For the past 6 years I have been in and out of hospitals for various surgeries and I was sick all the time! Galanthus nivalis: The Snowdrop. The delicate loveliness of this flower belies its strength in being among the first to announce that spring and warmth are on their way. The arrival of new life bursting into flesh, leaf and flower, feather and fur, will be welcome after this cold, long winter. What also comes to mind is the relentlessness of the natural cycles: the seasons; the biological imperative; the laws of nature. Pushing upward through rock or snow, taking nourishment, giving life, in a multitude of ways. These actions continue unabated, with or without our awareness, with or without our invitation, acceptance or understanding. Much is at work beneath the surface of things, preparing to burst out into the light, alive and full of energy – points of connection with our own lives. The early flower, the tender shoot, the new child; reminders of the persistence and miracles of life, the cycles of birth, death and renewal. Spring will soon be here and we smile as we think of it!

Dear Readers, Each month Healthy Beginnings Magazine addresses all sorts of physical, mental and emotional developments. In my letter this month I wanted to address the correlation between lack of preparation and stress. I think it is apropos that I am writing this letter in a labor birthing room. My daughter Ffjorren starting having contractions this afternoon around 2:00 PM, just as she was completing the billing process for the magazine. This would be an exciting time if her due date weren’t still one month away.

It is now 7:45 PM; she has been given three series of medications to stop the contractions, which slow down for a short time, then soon return.

Grandma Dawn thinks that this young man is ready to introduce himself to the world. My daughter, on the other hand, is concerned because she is not ready for him to come! His hospital bag is not packed, the twins’ bags are not packed for grandma’s house, and Ffjorren’s hospital bag is not packed. All the bag packing was to happen this week, Ffjorren thinking that one month in advance would surely be plenty of time.

Like her mother Ffjorren believes that preparation is key to alleviating stress in ones life. She grew up with affirmations like: “The future is purchased by the present,” “Plan your work and work your plan” and “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”

We never know when life will throw us a curve ball; yet I have found that the more one is prepared for the unexpected, the better equipped we are at handling whatever comes our way.

In my mind’s eye, one can never be too prepared; and being ahead of schedule leaves more room for play time!

Toddlers Get the Help They Need CARE Chest of Sierra Nevada has teamed up with Friends of Special Children to provide children in the Nevada Early Intervention Services program with free pediatric equipment. Kirk Sachtler DPT, CMPT, OCS, CSCS

By Sara Piccola The health and fitness classes will cover a wide variety of topics and are unique in their format. Classes will be shorter than an average fitness class and will include extensive education. Kirk’s objective is for his students to gain the ability to continue their exercises and treatments without an instructor. To do this, every patient needs to be highly knowledgeable about their specific situation and the process required for recovery.

As physical therapy has evolved over the years, the education process has become more and more rigorous. The internet has had a profound and beneficial impact on this educational process. Kirk notes that many of his clients now come in to his office with very good information about their conditions because of the extensive information available on the Internet.

As a result, Kirk has evolved as a practitioner as well. He has been a physical therapist for 20 years and still learns something new with every patient. Although injuries repeat themselves, the human body is always much more complicated. Kirk evaluates every patient individually with the intention that each patient will leave his care more knowledgeable than when they came in, whether the problem was resolved or not. The fact that Kirk can focus on the individual allows him to build relationships with his clients, something he truly enjoys about his career.

He first became interested in physical therapy while studying engineering and working part time in a physical rehabilitation hospital. Although Kirk was on a different path, he was immediately enticed by the personal interaction between the physical therapists and their patients, something he knew he would not experience in the engineering profession.

In addition to his passion for physical therapy, Kirk has been a volunteer ski patrol member for the last 20 years at Alpine Meadows Resort. He moved west specifically to come to the Lake Tahoe area and continues to enjoy everything the Tahoe region has to offer.

Through his personal experiences and his love for his job, Kirk improves the lives of his patients on a daily basis. He takes the issue of health very seriously; he believes in nutrition above all things, and has himself evolved alongside the alternative health industry. It is in this arena that he has chosen to focus and expand his knowledge and services, and to build his practice.

here are two clearly defining qualities about Kirk Sachtler, PT, MS, DPT, OCS, CMPT, CSCS. The first is his extensive education – consisting of a masters and doctorate in physical therapy alongside board certifications in manual physical therapy and strength and conditioning specialties. Kirk himself is the quintessential competitive athlete. He’s been a semi-pro tennis player, he is an avid skier, a cyclist, a sailor, and recently has discovered the rush of sailplanes. As a result, Kirk knows first hand the pain and disability that physical therapy patients experience. He is also a certified orthopedic specialist.

Therapeutically, Kirk’s advanced methods combine manual applications with exercise systems and the use of unique healing modalities. One of Kirk’s specialties is microcurrent and cold laser therapy. A microcurrent is an electric stimulation below the level of sensation, which helps the body heal on a cellular level. This procedure is a tissue healing technique, not pain relief. However, pain relief can occur as a result. Microcurrent therapy can be used in treating cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. And instead of masking pain, it helps to heal the injury at the level of damage.

For example, people often seek acupuncture to relieve pain. Back pain, neck pain, joint pain, general aches and pains, headaches, menstrual pains, etc. all respond well to acupuncture. By using acupuncture to supplement weak Qi or release stagnant Qi, the pain subsides.

Similarly, non-pain symptoms such as poor digestion, allergies, breathing problems, stress and fatigue also respond well. Just like pain, the effectiveness of acupuncture in these cases comes from either supporting weak Qi or unblocking stuck Qi as indicated by the individual situation.

How Does It Work?

One of the questions I’m most commonly asked is, “How does acupuncture work?”

Because it is such an ancient discipline, nobody truly knows its exact physical mechanism. Even with modern diagnostic techniques such as MRIs and lab work, we are only able to see the effects of acupuncture, not the exact mechanism creating them. Ultimately we know it is working because a person’s symptoms and quality of life improve.

cupuncture is the ancient healing art of stimulating specific areas on the body to promote healing, relieve pain and rebalance energy. Opinions vary about its origins, but historians estimate it began between 3,000 and 5,000 years ago.

The specific body areas stimulated are called “acupuncture points.” There are 365 original points that are traditionally used, plus around 700 additional points that have been discovered over time.

The principal concept of acupuncture is that all disease results from basic energy imbalances within the body. The traditional explanation for these imbalances is that Qi (pronounced “Chee”) is either weak or stagnant. Qi, commonly translated as “energy,” is the vitality that supports our ability to move, breath, think, etc.

For example, when someone has fatigue, poor digestion and gets frequent colds, weak Qi could be to blame. By contrast, feeling tense, frustrated and reactive due to stress are usually symptoms of blocked or stagnant Qi. For those of us in the West who are used to thinking in mechanical, biochemical and structural terms, the concept of Qi sounds odd at first. However, it’s a very sophisticated system for describing functional states of health. This way of perceiving health and imbalance gives practitioners a unique way to help return the body to a healthier state. And because of the knowledge gained from literally millions of treatments over thousands of years, the ability to rebalance the weak or blocked vital energy using acupuncture points can be very powerful.

An example of seeing acupuncture’s effects with modern measurement happened to one of my patients. She came in to relieve pain caused by a bone spur on her heel. Her podiatrist had taken x-rays showing the spur. After a month of acupuncture treatment, the pain was gone. She was happy, but curious about the status of the bone spurs. The next x-ray showed no bone spurs.

Some argue that acupuncture only works because a person believes it will.

When I hear this I am always reminded that animals respond very well to acupuncture without any need to “believe.”

means “needle and moxa therapy.” Moxa is an herb that is used to warm the points.

In addition to needles and heat, point stimulation by pressure (acupressure), magnets and mild electrical current can be effective. Although each way of stimulating points has a slightly different effect, all can create improvements. The first thing I tell people who ask this is that acupuncture needles are very different from a hypodermic needle. For one thing, they are very small, just about the diameter of a hair. It takes skill and practice to insert such fine needles painlessly through the skin. Depending on the gauge of the needles, you could probably place 8 or 10 acupuncture needles inside of a hypodermic needle. In addition, unlike hollow hypodermic needles, the acupuncture needles are solid.

The other factor that can affect how someone experiences acupuncture is that each person has different levels of sensitivity and anticipation about treatments. This means that everyone experiences acupuncture somewhat differently. On one extreme there are people who respond very well to very light stimulus on the points. On the other extreme there are people who require a much stronger stimulus to feel better. I always prefer to start very light when first working with a new patient until we can tell how best they respond.

What’s On The Label & What’s Not

Potassium Sorbate You can find this mild preservative in many products such as food, wine and even herbal supplements. Its main purpose is to inhibit the presence of mold, yeast, and microbes, thus giving products a longer shelf life.

Potassium Sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid, a natural organic compound isolated from the oil of the unripened rowan berry (sorbapple or mountain ash berry). The chemical structure of sorbic acid was determined in the late 19th century and chemically synthesized in 1900. Sorbic acid and its salts were not used commercially until the 1940’s when their ability to interfere with ATP metabolism in microbes, while posing no health risk when eaten by mammals, was discovered. Since the 1950’s, sorbic acid has been repeatedly tested for safety and efficacy, and today is one of the most thoroughly tested food additives in US history. Few substances have had such extensive, rigorous, and long-term testing. It is non-toxic even when taken in large quantities, and breaks down in the body into water and carbon dioxide in the Krebs Cycle. It is metabolized just like any other polyunsaturated fat.

Generally used in very small amounts, it is safe, non-toxic and non-sensitizing.

Diacetyl Are you a fan of buttered popcorn?

Well workers in popcorn plants most likely are not. As recently as 1992, a rare disease called bronchiolitis obliterans, also known as “popcorn lung”, is being seen in many employees of popcorn plants. Bronchiolitis obliterans is a destruction of the lung’s airways. It does not respond to normal asthma medications and many of these workers are ending up on a lung transplant waiting list.

Although it has not been exactly determined what in the flavoring is causing harm, diacetyl is a chemical commonly used in the production of buttered popcorn. It has been linked to respiratory problems and lung diseases. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), “A cause-effect relationship between diacetyl and bronchiolitis obliterans has not been established, as food-processing workers with this lung disease were also exposed to other volatile food-flavoring agents.”

However, they have listed the following potential symptoms of exposure to the chemical as: • Eye, mucous membrane, respiratory system, and skin irritation • Persistent cough • Phlegm production • Wheezing • Dyspnea (shortness of breath) • Unusual fatigue • Episodes of mild fever or generalized aches • Severe skin rashes As of September 4, 2007, the Flavor and Extract Manufacturers have recommended a reduction in the use of diacetyl and a few major popcorn companies are beginning to turn to an alternative ingredient. ConAgra (Orville Redenbacher and Act II popcorn), the Weaver Popcorn company (TrailsEnd popcorn), General Mills Inc. (Pop-Secret) and the American Pop March 2008

Corn Co. (Jolly Time popcorn) are responding to this recommendation. The food companies have not pinpointed exactly when the new popcorn will be available at all stores because the timetable depends on how much popcorn a store sells and how much of the product stores keep in their own warehouses. In addition to this recommendation, Assemblywoman Sally Lieber has introduced a bill to ban the use of diacetyl by 2010.

Popcorn is not the only product that contains diacetyl. It can be found in butter, margarine, beer, and wine. However, health problems have only been seen in workers of popcorn plants. The Washington, D.C.-based Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association has said consumers shouldn’t worry about eating microwave popcorn as long as they follow directions, which typically include a warning to open bags of popcorn away from the face. As of this printing, there has only been one reported case of “popcorn lung” from a consumer who ate multiple bags of popcorn every day for years.

itamins and minerals are as essential to life as water, and are required for good health! This information, of course, is not new or unknown. What may not be known, however, are all the ways in which your body can receive minerals. Good food and supplements are the obvious ways of getting minerals, but have you ever thought of mineral baths as a way to do this? Understanding the benefits of

GINSENG

or more than two thousand years, the roots of the ginseng plant have been valued in Chinese medicine. The two most commonly used species are Panax ginseng (also called American, Asian, Korean or Chinese ginseng), and Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus). Both are harvested from the wild and from cultivated plantations. Panax ginseng however, is not the same as Siberian ginseng. In Russia, Siberian ginseng was promoted as a cheaper alternative to Panax ginseng and was believed to have identical benefits. However, Siberian ginseng does not contain ginsenosides, the widely studied active ingredient present in Panax ginseng, but contains eleutherosides.

All ginsengs are considered to be adaptogenic, which means they strengthen the body and stabilize adverse conditions, helping the body to return to normal after prolonged stress. Therefore, ginsengs are considered to be valuable supports for those recovering from illness or surgery, especially the elderly.

There have been positive reports of using ginseng to treat cancer, heart disease, respiratory problems and fatigue, as well as to boost energy and mental performance and to improve quality of life. Laboratory studies in animals have reported that ginseng is effective in boosting the immune system, as an antioxidant to protect against heart attacks and for protection against kidney damage caused by methamphetamine use.

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) Siberian Ginseng (eleuthero) has been used in China for over 2,000 years as a tonic to invigorate your “vital” energy source, normalize body functions, restore vigor, improve health, promote good appetite, and help to assure a long life. Generally, it serves as a preventive medicine and general tonic.

It is commonly called eleuthero, and was previously marketed in the United States as Siberian Ginseng as it has similar herbal properties to those of Panax ginseng. However, it belongs to a different genus, and it is currently illegal in the United States to market eleuthero as Siberian Ginseng since “ginseng” only refers to the Panax species.

Eleuthero is highly valued as an adaptogen. It is also used as a stimulant. Russians prescribe it for patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy due to its anti-radiation effect.

described Siberian Ginseng as an “adaptogen” that normalizes body functions, no matter what the condition or disease.

Since the early 1950s, studies have shown that eleuthero extract increases mental alertness, work output, and the quality of work under stressful conditions and in athletic performance.

In addition, it strongly stimulates the immune system. Siberian Ginseng has been shown to enhance mental acuity and physical endurance without the letdown that comes with caffeinated products.

Modern studies conducted by Russian scientists show that eleuthero relieves stress, lowers the toxicity of some common drugs that tend to produce side effects in humans, increases mental alertness, improves resistance to colds and mild infections, and may be beneficial in cases where a person is continuously in contact with environmental stresses.

Research has shown that eleuthero improves the use of oxygen by the exercising muscle. This means that a person is able to maintain aerobic exercise longer and recover from workouts much quicker.

Eleuthero has traditionally been used as an immune-enhancing agent. It is also employed as an anti-inflammatory, in cardiovascular disease, to restore concentration, memory, and cognition, and as a remedy for stress, depression, fatigue, or complete nervous breakdown. www.HBMag.com

Panax ginseng has been used as a support against almost every possible ailment from anxiety to cancer. The main active ingredients of Panax ginseng are the more than 25 “ginsenosides”. ince the dawn of humanity, people have eaten meat for food and it has consistently remained a primary source of protein. In recent years, we have witnessed a monumental shift from diets primarily rooted in meat-eating habits to those of vegetarian and vegan. Health rhetoric, news, and medical reports continually advocate the superiority of vegetarian and vegan diets to those containing meat. But are the answers really that black and white?

Trying to decipher where the real truth lies can be a challenge.

Research shows that strict vegetarian and vegan diets can be considered unhealthy in many aspects, especially when careful attention is not paid to obtaining proper amounts of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals on a daily basis. This statement does not in any way advocate diets

lacking in a sufficient supply of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole sprouted grains -- it means merely that diets including healthy meats in moderation are probably going to offer the greatest nutritional support to most people.

Because all people differ slightly in various biological aspects and needs, select care should be taken in tailoring your diet to your body’s specific needs.

The Metabolic Typing Diet is a great book which illustrates not a “fad diet”, but more of an observatory guide and how to decide which foods are best for your own needs by applying the right kinds of food in the proper amount.

So, the problem with meat is not that all meat is unhealthy. The problem is how the majority of meat is being produced, and the amounts of meat that are demanded by the public, and therefore March 2008

consumed. Many factors in the raising of meat have changed since the dawn of time. The reality of conditions in factory farms (those which produce meat in the most horrific conditions available) should be a resounding wake-up call.

The amount of waste, disease, abuse of animals, damage to our health and the environment created by the presence of factory farms alone should be enough to make the majority of citizens stand up and cause a revolt.

Because the culture of our society is so tied to consuming, changing opinions and habits is not an easy thing to do. But momentum has already begun. Look around in local communities in newspapers, bookstores, health food stores, and online. You’ll be astonished to learn that you can find groups of people in advocacy of cleaning up current farming practices and making changes in many different places.

It’s not too difficult to find documentation detailing the damage to our planet from the existence of commercial or factory farms. As affluence has grown in communities, so does the demand for more and more products - including meat. To produce this horribly mutated food product, we have destroyed millions of acres of rain-forests and other valuable lands, increased the growth of soy, corn, and grain in order to have enough feed for animals, increased our consumption of oil to transport both the feed for animals and meat, contributed to the world’s greenhouse gas issue in a significant way, caused the development of super-bacteria and other drug resistant strains of illness due to filthy conditions in facilities that administer continued doses of antibiotics and other medications.

The issue of what is being fed to farm animals is of critical importance. Cattle are not designed to consume grains, soy, and corn. These animals are meant to eat grass – and this is far too often the exception than the rule. When cattle eat grass, the meat is lower in fat and therefore, also lower in calories. Meat from grass-fed animals also contains the correct amounts of Omega 3 essential fatty acids. These important fats keep the cardiovascular system functioning properly.

Studies also show that “eggs from pastured hens can contain as much as 10 times more Omega 3s” than birds raised in a feed barn. American diets are saturated with too many Omega 6s and Omega 9s, causing the delicate balance in the body to become upset. This disturbance in the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids can also contribute to cancer.

Improve Your Skin’s Appearance with the Regular Use of a

Far Infrared Sauna

mproving your skin’s appearance can be counted as one of the many health benefits associated with the regular use of a far infrared (FIR) sauna. Healthy skin is essential to overall health. This is because the skin is the largest eliminatory organ of the body. The skin is sometimes referred to as the “third kidney.” The deep sweating that is produced during a FIR sauna session brings deeply imbedded impurities and dead skin cells to the surface of the skin which make the skin immaculately clean and radiant. Your face will glow after a FIR sauna session from the increased circulation that comes from using a sauna. Many people find that their skin tone and elasticity can improve and skin problems such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can benefit greatly from the use of a FIR sauna.

Even keloid scars can be softened and become less visible. In addition, many women have noticed that cellulite is reduced when they regularly use a FIR sauna.

So why is sweating through the use of a FIR sauna so much more beneficial for the skin than normal sweating such as through exercise or taking a hot bath? The answer lies in the nature of the sweat produced by a FIR sauna. Dr. Yamazaki compares humans to bio-accumulators, and as such, they store numerous toxins in the body. Toxins disrupt the body’s natural healing processes. Some of these toxins are trapped in the skin and the fatty tissue just below the skin’s surface, causing acne and other skin problems. Sweating from using a FIR sauna removes these toxins from the skin. This not only makes the skin healthier but also makes the entire body healthier from the reduction in toxins. The healthier you are the healthier your skin will appear.

Your skin will feel wonderfully soft and clean after a sauna session. This is possible even though no water is used in a FIR sauna because the skin will be moisturized from within. It is important to drink plenty of water during and after your sauna session. A healthy, well balanced diet is also important so the body will have the correct balance of minerals and oils to keep the skin soft and moist naturally in conjunction with sauna therapy. The body’s natural oils are drawn from inside the body to the surface of the skin. Dead skin is exfoliated away. Even those with dry skin can benefit from the use of a FIR sauna.

“Props” Make It Possible

A

common misconception is that you have to be flexible to begin a yoga practice; the truth however, is that flexibility is a result, not a prerequisite – a very important distinction. You also gain strength, balance and coordination from the physical poses, and improved circulation and stress relief from the breathing exercises. Yoga really is for people of all ages, sizes and physical conditions.

A classic pose is seated, legs straight out in front, bending forward from the hips (Figure 1). This pose, with the addition of a folded blanket and a strap is easily accessible to the beginning student (Figure 2).

Many beginners benefit from the use of props. Props help with proper alignment, and provide support to the muscles, minimizing strain. A strap, a folded blanket, a block or a chair can allow a new student to do the poses safely and correctly right from the start. Here are some examples of the use of props in forward bends.

• The strap is looped around the feet with the ends held in each hand, providing the same tension as holding the feet directly.

If there are special low back concerns, a safe approach to the forward bend is lying on the back, either on the floor or on a bed, and stretch one leg at a time (Figure 3).

• Start by lying on the back, both knees bent and soles of feet on the floor.

• Bring the right knee toward the chest and put the strap around the arch of the foot, ends of the strap in each hand.

• Straighten the right leg, and draw it closer while exhaling. Release gently on the inhale and repeat with the breath.

After gentle stretching, release and repeat on the other side.

If getting up from the floor presents problems, use a block or a chair, and do the pose standing (Figures 4 and 5).

• Stand in front of the prop and bend forward from the hips on the exhale.

5 stretch on the exhalation. After gentle stretching, bend the knees and inhale to move up to standing, lifting with the legs, not the back.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) & what are Can medicine or other treatments relieve IBS the symptoms? symptoms?

IBS is a common intestinal disorder – oftentimes called colitis, or spastic colon/bowel. However, these terms are not accurate. IBS is characterized by a great deal of abdominal pain, cramps, gas and bloating, painful constipation and/or diarrhea. The effects of IBS can be anywhere from mildly annoying to disabling.

Unfortunately, there exists no standard way of treating IBS, either medically or using alternative therapies. Your doctor may prescribe fiber supplements or laxatives, depending on whether you suffer from constipation. Some doctors prescribe antispasmodic drugs and antidepressant drugs for patients who are depressed.

What causes IBS?

If you turn to herbs and botanicals, look for a company that sells a number of different products, has been in business for years and staffs or consults with herbalists and doctors of naturopathic medicine. Or consult with one yourself.

It is not known exactly what causes this disease, though the most likely causes appear to be diet and stress. The colon muscle of someone afflicted with IBS begins to spasm after only mild stimulation as the colon is more sensitive and reactive than it would be in someone who did not suffer from IBS. Certain medicines and foods sometimes trigger spasms. Spasms can delay the passage of stool and this, in turn leads to constipation. It is also believed that stress can sometimes worsen IBS symptoms, along with chocolate, milk products, alcohol and caffeine.

How do diet & stress effect IBS? Most people report that their symptoms occur following a meal or whenever they are under stress. It is known that fat (animal or vegetable) is a strong stimulus of colonic contractions after eating and someone suffering from IBS may experience symptoms due to the sensitivity of the colon muscle. Therefore, for many people suffering from IBS, it is vitally important that they follow a healthy diet. In addition, it is recommended they keep a journal noting the foods that cause distress and discuss theses findings with their doctor. If, for instance, dairy foods appear to cause symptoms, then another source of calcium would be needed if these foods are eliminated. In addition to fat, consuming large meals can sometimes cause cramping and diarrhea. Symptoms may be eased by eating smaller meals that are low in fat and high in carbohydrates such as rice, wholegrain breads and cereals, fruits and vegetables.

How does colon hydrotherapy help with IBS symptoms?

Many people suffering from the effects of IBS experience noticeable relief from their symptoms through colon hydrotherapy. Following the advice from the best-seller, “Natural Cures,” some felt like a new person within a relatively short time. They also reported their headache, bloating, depression and fatigue were gone.

Cleansing the colon, along with a good probiotic, will help sooth irritation of the bowel and can assist you in the detoxification process.

Dietary fiber is thought to lessen the symptoms of IBS. Good sources would include whole grain breads and cereals, beans, fruits and vegetables. However, it is recommended that you check with your health care practitioner before using a fiber supplement as high intake of fiber can cause bloating.

Oftentimes, these symptoms disappear as your body adjusts to the diet.

Good hydration, exercise, meditation and a careful diet are also important for managing your stress levels and improving your mental and spiritual states.

recently had the pleasure to share lunch with Dawn Gowery (the publisher of this magazine) and enjoy her gracious and supportive spirit. One of the things we spoke about was a course called Awakening Joy that she had seen mentioned in Oprah Magazine. It didn’t take much prodding to get me to enroll as I’m a huge fan of happiness and joy and our world needs it more than ever.

We must contain a buoyant vigor for happiness to offset the constricting and challenged times we live in.

As we awaken to all that is good in ourselves and in others around us, we are reminded of how much we love life and care about this planet.

Cultivating our goodness, aliveness and joy not only feels good, it also helps us express our love more and awaken it in others. The rippling effect of our own practice becomes our gift to everyone we meet.

A ‘Jawbreaking’ Experience

Tightness, lack of muscle tone, and ‘too much flexibility or instability’ are key contributors to dysfunction. The muscles of the head and neck as well as the muscles in the chest, shoulders, and back can contribute to imbalances that can cause TMD. In addition, almost every individual with TMD is a ‘shallow-breather’ and does not perform enough diaphragmatic breathing during the course of a day.

elltale signs of possible Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction (TMD) include: radiating facial, jaw, ear, or neck pain; jaw muscle stiffness; limited jaw movement or locking upon opening or closing; painful jaw clicking, grating, or popping; and headaches which often time occur after eating chewy-type foods. Interestingly enough, headaches are one of the most common reasons people seek care and can account for one-third of the outpatient visits at a neurologist’s office. One cause of headache is from clenching or grinding the teeth due to stress or jaw muscle tension.

What is the incidence of TMD? According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, nearly 10 million Americans are affected by TMD with women much more likely to be affected than men; ratios from 3:1 to 9. And, about half the population report at least one telltale sign at one time or another. If signs and symptoms are ignored, the problem can become serious.

Answers: 1. A: seven Plastics fall into seven general categories, which are divided by the type of resin contained in the plastic. The resin type is identified by a number (from one to seven) inside a triangle of arrows on the bottom of the product.

• Plastics with a #1 indicate the presence of polyethylene terephthalate (PET, or PETE) – often found in plastic water bottles, food containers, polyester fabrics and carpet.

• #2 high density polyethylene (HDPE) is found in plastic water bottles, grocery bags and bottles that contain cleaners.

The Earth Policy Institute estimates that buried plastic bottles can take up to 1,000 years to break down, and therefore will continue to hog much-needed space in landfills. In contrast, a banana peel and many other types of organic waste take only a few weeks.

Plastic is derived from crude oil â&#x20AC;&#x201C; according to the Earth Policy Institute, it takes approximately 17 million barrels of oil just to make the amount of bottles used by Americans annually for bottled water, which is enough to fuel 1,000,000 U.S. cars for a year. Conversely, each ton of plastic bottles recycled saves about 3.8 barrels of oil, according to the American Chemistry Council.

Last November, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) proposed the Bottle Recycling Climate Protection Act. The bill was designed to encourage nationwide plastic recycling by establishing a 5 cent deposit on plastic beverage containers. While 11 states already have similar systems in place, Markey recognized the need to increase the effort. The bill is currently awaiting action by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

our cat brings joy as she curls up on your lap and purrs herself to sleep. She provides you with endless entertainment while chasing a feather wand, ball or other soft toy.

However, without training she may also drive you crazy when she scratches your favorite piece of furniture, leaps at your ankles or stops using her litter-box.

Whatever issues you or your cat may have, training her can help solve problems that could threaten your relationship with your cat. Consider this - we as humans enjoy praise and try to avoid punishments.

Your cat is the same. If you give positive reinforcement to her for something you want her to do by giving her something pleasant or rewarding she’ll more likely repeat that “rewarded behavior.” It is far more effective to teach her what she should do rather than try to teach her what she shouldn’t.

Unfortunately, there’s a disservice to owners when it comes to cat behavior with outdated or inaccurate information – just search the internet. Simply, physical punishments don’t work. Cats have a somewhat limited concept of punishment.

Please, don’t assume your cat “knows when they are bad.” There are ways to

Timing is essential when using positive reinforcement or punishments and must occur immediately, or your cat may not associate it with the proper action. Try putting pieces of dry cat food in your pocket and when your cat uses her scratching post, you can throw a piece for her to chase as a reward. Often, cats enjoy chasing their food. A bonus for the cat is it is good exercise. However, if you throw the food when she has stopped scratching the post and she walks toward you, she will think she’s being rewarded for coming to you. Consistency is the key to training a cat.

Using Positive Reinforcement Positive reinforcement can include food treats, praise, petting, or a favorite toy or game. When your cat is first learning a new behavior, she should be rewarded every time you catch her doing the desired behavior. If it is teaching her to scratch the post, you’ll reward her each time she shows interest in the post. On the other hand, avoid taking her over to the scratching post, positioning her paws on the post, and raking them along the post to show your cat what she’s supposed to do. This will likely have the opposite effect and make her less likely to use the post.

Once your cat reliably offers you desired behaviors, you may reward her with treats intermittently—for example, three out of every four times she does the behavior. Then, over time, reward her about half the time, then about a third of the time, and so on, until you’re only rewarding her occasionally with a treat.

Continue to praise her every time. Your cat will learn that if she keeps offering desired behaviors, eventually she’ll get what she wants—your praise and an occasional treat. You won’t be forever bound to carry a pocketful of goodies.

Remember, cats do not act out of spite or revenge. Physical punishment that involves discomfort or pain should never be used. In addition to it being inhumane, it could cause your cat to bite or resort to other undesirable behaviors. For example, holding your cat’s neck skin and shaking her may result in a frightened cat that then scratches or bites to defend herself. In addition, your cat could associate the punishment with other stimuli, including people, who are present at the time the punishment occurs.

For example, a cat punished for coming too close to a new baby may become fearful of, or aggressive to, the baby, or to other babies.

Remote Punishment Punishment is most effective when it does not come directly from you. For example, if your cat enjoys scratching the couch, you may apply special double-sided tape to those surfaces. Cats rarely like sticky paws.

Thus your cat perceives the couch, and not you, to be delivering the punishment. In this way, too, your cat is more likely to avoid the undesirable behavior even when you’re not around. However, it is critical that while discouraging undesirable behaviors, you help your cat understand what you want her to do and provide appropriate outlets for her normal cat behaviors, such as an appropriate place to scratch.

One of the reasons cats are such fun is when they are not sleeping, many of them enjoy playing. Play with your cat. It will help her physical and behavioral development and as a bonus teach her desirable behaviors while reducing undesirable behaviors.

Be sure your cat has safe toys to play with by herself, and don’t underestimate the power of play. Play can strengthen the bond between you and her while enhancing the quality of life for both.

The Healthy Adventurer Biking across Australia South to North Part 8 – Last leg This Monday being a holiday, all bike shops were closed. It was still early. So I spent the day with laundry, at the pool, shopping, sightseeing and writing. I enjoyed the international atmosphere. Though I heard several languages spoken, there was no linguistic difference when it came to snoring at bedtime. To me this was amusing. In “my” room we were eight men of which I was the obvious “granddaddy”. The snoring was terrific. One fellow could not take it anymore and in the middle of night started yelling: “Shut up!”

Shortly after that, the snoring continued just the same.

How wonderfully quiet and peaceful were the nights in the desert.

The Youth Hostel was fully booked, yet I was the only cyclist or “push biker” as we are called in Australia. The repair of my bike the next morning was prompt though a little pricey. Next to the Youth Hostel was a health food store. I stopped for a chat, surprised to see they carried my favorite brand, Natures Sunshine Products. I thought I had heard before that Codex Alimentarius had successfully outlawed natural supplements. More than half of the country’s health food stores were forced out of business. The rest of them, like this one, struggled to survive.

The people did not find this acceptable. Robbed of their freedom to make choices, eighty percent of Australians raised their voices in protest against this invasive legislation. The authorities were so surprised, and hopefully ashamed, that they immediately reversed the decision. Health food stores started to make a comeback. A triumphant victory for health and health freedom! I hope we in the US pay attention and stay alert to similar legislation and prevent any foothold of the “Codex”.

So what is the Codex Alimentarius that just completed its 30th convention in Rome, Italy? In my personal assessment it is a sort of an international FDA that, representing the interests of Big Pharma and the medical establishment, has set out to have natural remedies banned in all countries around the world.

What an abomination!

With a newly restored bike and fresh food supply, I left Alice Springs in the early afternoon. When I stopped that evening at one of those “lonely” roadhouses, I was actually not so lonely. A party was in full swing and I was promptly invited to attend. Folks staying at the caravan park and staff members had gathered around a campfire. Plenty of wine and beer was flowing, and there was a kakadu (more commonly known as a cockatoo) in a cage where a lady stuck her finger into it and was promptly bitten to the extent of drawing blood. “It was my fault,” she mumbled. The owner of the establishment had put up a powerful sound system. He had a guitar and played and sang Australian and American folksongs. He had a great voice, at one point he imitated Johnny Cash quite effectively.

Your Body is Your Temple

hen was the last time you took a step back from being fully engaged in your life?

Unless you have a meditation or awareness practice it was probably when you were in poor health from either being sick or injured. The greatest realization that can come from health challenges is that we realize just how much we do on a daily basis and how much of it actually brings us happiness. We are so incredibly progress-oriented it’s as if busyness was next to godliness. Are the activities you’re involved with worth your while? Collectively our culture is complaining about being so busy. It’s amazing that there isn’t more quality control around the things that we give our time away to.

We live in uncertain times and it’s easy to acquiesce to the dominant cultural voice of fear, unpredictability, and struggle. We go through periods of contraction and expansion that often times parallels our circumstances. When times get tough or when we don’t have enough time it’s tempting to begin to cut out the very things that make our lives feel worthwhile. Our mind makes distinctions between luxuries and staples and can be rather ruthless in this pursuit. A pared down life works for the short term but not for the long walk that is our lives. Living without may make your bottom line a little beefier and your overhead a little lower but it can also cramp your style in a big way. Take a larger perspective on the definition of your life and commit to the discovery of enduring happiness, at all costs. The trivialities and obstacles become pebbles in the road of your life and the wake is a splendid cascade of ripples that encourage your forward progression. Anything else is a benign form of complacent compromise.

What are your body and the health, that it expresses worth to you? How do you

care for it in times of sickness or times of health? You’d never put duct tape on the check engine light in your car, yet people will quickly do that with their own bodies to medicate symptoms. Many people take better care of their cars than they do their bodies. It’s a sad fact and in tough times this is especially true. A pill that takes no time to take and costs a quarter is a very attractive stopgap measure to discomfort.

Don’t wait for a diagnosis before you begin to live fully.

When we bargain shop for our health we often times get what we pay for. At our core we want the best and then fall prey to the way of being in the world that commodity shops base on price and convenience. I’ve told my patients on many an occasion to refrain from buying their supplements from Wal-Mart or Costco.

are absorbed into your body as they pass through unassimilated and are released into the septic system. In wealth, it’s not what you make; it’s what you keep. In nutrition, it’s not what you take; it’s what you absorb. The other temptation is to bargain shop for services provided by the milieu of local natural healing practitioners. Here again, you often times get what you pay for. If the practitioner doesn’t value their services this should be a sign that you may not derive value from it either. Are you worth the best that you are aware of or some discounted and diluted version of the real thing?

The truth is that you are an installation art piece from the divine creator, a sacred and vital work of art. A sentient nerve ending of God. Pick your definition, but regard it as holy. To see yourself as anything else is small-minded. It’s your birthright to experience your body, health, and spirit as a pleasurable and resilient addition to your life rather than a fragmented puzzle awaiting some form of closure before it can continue to live well. Invest in your health and your life. Cut out the meaningless. We afford and do what we value in life. There’s no two ways about it. People can afford the tattoo that they’ve wanted but neglect caring for their teeth, or perhaps worse, their spine.

It’s not until our lives are inconvenienced by pain that we begin to prioritize our health. Let wisdom tell you what old age can be like or better yet, observe the differences between a healthy elder and one beseiged by disease and stress. Make your decisions from this place. So enjoy yourself on this planet, while supplies last, as you are here for a limited time. After all, you are worth it. You can create a healthy, active and positively fulfilled life.

ed raspberry leaf has been traditionally used as a remedy for centuries (some sources estimate 10,000 years) and legend has it that the plant’s Latin name, Rubus idaeus, comes from Mt. Ida in Turkey, where Greek Gods supposedly discovered the plant. Legend aside, there is evidence as far back as the 2nd century that records Roman medicinal use of the red raspberry leaf, in addition to the fruit, which was also used medicinally. Historically, Linnaeus was responsible for the plant’s name. Early Roman usage of the red raspberry leaf included relief of uterine contractions during childbirth, as a remedy for stomach and throat ailments, and as a poultice for wounds and sores.

Various American Indian tribes were also aware of the leaves’ astringent properties, and used raspberry leaf tea as an eyewash, to cleanse wounds, and to relieve diarrhea, dysentery, uterine hemorrhage, menstrual cramps, and runny noses.

Today, red raspberry leaves are most commonly used during pregnancy and birth, however the list of its other medicinal uses is fairly extensive. Red raspberry leaves contain vitamins C, E, A, and some B complex, as well as essential minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, iron, zinc, and an easily absorbable form of calcium, making it a wonderfully nutritive plant. The astringent and antiseptic nature of the leaves helps to reduce inflammation, thereby making it a wonderful gargle for sore throats and poultice for wounds and burns.

The astringency of wet rasberry leaves applied directly to a wound reduces inflammation and tightens the mucous membranes, which helps to restore the skin’s firmness and reduce secretions. Red raspberry leaf tea also relieves menstrual cramps, stomach aches, diarrhea, and leg cramps, and is often prescribed to boost the immune system during flu season. It is also used to balance irregular menstrual cycle, and to enhance fertility, in both men and women.

For pregnant women, red raspberry tea is often prescribed to alleviate morning sickness and to counter anemia during pregnancy. The vitamins present in raspberry leaves not only boost a pregnant woman’s immune system, but also facilitate healthy bone and skin development for the baby. The abundance of calcium in the leaves contributes to the baby’s bone development, and works to control nerve response to pain during childbirth.

Red raspberry leaves also play an important role in childbirth, as they contain an essential alkaloid called fragrine that helps to tone uterine muscles. This alkaloid helps the uterus to contract more effectively during labor, and aids in the expulsion of retained placentas. The vitamins and minerals in the leaves also help to reduce blood loss after birth, and the high levels of minerals often help breast milk to come in, although in some women the leaves’ astringent properties might actually hinder this process. And while some sources suggest that red raspberry leaf tea should not be taken until the third trimester of pregnancy due to the possibility of miscarriage, studies have shown that there is no proven link connecting the tea with miscarriage as fragrine does not cause contractions or make them stronger, but merely helps to enhance their effectiveness. A poultice of wet raspberry leaves can also be used as a cure for mastitis in breastfeeding women.

While there are many factors that contribute to a healthy and straightforward pregnancy and birth, many women claim that red raspberry leaf helped them, above all, to birth easily and quickly.

Scientific studies have also shown higher incidents of uncomplicated births in women who have taken red raspberry leaf consistently, though there is no consensus that the leaf is responsible for these outcomes. I must add, however, that between a healthy diet, regular exercise, and an abundance of red raspberry leaf tea, my daughters were born in four hours and two-and-a-half hours, respectively. I’ll never know what did the trick, but the abundance of essential vitamins and minerals in red raspberry leaf can only contribute to the body’s health and balance, pregnant or not.

Red raspberry leaf can be found in health food stores, and there are also many varieties of pregnancy teas that combine raspberry leaf with other nutritive herbs. To prepare your own tea, boil one ounce of dried raspberry leaves in a pot of water.

Alternately, boil one ounce of dried leaves in a pint of water to brew an infusion. Cover for up to 24 hours to make the infusion extremely potent. For a poultice, simply wet the leaves and apply to the affected area.

he question of stem cells is currently the dominant subject in the debate over biotechnology and human genetics. Stem cells are of wide interest for medicine, because they have the potential, under suitable conditions, to develop into almost all of the different types of cells.

They should therefore be able to repair damaged or defective tissues (for example, destroyed insulin-producing cells in the pancreas). Many of the so-called degenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, for which there are as yet no effective therapies, could then be alleviated or healed.

What exactly is a stem cell? The definition of a stem cell found on wikipedia is a primal cell found in all multi-cellular organisms that retain the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division and can differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types. In other words, stem cells are “master cells” that have the ability to duplicate endlessly, and when they reach an organ they have the ability to become cells of that tissue. In short, they are the basic building blocks of our body.

They have the ability to change into any tissue of our body to rebuild itself in times of stress or aging. Out of the three different stem cells available –cord blood, embryonic, and adult– the last two are used most for stem cell research.

While embryonic stem cells are quite a controversial subject matter, adult stem cells (present in both adults and children) seem to possess a much greater potential for differentiation than previously assumed. It has been known for about 30 years that stem cells are present in the tissue of the adult, but it was assumed that they could only form cells of that particular tissue.

That is, reprogramming them was considered impossible. In recent years, however, pluripotent stem cells (being capable of affecting more than one organ or tissue) were discovered in various human tissues – in the spinal cord, the brain, the mesenchyme (connective tissue) of various organs, and in the blood. These pluripotent stem cells are capable of forming several cell types – principally blood, muscle, and nerve cells.

Thus, if your liver is in need of repair, an adult stem cell will then attach itself to the liver and begin to multiply and become a new, healthy liver cell. Adult stem cells are the natural way in which the body can rebuild itself.

Since every one of us is created and living from our own adult stem cells within our own bodies, one could surmise that adult stem cell research has the potential to provide a wide variety of potential therapeutic uses, without moral objection.

One has to conclude then, that focusing on only one principle of health, such as nutrition, is not enough. The overall, comprehensive picture must be studied and applied, which is why Dr. Robert Nara determined that there were seven factors in play for healthy teeth and gums for life:

ll the torture in your life comes from your thoughts. The pain and worry you experience does not arise from the external conditions you encounter. Your problems are not caused by other people, by money, by your body, by the government, or by the past. The dissatisfaction in your life arises from thought. If you had different thoughts about your life, you would have a different experience.

At first we don’t believe this. We are very attached to the idea that the world outside is where we will confront obstacles and will find joy. As a consequence, we search outside for the contentment we seek. But as we all probably know already, from the evidence of our own experience, we can’t find happiness out there. Sure, there may be momentary victories and satisfactions. Yet these moments of happiness are always soon threatened by changing conditions.

Although we cannot control outside conditions, we try to preserve our happiness or overcome our problems by influencing what happens in the outside world. We vote, save money, say the right things, do our chores, seek our entertainments, strive for recognition, all with the idea that these efforts will bring us, ultimately, the satisfaction we seek. In fact,

these actions seem reasonable and are certainly what the world expects of us.

Over time we grow accustomed to the idea that we can control outside conditions if we work hard enough, are smart enough, or are lucky.

Despite our efforts and the many thoughts we devote to controlling our lives, we encounter difficulties. Hard as we work, the work never ends. In many situations we are not smart enough.

And most of us aren’t very lucky. We frequently are not successful in getting what we want. We lose what we have through no fault of our own. And passing time is no friend. Our body ages, our beauty and well being diminish, our friends pass away.

All this expectation and angst is created by our thoughts. Since we believe we can control or influence results, we worry about results. When we don’t get what we desire, we think sadly about it. When we lose what we have, we experience sorrow and melancholy. Despite our accomplishments, we continually suffer disappointment. Since disappointment is a painful state of mind, we worry about the future, even develop anger over outer conditions that have, in our view, prevented us from achieving the happiness we seek.

States of mind like anger, disappointment, worry, fear, and sorrow are painful states of mind. You could say they are sufferings. Suffering is a state of mind.

Therefore, to avoid suffering we must change our state of mind.

Controlling the mind is a different proposition than controlling the external world. We’ll never conclusively control outside conditions, but we can learn to control our mind. Through a meditation practice and self-discipline, we gradually can enforce a positive view of the world, no matter what happens. Through repeated meditations to gain familiarity with a positive mind, we will find that this renewed state of mind cannot be disturbed by external happenings. In short, we will be happy.

Most people think this is too simpleminded to be true. Many would scoff at this viewpoint because of their conviction that the outside world is the problem, not their mind.

The proof is in the pudding. Where is the experience of happiness to be found?

In the mind, of course. If the mind is happy, does it really matter what happens on the outside? Think of all the people you know who have every advantage modern life has to offer. They have health, wealth, beauty, power, comfort. Can you say they are happy? Are they free of suffering? As the tabloids reveal day after day, like all of us they suffer continuously.

Recognizing the mind as the true source of happiness does not mean we ignore the external world. We engage in it fully, using the power of our thoughts to direct our actions. But we stop believing that these external actions will produce the inner results we seek. We rely on an awareness that contentment is up to us, on the inside, not up to what is happening on the outside. With such a mind, success and failure, achievements and obstacles are leveled out. We recognize them as the threads that make up the fabric of our life now. We are happy to have this life. It is me.

Stop The Itch of

ECZEMA!

None of the above sound like fun, and no one understands the burdens of eczema like the people who suffer from it on a daily basis. There are many over the counter products, as well as prescription drugs that can ease the symptoms of eczema. But if you are looking for an alternative route to alleviate that itch, there are several natural solutions that may help.

• Hydrate your skin. Make sure

you moisturize faithfully at least two times a day. The best type of moisturizer for an eczema sufferer is an emollient.

Emollients are substances that soften and moisturize the skin and decrease itching and flaking. They are generally oilier in consistency than a regular moisturizing cream or lotion. An emollient can also come in the form of emollient oils that can be added to a bath or applied to the body while you are in the shower. In the summertime, store your emollient in the refrigerator so it is cooling to the skin when you put it on.

• Try an oatmeal bath. Simply pur-

water in a bowl. Heat them to a boil and let cool. Then wash affected areas with the concoction. It may not completely relieve the itch, but it will go a long way in improving it.

• Lotions with blueberry leaves.

These lotions help to relieve inflammation that often accommodates itchy skin.

• Vitamin E. This is one of the best

vitamins for soothing eczema itch. Make sure to check labels, however, being sure to avoid synthetic vitamin E. The body can not process the artificial form of the vitamin. To recognize the difference on labels, know that synthetic vitamin E always has a “dl” instead of a “d” before its description. For example, synthetic vitamin E would look like this: dl-alpha tocopherol while genuine vitamin E would look like this: d-alpha tocopherol.

• Learn what triggers your condition. In some cases, allergens like dust mites, cat or dog dander, plant pollen, molds and foods may trigger eczema, as well as low or high humidity, stress or infections. Air purifiers may help.

I

was originally drawn to this book, which describes a revolutionary new way of alternative healing, by the recommendation of a colleague. I was even more interested in the book when I learned that the forward was written by Dr. William Tiller, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Stanford University -- many of you may be familiar with him from the movie What the Bleep Do We Know? He is one of a handful of physicists who are actively studying the effects of consciousness on quantum physics. In other words, “How do our thoughts create our reality?”

I had the privilege of meeting Dr. Tiller at a recent Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) training.

The author, Dr. Richard Bartlett, is a chiropractor with a busy practice just outside Seattle. In 1997 he discovered that by lightly touching his clients while applying focused mental intent, he could instantly shift physical misalignments that had plagued them for years. Again,

this was done by lightly touching or not touching at all. We all understand that there are healers in every country, people who can do miraculous things. But what was most astonishing to Dr. Bartlett was the discovery that he could teach anyone how to do this.

After that first experience of healing (which he calls transformation) through only light touching, he was determined to find out what happened. He began to consult scientists, researchers, other gifted healers and anyone who could offer him some insight. He eventually came to the conclusion that he was consciously accessing a mental state whereby the combination of quantum physics and his intent to heal was doing just that: healing the client.

He and his chiropractic colleague, Dr. Mark Dunn, then studied and perfected the method over a period of years, eventually deciding that they could spread this knowledge much faster if they March 2008

The transformation (healing) comes from summoning the desired outcomes, through intention, from the vast field of unformed possibility that we all live in: letting go and allowing the change to come through, while intending wellness and feeling gratitude. Easy to say, but for most people to perfect, it takes practice.

However, during practice at the seminar most people could get to that place.

When Dr. Bartlett called someone to the stage, a “spotter” would stand behind the client, because after he either pointed to that person or touched that person, they would fall over laughing. The “spotter” behind the client would catch them and lower them gently to the floor or to a chair.

Doctors Bartlett and Dunn believe that something always transforms within the client, even though it’s not visible.

It may be mental, physical, emotional or psychological. As a client, you feel different for some time afterwards. You start to make different decisions, to see things in a different light. Doctors Bartlett and Dunn (as well as many physicists) believe we are made up of light and information. Dr. Tiller says that “what appears to be pure magic in their healing treatments is, in fact, a rational manipulation of energies and information…. based upon their theoretical construct of reality, which is certainly ‘outside the box’ of our present paradigm.” One video on the web site shows Dr. Tiller sitting in the front row during a seminar, taking notes with a big grin on his face. Times are changing fast when a highly respected theoretical physicist becomes fascinated enough with an alternative medicine “technique” to write the forward for the book.

What we know about the human body right now, as well as what we know about the energies that affect the body and how our thoughts affect the body, is just the tip of the iceberg. Dr. Norman Shealy, founding president of the American Holistic Medical Association, believes that accessing different states of mind for healing is the medicine of the future.

straightforward expressions of the Self – the center, or core, of the psyche. Thus, while Freud has interpreted the dream image of a person climbing a flight of stairs as a veiled sign for sexual intercourse, Jung would have been more likely to interpret it as a symbol of the dreamer’s progression towards a higher plane of awareness. The deepest drive within the human psyche is not sex or aggression, argued Jung, but the drive to individuation, the psychological and spiritual development of the personality.

Jung observed that the human psyche has a unique structure and that this structure is reflected in our dreams and daily life. According to Jungian theory, the basic components of the psyche include: the ego, persona, shadow, anima/animus, and the Self. This article examines the ego and its manifestation in dreams. Subsequent articles will examine each of the other components in turn.

The ego is our conscious mind or worldview. When we use the word “I,” as in, “I believe this,” or, “I did that,” we are speaking from the perspective of the ego. In dreams, the ego is symbolized by the dreamer, or by a vehicle that the dreamer is in. A woman dreams, “I am on a boat in the ocean. I am alone. The boat is small. I am drifting about. I see a larger boat, which is a few miles away.

The water is calm. I jump in and start to swim towards the boat.”

Water is a symbol of the unconscious.

The dreamer and her boat are symbolic of her ego, her conscious orientation to life.

The dream points out the psychological reality that consciousness floats upon the unconscious and is quite small in relation to the unconscious. Like the dreamer, we are all on a journey, and the waves and March 2008

currents of our life are, frankly, negotiated more than they are chosen. (For example, did you choose your talents and gifts, your sexual orientation, your likes and dislikes?)

Because a large boat is safer and more stable on the ocean than a small boat, movement from the smaller boat to the larger symbolizes an opportunity for expansion and development of the personality (a similar meaning is found in dreams in which we discover a new room in our house, or when we dream of moving to a bigger or more sturdy house).

It will take courage and, perhaps, a leap of faith for the dreamer to claim her larger identity, but the calm waters suggest that the timing is right and the unconscious is on her side.

When analyzing dreams, it is important to understand that all elements of the dream are (by the “Self”) for a purpose.

The objects and their colors, the events, the people and the things they say, etc., all are part of the puzzle and worthy of reflection. A man dreams, “I am on a plane with many passengers, my family included. We are flying over the ocean when the plane goes into a spin. We are losing altitude and I realize in detached shock that we are going to crash.” As in the previous dream, a journey is depicted, but, whereas the boat (ego) is connected to the water (the unconscious) in the woman’s dream, the airplane flies high above the water in the man’s dream.

Depending on the dreamer’s psychological process, this could suggest a lack of groundedness in the dreamer’s conscious attitudes and approach to life. This is sometimes referred to as “inflation” of the ego. Our ego is inflated when we are too idealistic or too much in our head,

when we are “high” on anger (or drugs), or when we stubbornly pursue goals that are not in accord with our deeper nature. In other words, inflation results when the ego sets itself up as the center of the psyche rather than its servant.

On other occasions, fighting back might be the appropriate response to the pursuer. A woman who dreams that an abusive boyfriend is chasing her might do best by turning around and defending herself. If you dream of being chased, turn and face your pursuer. Ask him what he wants to tell you, listen to your instincts, and respond accordingly. Such an interpretation may be appropriate for this dream for two reasons.

First, the plane is going to crash. Dreams are a metaphor for some aspect of our psychic life and this metaphor clearly symbolizes a process of coming back to earth. Second, there are many passengers on the plane. Vehicles of mass transportation--whether a plane, train, bus, or cruise ship--are often symbols of collective consciousness and societal values.

In general, society encourages conformity and the adoption of the consensus worldview. However, societal attitudes and values can only take us so far on our journey for we are each called to become our unique selves, not clones. If you have a dream of being in a vehicle of group transportation, it can be helpful to ask yourself, “In what ways can my life become more reflective of my deeper values, gifts, and abilities?”

While we are on the subject of egos coming back down to earth, it may be instructive to briefly explore a similar motif from the world of film. “Snakes on a Plane” is a movie that was released to much fanfare in 2006. It’s the story of a passenger plane that seems headed towards a crash when poisonous snakes escape from the cargo hold. Movies, like myths, are the dreams of a society. They grab our collective attention because something about them speaks to our collective situation. Snakes are symbols of the psyche because, like the psyche, they continually grow beyond themselves by shedding their ill-fitting skin. The initial popularity of “Snakes on a Plane” could reflect a tendency towards psychological inflation among the people of this country, or, conversely, our nation’s inflated view of itself.

Movies involving clones probably reflect our general tendency to conform and let others do our thinking, feeling, and living.

(Probably laser-wielding clones blowing up buildings make for a more exciting movie than would a herd of mind-controlled sheep knocking down an outhouse.)

A final example of the ego in dreams is the dream motif of being chased. In these dreams, the dreamer is typically being chased by a monster, an animal, or some person or group of people unknown to them. It is also common to find in these dreams that the harder we run the more menacing the pursuer becomes. Dreams of being chased often symbolize the conscious mind’s estrangement from the unconscious. The dreamer/ego is being pursued by an aspect of the unconscious personality that has been ignored or rejected. So, for example, if you dream of being chased by a hungry lion, perhaps you need to nourish your “inner lion.” If you are passive, or have difficulty standing up for yourself, this lion energy and wisdom could be your salvation.

One of the ways the body responds to the tiny particles that trigger allergies is by producing mucus, which turns out to be a terrific medium for trapping and growing viruses and bacteria. Getting rid of the mucus, which means identifying and treating the allergy, makes it much less likely that you will catch those germs in the first place. As a general rule, infants who suffer more than six upper-respiratory infections a year, and school-age children and adults with more than three or four, should be evaluated for allergies.

• More than 75% of children who develop eczema—a skin condition that usually erupts around the mouth, on the inside of the elbow or behind the knee—also suffer an allergic reaction to food, mold or other environmental triggers. The foods that most commonly cause reactions are eggs, milk and peanuts.

A new report says your chronic colds and sniffles may be caused by irritants, not germs.

Most people don’t think of winter as an allergy season. But if you’re allergic to dust—or more accurately the mold, pollen, mites and insect parts that linger in dust—winter can be the worst time of year. When the furnace kicks on, all the dust that has settled into your carpet, atop the book-shelves and under the couch gets stirred up and wreaks havoc with your eyes, nose, sinuses and throat.

You and your doctor may dismiss your symptoms as just another winter cold. But while a cold generally lasts as long as 10 days, continued exposure to dust, if you’re allergic, can leave you feeling under the weather for weeks or months.

For the first time, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology has gathered experts from 21 professional health associations to develop The Allergy Report. Treating allergies doesn’t necessarily mean taking medication. “First identify the cause of the problem”, says Dr. Joel Karlin, an allergist in Lakewood, Colo. “Are there smokers in the house? Is the carpet old and mildewy? Is the dog sleeping on your bed?” Many people find relief simply by changing their environment. If you can’t bear to part with Fido, banning him from the bedroom can make a big difference. Special note to folks who are sensitive to ragweed: you may be cross-reactive to chamomile tea as well.

So if you feel as though you’ve had a cold all winter long, you may need to do something more than make chicken soup.

Note from the American Lung Association: Perfume, room deodorizers, cleaning chemicals, paint, and talcum powder are examples of triggers that must be avoided or kept to very low levels. Be sure that your environment is as free of irritants and allergens as you can make it. If possible, use air filters to make your home cleaner and more comfortable.

Is There More To Massage Than Swedish?

hy yes. There are many more massage modalities in which clients can receive lasting benefits. Some well known modalities are from the eastern traditions of massage: shiatsu (acupressure), Thai massage, and acupuncture.

Other non-eastern modalities include massage encouraging lymphatic drainage, myofascial release and cranial sacral therapy. These modalities come from a western clinical background and work well along side chiropractors and physical therapists.

Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds the muscles and holds them in place. Fascial lines run from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head.

Myofascial release uses extremely mild stretches to allow the body to be moved past its normal limitations. This can help with tension, post surgery healing, frozen shoulder, arm and or leg numbness, back pain, neck pain, and sore muscles from exercising without stretching. This massage technique works great on chronic injuries or chronic pain.

Swedish massage could be classified as “the good ‘ole feel good massage.” This modality is a series of strokes, glides, and kneading motions which can lengthen shortened muscles and ease the tension throughout the body. Swedish massage is great for helping the body learn how to relax and warming the body up for a chance to go into deeper body work.

Cranial Sacral Therapy could also be called “laying on of hands.” Pain is stored in the body and the only true way to release it is if the client is in a deep state of relaxation. Through laying on of

hands and energetically connecting with the bones, Cranial Sacral Therapy deeply relaxes, relieving pain to make the body feel whole again. Cranial Sacral Therapy could be the solution for clients who have tried everything to get rid of chronic pain. Clients who cannot receive massage because of sensitivity to pain, or have a very hard time relaxing, may also benefit from cranial sacral therapy.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a vital and necessary component of every cellular membrane, including those in the brain, nerves, muscles, skin, liver, intestines, and heart.

It is also converted into steroid hormones (e.g. estrogen, testosterone and cortisol), is the precursor to bile acids that aid in the digestion of food, especially fats, and is used in making vitamin D.

How does cholesterol cause damage in the body?

High cholesterol, also called hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, hyperlipidemia, and lipid disorder, is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Although, several recent studies suggest that cholesterol is not the true culprit, oxidation is. If oxidation causes damage to the lining of the arteries, then cholesterol (along with other substances) can cause the formation of plaques. If a plaque ruptures and dislodges, or if a clot is formed by platelets collecting on the plaque, a stroke may be the result. If plaque builds up enough to completely block the artery, the lack of blood flow will cause tissue death beyond that point.

What raises cholesterol?

The majority of cholesterol is made in the body; the minority is taken in through diet. Other factors that can affect non-diet contributions to high cholesterol include obesity, lack of physical activity, age, gender, heredity, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.

Genetics definitely can play a role, as with the overproduction of lipoprotein (a). Although a high saturated fat diet can raise cholesterol, it is more the imbalance of “bad fats” to “good fats” that is the problem. A balanced diet includes saturated fats, but is much more heavily weighted with the omega-3 fats found in nuts, fish, wild game and grass fed beef.

There is also no room in a healthy diet for hydrogenated oils or trans-fatty acids.

These fats along with refined sugars can greatly raise LDL and Triglyceride levels to an unhealthy level.

What natural products are scientifically shown to lower cholesterol?

Red Yeast Rice (traditionally used in China) is effective at lowering Total Cholesterol and Triglycerides. Its mechanism of action is the same as a statin pharmaceutical medication, a class of hypolipidemic drugs that lower cholesterol by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase. Therefore the same cautions need to be taken with its use. As with statins, CoQ10 should always be supplemented with Red Yeast Rice as they both decrease the body’s endogenous production of this vital coenzyme.

Niacin (not niacinamide), also known as vitamin B3, is capable of raising HDL and lowering LDL. Inositol hexanicinate is the safest form to use.

Policosanol, a natural mix of primary alcohols isolated from purified sugar cane wax, has performed better than numerous statin medications with fewer side effects at lowering cholesterol.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA), from fish oil, have been shown to favorably and therapeutically affect triglycerides and LDL levels.

Plant Sterols such as beta-sitosterol are also effective at lowering total cholesterol and LDL. These are found in fruits, vegetables, soybeans, peanuts, olive oil, and flax oil.

To receive the most comprehensive, safe and effective treatment plan, the above nutritional supplements should only be prescribed by a licensed health care practitioner who is capable of ordering and interpreting the necessary lab work and follow up lab work to monitor for success and potential side effects. If a patient is taking Red Yeast Rice or Niacin,

liver enzymes should be periodically measured. Patients diagnosed with liver disease or diabetes or when on certain medications need to be monitored carefully even when taking natural products.

A patient should never discontinue current medications without first discussing it with their doctor or with the assistance of a health care practitioner.

What other factors should be taken into consideration when creating a plan to lower cholesterol and optimize total health?

A 1998 study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine found that, due to the standard American diet and lifestyle, most atherosclerosis begins in childhood and increases with age.

Therefore, by the time most Americans are 40 years old, they have definite signs of cardiovascular disease.

The risk of developing cardiovascular disease is inversely proportional to the dietary intake of fruits and vegetables. Eight or more servings a day correlates with a 30% less chance of having a heart attack or stroke. Since cardiovascular disease is an inflammatory disease and diet and lifestyle changes can reverse the damage created by this inflammation, it is never too late to make these changes. Therefore, a lifestyle that includes a diet high in fruits and vegetables, plentiful omega-3 fats, exercise, maintenance of optimal weight, minimal stress and the absence of smoking and trans-fats would be the best approach. Natural substances should be introduced when needed and pharmaceutical medications as a last resort.

Saline Swimming Pools What is a Saline System?

A Saline (salt-water) purification system for your pool provides on-site production of a sanitizer necessary to maintain safe, healthy and algae-free water. It involves no handling, storage or adding of chemicals to the water. When properly sized for its application, it eliminates the need to purchase sanitizing chemicals.

How does this system work?

Using every day table salt (sodium chloride) that dissolves into water, the water is subjected to a simple process of electrolysis and a very effective water sanitizer is produced. When the water and salt is passed through the cell portion of the Saline System equipment, chlorine gas is automatically produced. The chlorine gas dissolves instantaneously into the water (so is never a hazard), and produces high levels of sanitizer/oxidizer, preventing the formation of ‘chloramines’ and other chlorine compounds and provides a safe and measurable amount of sanitizer.

How salty is the water?

EXFOLIATION The Science of Taking It Off

ost of us already know about the importance and general benefits of exfoliation, including, a obtaining a softer, smoother, less aged appearance. But how much does the average skinsavvy consumer really know about what is going on beneath the top layers of the skin? Let’s take a look at some of the different ways exfoliation can be utilized in your life, and what you should be aware of when you “take it off.”

The history of exfoliation can be traced back to ancient Egyptian times when abrasive masks, minerals and alabaster particles were used for this purpose. Since then, a variety of substances have been used to peel, exfoliate, and rejuvenate the skin. These include the use of acids, poultices of minerals and plants, and direct irritants such as fire and sand-paper like materials.

Does exfoliation (desquamation) occur naturally? Desquamation is the shedding of the outer layers of the skin. For example, after the rash of measles fades, there is desquamation.

This word comes from the Latin, “desquamare”, meaning to scrape the scales off a fish!

As we age, the glue–like intercellular cement holding the cells together becomes thicker. This results in a build up in the layers of skin cells. The skin sloughing process then becomes more difficult to accomplish and the skin has a thicker, less-toned appearance. This process can be influenced by the environment, hormones (estrogens, androgens, and epidermal growth factor), and vitamin deficiencies (A and D). With the impact of all these factors on the desquamation process, the importance of skin exfoliation is clear. By eliminating the build up of dead and deranged skin cells (stratum corneum), regeneration of new skin cells is stimulated, resulting in an improved appearance, tone, and feel of the skin The two methods of exfoliation are chemical, and physical. Chemical exfoliation can vary in degree of abrasion and

cost, from mild toners all the way up to dermatological peels that could cost thousands of dollars. Chemical exfoliation employs agents such as enzymes (i.e. papain, bromelain, and protease enzymes from bacillus microbes) and alpha hydroxy acids (AHA; i.e. lactic acid, glycolic acids, malic acids), beta hydroxy acids (BHA; i.e. salicylic acid) and Retinol (i.e. Vitamin A). While the exact mechanism of action is still being argued, some believe that AHA’s do not exfoliate in the same conventional way that mechanical exfoliants or BHA’s do. It is thought that alpha hydroxy acids primarily affect the skin while normalizing cell turn over in the epidermis; this would stimulate the formation of healthy skin, which includes sloughing, decreased formation of dry scales on the skin’s surface and stimulation of the cell cycle.

Common chemical exfoliants include AHA’s; glycolic acid is the most widely used and well known out of this group.

This substance is usually made from sugar cane. The use of lactic acid, derived primarily from milk, is believed to go back to Cleopatra, who reportedly used soured milk on her skin.

Lactic acid is milder and less irritating than most glycolic acid.

Both glycolic acid and lactic acid stimulate collagen synthesis.

However, Lactic acid has additional unique benefits: increased glycosaminoglycans (relating to connective tissue), natural moisturizers, and an increase in ceramides (an epidermal barrier lipid).

In the BHA category is salicylic acid, primarily a keratolytic agent, which dissolves the stratum corneum layer by layer from the outside in, and has been shown to have some effect on hyperpigmentation at very high levels of concentration (50%).

In recent years, retinol (vitamin A) has been included in exfoliation formulas because the skin converts retinol to retinoic acid, a potent skin exfoliation, and anti-aging agent. When used on a daily basis, studies show that retinol improves the signs of

photo-aging as well as normal chronological aging. One study showed that retinol mimicked the activity of retinoic acid by stimulating the thickening of the epidermis without the irritation sometimes seen with the use of retinoic acid. Other studies also showed that retinol slowed down the degradation of collagen in the skin with sun exposure, by inhibiting the action of collagenase, the enzyme responsible for this degradation.

Mechanical or physical exfoliation utilizes either a tool (i.e. a brush, sponge) or a substance (i.e. salt, sugars, corncob meal, rice bran, oatmeal). These are the most common forms, and are usually found in facial and body scrubs. Micodermabrasion is the most forceful of the mechanical methods. It loosens and reduces the outer layer of cells when friction and abrasion are applied. The outcome varies depending on the amount of friction applied and the abrasive used. It is important to note that excessive abrasion can result in skin irritation. Therefore the International Dermal Institute does not recommend the use of crushed fruit pits, shells, or similar substrates.

Other considerations: If you are using Retin-A, Renova or any other exfoliating product, you should discontinue for at least two weeks before trying another form. If you are taking Accutane (a powerful acne medicine with several side effects and contraindications), or have taken Accutane within the last six months, you should not receive or perform (on yourself) any kind of exfoliation treatments. Do not perform or receive any type of exfoliation on burned or irritated skin, or skin that has been waxed within the past 24 hours. In addition, the dead outer layer of the skin acts as a sun shield; with less of the layer you are more susceptible to sun damage. It then becomes more important to use a daily sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 after an exfoliation treatment.

Whether you choose a mechanical or chemical means of exfoliation, each can be of benefit and provide enhancement for your skin. Consistent exfoliation prevents clogged pores, acne, ingrown hairs, and certain types of infection. It can also prevent scarring blemishes and help to reduce the appearance of existing scars. Exfoliation can also increase circulation and help to make the other steps in your facial regimen (i.e. toners, cleansers, and moisturizers) more effective by unblocking the pores for better absorption. It is worth the time to find the right exfoliation agent for your specific skin type and needs. And of course, always use caution and heed the warnings associated with the exfoliation process of your choice.

Breakfast…

Don’t Leave Home Without It!

H

ow often do you find yourself rushing out the door early in the morning and forgetting to eat breakfast? You’re not alone. Breakfast is one of the most frequently skipped meals in America. However, it might be worth your time to pause and understand just what happens to your body when you skip this very important meal... or when you grab a cup of coffee and a sweet roll on your way to work to feed your appetite.

What is breakfast and why is it so important? Breakfast is the “breaking of your fast”. Typically breakfast comes after 10-12 hours of not eating. Your metabolism has slowed down during sleep. Breakfast is a signal to your body to wake-up your metabolism and gear up for the day. When you skip it, your metabolism stays stalled out, your blood sugar stays low, you have less energy, and you crave junk foods as a “pick me up.” When you eat a healthy breakfast containing lean protein and fiber rich foods, your blood sugar gradually rises to normal levels; your metabolism picks up and puts you on track for even energy levels throughout the rest of the day.

It’s a myth that if you skip breakfast calories, you’ll lose weight. Actually, the opposite is true. People who skip breakfast, tend to eat more calories throughout the day than those who eat breakfast. Studies indicate that those who skip breakfast consume more calorically dense food, have higher cholesterol levels, and greater insulin resistance than those who eat breakfast.

You may have heard the saying, “eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.” There’s truth to this saying. Research shows that calories eaten early in the day provide greater satiety than the same calories eaten later. Also, people who eat more calories earlier in the day consume fewer total calories throughout the day. When large meals are eaten later in the day, they are less satisfying and more calories are consumed. Moreover, eating breakfast has been consistently correlated with healthy weight and longevity.

How do you work this important meal into your hectic morning schedule? First of all, coffee and doughnuts do not constitute a healthy breakfast. Neither do most cereals, bagels, or muffins. It is best to eat high quality protein, and fiber-rich, low-glycemic carbs that won’t spike your blood sugar.

Protein shakes can be delicious and satisfying. One of my favorite breakfasts is a protein shaking blended with fruit and ground flax seed and powdered greens. Try blending in a Clementine or tangerine to create an orange creamcicle. Add some instant coffee for a latte flavor. Mix in some nut butters (almond or macadamia are very tasty). Hard boiled eggs are ready to go along with a piece of fresh fruit.

Most cereals are too refined and spike your blood sugar. However, a whole grained cereal with some chopped nuts and fresh fruit can start your day off well. The key is to make sure it is WHOLE GRAIN and no sugar added!

The same holds true for oatmeal.

Instant and quick oats will raise your blood sugar quickly. Try some steel cut oats with berries and chopped raw nuts. This takes longer to cook, so you may want to prepare it the night before.

You might also create your own breakfast wrap variations. Whole grain wraps stuffed with left over chicken, turkey, meat or cheese and left over veggies. Or lettuce wraps with hardboiled eggs and sliced peppers. Or turkey slices rolled and stuffed with avocado and tomatoes.

Let your imagination create quick, healthy breakfasts for you and your family. Everyone will be healthier, happier, and more productive throughout the day. As an extra bonus, you may discover some of those unwanted pounds slipping away!

Clients need to remove only their shoes and any wrist jewelry before the start of the session. The art is accommodating for those with physical issues who cannot lie down, the client is helped to find a comfortable seated or other position before starting the session and is not required to assist in any way. The practitioner then reads energy pulses on each wrist. These indicate the current state of the balance of the body’s life force energy, and show where energy is blocked. The practitioner then applies a gentle touch of light pressure on the related body points called safety energy locks (where energy meridians converge or overlap), holding different points in tandem, all the while synchronizing the pulses felt in the wrist of the client. After a certain amount of time, the practitioner will move on to a different combination of points in order to bring about a particular result, whether to relieve pain, insomnia, fatigue or restore emotional, hormonal, and mental balance. Each holding pattern is called a “flow”, and each flow addresses a different aspect of the body’s well being. Over the course of a session, a practitioner may use a sequence of flows that involves points on the fingers, toes, arms, legs and back. The energy pulses are checked again at the end of the session. The effects percolate for about eight hours, but even afterward the body is likely to be more relaxed and centered than it was prior to the session.

How Is Sugaring Different From Other Hair Removal?

The sugaring technique leads to permanency–after a number of treatments the hair follicle begins to deplete. The hair grows in more refined each time.

Sugar can extract hair as short as 1/16th inch. When you extract hair during early stages of growth (the anagen phase), the bulb is attached to the dermal papilla and it is full and lush. When it is removed it scrapes along the follicle wall taking with it the inner root sheath. When the inner root sheath is depleted it causes the follicle wall to collapse therefore not allowing the hair to have a place to grow back.

Does It Hurt?

In body sugaring, the sugar paste is molded onto the skin by the practitioner.

The sugar is applied in the opposite direction of hair growth. It is molded several times gently over the skin, the sugar seeps into the hair follicle and wraps around the hair shaft. A simple flicking motion removes the sugar and eases the hair from the follicle by the root in the direction of growth. This is a more complete and gentle extraction of the hair that leaves the skin much healthier. The client feels little discomfort, and many clients say it feels like receiving a mini-massage. or those who have an intolerance to gluten and those who simply choose to avoid it, finding meatless dishes that are both filling and unique, can be a challenge.

However, the delicious flavor and nutritious quality of lentils present hope for a variety of vegetarian meals.

Lentils are one of those foods that deserve a â&#x20AC;&#x153;best all aroundâ&#x20AC;? award. These legumes are an excellent source of protein, complex carbohydrates, vitamin B12, fiber, lysine, iron and magnesium. All of these nutrients make lentils an almost all encompassing food. By simply combining lentils with rice or other grains one can establish a complete protein. The high levels of iron and soluble fiber make lentils an energy giving food.

While these super seeds are replenishing your iron levels and therefore refueling your energy, the soluble fiber is also helping to stabilize your blood sugar. So, your body will burn the energy slowly, in turn keeping you strong and steady for hours. Below is a recipe for a lentil and wild rice salad with a Mediterranean flare. It is equally wonderful, hot or cold, so let the weather guide you. This dish is genuinely nourishing in substance and exotic in flavor. Now, relax, replenish and enjoy!

Mediterranean Lentil Salad (Serves two or more) 2 cups cooked and cooled lentils 1 cup cooked and cooled wild rice 1/2 cup roasted and chopped red bell peppers 1/4 cup thinly sliced kalamata olives 1/2 cup artichoke hearts 2 tablespoons thinly sliced red onion 2 chopped tomatoes 3 tablespoons feta cheese

Method of Preparation: Sort through the dry beans and remove any debris or shriveled lentils, then rinse and drain. Cover the lentils with water in a medium size pot and boil for 2-3 minutes, reduce the heat and simmer until tender. The cooking time depends on the variety of lentils that you are working with, however green lentils take about 30 minutes. Be sure to keep on eye on the lentils within the last 5-10 minutes of cooking, so as not to let them become mushy.

When the lentils have finished cooking and cooling, combine them with the rest of the ingredients in a medium sized mixing bowl. Toss the ingredients in the sun-dried tomato vinaigrette and salt and pepper the salad to taste.

Sun-dried Tomato Balsamic Vinaigrette 1/8 cup balsamic vinegar 3 cloves garlic quartered 4-6 sun-dried tomatoes 4 green onions (the white and tender green parts only) 1/4 cup fresh chopped basil 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

Method of Preparation: Blend the garlic, sun-dried tomatoes, green onions, chopped basil and balsamic in a food processor until it forms a paste.

While the processor is still running slowly add the olive oil and allow the mixture to emulsify. Season the vinaigrette with salt and pepper to taste.

Finding Your True Purpose – Part 2

I

n February’s issue, you learned that negative energy blocks positive energy, hindering you from being able to discover your true purpose. In this continuation, you will look at two other phenomena that, when lacking, may prevent the realization of your life’s true purpose.

The second thing that blocks our soul’s purpose is judgment. Have you noticed how some are so quick to judge and so slow to change their own ways? Some act as if they were given a license to be judge and jury. The truth is they weren’t. I like what Dr. Wayne Dyer has to say about this, “Judging someone as stupid, doesn’t mean they’re stupid. It means… you are defining them as stupid!” Those who run judgment are the ones who end up paying the price. When somebody is judging, they really have some part of themselves in judgment and probably aren’t even conscious of it. When someone is free from their own judgment, they will no longer judge others; they will naturally allow everyone in their world to be exactly as they need to be.

When someone is judging they are preventing their higher self from moving through them. Someone can be on hit and miss basis with their higher self at best. Judgment creates a separation or division which keeps them out of alignment with their higher self.

What’s interesting is that the universe does not judge us. Judgment is something we as people have created. Once we are in judgment we are no longer in the flow of life.

If we are really on the planet to be humanitarians, how does it help to continue down this path of holding someone or anyone for that matter in judgment? What most people don’t realize is that when we are in judgment, the very thing we are judging we lock into place and strengthen. How many of us have made statements like, “I’ll never do what they do.” or “I’ll never become like them.” Then at some later point in life we realize that we are becoming the very person we said we would never become like. That’s because, those statements were coming from our own judgment we had that person in when we were making those statements.

The opposite of judgment is a state of total and complete acceptance. Love will transcend and melt judgment. Wherever there is judgment there can be no love. Wherever there is unconditional love, judgment cannot exist for any length of time. This is exactly what we are to be learning, how to love more and judge less. There is a beautiful yet simple Sioux Indian prayer we can use, “Great Spirit, help me never to judge another until I have walked in his moccasins for two weeks.”

The third thing is imbalance. Within us we have masculine and feminine energy, or yin/yang energy. When these two energies are not in harmony with each other an imbalance occurs. This simply means that there has been a split between these two significant parts of ourselves. One part is getting more energy than the other part and one part feels judged causing this imbalance. The latter part is living in this energy of judgment which means it’s locked in this dark place and it’s not allowed to come into the light and be acknowledged.

Most men and women today are leading their lives more with their masculine energy and suppressing their feminine energy which can create a lot of pain. Because the feminine energy is the receiv-

ing side of us, this can also create an experiential effect in our lives which can manifest into the lack of money, lack of time and/or lack of love. Note that I will be introducing a new seminar soon entitled “Harmony” that will help to balance the masculine and feminine energies within us all.

What creates the imbalance? Negative energy that is being held onto very tightly in the subconscious body, which again is resistance.

Resistance is really futile and depending how positional we are with our resistance can also be very painful.

How do we become balanced? Well first, we must learn how to become aware of when we are resisting so we can let go of whoever or whatever we’re resisting. Then we truly can, should we choose to, purge and let go little by little of all this negative material that’s been trapped within the subconscious body once and for all.

We will all eventually discover this truth, that regardless of how challenging our lives can be, our saving grace will be found in the real cellular healing of our subconscious body. It sets us free from all our negativity, it sets us free from all our judgment, and it brings us back into balance. If one can do it… everyone can do it. Realize your true potential and purpose, not through the process of trying to figure it out in your head, but by releasing the negativity that you have been holding on to in your subconscious body. The way to your higher self and soul purpose is through your lower self, the subconscious self!
