Take a walk around our lovely region – you’ll find colorful murals and thought-provoking sculptures throughout our cities. We truly live in a place where we have infinite opportunities to exercise our bodies and our minds.

This month, our goal is to provide you with information to help you and your children lead healthy, happy lifestyles. Children truly are our future, and it’s imperative that we instill healthful habits, provide positive reinforcement and encourage curiosity in the cultures and environments that surround them.

In this issue, we provide you with both nutritionist-and health coach-approved healthy eating tips and tricks to please your picky eaters, we highlight the importance of good dental hygiene – baby teeth are not disposable – and we share the benefits of gardening with your children.

THE CHILDREN OF HELA BIMA ONE MAN’S DREAM TO ENLIGHTEN AND EMPOWER THE CHILDREN OF SRI LANKA

By Bill Griffith Their children suffered and their ancient culture was nearly lost forever. Sri Lanka has also endured decades of unsustainable, chemical-based farming practices using harmful pesticides and fertilizers. These chemicals are especially damaging to the children, causing severe birth defects and abmormalities with the number of cases rapidly increasing. One doctor, Dr. Jayanath Abeywickrama (Dr. Abey), decided it was time to get involved, so he visited with the rice farmers and their children in an attempt to better understand their conditions and the challenges they faced.

Sri Lanka, land of light. Originally known as Hela Bima, (Hela means “light,” Bima means, “land of”) Sri Lanka is an ancient and magical island located off of the Southeastern tip of India and is home to many of the world’s oldest, most treasured sacred traditions and spiritual practices. The people are friendly and the children are filled with laughter and joy. Blessed with an abundance of wild spices, herbs, fruits and vegetables, exotic Sri Lanka is an eden of tropical beaches and cyrstal clear rivers winding their way through breathtaking jungles with elephants, monkeys and millions of colorful flowers and birds celebrating their beautiful melodies. This is the changing world of Sri Lanka today, but for more than 500 years, Sri Lanka was under the control of the British Empire, and during that time it was forbidden for the people of Sri Lanka to teach their beliefs or to practice their sacred ceremonies.

Dr. Abey began working with the rice farmers, demonstrating the dangers of using these chemicals and teaching them how to restore their soil and farms back into an organic, sustainable growing system. The plan worked. The rice farmers were successful and began to experience more bountiful harvests while still protecting their children and communities. Dr. Abey was so impressed that he founded the Hela Bima Rice Project, where they raise funds and use proceeds from the sale of the rice to build medical clinics, schools and other community projects. Many of these children have never had access to medical treatment or public education. These vital services are now being provided, helping to reduce the number of birth defects and abnormalities, improving the overall health and well-being of the community and empowering an entire generation of children with the educational tools and resources they need to lead independent and successful lives. One of the students recently won a very prestigious national education competition. Not bad for a school that just opened a few years ago.

“Simon says” is a memorable child’s game that we’ve all played in the classroom or at home with friends and loved ones, helping us exercise listening skills and learn the importance of following directions. But, what if you could play a similar game that encourages listening skills, instills the importance of following directions AND improves balance, strength and awareness? “Yogi says” just might be the new replacement for “Simon says,” as recent research suggests that yoga and mindfulness have been shown to improve both physical and mental health in school-age children. Therefore, the next time you and your children or students are up for a game of “Simon says,” incorporate yoga poses and transform “Simon says” into your own yogi practice: “Yogi says”* One person is selected as the yogi. The other players must do the yoga poses that the yogi tells them to do if the instruction starts with “Yogi says.” If the yogi doesn’t use “Yogi says,” then players do not do the pose. Keep changing the person who is yogi, so that everyone gets a turn.

Yoga is becoming increasingly popular among children in the United States, according to research reported by the Harvard Medical School. A national survey found that 3 percent of U.S. children (1.7 million) did yoga as of 2012 – that’s 400,000 more children than in 2007.

Jeanne Robinson, owner of Sierra Springs Clinical Hypnotherapy and Blue Lotus Yoga & Meditation in Reno, has been teaching children’s yoga for more than 4 years. She incorporates storytelling, music and coloring into each practice to foster interest, creativity and engagement.

“What is really cool about children’s yoga is it activates their creativity, and they’re just allowed to be themselves – there’s no competition,” she said. “It builds confidence, creativity, focus and helps them with their environment and the outside world.”

Yoga can improve a child’s focus, memory, self-esteem, behavior and academic performance, and can even reduce anxiety and stress, according to research reported by the Harvard Medical School. Yoga can also help children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) by improving inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity – the core symptoms of ADHD. Many schools are working to integrate yoga into their physical education programs, and parents are encouraged to integrate yoga into their athome routines.

“I make sure that the parents attend class with their children,” Jeanne said. “I want them there to see what I’m doing, so that maybe they can take some of this home.”

Jeanne’s 5-year-old daughter began her yoga practice in the womb, and attends Jeanne’s yoga classes and even meditates at home.

“I think she’s really proud and confident to show other kids what she knows,” Jeanne said.

“It’s taught her a lot of focus and concentration – she’s very grounded and she also has so much compassion for other kids. … She will sometimes sit with me after we do yoga together in the living room, and she’ll close her eyes and she’ll do Oms with me – she loves doing Oms. And, Oms are great because they quiet the mind. Just that sound and that vibration could completely bring someone that’s hyper or scattered to be more grounded in that moment.”

This game is a good warm-up exercise to increase focus.

• One person starts as the leader. The leader chooses a pose to do and shows it to the others.

• The other players copy the leader’s pose as if they are looking into a mirror.

• Change the leader with each round of poses, so that everyone has a turn at being the leader.

Red light, green light yoga*

One person is chosen as the stoplight. He or she stands at the front of the room. The other players are the “cars,” and they start at the opposite wall. The stoplight starts the game by calling “green light!” The other players then use yoga poses to move forward. When the stoplight calls “red light!,” each player needs to be in a yoga pose and remain still. Everyone takes a turn being the stoplight.

Loving kindness meditation*

• Find a comfortable seated position or lie down.

• Close your eyes and think about someone you love.

FIBROMYALGIA IS REAL, AND MEDICATIONS ARE NOT THE ONLY ANSWER: PART 2

In part one of this series we discussed the evolution of fibromyalgia as a disease condition, the name itself and what it means, the 1990 and 2010 American College of Rheumatology guidelines for its diagnosis, the concepts of central sensitization and concepts of past emotional traumas and their role in the development of pain in the fibromyalgia patient. In this article, we will cover the contribution of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, digestive bowel issues and peripheral neuropathy to complete the clinical picture of what fibromyalgia is for the reader.

Hashimoto’s: A huge proportion of the patients coming to us with a diagnosis of fibromyalgia test positive for Hashimoto’s disease. There are numerous comprehensive presentations on our website: www.PowerHealthTalk.com. But, in short, this is a condition in which the immune system kills the thyroid. Due to the fatigue aspect of fibromyalgia, the patient is often tested for thyroid function and may be told that the thyroid test is normal, or told that they have a hypothyroid and are put on thyroid hormone replacement medication. Uncommonly tested for are the antibodies that attacked the thyroid and, when present in a certain number, indicate that the patient instead has Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis accounts for about 95 percent of low thyroid cases in the United States. It is mostly not tested for in the medical model because establishing its diagnosis does not change treatment to anything different than a hypothyroid. Your doctor in both cases will give you thyroid medication and monitor your TSH. This is not sufficient treatment for Hashimoto’s. Here’s why: The immune inflammation from the immune attack on the thyroid we are finding can be very damaging to the pain nerves throughout the entire body – not unlike the excess adrenaline mentioned in part one. Imagine you get a viral infection and your immune system is trying to kill the virus. This process creates a lot of inflammation. As a result, you experience joint pain, achiness, tiredness, poor energy and a touch of depression.

This same inflammatory process occurs with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The immune system should never kill ”us” but, in the U.S., this process of autoimmunity to the thyroid is becoming an epidemic, as one out of four women in the U.S. have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

And it’s inflammatory response, along with the previously mentioned adrenaline hormones, are what sensitize the fibromyalgia patient nociceptors (pain fiber endings) throughout the body and cause the pain that comes with this condition.

A huge number of fibromyalgia patients also suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. This condition is what causes cramping and bloating after you eat. IBS is also defined by diarrhea, constipation, alternating constipation and diarrhea, any of which could last for 3 months (and at least for 3 days out of each of those 3 months). IBS can involve gluten sensitivities. It can include bacterial issues in which our population of good bacteria and bad bacteria are functionally out of balance: the bad bacteria overtake the landscape in a fibromyalgia patient. The fibromyalgia patient can also get too many bacteria, good or bad, and that can be an issue. Whatever it is in that patient, the abdominal inflammation from whatever is causing the IBS create an immune inflammation throughout the body that can then cause the fibromyalgia patient to have pain again by, for example, setting off immune inflammation against the thyroid and perpetuating that whole pain cycle.

As a subset of the IBS contributing factors, we must mention gluten. Relative to gluten sensitivity, it is significant to fibromyalgia patients even if they don’t have celiac, as it actually damages both central (brain) and peripheral (arms and legs) nerve tissue resulting in brain fog, depression and peripheral neuropathy in about 50-60 percent of the fibromyalgia patient population.

Peripheral neuropathy is the newest and hopefully last spoke in the wheel of positive contributors to fibromyalgia. About 50 percent of all fibromyalgia patients have peripheral neuropathy (see our presentation on www.PowerHealthTalk.com on small fiber neuropathy for a more comprehensive discussion of this topic). Peripheral neuropathy is numbness, tingling, burning, sharp shooting pain felt by the small fiber nerves in the feet and hands… and now we understand, also, the torso. In fact, recent studies show that there is 10 times more damage to the peripheral nerves in these areas in people who have fibromyalgia and peripheral neuropathy versus those who only have peripheral neuropathy. The long and short of this finding is that peripheral neuropathy in the fibromyalgia patient must be addressed in that patient’s clinical protocols inasmuch as it may be the causative generator for their overall pain (along with stress hormones, cortisol, and adrenaline and Hashimoto’s immune inflammation) as well as the direct cause of their IBS, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, leaky gut and restless leg syndrome – if they are experiencing any of the latter three conditions as part of their overall clinical picture.

So, fibromyalgia is complex. But, the causes are known. And in the properly selected patient they can be addressed and managed. There are no quick fixes, no one-size-fits-all diets. Bags of supplements aren’t the answer. So, what is? Next month we will outline our paradigm for the treatment of fibromyalgia and how individualized the approach to fibromyalgia must be for treatment to be effective.

BABY TEETH ARE NOT DISPOSABLE

are most assuredly NOT disposable. Baby teeth play a critical role in the physical and social development of children, and keeping those “disposable” teeth healthy is the parent’s responsibility. Here are several factors you should consider when caring for your child’s teeth: Starting out right Most babies get their first tooth sometime between 3-12 months old. While the teething process may not be fun, it is a sign of proper development and great things to come. Unfortunately, many parents do not realize the importance of caring for their baby’s teeth, even before the teeth grow in. By allowing your baby to chew on teething toys or developmental toothbrushes (like the Baby Banana Brush), you’re helping them get used to the unique sensation of tools designed to clean the teeth.

One of the earliest and most devastating dental mistakes parents can make is putting their baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. While it may make sleeping easier, it can often lead to “baby bottle tooth decay,” a condition where cavities develop on the baby teeth at a very young age. Sometimes, it is so severe that we have no choice but to remove all the teeth on very young children, leaving them toothless until the permanent teeth begin to grow in around age six. Instead of milk or juice, use plain water in a bottle or use a pacifier for the child to suck on, instead. That way, you can rest peacefully both now and in the future.

I’ll admit that washing the dishes is not on my list of favorite activities. Some of the things I love about summertime are picnics and BBQs, and the fact that we use a lot more paper plates. I happily volunteer to “wash the dishes” after a large outdoor meal, because I can simply gather the dirty dishes and throw them away, no washing required!

While that approach might work well for a family picnic, it definitely doesn’t work for children’s teeth. Sure, baby teeth will eventually fall out and be replaced, but they

Proper care of the baby teeth can help set your child on a path for good self-esteem.

While it may seem cute initially, thumb sucking (or finger sucking) can become a major developmental problem both physically and socially. By constantly sucking on their thumb, a child actually changes the way their jawbones grow. Their bones will literally grow around their finger, resulting in an upper jaw that is too long and narrow and a lower jaw that may be underdeveloped. Additionally, the social consequences of thumb sucking at school can be devastating.

One often-overlooked role of baby teeth is that baby teeth preserve space for the permanent teeth. Before a baby tooth falls out, it acts as a “reserved parking space” for the permanent tooth that will replace it. When baby teeth are lost prematurely, it can lead to alignment issues in the permanent teeth, requiring complicated and extensive orthodontics care. And, a baby tooth that has a cavity can also transfer that cavity to a neighboring permanent tooth. These are problems best avoided through taking good care of children’s teeth. Developing healthy dental habits at an early age will help ensure that your child has the best opportunities for proper development, both physically and socially.

“I want to brush my own teeth” Hopefully you’ve done a great job introducing your baby to good dental habits, and if they are 3 years old, they’re beginning to be able to brush their teeth themselves. Sometimes

we let them brush on their own because they insist, and sometimes we let them become independent because, as parents, we’re lazy. Unfortunately, regardless of desire, children don’t develop the fine-motor control required to adequately brush their teeth until they are 6-8 years old. Until that time, parents should encourage children to brush on their own after meals, but should take charge of brushing and flossing before bed to ensure that children go to sleep with a healthy mouth.

Once children are old enough to brush on their own, it is still important for parents to stay involved. One useful strategy is to use plaque-disclosing products once a week (or once every other week) as a visual “check-up” for how well the teeth are being cleaned.

These chewable tablets or solutions can be purchased at most drug stores, and are an invaluable tool for both children and adults to evaluate the effectiveness of their oral hygiene routine. After brushing, simply chew one of the tablets, swish and then look at your report card in the mirror. Any pink left on the teeth is a cavity waiting to develop.

So, go ahead and toss out those paper plates, but take good care of those baby teeth – they are far from disposable!

“PAULING THERAPY” FOR HEART DISEASE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN VITAMIN C AND CVD

Linus Pauling, Ph.D., not only championed the use of vitamin C for the prevention and treatment of the common cold, he developed a protocol to treat CVD (cardiovascular disease). This refers to the accumulation of damage, most commonly in the coronary arteries, that is associated with high blood pressure, plaque deposits and the increased incidence of heart attacks. He called this “chronic scurvy.”

In 1991, he and Mathias Rath, M.D., examined a body of research and concluded that there was a connection between vitamin C deficiency and the development of CVD. That connection was based on the observation that CVD is, at its core, an accumulation of damage to the collagen and elastin fibers in the walls of the arteries. Vitamin C is required for the creation of replacement collagen fibers. According to Pauling, “CVD is the direct consequence of the inability of humans to synthesize ascorbate (vitamin C) combined with insufficient intake of ascorbate in the modern diet.”

The available epidemiological and clinical evidence is reasonably convincing. Since ascorbate deficiency is the common cause of human CVD, ascorbate supplementation is the universal treatment of the disease.

Despite their (Dr. Pauling and Dr. Rath) success at reversing heart disease, this therapy has yet to hit mainstream medicine. However, a small group of people who are confident to research their own medical challenges have been routinely reversing their CVD/chronic scurvy.

Scurvy is, essentially, a bleeding disease. Chronic scurvy differs from “normal” scurvy only in degree and the body’s response. Both have, at their core, the inability to repair and replace collagen fibers in the vascular tissue. This leads to the resulting failure of that vascular tissue to contain the blood.

When the arteries get to the point where breakthrough bleeding becomes a danger and the required repairs cannot be made due to nutrient deficiencies, the body has a “Plan B.” It builds up a layer of material on the inside of the artery wall to protect the damaged area against the blood pressure. This, of course, is plaque deposits, but could be called “nature’s perfect Band-Aid.” What this phrase means is that the plaque deposits are not “pathological” but instead are an “adaptive response” to weakened arterial walls due to nutritional deficiencies.

The good news is that when these nutrients are adequately supplied and the arteries are repaired (thus removing the reason for the plaque deposits), the plaque deposits gradually disappear on their own!

Yes… you read that right. On a protocol of enough vitamin C (Dr. Pauling also recommended using L-lysine along with it) the plaque buildup in the coronary arteries can be reversed!

JULY GARDENING: MID AND LATE SUMMER GARDEN MAINTENANCE

In this hot, high-desert summer, you need the coolest of the cool soil amendments to keep your garden healthy. Along with having a regulated watering schedule and proper soil amendments, using mulch – a protective layer that spreads over the topsoil – will encourage microbe growth and keep topsoil moist during more severe weather.

What is Mulch, Exactly?

Nature never leaves the ground uncovered, and mulch recreates that rule of (green) thumb in your garden. Mulch comes with all different ingredients and in many types, but your best bet will be COMPOSTED mulch. Whether you find mulch at home or use a dependable store-bought brand, it’s good to know how the mulch was made and what is in the mulch blend. Why is COMPOSTED mulch the best? Mother Nature drops “raw” organic materials on the ground. Over time, these materials are decomposed by soil critters and biology. As they are decomposed, they become soil food and become “processed” rather than just being “raw.” Composted mulches from large-scale composters have already been run through a thermophilic (hot) decomposition process.

This means they can be more easily digested by your soil, have been hot processed to kill any pathogens or diseases (even weed seeds), while still acting as pretty mulches for aesthetic purposes. Composted mulches from your local composter are always the best way to go; however, there are some other mulches out there that you can use.

Grass clippings are cheap and ready for use immediately after mowing. Clippings help to add nitrogen to your soil, but beware because they decay quickly and get slimy, which causes the clippings to give off a gross odor.

Bark shreds or chips are the prettiest mulch around, and they help retain moisture and last quite a bit longer than other mulch materials. Bark is best to use near your trees and planters where you’re not likely to dig up often. If these wood chips are COMPOSTED, they will be even better for your soil!

Pine needles are especially helpful for blueberries, garlic, potatoes and other acid loving plants. Again, if you can find COMPOSTED pine needles they will be in a better “decomposed” format for your soil rather than being just raw needles.

Leaves imitate a forest floor and are great for retaining moisture and smothering weeds.

A Garden With Mulch: • 10 percent of water evaporates • Keeps plant roots and soil cool • Adds nutrition to the soil

A Garden Without Mulch: • 80 percent of water evaporates • Soil dries out • More susceptible to weeds

Applying mulch is easy. Just weed, spread it on out at a 1-2 inch application depth and water. Just be sure to keep mulch about 1-3 inches away from the base of the plant or trees and about a foot away from buildings. This prevents mulch fires, if you have a mulch prone to fire, that is. COMPOSTED mulches, depending on how they are made, tend to be less combustible than raw mulches. This is because the decomposition process helps take out the combustibility of the organic materials. Think slow barbeque.

Summer Watering In our previous article, we talked about the clay-dominant soil in Northern Nevada. As you will recall, clay soils retain water, causing the water to spread out horizontally. If watered too frequently, the moisture will deoxidize the soil, resulting in a weaker root system. To avoid this, plants in clay soils need to be watered less frequently than plants in sandy or loam soils. We suggest keeping your soil evenly moist with drip or irrigation systems. If you don’t have a drip system, make sure to water “deeply.” More water less often, and let it soak.

Don’t Forget to Weed!

Treat your garden to regular weeding. Cut back overgrown plants that may have dry or withering outer leaves or are too big to handle their own weight.

But first, what is seasonal eating? Simply put, it’s focusing your diet around what’s in season in your area. You might think it’s part of the latest food trend, but seasonal eating has been around for centuries. Think about it, what did people eat before modern transportation and hi-tech greenhouses? They ate what they could grow in their local climate during certain seasons. Makes sense, doesn’t it? So, let’s talk about other reasons to eat in season.

One of the best reasons is simple. In-season fruits and vegetables just taste better.

Think about it, who doesn’t love a crisp, fall apple? How about tender asparagus in the spring, a flavorful tomato in the heat of summer or comforting squash in the fall? There’s a reason those grocery store tomatoes are so tasteless over the winter.

They are out of season!

Produce picked in season at its peak is always tastier.

Seasonal eating can be good for your health. Practitioners of holistic and Chinese medicine believe that eating seasonal food keeps us in harmony with nature. While those medicinal practices have evolved over the centuries, their philosophies of eating with the seasons have remained. Practitioners say seasonal eating boosts the immune system and helps ward off disease such as flu in the winter and colds during the transition to spring. Seasonal eating also increases the variety of foods in your diet as the foods change through the seasons of the year.

Your financial health is another good reason for seasonal eating. It’s a fact, eating in-season fruits and vegetables will save you money. Seasonal produce is usually abundantly available, and that translates to lower prices. Out of season produce is usually priced higher because of the cost to grow it, as well as transporting it to your local store. Those out-of-season fruits from Mexico and South America generally come at a steep price.

Seasonal eating benefits the health of your community. When you buy local, seasonal food, the money stays in your community. Even better, buy your produce at a local farmers market or food co-op. Then, most, if not all, of your money goes to the farmer who grew the crop. And you help cut down on the environmental impact of shipping food hundreds – if not thousands – of miles.

One way to ensure you are eating seasonally (and locally) is to join a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture. Many farms and food hubs offer baskets filled with fresh produce, dairy, eggs and even meat delivered to your home or a central pick up location on a regular basis. 5 TIPS FOR KID-FRIENDLY GARDENING ENCOURAGE A LOVE FOR THE OUTDOORS, APPRECIATION FOR FRESH, HEALTHY FOOD

By Rail City Garden Center Kindergarten students at The Magic Treehouse in Sparks, Nev., tend to their raised-bed garden. The Magic Treehouse teaches children the magic of Mother Nature by providing hands-on gardening experiences.

Gardening is a great hobby for all ages, and the younger kids start gardening, the better the chance they will develop a lifelong love of outdoor activities and fresh, healthy food.

Pawl Hollis, owner of Rail City Garden Center in Sparks, Nev., offers a few tips for kidfriendly gardening this summer.

Gardening teaches kids a lot more than just how to plant seeds or pull weeds. Every step of gardening can be a fun, hands-on lesson, with topics such as: • How plants grow and what they need to be healthy • What bugs are beneficial and how they help gardens • Nutrition of different fruits and vegetables • What organic material can be turned into useful compost • How nature changes with every season • How backyard wildlife, such as birds and butterflies, use gardens • How food can be harvested, canned, dried and preserved In addition to these lessons, children can learn many useful qualities from gardening, such as patience, hard work, perseverance and responsibility. To enjoy gardening with kids: Choose Kid-Friendly Plants: Flowers, fruits and vegetables with shorter maturation times are best for kids, so they don’t have to wait so long to see the results of their efforts.

Durable, forgiving plants are also ideal for novices, and plants that have a useful result – something to eat or flowers to pick – will interest kids more. Top kid-friendly plants include sunflowers, carrots, peas, pumpkins, cherry tomatoes, strawberries, radishes, lima

Get Dirty: Kids love to dig in the garden, and it is important that they are allowed – and expected – to do all the necessary gardening chores. This includes preparing the soil, planting, weeding, thinning sprouts, training vines, harvesting produce and removing dead plants. However, it’s important to note that most people – especially children – do not enjoy pulling weeds. Container gardening makes it easier for you to control the soil, light, water and fertilizer (and, of course, offers significantly less weed-pulling duties). And, containers can come in all shapes and sizes. Use containers that can accommodate the roots of the vegetables you want to grow, as vegetables vary in sizes and rooting depths.

The containers also need to have proper drainage, and should not contain chemicals that are toxic to plants and people. Also, remember to use a natural or organic soil – plants under organic production have stronger root systems, and are more efficient at accessing nutrients, minerals and enzymes. Synthetic, high-nitrogen fertilizers are a significant source of pollution and environmental destruction.

Use Kid-Sized Gear: Regular garden tools can be too heavy, long and unwieldy for little hands to use effectively. Opt for child-sized tools so kids can learn to use the proper equipment in the garden. When child-sized options are not available, assist kids as necessary and always supervise their efforts for safety. Not sure what tools you need to start your project? Start out with a small watering can and/or a soaking hose, gloves, hand weeder, hoe or rake, basket for moving around mulch or soil, and a bug net.

Teach Techniques Gently: While it is important to teach children proper gardening techniques, don’t expect them to emulate your experienced hands exactly. Guide their gardening, but don’t dictate every step of the way. They will learn through trial and experience just as you did, and while you can share your expertise, let them take ownership of their gardening efforts. If you’re not an expert gardener, not to worry. There are many resources to help you mentor and grow with your child.

Cannabis use in children is certainly a politically and emotionally charged topic. Any evaluation of this should be done through a filter that evaluates both the published empirical data and evidence-based outcomes. The media has recently focused on the plight of poor parents who are caring for children with out-of-control seizure disorders, behavioral issues and even cancer.

For a subset of these children, current pharmaceutical and procedural modalities have been exhausted and/or intolerable by the patients. For those parents who are heartened enough to access cannabis for their children, many have found great relief for their child’s condition.

A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine evaluated the role of cannabinoids in Dravet Syndrome, a complex childhood epilepsy disorder associated with drug-resistant seizures and a high mortality rate. Overall, results demonstrated that those treated with cannabis had their seizure activity over a month’s time cut in half. On the flip side, a few adverse events including diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, pyrexia, somnolence and abnormal results on liver-function tests were seen in the group treated with cannabis.

For children plagued with cancer, deemed terminal, parents find hope in animal studies where cannabinoids are shown to inhibit tumor growth, cause cancer cells to remit (via a process called apoptosis), inhibit metastasis and inhibit growth of new blood vessels in tumors. On top of those direct mechanisms, cannabinoids have also been shown to enhance the effects of certain chemotherapeutic agents.

Currently, work in the United Kingdom is underway to see the effects of cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive cannabinoid-based ingredient in marijuana. This was prompted by a growing number of parents giving it to their children with brain

tumors, which were being treated at the local pediatric oncology center. The lead researcher, Professor Richard Grundy of Nottingham University’s Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre, said in the last 6 months there had been a surge in parents administering it without medical advice in the belief it might help. There is a multitude of anecdotal evidence that these children were finding responses by combining CBD with other supportive care.

UNSATISFIED?

It would be naïve to say that the use of cannabis in children is not without its drawbacks. Some neuroscientists believe early cannabis use can effect learning capacity and limit ambition in children who regularly consume cannabis with THC.

MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT.

Current research available shows that cannabis use during adolescence can predict the level of education completed later on. However, many other factors making some young people more likely to use cannabis earlier on than others, such as family history or even psychological, economic or educational difficulties, were not taken into account in the studies to date, and a number of new case studies are currently being conducted.

FIND OUT WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT.

A recent study, which involved looking at more than 1,000 people consuming cannabis in childhood, was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology. It demonstrated the following: • • • •

By taking the age and sex of the participants into account, early consumers are more likely not to obtain a high school diploma, compared to non–users.

By taking individual and family traits likely to predict early cannabis use into account, the association is slightly lower but remains statistically significant.

Young people who began using cannabis after 17 have earned a diploma at a level comparable to non–users.

Early cannabis use and level of education appear to be more strongly related in young girls than in young boys.

This study does support findings that early cannabis use in children may lead to less scholarly achievement.

In emergency rooms, there has been a slight uptick in cases of marijuana overdoses in children. This is notable in states where cannabis has been made legal for adult access.

Just like with alcohol, sometimes children find their way to consuming cannabis. This is particularly true with the edible forms of cannabis, which cannot be distinguished from regular sweets like cookies, gummy bears and hard candy, which is quickly changing in the legal access states with stricter packaging, advertising, production and labeling requirements becoming enacted into law.

Overall, the long-term effects of acute and chronic marijuana exposures on children are unknown, as they have not been thoroughly studied. Because there is lack of sufficient research and scientific findings, doctors do not fully understand marijuana’s long-term effects on children after acute exposures. It is advised that cannabis should always be treated like a medicine. If any parent out there wishes to treat their child with it, they should consult a physician who is experienced both with caring for children and with cannabis as a medicine. Many parents have shared their cannabis success stories through online forums and blogs as well, which can always help during the due diligence process.

against acute infection, human milk components appear to prevent a host of chronic diseases as well. These benefits to the child have been reported through research to include type 1 and 2 diabetes, celiac disease, childhood obesity, asthma, allergies, infectious morbidity, Multiple Sclerosis, Leukemia, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), heart disease and Crohn’s disease, and even more are being studied. So, what are the experts saying? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, continuing at least through the infant’s first birthday, and as long thereafter as is mutually desired. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 2 years of breastfeeding for all infants.

The benefits for extended breastfeeding are immense and range from kids eating a wider variety of foods to an improved immune system. Nursing a toddler still provides a multitude of benefits and improves overall health of the mother and child. I am often contacted (as an IBCLC and a mother who nursed her toddler) by friends who ask, in secret, “Is it okay that I keep nursing even though my child tuned one?” Family and provider support can be good up until that first birthday, but quickly taper off as time goes on. Finding a provider who acknowledges the benefits of extended breastfeeding is critical to success, and we are in luck that the research is there to support the continued health benefits.

Studies show most moms start out wanting to breastfeed. Around 80 percent of moms will initiate breastfeeding, but the 2016 CDC Report Card shows numbers drop to about 25 percent by 6 months for exclusive breastfeeding. Lack of support and up-todate breastfeeding education are often contributing factors. Seeking skilled help early on from an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) when things are not going well and finding a local support person or group are key to success.

COLIC, FEVERS AND BUG BITES, OH MY! ESSENTIAL OILS AND THEIR ROLE IN PROMOTING CHILDREN’S HEALTH

A great combination for colds includes rosemary, sage and thyme. Combine these oils with a carrier oil and rub gently into the chest – this, too, will open the airways. My personal favorite for any congestion problem is an oil called Tei Fu. Even those with asthma have found it to be of great help.

Fevers Fevers are always a worry when a young child is concerned. Please consult a doctor if the fever is very high, or if it lasts more than one day. Bergamot, lemon or peppermint oils can be used to reduce a fever, along with eucalyptus, ginger, rosemary or thyme.

Falls and Boo-Boos Then, there are the inevitable falls and boo-boos. Wounds and cuts can benefit greatly by using diluted tea tree oil directly on the cut. This helps to prevent infection and promote faster wound healing. Chamomile can also be used in this way.

Essential oils are truly effective in treating the ailments and illnesses that are so prevalent in childhood and, as an added bonus, they help optimize our health and protect our environment. Listed below are essential oils remedies to help safely treat health issues that can often bother your little ones: Colic Babies often end up with a bad case of colic, and chamomile, rosemary and thyme are well-known oils to help relieve the pain. Rubbing diluted chamomile on their feet or on their abdomen, along with adding some rosemary or thyme, will help to quell the pain. Also, putting a drop or two of peppermint or sage in a bottle of water will help to calm them down.

Colds Eucalyptus will help to open the airways, as well as peppermint, wintergreen and spearmint.

Bug Bites This summer, we could be faced with numerous bug bites and stings. Tea tree, rosemary or cinnamon can be used on wasp stings. Bergamot, chamomile or eucalyptus help to soothe bites. Patchouli has sometimes been used as an antidote for snake and insect bites. And, lavender can be used to counter the poison of bites and stings.

But, to be really safe, let’s nip those bugs in the bud and use some repellents. Citronella works great in a diffuser or as a candle. Clove is another oil that will keep the bugs away.

Usually, the answer is, “I don’t care.” The reason is they just know they are doing fine and don’t really think of the future and consequences poor eating habits have on their health. Even as a Registered Dietitian, my own children battle with me but I know one day they will say, “Mom was right.” At least, I hope. Today, childhood obesity is so prevalent and many children are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and other medical issues at a young age. The best we can do is encourage our children to make good choices, and here are some of the ways we can accomplish this task: Have regularly scheduled family meals: Children like the predictability of having family meals, and parents also get some time to catch up and learn what’s going on in his/ her daily life. Kids who do sit down with their family tend to eat more fruits/veggies and snack less on unhealthy foods. Parents also get to serve as role models when preparing healthy meals. Make meal time a calm, happy place and not one with lecturing and arguing.

We all have crazy schedules, so I do hear often that heading for the fast food drive-through is a standard practice for many families.

Food planning and preparation is key. Take a Sunday to prepare healthy meals for the week, and encourage the kids to help with menu planning. This will help you avoid the fast food trap, cut down on eating out and save money.

Stock the house with healthy foods. Fill your kitchen with fruits and vegetables, and even cut and bag these foods to make them more accessible for those lazy eaters. When shopping, choose whole grain breads and cereals, non-fat or low-fat dairy products and limit the use of sugary drinks such as soda, juice and sports drinks (unless your child is really working hard outdoors and in sports, and needs those electrolytes replaced). Make easy-to-grab snack combinations such as whole grain crackers paired with low-fat cheese, or peanut butter and apples.

Be a role model for your child. If we model good habits, our children are more likely to follow. If we as parents only serve fried foods and chips, then that is what our children will eat and grow up to eat.

Don’t battle over food. Give children some control in decision making, but still limit some of those food items in the house. Also, don’t try to bribe children with food (such as offering them dessert if they eat their meal). Avoid forcing kids to finish everything on their plates, and don’t use food as a way to show love. Instead, give them affection, time or praise.

What if you have a picky eater and you are extremely frustrated? How can you deal with this issue? Some kids will only eat one food at a time, or will not accept certain textures or new tastes. Try to present a food 10-15 times before giving up. Encourage your child to try new foods, but don’t force them and create more stress and anxiety. Try putting foods in new shapes with cookie cutters, or presenting the food in a more interesting way.

However, try not to get into working as a short order cook for your child. Making multiple meals gets very old, and kids will take advantage of the situation knowing that mom or dad will make them a special food item (which may stop them from trying new foods).

Lastly, encourage daily activity for your child. Our children today lead much more sedentary lifestyles due to the influence of new technology. Finding some things you may like to do as a family such as hiking, biking or swimming can get everyone outside and having fun. Our children are our future, so let’s do everything we can to encourage healthy eating and exercise.

7 TIPS FOR COMBATING ADOLESCENT ACNE, NATURALLY

By Joyce Pontillas, N.D. Teenagers go through hormonal changes during puberty. This is the time when hormones called androgens increase the production of sebum (oil) from the sebaceous glands. These glands are found just beneath the surface of the skin on the face, back and chest. When these glands become clogged with oil and dead skin, the glands become inflamed causing acne, blackheads and whiteheads. Teens will experience some form of acne no matter what. The following are helpful tips in preventing acne from getting worse and becoming acne scars: 1. Diet. “Diet is the answer to the acne problem,” says Dr. Gustave H. Hoehn, M.D., author of “Acne Can Be Cured.” Avoid and, if possible, eliminate chocolate, soda, salted nuts, oily foods, processed foods, TV dinners, animal fats, fried foods, sweets and any foods with chemical additives and preservatives.

2. Sleep. Teens are at the stage of active growth.

Their bodies are going through many chemical reactions from childhood to adulthood. Lack of sleep causes havoc within the hormones and hormone imbalance will cause acne.

3. Hygiene. Acne is caused by bacteria, most commonly P. acnes bacteria. Cleansing with gentle and mild cleansers morning and night will prevent acne buildup.

4. Exfoliate. Removing dead skin will prevent the pores from being clogged. Let the skin “breathe” at night after exfoliating rather than applying it with a night cream.

5. Toners. Use toner after cleansing. Toners are useful in removing any residue to brighten and refresh the face. Witch hazel as a toner acts as an antiseptic on acne bacteria.

6. Moisturize. Use moisturizers with natural ingredients, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Products with chemicals, additives and parabens can cause the acne to worsen. Non-allergenic and non-comedogenic products are recommended.

7. Nutrition therapy. Teens with acne could benefit from taking zinc and homeopathic remedies based on the type of acne.

Sun protection is key to preventing skin damage and skin cancer. To keep skin protected, look for an SPF20 of mineralbased sunscreen with a blend of titanium and zinc oxide fillers. This offers a broadspectrum protection against UV light.

Mineral-based sunscreen is recommend for children and those with sensitive skin. Avoid sunscreens with synthetic chemicals such as cinnamate and benzophenone. SPF in a moisturizer usually wears off by lunchtime.

THE TOOTH THAT BITES BACK HIDDEN DENTAL INFECTIONS AND SERIOUS DISEASE

German biological dentists have tagged root canaled teeth with the moniker of a corpse in the attic. It seems perfectly logical, they are dead. The root canal procedure removes the arteries, veins, lymphatics and nerves leaving the tooth dead and defenseless against invading bacteria and other microbes. They are generally asymptomatic, no nerves left intact. In one of his milestone books, “The Toxic Tooth ,” Thomas Levy, M.D., J.D., presents powerful data connecting root canaled teeth and chronic apical periodontitis (infections around the root of the tooth) with cancer of the head, neck, chest and breasts as well as coronary artery disease and heart attacks. Root canaled related bacteria were also found in a majority of patients with brain aneurysms. The famous cancer physician, Josef Issels, found that 98 percent of his cancer patients had between 2-10 root canaled teeth. He always extracted the root canaled teeth first and his cancer survival rates were exceptional.

Root canaled (dead) and infected teeth have hundreds of different bacteria living in them and secrete powerful toxins that inhibit ATP (the body’s energy currency) manufacturing in the mitochondria, the trillions of energy generators in our cells. These lesions are sometimes painful, infected, dead bone in the jaws from chronic infections, but they can also be asymptomatic. A client jokingly called me Dr. Sardines, as I tell people starting out that you don’t have to be a chef to throw some foods in a crockpot, and sometimes we’ll start with one diet alteration — it’s sometimes sardines. Just by adding 1/2 a sardine (medium sized dog) to your pet’s food everyday, your pet will love the change! Clients are often surprised at the positive changes they see in their pets even with small changes to the diet.

When did you notice that balanced nutrition is one of the key factors in pet health?

There are so many talented veterinarians in our area practicing conventional medicine very well. We are fortunate to have a wonderful veterinary community. But, there aren’t that many people who can incorporate herbs into a pet’s treatment, and who can talk about foods. I veered more and more toward nutrition because I noticed that people who are more willing to change their pet’s diet have the healthiest pets. Hands down. Holistic medicine focuses on the whole being, not just the body part(s) that may be sick. When you look at the whole picture of a pet’s health, you can truly find the cause of an ailment. It all ties in – you have to treat the root of the problem, and the branches start to resolve as you chip away at that root. I take a holistic approach to your pet’s health, and work with their vet to ensure that all wellness needs are assessed and met. Pets are part of the family now, and they are our best friends. How can we enhance our relationship with them while maximizing their health? By adding a holistic approach to their care. For some dogs that just means some subtle diet changes. To others that means weekly laser, acupuncture or other modalities we decide upon together at the time we meet. Every pet is different, so every pet is treated like an individual.

What types of ailments can you treat holistically?

Pain and inflammation, cancer, metabolic, kidney and liver diseases, arthritis and degenerative joint disease, and many other health complications can benefit from a whole foods diet. Even the most healthy pets can gain optimum wellness from a whole foods diet, too. I work with pets undergoing conventional treatments to ensure that the food and herbs are compatible with the pet’s medications, etc. Specifically, metabolic, kidney and liver disease are huge in cats and dogs. Kidney failure is extremely common in cats, and is on the rise in dogs.

Nutrition allows you to play an active role in treating these diseases. I’m not doing the cooking and feeding for you and your pet – I counsel you so that you can do it yourself.

This helps you know that you’re doing everything you can to optimize your pet’s health – from laser therapy to acupuncture to cooking some cool foods. And, food therapy is individualized to each pet – sometimes a dog will go home with a recipe with 30 ingredients, sometimes it will be two ingredients.

If my pet’s nutritional needs are met with dry kibble, why should I consider a whole foods diet?

If your pet is eating processed food, their nutritional needs could very well be met. But, are you optimizing their health and performance? Processed foods on paper might be nutritionally complete, but how digestible are they? How much are they adding to your pet’s wellness, or are they just keeping your pet alive? We’re used to just being alive, we’re used to feeling low energy, we’re used to not thriving. Eating live foods that are bio digestible – meaning that the body can use the materials in that food very efficiently to convert food into energy – optimize wellness. IS ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE TYPE 3 DIABETES?

dynamic that took the biggest hit. We couldn’t deny it anymore. Aunt Lib had dementia.

Later, I asked her doctor if he thought that her blood sugar, which at that point was out of control for at least 5 years before “The Accident,” had anything to do with her condition.

The conventional wisdom of the time, and even in some circles today, was summed up his response, “You young people are crazy. Sugar diabetes has nothing to do with the brain, and what you eat has nothing to do with the brain or sugar diabetes, for that matter.”

Er. Sorry to say, doc, you were wrong then and now.

So, what is dementia? “Dementia” describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with daily functioning.

Symptoms of dementia include subtle short-term memory changes, difficulty finding the right words, mood changes, apathy, difficulty in completing routine tasks and following storylines, confusion and a failing sense of direction.

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia leading to memory, thinking and behavior issues.

Aunt Libby was the larger than life, gregarious, fun character every family craves. And, at 6’ 2” tall, did everything big. Her dresses were big, her shoes were big, her car, a Cadillac, of course, was big, and her 1960s bouffant hairdo was big. Aunt Lib was a gourmand. She loved to eat. By the time I entered high school, Aunt Lib grew to 302 pounds. At graduation, she was maybe 340 pounds, and let it be known that she had “sugar diabetes.”

In the months leading to this pronouncement, we’d noticed she drank 3 or 4 glasses of ice tea loaded with her usual five packs of sugar in each glass. Then, she disappeared to the bathroom over and over again.

After I left for college and, when I came home for holiday breaks, I noticed things that the rest of the family – who saw her every day – missed. Aunt Lib dumped the coffee grounds from her morning coffee in the washing machine. We found her ice tea in the freezer in plastic cups.

Aunt Lib, from the time I could remember, had a wine cooler filled with dozens of bottles of champagne. A visit to her always included at least an offer of her latest find. Visiting her the summer of my junior year, her “happy juice” refrigerator was empty. I made a mistake by asking her about it.

Is there a connection between Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes?

Although it took “medical science” years to catch up, our family immediately spotted the connection between Aunt Libby’s uncontrolled diabetes and her deteriorating mental state.

Now, the evidence is overwhelming.

As we’ve shared in previous articles, high blood sugar is not the cause, but the effect of insulin resistance. Like an alcoholic needing more and more booze to get the same “high,” if we bombard our body with more and more sugar, in the form of simple carbohydrates, we develop an immunity of sorts to insulin’s effect. The result is persistent hyperglycemia or diabetes.

Diabetes, in turn, has a direct affect on the brain: 1.

Referring to Alzheimer’s disease as Type 3 diabetes is justified because the underlying abnormalities of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 and Type 2 overlap rather than mimic the effects of either one.

Perhaps it’s health or wellness for mom and baby, but most likely these two words pop in your mind: “free food.” While the title literally means “Women, Infants and Children,” there are a lot of misconceptions about what this program actually provides.

WIC is one of the largest providers of breastfeeding peer counseling services, as well as nutritional services. WIC exists to ensure mom and baby are also getting fed whole, nutritious foods, and provides nutrition resources and information to help families encourage and implement healthy lifestyles for their children.

Lack of access to transportation can be another huge barrier for some clients, that’s why the organization has seven local clinics that serve 4,500 clients annually, as well as a mobile clinic.

“We’re proud of our staff getting the highest rates of breastfeeding in the entire state of Nevada for the third year in a row," said Katie Damon, CHA WIC manager. “This has to do with all the services we offer new moms and families, as well as the dedication of our highly qualified staff. It’s a team effort, and our staff do it well.”

CHA’s WIC program wants every woman eligible to have access to all that WIC has to offer.

That’s why the organization’s representatives are in hospitals as soon as babies are born – to provide bedside enrollment in WIC for those eligible.

CHA’s WIC program also invests in local partnerships and, during the summer months, partners with local farmers markets to provide vouchers for families so that they can have access to local, nutritious fresh fruits and veggies, all while supporting community farmers.

BEYOND BAD BEHAVIOR

NUTRIENTS AND YOUR CHILD’S BRAIN FUNCTION – THE ANSWER TO MANY PARENTAL CHALLENGES

By Van Harding, LAc Being a parent sometimes requires being a detective. It’s not so much about the question, “What did my kid do that was bad?”, but, “Why?” It’s only when we answer the why that we can do something about it. Today when a child’s behavior seems problematic, the investigation begins with psychoanalysis, often causing an unrewarding journey down a rabbit hole leaving parent and child stuck in frustration. If psychoanalysis and cognitive behavior modification does not have the solution, what does? Get ready, the answer is a mouthful: psycho-neuro-endocrineimmunology, audio processing, sensory integration, neuron timing and brain region synchronization. Whew – that’s a lot, but what does this mean? Is my child going to be in a research laboratory? Fortunately no, and a simpler name for this is neurotherapy for the brain, mind and emotions.

Let’s step away from the scientific jargon and look at what can be contributing to the bad behavior. Think of a car – when it does not start we ask: Does it have gas? Is the battery charged? Is the starter working? Is there a problem with the ignition key? All of those components have to be working in a specific sequence in order for the car to start. The same is true of the brain so that it can support our mind and emotions.

Let me lay some ground work so we can understand how behavior and emotions arise from poor brain function absent of a disease process or injury. As well, there is an important intersection of neurophysiology and self-image at the basis of many frustrated and angry children, which has a solution.

self-control may be missing the nutrients for their brain to produce enough GABA. Both the switching on and off of neurons can be interfered with or prevented by inflammation on the brain. Today, our processed foods are filled with additives and preservatives that can cause inflammation. Another source of brain inflammation are new food sensitivities and intolerances such as gluten and dairy. MSG can cause neurons to be hyper-excitable and remain on until the neuron dies – hence you’re stuck in that action until its death.

Neuro-Networks are the Roadway of Repeated Behavior We’ve all done it… practice, practice and more practice to learn how to do something.

The hours on the piano keys, pitching mound, golf tee or math equations are necessary to connect the neurons that build the ‘neuro-network’ so we can do things on autopilot, or exactly repeat the action.

To build neuro-networks the neuron must be able to ‘switch on’ to connect to each other, hence learning anything can be very difficult if there are nutrient deficiencies.

Building memories requires the construction of neuro-pathways into specific regions in the brain dependent upon the brain’s ability to manufacture the NT acetylcholine.

Could your child’s difficulty learning – placing information into memory – be due to a lack of acetylcholine?

All automatic repeated behaviors have neuro-networks, along with our emotional states. A child that repeats an emotion will build that neuro-network and have the propensity to repeat that emotion when under duress. No need to think that your child is doomed to a destiny of bad behavior or dysfunctional emotional states. The reason is this – those neuro-connections can be lost – “If you don’t use it, you will lose it!”

Energy: Moodiness, Depression and Lack of Motivation The brain needs energy. Most of us know that when blood sugar drops, we become irritable. So, you eat and within a few minutes you become calm and more rational.

However, a continuous influx of energy due to inconsistent food intake (or intake of the wrong foods) can significantly impair brain function, particularly during a child’s growth years. This can cause mood swings and mental fatigue, which has the appearance of depression or lack of motivation.

Neurons Need Nutrients to Switch Off ADD, ADHD and OCD Nutrients are critical for proper neuron function and some brains need more than our regular diet can provide. Many neurons are hanging around waiting to be activated and then something happens in our body or mind: we move a hand, recall a memory, read words or solve a math problem. If the neuron does not switch off, our hand might stay clenched or we may remain hypervigilant after being startled by a loud noise or the fear of failure. The medical labels are ‘hand spasm’ and ‘anxiety’ respectively and the medical treatment is a medication to alleviate the symptoms. The real diagnosis of what’s occurring is “failed methylation” meaning the neuron was activated but its ‘on switch’ is stuck in the ‘on’ position and the treatment is the administration of the necessary nutrients (methylators like vitamin B and magnesium, to name a few) to switch the neuron ‘off’ and the result being a relaxed hand and alleviation of anxiety.

IS IT A HEADACHE?

Migraine: Definition The migraine headache is often described as sudden and strong. It is pounding and pulsating and concentrated at the front, and on only one side of the head.

Physical activity or even a little movement can worsen a migraine, and individuals with migraines may experience extreme sensitivity to sound and light. This heightened sensitivity is one of the main differences between migraines and other types of headaches.

OR, DO YOU HAVE A MIGRAINE?

Migraine: Recent Statistics Some people have only occasional migraines, while others may have them every month for several days at a time. If left untreated, they can last between 4 hours and 3 days in adolescents and adults. They usually go away quicker in younger children.

Women have more migraines than men. Most people experience episodic migraines; that is, they occur occasionally and at irregular intervals. It is rare for migraine attacks to become chronic, defined as experiencing a migraine for more than 15 days every month.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of a Possible Migraine?

• Some people may see things as blurry or in wavy lines. They may experience flashing lights or strange shapes. They may also experience tingling; called “auras,” these sensations usually go away after about an hour.

• Other temporary symptoms may be paralysis and trouble speaking.

• Nausea and vomiting are also symptoms.

In fact, the tension headache is cited as our most common source of pain. According to recent statistics, most children will experience a headache by age 15, and nine in 10 adults experience headaches.

These headaches may come on slowly and may feel like constant pressure is being applied to the front of the face, head or neck. The cluster headache is more severe and can be sudden and very painful. They occur at the same time each day or night.

What Are the Causes of a Migraine?

Other recent studies have shown that people affected by migraines with “auras” are at roughly double the risk of experiencing Ischemic stroke (the most common type of stroke). Therefore, the importance of identifying and treating migraines with “auras” cannot be understated.

3 STRATEGIES TO SHAPE YOUR CHILD’S HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, TOGETHER

Parents often tell me they want to be positive role models in passing along good health behaviors to their children. Parents want to equip their children with knowledge that will help them make smart healthy choices before they venture out into the world on their own.

But, telling your kids what they “have to” eat or trying to entice them to eat vegetables because they’re “healthy” isn’t exactly motivating.

How can you encourage your children to enjoy and practice healthful habits? By making it fun and involving them more. I recommend letting kids contribute to the meal planning, grocery shopping and even the cooking process.

To get started, here are some quick helpful ideas – and there are plenty more.

Meal Planning: Pull out your favorite cookbook of healthy recipes and let your kids pick out what goes on the menu, it’s helpful if the cookbook has colorful pictures. They’ll be excited when the picture in the cookbook becomes real on the kitchen table.

Grocery Shopping Ideas: Let kids help create the grocery list. Consider having some fun with the list while at the grocery store, you can turn it into a scavenger hunt or assign certain items for your children to be in charge of. This might help take some of the boredom out of grocery shopping for your kids. Allow them to pick out one colorful fruit or vegetable that looks appetizing – one they’ve never tried before.

THE DREAMS OF A DYING WOMAN, PART 2

By Andy Drymalski, Ed.D. In last month’s article, I shared the dreams of a woman in her early 70s who was dying of cancer. At the time of the dreams she was unaware that she was ill. Nonetheless, the dreams hinted at an unfolding death process that is further elaborated upon by the following.

I’ve gone to a thrift store to visit some people. As I walk down the center aisle a white doll-like object falls on the floor. I pick it up and continue walking ‘til I come to a woman in a bed off to the right. She is a happy woman I don’t know, but she sets the doll on a revolving table next to her bed. The doll lights up, a beautiful soft light of soothing colors, and I see it is an angel. I go down the aisle further and come to little cubicles with big windows and doors. The curtains are open and I recognize my mother. I wave and start to go in, but she waves me away and rolls over with her back to me. I continue past others ‘til I see a man sitting up in bed. He is all smiles and waves to me. I walk closer to the window and see that it is my dad.

This dream occurred 2 months before Lila’s (not her actual name) diagnosis and 4 months before her death. Both of Lila’s parents were dead at the time of the dream, her father for 7 years and her mother for 2. Now, most dreams of deceased people do not represent visitations or omens of one’s own death. Often, the deceased represent aspects of your own personality that are similar to them. At other times the dead may symbolize guides or messengers from the unconscious, for the unconscious and the spirit world are closely linked. This particular dream, however, has a tone suggestive of a visitation. Although it accurately portrays her parents and her relationship with them, the dream did not mesh with the conscious concerns and events of her life at the time. It came “out of the blue” so to speak, and did not reflect Lila’s known psychological process.

In addition, the dream mentions an older woman similar to the woman that appeared in a dream discussed in the first article of this series. That woman was on a gurney trying to find her way home. Here we have another older woman – perhaps the same woman – on a bed. Lila gives the woman a doll, which when placed on a rotating pedestal emits soft, colorful lights. Lila recognizes the doll to be the figure of an angel. An angel is a symbol of the spiritual realm and of the Self (personality core) reflected, in this case, by its soothing, centering effect upon the dreamer. The colored light motif is interesting because it is repeated in the following dream, which Lila had a month before her diagnosis.

I catch a glimpse of bundles of beautiful colors very neatly grouped. Very pleasing. Edges not sharp and sizes unknown, but wonderful soft colors. Lots of color!

Jungian psychologist Marie-Louisevon Franz points out that the image of colored lights is frequently witnessed by individuals undergoing a near-death experience (NDE). She shares the following NDE of a woman passing through a tunnel into the unknown:

I had to search for my escort somewhere in there, where the dark blue grew toward me from the opening of this tunnel. The hum became brighter and more beautiful. The colors, too, became clearer and seemed to merge into a game of a thousand colorful shades, and then fall apart again like the colors in a bouquet. Every color had a sound. And all those colors and sounds together produced a wonderful music, which filled me and drew me forward.

For people nearing death, beautiful and soothing colors in a dream can be an intimation of union with the Self, the healing center of the personality.

Another interesting aspect of the dream is its infirmary-like setting. Although Lila says she is going to a thrift store (a place where she used to work) to visit friends, the people she sees there are lying on beds within separate cubicles. The impression is given that this is a kind of convalescent center. Many psychics believe that following death, spirits of the departed undergo a period of rest and recovery in what are called “Halls of Healing.” The dreams may suggest that Lila, unbeknownst to herself, is moving closer to her own union with the Beyond, and that she may soon be reunited with the people that brought her into the world and who greatly influenced her psychology. In a way, her life is coming full circle.

CONNECTION BETWEEN INVESTIGATING THE ELEMENTS: THE ASTROLOGY AND YOUR HEALTH One of the most important areas within the study of the stars is the investigation of the four elements – earth, air, fire and water. We are told that these four elements are the building blocks of creation. In Ezekiel’s vision of the throne of the Supreme Being, we are introduced to the Four Holy Animals, the Chayoth ha Chodesh. These four animals –the Bull, the Lion, the Eagle, and the Man – surround the throne of God. These animals symbolically represent the four fixed signs of the zodiac: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Each sign of the zodiac has an elemental rulership of earth, air, fire or water. Each of these four fixed signs is connected with one of these four elements.

Taurus is fixed earth; Leo is fixed fire; Scorpio is fixed water and Aquarius is fixed air.

Fixed signs embody the force or power of love. Love expresses as desire, so we find that the elements are permeated by the energy of love, desire and attraction.

It is at the level of the earthy, dense, physical dimension that the elements play their most significant role. With the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the tenth and lowest Sephiroth is a sphere divided into four parts. These four parts represent the primary rulership of the elements. When we examine the human being, we will discover that the four elements play a significant role. We are conditioned by these elements.

In looking at our natal chart, we find that one of the basic pieces of information that is extrapolated from the horoscope is the balance of the elements. There will be a list of the elements, and which of your natal planets are in which element. There is also a weighted score, with a numerical value, showing the strength or weakness of that element in your total make up. Generally, most people have one or two elements that are stronger than the others.

You want to make a note of your strongest and weakest elements. This is important information. Determine whether you are more fiery, watery, earthy or airy. These each relate to an emphasis of specific types of consciousness. Fire corresponds with spirit,

which is passionate; air corresponds to mind, which is reason; water corresponds with soul, which is love; and earth corresponds to the body, which is will.

The ancients related the elements to the health of the human being and called them the humors. The analysis of the humors was a fundamental part of a physician’s approach to healing, up to the beginning of the 1700s. From that point, a non-spiritual paradigm for healing grew to dominance. It is not a consideration today, except in the Ayurvedic medicine of India. It is something that needs to be re-investigated intelligently now. It can provide answers to situations that are difficult to diagnose.

The ancient doctors and healers that were established in the star wisdom identified four types of personality based on the balance of the elements within the individual. These four humors are believed to be related to subtle functioning of the bodily system. The dominance of the fire element results in a choleric disposition; the air element expresses as a sanguine disposition; the water element manifests as a phlegmatic disposition; and the earth element expresses as a melancholic disposition. These are distinctively different principles, elements and vibrational frequencies influencing the well-being of the bodily constitution.

For true health at every level of our being, we are striving for perfect balance between these elemental forces and principles. Postural, structural and functional problems in children can be addressed by the manual therapy method known as Rolfing, which was developed by Ph.D. Ida Rolf in the 1950s. It is a therapy that deeply works with the organizing and underlying fascia or connective tissues in the body. Many of the problems that children experience have a possible solution in this unique hands-on therapy.

Scoliosis Scoliosis, or a spine that is pulled off to one side or the other, affects girls more often than boys but, in both instances, can be a permanent and difficult lifetime structural problem.

Once we reach the ages 18-22 our bones, which have been growing and changing rapidly, begin to ossify and set their permanent position. Once this has happened, scoliosis is especially hard to correct. But while people are young the tissues and bone are still very malleable and changeable, giving an opportunity to correct what would otherwise be a permanent condition.

Scoliosis is often noticed or detected from 10-114 years old, this is also an optimal time to correct this condition. Fascia is the tough fibrous material that holds our muscles and organs together. In scoliosis, the muscle called quadratus lumborum m (QL) deep in the low back on one side becomes fixed and does not grow or lengthen with the growth of the child. This begins to pull at the sppine to that side, deforming the spinal column. Rolfinng has the potential to break up the adhesions in thhis critical muscle, allowing the muscle to lengthen properly and the spine to grow in its natural straight form. Thhere is a small window of opportunity with children to coorrect this misalignment while the tissues are most pliablee. It is a critical time to take action.
