STORY

F

icus carica, the common fig – a splendid and venerable fruit! Symbol of abundance and fertility, the fig is present in texts, art and lore of nearly all ancient cultures and religions. The list is long: Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, Hindu and Judaic writings, as well as Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Persian and Sumerian records. Ficus is believed to be not only the Tree of Life but also the Tree of Enlightenment. For rich and poor it was a diet staple. Evidence of the fig’s apparent cultivation goes back over 10,000 years. Figs are native to southwest Asia and the eastern Mediterranean region (Greece east to Afghanistan) and are grown in warm climes around the world. Figs grow wild in most Mediterranean countries. Very rich in fiber, figs also contain beta-carotene, calcium, iron, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamin C. Ripe figs are exceptionally high in antioxidants, including flavonoids and polyphenols. The riper the fruit, the greater the antioxidant levels. And happily for us, this dense fig nutrition is matched by wonderful, sweet fig flavor. Consider these possibilities: Fresh figs with goat cheese and slivered almonds; fennel and arugula salad with chunks of fig and shaved Parmesan; figs poached in wine or port, and drizzled with thick Greek yogurt or Italian mascarpone…it boggles the mind and beguiles the pallet. Fresh figs are generally available from the end of May through mid-October. Wishing you a new fig experience this season!

HEALTH BRAIN

Physical Activity BOOSTS

Brain Capacity By Lauren Birtwhistle

Y

our heart and waist line will thank you for embracing a regular exercise routine. But did you know your brain will too? The word exercise is derived from a Latin root meaning “to maintain, to keep, to ward off.” To exercise means to practice, put into action, train, perform, use, improve. Exercise is a natural part of life, but today we have to include it in our daily routine consciously. Biologically, it was part of survival, in the form of hunting and gathering or raising livestock and growing food. Our ancestors had exercise built into their lives. It was not an option. What is now considered a form of exercise – walking – was, for hundreds of thousands of years, our only form of transportation! You need exercise for more than just to look good in your swim suit. In previous issues, brain exercises for improving alertness and memory were discussed. This month, we look at what physical exercise does for your mind.

Exercise improves circulation.

The brain needs more oxygen than any other organ in your body. And it gets that oxygen from blood. So what exactly does this oxygen do? Simply put, oxygen gives cells the energy to do what they are supposed to: keep us alive, keep our heart beating and our brain thinking.

Many cells in the body can function for a short time using anaerobic metabolism (metabolism without oxygen). But the brain, while skilled at many things, is a poor anaerobic performer. Four or five minutes with no oxygen and the brain throws in the towel.

Handle stress better with more exercise.

Scientists are not sure of the exact reasoning behind this phenomena. But studies have shown that workers who exercise during the workday feel more productive and seem to handle job stress better than their sedentary colleagues.

Exercise optimizes your brain’s capacity to learn. Exercise boosts me-

tabolism, decreases stress and improves mood and attention, all of which help the brain perform better. According to Dr. John Ratey, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston, “The brain cells actually become more resilient and more pliable and are more ready to link up,” he says. It’s this

May 2008

8

linking up that allows us to retain new information. Science is unsure about how much exercise you need to reap the optimal benefits. But researchers do know that even a brisk walk a few times a week can be a great help. Take the time to include any kind of exercise in your life. You do not have to become a tri-athlete to start improving your health, body and mind! References: 1. www.avweb.com/news/aeromed/181937-1.html 2. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17050486/

PROVIDER

PROFILE

Daniel Kane By Sara Piccola

So what is Jin Shin Jyutsu? Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient Oriental healing art that is the basis of acupuncture and acupressure. However, no implements other than the hands are used. In Jin Shin Jyutsu, our bodies contain energy pathways called “flows” that feed life into our cells. When one or more of these paths become blocked, the resulting effect may lead to discomfort or pain. Jin Shin Jyutsu releases accumulated tensions and reminds the body of its natural balance and harmony, essential for optimal health. During a Jin Shin Jyutsu session the client removes only their shoes and jewelry, then lie on a treatment table to begin their 45-75 minute session. The practitioner is able to determine which areas of the body are stressed or tense by checking the clients’ energy pulses. The hands are used as “jumper cables,” contacting 26 “safety energy locks” to redirect or unblock the flow of energy along pathways. Each pathway serves as a distinct function or essence. The practitioner uses a series of hand placement combinations among the safety energy locks, stimulating the circulation of energy along pathways. This releases tension while helping with stress reduction and chronic pain. Here are a few self-help exercises that anyone can use anywhere at anytime: Every finger is a pathway to a function in our bodies. The thumb is for the stomach; the index finger is for the kidney and bladder; the middle finger is for our liver and eyesight; the ring finger is for our lungs; and the pinky is for the heart. For example, because the liver is associated with anger and stress, next time you lose your temper, simply hold onto your middle finger with your opposite hand and you’ll begin to calm down and release your anger. Holding onto your index finger can relax you if you’re feeling fearful about something. If you’re having trouble catching your breath, hold onto your ring finger. We see babies suck on their thumbs constantly; this is helping them with their digestion. There’s no need to squeeze tightly, just hold onto the corresponding finger for a short amount of time and it will help with the symptom. It may be hard to understand how a simple touch of the hand can significantly relieve stress, but don’t let the simplicity stop you from trying Jin Shin Jyutsu for yourself.

B

alancing work, family and personal time often leads to one thing – stress! Stress, in turn, may lead to increased heart rate, headaches, sleeplessness or even addictions to things we go to for comfort. We know that stress is bad for our bodies yet finding time to relax seems nearly impossible, which can be even more stressful! Daniel Kane, NCTMB, LMT, understands the need for relaxation, which is why he is passionate about his Jin Shin Jyutsu practice. Aside from being one of the few practitioners in Reno, Daniel is among a small group who incorporate massage with Jin Shin Jyutsu. He is a nationally licensed massage therapist specializing in stress reduction and chronic pain relief. Daniel performs Jin Shin Jyutsu on himself at least five days a week. He first learned about Jin Shin Jyutsu from his wife who also practices in Reno. Although the competition in the area is limited, Daniel considers Jin Shin Jyutsu to be one of the many tools in his tool box. He encourages his patients to seek other healing treatments such as acupuncture and massage, and he supports the incorporation of Eastern and Western medicine into our lives. Daniel and his wife host two Jin Shin Jyutsu seminars a year. They bring in one of the only 19 authorized Jin Shin Jyutsu practitioners in the world to instruct a five-day class. Daniel has plans to begin teaching self-help Jin Shin Jyutsu classes every other month. He sees education as the key to empowering people to actively participate in their own health. Daniel is a naturally balanced, intuitive and compassionate person. In addition to spending time with his wife, three daughters and three grandchildren, Daniel’s passion is helping people reduce stress and pain in their life in order to achieve and maintain balance, and just relax!

GREEN LIVING

Learning More About

THE

Zero Waste

CONCEPT

By The Zero Waste Alliance

The Case for Zero Waste

Waste causes great loss of value and resources. Humans are the only species that create waste. We can learn to identify all types of waste and through their elimination, save money and achieve a more sustainable world.

Zero Waste – What is it all about? The visionary goal of Zero Waste expresses the need for a closed-loop industrial/societal system as suggested below. Waste is a sign of inefficiency. Our use of the term Zero Waste includes “Zero Solid Waste,” “Zero Hazardous Waste,” “Zero Toxics” and “Zero Emissions.”

Zero Waste, a visionary goal that strives for: • Zero waste of resources - 100% efficiency of energy, materials, and human resources • Zero solid waste • Zero hazardous waste • Zero emissions-to air, water or soil • Zero waste in production activities • Zero waste in administrative activities • Zero waste in product life cycle • Zero toxics

Resulting in: • Reduced risks to employees • Reduced risks to the environment • Reduced presence of toxics creates less hazardous waste • Closed loops for materials • Reduced costs A Zero Waste strategy leads us to look for inefficiencies in the use of materials, energy and human resources. To achieve a sustainable future, extreme efficiency in the use of all resources will be required in order to meet the needs of all of the earth’s inhabitants. A Zero Waste strategy directly supports this requirement.

Zero waste is broadly applicable: The benefits of a Zero Waste strategy can be achieved in nearly any kind of organization. Some examples are: • Community programs can be designed to consider all uses of materials and energy both in operations and services. May 2008

10

Focus on zero solid waste to landfills and zero wasted energy can result in new jobs not only in the recovery process, but also in the use of recovered waste products as raw materials to produce new products. • Business programs can be designed to uses of energy and materials in products, processes and services. Focus on increasing efficiency by eliminating solid and hazardous waste, process wastes, wastes in production operations (motion, time, over production, misprinted invoices, etc.) and striving for energy reduction. • Industry-wide programs can be very effective if the industry members are willing to work together. As such, it reaches its maximum effectiveness in reducing energy and material use and achieving environmental improvements. • School programs when applied to all school activities and classroom teaching can save money while providing important education to help the younger generation be prepared to contend with coming changes. Zero waste can be applied not only to energy and material use, but also in the facilities plant, offices, classrooms and cafeteria. • Home programs can be developed that include energy savings, changes in purchasing habits, reduction in the toxicity of cleaning agents, use of more appropriate fertilizers and pesticides. This can help provide badly needed education for the general population. For more info, visit http://www.zerowaste.org/index.htm or call 503-279-9383.

The Joy of Being You By Tonda Adams, JD, CCHT

I

n librariess, bookstores, the internet and just about any other place that makes information available, one can find piece upon piece, book upon book, on the subject of living in the present moment. Down through the ages, spiritual leaders and scholars alike have spoken and written much on this topic, and yet, we humans have continued to live between our two ears, in the world of pain and suffering. Why is this? Is there a solution?

We all have this one essential truth in common…. The only time any of us have to experience life, as we know it, who we truly are, is right this moment…for that is all there is. The purpose of the mind is to create an identity (ego). This is done simply through the illusion of separation (thoughts, notions, images, labels, words, judgments, this over that). To the degree that we identify with the mind (ego), as in, that’s who we are, is the degree that we experience separation and enter the world of lack, pain, suffering and destructiveness. This does not have to be. The mind is a superb instrument when used properly or correctly. So how do we avoid living in the poverty of our own mind? There is only one way to free yourself from your mind – by living in the present moment. Easy to say, but how? To the ego, the present moment hardly exists. It is always concerned with keeping the past alive, because without it, who are you if not your stories? It constantly

projects itself into the future to ensure its continued survival (remember the ego is terrified of death) hoping to find some kind of release or ultimate fulfillment. You cannot find the present moment as long as you are your mind. An ancient writing states: “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; Watch your words, they become your actions; Watch your actions, they become your habits; Watch your habits, they become your character; Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.”

you are doing. When you are walking, pay close attention to your body’s motion, your breathing. Embrace the wonderful act of washing your hands with the sense perceptions kicked in…sight, hearing, smell, feel. And when you eat, allow yourself to slow down, to taste and savor the experience of this fulfilling activity. …”For me there is only the traveling on the paths that have heart, on any path that may have a heart. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge for me is to transverse it’s full length…looking, looking, breathlessly.” –Carlos Castaneda There is one certain test by which you can measure the value of your success in this practice: the degree of peace you will feel, and with peace, comes joy, the Joy of Being You. References: 1. The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle 2. The “I Am” Discourses, by Godfrey Ray King 3. Hypnotic Realities, by Erickson, Rossi & Rossi

During a hypnotherapy session, it’s not uncommon for a client to discover that they have thoughts and that they are not their thoughts. When directed to watch while observing their thoughts, the question is asked, “Who’s doing the observing?” The experience of the ‘observer becoming the observed’ quietly and gently opens the awareness of the space between your thoughts, between the breathe, that which you are, stillness and peace. In our everyday life, we can make it a practice to develop the capacity to enjoy the simple pleasures of life…seeing, hearing, touching, feeling, breathing, etc. without thought, without judgment. When you do a routine activity, give it your fullest attention by noticing (watching) what May 2008

Jungian Dreamwork Series:

The Shadow By Andy Drymalski, EdD

I

n last month’s article we discussed the persona. The persona is our “public face,” the role that we play in social settings and society at large. The persona shines a light on those aspects of our personality that we want to be associated with. For example, if your conscious identity is that of an “entrepreneur,” your persona might project an air of confidence, worldliness, and financial savvy. But, like the umbra of the earth on the face of the moon during an eclipse, the persona casts a net of darkness over what lies behind it. Carl Jung aptly named this hidden and mostly unconscious dimension of the psyche the shadow. The relationship between our persona and our shadow tends to be reciprocal. The more rigid, embellished, or one-sided the persona, the larger the shadow it casts upon the remainder of the personality. (This dynamic is illustrated in the story, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.) The shadow is the reservoir of our rejected, neglected and disavowed self. It is our awkwardness, “retardedness,” and immaturity (our “Borat-ness”). It is our greed, lust, and thirst for power. It can be the emotion, such as anger or love, that we refuse to acknowledge and stand up for. Sometimes it is the ancestral ape that rattles the cage of our overly rational, “civilized” mind. It can also be the child we once were, but have lost touch with; the inner artist, musician, dancer, writer, explorer, healer, hippie, student, bum, comedian, warrior, etc. that we have locked in the “Not Me” dungeon of our unconscious. Jung put it simply when he said that the shadow is who we are, but refuse to be. In our May 2008

12

dreams the shadow is generally symbolized by a dream figure the same gender as the dreamer. A woman dreams, “I want to take a nap, and my sister-in-law lies down practically on top of me. I’m really annoyed she’s even come in, and try to push her away. She ends up kicking me in the forehead with the pointed toe of her high-heeled shoe.” The ego likes to think that it is the center and entirety of the personality; this is our egocentricity. When it comes face-to-face with the shadow, it typically tries to deflect the intrusion and banish the shadow back to the unconscious. This is symbolized in the dream by the dreamer’s desire to take a nap–she wants to be unconscious of something. But the shadow, symbolized by her sister-in-law, will have none of this and forces a confrontation. What is it that the dreamer does not want to see? Her association to her sister-in-law was that her sister-in-law was a very superficial person. Through the dream her psyche is challenging her to take a close look at her own superficiality, to see her sister-in-law in herself. This is a painful and disagreeable task, well symbolized by a high-heeled shoe (in this context, probably a symbol of her elevated/superior attitude in relation to others) striking her forehead, the site of the “third eye,” or “eye of knowledge.” Jung once stated that “the shadow is ninety percent pure gold.” By this he meant that much of what we have rejected in our own nature can be a great asset to us if properly developed and integrated. The emotion of anger is an example. If the awareness and expression of anger has been excluded by your persona–perhaps as part of the way you were raised–it remains undeveloped. It tends to surface at the wrong time, or to the wrong degree, or, perhaps worse, it does not surface at all. Its continued repression might cause you to develop panic attacks or depression, digestion problems, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, etc. Your dreams might become populated with angry people, monsters, or even a vampire, for your repressed anger is sucking the life out of you. On the other hand, if you are on good terms with anger, you are able to experience and express it as it arises, and without undue stress or drama. You are more willing to stand up for yourself, and your anger can help provide you with the energy and motivation to make necessary changes in your life. It is helpful to understand that many of the negative qualities attributed to the shadow derive less from its inherent nature, and more from the rejecting attitude we have directed towards it. The shadow’s influence upon our lives, whether positive or negative, depends greatly upon our willingness to recognize and make peace with it. A man dreams, “I am in a house where a lot of partying and sex have been going on. I realize that I can no longer live there www.HBMag.com

and want to leave. When the guy whose party it is finds out I want to leave, I get scared. He doesn’t like it when people try to leave. I pretend to enjoy smoking pot to fool him, but it’s making me terribly ill. Not all aspects of the shadow have a nugget of gold at their core. Some are frankly destructive and feed like a fungus upon the healthier fabric of the psyche. The young man in this dream has come face-to-face with this destructive dimension of his own personality. His road to recovery will be challenged not only by external pressures, but by the resistance of the rogue government that has been ruling his soul. In addition to our dreams, another important way that our shadow is made known to us is through the process of projection. Projection occurs when we perceive attributes of our own personality as present in other people, rather than in ourselves. For example, the woman in the dream above projected her own superficiality onto her sister-in-law. Her dream challenged her to withdraw this projection by finding its prior origin within herself. A good clue that you are projecting some aspect of your own unconscious onto another person, is when their behavior triggers an abnormally strong reaction in you–a reaction not experienced by those around you. When we encounter in someone a positive but undeveloped aspect of our personality, we tend to highly esteem them. When we encounter a negative but unconscious aspect of our own personality, we tend to dislike and devalue that person. A good portion of all marriages originate through the projection of two people’s souls upon each other. (And a good portion of divorces from the projection of their negative shadow.) Dealing with our shadow can be painful, humbling work. It takes moral courage to face and take ownership of our “lesser self. But the gifts that accrue from our efforts benefit not only ourselves, but those around us, and the world at large. The persona and shadow are not just elements of an individual’s psychology, but of groups as well. Every nation and culture, every political party, church, organization, business, and family has a persona and a shadow. They identify with the former and deny the latter, which they then project upon some other

group. Divisiveness and polarization between countries, or between the people of one country, relies heavily upon the process of projection of the shadow. Jung wryly observed that “the center of all iniquity is invariably found to lie a few miles behind the enemy lines. Through projection, the world becomes the “acting-out-ground of so many blind egos with their disowned and angry shadows. To the extent that we are ignorant of our own shadow, we are easy marks for these unconscious, collective forces. We are less susceptible to such forces when we have faced our own dark side, know some of its ways, and have earned a portion of humility. In next month’s article we will examine the anima and animus. References: 1. Conger, John P. Jung and Reich: The Body as Shadow. Berkeley, CA: North Atlantic Books, 1988. 2. Jung, Carl G., Editor. just a noise problem?

FAMILY

HEALTH

SNORING

By Dr. Scot Bennick

W

e all have lost sleep due to someone else’s loud snoring at some point in our lives. Snoring can be more than just a noise problem though. This nighttime annoyance may indicate a serious health condition; sleep apnea, a condition where people stop breathing during the night. Snoring also complicates many other health issues, can disrupt your household, and strains relationships. To no one’s surprise, middle-aged and older men make up the largest group of run-of-the-mill snorers. But snoring is more common than most people realize (or want to admit)—30% of adults over the age of 30 snore—and women make up one-third of those snorers. According to the National Sleep Foundation, snoring affects about 90 million adults, 37 million of them on a regular basis. And while men are twice as likely as women to snore among younger folk, that gap closes after menopause, when women snore in equal numbers. Habitual snoring may be more than just a nuisance and a cause of daytime sleepiness. Untreated, persistent snoring caused by obstructive sleep apnea may increase your lifetime risk of developing health problems such as high blood pressure, heart failure, obesity, and stroke. In children, obstructive sleep apnea may indicate an increased risk of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

May 2008

14

Snoring in children (or anyone for that matter) should never be ignored as just a noise problem. In fact, children who snore are 2 and a half times more likely to be in the bottom 25% of their class! The child’s disordered breathing – and disrupted sleep – associated with snoring can lead to ADHD, asthma, allergies, behavioral problems, low blood oxygen (hypoxia), learning problems, bedwetting, or failure to thrive, as well as aggression. And because these problems can adversely affect academic performance, snoring can be considered a serious threat to a child’s intellectual potential! We all know that we breathe to get oxygen in our blood. What some people don’t know is that snoring can lead to lowered blood oxygen, a condition known as hypoxia. Snoring occurs when air flows past relaxed tissues in your throat, causing them to vibrate as you breathe, creating hoarse or harsh sounds. The resulting “upper airway turbulence” actually leads to lowered blood oxygen levels in many snorers, a potentially dangerous condition when severe and prolonged. References: 1. HEALTHY GARDEN

I

f you don’t have the space or time to have a garden in the earth, you still can grow a significant amount of healthy, tasty food in containers. Not only is it possible, but it’s fun and fairly easy to grow virtually anything grown in a conventional garden. Any sunny spot will do, whether it’s in your yard, on your patio, deck or balcony, or even inside your home or apartment. In some ways, gardening in a container is easier than gardening in the ground. Container-grown vegetable plants have slightly smaller yields than plants grown in the ground, but there are fewer, if any, weeds. Some pests are less likely to be a problem, because your container garden is in a location that pests don’t expect to find food. Diseases also are easier to avoid, because your potting soil is less apt to harbor them than ground soil. You need few tools beyond a trowel, and you don’t need to cultivate the soil. Containers, at least the smaller ones, can be moved around and brought indoors when frost threatens.

CONTAINER

CULTIVATION By Ed Smith

There are two container options. The first is traditional containers, which consist of anything that can hold some soil and has a hole in the bottom to drain excess water. The second option is selfwatering containers, which arrived on the market a few years ago. They have a reservoir for water that is connected to the soil in the rest of the container, which ensures that the water is continually available to the growing plants. As long as there’s water in the reservoir, soil throughout the container is evenly moist. For vegetable plants, most of which are larger than the flowers typically grown in containers, a suitable container can be either a large flower pot, or something originally meant for some other use: an old wash tub; a pail; half of a whiskey or wine barrel; or a plastic bucket that once held doughnut filling. And because they can be recycled objects, traditional containers often are inexpensive or free. (Just avoid containers that previously held chemicals.) Choose a container large enough for the plant you want to grow – the bigger the plant, the bigger the pot. A large tomato plant needs about 30 to 40 quarts of soil; a pepper or eggplant can make do with 15 to 20. For most plants, your container garden site must have full sun. (You can get away with partial shade for spinach, lettuce, bok choy and other leafy greens.) Soil 8 inches deep satisfies most plants, May 2008

16

and 5 or 6 inches is enough for salad greens, but carrots need 12 inches. If you use traditional containers, plan to water at least once a day, and more often for large plants or during hot, dry or windy weather. On the other hand, self-watering containers need water every three or four days, but younger, smaller plants get by with water once a week. Reservoirs need to be big enough to allow at least three or four days between waterings. Try for at least 1 quart of water for every 8 quarts of soil, but more is better. Use soil that’s a 50-50 mix of good compost and sphagnum peat-based potting soil. If you have any doubts about the compost quality, add about a cup of balanced organic fertilizer per 40 quarts of soil mix. A good fertilizer blend: one-third cup each of green sand, rock phosphate or bone meal and a nitrogen source such as alfalfa or soybean meal. Self-watering containers are available from the suppliers listed below, or you can make your own from a couple of 5-gallon plastic buckets:

Materials: 2 5-gallon plastic buckets 1 plastic funnel (from hardware or home supply stores)

Tools: Drill with a quarter-inch bit Saber saw

1. Fit one bucket inside the other bucket. The space between the respective bucket bottoms is the reservoir. 2. Mark an oblong hole in the side of the outer bucket about an inch high and 2 inches long, so the top of the hole is even with the bottom of the inner bucket. Cut it out with the saber saw. This hole serves triple-duty as the fill hole, the overflow

www.HBMag.com

hole and the place to stick a finger to gauge how full the reservoir is.

3. Cut a hole in the bottom of the inner bucket large enough so the funnel will project into the reservoir all the way to the bottom. 4. If necessary, cut the bottom off the fun-

nel so it is about a half inch longer than the space between the bucket bottoms.

5. Drill a dozen or so holes at random in

the bottom of the inner bucket.

6. Fit the inner bucket into the outer bucket; insert the funnel. Fill the top bucket with moist container soil, making sure that the funnel is filled, but not packed with soil. Fill the reservoir, and you’re ready to plant! 7. There is a kit available for $15 at Gardener’s Supply (www.gardeners.com) that can be inserted into any fairly large (15 to 20 quarts or more) round container. The result is a self-watering container with a 4-quart reservoir. Be sure to make an overflow hole in the container if it doesn’t already have one. MEDITATION & REFLECTION

Meditation is Not What You Expect By Ace Remas

Of course, all of these things will happen to you even if you don’t meditate. Looked at in this way, what is all the fuss about? Nothing on the outside is changed just because a person meditates.

M

editation is not what you expect. It brings no outer benefits. You will fail at your first attempts. Adding meditation to your full schedule appears to complicate life, not make it simpler. You have enough to do already without sitting down and doing nothing. Though you sense that meditation offers an important potential, you will not be able to explain why it is important, either to yourself or to someone else. But you are attracted to it because meditation has a good reputation. People you admire practice it. Nowhere can you find a polemic condemning it or revealing its dangers. The prescription to meditate comes without warnings on the label. People you know who don’t

meditate say that they want to. There is a prodigious library of resources declaring its universal benefits. It costs hardly anything, if at all. The time it takes is such a small part of your day there is no significant commitment to make. You can be casual about it, not serious. There’s nothing to buy, nowhere to go, and nothing to do. Nothing of your true self will be revealed to you, either in all its glory or all its horror. No angels will alight on your shoulders. No devils will whisper sinister inducements in your ear. Tomorrow the sun will rise. The tides will ebb and flow. Taxes will be due. The price of gasoline won’t go down. You’ll get no inheritance from a long lost relative. Everything in your life will be as it was be-

fore. You won’t suddenly become wiser and kinder than you are now. Rude people will still irritate you. Your worries will return to haunt your thoughts. The small joys of your life and loves will enlighten you from time to time. Even as a devoted meditator, the years will pass, you’ll grow old and weak, and then you’ll die.

Exactly. Meditation is about the inside. The reason any of us have a thought about meditation is because we feel some absence or lack on the inside, no matter how full our life is on the outside. A life constantly devoted to the outside is tiring. It makes us feel empty and restless. We suspect there is more to life than the next meal, paycheck, movie, or partner. Somewhere in this busy mess is me; I just have to find it to be happy, we think. Most of the time we presume we are finding me in the clutter of our lives. We focus on what we like, thinking our tastes and inclinations define us. But we can’t continue in this way because over time this tendency grows stale, even ugly, and we don’t want to find that kind of me. We may think we will find ourselves in our work, art, hobbies, skill, or relationships. But even these worthy endeavors become shallow and false. In the end, after all of life’s detours, after all its thrills and chills, after exploring all the outer nooks and crannies of our life, we may long to know really what we’re made of when it becomes obvious that our outer world does not define us. Looking outside in our external activities does not reveal who we are in the inside. So we need to look there. This is the reason to meditate. Simply, quietly, without fanfare or too much outer resolve, we close our eyes, sit in a quiet place, relax the body, and just take a peek inside. There we are—whatever we are. And it is completely unexpected, what we find. For more info, call Ace Remas at 415-7607300. Find ad on page 58.

BAD SODA?

High Fructose Corn Syrup & Metabolism By Christine Pinney Karkow

W

e see the ingredients “High Fructose Corn Syrup” in a wide array of processed food products today, from breakfast cereal to pre-made, packaged cookies and the most HFCS intensive product of them all, soda. In the 1980’s, Coca Cola and Pepsi both changed their formulas from a 50% mix of sucrose and corn syrup to a 100% solution of High-Fructose Corn Syrup. A corresponding, alarming rise of the obesity rate in the US over that same time period might be coincidental, but still

compelling enough for us to take a closer look at this manufactured sweetener. High Fructose Corn Syrup is a manufactured sweetener using corn starches as its raw material. Through a process using enzymes, the long chains of corn starch polymers are broken down into fructose molecules. The resulting fructose-laden solution is then mixed with a regular corn syrup, which is mostly glucose, (in most solutions destined for soft drinks, the mixture is 55% fructose to 45% glucose) to create a powerful, yet cheap, sweetening agent that we know as High Fructose Corn Syrup. Whether or not HFCS is more harmful than other sugar solutions is the subject of much debate. On one side are those who state that HCFS is metabolized differently than sucrose and other sugars. These hypotheses submit that while glucose, the simplest sugar, is metabolized in the cells, fructose is metabolized only in the liver. The hepatic metabolic process doesn’t cause the body to produce insulin and leptin, two hormones that are responsible for appetite control. Thus, our bodies don’t sense that we have ingested a large number of calories. More extreme hypotheses point out increased production of fats by the liver breakdown process, which can in turn cause the pancreas to decrease insulin production which eventually can lead to diabetes.

May 2008

20

On the other side of the HFCS debate are those who state that the difference in the amount of fructose to glucose ratio in HFCS compared to the older, more glucose-heavy sucrose syrup is negligible, and that all of the speculation about drastic reductions in appetite-regulating hormones insulin and leptin production have not been proven to be any worse than any other type of sugar in liquid form. One thing that both sides DO agree on however is that any type of sugar in liquid form is to be avoided, for it supplies nothing but abundant empty calories and it does not fill you up the same way that sugar in solid form does. If you are trying to lose a few pounds, and you partake in daily servings of soda, you would be welladvised to trade your soda for water. If you do so, you could eliminate 300-plus EMPTY calories per day over the course of 11 days. This would reduce your caloric intake by approximately 3,300 calories – roughly the number of calories you need to cut out to lose a pound, every 10-11 days! The World’s

Oldest Source of

POLLUTION! By Scott W. Albrecht, IAQS, AOS, CMI, NTP

W

hen Adam and Eve took up wearing fig leaves in the Garden of Eden, the clothing industry was born. And although a paradise, life in the Garden wasn’t always clean. Adam and Eve’s new clothes eventually soiled from dirt, sweat, grass stains and sadly - fruit juice. So it follows that doing laundry may be the world’s oldest household chore. Today, residential laundry cleaning is perhaps the greatest source of pollution to our water supplies, rivers, streams, lakes and ground water. The laundry detergent industry has grown into a 6 billion dollar industry in the U.S. alone. How much laundry detergent is that? Here’s a visual picture: If you take the cost of a jumbo economy box of Tide detergent (as found on the internet) into $6,000,000,000 that translates into over 140,000,000 boxes. That’s enough to fill 126,000 semi-truck loads. Parked bumperto-bumper, that would fill I-5 from Vancouver to LA! Mix all that detergent with 26-30 gallons of hot water per washer load – that’s 333 billion gallons of dirty, polluted, chemically laden water coming out of our washing machines in North America each year. This chemical waste taxes water treatment plants and it wrecks havoc with septic systems. These chemicals get into our rivers – our streams – the ocean – our ground water. Some chemicals in detergent will take up to 10 years to break down. Add to this the hundreds of millions of laundry detergent boxes and plastic jugs that are thrown away, not even considering the exhaust emissions from all the trucks needed to get detergents to market, much less the manufacturing pollution. Whew! It’s enough to make you sick! We all try to make sure our clothes are clean, fresh, and soft but, ironically, the very detergents and softeners that we use to make our clothes “clean” may actually be leaving them worse off than they were before we put them in the wash. Most commercial laundry detergents, the common grocery store brands, are loaded with potentially toxic chemicals that could harm you, your family and the environment.

Improve Your

Cholesterol Levels

Naturally

By John Morgenthaler

B

y now you’ve probably heard about the recent study concerning the cholesterol-lowering drug Vytorin®. It showed that people with high genetic risk for heart disease were helped no more by Vytorin than people taking the statin drug Zocor®, one of Vytorin’s two ingredients. The embarrassment to Vytorin’s two joint manufacturers, Merck and Schering-Plough, was compounded by the fact that the study was completed in April 2006 but the negative results were not released for nearly two years. Why the delay? Well, Vytorin sales were about $2 billion during the same time period, but then big drug companies would never withhold negative information about their products just to increase their profits, now would they? Once again, the integrity of Big Pharma and the FDA is called into question and natural cholesterol-controlling alternatives like policosanol are overshadowed by the hoopla and hype. But in light of the Vytorin debate, you might do well to educate yourself a bit more on both the pros and cons of statin drugs, as well as the benefits of policosanol.

What is Policosanol? Policosanol is a complex of natural phytochemicals from sugar cane, whose main component is octacosanol. Policosanol has been studied extensively for the past 10 years and several human trials have been published in medical journals in North America and throughout the world. The majority of clinical trials on humans have clearly demonstrated that policosanol is a safe and effective approach to lowering cholesterol without side effects.

The studies on policosanol are extremely impressive—and you’ll see why. Most of them have been done in Cuba and since Cuban researchers are still working on getting the word out through scientific publications and peer-reviewed journals, policosanol is not well known in the U.S. Thus this information is a new addition to your cholesterol treatment options.

How Does Policosanol Work? Because of the way that statin drugs work, they all have significant dose-related toxicity. If they inhibit too much of the cholesterol-producing enzyme it can cause a variety of dangerous side effects. There is also growing concern among some scientists that statin drugs may have unknown long-term side effects due to their mechanism of action in lowering cholesterol. Amazingly, policosanol has shown itself to be as effective as statin drugs for many of varied beneficial effects WITHOUT showing any toxic effects. This is believed to be due to its different ways of helping control cholesterol levels. While statin drugs directly inhibit the cholesterol-producing enzyme, policosanol appears to regulate the production of the enzyme to lower, more favorable levels. Policosanol also enhances our body’s ability to remove and process LDL cholesterol from the blood and cells.

Policosanol has been proven safe! Unlike statins, which become increasingly toxic with higher doses, policosanol achieves its maximum effect at very low doses. Taking higher doses is neither more effective nor more toxic. In fact, policosanol has undergone unusually extensive testing as a dietary supplement to prove its safety. Animal toxicity studies, including a study on three generations of rats, testing doses up to 1500 times normal human dose (on the basis of body weight) have shown no negative effects on carcinogenesis, reproduction, growth, and development.

Stopping Cardiovascular Disease In Its Tracks One of the good things that can be said about statin therapy is its ability to slow down or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease. This is often seen independent of the reduction in blood cholesterol levels. Research on policosanol has provided evidence that it too can dramatically prevent, slow down, or even reverse the progression of cardiovascular disease.

Here are some highlights of the dozens of studies that have been published: A team of German scientists reviewed the literature on placebo-controlled lipidlowering studies using policosanol published in peer-reviewed journals as well as studies investigating its mechanism of action and its clinical pharmacology. This is what they found: At doses of 10 to 20 mg per day, policosanol lowers total cholesterol by 17% to 21% and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by 21% to 29% and raises high-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 8% to 15%.

Policosanol outperforms most cholesterol-lowering drugs. In fact, policosanol performed better than or equal to other cholesterollowering drugs, including Simvastatin, Pravastatin, Lovastatin, Probucol and Acipimox with fewer side effects. Daily doses of 10 mg of policosanol have been shown to be equally effective in lowering total or LDL cholesterol as the same dose of Simvastatin or Pravastatin.

NEGATIVE FEELINGS AFFECT YOUR HEALTH

By Sienna Marie Wise

What is Transformational Life Coaching? When life isn’t working for us, we respond in many different ways: we may withdraw, lash out, blame others, blame ourselves, get a divorce, change our job, feed our addictions, work harder. All of these behaviors—and more—work temporarily to help us avoid feeling our pain or hurt. But the suppressed pain is still there, eating away at us, controlling our lives, and stopping us from living abundantly and joyfully. Transformational Life Coaching is a partnership with a trained coach who will gently guide us through the process of feeling the pain, purging and releasing it, so we are free from it forever.

What is the purge & release process and how does it work? Purge and release is simply letting go of our feelings. When we think of an unpleasant situation in our life, we can feel the negative energy in our body. Now we can let go of that feeling. This opens up a space for deeper feelings to surface, which in turn can be released. Over time we can allow all our past hurts to come up and we can release them—without having to be re-traumatized by them. This is the road to transformation and true healing. As we go through the purge and release process, it’s like peeling away layers of an onion. We may think we’ve healed something in our life, but we may only have released a few of the layers. As long as we’re open to it, the remaining layers will surface.

What is negative energy? The pain or tightness you feel in your body (generally in the chest area or solar plexus) is simply negative energy. This energy is created by thoughts or beliefs charged with emotion. When you purge

and release this feeling, a layer of negative energy is gone, and the emotional charge is also gone.

Is the purge and release process hard to do? No. Purge and release is simple, but some people make it hard because they think it should be. Think about holding an object in your hand, then deciding to drop it. Purge and release happens just like that. You decide to let it go and it’s gone. Anyone can do it. Small children do it automatically.

When you let something go, is it gone for good? That layer, the one that came up, is gone. There are probably more layers; they are all related and they hook into each other. The outer layers always feel as bad as the inner layers. At first you might be afraid to re-experience your feelings, but as you practice purge and release it gets easier because you relax more and you resist less. As the layers dissipate, you’ll find that surprising things start to happen in your life.

Can you give me a practical example of how purge and release can help with everyday situations? One client was very resistant to cold calling, which was necessary to grow her business, so she decided to release as soon as she felt any resistance. She would simply focus on the feeling in her body and then let it go. After a few minutes, when the feeling was gone, she could easily pick up the phone and start making calls. When a person feels bad, they might exercise or do something else to help them feel good. Is this the same as the purge and release process? No. That’s ignoring the pain and stuffing it down again. Even “wholesome”

activities like reading and exercising can become addictions if we use them to get rid of our pain. The way to get rid of the negative energy for good is to recognize it (feel it in your body), accept it (don’t resist) and let it go.

What does a typical coaching session look like? Generally, coaches will start by discussing the events of the week. When the client discusses a “bad” event— something that upset or irritated him—the negative energy will come up. The coach may ask him if he would like to release it, and usually the answer is “yes.” The patient is encouraged to get comfortable, to close his eyes and relax into his heart. Then the coach may ask questions such as: “Are you willing to let go of the feeling?”; “If the energy had a voice, what would it say?”; “Can you send yourself/ this person some approval?” During this time, the client is communicating with the coach and silently doing the internal work. Questions are always in response to what a client says to his coach. This process may take just a few minutes or up to an hour; it’s complete when the client feels at peace with the issue.

Do I need to have a coach to use the purge and release process? You can purge and release on your own, but at first it helps to have someone guide you; the “trust muscle” is like any other muscle—it takes time to develop. Also a coach can take you much deeper, which means you’ll release more negative energy and heal faster. References: 1. www.seminarsthatinspire.com 2. Eckart Tolle, The Power of Now 3. C.G. Time to Enjoy The golden moments in the stream of life rush past us and we see nothing but sand; the angels come to visit us, and we only know them when they’re gone. ~George Eliot (1819-1890) Every day we are endowed with a fresh hourglass of 86,400 measured moments of possibility. Many are frittered to frivolity or plainly unfulfilled, while the majority are given up to the race of “getting things done.” It’s like we’re racing the clock to squeeze out some free time. That’s as fruitful as squeezing water out of a rock. Our over-pixilated and bombarded sensory systems are easily pulled into the productive agenda of the world around us. Americans historically struggle to keep free-time free. Status anxiety and insecurity around our future security drive the stressometer to full tilt. It’s important to see how much the messages of our capitalistic agenda coerce us to produce, strive, and accomplish, but not necessarily be fulfilled by these pursuits. The current expectation resonates like a battle cry, “my terms, in my time, the way I like it or I’m out of here,” which is a pretty tall order to fill. If we don’t slow down the speed of our life, how can meaningful possibilities discover us in a receptive state? The solution appears in bringing quality to the fleeting moments we do have. It literally only takes one second to stop everything and be grateful, yet doing this is one of our biggest challenges. I’ve come to see that taking time out, throwing a few moments of possibility back into possibility’s face – is extremely rewarding, and a somewhat radical political act these days. It’s not a waste, it’s a revolution. Reclaim the time in your life by tithing it to acts that don’t pressure it for productivity: meditate, breathe, and smile is one very good sequence. When we engage in new activities the experience of time feels more spacious. Utilize the equivalent of “traffic calming zones” throughout your days via chimes, post-its, and alarm clocks that return your focus to a spacious awareness. Break up daily routines creatively by making spontaneous choices. Take a different route to the places you frequent and randomly pay compliments to others. Don’t let time fly blindly or it will assuredly pass without a trace. A human life is precious and should be valued as a short-term treasured gift. I urge each of you to take some time to feel like there’s enough time and that all of your wants have been satisfied. If one is a human doing, outsourcing your experience for remedial accomplishment, your human being ultimately suffers. Aren’t we here on the planet to enjoy this miraculous opportunity? Where are your short circuits, energy vampires, blockages, and attachments to outcomes not congruent with your life? Make changes. You are the one you’ve been waiting for.

Obesity is characterized by (1) increased levels of insulin and (2) low human growth hormone (HGH) release. Insulin increases fat and carbohydrate storage while HGH stimulates lypolisis (fat-burning). Studies show that when there is a higher ratio of HGH to insulin, humans tend to be leaner. The combination of high insulin and low HGH increases the possibility of obesity. L-arginine is the main agent responsible for restoration and maintenance of HGH in humans.

Bee Venom

THERAPY: How a Sting Can Be So Good By Dr. Thomas S. Lee, NMD, APH

You’ll Feel The Difference.

Over time, farming communities noticed that bees seemed to care for their caretakers, who would live longer and less painfully than their unstung neighbors. Words of mouth through large families went to the ill and hurting, who began to visit beekeepers for a chance to feel better through their bee stings. This was practiced for thousands of years wherever people grew crops.

What is Bee Venom Therapy? Bee Venom Therapy (BVT) amplifies the interaction between the brain and an irritant in the skin. Everything else that could or should be going on at that point is amplified along with it. Biochemicals in the bee venom “shout” to the brain to “get the repair crew here right away and deal with these problems.” This works well in chronic disease where the brain has grown accustomed to constant pain and progressing weakness. Moments after the sting, we see the circulation improve, the skin warms up, and muscle reflexes quicken around the site of that sting for hours and sometimes days after a treatment. Before the days of needles and syringes, live bees were either put onto the skin to sting, or patients were put near beehives which were then aggravated to coax the bees out to sting. Recently, jars of bees were stored in a freezer and sent home with people to be pulled out while the chilled bees were slower, to warm up under a glass placed where the sting was intended to be. May 2008

28

Trying to use live bees in a doctor’s office doesn’t work well as therapy. Good entertainment, however, when you must team up in shooing escapees out of the office. Modern clinical protocols involve injecting an average bee’s load of venom into a patient’s skin at relevant acupuncture, neural therapy, or dermatome points to stimulate their body. When done at proper intervals, BVT has been proven to strengthen and normalize the nerve and vital forces passing through and around that point. These “stings” help people get stronger and feel better. Only honey bee venom that has been sterilized and dosed precisely for injection is used in therapy. Or, venom can be prepared as a lotion or ointment that meets federal regulatory standards for purity. The hive queen bee would laugh at these hygienic measures, but insect royalty doesn’t have to answer to a medical board. No treatment of venom goes deeper than the skin, or where a bee’s stinger can possibly reach. For those with dread of needles or no access to trained providers, effective bee venom ointments can be prescribed by licensed physicians who would train you in their safe use.

What is in Bee Venom? Bee venom contains at least 18 active substances. Mellitin, the most prevalent substance, is one of the most potent antiinflammatory agents known—100 times more potent than hydrocortisol. Adolapin is another strong anti-inflammatory that inhibits cyclooxygenase, one of the

www.HBMag.com

body’s most inflammatory enzymes. Many other specialized biochemicals are found in venom including Apamin, Compound X, Hyaluronidase, Phospholipase A2, Histamine, and Mast Cell Degranulating Protein (MCDP). These work to soften tissues and facilitate the flow of fluids. Also, there are measurable amounts of the neurotransmitters Dopamine, Norepinephrine, and Seratonin.

Does it Hurt? A little bit, yes, and it’s a little itchy afterwards.

What’s it Good For? Arthritis and other systemic inflammations. BVT can be useful in both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, helping both pain and swelling. Even systemic inflammations not related to joints, such as ulcerative colitis or even asthma, may warrant a trial of bee venom. The mechanism of action seems to be the stimulation of endogenous cortisol. Acute and chronic injuries. Bursitis, tendonitis, and other areas of injury with local inflammation can benefit from BVT. Jaw neck and head pain responds well, as does chronic back and neck pain. Scar tissue. Keloids and other scar tissues are broken down and softened by the hyaluronidase and other substances in the bee venom. These often respond by flattening out and fading in color. Internal scar tissue, such as adhesions from previous surgery, may respond to treatment over the area. Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Many thousands of patients with MS have sought out bee venom therapists and beekeepers. The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America awarded a grant to Dr. John Santilli to prepare the venom in extract form to study its effect on MS patients. The treatment is prolonged and not for the squeamish, but the common responses are increased stability, less fatigue, and fewer spasms.

Who Should Avoid BVT? People who are allergic to bees should certainly not consider BVT. Bee venom therapy is also not indicated for people who are heavily medicated for pain and inflammation, for current or recent users of steroids, and those unable or unwilling to inform themselves about how to make this therapy help them get better. Like any therapy, the results of BVT are not only related to the provider’s skill or the power of medicines used. The desire to heal and intention to understand and apply this method to heal is necessary for successful results. That said, some medicines and therapies are better than others. Used well in the right situations, this is one of the best we have available. But be aware that any shutdown of the pathways of inflammation and pain with a drug or a toxin will affect one’s ability to heal. Inflammation and pain are both critical and powerful aspects of the human immune system. Naturopathic physicians want to train up that immune system and strengthen its power, not shut it off. Evidently, so do common honeybees. References: 1. Beck, F. Bodog, MD. Bee Venom Therapy: Bee Venom, Its Nature, and Its Effect on Arthritic and Rheumatoid Conditions, 1935. ot all energy bars are created equal.

The best energy bars are free of preservatives, high fructose corn syrups, and hydrogenated oils, and more important, they provide your body with the energy it needs with natural ingredients. Isolated soy protein and organic whole grain oats supply protein and energy for your body. Whole grains are one of the most important keys to sustaining energy. Whole grains are made up of complex carbohydrates that are consist of long strands of simple sugars. Complex carbs are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple carbohydrates and

thus provide a gradual steady stream of energy throughout the day.. When complex carbs are broken down, glucose is produced. The pancreas then releases insulin which “mops up” the glucose and carries it to cells that need extra energy. Unlike complex carbs, simple carbohydrates are broken down quickly and tend to make your energy level spike and drop like a yo-yo. Aside from its energy benefits, the consumption of oats and fiber may also help to lower cholesterol, regulate bowel movements, and reduce the risk of colon cancer. TURN ON YOUR RADAR with Proper Thyroid Function By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

D

o you feel in the groove with your brain working perfectly, a 360 degree awareness of all that’s going on around you, anticipating others’ thoughts and responses, feeling fearless and comfortable in the moment? Are your hands and feet nice and warm, energy streaming through you, memory generating old information as well as recent recall, problem solving easy and exciting? And does your libido surge to the best levels of your recollection? If so, then the chances are that you have arrived at a good balance with your thyroid gland. This is your body’s radar, when your senses are wide open and penetrating. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck. It is the master-controller of your body’s metabolism, which is why its under-functioning causes so many different problems. Thyroid deficiency (underactivity, hypothyroidism) is a massive health problem, mostly undiagnosed and untreated. Low thyroid functioning results in many symptoms including low sex drive, depression, weakness, dry skin, lethargy, slow speech, edema (swelling) of the eyelids and face, sensation of cold, coarseness or loss of hair, skin pallor, memory impairment, constipation, hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid causing bloating and gas with failure to digest proteins and absorb minerals), weight gain, shortness of breath, swelling of the extremities, hoarseness or loss of voice, anorexia (loss of appetite), nervousness, heavy menstrual bleeding, heart palpitation, deafness, chest pain, morning stiffness or rheumatism, numbness and tingling of the fingers, apathy, listlessness, anemia and difficulty in conceiving. And in children, hypothyroidism is related to ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). Low thyroid functioning is very common in women after childbirth. The baby’s thyroid puts out antibodies against

the mother’s thyroid and causes it to under-function. This is one of the chief causes of postpartum (after childbirth) depression and weight gain. During pregnancy the pituitary (master gland in the brain) puts out large amounts of thyroid hormone which is needed for growth of the infant. It is fed by the placenta in the uterus during the pregnancy. After the baby is born the placenta is delivered and its drive to the pituitary stops, sometimes causing low thyroid levels. This then causes weight gain and depression. (“Gee Doc, I’ve never been the same since I had my babies.”) So, if mom is feeling tired, depressed, cold, dry, puffy, irritable, and overweight, I guarantee her libido isn’t going to be terrific. Of course men have thyroid problems, too. Exposure to heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic can create problems with libido. Selenium deficiency in both sexes can effect the way the body converts the thyroid hormone T4 to the metabolically active form of the hormone, T3. Iodine also is important for normal thyroid health in both sexes. When one first encounters the world of the thyroid gland and the extent to which it is underactive in such a large segment of our population, it is a staggering discovery. The regular thyroid blood tests may or may not detect hypothyroidism. Broad Barnes, MD, in his seminal book Hypothyroidism: The Unsuspected Illness, suggests using basal temperatures to diagnose the problem. One’s first morning underarm temperature should be 98 +/- 0.2 degrees. When taken over five days, if lower on average than 97.6 degrees, thyroid deficiency should be considered. Other diagnostic signs are a low “triple warmer” pulse in traditional Chinese medicine, absent Achilles’ tendon reflexes, swollen tongue, eye symptom, and other physical and psychological symptoms.

Thyroid hormone replacement is helpful in many people, especially the elderly. Some authors estimate as many as 70% of hospitalized elderly patients exhibit low thyroid states.

Menopause

Treatments Based On Your Body’s Individual Needs By Mark Gunderson, MD

What is Menopause? Menopause refers to that time in every woman’s life when menstruation ceases completely. The ovaries output of estrogen and progesterone diminishes severely. In addition to signifying the end of a woman’s ability to have children, changing hormonal levels affect the entire endocrine system. Menopause is considered complete when a woman has had no periods for a full year. This varies but is normally complete in the early fifties. The perimenopausal period is that period prior to menopause when hormonal levels may be declining which may start in the early thirties! In addition to diminished levels of estrogen and progesterone, testosterone levels are reduced during menopause and may be suboptimal during the perimenopausal period. It is considered within the normal range for 40 year old women to have a testosterone level of zero! Changing levels of hormones affect the entire endocrine system that controls growth, metabolism and reproduction. The diminution of hormone levels during menopause affects the breasts, vagina, bones, blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, and skin. Age Management Medicine (AMM) follows blood chemistries that include a complete blood count, lipid panel, comprehensive chemistry panel, urinalysis and a complete hormonal assessment including follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), total testosterone, thyroid panel including thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T-3, and free T-4, estradiol, progesterone, leutinizing hormone (LH), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) levels. In the past, traditional doctors tended to treat menopause rather than the person experiencing menopausal symptoms. Often, patients were treated without any hormone levels checked. Doctors routinely used fixed dosages of hormones such as Premarin taken orally and synthetic progesterone such as medroxyprogesterone. Premarin is a product of pregnant mares urine (hence the name) containing 30 plus horse estrogens. It is NOT bioidentical to human estrogens. Additionally, there is nothing natural about taking horse estrogens orally. The many known side effects can be diminished by using bioidentical hormones that present the hormone to the body that mimics the natural process. This can be done with transdermal preparations using natural and bioidentical molecules. The current controversy and bad outcomes that have been in the popular and scientific press regarding the Women’s Health Initiative on hormone replacement therapy has been detrimental for the health and quality of life for many women. Doctors are now reluctant to prescribe hormones for women. AMM and leaders in the anti-aging medical community believe that these studies have been flawed from the beginning. Additionally, pharmaceutical companies have traditionally not been interested in May 2008

36

producing natural, bioidentical hormones as these molecules are not able to be patented. Practitioners of Age Management Medicine believe that hormonal replacement can be beneficial to both the overall health of women and improve the quality of life by using bioidentical hormones and delivering them to avoid first passage through the liver-which occurs with oral preparations. Additionally, there are supplements such as indole-3carbinol that can lessen the known carcinogenic metabolic end-products of estrogen. AMM believes in using an estrogen mixture mimicking the normal levels of estradiol and estriol. The major component is estriol which is not carcinogenic. AMM physicians believe that rational hormone replacement therapy can be done without increasing the risk of cancer and heart disease beyond the normal baseline disease rates.

What effects can I expect from this bioidentical hormone replacement? • Hot flashes can be significantly reduced or eliminated. • The thinning and loss of elasticity of the vagina and urinary tract can be improved. Painful intercourse can be improved. • The loss of libido that is related to declining levels of testosterone can be helped as well as increasing energy and maintaining body composition. • There can be emotional changes that occur with menopause that can mimic depression that may be helped. • Osteoporosis (decrease in bone mineral density) is drastically accelerated after menopause and can be improved with hormone replacement and nutrition and weight bearing exercise. • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and may improve cholesterol ratios.

Progesterone in the Practice of Age Management Medicine Progesterone is the most underused essential hormone in female replacement programs. It is a natural diuretic-it can help eliminate bloating and excess fluid and puffiness. It is a natural anti-depressant. It helps with mood, sleep, bone growth and balances estrogen. It is probably a natural anti-cancer agent. Modern medicine only looks at progesterone protecting the uterus from estrogen induced cancer. In reality, progesterone has hundreds of functions in the human body. Estrogen and progesterone therapy must be balanced to ensure optimal health. Additionally, women need some testosterone as well for optimal health. Bone health, libido and weight gain can be improved with testosterone.

If you take a look at a typical bottle of laundry detergent, you’ll find that the ingredients are rather vague. One popular brand listed, for instance: *Cleaning agents (anionic and nonionic surfactants), *Buffering agent, *Stabilizer, *Brightening agent, *Fragrance From this list, it’s hard to tell what exactly is even in detergent, so we broke down some of the more common laundry ingredients out there. The short list includes: Linear alkyl sodium sulfonates (LAS), Petroleum distillates (aka napthas), Benzene, Phenols, nonyl phenol ethoxylate, Phosphates, Sodium hypochlorite (household bleach), EDTA (ethylene-diamino-tetra-acetate), and Artificial Fragrances. After Googling these and other components, you’ll discover a sobering amount of toxicity which can cause varying degrees of carcinogenic, reproductive, and allergic reactions. Ordinary laundry detergents could leave dangerous chemical residues that are left on your clothes and possibly absorbed by your skin or evaporated into the air where they could be breathed in. Do you want that danger touching your loved ones? Many people will remember a famous TV ad where a woman races to her washing machine, fabric softener in hand, only to arrive just as the wash ends. This woman who “forgot to add the fabric softener” was actually doing herself and her family a favor. Although they may make your clothes feel soft and smell fresh, fabric softener and dryer sheets are some of the most toxic products around. And chances are that the staggering 99.8 percent of Americans who use common commercial detergents, fabric softeners, bleaches, and stain removers would think twice if they knew they contained chemicals that could cause cancer and brain damage. Fabric softeners are made to stay in your clothing for long periods of time. As such, chemicals are slowly released either into the air for you to inhale or onto your skin for you to absorb. Dryer sheets are particularly noxious because they are heated in the dryer and the chemicals are released through dryer vents and out into the environment. Health effects from being exposed to the chemicals in fabric softeners include: central nervous system disorders, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, blood pressure reduction, irritation to skin, mucus membranes and respiratory tract, pancreatic cancer. Knowledge allows you to make the best decisions for your health, as well as your families. Watch future articles for information about alternatives to these traditional and toxic cleaning products.

Nutrient Delivery

Liquid vs. Solid

M

any people today know the importance of supplementing your diet with natural vitamins and minerals. Vitamins are essential chemicals that take part in the chemical reactions of the body, and allow the processes of life to occur. Vitamins are not the bricks that build the body, but the substances that allow the bricks to be made and that allow the body to function as an organism. Minerals are necessary for every biochemical process in the body and assist vitamins with their work. Without them there would be no human life making a regular intake of vitamins essential. Choosing the right ones, however, can be difficult. Moreover, supplements come in many forms: pills, capsule, powder and liquid. How do you know which form to take? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Is one form better than the others? The most popular forms of supplements are pills and capsules, probably due to taste and convenience. But are they in a convenient form for the body to be able use efficiently? To answer these questions, knowing exactly how these supplements work is very important. While there are people who favor each of these forms, experts generally agree that it is easier for the body to use vitamins in liquid form than in solid. There is also evidence that liquid forms have a much higher and faster absorption rate than pills and capsules. Liquid vitamins sidestep the digestion process and quickly reach the body’s blood stream and cells. This means that liquid vitamins and minerals work faster than pills, but do they work better? Reported absorption rates vary, though the latest studies indicate that around 98% of nutrients are absorbed from liquid vitamins, compared to 10-20% for vitamin pills.

One of the biggest concerns about the benefits of liquid vitamins is potency. Enzymes and other nutrients lose potency quickly in liquid form. Keeping containers tightly sealed and using promptly will only partially offset this concern. There are also liquid vitamin and mineral manufacturers who add water to their products, meaning that customers pay extra and do not get the full amount of nutrients they need. The effects of stomach acid on liquid vitamins is also a question. This effect occurs before the nutrients arrive at the top of the small intestine where best absorption takes place. Consequently, liquid nutrients pass through the body relatively quickly. How do we know that these nutrients have time to be fully absorbed? Pills and capsules, on the other hand, remain in the intestine for a much longer time. When you consume vitamins in pill form, they have to pass through the digestive process, which is why only a small percentage of nutrients are actually absorbed. Both pills and capsules contain many materials other than the nutrient itself. Tablets contain waxes, fillers and binders to enable the pill to be formed. They can also contain sugars and artificial flavors and colors to make them look and taste more attractive, as well as other substances to help them break apart after swallowing – a major drawback for digestion and breaking down constituents. This compression may mean that pills are packed too densely to allow absorption of all the vitamins. Capsules can also be too large for some people to swallow, and even the non-gelatin type of capsule may form a hard mass in the stomach, that can be indigestible. Gelatin capsules, of course, may have moral significance for vegans and vegetarians.

May 2008

38

Soluble or dispersible powders are an alternative to tablets and liquid supplements. The powder can be formulated to contain targeted doses of specific vitamins, and are an ideal adjunct for water-soluble vitamins. With liquids, however, the supplement can be taken in small doses throughout the day, which is usually preferable to an individual tablet dose. Both forms have advantages and disadvantages and it is not possible to say that any one particular form of vitamin is better than another. Things get even more complicated when we see that doctors still prefer to prescribe vitamins in pill form. However, no matter what form you prefer for yourself, one thing is certain – that natural vitamins and minerals are essential for the health, growth and maintenance of your body. The choice of liquid vs. tablet vitamins might be a personal one, or one that is imposed on the 20% of the population that cannot swallow pills. Bioavailability and the natural forms of the vitamins and minerals concerned should be considered. If you are in doubt, check out a reputable vitamin supplement source and find what recommendations are being made. Then you will be better able to make an informed decision that is best for you. Chronic Shoulder Pain? By Frank Shallenberger, MD, HMD

S

houlder pain comes in many different flavors. One kind is caused by an injury to what is called the rotator cuff. This refers to the muscles, ligaments, and tendons that surround the shoulder joint. A rotator cuff injury occurs when one or more of the parts of the rotator cuff are torn. It is much worse than a strained shoulder. A rotator cuff injury may require weeks to months to heal. In fact, many rotator cuff injuries never heal. They just leave the patient with chronic shoulder pain. Rotator cuff injuries can usually be diagnosed by a physical examination. To be really sure of the diagnosis, as well as the severity of the tear, doctors often order a magnetic resonance image (MRI) scan of the shoulder. The most common treatment for rotator cuff injuries is surgery. The surgeon will open the shoulder joint and repair the tear with needle and thread. The recovery time for this type of surgery is very long. It can easily be 3-6 months before the shoulder can be fully used again. Furthermore, during this time extensive physical therapy and shoulder rehabilitation are required. Fortunately, there’s another option.

Case Study Michael had damaged his right shoulder rotator cuff in a skiing accident. At first he thought it was a only a strain. But months of persistent, nagging pain made him realize that something else had happened. His doctor wisely suggested a trial of physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. But when Michael’s shoulder failed to respond, his doctor suggested surgery. The problem was that Michael was the CEO of a large entertainment corporation. He just didn’t have the time to be off work that long. Furthermore, because he did not need to use his shoulder at work, he felt that he could just live with the problem.

But living with it turned out to be harder than he bargained for. He found that it was impossible to get a good night’s sleep. Every time he would roll over, his shoulder would immediately wake him up. He found himself regularly taking pain pills before bed. And even though he did not need his shoulder at work, he found that his injury was still a problem. He couldn’t go skiing anymore. He couldn’t play ball with his grand children. He couldn’t even hug his wife without pain. And then while surfing the net for answers, he learned about Prolozone® therapy.

Prolozone Injections Prolozone Therapy is derived from the Latin word Aproli@ which means to regenerate or rebuild, and the word “ozone.” It is called Prolozone Therapy because the treatment uses localized injections of ozone to regenerate new tissue in areas where it has become damaged. Ozone has been used in medicine for over seventy years. It is a naturally occurring molecule that consists of three atoms of oxygen. Oxygen atoms usually combine in pairs, because they are much more stable that way. The third atom of oxygen present in ozone gives it a much greater capacity for inducing healing than any other naturally occurring substance. Prolozone therapy uses the power of oxygen to stimulate the body to heal itself. It is excellent for all forms of musculoskeletal and joint pain including chronic back and neck pain, arthritic hips and knees, degenerated discs, plantar fasciitis, and yes – rotator cuff injury.

Return to Case Study Michael was a very busy man. Normally, at least 3-4 Prolozone treatments are needed to fix a torn rotator cuff. Getting him to take the time to come in for even one treatment, much less several, was difficult. But he was really motivated. So he

May 2008

39

finally found the time to fly into Reno for the day just to “give it a try.” After his first treatment, Michael’s shoulder was immediately better. He was reassured that the injection was working, and that his body was already starting to heal his rotator cuff. He was so impressed he promised to return in two weeks for another injection. When Michael came to the clinic two weeks later, it was hard to erase the grin from his face. He reported that the pain was “at least 50% better.” It was the least pain he had felt for over three years, and he was very happy. The injection was repeated, and he scheduled another visit.

SPIRITUALITY QUESTIONS OF

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life •• Living the Wisdom of the Tao •• By Wayne Dyer, published by Hay House, June 2007 it, and then it becomes a lie. Why? Because the purposes of the organization begin to take precedence over that which it first attempted to keep in order.

19th Verse, Tao Te Ching

Give up sainthood, renounce wisdom, and it will be a hundred times better for everyone. Throw away morality and justice, and people will do the right thing. Throw away industry and profit, and there will be no thieves.

“Throw away morality and justice,” this verse urges, “and people will do the right thing.” Here, in the second of the outward forms, Lao-tzu reveals a legal system that takes precedence over your natural internal integrity. When you know that you emerged from an impeccable source of honor and equality, you don’t have to rely on a system of justice. Lao-tzu reminds you that it’s very important not to view yourself as relegated to an inferior position because laws of morality tell you who you “really” are. See yourself centered with the perfection of the Tao, which is your nature, rather than needing to consult a law book, a courtroom, or a judge to determine your ethical standing. These labyrinthine systems designed to determine all issues of right and wrong are evidence of our drift away from the simplicity of our inborn nature.

All of these are outward forms alone; they are not sufficient in themselves. It is more important to see the simplicity, to realize one’s true nature, to cast off selfishness and temper desire. ***

Living Without Attachment Upon first reading this 19th verse of the Tao Te Ching, it appears that Lao-tzu is encouraging us to abandon the highest principles of the Tao. Renounce sainthood, wisdom, morality, justice, industry, and profit, says the great sage, and all will be well. Lao-tzu tells us that “all of these are outward forms alone” and are insufficient for living according to the highest Way. The first of these categories represents education and the way you look at your sources of learning. This verse advises you to alter your concept of being saintly just because you follow the teachings of an organized religion, and to change your view of self-importance because of degrees you’ve received from an educational institution. Lao-tzu gently informs you that it’s far more valuable to cultivate your true nature. As with virtually all of the teachings of the Tao, the greatest trust is placed in your accessing the sacred Tao center of yourself. Within you lies a piece of God that instinctively knows what to do and how to be. Trust yourself, Lao-tzu advises, and reevaluate the ultimate importance of educational and religious institutions. When you modify how you see them, you’ll notice that the true essence of you is “a hundred times better for everyone.” Lao-tzu might say that a truth is a truth until you organize May 2008

40

The last of the outward forms is the whole world of business. “Renounce profit seeking, give up ingenuity, and discard record keeping, and thieves will disappear altogether,” could be one interpretation. Lao-tzu advises you to stay centered within the all-encompassing integrity of the Tao and to release your view of profits and monetary gain as indicators of your level of success. When you see your life through the perspective of the Tao teaching, you’ll have no need to hoard large sums of money. Instead, you’ll discover the pleasure of serving others in a spirit of endless generosity. Or, as this translation of the Tao Te Ching puts it, you’ll “cast off selfishness and temper desire.” These then are the three outward forms: education, justice, and business. You’re being encouraged to update how you see the reasons for, the methods used by, and the way you’ve been taught to value those arenas of life by well-meaning people. When you change how you see them, you’ll note the simplicity and sacredness of a higher principle, which will enrich those institutions with the free-flowing Tao. You’ll realize your own true nature, cast off selfishness, and temper your desire. Be in the world of education, justice, and business—but not of it—and you’ll see the inner world where you’re centered in the Tao. For more info about this book, visit www.hayhouse.com. Increase Productivity & Morale in Your Workplace By David Neeser

H

aving fun in the workplace is an important component of occupational wellness. While play can boost productivity and general wellness, a sterile, dull and play-free working environment can – and are likely to – lead to an increased turnover of staff. Overworked staff are likely to take time out to have fun anyway; so a savvy employer will understand the positive effect of play on its staff and seek to include specific periods in the working day for such activities. Many countries around the world understand the benefit of incorporating fun into the workplace. In some countries, health promotion boards offer grants to organizations, to encourage health, sports and physical therapy programs in the workplace. Asian and European countries have sponsored corporate sports teams for generations. In the US, the “dot com” companies seem to do the best job of making their workplace fun and productive. While fringe benefits aren’t always affordable, accessible or even realistic for most

companies, there are easy ways to make your workplace more fun without great cost or creating an unprofessional atmosphere. One of the biggest challenges of staff engaging in non-work activities, however, is that they may disturb other employees nearby who are trying to work. Organizations should consider separate lounge space where staff can switch off from work without impacting other employees. Companies looking for a more traditional way to inject fun into the office might want to consider teambuilding activities that can be held in the office facility or a nearby location. Not only will coworkers get a breather from their

May 2008

41

normal routine, they will learn more about each other and develop a healthy camaraderie. Organizing formal activities during staff breaks for employees is an option. Sports competitions, recreational activities, yoga, Pilates or fitness sessions can all help staff to let off steam and boost concentration levels. Formalizing such activities will not only encourage team building among staff, but will also reduce the potential to waste work time when employees are least productive. Remember also that many staff will only participate in organized activities when they have appropriate changing or shower facilities. Few people want to engage in physical activity in their work clothes and then sit in sweaty clothes in the office for the rest of the afternoon. In any case, a little workplace fun can go a long way to improve morale. It isn’t very difficult to make the workplace more fun, and you will certainly see results if you or your company make the effort to liven up the daily routine. THERMOGRAMS The New Mammogram By Martin E Stivers II, CPT, CLET

A

well-kept secret among the new diagnostic and screening technologies being developed almost every day is the Digital Infrared Imaging device, also known as DITI, Thermal Imager, Bio-Optic Scanner, and a multitude of other names. This easy to use, far reaching technology has been with us for over 30 years. In 1982 and again in 2005, the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) approved thermograms as adjunctive screening devices with mammograms, ultra-sound and other various radiological methods. The DITI technology actually allows the body to tell on itself. By measuring the surface body temperature with a highly sensitive thermal imaging device, a certified, trained medical specialist can determine anomalies below the surface of the skin. Such anomalies are usually related to inflammation, disease and/or vascular irregularities. It works like this. The body has built–in signals that react when a tumor is starting to grow (or exists) in the region of the breast. A by-product known as “Nitric-Oxide” is emitted when a cell is pre-cancerous. Nitric oxide continues to be produced after the tumor has developed, and causes the vascular system in the area of the growth to dilate (vaso-dilation), allowing for more blood to flow unrestricted. This shows up as a “hot” vascular pattern, different than normal vessels. While this is going on, another medical phenomenon happens, called “Neo-angiogenesis.” In simple terms it means that “new blood supply vessels” are formed and how the body responds to satisfy the growing demand by the tumor for more blood. The new veins are created without nerves and do not constrict (slow down blood flow) like regular veins do. Thermography uses the body’s own autonomic nervous system to trick the vascular blood flow into constricting (vaso-constriction) meaning less blood flow, less heat. This is called a “challenge.” The technician collects an image of the patient and then re-images the same area after the challenge to the autonomic system is made; this is done by immersing the hands in a coldwater bath for about 1 minute. Another medical specialist reviews the digitally captured images and with the aid of a computer program, can read in detail the individual temperatures anywhere on the imaged areas of the body. By comparing the first set of images (baseline images) to the second set of identical images (challenge images), a clear pattern of thermal signatures will be seen. The areas in the breast or breast area that show an increase in thermal heat or that have remained the same temperature,

become red flags and are examined very closely. This is followed by a review of the temperatures from known points on the breast, the tail of the breast, and the underarm region, from which a comprehensive report is compiled and reviewed by a medical doctor. A recommendation is then made based on the final thermal rating of the patient in relation to the probable risk of tumors or breast disease being present. If problems are demonstrated, a secondary confirmation from an independent source is always recommended. Because your body has the ability to provide thermal proof of the condition of the vascular system in and around the breast, this easy, safe and highly accurate method of breast screening is a clear and viable alternative to the mammogram. Moreover, because this is a physiological screening and not an anatomical exam, the possibility of early detection is much greater since the spin off of nitric oxide begins in the pre-cancerous stage, and it is temperature sensitive. The “angiogenesis” begins once the cells have mutated and are forming, but still very small; this also can be measured by its distinct temperature pattern very early. This makes the use of Thermograms one of the earliest possible forms of tumor detection available to the vast majority of women and the few rare men. It’s never too soon for a woman to begin to pay attention to her breast health. Waiting until age 40 or older can be an unnecessary gamble with your life. Thermograms work as well on twenty, thirty and forty year olds and through the fifties, sixties and seventies. Size and shape of breast make no difference in the results of the imaging. This very beneficial method of medical screening for breast health is worth finding out about. References: 1. Jones, C.H. Thermography of the Female Breast. In Parsons, C.A. hat in the world is a doula?

If you’re pregnant, this is a woman you need to get to know. Giving birth is one of the most life changing and miraculous events in a woman’s life, but it is also one of the most difficult and grueling events as well. Each woman enters the process of birth with desires as to how her baby will enter the world and there is someone who can help you in your attempt to have the birth you desire– a doula. A doula is a woman who provides continuous physical and/ or emotional support during labor and delivery, even postpartum in many cases. Doulas are often childbirth educators and are knowledgeable about labor, birth, comfort measures, and are experts at supporting and nurturing a pregnant woman and her family. Doulas are certified by several agencies and usually develop a relationship with the family prior to the birth. So what can a doula do for you? The memories of your labor and birth will be with you for the rest of your life, and their impact, whether positive or negative, should not be underestimated. Numerous studies conducted in several different countries describe the effects of doula support during labor. Women with doula support were less likely to have a c-section, anesthesia or analgesia, forceps or vacuum deliveries and were less likely to get an episiotomy. Women with doulas are also less likely to view their birth experiences negatively, had shorter, more manageable labors (2-6 hours shorter depending on the study) and are more successful when breastfeeding. Dr. Kennell, a physician and leading labor support researcher said it best, “If a doula were a drug it would be unethical not to use it”. The roles of a doula vary depending on the wishes and needs of the mother or couple who hires her. Doulas have completed a course and have experience that has taught them how to provide continuous, physical, emotional, and mental support for the woman and her partner. They come equipped with the knowledge that every woman and every birth is different and they respect the power and strength of the birthing woman. They are educated in the process of labor, understand interventions, and can help when labor may not be progressing or variations occur. It is their desire to do everything possible to encourage mothers to trust their bodies and help decrease any labor related fears. Doulas act only as a support system to the woman and her family. They are not midwives (educated and trained maternity care providers) and do not perform any clinical tasks. Postpartum doulas provide support and assistance after the baby is born to help the family transition to their new roles. They can aid in feeding and baby care, fixing meals, household chores and giving new parents much needed breaks.

May 2008

Some couples express concern as to whether or not the doula would take the place of the partner who wants to share the experience with the mother. In actuality, a doula will allow the mother’s partner to experience this amazing time with confidence. By providing information, giving suggestions for positions and comfort techniques and taking over if needed, the doula enables the partner to keep an intimate connection with the mother, or time to get away if they are overwhelmed. Staying objective when a loved one is in pain, tired or faced with tough decisions can be extremely difficult. Asking a first-time father/ partner to provide sole support in labor has been compared to asking someone to coach a sport they have never seen. So whether you have an amazing partner to support you or no support at all, a doula can provide information to navigate the many choices involved in childbirth, provide ideas and options for making labor more comfortable and helping it progress, and can provide support and nurturing for childbearing woman and her family. There are a few great doulas in this area and you can find those that are certified through several agencies. ALACE, DONA and ICEA are three organizations that certify doulas and can point you in the right direction through their internet sites. References: 1. Make sure your dog knows the basic commands such as sit, stay, no, lay down etc. If he doesn’t, now is a good time to teach them. The introduction process will be a lot easier if one of the subjects will listen to you. Even if your dog already knows commands, work on obeying commands in return for a treat.

Confine the new cat to one medium-sized room with its litter box, food, water, and a bed. Feed the dog and the newcomer near either side of the CLOSED door to this room. Place the food far enough way from the door so that the animals will eat without being upset by each other’s presence. This will help to start things out on the right foot (paw) by associating something enjoyable (eating). Gradually move the dishes closer to the door until the animals can eat calmly, directly on either side of the CLOSED door. Next, use two doorstops to

prop the door open just enough to allow the animals to see each other, and repeat the whole process. After the animals have become comfortable eating on either side of the door, and have been exposed to each other’s scents as stated above, you can attempt a face to face introduction in a controlled manner. Put your dog’s leash on, and tell him to either sit or down and stay, using healthy treats. Have someone else come into the same room and place kitty on their lap. The cat should also be offered some healthy treats. At first, the cat and dog should be on OPPOSITE sides of the room. Repeat this step several times until both the cat and dog are tolerating each other without fear, aggression, or other uncontrollable behavior. Long sleeve shirts are recommended.

3.

4.

Next, move the animals a little closer together, with the dog still on leash and the cat gently held in a lap. If the cat does not like to be held, you can use a crate or carrier instead. If the dog gets up from the “stay” position, it should be firmly repositioned, and praised and rewarded for obeying the “stay” command. If the cat becomes frightened, increase the distance between the animals and progress more slowly. Eventually, the animals should be brought close enough together to allow them to investigate each other.

Take a Stand Your Health!

TURN ON YOUR RADAR

FOR

with Proper Thyroid Function By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

Continued from page 35. Most important for your sexual health, you must have adequate thyroid function to absorb minerals like zinc, which is critical for sexual functioning, and for the absorption of proteins and amino acids such as arginine, which creates nitric oxide (aka Viagra) for good erections and strong prostatic and vaginal orgasms. Replacement of thyroid hormone, like all natural hormone replacement, is a bit of an art. Natural porcine thyroid is very similar to human thyroid and contains all three thyroid hormones, T2, T3 and T4. T3 is the active hormone at the cellular level in our body. The gland also contains iodine and the three thyroid hormones attached to the protein carriers which deliver it to the tissues, thyroid-binding globulin, and the thyroid prealbumin. Some doctors argue that because of seasonal variations in light and food supply there may be fluctuations in the strength of the natural porcine hormone, but it has been standardized by T4 for at least 30 years. Synthetic T4 (Thyroxin) is less complete and is often more difficult to deal with, plus it contains chemicals and dyes. Recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine support the use of both T3 and T4 for better clinical results. The dosage of thyroid is very individual. Too much thyroid or too much too soon can cause anger, nervousness, fast heart rate, or angina in patients with obstructed arteries, and insomnia. The coffee rule of thumb is a good one to follow. If you can drink several cups of coffee without becoming extremely nervous or jittery then you probably can handle modest doses of thyroid. If you can’t handle any coffee, you must begin with very small amounts of thyroid (1/8 grain) and increase very gradually with adrenal gland support such as adrenal extracts, vitamin C, B vitamins with extra

B5 (pantothenic acid), adequate protein intake and calcium and magnesium supplementation. It is important to find doctors who use this approach for prescribing thyroid. The typical general practitioner, internist, or endocrinologist will usually not prescribe thyroid based on signs and symptoms unless the blood tests are grossly abnormal; however most patients with hypothyroidism usually test only at borderline low or even normal. Alternative medicine doctors are usually more open to this approach. The Broda O. Barnes, MD Foundation in Trumbull, Connecticut, keeps a list of doctors who proscribe thyroid based on basal temperatures and signs and symptoms. Many members of the chelation doctors group, American College of Advancement in Medicine (ACAM,) are also more liberal with thyroid prescribing (see below). Thousands of patients have been safely helped by a little thyroid, and a month’s supply costs only about $5.00. It is marvelous to help restore lost sex drive, and it is great for women having difficulty conceiving. Patients who futilely spent megabucks on drug and in vitro fertilization techniques have been able to conceive by using simple natural thyroid and hormonal replacement. The most common thyroid miracles, however, are those from grateful patients whose spouses are no longer freezing in bed. Cold feet and bodies covered with sweats and heavy socks are replaced by toasty, warm extremities; now that’s sexy!

CONSCIOUS HEALTH

Oriental Medicine & Food By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD

I

f you’ve been reading the articles in this series, you’re starting to understand that Oriental Medicine treats disease and health in fundamentally different ways than we’re used to thinking in the West. This is not only true from the standpoint of herbs, acupuncture, etc., but also for something as basic as the foods we eat. Today you’ll learn how Oriental Medicine addresses food as medicine.

Food = Medicine According to the grandfather of all Oriental Medical books, The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, which says, “Medicine and food are the same.” In fact, the very same system of categorizing herbs applies when categorizing foods. For a refresher on these ideas, see last month’s article on Oriental Herbal Medicine. Like herbs, foods have specific tastes and temperatures, as well as organs they affect. And, for healing they are used in a similar way. If someone experiences symptoms of excessive heat imbalance, most of the time foods that are cooling help. If someone has symptoms of dryness, moistening foods are useful. The bottom line is that to understand which foods will be helpful for specific illnesses, you need to understand the underlying state of balance and imbalance causing it.

Here is a sampling of some of the foods used for specific types of imbalances: Stagnant Blood: typical symptoms include fixed or sharp pain. Eggplant – cool and sweet – relieves pain reduces swelling, and invigorates blood flow.

Peanuts – neutral and sweet – regulate blood flow, improve appetite, strengthen digestion, and moisten the lungs.

Weak Digestion: often accompanies

Heat Conditions: typical symptoms include red eyes, restlessness, and rapid pulse. Asparagus – cool, sweet and bitter – clears heat, detoxifies the body, promotes blood circulation, and clears the lungs. Carrot – cool, sweet and pungent – clears heat, strengthens all internal organs, lubricates the intestines and promotes digestion.

stagnant food, symptoms can include digestive gas and tiredness, particularly after eating. Ginger Root – warm and pungent – promotes sweating and combats toxins. Cinnamon – hot, pungent and sweet – strengthens the stomach, warms cold and stops pain. There are, of course, hundreds of foods categorized in Oriental Medicine. This list is primarily to give you an idea of how they are used.

Dampness: this might include symp-

toms such as stagnant fluids, swelling and lung or nasal congestion – divided into cold and hot categories. Winter Melon – cool, sweet, bland – clears heat, detoxifies, and dispels dampness. Beef – warm and sweet – benefits tendons and bones, strengthens vitality and blood, improves digestion, and dispels dampness.

Stagnant Digestion: symptoms such as bloating after eating and nausea Bamboo Shoots – cool and sweet – strengthen the stomach, relieve food retention, resolves mucous, and promotes diuresis. Bell Pepper – slightly warm, pungent and sweet – promotes blood circulation, removes stagnant food, and reduces swelling.

Nourish Blood: someone with weak blood may experience fatigue, pallor, and listlessness. Beets – cool and sweet – nourish blood, calm the spirit, and lubricate the intestines. Chicken – warm and sweet – nourish blood, strengthen vitality, supports the kidneys, and benefits digestion.

As with all of Oriental Medicine, when it comes to foods, the intention is creating balance. Moderation, balance of foods, eating slowly and with intention are all important as well. With practice it is possible to identify subtle responses your body makes to the foods you eat. These responses, whether positive (uplifted energy and mood, lack of cravings for other foods) or negative (tired or jittery, craving sweets or other foods after a meal, depression or agitation) will, over time, help you to refine your diet to suit your own unique situation. And since everyone is different, you will want to consider setting aside your preconceptions about what foods may be good for you. The ideal diet for someone with Eskimo ancestors is very likely to be radically different for someone who’s ancestors all lived in the Mediterranean. References: 1. NATURAL SOLUTIONS Natural Garden Solutions

ay is here and the temperature is rising! It’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy your garden. You can use ingredients you find around your home to keep your garden healthy and beautiful. Here are just a few ideas:

Epsom salts may be used in the garden for improved chlorophyll production and uptake of nutrients when sprinkled around plants. Gardeners usually use Epsom salts for flowering plants (especially roses), evergreens, shrubs, and tomatoes.

Crushed egg shells are a great source of nutrients for plants, especially calcium. Place them at the bottom of a pot, in a circle around tender plant stems such as peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, and cabbage to deter slugs and cutworms, or place the egg shells in the soil with tomatoes.

Cayenne pepper sprinkled around your garden will keep pesky cats away.

One small bottle hot sauce or one can cayenne pepper mixed can help keep pesky raccoons out of your yard. Add one gallon of water and one teaspoon of mild dishwashing detergent to the hot sauce and spray this repellent on plants or anything you wish to protect. The spray must be reapplied after heavy rain or watering and fruits and vegetables should be washed before consumption.

Basil is a natural insect repellent. If you spend a lot of time outside around your garden, put a few pots around your sitting area and water them before you plan on spending time outside. It will keep those annoying flies and gnats away.

ater is essential to all life. Without it, the living breathing biosphere that exists on the surface of the earth wouldn’t be possible. Nicknamed the “water” planet, earth is covered by one of our most precious resources. However 97% of it is locked in the oceans, and is toxic to humans and many plants and animals. So how do we obtain fresh water resources? To understand, we need to turn to the Hydrologic Cycle. The Hydrologic Cycle is Mother Nature’s process for moving water around the globe. It is the Earth’s way of purifying and cleaning our planetary water through distillation. The cycle begins as the sun heats the water in our rivers, lakes and oceans. In the heating process, small amounts of water vapor leave the surface of the water and rise into the atmosphere, leaving behind impurities (Evaporation). When the water vapor cools, it forms clouds (Condensation). As the air temperature in the upper atmosphere drops, the water vapor cools and converts back to a liquid/solid in the form of rain or ice depending upon the surrounding air temperature (Precipitation). When the rain or snow droplet reaches the surface of the Earth, it is ready to become part of the process again. It is this process that cleans the Earth’s water.

Our air is frequently polluted by modern and industrial activities and as raindrops pick up these contaminants on their way back to earth. The water becomes even more polluted as it flows in our streams, lakes, rivers, oceans or moves underground. Some of this contamination is from “natural” sources, but much of it is due to manmade pollution. Because of this, we need to treat the water so that it can be used for the wide array of purposes that humans use water.

Steam-distillation Follows The Hydrological Cycle To Clean Water Steam distillation is sometimes referred to as Nature’s Distiller. The same three steps Nature uses to clean our water are the steps used in the steamdistillation process.

1. Water in the boiling tank

Water is Not Created or Destroyed

Water continually changes location and form. The water we drink today may have been lapped up by dinosaurs millions of years ago, or helped to fill Julius Caesar’s bathing pool. The water we use now is the same supply that the planet started with in the beginning. Its quality is renewed again and again by the natural Hydrologic Cycle.

HAIR COLORING, a better way‌

By Lana Nickerson

A

new hair color is always appealing and almost everyone has tried to change their hair color at some time: blonde highlights, bright reds, or a natural shade simply to cover the growth of gray hair. The practice of coloring hair has been around for thousands of years. The Egyptians colored their black hair with indigo to give it a blue shade and used a blend of indigo and henna to dye their beards. The Romans used natural colors from plants, but also colors based on lead. They would mix these with talc before applying to the hair; bright but toxic. Even back then, vanity trumped common sense. The most desired color, blonde, was the hardest to achieve. Most people who tried to lighten their hair were discouraged by bleaching methods which required potassium nitric acid, swallow’s dung, chamomile infusions or methods that subjected the aspiring blondes to hours of exposure in the hot sun. Toward the end of the eighteenth century, it was discovered that the same substances used to dye wool were also suitable for dyeing human hair. In 1909, the French chemist Eugene Schuller used the chemical paraphenylenediamine to create the first commercial hair color. The company he created, L’Oreal, still thrives today.

Anyone who has visited the hair-coloring aisle of their local supermarket might think that technology has not done much to make the process of hair coloring any simpler. The variety of permanent colors, tints and lighteners can be intimidating, particularly when you consider the need to protect the health of our bodies, the condition of our hair and to avoid the possibility of allergic reactions. Human hair is composed primarily of the protein keratin, which is also found in finger and toenails. Most permanent hair coloring uses a combination of synthetic dyes and other chemical compounds that allow the color to penetrate into the hair and persist beyond regular shampooing. Typically, ammonia is the chemical that opens up the hair cuticle, the outer layer of the hair shaft, and allows the color to reach the interior cortex of the hair. Simultaneously, hydrogen peroxide is used in combination with the ammonia, to remove the original hair color so that it can be replaced with the new color. It does this by breaking the chemical bonds in the hair shaft, which results in the release of sulfur, thereby creating the particular odor we associate with the hair

salon. Conditioners are also used in the hair color to seal the hair cuticle and protect the new color. Hydrogen peroxide can also be used, by itself, as a bleaching or lightening agent. Unfortunately, these same harsh chemicals that allow for beautiful, longlasting hair color can also damage your hair. An alternative to the harsh chemical processes commonly used today are hair colors that use natural dyes with minimal amounts of hydrogen peroxide and no ammonia. Traditionally, natural hair colors have not lasted as long as synthetic colors and have not always provided consistent results. However, there are natural hair coloring products available today that can gently provide beautiful permanent hair color with a minimal amount of exposure to harsh chemical damage to you and your hair. Sage

M

ost of us know sage as a culinary herb that adds aroma and flavor to poultry dressings, cheese casseroles, breads, and many other dishes. The oil in sage (salviol) is said to benefit digestion of fatty foods, and sage has a long history of use in cooking, and as a meat preservative. Those who want to harvest sage in the wild should learn to distinguish ‘true sage’ (most commonly, Salvia Officianalis) from sagebrush (also called chamiso), which is not sage, but a variety of wormwood, and extremely bitter. True sage usually grows in bushes of wrinkled gray-green leaves, but the leaves may also be smooth silvery-white, or dark, sticky green. Most importantly, the leaves grow opposite each other on the stem, while those of sagebrush crowd the stem and are toothed at their ends. Sagebrush also flowers differently, in yellow bunches

By Kallie Wilbourn

all along the stem, while true sage flowers are small, and range from pink to purple. The name salvia derives from the Latin salvere, which means to heal, and Ancient Romans used the herb for everything from tooth cleansing to ceremonial burning. In the Middle Ages, the French referred to sage as ‘toute bonne’ (all good). Native Americans burned the plant as an aromatic, and used infusions to cleanse wounds and wash their hair. The plant has traditional use relaxing gastrointestinal spasms, and to treat canker sores, bleeding gums, sore throat, tonsillitis, and laryngitis. It may guard against depletion of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter crucial to brain function (people given sage oil tablets were found to perform better on a word recall test). Modern research shows that sage reduces perspiration by 50%, and that it is May 2008

effective against several infection-causing bacteria. Sage contains tannins that may help kill gingivitis bacteria. As a strong anti-bacterial and astringent agent, it is effective for cleansing and healing abrasions, contusions, and inflamed skin. Sage has also been used traditionally to promote menstruation and may stimulate uterine contractions, so pregnant women should not consume sage in highly concentrated forms. Very strong sage teas or extracts may cause inflammation of the lips and mouth lining. Concentrated sage oil is definitely toxic, and for use in aromatherapy only. If you wish to try sage in a concentrated form, consult a trusted herbalist. Sage is available in liquid leaf extract form. You can grow your own sage and harvest the leaves by cutting the plant below the lowest green leaves. Either strip the leaves off, or bundle the stems whole and hang them in an airy, shaded place (never in sunlight) until they are completely dry. As a culinary herb, sage enlivens many bland dishes. History proves its merit (with careful use) as a medicinal herb. And anyone who has hiked past wild sage in the spring knows that as an aromatic alone, sage is an herb well worth cultivating. • PRICE • PAROM PRICE stands for Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. PAROM stands for Pain-Free Active Range of Motion.

Protection – prevent further injury by using a brace or staying off the injured part.

775.827.6888

Rest – decrease or stop the activity of the injured part to

New location: 1225 Westfield Ave., Reno Carol Christian, Founder | www.rahcc.com

fairly minimal levels.

Ice – cool the injured area for 20-30 minutes. Continue using ice until the pain and swelling begin to subside. Use ice for pain, heat for stiffness. Don’t reapply ice or heat until the body part has returned to its normal temperature.

Body Care to invigorate your spirit... Color to match your mood... Fragrances to express your personality...

Compression – using an elastic wrap can help reduce

the swelling, reduce pain, protect the part, and provide needed stability for life’s activities.

Elevation – using pillows, a table, or a couch, raise the

injured part until it is significantly above your heart. Do this for 10-30 minutes at a time. Beauty From Nature

Pain-Free Active Range Of Motion – while supporting the injured part, on a table for example, slide it back and forth without any strain or pain. The key is to move the joint or muscle without resistance, which will help reduce swelling, encourage natural motion, reduce pain, and speed healing.

Get Rid of Wrinkles.

What about anti-inflammatory medications? My recommendation is to minimize them unless the injury is disturbing your sleep. They do not actually help you heal, they block some of the pain and reduce some swelling but remember, swelling is a natural part of the healing process, and is only a problem when it persists continuously.

Not All Saunas Are Created Equal By Peter Zulim

PART 2 Editor’s Note: In last month’s issue, you learned that there are several different ways of heating your sauna. And not all have the same effects. This month, continue to learn about details to pay attention to when shopping for the perfect sauna for your home or office.

T

he next consideration is the type of wood used. The traditional wood used for saunas has been cedar and is still the preferred wood by most manufactures and buyers. Cedar has the advantage of being durable but it is an aromatic wood and individuals may be sensitive to the odor produced by cedar. The odor is produced from off gassing. As the sauna is used this off gassing will diminish. Canadian Western Red Cedar is considered the best cedar to use in a sauna, but is also short in supply, making it the most expensive. Aspen, basswood, hemlock, and spruce are other commonly used woods in saunas. The advantage of these woods is that they produce little or no off gassing. Aspen and basswood are considered to be the most hypoallergenic but are also more expensive. An overlooked item by most sauna purchasers is whether the entire sauna is made of a hypoallergenic wood. Some sauna manufacturers cut corners by using an inexpensive wood on the bottom, top, and back portions of the outside of the sauna. Some manufactures even go so far as to use plywood, which out gasses formaldehyde and other toxic substances. It’s best to buy a sauna that uses only one wood and to stay away from any product that uses plywood. Also, you do not want to buy a sauna that uses glues and epoxies in its construction. A wooden sauna can be made without the use of such materials. There is a growing concern that electro magnetic frequencies (EMF) are a risk to health. If you are concerned about EMF exposure you should look for a sauna that has shielded electrical wires. Placement and ease of use of the controls are important considerations. It is best to have the on and off switch on the outside of the sauna where it is easy to access. Some saunas have only one control which is on the inside back wall which forces you to go inside to the sauna to turn it on and off. Some saunas take more than an hour to get up to operating temperature and will only stay on for an hour at a time which will require it to be turned on again. The temperature display should be on the outside and inside of your saunas so you can monitor the temperature before and during you sauna session. One of the most useful features is to have it where you can program your sauna to come on at a certain time so it is ready to go when you are. This is especially important for those with a busy schedule and do not have the time to turn on the sauna and wait for it to heat up.

It is highly recommended that you buy your sauna from a local dealer. Those that buy saunas over the Internet or from a wholesaler run the risk of getting stuck with something that does not work or meet expectations. Often the sauna will be delivered by a freight company and it is entirely up to the purchaser to bring it inside of the building, unpack it and assemble it. If there is a problem it is often difficult to get help from the seller who may be hundreds of miles away. It can be a very difficult and expensive task to ship the sauna back to the seller. Ideally you should take your sauna for a “test drive” before purchasing. You should be able to go over to the dealer and sit in a sauna and sweat. More than one time is desirable because you might sweat more or less on different occasions. Look for a dealer that has a clean shower where you can shower off after your saunas session. You do not want to wait to go home and shower where you will reabsorb some of the toxins you just sweated out. Ask questions. Talk to other sauna owners. A sauna is not like an automobile where if you have a problem you can drive it back to the dealer for service or trade it in for something else. Investigate the manufacturer. How long has the company been making saunas? What kind of warranty does it offer? You want to get the best sauna for your money but more importantly you want to get the best sauna for your health. Sometimes the best sauna for you will be made overseas. Sometimes a manufacture will stress country of origin to over shadow its weakness. What is more important than where the sauna is made is that it works and is made out of quality materials and is well crafted. Look at the fit and finish. Some things to consider are: Is there gaps in the seams? Does it feel flimsy? Is it easy to assemble and disassemble? Are the benches narrow or deep? Lastly, look for a sauna that has been independently tested by a third party to determine whether it is producing the correct micron of FIR energy and that it is not out gassing any toxins. Usually only the higher end manufactures will have these tests done because they are expensive; many saunas would not pass such a test, and therefore are not tested. References: 1. TRAVEL

Quick Spring Adventures By Lauren Birtwhistle

Sonoma County Sonoma County is the perfect place for any wine connoisseur. But next time you take a break to enjoy a little wine tasting, think about trying it in a whole new way. Getaway Adventures puts a new spin on wine tasting. Explore Sonoma County’s wine country by bike or even kayak! Enjoy the tastes of Sonoma while biking through vineyards and enjoying a gourmet picnic lunch. If you’re feeling really adventurous, check out their Pedal and Paddle tour. Begin your day cycling through vineyards and doing some wine tasting. After a picnic lunch, experience a calm kayaking trip along the Russian river. And if wine isn’t for you, experience Africa! SafariWest is an animal preserve in Sonoma County that gives people a chance to go on an African Safari. Take the family, hop in an authentic safari vehicle and get ready to be surrounded by giraffe, gazelle, scimitar-horned oryx, ostrich, and much more! SafariWest offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Lake County Lake County is another famous wine county, but wine is definitely not all Lake County has to offer. Aside from its rolling hillsides of vineyards and beautiful wineries, it is bursting with all kinds of agriculture. Lake County hosts three different farmers markets beginning in May. And if you want a little more action, try horseback riding. Wiloth Equine Therapy and Riding Center is a truly amazing organization. Not only do they provide horseback riding lessons and guided tours through breathtaking mountain views and vineyards, but all proceeds from these services go on to help fund the riding center’s therapeutic riding programs. Equine-facilitated therapy in conjunction with other therapies can improve gross motor skills, fine motor skills, long- and short-term memory, as well as improve eye contact, the ability to interact with

outside environments, the ability to transition from one activity to another, improved language, the easing of personal anxieties, and the confidence to interact socially with others. And what would Lake County be without lakes! Summertime at Clear Lake offers the perfect place for every water sport enthusiast.

This busy county is full of adventure and is perfect for a quick weekend getaway. Enjoy mountain views, redwoods and rustic bridges with a relaxing trip on the Skunk Train. The train takes you through dark tunnels and hidden meadows along the Noyo River. Make sure to stop by and check out the first certified organic brewpub in the country, Ukiah Brewing Company. Not only is the brewpub committed to providing quality organic beer and wine, but they take pride in their 100% organic menu. Try anything from Thai curry to a good old-fashioned cheeseburger. If you just want to get outside, visit Glass Beach in Fort Bragg. This unique beach tells a story of Nature overcoming man’s mistakes. For many decades the beach was used as a dumping site for refuse and glass. Over time, the pounding waves have created millions of polished glass pieces now strewn across the beach. Take time collecting a few and exploring the wonderful tide pools.

Menopause Treatments Based On Your Body’s Individual Needs Continued from page 36. Disease in women starts with the onset of declining hormones. Risk factors for heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke, and dementia start at this time. HRT can decrease the rate of dementia by 5 fold if started early enough. If you wait until age 75, you are too late. The average 85 year old female has a 50% chance of dementia currently. It is vital for women to have all the information in order to make an informed decision on treatment options. It is a confusing time for women. The reality is that negative media coverage distorts adverse effects in a small minority. The Women’s Leisure Study in 2007 showed lower overall mortality in women on estrogen replacement therapy. Age Management Medicine and bioidentical hormone replacement have tremendous benefits in improving quality of life and ensuring optimal health and youthfulness. Physicians who practice AMM treat every patient as unique and you can be sure that your program will not be a “one size fits all” model. You will receive just the hormones you need. There are treatment programs that utilize bioidentical natural products whenever possible that are delivered to the body in a way that mimics the normal process. References: 1. Chronic Shoulder Pain? Continued from page 39. Michael never made that second visit. Instead he called from Cleveland and said that his shoulder felt completely healed. He was reminded to take care of his new shoulder because the healing process would not be fully complete for another 6-8 weeks. He came to the clinic once more about a year later. He said that he had been aggressively skiing down some deep slopes and had started to notice a return of his shoulder pain. He was not going to take a chance at the rotator cuff becoming injured again. So he came in for a third injection. Michael now has a fully functioning shoulder. To be fair, he probably would have had a similar success story after shoulder surgery. But Prolozone therapy is so much easier and safer. It requires no general anesthesia, no casts, no physical therapy, and no down time. Our bodies are designed to heal themselves. But in order to do that, they need oxygen. The ligaments in Michael’s damaged rotator cuff desperately needed oxygen, and when they finally received it, the rest is history. References: 1. Introducing a New Cat to a Resident Dog Continued from page 44. Although your dog must be taught that chasing or being rough with the cat is unacceptable behavior, your dog must also be taught how to behave appropriately (e.g., sitting, coming when called, or lying down), and be rewarded for doing so. If your dog is often punished when the cat is around and never has “good things” happen in the cat’s presence, your dog may redirect aggression toward the cat.

5.

During the introduction process, you may want to keep your dog on leash and with you when the cat is free in the house. Be sure that your cat has an escape route, and a place to hide. Keep the dog and cat separated when you are not home until you are certain the cat will be safe. Eventually your dog and cat will become friends. NOTES: Dogs like to eat cat food because it is very high in protein, and therefore very delicious. You should keep the cat food out of the dog’s reach. Why dogs like to “raid the litter box” is not well understood, but eating cat feces is a relatively common behavior. Although there are no health hazards to the dog from this habit, owners tend not to appreciate it. Unfortunately, attempts to keep the dog out of the litter box or punishment after the fact will NOT change the dog’s behavior. The best solution is to place the litter box where the dog cannot access it – such as behind a baby gate or in a closet with the door anchored open (from both sides) just wide enough for the cat. HEALTHY COOKING

Baked Melenzane Eggplant Roll-ups (5 to 6 servings)

By Judy Shallenberger

A

s a child I heard, over and over, my Italian grandfather say to my grandmother, “Let’s have Melenzane tonight.” Even as a kid I loved all the ways my Grandmother fixed eggplant. Our family would often make sandwiches with the leftovers, since eggplant has a toothsome texture and is a wonderful substitute for meat. Here is what you need:

•1 large eggplant sliced lengthwise •1 tsp sea salt •1⁄4 cup olive oil •2 tbs flour •5 -6 slices of baby or Jarlsberg Swiss cheese •5-6 slices of procutto •1 1⁄2 cups chopped or minced Roma tomatoes •2 pinches sea salt •1⁄2 cup chopped fresh basil •1 tbs olive oil •1⁄4 tsp garlic powder or 1 tsp minced

1. Slice a large eggplant lengthwise, in about 6 or 7 slices, rinse and sprinkle each side with the sea salt, rubbing each side, and let stand about ten minutes.

2. While eggplant is resting, wash tomatoes, and chop finely and put into a bowl. Add 1 tbs olive oil, basil, garlic powder, 2 pinches of sea salt and let stand. 3. Flour a large plate and coat each piece of eggplant with flour on both sides. 4 .Set each slice of eggplant on a large baking sheet coated with about 2 to 3 Tbs olive oil. Preheat oven to 425 degrees and bake 5 minutes on each side.

5. Remove from the oven and let cool about 10 minutes. Eggplant should be tender. 6. When eggplant is cool, put a half slice of swiss cheese and prociutto on the center of the slice and roll from one end to the other. 7. Place each roll, seam side down in a 12-16 inch baking dish, drizzled with 1Tbs olive oil. 8. Pour tomato mix over the top of rolls. Bake 425 degrees for 15-20 minutes, until tomatoes are bubbly. Nutritional Benefits:

that can do damage to your DNA. If that doesn’t sound good enough, nasunin also protects your body against lipid peroxidation. In simpler terms it keeps fats from oxidizing, turning rancid, and sticking to your arterial walls. When this happens it helps to prevent the bad LDL cholesterol from accumulating in our bodies. So when you are busy eating vegetables vibrant with color, remember there are chemicals at work doing positive things for your health. For more info call Judy Shallenberger at 775-884-3990. Find ad on page 27.

Eggplant is low in calories, high in fiber, potassium, niacin, folate, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, all heart healthy minerals. The purple in eggplant is loaded with the phytochemical nasunin. Phytochemicals are found in plants, and play a big role in protecting the plant from pests and other environmental culprits. When we eat vegetables we inherit the same types of protections these chemicals give to the plants when they are growing. Nasunin is a powerful antioxidant that according to studies, literally eats up free radicals

CIRCLE OF

LIFE SPA healing from the inside out

Free Far Infrared Sauna Session with First Visit I’m a 55-year young woman on a journey back to health and this is my story. For the past 6 years I have been in and out of hospitals for various surgeries and I was sick all the time! On top of catching every illness that crossed my path, I had horrible back pain for as long as I can remember. The pain was getting so horrible that I could hardly move. I scheduled lower back surgery for June 2007. Before I had my back surgery I fell down and hurt my good shoulder. I still had severe back pain after my surgery and my shoulder started to get worse. I reluctantly went to my doctor to find out what I did to my shoulder. I was sure it would end up in another surgery. He diagnosed me with tendonitis and gave me a prescription for steroids. That was it... I’d had enough! Instead of getting the prescription, I called Janet at Circle of Life Spa… I wanted my life back!! I met with Janet and she explained to me that my body was full of toxins from all the surgeries and medications. She had me get in the floating tank and then the infrared sauna. I was so amazed at what one visit to Circle of Life did for my body – I wanted more! I got started on a weekly routine of mineral wraps, floating tank and infrared sauna sessions to detox my body. I’ve been detoxing for only 4 months but the results are incredible! I see changes in my body every day and so do others – I’ve had many people tell me that I glow! I’ve lost 27 pounds and all the pain in my body is gone!!!! You can’t put a price on good health and I’m so thankful for Circle of Life Spa for helping me to get my health back.
