COVERSTORY Written By Dawn Gowery

hether your vacation takes you a long distance from home or you are planning to stay close to home, where there are so many beautiful places in our backyard, the Lake Tahoe region, I wish you a happy and healthy summer. Last month I spent a week with my three granddaughters at Granlibakken Conference Center and Lodge in Tahoe City, CA just a mile from Lake Tahoe and only a forty-five minute drive from Reno, NV. The contrast of colors, atmosphere and geographic terrain, compared to Reno makes one feel as though they are far from home. Granlibakken is well known as a Conference Center yet it is also a very family friendly vacation destination.

he July cover represents the colors of the American Flag. It is that time of year when we celebrate the heritage of our great country. We honor and recognize the price we have paid as a nation to maintain our greatest liberty of all freedom.
My fifteen year old granddaughter Ariana raved about their meals, Executive Chef Ron Eber and Dinner Chef Gene Roberts have been serving gourmet meals at Granlibakken for three decades. Ariana is a vegetarian and she was so pleased that with each meal she had several vegetarian signature entrees and side dishes.
The constitution was carefully drafted to protect a free people’s rights: freedom of speech, the right to privacy, the right to protect oneself and property, the pursuit of prosperity and freedoms from religious persecution. These are the founding principles that our forefathers thought so important and critical, as they valued individual rights which created an empowered environment where each citizen could contribute to the whole. Being accountable for their actions and in doing so, live productive purposeful and meaningful lives.
Aramia and Bella, the six and half year old twins, found the meals also delicious. They are were so excited to go swimming two times a day if that was their desire. All of us enjoyed Tahoe Tree Top Adventure Park, it is an aerial adventure park with 70 plus platforms, aerial rope and walkway challenge course and of course zip lining. Read Kid’s corner to learn more. We also rafted the Truckee River, walked, biked, hiked and just lounged enjoying each other’s company.
As we go forward as a nation, I would hope that we all understand that living by these principals are more important to the whole, than the feelings of any one individual, minority group or political party; that we come together as a nation of American citizens to preserve and protect our indelible rights that have made us the greatest country for over 235 years.
Health isn’t just about what you eat and physical issues, our health can be adversely affected if we never take the time to decompress to relax with family and friends. Enjoy reading our July issue. We have devoted many pages to various healing modalities for cancer. Don’t forget to take some time to this summer to enjoy your life.
Happy 4th of July!

CHRONIC DEHYDRATION Part 11 - It Sets the Stage for Cancer Written by JeanAnn Fitzgerald Reprinted with author’s permission

ithout oxygen you can survive for only a few minutes. Without water, survival is limited to a few weeks or even days. But you can go several months without food. This makes oxygen and water the two prime elements for life. No one has to tell us to breathe oxygen because the autonomic nervous system makes us do it. But drinking water is a conscious decision we must all make to keep our bodies healthy and cancer-free when we add salt and potassium to prevent dehydration.
respiration and use sugar fermentation for energy whereas healthy cells thrive in an aerobic (with oxygen) environment using protein for energy. Dr. Warburg could cause or cure cancer by changing the oxygen-carrying ability of the blood by using acid to force out oxygen, or alkalinity to force in oxygen. Due to fermentation, he reported cancer cells maintain a pH level as low as 6.0 (acidic) due to lactic acid production and elevated CO2.
Normal body cells function by bringing in nutrients and flushing out toxins, grow old, and then die so young cells can replace them. They have personality, culture, and are members of the team. Cancer cells are dangerous because they have lost their social skills, are primitive, selfish, invasive, have uncontrolled growth and reproduction, disrupt normal body functions, and monopolize the body’s resources. It has long been established that cancer thrives in a low-oxygen and acidic environment. Dr. Otto Warburg was nominated an unprecedented three times for the Nobel prize for different researches, and won in 1931. In 1924 he concluded that cancer cells grow due to anaerobic (without oxygen)

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

The Indians of Central America, Peru, and Ecuador enjoy low incidence of cancer also. Area soil is volcanic so their fruit is very high in rubidium and cesium. Cases have been reliably reported that people with advanced inoperable cancer who have lived with these Indians have had their tumors disappear within a few months.
Chronic Deydration Part 11 Continued from Page 5
Rather than having to endure any cancer treatment, the better plan is not to let the body cells become anaerobic and acidic to begin with. Dr. Feredoon Batmanghelidj provides answers to the question of how the body (environment ) becomes this way for cancer growth in the first place. This medical doctor blames chronic dehydration for the anaerobic and acidic condition of the body.
His proposal to prevent cancer was to keep the speed of the blood so high that it contained sufficient oxygen (enough water = blood volume = speed through the body and oxygen capacity) to keep the hemoglobin (protein + iron) in the blood. This also keeps the vessels dilated so the blood flows freely.
He says there are four events leading to the environment cancer needs to develop and thrive. Event # 1 is when chronic dehydration means there is not enough water, thereby causing a failure to rid the body of toxins created by its own survival processes and brought in from the outside world. Toxins are normally washed away by water; insufficient water means these toxins buildup in the body.
Keith Brewer, PhD, describes cancer tumors as a thin layer of rapidly growing cells surrounding a mass of dead normal cells killed by acid buildup. This acid leaks from the tumor and poisons the cancer patient, resulting in the pain associated with the disease. Brewer says that an alkaline environment with a pH slightly above 7.4, cancer cells become dormant. At 8.5 these cells will die while healthy ones will live on. The closely related minerals potassium, rubidium, and especially cesium are most efficiently absorbed by cancer cells even down to an acidic pH of 6.5, and raise their alkalinity to kill the disease and neutralize the tumor’s acid toxins.
Cancer.gov and cancer.org describe cancer as damage to the genetic material(DNA). Dr. Batmanghelidj lists Event #2 as damage to the cells’ DNA repair system which is initiated by the toxin buildup, and is exacerbated by a state of acidity caused by a lack of water and salt. This acid eats at the cells’ delicate structure causing DNA damage so reproduction is not normal. Amino acids are used as antioxidants against the effects of this acidity and are necessary for DNA quality control and repair, especially the amino acids tryptophan, tyrosine, and lysine.
In tests of 30 humans by Brewer using cesium and rubidium, all their tumors disappeared. Also all pains and effects associated with cancer disappeared within 12-36 hours. H.D. Sartori has used Cesium Chloride to treat 50 cancer patients and had a 50% survival rate.
Event #3 involves the destruction of cell receptors which receive messages from the body regarding how to grow, reproduce, and then die. Without water as its prime source of energy, the dehydrated body looks for another source of energy in its own protein. Cell receptors are protein so they are sacrificed for the greater good. Without message reception, the cells are on their own to become autonomous and lose all conception of their proper space and boundaries. Therefore cells grow into large and irregular masses called benign tumors. If even more energy protein is required by the body, more cell receptors are cannibalized and all communication with the area is lost. These isolated cells regress to their earlier, primitive form without sophistication and an integrated position in the cell community. They are now obedient to their selfish genetic drive to survive and reproduce their mutated selves at any cost.
Dr. Leonard Coldwell also relies on alkalinity for curing cancer. His mother was given six months to live due to Hepatitis C, liver cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Forty-two years later she is still alive due to her son’s cancer protocol. Studies have proven Dr. Coldwell has a 92.3% cancer cure rate of over 35,000 cancer patients. His eleven-point program includes body alkalinity with a pH of 7.36, whole-body detoxification, supplements, eliminating stress, and killing Candida (yeast) overgrowth. The National Institute of Health reports that among leukemia patients, a significant number of deaths are due to Candida infection that plays havoc with the immune system. There exist pockets of humanity across the globe who have low incidences of cancer. Such a group is the Hopi Indians of Arizona who have 1 cancer case in 1,000 as compared to 1 in 4 for the USA as a whole. Hopi food is very high in potassium and exceptionally high in rubidium. Since the soil is volcanic, it must also be very rich in cesium.
Dr Batmanghelidj’s Cause #4 is when excess histamine is released because it is the body’s water manager during dehydration. But histamine also sends the immune system into over-drive. So histamine has to cause an immune system shutdown because there is no need for it: the problem is water shortage, not foreign invasion.
Cancer is virtually unknown among the Hunza of Northern Pakistan. They drink at least 4 liters of mineral spring water which is very rich in cesium, rubidium and potassium,

To shutdown the immune system, histamine sets off a chain reaction: more vasopressin sparks more production of cortisone which in turn causes extra production of Interleukin 1 (ILK-1). The chain reaction continues as ILK1 inhibits the immune system and depresses ILK-2 which would stimulate the immune system. Then histamine also shuts down bone marrow production of white cells needed to destroy abnormal cells. This immune system suppression means there is nothing to halt the cancer progression. These abnormal cells are free to travel to other body localities and new cancer colonies can develop elsewhere.
that water and salt to re-establish a hydrated state reverses the acidic and anaerobic environment, plus reverses Causes #1, #2, #3, and #4. Lorraine Day, M.D. was considered one of mainstream medicine’s most highly qualified physicians--qualified enough to mold the minds of emerging doctors when she taught thousands of them at the top three medical schools in America. Yet when she was diagnosed with a fast growing breast cancer in 1992. She “refused chemotherapy, radiation, and mutilating surgery because, as a medical doctor with years of experience, I saw thousands of cancer patients die, not from their cancer, but from the painful, maiming, destructive treatments we doctors give them!” Because of Dr. Batmanghelidj’s research with water, eight months after adding it to her newly adopted healthy diet, she was pronounced cancer-free and has been for the past 17 years.
Dr. Batmanghelidj believes unintended chronic dehydration is the root cause of all disease, including cancer. He says water is a prime source of energy for the body. He describes salt as a strong natural antihistamine that is vital for the generation of hydro-electrical energy in all body cells, is vital for the kidneys to clear excess acidity and toxins and pass them out through urine, is necessary for intercellular communication, and is a potent anti-stress element. In short, he maintains
With an infected cut on your hand, altering the environment to kill the bacteria can be done by soaking it in warm salt water a few times. It could be preventing and killing cancer cells is as easy as making its environment (your body) inhospitable for cancer by providing the re-hydration components of water plus minerals including the electrolytes salt and potassium which help distribute oxygen and create an alkaline pH.

Say Goodbye to Pain – Naturally! Written By Terry Lemerond

The best curcumin extract is micronized – that is, reduced to a very small size – and blended with turmeric oils. This improves the absorption and blood-retention time dramatically – up to 10 times that of standard extracts. This curcumin inhibits COX-2 enzyme activity and stops cellular damage from free radicals – two things that cause muscle pain and joint damage from exercise.
et’s say you’re in pain after going for a 5-mile runor working in the yard, or even just pulling a muscle reaching for a book on the tallest shelf. If you’re like most people, you’ll probably take an aspirin, ibuprofen or some other over-the-counter painkiller. Even if you’ve heard that they can be bad for your stomach lining and possibly cause serious damage to your heart or liver, you might wonder, “What else am I supposed to do?”
The next ingredient you need for an active life is boswellia (Boswellia serrata). Here again, it’s important to get the best extract. You’ll want a boswellia that screens out much of a compound called “beta-boswellic acid,” because otherwise,
There is a smarter, natural way of relieving pain. It is a combination of ingredients that fight pain quickly and effectively that doesn’t put your health at risk. The first ingredient is curcumin. This amazing compound from turmeric (Curcuma longa), protects you from free radical damage, dramatically reduces inflammation and pain, and is a true “desertisland” ingredient if you had to narrow it down to just one. However, it is truly important that you find the right curcumin, because standard extracts can be difficult for the body to absorb.

Little
Bugs,
Big Messages
Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD
A
young woman who was addicted to drugs developed a paranoia about bugs. Although she had some reason to be wary of bugs—she contracted Lyme disease from a tick and there was a scabies infestation in one of her apartments—her current fears were extreme and unfounded. For example, she was certain that bugs were burrowing into her skin and that lice were making a home in her infant’s ear. Medical examination showed neither to be true, but her beliefs persisted. Sometimes, when God is displeased with our attitudes or approach to life, we will have negative encounters with insects. Often they will appear in our dreams. We may dream of being chased by spiders or of being covered with small beetles that climb into our nose or ears. At other times they may manifest in our outer life: a pestering fly, a swarm of mosquitoes, or the bee that stings you.
her thick skin. God was the voice she didn’t want to hear and so was experienced as lice in the ear of her child. So, the next time you find that a bug is bugging you, perhaps it is because your attitude bugs God. For more info, contact Dr. Andy Drymalski, Reno and Carson City psychologist at phone number (775) 786-3818, or www. renocarsonpsychologist.com. See ad this page.
Why does God use insects to communicate His displeasure? Maybe the answer has more to do with us than with God. When we are going against our true nature and intended path, we see God as a nuisance, an annoyance, a pest. The bugs reflect our attitude towards God. The woman above developed her delusions because she was resisting the call of her deeper self, that part of her that wanted her to get off drugs. She saw God as an enemy trying to find a way through

Being active is wonderful. When the weather is perfect, it’s the time to enjoy camping trips, softball games and weekend afternoons in the backyard. This amazing natural combination of pain-relieving ingredients can help you do just that. It lets you say “hello” to the warm, bright weather and “goodbye” to the pain that keeps you from doing what you love.
the boswellia can actually increase inflammation. So what you’re looking for is a boswellia that sharply reduces inflammation but retains naturally higher levels of another compound, acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA), to really boost the effectiveness of the extract.
Terry Lemerond has over 40 years of experience in the health food industry, both in retail sales and in dietary supplement formulation and manufacturing. Terry is a published author and appears on radio, television, and is a frequent guest speaker. This energy and zeal are simply part of Terry’s mission – as it has been since the beginning of his career – to improve health with the very best that nature and science have to offer.
Boswellia is a perfect partner to curcumin. It blocks inflammation along the 5-LOX pathway and also stops damage to your knees and other joints. In fact, a unique combination of bioavailable curcumin and boswellia was judged to be superior to the prescription arthritis drug, celecoxib (the generic of the brand name Celebrex®), in a clinical study of osteoarthritis.
References: 1. Hatcher H, Planalp R, Cho J, et al. Curcumin … Cell Mol Life Sci 2008;65:1631-1652.).
The curcumin and boswellia combination was better than celecoxib in relieving pain, walking distance and joint line tenderness scores. Not surprisingly, efficacy and tolerability of the herbal combination used in the current study was shown to be superior to those of celecoxib for treating active osteoarthritis. When it came to relieving pain, 64 percent of those taking the herbal ingredients versus 29 percent in the drug group improved to such a high degree that they were able to move from having “moderate to severe arthritis” to “mild to moderate arthritis.” These ingredients are more than powerful pain-relievers – they actually help heal the damage done over time to joints. So even if you haven’t been active for some time, high-absorption curcumin and high-AKBA boswellia can turn that around.

Integrative Cancer Treatment
O
Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.
K so you’ve been diagnosed with cancer. You’ve been told by your Oncologist that your only options are chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Is that true…No! In some cases it may be true, but more and more people are choosing to educate themselves about other options that are available to them. Options that have a proven track record of being able to put the cancer into remission, without killing or causing major damage to normal cells in the process. There are no guarantees in any treatment program but knowing all ones options enables them to make more intelligent choices for themselves. Oncologists are good at what they do, but they are mainly taught about the three major approaches to treating cancer. Some of the research on these other treatments has been done in other countries and some has been done right here in the US but is not widely known. One of the best examples of this is Oxidative therapies. It originated in Germany. In 1931 a German Physician and Scientist, Otto Warburg, M.D., PhD, received a Nobel Prize for proving that all cancer cells use an abnormal means of burning sugar (called anaerobic metabolism) that does not use oxygen. This means of burning sugar is 18 times less efficient at producing a given amount of energy from a given amount of sugar. This is the reason many people have heard “cancer loves sugar”. Well cancer does not “love” sugar, it requires 18 times more sugar than normal cells to grow and prosper. This is proven every day by the use of PET scans to diagnose the spread of cancer to different parts of the body. PET scans (using radioactively tagged sugar molecules administered IV) prove that it is possible to target cancer cells with therapies that can kill or weaken cancer cells and not harm normal cells. Does this mean it is possible to cure your cancer by not eating

sugar…unfortunately no. This is because the brain requires sugar on the same level of intensity as oxygen to survive. However, it does not make sense to consume highly concentrated doses of sugar (candy, milk shakes, ice cream, and cake) because it is like throwing gasoline on a fire! It has been proven (by a Yale University researcher) that the proper diet can have a huge positive impact on the outcome of cancer treatment. It also means that cancer prospers in tissues with low levels of oxygen. Oxidative therapies are designed to deliver higher than normal levels of oxygen (in different forms) to the body in order to boost the immune system and assist in killing the cancer cells. True Integrative Cancer Treatment goes far beyond Yoga, Meditation and Massage. I will list some therapies and discuss them in greater detail in future articles. They include Oxidative Therapy (as noted above-more on this later), IPT (insulin potentiated therapy), UBI (ultraviolet blood irradiation), DCA (dichloroacetate), GcMAF (Macrophage cell Activating Factor), and Heat Shock Proteins. You can wait for the articles or google them to do some research on your own if you wish. Trapped Emotions
... Affect Your Health? Written by Dr. Tony Jensen
W
left alone, they will continue to create problems for you, and you will end up attracting more of that emotion into your life. Trapped emotional energy will always lodge somewhere in the physical body, and the body tissues that lie within that sphere will tend to fall into resonance with the vibrational energy of the trapped emotion. In other words, those tissues will actually be experiencing that emotional vibration on a continual basis.
e deal with emotions on a daily basis. The affect of these emotions, depends on how we allow them to affect us now and possibly in our future. Do you ever feel that you are struggling under the weight of something that you can’t quite put your finger on? Perhaps your attempts to form lasting relationships never seem to work out. You may wish that certain events in your past had never occurred but feel powerless to move beyond them. These could be part of trapped emotions in our bodies. If you are angry or have resentment towards another, and don’t forgive them as the Bible tells us, then it is like Malachy McCourt said, “Resentment is like taking poison and waiting for the other person to die”. Millions of people are suffering from physical aches and pains. Many times there are unseen trapped emotional energies that contribute to or create physical pain. If

Dr Bradley Nelson believes that everything you have ever done in your entire life has been logged in your subconscious mind. If you learn how to tap into your subconscious mind and find those trapped emotions, then with the proper tools and skills, you can remove those trapped energies in your body. This will leave you in a more positive and loving energetic state, which will leave you in a better state of health.

The way the trapped emotions are found is through the use of kinesthetic testing or kinesiology. Muscle testing can tell us about the overall health and balance of our bodies. The simplest method to get answers from your subconscious mind is called the Sway Test. Assume a standing position and make sure you are comfortable and ask your subconscious mind a question. If the answer is a positive or a yes, your body will sway forward, or if the answer is a negative or a no, your body will sway backwards. If someone else is testing you they will

use kinesiology testing to find your trapped energy. Then with the use of a magnet, the person will release the emotion by running it over the Governing Meridian with the intention of releasing the trapped energy that is in your body. Make sure you remember to breathe while your trapped energy is being released. The Governing Meridian runs from between your eyebrows over your head and down your spine. We have noticed that most people with chronic physical conditions have a trapped energy associated with that area. In one case we found that the patient had a trapped energy over her right breast area that was associated with her mom’s diagnosis of breast cancer four years ago. Once we released the trapped energy associated with that area, the chronic complaint drastically decreased and she is holding her adjustment better.

Chronic Fatigue? Could be Your Thyroid! Hypothyroidism (low thyroid): an Epidemic.
The Massive Under Utilization of Thyroid Hormone Replacement Therapy Part I of a Mini Series By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
H
of the thyroid hormone. I do like to repeat my “cup of coffee” rule of thumb. Patients who can drink a pot of coffee and go right to bed and sleep well can usually replace thyroid at a more vigorous rate than the patient who smells some coffee and is up for two days. Those who can’t stand any stimulation need to be started from 1/16th grain or less of my favorite thyroid, NatureThroid (Westhroid) and the new even cleaner (fewer additives and excipients) NatureThyroid P especially for the more allergically sensitive patient.
ypothyroidism (low thyroid) its causes, diagnosis and treatment is an extremely multifactorial business. Misleading and misunderstood thyroid laboratory measures (TSH, T4) overshadow many important signs and symptoms of the physical examination such as coldness, dryness, obesity, depression, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches, heavy periods, infertility, hair loss, digestive disorders, constipation and many more. Environmental and genetic inhibitory factors are legion at every level of central and tissue thyroid receptors. Untreated thyroid (gland in the throat that is in charge of metabolism at every cell in the body) dysfunction is responsible for untold misery such as unnecessary hysterectomies from menorrhagia (heavy periods), needless antidepressant drug administration and pain medication. Quality of life issues such as chronic fatigue, obesity, infertility and up to 300 different health issues could be solved with proper thyroid support and lifestyle changes.
Many good books and treatises have been written on hypothyroidism. The first that I read was Hypothyroidism The Unsuspected Illness, by Broda Barnes, MD. Stephen Langer, MD wrote Solved the Riddle of Illness. More Lately Mark Starr, MD wrote Hypothyroidism Type 2: The Epidemic. Also Stop The Thyroid Madness by Janie A Bowthorpe, M.Ed. Older endocrinology texts such as Wilson’s Endocrinology remind us that a high cholesterol level was the poor man’s measure of hypothyroidism.
Although none of this information is particularly new, there are many recent citations I will review which, I hope, will embolden the reader with this information to resist the standard, allopathic (regular doctors) only line that unless thyroid blood test parameters are grossly abnormal they don’t need natural thyroid pill support. In my 41 years of medical practice we have had not just monthly but daily and weekly miracles related to sensitive thyroid replacement therapy. All of medical prescribing is an art as well as science and particularly so for thyroid. Balancing adrenal (super gland on top of the kidneys) support is critical to avoid overstimulation during gentle titration

What’s Wrong with Thyroid Blood Tests? After a review of 118 peer reviewed medical articles, the National Academy of Hypothyroidism documents convincing opinions and data about the unreliability of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone from the pituitary, master gland in the head) as a reflection of thyroid status. Hang in there with me on this. “The TSH is thought to be the most sensitive marker of peripheral tissue levels of thyroid, and it is erroneously assumed by

most endocrinologists and other physicians that, except for unique situations, a normal TSH is a clear indication that the person’s tissue thyroid levels are adequate. A more thorough understanding of the physiology of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis and tissue regulation of thyroid hormones demonstrates that the widely held belief that the TSH is an accurate marker of the body’s overall thyroid status is clearly erroneous.”
TSH is the only screening blood test that some physicians are using to determine thyroid status. It misses many people who desperately need thyroid. References. 1. www.antiagingpittsburgh.com/2011/04/hormonesmetabolism-and-obesity/
The TSH test is rendered inaccurate by a plethora of coexisting symptoms. Physiologic stress, depression, insulin resistance and diabetes, aging, calorie deprivation (dieting), PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, obesity and numerous other conditions. Thus, with physiologic or emotional stress the TSH is not a reliable or sensitive marker of an individual’s true thyroid status.”

outh and throat diseases, which range from cavities to cancer, cause pain and disability for millions of Americans each year. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of childhood. 90% of decay occurs on the chewing surfaces of teeth; these are often the first and most frequent sites to be affected by cavities in adolescents; and the risk for decay can continue throughout life. The Nevada State Health Division reports that 71% of minors in Nevada have experienced dental decay; 44% have visible untreated dental decay. Urgent dental needs, evidenced by the presence of pain and/or swelling were found in 6% of children. Comparing Nevada statistics to national data, minors of some racial and ethnic groups and those from lower-income families have higher incidents of untreated tooth decay. For those under 18, Nevada has 14.3% uninsured. Nevada ranks 45th for dental health professional shortages, and employer based coverage for children has eroded. Additionally, this year, an estimated 36,500 people will learn that they have mouth or throat cancer, and more than 7,800 will die of these diseases. Although many oral cancers are found in

older Americans, a frightening trend of oral cancer lesions are now being found in adolescents and young adults. Oral cancers have originations from chewing tobacco, smoking, alcohol, and HPV infections from oral sexual encounters. What do all these statistics mean? Proactive oral health instruction, sexual education, and nutritional education for parents and their children is paramount. The use of fluoride has been proven to strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. Although water fluoridation was mandated by the Nevada Legislature for water agencies servicing 400,000 citizens or more, no funding has been provided for Northern Nevada. Dentists and doctors can provide prescriptions for fluoride tablets and fluoride rinses are available over the counter. Xylitol, a sugar substitute, has been shown to destroy the bacteria that cause cavities when it is the sole sweetener in chewing gum. Early detection of oral lesions does increase the survival percentage rates. Dental providers are trained in oral cancer screening techniques; one of which is the Velscope fluorescing scope available at Infinity Dental Group.

Breast fed babies tend to have healthier gut bacteria and absorb essential nutrients more easily. There is much emerging evidence that demonstrates the immunity enhancing effects of breast milk. a new mother find an ideal nursing position for her and her baby. Dry, cracked nipples can be soothed with a gentle calendula or comfrey based balm. Cocoa butter, aloe gel, almond oil, vitamin E and lanolin may also be used. It is best to wipe any of these treatments off before a feeding, as they can taste bitter. Hand expressing a little milk before a feeding, and then doing so again afterwards and letting a small amount of milk dry completely on the nipple can ease soreness and prevent infection.
Breast feeding mom’s need to be sure to maintain a balanced diet, and require 500-600 calories more than they would normally eat in a day. Certain foods and herbs can be helpful for increasing milk production. These include barley, oats, beets, carrots (especially carrot juice), winter squash, almonds, avocados, brown rice, mochi, leafy greens, sea vegetables, alfalfa, blessed thistle, dandelion root and leaves, marshmallow root, milky oats, nettle, red raspberry leaf and slippery elm bark. It is important to include complete proteins and complex carbohydrates and to emphasize calcium and iron rich foods. Eating a variety of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables every day will help support the body’s need for vitamin and mineral rich foods. The mother can continue to take her prenatal vitamins too. It is also important for mother and baby to get some light sun exposure to help them synthesize vitamin D.

Staying hydrated is crucial, it is best if mom always keeps a water bottle or a glass of water nearby to sip on throughout the day. Many babies can tolerate their mothers consumption of a small amount of caffeine, while others are more sensitive to it and will display colicky symptoms. The daily intake of water must be increased to prevent dehydration if caffeine is being consumed. Alcohol enters the milk quickly after consumption, and large amounts can get baby drunk. An occasional glass of wine or beer will not be harmful, but it is best to wait an hour or two after the drink before nursing.

Getting fit for a nursing bra will help support the increase weight of the breasts. I have found that nursing tank tops are really comfortable, provide plenty of support, and allow me to nurse my baby easily and discretely. Nursing pads can be placed in the bra if the breasts tend to leak milk between feedings. Nipple shields are helpful for inverted nipples and can be used even before the baby is born. It is important to wash nipple shields frequently and to change nursing pads often, as too much moisture left on the skin can contribute to thrush, a type of yeast infection. If thrush does develop plain, unsweetened yogurt can be applied to the nipples, and baby’s mouth to provide relief and help clear it up. It is especially important to make sure the nipples get plenty of air circulation. Some nipple soreness is common in the first few days of nursing, but normally the nipples adjust quickly. Improper positioning of the baby at the breast can contribute to soreness. If the baby is latched on properly, it will not feel painful. The baby’s mouth should surround the entire areola of the nipple, not just the tip. Lactation consultants and experienced nursing mothers can help

BOOKREVIEW
A Cancer Cure That Worked By Barry Lynes Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
R
oyal Raymond Rife, born in 1888, was one of the greatest scientists in history. He should have received two Nobel Prizes. He invented an astounding microscope which magnified living microbes 60,000 times. Today’s electron microscope can still only show us dead tissue. The other Nobel Prize should have been for his frequency generator, which cured cancer.
equipment was smashed and records destroyed. Rife died in 1971, a broken derelict whose dedication and inventions could have saved the lives of millions of people. Luckily John Crane was able to save thousands of documents preserved from the 1930s and eventually to share the long hidden facts with author Barry Lynes. This book is the result.
He began researching a cure for cancer in 1920, and after isolating the cancer virus he learned how to destroy it by beaming certain vibrational frequencies toward the virus, which shattered the microbe (like kidney stones are broken up today by ultrasound frequencies). In 1934, working with some of the most respected researchers and doctors in America, he successfully cured 16 of 16 terminal cancer cases by giving a painless three minute treatment every third day for three months. The death of the virus within their bodies allowed their own immune systems to restore the patient to health. Follow-up clinics conducted by the head of the USC Medical Committee certified the results.
Why would the authorities want to discredit Rife’s work and destroy his inventions? Because people in control of the cancer treatment world did not want a simple quick cure for cancer. It was not in their economic or career interest nor is it today. Cancer is big business. They wanted complicated disease syndromes and all the paraphernalia of techniques, expert analyses, peer group conferences, discussions, papers, research grants and clinical trials for years before a new cancer therapy might be allowed. It is a horrendous crime which serves only those who are playing the lucrative ‘expert’ game or the big pharmaceutical companies supplying the chemo. The leader of the opposition, President of the AMA at that time, Morris Fishbein, even tried to buy Rife’s company. When Rife refused, the hammer dropped.
Independent physicians using the Rife equipment successfully treated as many as 40 people per day during those years. In addition to curing cancer and other deadly diseases, degenerative conditions were also reversed. Unfortunately, Rife’s scientific theories and method of treatment conflicted with orthodox medicine. His work was stopped and both the research and treatments were forced underground. Certain doctors secretly continued curing cancer patients with Rife’s machine but if they were found out they were threatened with the loss of their licenses. In the 1950s Rife took a brilliant partner – John Crane. They worked together to design and construct new and better equipment. Again the authorities struck. Crane was jailed,

So what has happened to this technology? Certain researchers have taken the original frequency information and expanded on it. Rife machines (sometimes renamed) are available for purchase on the internet now. Search for ‘Rife machines’ or ‘frequency/resonance machines’ and proceed with caution. Do your research, as all resonance machines may not be programmed with the correct frequencies. This book was published in 1987 so that means that the cure for cancer has been suppressed for seventy-six years. It’s time to learn what’s going on and to take more responsibility for our own health.

Milk Thistle Written By Allison Prater
S
ilybum marianum or or Milk Thistle is a member of the daisy family. Native to the mediterranean region, it has been prized for its liver-protective and regenerative effects since ancient times. This thistle either grows as annual or biennial plants. The beautiful pink-to-purple flowers sit atop a long stem surrounded by thorny leaves. The name “milk thistle” is attributed to the milky white bands that are splashed across the leaves. The entire milk thistle plant is edible, and it was once a popular ingredient around the 16th century. The roots may be eaten raw, boiled, par-boiled or roasted. They are often served with butter. The young shoots can be cut down to the root in the spring time to be boiled and buttered. The spiny bracts that surround the flower head can be eaten in much the same way as globe artichoke. The mature stems need to be peeled and soaked overnight to remove bitterness before stewing them. The leaves can be trimmed of their prickly parts and can be eaten raw or boiled. Eating milk thistle is said to improve digestion. The medicinal part of the milk thistle lies in its seeds. The seeds have been used to boost milk production in nursing mothers. They have also been used to treat coughs, depression, and digestive, liver, gallbladder and spleen issues. Some unproven treatment uses of milk thistle include lowering cholesterol, reducing insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes who

also have cirrhosis, reducing the growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical and prostate tissue. The seeds contain a flavonolignan complex, silymarin, which is extracted by many drug companies and used in pharmaceutical medications that treat diseases of the liver. Silymarin has been shown to protect the liver so effectively that it is even used to counteract the effects of the death cap mushroom. Milk thistle also has a reputation as a hangover cure as its bitter tincture can help the organs rid themselves of toxins after heavy drinking. The seeds should only be worked with under the supervision of a skilled health care practitioner that you trust. Milk thistle thrives in hot temperatures and does not like a lot of moisture. Sow outdoors in the late spring. Plants should be spaced 12 to 15 inches apart. The plant enjoys full sun and does not have any specific soil needs. References: 1. hange your mind and you can change your life.” We’ve heard that saying for years but until we actually do it we don’t realize how true it really is. We grow up being programmed with a group of beliefs and expectations that determine how much money we make, what achievements we think we’re capable of, how much personal power we have, how smart we think we are, etc. We grow up idolizing certain positions or professions. But once we realize we don’t have to go along with the ideas of the previous generation or those of our peers, our lives begin to change. It doesn’t take a whole lifetime to change our beliefs and once it occurs, we’re free to make up our own minds about that subject and act accordingly. Dr. Bruce Lipton, a brilliant biologist, thought he was trapped by the orthodox Central Dogma (it’s really called that) of biology until he proved that our cells respond positively or negatively to thoughts, opinions and beliefs. He is an active research scientist for the new biology called epigenetics. Epi means “over” or “above.” Epigenetics is the study of how cells function independent of the genes. Traditional biology says our genes control everything. They don’t. Lipton understands enough about physics to know that our thoughts, opinions and beliefs all have vibrational frequencies which affect our cells. His research shows that we can actually change our DNA. Our DNA decides certain attributes while we’re being formed in the womb. However, emotional influences such as family attitudes and feelings of safety affect our cells, even before birth. Then the culture, religion and the family dynamics take over, programming us consciously and subconsciously for what they want us to believe. Dr. Lipton’s book, The Biology of Belief explains how that works. He went through a great deal of harassment from colleagues as he was doing his research. None wanted to change their original opinions and those peers reinforced each other’s resistance. Peer pressure was so strong that Lipton had to leave the country in order to do his research. The same story applies to anyone who has achieved great things – they had to go against the prevailing attitudes of their colleagues in order to do their research or move ahead in any way. We don’t need a dictatorship to keep us in line because the culture, our family and friends will do it quite efficiently. Why? Because of our immature fear of being different.

which is very effective. We now know that it takes 20 years for any new proven idea to get into college textbooks and even longer to get into elementary and high school textbooks. So, in our most formative years, we’re being programmed with information that is obsolete. So get into the habit of asking yourself, “Where did that idea come from? Whose voice is that in my head?” You’ll be surprised and amused at how soon you’ll be able to identify it. Then consciously decide whether you want to continue with that belief. Don’t keep perpetuating old ideas and opinions if they’re not yours. Research shows that you will make only as much money as (the average of) five of your closest friends. So it’s well known that friends or family can hold us back. Be brave enough to think for yourself. We have only so much time. Don’t spend it living someone else’s life and spouting someone else’s ideas. References: 1. Lipton, Dr. Bruce. The Biology of Belief. Mountain of Love – Elite Books. Santa Rosa, California. 2005 2. some reason breast feeding is not possible, or not the best choice for you, reading the ingredient list on the back of that can of formula will serve you and your baby well.
ottle feeding babies with artificial milk is a fairly recent human behavior, a trend that can be directly linked to profit motives from both the public and private sector. Prior to the second world war, babies were almost always exclusively breast fed. During the war, when women joined the workforce to keep the economy functioning while the men were in combat, bottle feeding became more common out of necessity. Around this time the bottle feeding industry emerged, and with the help of the medical industry began to promote the notion that breast milk was inferior to their powdered milk products.

Today the formula industry is a billion dollar machine and hospitals are paid to endorse specific brands, even going so far as to distribute them to their maternity patients. Advertising is aggressive toward expectant mothers who are mailed free formula samples, coupons, and propaganda designed to undermine their confidence in their bodies’ ability to nourish their babies. This is another example of the curious behavior of our species, that we would prefer to spend thousands of dollars on something that our bodies can produce for free. Baring serious illness, or a pre-existing condition, breast feeding can almost always provide excellent nutrition without the need for supplementation. If for

Yup you read that right, first two ingredients are......wait for it....corn syrup and sugar!? This is followed by milk powder, some cheap oils, and then a long list of synthetic vitamins and minerals. The vitamins and minerals are not going to counteract the negative effects of the high sugar content. And do we really have to talk about why corn syrup is not suitable food for an infant? The list of illnesses that can be attributed to consumption of refined sugar and corn syrup gets longer all the time. This ingredient list makes me want to cry.
Enfamil Premium Newborns:
Glucose Syrup Solids is a fancy word for sugar made from startch, usually corn, again not a good food choice. This is probably the best product of the three since its organic, but its still not the best choice.
Ingredients: nonfat milk, lactose, vegetable oil (Palm Olein, coconut, soy, and high oleic sunflower oils, whey protein concentrate, galactooligosaccharides*, Poly-dextrose*, and less than 1% mortierella alpina oil**, crypthecodinium cohnii oil***, hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamin B6 Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12, Niacinamide, Folic Acid, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Ascorbic Acid, Inositol, Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Cupric Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite, Potassium Citrate, Choline Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Nucleotides (Cytidine 5’-Monophosphate, Disodium Uridine 5’-Monophosphate, Adenosine 5’-Monophosphate, Disodium Guano-sine 5’-Monophotate), Taurine, L-Carnitine.
One thing that the formula industry is desperate to keep quiet are the number of recalls that have taken place for their products. Usually these recalls are due to contamination of some kind or a lack of of essential ingredients, such as iron. Between 1982 and 1994 there were twenty-two significant recalls of various brands of artificial milk powders, including those made by Enfamil and Similac, involving contamination or ingredients that were potentially life threatening to babies. Remember that even if certain lots have been listed as “recalled” on the FDA’s website, many packages and cans have already been bought and consumed. How many mom’s have time to check the FDA’s website regularly to make sure the formula they are feeding their babies has not been recalled?
*a type of prebiotic **A source of Arachidonic Acid (ARA)
So what is a mother to do if breast feeding is not possible? The Weston Price Foundation has listed a couple recipes for home made formula what is comprised of whole food ingredients. A link to these recipes can be found here: http:// holisticsquid.com/the-best-formula-for-your-baby/ There is also an Eats on Feets program in Reno which provides donor breast milk to families. Here is a link to their Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/EatsonFeetsNV.
***A source of Docosahexanenoic Acid (DHA) This one at least gets credit for having no sugar, and including a pre-biotic. Even so its got a long list of hard to pronounce ingredients, some of which could include GMO corn and soy. Also there is no reason that a new born needs to be consuming non fat milk. Babies need milk fat and cholesterol. Also the process of making powdered skim milk creates a substance that contains oxidized cholesterol and neuro-toxic amino acids.

GARDENING
The Musical Fruit “A Rough Patch” Written By Teresa Howell
Y
ears ago, I came across an essay by Benjamin Franklin called “Fart Proudly.” He’d written it in response to a request from a European scientific society, which asked Franklin to submit a proposal to them. Franklin thought the society was pompous and pretentious, so he proposed a study of human flatulence, and the means whereby the odor might be improved. Farting, Franklin claimed, was the result of eating foods that were good for you, and therefore, farting itself was good for you, the social drawback being the smell. Some 250 years later, there’s Beano, so we have no reason not to grow and enjoy the nutritious (and musical) bean. Dried beans are one of the best plant sources of protein, and combined with cereal grains, they provide all the essential amino acids. Beans also have copious amounts of iron, calcium, phosphorous, folacin,

and lots of other vitamins and minerals I can’t pronounce or spell. If you’re unwilling to wait until your beans reach the dried stage, snap beans have equally impressive amounts of vitamins and minerals, but not as much protein or complex carbohydrate. Beans are not only good for you, they’re also good for your soil. Beans, like all legumes, work with bacteria to take nitrogen out of the air. The fixing takes place in little nodules (pink or red if they’re working, green if they’re not). Garden beans aren’t as proficient at fixing nitrogen as some of the other legumes, but they can provide their own nitrogen as they grow, and enrich the soil as they decompose. Legumes each have their favorite rhizobacterium, and if that bacterium isn’t present in the soil, the plant can’t fix nitrogen.

can advise you. Plant beans after the soil warms up, about an inch deep and two-three inches apart. Thin to six inches apart, a little farther for pole beans.
Fortunately, inoculants of various types are available at nurseries or from seed catalogs, and you can either dust the seeds with it, or just put it in the furrow. The inoculants are non-toxic and odorless. In fact, they look a lot like dirt.
Although beans will be able to get their own nitrogen when they are established, they will need some nitrogen in the soil as they become established. Although they can take a bit of drought, they like regular water, as long as they don’t get waterlogged.
Gardeners have a wide choice in bean varieties. They can plant bush beans, which don’t need staking or trellising, and might be more suitable for small gardens. Pole beans are more prolific, but require more space and some sort of support system.
My mother used to warn against touching beans when they were wet. Her warning was sound; as touching wet bean foliage can spread fungal diseases. For the same reason, it’s good to water with soaker hoses, rather than overhead sprinkling.
I’ve been tempted to try the humongous “yard long” pole bean variety. One single bean would probably feed my whole family for a day or two. I’ll try scarlet runner beans too, since their beautiful red flowers fit right in a flower garden, and attract hummingbirds as well. I might even plant some fava beans—you know, the kind Hannibal Lecter ate with liver.
Green beans are wonderfully productive, especially if you harvest every day. Dry beans aren’t quite as productive, but make up for it in the density of nutrition.
My mother, always one to economize, recommends that I plant one bean variety, harvest green beans until the end of the season, and then let the last batch mature to dry beans. However, many beans that are tasty dry are tough at the green bean stage. Some varieties are suitable for eating both green and dry—your seed catalog will advise you as to that. It seems a bit of a false economy to me. With all the varieties of green beans and dry beans, next spring, I’ll be planting several varieties, and I might as well choose for best taste. I expect choosing bean seeds is a lot like buying stuff from late night TV infomercials—sure, maybe a Gizmo can cut both your lawn and your hair—but how good of a job will it do of either?
Next summer, I’ll be planting a big ol’ bean patch. I hope there’s a good supply of Beano on hand, because I’ll be needing it-proud or not. When Teresa Howell isn’t pondering the philosophy of beans, she teaches English at Great Basin College.

KIDSCORNER
A Walk Through the Trees By Ariana Purcell
H
appy summer! I hope you are having a fantastic summer so far, and I hope you are doing a bunch of fun things like me! For my first week of summer vacation, I got to go up to Lake Tahoe with my grandma and two sisters. We spent a week there, everyday doing something new and exciting. Whether it was river rafting down the Truckee River or just hiking in the woods, each day was filled with fun! One particular event I would like to talk about is my “Tree Top Adventure” in Tahoe City, CA located at the Granlibakken Lodge. The Tahoe Tree Top Adventure Park has 70 plus platforms, 16 zip lines, towering bridges, rope courses and so much more. It is hard to explain, it is something you must do it for yourself because it is a fun and exciting adventure you do not want to miss. You are given a harness to wear, instructions on using the equipment and rules on how to climb and traverse the trees. I started off doing the kids course, called the Flying Squirrel, just to get the hang of climbing the courses and zip lining through the trees. After going through the three different kid courses, learning to climb the courses one by one, and after graduating from the easiest to the hardest course, I decided I was ready for the Adult course-also known as the Monkey Course.
Visit www.HBmag.com
I started by putting on a new harness, which was more complex with two clips, I learned that while doing the Monkey Course, I would have to un-clip and clip myself to the ropes while on the course, which meant I was hanging from the trees unattached. I also learned that the Monkey course was much higher up in the air than the Kid courses. While doing my first Adult course, labeled “The Fuzzy Bunny”, I got the hang of unclipping and clipping myself to the ropes, but I have to admit, you have to pay attention a lot more while climbing the adult course, because if you were to forget to clip on, you could fall… however, I felt very safe and confident in my abilities. Also going through the adult course was rougher on my body; I used muscles that I didn’t usually use, making me feel the strain and soreness of them the next day! Doing the Tree Top Adventure definitely made my summer start with a bang! The view from the tops of the trees was amazing! It was definitely a fun thing to do with my family, and everyone enjoyed it and had a blast! I would recommend this to anyone and everyone! So if you are looking for an adventure, you know where to go! I hope your summer is going well, and Happy Fourth!

Vegan Superfood Sushi
W
2. Stir together the rice vinegar, salt and sugar in a small bowl. To keep the vinegar pure, use only wooden or plastic utensils, never metal.
ithin the past few years, the popularity of sushi has soared in the United States. The only problem is, going out for sushi can be incredibly expensive and unhealthy due to the salty condiments and overload of rice in most prepared sushi rolls. However, making sushi at home is the cheap, healthy, fun and easy alternative to an expensive night out. This makizushi (rolled sushi) is vegan, and high in protein, fiber, calcium, iron and healthy fats. Unlike sushi that you can buy at a restaurant or a store, this has no cholesterol, no preservatives, controls hunger and promotes a fast metabolism and healthy digestion.
3. When the rice is done cooking, remove it from the heat and let it sit covered for about 10 minutes. 4. Add the rice vinegar mixture to the warm rice and lightly fluff it with a large wooden or plastic spoon. 5. Fluff the rice until it is cooled to body temperature. 6. While the rice cools more, cut the tempeh, cucumber, and avocado into long, thin strips.
The star of this dish is tempeh, which is basically fermented soy. Unlike many fermented foods, it isn’t volatile, acidic or stinky, it has a very mild sweet nutty flavor and can be eaten raw. Not only is tempeh delicious, but it is also a superfood – it helps lower cholesterol, it’s high in protein and nutrients, and because it’s fermented, it’s easier to digest than nearly any plant-based protein source. It’s also very inexpensive.
7. Evenly spread some cooled rice on a sheet of nori. 8. Place the tempeh, cucumber and avocado in the middle of the nori over the rice. 9. Using firm but gentle and even pressure, roll the sushi up. I typically don’t use a bamboo mat, but you can find instructions on how to use one with a quick google search. 10. To cut the sushi, you’ll need to use a very sharp non-serrated knife. Wet the knife with water after each cut; the key here is not squishing the roll and causing all the rice to fall out. After each cut, wet the knife again and wipe off the excess starch from the rice with a damp washcloth.
Ingredients: 2 cups high quality short-grain sushi rice (you can buy this in Asian markets and other grocery stores) 2 cups water 4 tbsp rice vinegar
11. Serve with sesame seeds, pickled ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, and/or sweet chili sauce (pictured)
2 tbsp salt 1 tbsp sugar
Tips:
1 package of organic tempeh
Having a very sharp knife is key. Perfecting your rolling and cutting technique may take some practice. If you’re having trouble, look up instructional videos and take your time.
½ large English cucumber 2 large avocados
You can add other ingredients to this dish such as non-dairy cream cheese, Sriracha hot sauce, daikon radish, firm tofu, or carrot.
8-10 sheets of sushi nori (seaweed)
Instructions: 1. Cook the rice in a rice cooker, or bring it to a boil and reduce to simmer on the lowest setting on the stovetop. It takes about 15 minutes to cook in a pot.
