Summer Raspberries

Greetings,

Written by Talia Henderson

R

aspberries are not just red! Most individuals are unaware that there are over two hundred different species of raspberries that come in four different colors: red, purple, gold or black. An ancient mythological tale from France helped originate the idea of the red raspberry. The nymph Ida, while picking white raspberries to help sooth the infant Zeus, scratched herself on a thorn and bled onto the white raspberries, instantly turning them red. Raspberries contain the potential anti-cancer agent, ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is a polyphenol antioxidant, instrumental in combating oxidative stress, a process associated with some neurodegenerative diseases and some cardiovascular diseases. They are also a rich source of vitamin C, potassium and foliate. Raspberries contain soluble fibers that may lower cholesterol levels and slow the release of carbohydrates into the blood stream for diabetics. Raspberries have no fat, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol or calories. They can help lower high blood pressure and have an anti-inflammatory property that may help to reduce inflammation of the joints. Raspberries are June bearing and ever bearing. June bearing produces a heavy crop of berries from June through early July. Ever bearing raspberries produce two crops, one in June and one in the fall (September through the first frost). Raspberries are a healthy, delicious addition to your diet!

I always feel renewed and accomplished after completing my annual hike to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. Yosemite is one of the most spectacular parks in North America and it is only 5 hours from Reno. This glacial park draws people from all over the globe; I met a family from the Czech Republic, a couple from France and many American’s from all over this great nation we call the United States of America. What does this quick jaunt to Yosemite have to do with health? Everything, the best therapy that anyone can do for their self is to get away from their daily routines and explore the quieter side of life… Nature. We continually read about the benefits of living a balanced life, every once in a while it is good to ask yourself, “are you working to live or living to work?” In this issue please find a variety of articles that offer a different approach or perspective in looking at issues that affect your physical and emotional wellbeing. Happy 4th of July from all of us at Healthy Beginnings Magazine. Dawn Gowery, Publisher/Editor

The good news is the U.S. Senate voted 84-11 Tuesday to consider a bill giving the FDA oversight of tobacco. This came a month after the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a similar measure. Under the measure, the FDA could restrict tobacco marketing - specifically to young people, order changes to the ingredients in tobacco products and require more prominent health warnings. Please contact the Governor and let him know that we don't want smoking indoors in Nevada: http://gov.state. nv.us/ContactX.htm

Monthly Health Outlook:

THE SUN IN

CANCER Written By Robert Ayres

ASTROLOGY&HEALTH

ASTROLOGICAL ALCHEMY ••• The Astrology of Self-Transformationsm

T

he Sun enters Cancer this month on June 20. This marks Summer Solstice. It is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Cancer is the first water sign of the zodiac and it rules the fluid state of life and light. For those of us here in the Sierras, it is time for maximum snow melt and water runoff. The water element is highly enlivened and energized. We also need to remember that our bodies are 70 to 80 percent water. Esoterically, water is the physical manifestation of the etheric dimension. This subtle, non-physical dimension is the source of vitality. Water is necessary for life as we know it to exist. Our etheric body interpenetrates our physical body and feeds it prana, or chi, directly from the life forces emanating from our Sun and the stars. The balanced flow of fluids throughout the body is the physical counterpart of this etheric energy. On another level Cancer, and its planetary ruler the Moon, rule the principle of soul. We are beings of body, soul and spirit. Soul is the intermediary between spirit and body. The primary principle of soul is love. The language of love is feeling and emotion. An emphasis on the water element in a person’s natal chart will manifest as strong feelings and emotional tendencies. It is important to understand that love, feelings and emotions are the expression of cosmic forces and powers. Love is the glue of the universe that holds together the infinite diversity of life.

July 2009

From a physiological standpoint, Cancer rules the stomach and the digestive system. The alimentary canal from the mouth to the anus is a very complex system to break down food and assimilate it into our bodies. The stomach is the primary center for this alchemical process but the liver, kidneys, spleen, intestines and other organs play their specialized roles and contribute to the metabolic process. It takes tremendous forces to break down outer nature (food) and transform it into energy for the body. The ultimate, most refined and precious result of these processes is the blood. Blood is a very special esoteric, spiritual fluid that we will examine in a future article. Cancer and the Moon also rule the breasts and the production of mother’s milk. Milk is one of the most important universal nutritional foods in creation. This is also a very special fluid for the manifestation and growth of life.

orn and raised in Reno, Nevada David Rovetti is definitely a native Nevadan. With five kids, David enjoys helping them and their teammates succeed in sports and while also being actively involved in provided chiropractic needs to the community. Before becoming a chiropractor, Dr. Rovetti’s interests were in mathematics. After having met a chiropractor and learning about the profession, David was impressed with what they could offer and soon after decided that a chiropractic career was right for him. More than 25 years later, he still experiences the rewards that the profession offers him. Dr. Rovetti refers to himself as a diversified chiropractor, integrating several techniques and tools into his practice. Some chiropractors only focus on the exact area of pain, while Dr. Rovetti, using structural manipulation, focuses on the entire body. Structural manipulation consists of manual therapies, thrusting techniques and full spine adjusting. Alongside manual techniques, Dr. Rovetti combines cold laser therapy into his practice. Cold laser therapy penetrates the cells and stimulates the mitochondria,

giving the cells a burst of healing energy. Dr. Rovetti always uses laser therapy prior to manipulation because it reduces inflammation and relaxes the muscles, making for an easier and longer lasting adjustment. Cold laser therapy is especially beneficial for sports performers. It increases the muscle mitochondrial activity, resulting in strengthened muscles. Dr. Rovetti notices that he treats many athletes of all ages. He witnesses first hand, the results of laser therapy while using the technique on his daughters and their fellow track teammates. He openly welcomes sports teams and athletes who are looking for overall enhanced performance. Another unique service that Dr. Rovetti offers is mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT). He decided to include this therapy in his practice because his son has Down syndrome. Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is used for any disease involving the brain. It provides oxygen to parts of the brain that our blood cannot, and also gets oxygen to the muscles and fluids of the body, such as cerebral spinal fluid. It works extremely well for people with autism and cerebral palsy. David has seen positive results on his own son and other cases in the community. Even though mHBOT is not approved by the FDA for many conditions, this therapy has significantly improved many peoples’ lives. However, the FDA has approved mHBOT to help with symptoms for the following 14 conditions: Air or Gas July 2009

Embolism, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, Gas Gangrene, Crush Injury, Decompression Sickness, Enhancement of Healing in selected Problem Wounds, Exceptional Anemia, Intracranial Abscess, Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections, Osteomyelitis, Delayed Radiation Injury, Skin Grafts and Flaps and Thermal Burns. Dr. Rovetti provides every patient with a disclaimer, and believes individuals have innate intuitions regarding the treatment their body will respond to. Dr. Rovetti is a unique chiropractor in that he integrates his practice with his personal life and continually sees the success of his modalities first hand. He sees men and women of all ages and treats his patients as he would want to be treated. Dr. Rovetti understands that people do not usually like to go to the chiropractor for long periods of time, because they are looking for an immediate release from pain, and he constantly thrives to achieve this. Dr. Rovetti has had great success with helping auto accident patients and patients who have not had success with other chiropractors. With laser therapy people can heal much faster. He enjoys working with all patients, and gets great joy out of working with sports teams and helping the community in anyway possible. Outside of work David enjoys camping, golfing, water skiing and spending time with his family. For more info, contact Dr. David Rovetti, Chiropractic Physician at (775) 324-3700.

BOOKREVIEW

The Cure for All Diseases With Many Case Histories By Hulda Clark, Ph.D., N.D.

A book review by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

D

r. Hulda Clark has been researching what causes chronic diseases for over 50 years, and has been thinking “outside the box” of conventional research for the last 30 years. As a result, she is of the opinion that all chronic diseases and conditions are caused by two things: parasites and pollution inside the human body. Parasites have been infecting humans for as long as we have been around. Ancient peoples used different concoctions of bark, herbs and roots to kill internal parasites. Certain plants, such

a s Wo r m w o o d , were even named for the killing effect they had on parasites. Today we in the West expect “miracle” drugs and surgeries to remedy every disease or condition. This is not working out too well, as the second most common cause of death in America is medical and pharmaceutical mistakes. Also, our bodies are polluted with toxins from our modern industrialized society, chemical toxins and poisons that ancient peoples never had to deal with. Dr. Clark’s extensive training in biology and cell physiology gave her the knowledge and confidence she needed in order to explore new avenues. Her medical training urged her to “search for the truth”, however the underlying message was “search for acceptance.” After she left government-funded research her freedom-based search for the truth began in earnest. She noticed fascinating “coincidences” that to her knowledge had never been researched. Clark learned that every liv-

ing thing has a vibrational frequency and that as you “zap” viruses, harmful bacteria and parasites with a certain frequency, they die. Your white cells can then gather them up and dispose of them. Dr. Clark learned that viruses, harmful bacteria and parasites can be killed quickly and easily. You can either buy or make your own “zapper” from instructions in the book or you can do the parasite cleanse she recommends, using only three ingredients. The liver cleanse she describes has been used by thousands of people around the world for decades, and she also gives the protocol for a kidney cleanse. She found that certain parasites and toxins target certain organs. The combination of parasites and toxins in an organ is a deadly duo, which can overwhelm the immune system. She also learned the four most common flukes (flatworms) in our bodies are: human intestinal fluke, human liver fluke, sheep liver fluke and pancreatic fluke of cattle. All these flatworms are found in humans. The most dangerous type of fluke (Fasciolopsis buskii) is found in every case of cancer, HIV infection, Alzheimer’s, Crohn’s disease, Kaposi’s and endometriosis. Any one of these four flukes can invade the muscles, causing dystrophies.

I have the upmost respect for Dr. Hulda Clark, she refused to patent her inventions so that anyone could construct them. Also, one has to greatly respect someone who would move to another country so that she could continue her research, and be free from harassment or intimidation. Wet Cleaning Written by Chang Suh

A

dry cleaning method called wet cleaning has been taking over the cleaning industry by storm. This cleaning process uses only water, all natural soaps, conditioners, computerized washers, and moisture controlled dryers to clean any garment that states, “dry clean only.” In other words no toxic chemicals such as PERC or hydrocarbon are used to clean your clothes, which leaves toxic chemical residue behind. The beauty of this process is that you will no longer breathe or smell it on your clothes. This is especially true for household items such as down comforters, blankets, rugs or drapes, which tend to retain more of the harmful solvents used in typical drycleaners. Customers sleep on or near these items, breathing in chemical residue nightly. Why should you be concerned about what solvent is used in the dry cleaning process? About 85 percent of all dry cleaners in the United States use a solvent called “PERC.” The EPA has classified PERC as a probable human carcinogen and the state of California has labeled it as a known agent to cause cancer. California has passed regulations to phase its usage out by 2023. It is currently against regulation to establish any new PERC dry cleaning facilities in the state of California. It is a great cleaning agent especially when cleaning greases and inks and was essentially a degreasing solvent, used to clean auto parts. But what it does not clean well are stains that are water-soluble. This is not good considering most of the stains procured by people are food, drink, dirt and sweat. Wet cleaning is the ideal cleaning process, ensuring your clothes come back smelling fresh and clean, as if you pulled them out of your washer at home. How does wet cleaning affect the environment? It affects the environment as much as your home washer. Usually, wet cleaning facilities use only soaps, conditioners, and spotting agents that have been approved by the EPA. Therefore, it is as harmless as the detergent you use at home. Wet cleaning does not produce any toxic waste or filters that require special use permits, nor are these green facilities subject to regular inspection by local and state agencies. The EPA considers wet cleaning

and CO2 cleaning as the only two methods that are environmentally friendly. PERC and hydrocarbon are not considered to be eco-friendly due to the toxic waste produced in the cleaning process. Washoe County closely monitors dry cleaning plants using these solvents. They are considering the future ban of PERC because of its contamination of the water supply. affron is a golden, aromatic spice obtained from the delicate red stigma of the Crocus sativus flower. Roughly 80,000 flowers must be harvested from this perennial to yield merely one pound of saffron. As a result, saffron fetches a lofty price of up to $2,000 per pound. Although long valued for its exotic aroma and warm, slightly-sweet flavor, saffron has a long history of traditional medicinal use, employed among other things as an aphrodisiac, energy-enhancer, digestive aid, cough suppressant, antidepressant and analgesic. As an anodyne and discutient, saffron was commonly added in combination with camphor to fine brandy, providing relief from intense pain. Modern research indicates saffron's potential as an anti-carcinogen, which includes chemicals that may reduce the occurrence of cancers. Crocin, the carotene responsible for the spice's golden color, is a potent antioxidant with the ability to trigger programmed cell death in several types of human cancer cells. This was confirmed by research in Mexico showing several of saffron's components to inhibit malignant human cells while having none of the same effect on normal cells. Instead, saffron stimulated benign cell formation, including that of lymphocytes.

Salt-Water (Saline) Pools

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

ry skin. Pruned fingers. Red, stinging eyes. These are not symptoms of a disease, but rather what will occur as a result of an increase in pool usage as summer approaches. The battle over using chlorine cleaning systems or salt systems to keep pools clean has been raging for over a decade. A glance at a few facts may help you decide which system is best for you. Salt water is more comfortable for swimmers, but don't be fooled into thinking that there is no chlorine in these pools. In a salt-water pool versus a chlorine pool, the level of chlorine needed is lower and the pH level can be a bit higher. That means the pool water does not cause burning, itching, dry skin or green hair. It also smells and tastes better. These pools are less expensive to maintain. A salt-water pool is a lot cheaper over time because you do not have to add chlorine tablets to the water. Instead, you just add salt. The salt water runs through an electrical system that

charges the salt and creates chlorine on its own. It is initially more expensive to maintain, but in only a few summers, it will pay for itself. It is, in general, less time consuming to maintain salt-water pools. They eat up less of your time because the control box, which charges the salt, regulating most of the water levels. Be aware that you'll still have to check the water for pH levels as well as calcium levels. Despite the pros on the side of salt-water pools, both salt water and chlorinated water are unhealthy for the environment. While salt water may be a bit safer, it can still cause soil and drinking water problems, as well as kill sensitive plants around the pool. On the plus side, a salt pool option is safer for pets and for your family. Chlorine often leads to breathing trouble in trained swimmers, regardless of past history of such problems, and the likelihood increases with the amount of chlorine used in the water. A study presented at the 51st Annual Meeting of

the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) showed an incidence rate of over 60 percent for Exercise Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB) after several minutes of swimming in water chlorinated at a concentration commonly found in home and public pools. Chlorine byproducts found in swimming pools are linked to higher incidences of asthma, lung damage, stillbirths, miscarriages and bladder cancer, according to credible research conducted in the U.S., Canada, Norway, Australia and Belgium. One researcher noted that 10-year-old children spending an average of 1.8 hours per week in an indoor swimming pool environment suffered lung damage she would expect to see in an adult smoker. Salt water is just one alternative to using chlorine to keep your pool clean. Be sure to discuss all the possibilities with a professional before installing a new system. Celebrate Your Independence Written by Dana Andersen, MFT

Q:

I am in my early 50’s and recently divorced. I am scared to be on my own and have become intensely self-conscious. I never dreamed I would find myself in this position. I am trying to go to the gym and lose a little weight, it is so hard. Everywhere I look it seems like I am being told I am not okay unless I’m super thin and young.

A:

Always remember these are the circumstances of your life right now but this is not who you are. You are a courageous person who is facing a challenge and you are not alone. Working out is good for you, not to confirm there is something wrong with you but to affirm that you are taking good care of your health. It is true, spending time in the grocery line looking at magazines reinforces the false belief that you are not okay. Any of us could stand in those lines reading and become self conscious. And in turn, those magazines sell. Knowing you are already the weight and age you are meant to be is the key. Many times, when I work with the powers of positive thought, someone will say, “well, that is a lie…I do need to lose weight, or I am in debt.” Terry Cole-Whittaker in Dare to Be Great writes “You are not lying, just accepting the ideal of what is possible and the fundamental truth about you….It does not work to keep thinking of your body as overweight.... Believing yourself to have a slender body will cause you to behave as a slender person….This ends the mystery of how to get where you want to be: be there first.” Remember the mind does not see what is on the outside. You tell it what to believe and the possibilities are infinite. July is about long days, barbecues, water fun and of course the holiday; celebrating our Independence. You have found yourself recently independent. When you start feeling insecure, celebrate your own freedom and what you can do with it. And when you are in the line at the grocery store, instead of perusing the magazines and their article titles look

at what is in your cart. These are the items that demonstrate how you are taking care of yourself. It is amazing how easy it is, it will transform your life. Killing Germs

Written by Frank Shallenberger, MD, HMD

A

new report from the Wall Street Journal emphasizes what many in the health field have been saying for years. Germs are our friends. They keep us healthy in many ways that we already know about, and in countless other ways that we have yet to discover. Sure they can cause infections, but that only happens when our immune systems are not working right to contain them and control their growth. This does not negate the fact that we need them to be healthy. The article discusses the newly discovered repercussions of using antibiotics to treat helicobacter infections. For those who have not heard, in 2005 the Nobel Prize for medicine went to two

researchers who discovered that stomach ulcers were caused by a bacteria by the name of helicobacter. For years doctors had been operating under the assumption that stress caused these ulcers. Today, instead of talking to patients about stress, doctors are prescribing antibiotics. But is this smart? I think not. Helicobacter, like essentially all other germs, is harmless in a healthy body. Studies have shown that more than 50 percent of the world’s population is infected with helicobacter. But clearly 50 percent of people do not suffer from ulcers. So what is the connection? The connection is that in order for germs to actually cause a problem the body must be out of balance. One of the most common conditions that throws the body out of balance is stress. Maybe doctors have been right all along, but there is more to the story than stress. It seems we may actually need helicobacter in order to be healthy. Recently, scientists have been looking at some of the side effects of treating helicobacter with antibiotics. And they are now discovering that "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature." It turns out that according to a new report published in the journal Gastroenterology, helicobacter is just one of many normal, healthy bacteria commonly found in the stomach. In most cases it is the most dominant bacteria and when it is killed off with antibiotics other diseases are often the result.

For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

According to Dr. Blaser, one of the authors of the new study, as antibiotic treatments eliminate helicobacter, they do so at the expense of the protection that helicobacter provides us. For example, children treated for helicobacter develop three times more asthma than those not treated. Rates of hay fever and allergies, such as eczema are also higher in people treated with antibiotics for helicobacter. There are other problems now being discovered in adults who have had their helicobacter eliminated with antibiotic therapy. They have an increased risk of developing gastric reflux disease and some forms of esophageal cancer. In another study Dr. Blaser and NYU epidemiologist Yu Chen analyzed the health records of 7,412 children collected by the National Center for Health Statistics. They published the results in 2008 in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. What they found was very telling. The children with the highest antibody levels to helicobacter, in other words the ones with the most helicobacter in their stomachs, were 59 percent less likely to have asthma than those with the lowest levels. They also were 40 percent to 60 percent less likely to have hay fever or rashes. Are the bacteria in our stomachs and intestines really that important? Think of this, the germs in our bodies outnumber our own cells ten to one. There are over 500 different species of bacteria in our

intestines alone; helicobacter is just one of them. Ponder this the next time you are considering taking an antibiotic. "They are not simply along for the ride. They are interacting with us," Stanford University Microbiologist David Relmen said. It is becoming increasingly apparent that we need these bacteria, including helicobacter, in order to maintain a healthy immune response. I will be telling you why in a future issue of Healthy Beginnings. Here is a very scary fact, according to a 2002 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, only 5 percent of those born in the United States during the 1990s still carry the full spectrum of these microbes, largely due to the indiscriminate use of antibiotics and anti-bacterial cleansers and soaps. Anti-bacterial products alone count for over 1 billion dollars in sales in the United States every year. What should we learn from all of this? First, do not take an antibiotic unless you have a serious infection. Remember, every time you take an antibiotic you are

killing off millions of healthy bacteria that may never return again, and your immune system may be permanently affected. Taking antibiotics for colds, flu's, acne, bronchitis, sinusitis, helicobacter and other non-life threatening infections is not necessary. I have yet to see any of these infections not controlled by natural therapies. Next, avoid using antibacterial soaps, cleansers, and mouthwashes. They may be more responsible for this problem than antibiotics, no one knows for sure. The drug companies have very successfully used the media to convince the population that bacteria are bad and must be killed at all costs even the cost of your health. Do not believe what you hear, there is absolutely no convincing evidence that the use of antibacterial cleansers and soaps do anything to prevent infections of any kind. In fact, there is growing proof that all they really accomplish is the creation of the super bacteria, such as MRSA. Lastly, make sure to take a hefty dose of a complete

pro-biotic at least once a week just to be sure. A good probiotic will contain a broad spectrum of the principle species of the healthy bacteria that your immune system needs. In addition, be sure to eat an abundance of vegetables. The fiber in vegetables is very conducive to the growth and maintenance of bacteria in the intestinal tract. References: 1. teeth, and they can leak, causing further decay. This process significantly breaks down your teeth, leading to fractures, root canals, tooth loss, and pain. What is more important, exposure to some of these metals, such as mercury, can have far-reaching negative health effects, so much so that when a conscientious dentist needs to remove damaged amalgam they use a dental-dam apparatus and strong suction to carry away these metals and protect the patient from these unnecessary contaminants. What is the solution? Today, as a patient, you clearly have a choice. You can ask if your dentist practices “adhesive dentistry,” or the dental procedures and techniques that use porcelain veneers or dentine-bonded crowns, rather than metal fillings, to repair the teeth. In adhesive dentistry, a tooth-colored composite material is used to repair chipped, cracked, fractured, worn, or broken teeth — even “off-color” teeth that have lost their enamel and appear a shade or two darker than their neighboring teeth. Adhesion, or the ability to adhere materials to tooth structure, has been studied extensively for over 50 years, and the science has advanced tremendously over the last decade, allowing treatment to be much more conservative and aesthetically pleasing. Studies show that approximately 40 percent of all teeth show signs of cracks

and fractures that are often asymptomatic, meaning that the patient does not realize he or she has a problem. All too often, these teeth are ground down unnecessarily, when adhesive dentistry options exist to not only repair the broken-down tooth but to strengthen and reconstruct it to original strength. Adhesive dentistry has several benefits, including functionality, aesthetic value, minimal invasion, tooth reinforcement, longevity (10-20+ years), and biocompatibility, which no other reconstructive process offers. If you or your child needs a metal dental filling replaced or repaired, ask your dentist about modern adhesive dentistry. Your smile and your health will both be better off.

Lymphatic Drainage Encourages Weight Loss

Written by James E. Pickens, M.D., F.A.C.S.

T

he vascular system includes arteries (red fluid i.e. oxygenated blood), veins (blue fluid i.e. without oxygen) and lymphatic, which are clear. The arterial systems have muscular pumps starting with the heart all the way to the arterioles and smooth muscle control of the diameter of blood vessels. The venous and lymphatic systems have control of the direction of fluid with valves, which always point toward the heart. The blood goes through the lungs and picks up oxygen to carry to all parts of the body. The blood then returns to the heart to be re-oxygenated through the venous and lymphatic systems. These systems do not have a pump, i.e. active muscular contracture, to bring it back to the heart. Therefore, it must depend on other measures to provide this pumping mechanism. In a normal situation, muscle contracture and protein pressure are the only things that the body provides to return the blood to the active pumping system. In the resting state, approximately 35 percent of the capillaries are active. The active state that might improve this situation the most is to get all the capillaries involved in “oxygenation/nutrient/ get rid of waste” process. The positive and negative pressures of lymphatic massage provide the vehicle for vasoconstriction and vasodilatation extremes that increases material output. Thus, lymphatic massage provides increased metabolism to the area being treated. As a result of the positive and negative pressure application extremes, histamine, a vasodilator, released from the mast cells, materializes in the skin turning red. This local phenomenon increases the result. Lymphatic massage increases metabolism at a local level, which promotes active congestion. These extremes of positive

and negative pressure cause changes in the adipose (fat) cell membrane permeability resulting in some fat cells being destroyed and injuring others. After the above is accomplished, the ultimate way of moving fluid out of an area is muscle contracture underneath the subcutaneous tissue stimulated by an external pump. This promotes vasodilatation that will activate the blood vessels and push it into the extra-cellular, i.e. interstitial (between cells area), to be pumped by external pressure into the lymphatic and venous system which then escapes from a passive state to become active at the heart. Then the kidneys, physical activity or involuntary energy expended by breathing, peristalsis (bowel activity), or heartbeat can eliminate the waste. What happens in an area of the body in a passive state, such as in congested cellulite, is that waste material builds up to a certain point so that the blood vessels become active in this area and attempt to move the waste out into an active process. What we are doing with lymphatic massage is not waiting for the waste material to build up to that extreme point when the body finally acts on it. The extremes of positive and negative pressure “wake” up the capillaries and say “let’s move this waste material out.” You tell the body to bring in fresh blood and nutrients. In this active state, the body brings in more oxygen to tissue that increase metabolism in an area that has been passive or resting waiting around for waste material to build up. We are helping the active state occur faster with mechanical and chemical measure. For more info, contact Kaleigh Richards of Sierra Body Contouring at (775) 233-0346.

CONSCIOUSHEALTH

HEART DISEASE : Is High Cholesterol The Problem? Written by Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD

W

e hear a lot these days about cholesterol and its relationship to heart disease. Based on the sheer volume of these messages, you would think that cholesterol is some sort of poison and the lower it is in your body, the better. However nothing could be further from the truth.

• Cerebrovascular disease and risk of stroke • Poor nerve conduction due to loss of myelin sheaths around nerves • Increased risk of cancer • Lowered immune system • Depression, aggressive behavior, chronic stress • Lower levels of healthy natural hormones

It helps to know a bit about the history of the research that originated this idea. This research took place in the middle of last century. Those of you who are old enough will recall the big commotion about egg eating and its relation to high levels of cholesterol.

Recent research points out that the real problem with cholesterol is not with elevated levels, but rather levels of oxidized cholesterol. In other words, oxidation is the problem.

It turns out that the studies this idea originated from did indeed find a link between egg yolks and heart disease. The problem with these studies is that they used powdered egg yolk, which has exceptionally different characteristics than whole, fresh egg yolk. For example, powdered egg yolk is highly oxidized. Recent research found elevated levels of highly oxidized free radicals as a definite contributing factor for heart disease. Consider the fact that many people with high cholesterol never have a heart attack. Add to that the fact that many heart attacks occur in people who have ‘normal’ cholesterol and you’ll start to see that there isn’t such a one-to-one connection as we’ve been led to think there is. In fact, too little cholesterol is at least as dangerous as too much. Here is a list of potential health problems resulting from excessively low cholesterol:

Oxidation in the body is similar to what happens when fats get rancid. Since cholesterol is a fat, it oxidizes (becomes rancid) when the body loses its ability to neutralize free radicals (reactive oxygen species). The result of uncontrolled oxidation in the body is accelerated aging, increased inflammation and greater likelihood of chronic problems such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s. The fact that oxidation is a bigger problem than high cholesterol is particularly good news because we know a lot about how to help reduce oxidation in the body. Here is a list of powerful antioxidant nutrients: • Vitamin E • Vitamin C • Alpha- and Beta-Carotene (found in mixed carotenoids) • Beta Glucan • Resveratrol • Selenium • Zinc

Foods that help reduce oxidation include: • Olive Oil • Garlic • Turmeric • Sesame Seeds • Blackberries • Blueberries • Pomegranates • Miso • Tempeh • Spirulina Additionally, you can reduce oxidation in your body by avoiding foods that are highly processed. This includes most bread, pasta, pasteurized juices, and concentrated sugars. By eating whole, fresh natural foods, you are giving your body the fuel it was designed to run on, while reducing the chance of future heart disease. References: 1. Living Between Two Worlds Dreams & the Afterlife (Part III) Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

W

hen we associate “reality” with physical matter and our own identity with our physical body, the concept of the soul and its immortality can be difficult to comprehend. The worldview of scientific materialism still strongly influences our collective thinking despite the fact that Einstein’s relativity theories and the development of quantum physics delivered materialism its deathblow more than 70 years ago. The materialistic viewpoint that the mind and spirit are merely byproducts of physical and chemical interactions is challenged by research showing that consciousness influences the properties of the things it observes. In other words, psyche and matter affect each other and seem to be complementary aspects of a more fundamental essence. An analogy that can be helpful in trying to understand the idea of the soul and its independence from the physical body is to compare the body to a radio. If you did not know that the music projected from a radio’s speakers originated from the transmission of radio waves at a station miles away, you would tend

to assume that the source of the music came solely from the radio itself. If the transmission of the radio waves was interrupted, as would occur if you entered a cave, you might examine the radio to determine if it was broken. From your perspective, the radio is a self-contained unit; what comes out is strictly a function of the electronic components inside of it. Of course, without an awareness of radio waves your assumptions about how a radio works are destined to be flawed. Likewise, some of the assumptions of traditional Western medicine–including much of mainstream psychiatry and psychology–may be erroneous through their similar reduction of the psyche to the neurological and physiological processes of the body. Modern physics, depth psychology, and parapsychological research increasingly point to the existence of a psycho-physical “fabric,” or substrate, at the foundation of the universe. In such a fabric, psyche and matter “flow” into and out of each other, with neither being fully defined by the other. In this article I examine the dreams, hallucinations, and visions of elderly people approaching death. The first example is that of an 82 year-old man

suffering from dementia with episodes of delirium. During one of his deliriums he experienced the following hallucinations and delusions: 1) robbers were trying to break into his home; 2) a man with a white hat stood beneath the streetlight outside his home; 3) people carrying suitcases had gathered in his home and were partying; 4) the Truckee River was flowing backwards. Given this man’s compromised medical condition, it is tempting to dismiss his reports as random and meaningless aberrations (as in, “pay no attention to him, he is crazy”). While it is likely that a disturbance of his normal metabolism (the usual cause of delirium) triggered an altered state of consciousness in this man, his experiences are, in my opinion, neither random nor meaningless. For example, it is sometimes said that, “death comes like a thief in the night.” The image of death as a robber, thief, or intruder is not uncommon in the dreams of the dying. Not only can death come when you least expect it, but it also steals life from people who–like this man– do not want to relinquish it. Some people are ready for death while others bolt their doors against it, and our attitudes towards death are mirrored in our dreams.

In her book, On Dreams and Death, Marie-Louis von Franz observes that death is sometimes symbolized in dreams and religious texts as both a celebration and a journey. The party with people carrying luggage is an expression of these themes. The implication would seem to be that the man may soon be taking a journey and that this is to be celebrated. The party may even symbolize a reunion of souls. Another fairly common near-death image is that of a messenger and guide to the “underworld.” Sometimes this will take the form of an angel, a deceased relative, or an animal, especially a dog. The man with the white hat may represent this man’s guide for, by his presence beneath the streetlamp, he has associated himself with light and consciousness. Finally, the intriguing image of the Truckee River flowing backwards probably symbolizes the return of the man’s life energy to its original source. The return, at death, to the place of one’s birth can symbolize rebirth and also a life that has come full circle. A 90 year-old woman in poor health, with symptoms of dementia and intermittent delirium, experienced the following dreams and delusions over a two month period: 1) she dreamed that her deceased brother was calling to her from across the ocean; he wanted her to join him; 2) her deceased mother, who visited her almost nightly in her dreams, was going to help her make an upside-down cake for a family reunion involving both living and deceased relatives; 3) she no longer recognized her husband and adamantly believed that they were in the process of getting a divorce. Jung viewed the ocean as a symbol of the collective unconscious, the vast reservoir of psychic experience through which we are all connected and from which we all draw life. The ocean can also be a symbol of the infinite, of an imposing boundary between two worlds, and of a final destination or resting place–as it is for the world’s great rivers. Clearly, the dreamer is being invited to make her journey to the other side. Her dream of the upside-down cake could be a refer-

ence by the unconscious to the inversion of her two worlds, for through her dreams, visions, and delusions she was actually spending more time in the spirit world than in this world. The theme of a reunion meal also suggests that spiritual nourishment flows both ways across the boundary of death. In fact, this woman was sometimes asked in her dreams to relay information from her deceased siblings to their living children. Her inability to recognize her husband as her husband and, on other occasions, her adamant belief that they were getting divorced exasperated him greatly. I believe that her disorientation and delusions reflected the fact that she no longer psychically occupied the world that she still physically occupied. In a very real sense she was going through a divorce–she was leaving her husband and this world behind. In the demented elderly, we see people who are being separated from the very objects and abilities that helped to define their identity in this world. We attribute their forgetfulness, disorientation, hallucinations and delusions to the progression of their illness, dementia. But what if dementia is the effect rather than cause of a person’s transition to another world and their “divorce” from this one? Perhaps this world, or their conscious approach to it, no longer nourishes the soul, and the deteriorating body is what’s left from “a house unattended.” Because this woman had some grasp of psychological concepts, and as she struggled to understand the rift between herself and her husband, I shared with her my

belief that she was caught between two worlds, this world and the one awaiting her. She displayed immediate recognition to this idea and stated that that was exactly what it felt like. We discussed how she would need to be able to keep both worlds in mind when she interacted with her husband and other people. In other words, a harmonious relationship with her husband–and her deceased relatives–required that she acknowledge the legitimacy of both worlds without confusing them. It is no small task to honor the inner world of the soul while we simultaneously negotiate the demands and hypnotizing effects of the outer world and society. To live between two worlds, speaking the language of each and bearing the tension of each, without turning our back on either is to live life with greater consciousness and congruence. I believe that this challenge is increasingly being asked of humanity in this day and age. It seems that when we don’t live our inner life consciously, we end up being possessed by it at the end of life unconsciously. References: 1. Mindell, Arnold. The Shaman’s Body. SUMMER PLANTING

Watering Wisdom Written by Leslie Lyles, MS and Holly Bromley, BS

T

he blazing hot days of summer are upon us. While daily temperatures soar and the humidity drops into the 20’s we suffer with dry skin and seek ways to stay well hydrated. We know that drinking plenty of water is essential to good health. Certainly Nevada can be a harsh climate to live in; and not just for us, but for the vegetation that graces our yards. If you look around at the native landscape, it is quite obvious that not many of the plants that grow in our yards are indigenous to our environment. Our landscape plants, like us, depend on plenty of water for good health and in our desert environment that water comes from an irrigation system.

disease and will ultimately not live as many years as they should. But how can you know if your plants are getting enough water? When new trees, shrubs and perennials are planted, the drip irrigation system is set up so that each plant has one or more emitters running from a halfinch water line. These emitters are calibrated to provide one or two gallons of water each per hour. Therefore, if a new tree has three 2-gallon emitters, then the tree is getting three gallons of water in a thirty minute irrigation cycle. If the irrigation clock is scheduled to come on twice a week, then the new tree is getting 6 gallons of water every week. For a newly planted tree, this is probably sufficient. After several years the landscape is maturing and everything has grown. Trees that once had small root systems located close to the trunk now have expanding

root systems that are radiating many feet from the trunk. The fine hair-like roots that are active in water and nutrient absorption are now out near or beyond the canopy of the tree (very few water absorbing roots are near the trunk.) Thus, the emitters should not be clustered around the trunk, if they are the amount of water the tree receives is woefully inadequate. It is essential that irrigation systems are updated periodically to keep up with the water needs of the growing landscape. Small perennials usually need little or no adjustment, but larger shrubs and trees are different. They need to have more emitters placed out farther from the trunks so that they are watered on all sides near the drip line where the absorbing roots are. The trick is to adjust the number of emitters so that when the system runs for a set time, each plant gets what it needs. Another factor to consider is how long to run the watering cycle for the drip system. Lawns need short repeated cycles to prevent run off. Drip systems, however, need to run for long periods to allow a large wetting zone around each emitter. It is far better to run drip irrigation once a week for three hours than three times a week for an hour. Also, the system should be adjusted throughout the growing season so that plants receive more water when it is hot and less during cool weather. The fact is, plants outgrow irrigation systems and your landscape may be struggling through the heat of summer. Unfortunately, trees and shrubs are very good at hiding the signs of stress until they are weakened enough to succumb to infection or infestation, and by then it is often difficult to return them to health. Applying enough water at the right place for the right amount of time can help ensure a beautiful, healthy landscape for years to come. References: 1. Costello, Lawrence R. et al., 2003. Finally, we integrate our new story, replacing the victim story we had in the first instance with the idea that ultimately, our life experiences have been for our highest good, even if we do not know what that might be. Are our new stories true? It does not matter. All that matters is that they are much better stories to hang out in, particularly if they lead us to living in a more positive, constructive, self-loving manner. Radical Self-Forgiveness does not relieve us of responsibility for our past actions, but it does enable us to move forward in life with a sense of freedom, joy and even gratitude for all our experiences.

The next step, collapsing the story, occurs when we entertain the possibility that all of our life experiences are purposeful, giving us the opportunity to grow and learn both humanly and spiritually. From this point, we attempt to rewrite or reframe our stories and to speculate about what the purpose of our stories might be. Perhaps our pain has taught us to be more compassionate or has created within us a desire to be of service to others. Perhaps we have developed courage we never knew we had. Maybe we have learned to be better communicators and to

Did you know that more chemicals enter the body through inhalation of steam while showering than from drinking water? A recent report in the American Journal of Public Health linked chlorine to significant increases in certain types of cancer and stated that “up to two-thirds of the harmful exposure was due to skin absorption and inhalation while showering. A warm shower opens the pores of the skin and allows a high rate of absorption of chlorine and other chemicals. The steam we inhale while showering can contain up to twenty times more chlorine and synthetic chemicals than tap water due to the fact that these chemicals vaporize at a lower temperature and at a much faster rate than does water. resh, glowing skin leaves a lasting first impression. We should cleanse it, hydrate it and try to improve it. The majority of us think of it as "only" skin, yet the skin is a powerful organ. Everything we put on our skin is absorbed and released into our blood stream, which is comparative to how medicinal patches work. Our skin is the greatest defender for our health. The skin is an essential part of our immune system with abundant neural connections and with connections to our organs. Skin care is much more than vanity; it is caring for our health. The body and mind connections are fascinating, emotion can be felt through our skin as nutrients are absorbed and information is exchanged to our brains and organs. Many of us have heard the common phrase “makes my flesh crawl,” this points to the powerful connection between mind and body. The skin is an endocrine organ, which produces Vitamin D for the body and for its own use services steroids and thyroid hormones. Our skin holds moisture in and keeps unwanted substances out. Filled with blood vessels, sweat and oil producing glands, sensitive nerve endings in our skin give us information about our surroundings. What a wondrous organ we wear everyday! This gives us a new perspective to the thought “only skin deep.” As we care for our skin the importance for using chemical, toxin and pesticide free products becomes more profound. Stone Crop is a natural healing and pigment-reducing plant. It has been integrated into a skin care line that moisturizers and gently decreases pigmentation such as freckles, sunspots and age spots. It is an all-natural antioxidant and anti-free radial lotion that is gentle enough to use on all skin types. Stone Crop deeply moisturizes and reduces the skin’s water loss, which is especially nice for our dry climate. It creates a radiant, uniform complexion for the body and helps to prevent the occurrence of new pigmentation spots. It also assists in cellular repair by supplying essential nutrients. Eminence, an organic, green company has puts nature to work utilizing Stone Crop as well as their Pear and Green Apple Masque. Ginseng is also an antiviral and is particularly valued for its revitalizing, regenerative, and immune-boosting qualities. Aloe Vera increases the availability of oxygen to the skin and thereby aids synthesis and strength of the skin tissues. Everything we put on our skin contributes to our health and well-being. Using organic, plant and fruit derived products on our skin is one way to help us on our journey to better health and awareness. An Unknown, Common Health Issue CELIAC DISEASE Written by Christine David, B.A. Nutrition Educator

“Let nothing which can be treated by diet be treated by other means.” -Maimonides

T

his quote is probably more relevant today than when it was written. Most diseases of modern civilization could be prevented or greatly improved by our food choices. The choice of which foods to eat and which not to eat is vitally important for the many people who have a surprisingly common disease that is treated by diet and diet alone.

Do you or someone you know have any of the following symptoms or health conditions?

Possible Symptoms: • Extremely dry skin • Recurring abdominal pain, bloating, or gas • Frequent diarrhea or constipation, or both • Bone or joint pain • Behavioral changes like irritability or depression • Fatigue, weakness, or lack of energy • Missed menstrual periods • Female and Male infertility • Spontaneous miscarriages • Unexplained or chronic anemia

• Vitamin deficiencies • Unexplained weight loss or gain • Pale, foul smelling stools • Failure to thrive in infants • Delayed growth or onset of puberty • Tooth discoloration or loss of enamel • Canker sores in the mouth

Associated Health Conditions: • Type 1 Diabetes • Thyroid Disease • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • Fibromyalgia • IBS • Eczema • Osteoporosis • Peripheral Neuropathy • Sjogren’s Syndrome • Dermatitis Herpetiformis It is likely that many of you will see yourselves as having some of these symptoms or conditions. For some people these symptoms can point to a little known and widely undiagnosed disease. Usually, people with this disease suffer for many years, going from doctor to doctor, hoping and trying to figure out what is “wrong” with them. This is a life altering and life threatening disease if left untreated. What misunderstood disease are we talking about?

Celiac Disease! Have you heard of it? Many people have not heard of it, but they probably should. Celiac Disease affects 1 out of 100 people, about 3 million Americans. It is nearly as common as Type 1 Diabetes and twice as common as Crohn’s Disease, Ulceric Colitis, and Cystic Fibrosis combined. Current estimates show that only about 3 percent of people with Celiac Disease have been diagnosed, leaving many people suffering with frustrating symptoms, complications and misdiagnoses. According to The Mayo Clinic, “Celiac disease is a digestive condition triggered by consumption of the protein gluten, which is found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and many other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. If you have celiac disease and eat foods containing gluten, an immune reaction occurs in your small intestine, causing damage to the surface of your small intestine and an inability to absorb certain nutrients. Eventually, the decreased absorption of nutrients (malabsorption) that occurs with celiac disease can cause vitamin deficiencies that deprive your brain, peripheral nervous system, bones, liver and other organs of vital nourishment. This can lead to other illnesses and stunted growth in children.”

If you suspect that you or someone you care about may have Celiac Disease they should continue to eat their usual diet until after the diagnosis is made. If a person stops eating foods with gluten before being tested, the test results may be negative even if Celiac Disease is present.

What can they eat? A celiac can eat any food that does not contain gluten and was not processed or cooked in a way where is has been contaminated by gluten. The typical celiac’s diet often contains a wider variety of foods and is more nutrient dense than the typical American diet.

I have walked both of those paths after being diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2006. In the coming months, I will be sharing my story and journey of living with this disease and finding my pathway towards health and wellbeing.

People who have Celiac Disease have higher than usual levels of certain autoantibodies in their blood so doctors will test for high levels of anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies (tTGA) or anti-endomysium antibodies (EMA). Sometimes these tests are inconclusive but if Celiac Disease is still suspected, there are further blood tests that can be done to help in the diagnosis.

Often, people diagnosed with Celiac Disease take one of two paths. One pathway is to see oneself as being deprived of the foods and social aspects of food that the “others” around are enjoying, and thus become a victim of their disease. The second pathway is to see all of the different options, new ways of doing things, discovering new tastes and being grateful for such a simple cure to their disease.

Once a person is diagnosed, treatments include making a change in the person’s diet to exclude all foods with gluten. Gluten is a common name for the proteins found in certain grains than are harmful to people with Celiac Disease. These harmful grains include any form of wheat (including kamut, einkorn, faro, spelt, semolina, and durum) as well as rye, barley, triticale, and regular oats (specially processed gluten free oats are tolerated by some people) must be eliminated from the celiac’s (a person with Celiac Disease) diet permanently.

Divorce As Deliverance Written by Terry Lowey, MFT

ivorce is a soul stretcher, one of those charged life events where the rubber meets the road. A benign divorce experience belies a sense of core inner passion, in much the same way that would be true if a couple were to go through the motions of getting married with an absence of feeling. In the words of therapist, author and speaker Steven Kalas, “Marriage vows bind us. Marriage is a mirror reflecting our life of ‘we’. And, if we have a shred of integrity and self-respect, if our words and promises mean anything at all, then there is no way to remove the mirror without injuring ourselves. Without tearing open some holes that will need healing. Not even if the divorce is the exact right thing to do.” The dynamics exchanged in a healthy divorce (yes, there are healthy divorces) are the same as those in healthy mar-

There are differences and areas of disagreement, of course, but they are undertaken without contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling or criticism. The ego’s demand to be superior and ‘right’ (which results in contempt) is supplanted with a compassionate regard for the other while at the same time being in one’s own truth and holding firm to boundaries. It does not require hatred of the other to relinquish them of your heart, that negative action is a sure-fire way to keep them front and center of your emotional self. The opposite of love is not hate; it is said to be indifference. Being that indifference is defined as apathy or lack of concern on any level, it would not seem to be a realistic response. Some people may feign indifference, but it is a good guess that in regard to someone they once felt strongly enough to marry there is a high probability of negative judgment, fondness, or well wishes at the very least. Again, neither a successful marriage nor a successful divorce is the fodder for emotional neutrality. There is a sort of magic in perception. We feel emotion not based on what is happening outside of us but rather from a cascade of messages sent from our brain into the rest of our being. It is our inter-

pretation of events that creates the emotion, whether conscious or subconscious. Divorce threatens imminent disintegration of well-being, in part, because the prohibitions against it tend to be potent and entrenched. To preserve social stability and even survival of the species, cultures and religions have incorporated rules to support permanence in marriage. This is both understandable and desirable as a guidepost to foster the nurturing and thriving of humans. However, consider that to declare the preservation of marriage as nothing short of a mandate and to label anything less as sub-standard may be a critical error in perception. There are marriages that vastly enhance and contribute to the flourishing of the human condition. There are marriages that are equally destructive and have an adverse and corrosive impact. It is rarely a small or easy task to decipher if the latter contains even the slightest glimmer of possibility of being transformed into the former. There are divorces that devastatingly diminish quality of life and there are those that can provide dramatic improvement in the same for all involved. There are innumerable shades of impact. The position taken here is not to advocate for or against divorce, it is for the right and privilege to be able to choose. Many if not most cultures allow for it,

often with instilled patriarchal values by those that benefit from them. For those who find themselves involved in or touched by divorce, all of the ingredients for personal transformation are now at your finger-tips. This is an opportunity that is virtually unparalleled to discover, uncover and heal significant facets of your life. Often times nothing short of a forced disintegration of the old has the velocity to compel and propel us to consider new ways of being. Usually very well concealed from our immediate point of view within every potential disaster are layers of insight that can add depth and far greater meaning and joy to our lives. Divorce is no exception. The power to heal can be bestowed through the gateway of pain. The wise old sage who said that whatever doesn’t kill us makes us strong was not whistlin’ dixi! In the words of Elizabeth Lesser, cofounder of Omega Institute focusing on health, wellness, spirituality and creativity, “But here’s the thing about marriages: Every one of them has a story that could end in divorce. That does not mean they all should. Nor does it mean that divorce will automatically raise the wreckage of the soul from the bottom of the sea…What matters is that we take the deadness of the soul seriously; that we pay attention to the contents of the heart; that we ask the hard question, and fearlessly face the hidden parts of the self.” The Swiss psychiatrist and founder of Analytical psychology Carl Jung, reminds us that what we do not bring into conscious awareness is destined to come to us as fate. Divorce does not automatically diminish our lives. How we choose to navigate through it and then to reconstruct our lives will determine whether we end up far better or far worse for the wear.

Healthy Solutions For You & Your Loved Ones

Business Survival Written by David Branby

I

was talking to my favorite yoga instructor this week about what constitutes healthy business in times like these, and her take on it mirrored my own belief: business is always hard. Not surprisingly, in times like these, business is really hard. So the first rule of healthy business today is to take good care of yourself. That means eating right — because stress releases cortisol in our bodies, which makes us crave carbohydrates and fat. It also means nurturing yourself with adequate exercise and fresh air. It means getting plenty of sleep, so you have the energy to stay optimistic when everything seems to be hammering you. You can also counter some of the “fight or flight” urges that stress and anxiety bring about by doing simple actions that send calming signals to your body: Driving in the slow lane instead of the fast lane. Repeating the mantra that you are not alone; everyone is feeling the pain of this weak economy. Count your blessings, because however pinched you feel, someone else is hurting even more. And caretaking every moment by being mindfully in it, because modern neuro science proves you think more clearly and make better decisions when you are in the moment. Having said all this, I’ll be the first to admit (and my employees will tell you, in five-part harmony, with feeling), that I am awful at managing stress. But the simple message is, I am trying, and that is my wish for you, too. Drink the chamomile tea, take a walk, say positive affirmations, commit a random act of kindness, do whatever it takes. We will climb out

of this recession and we will be stronger because of it. Speaking of being stronger businesswise, do not forget to market, market, market to let people know you are running your business. Everyone in business is keeping a close watch on spending, but consumers are still buying (they’re just watching their pennies, too) and they still need to know what you’ve got, what it can do for them and where to find it. So, do SEO, paid search and pay-per-click for your web site. Take advantage of historically low printing prices to re-do your brochures and sales collateral. And drive people to your web site, blog and social media sites by advertising. It is still the way brands are built, and a recent study shows that magazines have the highest sales per time-spent ratio in mass media these days. I am a big lover of magazines, for the content and for the ads, and I have a stack that I savor on the weekends with a cup of tea and my cat on my lap. I am inclined to think, and I know from my own experience, that when I am calm and leafing through a magazine, I spend more time really reading over the ads and collecting impressions that inform my buying decisions. Think about your own consumer behavior, calmly and serenely, and apply your intuitive knowledge of human behavior to your marketing behavior for healthy results. References: 1. LIFESTYLEMANAGEMENT

Let Me Assist You Written By Alicia Wright

B

enjamin Franklin once said "Lost time is never found again.” The Personal Concierge is born out of an ever-growing need for more free time. Today's hectic lifestyle places an ever-increasing demand on the limited number of hours in a day to accomplish what needs to be done. Personal Concierges are problem-solvers with the knowhow to get anything done from running errands, arranging a special function or occasion, to home and office organization. They provide hands-on assistance for those who are short on time and who have tasks or projects that must be done professionally and done on-time-every-time. Concierges are most commonly thought of as exclusive assistants for the rich and famous or as staff to an exclusive hotel or posh resort. This is a misconception; concierge services are no longer too expensive for the average person. Today’s concierge serves everyone from the single parent to the overworked professional who is in need of assistance or time-strapped and willing to pay for what is known as "lifestyle management." By contracting personal concierge services, one can devote their precious time to what really matters to them. The stress and guilt associated with getting something done vanishes and peace of mind is reclaimed. Outsourcing one's "to-do-list" or special project to a personal concierge is often more cost effective than taking time off from

work to do it yourself or paying overtime to staff. The value of a personal concierge is in their resourcefulness, organizational ability and disposition for multi-tasking. Personal Concierges are not nannies or housekeepers; yet they may help their clients locate these services. Unlike an exclusive personal assistant under contract to one client (24 hours a day – 7 days a week), a personal concierge has a number of clients and dedicates only a few hours a week to that client or project. Since every client has his or her own unique to-do-list, personal concierges offer a variety of specialized services. The touchstone used in the industry is that if the request is illegal or immoral, the concierge Will Not Oblige. Otherwise, most requests for services can be accommodated. If you find yourself too busy, stressed-out and overworked to "do it all" perhaps outsourcing your to-do-list is the answer. Recycle Food = Save $ Written by Craig Witt

R

e cy c l i n g f o o d waste can save you money! What you are currently putting down your garbage disposal is precisely what Red Wiggler worms, the worms that naturally degrade your food waste, crave for dinner. On average, each person in the US discards about 300 pounds of food-waste per year via their garbage disposal. Also, an unbelievable 700 gallons of fresh, drinkable water is used to flush food-waste through a garbage disposal per household per year. All of this discarded food could be diverted into the food source for a thriving composting worm farm called The Can O Worms™. According to the local 2000 Federal Census, Reno had a population of 180,480 people, dispersed in 73,904 households. If each household has an average of 2.4 people, that would equal to 720 pounds of food scraps and 1,680 gallons of drinking water that are feasibly wasted per household and sent to the landfill every year. Just think, all of that waste could have been consumed by worms and their by products used as fertilizer. For analytical purposes, if you were to take the 720 pounds of food scraps to the local Reno landfill for disposal you would pay their minimum charge of eight dollars and fifty cents per load. Since there are 73,904 households in Reno, that is 628,184 dollars that could be saved in landfill fees just by recycling those food-scraps with a Can O Worms™. We realize that the food scraps put into a garbage disposal are co-mingled with water and deposited into the Reno sewer system: however there is a fee for that service also. In 1881 Charles Darwin’s wrote his final book The Formation of Vegetable Mould, Through the action of worms, With Observations on Their Habitats. Darwin believed that earthworms alone were responsible for the rich uppermost layer of soil, in his day referred to as vegetable mould.

Got Worms?

“It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organized creatures,” Darwin stated. The worms that work in a composting bin are a special type of worm called red wigglers. They wiggle because they have light sensitive cells in their skin that make them uncomfortable in the light. This trait keeps them under the surface in their food source helping them do their job. They eat pathogens like E-Coli and Salmonella for dinner, sanitizing the compost while they eat. These worms also have special calciferous glands that make calcium more available for plant roots. An average Can O Worms™ will consume 300 to 400 pounds of food waste per year resulting in 100 to 150 pounds of vermicompost (nature’s best fertilizer!), worth one dollar per pound. Simultaneously, a concentrated organic liquid plant fertilizer is produced at a rate of 8 to 10 gallons per year. This concentrated liquid should be diluted with water at a 1:10 ratio before being sprayed on plants. Similar commercially produced pre- diluted products are retailing for 30 cents per ounce. That is over 3000 dollars in returns from valuable recycled soil and plant fertility products just by owning and feeding your own Can-O-Worms™ - that is a tremendous return! However, the ability to produce healthy nutritious organic food in your own back yard! NOW THAT IS PRICELESS! References: 1. FAMILYHEALTH

Summer Survival Kit Written by Mirit Sloves MSC, MFTI, EMDR

T

his month most school-age children in Nevada will begin two and a half months of carefree summer. This is good for them, but for working parents summer often means dealing with the stress of finding temporary childcare. For parents who stay at home there is suddenly a house full of kids who need to be entertained. With a creative family planning this summer can turn into a fun, memorable and inexpensive experience. Kids look forward to summer vacation often to experience new places, to meet new people and to expand their activities. Entering this new venture is a good opportunity to teach our children safety rules, not only to help them stay safe but to increase their self-confidence. Children need this to handle summer time emergencies.

Some of the safety suggestions include: • Children should be able to state their full name, street address including city and state, and the family phone number.

• Children should be taught to use the phone; to dial 911 and provide basic information in the event of an emergency. • Children should be told the names of the individuals you trust to accompany your child to any event or location in your absence. • Children should be instructed to never accept gifts from anyone unless a trusted individual approves the gift. One of the most important tools to enjoy this summer is to create a family business plan for summer. Many times we as parents work very hard to create a business plan related to our career but we neglect to create a business plan for the most important business of our lives; our children. In order to insure that our family business plan will be a successful one it is recommended that our children will take part in the process. The children’s participation will allow an opportunity for them to express their thoughts and wishes for the summer, and they most likely will follow the plan if they play an active part in creating it.

A family business plan has similar components to a traditional business plan. It will include a summer budget (a good tool to introduce our children to financing planning) and it will include jobs duties (which child is responsible for each chore and what it entails).

SUSTAINABILITY

Paper or Plastic?

NEITHER!

Written by Cherie Schneider, R.Ph.

R

emember when paper or plastic was the question at check out? At the time, plastic shopping bags were considered to be an innovative, inexpensive, earth-friendly alternative, as we were now “saving trees.” Initially considered to be the mark of the environmental fanatic, reusable shopping bags are now available everywhere, as individuals are realizing that plastic bags have their own environmental cost. Between 500 billion and one trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year, of which, only 1 percent are recycled. (Incidentally, it costs much more to recycle and process a plastic bag than it costs to simply make a new one). The rest end up in landfills, dumped into the oceans or blown about as litter. This environmental impact has prompted cities such as San Francisco and Oakland and some countries to heavily tax or ban their use altogether. How can the average family continue to reduce its landfill contributions after ditching the plastic grocery bags? Here are some simple, clever suggestions that are convenient enough to become part of a busy family's "green" routine.

Eliminate juice boxes and plastic water bottles. Each year, the average American consumes the contents of 168 plastic bottles. A family of four could easily spend in excess of one thousand dollars per year on bottled water. From a purely economical standpoint it makes sense to make the switch to reusable metal bottles, which in addition to water, can be used for juice or sport drinks.

Today, there are many companies making attractive metal water bottles. However, not all are created equal. Be willing to spend a few more dollars for a high quality bottle and you will be rewarded with years of use. Look for an aluminum bottle with a leach-free inner coating or food grade stainless steel. Reputable brands will use high quality lead-free paints or powder coated finishes. Some product lines have interchangeable lid systems that can grow with a child from the toddler sippy cup stage through elementary school and beyond.

Banish sandwich baggies. Opt for containers made specifically for sandwiches or other leftovers. A fun up-and-coming option is the tiffin. Originating in India, it consists of 2 or 3 interlocking stainless steel modules designed to hold a variety of foods, including liquid items. Many come with a carrying bag, allowing the addition of cold packs.

Buy in bulk and repackage. Several grocery stores offer snack items such as dried fruit, crackers and pretzels in bulk, often at a significant discount over the same items' prepackaged versions. Repackage in your own reusable containers, eliminating all those plastic wrappers and cardboard boxes. This strategy works great for cheese and seasonal fresh fruits and veggies as well.

Cloth napkins are not just for fancy restaurants anymore. Inexpensive cloth napkins eliminate a guaranteed source of garbage and work much more effectively than their paper counterparts, as they tend to be larger and more absorbent. Cheery kid-friendly options are becoming quite popular.

Don't want to send the family silver to school with little Susie? Choose bamboo instead. Bamboo is an extremely fast-growing, highly renewable resource. It grows without pesticides or fertilizers and requires no replanting. Utensils made from bamboo are highly durable and stain-resistant. These tips, in addition to promoting greener living, have personal economic and health benefits. They work for the entire family for day-to-day lunches or special summer picnics. Do not worry if you are not 100 percent waste free. Remember, everyone has their own personal “shade of green”, and every little change makes a difference. NATURALSOLUTIONS

Zap Mosquito’s

n the midst of summertime, along with enjoying the many activities that refresh and rejuvenate us, we are also conveniently reminded of the joyful presence of mosquitoes. With the late summer storms having increased our water supply, it is likely these beastly bugs will be especially frequent this year. The chemicals found in store-bought mosquito repellents have been linked to many side effects and are considered by some to be dangerous. This summer, be ready to remedy these mosquitoes the Healthy Beginnings Magazine way, in a natural and organic way. Supplied is a list of non-toxic options to make yourselves’ mosquito-free this summer. • The best method is to not give them homes. Get rid of outdoor clutter that contains or may contain stagnant water. • Cinnamon oil is a great-smelling, environmentally friendly pesticide that has the ability to kill mosquito larvae and act as a repellant according to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. • Plant marigolds, rosemary, tansy, basil, garlic and Thai lemon grass around your home, these are mosquito repellent plants/herbs. • Rub garlic clove; pinched to get the juice flowing, all over exposed skin. • Get a bat and a bat house. Bats can kill thousands of mosquitoes every night. • Use mosquito repellent candles that burn citronella or other essential oils.

Concoctions: • Use 10 ounces of rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, vodka or olive oil into an empty plastic spray bottle. Add 1 ounce of any of the following essential oils: castor, cedar, celery extract, clove, citronella, geranium, lemon eucalyptus, fennel, lavender, lemon grass, peppermint, rosemary, soybean, thyme or tea tree oil. Mix well and store in a spray bottle. • Use or grow Catnip. Use 2 cups of stemmed catnip and gently roll it with a rolling pin. Put it in a jar and cover with 3 cups of vinegar. Seal the jar and store for 2 weeks in a dark place. Shake jar daily. Filter liquid into a spray bottle and keep refrigerated. It is commonly thought that there are no fleas in northern Nevada. While there are very few problems with fleas associated with dogs and cats, there definitely are flea species found locally. Specifically, Washoe County has flea species hosted by ground burrowing rodents. Plague, which is transmitted primarily via the bite of infected fleas, is considered endemic (continually present in the environment at low levels) in Nevada.

F

Included are some ways to naturally deter your pets of fleas and ticks this summer: The first line of defense for a flea and tick free pet is a healthy pet, a pet that is fed as natural and as nutritiously as your pet budget can afford. Try to find cat and dog foods that are as natural as possible. Look for pet foods that have no animal byproducts, no rendered meat or chicken, no antibiotic-fed protein sources, no added growth hormones and no artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. If you can't afford pet foods that meet all of these requirements, try to satisfy most of them. Be aware that dogs and cats have different sensitivities to foods and essential oils; be sure to follow natural pest repellent advice carefully. Adding a clove or two of garlic

lea collars are often purchased for pets at the first sign of the first flea, or even as a prophylactic. The problem is they expose both people and pets to toxic vapors 24 hours a day. The substances the collars are imbued with may be absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Your pets may develop dermatitis on their necks from the collars. Cats are especially susceptible. Humans can also get rashes. In general, flea collars are not particularly helpful. They may kill a flea here and there in your pet's fur, but they will not touch the masses of fleas hiding in your carpet or yard. Also, flea collars are largely ineffective on large dogs since the vapors tend not to reach the tail, where fleas gather. Some alternatives to flea collars are flea sprays or flea bombs for use in the house (these can make people sick, though, so use with caution), or pyrethrin dusts for use on your pet. Pyrethrin dusts are not considered toxic, but they can cause rashes and allergic reactions. Pyrethrin dusts don't always kill fleas, but work for stunning them. The best way to use a dust is to stand your pet on newspaper while powdering him (you should wear gloves), comb the fleas onto the paper, then burn the whole thing.

to your dog's diet each week can be effective in repelling pests like ticks and fleas that feast on the blood of their hosts. The garlic actually makes the host's blood taste bad to the pest. Brewer's yeast appears to have a similar terrible taste for pests and can be given to dogs or cats. If you have time bake your own dog biscuits consisting of chicken broth, olive oil, cornmeal, brewers yeast and salt which are healthy and act as flea and tick deterrents. Another way to deter fleas and ticks is to spritz your dog with one part vinegar/one part water solution every few days. Try spraying your dog's brush, then groom your dog. Be careful to avoid the eye area. Use a flea comb to remove fleas from under your dog or cat's neck where fleas love to gather. You will see the black flea debris on your pet's fur. Try using flea and tick collars infused with natural herbs instead of using toxic chemicals on your pets this year. Earthfare sells Petguard collars for dogs and cats. The collars are infused with oil of pennyroyal, oil of eucalyptus, oil of citronella, oil of rosemary and a few others. When bathing your pet, use an all natural flea and tick shampoo or any mild soap and water. Be sure to wash your pet thoroughly under the neck and the belly where these pests love to feast and hide.

Be consistent about cleaning your pet's bedding and carpets in your home. Fleas reproduce in cycles, adult flea, eggs, larva, then back to adults, consistent cleaning destroys fleas in every stage of this cycle. Wash all petrelated items in hot, soapy water will kill fleas, larva, and eggs. Steam cleaning carpets effectively destroy any pests living there as well. Frequent vacuuming also removes these pests from your living areas. You need to dispose of the vacuum cleaner bag, however, or the fleas will hatch inside your vacuum. If your pet rests on a carpeted area of your home frequently, you may want to work some diatomaceous earth or powdered pyrethrum into that area of your carpet. The sharp edges of the diatomaceous earth actually pierce the tough outer coating of the fleas and cause them to dehydrate and die. References: 1. hen we think of traumatic events we usually think of horrific acts of violence, however, trauma is something we all experience at different levels. Regardless of whether these events are directly affecting you or if you are watching them happen to others, we are all impacted and shaped by trauma. Watching trauma happen to others is called vicarious trauma. For example, everyone who watched the events of 9-11

experienced vicarious trauma. Globally, vicarious trauma has been impacting human beings at unprecedented levels since the mid-20th century when media technologies began bringing live images of war into our daily lives. Vicarious trauma is a factor causing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to shift from being an individual pathology into a global social syndrome. Trauma can be defined as any event that happens to a person against their will that is perceived by them to be violence, which is what makes the word trauma so big. It encompasses obvious sources of violence that cause trauma like rape, child abuse, war, domestic violence, automobile accidents, or natural disasters such as hurricane Katrina. It also encompasses subtle sources of violence that cause trauma like losing sleep because the neighbor lets his dog bark all night, getting flipped off, or having a conversation interrupted by someone choosing to answer their cell phone. The levels of violence resulting in traumatic experience range from mild, to moderate, to severe. This spectrum helps illustrate the fact that traumatic experiences are not encapsulated events fixed in time. Each traumatic event remains an embodied, dynamic force that accumulates energy over time. Added to that dynamic, each traumatic event is cumulative. In other words, unresolved or repetitive mild level traumas become moderate level traumas, and unresolved or repetitive moderate level traumas become severe level traumas. The cumulative traumatic impact of this spectrum of violence is what makes

vicarious trauma such an insidious and pervasive problem in our global community. Human beings are hurt by experiencing secondary trauma because we are also hard-wired to feel compassion for others. That is why vicarious trauma is also known as compassion fatigue. But the most common name for vicarious trauma is burnout. The world community is currently overwhelmed with so many sources of severe level violence causing trauma (i.e. wars, disastrous weather, financial collapse) and our human services workers are burning out at epidemic rates. This means that those who work to help traumatized populations are becoming a traumatized population. Whether the sources of violence have been obvious, like war or criminal assault, or subtle, like discourteous behaviors in a relationship the results of trauma can be observed in addictions, depressions, failed intimacy, social isolation, suicide, unfulfilled potential, frustrated spirituality, sexual dysfunction, compulsive behaviors and chronic health problems. If you are feeling traumatized on any level, be good to yourself, seek a professional who specializes in trauma resolution. References: 1. Figley, C. R. (1995). EDITOR'S NOTES & RETRACTIONS: Health Alert Retraction for May 2009—Orijen Pet Foods In our May issue we ran a health alert notifying readers that seven cats have died in Australia after eating Origen Pet Food. After speaking with an Orijen Pet Food representative, we would like to clear up any misunderstanding. Twenty-seven cats in Australia have developed neurological disorders after eating Orijen cat food, seven of which have died. As a result, Orijen recalled their cat food in Australia in November 2008. Orijen believes these deaths are due

to the irradiation process the cat food was put through to prolong shelf life. Unbeknownst to them, irradiation is required by Australian law. According to Orijen, the company that performed the irradiation process did so at a higher gamma ray level than they originally said they would. The Australian shipment of Orijen pet food was the only Orijen product irradiated. Orijen pet food in the United States is not put through irradiation, nor is any other country’s shipment. Orijen said they would no longer be selling to any country that requires the irradiation process.

Instructions:

Staying Fit

1. find a rounded rock. 2. get stamps. 3. the stamps will be sticky, but just to make sure they stay on glue them on. 4. let dry, and enjoy your new paperweight!

A good way to stay fit, during the summer is to jump rope! I do it all the time, my mom just bought me a jump rope and I tried it out and it got me breathing like a horse after a long run! You could do it every day too, I jump at least once a week, but I should do it more often! Staying fit is very important and with school out we don't have gym anymore! But that does not mean you can't stay in shape! Also you could do jumping jacks or pushups or curl ups. I love doing curl ups, it helps strengthen your abs! Pushups help you get lots of muscles in your arms, and jumping jacks are a warm up that I like doing before I do pushups or curl ups! Keep your body active throughout the summer so you are ready to move into the next school year with lots of energy.

(Continued from page 7) The Sun in Cancer tends to put pressure on the digestive system, especially the stomach. If you were born with the Sun in Cancer or have your ascendant or important planets in this sign, you will tend to have a more sensitive stomach and digestive system. During this time there will be a tendency to overeat and partake of foods that are more difficult to digest. This is also a time when food allergies can become more aggravated. Be conscious about putting too much pressure on your metabolism. Some of the best remedies for digestive problems are peppermint, spearmint, and papaya. These are best taken in the form of teas. Having a nice cup of hot tea after meals can be soothing and healing. A good basic rule to follow is moderation in all things. From an outer perspective, Cancer rules nature. All the kingdoms and beings of nature are the objectified manifestation of soul or the Divine Mother. There is a direct correspondence between the human soul and outer nature. As we are told by the ancient mystery teachings, nature has been given to us to feed, nurture, and heal ourselves. The healing methodologies of past civilizations were based in a deep and profound understanding of nature. The world provides us with a vast cornucopia of healing remedies for every possible disease and cause of ill health. We are slowly reclaiming this knowledge and will be all the better for it. Some fundamental paradigms of what the human being is and what constitutes health have to change in order to come into right relationship with Cancer and nature. THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. 2009 All Rights Reserved, Robert Ayres Robert Ayres is an internationally known astrologer with over 40 years of experience. “I purchased a web back support fifteen years ago & loved it! But I left it at one of my temp jobs. I’ve tried several back support cushions since then & none of them have worked. The reason I like the web back support is that is doesn’t sink or reshape itself, it fits in any chair & it’s very portable. I was so happy to see this ad, I can’t believe I found you! I bought two, one for home & one for my job.” -Pat Olsen • Reno, NV
