PUBLISHERLETTER

COVERSTORY The Four Leaf Clover

Dear Readers, Interpersonally speaking how well do you listen? When someone is talking to you, are you listening to what they are saying or are you thinking about how you want to respond? Or are you completely tuning them out? Are you a patient respectful listener, one who honors the speaker’s floor? Or, do you jump in with your thoughts before the other person finishes their sentence? If listening is at least 75% of the conversation equation, then it should signify that it is the most important element in the communication model. Listening to your intuition and internal dialogue is equally as important, as listening to others, because it affects our interpersonal relationships. Being present and consciously listening prepares us to effectively respond to someone else’s needs as well as to our own needs. Positive outcomes are hard to come by if we assume that we know what someone is thinking and feeling, and the same is true when we ignore our internal dialogue and our intuition. Reflecting on the part we each play in the communication model encourages a healthier mental outlook in our relationships and life in general. As Socrates so eloquently put it, “A life unexamined is not worth living.” Although that may sound harsh, simply put it means: look at the life you are leading. Is there value? Do you hold yourself accountable? Are you a participant in your life? Do you let life happen to you? Do you have a plan for your life? There is a saying that goes, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity,” which brings me to the March issue and our cover, the four leaf clover. It is our hope that you find a four leaf clover of wisdom in reading this month’s edition. Best in Health and Happiness,

T

Written by Marie Harger

he four leaf clover is a universally accepted symbol of good luck with its origin dating back to antiquity. According to legend, Eve carried a four leaf clover from the Garden of Eden. Each leaf of the clover represents something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love, and the fourth for luck. According to N.L. Taylor, the White clover was held in high esteem by the early Celtic people of Wales as a charm against evil spirits. The Druids considered the 4 leaf clover a sign of luck. In 1620, Sir John Melton wrote: “If a man walking in the fields find any four-leaved grass, he shall in a small while after find some good thing.” According to tradition, such leaves bring especially good luck if found accidentally. It is debated whether the fourth leaflet is caused genetically or environmentally. Its relative rarity suggests a possible recessive gene, mutation or an environmental error. The four-leaf clover is often confused with the shamrock, the three-leafed clover. While the four-leaf clover is good luck, the shamrock is mainly an Irish Christian symbol of the Holy Trinity with the meaning - one leaf for the Father, one for the Son and one for the Holy Spirit. It is also a common way to represent Saint Patrick’s Day. The shamrock was also traditionally used for its medical properties and was a popular motif in Victorian times. In Irish tradition, the Shamrock or 3-leaf Clover has great value and when a Shamrock is found with the fourth leaf, it represents God’s Grace. The mystique of the four leaf clover continues today, since finding a real four leaf clover is still a rare occurrence and omen of good luck.

n the December issue of Healthy Beginnings magazine we featured a supplement called Curamin. The response to this product was so significant that we decided to break it down to see how it works. It is claimed that all the ingredients are natural having a powerful impact on acute or chronic pain from arthritis, injuries, soreness, inflammation or other maladies. Many health concerns today are related to inflammation. When you relieve inflammation, you relieve pain. From research we have learned that of anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen over time have side effects, such as causing irritation and sometimes damage to the stomach, intestinal tract, kidneys and liver. The all-natural combination of Curamin ingredients are said to relieve pain without any side effects. Common herbs such as turmeric and boswellia have been known for years to relieve pain and inflammation. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is a better anti-inflammatory than cortisone, one of the most powerful steroids today. Researchers have isolated a factor known as a curcuminoid, which is approximately 100 times as potent as regular curcumin in reducing inflammation. Rather than relying on codeine or vicodin to numb pain, this Curamin formula, combines its curcuminoid content with the natural feel-good painkiller DLPA. DLPA has been scientifically documented to foster the buildup of feel-good endorphins in the brain, acting on the opioid receptors. Also Nattokinase clears inflammation in the bloodstream to speed nutrients to where they’re needed.

Ingredients: Curcumin: is the principal curcuminoid of the popular Indian spice turmeric, which is a member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It is the active ingredient in turmeric. Curcuminoids: tiny sub-particles that make up curcumin. Also, derivative of a curcumin with different chemical groups that have been formed to increase solubility of curcumins and make them suitable for drug formulation. Nattokinase: an enzyme extracted and purified from a Japanese food called Natto. Natto is a cheese-like food made from fermented soybeans There are hundreds of studies that demonstrate the antiinflammatory powers of the herb curcumin. In one doubleblind study, curcumin matched cortisone as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory. Best-selling author Jean Carper reports in Food—Your Miracle Medicine that its active ingredient “is an anti-inflammatory agent on a par with cortisone, and has reduced inflammation in animals and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in humans.” If you are concerned about pharmaceutical drugs with all their side effects, and if you are tired of everyday pain, then the above combination of all natural ingredients may be the answer you are looking for. When in doubt always consult your physician or health care practitioner. References: 1. Carr, Anna; Cassidy, Catherine; Ellen Cohen. Rodales’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of Herbs. Test Your Brain Muscles TAKE A SPRING QUIZ

Spring equinox is considered a time of new beginnings and is symbolic of the changing of seasons. For those of us who live north of the equator we welcome spring, people south of the equator are actually layering up for the cooler temperatures of fall and then winter. This year the equinox happens on March 20th. It is when the noonday sun is directly over the equator and will continue to rise higher in our sky through the summer solstice in late June. This month the Brain health section offers you a quick quiz to exercise and stimulate the Brain. Just as the Sun is waking up nature and we begin to see evidence of growth around us, it is important to continue to grow and evolve our mental capacities for better health.

PROVIDERPROFILE

Deanna Mandichak, PT, Health Coach

Interviewed by Marie Harger

M

any of us have heard Albert Einstein’s definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If a change in your life is needed either because you want it for yourself or your doctor has recommended it, how can you move forward to a positive end and do that something different? Even if the change is wanted the motivation, resources, and support are often lacking. Deanna Mandichak is a health coach and Physical Therapist whose job is to coach, consult, counsel, encourage, motivate, problem solve, assist in removing obstacles and support her client in moving towards their personal goals to reach optimum health. Deanna grew up in southern California and went to Cal State Long Beach, majoring in Physical Therapy. At 25 she married and moved to Reno to have a family and enjoy the easy access to skiing. Today her family life is busy with three children all under 10. With an interest in science, Deanna knew she wanted to help people live better and be healthier. She was fascinated by the human body, which is what drew her to the field of Physical Therapy. She has worked for 17 years in outpatient orthopedics and women’s health. Through this work she began to wonder why some people would get certain illnesses or suffer pain and have difficulty recovering and others would progress in therapy and heal. She was most interested in prevention, and felt discouraged by western medicine’s approach to health. Deanna was further motivated by the loss of her mother and aunt to cancer, and how their medical doctors could not help them. She undertook some self-training and education on prevention, and achieving health with the guidance of a naturopathic doctor. During her research, she learned about “Life and Health coaching” as a new and growing arena to help people take control of their own health and achieve their goals. It also allowed her to address and alleviate some of her own health issues. She enrolled in a Coaching school and became certified. Currently, she uses these skills with physical therapy patients and individual coaching clients. When working with Deanna there is an initial 60 to 90 minute consultation. She often works with doctors who have diagnosed a patient with a disease or chronic illness, to help coach them in making lifestyle changes needed to maintain or improve their health and reach the goals the doctors have prescribed. She also collaborates with professionals in other fields or practices that involves a client in need. In the consultation process she interviews the clients and draws out important answers to limitations. Services of a coach include delving into issues, discovery of obstacles, problem solving to reach goals. After many available packages, Deanna sets up the guidelines for help, with a face to face meeting once a month, as well as March 2010

twice a week contact, either by phone or email and a weekly newsletter. What makes Health Coaching unique is it takes health care to a new level by approaching it from a different angle to give the power back to the individual, patient and client and resolve issues that prevent them from optimum health. This process is very hands-on, and through various exercises one stays on track, via written goals and dates to reach them. The benefits are many. You will develop self confidence, lose weight, get physically fit, receive relief from ailments, feel empowered, reduce stress, eliminate bad habits, and take control of your health and life, all with the guidance of a Health coach. Having your health means being able to manage pain, stress, weight, illness and to boost immunity and have overall well-being. The ultimate goal is you aspire to have the life your deserve. The greatest satisfaction for Deanna comes with seeing her clients’ success. Through this process, even when it gets tough, clients tend to respond with enthusiasm because they know deep down they need to make these changes. She is 100% committed to her clients by designing a program that works, and by making adjustments when necessary. She is their coach, there to help them “Self-manage” their condition and to motivate changes to improve health for the long-haul. Stop insanity, don’t continue down the same old path with the same old defeating patterns. Do something different and make that needed change, hire a Health coach and reach your health goals today. SUPPLEMENTS101 The older you get the more inefficient the digestive system becomes, especially due to the standard American diet. The lining of the stomach gradually loses its ability to produce hydrochloric acid which releases vitamin B 12 from your food. The use of antacids or anti ulcer drugs will also lower your stomach acid secretion and further decrease your ability to absorb vitamin B12. Infection with Helicobactor pylori, a common contributor to stomach ulcers, can also result in vitamin B12 deficiency. The main cause of vitamin B12 deficiency is a term researchers call food-cobalamin malabsorption syndrome or pernicious anemia. Cobalamin is the scientific term for vitamin B12. When the stomach lining losing its ability to produce intrinsic factor, which is a protein that binds to vitamin B12 and allows for absorption into the small intestine, supplementation of vitamin B-12 may still be necessary. Even if your diet is rich in B-12, such as meat, poultry, liver, brewer’s yeast, clams, eggs, herring, mackerel, dairy products, or seafood you may still be deficient. Low energy is one of our country’s biggest health complaints, due to refined foods which deplete nutrients, containssugar, chemicals, food colorings and preservatives. Add harmful effects of caffeine, pollution, conventional therapies, and stress, it becomes a recipe for energy drain.

Vitamin B12

T

he Energy Vitamin and then some Vitamin B12 is known as the “energy vitamin,” and it is essential for many critical functions in your body, including energy production, supporting your immune system, and helping to regulate the formation of red blood cells. Recent studies from the US Framingham trial show that one in four adults in the US are deficient in this vitally important nutrient and nearly half of the population has suboptimal blood levels. Vitamin B12 is present only in animal sources of food--which is one of the reasons vegetarians or vegans suffer from deficiency resulting in less than optimal nervous system function, a tendency toward nervousness, and even less-than-optimal eye health. India is a primarily vegetarian based culture and current studies there show about 80% of the adults are deficient in vitamin B12. In addition, the older you get the more likely you are to have a vitamin B12 deficiency. The two main contributors to B12 deficiency are inadequate diet and an inability to absorb it. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

The benefits of Vitamin B-12 are many. It helps folic acid regulate the formation of red blood cells, and the body to use iron. It is needed for proper digestion, food absorption, carbohydrate and fat metabolism. It assists the nervous system - the nerves function and communicate in an optimal manner as well as promote normal nerve growth and development by maintaining the fatty sheaths, which play a vital role in nerve protection. This micronutrient is critical to circulation and adrenal hormone production - plus, it boosts immunity. Vitamin B-12 supports a healthy mood and feelings of wellbeing. It also provides excellent support for memory, mental clarity, and concentration. Plant sources have virtually no vitamin B-12. Vegetarians should take this essential micronutrient to ensure an adequate supply of it, because it is found almost exclusively in animal tissues. Few plant foods are sources of B-12. They have B-12 analogs - not the form that provides the benefits of B12. B-12 can be taken during the day for sleeping difficulties. B-12 plays a vital role in melatonin production. Melatonin has been called “the sleep hormone” because it is responsible for a good night’s sleep. As you age, it becomes more difficult to get a good night’s sleep because the body becomes less efficient at making this hormone. The late Victor Herbert, a renowned B-12 researcher, said that many multivitamin products on the market today contain dangerous B-12 analogs. In other words, analogs get created when crystalline B-12 interacts with other nutrients in multivitamin products, such as vitamin C, iron and copper 10

increasing the body’s need for B-12. Most multi-vitamins sold today are a complete waste of money when it comes to their B-12 quality and performance. Before supplementation of Vitamin B12, consult with an expert, due to the complexity of its chemical structure. References: 1. www.mercola.com 2.Grogan, Peyton at the vitamin connection 3. Colon Hydrotherapy It’s Not As Scary As You Think

Written by Shelby Molchan, Certified Colon Hydrotherapist

M

any people agree that bowel cleansing is a good idea, yet they may have many pre-conceived notions about receiving Colon Hydrotherapy. One misconception is that Colon Hydrotherapy is painful, smelly and just plain gross. And although the procedure can be uncomfortable at times during the treatment, when done in a relaxing, professional setting it can actually be relieving and invigorating.

is inserted into the rectum. Water and waste hoses are attached to the speculum and also to the closed system machine. This machine includes a pressure gage used to monitor the pressure in the colon during the fills. There also is an illuminated observation tube in the machine that allows the client to observe the matter that is removed from the colon. The Colon Hydrotherapist is trained to identify and discuss the waste matter and suggestions are made according to what is seen in the tube.

Here is an overview of what a thorough, professional Colon Hydrotherapy session is like:

Abdominal manipulation is used throughout the treatment to identify and break up any impacted matter in the colon. A low pressure fill is administered under close observation of the pressure valve and by communication with the client about how and what they are feeling. When the bowel is sufficiently hydrated the pressure valve is released, water begins to circulate and waste matter is removed from the bowel. Various forms of body work can be used to stimulate the colon and encourage the bowel to release its contents. Essential oils may be used to relax the client and relieve detoxification symptoms. Coffee may also be implanted with the treatment to aid in liver detoxi-

Following a consultation in which the client’s health issues and wellness goals are discussed and after determining that there are no contraindications to performing the procedure, the client is asked to use the restroom and disrobe from the waist down. The client lies face up on the treatment table covered with a towel. Attention to the client’s personal dignity is given at all times. fication, stimulate peristalsis (contractions) of the colon, and for pain relief. Probiotics can also be implanted at the end of the treatment to re-establish beneficial flora in the gut. During the treatment, consisting of a series of fills and releases, the client’s health issues are addressed in relation to diet, eating and bowel habits and recommendations based on what is seen are made regarding the use of fiber and digestive products, herbs and or supplements as well as tips on improving digestion and eating habits. A personal program is established according to the client’s desires, which can include products and cleanses in conjunction with Colon Hydrotherapy sessions to address toxicity issues, boost absorption, digestion and elimination, aid in weight loss and improve general health. Most clients tolerate the procedure very well and spend 20-30 minutes on the table. At the end of that time the client is instructed on how to finish the treatment in the restroom and the speculum is removed. The client enters the restroom for the final release. Upon finishing in the restroom, handouts are given pertaining to issues discussed during the treatment along with products available for purchase. The therapist works with the client at each session, monitoring progress, providing tips and encouragement to assist him or her in reaching their wellness goals. Because of the importance of hydration in the bowel it is recommended that the treatments be done close together. “I just want to take a moment to thank you all for publishing such an important and informative read! I look forward to the delivery of HB to my yoga studio each month. It never fails that no matter how much I think I know about alternative healing and nutrition, I always learn something new! For example, the toxic ‘anti-aging’ sunscreen I’ve been putting on my face...Full of all the wrong ingredients! And I discovered Dr. Gerber, a doctor in HB who practices the way ‘medicine’ should be practiced, preventively! You magazine helps me create and maintain a greater awareness of all the noxious ingredients to which we are exposed on a daily basis, all under the guise of being ‘healthy’! I’m a nurse and work in an environment that helps me appreciate my health even more. I’ve turned a few of my coworkers onto your publication-and they too, are now living greener, healthier lives. I also save my past issues for my mom, who lives in Southern California and wishes she had something like HB down there! Well done, Healthy Beginnings! Keep them coming!”

or more than fifty years heat pictures have been used in the military, law enforcement and in health care. The evolution of breast thermography imaging has been growing especially rapid in the last twenty years with French physicians leading the way. Patterns of heat given off by the breast can predict disease far in advance of the usual mammography without the pitfalls of radiation exposure to the breasts and the painful compression of the breast during the examination both of which have been a deterrent to many thoughtful women. In the last several months Federal guidelines have been issued for women to begin routine mammography at age 50 instead of 40 because it produced many false positives that resulted in needless breast biopsies, and invasive therapies, which also traumatized the patients. The more important issue is the impressive radiation dose. Each picture taken in a mammogram has at least 35 times the radiation of a chest x ray. The beauty of thermography is in spotting abnormalities in blood flow. The most common cause of abnormality is an excess of estrogen and its breakdown products that have been directly linked to fibrocystic (lumpy) breasts and breast cancer. Abnormal blood vessels can also be seen that are feeding a tumor. A good test can also be helpful for what it doesn’t find. For example a 37-year-old mother of three came into the clinic with a painful egg sized lump in her right breast. The lymph nodes in her armpit were also painful and enlarged. She volunteered that she had been off her diet, eating lots of sugar and fast foods and that she had not been taking supplements or her topical, bioidentical progesterone cream for some time, and was under terrific stress. Her OBGyn Physician explained to her that a needle biopsy would be the standard course to follow to determine if the lump was cancerous. She promptly did the breast thermography and the results came back as a class one, normal. Since she was concerned that a biopsy might spread a cancer she decided to follow a conservative approach, resuming her progesterone, supplements, and doing lymphatic drainage. Within 10 days the lump and painful nodes had all disappeared. In this case thermography was very helpful to head off unnecessary, invasive procedures such as a needle biopsy. This approach to breast health is very appealing because when alerted to abnormal changes in breast thermography

Squeeze Before you Sneeze

Bladder control: Reclaim Your Natural Ability Written by Jane O’Brien, PT, MSPT

W

hen it comes to bladder control, embrace what comes naturally. Forget the prescriptions and surgeries. Simple behavior changes can create huge results. Here are 5 ways in which you can regain control of the frequency, urgency and leakage:

drinking early in the evening. If you must take medicine in the evening, do so with your dinner to allow your body the time needed to process the liquid and send the waste in to the bladder. Empty your bladder just before you climb into bed.

•Retrain your bladder

Perform a pelvic floor muscle contraction, aka Kegel, before you sneeze, laugh or cough. Tightening the muscles of the pelvic floor will help you to avoid leakage of urine during a forceful contraction, which occurs with the previously mentioned activities. If you are unsure how to perform a Kegel, imagine that you are trying to hold back gas from escaping or trying to stop urine from flowing. The muscles you tightened for this task are your pelvic floor muscles (Kegel muscles).

Our parents taught us to go to the bathroom before we left the house to avoid the need to urinate while we were travelling in a car. In other words, to go while we have the opportunity “just in case” the sense of urgency arises and we are unable to answer nature’s call. I call this a “JIC” pee. Our bladders have the capacity to hold 8-12 oz of urine. If we empty the bladder before we reach maximum capacity, we have retrained the detrusor muscle (the bladder muscle) to hold less and to alert us sooner. Try waiting at least 2 hours between voids. Don’t practice “JIC” pees.

•Avoid drinking 2 hours before bedtime

Imbibing beverages of any sort within 2 hours of bedtime will certainly lead to the need to arise and void during what is intended to be a time for us to rejuvenate and sleep. Try to stop For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

•Squeeze before you Sneeze

•Relax

Urination requires that one relax during the activity. In other words, one should not force the stream. Sit on the toilet, if you are a woman. Men should stand and allow their muscles to soften, not strain. Many people in jobs where their potty breaks are few and far between with an extremely short time to be away from their duties, such as teachers and nurses, are in the habit 16

March 2010

of trying to urinate quickly. They push the urine out in an attempt to get done quickly. This forcefulness can cause pelvic organ prolapse, where the bladder and even the uterus can descend in the pelvic cavity and fall through the vagina. Another consequence can be excess stretch of the pelvic floor muscles, which leads to weakness. When the muscles are not strong enough to support the organs, leakage can occur. So, relax when you void. It is, however, often necessary to push when you defecate. Just don’t strain.

•Exercise

If we don’t use it we lose it. Muscles of the pelvic floor are no different than other muscles in the body. To keep the muscles of the pelvic floor strong, one must practice daily. Contract the muscles 3-5 seconds, for 10 repetitions. Try to work up to 10 second holds, 30 times per day. The exercises are easiest when performed while lying on your back. Challenge yourself by sitting reclined to 45 degrees. Advance to sitting upright, then progress into standing. These exercises can be performed while settling down to sleep, while brushing your teeth or while driving to work. Check to see if you are properly performing the exercise by holding a mirror between your legs. Women will see the area between the legs, called the perineum lift with a squeeze. Men will see the penis rise a bit. If you have any doubts, ask your women’s health

physical Therapist or the gynecologist to check your status. The field of women’s health Physical Therapy has increased awareness of issues, such as bladder control, painful intercourse, pelvic pain tailbone pain, post breast surgery rehabilitation and high risk pregnancy. Physical Therapists in the practice of women’s health have completed special training to enable them to evaluate, diagnose, and treat these sensitive issues. Despite the name, men benefit from women’s health therapy as well. After prostate surgery, men should seek the services of a women’s health therapist to assist with bladder control and erectile difficulties. Most importantly, Women’s health physical Therapy is a natural method of regaining control and function of the pelvic floor without surgery or medicine. Are You Called To Be a Psychotherapist? Following Your Intuition Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

P

eople experience the calling to become psychotherapists in a variety of ways. This article presents some intriguing examples and then looks at some important components in the professional development of psychotherapists. Some people know at a young age that they want to become a psychotherapist. Perhaps they observed someone conducting therapy and found it fascinating and inspiring. Maybe they were attracted by the idea of helping people or were just naturally curious about the psyche, why people behave the way they do, the meaning of dreams, etc. Sometimes people experience the calling to become a psychotherapist during the course of their own therapy for a psychological issue such as depression or anxiety. In every society certain individuals are called to see beneath and beyond the surface of ordinary life and conventional perspectives. Their illness, which may be experienced as a wounding, serves as an initiation to another world–the world of the unconscious psyche, of symbols, transformation, and healing. Their psychic and emotional wounds are their teachers, inviting them

to become healers. This is the significance of the story of the “wounded healer.” To paraphrase Jung, it is the healer’s own hurt that gives the measure of his power to heal. Sometimes people receive their calling partly through their dreams. A college student dreamed of a woman’s name with which he was unfamiliar. The dream indicated that she worked at a nearby university. Curious, he contacted her and found that she was a professor in the Counseling Department. Although his bachelors degree was in no way connected to psychology, he took the dream as a sign and decided to enroll in this university’s counseling program. His leap of faith turned out to be a wise decision, guiding him to a fulfilling career as a psychologist. Another dream comes from a woman who had a life-long interest in psychology and spirituality but never pursued any formal education or career in psychotherapy until she had the following dream on her 71st birthday. “I am a priestess in a temple. I am wearing a long, flowing garment, scarlet in color. I also have a headdress. People bring me important objects and artifacts, and I help them to

18

understand what they are and what they mean. Strangely, I am able to walk on the interior walls of the temple room in apparent defiance of gravity. About 15 feet above the floor, I can clearly see all of the people in the room.” To be a priest is, symbolically, to be a messenger between God and man. From a depth psychology perspective it represents someone who helps people develop a living relationship with their unconscious, the soul, and their spiritual core. The artifacts which people bring her are precious aspects of their psyche with which they seek relationship. Her ability to walk on the walls and see people from above may symbolize that she is able to perceive people from a spiritual perspective while still remaining connected to the earth. Certain people find their calling through the sometimes strange proddings of their intuition. A 19 year-old soldier felt an urge to go to the army base library. He did so, eventually following his inner voice to a particular bookshelf. Reaching up he removed a book by an author he had never heard of. The book was a collection of Carl Jung’s writing on dreams. Intrigued, he started reading

March 2010

but could not make heads or tails out of Jung’s interpretations. Nonetheless, the experience stuck with him. After his tour of duty he pursued an education in psychology, eventually becoming a Jungian psychologist. Although the birth of psychotherapy is often associated with Sigmund Freud’s development of psychoanalysis, its deepest roots may actually be traced many centuries earlier to what the Christian church called “the cure of souls.” The cure (or care) of souls describes the process through which a pastor would attend to the soul needs of his parishioners for the sake of healing, development, and relationship with God. This earlier origin is reflected in the etymology of the word psychotherapy for “psyche” is the Greek word for soul. Over the years, psychology has progressively distanced itself from the cure of souls perspective. As the field has become increasingly medical and mechanistic in its outlook, the term soul is rarely used. In mainstream psychology, the psyche is increasingly associated with the mind, the brain, neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, and genetics. Coincident with this ideological shift has been the gradual transition of psychotherapists from the role of healer to that of a trained technician implementing “evidence-based” (usually cognitive and behavioral) treatments. If you have thoughts of becoming a psychotherapist, or if you are in the process of becoming one, it is important to be aware of the worldview that increasingly dominates the fields of psychology and social work. Ironically, your formal education may pose the greatest threat to your love and enthusiasm for the practice of psychotherapy. Although there are exceptions, over the past twenty years most graduate psychology and social work programs have become infatuated with the medical model of the psyche and research. Persons drawn to the field with a sensitivity for the depth and wonder of the psyche, who sense the reality of the unconscious, or who seek to become healers at the most human, heart and soul-based level should approach their formal education with a discerning spirit. Perhaps especially at the bachelors and masters level, the education of aspir-

ing psychotherapists should provide an objective and broad-based examination of the major personality theories of the past 120 years. Examining or emphasizing only more recent, establishmentapproved approaches yields not only a limited awareness of psychological theory and history, but, more importantly, a very truncated and distorted picture of the psyche, therapy, and what it means to be a human being. Refined focus on a particular area of psychotherapy may occur at the doctoral level, when the student is better position to make a more educated, objective decision. Perhaps the most important component of your development as a psychotherapist involves something that will not even be required of you in school or by a state licensing board. This is your investment in your own psychotherapy. Although several years of individual psychotherapy in the modality of one’s choice was once required by training programs, it is rarely required now. This is a genuine loss to the psychotherapy profession, the practitioner, and the consumer. The notion that a student can complete a psychology or social work training program and, without several years of his or her own psychotherapy, reliably provide quality care of substantial depth is highly doubtful. Every profession utilizes its own tools and instruments to accomplish its work. In psychotherapy your mind and heart are the tools and instruments of your trade. Not only is it important to experience in depth the process you will ask of your clients, your therapy will help you to become more conscious of the issues and attitudes within yourself that inevitably impact your work with clients. The better that you know yourself, the greater the insight, understanding, and clarity of perception you bring to bear upon your relationships. As Jung observed, “Every psychotherapist not only has his own method–he himself is that method.” Undoubtedly the most valuable thing that a therapist can offer a client is an inner attitude of genuine love, caring, honesty, and integrity. The various interventions and techniques you use–no matter how skillfully implemented–are

March 2010

19

unlikely to sustain a significant therapeutic relationship if these core attributes are not present. Say what we may to our clients, it is what we live that they intuit and ultimately respond to. Do yourself and your clients a favor, become a quality instrument of change. References: 1. Bergin, Allen E. Psychotherapy and Religious Values. The Healthy Adventurer I began my healthy adventures in 1972 traveling all over the world by bike. Today I am 69 years old and still going strong. It is never to late to live a healthy active life and be your own healthy adventurer.

Written by Ariana Purcell, 12 years old

arch is the beginning of spring! I love this month because if you are into sports, you usually get to practice outside! I am on the basketball team for my school and we will go outside to play and practice for games very soon. If you aren’t in any sports or activities now, try something new to get your body moving, like: basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, baseball, softball or football. There are other activities that you can do outside, like: hiking, rock climbing, boogie boarding, surfing and skateboarding.

Australia - March 2010 Suddenly, there he was, a mighty bull. This kind, living in the wild, is called “buffalo” though they do not resemble our North American bison. Oh yes, pigs, often of enormous size, cattle, horses and even donkeys live wild in this huge park. I had come to a stop. We stared at each other. We were only 50 m apart. If the beast should decide to attack, I thought, I could easily get away on my bike. I did not come to find out, for the bull snorted, turned quickly and ran off into the bush.

Another reason I love March: It’s a great month to start clubs! A friend of mine is going to start a “Go Green” club. We will get together once a week and talk about ways to make our school more green or eco-friendly! She even had a lot of people sign a petition for the club. My teacher said we could have meetings in his room and that he would watch us after school on days when we had meetings! I can’t wait to sign up!

It was still raining when I biked into a rest area just before it turned dark. This one had camping sites. When I set out to pitch my little tent surrounded by large RVs, two ladies came over to invite me to camp next to their caravan. “You must meet my husband,” said one of them, “he is a crazy push biker like you.” He was. He invited me for a beer and shared some of his biking adventures when there was a lull in the rain. Returning downpour parted us again, driving me into my tent for an early night.

After all of your hard work with sports and activities this month, make sure to take time to relax too. I usually take showers, but sometimes, I like to take baths. It helps me calm down after a crazy day. I like to add bath salts too, especially lavender or mint. Project: Bath salts What you need: • Bottle or jar that has a lid • Epsom salts • Essential oil (fragrance of your choice) Instructions: Combine Epsom salts (use enough to fit in your jar) and the essential oil; mix well. Empty the bowl of salts onto a piece of wax paper and let dry for a few hours. Once the salts have dried, fill the jar and enjoy!

When I was back riding by 4:00 am the rain had stopped. It was still pitch dark. Something bounced against my leg. Had I lost something? I turned around. In the beam of my flashlight I saw a giant toad. To be continued….

Needles That Heal

Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture Written by David Edge, OMD

A

cupuncture seems to be a popular topic these days. Hollywood stars praising its benefits, Time & Life magazine featuring articles about it, even Veterinarians claiming amazing results treating their furry little friends (no placebo effect there!). As acupuncture becomes more popular here in the West many people are becoming curious about this “mysterious” form of healing from the East. This article briefly addresses some of the most frequent questions that a prospective new patient might have.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the “eight branches” of what is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The other seven branches consist of herbal medicine, diet, Tui Na (massage), qigong (breathwork), tai qi (martial arts), astrology, and feng shui (art of placement). Acupuncture itself is the practice of inserting extremely thin needles into specific points on the body known as acupoints. These acupoints are generally located along energetic pathways on the body known as meridians.

What are meridians?

Meridians are the pathways through which Qi (or energy, for the sake of simplicity) is carried throughout the body. They cover the body from head to toe, front to back, and connect with all the organ systems of the body. This creates a web of pathways that interconnect every aspect of the body. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

What is Qi?

Qi, (pronounced chee) in its most basic description, is the energy flowing through the meridian system. From a more holistic point of view it can be thought of as the underlying omnipresent force permeating and animating the universe. The goal of the acupuncturist is to promote the smooth uninhibited flow of Qi through the meridian system. One interesting description of Qi is that it is energy on the verge of becoming matter and matter on the verge of becoming energy. This is a succinct verbal description of the original Chinese character for Qi, which is a pot of rice boiling with steam coming out- the rice symbolizing the matter and steam the energy.

Does it hurt?

Probably the most frequent question asked. Generally the answer is no. The acupuncture needle is a very thin solid needle unlike the hollow hypodermic version. Even under a microscope, these needles are incredibly smooth and uniform. A slight pinch can be felt along with other sensations such as dull ache, itching, tingling, or warmth. Rarely there might be the occasional sharper sensation but this generally fades away in a few seconds.

Does it only work for musculoskeletal pain?

Although this is the most common reason people receive acu22

puncture it is not the only situation it is helpful for. Acupuncture and more specifically TCM is a comprehensive system of healthcare that has the capability of addressing just about any health issue that may arise – physically and emotionally.

Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture?

Yes, many insurance companies are offering acupuncture benefits now. As it becomes more mainstream, the public is continually requesting this benefit. Insurance companies are beginning to realize that acupuncture is a cost effective form of treatment and seem to be responding to public demand. One of the most important issues addressed in this article is the understanding that acupuncture is just one aspect of TCM. TCM is an ever evolving and empirically proven system of medicine capable of dealing with most of the ailments that affect our modern society today. It is safe, cost effective, gentle, and can be utilized by everyone from pediatrics to geriatrics and all those in between. References: 1.www.ibiblio.org/chineseculture 2. Kaptchuk, Ted. CANDIDA Are Yeast Infections Making You Sick? (Continued from the February Issue) Written by Dr. Sally Rockwell

I

t is believed by medical experts today that 2/3 of the American population suffers from chronic Candida and the leading culprit is thought to be antibiotics and diet. Candida is a condition of yeast overgrowth in the intestines causing a slue of problems.

Children who have Candida are often diagnosed with behavioral issues such as autistism, being hyper-active, and dyslexia. Thrush and diaper rash are examples of yeast infection in infants. Also, Candida can be transferred from mother to child at birth.

Antibiotics kill bacteria, both the good and bad bacteria, but they don’t kill yeast. The past abuse of prescribing antibiotics by the medical industry, plus the wide-spread use of antibiotics by the food industry is killing the good bacteria. This gives the eager yeast (who haven’t had room to grow before) a chance to multiply in our guts, to increase in numbers and crowd out the good bacteria. The helpful bacteria, such as acidophilus strains, compete with any intestinal fungus such as yeast and other germs to keep them from taking over. Acidophilus also have the function of making vitamins and enzymes as well as their own form of antibiotics. When antibiotic medication is taken it will kill off this very important bacteria and the yeast will then take over.

Converting to a low starch and low sugar diet will decrease yeast colonies in the intestines, improve health and strengthen the immune system. The fewer yeast in our gut, the less toxins emitted into our systems. The toxins (poisons) weaken and confuse our immune system and we become increasingly sensitive to foods and chemicals. The stress of a poor diet and vitamin and mineral deficiencies deplete our body’s ability to heal itself, and it will begin to deteriorate.

Other prescribed drugs and conditions that encourage yeast overgrowth are birth control pills, steroids (cortisone type drugs), stress, poor diet; even pregnancy interferes with hormonal balance and encourages yeast growth. Cortisone drugs weaken the immune system because they raise blood sugar. Increased progesterone through use of birth control pills or during pregnancy accounts for many vaginal yeast infections in women. Mercury (Silver) dental fillings may also contribute to an overgrowth of yeast due to the neurotoxic and immunotoxic and antibiotics nature. The average diet today also is a problem. According to Professor Steven Rochlitz in his book “Allergies and Candida” we eat over 100 times the sugar content that our grandparents ate at the turn of the century. Sugar is feeding yeast and contributing to our country’s poor health. Among all sugars, sucrose is the worst and a favorite of yeast.

When first changing to a healthier diet it is normal to feel worse for a few days, but then the old complaints should start to disappear, one at a time. Complaints such as, “I didn’t know I was depressed until I wasn’t,” or “I didn’t know I only require 7 hours of sleep instead of 9,” or “I think I’m a teenager and feel like one until the mirror reminds me I am not.” Check the January issue “Treatment and Getting Well!” THIS IS INFORMATION ONLY, AND NOT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. Mindfulness Meditation

T

o develop the necessary concentration for Mindfulness Meditation you may want to begin your meditation focusing and strengthening your ability to follow breath. After some time you can expand your awareness from breath to include the sensations of the body. Then eventually you welcome whatever arises. The goal of Mindfulness meditation is to be completely in the here and now as it occurs. Practice is necessary to develop and stabilize your concentration for this particular meditation. Sit comfortably, spine tall and close your eyes. Become completely aware. Notice each and every moment. Feel the breath and follow it. Be in the here and now. Let your experience unfold as you keep your awareness on the present moment. Mindfulness awareness allows and embraces whatever arises. Sit still, very still being with all that presents itself in the moment. Continue to be mindful for 20 minutes. Then when you open your eyes let this building of awareness go with you into the day.

A Steamboat In The Desert

The Early History of Steamboat Hot Springs, Nevada Written by Rita Glover

B

ehold! A Steamboat in the desert!” (Mark Twain, 1861). The natural geothermal waters of Steamboat Hot Springs a few miles south of Reno, Nevada have attracted people for ages, including famous author Mark Twain. Prior to 1900, the site featured the third largest geyser in the United States, which erupted 60 to 80 feet into the air, surrounded by open pools of boiling hot water. This historical landmark has a notably fascinating past as the location for a Grand hotel, a hospital, a training facility for famous boxers, a therapeutic healing center for a well-known race horse and those searching out relief from their ailments. Native Americans often located their winter camps along the creek and used the hot spring water for cooking. During the California Gold Rush in 1849, early settlers coming through the Truckee Meadows area found fissures in the ground that emanated steam. The first development of the hot springs was in 1859, consisting of a tiny shed with two rooms, one for a tub and one for steam. In 1860, more sheds were constructed to capture the steam and artesian spring water. Dr. James Ellis, a hydrotherapist from England, set up a hospital in 1861 using the hot spring water for healing.

With the influx of silver miners and money to the Comstock Lode in nearby Virginia City, the site was developed with a hotel, dance hall and saloon, and of course the hot baths. It was described by one visitor as “the onliest joint within a day’s journey where a fellow could rinse his silver-coated person.” The story goes that Steamboat was named by the famous author Mark Twain, who had become a newspaperman in Virginia City after working as a steamboat captain on the Mississippi River. Riding over the hills to visit the site, he associated the columns of steam rising into the air with the riverboats he had known. He shouted, “Behold! A steamboat in the desert!” and the name stuck. Steamboat Hot Springs was first a stagecoach stop and later a train station. After the Virginia & Truckee Railroad was built in 1870, Steamboat was only a halfhour train ride from downtown Reno. This train service continued until 1950 when the V&T was shut down. Currently the V&T is being revived, but not planned to be routed through Steamboat. The water was analyzed in the 1880s and found to contain natural chlorine, sodium, silica, borate, sulfate, carbonate, potassium, lithium, calcium, arsenic, phosphate, antimony, magnesium, alu-

mina, iron, and mercury. Gold and silver content was found in a later analysis. All life on this planet came from mineral salts in geothermal water, which saturate that water to the concentrations found in ancient oceans. In 1935, state engineer Alfred Merritt Smith wrote about Steamboat Springs: “Geologically, the springs are among the most interesting in the world, for they demonstrate in a striking way how mineral veins and deposits are formed. The hot water is constantly depositing silica, gold, silver, mercury, antimony, and other minerals and metals, which it holds in solution. The silica is held in solution as a jelly-like colloid, and upon the evaporation of the water is deposited as translucent gelatinous silica, which on the surface is gradually dehydrated to become amorphous white sinter. In cracks and crevices, the silica becomes banded chalcedony, or even quartz. The metals are deposited simultaneously with the silica. One of the most beautiful mineral specimens in the well-known Mackay School of Mines Museum at Reno is a mass of intermixed dazzling white silica, crimson cinnabar, and meta-stibnite from Steamboat Springs.” Illustrious visitors during the mining era included President Ulysses S. Grant and his family. The Grand Hotel was the site of musical concerts, grand balls, and many festive occasions. But on December 10, 1900, an earthquake caused the hot springs and geyser to dry up. Then on April 21, 1901, one of the frequent wildfires in the area burned the hotel and most of the other buildings to the ground. In 1925, Dr. Edna Carver, DO bought the land, drilled a new well, and built the Pioneer State Health Hotel. She operated a hospital there until another fire leveled it in 1937. It was rebuilt, but burned again in 1942. Steamboat Hot Springs is now a historical landmark with a significant legacy in the sports world. In 1924, a boxing promoter contracted with the owner to use the spa as a training camp because of the healing properties of the hot mineral water, mud, and steam when applied to his injured boxers.

heavyweight boxer, trained at Steamboat. In 1932, King Levinsky, a Chicago heavyweight, trained here with Jack Dempsey. Uzcudun and Levinsky were both preparing for 20-round bouts with Max Baer. Jack Dempsey was in a fight that was held at Steamboat during this period. In 1936 Ray Impelliterre used the ring at Steamboat to train for a bout in San Francisco. In the horse racing world, the champion Man o’ War was brought to Steamboat in the 1940s to take its waters and muds after he had sustained serious injuries, and the horse returned to win the Kentucky Derby after many thought he would never race again. Around 1940, in an attempt to attract financing to build a major resort at Steamboat Springs, Dr. Carver wrote a prospectus detailing the thermogenic healing uses of the water, and the use of the mineral mud for the treatment of many disorders. These included arthritis, sciatica, rheumatism, phlebitis, arteriosclerosis, blood diseases, stomach disturbances, myocitis, lumbago, neuritis, neuralgia, gout, paralysis, Bright’s disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, cirrhosis of the liver, throat and sinus problems, nervous disorders, imperfections of the complexion, metallic poisoning, alcoholism, drug addiction, blood diseases such as pernicious anemia and leukemia, malaria, colds, obesity, constipation, overeating, under-exercise, and recuperation following illness. Dr. Carver’s prospectus noted the accessibility of Steamboat from all parts of the country via air, car, or rail, and the skiing, hunting, and fishing activities, which abound nearby. She envisioned a large resort with Spanish-style architecture. Visitors can find that today and can take advantage of the incomparable healing waters that have been renowned through history. It’s always been about the water. References: 1. A Steamboat in the Desert: A History of Steamboat Springs, Nevada. By Roger Bowen Weld, 1998. Eating in Harmony with the Seasons Written by Gary Danchak, OMD

I

n order to stay healthy, especially during the cold & flu season of winter, Chinese Medicine recommends that you eat foods that are energetically in harmony with the season. Although it seems paradoxical at first glance, the best way to maintain balance is to bring your internal energy “in” by eating appropriate energetically cold foods in winter and “out” by eating energetically hot food in the summer. In Chinese Medicine all foods have a particular energy, direction and flavor. Winter is the season in which energy moves inward and hibernates—it’s the time of pure yin (female, cold, fuel, potential-for-action), so it’s appropriate to eat energetically cold, salty foods (yin foods) so that you can cool off the interior of your body to the point that it’s in balance with what the exterior of your body is feeling outdoors. Winter is the season associated with the water/Kidney organ system whose duty is to “store the essence” (or “jing”), the time in which your body rebuilds teeth, bone and marrow. Energetically cold, yin foods include beans, pork, shellfish, seaweed, hops, banana, barley, and grapefruit. The overriding mantra in Chinese Medicine is: eat everything (preferably over rice). What they mean is it’s best to include more energetically cold foods in winter, but not to switch to an exclusively cold diet. Spring is the season of growth, of yin-becoming-yang, the time when we fertilize our plants and ourselves. It’s the time to eat foods that have an upward

moving energetic (warm and sweet foods) to stay in harmony with the season of growth. Spring is the season of wind and change. It’s associated organ is the wood/ Liver, whose duty is to repair the sinews (defined as sources of strength, strong and rigorous), nerves and tendons. Liver nourishing, spring foods include: cucumber, egg, green onion, persimmon, plum, wine, chicken, sesame, and not surprisingly, liver. Summer is the time of pure yang (male, hot, fire, action-itself), and so it’s appropriate to eat yang foods—energetically hot foods that turn up your internal thermostat to match the heat that falls on the exterior of your body outdoors. The energetic is outward-moving. Summer is the season in which the fire/Heart organ system and the blood repairs itself. Heart nourishing, summer foods include: pepper, ginger, cinnamon, radish, wheat, corn, pumpkin, goose. Late summer is the season of the earth/ Spleen, an organ system so important in Chinese thought that they made up a season for it: late or Indian Summer, the time of yang-becoming-yin. The Spleen is responsible for turning food into “gu qi” (food qi/energy), which combines with the “kong qi” (lung qi/energy) of the Lung to make the usable qi (energy) that guides the blood through our bodies. It’s the way we get energy from the outside world and use it to build and sustain muscle. Spleen foods include rice, beef, honey, peanuts, and squash.

organ is the skin and nasal mucosa. It is a time for storing energy for the winter’s hibernation. Eat foods that move downward and begin to astringe, sour and cool foods, including: maize, millet, duck, grapes and green onion. Inappropriate energetically cold foods should be avoided all year long because they create an internal pathogen called “damp” which slows the transmission of qi (life force/vital energy) in your organ systems. Among the worst are: sugar, alcohol, cheese (and all animal fats), icy cold drinks, excessive consumption of raw fruits and vegetables, processed foods and coffee. Seasonally appropriate eating means “including some appropriate energetically cold foods in the cold seasons, but not, of course, to radically change a basic good diet. Choosing natural, unconcentrated seasonally appropriate foods from the bounty around us is the best way to maintain our health through all the seasons of our years. From the Healthy Beginnings Test Kitchen of Lois Ehlers Remember when necessity was the mother of invention for most tools, etc.? Well it’s that way in cooking, too. Yesterday, I had to stay inside because of the howling wind and snow. I was hungry for Oyster stew like I fed my family many times. Here’s what to do when you don’t have fresh oysters use an 8 oz. can of oysters (Luckily for me, I found one in the pantry) and turn it into Blizzard Oyster Stew. It was good, even though I didn’t have Fresh Oysters!!!!! Lois M Ehlers

Directions: Cook the potato in the chicken broth until tender and sauté the onion. Add the milk and cream, celery seed, thyme, cayenne pepper. Cook above ingredients just below a simmer until tender. Add the oysters and 2-3 tbs of the oyster liquid. Heat through and add salt and pepper to taste.

Honey vs. Sugar

P

eople have often never considered honey as a natural substitute for sugar. The search for a better sweetener has been going on for years. The local café tables often display sweetener such as equall, nutrasweet, and splenda, and although they may be a low-calorie alternative, they are chemically formulated and are not natural to the body. When sugar is processed the organic acids, proteins, nitrogen elements, enzymes, and vitamins in the sugar cane are destroyed. Honey that is subjected to minimal heating is a natural sweetener with beneficial antioxidant and antimicrobial properties that are not present in table sugar.

molecules apart before the sugar is turned into energy. Honey is different; bees add an enzyme to the nectar that divides the sucrose into glucose and fructose, two simple sugars that the body absorbs directly. The Glycemic Index (GI) measures the negative impact of food on blood-glucose level. The lower the GI rating the slower the absorption and infusion of sugars into the bloodstream. Compared to sugar, honey has a healthier GI rating for a more gradual digestion process maintaining a constant energy level.

Here are a few nutritional facts about honey and sugar. One tablespoon of table sugar contains 46 calories. One tablespoon of honey has 64 calories. Though honey may have more calories, one actually needs to use less honey than sugar, since honey is much sweeter as a result, less honey is consumed.

Besides the differences in nutrition sugar has a difficult time competing with honey in taste. Both are sweet, however honey has a range of floral varieties that experience the uniqueness of each variety and explore every possibility, to complement different types of foods.

CONSCIOUSHEALTH

Addiction & Solution Based Recovery Written by Louise Sutherland, M.Ed. and Jo Anne Krumpe, Ph.D.

R

ethinking a new recovery means moving out of the problem and into the solution. In today’s world, it is important that we ask questions that inspire our innate strengths, to transcend the mindset of “problem, powerless, and victim.” We shoulder heavy burdens, and we are not prepared. There is a foreboding sense that this is a condition of our culture and our collective consciousness. We may struggle to pay the bills and worry. We may fight and grieve for what once was and is no more. We aren’t sleeping well. Hope is in short supply. In scanning our surroundings we read that Reno has a huge drinking problem. Looking closer, we discover 2 highly disturbing statistics about the state of Nevada’s mental health as it relates to the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. How might these numbers indicate the relatedness to the reality that for many these are hard times? Nevada Statistics: •According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 90% of all suicides are committed by individuals who are affected by Substance Abuse, Depression, or another mood disorder. •Nevada holds the distinction of having the nation’s second highest suicide rate in the country. Nevada’s rate of suicide is double the national average. We believe it is time to abandon the problem-focused, powerless victim approach and to imagine a new recovery, one that is grounded in strengths and solutions. The purpose of this article is to re-

spond to these harsh realities and to ask ourselves as providers, “what is standing in the way of progress?” What has to happen in order for us to imagine a new paradigm of hope and self responsibility? We see that over the past 40 years we have evolved into a culture of “powerless victims”. No one wants to take responsibility for their own behavior, so we say we have a “disease” over which we are told we are powerless. This phenomenon traces its roots directly to the Twelve Step program of Alcoholics Anonymous and its various offspring from which was born “The Recovery Movement”. We acknowledge that the message of Alcoholics Anonymous did, at one point, instill hope in a community that society had judged as “morally flawed”. We also see that the “Recovering” worldview of the 80s and 90s has perpetuated a “victimized”, “entitled”, and “powerless” mindset; that we have to “hit bottom”, admit being powerless, spill our guts, and expect that a higher power is going to “remove our shortcomings”. We believe that these notions are outdated and serve no purpose in healing a hurting culture. But before we throw the baby out with the bathwater, we begin by examining the flipside of the “recovery” mindset and what we can salvage as we rethink what it could mean to be “In Recovery”. We believe that Solution –Focused Therapy can combine with the foundational recovery work to form an evolved treatment program that may offer a client more power and successful outcomes. We begin with “The Miracle Question”. “Suppose that while you are asleep tonight, a miracle happens and your problem is solved just like that! But because you were sleeping, you didn’t know that there has been a miracle. What is the first thing that will let you know that your problem has been solved?” (Miller and Berg, 1995). At this moment we are invited to take the first step toward being fully empowered to manage our lives. The Miracle inspires examination of our strengths and how we are already using our own inner and outer resources to solve problems. The process of the Miracle affirms that we are the authority, the expert on what

will work for us. We use the past only to identify “what has worked” to solve our problems and not to reinforce our limitations. We discard the notion that Alcoholism and other Addictions are diseases. We embrace the belief that our clients are empowered to make choices and that whatever motivates a client to change that is good enough.

Women’s Empowerment Group

How valuable is a map that leads to where we don’t want to go? As therapists we value our client’s ability to chart their own course utilizing their unique strengths, even in dealing with problems resulting from the abuse of alcohol or other drugs. As therapists, our role is to assist clients to identify what drives them forward. When we are acquainted with our clients’ beliefs and strengths we can assist them to establish a foundation for achieving their goals. As therapists, we yield to our clients’ expertise in determining desired outcomes. From a therapeutic standpoint, we have come to understand that “Denial” is in the theory of the therapist, and not in the client.

Tools for transformation • Resolved Trauma • Assertive Courtesy • Successful Intimacy • Nurturing Relationships

In summary, we are in the “Hope” business. The processes and thoughts of the past are not enough to take us toward the future envisioned by our clients. The Problem-focused disease based paradigm of the “Recovery Movement” is adept at finding sickness; a concept whose time has come and gone. A Solution-FocusedStrengths-Based therapeutic partnership is based in optimism, a powerful concept, a New Recovery. When we have a program of hope we activate from within and without whereby any change is possible! References: 1. Miller, S.D. & Berg, I. K. (1995). The Miracle Method. New York: Norton and Co. 2. NATURALSOLUTIONS

That Tingling Sensation

By Ffjorren Zolfaghar There are common cases in which numbness occurs on a frequent basis. Generally speaking, these are often related to other issues. For instance, some people complain of their arms becoming numb during their sleep, each and every time they sleep. Research suggests that this may be due to Carpal tunnel syndrome. The Carpal tunnel is a very small passageway on the palm side of your wrist. It protects a primary nerve to your hand, as well as nine tendons that move and bend your fingers. If pressure is placed on this area for an extended amount of time, a person can develop numbness, pain and weakness in their hand and arm. A prior injury or repetitive use of your wrist or hand can cause Carpal tunnel syndrome. Some people also fall into this painful predicament because of another health condition they have, like: Rheumatoid Arthritis, diabetes, thyroid disorders, menopause or fluid retention due to pregnancy. If you are experiencing similar symptoms, make sure to consult a physician. In the meantime, you can try these natural solutions to help ease pain and treat Carpal tunnel syndrome:

H

ave you ever experienced the tingling, pins and needles kind of feeling in your extremities? Is it a numb feeling that will not go away? Maybe your arm simply “fell asleep,” or maybe it’s something a little more serious: Carpal tunnel Syndrome. When it is simply a situation of a limb “falling asleep,” here’s how that happens. You are lying on your sofa, watching TV, and you happen to rest one arm under your head. As soon as you sit up, you notice a numbness in your arm and then the tingling kicks in. When you begin to move and shake your arm, the feeling becomes almost painful. After a while, the pain and numbness subsides and your arm “wakes up.” There are a couple of things going on inside your body when this occurs. When you apply pressure to one part of your body, in this case your arm, you are literally cutting off communication from your nerve endings in your arm to your brain. That pressure is squeezing the nerve pathway, which does not allow the nerve ending to transmit signals to your brain. Those signals include instructions on how your arm should feel and react to any stimulus. Therefore, when your brain cannot receive the information, it does not know how to respond and you, in turn, do not have full feeling in your arm. After you release the pressure off of your arm and begin to move around a little, the feeling returns because your nerve impulses are able to flow properly again. The communication between your body and brain is restored. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

1) When you wake in the morning, take a few minutes to stretch your hands and wrists, for example: •Hold your left hand in front of you and bring all of your fingers together. •Take your right hand and gently bend all of your left hand fingers back, toward you’re the top of your forearm. •Switch hands and perform the same activity on your right hand. 2) Take breaks when you are performing an activity that utilizes your hands and wrists. 3) Give yoga a try (stretching and strengthening are just what your joints, ligaments and muscles need). 4) Acupuncture might help with the pain. 5) B Vitamins aid in nerve function. Vitamin B6 helps to improve tissue oxygenation. 6) Try wearing a wrist splint at night, when you are sleeping. References: 1. Balch, Phyllis. Prescription for nutritional healing. A New Breakthrough in Chiropractic Healing! No

D S T RI N I O O T

Here!

Written by Dr. Tony Jensen, DC

T

here is a new exciting breakthrough in treating and healing pinched nerves. Back and neck pain, headaches, numbness or tingling anywhere in the body can be caused by pinched nerves. Pinched nerves and their side effects are described in the Healthy Beginnings February, 2010 issue titled: “Pinched Nerve Caring for Your Nervous System.” Chiropractors believe in treating the source of the problem effectively and naturally. One should not have to rely on medication to get through the day, as drugs tend to mask the problem rather than treating it at the source. With the ProAdjuster Vision Technology, Chiropractic is taken to the next level. What is the ProAdjuster? It is an advanced computer and engineering technology, with a hand-held device that allows Doctors of Chiropractic to both analyze and treat the human body in ways never realized before. Newborns, as well as the elderly with osteoporosis can be treated safely and gently with this innovative mechanism. How does it work? The ProAdjuster computer system uses a

piezoelectric sensor in the soft-tipped instrument to administer a precise oscillating force which measures specific levels of joint motion in a relaxed, effective manner. With the patient sitting in an upright position, the treatment is performed comfortably, without any turning or sudden movements. Data is then transferred and displayed on the computer monitor, allowing the doctor to isolate and treat the problem area faster and more accurately than manual procedures. Following the treatment, the ProAdjuster’s sophisticated re-analysis allows both the patient and the doctor to chart all progress toward successful recovery. If you or someone you care about is experiencing the effects of pinched nerves & you are not under chiropractic care, NOW is the best time to start. Remember, it’s always best to rule out pinched nerves before other symptoms start. For more info, contact Dr. Jensen at Jensen Chiropractic (775) 323-1222. Go to ad on THIS page.

Therapy Review for Skin Conditions Written by Kathy Sargenti and Cindy Sult, RN

s we get older, our skin is the most telling sign of aging. However, today we have many options to improve skin condition. There is no need to avoid wearing shorts because of spider veins, wear heavy makeup because of rosacea, age spots or acne, and wrinkles can be minimized. At Cosmetic Aesthetics Laser Salon, we provide comprehensive screening & education and develop a partnership with you in treating your issues. Our Fotona Nd:YAG laser provides the most flexibility and patient comfort of any laser on the market. Cindy Sult RN, has been a registered nurse for over 20 years, the last 10 of which she has been working in the cosmetic laser industry. She is a co-owner of the business and is currently an instructor of “Skin & Skeletal Systems” at Career College of Northern Nevada (CCNN)

for high levels of success includes education, laser treatments and skin care products.

Spider Veins: (Telangiectasia) Are widely dilated blood vessels and can be located anywhere on the body. Spider Veins are not the same as varicose veins. Spider veins are common in healthy people and are usually caused by sun damage or aging. They can also occur at any age, but usually appear between 18-35 years and peaks between 50-60 years of age. There are three main treatment options for Spider veins: Laser treatments, sclerotherapy, and electro-cautery. Sclerotherapy & electro-cautery can leave scarring. Laser treatments, with the Fotona Nd:YAG laser offers flexible settings and exceptional patient comfort without scarring.

Wrinkles: As we age, our skin thins which is due to reduced collagen production. And our skin doesn’t turn over as often as in our youth. Laser photo-rejuvenation stimulates the dermis to produce more collagen, thus giving us a plump, more youthful appearance. A line of skin care products that encourages the more rapid turnover of skin cells, gives us that healthy pink glow associated with youth.

Rosacea: is a chronic skin condition involving inflammation of the cheeks, chin, nose, forehead or eyelids. It may appear as redness, prominent spider-like blood vessels, swelling or skin eruptions similar to acne. While there is no cure for rosacea, it generally can be successfully controlled. The best approach For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

Age Spots: 80% of all age spots have a vascular nature. An Nd:YAG laser, which targets blood supply, is very successful with that type of age spot. The remaining 20% are melanin type age spots, which can be successfully treated with education, skin care products, and various peels. Acne: Acne has many causes including stress & hormone fluctuations. Proper skin care includes using safe OTC products even shampoos, and hair gels. Treating active inflammations or lesions with laser, having a recommended skin care regime specific to your skin type and closely monitored progress are essential when developing a program for success.

This approach to breast health is very appealing because when alerted to abnormal changes in breast thermography the woman can then change her body chemistry to promote a normal scan on follow up evaluation, usually in three months time. It is truly a revolution in breast health care by not only helping the physician; patient team to be proactive, but also in avoiding exposure of the breasts to radiation that some studies have shown actually increase the incidence of breast cancer. The FDA has approved breast thermography since 1983 for adjunctive screening for breast cancer. Recent studies have shown 97% sensitivity for detecting breast malignancy. Breast thermography has been researched for over 30 years with over 800 peer-reviewed studies existing in the Index Medicus of well over 250,000 women with an average sensitivity and specificity of 90%. Chives

It is thought that those sticks are what we now call chives. Though they will not tell your future, they do act as a tasty addition to many dishes. Chives belong to the same family as onions, leeks and garlic. The botanical name, Allium schoenoprasum L., comes from the Greek meaning “reed-like leek. Although they are native to Asia and Eastern Europe, by the 16th century chives were common plants in herb gardens throughout Europe. The leaves are round and hollow, similar to green onions, but smaller in diameter. In June or July, chives produce large round flower heads consisting of purple to pink flowers. The leaves are best used when fresh. However, they may also be finely chopped and frozen for later use. When dried, the leaves may lose their onionlike flavor. Chives are usually used fresh and are a common addition to baked potatoes, cream soups and egg dishes. Some Asian soups call for chives as a garnish. Chives are a milder alliums vegetable, exhibiting fewer sulfur compounds. While other alliums like garlic or onion are well documented to possess anticlotting, hypolipidemic, antiviral and

Population studies have shown that a higher intake of alliums vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of several types of cancers. The organ sulfur compounds they contain inhibit tumor growth and cell proliferation, and stop the cell cycle in tumor cells. Allium vegetables, including chives, especially have a protective effect against both esophageal and stomach cancer as well as prostate cancer. The highest antioxidant activity in chives is observed in the leaves, which are also rich in flavonoids.

Evolv enhances absorption of vitamins, minerals, proteins and other nutrients; this is due to Evolv’s neutral alkaline level. It also increases stamina, endurance and energy levels as well as promotes healthy circulation and supports the immune system. THERE IS SCIENCE BEHIND EVOLV: The formula has been under scientific research and development for over 15 years and has now been through “in vitro” testing at Future Ceuticals ® Research lab in Illinois. It is believed that the proprietary blend of the all natural Archaea Activetm formula, which is added to the spring water in Evolv is involved with specific cell signaling processes that stimulate other cells to assist the healing process. This product helps with increased oxygen at the cellular level coupled with promoting a healthy inflammatory response, because as we know, inflammation in the body can lead to disease. Adding the Archaea Activem formula to water is brilliant, because you are consuming essential nutrients every day by drinking Evolv. THE INGREDIENTS OF EVOLV: 100% natural spring water combined with 100% natural organic ingredients. No caffeine, no sugar, nothing artificial. The colorless, flavorless ingredients combined with the crisp, superior taste of natural spring water are all packaged in a BPAfree bottle. All the ingredients are G.R.A.S. approved (generally recognized as safe by the FDA). Alfalfa is a main ingredient that is rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that play a vital role in the strength and growth of our bones and in the maintenance of a healthy body. The primary properties of alfalfa are generally considered to be anti-inflammatory, diuretic and nutritive. In fact, alfalfa is said to contain over 300 nutrients and phytonutrients. Other ingredients include natural enzymes such as: Bromelain, Papain, Protease, Amylase, Lipase, Lactase, and Cellulase. Enzymes do everything from helping us breathe to maintaining healthy digestion. Enzymes allow for chemical reactions. Another important ingredient is whey protein, one of the richest known sources of naturally occurring branched-chain amino acids. It is a high quality and low fat protein enabling people to achieve a healthy weight and maintain lean muscle. This protein assists in repair and rebuilding lean muscle tissue that has been broken down. Whey protein delivers essential amino acids to the body and is absorbed quickly and efficiently. Improve your health and get important nutrients through the refreshing delicious 100% natural, enhanced spring water beverage of Evolv. empted by a rush to riches by multinational corporations and international bankers, led by the World Trade Organization. She argues that both economics and business need to be put back into the human social context. Drawing on subjects as diverse as anthropology, physics, geopolitics and neurology, Hertz’s economic vision is at once eclectic and holistic, which probably explains her ability to foresee dangers and opportunities that others do not. She explains that globalism isn’t just allowing companies to trade freely all over the world. It’s about what types of rights and responsibilities come with that. With inequality surging, resources rapidly diminishing, and the stability of many countries in question, capitalism-at-all-costs is no longer an option. Long ago she saw the flaws in this very extreme form of capitalism where the pendulum has swung so far in one direction that the focus is completely on the short term, and no one is thinking about the consequences.

Reviewed by June Milligan For HB Magazine

oreena Hertz is a gentle, soft-spoken Cambridge University economist who was able to predict our current global economic disaster almost a decade ago. Part activist, part detective, she did her research, and found that as far back as 200l, over half of the world’s 100 largest economies were corporations, not countries. The sales of General Motors and Ford were greater than the gross domestic product of all of sub-Saharan Africa, and WalMart had a turnover higher than the revenues of most Eastern European countries. Now in 2010 even more of the world’s largest economies are corporations. The author gives us some history of this trend, then focuses on some of the major causes. Probably the most important cause is government’s mad dash to deregulate commerce and industry during the last twenty years. The picture this book paints shows nothing less than the hijacking of our democratic political heritage by large global corporations who pay few taxes and no attention to local people, public health, labor rights, environmental degradation or national sovereignty. Now we can all see where the last 50 years of scandal-ridden politics and unfettered business and banking have landed us. Some years ago Hertz saw the dangers of a world economy in which ethics and humane considerations have been preFor past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

The most recent example of ignoring the consequences is the state of the current global financial crisis. This largest crisis since the Great Depression confirmed Hertz’s long-standing conviction that there would be dire consequences if unregulated markets were rewarded for success but not penalized for failure. Hertz is now being looked to as something of a visionary in Europe, someone uniquely qualified to rebuild our dilapidated economic theories while helping to create a blueprint for a new kind of capitalism. Her idea of “co-op capitalism” calls for businesses, governments and the public to experiment together to design new, more adaptive business models and financial structures that take both profit and larger social goals into account. Companies should be financially motivated to behave in ways that benefit everyone. Although Hertz comes from a long line of academics – her great grandfather was the chief rabbi of the U.K. and she speaks Russian, French, German, Hebrew and Arabic as well as English – her appreciation for business came from her parents who started their own fashion company. They were entrepreneurs so she grew up believing in the power of innovation. After Russia began to implode after the Berlin Wall fell, she was invited to help set up Russia’s first stock exchange, and was in the country during the 1991 coup. During those years she realized that how an economy functions is not just about a market anonymously distributing things, but is also about the way people relate to each other and how power is distributed. She argues that corporations are gaining immense power at the expense of society and democracy, and this dynamic has created a system where the corporation is king, the state its subject, and its citizens just consumers. When the financial crisis hit in September 2008, Hertz published a piece entitled, “The Death of Gucci Capitalism” in the British political magazine The New Statesman, declaring that we had come to the end of the Reagan-Thatcher era in which unregulated markets had more power than governments, where risk was seen as a public good and success was measured only by GDP; where the aggressive expansion of Anglo-American capitalism had left the world an “interconnected mess.” She 44

feels that this recent financial meltdown heralds the death of a paradigm. Since then some of the biggest corporations in the world have spotted her as being dead-on in her economic predictions and are making sure their senior management is aware of her theories by becoming engaged with what she thinks are some of the most important issues of the postcrisis world. These days she is taking notes of best practices around the world to help identify new ways of operating. In her speeches she mentions the billion-dollar Linux model and the field of biotechnology, where collaboration between academic institutions and companies is the norm. She points to the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy where co-ops work within a market-economy framework and are profit oriented, but because workers all own shares in the companies they work for, a long-term focus on collective success is built into the system. That area of Italy is one of the most successful economic regions in Europe, so they must be doing something right.

LOVE A

bright light, bone chilling air and a thunder of noise embrace the newly born child. Screams of confusion fill the air…hush…only the sound of falling tears are now heard. The baby is still, serene, laying in the arms of an angel, her mother. It would be amazing if each and every one of us encountered love, in that capacity, for the first time. Love from our mother, a love that is described as unconditional. If you were lucky enough to be born into that situation, you may have experienced an enlightened form of love as you first entered into this world. Unconditional love is defined as affection with no limits or conditions; complete love. Familial love and unconditional love seem to go hand in hand. Our mother or father might tell us that no matter how angry they are, they will always love us. Our brother or sister might push us around at home, but when someone else is doing the pushing, they’re always there to defend us. Your little brother might go into your bedroom, take your doll and give it to the dog. But, when he comes home from school crying, you find yourself instinctively caring for his needs. You tell your child that you will always be there for them, no matter what. “I would die for my child,” might run through your mind. These situations personify “unconditional,” right?

Familial Love Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar

When looking at familial love as a person’s first source of love, there are so many variables that exist. As soon as a baby is born, he or she is thrust into “their” life, their family. This family could be a single mom, a teen mom, an adoptive family, a two-parent family, a foster home, an orphanage or his or her grandparents or aunt and uncle. We all have a family of some sort; therefore, we all have an environment that will impact our cognitive and emotional dealings with love. Take a look at familial love within a “mainstream” family; which is generally one mother and one father. There are two human beings, from different families, coming together to work on creating a healthy and loving family. According to Carl Alasko, parents should “make sure your values, goals and style of parenting are sufficiently compatible to create a (relatively) united parenting style.” First off, this is a difficult task to say the least. Where some of us may posses the same geographic and demographic background as our partner, we still came from different family settings. Each of us learns love in a different capacity. Therefore, the learned behavior of love or unconditional love goes deeper and deeper. For example, your father might not give you praise, like a simple “good job son.” He still loves you, but he did not learn to provide this type of reassurance of care and love because he did not receive that from his father.

Emotional reassurance itself is not love; however it is one If you combine the definition of unconditional love and the of the many aspects of how we present our love, especially to thought of learned behavior, you get a person who is either our children. When we are young, love is relative. In a child’s capable or not capable of offering or receiving unconditional world, the love for a special toy is profound. As parents, it is love. There are, of course, inherited traits that were passed our place to provide children with the very basics of human to down genetically, however it seems that environmental impact human love. That being caring, nurturing and showing affection plays a larger role in how a person is loved, perceives love and For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com 46 March 2010 gives love.

Cost of Veterinary Care

S

ometimes pet owners wonder about the costs of providing quality veterinary care for their pets. Why is veterinary care for my pet(s) so expensive these days? Sometimes it seems we spend more on our pet’s health care than on our own. The cost of veterinary care has actually risen very little during the last 20 to 30 years. When compared to the rising cost of human health care, pet care is not at all unreasonable. Bear in mind that your veterinarian is your pet’s general physician, surgeon, radiologist, dentist, dermatologist, neurologist, ophthalmologist, psychiatrist, ears/nose/throat doctor, and pharmacist. Your veterinary bill is a reflection of the costs of maintaining suitable facilities, equipment, and support personnel to provide the level of care that is expected in animal medicine today. Although it may feel as if you are paying more for your pet’s health care than your own, chances are that you probably have adequate health care insurance for your own needs. Consequently, you may never see the total bottom-line figure for your own doctor bills. When human health care costs are added up - including insurance, deductibles, and pharmaceutical costs - there is no comparison to the much lower veterinary care costs. Today, pet health insurance is available to offset the costs of your furry friends’ medical expenses in much the same way that yours are. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) strongly suggests that all pet owning families assess their financial situation and consider their ability to meet unexpected expenses that may be incurred for veterinary care. For some families, these expenses may be met through existing savings. Others may be able to use credit card reserves or medical payment cards. Some families should consider budgeting for these expenses and still March 2010

47

others may want to consider protecting themselves through pet health insurance policies. For those considering pet health insurance, AAHA offers the following suggestions: •Be sure you understand what the policy covers. Some policies (but not all) cover some preventative care, such as vaccinations, but not always. •Understand the exclusions. Almost all policies exclude pre-existing conditions and some exclude hereditary conditions. Some may exclude certain conditions unique to certain breeds. •Almost all policies have a deductible and a co-pay requirement. Some pay according to a set schedule of “usual and customary fees” while some pay based on the actual incurred expense. Understand how expenses will be reimbursed. •Ask whether or not the policy allows you to seek care from a veterinarian of your own choice or a network of providers. •Speak with your veterinarian or someone in the practice. Your veterinarian may have experience with different policies and can provide advice. Remember you would never expect your own physician to provide diagnosis, care, and medication free of charge. You cannot ask your veterinarian to do this for your pet. The owner ultimately determines care of the pet. Every pet owner has different ideas about what is acceptable pet care. Veterinarians can only make their clients aware of the services and products that are available and then provide guidance in options. As a pet owner ask for an estimate of the charges. Continued from page 46... (Love 2, Familial Love) in both physical and verbal actions. Little things like hugs and kisses, praise and just spending time with your kids show them that you love and care for them. As parents, siblings and children, we all do our best at showing our love. According to the book, “five good minutes with the one you love,” here are a few practices that you can do with a family member every day, to deepen your connection. 1)Have a greeting ritual. Rather than jumping right into daily topics of discussion, show them you care by saying, “I am so glad you’re home. You fill my life with joy.” Or, “it’s always so good to see you. You still make me melt with love.” 2) Give a spoonful of reassurance. Acknowledge your partner or children’s accomplishments, both big and small. Write your child a note, thanking them for something they did the previous day and pop it into their lunch. If they make their own lunch, wake up a few minutes early and make their lunch for them. 3) Laugh out loud. While sitting with your loved one, make a conscious effort to laugh together. Take turns laughing back and forth. Then, laugh together. 4) Honor your commitments. Think of the vows you made to your partner and to yourself. Say them aloud to your partner. Then, tell your partner the following, “I pledge to honor my vows to you every day.” You can also do this with your children. Make sure to follow through with any commitments you made to them and let them know that you will be there for them. Next month, we will take another look at unconditional love. Is this the love that most of us strive for and search? If you have a “love” story you would like to share, please e-mail it to ffjorren@ hbmag.com. References: 1.Brantley MD, Jeffrey. Monthly Health Outlook:

THE SUN IN

PISCES Written By Robert Ayres

T

he Sun enters into Pisces on February 18. There is a shift from the air element of Aquarius to the Piscean water element at this time. The emphasis in consciousness moves from thinking to feeling.

human thinking, but rather spiritual or celestial thought. Here we encounter true universal truths that are eternal in their nature. These truths embody the unchanging principles upon which all life is based.

The Fishes, the last of the 12 signs, represents the state of completion. The signs evolve from the self-consciousness of Aries to the all-inclusive unity consciousness of Pisces. This last sign of the zodiac has two planetary rulers. Jupiter, the traditional ruler, expresses as wisdom and is the archetype of the teacher. Neptune is its modern ruler and it expresses as spirituality and idealism. Jupiter is based more in thinking and Neptune is based more in feeling.

The expansion of the heart results in a qualitatively different love that is spiritual in nature. This is not a selfish love but an unbounded, unlimited love of life, the world, nature, and humanity. It is unconditional love. It is compassion.

When the heart and the mind come into balance, a new and higher state of consciousness is achieved. In the spiritual traditions of the world this state of being is known as love/wisdom. Love/wisdom is a heart-based thinking that is significantly different for what passes for thinking and feeling today. Most people think in a very calculating, clever manner that has personal self-interest as its motivating force. Feeling and love also tend to be egotistically conditioned towards self affirmation. These patterns of selfishness in consciousness are based in a sense of separation and isolation from other human beings. As such, our normal awareness is limited to our own experience and history. The love/wisdom of Pisces is based in an expansion of awareness from the personal to the universal. The development of the heart and mind results in a heart-based thinking conditioned by love. The wisdom that unfolds is not based in For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

When the heart opens in this way we feel everyone’s joy and happiness, pain and sorrow, as our own. We see ourselves in everyone and everything and experience the fundamental oneness of all life. This is unity consciousness: the individual living the universality of all life. Our individual and collective lives are moving toward realizing this higher quality of life. Pisces rules both the brow and crown chakras. Jupiter rules the brow and Neptune rules the crown. These consciousness centers open our perception into the spiritual worlds. The limitations of the physical senses are transcended and all of the celestial dimensions of life are opened to our awareness. The physiological counterparts to the chakras are the endocrine glands. These ductless glands secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream, which powerfully affects our awareness. Jupiter is the traditional ruler of the pituitary gland and Neptune is the modern ruler of the pineal gland. These two endocrine glands correspond to the brow and crown chakras respectively. They are the physical centers for the realization of Piscean consciousness. Most health problems will ultimately be traced to dysfunc52

tion and imbalance in the chakras or endocrine system. The pituitary is known as the master control for the whole endocrine system. Bringing the system into balance by activation and healing of the pituitary will bring the other centers into balance. Then the pineal gland/crown chakra opens us up to unity consciousness. The liver is also ruled by Jupiter and is an important organ for detoxification. In our society, with our unhealthy diets and environmental pollution, our livers are under significant stress. The endocrine system does not function in a balanced manner when the body is toxic. The good functioning of the liver is an important element for overall health and a healthy endocrine system. Golden seal, myrrh, echinacea and mugwort are herbs that can detoxify the liver and balance the hormonal system. Serious detoxing is best done with the guidance of your health professional. Humanity is evolving to expressing the Piscean consciousness through these higher centers. But nothing is holding us back from doing it now. Meditation is the most powerful technique to activate these expanded states of awareness. Go for it! THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. 2010 All Rights Reserved, Robert Ayres Robert Ayres is an internationally known astrologer with over 40 years of experience. ANSWERS:

True - It is a direct derivative of Latin ver meaning spring.

True - Boatyard employees and sailboat owners in Annapolis, Maryland celebrate the spring equinox with the Burning Of The Socks festival. Traditionally, the boating community wears socks only during the winter. These are burned at the approach of warmer weather, which brings more customers and work to the area. Officially, nobody then wears socks until the next equinox in the fall.
