From an environmental standpoint, if a product contains 10 or more separate ingredients, it is safe to assume that the raw materials from each separate ingredient have been shipped and processed several times in order to create the finished product. This requires the use of large amounts of fossil fuel. Furthermore, every time a new bottle of cleaner is manufactured, it requires a plastic container. There are many advantages to making one’s own green household cleaners. Not only are you saving money, but you also reduce your fossil fuel consumption by reducing the number of ingredients required. By re-using the same plastic spray bottles, you reduce your plastic consumption and trash output as well. Finally, many of the most effective cleaning ingredients are food-grade, so they are perfectly safe and will not cause allergic reactions, or leave toxic fumes and residue behind. Food grade hydrogen peroxide has many advantages. It is best used in a diluted form, meaning a little goes a long way. It is effective against mold, mildew and bacteria. When combined with baking soda, it can remove stubborn stains from carpets and upholstery. Other effective raw ingredients include white vinegar, borax, essential oils, castile soap and fresh citrus. For some fun, safe and easy DIY cleaning product recipes see the links in the list of references. Just as it pays to know the ingredients in your food, it pays to know the ingredients that make up the products that clean your home. Choose carefully! References:

HERBS&SPICES
Cleavers G
Written By Allison Prater
alium Aparine, or Cleavers, is an herbaceous annual that has many funny nicknames. Some of the most colorful include Goosegrass, Catchweed, Robin-run-the-hedge and Grip Grass. Native to North America, Cleavers grows long creeping stems, which extend along the ground. The small hooked hairs on the stems and leaves help them attach to smaller plants, allowing the plant to climb. The stems are square-shaped and can grow to be three feet or longer. The plant produces tiny, white or light green flowers in the early spring, which become small round fruits clustered as one to three seeds. They are covered with hooked hairs as well, and these burs often find themselves stuck to animal fur, helping the seed to be dispersed.
of fresh juice, tea, infusion or tincture. The whole plant may be used to make a poultice, which can be applied topically to skin aliments, light wounds, burns, insect bites and stings. Cleavers has enjoyed some interesting non-edible uses as well. For example, shepherds in ancient Greece would use the barbed stems to make a “rough sieve” through which they would strain milk. This method was also used by shepherds in Sweden, and though rare, can still be seen in practice to this day. In other parts of Europe the dried and matted stems and leaves were once used to stuff mattresses. They helped to provide a uniform thickness because the branches cling to one another. The roots of Cleavers can also be used to make red textile dye.
The leaves and stems of cleavers are edible. Though they can be consumed raw, because of their spiny surface, they are more palatable when steamed or sautéed. As it is in the same family as the coffee plant, the fruit that Cleavers produces can be roasted, dried and used as a low-caffeine substitute.
Though Cleavers is considered a fairly gentle medicinal herb, it is best to first consult a health professional who has a good understanding of herbal remedies before ingesting this plant for the purposes of healing. References:
Medicinally, Cleavers is prized for its diuretic properties, as well as its astringent and anti-inflammatory actions. It is regarded as a powerful tonic for the lymphatic system. It is helpful for many conditions that involve the lymph system, such as enlarged tonsils or adenoids. It can benefit ulcers or tumors that have resulted from poor lymph system drainage. It is also used in treating eruptions of the skin, such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Because of its diuretic actions it is used to treat inflammatory conditions of the bladder and kidneys, including kidney stones. The aerial parts of the plant can be taken internally in the form

KIDSCORNER
5…4…3…2…1…Happy New Year! It is finally here,
and so is your fresh start! A new year to do whatever you didn’t do last year. This year can be your year to get better grades, exercise more, eat healthier or even plan to make new friends. Whatever it is, this is the time to make a difference in your life. Here is an activity below to help get you started with your bright new year! Make sure to answer each question truthfully:
1. Did you make any new friends last year? 2. Did you exercise at all last year? 3. Did you try eating healthy food last year? 4. What sport did you do last year? 5. What extracurricular activity did you do last year? 6. How were your grades last year?
“Kids Corner”
Written By Ariana Purcell
All the questions above should have been yes, except for question seven. If some of your answers were “no,” or you had a hard time thinking about the answer, it says something; it says that this year is your time to make a change! For example, work on making a new friend. Or, if you didn’t exercise, make that change this year and help your body. Make a promise to go to the gym, and then plan out a schedule to help you keep your promise. You could also get involved and join an activity outside of school; something to keep you busy. Your grades should always be very important to you as well. So, if your grades aren’t looking so hot, now is the time to change them! I hope you answered the last question honestly. This question is supposed to help you change the one thing you regretted most from last year; something you did or did not do. But, no matter if you only change a few things this year, or everything on this list, just make sure to make a change for the good, and help yourself have the greatest New Year ever! Have a Happy 2013!
7. What is one thing you regret most about last year?

“Me too,” Jessie said. “I’ll use the last of the ones I grew.”
I swelled. Jessie is the baby of the family, and I take my responsibilities as an older sister seriously. Here was a chance to give her a little Instruction. I wasn’t going to miss it.
“You grew sweet potatoes? How did they do that far north?” “A couple of them didn’t produce anything, but the rest of them averaged a half an ice cream pail of tubers each.” “Mine did about that,” I said, hoping she couldn’t see the mental

didn’t mention that with the cost of the slips, shipping, and the “idiot tax” I’d paid when I allowed some of them to freeze, I could have almost paid market value for the tubers I harvested. The idiot tax is probably my biggest garden expense. Quite a few catalogs offer sweet potato slips. I’d ordered mine from a website whose URL included the name “Tatorman.” Ordinarily, I’d be wary of a name like that, but I’d seen the company praised in several blogs. The slips were in good condition when they arrived. The company sells several varieties. I chose Vardeman because it stores well. I might have gotten better yields if I’d planted Georgia Jets, which are recommended for Northern gardens because they mature quickly. The popular variety Beauregard is only a little slower than the Jets, and is likewise recommended. After I finished informing Jessie, I asked where she bought hers. “I didn’t,” she said. A few of the sweet potatoes she bought at the store to eat sprouted, and she planted them just like potatoes. I pointed out her error in assuming the two “potatoes” were related. I’m sure that if I teach her the good practices I use, her yields will be on par with mine. Both of us missed out on the cheapest way to get the most plants for the least money, and that is to start slips from sweet potatoes you buy at the store. There are two ways to do this. You can suspend a tuber, cut in half or not, in a jar of water with toothpicks, or you can halfbury the tuber in moist potting soil. It helps if you keep a warm house; they sprout best at eighty degrees. In either case, when the sprouts get a few inches tall, you can gently remove them, and root them in water, or plant them in potting soil. I have not tried this method, but I understand that if you’re gentle in removing the slips, the eyes will regrow, and you can get quite a few plants from one tuber. You will have to think ahead, and allow yourself several weeks to accumulate enough slips and get them rooted. You will want to wait to plant them outside until after danger of frost is over, or protect them with plastic or row cover. Next year, I plan to get slips from store-bought Beauregards. I’ll begin in late March or early April. With attention and care, they should be ready to harvest before the first frost in September. That will give me several months to think up a scientific reason to give when Jessie’s sweet potatoes once again outproduce mine.
When Teresa Howell is not performing her big-sister duties, she teaches English at Great Basin College.

BOOKREVIEW
Happier Than God Turn Ordinary Life into an Extraordinary Experience
Written by Neale Donald Walsch Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
known it; some contemporary spiritual messengers know it, but it’s become thought of as a “mystery formula” because it’s not talked about very much. Why? Because it’s hard to believe what that formula is said to be able to produce. And when you talk about things that few people have been exposed to, things that are not “mainstream knowledge,” you can become very unpopular. Walsch states that even in this time of intellectual and spiritual enlightenment, most of the teachers who are talking about this formula are revealing only half of it. And what good is a truth if it’s not fully revealed?
N
eale Donald Walsch is well known for his Conversations with God series and describes himself as a “modern day spiritual messenger.” He’s written 27 books, and in this latest one he chiefly expounds on the “law of attraction” school of thought and how becoming familiar with that law and all its nuances is vital to understanding how life works. This is not a simple law. It has implications far beyond just thinking about what you want and expecting it to show up, (hopefully soon). His framework is a multi-step “Process of Personal Creation,” which at its base is the ancient idea that the Divine exists in all of us; indeed that we are extensions or “individuations” of the Divine, and that nothing could or does exist outside of that energy. We have free will to choose what we think, how we feel and what we do, as an extension of that Divine Consciousness, while using the undifferentiated energy of Divine Consciousness to create our lives. Our experiences, as a result of our free will, add to All That Is, which is simply another word for God or Higher Power. Having a happy life involves knowing a formula. Walsch says all mystics have known it; all teachers of spiritual wisdom have

The author begins with a chapter titled The Startling Truth that Will Stun the World, and goes on to explain The Most Important Question Ever Asked, then describes how we can understand The Miracle that Will Change Your Life, The True Nature of God, Why the Process of Creation Has Been Kept under Wraps and the best way to use the Process of Personal Creation. He explains that you’re using quantum physics all the time in your endeavor to live a happier life; with the correct use of that unseen energy, you can attain the health, prosperity and happy relationships that make life worth living. This is an extraordinary book in that it brings together many concepts that have been only half explored or explained. The author spent years searching for spiritual meaning even before beginning his now-famous Conversation with God series. That work has been translated into 37 languages, has touched millions and has inspired important changes in people’s dayto-day lives. But he continues to do the research, ask the important questions and expand his understanding. This book contains a compelling message that can change your life. He puts the pieces together like a puzzle, making it possible to see the whole picture. Happier than God is available at local bookstores or from www.amazon.com.

L-i-n-k
W
hen my grandmother passed, her final words were simple, yet full of depth. She said, “Pay attention” with the last ounce of vigor in her body. Although it seems a basic task, most of us tend to traipse through life with our eyes half open. L-i-n-k is one of HB Mag’s new departments for the year of 2013 and beyond. It is a window into what connects our past to our present and future. It is the path we are drawn to and choose over others. It is the “six degrees of separation” we stumble upon. Some of us call them coincidence, others call them signs; little signals carrying pertinent information. There may or may not be great meaning to derive from our discoveries; nonetheless, we find ourselves sharing these stories with others, as they often spark imagination and possibility. As I was finishing up the editorial calendar for the New Year, I happened upon one of those stories myself… Last August, I received an invite to attend an event in Oakland titled, “Breakthrough to Boldness, with Iyanla Vanzant.” I eagerly accepted and became excited about the upcoming event. Truthfully, I did not know much about the speaker, but I knew she had been on “Oprah” regularly and that she had authored several books. I was also excited to hear the uplifting music performed by Branice Mckenzie, the Minister of Music for the church that presented the event.
A few weeks after the event, I grabbed a familiar book from my bedside collection. I had perused this book for years, opening it when I needed a dose of inspiration. The cover was missing, the book fairly worn and the author, a detail unknown. For some reason, my fingers led me to the title page that day, and it read, “Until Today! Daily Devotions for Spiritual Growth and Peace of Mind,” written by Iyanla Vanzant.
The evening was filled with spirit-lifting music and stories. Ms. Vanzant offered great insight, encouraging words and a few belly laughs that drew tears to my eyes. It was like a miniworkshop, beautifully wrapped with sparkly ribbons and bows. This presentation was a call to action. Ms. Vanzant spoke about pain, healing that pain and identifying who we need to forgive in order to do so. This was not a new concept to me, but the perspective she offered was inspiring. She pointed out that these painful events--large or small--played a role in holding us back from our “boldness.”
I was shocked. All this time and I had been reading her words without knowing it. I am not even sure where the book came from. Did I receive it from a friend, a co-worker, my mom? At that point, it did not really matter. The encouragement and fascination of the connection was present. It filled me with hope; an answer to my uncertainty. Sometimes, we’re on the right path, we just need a little sign to confirm it.
We can all break the barrier, or the thin glass that surrounds us, and find our path toward a bolder life. One that is authentic to our true self. It all starts with being truthful and honest to the person we often lie to the most…ourselves.
In the coming months, we’ll discuss more important l-i-n-k-s and the ties that bind us. In the meantime, feel free to share your stories with us at editor@hbmag.com. We would love to hear from you!

BRAINHEALTH
An Unhealthy and Aging Brain - Part 1 Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.
“Everything you have ever experienced, felt, or conducted in life is due to brain function.
T
The ability to enjoy, perceive, sense and experience life is dictated by the firing rate and health of your brain. It is impossible for a person to become healthy mentally or physiologically without a healthy brain. — Datis Kharrazian, DC, DHSC, MS
”
he degenerating brain is a real consequence for all of us in society today. Every year we become older and lose more neurons (brain cells) as a consequence of normal biological aging. Our brains and neurons are constantly affected by inflammatory responses, abnormal immune activation (autoimmune problems such as MS, celiac, fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s, etc), blood sugar fluctuations (hypoglycemia, insulin resistance, or diabetes), liver detoxification failures, deficiencies of critical nutrients, and most importantly from a lack of stimulation in today’s sedentary and passive entertainment (think TV’s/Computers). The brain is essential for every aspect of our physiology, our cognitive experiences (attention, memory, language, reasoning, problem solving, and decision making), the emotions we feel and essentially who we perceive we are.
summarize the vast amount of information and research that has been discovered in the now never ending “Decade of the Brain” era, and help the lay public to understand these new discoveries and how they apply to you. More importantly, it is the brain model of alternative medicine that offers the most hope for the future health of this countries sick patient population. Why is it that even in Time Magazine’s medically oriented cover article in 2011 the alternative models of spinal manipulation, massage, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, biofeedback, sound therapy, yoga, meditation, and nutritional are all acknowledged as holding far more potential to stop brain degeneration, improve healing, and achieve anti-aging—more so than the current traditional approaches; especially when these approaches are individually tailored to that person’s specific dysfunctional “firing rate.”
Everyone “knows” the brain is important, but we rarely make an effort to keep it healthy. We are more inclined to focus on our physical appearances than the state of health of our brain, which essentially influences everything including our physical appearance. Additionally, healthcare providers are not trained to identify early signs of brain deterioration, or more importantly, trained to help optimize or correct abnormal function of the brain. We have no specialty in the entire traditional healthcare system—including neurology—that has a full understanding for supporting and optimizing the health of the brain. Healthcare providers are only taught to look at extreme disorders of the brain, and have limited understandings of how poor brain function leads to hypertension (ever wonder why you have high blood pressure?), poor digestion, sexual dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, abnormal pain perception (think fibromyalgia, RSD), bladder incontinence, UTI’s and more—much, much more. We have a tendency to treat the consequences of these conditions without ever considering the specific relationships of these things to the one organ that controls everything: the brain.
In subsequent articles parts II and III, we will discuss the physiology of the brain in a manner that will provide you with an astonishingly simple understanding of your complex brain. More importantly, we will discuss the above therapies and how, in proper combination, they can stop the brain degenerative processes, which are endemic to today’s social health problems, and recover normal or close to normal brain function. The understanding of these concepts will change the way you look at yourself and how you pursue your health care needs forever. Stay tuned!
In 1990, President George Bush declared the 90’s the decade of the brain. In the following two articles there will be an attempt to

Tips
How to be Influential
I
nfluencing people is more vital than ever in today’s challenging and uncertain work environment. Using your influence positively, liaising with others and getting things done through other people are all critical for your success in working life today. Fiona Dent explains how to get people to cooperate and listen to your ideas. Being influential demands much more than simply knowing your stuff and being an expert in your area. Influencing is both a leadership and relationship skill. Influencing isn’t rocket science, but neither is it easy. In addition to knowing your topic, it’s largely about recognizing the importance of using soft skills to get hard results.
2. Active listening It is easy to fall into the trap of simply advocating your own views and ideas on any issue you are seeking to influence—but it is much better to gather intelligence about the other stakeholders’ perspectives. Listening to what they have to say gives you the opportunity to consider their perspectives and decide how best to incorporate this knowledge and information into the issue.
3. Flexibility You need to be able to adapt to others’ ideas. Lack of flexibility is one of the fatal traps that influencers can fall into. By definition, influencing usually means you have a point of view about a topic and your aim is to get others to buy into this view. But they will have their own opinions on the subject—so it is important to go into any discussion with the mindset that you might have to flex your ideas and approach to achieve a mutually acceptable outcome.
Here are ten practical tips to help develop your influencing credibility, capability and reputation—and contribute to getting the results you want.
1. Be patient Influencing is a process, not an event or a one-off occurrence. Most discussions take place over a period of time, involve multiple stakeholders and are affected by our current experience of the people concerned. The impression they have had of us in previous conversations and our ability to enter into a meaningful dialogue with them are essential to achieving a successful outcome.

4. Build, link and develop ideas together This is one way of demonstrating your flexibility. By listening to others’ ideas and identifying possible connections to your
40

own—or even adopting new ideas that support your goals and perspective—you can link, build and develop together. The best way of doing this is to mention the person’s name to show them that you are building and linking with them. For example: “I like John’s idea and I’d like to build on it by…”
5. Show your understanding It is important to establish common ground. This can also be regarded as the second stage to building and linking. Once you have made the link, you will need to demonstrate authenticity by regularly asking the other parties what their view is about things so far.
6. Check that understanding Having reached an appreciation of others’ point of view, you need to keep it. Check that people are still with you—they are moving along with you, and roughly in the same direction. Summarizing at regular points through the process—either verbally or in writing—will help ensure you are all aligned and, if not, will highlight any differing views. This will give you time to work through any problems that emerge.
7. Express yourself fluently Influencing involves both hard and soft skills. It is about emotion as well as facts. When you are involved in any influencing discussion, simply expressing the facts, data and research about a subject is not enough. You also have to show your feelings and emotions through your non-verbal behavior and body language. This demonstrates your credibility, authenticity and genuine understanding of others’ perspective.
8. Be enthusiastic Showing energy and enthusiasm about the issue or topic is one way of expressing yourself fluently.
9. Remember the unextinguished fire When you are influencing it is important to ensure that you are bringing everyone along with you—or at least recognizing those who are not aligned and why. If you are not aware, they will be like the smoldering ember remaining in the grate and could reignite doubts in others. Checking understanding regularly will help to avoid this happening.
10. Above all, plan and prepare
Fiona Dent is director of executive education at Ashridge Business School. She is co-author with Mike Brent of The leaders’ guide to influence: how to use soft skills to get hard results, published by FT Prentice Hall.
Lack of planning and preparation is probably the most frequently cited reason for influencing failure. And the usual excuse is time. My question is: do you have time not to plan and prepare? Think about who is involved, all the stakeholders, what’s in it for them, how will you influence them, what style, skills and processes will you use?

HOW TO PREPARE:
HOW TO PREPARE:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. 1. In a medium bowl, fold sour cream and prepared pudding mix into the whipped topping.
2. Dip eggplant slices in egg, then in bread crumbs. Place in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in preheated oven for 5 min. on each side; lower heat to 350.
2. Cut the cake into thirds, horizontally. 3. Line a large trifle or other glass serving bowl with kiwi and strawberry slices. Place one layer of cake in bottom of bowl, top with 1/3 of bananas and 1/3 of whipped topping mixture. Repeat layering until all ingredients are used.
3. In a 9x13 inch baking dish or oval roasting pan, spread spaghetti sauce to cover the bottom. Place a layer of eggplant slices in the sauce. Sprinkle with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, sliced peppers, cut beans and half of the mushrooms. Repeat with remaining ingredients, ending with the cheeses.

Marinated Mushrooms and Spicy Guacamole Submitted By Marie-Claire Hermans from Ravishing Raw
new year brings new intentions, new plans and new goals. It is very often related to not feeling comfortable with one’s weight, health issues or handling stress. After an inspired start though, most people tend to fall back into old patterns and frustrations. Eating more consciously and raw is the most guaranteed way to see and feel the difference. Making it a lifestyle instead of a diet is the key to achieving your goals successfully. Simply because raw food cleanses the body until it becomes a clean slate; with which you can create a whole new life. Any time is a good time to make the decision to take a healthy beginning. So, what about…now?
