Free Far Infrared Sauna Session with First Visit I’m a 55-year young woman on a journey back to health and this is my story. For the past 6 years I have been in and out of hospitals for various surgeries and I was sick all the time! On top of catching every illness that crossed my path, I had horrible back pain for as long as I can remember. The pain was getting so horrible that I could hardly move. I scheduled lower back surgery for June 2007. Before I had my back surgery I fell down and hurt my good shoulder. I still had severe back pain after my surgery and my shoulder started to get worse. I reluctantly went to my doctor to find out what I did to my shoulder. I was sure it would end up in another surgery. He diagnosed me with tendonitis and gave me a prescription for steroids. That was it... I’d had enough! Instead of getting the prescription, I called Janet at Circle of Life Spa… I wanted my life back!! I met with Janet and she explained to me that my body was full of toxins from all the surgeries and medications. She had me get in the floating tank and then the infrared sauna. I was so amazed at what one visit to Circle of Life did for my body – I wanted more! I got started on a weekly routine of mineral wraps, floating tank and infrared sauna sessions to detox my body. I’ve been detoxing for only 4 months but the results are incredible! I see changes in my body every day and so do others – I’ve had many people tell me that I glow! I’ve lost 27 pounds and all the pain in my body is gone!!!! You can’t put a price on good health and I’m so thankful for Circle of Life Spa for helping me to get my health back.

P

STORY

By Carole Bucher

oppies are in bloom in June, all over the globe. Golden California poppies in the west and southwest US; fields of blood-red poppies in Europe and throughout the middle East; stunningly beautiful and endangered Himalayan blue poppies gracing majestic valleys and slopes; delicately hued Oriental and Icelandic poppies decorating every corner of our planet. There are over 10 distinct varieties, including the strikingly gorgeous opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. This poppy poignantly symbolizes our human challenge. It has been the source of miraculous sedation, pain relief and other medical miracles, and it has been the scourge of humanity. Saving lives and destroying them with its opioid yield of morphine, codeine and heroin. In myth and symbol, the poppy, typically the scarlet variety, is generally accepted as a representation of sleep, death and remembrance of those who have died. To the ancient Greco-Romans, the poppy represented the promise of resurrection after death. In Persian culture, it is known as the flower of eternal love. In ancient Sumerian literature it is the flower of joy. In the United Kingdom, the white poppy is celebrated as a symbol of peace. We chose poppies for our cover this month because of their inherently lovely June-ness and as a message of unification around our planet.

PUBLISHER LETTER Dear Readers, In June we think about spring, planting gardens, new beginnings, and perhaps Fathers’ Day. When I think of my dad, I think of a man who provided a very good living for our family. Although he was gone most of the time working, he instilled in me a very strong work ethic, something that I notice is vanishing in our great culture. Dad was precise and worked hard, not only at his job, but in everything he did: cooking, refinishing furniture and in photography. I asked him once why he was an engineer; he answered, because that is what he was trained to do. When he retired from his second career, he moved from Atlanta, Georgia to South Dakota. I asked him, why are you moving back to South Dakota? It is so cold there. His response was that it was not about the weather; it was about the people. His roots were there. I think about that statement a lot. I think about the choices I have made and whether or not they are in alignment with how Dad raised me. He was an Army officer; yet he always advocated thinking for one’s self and to have at least 3 facts to back up opinions and beliefs. I asked my dad the other day if he would do any traveling this summer. He said he had a lot going on -- he is the Commander of the Legion Baseball League. He is seventy-eight and still very active and involved in community service. Thank you Dad, for instilling in me the importance of a strong work ethic and always striving to do my best. Please enjoy this month’s issue of Healthy Beginnings Magazine. It is full of thought provoking and interesting articles. Happy Father’s Day to all the hard working Dad’s! Best in health and happiness,

t has happened to us all. You are walking down the street or driving in your car and suddenly you get the feeling that you have already been to this place or experienced the event. In the past, doctors believed déjà vu to be a symptom of mental abberation, anxiety, schizophrenia, and/or dissociative disorder. Today there are many other theories to explain what déjà vu might be and why we may experience it. Neural theory: This is the belief that déjà vu is caused by a mistiming of neurons firing in the brain. This timing error is thought to make the brain believe that it has encountered a stimulus for the second time, when in fact, it has simply re-experienced the same event from a slightly delayed source.

believe déjà vu to be a memory of an event that occurred in a past life. The belief is that past-life memories are jarred to the surface of the mind by familiar surroundings or people, or that the event or experience has special significance that transcends one or more lifetimes.

Dream theory: This is the notion that déjà vu is a dream remnant memory. Even though you forget the bulk of your dreams, most dreams show activity in the long term memory part of the brain. It has been speculated that dreams read directly into long-term memory, bypassing shortterm memory entirely. In this case, déjà vu might be a memory of a forgotten dream with elements in common with the current waking experience.

There are no doubt other theories, probably equally impossible to validate. What we do know is that this strange, almost eery feeling is compelling and intriguing, reminding us how little we really understand about how our brains functions.

INGREDIENT WATCH

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

Inulin By Lauren Birtwhistle

W

e all know the importance of fiber in our diets. With so many different kinds, it is sometimes difficult to know what fiber is and where exactly you can find it. This month, we want to inform you of a great source of fiber; inulins. Inulins are a group of naturally occurring polysaccharides. They are produced by many plants; usually in the root or rhizomes. This great ingredient can be used in place of sugar, fat and flour. It is particularly advantageous because inulin contains a third to a quarter of the food energy of sugar or other carbohydrates and a 1/6th–1/9th of the food energy of fat.

Inulin is a specific type of dietary fiber that is naturally found in many common foods such as leeks, artichokes, asparagus, onions, garlic, bananas, wheat, rye, and chicory root. Inulin has many benefits to your health. With so many varieties of fiber, it is important to know what can help your body the most. Here are a few ways your body can benefit from inulin:

• Promotes healthy intestinal bacteria. Inulin is a prebiotic. Prebiotics serve as food for probiotics. In this way, inulin is part of a chain of bacteria that may keep your gut healthy and alleviate digestive problems. • Improves digestive functions. Like other fibers, inulin helps digestion, prevents constipation, and keeps you regular. • Helps manage diabetes. Because inulin is not digested, it does not affect glucose levels. This makes it an appropriate food for diabetics and is not counted as carbohydrate intake. • Improves bone health. Preliminary studies suggest that adding inulin to calcium-rich foods like yogurt may boost calcium absorption. This is good news for your bones! Surviving Seasonal Allergies By Dr. Thomas S. Lee, NMD, APH

NATURAL

Simple Solutions for

SOLUTIONS

T

he immune system is weakened by excessive stress, and a weak immune system typically has more allergic problems. There are many smart ways to help strengthen your immunity to prevent allergies, or at least make them more bearable. Lowering one’s level of personal stress can be a huge step toward fewer allergy symptoms. What stress management methods are best? That’s an epic question that many of us are working on, so see what works for you. Ever notice that everyone around here is from somewhere else? Most of the entire nation could say the same. With our mobile population in these modern times, people have very different allergic triggers. You and I are unique, like everyone else. Fortunately, we can work with our similarities and strengthen our immune systems. Allergies can cause many different symptoms, but the hay fever symptoms of runny, irritated sinuses, itchy eyes, sore throats, and coughs are most often identified as a reaction to environmental allergens. The membranes of the nose, sinuses, eyes, and throat need healthy oils and fats as nutrition, and conversely, they need protection from toxic and unhealthy oils.

Next, have you torn up your skin with intense nose blowing, sneezing, or scratching? If so, put a little of that same coconut oil in a small jar and swab the irritated skin after every attack. If you are on the road, the pure butter patties that some restaurants serve are great first-aid units to protect and soothe your painful touchy areas. Dab off the excess gently. Do not use margarine or mineral oil-based lotions for this purpose, as they damage and irritate the skin while failing to protect from further damage. For sinus infections and aggravated allergic responses to airborne problems, try this cleansing and soothing spray regimen. First, get two of the drugstore plastic nasal inhaler bottles they sell with saline or antibiotics, and also get some 2 or 3% hydrogen peroxide. Pry the top off your squeeze spray inhaler bottles. Discard the pricey contents, and refill one container with the hydrogen peroxide. Continued on page 35...

The regular use of virgin coconut oil for cooking, along with olive oil and organic butter in the diet, has the longest safety and health record in human history. The trans-fatty acids and hydrogenated oils used in modern food processing are a disaster for the health of your delicate mucus membranes. If you are tormented by allergies, look at what quality of oils and fats are in your regular diet.

Andropause...

male menopause

By Mark Gunderson, MD

A

ndropause, the male equivalent of menopause, is real although more subtle than menopause. While estrogen levels decline abruptly after menopause in women, there is a gradual decline in male hormones (androgens) that usually begins in the 40’s. Testosterone (T)–the main male hormone– declines slowly. However, the sex-binding-hormone globulin (SBHG) increases with age, resulting in less free bio-available testosterone. Along with the age-related decline in human growth hormone, the loss of testosterone contributes to the familiar “pot belly” and declining muscle tone in middle age men. The symptoms of andropause include a waning interest in sex, difficulty in having and maintaining an erection, as well as fatigue, depression, irritability, aches, pains, and stiffness. As men age, there is an overall decline in bio-available T, while Estrogen (E) levels tend to rise or stay the same. The increase in SBHG, which binds both T and E, leads to an imbalance that directly causes many of the debilitating health and performance problems associated with aging. As testosterone levels are lowered, there is a change in body composition that results in higher body fat levels. The fat cells possess an aromatase enzyme that further encourages the production of estrogen from testosterone in men. This relative increase in estrogen may explain the enlarged prostate so common in aging men!

Practitioners of Age Management Medicine (AMM) can order simple blood tests to determine levels of male hormones. The normal reference range for T ranges from 250 to 1100. This is a huge range. Men at the lower end of the spectrum can be symptomatic while men at the higher range are fit, active, mentally clear, and have active sex lives! The goal of AMM practitioners is to boost production of T or supplement it to higher normal levels, to restore optimal health and quality of life. There has been a long-held dogma in modern medicine that testosterone was implicated in higher rates of prostate cancer and heart disease. The reality is that the lowest levels of testosterone in men are associated with higher rates of heart disease and prostate cancer. This has been confirmed by countless medical studies (refs below). Additionally, there have been two studies in the last two years that have associated higher mortality rates in men with the lowest testosterone levels. It is now becoming clear that T is a total body hormone. Treceptors are located in the brain, where sexual stimulation and erection begin. Here, neuronal T-receptor sites are prompted to ignite a whole cascade of biochemical events that involve T-receptors in the nerves, blood vessels and muscles. An increasing number of studies have shown an association of low T levels and cardiovascular disease rates in men. T additionally has beneficial effects of maintaining heart muscle, promoting coronary artery dilation (good circulation), some modest help in cholesterol and lipid levels, as well as lowering systolic blood pressure. T is also involved in facilitated glucose transport into the cells and can be helpful in improving insulin resistance-a major factor in adult onset diabetes. T optimization increases muscle mass, decreases fat mass, helps maintain bone density, and can increase muscular strength, with no change in diet or exercise. T supplementation can improve depression that is related to low levels of T. Many adults have been able to reduce or stop anti-depressants once T is optimized. Many of the modern anti-depressants have common complications of a decrease in libido which can be helped by T. DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is made in the body from T. DHT contributes to benign prostatic hyperplasia, a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, but annoying as it can cause difficulty passing urine and increased frequency, especially at night. DHT levels have to be monitored as increases in T can lead to increases in DHT. Some men can boost their T levels by using human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). T can also be supplemented by either transdermal creams or injectable T to maintain youthful levels.

Studies have shown supplemental T can result in lower levels of cholesterol, glucose, and triglycerides, reductions in blood pressure and decreased abdominal fat mass, increased sense of well-being, increased libido, increased energy, better focus and concentration and increase in muscle mass and strength.

performance and desire is waning. His mood, energy, and quality of life are less than optimal. Restoring testosterone to youthful levels can resolve many or all of these symptoms. We do not have to rely on medications that treat the symptoms such as Viagra or anti-depressants. Treat the cause: decreased bio-available testosterone! Andropause is real and treatment programs are available. Women, do not let your husband or significant other suffer in silence.

Monthly Health Outlook:

The Sun in Gemini By Robert Ayres

T

his month the Sun passes through Gemini. The Sun acts as a focal point for the cosmic energies of this constellation as they influence life on Earth, enlivening the expressions of nature and their correspondences within the human being. Gemini is the first air sign of the zodiac. The enlivenment of the air element results in the wind being more turbulent and changeable. There is a sense of shifting and changing as the end of spring is shifting to prepare for summer. If you are a Gemini by Sun sign, or have significant planets in Gemini in your natal chart, this information is even more directly applicable. Gemini rules the shoulders, arms, and hands. The Twins rule all polarities, dualities, and opposites. The intention at this time is to balance and integrate all du-

alities into unity. Mercury, the planetary ruler of Gemini, also rules the mind and the two hemispheres of the brain. The specialization of consciousness expressed through the brain is designed to be put into action by the arms and hands. From the perspective of more immediate health issues, Gemini rules the lungs and nervous system. The lungs form the basis of the respiratory system that specializes in the activity of the air element in the physical body. The influence of the astral or soul body is expressed through the respiratory system. Our mental life is sustained and stimulated through our breathing. It is an ancient, esoteric principle that control of the breath results in the control of the mind and its activity. This is the basis of the effectiveness of breathing techniques in achieving states of expanded awareness. The ancient wisdom tells us that contained within the air element is prana or chi. This is a concentration of the life force that is the basis of life. We have to breathe it in and then, through the oxygenation of the blood through the lungs, it is distributed through the body. The Greek word pneuma means air and spirit. The ancients knew that contained within the atmosphere is the living spirit that is the source of life. We take it in indirectly through food and water, but we assimilate it directly into our being through breathing.

June 2008

The lungs and respiratory system are part of the rhythmic system that is positioned between the head and the stomach. The head is the center of the fire element and the stomach is the center of the water element in the human physiology. The air element is designed to keep the fire and water elements in balance. In many people, there is an energetic battle going on between these elements that can result in health issues and crises. These can manifest as head and stomach aches. Doing regular breathing exercises can bring the system into balance. Breathing polluted air negatively affects our body and mind and the quality of consciousness that we are able to sustain. A good suggestion is to get an air purifier for your home or office. It can help improve your mental clarity and overall vitality. The Sun in Gemini is also the time of year when allergic reactions to various types of pollens affects many people. Airborne pollens can irritate the lungs and respiratory system and result in breathing disorders, runny noses and inflamed eyes. Some of the natural herbal remedies that treat asthma, coughs, bronchitis, catarrh and lung ailments that are ruled by Gemini are coltsfoot, hyssop, mullein, horehound, yerba santa, and elecampane. These can be made into teas and tinctures to relieve symptoms.

www.HBMag.com

Gemini also relates to the nervous system which connects all parts of the body with the mind and its physical counterpart, the brain. The nervous system is also of a dual nature, comprised of the sympathetic and autonomic nervous systems. Deep mysteries are connected with the nervous system that are part of the ongoing evolution of human consciousness. Nerve disorders tend to be accentuated now. These issues can manifest as irritability, nervousness, insomnia, depression, dizziness, and headaches. Vitamin B complex is ruled by Gemini and is a tonic to the nervous system. In addition to vitamins, natural sources of B vitamins are whole grains such as rice, oats, rye, millet and buckwheat. Take note that you may need more B vitamins this month in order to feed and soothe your nervous system.

Our quality of life is directly related to the state of our health. It is important to know and understand our strengths and weaknesses and know how to achieve a state of balance among the complex mixture of cosmic forces that constitute our being. Self knowledge is essential if we are to live a truly fulfilling life. There is a fundamental need to consciously work with the forces of nature and the cosmos of which we are a part. Knowledge is power and we can use it to heal ourselves. Let’s get healthy!

GARDEN

DARE TO DIG IN:

A Guide for Beginning Gardeners From Mother Earth News magazine, by Miranda Smith

G

rowing your own food may seem daunting if you’ve never done it. But don’t let your lack of experience keep you from discovering the joys – and the ease – of a kitchen garden. The satisfaction of bringing in armloads of gorgeous food; the look of a lush, healthy garden; and being outside and active in the fresh air enlivens many gardeners’ spirits. Children are drawn to gardens, too. They never lose interest in watching the plants progress from a pair of seed leaves to a fruit-bearing adult or watching all the creatures bound to happen along. all, vegetables once considered frightening are suddenly greeted by name and gobbled right up. What follows are the key guidelines for a successful new garden:

BUILD THE SOIL The easiest way to start new garden beds is to cover an area with cardboard or newspapers topped by compost, soil or mulch. This will smother any grass and perennial weeds if you leave the covering in place for at least several weeks. Another method to clear the land is to rent a tiller (or hire someone to do the tilling). If the area is covered with grass, you probably will need to till it several times to thoroughly break up the sod. Most new garden soils will benefit from a liberal application of compost. Spread a one-half to 1-inch layer over your new beds. If you apply compost, or if you use nutrient-rich grass clippings as mulch, additional fertilizers may not be necessary. In other locations, your soil may need specialized amendments. You can’t determine what’s needed without a soil June 2008

test. For soil-testing contacts in each state, go to www.MotherEarthNews.com/ soil_test. An organic mulch of grass clippings, leaves, hay or straw does triple duty in the garden. In addition to feeding plants as it decomposes, the mulch also prevents weeds and reduces watering chores.

SAVE YOURSELF WORK Concentrate on making your first garden easy to care for. A couple of simple tricks will help you achieve this: Plant in dedicated beds, not rows. If you till your garden, rake loose soil from the pathways to form 4-foot-wide growing beds. Make the paths between them about 3 feet wide, which is a comfortable width for walking and working. Check seed packets or garden books to learn how many rows to plant in each bed. With lettuce, for example, you would make four rows across each bed. Using this method, however, you only would plant two rows of larger plants such as potatoes or peppers. The close spacing between plants in beds also helps with weeding - as the plants gain in size, the soil around them

www.HBMag.com

becomes too shady for good weed growth. Another big advantage of permanent beds is that you can avoid walking on the soil, so it stays looser to promote better growth.

START SMALL When you think of your future garden, you may imagine a half acre of crops, all nicely laid out in beds, with trellises and tips interspersed for visual interest, and enough flowers to keep a small florist busy. That’s certainly a wonderful goal - but not for the first year! The most common reason for abandoning a garden is too much ambition. In the spring, when the weather’s nice and you’re happy to work outside, it’s easy to open too much area and plant too many crops. Resist this temptation - make your garden smaller than you can easily care for so you never have trouble keeping up mulching, watering and harvesting. Add to it over time, increasing it just enough so that you can take care of it.

CROPS AND CULTIVARS Good crops for beginning gardeners include lettuce, peas, carrots, radishes and onions in the spring; tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn, cucumbers and zucchini as the growing season progresses; beets and kale for fall harvest. Crop selection can make a difference to both your enjoyment and your success as a gardener. Begin by buying seed and plants from companies based in your region.

MIX IT UP

June 2008

Grow a variety of crops adjacent to each other. This kind of garden plan gives you several advantages. It discourages flying pests because, rather than seeing a big area of their favorite host, they see a patchwork of plants scattered here and there throughout the garden. Soil-dwelling pests and diseases tend to play favorites, too. If they have to travel only a few inches from the roots of one plant to the next, they have no trouble spreading through your garden. But if they have to travel through a labyrinth of roots from a variety of plants, they may not make it to the next host plant. This is the secret behind crop rotation, too - by changing the location of your crops every year, you move away from pests or diseases. Diversity and crop rotation also help to manage the soil because different crops require different ratios of nutrients. If you always grow squash in the same place, for example, this nitrogen-hungry crop may deplete the soil’s natural supply. You can add more area or design more complicated features to your garden once you’ve begun to feel confident about your gardening skills. Until then, stick with these principles to create an easy-care garden filled with a bounty of healthy crops. Excerpted from Mother Earth News magazine, the original guide to living wisely. SUPPLEMENTS 101

RESVERATROL “In Vino Sanitas”

In (red) Wine, There is Health By Kurt Grange, PhD, ND

R

esveratrol is a natural compound found in grapes, mulberries, peanuts, and other plants or food products, especially red wine. It is a protective compound produced by these plants in response to environmental stresses (diseases, molds, etc.) that may protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease by acting as an antioxidant, antimutagen, anti-inflammatory and in anti-aging.

tacks and heart disease. The “French Paradox” says that a person can eat a lot of fat, yet not get heart disease. Why? One of the reasons is that the French who live in France’s wine district and the men of Roseto drink wine that contains resveratrol, which we now know is a powerful, free radical fighting antioxidant.

Red wine has about 1.5 to 3 milligrams of resveratrol per liter (a liter is almost 34 ounces). In order to “drink” a therapeutic amount of resveratrol you would have to consume about 1,000 bottles of “good” red wine. Fortunately, or not, depending on your outlook, very pure extracts of resveratrol are available in supplemental form.

Free radicals assault and batter the cells of our glands and organs. They gradually weaken our immune system and make us vulnerable to disease and cellular destruction. As we age and our immune system becomes less effective, the assault of the free radicals intensifies and we begin to “surrender” to old age. This is why for the first 35 years of life most of us stay young, strong and healthy. Then it seems like we suddenly start to age rapidly.

Much of the interest in resveratrol stems from a 1966 broadcast by ‘60 Minutes’ about the “French Paradox” and studies of men in Roseto, PA, who had virtually total immunity to heart at-

Studies show that the free radical fighting antioxidants and compounds in resveratrol seem to have the ability to slow down and possibly reverse some of this aging process. Resveratrol activates a cell’s survival defense enzyme, which prolongs the time cells have to repair their free radical-induced broken DNA. One of the major results of free radical damage is heart disease. A serious complication is the hardening and thickening of arteries. A “vicious cycle” of radicals causing artery damage and narrowing due to scar tissue that, in turn, promotes more free radical activity and more damage. Resveratrol’s antioxidant action helps

June 2008

18

stop free radical damage and opens the arteries by enhancing the formation of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a critical component of heart/artery function. It allows blood vessels to “relax,” which enhances blood flow. In a recent study, a high-cholesterol diet decreased nitric oxide by about a third. Resveratrol supplements significantly reversed the trend. In this respect, resveratrol is similar to Viagra, which also affects nitric oxide. However, whereas Viagra only affects small vessels, resveratrol affects the main arteries. Studies have demonstrated that resveratrol’s antioxidant activity also has the ability to inhibit vessel inflammation narrowing and platelet aggregation (clotting), both which are very important for preventing heart attacks. These actions may help prevent free radical damage and provide protective support to the whole cardiovascular system as well as other organs and systems of the body. Resveratrol also has powerful antiaging properties. According to Dr. David Sinclair in a report aired by ABC on the

www.HBMag.com

April 4, 2008 Barbara Walters show, resveratrol reacts with the G31 gene which controls the natural act of aging. According to Dr. Sinclair, resveratrol switches on this gene, resetting our biological clock, which in effect combats the aging process, allowing us to live 30% longer and helps combat the free radical destructive effect of heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and others.

The

All-Natural Prescription For Wellness

Researchers of resveratrol at Brown University and the University of Connecticut explain, “What we have done is to find molecules that potentially extend the lifespan of people, not just their health spans.” Many of the published studies and research on resveratrol were conducted on animals or in vitro. The results on human studies are now being published and the early reports support the previous research that resveratrol seems to have the potential to: • control cholesterol • protect brain cells and inhibit the development of Alzheimer’s • reverse damage caused by strokes • protect the kidneys and liver from toxins • block many forms of cancer at virtually every state of development • prevent blood clots • prevent damage to the heart muscle • block viruses • enhances the immune system • protects against DNA damage • increase energy • control the aging process As long as we are considering the health giving, free radical fighting properties of the red grape, one should consider supplementing with the 1-2 punch of resveratrol from the grape skin and oligomeric proanthocyanidin flavonoids (OPC’s) extracted from the grape seeds. Knowledge Conquers Fear By June Milligan, MEd, CCHT

T

hese are strange times. Our lives seem to be moving uncommonly fast and on occasion even seem to be out of our control. That may be a bit of an illusion however; we are regularly bombarded with bad news from every corner of the globe, and as a result our attention is focused on that. While this may be an unconscious habit, it is not, per se, out of our control. Think about it. The media goes out looking for disasters and bad actors, and upon finding some, runs the story in a never-ending loop, accompanied by bright colors, pseudo-sad pronouncements and even background music, in order to grab our attention and hold it. The constant drumbeat of doom and gloom keeps us from thinking about things that are important to our own health and well-being. So let’s take our power back! Let’s consciously decide what to think about, and that will determine how we feel. Those feelings and emotions then determine what actions we take. How can we take positive steps toward our future if we’re allowing our minds to be bombarded with negatives, either from the media or from the complainers around us? I’m not suggesting we stick our heads in the sand. A truly informed public is the power of a democracy. But instead of accepting those incomplete facts, do your own research. Find out who really runs the Federal Reserve, or what’s really causing high grain prices. Research the back stories on any subject that interests you, then you can make much more intelligent decisions than you can by just listening to the infomercials and vague

June 2008

20

pronouncements of doom tossed our way by the media. Most of us want to lead fulfilling, prosperous and significant lives, to unleash our fearless, daring spirits, to create fun and harmony, to grab every opportunity that comes near. These are powerful joyous endeavors. How can you participate in them if your attention is focused on what some silly celebrity is about or how many criminals were nabbed in last nights’ cop show? The average American adult watches over five hours of TV a day. Hypnotic alpha brain waves are created while watching TV. Our subconscious minds are so deeply disturbed and hypnotized by that onslaught that we then have to take drugs in order to get to sleep. It’s time to take stock and begin to consciously create our own reality. Many great achievers believe that the hardest competition you will ever face is the competition between your disciplined mind and your undisciplined mind. You must constantly involve yourself in that which brings you value and power, and consciously avoid anything that weakens you. Why do worry and negatives weaken you and drag you down? Because everything is energy Everything in this universe has a vibrational frequency; every cell, every organ, every thought, every emotion. Quantum physics has shown that just the presence of a human being observing an experiment changes the outcome. It’s called the Observer Effect. We are incredibly powerful beings and it is a massive spiritual, emotional and mental tragedy when we play ourselves small through focusing on negatives, vague fears, uncertainties and doubts.

www.HBMag.com

If you fear losing your job, start thinking about either how you can keep it through providing more value than any other employee, or start looking now for another job that is a better fit for you. Take action. Go 3 for 3: imagine and visualize what you want; use all five senses to feel it as if it has already happened; then take the necessary inspired action. All great achievers use this formula. And remember: Thoughts are things. We aren’t punished for our thoughts but by them. So keep them high and inspired. Mathematician John Wheeler and physicist Richard Feynman called thoughts “offer waves.” The answering signals coming back are called “echo waves.” As you think of something you really want, other “like” thoughts (echo waves) are attracted to you and come zooming in, bringing inspiration, creativity, enthusiasm and ideas for action. The same happens with fearful or negative thoughts. They attract more of the same. And the resultant energy is flat and tired. You know this. Are you worried about gas and food prices? Make an action plan to mitigate that impact rather than just complaining. And be consciously aware and appreciative of all things that are going right in your life. Make it a habit, first thing in the morning, to sit quietly and think of all the things you’re grateful for, while feeling that feeling of joy. Your day will

smooth along easier because you have pre-planned your day with those beautiful thoughts. Try using self-hypnosis: right before you go to sleep at night think of exactly what you want, using all five senses; see it, hear it, smell it, taste it, feel it. That programs your mind while you’re in a hypnogogic (near sleep) state so that your subconscious mind has all night to work on it without resistance from your conscious mind. Keep the description of what you want written out, right by your bed. Read it upon awakening and thus pre-pave your day. One more thing: get in the habit of pivoting your thoughts away from negatives to something incredibly juicy and fun that you want to have or do. Remember, when you’re thinking it you’re attracting it, so choose to choose what you’re attracting! Take your power back! Enjoy consciously creating what you want through your thoughts, feelings and actions, while moving ahead in your life with clear focused intentions.

GREEN LIVING Editor’s note: April’s article on laundry pollution in Healthy Beginnings Magazine generated questions from readers that are addressed in this second article.

I

t is a fact that the wide-spread use of laundry soaps, fabric softeners and bleach has greatly contributed to the pollution of our rivers, lakes, streams and oceans. Yet, because of health reasons, odor control, economics and our own vanity, we require some way to clean and reuse clothing, linens and other fabrics in our day-to-day lives. But what are the solutions to the environmental laundry detergent problem? The first suggestion offered by desperate municipalities is to “please, try to use less detergent.” Ok, fair enough, but that’s not really a solution. Remember, laundry detergent companies are not required by law to list their ingredients or prove that they are in fact environmentally friendly. There are many brands of soap on the market that do list their ingredients, since they are not scared to show consumers what they include in their eco-friendly formula for laundry detergent. They are happy to show their integrity on their packing, so show your eco-friendly support by purchasing products that are proud to list their ingredients. Most of the eco-friendly laundry soaps use vegetable-based cleaning agents instead of petroleum-based agents and are phosphate and chlorine free. Plus most do not contain dyes or fragrances that can irritate those with sensitive skin. Other alternatives to detergents and fabric softeners include “Structured Water Technology” like discs, globes and balls. Some of these “throw-in” devices use

The World’s Oldest Source Of Pollution PART 2 By Scott W. Albrecht, IAQS, AOS, CMI, NTP

magnetic force to change the molecular structure of water, thus reducing surface tension and increasing the water’s natural solvency to improve the cleaning process. Other versions claim to do the same by emitting a negative charge that causes the water molecule cluster to dissociate, allowing much smaller individual water molecules to penetrate into the innermost part of the fabric. Upon this writing, testing results were not readily available. Here’s another promising alternative. A little over a decade ago, NASA developed technology to clean the air in the Space Station and Shuttle missions. This technology is known as Radiant Catalytic Ionization (RCI). RCI found its way into the private sector and was adapted for various indoor environmental needs here on earth, including the laundry requirements of various hospitals and certain hotels and commercial laundromats. Today, RCI is available to the consumer for household laundry and is designed to work in conjunction with your existing washing machine. Here’s how it works. The heart of this RCI technology is a reactor chamber that uses cold water, silver nano-ions, and Radiant Catalytic Ionization oxidizers to clean clothes. A proven germ fighter, silver has been used for centuries to kill bacteria and fungi. An RCI cell incorporates two high intensity UV lamps which shine on a hydrated quad-metallic target to create a photocatalytic reaction, producing the following oxidative gases: ozone; ozonide ions; hydro peroxides; hydroxides; free oxygen molecules; super oxide ions. These “Advanced Oxidizers” are injected into the water stream, becoming entrained in the water to break down oils June 2008

22

and grime and disinfect the fabric; they work best with cold water. A byproduct of the Radiant Catalytic Ionization process is Pure Oxygen Aeration, which creates an effervescent cleaning action similar to club soda’s cleaning action where escaping gases release grime and stains from fabrics. Silver ions are added to the oxidized water solution through electrolysis to provide silver’s unique bactericide ability. These silver ions will also be trapped in the fabric to provide ongoing protection against odor-causing bacteria. Stringent testing was recently completed by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation), challenging the device’s ability to reduce microbiological contamination. The results showed significant microbiological reduction by using the unit in conjunction with a standard washer (see reference #1). As you can see, there are eco-friendly alternatives to doing laundry “the old fashioned way” and we need to seek them out. If you missed last month’s expose on the detergent industry, we encourage you to track it down and read it. Bottom line? We can all do more to reduce the tremendous impact of adding polluted “gray water” to the world’s water supplies. WHY NOT NOW?

H

ave you ever put off something that needed to be done and then felt guilty? Simply put, procrastination means “to put off intentionally and habitually” or “to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done.” Do you know of anyone who has not procrastinated at some time in their lives? Procrastination is not always a bad thing. When it creates stress, guilt and even crisis in your life then it becomes a problem. If you consistently put important things off until you have a crisis in your affairs and then feel stressed or guilty, you may need help. However, even the worst procrastinator does not procrastinate in every area of their life. In fact, there are activities you wouldn’t dream of procrastinating: watching a Super Bowl game or going to your favorite restaurant to eat your favorite food. Procrastinators are made, not born. There are many reasons a child may grow up and label themselves as a procrastinator. One such reason is a response to an authoritarian and controlling parent, which keeps children from developing the will to regulate their own behavior; it can even be a form of rebellion. Perfectionists may use procrastination to avoid failure because they feel they must do the job perfectly the first time, so they unconsciously put off starting a task. Perhaps you wait to the last minute before doing a task, and get embroiled in a kind of last minute rush; you are stimulated by working under pressure, or maybe you are someone who avoids the task for fear of success. Then there is the person who can’t make a decision, so procrastinating absolves them from responsibility for the outcome. Procrastination is often caused by associating some form of pain or unpleasantness with the task you are considering. You can change the way you perceive the task by rewarding yourself with something fun after completion, thus anchoring pleasure instead of pain.

What to do about Procrastination By Tonda Adams, JD, CCHT

Aristotle said, “The end of a critical mass, you let it go and it is propelled by its own energy. When you labor is to gain leisure.” If you have labeled yourself a procrastinator, and you believe you are a procrastinator, then, you will surely be a procrastinator. Your UNCONSCIOUS mind believes what you tell it and then it sets out to create what you believe about yourself. Regardless of what motivates you, changing that old programming is possible. Your mind is like a computer with different types of memory. It takes information into a temporary file and then if it is perceived to be believable and true, it is stored on the hard drive, i.e., your memory bank. If your mind has been programmed with negative thoughts about yourself and your abilities, you can reprogram it to function in a more efficient manner. A certified clinical hypnotherapist or other professional may be able to help you change the old programming.

puncture the balloon with doubt fear and resentment, it bursts and all the energy is dissipated, useless, and undirected. Change the way you perceive yourself and your world will change to accommodate your perceptions. You can do it. Why Not Now? References: 1. Your repetitive thoughts have a very powerful affect on your unconscious. In fact, you can change your behavior by changing your thoughts. One of the most important aspects of accomplishing a task is trust in yourself – trust that you have what it takes to accomplish any given task in an efficient and timely manner. You will be amazed at what happens when you place your unwavering attention on an objective with the strong desire to accomplish it. It takes focus and desire or emotion held firm that creates the energy to accomplish it. If you do not trust and feel good about yourself and the task at hand, you are defeated before you begin. Decide on a task and determine how you wish to accomplish it. Stay focused and determined. Your desire is like a balloon. The more air you breath into it the bigger it gets. Inspiring or Controlling...

What Kind of Leader are You? By Dale Halaway

L

ee Lacoca once said, “One can accomplish great things when they no longer care who gets the credit.”

At a time when our country is facing war and questioning the leadership we are under, perhaps we should reflect upon our personal leadership styles. By changing how we lead ourselves and others in our lives, we can make the most significant difference in our day-to-day realities and affect real change in our country.

Whether you are a business leader, parent or simply “leading” your own life, there are two types of leadership styles, Inspiring and Controlling. An Inspiring Leader is authentic, operates from higher ground principles and makes their decisions coming from a place of love; whereas, a Controlling Leader upholds a facade, operates from lower ground principles and is coming from a place of fear.

The Inspiring Leader

The Controlling Leader

1) Is open to change and is always looking for better and easier ways of doing things. There is an ease about them; their decisions are based on the greater good of all and not solely on one individual.

1) Fights and resists change. They live in the past and because they have a need to control, often are working with hidden agendas to maintain this perceived control. They always seem stressed, constantly pushing themselves and pushing others.

2) Lives from their Soul and Spirit. The family or business becomes the vehicle in which they assist others in changing and growing, operating their life from a clear set of core values.

2) Lives from their ego and personality. They think they know it all and have a deep-seated need to be right. They use their family or business for self-recognition and they often resist soul searching or searching for a deeper meaning in life.

3) Is flexible, responsive and adaptable - connected to a bigger vision with “big picture thinking” and the awareness that “we are all in this together.” They are not threatened or intimidated by people with status or money and they accept 100% responsibility for their leadership style.

3) Is inflexible, reactive and positional - disconnected from the bigger picture focusing on “what’s in it for me.” They are threatened or intimidated by people with more money or a higher position or status. They do not take responsibility for their leadership style, but place fault on others and will ignore the situation when an apology is in order.

4) Acknowledges their strengths and weaknesses, surrounding themselves with people that complement their weaknesses and capitalize on their own strengths.

4) Denies their strengths and tries to cover up any weakness.

5) Is solution-oriented, helping others to identify and solve their problems.

5) Is problem-oriented, focusing on the negative and what’s wrong or who’s wrong and stays stuck in the problem.

6) Always gives the credit to others.

6) Will not only take the credit, but will do so even if it isn’t theirs to take.

7) Builds people up, empowers them to really go for it and spawn other authentic leaders. They provide direction and guidance and encourage others to believe in themselves.

7) Keeps people down below their own level wanting them to stay dependent and small, providing very little direction.

8) Unites the people in their family or organization. They pass on positive feedback that creates respect and unity among others.

8) Will spread gossip and negative feedback, creating division.

9) Creates an open forum for ideas to flow freely from everyone and encourages others to express their ideas.

9) Creates a forum for their own ideas, becoming defensive or reactive to other’s feedback.

10) Is emotionally connected to what is happening within the organization or family. They understand that quality time is not planned but can be spontaneous. They remember where they’ve come from and maintain compassion for others.

10) “Leads from the desk,” and is out of touch with what’s really going on within the dynamics and energy of the organization. They forget where they’ve come from and end up making decisions that can hurt people.

In our world today, there is a shift that is happening among individuals as well as in the business world, from being ego-driven to soul-driven in our personal and business missions. Awareness is the starting point to change. The next step is learning how to uncover the issue or the suppressed energy within us that was causing us to control in the first place. Once the issue has been correctly identified, we can then release it, should we choose to.

s a child I fantasized about treasure maps and developed a strong affection for the symbol “X demarcating the location of something that I really wanted. One of my favorite gestures for maintaining self awareness and actualization is to use physical anchors to remind me of what I want and what I want to let go of. Otherwise I lose track of what creates the healthiest version of myself due to the breakneck speed of life that creates lifestyleinduced dementia. If I don’t prioritize something I often times forget about it.

Ever since I was trained in neurolinguistic programming (NLP), I’ve utilized the power of anchoring. The process of anchoring is based on tying a thought with some form of action, along with emotion. One example of anchoring is the following. I’ll find myself scribbling an “X or an “O on the canvas of skin between the back of my thumb and forefinger to remind myself of something particularly important in my development relevant to the day at hand. I use an “X for what I want more of and an “O for what I want less of. You may think that you’ve graduated from such adolescent behaviors as writing on your hands but I beg you to reconsider.

ECSTATIC DANCE:

Move Your Body & Free Your Spirit By Steve Bollinger

T

he body has its own wisdom and intelligence of how to move and express itself. From a very early age we begin to experiment with moving around, crawling, then walking, then running and jumping. We become explorers of the world around us and all its wonders. We search out the joys of the world using our bodies, seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling and touching everything in sight. The body becomes the vehicle of our exuberance, our curiosity, our expressions of delight in our discovery of this playground called life. Also from an early age we are taught how to act, how to move or not move, how to behave. “Please quit jumping around; don’t touch that; stand over here and be still; can’t you please calm down?” Our enthusiasms are restrained, our zest for high activity is tempered, we become “domesticated, refined.” We accept this training and internalize these restrictions in our movement. We have been taught how to “behave.” Now, socially acceptable behavior has its place in getting along with others. But if it happens at the cost of losing out on the joys of expressing oneself, then this is something worth addressing. The wisdom of the body is still there waiting to be tapped. But that wisdom is overshadowed by the concepts and ideas we accept as adults. Ideas such as “I can’t dance; I am too uncoordinated; I will look silly; I have to look cool; I am too fat, skinny, old, young (whatever…)!” These are just the internalized adult versions of earlier scoldings to “be still.” Ecstatic dance is about letting go of these now self-imposed restrictions. It is a setting aside of the intellect and all it’s concepts of how not to move. It is an opening to new ways to express oneself in movement, to explore the world again, to have that passion once more, that love of life that you once had as a child. This dance is not a structured dance that follows a certain form. It is not taught really, but rather invited. It is an invitation to explore different rhythms, patterns and movements. It is an invitation to listen to your own body, which now becomes the teacher. It is an invitation to tap into that internal wisdom of how to express yourself through the body. It is about finding your own dance from within.

June 2008

26

There are certain factors that create a safe environment for this inner dancer to emerge. First off, this is not a social dance. It is held in an alcohol- and drug-free environment. Drugs and alcohol are for a different type of consciousness. This is dance consciousness. Second, it is not a place for people to come and observe others dance and make them feel self-conscious. Everyone participates in the dance. We all become co-creators of the energy on the dance floor. Third, the dance floor is to be respected as sacred space. It is a place for moving meditation that can take many forms. It can be deep, introspective inner work or high energy, extroverted dancing alone or with others. Ecstatic Dance is perhaps the oldest spiritual practice on the planet. Fourth, it is requested that there be no conversation in the dance. You wouldn’t chit-chat in a yoga or meditation class. The same goes for this dance. Talking is a distraction to those in deep inner work. Talking brings in the intellect, which we want to leave outside the dance. This dance is the abandonment of the intellect, forming a direct body-spirit connection experience. Hooting, hollering, animal sounds, energetic noises all OK. It is an invitation to push the envelope, to listen to the body, to tap into the body’s own intelligence that already knows how to do outrageous dancing. To break free of personal boundaries. To co-create fantastic energetics on the floor with other dancers. To play again with the wild abandon of a child. To revel in spirit and the joy of life while moving to the sounds of world grooves. Top 10 Reasons Not To Circumcise Your Son

LDG@H <eh0

aving a baby can bring so much joy to parents, but with that joy comes a lifetime of difficult decisions. What to feed them, how to discipline them, how to educate them and if you have a boy, whether or not to circumcise him. The practice of circumcision has become controversial, and it is no longer routinely recommended.

1. In the vast majority of cases there is no medical reason for circumcision and the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology do not endorse or recommend routine circumcision of the newborn. 2. Many insurance companies no longer

pay for the procedure.

3. Doing it for hygienic purposes as-

sumes that men and boys are incapable of properly caring for themselves.

4. It removes the most sensitive parts of the penis, and it removes ½ of the erogenous tissue of the penis. It could very likely negatively affect his level of sexual satisfaction and that of his future partners. 5. The conditions that circumcision is

said to prevent (urinary tract infections (UTIs), penile cancer) are so rare that large numbers of healthy boys would require circumcision to prevent one case. There is also no statistical difference in the amount of penile cancer reported in circumcising vs. non-circumcising nations.

6. Some religious leaders question the practice of religious circumcision and are speaking out against it. 7. It can interfere with breastfeeding, bonding and brain development. 8. He will no longer be looked at as different in the locker room. According to the National center for Health Statistics, the rate of circumcision has declined from 67% in 1995 to the current national rate of 57.4% and a rate of 31.7% in the western United States. 9. Because you wouldn’t do it to your daughter.

10. Because “looking like his dad” pales in comparison to the other nine reasons listed. Every child differs in appearance from its parents in some way. He may thank you someday for having the courage not to do to him what was done to you.

QUESTIONS OF SPIRITUALITY

ASTROLOGICAL ALCHEMY

The Astrology of Self-Transformationsm

Astrology

& Health By Robert Ayres

I

t is an ancient teaching that there is a fundamental connection between the stars and the well-being of the physical body. Manuscripts dating from 500 BC describe how to diagnose and treat illness based upon astrology. Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, described the correspondence between the stars and planets with the organs and parts of the body.

Astrology had a significant influence on the art of healing from ancient times up through the 1600’s. The study of the stars was considered an essential part of a physician’s training. This celestial perspective on a person’s health began to change in the 1700’s as the modern scientific method increasingly grew in influence. Today, astrological principles are again being investigated in the application, treatment and understanding of illness.

The creative spiritual hierarchies that express through the signs and the planets constitute forces, principles, ideas and functions that are structured within the cosmos and the human body. In astrological terminology, the signs and the planets rule the various parts of the body and their functions. The wholeness which is the cosmos is replicated in the wholeness of the functioning of the body. We must remember that the body is the vehicle for the indwelling soul and spirit to express through. The health and well-being of the body provide a strong foundation for a successful and fulfilling life. Listed briefly below are the traditional rulerships of the signs and planets with the corresponding parts of the body:

· Personal, Business, Relationship & Relocational consultations Robert Ayres

The Hermetic axiom of “As above, so below” formed the metaphysical and philosophical basis for connecting the stars and the medical arts. It was understood that the body was the microcosm of the macrocosm of the starry universe. The signs of the zodiac and the planets were intimately involved in the creation and formation of the body.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Pilates to improve your

SEX LIFE! By Kellie D’Elia-Laskin

P

ilates is a venerable form of exercise, which not only strengthens and rejuvenates your body, but your mind as well. Many residuals from this form of exercise are: improved circulation, better muscle control, increased flexibility and range of motion, improved balance and coordination, better concentration as well as reduction in stress levels. It also increases your heart rate, which naturally improves your circulation. This has also been linked to better skin tone and improved complexion. As you will learn with Pilates, when your mind and body work together in harmony, one’s sex life will be vastly improved. With the incorporation of concentration, control, centering, regulated breathing, fluidity and precision of movement, the Pilates work really begins to come alive. Therefore, so does the body. When done properly on a regular basis, this practice will help produce a longer, leaner and stronger body, thus allowing you to have more energy for the things you enjoy doing. This method of exercise focuses on the strength of your “core;” the muscles of the abdominals, low back, inner thighs and buttocks as well as the pubococcgyeal muscles (or PC muscles). The PC muscles are the muscles that run from the tailbone to the pubic bone lining the pelvic floor. They support and hold in place the abdominal and pelvic organs like a net. The better the tone in the PC muscles, the better the function of the lower organs of the body. To know you are contracting the correct muscles, find the muscles you use to stop the flow of urine or “hold it” and you will have found the PC muscles. Improving the strength of these muscles through exercise rapidly increases

June 2008

30

the flow of blood to the pelvis. Increased pelvic blood flow heightens sensitivity and is the hallmark of arousal. The P C m u sc l es , when well developed in men, ”can vastly improve genital circulation resulting in firmer erections, delayed ejaculation, intensified ejaculation, intensified orgasm and increased volume (of ejaculate).” Weak PC muscles in men may contribute to premature ejaculation. In women, strong PC muscles mean a better ability to contract these muscles during sex, heightening the sensual experience for both partners. In some cases, perhaps even allowing the woman to experience multiple orgasms for the first time. These muscles are engaged throughout a Pilates workout. Although you may be focused on your arms or legs in certain exercises; you are always keeping in mind the engagement of your “core” to stabilize the spine. Therefore, an effective Pilates workout would have you effectively increasing your awareness of your “center.” With better strength and stability of the “core,” back pain is alleviated, if not eradicated all together. Hence, Pilates can also promote better posture, yet another facet that leads to an overall sense of well-being. With time and proper training, you will most certainly reap the benefits of a better functioning body. This in turn rewards you with numerous health benefits, all of which culminate in the added bonus of having a better sex life. For more info, call Kellie D’Elia-Laskin (775) 747-6006. Simple Solutions for

The Cure For

Spring

Surviving Seasonal Allergies

Fever

Continued from page 11. For the second spray bottle, start with 4 oz. of filtered water, then add about a quarter teaspoon of raw honey, and about the same amount of sea salt. Mix well and put that fluid in the new empty nasal spray bottle. This mixture we’ll call your “Nasal Gatorade.” You now have two nasal spray bottles—one with peroxide, and one with your “Nasal Gatorade.” Mark these differently to avoid a mix-up. Several times a day, for instance while managing stress in the car at Reno’s famous siesta-long red lights, you can snort the peroxide into each nostril twice, and let it sting like the dickens for a few seconds (which happens only the first few times). Then blow your nose gently. Do this peroxide spray 4 or 5 times a day, and in a couple days you will breathe easier, sleep more deeply, and feel more comfortable in your sinuses than you have in a long time. After the peroxide spray has cleaned things up for a few days, start alternating the peroxide spray sessions with your “Nasal Gatorade.” This mixture will help those tissues stay moist and wellnourished.

The plan here is to prevent your sinus and throat passages from becoming dry and cracked. Our solar-oven parking lots make summertime auto errands very risky for thermal shock, and the moist areas of the throat and sinus can literally dry out and become burned. This hurts, and it lets harmful things into your bloodstream, where your immune system then has that much new stress to deal with.

Over 200 tomatoes produced off of a single plant!

By keeping your sensitive inside membranes clean and comfortable, you will have a stronger immune system as a barrier to protect you. If you are breathing and resting better and eating a healthier diet, you might then have an even better personality to share with us so we can better manage our own stress. Thanks in advance! This spray regimen will sterilize and remove toxic mucus from the deeper membranes of your sinus and throat. Those pollens, chemicals, solvents, and dust particles that we have agreed to call “atmosphere” have been neutralized and rinsed away from the dried mat sticking to your tissues.

Gone with this is the constant stress of allergens on these membranes that causes inflammation and irritation. Also, the protective functions of your ciliary hairs and mucus-secreting membranes will return to their normal juicy state. Depending on what level of air quality comes with your lifestyle and occupation, you will want to use this spray procedure regularly to keep the sinuses clean and strong.

HEALTH DENTAL

A Sexy Smile By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

A

great smile is a wonderful, attractive beginning for human contact and sexuality. But behind the smile, the health of our teeth can have vast repercussions on our sexuality and the health of our reproductive organs. Teeth that have been neglected or improperly treated, or bad breath caused by bacteria, can certainly be unattractive and indicate poor vitality and specific illnesses. The body’s vital force (also referred to as orgone, energy, chi, prana, etc.) and all aspects of our being and health are reflected in the teeth. So emotional well-being, good pelvic orgasmic energy, circulation, hormonal balance, nutritional supplementation and oral hygiene are interrelated factors. And with aging or a loss of vitality, the teeth and all their structures can go downhill quickly. German doctors in the last century developed a theory that certain teeth relate to specific diseases, meridians, organs, hormones, spinal segments, joints, muscles, sense organs, etc. Similar “body maps” have been identified in other systems of medicine. For example, reflexology points for the entire body are found in the hands, feet and ears; acupuncture meridians also map out energy channels that relate to various organ systems; and nerve pathways from the spine create communication links throughout the body. Such energetic connections definitely include and affect sexuality. Drs. Voll, Kramer, Adler, Gleditch, Rau and others found similar relationships and body maps in the mouth. These researchers developed charts to help practitioners relate dental disease to distant sites in the body. Many patients with cancers or other diseases of the reproductive organs, genital tract or breast have had decay, disease or root canals in corresponding teeth. Symptoms of dental disease are headaches, neurological disorders (numbness, tingling, electrical currents in the face, head or extremities, visual disturbances), chronic sinus infections, facial pain (trigeminal neuralgia—tic douloureux), heart irregularities, panic, anxiety, depression, joint pain and most commonly, chronic fatigue—send a severe blow to the libido. No one is sexy when exhausted and the kidney/adrenal chi (energy) is gone.

Developing that Hollywood Smile Diet is an important factor in an appealing smile. Weston Price, DDS, conducted a dental study at the beginning of the last century on the effect of diet. He visited aboriginal people, photographed their dental arches and noted their rate of tooth decay before and after going off their native diet and consuming refined foods and sugars. After two generations, the dental arch went from very wide jaws with perfect tooth alignment to narrow jaws with an awful array of crooked teeth. Decay rate went from one cavity for every 10 people to 10 cavities per person. Nutrition also has a serious impact on the health of the gums and on the pleasantness of the breath. Bad breath has broken up many relationships and stopped others from ever getting started. It is a complex problem and can arise from several sources. Chronically constipated people with leaky gut syndrome often have a strong fecal smell, which comes from the lungs. Streptococcusfecalis (which smells fecal) can also grow in the mouth. Infected gums and other periodontal illnesses are very common, especially with aging. Pockets and crypts that develop next to the teeth need attention before loss of teeth or bone occurs or extensive surgery and bone grafts become necessary. Two-time Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling felt that most humans suffer from sub-clinical scurvy. Scurvy (severe vitamin C deficiency) used to claim the lives of sailors on long voyages and Northern Europeans at the end of winter when fresh food ran out. Humans, primates and guinea pigs are the only animals that don’t make vitamin C in their liver: A 150 pound goat makes about 14,000 mg. of vitamin C every day. The first symptoms of scurvy are bleeding and receding gums and loose teeth, which eventually fall out if not treated. Vitamin C is very important for connective tissue and maintaining strong capillary structure. Many doctors suggest patients take at least 5,000 mg of buffered vitamin C per day, a dose which heals numerous periodontal problems. The father of Orthomolecular Psychiatry, Abram Hoffer, M.D., of Victoria, Canada, has researched many important uses of niacin (vitamin B3)—including the treatment of periodontal www.HBMag.com

disease. Lack of sufficient niacin causes red blood cells to become stiff and inflexible. Capillaries, the body’s smallest blood vessels, are a third the size of the red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues of the body. Adequate amounts of niacin assure red blood cell flexibility to let them fold into the capillaries and allow gum tissue to be oxygenated and repair normally. For people with deep pockets next to the teeth, treatment with a Water Pik with one drop of Citrotida P (grapefruit seed extract) in the reservoir helps to reduce infection and encourage healing. Vigorous brushing, good mineral intake and avoidance of sugar can all help to eliminate pockets that eventually cause loss of teeth and ongoing halitosis. Most people faced with the prospect of straightening their smile are unaware that there are important choices in methods. Regular orthodontia—which waits until the child’s jaw has mostly matured and uses fixed bands and nickel-titanium wires to pull the teeth into position—can have many drawbacks. The bicuspid teeth are frequently removed to allow space for the teeth to be pulled into alignment, which can cause the jaw to collapse in later life. The torsion of the pull on the jaw can put unnatural stress on the head bones and cause headaches and personality changes. This method sets up strong electrical currents in the mouth, sometimes causing severe behavioral changes. George Crozat, D.D.S., a New Orleans dentist who did most of his work from the 1920s - 1960s, developed a method of orthodontia that was much more connected to orthopedics (bone development). It uses a non-force technique in which gold wires of complex shapes are looped around the teeth to encourage the body to adopt new jaw alignment gently and gradually. He started the process much earlier in children, around the age of five or six, and widened the dental arch and jaw first to allow the teeth room to fit without removing them. Although it takes about a third longer than regular orthodontia, this method supports the lips and gives a beautiful Hollywood smile. It also can widen the dental arch of adults, which is generally not thought possible. The procedure requires extensive training

and skill, but it is very worthwhile to find a dentist who can do it. References: 1. George Meinig, DDS, Root Canal Cover-Up, 1993 2. Weston Price, DDS, The Price of Root Canals, 1994 3. Hal Huggins, DDS, It’s All In Your Head, 1985

Jungian Dreamwork Series:

The Anima & Animus By Andy Drymalski, EdD

I

n last month’s issue we examined the shadow. As its name suggests, the shadow is that part of our personality that we tend to keep in the dark, concealed from our own and others’ awareness. Because the shadow is composed primarily of undeveloped characteristics common to one’s gender, it is symbolized in dreams by dream figures the same sex as the dreamer (e.g., a female in a woman’s dream represents her shadow). Carl Jung observed, as have many others before and since, that the human personality possesses an androgynous background; it contains symbolically masculine and symbolically feminine attributes. The masculine side of a woman’s personality he called the animus. The animus is symbolized in women’s dreams by male figures. The feminine side of a man’s personality he called the anima. The anima is symbolized in men’s dreams by female figures.

on the development of the ego and integration of the shadow. At mid-life and beyond, the unconscious places increasing emphasis on the rounding out of the personality through integration of our other half--the anima or animus.

The anima and animus can be negative or positive, hurtful or helpful. The negative anima can persuade a man to be irresponsible or lazy, while his positive anima can encourage him to feel more fully or become more loving. The negative animus can persuade a woman to be overly self-critical and judgmental, while her positive animus can encourage her to make bold and courageous changes in her outer life. In most cultures masculinity has tended to be associated with law, logic, leadership, independence, spiritual and religious ideas. Femininity has been more frequently associated with feeling, relationship, nurturance, sensitivity, and nature/earth. Of course, these are generalizations; most of us will express all of these qualities to some degree. In fact, Jung maintained that the growth of the personality demands the development and integration of these complementary aspects of our being. He also observed that in youth through mid-life, personality growth tends to focus

A woman in her fifties dreams: “I’m with a drunken man. We’d been drinking the night before but he’s still drunk. We enter a restaurant and the host is a man that recognizes me. He says he catered a party I had a year or so ago. My friend is embarrassing me. As we leave the host holds my hand and says it was nice to see me again. My drunk friend gets jealous. We leave there and get in the car. The road is icy and we skid all over. I take over driving. A police officer stops me and tells me that my mother is in the hospital. She had a heart attack. I go to the hospital and comfort a girlfriend who is sobbing uncontrollably....” This dream contains both positive and negative animus figures. The restaurant host is an embodiment of the dreamer’s positive animus. He behaves in a caring and supportive way towards her. As host and caterer he also represents a source of emotional and spiritual nourishment. This is the nature of the positive animus in a woman’s life. Her drunk friend, on the other hand, is a negative animus figure. In her outer life the dreamer had a problem with alcohol. He symbolizes this destructive tendency. At a more fundamental level, he also symbolizes the thoughts and attitudes that keep her from properly valuing and honoring herself. Notice, too, that he is jealous of the positive animus/host. The negative animus does not want to relinquish its influence upon her life. www.HBMag.com

The dreamer gets in the car with her drunk friend driving. Symbolically, she is living life through the viewpoint of her negative animus. (If the drunk friend was an actual boyfriend, the dream might indicate that she is letting him run her life.) The road is icy and they skid all over. In other words, going through life “under the influence” of the negative animus (or anima) can spin you out of control. Water is a symbol of the unconscious, but frozen water can suggest frozen feelings. At this point of the dream the dreamer takes a very positive step: she takes over driving. This is an act of becoming more conscious and of taking more responsibility for her life and decisions. She is then stopped by a police officer and is informed of her mother’s heart attack. Her mother probably represents the feeling and nurturing dimension of her psyche. The heart attack suggests an injury to her feeling capacity, for the heart is the symbolic center of one’s emotional life. Living under the domination and belittling attitude of her negative animus, is it any wonder that her inner feminine, symbolized by her mother and sobbing friend, is suffering?

know, what are your associations to that person? Does he/she like you, care about you, give you encouragement, or does he/ she make you feel bad about yourself, belittle you, or persuade you to waste your time? How are you relating to this person in your dream? How do you relate to this person in your outer life? Are you standing up to the negative anima/animus, or colluding with it? Are you embracing the positive anima/animus or are you rejecting it? Can you identify specific beliefs or attitudes in yourself that are represented by these dream figures? The greatest factor determining the nature and quality of our outer relationships is the nature and quality of our relationship to our own psyche, especially the shadow, anima/animus, and the Self. In their most positive and developed aspect, the anima and animus are the embodiments of our soul, or spirit. When our relationship to our soul is cooperative and loving, the soul serves as a guide to the Self, the spiritual core of the personality. When we are disconnected from our soul or at odds with it in some way, we experience what shamans have called a “loss of soul.” Loss of soul is often manifested in modern society by depression or an addiction. So keep your soul close, pay attention to your dreams.

Loss of soul is often manifested in modern society by depression or an addiction.

Through this dream, the unconscious has symbolized for the dreamer her underlying psychic struggle and has offered a path to healing. She must become more conscious of the competing/conflicting attitudes within herself, receive the nourishment of those that are life-giving, stand against those that are harmful, and reconnect with her deeper feelings and feminine instincts. Like slaying a dragon, these will not be easy tasks. Fortunately, she has an ally in her positive animus, whose wisdom and helpfulness will likely be reflected in some of the people in her outer life. When working with the anima and animus figures of your dreams, try to determine their helpfulness or hurtfulness towards you and your personal growth. If they are symbolized by a person you

SPICES HERBS &

Black Cohosh: The Safe Herb For Hot Flashes, Osteoporosis and Other Menopausal Symptoms By John Morgenthaler

M

ost American women reach menopause between the ages of 45 to 55, but menopause-like symptoms can begin at least ten years earlier. “Menopause is often heralded by the onset of a change in menstrual flow or skipped menstrual periods,” says Christiane Northrup, M.D., bestselling author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom (Bantam Books, July 1994), and The Wisdom of Menopause (Bantam Books, July 2001), and a past president of the American Holistic Medical Association. “Some women simply stop having periods and have no symptoms whatsoever. Others experience hot flashes, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, and fuzzy thinking,” she adds. It is these annoying problems that have given menopause its bad reputation. So, what’s a woman to do?

Black cohosh has been used as a female tonic for hundreds of years. Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) was used by Europeans and numerous Native American tribes for “female problems” long before the New World was settled. Native Americans also used it for arthritis, diarrhea and snake bites, as well as coughs and other pulmonary conditions.

June 2008

40

Black cohosh was first listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia in 1830 under the name black snakeroot, and was introduced to the medical community in 1844 when Dr. John King prescribed it for rheumatism and nervous disorders. It was a prominent herb in midwifery practice, and the Eclectic Physicians used it in the mid-nineteenth century for a number of Ob/Gyn problems including endometriosis, menstrual irregularities, and to allay miscarriage and increase breast milk production. During the past 40 years, black cohosh has been used in Europe as an herbal pharmaceutical by more than 1.5 million women, and scientific research has recently demonstrated that black cohosh is a promising therapy for menopausal symptoms. What are menopausal hot flashes? Hot flashes affect 70 to 85 percent of all perimenopausal women. What exactly happens in your body to make you throw the covers off in the middle of a winter night, only to find that you’re freezing and wanting to bundle up a few minutes later? And why do some women have an intense heat spread over their face, scalp, back and chest accompanied by redness and perspiration? According to Dr. Northrup, hot flashes are triggered by falling estrogen and rising follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Most women have them just before or during the menstrual periods during perimenopause. They become more frequent during menopause-when your period ceasesand this can last for several years.

www.HBMag.com

Besides hormonal factors, external factors can impact the intensity and duration of a woman’s hot flashes. Stress, anxiety, a poor diet loaded with carbohydrates, caffeine, sugar, and alcohol, and lack of exercise can all exacerbate menopausal symptoms. How does black cohosh work? There have been many theories about how black cohosh works, but exactly how and what it is that makes it work are still being determined. Up until now, the theory has been that it contains phytoestrogens that bind to estrogen receptor sites, thus inducing an estrogen-like effect. We now know from recent studies that black cohosh is technically a “Selective Estrogen-Receptor Modulator” (SERM). This means it selectively mimics estrogen in the brain and bone, but not in uterusor estrogen-dependent cancers. In one study it compared favorably with raloxifene (a SERM sold by prescription for osteoporosis), though with less potency. It’s likely something in black cohosh is interacting with some part of the estrogen signaling pathway, but not the estrogen receptors. This gives the benefit of some of estrogen’s good effects, without the negative effects.

Lose weight

The bottom line seems to be that black cohosh does not stimulate estrogen receptors, which can promote cancer. This makes it a very safe alternative for osteoporosis and hot flashes. Who should use black cohosh? Although the herb has been used traditionally for hundreds of years, the recent scientific research validates its effectiveness and proves its safety. Many women never have hot flashes, and for those who do, the annoyance lasts only a few years. BUT, because black cohosh exerts positive effects on the brain and bone-which have nothing to do with hot flashes-every menopausal woman can benefit from using it long term to help prevent osteoporosis and mental changes. Additionally, perimenopausal women can use it safely long term to prevent symptoms of PMS and future bone health and menopausal symptoms.

Is black cohosh safe for everyone? So far, we know that black cohosh is not recommended for pregnant women. For general use, and even among women who have had breast cancer, black cohosh appears to be extremely safe. According to Dr. B Kligler, a researcher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in

Improve your health

New York, “Adverse effects are extremely uncommon, and there are no known significant adverse drug interactions.” How will black cohosh make me feel? Taking black cohosh is a gentle way to naturally treat menopausal symptoms and deal with some of the physical and emotional stresses unique to perimenopausal and menopausal women. In addition to getting relief for hot flashes, night sweats, and other menopausal symptoms, women typically report they feel less irritable, have a clearer mind, calmer emotions, fewer mood swings and better sleep. Degenerative Knees By Frank Shallenberger, MD, HMD

Degenerating Joints

Treatment with Ozone

Why do joints become degenerated? There are two reasons you need to know. The first has to do with a lack of synovial fluid. Synovial fluid is a thick, stringy fluid found in joints which lubricates and cushions them during movement, and protects the joint cartilage from damage. Synovial fluid is made by cells called fibroblasts, which are found in the membranes lining the joint. The problem is that with age, these fibroblasts often stop making enough synovial fluid. The result is increasing trauma to the joint cartilage.

Prolozone is derived from the Latin word Aproli@ which means to regenerate or rebuild, and the word “ozone.” Ozone therapy is called Prolozone therapy because the treatment uses localized injections of ozone to regenerate new tissue in areas where it has become damaged. Ozone has been used in medicine for over seventy years. It is a naturally occurring molecule that consists of three atoms of oxygen. Oxygen atoms usually combine in pairs, because they are much more stable that way. The third atom of oxygen present in ozone gives it a much greater capacity for inducing healing than any other naturally occurring substance. Prolozone therapy uses the power of oxygen to stimulate the body to heal itself. It is excellent for all forms of musculo-skeletal and joint pain including chronic back and neck pain, degenerated discs, plantar fasciitis, and arthritic hips and knees.

The second part of the problem has to do with the cartilage itself. Inside all joints is a layer of cartilage covering the joint. It is the cartilage that allows the joint to move smoothly and without pain. Joint cartilage becomes damaged every day as a result of weight bearing, walking, and running. As the cartilage becomes damaged, it is repaired by cells called chondroblasts, which literally regenerate new cartilage. As long as these cells are working properly, they will continue to replace the damaged cartilage, and keep the joint functioning well. But just like with the fibroblasts, as we get older, chondroblasts don’t work as well, and the result is a steady loss of cartilage lining. Often this gets so severe that the x-rays show almost no cartilage at all, and the doctor starts talking about joint replacement surgery.

The Dangers Of Arthritis Medicine A third reason for cartilage damage has to do with the medications called NSAIDS, which are used to treat the symptoms of arthritis. NSAID’s is short for “non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.” They are used for musculo-skeletal pain, particularly the pain of arthritis. Common names include ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and the latest versions called cox-2 inhibitors (Celebrex, Vioxx, Bextra). Ironically enough, regular use of NSAIDs results in microbleeding in the joints which causes further damage to the cartilage. Also, make no mistake about it. These drugs are dangerous. 200,000 hospitalizations and up to 20,000 deaths due to NSAID-induced stomach and intestinal bleeding occur each year. And that’s not all. According to the results of a Danish study presented at the American Heart Associations scientific sessions in Dallas on Nov. 13, 2005, taking NSAIDs increases the risk of death after a heart attack. The higher the dose, the higher the risk of death. In the case of Vioxx, the risk of death was more than five times greater in those who took the drug compared to those who didn’t. Vioxx and another NSAIDs, Bextra, have already been taken from the market. Similar concerns have been raised about Celebrex and naproxen.

Degenerative Knee Case Study: Dan Dan, a former football player, is the owner and manager of a very successful deli in the San Francisco bay area. He injured his knees as a young man playing college football; those injuries were now coming back to haunt him now. For the past several years his knees had been hurting more and more, to the point that he was starting to dread going to work. As a deli owner, he spent most his day on his feet; the only way he could do this was to take pain medication. He didn’t like it, but it was all he knew. Dan had legs like tree trunks – yet when a strength test was performed on his legs, he was extremely weak. The pain in his knees was so great that he couldn’t perform a simple squat without falling to the ground. Dan had tried ibuprofen, Celebrex, and Relafen. He was also taking a supplement that contained glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. But nothing was helping. His doctors told him his cartilage was almost completely gone and that the only solution was to have knee replacements. After Dan’s examination and several tests, a simple treatment was diagnosed. No pain pills and no surgery; just ozone therapy. Dan’s treatments consisted of a combined injection of ozone, vitamin B12, hyaluronic acid, and an anti-inflammatory homeopathic. He had six injections, spaced two weeks apart. His knees began to improve immediately after the first treatment. After the second treatment, he was able to stop all medication. And after the sixth treatment, he was completely symptom free. He continues to do well even three years later. For more info, contact Dr. Shallenberger at 775-884-3990 or nvcenter@nvbell.net. Kitty-Cat

Introductions By Michael Moyssidis

PETS When you feed the cats, make sure you feed them later than usual so that both cats are seriously hungry. Feed the new cat in the crate, placed in the existing eating area. Over the course of several mealtimes, move the existing cat’s bowl closer and closer to the crate. Soon both cats will be used to eating with one another.

Editor’s Note: June is “Adopt a Shelter Cat” month. If you would like to give a good home to a cat that needs one, please visit your local animal shelter and pick out one or more new furry friends. Should your residence already be graced by the presence of an existing feline friend and you wish to add another, be sure to read this article.

Cats take time to get to know any strangers, and this is the same whether the stranger is animal or human. When you first bring your new cat home, your other animals may be curious. However, the introductions should not be made until your new cat is comfortable. It is also important to remember that your animals may take time to get to know each other, and they may not like each other at first. Not to worry.

Once you feel that the cats are doing well with each other, you can introduce them openly, without crates. When you consummate the introduction, be sure it is in a room where there are no hiding places or clutter to eliminate convenient hiding. For many cats, the introduction will go off without a hitch. Sometimes, however, cats can be fussy and it may take a little more time for them to mellow out. Again, no worries. If your cats are still having issues getting along, you may want to keep the new cat in the safe room when you are not there to supervise. Eventually, they will get used to each other and live peacefully in the same home. Make each introduction short and to the point until you see all aggression subside. For more info about cat care visit catcareinfosite.com

The introduction needs to be made in a safe room with your new cat in a crate. Bring your existing cat into the room and put him/her on the floor near the crate. There will probably be a lot of sniffing and investigating around the crate. If there is a lot of posturing, hissing or growling, you need to distract the free cat, so that they both can calm down. After about 10 minutes, let your existing cat leave the room.

Is Getting Older a Drag? Feeling Overwhelmed and Tired from Aging? Having More Pain?

FIGHT BACK!

In the next meeting, put your old cat in the crate and allow the new cat to roam freely in the room. If the cats are civil to one another, praise them both greatly. Then repeat the same pattern, moving the crate from room to room, alternating which cat is in the crate. Make sure that you give your old cat a lot of praise so that he or she does not feel threatened by the newcomer. After several moves from room to room, the cats should be tolerant of one another.

sugary counter part, but sweetened with saccharin, a calorie-free artificial sweetener. This appealed to an increasingly calorie-conscious public, beginning to struggle with weight gain. Over the next 45 years, consumption of diet beverages rose dramatically in the US, but so did the obesity rate! In fact, an 8-year study conducted by Sharon Fowler, MPH at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, TX produced some alarming statistics. Among soda drinkers in the study, the obesity rate was actually higher in the diet soda drinkers than in those who drank regular soda. “There was a 41% increased risk of being overweight for every diet soft drink a person consumes each day,” Fowler reported. The University of Texas study begs the question, is there a connection between diet soda consumption and weight gain/obesity? If so, how can a beverage containing few to zero calories actually cause weight gain? Several studies have produced quite conclusive data, which in turn spawned interesting hypotheses about how diet soda may be thwarting our collective attempts to shed pounds. One study of note at Purdue University’s Ingestive Behavior Research Center, involved 2 groups of rats, one fed yogurt sweetened with regular glucose (table sugar), and the other, yogurt sweetened artificially with saccharin. Surprisingly, the saccharin-sweetened yogurt group consumed more calories and gained more weight than the sugar group. The physicians conducting the study concluded that artificial sweetener disrupts the body’s satiety mechanisms controlling its ability to tell when it has had enough to eat. Because the sensations of sweetness being sent to the brain are not accompanied by the typical calories, the body no longer signals satiation in response to the sweetness sensations triggered by the taste buds.

June 2008

44

Ultimately, this means that the body cannot determine accurately how many calories have been consumed, which may cause us to crave even more calories. This is because the sweet taste stimulus is sent to the brain when we eat sweetened food products, causing our reflexes to get ready to receive the calories. When the calories don’t arrive, as with artificially sweetened products, our system gets confused, creating a void which we may try to fill with calories from other foods. Though some may question these findings, no one can argue with the fact that diet soda can be harmful in a number of ways. Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN, NP points out that all carbonated beverages contain high levels of phosphoric acid, which effectively leach calcium from our systems. This has obvious bone density implications, especially in women. When high levels of sodium and caffeine, a diuretic, are present, diet sodas actually DE-HYDRATE you! They are not the thirst-quenching cold, zero-calorie soda we have in our minds. Keep these findings in mind when you select your next beverage, especially if you are trying to lose weight. Your best choice may just be water, the original thirst-quenching beverage! References: 1. THE CALORIE MY TH: 7 Keys To A Fat Burning Metabolism

By Virginia Parsons, MS, CCHT, CTLC

W

ith warmer weather and summer months drawing near, many people are talking about losing weight by cutting calories. Beware of this weight loss approach, as it may backfire on you. If you’ve tried diet after diet, from starvation to low-fat, to Atkins, liquid diets, fad diets, and prepared meal diets, and you feel like a failure, it is NOT your fault. These diet programs emphasize weight loss at the expense of lean muscle loss. Such diets may work short term, but most dieters gain the weight back within a year. Not only that, many become “fatter” than when they started the diet. How can that be? Our bodies are genetically wired to slow down metabolism and hold on to weight during periods of caloric restriction. According to the World Health Organization, a diet under 2100 calories for average men and under 1800 calories for average women is classified as a “Starvation diet.” Low-calorie diets promote weight loss from lean muscle tissue while sparing body fat. Sustained caloric restriction slows the metabolism by up to 15%. So when you go off the diet, your sluggish metabolism puts the weight back on quickly in the form of body fat, making it even harder the next time you diet. This endless cycle of yo-yo dieting is a metabolism nightmare. Each time you lose weight and gain it back, you lose more lean muscle mass and gain back weight in the form of body fat. Did you know that body fat burns up to 70% fewer calories than lean muscle? Is it any wonder that some chronic dieters eat less and weigh more than those who seem to eat whatever they want and stay forever trim? That’s because their metabolism burns fuel like a hot furnace; a dieter’s furnace is in slow burn, survival mode. Less than 7% of weight loss attempts are successful. The typical dieter “ultimately gains 5 pounds over and above his/her starting weight for every diet he/she goes on.” Research indicates that a calorie IS NOT a calorie when it is metabolized. A study from the Harvard School of Public Health found low-fat diets of 1500 calories lost significantly less weight than did low-carb diets of 1800 calories. Over a 12-week period the low-carb group consumed 25,000 more calories, but lost on average 3 more pounds than the low-fat 1500 calorie group. Another study by Harvard Professor David Ludwig found that the type of calorie consumed for breakfast can affect the metabolism and the amount of calories consumed later in the day. Those who ate instant or steel-cut oatmeal for breakfast consumed 81% and 51% more food, respectively, later in the day the group who ate an omelet for breakfast. It appears that the type of food consumed impacts the messages your genes send to your metabolism. Food is more than just energy or calories; food actually June 2008

communicates with your DNA to impact your metabolism. So, before you go on yet another diet to lose weight, consider these 7 Keys to developing a Fat-Burning Metabolism: 1. Eat a natural, whole-food based diet consisting of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, legumes, and healthy fats such as Olive Oil, in quantities that exceed your basal metabolic rate of 1800 calories per day for the average woman and 2100 calories per day for the average man. 2. Eat a high protein breakfast, such as a protein shake or eggs. 3. Eat food high in fiber to normalize blood sugar. 4. Increase your lean muscle mass with interval and resistance exercise. 5. Eliminate Sweet beverages. Drink lots of filtered water. 6. Don’t skip meals. Eat regularly and stop eating at least 2-3 hours before bedtime, when your metabolism naturally slows down. 7. De-stress your life with deep breathing & a positive outlook. Remember that your body is a sacred vessel for your journey through life. Often times we put better fuel in our cars than we do in our own bodies. How can we expect them to run well without the proper fuel? Fuel your metabolism with these 7 principles and enjoy the journey to a leaner, healthier you! References: 1. Hyman, Mark, MD. Ultra-Metabolism 2006 2. Lieberman, Shari, Ph.D. Dare to Lose 2002 3. HEALTH FAMILY

Does Your Child Get The Right Nutrition? By Liz Karger

D

o your kids eat the way you ate as a child? Would your grandparents recognize the processed imitation food that is commonly consumed by our children? More than likely any grandparent who read the ingredient label for the bread our kids want to use to make their sandwiches, would think it was chemical soup with an added “fortified” flour substance. It’s nearly unrecognizable as simple bread: good quality unbleached flour, yeast, salt, honey, butter, water. What’s happened to our diet and when did real, whole food become past tense? Today’s food experience is a constant stream of news stories on nutritional research, miracle diets, “super” foods, good fats, bad fats, low cholesterol, food pyramids, and confusion. Aggressive food marketing has filled our supermarket shelves with “food-like” products labeled as fat free, low sodium, cholesterol free, fortified with omega-3, calcium, vitamin D, natural flavor, hormone-free, and every other possible nutritional fad. Every food product has been engineered to increase shelf life, flavor, texture, appeal, ease of

manufacturing, and profit margin. Industrial farming and food mass production has further reduced the nutritional value of our food supply by stripping the soil of essential micronutrients and minerals. The statistics associated with poor childhood nutrition are frightening. It’s hard to believe that nearly one out of three US children are overweight, borderline overweight, or likely to develop type 2 diabetes! Poor nutrition during the developmental years can retard growth and delay sexual maturation. Your kid’s nutrition gives a foundation for good health for the rest of their lives and could help to prevent health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and even osteoporosis later in life. So what can you do to improve the nutritional value of your children’s diet? Use common sense and a multi-faceted approach to give your kids a better foundation.

First: Give yourself peace of mind by

getting the best nutritional supplement you can find and make sure your child

June 2008

46

takes it daily. Many kids look forward to a daily treat of chocolate milk with his vitamins and minerals. A high-quality supplement can be identified by the following: voluntary adherence to US GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) standards to ensure purity, potency, and bioavailability; a balanced formula with a broad range of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and micronutrients; positive rankings by credible third party sources such as a listing in the Physicians’ Desk Reference; endorsement by organizations with rigorous standards such as Olympic teams or professional athletic associations.

Second: Dietary supplements cannot

replace a healthy diet. Remove snacks and refined foods with empty calories from your shelves– they are expensive and an enemy of long term healthy habits. Snack foods often contain unhealthy levels and kinds of fats, cholesterol, dietary fiber, and sodium that can multiply their negative nutrient value. Make them a treat, not a standard menu item. Limit

www.HBMag.com

carbohydrate-rich foods that are rapidly digested and absorbed into your bloodstream, such as products made with processed white flour, sugary drinks (watch out for corn syrup!). Even white rice, potatoes and apple juice should be limited because these foods have a high-glycemic index – fast conversion to blood sugar . Diets reliant on high-glycemic foods cause unhealthy spikes in your child’s hunger response and appetite and are now associated with the development of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions that put your kids at risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Last: Hungry kids eat what’s in the cupboard or refrigerator. Get as much whole grain, nuts, beans and fresh vegetables and fruits into your household as possible. Do you have room for a few plants in your yard or a container? Kids love to eat the things they grow! Watermelon and tomatoes are fun and easy to grow and will help the family budget by growing food free from toxins and pesticides. Fresh food that has the shortest time in transport and storage before it reaches your plate is highest in nutrient value. Support local agriculture by going to the farmers market – they are a fun and ecologically responsible way to get the best quality food for your family. Your kids are watching you--show them how to eat for good health by eating real food! Here is a fun summer recipe that models healthy eating for your children: Grilled Fruit Kebabs with Yogurt Ice Cream With summer coming, your kids will love eating fruit from the BBQ. Lightly grilled fruits and a topping of yogurt or ice cream makes a healthy and refreshing dessert for any cookout. Here’s a guilt free and fun recipe your children will love this summer. INGREDIENTS: Chunks of your favorite fruit: pineapple, bananas, mango, peaches, stemmed strawberries, grapes Wood or metal skewers Vanilla yogurt, frozen yogurt, or ice cream PREPARATION: Thread the fruit chunks onto skewers and grill each kebab about 5 minutes turning only once. Kids of appropriate age can help with this safely. To serve, push the fruit from skewers onto dessert plates and serve with a dollop of vanilla yogurt or a scoop of frozen yogurt or ice cream. Yum.

Growing Beef

Naturally By Bruce Gallio, MHP

Editor’s Note: After March’s “Why Meat Gets the Heat” article on clean, humane animal husbandry versus traditional “feed lot” practices, Healthy Beginnings received inquiries wanting more information about organic beef and where to find it. To answer these questions, the following article written by a local, natural beef rancher addresses important nutritional and quality-of-life differences between these practices.

T

he conventional methods used by large beef producers for putting meat on the table involve an intense plan to put a lot of weight on an animal in a short time period. Unfortunately this is not easily done with natural methods.

• All Natural, Local, Angus Beef - 100% Grass Fed - 45 Day Corn Finished • No Antibiotics or Hormones

Place orders now for fall!

775-852-2170

bcrangus@clearwire.net To maintain quality, orders are limited.

Conventional methods involve changing the biology of the ruminant cow and adding growth hormones. Although this method provides a tender, flavorful steak, it changes the nutritional components of the meat that we ingest, and significantly affects our human biology. Issues such as the treatment of the animals during the process, environmental impact of nonlocal farming, and the depersonalization of our food source only add to the negative effects on our earth. Mass market and feedlot beef finishing involve: • Taking a cow whose normal diet is high roughage (grass) and feeding it a high-starch, low-roughage diet (corn). This changes the function of its stomachs creating an acidic environment in a normally ph neutral environment. • Growth hormones are also added which increases the size of the animal; unfortunately these exogenous hormones are passed on to the consumer in the form of a very large steak containing trace hormones. • The feed lot is a cramped environment where the animals all stand ankle-deep in feces, creating the perfect venue for opportunistic infections like E. coli. Antibiotics must be given prophylactically to control these infections, which creates a significant problem with drug resistance. It can ultimately lead to ground beef recalls because of E. coli that can now live in the human GI tract. • As a process, these steps reduce, if not eliminate, a good portion of the omega 3

June 2008

48

fatty acids, vitamin E and other valuable nutrients that otherwise would be found in red meat. • Moreover, some percentage of massmarket beef that ends up in your hamburger comes from older cows, or cows that can no longer produce a calf because of some undiagnosed pathology. This animal will be ground up in a huge grinder along with thousands of other animals of varying quality. And remember – this could still be certified Angus Beef. There are, however, alternative methods that will allow the consumer to enjoy high quality meat that is tender, safe, hormone and antibiotic free, and has been locally raised with low stress methods and minimal environmental impact. Grass fed beef is a good option: • There are no feedlots or growth hormones; the animals are grazed on open pasture, and many of the nutrients, such as omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin E are preserved. • With some research the consumer can buy from a local producer, and a humane natural environment can be found, thus reducing the environmental impact. • However, the potential downside to purely grass fed beef is that without any graining (finishing) the meat can taste strong and more gamey. For some consumers, this is what they are looking for. Another option is to modify the conventional finishing process: • By eliminating the feedlot and never taking the animals off of grass pasture, but

slowly augmenting their natural feed with high quality grains for only 45 days one is able to preserve the natural digestive biology of the cow. • With these modifications, we can reduce the acidosis and E. coli and therefore eliminate antibiotic use. • This also preserves greater than 50% of the natural Omega 3 fatty acids. • This process also adds a moderate amount of fat content to the meat thus creating a more natural beef flavor, deeper and more complex than store bought but yet not strong or gamey. We are fortunate enough in the Reno area to have both of these options readily available. S

ummer has arrived! Warmer weather draws us outside and we spend more time enjoying outdoor summer activities. This means the need to protect our skin, so we head to the store for sunscreens and sunblocks. There are many brands of sunscreen with varying SPF (Sun Protection Factor) numbers, ingredients and claims. How do you know which ones provide the best protection? Are there any health concerns connected with ingredients in these products? The Environmental Working Group reports “Our comprehensive scientific review indicates that 86% of 1,015 sunscreen products offer inadequate protection from the sun, or contain ingredients with significant safety concerns.” This assessment is based on a review of nearly 400 scientific studies, industry models of sunscreen efficacy, and toxicity and regulatory information from nearly 60 government, academic, and industry databases. The following are some of the reasons for these concerns: Many products lack UVA protection: People buy high SPF sunscreens assuming they’ve purchased products that maximize sun protection. High SPF products do protect from sunburn but they do not necessarily block UVA radiation. UVA rays are the more deeply penetrating rays linked to skin aging, wrinkling, immune system suppression and skin cancer. Sunscreens break down in the sun: At lease 4 of the FDA-approved active ingredients in sunscreens break down significantly when exposed to sunlight. This means they lose their ability to absorb the sun’s harmful rays and stop working effectively in as little as 30 minutes.

Questionable product claims: The FDA has no enforceable standards for sunscreen ingredients, labeling or advertising. The existing guidelines are simply guidelines. They are not enforceable. So, companies are free to use marketing terms that are considered confusing and sell products that have misleading branding. One study analysis shows that 51% of sunscreens are labeled with terms that are unacceptable and misleading. Examples of these claims are: chemical-free; reflects; shields from; screens out sun’s rays; help prevent skin damage; sand-proof; provides all day protection; and mild as water. Without labeling restrictions, consumers have no way of knowing what is true and what is not and can be fooled into buying products that don’t do what they claim. Some sunscreens absorb into the blood and raise safety concerns: The EWG’s review of the technical literature shows that some sunscreen ingredients absorb into the blood, and some of these are linked to toxic effects. Some ingredients release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight, while others act like estrogen and could disrupt hormone systems. Several ingredients are strongly linked to allergic reactions, and others may build up in the body or the environment. Many sunscreens contain ingredients that raise potential concerns: Products vary widely in the inherent safety of the ingredients. The FDA has no mandatory standards for sunscreen ingredients. Manufacturers are free to make products containing ingredients that may not be safe when slathered on the skin. Each manufacturer decides on their own testing methods, marketing claims and the level of protection they provide consumers. Among the numerous ingredients in sunscreen products, most have not been tested for safety. Different ingredients, con-

centrations and mixtures of these are used. These factors also contribute to the safety and effectiveness of such products. Once again, it is up to you to check labels and make a decision as to which product will serve you best. A good rule of thumb to use in selecting sunscreen is: if the list of ingredients is very long and item names are impossible to pronounce, it’s probably not good for you. The FDA advises people to stay out of the sun from 10 am to 4 pm because those are the hours when the sun’s rays and UV radiation are the strongest. Taking this advice can be beneficial. Such precautions can help you have a more enjoyable experience this summer with less chance of future negative health consequences. Reference: 1. If you don’t have the luxury of much time, there are other ways to see this classic hike with any schedule: If you have only a weekend to get away, focus on one part of the trail. One choice could be the 31-mile route into the Ritter Range. Most of this small mountain range is located in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. You can begin your tour at Red’s Meadow, located near Mammoth Lakes, and head northbound to Shadow Lake. Leaving the John Muir Trail, you can walk west to Ediza Lake. Experienced hikers may then choose to head south to Cecile Lake until the Sierra High Route, which runs mostly parallel to the John Muir Trail. If you are a less experienced hiker, double back at Ediza Lake to rejoin the trail. You can then follow the trail southeast to Agnew Meadows, where a free shuttle will take you to your car. Many people choose to take the hike in sections. An option would be to hike a week at a time and complete the trail over a few summers. No matter what route you choose, the classic trail promises to more than fulfill your expectations.

CHEMISTRY

of Essentials Oils By Bill Nickerson

nearest jar of liquid, a jar of Lavender oil. To his surprise, the burnt hand healed much quicker than usual, with no scars. This attracted GattefossÊ’s attention and he began to study the properties of Lavender oil in more detail. The results of his research were published in his book, Aromatherapy, still in print.

A

romatherapy is the therapeutic use of natural essential oils, introduced into the body via respiratory tract, skin and/or mucosa. It is a wonderful, wise and completely scientific method of preventing and healing many ailments. Of course, aromatherapy cannot substitute for modern medicine and its numerous pharmaceutical compounds. However, there is a place for everything. Without rejecting modern medicine, we can speak of the advantages of a whole number of naturally pure essential oils in comparison with modern pharmaceutical products, which will prevent and heal a range of pathologies. For more than 6,000 years, mankind has been acquainted with the wonderful effects of natural essential oils, and their healing and purifying properties and unique fragrances. For centuries, essential oils have served as symbols of wealth and were highly valued as gifts. In Egypt, they were used to disinfect the air, provide skin care, and for aromatic baths. In India they believed that scents opened the soul and tuned the mind. Hippocrates recommended daily aromatic baths to his patients and essential oils for healing massage. It is said that he used aromatic fumigation to rid Athens of the plague.

Scents are an inseparable part of our lives; we have known fragrances since childhood. Everyone knows the aroma of garlic, tea with mint, grated lemon peel or fresh roses. But, once cut off, roses quickly wither, lemon peel dries out and it is impossible to find mint leaves under the snow. To overcome these limitations, people learned to collect scents of plants and conserve their magic properties by creating essential oils. Essential oils are scents that are concentrated into liquids. In this form, fragrances acquired high concentrations and ease of use. For a scientist, essential oils are composite organic compounds of terpenes, alcohols and aldehydes, ketones and other hydrocarbons contained in the essential oil of plants. The chemistry of essential oils is complicated; the number of organic and inorganic ingredients of essential oils varies between 120 and 500. It is impossible

to reproduce this chemistry artificially. Synthetic oils cannot have the healing properties of natural essential oils. Because of their high concentration, essential oils should be used with some care: Never apply undiluted oil directly to skin or mucous membranes. It should always be diluted with a carrier oil for topical application. Phototoxic reactions may occur with citrus peel oils such as lemon or orange. Always check first to see if you are allergic to an oil. Ingestion of essential oil can only be recommended after consulting a doctor and use during pregnancy or in case of epilepsy should only be carried out under professional medical guidance. In the case of heart disorders, bronchial asthma and asthmatic syndromes, consult your doctor before using essential oils. Essential oils must be kept tightly closed, in a dark place and out of the reach of children. References: 1.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aromatherapy 2.VIVASAN Product Reference

“Working” On Your Health

Body Sugaring as a Method of Hair Removal

hanges in the attitudes about work, and in the workplace itself, are exerting a massive influence on how we maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our expectations of the workplace have changed in recent years. Sterile, box-like working conditions are not consistent with today’s modern workplace. The new direction is toward a mixture of interesting, social and creative workspace designs. The lifestyle-conscious employer and employee want open and creative spaces, convenient health facilities and amenities, as well as a fun and playful community. Everyone knows the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle - you can live longer and live better. But can the same be said of a workplace? Does a better workplace make you a healthier person? Research shows that a better balance of work and lifestyle will make our daily lives more enjoyable, and part of that enjoyment is better health. According to evidence gathered by the National Quality Institute, healthier workplaces with a focus on sustainable wellbeing, a working lifestyle unique and flexible to the individual, will create an environment in which you will thrive and prosper. Organizations are starting to understand that employer practices that foster employee well-being must be built into the workplace culture. Offering employees flexible work scheduling, telecommuting and other healthy lifestyle options such as onsite health, stress-management, weight-loss and smoking-cessation programs can help employees optimize their physical and mental health. So with employee shortages looming, organizations that can recruit and retain the best people with a unique lifestyle-centered workplace will have the advantage. Individuals who care about their overall health and quality of life will be seeking this inside the workplace as well as out.

or centuries, we have searched for variety in hair removal; a modern spin on a system used since Ancient Egypt shows promise. Several benefits of using any variation of a sugar paste (i.e., sugar, lemon juice, honey, and some herbs) have been demonstrated when comparing it to the more common wax method. • Sugar paste consists of 100% natural ingredients – it is so natural you can eat it! • It can be applied at room temperature–your skin will never be burned, and this makes sugar paste safe for people with spider veins and varicose veins. • There is less tendency for hair to break using sugar, and less breakage means hair is less likely to grow back quickly. • No resins or chemicals are used or left behind on the skin when using sugar paste. Sugar is easily washed off with water – you will not feel sticky and clothes will not be ruined. • Using sugar can help control cross-contamination bacteria cannot breed or survive in sugar. • Hair is removed in the direction of is natural growth making the process less painful. • Sugar will remove hair and exfoliate dead skin cells; it will not adhere to live skin cells, thus making it safe for dry itch eczema and dry psoriasis. HEALTHY COOKING

Grilled Yucca Tortillas By Liz Penny

T

his is an outstanding recipe from a great vegan cookbook that I tested at home on my roommates. Easy, unusual, and unusually yummy, it was a great hit. Two weeks later I made it for lunch for 15 non-vegans at a professional Feldenkrais training in Berkeley, CA. I adapted it with a bit of dairy and the resulting golden, warm, garlicky tortillas were a smash hit. I was drafted as the visiting chef for the rest of our training session! [NOTE: You can find yucca root (aka manioc or cassava) in many specialty grocery stores and Asian or Latino markets. If you’ve never cooked with it, you’re in for a comforting and truly delicious treat!]

Filling 1 lb yucca, peeled & cut into 2” cubes 3 tablespoons olive oil 6 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1 small sweet potato or yam 1 small yellow onion, chopped 1 can rinsed and drained black beans 1 small yellow bell pepper, seeded and diced 2 teaspoons lime juice ½ teaspoon salt 4-6 flour tortillas

Lime Crema 1 cup plain yogurt ¼ cup olive oil 1/3 cup chopped cilantro ½ jalapeno pepper, seeded and diced 3 tablespoons lime juice 1 teaspoon sugar, or to taste

Make the lime crema: Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor, blend until creamy. Pour into a bowl and place in the refrigerator until tortillas are ready. Make the filling: Bake the sweet potato at 450 degrees for 45 minutes, or microwave it for 4-7 minutes, until soft. Break it open and scrape flesh into a small bowl. Set aside. Boil 3 quarts water in a large pot. Add yucca and cook for 20-25 minutes, until it is tender and flakes easily when pierced with a fork. Drain and cool. When the yucca is cool enough to touch, remove thick skin from the outside of the root, and/or fibrous core from the center. Gently mash with your fingers. Add sweet potato to it and set aside. Place oil and garlic in a cold castiron skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 2 mins, or until fragrant. Add onions and cook until just translucent. Add bell peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, 6-8 mins. Remove from heat, cool briefly, then pour over mashed yucca and yam. Stir in lime juice, salt, and white pepper, mashing the mixture until everything is combined (try using your hands!). Stir in the black beans.

To assemble: Heat a griddle or thick-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Brush a tortilla lightly with olive oil and spread with a generous 1/2 cup of filling, covering half the tortilla all the way to the edges. Fold in half, gently pressing the tortilla together, and brush each side with a little olive oil. Place in the heated skillet and grill, flipping once, pressing down on the tortilla with a spatula until the outsides are nicely toasted and filling is piping hot. Remove from heat, cut in half, and serve with salsa, guacamole, and lime crema. • Adapted by Liz Penny from the outstanding vegan cookbook, Veganomicon, by I. Moskowitz and T. Romero.
