COVER
PUBLISHER/EDITOR LETTER
STORY
Dear Readers, As I write this month’s letter, the Presidential election is only two weeks away. Anticipation abounds for the ever needed change that has been the mantra of this year’s campaign. Time will tell if what we have been promised will come to fruition. However, on an individual level, we can affect our daily lives in a positive way by being accountable for the lifestyle we choose. Adopting a healthy lifestyle involves many areas of our life. How we think determines our mental attitude, what we choose to eat and drink can also affect our physical and mental well being. Just these two areas alone have a dramatic impact on our physiology and ultimately how we view our world. This month, to assist you in living a healthy lifestyle, please find mouth watering recipes for squash, a refreshing pumpkin smoothie, and for you bread lovers, a gluten wheat-free sweet bread recipe from Lois Ehlers. What about our furry loved ones? Should we feed them from the holiday table? We have an eye opening article on, “What not to Feed Your Pets.” You will also find a variety of articles on personal growth and how to use green and sustainable building products in your indoor environments. As usual, we have a host of articles on natural health alternatives for brain fog, acne, and cholesterol. What about natural beauty … look ten years younger with the Green Peel®! To all of our readers and advertisers a happy and safe Thanksgiving Holiday from the Healthy Beginnings Magazine team.
CORN By Sara Piccola
D
omesticated from teosinte [tee-uh-sin-tee], a wild grass found in isolated patches in the Mexican western Sierra Madre. It’s estimated that teosinte was first domesticated around 4,000 B.C. Human sacrifices and grisly rituals involving corn were performed by some Native American tribes. This led conquistadors to relate corn to paganism and considered its consumption unchristian. Native Americans taught early settlers how to grow corn, thus saving them from the harsh winters to come. At one point corn was so valuable that settlers used it instead of money. If only some things never changed! Arriving in the U.S. around 600A.D., there are over 200 varieties of corn covering 70-80 million US acres. Corn holds industrial uses such as in ethanol, cosmetics, ink, glue, laundry starch, shoe polish, medicines, fabrics, corncob pipes, and ornaments. It is also enjoyed as a delicious treat. Corn is high in protein and carbohydrates. Frozen and canned corn has about the same nutritional value as fresh corn, and all corn is a good source of vitamin C, but only yellow kernels contain small amounts of vitamin A. The traditional favorite is sweet corn. Sweet corn is what we find in the supermarkets and at roadside stands. Other types include Dent corn, also known as Field Corn, used for livestock feed and industrial products. Flint Corn is the ornamental Indian corn, which ranges in color and primarily grows in Central and South America. Flour corn is used to make tortillas, corn chips, and baked goods, and of course, popcorn, the movie-snacking favorite. And let’s not forget the other favorite, candy corn –oops– we are a health magazine . . . never mind!
Best in Health and Happiness,

America’s Favorite Snack A Comparison of the Potato Chip By Brittany Russell
P
otatoes, second only to rice in the world’s food consumption, have become America’s number one snack food in its most popular form – a thin, salted, crisp chip. Invented by Native American, George Crum, in 1853 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., potato chips have endured a fantastic evolution: from thin and crisp to ruffled and flavored, even baked instead of fried. With such variety of flavors, textures and brands, how can the consumer narrow down their selection? A close look at the ingredient list, nutrition facts label and price tag are great places to start; Healthy Beginnings Magazine has even started the research for you! The following

is a comparison between three popular brands with different flavors and textures: Flat Earth Tangy Tomato Ranch, Kettle Chips Backyard Barbeque and Natural Lay’s Thick Cut. Flat Earth ($2.99) – 1-ounce, or approximately 12 chips: 130 calories, 5 grams of fat, 210 milligrams of sodium, 19 grams of carbohydrates. This product lists 36 ingredients which includes rice flour, potato flakes, corn oil, sugar, corn maltodextrin, dehydrated onion and sunflower oil. The label also states this food contains milk and soy ingredients. Kettle Chips ($3.39) – 1-ounce: 150 calories, 9 grams of fat, 170 milligrams of sodium, 15 grams of carbohydrates. This product lists 16 ingredients which includes potatoes, sunflower oil, honey powder, rice flour, salt, paprika, yeast extract and citric acid. Natural Lay’s ($3.79) – 1-ounce, or approximately 15 chips: 140 calories, 7 grams of fat, 160 milligrams of sodium, 17 grams of carbohydrates. This product lists three ingredients – potatoes, expellerpressed sunflower oil and sea salt. No preservatives. Depending on what one expects from their potato chip will determine which

brand wins. For HB purposes, Natural Lay’s Thick Cut takes the cake…or the chip. This brand’s simplicity makes it a winner, despite its larger price tag. With only three essential ingredients and no preservatives, Natural Lay’s provides customers with fewer carbohydrates and less sodium than its competitors. Because Natural Lay’s sunflower oil is expeller-pressed, a process in which the seed, grain or fruit is squeezed at extreme pressure, the oil retains its natural flavor, aroma, color and nutrients.
A quick look at sunflower oil: • 78 percent of sunflower oils contain linoleic acid: a member of the essential fatty acids, omega-6 • Light in taste and appearance • High in vitamin E, low in saturated fat • Shown to have cardiovascular benefits – when combined with low fat content, it may lower cholesterol and thus, lower the risk of heart disease • Helps to retain moisture in the skin So, take the potato chip comparison challenge, pick your favorite and enjoy! PROFILE
Gregor Johnson By Brittany Russell
G
regor Johnson, originally from Australia, has made his home in Reno since 1999. He has a 25-year background in marketing and product development, information systems and management. After toying with the idea of owning his own business, Gregor is now the only distributor for Elmore Oil in the U.S. “I always wanted to set up a business with a product I could believe in,” said Gregor. Gregor attributes his discovery of Elmore Oil to his father who still lives in Australia. “Over the years my father’s arthritis was slowly getting worse,” Gregor said. “In my lastest visit to see my father, I noticed that he seemed to suffer no pain, fingerstall was no longer an issue, his hands were not stiff and he could open jars.” Gregor asked his dad what he was doing to help his arthritis pain. His dad said it was Elmore Oil. Gregor was impressed and could see that Elmore Oil worked. Gregor began to research Elmore Oil by speaking to pharmacists in Australia, as well as speaking to the inflammation company directly. He found out that Elmore Oil is all natural and is a product that truly makes a difference in the lives of people suffering from pain associated with soft tissue. Elmore Oil excited Gregor, this is the product that he could be passionate about. Elmore Oil is Australia’s best-selling, all-natural topical pain reliever. It is so popular that the company
cannot keep the product on the shelves. Gregor has an M.A. and B.A. from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, in mathematics, English and philosophy. Over his lifetime Gregor’s careers have afforded him the opportunity to travel and live in great places, including Paris, England, San Francisco, Atlanta, Virginia, and of course, Australia—yet he chose Reno to be his home. Gregor has been in the US for 34 years now, arriving the day President Nixon announced his resignation. The move to Reno was Gregor’s 36th move in his lifetime, the first move he actually chose. Reno is his home and has met all
his wants and needs. “It’s small enough that you can see from one side to the other and meet friendly people. It has all you could ever want for entertainment and theater, ” said Gregor, “the climate is great and better yet, it’s five hours closer (by flight) to Australia.” He lives near the south end of Reno with his wife of two years, Holly. HEALTH BRAIN
Brain Fog? Memory Loss? The Hormone Connections By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
S
enior moments happen in children, teenagers, in men and women throughout all stages of life. Was it ADD or could it have been the waffles with syrup and jam for breakfast? Normal brain functioning can be impaired by life habits, toxic exposures and inherited or acquired hormonal imbalances. Fortunately, there are many positive steps to repair and rebuild foggy brains and fading memory.
concentrations in the brain. PMS is no laughing matter. When there is a relative estrogen excess and progesterone deficiency it can cause a host of symptoms including foggy brain and memory loss as well as fatigue, irritability, menstrual cramps and rarely, homicidal behavior. Fortunately, safe, topical progesterone (not the dangerous progestin) is available over the counter and can be applied from day 12 through 26 of the menstrual cycle and usually completely eliminates PMS and cramps by the second menstrual cycle.
Some people come into the world with weak adrenals (chief stress modulating and energy giving glands on top of the kidneys) inherited from their mother causing them to be much more reactive to stressful events during their whole life. This causes poor blood sugar control that manifests in many ways and especially can cause low energy and difficulty with focus, concentration and memory. Eating a high protein diet, avoiding sweets, carbs and bread can help maintain brain power. Also eating good sea salt with lots of minerals and supplementing vitamin C and B vitamins, (especially B5) helps the adrenals to cope and give steady energy to the brain. Adrenal cortex supplements taken through the day also support the brain’s energy and are great for clear thinking.
Menopause not only causes progesterone deficiency but also estrogen deficiency. Around perimenopause estrogen levels can go up and down quickly and some women feel they are losing their minds. On some days they can feel normal and on others have terrible forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating along with mood swings and crying jags for no reason, added to hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Topical, natural estrogen patches or gels can be safely administered along with supplementation of cruciferous vegetable concentrates to help with proper elimination of the estrogen along with the progesterone cream to avoid unopposed estrogen replacement.
Women have the additional challenges of fluctuating hormone levels throughout life which can cause the brain to swell and reduce oxygen and blood sugar

Alternate Choices in
TIRED OF
Assisted Living
A
s we plan for the future, not only for ourselves but our loved ones as well, there are a host of options for senior living. What comes to mind for many are the standard nursing and adult living homes. Here are some options to consider:
Age Restricted Communities Senior communities are similar to any other community but are age restricted, usually 55 and over. Most communities offer amenities, activities and services that cater to residents.
LIVING IN PAIN? LOST YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR LIFE?
ECHO Housing Elder Cottage Housing Opportunity, or Granny Flats, refers to a housing opportunity where seniors occupy a second apartment or family living unit with another family. They are permitted by the jurisdiction to foster affordable housing, or aid families with elderly parents who are not able to live completely alone. These can be in an urban setting, on the beach, or in the country.
Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC’s) Communities designed for active seniors offering an independent lifestyle and private home. Regardless of future medical needs, they provide the availability of multiple levels of care. These communities are also found in various relaxing settings.
Senior Short Term Housing (Vacations or Snowbirding) Senior Short Term Vacation Housing offers seniors the chance to try a living situation before they buy. It allows one to take advantage of a senior community in a distant location.
Senior Resort Living Community
END PAIN NOW
with Prolozone Therapy™ Prolozone® is a safe, effective, natural injection technique developed by Dr. Shallenberger. Prolozone® uses the power of oxygen to stimulate the body to heal itself and end the cycle of pain. Learn more about Prolozone Therapy™ at:
Senior Resort Living Communities allow for an independent lifestyle with an all inclusive villa apartment-style living. They usually provide restaurant style dining, transportation, weekly housekeeping programs, activities and programs.
www.antiagingmedicine.com
Nursing Home Nursing homes offer 24-hour a day care for those who can no longer live independently. They are equipped with medical professionals and supplies to offer specialized care to those with serious illness or injuries. Nursing homes also have a long list of services they provide such as physical therapy, activities, and medical care. As you can see, there are a variety of options to consider for senior living. Before making a decision, one should explore the availability of choices based on what’s important to you and how you’ve lived your life. If you’ve spent your life in the country, explore options that will provide this same environment. teacher plays a game with his middle school children that they call ‘Bummers to Blessings.’ He asks one child to think of something unfortunate. The child responds with “Oh no, I dropped the carton full of eggs!” The next child has to find the “silver lining.” This child responds with, “Let’s make omelets for lunch.”
f o r e w o P The
The teacher’s class tended to get easily upset over small things that happened. One week they were eagerly anticipating a class outing, but the morning of the outing the school van broke down and the trip had to be cancelled. The teacher discovered the value of his game when he told the children the disappointing news. Instead of the complaints he feared, the children responded immediately with suggestions for other fun activities they could do. A grateful person sees the positive in every circumstance. Feeling gratitude is a deliberate attitude of the mind that is empowering.
e d u t i t a r G
Self-pity, blame, resentment, jealousy and other negative thoughts and attitudes keep our vision narrowly focused on our own small world. Gratitude expands the heart and opens the door to life’s beauty and to a world of possibilities.

By Anandi C
When we look for things to feel grateful about, the list is endless—from the tiniest breath we take to the perfection of a recent challenge to our inner peace. When we focus on life’s disappointments, the list can also be endless. The choice is ours. One attitude makes us feel calm and happy, the other makes us moody and unhappy. We can challenge ourselves, as the children did, to cultivate a grateful response to all that happens. Then gratitude becomes habitual and frees our energy to be in harmony with the great flow of life. For more info, contact Anandi Cornell, Teacher at The Expanding Light Retreat, at (800) 346-5350. What was once thought of as a teenage problem is now understood to effect all ages, from the very young to the senior population, and all ages in between. The person inflicted with acne, through a genetic accident has a defect in the structure and working of the skin that makes the pores work differently than their “clear skinned friends. So now we know that while some “teens are able to finally grow out of the “acne phase, others are in a constant battle with this disease at various times throughout their life.

The number one aggravating factor is definitely stress. The fight or flight reaction causes a hormonal surge of testosterone to be released which is a big stimulator of acne. This explains why the level of acne is much more constant for men and why it fluctuates widely with women.

CONSCIOUS HEALTH
Relieve Winter Blues with Oriental Medicine By Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD
W
inter Blues (including Seasonal Affective Disorder) affects an estimated 10 million to 12 million people in the United States every winter. It often starts between September and November, and can extend into late April. Symptoms include sleep problems, tiredness, overeating, depression, social withdrawal, emotional reactivity, loss of sex drive and mood swings. Sufferers may also experience lowered immunity and be more likely to come down with a cold or the flu.
opposites. Some examples of this include day and night, male and female, and of course, summer and winter. Another way of talking about these complementary opposites is using the concept of yin and yang. If you’ve ever seen the image that looks like two fish swimming around each other inside a circle, that’s a graphic representation of this idea. The qualities within yin and yang are extensive, but here is a short summary: Yang refers to warmth, taking action, brightness, abstraction and expansion. Summer is a yang time of the year.
Western medical treatment for these symptoms typically includes counseling and prescription anti-depressants. Although for some people these can be effective, some also experience unwanted side effects. Another modern approach involves sitting in front of strong, fullspectrum lighting every day during the winter months. Oriental Medicine takes a different approach for this problem. This approach comes from the idea that human beings are an inseparable part of nature. This means we all participate in the natural cycles of the day, month and year. Symptoms such as winter blues happen when we fight these natural cycles and go against them. To understand how Oriental Medicine treats winter blues you need a bit of background information. One of the old classics of Oriental Medicine, “The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Medicine” (Huang Di Nei Jing), emphasizes the idea that all natural, healthy aspects of life are composed of pairs of complementary

Yin includes the experiences of coolness, resting, darkness, solidness, and contraction. Winter time is a yin time of year. As you can see, if we were following nature’s rhythm, we would be relaxing and resting during the winter months. It is a time when we have the opportunity to consolidate the growth from the previous year and prepare for the next year’s growth in the spring. However, in modern times we are more removed from these natural rhythms. Instead of resting, we often increase our activity levels in late fall. Starting with Halloween and Thanksgiving, we not only do more, but our stress levels go up as well. We rush around, eat excessively sweet and fat-laden foods, and find ourselves dealing with exposure to more extreme weather changes. It’s not a lot like resting and relaxing, is it? And when we’re out of harmony with the season this way, our bodies and minds 14

are out of harmony as well. That’s why Oriental Medicine treats winter blues by helping to restore harmony with nature. This is accomplished using acupuncture to rebalance natural energy flow within the body, herbal medicine to support rejuvenation and healthy balance and specific exercises that help harmonize the body with seasonal energies. Of course, there are also things you can do yourself during this time of year. For example, you can: • Take more time to rest and relax as the days get shorter • Participate in activities that rejuvenate your mind and body • Start reviewing what you’ve accomplished during the year • Stop and breathe more often • Eat mostly whole, fresh foods in their natural form As simple as these ideas sound, they can have a profound impact on improving your winter blues. Even better, you don’t
need to spend a lot of money or do anything unusual to get the benefits. If you follow all of these and still find you’re feeling more ‘down’ than usual, consider visiting a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (OMD) to help you return to feeling bright and chipper during the holidays. PAPRIK A By Brittany Russell

ts color – bright red; its flavor – typically mild and sweet: Paprika. Made from the dried, ground pods of capsicum annum, a sweet red pepper, paprika is often used as a ‘sweeter’ heat to foods, mixed in sauces, on a variety of meat and dusted on the ever-popular potluck dish, deviled eggs. Paprika is primarily produced in Spain, Central Europe and the United States. Although both Spanish and domestic paprika are mild and sweet in flavor, several important differences exist. Domestic paprika is characteristically fresh, green and vegetable-like, while the Spanish paprika exhibits a more fermented and piquant flavor. Historically, the Central European varieties were more pungent, but they now exhibit sweetness similar to Spanish paprika. Paprika originated in Southern Mexico, Central America, and the Antilles Islands, where Native Americans used it for healing and seasoning. Christopher Columbus returned from the New World with unknown spices with a never-before-seen present: a paprika plant. At first, the plants were used to decorate baroque gardens of nobility in Europe. From Turkey via trade routes, paprika came to Hungary through the Balkans. In the second half of the 16th century, Margit Széchy, a noble lady already had a plant in her garden called the Turkish pepper. The name ‘paprika’ came from the 18th century as a diminutive form for the south-Slavic name of pepper (papar). The word ‘paprika’ became universal and international only after its Hungarian usage. Though it is a typical spice in Hungarian cooking, it was first used as a cure for intermittent fever.

As an antibacterial agent and stimulant, paprika can help normalize blood pressure, improve circulation, and increase the production of saliva and stomach acids to aid digestion. Paprika is unusually high in vitamin C. The peppers used for paprika contain six to nine times as much vitamin C as tomatoes by weight. Pound for pound, it has a higher content of vitamin C than citrus fruit. High heat leaches the vitamins from peppers, thus commercially-dried peppers are not as nutritious as those dried naturally in the sun. The spice is principally used to season and color rice, stews and soups such as goulash. In many countries paprika is also used in the preparation of sausage—mixed with meats and other spices. Paprika may also be smoked for additional flavor.
Storage and Cooking Tips Paprika should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, preferably the refrigerator. Rather than paprika in a glass bottle, choose the one in the tin which will protect the contents from damaging light. As with most ground spices, paprika will lose its flavor and potency with age. Use it or replace it within six months for best results. Be aware when Hungarian paprika is specified in a recipe: find a mild, sweet variety, preferably imported. Spanish paprika generally imparts a much spicier heat to foods. Be sure to check labels to ensure you are getting either the “sweet” or “hot” type that you desire. However, even labels can be confusing. For example, the Hungarian “rose” or “sweet rose” variety is spicy to the palate, although not as hot as cayenne. Experiment with different types of paprika, you can start with this delicious salmon recipe!

Brain Fog? Memory Loss? The Hormone Connections Continued from page 10. Andropause, male menopause, happens more slowly than menopause in women and is sometimes more difficult to pick up. It is usually associated with a drop in testosterone levels which can be measured in the blood. This sometimes happens in younger men especially if they are on a lot of medication. They can become apathetic, forgetful, lose motivation and sex drive and, of course, become grumpy old men. These brain changes can be easily and safely reversed with testosterone cream and a thorough physician workup for any serious prostate problems. We can’t neglect the thyroid gland as a chief suspect in causing brain fog and memory impairment. Many people, especially women after childbirth, can run borderline low or hypothyroid (the blood test is only one of the many ways of determining low thyroid functioning). It can cause memory impairment, slow speech lethargy, apathy and listlessness. Replacing a little thyroid hormone with attention to life habits that block the thyroid, such as soy, fluoride, chlorine, bromine and cruciferous vegetable consumption, plus reducing exposure to plastics, metals and radiation can improve the brain remarkably. Thyroid controls all the DNA, RNA and mitochondria in the body (energy manufacturing plants in the cells). Hormone imbalances can certainly cause brain fog and memory loss. In the next issue of Healthy Beginnings watch for an article on brain fog and memory loss in relation to blood sugar and food sensitivities. References: 1. Speroff L, Glass R, Kase N. EMOTIONAL WELLBEING
Healing Negative Emotions

O
ctober has been quite a ride, with the election nearby and the erratic fluctuations in the financial world and the stock market. For many of us, this has put anxiety on high alert, and in turn a tremendous strain on us emotionally and physically. Late autumn too can be a time of pain and unrest, as unresolved emotions put aside during the summer months become harder to ignore. Many of us too have lost loved ones this past year, and are still grieving their loss. With Thanksgiving approaching this can become the perfect time to honor them, and remember the place they filled in our lives and the place they took at the Thanksgiving table. It’s also a good time to express gratitude for what we have, to cherish our family and friends, our physical and emotional wellbeing, and our continued enjoyment of the simple things in life. Regardless of what else is going on, Thanksgiving is really about having abundance in the heart. So what can we do to increase this heart filled abundance? The best thing we can do is heal our own negative emotions. Negative emotions reduce our happiness and the happiness of those around us. It’s not just the negative emotions that we know about, it’s also the suppressed, negative emotions that cause problems from the subconscious level. Some of these emotions may have their origin in traumatic past experiences. Even though the past is over, many still harbor these feelings and emotions. As most experts will tell you, trauma and old emotional wounds are “frozen” in the body. There is a gentle way to get in touch with these old wounds and heal them; not by reliving them, but by pleasurably resolving them. There is a simple skill you can learn to do yourself that brings breath and focused awareness together to empower you to heal all your negative emotions forever. Since 1979, Vivation has helped thousands of people heal their anger, guilt, depression, anxiety, envy, fear, phobias, sadness, grief, shame, jealousy, and other unpleasant feelings.

Altering your surroundings also could have a huge impact on your ability to relax. Aromatherapy oils are a popular folk remedy in helping people fall asleep. The scent of English lavender, for example, is believed to have sedative qualities—and the best part is that it tends to work quickly. Lavender has proven to lengthen total sleep time, increase deep sleep and leave you feeling refreshed. Try putting a lavender sachet under your pillow or place one to two drops of lavender essential oil in a handkerchief. You also can add several drops of lavender oil to a bath—the drop in body temperature after a warm bath also helps with relaxation and sleep. Other effective aromatherapy oils include chamomile and ylang ylang.

Looking beyond the senses—some believe furniture arrangement could interfere with favorable energy flow, ultimately impacting sleep. Practiced for thousands of years, this ideology known as Feng Shui is the Chinese system of living in harmony with the natural elements and forces of earth. Feng Shui experts suggest the positioning of the bed is of the utmost importance. The head or feet should never face toward the door. Placing the bed diagonally in the room is excellent if space allows. Otherwise, the head should face north or east. Other things to keep in mind—avoid placing the bed in the corner of the room where energy tends to be stagnant; and steer clear of putting the bed next to a window where energy can be drained. If this can’t be avoided, hang an opaque curtain on the window. A clear view of the entrance to the room also should be maintained. If this can’t be done directly, hang a mirror to reflect the entranceway. Also, try to avoid facing sharp corners from desks, bookcases and other pieces of furniture.

Jungian Dreamwork Series:
Children’s Dreams (Part II)
By Andy Drymalski, EdD
L
ast month’s article pointed out that a major psychological task of childhood is the development of a strong ego. A strong ego should not be confused with a “big ego,” egocentricity, willfulness, or arrogance. “Ego strength” is a psychological term that describes the resilience and structural integrity of the conscious mind/identity. A person with a healthy ego is able to tolerate frustration and negotiate life’s challenges with resourcefulness and optimism. A person with a weak ego, on the other hand, is more likely to become overwhelmed and demoralized by the demands of life. One way that the psyche develops a strong ego in children is by providing dreams that challenge them to defend and stand up for themselves. Dreams of scary animals and monsters are quite common among young children. The following are examples: “A tiger was in my bed and wouldn’t leave.” “A rhinoceros was in my bed and tried to bite me.” “I was at a playground with my brother when some bears came and started to destroy everything.” “Sixteen monsters were chasing us. They had spiky legs that poked you, and their faces, necks, and chests were covered with feathers.” “Werewolves were outside my window trying to get in.” “A goblin with sharp teeth and claws came out of my closet and tried to attack me.”
often contain a mixture of human and animal features. Thus, they also represent undeveloped and undisciplined instinctual energies. To battle and tame these creatures is, symbolically, to harness and transform primitive energies so that they can be used in the service of the larger personality. Untamed, such impulses tend to bowl over the ego, giving rise to childish and/ or destructive behaviors. The Greek myth of “Heracle’s Twelve Labors” is an insightful allegory regarding the process of personality development. The story begins tragically as the powerful young Heracles kills his family during a night of wild drunkenness. [This event indicates that although he was a grown man physically, Heracles was still a child when it came to the management of his passions.] As punishment, he is condemned by King Eurystheus to seven years of servitude. During these years he is given increasingly difficult tasks to fulfill, most of them involving battle with dangerous animals, e.g., a giant lion, a wild boar, flesh eating birds, the mad bull of Crete. [Symbolically, life is challenging Heracles to wrestle with his animal nature so that its wisdom and energy can be harnessed and channeled into life-giving pursuits rather than destructive ones.] Heracles’ last two labors are to obtain the jeweled belt from the queen of the Amazons, and apples from a magical tree located at the “end of the world.” In order to accomplish these tasks, however, he must battle a thousand angry female warriors for the belt, and a dragon that never sleeps for the apples. The belt is a symbol of the feminine (his anima), and the apples, as in the biblical Genesis story, symbolize
...we tend to more fully appreciate those things that we have sacrificed and struggled for.
One of the first tasks of childhood is learning to tame one’s passions and instinctual impulses. Animals, as discussed in the September article, are frequently used as symbols of our instinctual drives. In their negative aspect, they may symbolize things such as anger, greed, aggression, and jealousy. Monsters

consciousness. The message of the myth is that personality development–growth in consciousness and deepened relationship to one’s soul–involves battle with regressive and resistive forces in one’s inner and outer life. Although often painful to endure, such battles can be good for us; we tend to more fully appreciate those things that we have sacrificed and struggled for. A young boy had a series of frightening dreams involving sharks. One of them went as follows: “I am swimming in a lake when two sharks come after me. I swim as fast as I can to get away from them, and wake up before they get to me.” Sharks are cold-blooded predators. They usually symbolize regressive forces within a dreamer’s life that would suppress his spirit and development. Examples might include self-critical thoughts and feelings of worthlessness, or hurtful and dispiriting interactions with peers, teachers, or family. In this case, the boy had an older brother who picked on him and made him feel bad about himself. His parents were able to address the situation from several angles. First, they intervened with regard to the older brother’s behavior. Second, they helped the young boy recognize the falseness of his brother’s comments. Third, they taught him how to both ignore and, alternatively, stand up to his brother. Throughout the process they worked with him using the imagery of his dreams. One way to help a child deal with the frightening people, animals, and other creatures in their dreams is by re-enacting portions of the dreams. In the example above, the father had his son pretend to be a shark while he playfully took on the role of a frightened swimmer. This made the boy laugh and reduced some of his fearfulness. In another enactment, the father played the aggressive shark while his son fought back using the kicks and punches he had been learning in karate. Through this process, the boy’s dreams became less frightening and his behavior within them more assertive. Here is the
final dream of the series: “I was at the ocean when a shark swam up and tried to scare me. But I kept my eyes on the horizon and wasn’t scared. Then more sharks came and tried to scare me with their numbers, but I again focused on the horizon and wasn’t scared. Later in the dream, I taught another boy how not to be scared by sharks.” Focusing on the horizon symbolizes the establishment of a stable perspective. No longer was the dreamer so easily thrown off balance by his brother’s hurtful comments or the negative thoughts that scavenged about his own unconscious. In addition to therapeutic re-enactments of dreams, children can be helped to compose a story or draw pictures in response to frightening dream events. The story or picture(s) should include successful and empowering responses to the dilemma or threat presented in the dream. It is helpful that children be allowed to discover their own solutions whenever possible. However, if they seem stuck or overwhelmed by the task, then it may be necessary to offer some suggestions. Sometimes they may even be able to dialogue with the dream creature, i.e., ask the monster why he wants to scare them, or the bear how they can be friends. If you can convey a sense of confidence in their abilities, and a genuine curiosity and playfulness with the process, you will be giving them a great gift. A child that has developed an open and fearless relationship to his or her unconscious typically carries a similar orientation to life. In next month’s issue, I will take a closer look at the nature of consciousness. References: 1. Garfield, Patricia. Your Child’s Dreams. Ballantine Books, NY 1984. 2. TRAVEL
A Thanksgiving Staycation By Sara Piccola
Heavenly Ski Resort
T
hanksgiving is a time for family, feasting, and a much needed vacation. Many will travel hundreds of miles to meet with family and relatives to share the experience of home and hearth. However, for some the idea of a Thanksgiving holiday doesn’t mean cooking a huge meal and having to entertain on our days off. This month we’re recommending a Thanksgiving getaway to the mountains, where family, feasting, and vacation are all incorporated. The whole point of a “staycation” is getting a vacation without going far from home. Pack up the family to enjoy some good food, good times, and get a jumpstart on the ski season!
The Village at Squaw Valley Squaw Valley Ski Resort is expected to open November 22, weather permitting, of course. Get in some early season ski runs during the day and then feast on a delicious Thanksgiving meal while overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe from High Camp, the top of a 2,000 vertical foot cable ride.
For some exercise, walk around The Village and visit the 19 unique shops. Indulge in a spa treatment from Trilogy Spa or create your own candles at Waxen Moon. There’s plenty of entertainment to help you relax and enjoy the holiday season, mountain style.
Northstar Village and Resort The Village at Northstar is one of the finest mountain villages in North America. From luxurious condominiums to shopping boutiques, cafes, restaurants and much more; there’s something for everyone. Join the village for live music, special events, holiday festivities, shopping and even beading. During Thanksgiving week you can relax with Tai Chi, Yoga, and Acupuncture from Balance Holistic Health Center. A Thanksgiving meal can be enjoyed at any of the surrounding restaurants and of course the mountain will be open, showcasing the first ski runs of the year.

Is it heaven or is it earth? Head a different direction to Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The Gondola to the top of Heavenly re-opens in November, the ride offers breath taking views for the whole family. Once at the top, enjoy sledding, a zip line, and other family activities. With the number one snow making technology in the United States, Heavenly Resort should have no problem reaching their tentative opening date of November 23rd, just in time for the holidays. Once you’ve built up an appetite on the slopes there are several restaurants recommended for a satisfying Thanksgiving meal. Try the Chart House, a steak and seafood restaurant located on Kingsbury Grade overlooking the lake. You could also head into town to Riva Grill. Riva is located on the water; it doesn’t get more beautiful than that. Head out to the Beacon Bar & Grill for another lakeside meal or to any of the casinos for a Thanksgiving buffet. If you just can’t imagine Thanksgiving without cooking a turkey dinner for your loved ones then check out the Marriot in South Lake Tahoe. Suites come with a full kitchen and are located next door to Raley’s Supermarket, talk about convenience! Bon Appetite. Even though we only have a few days off to celebrate, Thanksgiving brings to mind delicious smells, family snuggles and hugs, board games, laughter and being with those we love. So, gather up the family and head to Tahoe to enjoy Thanksgiving in the mountains and kick off the ski season! Eat, give thanks, and enjoy! n important part of health and wellness is “staying connected” and in touch with friends and family. Untreated sensorineural hearing loss (partial deafness) often results in less contact and interaction by the affected individual. This is most often a very gradual process of withdrawal from communication situations. The patient with untreated sensorineural hearing loss tends to avoid meetings, group situations and conversations. Many listening situations become increasingly difficult, less enjoyable and at times embarrassing. Patients often report that they are constantly struggling to “keep up” with the flow of conversation and end up nodding and smiling and essentially guessing at how to respond. At some point, communication becomes very difficult and stressful. Listening is effortless for those with normal hearing and we tend to take this for granted. Individuals with partial sensorineural hearing loss are working very hard to hear and understand. They are missing certain key words and constantly have to try to “figure out” from context what was said. Lip reading certainly helps, but eventually the hearing impaired individual is forced to gradually withdraw from difficult listening situations. Feelings of isolation, frustration and anger can develop.
ing loss can be helped with either medical/surgical intervention or hearing aids. There have been substantial breakthroughs in hearing instrument technology over the past few years with the advent of digital signal processing and the ability to match technology with an individual’s lifestyle and specific communication needs. Instruments are now very inconspicuous and most of the previous problems associated with hearing aids have been solved. Hearing loss is nothing to be ashamed of. If you or someone you know has a hearing problem you are encouraged to seek help from a hearing specialist. References: 1. Singer, J., Healy, J and Preece, J. What to expect. The Green Peel® Herbal Treatment is a manual peeling method that is massaged into the epidermis for ten minutes, then packed on as a masque and kept moist with a special lotion for approximately 20 minutes. The massage is experienced as a strong scrubbing and within five minutes a sensation of warmth or heat will develop in the skin. When you go home, your skin will look reddened. The next day your skin will look slightly tan. The third day is routinely when you will see the peeling take place. The uppermost layer of skin sheds and reveals a perfectly intact layer of rejuvenated, vital and fresh skin with renewed color and a finer texture. The results of the Green Peel® Herbal Treatment can be compared to those derived from a series of micro-dermabrasion treatments or months of at home application of vitamin A (Tretinoine, Retinol). Diabetes, Gum Disease & Inflammation By Dr. Zeny Ocean
The Mouth is the Gateway to the Immune System! Infections in the teeth and gums have been linked to many diseases...
A Short Primer: People who have diabetes are at a higher risk of developing gum disease. In diabetics, periodontal disease is typically worse than people who don’t have diabetes. Research confirms that diabetes makes gum disease more severe. The effects include deeper pockets in the gum around the teeth, more loss of bone and more loss of periodontal ligaments that connect the teeth to the alveolar bone. This is especially true of those whose diabetes is not under control and for those who’ve had diabetes for many years. The earlier a person develops diabetes and the longer they have had it, especially if they have had problems controlling it, the more susceptible they are to periodontal disease. And, once they get it, the more destructive it is. The diabetes-periodontal disease connection forms a closed loop and may be the strongest connection in medicine. Just as diabetes makes gum disease worse, gum disease affects how well diabetics can control their blood glucose levels. If you are not diabetic, do you know if you are at risk? It is recommended, at the very least, that you have a diabetic risk screening and a periodontal (gum) evaluation to determine your risk and to develop a treatment plan. References: 1. LIVING GREEN
Health & Quality of Indoor Environments •A Six-Part Series• By Kimberly A. Phipps-Nichol
M
ost people, including those of us living in the Northern Nevada/Reno/Tahoe region, spend 50 – 70% of their time indoors and yet are not aware of the various impacts that buildings have on our wellbeing. Sure, buildings can be as simple as shelter from inclement weather or as audacious as statement piece museums designed by super-star Architects, but the definition of good design for any structure should be contingent on whether the building contributes to the health and welfare of the occupants. As a Healthy Beginnings reader, you’re pretty likely to have some interest in environmentally responsible design and construction. What you may not have realized, though, is that Green design as it’s often labeled, is also healthy design. Spaces that are good for the environment are also good for the occupants, and vice versa. This article introduces a six-part series covering the built environment’s potential effects on occupant health and wellness and how to design and plan for better occupant health. Whether you’re just looking to make the most of the space you currently have or are planning to build a new home or office, we hope you’ll use the information provided over the next six months to help you create the best possible places to live, work and play. There are numerous areas in which the principles of Green design contribute to a healthy indoor environment. What used to be termed Indoor Air Quality has recently broadened in scope to address the entire environment within a building. Indoor Environmental Quality, or IEQ, came about as the next generation of Indoor Air Quality when it was realized that it is more than

just the quality of the air itself that makes for a healthy building. For instance, a building can have a very high quality of indoor air, but without access to natural light (and better yet views) it’s not a high quality indoor environment. The building industry’s understanding of what contributes to high quality indoor air has greatly increased. Beyond the role played by mechanically operated air exchange and heating systems, we must consider the chemical composition of each material specified in a space to ensure it does not burden the air with toxins. Many of the raw goods, adhesives, paints, stains and petroleum-based fibers that comprise materials made for the building industry within the last 75 years are now known to contribute to poor indoor air quality. What is most surprising is the vast majority of these toxins are still allowed to be used on/ in materials that will likely give off-gas into an indoor environment. While there have been some industry or legislative based reductions and eliminations of these compounds, far too many remain prevalent in the materials and processes used for both residential and commercial construction. Over the next 6 months we will explore various materials and systems which affect the quality of the indoor environment, and will provide you with options for creating healthy, high performance spaces. Look for upcoming information on finish materials, mechanical systems and filtration, passive solar design and daylighting, the energy within your space, “Green” cleaning and much more. Thank you for joining us on this journey to healthier indoor environments, we look forward to helping make your space the best it can be. uts are a wonderful snack. They’re rich in important nutrients and hearty enough to sustain us between meals. But there is a downside to eating too many nuts. Let’s look at the good and not so good qualities of this popular snack food.
First, The Good News In addition to supplying important nutrients, especially essential fatty acids (EFAs), nuts are quick, easy, portable and tasty. This makes them wonderful travel foods and great for satisfying us between meals. But there is a ‘not so good side’ to nuts. In some circumstances they can create or at least aggravate specific health problems. Knowing what these are helps you make better choices at snack time.
The Rest Of The Story... Aside from the somewhat higher calories nuts have, there are two specific potential problems with eating too many. These are the Omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio and the issue of allergies. The allergy problem is simple: nuts are among the most common foods people have allergic reactions to. If you have any type of negative
reaction to nuts you’re likely to avoid them already. And that’s a good thing since some of these reactions can be life-threatening. The sneakier problem has to do with the essential fatty acids in nuts. We need EFAs in our diet, that’s why they’re called “Essential.” There are two specific types of EFAs that we need to eat in close proportion to one another. These are the Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids. Although you’ll find differing opinions of the very best dietary ratio between them, generally experts say the best balance comes when eating between 1 and 3 parts Omega-6 for every 1 part of Omega-3. Modern diets are heavily skewed towards greater proportions of Omega-6 because of their large amount of grains and processed foods. Some estimates say that people often get as much as 20to-1, 30-to-1 or even higher (Omega-6 to Omega-3) in their daily diet. The problem with such a high 6-to-3 ratio can be expressed in a single word: inflammation. Omega-6 fatty acids feed the pro-inflammatory biochemical pathways, while Omega-3 fatty acids feed the anti-inflammatory pathways.

Monthly Health Outlook:
THE SUN IN
SCORPIO By Robert Ayres
From a spiritual and esoteric standpoint, the veil thins between the material and lower astral world now. This allows an overflowing into our physical reality of the negative influence of lower astral beings. It is necessary for us to recognize that life legitimately consists of light and darkness, good and evil. There has been a tendency in modern materialistic culture to naively ignore or deny the reality of good and evil. They are the two sides of the same coin. They are intimately interconnected and help define each other. You can’t know good without knowing evil and you can’t know evil without knowing good. Together they form the extreme polarities of life expression. We are spiritual beings based in freedom. For there to be freedom there must be choice. If there was only good with no evil then it would be a weak goodness. We are destined to be masters. This means that the light and good that we embody is invincible and cannot be defeated. It is a strong goodness. It must be confronted by a powerful adversary to test and challenge the good until it is mastered. This is the process of growth and evolution that Scorpio rules. Scorpio rules that part of ourselves and the world that is still unredeemed. It represents the work that remains to be done in order to achieve perfection. It is a cosmic issue and not just a personal or human one. The psychologist Carl Jung and others increasingly addressed this challenging side of the

his month the Sun enters into Scorpio on October 22nd. As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer, the darkness increasingly dominates our inner and outer reality. The sun-filled days of spring and summer are over and the lengthening shadows of fall and winter are here. The Scorpion is the sign of the zodiac that represents the shadow side of life. Even though most people misunderstand Scorpio, it truly does rule sex, death, and the dark side of life. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain is celebrated while the sun is in Scorpio. Halloween, our modern version of this celebration, is also coming up.

human condition and how to work to transform it. It relates to the human soul and the depths of the subconscious mind. This is the part of us that contains all of the hidden forces and powers of the universe in microcosmic form. There are parts of ourselves that are deeply connected with the animal kingdom and the lower passions. Humanity shares these lower instincts with the animals. These desires must be transmuted into higher spiritual consciousness. This results in a liberation of these powers into enlightened expressions of spirituality. Scorpio rules the principles of growth, evolution, transformation and metamorphosis. It is magical. This is the process of the caterpillar turning into the butterfly. The kundalini, the evolutionary force within us, is ruled by the planet Pluto, one of the two rulers of Scorpio. This cosmic force of transformation is initially experienced as the sex drive. But over time we are to use this force for the development of higher states of consciousness. It is the motive power of self-transformation that drives us to grow and evolve. Mars, the primary planetary ruler of Scorpio, embodies the archetype of the warrior and the virtue of courage. The evolutionary process requires a warrior-like attitude and courage to do battle with the shadow side of ourselves. The purpose of this battle is redemption. Now is the time when the battle lines are drawn and the challenge is in our face. The process is not easy but the rewards are unbounded. Scorpio also rules the sexual and reproductive organs, the kundalini, and the chakras in general. It is strongly connected with our sexual life expression. This is a necessary and important part of our lives. But in later years, there wants to be a natural and gradual redirection of this powerful force to the higher spiritual chakras and consciousness centers. Scorpio thus also rules the development of the invisible physiology of our subtle, more spiritual bodies. Herbs that are ruled by Scorpio that can be of benefit now are black and blue cohosh, aloe vera, ginseng, raspberry leaf, and saw palmetto berries. These herbs are excellent for balancing, healing and toning the reproductive organs. They give a vitalizing effect to the inner sexual power and the drive for growth and self-transformation. It is time to energize your inner power of soul. THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. 2008 All Rights Reserved, Robert Ayres

HEALTH FAMILY
The Genetics of High Cholesterol By Frank Shallenberger, MD, HMD
T
hanks to the unbelievably effective marketing strategies of the pharmaceutical industry, both doctors and patients alike have been lead into thinking that lowering cholesterol levels with drugs is the answer to heart disease. However, a very important aspect of that equation is often overlooked–lipoprotein(a), Lp (a). Lp (a) is a molecule that comes from a combination of a fat and a protein. The fat in Lp (a) is LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), and the protein is called apolipoprotein (a). Because of its LDL cholesterol component, Lp (a) contributes to atherosclerosis, the process that coats the arteries with plaque and causes cardiovascular disease. This makes Lp (a) a serious risk factor for coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease (dementia), and strokes. Lp (a) has a tendency to cause life threatening clots in the heart, brain, and lungs. It does this in two ways. First, because Lp (a) stimulates the production of the proclotting agent PAI-1, it leads to excessive blood clot formation. This, combined with the fact that because its structure is similar to the body’s natural clot remover, plasminogen, it competes with plasminogen and renders it much less effective. This leads to reduced fibrinolysis - the way the body removes clots - thus causing clots and decreasing the removal of clots.
Unfortunately, your parents have everything to do with it. How high your Lp (a) levels are has nothing to do with your lifestyle, and everything to do with your genetics. The levels can vary from less than 0.2mg/dL to greater than 200 mg/dL. People of African descent typically have two to three times higher levels of Lp (a) than Asian, Oceanic, or European descent. Lp (a) levels are only slightly affected by diet, exercise, sleep, or any other lifestyle factor. So you can have the perfect lifestyle and still be at risk from the effects of Lp (a).
For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
You might wonder why you haven’t heard more about Lp (a). The answer is simple. Big pharma has not been able to find a drug that lowers Lp (a) without fatal results. As soon as they do, you can be sure that it will become the hottest topic in all the health and medical journals. Linus Pauling, one of the most influential chemists of the 20th century, showed us over two decades ago that taking a simple preparation of amino acids l-lysine and l-proline, along with vitamin C will stop Lp (a) dead in its tracks. The treatment will not usually lower Lp (a) levels, but it will bind up and neutralize it so that it cannot exert its dangerous effects. The dosage is 3,000 mg of l-lysine and 500 mg of l-proline taken once a day, and 1000 mg of vitamin C taken twice a day. Before you start taking these supplements, have your doctor check your Lp (a) level. An Lp (a) less than 14 mg/dL does not need treatment. Levels between 14 - 30 mg/dL are considered borderline, but treatment might be recommended, especially if there is any family history of heart disease, strokes, dementia, or clots. Levels greater than 30 mg/dL should be treated. Until next time, remember that our bodies were designed to heal themselves – at times, we must help them and be a part of the healing process.

ACUPRESSURE
ASK
WITH HYPNOSIS RELIEVES ANXIETY ABOUT:
DR. SOIL By Craig Witt and Mark O’Farrell, Soil Council
What is the difference between mulch and compost? Repeat this simple mantra over and over: Healthy plants need healthy soil. A healthy soil is teaming with millions of living organisms that all contribute to the health of your plants. To get through a brutal high desert winter, your soil microbes need two things, food and shelter. In simple terms, compost is food for your soil and mulch provides shelter. Compost is generally much finer than what you would use for mulch. It is organic matter which has been broken down by fungi and bacteria. It is usually very dark brown and smells slightly sweet, like healthy rich topsoil. If it smells sour, putrid or you detect a hint of ammonia, it means that it has not been composted properly. Avoid it like the plague. To be a good food source, compost is applied directly to the soil where the microbes can get to it. It can be incorporated into the top few inches of soil and covered with mulch. Mulch serves as shelter for your soil, so it always goes on the surface, after a good meal of compost. It protects your soil from extreme temperatures in both summer and winter. It also prevents erosion from wind, rain and poorly adjusted sprinkler heads.
Should I use that pretty colored rock for mulch in my landscape? That depends on what the goal of mulching is in your particular landscape. For large open areas where your goal is low maintenance, rock is certainly a reasonable alternative. It also works well for some high traffic areas or overflow parking.
For any areas where you have plants, however, you would want to use an organic mulch like walk-on bark or wood mulch. Organic mulches serve the primary purpose of suppressing weeds as well as, or better, than rock mulches. In addition, they provide two major benefits to your landscape that rock mulches do not. Organic mulches are usually less dense, so they provide a greater R-value in insulating your soil from temperature extremes. Organic mulches also improve your soil over time as they are broken down by microbes, contributing valuable organic matter to the soil. An interesting fact about redwood bark mulches or “Gorilla hair” mulches is to understand that redwood resists decomposition in the soil. That’s the reason that many fence posts and containers are made out of redwood. They last longer before decomposing. Sometimes this can be an advantage, but it is a disadvantage for increasing your soil’s fertility. Many mulches, if they are not composted, can have phytotoxic characteristics. That means they actually inhibit plant growth. Two good examples are Walnut and Eucalyptus. It’s best to know where your mulch comes from and what it is made of. For more detailed information on mulches, see www.attra.org. he Temporomandibular Joint, or TMJ, is located just in front of the ear openings on both sides of the head. This joint is the connection point of the lower jaw to the skull, and with contraction and relaxation of the muscles, the lower jaw can move in many different dimensions. The TMJ joint is very unique in that it is the ONLY joint that can rotate and slide. This is very important for the movements necessary for talking, swallowing, chewing and supporting the head on the spine.
For example, in the case where a person has incorrect posture, the upper and lower teeth may not close together correctly, causing sliding or grinding. The associated pain and irritation sends useless sensory and motor information through a tiny network of nerves located in the brain stem, called the Reticular Activation System (RAS). The RAS has profound influences on our awareness and how we think, learn, and act. Symptoms of improper proprioception can include anxiety, depression, inability to concentrate, and insomnia.

The systemic and biochemical changes brought about by an unbalanced bite can be global, causing anxiety, depression, irratic moods, and sleep disorders. Patients with a history of these and other symptoms that haven’t been relieved by traditional therapies should ask their neuromuscular dentist to perform a simple manual and/or sensor-based exam to see if an unbalanced bite is at the root of the problem. ost folks consider their fireplaces and chimneys to be indestructible parts of their home that require little or no maintenance. However, chimneys are a part of your home’s heating system, which must effectively exhaust fumes from your fireplace. Relatively minor but regular maintenance efforts can help your chimney operate safely for an indefinite period of time. In the U.S., many people are poorly informed about the importance of basic chimney maintenance. This lack of understanding causes a substantial number of preventable deaths and injuries each year. Beyond the safety issue, neglect of chimneys leads to very expensive major repairs that would not be necessary if the chimney were properly maintained.
Chimney Inspection
The Chimney Safety Institute recommends that homeowners who light fires in their fireplaces during the heating season should have their chimneys inspected and cleaned once a year. If unseasoned wood is burned in the fireplace, twicea-year cleaning and inspection may be necessary. One way to tell if your chimney needs cleaning is if soot rains down when you open or close your damper. You can also measure. If you have one-eighth of an inch of creosote buildup you should have your chimney and fireplace inspected and cleaned. References: 1. www.csia.org

GR ATITUDE:
A Path to Happiness & Well Being By Rev. Diane Hageman
I
n our busy, noisy world of unrest, we are always looking for ways to increase happiness, improve health and enhance overall well being. One of these ways may be as simple as developing an “Attitude of Gratitude”. Down through the ages, philosophers, religious leaders and spiritual teachers have long touted counting our blessings as an important spiritual practice that helps to cultivate wellness and happiness. There is scientific proof to confirm that long held belief. Grateful people are happier, more optimistic, more satisfied with their lives,” says Michael McCullough, a University of Miami psychology professor. “They are more empathetic toward others. We even have a bit of evidence that grateful people are viewed as kinder, more helpful and more supportive than less-grateful people.” Psychology professo,r Robert Emmons of Univ. of Calif at Davis, has studied the effects of the positive emotion of gratitude for over ten years. According to him it is the “forgotten factor In happiness research.” Prof. Emmons and Prof. Michael McCullough in 2003 did a research project called, “Counting blessings versus burdens: An experimental investigation
of gratitude and subjective well-being in daily life.” One study included taking a group of over 100 undergraduate students and dividing them into three groups. Each group was to make weekly entries in a journal. The first group was to write five things they were grateful for, the second group was to write five daily hassles, and the third group was to write five events that impacted their lives. After ten weeks, the students that kept the gratitude journal were happier by 25%, had a more optimistic outlook for the next week, slept better, exercised more and had less physical symptoms, such as pain and illness. According to another study of the University of Connecticut, heart attack patients that practiced daily gratitude took better care of themselves, slept better, exercised more regularly and greatly reduced the risk of another heart attack. Prof. Emmons is also the author of the book, Thanks!: How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier (Houghton Mifflin, 2007). He states that increased happiness and well being isn’t hard to achieve. A few hours of writing an attitude journal for 3 weeks can create effects that will last six months or more.

Emmons also says,” If we hang out with ungrateful people, we will ‘catch’ one set of emotions; if we choose to associate with more grateful individuals, the influence will be in another direction. Find a grateful person and spend more time with him or her.” We are approaching the one day set aside for counting blessings and that seems like the perfect time to start a practice of gratitude. Here a few suggestions and ideas to increase your level of gratefulness.
1) Keep a gratitude journal. Daily, list
all the things you are grateful for in the last twenty-four hours. If you can’t get to it daily, try setting time aside to do it once a week, listing all your blessings for the last week. In Emmons’ words, the act of writing, “...allows you to see the meaning of events going on around you and create meaning in your own life.”
2) Meditate. Sit quietly, close your eyes and take a slow, gentle breath. Bring to mind something for which you are profoundly grateful. Allow that feeling to arise in you; you may even smile as you put your attention on it. That feeling is gratitude. Focus on that feeling, breathe
November 2008
deeply, and try to hold on to it for a few minutes. Now repeat the process again with the next thing in your life that you are profoundly grateful for. Spend 20 to 30 minutes two or three times a week in a gratitude meditation.
3) Have a gratitude celebration with others. Take time to join others celebrating all the things there are to be grateful for. Stop and really listen to each other. Find fun & creative ways to be thankful with family and friends
4) Thank someone who has made a difference in your life. Write a letter expressing your feelings.
5) Begin and end each day by think-

NUTS! The Good... & Not So Good News Continued from page 35.
Why This Is Important There is growing awareness in the medical community about the role inflammation plays in chronic disease. Inflammation is part of heart disease, risk of strokes and heart attacks, diabetes, arthritis and other diseases. By having an excessively high 6-to-3 ratio, you are increasing the tendency towards such inflammatory reactions. What does this have to do with nuts? Only a few nuts approach the ideal 6-to-3 ratio, like butternut, walnut, chestnut, and macadamia nuts. Other nuts, like peanuts, have astronomically high amounts of Omega-6 compared to Omega-3, while others have no Omega-3 at all, like almond, coconut and acorn nuts. If you ate a lot of peanuts, for example, you’d have to eat a very large amount of salmon or take fairly high doses of fish oil to get a high enough amount of Omega-3 to compensate. The bottom line is this: if you have a health condition that includes inflammatory issues (joint pain, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cancer, heart disease, etc.), you’d be better off eating less nuts or avoiding them altogether. Sweet & Sour Curry Squash
Spicy Spaghetti Squash Ingredients:
By Lois Ehlers
1 small spaghetti squash, halved (seeds removed) 1 tbsp. olive oil ½ cup minced onion 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 scallions, minced 12 oz. ground turkey 2 cups crushed tomatoes 2 tbsp. red wine 2 tbsp. capers 2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 2 tbsp. minced fresh parsley Fresh Parmesan cheese
Ingredients: 1/2lb. butternut squash 1/4 cup olive oil 1 ½ inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and minced 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped 1/2 tsp. Red curry powder Dash cayenne pepper 1 tsp. salt 1 tbs. apricot preserves, melted 1 tbs. lime juice
Directions:
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place each squash half, cut side down, on a cookie sheet and bake, uncovered, for about 45-60 minutes until fork goes easily in to the shell. Let cool slightly, scoop out the strands of squash with a large fork or spoon and set aside. Discard shell.
1. Cut the squash in half–lengthwise. Peel and scrape out the seeds. Then cut into 1 inch thick strips, then crosswise into 1 inch pieces. 2. Heat oil in a large skillet over med-high heat. Add minced ginger and jalapeno pepper, stir and cook for one minute. Next add the red curry powder and dash of cayenne pepper and stir quickly. Add salt and stir. Stir in the melted apricot preserves.
2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Add onion, garlic and scallions and sauté for two minutes. Add turkey and cook until it loses its pinkness, about 5-6 minutes; add tomatoes and wine. Bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes. 3. Add capers, oregano and crushed red pepper flakes. Simmer for 5 minutes. Reheat squash by microwaving it, covered, on high for 3 minutes. Top the squash with sauce and garnish with parsley and Parmesan cheese.
3. Add the squash to the pan, stir to coat with sauce. Reduce the heat to medium, cover and cook about 25 minutes until tender. Finally, stir in the lime juice.

Chew On
THIS! By Shelby Molchan
T
he busy lifestyle that we lead these days promotes multitasking as a way to be more productive and profitable. That may be true in business, but not when it comes to eating. How many of us sit down (or don’t sit down) to eat while engaging in another task in an effort to occupy our attention? Even around the family table, with the television off, we are talking as we eat. The focus of a meal is rarely the meal! We are chewing and swallowing without consciously thinking about the aroma, flavor and texture of the food we are eating. Occasionally we may ‘notice’ some of the characteristics of our meal, but still we do not expressly focus on the meal itself. When was the last time you ate consciously, from start to finish, eating slowly, setting down the utensil between bites, and purposefully tasting, savoring and chewing your food, gratefully receiving the nutrition that it is providing for you? Can’t remember? Maybe never? For a lot of us a meal is something we squeeze in on the fly. Then we wonder why we have heartburn, gas, bloat, upset stomach and feel generally lousy after eating. Part of the reason may be that you are not chewing your food completely, meaning to a liquid! Can you even imagine chewing your food until every bit of it can be swished through your teeth like kids do with Jello? When undigested food enters the digestive tract, your body is unable to assimilate the nutrients of that food, therefore, most of it will simply wind up sticking to the colon, thus leaching toxins back into your blood stream as it decays. Chewing your food well is a very good method of reducing stress on the digestive tract. So here’s a little challenge: The next time you are unconsciously eating, bring your attention to the food in your mouth. Before you swallow, take a second; Feel the food. Is it chunky? Have you got a humungous November 2008
bite in your mouth? If so, you are encouraged to chew again, and again. Keep noticing how much chewing it takes to get that one bite completely chewed. By bringing consciousness to your eating, you will tend to take smaller bites, chew your food longer, enjoy the flavors and textures of your food more, feel full by eating less, reduce stress on the digestive tract and possibly lose weight and feel better.
Chew on that! References: 1. www.Mercola.com 2. Bernard Jensen, M.D.

here is no evidence as to why Nevada has the second highest suicide and depression rates, the highest divorce rate, and is a state with the highest drug use in the U.S. The one thing we do know is we are all living here and are surrounded by these issues whether we are directly affected or not. Statistics can be scary, sometimes unbelievable, but true. By 2020, depres-

sion is estimated to be the second largest health problem in the United States. Today, pre-schoolers are the fastest-growing market segment for prescribed antidepressants. Who ever thought that over a million children under the age of 10 would be clinically depressed? Depression is also linked to suicide. You might be surprised to learn that Nevada seniors, over the age of 60, have the highest suicide rates in the nation. The worst part is, someone in your own home or who is close to you could be suffering without your knowledge, or even worse, you could be reading this right now and be suffering from depression yourself. People often feel ashamed to be suffering from depression or view it as a sign of weakness. This is not the case; depression can be the result of a small trauma, too much stress, or even learned beliefs or behaviors. Depression has also been linked to wheat and related grain allergies, dairy and other food sensitivities, chemical sensitivities, environmental toxins, genetic predisposition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and the list goes on. The good news is depression is one of the most treatable illnesses. Over 80% of people who seek treatment get relief. Treatment for depression must include healing the relationship environment as

well as the whole person. However, nothing is possible without personally accepting the illness and then actively seeking treatment. A good treatment counselor does not focus on using anti-depressants as the cure-all, yet instead uses a variety of healing modalities. Depression is nothing to be ashamed of; there are numerous treatment options and support groups available, though, acknowledging the problem must be the first step on the path to healing. The best thing about acknowledging a potential problem is the hope for improving the quality of your life. Like anything we do in life, the choice has to be ours. We only have one life, choosing to live happily can only afford us a fulfilled journey. The Body Beautiful By L. Martina Young, Ph.D.
T
wentieth and twenty-first century ideals of western beauty have long proffered a diminished sense of what is, at its mythic proportions, a multifaceted portrait of one of the most quixotic thoughts in human imagination: beauty. This article is a meditation not on “what” beauty is, but rather on “who” beauty is, as seen through the mythic imagination of human culture. Initiating a kind of resuscitation of the soul of beauty, a remembrance of the body of beauty in
mythic times begs recall. In a culture predicated on beauty products and practices, perhaps we might consider more closely not only the importance of beauty in our lives, but also remember how we ourselves are the myriad emanations of beauty. Informed by the poetic methods used by comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell who recognized that a metaphoric reading of the myths unleashes the deeper resonances of our human experiences, we will trace humankind’s stories for their hidden and lost meanings. Thus, we turn to the archaic myths (muthos, “stories”) about beauty to find out who beauty is, and how beauty existed in the world according to myth. Questions of “who” and “how” already imply that beauty is not a noun, a mere thing, but rather an “act,” a verb, a doing, and a way of being. “Who is beauty?” Within the Greek imagination, beauty is Aphrodite. She is recognized as the goddess of Love and Beauty. The ancient Greeks personified beauty with “love” -- as one whole being. As we will see from the myths, the act of “becoming a being” is already “to be” an act of beauty and love. In his Theogony, Hesiod, 8th century BCE Greek poet writes: “Just as [Kronos] threw the genitals into the surging sea, about them a white foam grew [and] in it a girl formed. Gods and men call her Aphrodite.” In the Homeric Hymns, Aphrodite is known as “the Cyprian one,” who,

as she stepped from the wind-swept seas of Cypress, “the grass began to grow all round beneath her slender feet.” It is clear from these passages that beauty is generative; beauty inspires life to bloom all round. Is it not also so with love? Don’t we often feel the sense of being energized and beautiful when embraced by love, with everything around us amplified and giving with the living elixir of life’s beauty? The myths of Aphrodite, of which there are many— each one instructive and pointing to countless aspects of beauty itself—tell of her birth, relations, her loves, and struggles. In general, myths convey the numinosity perceived in the phenomenal world. In a closer reading, they offer an engaging fulfillment of what is essentially “alatheiac” by nature, that is, images that both conceal and reveal ideas of eternal truths that are restorative and healing, and are as pertinent and applicable to modern lives today as they were in an age now left in the hands of memory. Sourcing the “idea” of western beauty to its mythic origins—stories that fuel poetry and form the foundations of philosophy (e. g. Plato’s Timaeus or Paul Valéry’s Dialogues)—assists us in recovering and re-discovering the wide and wondrous breadth of beauty’s claim, her clamorous kiss. The mythic stories remind us that what is always and already given in the very nature of our being—flesh and bone, breath and spirit, loving and dying—are all characteristics of beauty. Beauty is life personified. Today unfortunately, beauty is a corporate monster and is made suspect. Beauty has been relegated to a multibillion-dollar industry selling clothes and cosmetics. But let us pause here. What of this relationship of beauty to clothes and make-up? When

we pursue the matter further, we find that the word “cosmetics” has its origins in the Greek word kosmos, a term meaning “the order of harmony.” Harmony too is a mythic figure. In Greek myth, she is the daughter of Aphrodite and Ares, the god of War. We can interpret these findings in a number of ways, but for the moment, let us remain with the connection of clothing and beauty’s “world” of cosmetics by returning to the goddess’s own creation myth. As Aphrodite steps onto the “wide-bosomed earth,” she is greeted by the three Graces who, “[wrap] her in the fresh immortal robes [they] themselves had made with their labors.” The Graces (Charites) are most often depicted as attendants to the goddess of Beauty and Love. We might surmise then that the robes and garments that drape Beauty’s body are her “graces.” Moreover, we can also tease out how the sense of “harmony” and the feeling of being “put together” are related when we ourselves have attended to the care of our bodies by donning certain clothing and grooming ourselves with cosmetic caresses. We are more apt to “join the world,” the “cosmos” as it were, with the harmony of our own charms and grace. Conversely, when we are barraged by commercial advertisements shooting across the universe of screen and television selling beauty in a bottle, in a tube of toothpaste, in a bar of soap—or worse—in an easily digestible capsule or by the edge of a knife, we become less focused on a life of harmony and balance, and our relationship to the mystical ways of the cosmos – a distant and grandiloquent relative – dims. In this light, Beauty is given short shrift, and in the process, has lost her mind. Taking these messages seriously, we too are in danger of losing our own souls. Messages such as these betray a culture that not only forces beauty into a genie’s jar, but one bent on scalping the long and ancient mane of beauty’s sometimes shocking and always uncontainable assets. They suggest, moreover, that beauty is something apart from us—in other words, something that is “not-I,” obscuring the more apt and mythical (mystical) understanding that beauty is all appearance—in other words, all that “I Am” already. To restore a fuller sense of beauty, and tend to our own souls, let us take a look at the name Aphrodite, for in the name lives the sweet hint of her greening knowledge. Thought by scholars to be an incarnation of an earlier Sumerian “fertility goddess,” the name Aphrodite is rooted to the Greek term aphros, meaning “foam,” and it refers to her oceanic and nascent beginnings, thus Homer’s epithet “the Cyprian one.” Several ideas converge and are constellated in Hesiod’s telling as discussed above. Both the strewn genitals of Ouranos (“Heaven”) and the watery sea are, again, “generative” images; they are productive and life-giving tropes. Poetically, they perform the alchemical literary rouse that forms the body of Beauty and Love. Likewise, the image of “foam” conjures the particular qualities of Aphrodite’s form and countenance—bubbly, frothy, and effervescent. The Homeric Hymns recall, “Aphrodite, lover of laughter.”

From Antiseptic to Aphrodisiac The Diversity of Essential Oils
By Lana Nickerson
F
or more than 6,000 years, mankind has been acquainted with the wonderful effects of natural essential oils, their healing and purifying properties and unique fragrances. For centuries, essential oils have served as symbols of wealth and were highly valued as gifts. In Egypt, they were used to disinfect the air, provide skin care, and for aromatic baths. In India they believed that scents opened the soul and tuned the mind. Hippocrates recommended daily aromatic baths to his patients and essential oils for healing massage. It is said that he used aromatic fumigation to rid Athens of the plague. The modern history of aromatherapy began in the early 20th century, when the French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefossé, accidentally burned his hand in his laboratory and dipped it into the nearest jar of liquid, a jar of lavender oil. To his surprise, the burnt hand healed much quicker than usual, with no scars. This attracted Gattefossé’s attention and he began to study the properties of lavender oil in more detail. The results of his research were published in his book, Aromatherapy, still in print. Scents are an inseparable part of our lives because they have a direct connection with us. Once the nose has gathered information about an aroma, it sends a report directly to your

brain. This process bypasses the central nervous system and the areas of the brain that control reasoning. Instead, the nose sends its fragrance facts to a very old part of your brain called the Limbic system. The Limbic system also directly communicates with glands called the hypothalamus and pituitary. Both of these are considered ”master glands” because they regulate so many body functions. Through these glands, your sense of smell reaches all your various hormones and your immune system. The main areas to where this information is relayed are those body functions that work automatically, not controlled by your will or reason: appetite, digestion, sexual arousal, memory, body temperature and heartbeat. Each essential oil possesses diverse properties due to its complex composition, but it also has much in common in many other ways with all essential oils: • Kill bacterial, viral & fungal infections, reduce inflammation • Beneficial influence on the nervous system, emotions & mental health • Tone and moisturize the skin and hair • Renew the body’s mechanism to self-regulate

It should always be diluted with a carrier oil for topical application. Two common oils typically used as carrier oils are avocado and jojoba. Always check first to see if you are allergic to an essential oil before using. Apply a small amount of the diluted essential oil to the inside of your wrist or elbow and watch for a reaction such as redness, itching, warmth or sensitivity to the skin over the next 12 to 24 hours. Phototoxic reactions such as rash or blistering may occur when using citrus peel oils such as lemon and orange during prolonged exposure to sunlight. Ingestion of an essential oil is only recommended after consulting a doctor. Use during pregnancy or in the case of epilepsy should only be carried out under professional medical guidance. Essential oils must be kept tightly closed, in a dark place and out of the reach of children.

FENG SHUI
and The Business Environment By Jennifer Chang
F
eng Shui is using the art of placement and intention to harmonize living environments, but it is also often used in working environments. Many offices have used feng shui to make their businesses more profitable. Banks, restaurants, and corporations in Asia and the U.S. consult feng shui experts before building as well as after they begin business. The Chinese believe that the fortunes of an entire company rests on the good sitting of its manager or president. That being said, a feng shui consultant starts with the manager’s office. The manager’s desk should sit in the most commanding position to enforce and assert authority over his/her employees. Authority generally stems from the corner office farthest from the entrance. Ch’i is affected by computers; computers can be good, stimulating to the office, raising both wisdom and knowledge. However, the computer worker should face the door, never having their back to the door. If nothing can be done about
this, they need a mirror facing the door, so that they can see who is entering. In a store or restaurant the cash register should be positioned to give the cashier a good view of the door. When the entry way to an office faces traffic, a mirror should be placed facing the traffic. The mirror repels the negative flow of Ch’i coming towards the building. The flow of Ch’i is best thought of as meandering down a pathway that easy to walk through; there should be a clear open passageway and no clutter. This should also be kept in mind when arranging furniture. Sharp edges cut through Ch’i. Whether on desks or walls, sharp edges should be covered with plants or material to soften the flow. All five elements need to be used inside an office space, to harmonize existing Ch’i and bring forward new Ch’i. The five elements are wood, fire, earth, water and metal. When all of these elements are applied, harmony will be felt not only by the employees, but by the customers too. This will make the office softer and more

pleasant to be in. Colors can set the tone in a working environment as well. The use of the correct colors can improve the productivity in a business, the relationships between workers, and attract and inspire clients to frequent an establishment which in turn helps to increase revenues. Certain colors are particularly effective and appropriate for specific businesses. Feng Shui may sound mystical but think of one of your own experiences. How do you feel when you walk into a day spa? Starbucks? Have you ever walked into a building or office and you immediately feel relaxed, peaceful and welcomed? That is Feng Shui. Reference: 1. Toxic Moisturizers... By Rita Shurtliff
T
he skin is the largest organ of your body. It is living and breathing and absorbs everything you apply to it. In less than one minute your skin will absorb whatever is applied to it and deliver it directly into your bloodstream. That’s why using a non-toxic product on your skin is very important. Most moisturizer creams are made up of oil and water that is held together with chemical emulsifiers and compacted with preservatives so they are able to have a long shelf life. Just because the label says ‘natural’ does not mean that it is true. Checking labels can give clues as to the toxicity of the ingredients—if you can’t pronounce the ingredient, “don’t buy it!” Terms like “natural” or “hypoallergenic” or “and other ingredients” could mean anything. There are no industry standards for definitions of these terms and no premarket safety testing is required. The availability of non-chemical skin moisturizers are improving constantly as more and more companies are responding to consumer demands for non-toxic products. More retailers than ever before are carrying natural products, often complete lines of products.

Is Your Energy Drink A Health Hazard? What is an Energy Drink? Energy drinks are super-caffeinated drinks popular with teenagers and collegeaged students, with names like Red Bull, Monster, and Full Throttle. Most contain isolated caffeine between 50 and 500 milligrams per serving. Isolated caffeine is ‘drug form’ caffeine—caffeine that has been chemically separated from its natural source and lacks the healthy balance of powerful antioxidants found in natural sources. Are energy drinks a health hazard? Isolated caffeine in energy drinks is linked to central body weight gain, increased blood pressure, and increased stickiness of blood cells. Most energy drinks also contain highglycemic sugar increasing free radical stress on your cells. To protect your family’s health look for simple lists of natural ingredients

and no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or sweeteners. Are healthy energy drinks available? Yes. Energy drinks that use natural sources of tea-based caffeine for energy and low-glycemic sugar sources like honey are the safest. Tea is the safest source of caffeine because it is balanced by an abundance of naturally occurring antioxidants and theanine, a calming substance. Additional ingredients like L-Carnitine, CoQ-10, ginseng and rhodiola are safe energy boosters to look for. The Body Beautiful
ACNE TREATMENT
Continued from page 49. Lastly, foam changes moment-by moment; it is amorphous – a paradox indeed. It both appears and disappears. And thus, so does beauty. This is part of beauty’s nature. Classics scholar Carl Kerényi reminds us that another name for Aphrodite is “Aphrodite Morpho, ‘the shapely’ or ‘she of various shapes.’ ” In this way, we can re-imagine beauty. But just as importantly, we might begin to come to terms with how beauty shows up in many guises, without diminishing or exiling, and embrace all of the ways we are already portraits of beauty—at every age, at every given moment. Let us remember that, since the time of the ancient Greeks, beauty represents “all form.” And our “bodies” as forms of beauty—like the frothy foam from which Beauty is born—is always shape shifting. (Part 2 of “Mything Links” will explore the myth of Aphrodite and Psyche, and discuss the relationship between “soul” and “beauty.”) The Greek personification of “memory” is Mnemosyne, goddess of Memory and Language. She is the mother of the nine Muses. References: 1. Hesiod. Theogony. Trans. M. L. West. New York: Oxford U P, 1988. 2. Plato. Essential Dialogues of Plato. “Symposium.” Trans. Benjamin Jowett. PETS HEALTHY
People Food Is Not Pet Food Take Care of Your Four-Legged Friends this Thanksgiving
A
s pet owners, we love to include our pets in holiday celebrations. However, many holiday foods and activities that we enjoy can put our four-legged friends at risk. Ingesting holiday foods is one of the biggest reason for emergency vet visits during the holiday season. Typical holiday foods are rich, fatty foods that can cause discomfort for your pet, even predispose pets to life-threatening pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or bloating. The signs of pancreatitis include vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Poultry bones can splinter and get stuck in a pet’s mouth, obstruct his throat, or perforate his intestines. Inform your guests about all pet rules: no feeding bones or other table scraps because it can make them sick. Have a supply of your pets favorite treats on hand for guests to give your pets; not too many though. Listed below are some other surprising and not so surprising tasty treats that your pets shouldn’t eat. • Chocolate and Caffeine (coffee, tea and soda) can be toxic or even fatal to dogs and cats. The effects can be serious. Toxicity can occur within 24 hours and may appear as quickly as 1 to 4 hours. Potential Toxic Dose for a medium sized 44lb dog: 3 oz. Unsweetened cocoa 5 oz Baking Chocolate 7 oz Semisweet Chocolate 20 oz Milk Chocolate • Imagine how little a cat needs to eat before it’s a toxic dose. • Giving your pet alcohol truly isn’t funny. Even small amounts of alcohol (even beer) can be toxic. • Avocados can damage the heart, lungs, and other essential tissues. • Your pets body heat causes bread dough to rise in the stomach causing pain and possibly rupture of the stomach and intestines. Dough also releases alcohol compounds, which is detrimental. • Grapes and raisins can lead to kidney failure in your pets
For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
though vets haven’t been able to determine exactly what it is that makes them so dangerous. The type or brand of grapes or raisins doesn’t matter, nor does the amount your pet might eat. • Macadamia nuts can cause fever, irregular heartbeat, seizures, or mild paralysis • Milk isn’t well tolerated by most cats. Dairy products are often overly fatty, so it’s best to avoid giving dairy to dogs as most are lactose intolerant. • Onions and garlic contain thiosulphate, which breaks down red blood cells and deprives cells of oxygen causing anemia in cats and dogs. Onion actually presents the highest risk of toxicity — a single generous serving can cause anemia. Garlic is less toxic and given in small amounts (such as in canine nutritional supplements) have benefits that outweigh their possible risks. • Plants like the hibiscus and those in the lily family may be harmful to pets, causing digestive system problems and even renal (kidney) failure. For a list of poisonous plants visit the
60
November 2008
ASPCA at http://www.aspca.org/ and do a search for animal poison control or toxic plants. • Potpourri may be an attraction for pets to drink. Make sure that potpourri pots are inaccessible to pets. • Never leave lighted candles unattended and be sure they cannot be knocked over by a paw or tail. Use candles with domes that enclose the flame. • Use a screen around the fireplace before you leave a room your pet may visit on its own. In addition to the foods that can harm your pet, increased activity and visitors during the Thanksgiving holiday can upset your pet’s routine. Try to keep your pets on their regular schedule for feeding and exercise and be sure they get plenty of love. Providing your pets with some “personal space” or a place to get away from the commotion can be beneficial. An open door may be too tempting for some pets to resist. Be sure your pets have collars with identification tags - and wear them at all times - in case of an escape. If your pet DOES slip out, resist the urge to chase them. Instead, encourage him to come back to you by enticing them with a favorite treat. Always consult with your veterinarian immediately if your pet has ingested something poisonous, is vomiting, has diarrhea, a fever, is quiet and lethargic with signs of abdominal pain, is restless, hyperactive or irritable with a rapid heart beat or tremors. Take a moment to count your blessings this Thanksgiving holiday and appreciate the unconditional love and yearlong friendship your pet gives you!
