he red, white and blue. The red, white and blue. Hat’s off to a grand old flag. The red, white and blue,” comes forth with a powerful belt as my twins sing it loud and proud, tandem style. Then, my little one joins in. What a glorious feeling to know that our schools are still offering a little prideful song to our children’s repertoire. Showing pride for one’s country is a good thing. In fact, even in our current state, putting forth a display of love for this land, and its people, might actually bring us closer to reality. Ultimately, if our country is at war, endures a political meltdown or financial crisis, we are still habitants of this land. We’re sort of in it together; for the long haul. Instead of focusing our energies on the negative aspects of our country, and how we all “think” it should be regulated, maybe we should become a little introspective? Find pride in who you are, and celebrate yourself. Find pride in where you live, and celebrate your choice to live here. We all know there is no perfect, and I’m not idealistic enough to pretend that our country is not facing a massive shift…although, I do believe security calms a turbulent mind; so maybe the pride I have for my country can help smooth the coming wrinkles of uncertainty? Join us this month in celebrating you and your freedom to choose. June Milligan’s article, “The future ain’t what it used to be. So Change your thinking and celebrate life,” tells us that no matter where we are going, positive thinking will be our guiding light. You’ll also find that Rev. Jack Elliott’s column sheds another poignant perspective on the celebration of life.

se fresh fruits, especially in red and blue, to festively accent your white dishes and table linens this month. They’ll add a certain spark to your 4th of July décor, while providing powerful nutrients your body needs. Blueberries, for instance, are jam-packed with anti-aging and anti-disease fighting properties. One cup of strawberries is an excellent source of Vitamin C, and provides loads of flavonoids, which are all defenders of good health. So, throw on your tablecloth, place your dishes on the table, and pile on the fruit! When you decorate with edible accessories like these, you can dress up your family celebrations, while celebrating freedom, and a healthier you!

We hope you have a happy 4th of July, and that your celebration comes from within. Pause. Breathe. & Be Well, Ffjorren Zolfahgar Editor & Content Director

Nordic Walking Comes To Reno

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a way of learning to become aware of whatever is happening in this moment. By developing this skill it is possible to begin to take charge of one’s own life by simply noticing what is happening in the mind and body while it is happening. • Stress, Anxiety or Panic Attacks • Work, Family, and Financial Stress • Sleep Problems

D

• Fatigue • Heart Disease

o you love to walk, hike and socialize? Then the Nordic Walking Group is for you! Walking with poles is a European fitness rage that has finally arrived in the USA. With roots in cross country skiing, Nordic Walking uses lightweight poles to engage your upper body while walking normally. By using the poles correctly when walking, you can increase your caloric burn by an average of 20 percent (up to 46 percent) over “just” walking. Your heart rate increases, and oxygen intake goes up as well. All of this benefit with no joint pain and no extra effort!

• Chronic Pain

If you are an avid walker or hiker, or just beginning a walking hobby, you are invited to attend an introductory session sponsored by Healthy Beginnings. Rick Deutsch is a certified American Nordic Walking Association Instructor. He visited from San Jose last summer to teach many of our readers. He is an avid outdoorsman and has written the only guidebook to hiking Yosemite’s Half Dome, having hiked it 31 times. He is also an active scuba diver, bicyclist and runner. Rick uses trekking poles religiously on his hikes at Yosemite, and introduced a Nordic Walking program onboard Crystal Cruises in 2009. He teaches Nordic Walking at Colleges, parks and companies. His enthusiastic and humorous style makes learning this activity fun and engaging.

• GI Distress

• Skin Disorder • Headaches • Fibromyalgia • High Blood Pressure • Asthma • Cancer

The class is 90 min and will begin at 10 am on Friday, August 10th. The group will meet at Sparks Marina. The fee is $25 and is limited to 10 people. LEKI Nordic Walking poles will be provided. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection. For more information and to sign up and pay via PayPal, contact Rick at ricky. deutsch@gmail.com or (408) 888-4752. Details will be provided.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

BRINGING BALANCE TO THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT WITH REIKI Written By Teresa Aramini

hink of life as a balancing scale. One side of the scale holds our day-to-day challenges--bills to pay, chores to tackle, traffic to maneuver, jobs to do, family matters to address. The other side holds those things that help us cope with the challenges.

What’s worse, often one stressor has a tendency to feed off another. For example, worries that arise from financial strain may lead to an argument among partners, resulting in stress on the relationship. Stress at work may lead to lack of sleep due

At certain points in life, the scales can tip. It may be a sudden crisis that has arisen, such as a health or financial issue, a serious injury that occurred, or a multitude of events that have built up over time.

In such moments, it’s important to acknowledge that the mind, body and spirit may be out of balance. One healthy and holistic way to tip the scales back in our favor is Reiki. Reiki is a non-invasive, non-manipulative technique used for stress reduction and relaxation. A Reiki practitioner, through gentle hand placements over various locations of the body, creates energy flow. Reiki facilitates the connection between the mind, body and spirit, creating a sense of overall wellness in the body. It’s safe for all ages, and can be use in conjunction with conventional medical treatments and medications. Clients remain fully clothed and can choose to have a light touch or no touch at all. According to Tanmaya Honervogt, Reiki Master-Teacher and author of “The Power of Reiki,” when one is relaxed, energized and joyful--all common effects of Reiki--there is a sense of balance. Conversely when one feels sluggish, strained,

Your Skin is Like a Sponge Submitted By Nature Rich

magine your typical day…you get up in the morning and brush your teeth with toothpaste. Then, you take a shower using shower gel or soap, shampoo and conditioner. After you’ve dried yourself off, you apply moisturizer to your skin, makeup to your face and perhaps some hair gel, mousse or hairspray. A spray of perfume or cologne, an application of deodorant and you’re ready for breakfast. What you’re probably not aware of is the phenomenal amount of toxins you’ve just absorbed into your body, within your first hour of waking. Even worse, it is likely that every single product you used contains toxic and carcinogenic elements--from your toothpaste to your deodorant.

It has been widely known for generations that what comes in contact with the skin is absorbed and enters the bloodstream quickly. Try it for yourself. Peel a clove of garlic and stand on it with a bare foot and see how soon you taste garlic.

Keep in mind that the skin is the body’s largest organ and it is very efficient at absorbing and transporting to the blood and cells, whatever it comes into contact with. Barbara Griggs, author of Green Pharmacy: The History and Evolution of Western Herbal Medicine, tells the story of healing via poultices applied to the skin. “This hot, aromatic poultice of stimulating and antiseptic herbs very probably did the trick--and reminds us that until only very recently, poultices and foot-baths were very common ways of applying and delivering medicine, not just because of their local heating or counter-irritant value, but because their virtues are absorbed through the skin. Mustard foot-baths–-piping hot--have always been a popular remedy for coughs, colds and ‘chestiness’ in my family--a folk-remedy of long standing which we have always found highly effective,” Barbara stated.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of synthetic chemical products used in personal care products, and they increase dramatically each year. Furthermore, the FDA is not investigating the ingredients in personal care products. The result is that manufacturers can put practically any chemicals they want into personal products, even if they are hazardous chemicals listed in the Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances(RTECS) database of toxicity, and even if they are considered a toxic waste chemical by the EPA. Some are known carcinogens and contribute to liver failure and nervous system disorders.

Ointments and creams are also commonly used to deliver relief through the skin and have been used for millennia. Conditions such as arthritis, fungus, numerous skin conditions, sore muscles and joints, and even angina, are treated with ointments and creams. Ointments today contain drugs that are rubbed into the skin. Because of the possibility of side effects and over dosage, very specific instructions guide the proper usage of these products. These instructions include what side effects may occur and the action to take if they do.

Today, doctors use skin patches to deliver medications through the skin and into the bloodstream without injections. The latest generation of this technology involves using a gel to rub on the skin and deliver the medication. These methods are revolutionizing the delivery of drugs for many purposes including pain relief, birth control and to stop smoking.

The solution is to protect yourself by learning the truth about these products and to switch to products made with safe and natural ingredients. References:

generally told that the cause was unknown and they were sent to a podiatrist who checked for tarsal tunnel, where the nerve is pinched in the ankle; or, they were sent to an orthopedist to determine if a low back stenosis was pinching a nerve in the feet.

Diabetes is certainly one of them, as is tarsal tunnel and lumbar stenosis. Many of our patients initially think it odd when we begin to investigate inflammatory processes, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), subtle autoimmune processes, food allergies, gut/digestive issues, heavy metals and much more. Yet in the Peripheral Neuropathies in Clinical Practices medical text by Herskovitz, all of these causes are listed, and more. In fact, it lists 65 different potential causes including conditions most practicing physicians think are unrelated, such as Lyme disease, celiac and Hashimoto’s.

Both are legitimate investigations, but in the end are uncommon causes of PN. In fact, they’re so uncommon they are not even listed as a cause of PN in Peripheral Neuropathy in Clinical Practice by Herskovitz S., literally “the standard” text on PN in the medical field. So with this failure of diagnosis on PN, most patients come to our offices with a “final” recommendation that “you’ll just have to live with it.” At that point, they are experimenting with longterm drug therapy (neuronton, lyrica, cymbalta, etc.), which of course isn’t working or they wouldn’t be in our office. Often times, they are also experiencing the understood effects of these aggressive, brain-depressing drugs.

Our clinical experience agrees with Herskovitz. What’s more, most of the common causes discovered with an orderly examination and history can be improved dramatically without drugs or surgeries by utilizing Functional Medicine and Functional Chiropractic Neurology techniques. Often times, improvement can be achieved in three to six months. References:

In a March 7, 2011 Time cover piece titled, “Understanding Pain,” which devotes a significant part of the article to PN, David Borsook of McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School says, “As a clinician, I’m frustrated, and I’m sure patients are too, because we do a very poor job in terms of providing relief for chronic pain.”

1. Herskovitz, S., et al. Peripheral Neuropathies in Clinical Practice. Part of the Contemporary Neurology Series. Oxford University Press, 2010. 2. Understanding Pain, Time Magazine, Vol 177, No 9, 2011 page 64-90

Yet PN patients of Functional Medicine and Functional Neurology doctors are getting various degrees of relief for the PN pain patients every day. What gives? There are at least 23 known causes of PN that can respond to conservative care.

BRINGING BALANCE TO THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT WITH REIKI Written By Teresa Aramini Continued from Page 7

to the mind being unable to disengage when the lights go out, resulting in lack of energy and focus the next day. When one is subjected to chronic stress and is unable to stop or relieve it, this can lead to physical symptoms or ailments like headaches, digestive issues, colds or physical discomfort, such as tightness in the neck and shoulders. With our fast paced lifestyles it’s easy to see how being out of balance can equate to being unwell. Fortunately, there are many options for bringing balance into our lives. Healthy eating, exercise, meditation, counseling and holistic therapies like Reiki are excellent options. “Tapestry of Healing” author Jeri Mills, M.D., Physician, and Reiki Master-Teacher, writes, “Seeking a complementary therapy like Reiki often gives a person a sense of empowerment by being involved in his or her own health.” Reiki allows the recipient the space to focus on how they feel in their body during a session. Reconnecting to how one feels is the first step to addressing imbalance. By creating a sense of calm in the body, Reiki gently illuminates mental, emotional and spiritual issues that may be at the root of chronic stress and disease, in a soothing way. In fact, in her book “Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide,” Reiki Master Pamela Miles tells us that one of the most commonly reported side effects of a Reiki treatment is a clear mind. How does this occur? Reiki brings the body into homeostasis or balance. Once in balance, healing occurs naturally in the body. Most of us are caught up in the day-to-day stressors, causing our bodies to be in near-constant “fight or flight” mode. Reiki clears those energetic pathways in the body, bringing a person into harmony. While the struggle to maintain a state of balance is constant, for many individuals, Reiki has proven to be that proverbial thumb on the scale, always there to nudge our lives back to center. Integrative Ophthalmology: Written By Michael Gerber MD, HMD

“I was going blind and now I can see”

t age 14, “HM” was about to apply eye makeup and looked into her mirror, only to realize that she couldn’t see. She went to an optometrist and when he examined her eyes, he turned pale and told her to get to the hospital immediately. It was then she had her first Kenalog (triamcinalone/corticosteroid) shots into her eyes.

multiple Kenalog shots in the eyes, with subsequent cataract formation, and laser surgery last summer for retinal detachment. In addition, her intraocular pressure (IOP) was very high, so she couldn’t see. She was also on a combination of eye drops for glaucoma. She had also been treated with prednisone (corticosteroid) on numerous occasions, with severe psychiatric side effects, along with body numbing. It also promoted about two urinary tract infections per month, which they treated with antibiotics.

Thus began a nine year saga of many conventional ophthalmologic interventions to treat her retinal tears (tearing of the back part of the eye), uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye), pars planitis, retinal scarring, macular edema (swelling on the rear part of the eye that records sight), synechia (gluing together of the front parts of the eye), glaucoma (elevated pressure in the eyes) and cataracts (scarring of the lens which impairs vision).

When she came into our clinic this spring, she had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and jaundice, with elevated liver function tests. At that point, her medications included Xibron drops, an NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) to reduce swelling, Durezol drops, a topical corticosteroid, Combigan drops, two medications to lower IOP and oral Voltarin.

Six weeks ago, she was still on four ophthalmic eye drops, plus Voltarin, and was told that she would need to take methotrexate (cancer drug) for the rest of her life to suppress her immune system, or she would soon be completely blind.

One week before coming to our clinic, she decided to become vegan and renounced junk food, fast food, sugar, gluten, dairy and began juicing. She was only on vitamin D supplementation. I began with our usual therapies and added Pleo muc eye drops, Mucor racemosis friesen, the famous endobiont (pleomorphic fungus that lives within all of us), which improves circulation and has many wonderful uses all over the body; as well as Wobenzymes, magnesium glycinate, thyroid, adrenal and progesterone support.

Pars Planitis Pars planitis (also called intermediate uveitis) is an inflammation of the uvea. The uvea is part of the choroid lining in the eye that contains the blood vessels; inflammation of the uvea causes white blood cells and other inflammatory exudate to enter the vitreous body and makes white blobs (snow balls) build up, which impair the vision and can lead to cataracts, severe inflammatory glaucoma, swelling of the macula, retinal atrophy and hemorrhage into the vitreous.

Two weeks later, she said her vision was normal and she had made many health improvements, and also lost 10 pounds. At that time, I added Rebas suppositories (these are Peyer’s patches the lymphoid bodies that surround the small and large intestine and help normalize the immune system) and Pleo fort. Both build up the “lawn,” or the intestinal lining.

“HM” HM was diagnosed with pars planitis at age 14. She has three ophthalmologists and a retinal specialist. She had her first vitrectomy at age 14, which is a procedure that removes the vitrous humor loaded with white cells and inflammatory exudates, and replaces it with saline (salt water). She has had

MSM…What is it, and why is it a good thing?

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

M

SM, or Methylsulfonylmethane, is an organic sulfur compound that has beneficial effects ranging from its use as a solvent to treating arthritis and hay fever. It is a source for biologically active sulfur. Sulfur is also available in onions, garlic, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, etc.), and in protein-containing foods including nuts, seeds, milk and eggs.

The claims for the health benefits of MSM stem from Robert Herschler, a biochemist who published a study in 1985. He said that MSM was useful in treating stress, mucous membrane inflammation, allergies and gastrointestinal conditions. Nuclear magnetic resonance studies have demonstrated that MSM is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. This is a demonstration of its use as a solvent.

The fact that it can act as a relatively biologically inert solvent means that it can be used orally or intravenously as a “vehicle,” or a “carrier,” to enhance the absorption of other substances or medicines that are administered along with it. Its effects are very similar to its close cousin; DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) has been around since the 1960’s, and has been used for its antiinflammatory action and pain relief.

Published clinical trials of MSM did not report any serious side effects, but there is no data on the effects of its long-term use in humans. References: 1. R.J.Herschler, “Dietary and pharmaceutical uses of Methsulfonylmethane and compositions comprising it”, U.S. Patent 4,514,421, April 30, 1985.

When DMSO is administered, the first thing the body does with it is turn it into MSM. The major drawback to giving someone DMSO is the odor! It causes strong body odor, similar to garlic or onions, which is due to the sulfur. The person themselves cannot smell it, but everyone else can. MSM causes no such odor.

2. Kim LS, Axelrod LJ, Howard P, Buratovich N, Waters RF, “Efficacy of methylsulfonylmethane in osteoarthritis pain of the knee”, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, 2006; 14(3):286-94

There is an FDA approved use for DMSO in humans. It is instilled into the bladder to treat a very frustrating condition called interstitial cystitis (chronic inflammation of the bladder). Since DMSO is metabolized to MSM in the body, it is the MSM that is doing the work.

ould fasting for two days a week prevent age-related brain shrinkage, heart disease, diabetes, and possibly even cancer? New research suggests that fasting triggers a variety of health-promoting hormonal and metabolic changes. Fasting - quantified as consuming somewhere between 500 and 800 calories in a day - has been shown to reduce: • Growth factor - a hormone linked with cancer and diabetes • “Bad” LDL cholesterol • Cholesterol • Inflammation levels

Overall, it also helps lessen damage from free radicals (dangerous molecules that cause damage in your body). Furthermore, according to the featured article in the Daily Maili: “Suddenly dropping your food intake dramatically...triggers protective processes in the brain...similar to the beneficial effect you get from exercise. This could help protect the brain against degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.” Intermittent Fasting: A Good Alternative to Constant Calorie Restriction While it’s long been known that restricting calories in certain animals can increase their lifespan by as much as 50 percent, more recent research suggests that sudden and intermittent calorie restriction appears to provide the same health benefits as constant calorie restriction. This is good news, as it may be easier to do for some people who cannot commit to chronically restrictive diet. The Daily Mail reports:

You need to cut your daily calories at least in half, but can go as low as 500-800 calories a day. The KEY to successful calorie restriction, however, lies in which calories you cut, which I will review in a moment. But first, let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of intermittent fasting. The Surprising Health Benefits of Calorie Restriction Interestingly, some of the mechanisms largely responsible for weight loss and diabetic control when fasting are also the ones responsible for the benefits to your brain. Research suggests that calorie restriction can protect brain cells and make them more resilient against stress. This protective effect is in part due to fasting’s effect on leptin and ghrelin; two hormones involved in appetite regulation. According to Professor Mattson, these hormones are also involved in the process of renewing brain cells--especially in the hippocampus--when you are not overweight. Your hippocampus is the area of your brain where most of your memory functions are located, and there’s a strong relationship between the size of your hippocampus and memory performance.

“Professor Mattson is one of the pioneers of research into fasting--a few years ago, he made a breakthrough when he found rats could get nearly all the benefits of calorie restriction if the scientists only cut back their calories every other day.

According to the featured article: “If you start putting on weight, levels of ghrelin drop and brain cell replacement slows. ‘The effect is particularly damaging in your 40s and 50s, for reasons that aren’t clear yet,’ he [Professor Mattson] says. ‘Obesity at that age is a marker for cognitive problems later.’ The good news is that this brain-cell damage can be reversed by the two-day fasting regime, although so far Professor Mattson has shown this only in rats. A human trial is starting soon. There is reason to think it should work.

On the next day the rats could eat as much as they liked and yet they showed the same benefits as rats on a low-calorie regimen all the time. Suddenly it looked as if humans could benefit from a form of calorie restriction regimen that, unlike daily restriction, is feasible to follow. Now results of other trials are revealing the benefits. In one study, reported last year in the International Journal of Obesity, a group of obese and overweight women was put on a diet of 1,500 calories a day while another group was put on a very low 500-calorie diet for two days, then 2,000 calories a day for the rest of the week. Both groups were eating a healthy Mediterranean-style diet. ‘

Continued on Page 44

We found that both lost about the same amount of weight and both saw a similar drop in biomarkers that increase your risk of cancer,’ says Dr Michelle Harvie, a dietitian at Manchester University who led the research. ‘The aim was to find which was the most effective and we found that the women in the fasting group actually had a bigger improvement in sensitivity to insulin.’ Improved insulin sensitivity means better control of blood sugar levels.” While I don’t generally promote calorie restriction, it is an important piece of the puzzle, and this type of intermittent fasting may be helpful for many--especially in light of the compelling research supporting calorie restriction. Remember, fasting does not mean abstaining from ALL food, but rather a dramatic reduction of calorie intake.

The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be Written By June Milligan, MEd., CCHt

I

abilities within themselves that they never knew existed. This new awareness will be sorely needed in the future, as events seem to continue to come at us faster and faster.

n this time of rapid change on every level, it’s really important for us to realize how and why we’re experiencing certain things in our lives. The old dusty ideas and habits of thinking no longer support us or provide answers that satisfy. Whether it’s about religion, politics, culture, science or economics, the forces of change are blowing through and scattering old ideas like leaves before the wind. We cannot afford to prolong our ignorance of how things really work, or we’re going to find ourselves left behind in a pile of old ideas and old strategies, whining and nursing our resentments about the fact that things aren’t the way they used to be.

In order to deal with massive change, we must leave our intellectual and spiritual childhood behind and realize who we really are, and therefore think accordingly. Those changed thoughts will change our reality, and increase our personal power exponentially. We are moving from the Information Age into the Intuition Age. By realizing that we are energetic beings, influencing our own lives through our thoughts every moment, we are becoming more “in tuned” to what is best for us in every area. The cultivation of intuition and insight at this time is just the next step in our mental, spiritual and emotional evolution.

We are being dragged, forced, pushed, cajoled, shocked and led into new situations that demand personal resources that we may not have yet developed. However, we’ve been told by many spiritual teachers for some time that we are powerful vibrational beings living on the leading edge of thought, creating our own reality. In the last few years, these concepts have become widely disseminated, and as a result, millions have tried them out. People have applied these new ideas to different aspects of their lives, trying to leave any dysfunctional programming from family or culture behind, and forging ahead using new ways of thinking. As a result, they’re discovering talents and

Understanding that we are vibrational beings living in a sea of vibration, and understanding that like attracts like, gives us a different perspective on why we’ve attracted what we’ve attracted into our lives regarding health, abundance, relationships and everything else. By looking at things through this new lens, we begin to make some sense out of past “happenings,” past events regarding ourselves, family and friends. We are now realizing that through our thoughts, we are “happening to ourselves.”

So how does this work? If our thoughts are so powerful, what happens when we think a thought? The most powerful spiritual information says that the vibrational frequency of our thoughts beam out into the surrounding “soup” of vibrational frequencies we live in, and attract back to us the essence, people, conditions and situations which match the thought. That same thought then gives us the emotions to match. Our emotions drive our words and actions, which go to make up our lives.

This is a do-it-yourself process. But like anything else, once you learn how, you have to practice it in order to do it quickly. By being consistent in doing these mind control techniques, you gain more personal power. And by consistently practicing mind-quieting activities like meditation, self-reflection or contemplation, we actually shift our energetic frequencies. Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith says, “Science research projects in the areas of electromagnetics and quantum physics are revealing what spiritual giants of all times and traditions have told us since the beginning of recorded history: we are luminous, energetic beings of creative intelligence, naturally equipped to become fully self-realized.”

Our beliefs are incredibly powerful. They almost always become a self-fulfilling prophecy. After all, a belief is just a thought you keep on thinking. If you think a thought, or hear someone state a “fact” often enough, you begin to believe it, whether it’s true or not. And every thought has its own vibrational frequency, like a radio signal. As that thought beams out into this energy soup we live in, which physicists call “the field of all probabilities,” it attracts back to us what we’re thinking about and believing. So we get what we focus on, whether we want it or not.

Since we have some incredibly effective built-in systems for soothing and healing ourselves, it makes sense to learn them and use them regularly as we move into the future. So celebrate yourself and your brilliant mind-body system. Celebrate your experiences, your loves, your adventures, even your failures. Appreciate yourself and those who love you, every single day. Focus on and talk about only what you want, rather than what you don’t want. And thereby participate in and attract to yourself the very best of everything. Celebrate Life!

The second thing that happens when we think a thought is that thought is immediately picked up by the subconscious mind, which can’t tell the difference between real and pretend. So our subconscious thinks that thing has “happened to us again today” and logs it in as an experience, even though it happened years ago or is just a fear of what may happen in the future. As a result, we get the emotions to match, which then drive our words and actions, which go to make up our lives.

References: 1. Beckwith, Michael Bernard. The Answer is You – Heart Sets and Mind Sets for Self Discovery. Agape Media International LLC. December, 2009.

The third thing that happens when we think a thought is the vibrational frequency of that thought floods all fifty trillion of our cells, causing that “pharmaceutical company” in our body to manufacture chemicals and hormones to match the thought. If the thought is positive or uplifting, our bodies manufacture endorphins, the pain killing hormone, and serotonin, the feelgood hormone. If the thought is fearful or negative, our bodies manufacture cortisol, the stress hormone. Cortisol was designed to be in our cells only a few moments, while we ran from the saber-tooth tiger. But it’s not socially acceptable nowadays to run screaming down the street when we get a little stressed. So that cortisol just sits in our cells, damaging them and compromising our immune system. The thought that caused all that chemical action then gives us the emotions to match, and what happens next?

Hypnosis Plus New Trauma Removal Method QUICKLY REMOVE Negative Emotions From ANY Scene or Memory THEN ADD SUGGESTIONS TO YOUR SUbCONSCIOUS MIND FOR NEw bEHAVIORS

Our emotions naturally drive our words and actions. So when we notice that we’re experiencing negative emotions, it’s our built-in warning system telling us we need to change our thoughts in order to feel better and to be healthy. That is the signal to “pivot” our thoughts to something positive that we want to experience. That pivoting of thought causes a whole different cascade of positive chemicals and positive energy in our bodies. Either way, our thoughts create our emotions, which drive our words and actions. So, become an observer, not only of yourself, but also of the people around you and you’ll see for yourself how this works.

“It was evident that Casey couldn’t learn his letters and numbers,” says his mom, Kim Gangwish. “By kindergarten, he only knew three letters, and he would sit on the ground and roll around during class, bumping into other kids. He said he had a traffic jam in his head.”

turned around two years ago when he received a weekend of intensive treatment of BIT. Mann says her son, Alex Mann, now 12, had been diagnosed with ADHD at age nine. He did not pay attention in class, didn’t do his homework and was day dreaming.

Casey’s teachers wanted to put him in special education; they said he disrupted the class and told Gangwish that they suspected Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). That suspicion sent Gangwish to a pediatrician who indeed diagnosed Casey with ADHD and prescribed a low daily dose of Ritalin, which presumably affects a self-control center in the brain. “Even though it was a very low dose, Casey seemed really zoned out on the Ritalin,” she recalls.

Teachers at the school insisted he be put on Ritalin. Mann says she didn’t want her son to be taking Ritalin for the rest of his life. She says after BIT treatment for eight hours one day, and two hours the next day, she took him off Ritalin “cold turkey.” Although she admits she hasn’t noticed much change at home--she says his behavior was always better at home than at school--his teachers never noticed that he was no longer on Ritalin and stopped calling her, she says. Alex went from a C-D student to a B student, she says.

ADHD is prevalent, characterized by impulsivity, distractibility and, in two thirds of those diagnosed, by hyperactivity. Dyslexia, another common disorder, can cause difficulties in speech and language development, and confusion in the way print is seen on the page.

“Not one person has since said, ‘Your child should be on Ritalin,’” Mann says. “The liberation from a lifelong label is a priceless gift. It allows the child to create life that is driven by their passion and not their arbitrary diagnosis.”

Gangwish’s search led her to Susan McCrossin, an applied physiologist in Boulder, Colo., who hypothesizes that kinesiology and acupressure can reintegrate critical connections in the corpus callosum, the band of fibers uniting the cerebral hemispheres of the brain. The fibers can be blocked or can dysfunction, causing learning difficulties. After nine sessions with McCrossin, Casey was able to focus in class and learn to read, spell and perform at grade level. His mom took him off the Ritalin.

McCrossin’s brain integration technique is one of a growing number of natural treatment options parents of children with learning disorders can consider. Casey’s story underscores the potential for new treatments, such as McCrossin’s brain integration technique, as well as diet modification, behavior modification and nutritional supplements, which may effectively get to the root of the learning disorder without using Ritalin. The method, called the Brain Integration Technique, is based in part on acupressure--a 5,000-year-old Japanese method similar to acupuncture, but without the needles, and designed to increase blood flow and restore body functions, including the brain. McCrossin developed BIT in 1989 with her ex-husband, Charles T. Krebs. Brain Integration incorporates applied physiology, a form of kinesiology that enables the Practitioner to access and change specific body functions. Learning disabilities are usually caused by “software glitches,” meaning they are caused by biochemical problems that affect the flow of information in the brain, not brain damage. The BIT Practitioner performs “muscle testing” to determine which brain areas are malfunctioning. The Practitioner then treats the affected areas of the brain, through holding and releasing acupressure points. Those points correlate to a specific brain region, according to Eastern medicine. Why Retirement Can Be an Excellent Time to Learn to Play an Instrument For example, a 21-year study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx followed 469 seniors between the ages of 75 and 85 who did not have dementia at beginning of the study. The results, which were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2003, demonstrated a strong association between cognitively challenging leisure activities, including playing a musical instrument, and a decreased risk of developing dementia. Another study, conducted in an Illinois retirement home, revealed that seniors, ranging in age from their late 70s to early 90s, saw a 50 to 70 percent improvement in their memory after just 16 weeks of learning a new musical instrument. It is believed that the processes involved in playing a musical instrument may provide the cognitive exercise the brain needs to protect itself against memory loss. Physical Benefits: Physical health and playing an instrument also seem to go hand in hand. Research by Dr. Frank Wilson of the University Of California School Of Medicine in San Francisco found that learning to play a musical instrument, besides bettering concentration and memory, also enhanced physical abilities such as coordination and even the improvement of eyesight and hearing. Another study, the Music Making and Wellness Project, documented that seniors given keyboard lessons had a 90 percent increase in their levels of human growth hormone (hGH), a chemical important in slowing such aging factors as osteoporosis, wrinkling and aches and pains.

Submitted By Tahoe Piano Lessons

Mental Health Benefits: Learning to play music can help seniors beat the blues, too. The Music Making and Wellness Project also discovered that the seniors who learned to play the keyboard reported decreased depression, lessened anxiety and lowered loneliness levels. In 2005, a research study led by Dr. Barry Bittman found that playing a musical instrument reduced stress more than other relaxing activities such as reading the newspaper.

T

hink you are too old to learn to play a musical instrument? Think again! If you have always dreamed of making sweet melodies on the piano, or penning your passions into songs, retirement can be the ideal time to learn how.

We live in uncertain times and many people are carrying heavy stress burdens. Playing a musical instrument can help you refocus on the sublime and feel transported to a more tranquil place.

Not only do seniors have more time and often more appreciation for musical studies, but research shows that learning and playing an instrument in your golden years can yield bountiful benefits. The therapeutic value of musical training includes a boost in brain functionality, a strengthening of the immune system, and an increase in positive thinking--not to mention that learning to play an instrument can be a lot of fun.

Other Advantages of Musical Studies by Seniors: Learning music can help with memory retention, and adds to your physical and emotional well-being, but learning an instrument in your senior years has other pluses as well. These include allowing you to express yourself spiritually and creatively, and even introducing you to new friendships as you pursue your love of music. Finally, but perhaps most importantly, you can enrich the lives of your grandchildren and others around you through the gift of music.

Memory Enhancement: Musical study can play an important role in helping seniors keep a sharp mind. Research links playing an instrument to the stimulation of areas of the brain involved with memory, which may have implications in preventing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Getting Started: Find an instructor who has experience teaching older adults who are beginners. Also, look for a music instructor who is a professional musician with a good reputation in the community. Affordability is also a consideration, and whether the instructor is willing to travel to you, as some seniors feel more at ease learning in the comfort of their own home. It is important to find an instructor with a friendly, uplifting personality. You need someone who is patient, encouraging and who has vision so that your music lesson becomes one of the highlights of your week, rather than something you dread. You will remain enthusiastic about practicing and you will be less likely to quit if you have a music instructor who views your learning an instrument as a retiree as an exciting new journey in your life. Do not feel intimidated to pick up the phone and schedule that first lesson. Weeks from now, when you are learning to play and reaping the benefits of music instruction, you will be glad you did not let fear of the unknown stop you. Why is learning music so good for us? Well, learning to play and read music is like learning a new language--it requires abstract thinking as well as hand-eye coordination. It challenges us cognitively and physically. It is an outlet for us to express ourselves emotionally. And, yes, don’t forget that learning to make beautiful music can be a source of great enjoyment in your golden years, not just for you, but for those who listen to you play. References: 1. SPIRITUALHEALTH

Going On . . . Alone

“Going Within” Written By Rev. Jack R. Elliott,

I

Author and Spiritual Life Coach

was asked to officiate at a funeral a few weeks ago; and when I arrived to meet with the family and perform the service, I was shocked. No one came.

And the opposite is also true. We’ve all heard stories of ungrateful children--heartless, avaricious, neglectful, even cruel children--more concerned about their inheritance than the well-being of their parents. I remember something Shakespeare wrote, and I will paraphrase “. . .adult children do their best to satisfy parents who will never, ever feel they’re getting their due, who seem to want back a chunk of the youth they spent on raising their offspring, youth the next generation is squandering so carelessly. Having kids is manifestly not a reliable “hedge” against isolation, mostly because the kind of person who has kids to protect him or herself from loneliness tends eventually to drive those children away.”

No children, no family, no caregivers, no friends of the deceased. It was just me and the mortician. In my twenty-five plus years as a minister, I thought I had prepared myself for anything. In fact, I thought that I had seen it all--especially when it comes to funerals. I’ve dealt with squabbling siblings, infant deaths, gang funerals, funerals of children shunned by the families and the church; but never a funeral where it was just me and the deceased.

So what is the lesson we are to learn from this? Is such isolation always the reality? If so, how do we prepare ourselves to die alone?

The mortician asked that I pray over the deceased as his coffin was closing. As I began, I could not help but notice the contentment that seemed to be on the deceased man’s face. It was as if he was perfectly okay with his solitude. Was this the lesson I was to take away from this experience? In the end, aren’t we all “alone”? Don’t we all have to be content with ourselves and our choices?

I’m not sure how I’ll feel at 79 or 89, but as I approach my 59th birthday this month, I do know this--I want to be as independent, and non-dependent as possible. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned lot about “me” and the life I’ve lived, and I’m fairly pleased with it all.

Many of times I’ve had to comfort a grieving adult child, assuring them that the only reason why so few of their parent’s friends were in attendance was because many of their parent’s friends have already died. They had visions of hundreds of folks paying their respects and honoring their parents, but only a few of their parent’s friends were still around.

I’ve learned a lot. Some of it is just “stuff,” movie trivia, stories to laugh about and to write about, not to mention I’ve picked up a pretty good sense of why most people act the way they do.

I’ve also acquired a sense of how all that stuff fits together, and how to figure out the parts of it that matter and, even more important, the parts that don’t. As I’ve mentioned before, my mentor Terry Cole-Whittaker wrote a book titled “What You Think About Me Is None of My Business,” and I’ve been grateful to her ever since. Those words ring out in my mind every time some one judges me, wrongfully accuses me of something, or doesn’t forgive me for making an honest “human” mistake. It’s a moniker that allowed me to be more open-minded, more tolerant of ordinary human folly and more willing to understand that some people can be blissfully content in circumstances that absolutely contradict my personal ethics and values. This, I think, makes me a better Spiritual Life Coach, minister, business associate, friend and companion to others, and I know it’s made me a better companion to myself. Yes, I’ll admit it: sometimes I’ve fantasized about what my friends, partners, and colleagues might say at my memorial. But then again, there was never a gift given, a promise made, a commitment honored, or a friendship offered with that in mind. If we could all accept that in this world and this life, the only thing permanent, the only thing guaranteed, is our time with our self; and, we need to make the most of it. Situations evolve, circumstances change, people come and go--but we are always there. It’s like the saying, “No matter where you go, there you are.” I know this for sure, I want to die completely worn out. I want to savor each and every experience the Creator has planned for me, and I want to exhaust each and every conversation possible, and each and every experience afforded me in this life. And I’m willing to do it alone. I’m not willing to wait for anyone to live my life. Join me along the path if you like--that would be a blast--but if not, then I’m going on. You know, I bet that’s why my deceased friend had such a look of contentment. He’d done it! He’d lived life fully, and when his time came, he waited for no one--he just transitioned onto whatever’s next. Join Rev. Don’t Buy the Hype! ability to learn and remember information. What’s interesting is that the study also revealed that daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids helps to minimize the damage. Even so, the damage is only minimized, not avoided, and none of the above beverages are fortified with Omega 3’s (yet).

atorade, Powerade and Vitamin Water...What do these beverages have in common? All are marketed to consumers on the premise that these beverages are somehow energizing, hydrating, and in the case of Vitamin Water, able to improve your health. They are said to enhance athletic performance, and prevent muscle cramping and dehydration. One of the reasons the makers of these beverage products claim they are so great is because they contain electrolytes, or are fortified with vitamins. Can the health claims made by these products’ makers be backed up by facts? Let’s look a little closer at the ingredient lists:

The only benefit one might receive from the B-vitamins in one of these beverages will be minimal, compared to the havoc that corn syrup wreaks on the entire system. Some of these drinks are laden with artificial colors and food additives; which have been implicated in all sorts of health issues including allergies, ADHD and autism.

Gatorade: filtered water, bromated vegetable Oil, sucralose, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, natural flavors, salt, sodium citrate, monopotassium phosphate, glycerol ester of wood rosin, artificial colors

There are many healthy and cost effective alternatives to wasting your money and risking your health on chemical laden sugary drinks. An easy Do-It-Yourself sports drink can be made by adding a fresh citrus juice of your choice (lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, or try a combination) to a glass of water, with a little pinch of salt, and if desired, a small teaspoon of stevia, honey, maple syrup, or other natural sweetener. Young coconut water is another good alternative. It is packed with naturally occurring electrolytes, especially magnesium and calcium, which help prevent fatigue and muscle cramping. You’ll get the most benefit drinking from a fresh coconut versus a canned product, but either is much healthier than an overhyped sports drink.

Powerade: Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Salt, Potassium citrate, Phenylalanine, sucralose, sodium citrate, malic acid, potassium phosphate, artificial flavor, artificial color, vitamin B6, vitamin B2 Vitamin Water: Vapor distilled/deionized water, crystalline fructose, citric acid, vegetable juice (color), natural flavor, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), natural flavor, vtiamin E acetate, magnesium lactate (electrolyte), calcium lactate (electrolyte), zinc picollinate, monopotassium phosphate (electrolyte), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine hydrocholoride (B6), cyanocobalamine (B12)

What do all of these beverages have in common? High sugar content. Even the vitamin water contains crystalline fructose, just another fancy name for heavily processed sugar. Perhaps the thinking is that vitamins and minerals somehow cancel out the numerous negative effects of consuming sugar?

andwriting is the graphic expression of your personality. The lower case t reveals more about you than any other letter of the alphabet. Its two components, the stem and crossing, speak about how and what you think. You might call it “The Terrific Talking t.” The t crossing alone shows a wealth of personality traits, including the writer’s goal and confidence levels. The following are some of these revelations. In the copybook letter, the upstroke is retraced by the downstroke. The crossing is 2/3 of the way up the stem and of equal length on each side. This writer has enthusiasm and is competitive, with average goal levels. A high crossing denotes a good self-image with much expected from oneself because the goals are higher. This writer has long-range plans and works for what is wanted. When the crossing is higher than the stem, the person has very high goals and thus can be a frustrated idealist or daydreamer. A crossing only as high as the middle case letters denotes a person tied up with day -to-day living. A crossing only on the left side of the stem reveals a procrastinator with poor time management. Right side only crossing indicates the writer is quick to react to things that displease.

An extra long crossing is significant just once. It shows the high energy level of an enthusiastic writer. In contrast, the shorter the crossing, the less energy the person has. The flourishing t crosser can be artistic, can be fun if also talented, and can be an attention seeker. This is the efficiency cross usually at the end of a word. It is written by the self-starter who needs no orders to get going. This person is usually intelligent and great to have on the job. These people lack self confidence, require pep talks to keep going, and may need coffee or colas to keep their energy high. When the crossing begins the next letter, the writer has executive and organizational abilities. Having revealed various handwriting letter t crossings, we can move on to the letter’s stem formations. A person may use more than one form of the letter t, thus revealing even more personality information. Remember that the copybook t has its upstroke retraced by the downstroke. The crossing is 2/3 of the way up the stem and of equal length on both sides of it. This writer is enthusiastic, has normal goals, and is in control. A looped stem displays the writer’s stress and anxiety with the immediate environment. This person gets their feelings hurt easily--the broader the space within the loop, the more easily offense is taken. The figure 8 stem is formed by a person with great dedication to someone or something, perhaps even to the point of being fanatical. In relation to this someone or

something, the writer is so devoted that he/she doesn’t even care if being paid is involved. Therefore, these people are good volunteers for the right cause. Space between the upstroke and downstroke means this person has only one speed which is slow. This could be a master craftsman who does meticulous detail work, or an elderly person who is in no rush. A straight down ending (below the baseline upon which the writing sits) shows the writer can be sarcastic. No lead-in stroke shows efficiency, the person who can distinguish between the important and the irrelevant. This person does not like long phone calls or stories. When the t stem is shorter than the other upper loops (as in the b, d, f, k and l) the person is very independent, doesn’t want to owe anything to anyone, and does not want to be repaid for something they do for you. This “th” combination written next to each other with the t stem shorter than the h stem, means the writer has a specialty wherein they believe themselves to be quite competent, and therefore dislike to be challenged in that area.

By having a Healthier Nervous System which controls everything; by making sure your brain and body’s communication systems are working at their optimum.

A tent or teepee formation between the upstroke and downstroke and pointed at the top reveals a very stubborn person set in their ways.

Our 9-year old daughter was told... she needed jaw surgery, and after seeing Dr. Jensen, the same doctors can’t find the problem...Dr. Jensen and his painless “Pro-Vision” is our 1st and highest recommendation for anyone dealing with physical pain... Thanks a million from the Spanial Family.”

Just as the letter t is but one member of the alphabet, the characteristics it divulges are only part of the whole person. How every letter is formed adds more information about the writer that must be factored in to the personality profile. Among other things are the size and ratio of the upper, middle and lower zones, stroke pressure, writing slant, plus letter beginning and ending strokes. Handwriting analysis is a complicated process because we humans are complicated organisms.

Barberry

B

Written By Allison Prater

arberis Vulgaris, or Barberry, is a small, ovoid orangered berry; similar in appearance to the Goji berry. It is the fruit of a short and stout perennial shrub. This little berry has proven itself to be quite versatile indeed. It is enjoyed by medicine makers, artisans, and chefs alike.

It prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial shade. Barberry bushes can be propagated by seeds sown in greenhouses or cold frames. Seeds must be planted in the fall, and they will germinate the following spring. Plants can also be propagated through cuttings, taking from the rooted suckers, which can be separated. The bushes can easily become overgrown, so it’s best to prune and thin branches after the bush has flowered. To rejuvenate a neglected bush, prune it in the winter time, cutting down to about a foot from the ground. During the dry summer months, water frequently and give the bush plenty of organic fertilizers, such as compost tea and red worm casings. In areas where the winters are particularly harsh, barberries may need to be sheltered from the winds, to keep them from dying back.

Barberry has been used as a medicinal herb by many cultures throughout history. In ancient Egypt, Barberry and fennel seed syrup were taken to prevent against the plague. In Medieval Europe, barberry based medicines were taken as antiseptics, purgatives and tonics. The first North Americans prepared medicines from the root bark of the plant, which was said to restore the body from general weakness, and improve the appetite.

Barberry jams and preserves are a safe and delicious way to enjoy this fruit. Barberry’s flavor is similar to cranberry, with a bit more citrus. For a fruit spread that is both delicate and tart, Barberries can be combined with Rosehips, or they can be used in combination with other red berries. They can also be used in stews and chutneys. Candied berries also make a unique pastry decoration.

Laboratory studies have shown that one of Barberry’s main constituents, berberine, is reported to be astringent, anesthetic, antibacterial, and anticonvulsant. Crushed barberries in a little water can soothe a sore throat. It has sedative and uterine stimulant properties as well. The use of barberry is generally considered safe, although pregnant women should take caution because of the uterine stimulant properties.

References:

The root of the Barberry bush is used for making yellow dye. The roots are best harvested in late summer, or early fall. Fresh or dried, the roots produce a beautiful deep yellow hue for wool, linen and cotton. No mordant is required, and the color fastness will be fair to good.

Barberry is easily cultivated in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. It is zone four hardy, so it can be grown in cooler climates.

GARDENING “A Rough Patch” Written By Teresa Howell

on’t tell anyone, but my sister-in-law and I pool our tree order from the 4-H Small Animal Committee. See, you must buy a minimum of five of any species of tree you order, and we usually divide the lot up between us.

Not a P lague

A couple months ago, we got together at my house to draw up our order. We were finishing up a cup of coffee before we got down to business. “What about locusts?” Becky asked. “They come in both black and golden. Which would you like?” “They’re both ugly,” I said. “And it seems like once you have one, they’re all over the place.” I wore thick shoes when we went to pick up the trees last week. If Becky ordered any locusts, I wanted to be ready to stomp on them before they spread. And there were locusts in our order--five black locust TREES.

The black locust trees we ordered will grow fast, and yes, they can be invasive. They do sucker, especially after they’ve been cut. I planted mine out a ways, and if I put them on a limited water budget, they shouldn’t get out of hand. But I probably wouldn’t mind if they did. Of great importance to me, since I just put up a hive of bees, is that locusts are an excellent honey source. I’ve read that the honey is nearly as clear as water, and of exceptional quality. They only flower for a short time, but since that flowering occurs in late May or early June, after most of the fruit trees are finished, they should be a valuable stop-gap for my bees. Although black locusts grow fast, the wood is exceptionally hard, and makes wonderful rot-resistant fence posts. If Wikipedia knows anything, they also make excellent firewood, and although they’re difficult to ignite, they will even burn before they’re seasoned. If it weren’t for the locust borer--which is apparently not a problem here--black locusts would be an important lumber crop in the Eastern United states, where it is native. But wait, there’s more. Black locusts fix nitrogen as well, as do many of the trees on the 4-H plant list: caragana, Russian olive, buffalo berry among them. I’m always impressed by trees that fix nitrogen, and I’ve planted all of the above species. I’m dubious about their value as nitrogen-fixers, though. I would prefer to have the nitrogen where I’ll be planting my vegetables, and I can’t think it’s wise to plant trees of any kind in my garden beds. The self-same roots that fix the nitrogen would probably out-compete my corn, and would shade it out in any case. Although honey locust was behind the door we did not choose, I’ve got them on my list for next year. Names are ironic--bees will not make honey from honey locust. Honey locusts, or Gleditsia triacanthos, are not even in the same genus as black locusts, or Robinia pseudoacacia. They’re quite a lot alike. The foliage looks the same, and both produce pods. However, black locust pods are poisonous, and honey locust pods are edible. In fact, the sweet taste of the pulp is where the name “honey locust” comes from. The tree itself comes from the Midwest, from South Dakota to Texas, and east from there. The tree is easy to transplant, and tolerates alkaline and drought. The immature pods of the honey locust contain a sweet edible pulp, and the pods and leaves are useful animal feed. Best of all, it’s possible to make them into beer. That’s my plan. Let’s see, plant them next year, figure six or seven years till they produce pods, a few weeks to brew the beer--yeah. Give me a call in about eight years--I’ll invite you over for a glass of honey locust beer. When Teresa Howell isn’t trying to figure out how to make beer out of her plants, she teaches English at Great Basin College.

BOOKREVIEW

Money and the Law of Attraction: Learning to Attract Wealth, Health and Happiness By Esther and Jerry Hicks

Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

T

his is one of the most effective books ever written on creating prosperity, health and happiness because it explains that everything is vibration. Every thought, every emotion, every material thing has a vibrational frequency, like a radio signal. And when you realize that like attracts like, you can see why your positive or negative thoughts, emotions and expectations (including your words and your stories), are bringing about what you’re experiencing in your physical body, your relationships and your work.

The Secret went viral and enlightened people all over the world, but it was really only the kindergarten version of the Law of Attraction, because a movie has but one or two hours to get the message across. This book gets down to the nitty gritty, and answers some of the questions that thousands of people have asked of Abraham over the years. These are questions that you probably have too, such as, “How can I possibly be the attractor of my every experience?” Or, “Why doesn’t needing money attract it?” Or, “To what degree can I control my health?” Over 150 questions such as these are answered in this book. Dozens of processes designed to get us out of our old patterns of behavior into new ways of thinking are explained.

The movie The Secret was created because a producer from Australia, Rhonda Byrne, heard about the Law of Attraction and came to the States to interview Jerry and Esther Hicks, and ended up filming many of the people who, over the years, had come to ask the advice of Esther (who channels the non-physical consciousness known as Abraham).

The book is divided into five sections. The first section is about pivoting your mind to something you DO want, so that you can attract it. Also, the process of Positive Aspects is covered here. This is a powerful energetic process that works especially well with relationships. The second section is about attracting money and manifesting abundance. Again, the roles of invisible vibrational frequencies are explained in detail, plus many examples of everyday life situations are given. The third section goes into how you can maintain your physical well being. The fourth explains different perspectives of health, weight and mind. And the fifth goes into the subject of careers and profitable sources of income. This book is an encyclopedia of excellent advice contained in just one volume. At the end of the book is a transcript of Abraham Live: A Law of Attraction workshop recorded in Boston, Massachusetts; and in the hardback version of the book, a CD of that same workshop is included. In addition to being the motivation for the movie The Secret, as well as dozens of other spin-off books by various authors, Esther and Jerry Hicks have published many other books and thousands of CDs on the subject of Law of Attraction, and maintain an interactive website at www.abraham-hicks.com. Oprah Winfrey calls them “a publishing sensation,” as almost 1.5 million copies of their last three books have been sold around the world. These are leading-edge teachings, and they impact every area of human life; therefore, they are extremely popular with people in many different cultures. In the past, Jerry and Esther have traveled to 60 cities a year presenting Law of Attraction workshops. Jerry is recently deceased, but Esther is carrying on with her schedule, as joyful and as professional as ever. There are usually some video clips on the website showing Esther channeling Abraham. You can also sign up to listen in to those workshops, wherever they’ve given in the world. Or you can receive the CD of that workshop later, if you wish. The message is always upbeat, on point, positive, and may be very humorous. But answers are often not what you would expect. The non-physical consciousness known as Abraham seems to see the whole picture around anyone asking a question, and gives amazingly astute and to-the-point answers. I have known Esther and Jerry for 27 years, before Esther ever began channeling Abraham. It has been my great honor and joy to personally know these amazing people; to use and teach the Abraham processes every day, and to watch the ever-expanding development of the message that we are eternal beings here on Earth to experience the deliciousness of physical life, with free will to make our own choices. These messages are very clear on the fact that we should celebrate ourselves, our genius and our creativity every day. Feeling Good draws to us, through our thoughts, emotions and expectations, what we want. Feeling bad, or putting ourselves down, draws to us what we don’t want. So our job is to use our brilliant built-in Emotional Guidance System to feel good as much of the time as we can. So Celebrate Yourself! You are much grander and much more loved than you ever imagined!

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK

VITAL, LIFE-GIVING IDEAS IN A TIME OF PROFOUND CHANGE Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | July - 2012

T

here are numerous indicators in the charts this month that family life is under stress. We know this--it’s not news; relatively few kids have parents who are able to be fully present for them. Yet astrology in the immediate vicinity is saying specifically to be cautious of decisions and incidents that impact children; which, can span from how you respond to seemingly ordinary problems, to domestic politics, to acts of war. The Sun in Cancer (which began June 20) is a reminder to keep your energy focused at home as a high priority. There is a potent Full Moon in Cancer on Tuesday, July 3, and the New Moon in Cancer on July 19. Venus stationed direct in Gemini on June 27. Mercury will turn retrograde in Leo on July 14 and stations direct in Leo on Aug. 8. Aries (March 20-April 19) Material that’s been below the surface is likely to come bubbling into your relationships over the next few weeks. You know that none of what you’re addressing is actually new, and if you have not figured that out, that’s what I’m here to remind you. The questions to ask yourself are things like: What are my limits? What is acceptable conduct toward me? What constitutes a violation of trust? What agendas do people have? Up to a point, it’s fair to say that people are acting on you, though if you don’t honor your own boundaries, you will be the one who must take full responsibility for what happens to you. If you start coming from that position and refuse to be a victim, you will be able to keep hold of your own power and make healthy decisions a lot sooner.

a lot to learn from older people who are not your parents; they have different information, a different agenda and no power over you except for what feels authentic and persuasive. Yet the thing to remember is that all roads lead to a spiritual question. That question involves the nature of your existence and the extent to which it’s possible for others to dictate who you are. You no longer need that kind of influence, correct? Cancer (June 21-July 22) You now get an extended opportunity to see what you’ve been missing. You’re used to keeping yourself entertained with certain stories about who you are and about the nature of your personality and certain deeper psychic levels. You’re about to discover that no matter how well you thought you knew yourself, you were missing approximately half of the story. What’s more interesting is that you’re likely to remember that you’ve actually thought of this all before; you just forgot that you noticed it or figured it out. Therefore, take a circumspect approach to everything. Check in with as many viewpoints as you can think of. Some of your best guidance is going to be coming from your dreams, which will be an effective way to look into your blind spots and dark corners.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) Focus your financial priorities. Even if you’re in a state of relative abundance, now is the time to plan carefully for the future. I suggest you take two lines of approach. One is to get clear about what’s important. There are a lot of ways your money could be directed, and some are clearly more important than others. Some of the most expensive things are entirely meaningless, particularly if you have them only for show. Second is I suggest you look for (and work with) non-cash forms of resources. This includes everything from ideas to people willing to help you to repurposing what you already have. Be bold about asking for what people don’t seem to need; bartering and other forms of exchange will be mutually profitable.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Get it in writing and put it in writing. You would be amazed how much trouble this can save. Jot down the promises you make and those that are made to you. Where money or other property is changing hands, make sure there is a written agreement. Get contracts in employment or freelance situations, and make sure that everyone sticks to them. We will assume that the truth is on your side and that therefore, documentation in any form will favor you, or favor everyone involved in the circumstances of your life. Remember that what is fair is fair. You won’t have to fight for it though you might have to assert your position with some emphasis--and if it ever comes time to do that, you want something to keep in your folder just in case you ever need it.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) Jupiter is now in your sign for the next year--and that suggests some bold adventures are coming your way. The key idea to work with is different. If you have a choice between options for what to do, try the unfamiliar one. If you want to read, try an author you’ve never experienced. Stretch the bounds of your mind, approaching problems from new points of view. You have

July 2012

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Early this month Mars leaves your sign after more than eight months, including a long retrograde. Mars moves forward carrying the fussy precision of Virgo. Though the more significant development is that you have learned to be more assertive about what matters to you the most. Not only that, you’re likely to have figured out what that actually is, and to have taken some chances on making sure that it’s a priority for you. The challenge you face going forward is about continuing to take the leading role in your own life. You’re vulnerable to the influences and persuasions of others, and you may not be in the mood to stand up for yourself like you’ve been with Mars visiting you. Just remember what you’ve learned about how easy it is, and how well it works.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Avoid the temptation to base your relationships on your attachment to the past, or to the way you think things were. It would only be a distraction, and you don’t have time for that now. You have many significant responsibilities to attend to, and setting things right won’t necessarily be a simple or fast process. I suggest you embrace that complexity, and make sure you focus on one agenda item at a time, starting with what you decide is the most important. If you do this with some persistence, you will build your confidence and gradually bring a sense of order to what may seem entirely out of control right now. One potential distraction is unhealthy emotional attachment. Do your best to keep your focus right now, and stand back from those who obsess over the way things were.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Now you’ll get to see if everything you’ve been worrying about for so long was actually real. At least when you look at the very short list of things that actually turn out to be problems, you’ll have the determination to resolve the issues. However, avoid “solving” things in such a way that causes you to go out of balance, thus creating more issues and the need for more effort. Assert yourself gently. Keep your mind on the wholesystem known as your life. Rather than putting energy fast and furious into the small elements of what seems wrong, consider ways you can make many improvements with a few focused decisions. The key word is focus--a solid understanding of what you want to do and how you plan to do it, rather than committing to pouring out your energy.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) You seem to be pouring more and more energy into an effort to get yourself unstuck in a creative or relationship situation-perhaps both--though it would help if you did one little thing: think differently. That’s another way of saying “not the same” or “new approach” or “reconsider everything” or “take a chance you would not normally take.” This is something that has to come from the inside rather than from trying to change your circumstances. A thousand colors of paint does not make someone a painter, nor does being naked make someone a lover. What matters is making contact with the spark of passion inside yourself, and then having faith in it long enough to do something creative. It’ll also help if you name your fear of loss for what it is; that’s blocking a lot of energy.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) You’re having an influence on a number of situations much larger than you, though at this point you might not see how that is working. The astrology suggests that you have the ability to tip the scales on situations that are hanging in the balance. Yet there’s a larger matter at stake, which is your ability to maintain a sense of the interests of everyone involved. In a sense, you’re the guardian of justice, and I suggest you only devote energy and attention to outcomes that are authentically fair. You have the ability to sway things any way you want, though the karmic stakes are a little higher than you’re accustomed to. If you’re not fair with everyone in your life, you will discover how unfair people can be to you--which is silly, considering how much you both have to offer.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You may not feel especially popular, though you’re having an impact on the people around you even if they’re not letting on. Yet the planets are suggesting that you shift your emphasis to your personal space and your inner world, and put some boundaries between you and groups of any kind. Being so available to so many people is not helping you, and it’s not the thing that’s making a difference in the lives of those around you right now. There are relatively few people with whom you want to exchange energy, and I suggest you keep your emphasis focused at home and on keeping your life interesting rather than large. Emphasize quality rather than growth, and for now I suggest you put your emotional and financial resources into your home rather than business or work. A plant grows from the roots, and so do you.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) You may feel like you live in a glass house, but it’s more like the hall of mirrors. You will be here for a while, so I suggest you get acquainted with what you’re looking at. Or rather, notice that what you project outward will account for most of what you see in front of you. This is usually true, though it’s particularly vivid now. If there’s a message underneath the surface, it’s focus on yourself if you want to change your life. Though there’s no point trying to change others, few people actually remember this. However, the results you get will speak for themselves. If you change your mind or your point of view, the reflection you’re looking at will change--though like when you’re looking in a mirror, it may be in the opposite direction.

appy Fourth of July! Most teens forget about what the Fourth of July is about, which is the day America became independent. This Fourth of July, make sure you are not only celebrating summer and being out of school , it’s not only about the fireworks either, just make sure to give a little thanks to all the Americans who gave their lives to give our country its independence. Have a great Fourth of July!

“Kids Corner”

Written By Ariana Purcell

Last month we went over Habit five in the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Sean Covey. This month is all about Habit six, which is titled, “Synergize.” You may not know what this word means, so let me explain. Synergize means when two people work together and create a better solution to a problem; it’s my way, your way. It’s the better way, the higher way! The author goes on to explain how great synergy can be, and how fast work gets done. Here are the key points to look for:

• Interpersonal: Learn through interaction and communication with others

Synergy can be hard to do, especially because everyone’s brain works differently. So as you might already know, a lot of kids work differently. Have you ever been in math class and a teacher shows you how to do a math problem one way, but you had already learned how to work out this problem using a different system; and then the kid sitting next to you uses a different system then you and the teacher. You, the kid sitting next to you, and the teacher have different systems, and different working brains. Dr. Thomas Armstrong said that kids may learn best through their most dominant intelligence:

• Intrapersonal: Learn through their own feelings An Action Plan will help you become synergistic. Here’s how it works:

• Linguistic: learn through reading, writing, telling stories • Logical-Mathematical: learn through logic, patterns, categories, relationships • Bodily-Kinesthetic: learn through bodily sensations, touching • Spatial: learn through images and pictures • Musical: learn through sound and rhythm

HEALTHYPETS

Holistic Veterinarian: Dr. Shawn Messonnier, DVM By Erina Fischer

W

ith the growing awareness of natural health for humans and the alternative therapies available to us, pet owners are seeking parallel ways to keep their furry loved ones healthy. With the rising rates of cancer in dogs, our focus on pet health care needs to be updated as well.

Another important reason for rising cancer rates is the prolific use of animal-by-products and preservatives in dog and cat food. Dr. Messonnier advises seeking better quality brands, such as: Nature’s Variety, Old Mother Hubbard and Enova. Work with your vet to learn which brand and type will be best for your pet.

Dr. Shawn Messonnier, DVM is a holistic veterinarian and author of “The Natural Health Bible for Dogs and Cats” and “Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs”. Dr. Messonnier is the “The Natural Vet” featured once a week on Martha Stewart Living’s talk show on Sirius Satellite Radio. He is also a consultant for the supplement company, Pet Togethers. He discussed with Healthy Beginnings what pet owners can do to prevent serious illness in their animals.

Chronic allergies, most commonly of the skin, can be hard to treat and very frustrating for the owner, as well as the dog. Frequent bathing, supplements and fatty acids can help. Dr. Messonnier’s book “The Allergy Solution for Dogs” explains in detail how to ease the pain of allergies.

Dr. Messonnier has been practicing holistic veterinary medicine for ten years and he gained in interest in “natural pet care” after treating chronic skin allergies in dogs and cats that would not heal. Dr. Messonnier describes his holistic approach as individualized and he lets the pet’s body tell him what it needs. Some of the same homeopathic treatments that are used for humans, Dr. Messonnier uses on his animals. The differences in treatment are different indications/symptoms and dosing. He attributes the rising cancer rates in dogs to genetics, our toxic environment, improper food and the excessive use of vaccinations. “Even conventional veterinarians currently recommend that vaccinations should only be given every three years and that’s even too much.” Dr. Messonnier said. “We let the pet’s body tell us what needs to be done.” At his office, Paws and Claws Animal Hospital, located in Texas, he uses blood vaccine titers every year to gauge the levels of the vaccine still in the blood stream and, depending on the animal, will hold off on vaccinations for up to five years. If your vet does not offer the titer, he recommends vaccinating every three years for safety.

Visit www.HBmag.com

Dr. Messonnier summarizes a total approach to your animal’s health as these four areas of focus: • Diet • Vaccinations • Supplements • Chemicals that your pet is in contact with regularly, such as flea and tick prevention, etc. Dr. Messonnier also advises getting a smart health insurance plan for your animal, as veterinary costs can be exorbitant. He recommends finding a plan that is simple and covers illnesses, as well as accidents. Pets Best Insurance (www.petsbest.com), for instance, treats 80 percent of your vet bills and even covers homeopathic treatments for cancer and allergies. “Whenever you prevent a problem, you save money in the long run.” Dr. Messonnier said. Just as we can prevent illness and maintain optimum health for ourselves, we can ensure a long and healthy life for our furry family members. ave you ever tried to bake a loaf of bread with the oven door wide open? Probably not. You know that unless the door is closed, the oven won’t get hot enough to bake the dough. This concept also applies to the development of your personality. Without enough “heat” you tend not to change.

Harnessing the Fires of Transformation Unlike an oven, the “heat” of psychological growth comes from your emotions. They are the fuel of inner transformation. But this fuel can do no work if it is not properly contained and channeled. Like the fire of a locomotive, the heat of your emotions must be concentrated and harnessed. Only when it is guided to the correct outlet, or resolution, do you grow. Unfortunately, when the tension of your emotions gets uncomfortable, you want to discharge it quickly, but not always maturely. Turning to alcohol or drugs to dampen the intensity of anxiety is an example. Being abusive or abruptly ending a relationship because you are angry with your friend is another. Too often we take shortcuts around unpleasant situations and emotions, rather than work through them. When we do this, we sabotage the very opportunities that might help us mature as people. The convenient path is rarely the path of growth. We compromise and stifle our soul by settling for cheap solutions to complex and uncomfortable problems. Andy Drymalski, EdD, is a licensed psychologist and Jungian psychologist in Reno and Carson City. For more information call (775) 786-3818, or visit online at www. renocarsonpsychologist.com.

Life’s challenges are the oven and you are the bread. Have faith in your process and the values of your soul. Let them lead you through the emotional fires of transformation to a place of deepened integrity and maturity.

New Discovery May Safeguard Your Brain From Dementia Written By Dr. Mercola Continued from Page 19

Fasting every other day had a striking effect on people with asthma in a small study he ran a few years ago. ‘After eight weeks they had lost eight percent of their body weight, but they also benefited from the ability of calorie restriction to reduce inflammation. Tests showed that levels of inflammation markers had dropped by 90 per cent. As levels came down, their breathing became much easier,’ says Professor Mattson.”

part is not really how many calories you eat per day; it’s about getting the right nutrients. It’s important to realize that all calories are NOT created equal, and will not have identical effects your weight or health. Their value depends on the types of food (nutrients) they’re attached to. In the US, six of the top 10 sources of calories are carbohydrates from sugars and grains, and this is a major reason why so many Americans are overweight. They’re simply eating far too many sugars. It’s very important to restrict carbs when doing a calorie restrictive diet. Your body does not require sugars for optimal health, but it does require protein and fats.

There is one important caveat, however. Mattson’s research showed that symptoms returned about two weeks after quitting the intermittent fasting, so it’s really a lifestyle commitment, not a temporary fix. Some can handle intermittent fasting long-term whereas others might find it too challenging. Still, it’s an option to consider if you’re having health issues or weight problems.

When you cut out the sugars and carbs, it is wise to replace them with high quality non-processed fats. Some of my favorites include organic grass-fed raw butter, eggs, coconut oil, avocados, and almonds.

Fasting and Exercise: Are They Compatible? I’ve previously interviewed fitness expert Ori Hofmekler on the issue of fasting and exercise. According to Ori, fasting also has the surprising benefit of helping you reconstruct your muscles when combined with exercise. This is due to an ingenious preservation mechanism that protects your active muscle from wasting itself. In a nutshell, if you don’t have sufficient fuel in your system when you exercise, your body will break down other tissues but not the active muscle, i.e. the muscle being exercised.

There’s very compelling evidence showing that calories from fat are far more beneficial for your health than calories from carbohydrates. And fear not...It’s already been well established that stearic acid (found in cocoa and animal fat) has no effect on distorting your healthy cholesterol ratios at all, and actually gets converted in your liver into the monounsaturated fat called oleic acid. The other two, palmitic and lauric acid, do raise total cholesterol. However, since they raise “good” cholesterol as much or more than “bad” cholesterol, you’re still actually lowering your risk of heart disease. And there are additional benefits.

That said, neither Ori nor I advocate starvation combined with rigorous exercise. It’s important to be sensible. And you need to consume sufficient amounts of protein in order to prevent muscle wasting. Also, while there’s more science in support of calorie restriction than any other diet in the world today, there are side effects to chronic calorie restriction, such as decreased thyroid function and decreased testosterone.

Lauric acid (as from coconut oil) has shown to boost thyroid hormone activity along with the body’s metabolic rate. This is obviously a huge advantage to those interested in weight loss or those who suffer from underactive thyroid.

In my own personal experimentation, I have definitely fasted too long and lost loads of muscle mass. So now I tend to use fasting if I have consumed foods that caused me to gain a few extra pounds. I will skip my breakfast and exercise fasting. My next meal will be lunch, and then I’ll have dinner. This has worked quite well and allows me to easily drop a few pounds and get my body fat into the ideal range. It has worked so well that I am in the process of considering doing this on a permanent basis as it just makes loads of sense to replicate ancestral eating patterns that clearly did not have access to food 24/7,

I couldn’t encourage you more to implement this program. It has radically improved my personal confidence in using diet choices to achieve high level wellness and optimal body fat. Cutting down on your grains and sugars, replacing them with high quality fats and skipping some meals, especially before exercise, seem to be a powerful combination to help you Take Control of Your Health.

Cut the Correct Calories...

One important fact that many tend to gloss over or ignore entirely when it comes to calorie restriction is which type of calories to restrict. From a biological standpoint, the important
