t is that time of year again, when we decorate our homes with pumpkins, gourds and scarecrows. Fall colors are truly in effect. The air smells of dried leaves and grasses; it whips past us with the new chill it possesses. Even the lakes, streams and rivers look colder. Some of us will take our children trick-or-treating on the night of Halloween, or pass out candy to those who knock at our door, eagerly awaiting a treat. I plan on taking my costume-adorned children out for the festive tradition; however, I am going to limit the amount of homes we visit and the candy we partake. Take a look at “Lift their spirits with a healthier treat,” for more ideas on a healthier Halloween. For a real scare, check out this month’s Ingredient Watch and find out if the apple juice you’re serving is loaded with spooky things. Instead of bobbing for apples, try juicing and jazzing them up with Marie-Claire’s “Groovy Ginger Granny” recipe. This month, Healthy Beginnings is loaded with articles offering help and advice on many frightening issues, including children with asthma, chronic pain, back pain, clutter and more. We hope you enjoy this issue and that it dispels some of your daunting fears.
“A
n apple a day keeps the doctor away.” How true. Apples are delicious, and nutritious. They are rich in antioxidants and fiber and are known to ward off dementia, weight gain, colon cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer. They help decrease your bad cholesterol as well. Apples are also reminiscent of fall…and even the “fallen.” In Christianity, it represents sin, temptation and immortality, as it was the “forbidden fruit.” In Greek mythology, the apple signified your love for another. And in paganism, apples symbolized fertility and eternal youth. But, don’t let those ideas stop you from eating this delightful fruit. Try adding some sliced apples to your salad. Throw an apple in your child’s backpack for their school break snack; or, juice up a few apples for a quick shot of fiber. No matter how you slice or dice them, apples are sure to benefit your diet!

If You Can Speak A Language, You Can Play Music

o you consider yourself to be musical? For many, that question requires some thought. Many students want to learn how to play music, but believe they do not have a musical bone in their body…to give them an experience of being musical, they are asked to repeat the sentence “I haven’t got a musical bone in my body” several times. After a few repetitions of this sentence, one can easily hear a natural rhythm each time the sentence is spoken. That is musicality. What is being heard actually demonstrates that a single sentence cannot be spoken without the existence of complex rhythm. What this reveals is that we are all profoundly musical, even people who think they are not.
If we take the relationship between language and music one step further, we discover what is known as “improvisation.” In truth, improvisation is really what we do when we speak with one another; it is a musical language musicians use to converse with each other. They learn this language just as anyone learns to speak any language; not from books, but by ear and doing it. How did you learn to speak your native tongue? Did someone teach you to speak? No, of course not. You learned by listening to your parents speak. At about age one or two, you began

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, nonintrusive treatment. References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

If You Can Speak A Language, You Can Play Music Continued from Page 5 to babble; babble became words; words became sentences; and by the time you were about age four or five, you had a command over complex rhythms and were speaking fully. As you learned a new word, it went into your “word bank reservoir” and you learned to stitch those words together into more meaningful patterns—patterns that got you the results you were seeking.
extemporaneously, just as we talk extemporaneously. Do we think about speaking? Is our speaking prompted by the situation at hand, based on our need to respond to that situation by expressing our own ideas and thoughts, letting loose our own feelings and emotions, thereby creating a dialogue with those who elicited that response? Playing music and improvising, like speaking, is just that, but even more. Knowing we have these “transferable skills,” demonstrates that if we can speak a language, we can play music.
How many of you have studied a foreign language in school for three or four years but were still unable to speak that language? Yet, if for a period of time you had been placed among those to whom that language was native and had to speak that language, your ears would become attuned to it. Your brain would work out the rhythms and patterns on its own because it is a “pattern seeking” organ and its job it is to do just that. It happens automatically. You would develop a vocabulary and learn how to put words and phrases together in order to speak it with some fluency. The longer you remained immersed in that situation, the more fluent and sophisticated your language skills would become.

Another fun way to relate playing music, speaking and improvisation would be to take an example like typing on a computer keyboard. If you can say, OUT LOUD, all the letters as you type them, you will be able to play music (on a piano) the same way. It’s a great way to feel what it’s like to improvise! When individuals immerse themselves in language or music, their hearing develops and they start copying other’s styles, articulations and phrasings. Meanwhile, a vocabulary of the language is being developed. The more they apply themselves, the broader their skill fluency and vocabulary become. When they tire of imitating others, they begin to use their acquired skills to put forth their own ideas and to express their own feelings. When several musicians come together to play there is also a dialogue with each other. One musician may call out a “question” and another will “respond” with an answer—a musical theory called “Questions & Answers.” Apply this to our clearer picture of people talking together, that which makes for a meaningful conversation in which they exchange thoughts and ideas based upon their knowledge of a specific subject. In conversation, the more one speaks with others, the more they ingest and absorb the knowledge and ideas of others. As they try to educate themselves and refine their own skills of communication they, in turn, become better speakers with greater abilities to both listen and respond…to converse. This is the same process musicians use to become fine improvisers, except they use their instruments. It is difficult to put into words what causes one to play in a specific way, at a specific time, because one is prompted to play

New Study Confirms: Flu Vaccine Really Does Increase Your Risk of Serious Pandemic Flu Illness In March last year, ABC News reported: “There is renewed controversy surrounding influenza vaccines, with some studies showing people immunised against the seasonal flu might have been at greater risk during the swine flu outbreak... ‘What was a bit surprising when we looked at some of the data from Canada and Hong Kong in the last year is that people who have been vaccinated in 2008 with the seasonal or ordinary vaccine seemed to have twice the risk of getting swine flu compared to the people who hadn’t received that vaccine,’ [Professor Collignon from the Australian National University] said. ANU microbiologists say it is the opposite of what vaccines should do. Professor Collignon says the findings of the study also highlight the benefits for healthy people who are exposed to some illnesses. ‘Some interesting data has become available which suggests that if you get immunized with the seasonal vaccine, you get less broad protection than if you get a natural infection,’ he said. ‘It is particularly relevant for children because it is a condition they call original antigenic sin, which basically means if you get infected with a natural virus, that gives you not only protection against that virus but similar viruses or even in fact quite different flu viruses in the next year.’ ‘We may be perversely setting ourselves up that if something really new and nasty comes along, that people who have been vaccinated may in fact be more susceptible compared to getting this natural infection.’”

Treating the Patient, Not the Diagnosis
S
Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B. and do not address the complex combinations of physiological mechanisms that create the constellation of chronic pain syndromes; nor will they ever. It is physiologically impossible to address chronic pain with the acute pain clinical/research model. Here’s why:
ome people do not understand the true makeup of chronic pain. For example, attorneys who represent chronic pain patients in disability cases, or a venture capitalist who invests in and owns startup companies that manufacture drugs for chronic pain. With no disrespect intended, neither one of them might really understand the true nature of the mechanisms that create chronic pain patterns and the devastation that these conditions cause on their client’s/customer’s lives.
As stated above, chronic diseases and pain syndromes are all a result of multiple various cycles. They are a complex combination of neurological, metabolic (think endocrine / hormonal system), nutritional and musculoskeletal system break downs that render your body incapable of healing itself—something which is clearly designed to do. It is beyond the scope of this article to discuss healing, but essentially it’s all about making ATP (energy). If you can’t make ATP in the body, nothing that you try to help heal yourself will work. Nothing— chiropractic, acupuncture, drugs, herbs, etc. All chronic patients have lost the ability to maintain cellular homeostasis (balance). When the cell is in balance, they heal themselves. When the cell is not, so damaged that it can’t regain its ability to create energy, it can’t heal itself. It’s too far gone and it can’t recover; you can’t heal. In general, a person whose cells have lost the ability to make ATP thus has lost the ability to heal themselves.
According to a Time Magazine article, “recognizing a disease is only a prelude to treating it, and doctors admit that while they’re pretty good at relieving acute pain that occurs immediately after surgery or injury, they are usually stymied by the chronic kind. The most common complaint doctors hear from their patients is about pain that will not quite and more than 80 percent of those people never receive treatment—or at least an effective one. About a decade ago, physicians took the first step towards acknowledging the prevalence of chronic pain and their inadequate ability to address it.” “As a clinician, I’m frustrated and I’m sure many patients are, because we do a very poor job in terms of providing relief from chronic pain” says David Borsook of the McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Different organ systems have different types of cells. So as each system subsequently becomes involved, more cells become affected. That system then starts to express its own unique set of symptoms. So a “Fibromyalgia” patient may have a “Hypo” or autoimmune thyroid, a sick gut (think IBS, Diverticulitis, Celiac), a fatigued adrenal (stress) gland, and a bad left brain (brain fog, loss of short term memory, etc.). These are multiple systems— breaking down—causing a mind-numbing constellation of symptoms that do not lend themselves to a “clean” medical diagnosis, or to a response from a pill that “might,” with a large emphasize on “might,” help one of those symptoms.
The largest drug screening lab says there are 50 million Americans suffering from chronic pain. The American Academy of Family Physicians says it is actually 70 million people, and the Institute of Medicine puts the number at 116 million. No matter who is right, it’s a lot of people. There are only 300 million people in the entire US. It is also clear these entities do not know what causes chronic pain syndromes! The reason for this is chronic pain is chronic, not acute. That may seem absurdly overstated—like “duh”—but as referenced in the TIME article it cuts to the core of the problem. The medical model is an acute pain model. It teaches, practices, researches, eats, sleeps and drinks acute pain procedures and drugs, surgeries and electrical implants. These are bandages at best

“Women need to take better care of their teeth and gums than men, according to a comprehensive review of women’s health studies,” says Periodontist Dr. Charlene Krejci. Hormones affect all facets of a woman’s health, particularly their dental health. Hormonal changes occur throughout a

woman’s life during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. The findings reveal that the fluctuating female hormone levels can change conditions inside the mouth, allowing bacterial growth, bacteria to enter into blood vessels, and aggravate health issues, such as fetal death, pre-term births and bone loss. Dr. Krejci said, “There’s definitely a gender-specific connection between women’s hormones, gum disease, and specific health issues impacting women. Although women tend to take better care of their oral health than men, the main message is women need to be even more vigilant about maintaining healthy teeth and gums to prevent or lessen the severity of some of womenspecific health issues.” Dr. Krejci and her team reviewed 61 articles containing almost 100 studies in order to establish whether hormones are linked to gum disease and in particular women’s health issues, such as loss of bone, pre-term labor, and side effects of hormonal replacement therapy (HRT). The results of the review reveal that women need to stay on top of their dental check-ups consistently so gum disease doesn’t arise. To prevent female hormone-linked gum disease, we recommend a six-month check up at the dentist for people who have healthy mouths, and more frequent visits if there is evidence of gum problems (gum pockets deeper than 3 mm, bleeding on probing or pus between the teeth and gums) or for pregnant women and those suffering from bone loss. Hormones can cause gum problems during pregnancy in some women. It is advised that women who are susceptible to gum problems prior to getting pregnant should ensure that their oral problems are treated. Although women used to be discouraged from seeing the dentist during pregnancy, now it is recommended for pregnant women to scale and plane the roots of teeth to eliminate some gum disease. Gum disease is caused by a build-up of bacterial plaque on teeth and under the gums. If it remains untreated, gum disease can lead to irritation, inflammation and abscesses, which prompts the release of damaging and toxic byproducts that erode the bone that anchors teeth, causing broken and bleeding gums, and eventually tooth loss. Don’t Let Your

shoulder run up to the head, while the nerves in the neck run all the way down the arms. This means that a strain applied at one point can have effects throughout the body. Humans are born with a spine made up of 33 vertebrae and associated disc, which supports the majority of weight and stress that is put on it. When stresses placed on the spine exceed its ability to absorb them, spinal imbalance—and injury—can result. A heavy backpack, for example, can pull a child backward, causing the child to compensate by either bending forward or arching their back, compressing the spine. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder can also cause a child to lean too far to the other side to offset the weight. Over time, this overcompensation can lead to poor posture, muscle strain and pain in the back, neck and shoulders. Backpacks with tight, narrow straps that dig into the skin
hink the computer you’re carrying around, the big purse with everything but the kitchen sink in it, or the books and school supplies that your child is carrying in a backpack slung haphazardly across one shoulder are harmless? Think again! Strain to the body from carrying bags that are too heavy may lead to health complications including muscle spasms, pain in the back, neck or joints, sprains or strains, and even headaches. Health professionals recommend carrying lighter loads and using backpacks instead of single-strap bags, such as messenger bags or large purses. The muscles in the neck and

can interfere with circulation and nerve function, causing tingling, numbness and weakness in the arms and hands. Heavy loads carried by more than 79 million students across the United States can cause low back pain that often lasts through adulthood. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2010 nearly 28,000 strains, sprains, dislocations and fractures from backpacks were treated in hospital emergency rooms, physicians’ offices and clinics. “A child wearing a backpack incorrectly, or that is too heavy, can be contributing risk factors for discomfort, fatigue, muscle soreness and musculoskeletal pain, especially in the lower back,” says Karen Jacobs, EdD, OTR/L, CPE, clinical professor of occupational therapy at Boston University, and an expert on school ergonomics and healthy growth and development of school-age children. While weight can be a concern, Dr. Douglas Armstrong, an orthopedic specialist at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, explains that even though backpacks can be heavy, that is not the most important concern. “Children are at a higher risk for spine problems based on how they carry a backpack, pick it up, and put it on, not from how much weight is inside,” said Armstrong. Children can avoid back pain by 1) evenly distributing the load, 2) keeping the backpack close to the body and bending at the knees while picking it up and 3) use both straps while wearing the backpack and maintaining it centered on the body. “Two straps are always better than one because they keep the backpack near the child’s center of gravity,” Armstrong said. “However, it is OK to carry light items in a satchel or bag with one strap over the shoulder. So, think smart and take better care of your spine by making your bag lighter and carrying it correctly. By doing this, you will decrease you—and your loved ones—problems in the future. in Your Mouth? The Gateway to your Body’s Health

nfections in your mouth can make your entire body sick, and prevent sick bodies from becoming healthy. The blood and lymph supply to the mouth is connected to the rest of the body, spreading the bacteria throughout. When the gums bleed, the bacteria in the mouth enters the blood stream, spreading the infection. Science has shown that there is a correlation between periodontal disease and diabetes, aspiration pneumonia, preterm and low weight newborns, atherosclerosis, osteopenia and Alzheimer’s. Periodontal disease develops from increases in bacteria, which are part of sticky plaque left on the teeth if not brushed and flossed off after eating. Contributing factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, poor home care, poor overall health, auto immune diseases, stress, medications and genetic predisposition, increase the potential for people to develop periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is also a contagious disease. If patients see cavities or broken teeth, they make restorations a priority. However, similar to high blood pressure, periodontal disease is mostly a silent and invisible disease, not easily discerned; most symptoms do not become apparent until permanent damage has already occurred. Early signs include gums bleeding when brushed or flossed, red and tender gums, visible hard deposits on the teeth and bad breath. In advanced stages of periodontal disease, the teeth will become loose due to bone and tissue loss. Every time the person with advanced gum disease tries to chew, the teeth move, making it very painful to eat.

To prevent gum disease, good home care is a must. This includes daily brushing and flossing, exercise and a healthy diet. Also, taking the appropriate vitamins and supplements that boost the immune system helps keep periodontal disease at bay. Dental professionals are able to diagnose what stage their patients’ gum disease is at, and educate their patients on the best avenue to take to stay or become healthy. The dental hygienists will take measurements of the gums—these are called pocket depths—and assess bleeding, inflammation and recession. A measurement of pockets of three or below is deemed healthy and four or over is indicative of a problem. The dentist will use all the gathered information, along with evaluating the medical history and genetic considerations, to come up with a plan for treatment of the periodontium. The hygienist will then render appropriate dental cleanings and other treatment options depending on her or his training. Modalities include scaling (scraping the plaque off), laser therapies, systemic antibiotics, topical antimicrobials, custom fit trays that can be used at home and more involved options. The dentist may order blood tests, take bacterial swabs, and do Ph or DNA testing to help determine the propensity of progression of gum disease; thus diagnosing a much more specific treatment plan tailored to the individual. At this point, some dentist’s may refer the patient with more complex cases to a specialist in Periodontology. This is a specialist in dentistry specific to gum disease.

References: Once teeth are lost, there are several different options to replace them; implants with crowns, traditional bridges or removable partial or full dentures. These are the most common procedures. All of these involve different costs relative to the materials and complexity of fabrication. Routine and consistent dental care will help prevent dental disease or help identify disease at the early stages to avoid long term health problems and costly care. Even a simple consultation can begin a process of home care that is significant in reducing your systemic risk to oral bacteriology.

Natural Asthma
Remedies for Kids
Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
B12 Deficiency and Childhood Asthma
Licorice Extract, Plantain Extract, Horse Chestnut Extract and Pine Extract with wildflower honey. The pastilles, cough drops, are also very strong.
Dr. Jonathan Wright, MD, the fearless leader in integrative medicine has long espoused using B12 injections for treating childhood asthma. He cites many articles from 1931 onward that demonstrate hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) in infants and adults, which can be normalized with parenteral (shots under the skin) B12 injections. One study from 1935 found that 88 percent of children with asthma, from one to 10 years old, had low free acidity. Another study found that after gastric (stomach) and jejunal (small intestine) biopsies from patients with asthma after having a single dose of cow’s milk, resulted in 80 percent subtotal villous atrophy (breakdown of the stomach lining).
Homeopathic Complex Remedies Every homeopathic company has complex (multiple) homeopathic remedies for the respiratory system. Remember X’s mean the substance has been diluted 10 times, so they are very diluted and safe. “4X,” for example means the substance has been diluted 10 times for four times. By the way, C’s are a hundred fold dilutions. Some remedies go as high as 50,000 C, or higher. These are all low dose remedies.
In a 1979 study, it was determined that children with milk allergies had flattened, disorganized gastric villi (stomach lining). Besides allergy elimination, he found that administering betaine hydrochloride-with pepsin (stomach acid stimulators) was also helpful in children and adults. The use of fish oils, magnesium, B6 and vitamin C also improved outcomes.
For example, the Tartephedreel from the Heel Company in Germany should be used as followed: 10 drops three times per day under the tongue. In acute disorders, use 10 drops every 15 minutes for two hours. Five drops for infants and children. It is useful for respiratory tract infection, laryngitis, bronchitis and particularly asthma and coughs. It is great for children and infants!

Of the thousands of herbs around the world for pulmonary conditions, Olbas from Switzerland is most helpful. Olbas oil contains Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Cajeput (Tea Tree Oil), Juniper, Wintergreen and Clove oils. It can be applied in the vaporizer at night, on the pajamas, directly on the chest in adults, in the bath or shower and rubbed between the hands and breathed in for acute congestion. It is particularly wonderful in the steam bath with drops under the steam outlet. It is also a great analgesic after workouts or for any sore muscles. Olbas cough syrup is very effective and gentle and contains the Olbas oil plus Thyme extract,

Chronic Dehydration Part 3, Are You Choosing Dehydration?
O
Written By JeanAnn Fitzgerald
ur culture views water as a bland, unexciting liquid in which we bathe and play. Too many misguided “experts,” including doctors, tell us that ingesting water isn’t important, and that any other liquid is a valid substitute. Because of this, we can be fooled into making lifestyle choices that almost guarantee our bodies will become dehydrated.
the proper ratio between the two. So even though water is then ingested, without salt, the water will not help the tissues. So when you put that water bottle in your backpack or lunch box, be sure you also have salt.
Processed Foods Simplify Life Multi-tasking, second job, motherhood and career, volunteering, wanting it all and not prioritizing; there aren’t enough hours in a day. Cooking is time consuming, so processed/packaged food often becomes the answer. Being pre-cooked, it takes just minutes to reheat and serve. Even children can prepare dinner.
Fads, trends, peer pressure and “ad speak” can sway us into believing we are doing the right thing for our health. Based on these selfserving influences, we can do our body great harm by depleting it of the necessary water and minerals to keep it healthy. With water being 75 percent of our overall body, our clear choice should be for maintaining a high level of it. Operating a human body without enough water is like running a race with only one shoe on. It can be done, but it’s painful, throws the body out of balance, and it’s for sure you’re not going to come out a winner.
A processed/packaged food has gone through chemical, mechanical or physical change. This includes food that has been frozen, pasteurized, fried, condensed, dried, dehydrated, canned or homogenized. The main hydration mineral lost is potassium. While salt keeps water around our cells, potassium is necessary to keep it inside our cells.
The following are some temptations that can lead to a constantly low water level called chronic dehydration.
Unless the water is used as broth, boiling food is a sure way to lose the potassium in it. Freezing also depletes potassium. Except for Vitamin C and some B Vitamins, baking, broiling and stir frying are methods that preserve the potassium.
The Outdoors Is Calling Many of us have a low tolerance for confinement in buildings, so fresh air and sunshine can be an irresistible combination. That is why we love being outdoors engaging in physical activity. Some of us work in the outdoors, including forest fire fighters, roofers, road constructors, Mid-East military soldiers, landscapers and the like. And some of us enjoy office jobs, but are devoted weekend cycle riders, runners, and hikers in the great outdoors.
Our taste buds have become so enamored with sugar and salt that we have forgotten to enjoy the natural raw flavor of our fruits and vegetables. A fresh tomato, home-grown and vine-ripened. The sweetness of a ripe watermelon. Tangy apples from the tree in your backyard. The red peppers from the neighbor’s garden. Fantabulous!
However, working and playing hard in the heat do have consequences. Dry summer air blowing against bare skin dries it out, so that water has to be constantly replaced. The same can be said for breathing dry air into moist lungs and then exhaling water out with the breath. And the temperature, past 100 degrees for weeks in many parts of the country during the summer, makes us sweat profusely, which rapidly depletes water and salt. Unlike the camel with its built in water tank, humans have only a drought priority system when dry—water is removed from less critical tissues and transported to the vital organs.
In the raw state, food delivers the most nutrients, including potassium, and is therefore healthiest providing it is not contaminated with germs. We import a lot of food from other countries where hygiene is not strict. Because this food is shipped great distances, it is exposed to many germ sources. Periodically there are product recalls because some food has been contaminated with E-coli or Salmonella bacteria, for instance. Besides nausea, diarrhea becomes a lethal problem as the body tries to wash the bacteria out of the intestines. So, water is taken from body tissues faster than you may want to drink water to replace it. World travelers and soldiers based out of the country are also prone to diarrhea and its dehydrating effects on the body. These last two examples usually have their food prepared by someone else. But when you prepare your own food, you can negate the bacteria.
A lot of us know we have to drink copious amounts of water when constantly under the dehydrating summer sun. What we may not know is that we must also take salt to replace the salt lost in perspiration. The human body is designed to maintain a water/salt balance. When it gets low on water, the body flushes salt to keep

bleach solutions. A mixture of three cups of water with one cup of white vinegar (a three to one ratio) can be sprayed on individual fruits before rinsing with clear water. Or soaking food in one gallon of water with one tablespoon of chlorine bleach for a few minutes will thoroughly kill surface bacteria. Then rinse off the bleach. Be advised that more is not better. Do not use more bleach than prescribed. And never, ever mix vinegar and bleach because the bleach then becomes highly toxic.
We rely far too much on what our taste buds tell us and not enough on the subtler messages from our bodies that warn we’ve had too much salt. This signal is tissue edema/swelling caused by the interior cell water moving to the outside to dilute the water between the cells. Human health relies on a very delicate balance between water, salt and potassium. With too much salt that balance is destroyed. The World Health Organization recommends less than 2,000 mg salt per day, and The American Heart Association says limit it to 1,500 mg. So the best way to avoid too much of it is to toss out just about everything in the cupboard that is in a package or can since they contain so much sodium. A can of Campbell’s Chicken with Herbs soup delivers 810 mg. Hamburger Helper promises 580 to 810 mg per serving. Eating at home is a viable idea since fast foods generally contain excess salt too. Chili’s Restaurant’s Chicken Club Tacos gives you 4,770 mg and Burger King’s Tender Crisp Garden Salad sports 1,740 mg. The healthiest food is perishable (fresh) and is stored in the refrigerator.
It requires minimal time to broil or stir fry some protein and add some raw vegetables and fruit for a savory meal packed full of intact nutrients and potassium.
Seeking that Taste Buzz Sea salt is produced by evaporating sea water. Rock salt got is name because it is mined from the earth and is the residual of dried land-locked lakes and seas. Both are labeled by science as sodium chloride.
There is a lot of information written by psychologists and spiritualists about regaining power over our lives. It could very well be that taking control of one’s food supply benefits not only the psyche and soul, but the very basis of our physical well being.
Since mankind began using salt well before written history, no one knows for sure when it came into use, but it has been a survivor staple for thousands of years. Salt played an important role in all civilizations because it could preserve food over winters. Due to this, explorers could carry preserved food with them for longer and farther excursions into the unknown. It also preserved the Egyptian mummies’ bodies for the next life. At times, salt has been worth more than gold.
Next month’s article will provide more lifestyle choices that lead to chronic dehydration. References:
The human tongue has a small variety of taste receptors. The tongue craves sweetness because it denotes ripe fruit. Sourness can be an alarm about spoiled food. Bitterness can warn us about poisonous substances. And we yearn for salt because it’s an essential compound for basic body function, i.e. hydration.

Cooks in the food processors’ kitchens capitalize on our salt craving. For example, the Cheez-It cracker from Kellogg has salt on the exterior to give the tongue a quick buzz and more salt in the cheese adds crunch. Still more in the dough blocks the tang that develops during fermentation and rising. A generous cup of Cheez-Its delivers 1/3 the daily salt recommendation.

As a demonstration of the important role of salt, Kellogg prepared Cheez-It with most of its salt removed. The golden yellow hue faded in intensity. The cracker became sticky when chewed and packed between the teeth. The taste became bland and even medicinal. Without salt, corn flakes taste metallic, Eggo waffles taste like stale straw. The buttery flavor of buttery crackers simply disappears. Not only do we crave salt, but it makes other things taste and feel better. Or so we think.

While so much of the body is actually water, it is up to salt and potassium to make sure the water is distributed properly. Potassium inside each body cell keeps the water inside it. Salt in the spaces around the cells keeps the water in that area. When the water around the cells contains too much salt, the water inside the cells is drawn outside to that salt so the water to salt ratio becomes more normal. This is the way the cells that make up our tissues and organs are robbed of water and begin to decline in health and efficiency.

Curing Interstitial Cystitis —As Simple As 1-2-3-4!
Written By Jeff Hanson, NMD, APH
T
hey say that interstitial cystitis (IC) is incurable. But, a new study shows that it isn’t; at least, not if the correct treatments are used. And the good news is that curing IC can be done naturally— without any drugs at all. This past February, at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ozonotherapy, Frank Shallenberger, MD and Emilia Ripoll, MD presented the results of their recent study on IC. They treated 18 patients suffering from IC, 16 women and two men. These were hard cases. Sixteen of the patients had been suffering from IC for more than five years. Six had been suffering for over ten years; and three for over 20 years. All of them had tried every alternative and traditional therapy available, and were unresponsive to everything they tried. They were all using medications, just to get by. The doctors used a four-part, three week treatment protocol they developed together. Out of the 18 patients, 10 (55 percent) were completely cured in less than three weeks. Each one of these patients remained cured for a minimum of three years follow up. Of the remaining 8 patients, only two had no response to therapy. The other six had a 60-90 percent improvement. All but the two unresponsive patients no longer required any medication for their symptoms. These are remarkable results for a disease that the Interstitial Cystitis Association says “has no cure.” The four-part program the doctors used included eliminating intestinal yeast overgrowth, balancing the hormone estrogen with progesterone, infusing precise concentrations of ozone into the bladder, and correcting pelvic floor disorder. Let’s look at each one of these treatments and see how they work. Yeast, or candida as it is often referred to, inhabits the intestinal tract. When its growth is controlled by healthy or friendly bacteria, it is harmless. However, when these bacteria are disturbed by antibiotics, stress or bad eating habits, the result is yeast overgrowth. When that happens, the overgrown yeast converts the carbohydrates in your diet into toxic fermentation products that can make you sick in a number of different ways. Many of these toxins are irritating to the bladder; and unless yeast overgrowth is controlled, it is impossible to cure IC. The good news is that controlling yeast is easy. All it takes is

medications that kill it, combined with a healthy diet and the use of probiotics to re-establish enough friendly bacteria. In most cases, this only takes three weeks. The next part of the therapy has to do with hormones. Better than 97 percent of patients who have IC are women. Why is this? Certainly one reason has to do with the hormone estrogen. We have long known that IC worsens during the days of a woman’s cycle known as ovulation. It is during ovulation that estrogen levels are at their highest. The problem is that estrogen is a very strong activator of a group of cells that line the bladder wall called mast cells. When estrogen activates these mast cells, they release inflammatory proteins that irritate, inflame and ultimately damage the bladder. Researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston have shown that mast cells and their inflammatory proteins are increased in the bladders of patients with IC. The important thing to remember here is that the female hormone progesterone decreases the sensitivity of mast cells to the actions of estrogen. So, the problem is not too much estrogen per se. It is too much estrogen for the amount of progesterone. Women that have IC almost always have too little progesterone. But once again that is an easy problem to solve. Bio-identical progesterone is readily available, and when properly prescribed will eliminate the estrogen effect. The third and most important component is ozone therapy. Ozone is a remarkable molecule. It consists of three oxygen atoms electromagnetically bound together. The oxygen that you breathe in the air has two atoms; ozone has three. It is that extra oxygen atom in ozone that provides its amazing healing powers. When infused into the bladder in very small doses, ozone does several things. First, it has an anti-inflammatory effect by decreasing the activity of the mast cells. Second, it kills any bacteria that may be present in the bladder. Repeated bladder infections are common in IC. Third, it activates the immune cells that line the bladder. And lastly, it stimulates damaged cells to replicate and replace themselves much faster than usual. Intrabladder treatments of ozone are easy, safe and painless. The last factor that Drs. Shallenberger and Ripoll found that often

needs to be treated is the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor refers to a group of muscles that regulate bladder function. Imbalances in the lower part of the back called the sacrum can interfere with the way that the pelvic floor works. If a patient with IC has any symptoms suggestive of low back pain or pelvic floor disorder, it is very important that the sacrum and the pelvic floor be treated with Prolozone therapy. Prolozone is a treatment discovered by Dr. Shallenberger that once again uses the power of ozone. In this case, the ozone is injected into the pelvic floor and sacrum ligaments.

The important thing to remember is that IC is curable. If all four of these problems are treated, there is better than a 50 percent chance of a complete cure, and up to a 90 percent chance of feeling so much better that all medications can be stopped.

Mycoplasma Part II Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.
A
report from The New England Journal of Medicine reveals that one of the first outbreaks of chronic fatigue syndrome was in Punta Gorda, Florida back in 1957. It was a strange coincidence that a week before these people came down with chronic fatigue syndrome there was a huge influx of mosquitoes into the area. Within a week, the first ever five cases of chronic fatigue syndrome were reported to the local clinic in Punta Gorda. The cases kept coming until finally 450 people were ill with the disease. The Government of Canada had established the Dominion Parasite Laboratory in Belleville, Ontario, where it raised 100 million mosquitoes a month. These insects were then infected with mycoplasma and released in certain communities in the middle of the night so that the researchers could determine how many people would become ill with myalgic encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia), which was the first disease to show up. Unless you know exactly what to look for, the cause of these vague symptoms will not be found. Many people have been told “it’s all in your head.” The US and Canada worked together on this project. It was reported by the Pentagon in a special study, commissioned by the US Senate (declassified on February 24, 1977), showing that George Merck, of the pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme—which now makes cures for diseases that at one time it created—reported in 1946 to the US Secretary of War that his researchers had managed “for the first time” to “isolate the disease agent in crystalline form.” The “disease agent” is mycoplasma. The crystalline bacterial toxin could be stored, transported and deployed without deteriorating. It could be delivered by vectors such as insects, aerosol or the food chain.

The CIA, Pentagon, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) all participated in taking these diseases that existed for thousands of years and “weaponizing” them. This means making them more contagious and more effective at killing and, more important, disabling people. It is possible that MS, Alzheimer’s and HIV/AIDS have their roots in a mycoplasma infection. Information is not generally available about this agent because this organism is so minute that normal blood and tissue tests will not reveal its presence as the source of the disease. What can be done about it...find out in next month’s article. References: 1. That data should direct specific testing recommendations that should produce relevant clinically applicable information telling the doctor which of the imbalances in the right-hand column above are causing the diagnosis of the specific chronic pain diagnosis listed on the left. That takes time. This approach doesn’t fit into the five, 10,
Continued from Page 9
The following chart is how chronic pain syndromes and cycles evolve and why they are a challenge to control with drugs, surgeries and electrical implants:
This chart represents the chronic pain conundrum. In the left column are the most common chronic pain syndromes seen in our office. They seem unconnected and unrelated. Especially to those whose frame of reference is the acute pain/specific disease-oriented diagnostic medical model. They are not. In the right-hand column are the causes and the commonalities of all chronic pain syndromes. The combination of the abnormal misfiring syndromes on the right break downs their individual cells abilities to create ATP and cause those cells dysfunction impairing their ability to “heal,” and this process results in pain.
15 minute office visits foisted upon the health care profession today by the insurance, acute pain model. But, this more comprehensive approach provides information that can then be used to craft a strategic, and most of the time, non-drug approach to substantially reducing and manage that particular patient’s pain syndrome. It may sound like a fantasy, but the functional medicine/ functional neurological model is helping patients manage their specific pain syndrome each and every day in functional offices all over the country. The functional approach is, and must be, “treat the patient and not the diagnosis,” or it will fail.
So, you can have a Fibromyalgia patient who has abnormal neurological misfiring (brain), autoimmune attacks (thyroid, bowel) and food sensitivities or anemias, hormonal imbalances, and chronic neck and low back (musculoskeletal) degenerative discs. Both are diagnosed with fibromyalgia. But the Written Martin Rutherford, D.C., mechanisms are By completely different. You can C.C.S.T. have 10 chronic and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B pain patients with the same diagnosis (fill in the blank— fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, chronic fatigue, vertigo, migraines) and they will be physiologically different, while suffering from various combinations of the imbalances listed in the right hand column. Can you see why a drug, surgery or implant will never fix anything? You need to treat the patient and not the diagnosis. Drugs, surgeries and implants only interfere with these mechanisms, they do not help them to regain their balance and function normally again.
Functional medicine is the chronic pain model of the present and the future. References:

Endurance Training for the Whole Being Part II: Cross Training
Y
Written By Rachael L. Scala
ou now know a bit about smart eating during long distance training, but are you minding your whole body’s structural condition? For example, are you maintaining your hard-earned muscles, preserving bone density and strengthening your core? Despite adhering to a training program, cross training is the most pivotal part of staying healthy during endurance training. Included in this realm is the almighty and oft ignored, REST.
your body’s different elements to work together. Through cross training, injury prevention is a lot easier. If you’re strengthening your ankles by building agility through hiking between runs, rolling them becomes less of a possibility. Resistance training in the pool or on the yoga mat strengthens weathered joints and builds bone density, minimizing the risk of breaks and pulls. Flexibility is a great indicator of overall health and is achieved through these activities.
Why is this Important?
Finally, mixing up the routine keeps training fun. For me, the monotony of running or cycling has been a buzz-kill. I find running after a day or two off is much more gratifying than running five days straight.
My approach to long-distance training entails making the whole body strong—beyond one muscle group. This type of holistic strength means you can recover faster because you’re enabling

Ways to Cross Train
There are several ways to cross train that can improve the quality of your training regimen. I categorize them in three ways: resistance, stretching and rest. It’s important to understand that you may get a combination of exercise types in some activities. For example, hiking is an aerobic exercise, but it also offers a form of resistance. Yoga can be aerobic, both stretching and rest, or stretching and resistance depending on the type you participate in. I try to get a combination of the combinations in—to keep building endurance for the initial goal (i.e. a marathon), and to keep my body off autopilot. The end result entails being more flexible, agile and injury free. In the training for my most recent race, I made a point to enjoy the thrills of summer and also not slack on my long runs or interval training. I blocked out one day a week for long runs and tried not to do anything too taxing around it. I made full use of my road bike once or twice a week, and maintained a simple home practice of yoga if I couldn’t make it to my favorite class, Dynamic Vinyasa, at the River School. Instead of feeling empty after the 18 or 20-milers, I felt fortified and my recovery over the following days was smooth. Aside from additional movement, the best thing you can really do is permit one day of rest per week. This doesn’t mean lay in a hammock all day and be a complete slob; but rather, take a day where you are not straining yourself. Make gentle movements, and let your body recover from all of the other activities. You will return to your training springy, rested and most likely, eager to get back. Fatigue won’t be as much of an issue, especially if you continue to heal with nutrition and adequate sleep.
Cross-Threading Your Spirit
Fun, strength and conditioning aside, endurance training is conditioning of the soul. You reach a quiet place where you can examine, celebrate or resolve many aspects of life. It’s emotional, pure and awakening. Why deprive a complete experience of that through boredom with the same activity? Find a new high in the mountains on a hike you’ve never been on. Try out that yoga class your friend has been trying to coordinate with you for months. Be attentive to any pains or irks your body tells you—and most of all, give yourself a big, fat hug for trying something that most people wouldn’t fathom doing!

As for my Family/Friends and Intimates, I will dedicate this month to making sure that I do all I can do to cultivate a healthy relationship built on trust and honesty. If I perceive that one of these relationships is broken, or that the trust and honesty has been breached in some way, I will accept 100 percent Accountability for the breakdown, so that the healing can begin.
Friends and Family come into your life for a reason or a season, or perhaps a few seasons, but your time with them is limited. Perhaps a beloved Grandparent or parent is in your life for a few seasons, while an adored college friend is with you throughout your academic career; but once you graduate, the friendship drifts and you’re no longer close.
For me, that means I’d rather have the relationship work, than be “right” about any given situation. If you’re committed to healing your broken or challenged relationships, consider the possibility of honoring yourself by taking the following five steps:
Business Associates come into your life for a “reason.” Perhaps they are there as your mentor, boss, coach or colleague; but none the less, you recognize that your personal life typically doesn’t include them.
1. Be willing to say, “I accept 100 percent responsibility and accountability for the breakdown of this relationship.” The other person is 0 percent responsible. It doesn’t really matter if this is not true. It is where you’ll need to stand to move the relationship forward. This is unconditional. Nothing is required from the other person. Then either reach out to them by phone or email and say:
Greater Universe refers to those people that you like, but don’t necessary feel “called” to include them in your life as either a business associate or friend. They too are in your life for a reason. They are your bank teller, dry cleaner, printer, or that specific customer service rep that you always hope to get on the phone whenever you have to call your cable provider.
2. “I apologize for______”. “I’m sorry that I_____.” Demonstrate that you’re willing to own 100 percent of the accountability for the breakdown in the relationship. 3. Communicate to them that “being in your own way” (such as being inauthentic or pretending not to notice they were upset with you) has cost you the relationship. Then tell them why they matter
So this month, I will affirm that each time I speak with an acquaintance from my Greater Universe, I will respond with a smile. Inquire as to how their day is going, or leave a slightly

to you and express your highest hope for a positive outcome. And then tell them: 4. “In our relationship what is really important to me is_________________” and what I want is to not only remain friends, but to grow in our relationship.” Then tell them: 5.
“What I’m committed to do to make this right is____________.”
6.
Finally, ask them, “Might we work on this together?”
Here are some examples of ways of “being in your own way”: 1.
A need to look good. Avoid looking bad.
2.
Playing the right/wrong game: You’re right, the other person is wrong.
3.
Playing the victim. I am a single mom…life is such a burden.
4.
Condescending, gossiping and putting down the other person.
5.
Controlling others; micro-managing.
6.
Avoiding risk and staying safe. Withholding.
7.
Being dishonest, out of integrity with yourself and your values.
8.
Victim, martyr or approval seeking.
9.
Passive-aggressive behavior or covertness.
I invite you to do something daily toward this goal. Perhaps you start with listing all of the people in your life right now that you interact with. Discern whether you are identifying them in the appropriate category. Are you calling a co-worker a “friend” when they’re really a business associate? If yes, do you need to stop or change how you interact? Perhaps stop sharing the family traumas/ business with them in the company cafeteria? When you look at your list of those in your life, are they all or nearly all “Business Associates” and you see that you have a big “void” when it comes to friends. Perhaps it’s time to invite someone you used to work with, or an acquaintance from your Greater Universe, out for coffee and let them know that you’d like to be friends. Take a risk. But most of all, take the risk to clean up any relationship that you value. It’s well worth it. Once you start, you may find that there’s nothing to fix and all is well. After you have reached out, should you discern that friendship has dissolved, understand this: Knowing the truth will only serve you. You can grieve it as you move on in gratitude for knowing the truth and for knowing you did all that you could to bring it to its natural close, with honesty and a state appreciation for having had the relationship for the season it was meant flourish in. Apple Juice
Exposed!
A
Written By Lissie Lyles
pple juice is thought of as a healthy and wholesome beverage. Most parents feel good about giving it to their children. Many fast food companies now include apple juice on their menu, as an alternative to soda. There are countless varieties of pre-bottled apple juice. Many use the claim of “High in vitamin C” as a good reason for consuming these beverages. Are they really as healthy as they claim, and what do you need to know about these juice products?
whole form. The fiber and enzymes in the fruit help our body to digest it. An average glass of apple juice would be the equivalent of consuming several apples in one sitting, but without the benefits of enzymes or fiber because the fruit juice is filtered and pasteurized. It is basically a skeleton of the fruit itself, much like refined sugar and flour. Consumption of apple juice has been linked to failure to thrive in infants. Over indulgence in fruit juice can lead to mineral deficiencies and can upset the acid-alkaline balance of the body.
The first thing to remember about bottled juice products is that regardless of whether or not they are from concentrate, they have extraordinarily high sugar content. When fruit is juiced, its sweetness is concentrated, increasing its sugar content. Most people don’t know that a glass of fruit juice contains the same amount of sugar as your average candy bar. The majority of that sugar is fructose, the most harmful form of sugar. Another way to think of it is this: Our bodies are designed to consume fruit in its
If all this does not give you pause about consuming bottled fruit juice, there is another more sinister reason to consider giving it up. Between August and September of 2011, Consumer Reports ran some tests on 88 samples of bottled apple and grape juice. The results were startling. Twenty-five percent of the samples exceeded the 5 parts per billion total limit for lead in bottled water, and 10 percent exceeded the 10 parts per billion limit for arsenic. Though there is no federal limit for the amount

of lead or arsenic that is considered safe for juices, these high numbers are disconcerting indeed. While the FDA was quick to diminish these claims, giving the excuse that the arsenic found was “organic,” and therefore not dangerous, many of the samples also contained dangerous levels of inorganic arsenic, which is known to be carcinogenic.
Some of the worst offenders for high arsenic content in apple juice included: Apple and Eve Great Value (Wal-Mart) Motts

The best way to consume apple juice is when it is freshly juiced from organically grown apples. Even then, it should be limited to an ounce at a time, diluted with water, no more than what you would consume in one serving of fruit. Remember, choose food over food products to minimize exposure to harmful contaminants that won’t be found on the ingredients list! References:

HERBS&SPICES
Skullcap Written By Allison Prater
S
cutellaria Lateriflora, or Skullcap, is native to the moist woods and meadows of North America. Sometimes known as Virginia Skullcap or Mad Dog Skullcap, it is a hardy perennial that has branching stems, oval leaves and produces blue tubular flowers in the summer. The aerial parts of the plant are the most commonly used part of the herb.
American Skullcap which primarily utilizes the flowers and leaves. Huang Chi is most often used as a cooling, antipyretic herb. It sedates in a very different way, removing heat toxin from the heart, lungs and liver. It has been used to treat jaundice, fevers, boils, carbuncles, sores, liver disease and pneumonia. Both Skullcap and Huang Chi have enjoyed a long history of use and are highly respected plant medicines. Though they are generally considered safe, neither herb should be taken without first consulting a health professional who is well versed in herbs.
Skullcap is most frequently used as a tonic to calm the nerves. The aerial parts are sedative and anti-spasmodic. In the past, it was used to treat conditions such as epilepsy and rabies. It reduces nervous tension, induces inner calm and eases insomnia. Today, it is commonly taken for depression, anxiety and nervous exhaustion; also for symptoms related to premenstrual syndrome, rheumatism and neuralgia. It has been used for easing the pain of muscular sclerosis as well.
American Skullcap can be cultivated in your own backyard. It is best started indoors, and takes about two weeks to sprout. Transplant it outside after the danger of frost has passed. Space seedlings about 12 inches apart, it will grow in large clumps. Skullcap does well in full sun to partial shade, and prefers well drained, moist soil. The aerial parts are harvested when the herb is in full flower. Cut it with scissors, about three inches above the ground.
One of the more interesting applications of Skullcap is its use in easing withdrawal symptoms from alcohol or drug dependence. It has detoxification properties that often prevent or lessen the severity of withdrawal symptoms such as delirium tremens. For the purpose of withdrawing from drugs and alcohol, skullcap is usually taken by itself, in tincture form, every few hours.

For help with sleeplessness, a typical sedative formula combines equal parts skullcap, valerian and hops, either in a tea or tincture. It is best taken one half hour before you would like to go to sleep.

It is interesting, but mostly sad, the level of hypocrisy in such an event. Protect mother earth, while you pollute your own body (which is also part of mother earth). Demand ecologically responsible government, while you arrogantly impose your will on your own life through illicit drugs. Bang the drums of energy efficiency as you embrace a lifestyle that will stunt the life sum of your own creativity.

GARDENING
“A Rough Patch” Written By Teresa Howell
Don’t Worry—We’ll Catch You
I
grow it with a little protection, you can eat it fresh all winter long.”
“You know,” Sheila said. “You could put in a little mache area at your place.”
In Europe, mache used to grow wild in the “corn,” as all grain was called before one we know as corn was available there, hence the name corn salad. It was a welcome bit of freshness in the winter diet because of a unique property: mache can freeze solid, and when it thaws, resume growing. If it is allowed to thaw completely before it’s harvested, taste and texture will be none the worse.
was having a cup at the local coffee shop when Sheila came in. We’d both been to the double-header concert the Great Basin Arts Council put on last week. The second one was definitely high energy, and the venue allowed for dancing. We chatted about how much fun we’d had, and then the conversation turned to gardening, as so many conversations seem to do. Or at least I thought we’d changed subjects.
With its mild and nutty flavor, it’s less of an acquired taste than some wild greens—arugula and dandelions come to mind. Mache is a small plant—it grows in rosettes that rarely top six inches. Although there are several varieties available in Europe, only a few have reached the American market.
“I don’t think so,” I said. “To tell you the truth, my dancing the other night was a bit of an aberration.” “Oh, don’t worry. People probably didn’t notice the way you dance. But about the mache….’ “And really, Sheila, at our age, you just don’t loft yourself into a sea of strangers. Too many brittle parts.”
The seeds germinate erratically, and it does not like heat. Some sources recommend planting mache around Labor Day. Eliot Coleman, who writes extensively about winter gardening, recommends planting mache from then through early November. Since it cools down slowly in Nevada sometimes, it’s probably best to err towards the November side.
“Not M-O-S-H,” Sheila explained. “M-A-C-H-E. Same pronunciation, different thing altogether. Mache is a salad green, sometimes called lamb’s lettuce or corn salad. If you

Coleman claims that cold isn’t the limiting factor for mache in the winter, light is. He grows it successfully in Maine, and our location considerably further south give us lots more winter daylight. He does give his mache the protection of a hoop house, with a layer of floating row cover and another of greenhouse plastic.
after another crop is finished. I plan to hot-sheet (or in this case, cold-sheet) mine with some carrots that will be used up long before mid-October, when I’ll plant it. I’ll make sure the seed-bed is nice and loose, and thoroughly moist. I may add a little compost if I’m in the mood, but not much, perhaps an inch of it.
If it is happy, mache will reseed itself prolifically, as many lettuces do. It almost serves as a groundcover in my friend Becca’s yard. Although it survives the winter for her just fine uncovered, she says that a layer of protection would help preserve the quality.
Before I plant, I’ll let the seeds soak overnight on a damp paper towel, to nudge them into breaking dormancy. Even so, I’ll use plenty of seeds and be careful not to plant them too deep. I’ll throw some floating row cover on low hoops, keep the soil moist, and hope for the best.
The difficulty with mache here in Nevada is getting it to germinate in time. Sheila claims that when she planted mache in early September, very little came up that fall, but it was out of bed really early in the spring. But as soon as the first heat hit, it turned bitter and bolted.
If it doesn’t grow, I’ll look into hiring a band to play Johnny Cash hits. After all, he penned the ultimate mosh lyrics: “I fell down, down, down in a freezing pit of mosh. . .”
Since mache can be planted late in the season and its fertility needs are only moderate, mache is ideal to tuck in

BOOKREVIEW
LEVERAGING THE UNIVERSE
T
7 Steps to Engaging Life’s Magic By Mike Dooley
Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
his is the third book in a series exploring the ideas of selffulfillment, personal success and spiritual accountability. Mike Dooley’s first two books, Infinite Possibilities and Manifesting Change were New York Times best sellers. In this latest book, he explains that in just seven steps, you can channel the Universe’s incredible energy to achieve your dreams. This is accomplished through practical strategies and simple exercises that anyone can do. The most important and most basic idea in this book is “thoughts become things.” The second most basic is that you “must take action toward your goals.” Everything else stems from these premises. If you consciously control what you think about, talk about and expect, and also create “traction through action,” you basically cannot fail. Mike is an advocate of the famous Goethe quote, “Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would otherwise never have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no one could have dreamt would come this way. So whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. For boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
The seven steps to an amazing life begin with Understanding Your Power. Not understanding our power and its source is the number one reason people give up on their dreams. However, with understanding, doubt is banished, confidence soars, and living deliberately, rather than by default, becomes automatic. Charting Your Course and taking stock of where you are now, no matter where you are, and answering three simple questions will reveal what you can immediately begin doing to bring about major life changes—even if you don’t know down to the last nitty-gritty detail exactly what you do want. Taking Action and Delegating is vital. Knowing what you can, should and must do—versus what you mustn’t ever do, and knowing what you must delegate, is crucial.
Mike is a former tax consultant turned entrepreneur, who’s founded a philosophical Adventurers Club on the internet that is now home to over 425,000 members from over 182 countries. His inspirational books have been published in 25 languages and he was one of the featured teachers in the international phenomenon, The Secret. Today, Mike is well known for his free Notes from the Universe e-mailings.
Leveraging the Universe by learning how to playfully use your thoughts, words and deeds will bring exponential returns on your effort. This is beyond having a vision and running with it. Aligning Your Beliefs with your dreams is basic. Knowing what you want and aligning your beliefs, thoughts and expectations with those goals and dreams is the very foundation of change.
An example of a Note From the Universe is: “Tell you what: if you can get happy right now, in spite of any problems, challenges and circumstances that seem to taunt you, I’ll take care of those problems, challenges and circumstances, as well as the ever after. Do the math, take the bait, and never look back. Tallyho! The Universe.”
Engaging the Magic by persisting toward your goal causes an unpredictable evolution of events, circumstances and ideas which will ultimately bring about the manifestation of your dreams. Adjusting Your Sails while being sure you’re on course is vital. At first, there may be no trace of “land on the horizon” even though you’re under full sail, but there are ways to assure you’re on course, despite appearances.

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK
VITAL, LIFE-GIVING IDEAS IN A TIME OF PROFOUND CHANGE Written By Eric Francis
Horoscope for Health | October - 2012
O
n October 5, Saturn enters Scorpio, which it last did in November 1982, when Ronald Reagan was president and we were all much younger. Saturn takes about 10 seasons to pass through a sign, so it counts as one of those “for the foreseeable future” transits. Among other things, Saturn represents the principle of necessity, and we certainly have needs where Scorpio is concerned. This sign covers shared resources, sexuality, sexual health, commitments, secrets and our deepest passions. I will have more to say about these things, where space permits on PlanetWaves.net. This month, the Libra New Moon is Oct. 15. The Aries Full Moon is Oct. 29. Mercury is direct this month, though it goes retrograde again on Nov. 8. Aries (March 20-April 19) What is a healthy level of dependency in your relationships? There are two ways to answer: one is whatever degree feels helpful and functional, understanding that we need one another. The other is the level of dependency that supports your pressing agenda of being a more independent person. You have many options open along these lines, though what I suggest you remember is your drive for freedom from codependency (choose your definition of that word) and the many reminders you’ve had that you’re on the right track with this agenda. At the same time, notice the many ways that relationships as we think of them are often places where giving up independence is one of the first requirements. You’re walking a fine line in sorting out this material, though I am sure you recognize the time has come to work this out.
body; what you do with and how you take care of your body; and what you tell your children. Now is the time to take care of all necessities related to reproductive health, as well as sex education. Start with educating yourself, going deep enough that you get answers to all of your pending questions. Then, make the information easy enough to understand so that you can relate it to your partner(s) and any young people who need to know. Cancer (June 21-July 22) Risk and reward--the time has come to balance these. This includes being willing to take risks for the rewards that you want, as well as being willing to delay gratification while you take the necessary steps to keep your life functional while you build what you want. What both of these have in common are the idea of a conscious, long-term goal. There’s the implication that you have a diversity of responsibilities, and that these must be taken into account simultaneously, when they seem to conflict. The ability to embrace contradiction and paradox is one mark of maturity, and this is a core theme of your life now. To do this, you can no longer assess things strictly based on how they feel; adding logic is what will actually get you from one place to the next.
Taurus (April 19-May 20) There is such a thing as a mature relationship, though it’s not what most people think it is. I can leave out the definition, not because it isn’t essential, but rather because it takes care of itself when an essential element of authenticity is present: and that is trust. Trust does not take care of itself; it needs to be cultivated and maintained as a conscious act, usually from day to day. I suggest you do a trust inventory of your relationships, and include looking at the ways in which you extend trust to others and signal that you’ve done so, as well as the ways that the people you’re in any way partnered with extend trust back to you. Then, consider the ways that any given relationship reaches out into the social environment. Is anything missing? Now is the time to address it.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) The time has come to stretch your boundaries, and deepen your roots. This may come in the form of making room in your life for your relationships--which could include putting yourself into a larger, better space. The physical space you live in must accommodate your life, and the people in it. Looking at it one way, your space serves as a container for your emotions. Remember this, as you make decisions for how to organize yourself, where to live and how you coexist with any space you’re in. Said another way, I suggest you locate yourself in places where you feel good about yourself, and where you feel like a larger person--not a more powerful or authoritative one, but someone more embracing of your own potential. Remember to leave yourself room to grow.
Gemini (May 20-June 21) Your sign is associated with the health of the lungs, though I would take the story a little lower on the totem pole--your pelvis and any function associated with it: for example, your reproductive health. We live in an era when this topic has become a political bonfire, but it’s distinctly personal. It relates to how you feel about your

October 2012
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) True intelligence blends every level of thought, perception and sensation. It’s a whole-being kind of experience. This is to say, if you want to be smarter, be more open to the many facets of who you are. And remember, there’s nothing like self-criticism to get in the way of these things, though it often feels like the opposite should be true. For example, it might seem logical that the more you push yourself to be perfect, the more perfect you’ll be, however, human sensitivity doesn’t work that way. I suggest you work on being open minded, exactly in the place where you discover yourself to be closed. Monitor your language; when you make an argument for a limitation, open up to the possibility that you can go beyond it. Remember that there are no limits on who you can become.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) You need fewer, better friends who understand that friendship is more than palling around. It’s a matter of mutual support and integrity. Some of the people who will become more significant in your life over the next few years you already know. Some you’ve yet to meet, though the situation is similar with both--their presence will come into focus as you make certain recognitions about your own self-worth, your value to others, and what this informs you about your role in the world. This is about a phase of settling in: it’s as if you relax into how you present yourself, what your purpose is and accepting what you offer to others. That will have a way of commanding the loyalty and respect of others, based on both emotional harmony and sense of purpose.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) This month’s New Moon in your birth sign opens up a new phase of your life and of your relationships. Yet there’s a specific focal point, which is moving forward remembering that you don’t have to make up for the emotional inadequacies of others, or tell them who they are, or provide stability when they act like they don’t know. The heart of the matter is a caution about “bringing out” who another person is, or helping save them from their personality chaos. You have your hands full figuring out who you are, what you want and what your purpose is; doing this for anyone else right now would qualify as a significant distraction. Yet there’s a lot you can learn from the ways that people “search for” themselves: in particular, what doesn’t work so well.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) You’ve always felt like it was your place to accomplish great things. Now you get to address the obstacles that were in the way--and take the next step into tangible achievement. Yet this is very much a matter of taking things one step at a time, which you may have figured out was necessary a while ago. Remember that the idea is to learn how to get out of your own way--rather than to put new obstacles in your path. Yet you’re not always sure the difference between these two things. Initially, I suggest that you set out to accomplish less than you think you’re capable of, rather than shooting for the Moon. Know your vision, select one key piece of it, and give yourself the rest of the year to make it real. This will help you build your confidence on something solid.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Saturn’s ingress into your sign opens an extended phase of what one astrologer once described to me as “coming to terms with yourself.” That’s a kind of reconciliation, an understanding, and an exploration of your potential and your limits. Though they’re not usually considered compatible ideas, your potential and your limits are closely related; they’re aspects of the same thing. You might think that your limits are a description of your outermost potential, though I think that they show you what you can, and will, go beyond. Therefore I suggest you look at everything as an opportunity. When you reach a spot where you think you cannot go any further, that’s the place to reach beyond. Use your intelligence, use your determination, use your desire--use everything to your advantage.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Remember the importance of agreements, and how this differs from a tacit understanding. I suggest that you start a trend of making things conscious, if not in writing, then in words spoken. Remember to state outright what is important to you, and to remember to listen when others state what is important to them. That’s one thing you can depend on--people will say what matters, though most of the time, nobody is listening. I suggest you listen, both to others and to yourself. This will help you have grounded expectations, which are the only legitimate kind, as well as the grounds to pass on situations that don’t serve your own good. I assure you of one thing: you have options, and therefore can afford to be selective.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)You’re embarking on an extended phase of psychological housekeeping. This may involve “cleanup” from years, decades or generations of ordinary living and perhaps some neglect as well. You could say that this is a time of revealing your secrets to yourself. One aspect of your nature is that you tend to see yourself as a simple person with easily understood motives; what you’re about to discover is the complexity of both who you are, and what drives you to be that person. Said another way, there’s a lot you don’t know about yourself--and you’re now on the way to finding out just what that is. There are facts of your life that you can no longer deny, and I would propose that this can come as a relief.

NATURALSOLUTIONS
Heal Your Chronic Back Pain Naturally
C
Written By Dr. Daniel S. Smith, D.C.
hronic back pain can make your life miserable! Fortunately, there are a number of natural avenues for treating chronic back pain. One very effective method is amino acid and micronutrient supplementation, in conjunction with chiropractic care. If you suffer from chronic back pain, it is very likely that your body is deficient in some key nutrients. Our bodies are designed with a natural capacity to heal; but they rely on essential nutrients from our diets, and often times, from supplements. Without all of the required nutrients, our bodies’ natural healing process is slowed or halted. This can lead to “chronic” or long-term pain. Did you know that our bodies actually produce natural pain reducing chemicals known as “endorphins”? They do; however, over fifteen precursor amino acids are required to synthesize these endorphins. Thus, a hidden amino acid deficiency can lead to multiple physical and emotional difficulties and a variety of symptoms. Endorphins are our body’s natural “morphine.” Initially, if you have an injury or trauma, your body will supply you with plenty of endorphins to assist in reducing the degree of pain you experience. The problem is, if the pain continues week after week, month

after month and year after year, your body uses up its endorphin supplies. It is very difficult to get sufficient amino acids from your daily dietary intake to maintain the level of endorphins needed to deal with chronic physical pain. Back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a chiropractor. Doctors of Chiropractic use chiropractic spinal manipulation to restore joint mobility. They manually apply a controlled force to joints that have become restricted by muscle injury, strain, inflammation and pain. Manipulation is believed to relieve pain and muscle tightness and encourage healing. Free-form amino acids can be used in adjunct to chiropractic care—as a type of “metabolic tune-up.” This nutritional approach to back health—amino nutrients—provides the synergy necessary for recovery from chronic back pain. Traditionally, correcting spinal misalignments and relieving nerve pressure with a specific hands-on chiropractic adjustment to the misaligned vertebrae can relieve pain, while balancing the brain and central nervous system by restoring clear communication between the body and the brain. This concept of balancing the nervous system from a chiropractic adjustment allows our natural innate intelligence to restore optimal function and health in each individual.

However, chronic pain suggests a possible amino acid deficiency and the need for foundational nutrient intake in addition to traditional adjustments. When one experiences physical stress, including injury, inflammation or infection, their body requires an increased supply of essential and conditionally essential amino acids to support, defend and repair. Hidden amino acid deficiencies can be alleviated easily and safely with a complete blend of free form amino acids. Having these nutrients readily available in a form that requires no digestion for assimilation provides one with the broad-based amino acid nutrients that aid in strengthening the immune system and reducing inflammation, thus allowing for healing. Furthermore, the evidence is strong that along with amino acids the following micronutrients are essential to relieve chronic pain:
• Vitamin D - chronic muscle pain can be a symptom of Vitamin D deficiency • Vitamin B12 - has been found to relieve low back pain • Magnesium - is essential for healing muscle pain and nerve pain; symptoms of magnesium deficiency include muscle spasm and pain • Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids - aid in reducing inflammation in chronic pain Designed with their own analgesic system, our bodies can often be restored to optimum, pain-free health with proper nutritional support and health care assistance. Conquering C lutter
C
Written By June Milligan, Med., CCHt
lutter is a big problem for a growing number of people. We’ve been programmed by the culture, as well as by corporations and the media, to buy, buy, then buy some more. We’ve been conditioned to believe that the more things we have, the happier we’ll be. Therefore many of us engage in compulsive shopping, becoming involved in the constant search for something interesting to buy. In addition to the regular shopping opportunities, there are bargain sales, flea markets, garage sales, online auctions and more. Some of us love information, so we also collect articles, books and magazines. Unless these items are organized in some way, and therefore serve as a source of comfort and peace for us in that we know where certain items are—the clutter becomes an energy drain. So even if you want to start organizing it or tossing some of it, you don’t have the energy. You are stopped in your tracks every time you try. There is a big possibility that the reason is in your subconscious mind.
Visit www.HBmag.com
Studies have shown that there are two types of cluttered people: those who have been chronically cluttered since childhood and those who have become cluttered since a life-changing event. Some of the examples are heartbreaking. One woman told the story of her father throwing away all her toys every time the family moved. He didn’t want to pay the fee for the extra packaging or shipping. When she got out on her own, she found that she couldn’t even discard a candy wrapper. Her hoarding drove her husband and grown children away. She didn’t know that she could get help for those repeated traumas of seeing her most beloved toys tossed out or left behind. Most cluttered people have high creativity and a high intelligence quotient. It goes without saying that most have a spending compulsion or they find other methods of obtaining things. Many have an attitude of lack and limitation, fearing that if they don’t save that item they won’t be able to afford to buy it later. For most,

there’s usually an inability to discard items for fear that they, or someone else, will need it sometime. Most clutterers have dysfunctional time management issues such as procrastination or being chronically late, or committing to more things than they can possibly do. Some cluttererbugs may have money management problems such as habitually paying bills late. Some are loners because of the embarrassment of the clutter. Clutterers may be overweight or have compulsive eating habits. Many are heavy recyclers, but don’t take the time to fix the articles or take them to the appropriate distribution center, so they just pile up. And for some plagued by clutter, OCD or ADHD may be a problem. As you can see, being a cluttered person is not usually an isolated issue. It either causes or exists along with other personal challenges. If your parents grew up during the Depression, they were conditioned to save everything and use it till it was just a rag, and then use it some more. Every thought and emotion has a vibrational frequency, so as you were growing up, you were bombarded constantly with those frequencies of fear of having nothing and therefore the need to “save” what you DO have and to recycle it. Some people are so deeply programmed with these ideas that they find it actually physically painful to throw anything away.
chaotic mind. The reverse is also true. A chaotic mind almost always creates a chaotic environment. So this turns into a vicious cycle. If you are suffering from clutter, take your power back now and choose to control your environment instead of letting it control you. References:

So what’s the solution? If someone really wants to become organized and move on toward their goals and dreams, it’s possible to remove the negative emotions from scenes and memories which may be causing this “hoarding” behavior. Hypnosis is an effective way to address this issue, as change occurs in the subconscious mind; but as in anything else, you must WANT to change. Hypnosis is totally useless if you don’t want to change; your subconscious mind will NOT accept directions or suggestions toward anything we don’t really want to do. If you DO want to change your clutter habits and move ahead without that old baggage, hypnosis is a great assist. If you don’t care about whether you’re cluttered or not, stop worrying about what anyone else thinks. What they think of you is none of your business. You can’t stand on your head in enough ways to please even one person, much less a whole group of friends or family, mainly because they keep changing their minds about what you should do, be and have. So just please yourself. If you DO want to change, and think you could be living a happier more productive, more satisfying life without the clutter, there are things you can do. Clutter management has become a real business, and there are people who specialize in helping you get physically organized. There are dozens of books on this subject, some of which are listed below. We know that a chaotic environment creates a

appy Halloween! I hope that all of you are having a fantastic school year so far! Halloween is a great holiday; it was actually called Hallow’s Eve back in the day, when not even your great, great, great-grandmother or grandfather were alive. Hallow’s Eve was viewed as a day to celebrate the dead; most people would attend church to pray for the dead and then return home and feast with family and close friends. It is only now that it is a fun holiday with trick-or-treating and costumes. Today, people even play games during Halloween parties, like bobbing for apples. They used to play games during Hallow’s Eve as well. One game had to do with unmarried women. It was said that if an unmarried woman sat in a dark room in front of a mirror on Halloween night that her future husband would appear before her in the mirror, but if she was destined to die before marriage, a skull would appear before her. Creepy right? Christians used to believe that Hallow’s Eve was a day for the dead and only the dead. It was not joyous. They believed that the dead who still walked the earth, waiting to go to heaven, would have to wait until All Saints Day; Hallow’s Eve was a chance for the dead still walking the earth to get vengeance on their enemies. So, Christians would wear masks and costumes to hide their true identity. That eventually turned into children wearing funny costumes and trick-or-treating.
Here is a way to eat healthy while keeping the Halloween spirit. Here are some great recipes for your Halloween enjoyment!

While meatballs simmer with veggies, add the butter to the skillet on medium heat; with wire whisk stir in unbleached flour, making a roux. When roux has browned, whisk in1 C cold water. Simmer until thickened; then pour into meatball and veggie pot. Serve from the pot or remove to a serving dish.
