PUBLISHERLETTER
COVERSTORY
Dear Readers, A couple of months ago we published a brief announcing how one could have their name and address removed from the junk mail we receive in our mail box. I guess it does not work because I placed my name on that list and the amount of junk mail I receive has not decreased. Excuse me, but I thought that most businesses were in dire financial straits. Direct mail comes with a high price tag. You have to pay writers, purchase the paper, and pay for the printing and postage. The big question is how many of these direct mail pieces go into the trash or the shredder? Not only is it an expensive marketing strategy, it is a huge waste of natural resources. I like receiving information in the mail, yet I want to pick and choose what I receive. Every time I shred an unwanted junk mail piece I think…look at this waste, a waste of our resources and a waste of my time spent shredding. Again, it is up to us to change our world. Before signing up for something free, ask if your name will be sold to a mailing list. Here are a couple of websites to take your name off a company’s mailing list: www.proquo.com and www. ehow.com/how. Little adjustments can turn into big changes. It is up to us to be aware of what is going on around us. In this issue you will find 3 Be-Aware alerts – ignorance is not bliss! Happy May and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in the world.
Spring Onion Written by Sara Piccola
T
he spring onion is better known in the United States as scallion. Spring onions tend to have more flavor and heat than a green onion, and a slightly rounded bulb. Used mostly in Chinese cooking, spring onions have a large amount of health benefits. The white part contains vitamins B and C while the green is filled with vitamin A. The sweet onion is known to be effective in stimulating sweat, aiding urination, calming the nerves and expelling sputum. They also can be used to fight symptoms of a common cold, sinus blockage and itchy throat. Spring onions are used in alternative medicine practices to lower cholesterol and provide supportive benefits in reducing atherosclerosis. To receive the best therapeutic benefits use the bulb of the onion, however, there are benefits found in the green leafy part as well. For adults with chronic kidney disease, onions are believed to alleviate secondary health complications of kidney disease. Aside from their therapeutic benefits, spring onions add flavor to many recipes and serve as a balance when cooking proteins from a cold habitat, such as fish, crab, shrimp, and duck.

Be Aware of Fluoridation SB311
CONFERENCE MAY 17, 2009 10AM - 5PM GRAND SIERRA RESORT AND CASINO - RENO, NV
was introduced to the Nevada Senate Mar. 16, 2009, requiring the fluoridation of water provided by certain public water systems and water authorities in certain counties. Various hearings were held with the following outcomes: Mar. 19 at the Senate Natural Resources, refefer; Apr. 6 at the Senate Health and Education, no action; and Apr. 8 at the Senate Health and Education with a recommendation to pass. Adding fluoride to tap water is supposed to prevent tooth decay, but the harmful effects when it is ingested may out weigh the slim chance it will make significant difference in our dental health. Is it the job of the water authority to medicate the public?

Water Fluoridation & Fluoride Quick Facts:
Sponsored by: Quantum Multimedia Productions
• Fluoride is more effective when administered topically, not ingested.
HEALTHBRIEF
• According to a 2006 report by the American Dental Association (ADA), “fluoride intake above the recommended level for a child creates a risk for enamel fluorosis [a permanent tooth defect] in teeth during their development before eruption through the gums.”
L
iving in the desert, air conditioning can get expensive. An alternative to air conditioning is installing an attic fan. Attic fans save up to 30 percent on cooling costs by getting rid of hot air that is trapped in attics causing heat to back up into the home.
• Sufficient fluoride exposure appears to bring about increases in blood glucose or impaired glucose tolerance in some individuals and to increase the severity of some types of diabetes. Diabetic individuals will often have higher than normal water intake, and consequently, will have higher than normal fluoride intake for a given concentration of fluoride in drinking water.
An attic can get as high as 150ºF. Attic fans can be electrically or solar powered and are normally mounted on the roof. They create airflow through the attic that does not rely on wind or require venting. Attic fans can also be timed to turn on and off automatically when the area reaches a certain temperature. Aside from lowering air conditioning costs, attic fans are also water proof and keep the attic dry through the winter months.
• Fluoride may negatively affect the brain, endocrine system, thyroid, pineal gland and immune system. References: 1. www.leg.state.nv.us/75th2009/Reports/history.cfm?ID=876 2. www.fluoridealert.org/health/epa/nrc/excerpts.html

PROVIDERPROFILE
Dr. Robert Rand Written by Sara Piccola
O
Dr. Rand’s medical knowledge makes him interested in assuring that there is evidence to support everything he does. Whether it be Western or alternative medicine, he will not move forward with treatment unless there is evidence-based support. The majority of patients that come to Dr. Rand are seeking alternative treatment for pain. Using conventional and non-conventional methods Dr. Rand treats pain, diabetes, hypertension and other primary care ailments. He also offers bio identical hormone replacement for both men and women and deals with many sexual dysfunction cases. Although many people seek Dr. Rand out for his alternative medical approaches, he always gives a patient their diagnosis and the solutions he can offer, both in alternative and traditional medicine. If an approach is not working, he will modify it and move onto something that does work. Dr. Rand is constantly introducing more alternative medicine into his clinic. No matter what ails a patient, Dr. Rand says he has a degree of knowledge in terms of how to treat that with alternative therapy. It is rare to find a family doctor who incorporates Western and alternative medicine into their practice. Dr. Rand’s biggest surprise in this industry is the separation between the two types of treatment. “If Western and alternative practitioners could work together, much could be learned from one another.” Dr. Rand expects to incorporate more energy medicine into his practice in the near future. He wants to start working towards making Reno a “blue zone.” Blue zones are places on the planet where it has been proven people live longer. Dr. Rand is fascinated by the studies that are currently being conducted on this subject, making this is very exciting time for him to be in medicine.
ne of the most interesting facets about Dr. Robert Rand is his past and how he ended up in Reno, Nevada to live out his dream. After graduating from college on the East coast with a degree in anthropology, Dr. Rand wanted nothing more than to move out West to lead a carefree life skiing. A few years passed and he was ready to go back to school to become a doctor. After finishing his pre-med studies he moved to Lake Tahoe where he was a ski patrolman while waiting to get into medical school. Medical anthropology was always Dr. Rand’s primary interest. The classes he took on the subject inspired him to travel after graduating. He went to Kenya where is truly discovered that he wanted to be a doctor. Dr. Rand had never been exposed to people in such a wretched state of humanity and this was the time in his life when he said, “one day I’m going to go back to school and become a physician.” Dr. Rand attended medical school at Ross University in the Caribbean. He spent two years there before deciding to move back to the U.S. to finish his third and fourth year. Dr. Rand has been running his own practice for three years. He has a unique style of medicine, incorporating Western and alternative medicine into his practice. As a medical doctor who also incorporates acupuncture, Dr. Rand has had tremendous success in treating medical conditions such as migraines, knee pain and back pain. Being an athlete all his life, Dr. Rand has used acupuncture for his own ailments, assuring that it is successful. Even so, when he does acupuncture, he says he does it responsibly. If someone comes in and says they want acupuncture for weight loss, he will not perform this task because he has not found strong data that supports its effectiveness.

Electrolyzed Oxidizing Water Written by Brittany Russell
Water is good for us, we know this! If you need reminding, here are
10 reasons to drink water:
1. Water is absolutely essential to
the human body’s survival. A person can live for about a month without food, but only about a week without water.
2. Water helps to maintain healthy body weight by increasing metabolism and regulating appetite. 3. Water leads to increased energy
levels. The most common cause of daytime fatigue is mild dehydration.
4. Drinking adequate amounts of water can decrease the risk of certain types of cancers, including colon cancer, bladder cancer and breast cancer.
5. For a majority of sufferers, drink-
ing water can significantly reduce joint and/or back pain.
6. Water leads to overall greater health by flushing out wastes and bacteria that can cause disease.

7. Water can prevent and alleviate headaches. 8. Water naturally moisturizes skin
and ensures proper cellular formation underneath layers of skin to give it a healthy, glowing appearance.
9. Water aids in the digestion pro-
cess and prevents constipation.
10. Water is the primary mode of transportation for all nutrients in the body and is essential for proper circulation. Many do not know that a process of electrolysis to water makes it far more beneficial than we ever could have imagined. Using Electrolyzed oxidizing water (EO water) topically has proven to hold its own benefits. Research carried out in Japan revealed that electrolysis of deionized water containing a low concentration of sodium chloride (0.1 percent) in an electrolysis chamber imparted

strong bactericidal and virucidal properties to the water collected from the anode (EO water). In this study, the efficacy of EO water for inactivating Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Listeria monocytogenes was evaluated, proving that EO water may be a useful disinfectant.

ast month I had the privilege to interview Bob Burg, author of the books “The Go Giver” and “Endless Referrals,” over the phone and meet him in person as well. He is simply delightful and approachable, making this young lady feel right at home. Even though our phone conversation was only half an hour long we covered several important topics which were included in his seminar held in Reno April 10, “Endless Referrals Live.” Topics we discussed were how to cultivate win-win relationships with others, by making their business more fun, less stressful and at the same time adding value to their life. That’s right you read it correctly – it’s not about you. In “The Go Giver,” Bob tells the story of a young salesman and introduces him to the four laws of giving. This parable deals with Giving before Receiving. By the giving of yourself and putting others first you will impact your financial bottom line in a very lucrative way. Of course, in doing so Bob says, “please be sincere.” You never know how long this process will take, when a good deed will come

back your way. Yet it will, so be patient. On the other hand one might ask, if I do all the giving how does one determine if or when you’re giving is being taken advantage of? Giving is not about being a martyr or a sacrificial lamb and Bob goes over this in detail in the law of receptivity. I asked Bob, do you feel businesses can replace advertising exposure with just word of mouth referrals. Bob responded, “It is not a matter of replacing as it is augmenting.” Meaning, as business owners we need several avenues to cultivate new business. He calls it the treacherous dichotomy with the false dilemma of the unnecessary use of the phrase “one or the other.” In other words, do you want to be wealthy or happy, nice or finish first, advertise or just have referrals; the answer is we want both because one compliments the other. careful about what we eat. We are all different when it comes to the exact balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fats that nourish us best, and there is no one diet which works for everyone. Regardless of your individual metabolism, there are some absolutes when it comes to a healthy diet. They revolve as much around what we should NOT eat, as what we should.
Nourish your body. Please your palette.
A diet that is largely based on cooked processed food devoid of the micro nutrition that our bodies need to survive; enzymes, bacteria, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients will NOT support a healthy terrain. We must recognize that much of what we are told about ‘healthy’ food in the media is misinformation distributed by companies and corporations who use profit rather than health as their driver. We must reconnect with real food, food that nourishes our terrain – the food that we have been genetically designed to eat. Growing and eating our own fresh, seasonal produce, choosing animal products that have been traditionally raised, making most of what we eat from scratch and deliberately avoiding genetically modified and processed foods containing additives, preservatives and other toxic chemicals that negatively impact on our terrain – this is what we should be doing in order to flourish.

“God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.”
If you think that eating this way sounds not only difficult but time consuming and boring, think again; healthy food is as delicious, if not more so than unhealthy food, once you become competent in its preparation and presentation. Armed with some basic techniques, an understanding of flavor, a little imagination and good planning skills, you can choose to spend as much or as little time in the kitchen as you like, depending on your lifestyle. Either way, a whole foods diet will mean a return of the energy and vibrant health that you once enjoyed and your body will thank you for it!
"No language could express the power and beauty and heroism of a mother's love." "All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my mother."
Look out for next month’s article, which discusses biochemical individuality, and examines the reasons why there is no one diet which works best for everyone.

ou can’t open a magazine, listen to the news or read a newspaper (if you can find one) without reading about renewable energy, going green and green collar jobs. What is the hype all about and why does it matter? With population increasing at such a rapid rate, we are also confronted with dramatic economic growth and an increase in energy consumption. The demand for natural recourses for energy use and growth is taking a toll on our environment and the human species. These changes are affecting our health, natural ecosystems, other species, our climate and even our economy. Sustainability is a word we hear used more and more. By creating a sustainable environment we can support future generations. If we succeed, they won’t face the same environmental dilemmas that we face today – climate changes resulting in catastrophic storms, over-consumption, diminishing nonrenewable resources like oil, and the decrease in other natural

resources such as clean water and trees. By sustaining global quality, future generations will be able to meet their need without further compromise to their environment. Growth in renewable energy, such as wind and solar, not only helps preserve nonrenewable resources, but can also help the economy by creating jobs, green collar jobs. There are so many things that we can do to help with sustainability. Recycle, reuse and refuse. Make a simple change by bringing your own grocery bag to the store or make a significant change and install solar panels to create energy. Look around your own environment to see what changes you can make for a sustainable future. Simple changes can lead to larger results. n Feb. 4, 2009 a bill (HR 875) was introduced into the legislature that will ultimately give the government power to control food production at all levels. Large farming industries down to individual growers will be regulated if their produce is sold. Property seizures and $1 million fines are being proposed for manufacturers, producers and distributors who fail to comply with regulations. The bill was introduced by Rosa DeLauro, whose husband is employed by Monsanto, the world’s leading producer of herbicides and genetically engineered seed. Monsanto wants their employee, Michael Taylor to be in government office to move forward with the bill. During the Clinton administration Michael Taylor was in charge of “food safety” where he forced genetically engineered growth hormone, rBGH on the United States. The bill would give Taylor power over what is done on every single farm in the country as well as power to wield farmers. Many believe this bill will be the end of organic farming, forcing all farmers to spray their produce with poisonous fertilizers to assure they meet Monsanto’s vision of healthy produce. This bill is currently in the beginning stages of legislation. Please research this bill and Monsanto, and express your opinion to local congressman Dean Heller. Here are some websites to get you started.

DILL WEED Written by Brittany Russell
B
otanically known as Anethum graveolens, dill weed is a member of the parsley family. It is native to the eastern Mediterranean region and western Asia. The leaves, flowers and oval flat seeds of the dill plant are all edible. The plant has thin, feathery green leaves, of which only about the top eight inches are used. Dill weed has a flavor similar to mild caraway or fennel leaves, often mistaken for this other herb. Dill weed contains the carminative agent, carvone, which has a calming effect and aids with digestion by relieving intestinal gas. Romans considered dill good luck and also used it as a tonic. Centuries ago, parents would give dill e ! seeds to children to chew during church th po s atn’s Exservices to keep them quiet and alert durme

ing long sermons. The word dill comes from the Old Norse word dylla, meaning to soothe or lull. The seeds are also high in calcium, with 1 tablespoon providing an equivalent of 1/3 cup of milk. Dill is said to promote lactation in nursing mothers and has been historically used as a weak tea given to babies to ease colic, encourage sleep and get rid of hiccups.
Dill Cultivation and Storage It is very easy to grow at home in the garden or in containers – if you grow your own, be aware that the mature seeds are toxic to birds. Fresh dill weed is widely available in the produce department of most markets. The leaves wilt quickly upon harvesting, but this will not affect flavor. Sprits whole stems lightly with a fine spray of water, wrap loosely in paper towels and place in a plastic bag. Store in the vegetable bin of your refrigerator. It should last up to a week and perhaps even longer. You can also trim the stems, place in a glass with an inch of cold water, loosely wrap the top with a damp paper towel and invert a plastic bag over the top before storing in the refrigerator. Fresh dill sprigs can be frozen for up to two months, but be prepared for it to darken a bit in color. No need to thaw it before using. Frozen dill weed will still have more flavor than dried dill. Dill seed is also available dried to use as a spice. Store dill seed in a cool, dry, dark place and use within six months for best flavor.

Kids AND
shoes (flexibility) Parents should encourage their kids to do a variety of activities so that they can work on all three elements. Endurance is developed when kids regularly engage in aerobic activity. During aerobic exercise, the heart beats faster and a person breathes harder. When done regularly and for continuous periods of time, aerobic activity strengthens the heart and improves the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to all its cells. Aerobic exercise can be fun for both adults and kids. Examples of aerobic activities are basketball, bicycling, ice-skating, inline skating, soccer, swimming, tennis, walking, jogging and running. Improving strength doesn’t have to mean lifting weights. Although some kids benefit from weightlifting, it should be done under the supervision of an experienced adult who works with them. Most kids actually do not need a formal weight-training program to be strong. Push-ups, stomach crunches, pullups and other exercises help tone and strengthen muscles. Kids also incorporate strength activities in their play when they climb, do a handstand or wrestle. Stretching exercises help improve flexibility, allowing muscles and joints to bend and move easily through their full range of motion. Kids look for opportunities every day to stretch when they try to get a toy just out of reach, practice a split or do a cartwheel.
Exercise
W
hen most adults think about exercise, they imagine working out in the gym on a treadmill or lifting weights. But for kids, exercise means playing and being physically active. Kids exercise when they have gym class at school, soccer practice or dance class. They’re also exercising when they’re at recess, riding bikes or playing tag.
The Many Benefits of Exercise Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. Kids who are active will: • have stronger muscles and bones • have a leaner body because exercise helps control body fat
• be less likely to become overweight • decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes • possibly lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels • have a better outlook on life Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test.

The Sedentary Problem The percentage of overweight and obese kids and teens has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Although many factors contribute to this epidemic, children are becoming more sedentary. In other words, they’re sitting around a lot more than they used to. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average child is watching about 3 hours of television a day. The average kid spends 5½ hours on all screen media combined (TV, videos and DVDs, computer time outside of schoolwork and video games). One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or playing video games. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children under the age of 2 watch no TV at all and that screen time should be limited to no more than 1-2 hours of quality programming a day for kids 2 years and older.
Raising a Fit Kid Combining regular physical activity with a healthy diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips for raising fit kids: • Help your child participate in a variety of activities that are age-appropriate. • Establish a regular schedule for physical activity. • Incorporate activity into daily routines, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. • Embrace a healthier lifestyle yourself, so you’ll be a positive role model for your family. • Keep it fun, so you can count on your child to come back for more.

A Rational Look at
DECLAWING PART ONE
From www.bornfreeusa.org
T
here are many myths, misunderstandings and strong opinions about declawing. If you are considering having this surgery done on your cat, or if your veterinarian has suggested it, please take a few minutes to learn about this major surgical procedure before you make a decision. Declawing is not a routine surgery and should never be done as a “preventive” measure. Despite their reputation for independence, cats can readily be trained to use a scratching post instead of the sofa, curtains or rugs. Using surgery to prevent or correct a behavioral problem is expedient, but it is not the wisest, kindest or best solution for your cat. Your veterinarian has an obligation to educate you as to the nature of the procedure, the risks of anesthesia and surgery, and the potential for complications.
Are claws important to a cat’s well being? Claws perform a number of functions for the cat. By scratching various surfaces, cats create a visual and scent identification mark for their territory. Claws provide psychological comfort through kneading, help the cat climb to safety or a secure vantage point, build strength, and help the cat fully stretch his back and legs. A declawed cat never again experiences the head-to-toe satisfaction of a full body stretch.
What is declawing? Declawing is the amputation of each front toe at the first joint (hind foot declaws are not commonly done). This is equivalent to you losing the entire tip of every finger at the first knuckle. Recovery takes a few weeks, but even after the surgical wounds have healed, there may be other long-term physical and psychological effects.

Why do people declaw their cats? • To protect furniture or other property • They don’t want to try to train the cat • Their other cat is declawed • To stop the cat from scratching them • Their friend or neighbor’s cat is declawed • They have always had declawed cats
Many people report that they are happier with their cats after declawing because it makes the cats “better pets.” Unfortunately, many people have also discovered – too late – that declawing frequently causes far worse problems than it solves. There is no way to know ahead of time into which category your cat might fall. There are other ways to solve behavior problems than radical and irreversible surgery. wenty-seven cats in Australia have developed a neurological disorder acknowledged to be due to the irradiation of ORIJEN pet food imported from Canada. Irradiation is the process of exposing products to radiation, generally for shelf life extension or sterilization. Australia now permits the irradiation of herbal teas, herbs, spices, nine tropical fruits, therapeutic goods, bee hives, animal feed and pet food. The Food & Drug Administration continues to approve more foods to be irradiated, and Canada acts accordingly. In an FDA pamphlet, “the FDA has approved irradiation of the following foods to enhance their safety: raw meat, raw poultry, shell eggs, seeds for growing sprouts, and herbs and spices. The FDA has also approved low-dose irradiation of foods to kill insect pests and to extend shelf life.”
Take Yourself From Flab to FAB!
Numerous scientific studies have exposed the harmful effects of food irradiation. Irradiation causes vitamin and amino acid depletion in food. It also changes the molecular structure of food forming toxic chemicals linked to cancer, organ damage, genetic mutations, immune system disorders, tumors, stunted growth, reproductive problems and nutritional deficiencies. (Public Citizen, April 2003) The illness recently seen in these pets showed that the consumption of irradiated products could be unsafe. However, consumers are unable to make informed choices due to the inadequate labeling regulations. Got Your Head on Straight? A LOOK AT POSTURE Written by Michelle Bean, DC
H
ave you ever been told you have one leg shorter than the other or noticed if one shoulder or hip is higher than the other, or if your head is tilted to one side? Have you felt that you are sitting or standing crooked? If so, don’t be surprised. You are among millions of people with Postural Distortion. Although posture is a major concern within our society, we need to really understand why good posture is important and how it influences health. Posture is dictated by two main factors: skeletal structure and the nervous system. The area of the upper neck contains the highest amount of nerves dedicated to postural control. Specifically, the muscles on the back of the neck that attach the upper two bones of the spine to the skull have up to 100 times more sensory receptors than any other muscle in the body, functioning to keep our heads straight and our eyes level. One of your body’s highest control centers, the brainstem, is located at the base of the skull and the top bone in the neck and connects the brain to the spinal cord. When the top bone in the neck, called C1 or Atlas, becomes misaligned it may put pressure on the brainstem. Even the slightest amount of pressure may affect any one of its major functions including posture, breathing, blood flow, alertness, emotions, pain sensitivity and muscle contraction.
The misalignment of the Atlas will cause the head to tilt to one side and the entire spine underneath it will react by twisting and turning in an attempt to return the head to a neutral position. This causes Postural Distortion. It creates tight and tense muscles that cause the hips to shift and rotate, and the shoulders to tilt. The muscles on one side of the body will contract causing one leg to shorten, throwing your entire body off balance. The implications of postural distortion and a C1 misalignment can be complex. Upper cervical chiropractors who focus on finding and correcting misalignments of C1 have found great success in relieving numerous conditions including: migraines, fibromyalgia, neck/back/knee pain, TMJ dysfunction, asthma/allergies, indigestion, and seizures among many others. By having the position of C1 corrected, patients have reported system wide effects because it influences the brainstem and all the nerves traveling between the brain and body. In fact, a recent research project found that restoring
the proper alignment of C1 in individuals with hypertension dropped their blood pressure equivalent to taking two blood pressure medications. Correcting posture is more important than simply sitting up straight, so important that it may help relieve and prevent chronic conditions. Take a look in the mirror – does one shoulder sit higher than the other, or do you appear to stand off kilter? If so, it may be time for you to seek professional consultation and treatment. Making Your Passion Your Business THE KEY TO MANIFESTING YOUR DREAMS Written By Dinny Evans

he idea that we create our own reality is the basic principle behind both Radical Forgiveness and Radical Manifestation. With Radical Forgiveness we learn to clean up the past and learn to deal with life on a daily basis. Radical Manifestation enables us to build the future we want. Manifesting is co-creating with the energy that runs through the Universe. It involves forming a partnership with this pure positive energy in order to take a dream and turn it into reality. In order to accomplish this dream, manifestation has a very important component, and that component is passion. Passion is not to be mistaken with a strong desire. Finding your passion means setting

aside all grudges, resentments, shadows, personal and social projections, enabling you to identify what you really want. Your energy will match with Universal Energy allowing your dreams to come true. The Law of Attraction tells us that what you think about is what you will attract. In other words, what you think is what you will get. Where is your energy taking you, to your dreams or to your fears? Much foundation work must be done first in order to find our authentic person and our authentic passion, which live in the belly of each one of us. The success of this process depends on you – are you willing to release the negative stories you have built about yourself? Are you experiencing emotional pain – are you willing to release it and find joy? It can be astonishing to identify our own addictions to chaos and drama. The technology of Radical Forgiveness as created by Colin Tipping and explained beautifully in the book Radical Forgiveness, Making Room For The Miracle, provides the tools and techniques to work through this process of peeling back the emotional layers that have been added throughout your story of life. It is a valuable first step in taking the journey of finding passion and identifying your dreams. Another question to ponder in regards to manifesting dreams is how to go about it; what comes first, passion or business. How Do You Take
Your Coffee? Written by Carol Christian
Coffee Colonics and Enemas are just one way to fend off illness by cleansing and detoxifying your body. Next issue we will discuss other cleanses.
F
rom inhaling truck fumes to taking overthe-counter drugs, over time, our bodies become receptacles for a multitude of unwanted toxins. Although we can consciously choose to avoid a number of these toxic stresses – alcohol, caffeine, junk food or cigarette smoke – in many cases we can’t avoid our exposure to other toxins, like unseen pesticides. We certainly can’t avoid breathing the air, no matter how polluted it may be. Toxins contribute to a wide range of ailments including fatigue, lowered immunity, depression, cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia, food intolerance, digestive diseases, allergies and asthma. The body has systems for removing toxins. Blood, for example, carries many toxins to the liver, where enzymes convert them into a water-soluble form so that they can be eliminated via urine or feces. Our bodies, however, were designed to convert “natural” toxins, not the toxins that are the result of human interference with nature. Since our bodies do not necessarily know how to release man-made toxins, we must be proactive. We must take steps necessary to help our bodies release these harmful substances. By cleaning out the digestive and elimination tracts –the colon, large intestine, liver, kidneys, skin, lung, gall bladder and lymphatic system – our bodies are able to release many of the poisons, metals, radioac-
tive materials and other toxic substances that have over-loaded our systems. There are a large number of products designed to cleanse and detoxify the body. To begin a cleansing program, you will want to choose one that first activates the removal of waste from your colon. If you try to cleanse your liver or blood without first removing the waste in your bowels, the excreted toxins will recycle back into your system.
Why Coffee Enema Cleansing Works The effects of a coffee enema are different than a saline enema. The most important difference between a saline enema and a coffee enema is the presence of caffeine in the coffee. Caffeine, theophylline and theobromine, combine to stimulate the relaxation of smooth muscles causing dilatation of blood vessels and bile ducts. The effects of having a coffee enema are not the same as drinking coffee. The enzymes in coffee, known as palmitates, help the liver carry away the toxins in bile acid. The coffee is absorbed into the hemorrhoidal vein, and then taken up to the liver by the portal vein. With the bile ducts dilated, bile carries toxins away to the gastro-intestinal tract. Simultaneously, peristaltic activity is encouraged because of the flooding of the lower colon. Thus, when the colon is evacuated, the toxins and bile are carried out of the body. Reference: 1. eng Shui is all the craze these days but the large-scale potential often goes unheard of. Traditional Feng Shui analyzes the energy of the environment and its influence on people. There are three key points to consider – the energy of the outside environment, the energy of the building itself and the energy flow within the building. Feng Shui is most effective when used to design such projects as cities, factories, business parks, shopping malls, condominiums, businesses and houses. Many famous corporations around the world, such as Disney, use traditional Feng Shui but few will share that knowledge with the public. It is used to improve sales, address staffing issues, reduce employee turnover, assign proper placements for individual departments and pin point management difficulties. For large-scale developments, the entry point of the energy determines the degree and extent of success the development will experience. Most developments and businesses that fail do so because they lack the right kind of energy. Good examples are a great restaurant that relocates to increase floor space and then closes its doors or a business that goes through a major remodel only to have its sales decrease substantially. Designers, architects and contractors have a significant impact on individuals and society through their designs. Houses built before the 1960s had simple designs that benefited people. Between the 60s and 80s home designs were more creative, creating unbalanced energy that was harmful to relationships, resulting in an escalation of divorces. Beginning in the 1990s through present day, home
When a couple designs and builds a house for themselves, they often integrate their personal energy, such as happiness or anger, into the house during construction. For example, if a couple is fighting during construction, they might make changes which have negative results, such as the home design, the placement of the front door, kitchen or bathrooms, or the inside floor-plan. The completed home will then reflect this fighting relationship energy forever and will affect whoever lives there. Using Feng Shui is like making a cake. It requires precise amounts of many ingredients and the spices used determine its flavor. There are many varieties, sizes and flavors and the extras like frosting and sprinkles that make it even better. To apply this analogy to a building, the goal of Feng Shui is to create the most positive environment possible. A good building with the wrong kind of energy is like a delicious cake drizzled with catsup. When it comes to designing a house or business, traditional Feng Shui can help you create that perfect cake; it can create lasting success for businesses and large developments. When buying a home or a business, it can help you choose a better building that breaks your cycles of financial struggles, relationship problems or health issues. Practically everyone can benefit from Feng Shui.
The Grand Scale of Feng Shui Written by Rebecca Moore
designs have negatively impacted one’s earning ability due to the lack of energy. Also, the number of bathrooms in a home affects one’s health; the more you have, the higher your chances of health problems. When individuals purchase a home, they do so based on their personal energy (qi), current situation and what feels comfortable to them. Therefore, that person’s home will match his or her own energy. Someone who struggles with finances or health issues will most likely buy a house with energy that creates more of the same. A couple with relationship troubles will generally choose a house that causes more tension and arguing.

Healthy Boundaries
Written by Terry Lowey

he ways that we act according to our boundaries gives illuminating information about our self-esteem and our view of the world. Few people fail to be unnerved by the stranger they just sat next to who unhesitatingly divulges intimate details of their life story, pouring it out like water through a sieve. Their conversation is not about connection, as they seem utterly unaware of impressions received or conveyed by the listener. This story teller seems to have no conception of boundaries at all – either of their own or of others’.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is the fear-laden individual who has pulled their armor-like boundary in tight. They give off clear signals, whether spoken or unspoken, to stay away. Their “No Trespassing” message comes across loud and clear. One is as invasive as an uninvited guest in your home while the other is resolutely determined not to cross paths in any way. Somewhere in between we find arrays of healthy boundaries. We can feel the comfort they generate as they exude selfrespect with an equal regard for others.

Examples of Healthy Boundaries: Mother Susan is grocery shopping with her son Ken, 3, perched in the shopping cart seat. As she stops to chat with a neighbor in the produce isle, Ken reaches over and grabs an orange from the display. Susan seamlessly responds with “thanks just the same, son, but we’re not getting that right now,” while she retrieves and replaces the orange. No over-powering indignation or other overreaction – seamless. Brittany the adolescent is screeching at fever pitch, awash in tears as she insists that she be able to spend the night at her boyfriend’s house. Her father resolutely stands his ground, adding that he will have no further discussion on the matter at all until she can address him in a level tone or voice. He is refusing to the futility of trying to problem solve with an escalated adolescent. Honoring his beliefs and comfort level with the decision he has made, he remains unmoved by his daughter’s attempts at forceful manipulation. He knows that “allowing oneself to be used or manipulated by another is not an act of love. It is, in fact, an act of
treason. You are allowing him or her to develop inhumane habits. Love says, ‘I love you too much to let you treat me this way. It is not good for you or me.’” Jake and Lyla are in love and have been living together for over a year. They get along well, have shared interests and seem to fit beautifully into each others lives. Because they talk openly about their likes, dislikes and plans for the future, Jake makes it clear that he adamantly opposes getting married or having children – ever. Lyla, 30, a vibrant woman with a career, and has always wanted both to be married and to have children. After deep introspection and clarification of their respective positions, Lyla makes the heart-wrenching decision to leave. As much as the love they share is true, each knows that to deny themselves on these core issues would rob not only themselves but each other. Through the act of leaving and discontinuing the relationship, Lyla is honoring both her boundaries and his. Julie and Kevin, like all of us, have times of struggle in their relationship. On one occasion, with a sense of overwhelm and anger he spreads his hand across her throat and moves her aside. Julie immediately calls 911 and leaves their home. She files a police report. Even after the heat of the moment has passed and Kevin begs forgiveness, Julie moves out and will only consider reconciliation after he has received a minimum of 6 months of anger management treatment. Julie is acutely aware that “where there are no boundaries the same bad decision has an opportunity to be repeated. If I do not make a statement about how their behavior affects our relationship this time, they will think that what they are doing is okay next time. This is about my need to honor their choices and honor myself.” Many believe, and indeed there is science to support that there is an interconnection between everyone and everything which ultimately connects all forms of physical matter. At the same time, we can see and feel the energy of the distinct boundaries that separate physical forms. We can consciously create many of our boundaries and choose to honor them
through our words and deeds. We can learn to develop a keen awareness of the boundaries of others and honor those as well. Some of these choices are extraordinarily difficult to make at the time. To be sure, we can imagine from the examples given that the more difficult the boundary choice, the more severe the negative outcome has the potential to be if that choice is not made. As we do this vital and dynamic boundary work, we can come ever
closer to achieving lives that flow with grace and ease. References: 1. Chapman, Gary PhD. The 5 Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate. Northfield Publishing, 1995. 2. Vanzant, Iyanla. One Day My Soul Just Opened Up. Fireside, 1998.

LECITHIN Written by Brittany Russell
L
ecithin is any of a group of yellowbrownish fatty substances occurring in animal and plant tissues, found in major organs like the heart, liver and kidneys. It is needed by every cell in the body and is a key building block of cell membranes; without it, they would harden. Specifically, lecithin protects cells from oxidation and largely comprises the protective sheaths surrounding the brain. It is composed mostly of B vitamins, phosphoric acid, choline, linoleic acid and inositol. Although it is a fatty sub-

stance, it is also a fat emulsifier. Hence, it supports the circulatory system. Though it is produced within our own bodies, we do not always consume enough of the foods that provide the nutrition needed to produce adequate amounts. Lecithin can be found in many foods such as cabbage, cauliflower, garbanzo beans, soy beans, split peas, organic meat, seeds, nuts and eggs. Today’s average diet, however, does not provide enough lecithin to successfully protect our cells. As a result, lecithin supplementation is necessary for overall health and prevention of many conditions and diseases. Of its many benefits, lecithin has been proven to decrease cholesterol, promote cardiovascular health, restore damaged livers and improve the brain’s memory function. One way lecithin aids in preventing or reversing certain diseases is that since it is mostly comprised of fat itself, it adheres to our cell and nerve linings, forming a sheath, and prevents cholesterol and other fats from sticking. Similarly lecithin intervenes with the body’s ability to form fat deposits and has aided in reversing the damage caused by coronary artery disease. By creating a slippery lining, it prevents large fat deposits from accumulating, allowing

the blood to flow more smoothly when it once was clogged with fat deposits that would lead to blood clots. When it breaks down the body fat, not only does it prevent the fat from collecting in large deposits in our bodies, it then transports it to the liver and converts it into usable energy. Lecithin is also known to repair livers that have been damaged by abuse such as too much alcohol consumption. Many studies have been conducted where people reported higher retention in learning and ability to recall information with an increase of lecithin. Even patients with Alzheimer’s disease reported an improvement in memory and orientation.
Dosage Lecithin supplements are produced from soybeans, meats and eggs and can be taken either as a liquid or as a capsule. Ten to 30 grams per day is a normal dose. Some side effects are known to occur when taking lecithin, so be sure to consult your physician before adding it to your supplemental regimen. Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and sweating. KEEPING IT STRAIGHT: Sleeping for Back Care
A
good night’s sleep is an essential part of back care. Not only does deep rest let your muscles relax, but also lying down relieves pressure on the intervertebral disks, enabling them to spring back into shape.
THE PERFECT BED Lots of people wake up feeling stiff and aching because they are sleeping on the wrong mattress. When buying a bed, consider the following points: • Choose a bed with a finely sprung mattress. If you sleep on your side, make sure there is enough “giveâ€? to enable the hips and shoulders to sink into the mattress slightly so that the spine stays in alignment. • Make sure that the bed feels comfortable: lay on it in your usual sleeping position for as long as possible to get an idea. • Choose a base that is firm or slatted. A bed base that sags or is springy can be harmful to your back and reduce the lifespan of your mattress. • Check that the bed is long enough for you: a good bed should be at least 6 inches (15 cm) longer than your height to enable you to move around comfortably. • If you are sharing the bed, make sure that it is wide enough to suit you both. You should both lie on it at the same time to check for space. If not, consider pushing twin beds together.
• Most people find lying on their side most comfortable. Placing a pillow between the knees helps to prevent the spine from twisting. • If you lie on your back, try placing a pillow under your knees to reduce any strain on the lower back. • Lying on your stomach means twisting your neck to one side or the other, so it is not a good position to sleep in. Placing pillows under one hip and leg can improve the alignment of the spine.
If you have a spring bed base, put a board under the mattress. It should be cut to the same size as the base and be thick enough not to bend under your weight – a board ž inches (2cm) thick is sufficient. Reference: 1. Davies, Kim. The Healthy Back. Parragon Books Ltd, United Kingdom 2006.

WHAT PILLOW? When you rest at night, you want to be in a position that keeps your spine as straight as possible. Using lots of pillows will push your neck out of alignment with the rest of the spine. If you lay on your back, you may not need a pillow. One, sometimes two pillows is usually sufficient to keep the spine in line if you are sleeping on your side. A special neck-support pillow is higher at the front to keep the neck in a good position; if you are using an ordinary pillow, push it well into the shoulder for a similar effect.

PMS Naturally
Written by Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD
I
f you or someone you love dreads ‘that time of the month,’ it’s usually because of Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS). PMS affects an astonishing 75 percent of women, with approximately 30 to 40 percent experiencing interruption of daily activities. Around 40.8 million women go through this problem every month. No wonder some women call it “the curse.”
• Cravings for sweets or salt • Bloating • Fluid retention & resulting weight gain
That’s quite a list, wouldn’t you say?
What are the symptoms of PMS? They can include: • Irritability • Anxiety • Depression • Low self-esteem • Weeping • Difficulty concentrating • Sleep problems
Aside from aspirin for the pain and possibly antidepressants for the mood swings, Western medicine can’t offer much in the way of help for this problem. And in any case these treatments don’t fix the problem, just make it somewhat easier to bear.
• Low energy • Aggression • Lack of Coordination/ Clumsiness • Loss of libido • Loss of appetite or excessive appetite
Natural Approaches That Work In Oriental Medicine, there are a number of symptom patterns associated with PMS. Most of these patterns include the influence of what’s called “liver qi stagnation” (gan qi yu). It’s helpful to note that what Oriental Medicine calls the “liver” isn’t limited to the physical organ you may be more familiar with. In addition to the actual organ itself, the concept of the liver includes the idea of a free and easy flow of vital energy in the body as well as more abstract concepts such as the ability to successfully make long-term plans. In liver qi stagnation this flow of vital energy becomes constrained, leading to irritability, anger, frustration, cramping, pain, loss of energy, etc. In fact, virtually every symptom listed above can come directly or indirectly from liver qi stagnation. The time before someone’s period isn’t the only time liver qi stagnation shows up, nor does it only show up in women. Plenty of men get cranky. But when a woman’s symptoms show up about a week or so prior to menstruation, the first consideration is looking for liver qi stagnation.

How Do We Treat This? Oriental Medicine typically treats PMS using acupuncture and herbal formulas. Both forms of treatment are very effective for reducing symptoms. More importantly, neither relies on potentially dangerous prescription drugs with their unwanted side effects. The acupuncture points, as well as the specific herbal formula vary depending on the exact pattern of symptoms. For example, we might treat points for liver stagnation (Liv. 2, 3) along with points that generally open up the flow of energy in the whole body (L.I. 4). If there is bloating or other digestive problem points that support healthy digestion can be used as well (St. 36, Sp. 9). Sleep problems accompanying PMS respond well to points that help settle the body and calm the mind (Ht. 7, Ki 6). Similarly, the best herbal formula for someone experiencing PMS depends on their symptoms. A classic and frequently used formula is Xiao Yao San (“Rambling Powder”). It helps release stagnant liver energy while also strengthening the blood. Another formula, Yue Ju Wan (“Escape Restraint Pill”) is especially effective when digestive problems accompany PMS symptoms. Regardless of how it shows up, PMS responds well to natural approaches. These approaches are worthwhile natural alternatives to drugs when you’re looking for relief.

Calcium Supplements... Written by Frank Shallenberger, MD, HMD

Calcium absorption is controlled by vitamin D, and calcium loss is controlled by parathyroid hormones. These systems work so well that a normal calcium balance will be maintained even in states of low calcium intake. Since vitamin D production is stimulated by sunlight, it is quite important to have adequate sunlight exposure in order to avoid low calcium states. Sunlight deficiency is a condition that is normally encountered only in the winter, in northern latitudes such as ours. Persons, who rarely go outside in the winter because of the cold, are at risk for this problem and the subsequent osteoporosis that develops. Office workers who go to and from work in the dark without getting outside during the day are also highly at risk. Sunlight’s ability to stimulate vitamin D production is impaired by glass, so it is important to actually go outside to receive its full benefits. The author of a definitive clinical review on calcium metabolism said it best, “Many official bodies give advice on desirable intakes of calcium but no clear evidence of a calcium deficiency disease in otherwise normal people has ever been given. In Western countries the usual calcium intake is of the order of 800-1000 mg/day; in many developing countries figures of 300-500 mg/day are found. There is no evidence that people with such a low intake have any problems with bones or teeth. It seems likely that normal people can adapt to have a normal calcium balance on calcium intakes as low as 150-200 mg/day and that this adaptation is sufficient even during pregnancy and lactation.”
any physicians are now telling their patients to stop taking all those calcium supplements that have been so widely promoted by the nutritional industry. There is an abundance of misinformation out there from the purveyors of calcium supplements that could cost you your life. And whether it’s coral calcium or oyster shell calcium makes no difference, because excessive calcium supplementation of any kind will have the same disastrous results. It’s hard bucking a system that is more motivated by profit than either science or common sense. Dr. Joel S. Finkelstein, an osteoporosis researcher at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, wrote that calcium supplements are “the biggest seller of the multibillion-dollar dietary-supplement industry.” In 2004, they grossed a whopping $993 million.
TAKING THEM!
Calcium Deficiency... It Doesn’t Exist There are several good reasons why taking a calcium supplement makes no sense. The first and most important is that although studies have verified low dietary calcium intakes in people eating the SAD (Standard American Diet) diet, true calcium deficiency in this country as is evidenced by it’s primary clinical manifestation a bone disorder known as rickets, is virtually unheard of. Even in studies of poor children, calcium deficiency is hard to find. The reason for this is that calcium is the only mineral with its own regulation system. When calcium levels fall the body compensates by increasing calcium absorption and decreasing calcium loss.

Reduce Your Calcium Loss Regarding the issue of calcium loss, clinical studies have overwhelmingly shown that the most effective way to reduce calcium loss is by performing regular weight bearing exercise, and limiting the intake of alcohol, sodas and coffee. These drinks promote calcium loss through the kidneys and frequently cause the formation of calcium stones. So in the face of a lifestyle that includes a half way reasonable diet, along with some sunlight and exercise, calcium deficiency simply does not exist. Even in primitive cultures where the diet may be less than perfect, the primary clinical sign of calcium deficiency (rickets) just is not seen, and osteoporosis is unheard of. Nevertheless, the food and supplement industry has done a really marvelous job at convincing women that they are sure to develop osteoporosis unless they take calcium supplements. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth. The only effective way to prevent osteoporosis besides diet, exercise, vitamin D and sunlight is with hormone replacement. In next month’s issue, we will discuss a definitive study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine that finally lays all this calcium hype to rest. Until next time, please remember that one of the most incredible mysteries of life is that God designed your body to heal itself. All you have to do is to help it. Unlike what is often heard in advertisements on TV and radio, and in grocery store magazines, readers of this column can be assured that they will only get genuine, unbiased information. Information that comes from a medical doctor with over thirty-five years of experience in alternative and nutritional medicine. Someone who doesn’t fall for every gimmick that comes down the pike; someone who only researches the peer reviewed literature; someone who actually sees patients for a living, and who is responsible for their health and well being on a daily basis. The opinions of Dr. Shallenberger are his own and do not necessarily reflect that of Healthy Beginnings. The reader is encouraged to refer to the references included in the article for further details. Dr. Shallenberger provides the information in this article for educational purposes only. A Healthy Liver
is Key to Graceful Aging (PART 2)
The Liver Filter – Your blood flows through the liver in a unique way so that it can filter out toxic matter such as dead cells, chemicals, drugs and particulate debris. This liver filter is called the sinusoidal system. It has specialized cells known as Kupffer cells that ingest and breakdown toxic matter. A healthy liver also removes a wide range of microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites that might be in your blood stream. When properly working, a healthy liver will clear 99 percent of the bacteria and other toxins during this filtering process. Like any filter, this system needs to be cleaned. Unlike the oil filter in your car, which you can remove and replace, the liver is a bit different. Although it can re-grow itself and can be transplanted, you really need to take daily steps to maintain its ability to filter, cleanse and detoxify you. Enzymatic pathways inside the liver cells metabolize every drug, artificial chemical, pesticide and hormone. It will be difficult for you to know what pesticides and hormones you might be consuming in your food supply unless you eat organic foods. But you can easily tell what drugs and artificial chemicals you are taking in. All of these must be dealt with by the liver. Now, that doesn’t mean going off your medication, but it does mean that for each medication you take you need to increase your support to the liver. Additionally, start reading the labels on your food packaging. If you’re eating fast food, then ask for the nutritional information for the products you are consuming. The greatest percent of toxins you ingest are going to come through your food in the form of artificial chemicals and additives.
Detoxification and Cancer!

hen you add nutritional deficiencies to the mix, you have a recipe for increased susceptibility to cancer. Proper functioning of your liver’s detoxification system is critically important for your body’s ability to prevent cancer. Many of the toxic chemicals that enter your body are fatsoluble. That presents a problem since they will only dissolve in fatty or oily solutions and not water. These fat-soluble chemicals are difficult for the body to excrete. If not handled by the liver they will be stored in fat tissue and cell membranes, which are made of fatty substances. These toxins can be stored for years.

Jungian Dreamwork Series:
Dreams & theAfterlife
(PART ONE)
“Life has always seemed to me like a plant that lives on its rhizome. Its true life is invisible, hidden in the rhizome. The part that lives above ground lasts only a single summer. What we see is the bloom, which passes. The rhizome remains.”
Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
(Carl Jung, from the prologue of Memories, Dreams, Reflections)
I
n last month’s article we discussed the Jungian view of depression as an opportunity for trans-formation of our worldview. Depression occurs when the natural flow of our life energy has become blocked, usually because certain aims or attitudes of our conscious mind, or ego, are at odds with our deeper self. (In other words, life is wanting us to move in one direction, but we want to move in another, or not at all.) The depression resolves when the ego surrenders its toonarrow standpoint, and allows the energy and wisdom of our deeper self to flow more freely. This sacrifice and humbling of the ego is often experienced as a defeat, or death, and is frequently symbolized as such in our dreams. Like Bill Murray’s character in the movie, “Groundhog Day,” sometimes we must go through many “deaths” before we learn how to truly live. The death/rebirth process is a core component of psychological development and is what guides the ego to its proper role as servant to the larger personality.

This article and the next also deal with the subject of death and transformation. But instead of the symbolic death of the ego, they deal with the experiences of people close to physical death and with the appearance of dead people in our dreams. The following stories are not meant to “prove” the existence of an afterlife, but they certainly challenge us to explore this possibility. Some things in life are known “directly” through the five senses, such as the color, taste, and texture of an apple. Other things, such as gravity, magnetism and the afterlife cannot be known directly, but are postulated based upon their effects. It is a basic principle of Jungian psychology that the other people in our dreams symbolize some aspect of ourselves that is like that person. So, for example, if you dream of a friend who has a good sense of humor, he/she probably symbolizes the same attribute or potential within yourself. The dream is using your associations to this person to tell you something about yourself. This general principle holds true whether the person we dream of is deceased or living. However, there are some dreams that we have of “the dead” where this line of interpretation may fall short. Examples include dreams and visions where we have an especially profound sense of that person’s actual presence, as if he/she is standing before us in the flesh. Probably the most frequent type of visitation shared by my clients over the years involve dreams and visions of a loved one checking in on them. Oftentimes the observer will catch a
glimpse of the deceased person standing at the foot of their bed as they are entering or emerging from sleep. At other times the interactions are more involved. An 85 year-old woman related, “I have occasional dreams of my husband. He hugs and kisses me, but only for a short time as it always seems like he’s in a hurry–like when he was in the Air Force–he can only visit a short time before he is off.” A few months after her husband’s death another woman experienced a fleeting vision of her husband in the hallway of their home, “He seemed very real. He said he was just checking in to see how I was doing. Then he disappeared.” Sometimes the encounters are tactile rather than visual. For example, one woman reported feeling her husband’s presence on the bed next to her, and experienced the bed to move at these times as well. A 65 year-old man tells of driving home from the hospital in great anguish having just witnessed his wife’s passing. “I felt her hand stroke my face while tears streamed down my cheeks. The sensation of being touched was quite palpable.” A 67 year-old woman felt the distinct sensation of a warm, moist kiss on her cheek as she lay in bed one night. She attributed it to the spirit of her beloved daughter who had died a few years before and over whose death she still grieved. On occasion, a favorite pet may make its presence known. A 45 yearold woman described seeing the ghost of her recently euthanized cat. She added, “I felt her spiritual presence in the room with me and could feel her rubbing up against my legs.” Occasionally the deceased come to admonish the living, as illustrated in this dream of a 72 year-old man whose wife had died three years earlier. He recalled: “Starla visited me last night and boy was she angry. She called me an ‘asshole,’ told me to stop drinking and moping around, and to get on with my life. She said that there are a lot of things I need to get done before I die.” In a similar vein, a woman in her early forties was redirected by her deceased husband to be more strict with their two teenage sons. “Don’t let them yank
your chain,” he urged her in a dream. Sometimes the figure of the deceased shows up to provide reassurance. A woman dreamed, “Twenty years after my mother’s death she appeared to me in a dream the night before an upcoming surgery. She told me not to worry, that it would come out alright.” Her mother’s presence was encountered again before another operation several years later. She dreamed, “Mom and I are in a car with her driving. We are going too fast down a mountain road and are about to drive off the edge, but she pushes me out of the car at the last second. She goes over the cliff with the car, but I am saved.” Both dreams provided reassurance at times of great anxiety for the dreamer. The last dream may even indicate a possible intervention by her mother in the outcome of her surgery. At the very least, it suggests that mother nature is going to give her another chance at life. There are times when the dead appear in our dreams to let us know that the spirit survives death. A woman dreamed of her recently deceased best friend: “Within a week of her death Barbara greeted me. She told me that she’s still alive and doing ok.” Another woman dreamed, “John [a good friend who had died the day before] visited me. I had been busy with friends and he didn’t want to disturb me. I tell him I’d like to see him now. He sits down in a chair across from me and lets me know he is fine. He looks healthy and happy, and we are able to visit for a little while before he must leave.” If we interpret these dreams as genuine visitations, then it is clear that the dead maintain their interest in and concern for those they have left behind. All of the individuals whose dreams and visions have been discussed above found their experiences to be healing and encouraging of faith in a world beyond this one. Sometimes the spirit of a dead loved one is specifically therapeutic, as shown in this dream of a 65 year-old woman whose oldest son, Chris, had died seven months earlier. Chris’s death ushered in a very dark time in Margaret’s life, marked by anger towards God and cynicism re-

garding the purpose of life. She dreamed, “Chris came to me. He told me he wanted me to plant a flower garden in my backyard. He said it will heal me and help me to remember how all life regenerates itself.” Evidently Margaret planted that garden and tended it well, for during the anniversary week of her son’s death she awoke with a single dream image: daffodils and tulips nodding gently in the breeze of a sunny spring day. ADD & ADHD What are they & what are the treatment options? Written by David Rovetti, DC
H
ave you ever been in a class or at a meeting and found you were having a very difficult time concentrating and paying attention? As your mind wandered, did you wonder if you had Attention-Deficit Disorder (ADD)? Chances are that this episode of inattentiveness was a result of being tired; a fluxuation of your blood sugar, or perhaps you had too many other important or pressing things on your mind. Imagine this loss of attention happening every day—happening not only while in a formal class or meeting, but during most waking hours and even while conversing with other people. This is ADD. Include the inability to hold still and, at the same time, having a compulsive urge to move about—this is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). Unfortunately, there are no objective medical tests to diagnose these disorders, so there is some controversy that these conditions even exist.
The general guideline for the diagnosis of ADD and ADHD versus an episode of inattentiveness is if it is frequent, intense and has a negative impact on a person’s life, then the label of ADD or ADHD is appropriate. The three hallmark impairments of ADHD are inattentiveness/distractibility, hyperactivity and impulsivity. ADD and ADHD are “spectrum disorders.” This means that the symptoms and causes range wildly from person to person. The number of diagnosed cases has increased 1400 percent in the last 25 years. These disorders affect about 3 percent of adults and 5 percent of children, is five to seven times more common
in boys than girls, occurs at every level of intelligence, runs in families, and it is more common with families with a history of depression and/or alcoholism. The good news is 50 to 60 percent of children will outgrow ADHD by the time they reach 20. The symptoms are more obvious when a person is requested to sit still and concentrate. Therefore, in the first few years of school the diagnosis is usually made. “Unable to focus,” “easily distracted,” and “short attention span,” are typical phrases used before the diagnosis ADD is made. “Difficulty holding still,” “hyper”, “disruptive,” “fidgety,” “a handful,” and “easily excited” are common terms used for people with ADHD. In grade-school years, the following symptoms of ADD and/ or ADHD are common: • Fidgeting with hands or feet • Difficulty remaining seated • Being easily distracted by extraneous stimuli • Difficulty awaiting turn in games or group activities • Blurting out answers before questions are completed • Difficulty in following instructions • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities

Adults with ADHD often have a compulsion to stay busy and on the go. They may find that they feel restless or nervous, and can’t seem to relax or slow down their thoughts. They may also have difficulty sleeping. They often just feel that it's impossible to get organized, to stick to a job, to keep an appointment. The everyday tasks of getting up, getting dressed and ready for the day's work, getting to work on time, and being productive on the job can be major challenges for the ADHD adult.
Evidence has shown that the lower portion of the brain know as the reticular activating system is not working correctly in those with ADD or ADHD. Other areas of the brain such as the inhibitory mechanism of the frontal lobes and cortex may also be affected. This brain impairment may possibly be caused by damage from trauma before, after, or during birth; or brain damage from toxins such as bacterial or viral, fetal alcohol syndrome, or heavy metals (such as lead). Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been proven to help brain function and repair damaged areas by providing up to ten times more oxygen to areas of the brain. In cases of ADD and/ or ADHD being caused by brain trauma or damage, HBOT is a safe and reasonable treatment option.
So, do you have ADD or ADHD? In school, if you had a fairly normal first and second grade experience, then you probably don’t have the disorder. No adult is diagnosed with ADD or ADHD unless he or she had symptoms before age 7 (there is no such thing as an adult-onset of ADD or ADHD). Try getting plenty of rest, exercising, eating right and avoid carbohydrates— you’ll be focused as can be at your next meeting! There are many treatment options for children and adults who truly have ADD and/or ADHD:
• Allergy elimination • Family counseling • Behavior training • Biofeedback • Massage • Chiropractic care • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

QUANTUM HEALING EXPLORING THE FRONTIERS OF MIND/BODY MEDICINE (New Edition)
BY DEEPAK CHOPRA, M.D.
A Book Review by
June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
Q
uantum is a word that has been bandied about in recent years and even used in commercials to indicate that the writer or firm understands and uses physics concepts. The term quanta describes the tiniest bits of matter/energy that seem to be interchangeable; bits which cannot be divided into smaller units. Deepak Chopra understood this concept as it applies to healing over 18 years ago when he wrote this book. At that time the healing power of the mind was considered very dubious here in the West. Since then millions of people have come to the understanding that their thoughts create their reality, not only in their outer daily affairs but in their bodies as well.

Deepak grew up in India and as a result was immersed in their Ayurvedic healing traditions. After training in both India and the U.S., he became chief of staff at New England Memorial Hospital in Massachusetts, has written over 50 books on health and healing, lectures all over the world and currently offers wellness programs at the Chopra center in San Diego. While working in New England, he realized that his patients’ thoughts and attitudes had much to do with whether or not they recovered. He explains that several of his cancer patients recovered completely after being pronounced incurable and given only a few months to live. He didn’t think they were miracles; rather, they were proof that the mind can go deep enough to change the very patterns that design the body. It can wipe mistakes off the blueprint, so to speak and destroy any disease – cancer, diabetes, coronary heart disease – that has disturbed the design. In the 1980s, Deepak went back to India to further study Ayurvedic medicine. He knew that the popular systems of Eastern medicine that have planted a few roots in the West, such as Chinese acupuncture and acupressure, were founded on Ayurvedic principles thousands of

years ago. He also knew that the ancient doctors of India were great sages, and their cardinal belief was that the body is created out of consciousness. Their way of treating disease went deeper than just the body, into the core of the mind. When you look at Ayurveda’s anatomical charts, you don’t see the familiar organs pictured in Gray’s Anatomy; rather, you find astonishing diagrams of where the mind is flowing as it creates the body. Chopra wrote Quantum Healing as his explanation of what is happening when the body cures itself of a previouslythought incurable disease. This book brings together the current research of Western medicine, neuroscience and physics with the insights of Ayurvedic theory to show that the human body is controlled by a “network of intelligence.” This intelligence is part and parcel of each one of the 100 trillion cells in our body. Harvard University has recently learned
that each cell is in effect a nuclear matrix, processing at 100,000 times per second. What astonishing beings we are! Research on spontaneous cures of cancer has shown that just before the cure appears, almost every patient experiences a dramatic shift in awareness. He knows that he will be healed, and he feels that the force responsible is inside himself but not limited to him – it extends beyond his personal boundaries, throughout all of nature. Suddenly he feels, “I am not limited to my body.” At that moment, such patients apparently jump to a new level of consciousness that prohibits the existence of cancer. Then the cancer cells either disappear or at the very least stabilize without damaging the body any further. This leap in consciousness seems to be the key. The word that comes to mind when a scientist thinks of such sudden changes is quantum, as in a quantum leap. Many cures that share mysterious origins – faith healing, spontaneous remission (which simply means ‘the body cured itself’), even placebos – point to a quantum leap. Why? Because in all of these instances, inner awareness seems to have promoted a drastic jump – a quantum leap in the healing mechanism. Perhaps these “miracles” are extensions of normal abilities – Chopra asks the question, “When your body mends a broken bone, why is that not a miracle?” Even bone-mending is a complex process that even modern medicine doesn’t fully understand. The reason why not everyone manages to take the healing process as far as it can go is that we differ drastically in our knowledge of how to mobilize it. Apparently the successful patients have learned to motivate their own healing, and the most successful have gone much further than that. They have found the secret of quantum healing. Chopra says, “Modern medicine cannot even begin to duplicate their cures, because no cure that relies on drugs and surgery is so precisely timed, so beautifully coordinated, so benign and free of side effects, so effortless as theirs. Their ability springs from a level so deep that you cannot go any
deeper. If we knew what their brains were doing to motivate their bodies, we would have the basic unit of the healing process in our hands.” The first half of the book is about the quantum itself – what it is, how it behaves. The second half then blends the quantum with Ayurveda, making a marriage of two cultures while trying to arrive at one answer. This is a brilliant ground-breaking book which was way ahead of it’s time, and this new edition is even more cutting-edge. The mind-body connection is not just a connection; the mind and body are inextricably intertwined as one, with thoughts, beliefs and awareness being the motivating forces. A healthy liver has two primary mechanisms for converting fat-soluble chemicals into water-soluble chemicals. This allows your body to easily excrete them through its two main pathways, which are bile and urine. The proper function of each pathway allows you to maintain a healthy liver.
Further observation reveals that concentrated sources of PUFAs are not readily available in nature. One tablespoon of sunflower oil, for example, contains the oil derived from roughly 200 to 300 seeds, an amount most people would have no desire to consume in one sitting. Healthier sources of fatty acids are either monounsaturated or saturated fruit-derived oils, like coconut, palm fruit, avocado and olive oils. These oils are less prone to rancidity when extracted without heat and stored properly. Fruit oils also happen to be more readily available in nature,

ASTROLOGICAL ALCHEMY ••• The Astrology of Self-Transformationsm
Monthly Health Outlook:
THE SUN IN Written By Robert Ayres
T
TAURUS
he Sun enters Taurus on April 19. This is the second sign that the Sun passes through in the spring season. It is a fixed earth sign that expresses as love of earth. The Bull rules the physical senses that connect us with our outer environment. We are attracted and intrigued by nature and the world. This results in the desire/love nature stimulating us to experience this fascinating realm. The fundamental key phrase for Taurus is I Want. This is the desire to possess the world in order to experience it. The Bull is one of the more creative, fertile signs of the zodiac. During the Sun’s journey through Taurus, nature bursts forth in new life. Humanity also feels a new sense of vitality and creativity. The world manifests the feminine principles of love and beauty. Venus, the planetary ruler of Taurus, is the goddess of these virtues. Life has the potential to be more enjoyable and
fulfilling now. From the physiological perspective, Taurus rules the neck. The neck contains the throat chakra and the larynx. These centers hold the mysteries of The Word. This creative ability to manifest through speech and sound is a power that will unfold more in the future. It can provoke a sore throat at this time. Venus has dominion over the kidneys. These organs are responsible for keeping the fluids of our bodies in balance. The kidneys can be more stimulated than usual now. Slippery elm and fenugreek tea can be helpful with these potential ailments. One of the most important qualities of Taurus is its rulership of money. As spiritual beings we are learning how to create wealth and abundance in our lives. The nature of life is abundance, but we each have our own issues with achieving this particular level of well being. Why is it that so many can barely survive and so few have so much more than they need?

TAURUS
THE SUN IN Our current economic crisis is bringing into question some of the underlying assumptions that form the basis of our monetary system. The overall distribution of wealth in the world is out of balance. Venus is also the planet of balance. It tells us that the ancient maxim, “moderation in all things,” is an important key to understanding our current situation. There needs to be balance between the spiritual and material, the inner and the outer, for true harmony to be achieved. Money is the medium of exchange that is the foundation of wealth and abundance in our economic system. It is under the rulership of Taurus and Venus. It is the vehicle for the desire

nature to express itself in the acquisition of goods. As spiritual beings, we must learn to master the physical dimension. Mastership of money and how to correctly create wealth and abundance is very important. It is based in creatively working with the world and the principle of right exchange. What you give is what you should receive and vice-versa. This applies to our exchange with people and with the Earth. Opportunities present themselves for addressing our financial issues during Taurus. The system is in a state of dysfunction. It has become frozen as a result of fear. This opens the door for us to try innovative approaches to healing some of the problems. The old patterns are not working. Now is a great time to get your personal financial house in order. Take advantage of the short-term upswing this spring and summer to get yourself in a better financial position. Overall, it should be a good month. THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. 2009 All Rights Reserved, Robert Ayres Robert Ayres is an internationally known astrologer with over 40 years of experience.
