s Here we are, another March. So quickly we find ourselves asking the same question over and over, “oh my goodness; is it already [insert month here]?” It’s funny that we all seem surprised how quickly our lives rush by--yet, there are a few of us who continually fill it with more and more activity. I am definitely guilty of that act. In fact, I’ve heard the motherly “you’re burning your candle at both ends” from a few people. So, as we assess our schedule, and try to squeeze in one more “little” thing, keep this in mind: staying strong is key! If we stay strong, we’re healthier, less susceptible to illness and fatigue, and we’ll make it through our busiest moments with a little sanity intact.

’m strong to the fin-ich, Cause I eats me spinach…” Chock-full of nutrients and antioxidants, spinach is an excellent food choice! It is high in Vitamin A, C, E, K and B6, to name a few. It’s also provides calcium, iron and protein—for strong bones and muscles!

If you’re already feeling a little weak, take a gander at our herbs and spices column; albeit gentle, Echinacea is surprisingly brawny in its own right. here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. In his book, the “ABC of Asthma, Allergies and Lupus,” Dr. Batmanghelidj says cholesterol is part of the body’s drought management system. Dehydration causes the blood to become acidic so it pulls water out of the cells lining the arterial walls to dilute the acidity. These delicate cell walls are weakened by that water loss and are further damaged by the toxicity of concentrated blood, so the fast rush of blood against the arterial walls produces microscopic abrasions. Dr. Batmanghelidj says the body places cholesterol in the arteries to act as a grease gauze to prevent the artery wall from rupturing.
For years the medical community has touted exercise as a preventative for heart disease. Jim Fixx had a father who died at age 43 of a heart attack, and Jim had a congenitally enlarged heart. At the age of 36, Jim became a marathon runner believing it would make his heart healthy. After much success writing books about the health benefits of running, he died of a heart attack at age 52. The autopsy revealed that atherosclerosis had blocked one coronary artery 95 percent, a second 85 percent, and a third 70 percent. Exercise was not effective in preventing Jim’s heart attack. A conversation overheard in a grocery store parking lot involved four men--in their 60’s--talking about a mutual friend. One fellow declared, “Can you believe he had a heart attack and then a stroke all in the same day?” Another man continued, “Hard to believe, especially about a guy who was fit enough to run in five Iron Man Triathlons!” (The Iron Man consists of swimming 2.4 miles, then biking 112 miles, and then running 26.2 miles without a rest period and a time limit of 17 hours--a grueling ordeal likely to result in dehydration.)
When the body is dehydrated, so is the blood; which causes it to flow less like water and more like molasses. There is also less blood volume so it becomes difficult for the heart to pump it past any blockage. Being thicker, the blood is more likely to grab onto plaque, break it loose, and carry it into a vital organ such as the heart or brain. If blood cannot flow past a blood clot, oxygen does not get to the heart or brain. Since the heart works so hard, it depends on a steady flow of oxygen rich blood. Without oxygen, the heart goes into shock and seizes up as a heart attack. Without oxygen, brain cells die and thus some brain or bodily functions are lost because of the stroke.
Recently, medical researchers declared that the strenuous exercise of marathon runners actually damaged heart tissue. They quickly concluded that since the heart damage occurred during heavy exercise, that makes the exercise the causation. But another thought is that such exertion, including the Iron Man, is an ideal situation for dehydration. Not enough water means the blood is too thick, which causes the heart to work very hard at circulating it, and that strain could have caused the damage.

George Le-Bert, a cardiologist with Baptist Health Specialists says the connection between heart health and water consumption needs to be explored more thoroughly. Some medical observers think the magic may be in the minerals. People living in areas with hard water containing calcium and magnesium tend to have fewer heart attacks. Le-Bert says “It seems these minerals have some beneficial effect on blood pressure, which can improve heart health.
Water Is a Great Preventative Researchers at Loma Linda University tracked 20,000 people, aged 38 to 100, for the years 1973 through 1979. According to the chief researcher, Dr. J. Chan, those people who drank a mere five glasses of water per day lowered their risk of fatal coronary heart disease by 54 percent in men and 41 percent in women. Dr. Chan prefers plain water because it is absorbed quickly into the blood to prevent artery clogging clots. Other liquids require more digestion, which draws liquids from the blood into the intestines and leaves the blood thicker. The Loma Linda study found that when coffee, tea, alcohol (being diuretics they wash water from the body) juice or milk are the liquid of choice, they produce a 46 percent increase in heart attacks.
Upon stirring from a stroke induced coma, a friend of this writer immediately asked for watermelon--even as the hospital IV dripped sodium and potassium into his vein. Such a strange thing to ask for until you realize watermelon is full of water and potassium. The human body knows what it needs to re-hydrate and prevent blood clots. Potassium is a simple mineral with a crucial job: one hundred thousand times a day it helps trigger the heart to rhythmically squeeze blood through the body.
A 2002 American Journal of Medical Epidemiology article published a study revealing people who drank five or more glasses of plain water per day have a much lower risk (50 percent or more) of fatal coronary heart disease compared with those who drank less than two glasses each day. The benefits were not the same if five or more glasses of other fluids were ingested. This 50 percent reduction is more effective than other measures such as weight loss or exercise.
Perhaps water, salt, potassium, calcium and magnesium are the better prescription for heart and brain health. Please also note that an astute reader questioned February’s kidney article and Anne’s eGFR of 67 being “normal.” That indeed was an unintentional misstatement. It should have said her degeneration had been reversed and that by continuing hydration, Anne hoped to move that number up and out of the disease range completely.
The center for Disease Control states that high blood pressure puts a person at risk for heart attack and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States. In June of 2007, Bob Peterson was admitted to the hospital with a stroke and heart attack. His blood pressure at the time was 240/160 and his doctor gave little hope of his survival and told Bob’s wife to get his affairs in order. After 18 hours, the doctors had lowered his blood pressure to 194/116. Several months after his release, he began re-hydration with 16 glasses of ionized water each day. On January 21, 2013, his blood pressure was 117/78. Bob continues to drink his water religiously.

Chiropractors and acupuncturists Dr. John Amaro and Dr. Debra Richel say that as many as 80 percent of Americans live in a continuous state of subclinical dehydration--and so these doctors sound the alarm about Cardiovascular Shock. Continual lack of fluids during outdoor summer sports or work can lead to life-threatening dehydration. Dr. Anjali Dewan found through a number of researches that hot weather increases the risk of heart attack. High environmental temperatures increase sweating, which depletes the body’s water and salt necessary for hydration. It also reduces the amount of blood so the heart has to work harder, which can induce a heart attack. Since dehydration thickens the blood, it enhances the clotting process also.

Thyroid disorders affect most of us. Thyroid blood tests are notoriously inaccurate. You can have enough thyroid hormones in the blood, but if the thyroid receptors in every cell of our body are blocked, they can’t receive the message. It is like having a newspaper in front of your face with your eyes closed. The message is there, but you can’t read it. There are many thyroid receptor blockers in our environment, such as bisphenol A (in plastic water bottles), fluoride toothpaste, cruciferous vegetables, egg whites, beans, radiation, pregnancy and many more. So, if you are tired, depressed, cold, have dry skin, hair loss, infertility, heavy periods, constipation and poor digestion, consider natural thyroid supplementation.

Diet If you eat junk food, fast food, soda, gum, damaged, processed omega 6 oils, such as corn oil, soybean oil and Canola oil, you will suffer in the long run. reast cancer is the disease most women fear most. An abundance of published research links high-normal blood sugar levels to increased breast cancer risk. In a recent issue of Life Extension magazine (Feb. 2013), an analysis of the scientific literature was published. Of 12 separate studies identified, nine showed an association between higher fasting “normal” blood sugars and higher breast cancer risk.
Use of the prescription drug Metformin (as discussed in one of my past articles) can lower blood sugar levels by impeding excess production of glucose in the liver and improving insulin sensitivity. The down side is you have to get a prescription from your doctor and most of them won’t prescribe it to “healthy” people. The good news is that close to the same effects can be accomplished by taking green tea extract, green coffee bean extract, chromium, vanadium and lipoic acid.
For example, premenopausal women with a fasting blood sugar above 84mg/dL, (normal range is 65-100), had more than two times the risk of developing breast cancer compared to those with a blood sugar below that number. In another study involving more than 10,000 women in Italy, it was found that women in the highest glucose “quartile” (average 96mg/dL) had a 63 percent increased risk for breast cancer compared to those in the lowest “quartile”(average 73mg/dL) after being fully adjusted for multiple variables. The authors stated, “we found that elevated fasting glucose levels were significantly associated with subsequent occurrence of breast cancer in both pre and post-menopausal women.”
One study showed that consumption of 12 cups of coffee daily shows similar benefits, but then there is the issue of all that caffeine! References: 1. High-normal blood sugar is a leading cause of premature death overlooked by mainstream doctors today. Most people with these high-normal blood sugars are not diagnosed with diabetes, but just by having a fasting sugar above 85mg/dL, their risk of death from cardiovascular disease increases by 40 percent. hat is Scoliosis?
The word Scoliosis is derived from the ancient Greek word, skoliosis, meaning “obliquity, bending.” It is a medical condition where a person’s spine is curved from side to side. It is a complex three dimensional deformity, however if viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with scoliosis may look more like an “S” or a “C,” rather than a straight line. How is Scoliosis Diagnosed? Most scoliosis curves are initially detected on school screening exams, by a child’s pediatrician, family doctor, chiropractor, or by a parent. However, some initial screenings can be inaccurate. This is because in the early stages it is easy to miss scoliosis to the untrained eye. If caught early, some forms of scoliosis can be stopped or returned back to normal with proper treatment at this stage. Some clues that a child may have scoliosis include uneven shoulders, a prominent shoulder blade, uneven waist, or leaning to one side. The diagnosis of scoliosis and the determination of

the type of scoliosis are then made by a careful bone exam and an X-ray to evaluate the magnitude of the curve. What causes Scoliosis? Scoliosis is caused by vertebral anomalies present at birth (congenital), which attributes to 15 percent of all cases. It can also develop from an unknown cause (idiopathic), which accounts for 65 percent of all cases. Or, it can develop as a secondary condition of another condition, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, or a physical trauma, which accounts for 10 percent of all cases. Patients having reached skeletal maturity are less likely to have a worsening case. Some severe cases of scoliosis can lead to diminishing lung capacity, putting pressure on the heart, and restricting physical activities. Who Gets Scoliosis? Approximately two to three percent of Americans at age 16

have scoliosis. Less than 0.1 percent of people with scoliosis have spinal curves measuring greater than 40 degrees, which is the point at which surgery becomes a consideration. Overall, girls are more likely to be affected than boys. Idiopathic scoliosis (no clear cause) is most commonly a condition of adolescence affecting those aged 10 through 16. Idiopathic scoliosis may progress during the “growth spurt” years, but usually will not progress during adulthood. What is the Traditional Medical Management of Scoliosis? It is complex and is determined by the severity of the curvature and skeletal maturity, which together help predict the likelihood of progression. The conventional options, in order: 1. This condition affects about seven million people in the United States. A scoliosis spinal columns curve of 10° or less affects one and a half to three percent of individuals. Although grading based on a curve may encourage study by creating competition between students, it also sends the message that quality and competence are relative when they are not. o review: Our brains control everything. Everything you have ever experienced, felt, or conducted in life, is due to brain function. Also under control of brain function is your endocrine (hormonal) and immune system (the system that heals you). Thus leaving it impossible for a person to maximally heal, or become healthy mentally or physiologically, without a healthy brain. Even the ability to enjoy, perceive, sense and experience life is dictated by the FIRING RATE and health of your brain.

Pylori, etc.) or improper glucose delivery (low or high blood sugar), you will have poor immune function and not be very happy. It is a symbiotic relationship. The brain controls every cell and function in the body, but the physiology of each cell in return effects brain function.
To have a proper firing rate of the brain, one needs proper brain cell (neurons) stimulation, proper glucose balance, proper oxygen and a lack of inflammation. Anything that occurs in the body such as inflammatory responses, abnormal immune responses (i.e. MS, celiac disease, fibromyalgia, Hoshimotos, Lupus etc.), blood sugar functions (i.e. hypoglycemia, insulin resistance or diabetes) gut, liver, food allergies, smoking, mental and emotional stress, and excessive alcohol disrupts oxygen delivery and creates inflammatory responses in the brain. Brain function is what controls aging. Aging is really neurodegeneration (wear and tear on brain cells from above referred process). As brain serving mechanisms deteriorate, function of the entire body deteriorates. We lose energy, become unstable, gut function gets worse, immune function get worse, people get “old.” As brain function deteriorates, so does “health” and the ability to heal in every respect. This is why children respond better to all types of treatment--they are more active (stimulation to brain) and have healthier brain cells because they haven’t been alive as long to experience the standard American diet and stresses. Poor brain function is involved in virtually every abnormal symptom or condition you experience. But it is particularly under-appreciated as the cause in the most difficult chronic conditions, i.e. Peripheral Neuropathy, Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, vertigo, balance, dizziness, migraines, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, restless leg syndrome and more. So how do you address these issues through brain function? The first thing that must occur is a comprehensive history addressing all aspects of physiology that will affect proper brain firing. This includes the gut (small and large intestines, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, and stomach), blood chemistry (PH, allergies, electrolytes, liver detox, blood sugar), stress response, endocrine function and potential inflammatory contributors. Remember, all or any of these will affect brain function and ultimately premature aging, ability to heal and response to treatment for chronic pain. Then, of course, a complete neurological and physical must be preformed with particular attention to brain function (how its firing) and more so particularly to which specific parts of the brain are not functioning (misfiring) normally. Treatment is dictated by the exam and targeted specialized testing which addresses the key components for proper brain function. Proper fuel (proper glucose delivery, proper oxygen delivery, and elimination of inflammation) and activation (stimulating the weak misfiring part of the brain) of the brain with specific brain based rehabilitative exercises, must be established for the body to heal and age effectively. In functional chiropractic neurology and functional medicine, standardized testing procedures are applied to determine the specific approach for each patient. For example, if inflammation is the key chemical component of disturbing brain function (there are at least 18 functions in the body that when not working properly can cause inflammation) testing and history should provide answers as to the causes of inflammatory disturbances that need to be addressed. In Functional Medicine and Chiropractic Neurology the “causes” of brain dysfunction and chronic disease and pain are well understood, as is the testing procedures. We know what we’re looking for. Once

found, it is simply a matter of addressing the different aspects of one’s physiology that are disturbing oxygen delivery, blood sugar balance, or creating inflammation in the brain. There can be many combinations of these factors in different patients. Therefore, a person with a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue will frequently not necessarily have the same “causes” creating the pain in their bodies as the next person with the same diagnosis. While the “body chemistry” is becoming stable, exercises or stimulations appropriate for the weak firing part of the brain (determined by neurological examination) are applied to strengthen those areas. Remember when the involved areas are strengthened by activation/stimulation, stabilizing sugar, oxygen levels and reduce inflammation, the symptoms caused by that part of the brain “misfiring’ will reduce or resolve. The stimulations are natural brain stimulators, such as vibration, unilateral exercise (lifting a weight with one hand) music in one ear, pleasant or unpleasant smell in one nostril, eye exercises (very powerful) and too many more to list here. Once the area of the brain becomes strong from exercise and proper “fuel” supply, pain will reduce or resolve, function will return, “aging” will slow down and the immune system will function better. You’ll notice no mention of drugs is made. Most physiology can be addressed with even minimum involvement of herbs and botanicals in the long term. The bodies own brain, endocrine, immune system is enough to resolve the most difficult of chronic issues if all the impediments to its proper function can be removed. So, if you just feel bad or if you feel you’re aging too rapidly; if you have chronic conditions that won’t respond to traditional treatment, Functional Chiropractic Neurology/Functional Medicine approach to these conditions might just be the answer you’re looking for! iomimetic dentistry is the art and science of restoring ones mouth in a way which mimics the natural biology. Newer technological advances in dental bonding materials allow us to replace missing and diseased tooth structure, while conserving the remaining healthy structure.

Many people with metal allergies and concern over mercury in dental materials have been grateful for the advancement in resinbased composite and porcelain restorations. These look like natural teeth when the restoration is placed. Clifford Sensitivity testing can give us a list of which dental materials need to be avoided and which ones should be safe to use in patients who are prone to allergies and immune response problems. This is one test available to practitioners with a simple blood draw that provides results in a 300 page report customized to the potentially allergic patient. Other methods of sensitivity and allergy testing are available from various holistic health practitioners--the medical community is getting proactive in recognizing the mouth as the window to health.
We used to have to cut more of a tooth away to create mechanical retention for keeping the restoration in the tooth, such as silver fillings. Such things as retention grooves and undercuts were cut into healthy tooth structure after decay was removed. Teeth were often cut down to allow for a full coverage crown to be placed over them. Alternatively, now, we can avoid that in most cases when healthy tooth structure is remaining on one or more surfaces of the tooth. With the advancement of bonding science, the need for cutting away healthy tooth just to help a restoration hold, have passed.
Respect for the natural tooth structure extends beyond the enamel and dentin of a tooth into the pulp chamber. The pulp chamber houses the blood and nerve supply inside the tooth. Pulpal cells react to bacteria and irritants in decay extending deeper into a tooth. When the pulp tissues are overcome with infection, a nerve dies. Often swelling and pain are the result of such an advanced infection or other trauma, such as hitting too hard with an imbalanced bite. These teeth can still be saved, if there is enough structure left to restore. A root canal may be the only option at the most severe level of infection. This can be avoided by catching the decay before it gets that deep. Antimicrobial medications can be placed after removal of deep decay, allowing the pulp tissues to recover. The tooth can then be restored more

eeking cosmetic dental treatment is about more than vanity. In a culture that is image-driven, the appearance of your smile can make or break chances for employment, sales and relationships before a single word is spoken.
In order to be a candidate for veneers, your teeth must be reasonably healthy and free from severe decay, and your gums must be free from active periodontal disease. If you clench your teeth or grind them, it’s not a good choice, since veneers are thin and could peel or crack under such constant pressure.
Cleaning and whitening aren’t always enough to produce the beautiful smile that reflects your personal style. Grey-stained, white-spotted, or naturally yellow-tinted teeth often don’t respond well to whitening techniques, and they also don’t fix problems with gaps, chips, fractures or malformations. In these cases, dental veneers might be the solution for you.
The most common types of veneers are ceramic, porcelain, and resin-based composite: Resin veneers are the least expensive and can sometimes be applied in a single office visit, but they do not last as long as the others (an estimated 5-7 years). be polished away during routine cleanings. Porcelain veneers are thinner than ceramic veneers, requiring less tooth-surface preparation. They most closely resemble natural tooth enamel. The doctor performing this service will generally recommend the type of veneer that is most appropriate for each specific patient. With all types of veneers, teeth are prepared by a thorough cleaning. Sometimes no further shaping is required to prepare the tooth. With a moderate preparation, irregular contours and chips are removed to improve alignment. Some cases may require aggressive preparation; this involves removing an extensive amount of the front, sides and incisal edge of the teeth, similar to what is done for a standard crown. For ceramic and porcelain veneers, once the initial preparation is completed, your dentist makes an impression of your teeth and color-matches the shade that will best blend. The impressions are sent to a laboratory where your veneers are manufactured, and you may be fitted with temporary veneers until the second appointment. You might think I immediately bought the book, but I did not. The mere “idea” suggested by the tile, transformed me. I realized that the title of Terry Cole-Whittaker’s book was complementing the same message as my anthem. “Hey world, I am what I am and what you think about me is none of my business.” The title of the book was all that I needed to complete my affirmation for myself. I would visit the bookstore day after day on my lunch hour. I would glance at the title and peak through the pages and find quote after quote that would empower me

The TV program led me to a class called “Mastery in Living I” at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco. That first night of class I was running late. When I arrived, there was one empty seat amongst the 500 people in the room. That seat was next to a woman by the name of Andriette Earl. The rest they say is history. We have been dearest friends for over 32 years. Now, she is Rev. Andriette and is the founding minister of Heart and Soul Center of Light. I’m serving as the founding President of Heart and Soul. Our friendship and my work here at Heart and Soul have been transformative. I am so thankful to have been inspired by that one book. This summer, my story comes full circle. Echinacea Written By Allison Prater
his pretty daisy-like flower, with its delicate pink or purple petals, packs quite a punch. Echinacea Angustifolia and its cousin Echinacea Purpurea are among the most powerful herbs for strengthening the immune system. Amazingly, this herb is surprisingly gentle, stimulating the body’s defense against disease, without toxicity. It has antibiotic and antiviral properties, and has been shown to restore inflamed connective tissue. Native to the great plains of North America, echinacea enjoyed a multitude of uses by the First American tribes in that region. They used the plant to treat snake bites, as well as bites from poisonous insects. The roots were juiced and added to water that was sprinkled on hot coals during purification rituals. It was often used to aid in healing of wounds as well. This is likely due to the caffeic acid glycoside content in the roots, a substance that reacts within the body’s cells to facilitate the wound healing process.

The plants do not need excessive watering and thrive in the heat. It will flower in the summer. In the winter, mulch plants with some straw or evergreens to prevent root damage, and the plant will return the following spring. Every five years or so, dig up the Echinacea roots, divide them, and replant them in fertilized soil for a thriving crop. It is best to wait a few years before harvesting the roots, after the plant has endured several hard frosts. The roots should be cleaned and dried fully before storing. It can then be ground for use in tinctures, teas and capsules. Though Echinacea is not known to be toxic, it is best to consult with a health practitioner who is well versed in herbs before ingesting this plant for the purposes of healing.
Echinacea was adopted for use by early settlers and became popular in folk medicine. It has been used to treat rheumatism, streptococcus infections, bee stings, dyspepsia, tumors, syphilis, gangrene, eczema, hemorrhoids, and many other ailments and wounds. To this day, many herbalists regard echinacea as an effective blood purifier. According to naturopathic physician Michael Tierra, echinacea neutralizes acid conditions in the blood, characteristic of lymphatic stagnation.

Rest is one of the simplest ways to help your body restore itself to health; but constant coughing, or a runny nose can interrupt one’s sleep. This is surely the rationale behind a host of popular cough and cold brands that are designed to help induce sleep. It’s easy to assume that because a bottle has the word “medicine” stamped across its label it must be safe and healthy. Over-thecounter medicine is especially subject to this assumption.

inclusion of High Fructose Corn Syrup and food colorings are strong arguments to forego this product as well. High Fructose corn syrup is linked to a host of health problems, including liver damage, which is certainly not helped by the acetaminophen and alcohol already in this product. Corn syrup also weakens the body’s immune system, which is especially problematic at a time when immunity has already been compromised by illness. The inclusion of artificial dyes is troubling because side effects associated with these ingredients include hyperactivity and irritation of the digestive and respiratory systems. Lab tests also associate these ingredients with increased incidence of cancerous tumors.

While generally considered safe for over the counter use, acute overdoses can cause permanent liver damage, which is worsened by simultaneous consumption of alcohol. A safe dosage for an adult should not exceed 4,000 mg per day. The second active ingredient, Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant or antitussive. This ingredient is also responsible for one of Nyquil’s more notorious side effects: dissociative hallucination. The physical state created by this ingredient is similar to those of recreational drugs, such as ketamine. So, over the counter medicines containing this ingredient are sometimes abused for non-therapeutic reasons. Even when taken at the recommended dose, side effects can include body rashes, itching, nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, closed-eye hallucination and difficulty breathing. When taken at dosages that exceed the recommended dose, side effects can include vomiting, double vision, sweating, fever, hypertension, shallow breathing, diarrhea and urinary retention. It can cause death in small children, and therefore is not appropriate for young ones.
A final thing to consider is that this medicine is not designed to help the body regain wellness at all, but merely to mask uncomfortable symptoms. There are plenty of simple and gentle food-based and herbal remedies that can help the body recover from a cold or cough--and achieve comfortable rest—without the risk of such extreme side effects. If we ascribe to the old adage that our food should be medicine, and our medicine should be food, it makes sense to carefully consider the ingredient list on a bottle of cold medicine. References:

The third and final active ingredient, Doxylamine succinate is a sedating antihistamine. One study found it to be more effective at sedation than the barbiturate phenobarbital. Side effects of taking this drug at the recommended dose include dry mouth, ataxia (lack of coordination of voluntary muscle movements), urinary retention, memory problems, inability to concentrate, hallucinations, psychosis and an increased sensitivity to external stimuli. Symptoms of overdose may include insomnia, night terrors, euphoria, hallucinations, seizures, blackouts, rhabdomyolysis (includes damage to muscles and kidneys) and death.

The inactive ingredient list contains several items that should be red-flagged for being of dubious benefit. Remember earlier in the article, when we established that acetaminophen can cause liver damage if consumed in excess, OR if consumed in combination with alcohol? Curious then that inactive ingredient #2 is none other than alcohol. Though it is probably a very small quantity, this provides further incentive to be extremely careful about overdosing with this product. Some of the other inactive ingredients--if found in a food product--would be reason enough not to ingest that product. Since the goal of taking a product such as Nyquil is supposed to restore wellness, we might want to extend the same rational. The

And it will. Bitter as these temperatures are, winter is doing us gardeners a favor, and not just by giving us a guilt-free break from garden chores.
So I’ll bake another batch of brownies. I’ll put on a pot of coffee, and a sweater. I’m not going to stop complaining about the cold--that would take the fun out of winter. But I’ll be secretly a little bit glad to see those minus signs in the forecast.
For one thing, without winter chill, we wouldn’t be getting much fruit next year. Most deciduous fruit needs anywhere from a hundred to well over a thousand hours spent below forty-five degrees. The exact amount of chill hours needed varies by type of fruit, and even by specific variety of each. Low-chill varieties of peaches, apples and other fruits are available, but we scarcely need them here.

Fruit trees and many other deciduous trees need chill time in order to break down the growth inhibiting hormone, which deciduous trees typically produce in the fall as a response to shortening days. The hormone keeps trees in dormancy during the winter, so they aren’t sucker-punched by a few nice days in the middle of the winter. Once sufficient chill hours are reached, lengthening days and warming temperatures encourage a tree to resume growth. If trees don’t get adequate chill, they may not produce fruit, or the fruit they do produce will be poor in quality. I wish it were the case that the colder the winter, the better the fruit the next summer. We’d have candy apples without dipping them in caramel. The extremely bitter weather we’re enjoying in Northern Nevada won’t actually help fruit production. In fact, we will probably get less fruit than we would if our winter were milder. But these sub-zero temperatures aren’t without a few benefits for us gardeners. Cold weather inhibits some plant disease. Some sources estimate that eighty percent of plant diseases are caused by fungi. Although the precise sequence of conditions favorable to each specific fungal disease varies, some of them are less prevalent after exceptionally cold winters. This winter qualifies. We might face fewer insect pests after a really cold winter as well. The pests commonly lumped together as “cutworms” are actually the larval stage of many different moths. Most cutworms hatch in late summer and spend the winter in a larval state. Really cold winters decimate many species of cutworms. Grasshoppers overwinter as eggs, so their populations aren’t reduced as dramatically by winter cold. However, if our cold winter is followed by a cool, rainy spring, we will have fewer hoppers. Best of all, really cold winters kill off my arch-nemesis, the squash bug. They over-winter as adults, and really cold winters check them nicely. I won’t mind if the hair in my nose freezes stiff, as

ost of us are not consciously aware of the money tapes playing in our heads. So we live our lives in a lot of pain caused by those hidden beliefs about money that don’t serve us. In fact, over 70 percent of Americans report that money is their number one stressor.

Then circle the beliefs about money that are driving your opinions and actions right now. If you have a partner, ask him or her to do the same. Then compare the lists. You may find that the two of you have very different programming around money.

When we become aware of our conditioning, we can change it if it isn’t serving us. The opinions and beliefs of our current friends also have an influence on us. Statistics show that we will not create more income than the average of our five closest friends. So, what can we do right now to ease our money worries and become more enthused about our future?
3. Don’t over-saturate yourself with bad news about the economy or politics. Taking
in disturbing news day after day can lead to a growing sense of pessimism. Turn off the “talking heads” on TV. When you turn it on a month later, they’ll be saying the same things. Have any of them ever given you an idea or a solution to your challenges? Nope. They’re paid millions to further the argument industry, to keep you in front of the channels that support your political philosophy. In other words, you’re watching the talking heads and the sponsoring corporations make big bucks, while being subjected to the

hypnotic commercials and feeling powerless. Focusing on the negative creates massive stress. Doctors now realize that 95 percent of all ailments are caused by anxiety and stress. Our bodies cannot withstand the constant chemical barrage of stress hormones without beginning to break down. Noticed any new aches and pains recently? Your body is trying to tell you something.
4. Don’t punish yourself with blame or shame. Having financial difficulties isn’t failure. Sometimes the circumstances are beyond your control. Freeing yourself from these disapproving feelings enhances your perception and intuition, allowing you to think more clearly. Despite a fear that things may always be this way, your current condition is not permanent and you are not a victim. Change is constant; and that includes your finances.
5. Shift your focus. Stop and remember that the basic
conveniences you may take for granted are not available to 90 percent of the world. It may sound trite, but when we stop to think about those who are much less fortunate, it puts our financial situations into a larger perspective. Also, it helps to remember all the things you’re grateful for. It’s hard to feel anxious or scared while focusing on feelings of gratitude. Think about someone you appreciate and then take a moment to feel that in your heart. If you choose, tell him or her. You’ll be surprised by the new energy you bring back to solving money challenges by cultivating gratitude and expressing appreciation.
6. Learn some techniques to relieve stress immediately--something you can do at any time, any place. There are some brilliant grounding processes available now which will put you back into a state of centeredness and clarity. Don‘t let worry or stress about finances drag you down. couple months ago, I took an amazing child birth preparation class, called Pelvic Alignment, facilitated by local Reno yoga instructor Mandy Colbert. I was blown away by what I learned, and have had a very comfortable pregnancy— thanks, in part, to many of the principles and stretches I learned in this class. I recently sat down with Mandy to discuss the subject in greater detail.
baby must move down in a spiraling motion through the bones of the mother’s pelvis. This is best achieved when the baby is head down, and in an occiput anterior (OA) position, meaning that the back of the skull is facing the front of the body. When the baby is in the occiput posterior (OP) position (meaning the back of the skull is facing the spine) it is harder for the baby to move through the pelvis. This positioning contributes to uncomfortable back labor, and longer labors, because the baby is trying to turn itself into an ideal position, instead of moving down. When the baby is positioned this way, the mother is more likely to go past her due date, or to require medical interventions, often attributed to a “failure to progress.”
Mandy Colbert completed her 200 hr Yoga Teacher certification through Yoga Loka in 2004. In 2006, she completed a prenatal yoga teacher certification with Britt Fohrman in San Francisco. She was a certified Hypnobirthing instructor for four years as well. And of course, as a mother of four, she has plenty of personal experience to draw upon.
When she was pregnant with her fourth child, Mandy realized that many of the yoga poses she was teaching to other mamas were helping her to feel good in her pregnant body. This further confirmed to her that the principles of pelvic alignment help mother and baby to be in harmony. According to Mandy, “When mom and baby are working in harmony there are less aches in the mother’s body.”
While teaching Hypnobirthing, Mandy noticed that many of the mothers she was working with were going past their due dates, or needing to be induced to go into labor. As she was investigating how this could be, she came across two books, “Let Birth be Born Again,” by Jean Sutton and “Active Birth,” by Janet Balaskas. These books gave her a new perspective on the role that posture and alignment play when it comes to birth. She began teaching pelvic alignment in addition to hypnobirthing in 2008.
The goal of her pelvic alignment class is to give mothers-to-be a better understanding of how good posture can help to improve their experience throughout their pregnancy and birth. “Women need to feel powerful and wonderful through the process that helps prepare them for motherhood,” says Mandy. One of the biggest recommendations Mandy gives her students is to stay off the couch. She recommends sitting on an inflatable exercise ball instead. Sitting on stools and hard chairs are preferable to soft couches. When sitting, it is best to position oneself on the front of the sit bones, so there is a slight curve in the low back. The knees should be slightly lower than the pelvis and the belly should spill forward, giving baby plenty of space. The class also covers stretches and exercises that help prepare you for birth and the strong sensations of labor. “Stretching creates a mind-body connection that helps you listen to your body during labor,” she explains. Through this work, Mandy hopes to give mothers a positive perspective on pregnancy and birth, and to help undo the stereotype that either need be a miserable experience. “Labor isn’t scary. It’s powerful, amazing and exciting!”
Our modern lifestyle, with all its convenience, has come at a high price. For generations, women’s lives were much more active than they are today. We tended gardens, washed clothes by hand, scrubbed floors on our hand and knees, and thus spent a lot less time sitting. Big, soft couches were not a common fixture in our homes; and even if we had one, we didn’t spend much time sitting in it. Today, thanks in part to the amount of technology we possess, we spend a lot more time sitting in our couches and sitting in cars. During pregnancy, excessive sitting, especially sitting with poor alignment is problematic for several reasons. The baby moves with the spine, so when the spine is rounded, like when we slouch, the baby’s face is pressed into it. This is uncomfortable for the baby, and so it will turn its face toward the abdomen. During labor, the

BASIC CREAM SAUCE: 1 C milk ½ C cream ¼ t sea salt ¼ white pepper 2 T corn starch 2 T diced mushrooms and/or celery, sautéed

4 boneless chicken breasts, cut in small chunks
3 C your favourite cooked pasta noodles

1. Steam beet greens and drain thoroughly. 2. Boil perogies or noodles, drain and rinse noodles with cold water to prevent clumping. Sautee chicken chunks in oil in heavy skillet. 3. Add herbs after about 5 minutes. Cook until no pink in chicken. 4. Arrange perogies or noodles in center of large, buttered baking casserole. 5. Top with chicken chunks. Surround with drained beet greens, dot with greens with butter. 6. Pour cream or cheese sauce over chicken chunks and noodles. 7. Sprinkle bread crumbs on top if desired. 8. Bake @350 F for about 45 to 50 minutes in covered casserole.

For the Cream Sauce, put cold cream and milk into medium sauce pan. 6. Add salt & pepper. Whisk in corn starch. Cook on very low heat, whisking continuously. 7. As mixture thickens, add sautéed mushrooms or celery, or both. 8. Pour sauce over baked tuna roll and serve while hot.

1. Rinse liver and remove membrane if not already removed. Rinse liver again in very cold water. Slice about ½” thick.
1. Sift together dry ingredients, stir in milk, melted butter and eggs with quick, light strokes until just combined.
2. Dredge in seasoned flour and fry in oil turning once after about 5 minutes, then again after another 5 minutes. Liver should have a light pink line in center. Do not overcook – you don’t want “boot-leather”!
2. Generously grease muffins tins with any fat except butter. 3. Set into preheated 400F oven until sizzling hot.
3. While liver is cooking boil prawns in small amount of salted water for about 5 to 7 minutes.
4. Remove pan from oven and spoon in batter until each cup is about ¾ full.
