WA L K TO BE H E A LT H Y, WA L K TO BE H A P P Y. ”

– CHARLES DICKENS

WA L K Y O U R WAY T O A H E A LT H Y H A L L O W E E N Written by Gabrielle Irvin What do we think of when we think of October? Pumpkins, harvest festivals, crisp fall breezes, apple cider and, of course, Halloween festivities. Now, what do we think of when we think of Halloween? Costumed children – and adults – scary movies, spooky, spiderthemed parties, haunted houses and, of course, trick-or-treating. While it’s true that Halloween compels us to eat one-too-many hors d’oeuvres, drink one-too-many apple cocktails and indulge in one-too-many pieces of candy, we often don’t think about the one healthy thing that Halloween does compel us to do – walk. Trick-or-treating encourages children, family members and friends to enjoy fresh air, explore our local neighborhoods and walk – uphill and downhill, left to right. Walking regularly helps us: • Maintain a healthy weight • Strengthen bones and muscles • Improve mood, balance and coordination • Improve cardiac risk factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, vascular stiffness and inflammation The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults should do moderateintensity exercise (such as brisk walking) for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Walking is an extremely effective, and undervalued, form of exercise. Walking will give you a break from the demanding routines of daily life – a nice plus for mental health. Help yourself build a daily walking routine with these tips: • Set yourself up for success: Start with a simple goal, such as, “I’ll take a 10-minute walk during my lunch break.” When your 10-minute walk becomes a habit, set a new goal, such as, “I’ll walk for 20 minutes after work.” • Make walking enjoyable: If you don’t enjoy walking alone, ask a friend or neighbor to join you. If you enjoy group interactions, join or create a

2

walking group. Try listening to music while you walk. • Vary your routine: If you walk outdoors, plan several different routes for variety. If you’re walking alone, be sure to tell someone which route you’re taking. Walk in safe, well-lit locations. One of the nice things about walking is that you don’t need a special skill, just walk naturally and comfortably. However, if you want to aim for an ideal stride, follow these tips on walking form: • Keep your posture erect with your chin up, your eyes forward and your shoulders square. • Keep your back straight, belly flat and butt tucked in. • Keep your arms close to your torso, bent at the elbow. • Take a natural stride, but try to lengthen your stride as you improve. • Land on your heels, and then roll forward to push off with your toes. • Swing your arms with each stride and keep up a steady, rhythmic cadence. Are you ready to get outside and walk Northern Nevada’s lovely neighborhoods and trails this fall? We are! If you’re preparing your children for a fun night of trick-or-treating, stay safe and have a freaky fun time with these tips: • Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. • Carry a flashlight and use in poorly-lit areas. • Walk – don’t run – from house to house. • Look both ways before crossing the street. Use sidewalks and crosswalks when possible. • Wear well-fitting masks, costumes and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips and falls.

appy Halloween! Fall is now in full swing, and I probably don’t need to mention that we are quickly approaching the holiday season.

It’s a good time to start making a plan about your personal approach to the potential stresses of the holiday season, and outlining ideas about how you will find time to give yourself a chance to relax each day. We are fortunate that the weather continues to be so beautiful in our community, and affords many opportunities to continue to get out and enjoy outdoor activities! Take advantage of the beautiful fresh air and changing fall colors, and take time to reflect. This month, we are pleased to welcome our new Healthy Beginnings product manager, Gabrielle Irvin. “Gabby” will take the reins as editor and will manage the publication each month. She received her master’s degree in news-editorial journalism from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and has several years of experience in health writing and media sales. We are very fortunate to have Gabby’s skill set and expertise at the helm. We hope you enjoy this month’s publication, as it is packed with valuable information about the spine and its impact on health, the value of a vision board and the tactics used to help in reversing heart disease. We also shed light on the importance of researching the origins of restaurant chain foods, and share some new techniques on how to improve your sex life! “Like” us on Facebook and take advantage of our daily health tips; check us out on Instagram and Twitter, too!

Tricks, treats and tips to maintain a healthy mouth this fall

Make your own organic, all-natural candy this Halloween!

• Finely chop a 4-ounce bar of organic dark chocolate. • Fill the bottom half of a double boiler with water and bring the water to a simmer. Place the chocolate in the top half of the boiler and place over the simmering water. Be careful that the water doesn’t boil or splash into the chocolate, because any moisture will cause it to seize. Stir when the chocolate turns glossy and soft to the touch.

Written by Gabrielle Irvin

Ahhh, autumn – the season that brings mild, sweater-friendly weather, bright hues of gold and red, and sweet cinnamon-sprinkled treats. October marks the start to the holiday season, a time to celebrate family, friends and, of course, food. While cinnamon-infused pumpkin pies and honey-glazed hams may be on the menu for your upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings, candy (and lots of it) will most likely be a hefty side to your Halloween meal. Americans buy 90 million pounds of chocolate during the week of Halloween. The majority of U.S. households turn to chocolate when treating trick-ortreaters, with M&Ms, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers leading the way. Nutritionally and dentally speaking, America’s candy obsession is spooky scary. For example, two fun-sized Snickers count as a serving size, and they contain 160 calories (8 percent of the standard daily allotment of 2,000 calories) and 3 grams of saturated fat (15 percent of the daily limit of 20 grams). The increased consumption of sweet treats and processed foods may not only make you add another notch to your belt, it may also add another cavity to your molar. Practice these oral health habits to ensure that you maintain a healthy mouth – and body – this Halloween. Choose candy carefully: Avoid hard candy and other sweets that stay in your mouth for a long time. The length of time sugary food is in your mouth can subject teeth to an increased risk for tooth decay. Avoid sticky candies: Sticky candies cling to your teeth. The stickier candies, like taffy and gummies, take longer to get washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay.

Healthy Beginnings • October 2016

• Dip organic dried mango, papaya, apricot, pomegranate, pineapple, cranberries or your favorite dried fruit into the melted chocolate. • Place chocolate-covered fruits on a parchment-lined baking sheet and chill until set, about 10 minutes. • Store in a cool area and share with friends and family.

Brush twice a day: Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. Floss your teeth: Floss your teeth once a day. Flossing helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line. The importance of oral hygiene extends beyond the mouth, as the health of your teeth and gums can affect your body’s overall health. Poor oral health might contribute to various diseases including cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and even diabetes. Therefore, be cognizant of the sweet treats you consume this season, and work to maintain a healthy diet and dental routine.

The Benefits of Light Therapy Written by Diane Underwood

L

IGHT EMITTING DIODES HAVE BEEN SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN to stimulate cells for collagen production via mitochondrial (ATP) production, hair loss, pain relief, and bone and nerve regeneration. Current trends also tout skin renewal, from age spot lightening to softening wrinkles to fat reduction.

Photon therapy makes a much safer alternative to Botox injections for wrinkles. Photobiomodulation is the application of light that has been noted for ATP (mitochondrial production), cellular stimulation and neuro-restorative therapy. NASA spent billions on specific light frequencies (biotechnology) to grow plants without the natural UV (ultra violet), infrared light and heat from the sun. They found that 670nm (nanometer) red, 470nm blue and near infrared wavelengths replicated photosynthesis artificially. Many of the scientists reported benefits such as skin renewal, weight loss, hair regrowth, and pain and/or stress relief. Red lasers are commonly used for restoring hair. The 670nm red is the magical frequency noted in medical studies and used by many devices. Lasers have been used for acupuncture to stimulate immunity, enhance energy and reduce fat cells. Working on only one meridian to stimulate immune function makes sense. But why not treat the entire body with light to target its entirety? Blue lights are reported to help with fatigue, pain, relaxation as well as photo facial for darker skin types. Near infrared light waves are proven to aid in circulation and metabolism, and are also proven to prevent neurotoxicity. The National Library of Medicine has more than 26 million citations for biomedical and life sciences studies. A public collective collaboration to help guide physicians to research conditions as well as other applications is and has been at our fingertips. Above all, positive results may be only a potential for some. For more information, call Diane Underwood, Reverse Aging Energy Spa, at 775-233-4878.

The Vampire Techniques Get Personal

(for her) Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

In our introduction to “The Vampire Series” in the August 2016 issue of Health Beginnings Magazine, we introduced the concept of extracting stem cells via Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as a means of stimulating new collagen, blood vessels and fatty tissue generation to “repair” maturing skin, hair and hormonal decline.

8

Last month we combined our extracted platelet rich fibrin matrix with hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and studied Leonardo da Vinci’s concept of the “Golden Ratio,” a mathematical delineation of proportion and symmetry to enhance attractiveness in the face, defining the Vampire FaceLift®1. Prior to March 27, 1998, the day the Food And Drug Administration greenlighted Viagra, there was little to no discussion about difficulties with sexual activity and sexual fulfillment. It was one of those “you’re getting old” issues we just dealt with. Nowadays, sporting events, cab rides and doctor visits once populated with “happy” talk invariably veer into the realm of the once taboo. (Interestingly, Viagra was developed accidentally, as its original function was to be used as a cardiovascular drug due to its ability to lower blood pressure.)

When Viagra and its rivals, Levitra and Cialis, proved either ineffective or side effects intolerable, we researched for the next best thing, and voilà!, Platelet Rich Plasma, the Vampire FaceLift® and Vampire Breast Lift® , among others, proved safe and effective “down there.” The O-Shot® for gals (and the P-Shot® for guys) are absolute game changers when it comes to improving sensitivity, intensity and ease of orgasm. Male and female sexual dysfunction is no small problem, as it affects 31 percent of men and 43 percent of women respectively2. In our practice we see a skewed population, with 80 to 90 percent of our patients presenting with some sort of sexual difficulty. FOR HER: THE O-SHOT® The O-ShotTM is a nonsurgical, autologous injection, delivering lasting improvements in the sexual performance of women. It rejuvenates the vagina and clitoris and reawakens the orgasmic response.

October 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

HOW DOES THE O-SHOT® WORK? Platelet Rich Plasma contains multiple growth and healing factors. PRP stimulates healing and rejuvenation, resulting in tissue growth, new blood vessel formation and improved pelvic circulation. The “O-Shot” is injected, after properly anesthetizing the area with Platelet Rich Plasma, triggering the release of eight different growth factors activating unipotent stem cells located in vaginal and clitoral tissues3. The result is a regeneration and improvement of your functional potential. Often the O-Shot® effects are frequently noticed immediately as the growth factors rejuvenate and enhance your sexual response.

AND NOW, FOR A REAL GAME CHANGER!

BENEFITS OF THE O-SHOT® Each patient’s experience varies, but the most common responses to the O-Shot® are: • Greater arousal from clitoral stimulation • Increased sexual desire

• A tighter vaginal opening “Side effects” of the O-Shot® include vaginal lubrication and improved urinary incontinence. The O-Shot® is the perfect complement to our Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Program for Women. Next month we discuss the P-Shot® for guys. Designed to deliver lasting improvements in sexual performance, increased girth and length of the penis, stronger erections, increased sensation and pleasure, and enhanced sexual performance, the P-Shot® restores function jeopardized by prostate enlargement, prostate cancer, the aftereffects of surgery, drug side effects and other conditions such as diabetes. ADDRESSING

PART 2

THE PROBLEM OF

Written by Andy Drymalski, Ed.D. An important first step in addressing the problem of evil involves the definition or description you give to it. From my observations, evil is a force that corrodes and eats away at the human spirit in whatever way and to whatever degree it can. It delays, derails or puts an end altogether to the natural unfolding of your deepest potential, or destiny. It seeks the destruction of goodness in all of its forms–such as love, creativity, consciousness, healing and maturation. Evil can strike with the swiftness of a rattlesnake or the slow methodicalness of a strangling vine. It will crush your spirit, if given the opportunity, by sowing seeds of discouragement, cynicism, bitterness and resentment. It may cause you to doubt or deny that there is a deeper purpose to life. Neil Young sang that “rust never sleeps,” and neither does evil. It weakens and destroys the life-preserving and life-giving energies at the core of the personality. In its darkest form–what is called archetypal evil–it is a force which seeks the torture, humiliation, degradation and enslavement of the soul. It wants power and control and seeks to usurp the role of God. It enjoys chaos, disobedience and pain for their own sake and revels in the destruction of goodness. This is because, at its core, archetypal evil is driven by revolt against the authority and dominion of God or, in psychological terms, against the Self.

10

It commandeers the ego in its attempts to establish itself as the center of the total personality. The result of such possessions are individuals who covet absolute power, would subjugate all things and people to their own will, and delight in the infliction of pain. Wheels within wheels, traps and tricks within other traps and tricks. There are times when we are like mice in a house booby-trapped by evil. You encounter situations where the powers that be are set to crush you, and every which way you turn, every option you see is as bleak and black as the next,

“Rust never sleeps...” — Neil Young

and all that you can do is pursue the lesser of two evils (or three or four) and pray for the best. Damage control over damage avoidance. Like a bad move in chess, the more experienced and knowledgeable player can see how the game is going to play out long before the novice. You are trapped, you’ve been tricked and you don’t have much choice but to take your beating and hope it is not too severe.

portrayed as a conscious being in literature and movies, it is also depicted as such in our dreams through figures such as the devil or demons. In addition, individuals who have become possessed by evil, or who have made a conscious choice to serve evil, behave in these very ways. The movements of evil in the world are not blind, probabilistic or random. Rather, evil seems to be exceedingly clever, calculating, organized and coordinated in the pursuit of its goals. The cunning and complexity of archetypal evil strongly suggests a force with its own personality structure and form of consciousness. In fact, encounters with evil may cause you to wonder, as did religious philosopher Nicolas Berdyaev, whether the powers of darkness are not smarter than the powers of light.

Life can slip sideways into hell faster than you can blink your eye. An archetypal pattern gets triggered and all of the sudden you get to play the victim in a sadistic drama that plods inexorably to its devilish end. Perhaps it’s the dawning awareness that the person you are engaged to marry doesn’t have a conscience, that your angry spouse is going to punish you in divorce and afterwards, that you have contracted For more information, call Dr. Andy a potentially deadly Drymalski, Reno and Carson City hospital infection. CERVICAL VERTEBRAE C1-C7

"The cervical spine (sometimes abbreviated as c-spine in the medical world) begins at the base of the skull. Seven vertebrae make up the cervical spine with eight pairs of cervical nerves. The individual cervical vertebrae are abbreviated C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7. The cervical nerves are also abbreviated; they are C1 through C8." 1

"The nervous system controls and coordinates all organs and structures of the human body. Misalignments of the spinal vertebrae and disc may cause irritation to the nervous system and affect the structures, organs and functions which may result in the conditions or symptoms.” 2 Each level of the spine has two nerve roots – one on the right and one on the left side the spinal cord – where they exit the spinal canal through a hole called the foramina, which is made between the two vertebrae. At this

SPINAL NERVE level is where they get their name. The C5/ C6 vertebrae area is where the C6 nerve exits. Our nerves provide control and sensation to different parts of the body based on the spinal level from where they exit the vertebrae. Looking more specifically at the cervical spine nerves and their function:

C1, C2 & C3 (the first three cervical nerves) control the head and neck, including movements forward, backward and to the sides. These nerves also play key roles in breathing. The C2 dermatome handles sensation for the upper part of the head, and the C3 dermatome covers the side of the face and behind the head. "A spinal cord injury and nerve damage at these levels are most serve in nature." 3 This is the area of the spine where Christopher Reeves, formerly known as Superman, broke his neck. If you have irritations to these nerves you could be possibly having symptoms like high blood pressure, nervousness, headaches, migraines, dizziness and chronic tiredness, to name a few.

C7 controls the triceps (the large muscle on the back of the arm that allows for straightening of the elbow). The C7 dermatome goes from the shoulder down the back of the arm and into the middle finger. An irritation to this level may cause: thyroid conditions, colds and bursitis.

C8

C4 helps control the shoulders as well as the diaphragm – the sheet of muscle that stretches to the bottom of the rib cage – for breathing. The C4 dermatome covers the neck and top of the shoulders. An irritation at this level may cause: hearing loss, hay fever or allergy symptoms.

C5 controls upper body muscles like the deltoids (which form the rounded contours of the shoulders) and the biceps (which allow flexion of the elbow and rotation of the forearm). The C5 dermatome covers the shoulders and outer part of the arm down to about the elbow or close to the wrist. An irritation at this point may cause: laryngitis, hoarseness and sore throats.

C6 controls the wrist extensors that control wrist extension and hyperextension, and also provides some innervation to the biceps. The C6 dermatome covers the top of the shoulders and runs down the side of the arm and into the thumb side of the hand. An irritation at this level may cause: stiff neck and shoulders, coughing and tonsillitis.

controls the hands. The C8 dermatome covers the lower part of the shoulder and goes down the arm into the pinky side of the hand. An irritation at this level may cause: asthma, coughing, difficult breathing, shortness of breath and pain in the lower arm and hands area. 1,2 When these highly sensitive cervical nerves are irritated from injuries, poor posture, sleeping wrong, stress, herniated disc and stenosis (a narrowing of the foramina), to name a few, they can cause neck pain and other symptoms, as noted above. It is always best to keep these nerves functioning at their best to help keep you at your optimum health. You should have them checked by a doctor to help prevent future problems, or to rule out any symptoms you may be experiencing now. For more information, call Jensen Chiropractic at (775) 232-1222. hysterectomy (let’s not mess around with this uterus any longer).

None of these therapies answer the causal question of “How did I get here in the first place?” Amazingly enough, low thyroid levels have long been related to menorrhagia.1 However, the low thyroid condition does not always show up on lab tests. As I have often written in these pages, environmental pollutants are endocrine (hormone) disruptors and can block the thyroid message at the tissue and organ level. Patients with low body temperature (normal 1st AM under arm temperatures should be 98 +/-.2 degrees), coldness, fatigue, dryness, falling hair, depression, puffy appearance, low blood pressure, low energy, infertility, difficulty losing weight, family history of low thyroid and previously having children (the fetal thyroid can make antibodies

against the mother’s thyroid) are all potential low thyroid symptoms or causes. Replacing natural animal thyroid is a good place to start for many women. Please don’t try Synthroid, it is not bioidentical (like the body makes) and may block our own thyroid hormones. Look up a longer review of this issue on Mercola.com. I have had scores of ladies during my 40 years in practice who have successfully managed their menorrhagia with the thyroid alone. In addition, other therapies such as vitamin K2 injections, bioidentical hormones, herbals, homeopathic preparations and dietary adjustments reduce abnormal bleeding quickly. Natural bioidentical progesterone creams or capsules balance estrogen dominance, which cause

heavier periods and PMS, fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and fibroids. Fat makes estrogen and estrogen makes fat – a vicious circle – so weight loss can help. Many environmental pollutants mimic estrogen. Bisphenol A (plastic water bottles) and other plastics, pesticides and industrial waste such as PCBs activate estrogen receptors. Cleaning up the diet and eating organic foods and pure water is important for getting on top of menorrhagia. Soy products are also estrogenic and are not good foods to eat, unless fermented for several years like they are in Japan. Sugar, cow’s

milk and wheat (gluten) also disrupt the intestinal tract leading to stress and abnormal nutrient absorption. Herbals such as Shepherd’s purse (Thlaspi bursa capsularis pastoris) have long been used for heavy periods. One capsule of cayenne pepper (herbal grade) opened in a cup of warm water can slow down bleeding quickly, as it balances out blood flow in the body. Homeopathic Crocus 6C or stronger is great for a hemorrhage with clots. I depend on the Trillium Combination from Marco Pharma for any acute hemorrhage (50 drops in water followed by 30 to 40 drops five times daily).

There are over 200 homeopathic medicines for menorrhagia, which can be prescribed by your homeopathic, integrative practitioner.2 For more information, call Gerber Medical Clinic at 775-826-1900 or visit gerbermedical.com

HEART DISEASE It’s all about the energy!

Written by Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D. Many people have been told that their heart disease cannot be reversed or healed. They have been lead to believe that they can only stop the problem where it is, but not reverse it. What if that was not necessarily true? It isn’t!

conditions including congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, angina and arrhythmia as well as other cardiac conditions. CoQ10 performs many functions in each cell but its most important function is in cellular energy metabolism. It plays a crucial role in the transport of electrons to the proper place in each cell that results in the energy production that allows all our cells to do what they do to support our life. The third component is called D-Ribose. Research into the biochemistry and physiology of this simple sugar in hearts has been going on for decades. It works in the heart by accelerating energy recovery during and following cardiac ischemia (poor oxygen level). In 1992, Dr. Wolfgang Pliml (Germany) proved the benefit of supplemental ribose in improving exercise tolerance in patients with coronary artery disease.

The key is maximizing the amount of oxygen your heart extracts from the bloodstream by accelerating the rate at which the muscle cells convert nutrients into energy.

The key is It is the maximizing the combination of all three amount of oxygen your of these heart extracts from the supplements that has bloodstream by been shown accelerating the rate at to provide great benefit which the muscle cells to patients convert nutrients recovering from into energy. heart disease.

Dr. Stephen Sinatra, a board certified cardiologist and specialist in an area he calls “Metabolic Cardiology,” has found a way to do this with an energy enhancing nutritional approach. I am not meaning to imply that there is no place for conventional cardiology. There is no question about the essential work cardiologists do every day to save lives from deadly blockages in crucial coronary arteries. What Dr. Sinatra is saying is that a synergistic combination of nutrients can essentially charge up every body cell to function at optimal capacity. The first nutrient in this three-part combination is called L-Carnitine. The principal function of this amino acid is to facilitate the transport of long-chain fatty acids (fats) across the cell membrane into the mitochondria in the cell so they can be burned for energy. In fact, it is the only carrier that can do this and, for that reason, its abundant presence in the cell is an absolute requirement for life. Other crucial functions of carnitine include the metabolism of branch chain amino acids (from protein digestion), ammonia detoxification (a waste product of protein digestion) and removal of lactic acid from tissues. This helps prevent exhaustion and burn out of the energy supply in muscles (especially heart muscle!) during strenuous physical activity. The second nutrient in the combination is called Coenzyme Q 10 or CoQ10, for short. More than 30,000 citations on the Internet alone cite the proven benefits of CoQ10 in treating a wide variety of degenerative diseases, but especially cardiac

16

Despite the large body of available scientific evidence, clinical information and descriptions in mainstream textbooks on cardiology, these nutrients are still widely ignored by the majority of clinical cardiologists, and most of the conventional medical establishment. Emotional Energetic Healing Is Available Now Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

LBERT EINSTEIN SAID, “Everything is energy.” We need to take that statement to heart and realize that energy medicine is very old and also very new. Whether we are using traditional forms like acupuncture, tai chi, reiki or applications such as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), magnetic therapy, vibrational or music therapy, working with the human energetic system to create wellness is a valued practice that produces tangible results.

18

We now know that the field of energy medicine involving energy fields is based on the fundamental idea that all physical objects and psychological processes are expressions of energy. Therefore, all living bodies are believed to be infused with a “subtle energy” or life force. This life force is known by a variety of terms, depending on the culture. In traditional Chinese medicine it’s called “chi,” in the Judeo-Christian tradition it’s called “spirit” and in Ayurvedic medicine it’s represented in the “doshas.” What the ancients recognized, science is now proving.

messengers. When we have a specific emotion, a cascade of peptides is released and influences our body. It’s because of the emotionmodulating peptides that an embarrassing thought can cause blood vessels to dilate and turn your face red. In the same way, the molecules of emotion can mobilize immune cells to destroy an incipient tumor. Techniques like meditation or visualization may also act as forces to put those molecules into action. So, if emotions alter the functioning of the body, how do we experience healing by addressing subconscious

The fact that you can activate your body’s stress response simply by thinking negative thoughts means that you wield tremendous power over your physical state in every moment. Candace Pert, PhD, is one researcher who has significantly contributed to the legitimate study of mind-body medicine. Dr. Pert feels that “most psychologists treat the mind as disembodied, a phenomenon with little or no connection to the physical body. Conversely, most physicians treat the body with no regard to the mind or emotions. But the body and mind are not separate, and we cannot treat one without the other.” In Dr. Pert’s book, Molecules of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine, she explains how a class of proteins called peptides (including endorphins) act as a nervous system, delivering information throughout the body. Her theory is that the surface of each cell is covered with receptors for specific peptides. These freefloating molecules function as

negative emotional patterns that may have been learned through negative experiences in childhood? This is the topic of a cutting-edge documentary on mind-body medicine entitled E-Motion. In the documentary, leaders in the field of energetic medicine explore the connection between our emotions, body and health. Taking into account that the subconscious mind is one thousand times more powerful than the conscious mind, we’re likely to wonder: What actually controls the subconscious mind? The answer is: unresolved emotions. When we have traumatic perceptions buried in our subconscious mind, these

Why you’re not getting answers:

Are you searching for a natural solution...

Part 1 Written by Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

The patient experience: patient becomes “dizzy.” Patient then usually goes to their general practitioner (GP). Two problems here: 1. People have a very difficult time discussing dizziness because there are multiple types of dizziness (versus vertigo) with different symptoms. 2. Your GP is not an expert in dizziness and will not give you a diagnosis of dizziness, most of the time. They will refer you to an audiologist (whose expertise is primarily for vertigo) or a neurologist (who will only diagnose your dizziness if they find something on an MRI or CAT scan – which they usually don’t) and then you will be sent to your cardiologist to make sure nothing has been missed.

OR You go to the ER with severe “dizziness.” They do an EKG to make sure you’re not having a heart attack. If no heart attack is found, you get a CAT scan to make sure you don’t have a bleed, tumor or skull fracture (even if you have no history of trauma!). If all is normal, you’re told that you may have BPPV – the ear rock/crystal dislodgement condition that technically causes vertigo – not dizziness – then they will tell you to follow up with a neurologist, ENT or physical therapist (to perform maneuvers to replace the rock/crystals that probably are not the cause of your dizziness). continued on page 22

DIZZINESS, continued from page 21 For the record, audiologists don’t like dizziness patients. Why? People have a hard time describing it, it’s difficult to assess, the ear is mostly related to vertigo – not dizziness – and there is more financial reward in treating other conditions due to the fact that the field’s profitability is limited by the diagnostic code. So, why the diagnostic dilemma? Unlike vertigo, there’s more to dizziness than the inner ear. How we have “no dizziness” or, to not feel dizzy, you need good coordination of all brain parts involved in creating dizziness. The eyes tell you where you are in space, the “inner ear” tells you where your head is in space, the parietal lobe (back, top part of head) coordinates all sensory and balance input from your joints and muscles, and your cerebellum coordinates all of these areas along with input from the cervical spine (neck) to create a no dizziness zone and good balance. When one of these areas is not functioning correctly, a healthy brain will compensate for the imbalance and you will not be dizzy. Much of the dizziness we will experience is relative to how well or poorly your cerebellum functions. It is your cerebellum and not your inner ear that is the key to dizziness.

diagnosed by the neurologist when a MRI or CAT scan shows something (a tumor for example) on the MRI. The problem is that most of the time there is no tumor – the cerebellum is just not firing correctly (kind of like having one cylinder in a 6 cylinder engine out of sync with the rest). It’s just “out of sync.” When the cerebellum is out of sync, you get poor balance, some types of vertigo, blurred vision, stiff neck or dizziness.

“90 percent of the time these dizziness conditions can be substantially improved or resolved with specifically-targeted brain rehabilitation exercises and correction of the physiologic and biochemical imbalances…”

Thus, the diagnostic dilemma. The cerebellum is not in the realm of diagnostics for the GP, audiologist or physical therapist, and is only

22

There are at least 20 different types and causes of dizziness. Some are pathologies, but most are variations of the brain firing imbalances listed above. A comprehensive neurological examination should be able to target the specific regions of the brain that are involved in that patient’s case. If the cause is pathological, then referrals must be made. But, 90 percent of the time these dizziness conditions can be substantially improved or resolved with specifically-targeted brain rehabilitation exercises and correction of the physiologic and biochemical imbalances (blood sugar imbalances, inflammation, infections, auto immunities, thyroid problems, stress hormones, gut endotoxins) that are perpetuating the chemical weakness in the specific brain region involved (the cerebellum, 85 percent of the time). This is why you are not getting answers in the present “dizziness/ vertigo” model. Next month’s article will discuss the difference between dizziness and vertigo and how they are diagnosed and treated. For more information, call Dr. Rutherford or Dr. Gates at 775-329-4402 or visit PowerHealthRenoNV.com See ad on back page.

references: If you can’t see the cerebellar problem on an MRI, CAT scan or EEG, then how the heck do you find it? By doing a neurological exam. The problem is, most neurologists don’t do comprehensive neurological exams anymore due to time, deference to MRIs (often for legal purposes), poor reimbursements and the fact that the medical model has no solution for the cerebellum and “dizziness.” Meclizine is not a solution. It’s a Band-Aid, and not a good one.

SPOOKY SCARY TRUTHS ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE FRANCHISE FOOD. By Lynn Virgilio, Publisher

Do you know where restaurant chain and franchise food grows? Do you know how this food is harvested, packaged, shipped and stored? Several recent outbreaks of Salmonella, E. coli and hepatitis A bring good reason to take a deeper look into the food safety and handling practices of large chain restaurants. Within the past six years, the increase in foodborne illness outbreaks caused by the mishandling of foodstuffs has occurred at at least three well-known restaurant franchises:

24

1 2 3

Subway restaurants in 28 Illinois counties were linked to 109 confirmed Salmonella illnesses; 2010. Chipotle Mexican Grill was linked to E. coli outbreaks in Minnesota, California, New York, Ohio, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington, Kentucky, Oregon and Delaware. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 55 people were infected in the initial outbreak. The CDC notes, “a common meal item or ingredient served at Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants was a likely source of both outbreaks.” However, the investigation did not identify a specific food or ingredient linked to the outbreak. Most speculate that Australian beef caused the contamination; 2015. Tropical Smoothie Café has been linked to 70 cases of hepatitis A in Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Investigators traced the source of the hepatitis A virus to frozen strawberries imported from Egypt; 2016.

Countries outside of the U.S. may not have the same stringent requirements for harvesting and packaging procedures like many U.S. suppliers. Patagonia Foods, a frozen fruit supplier based out of San Luis Obispo, works in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices and USDA and FDA regulations. In Northern Nevada,

local franchise Keva Juice works with Patagonia Foods to ensure that produce is safe for consumption. Before you head to a restaurant chain or franchise, take a moment to learn about where their food is coming from – you may find some very valuable, and eye-opening, information!

Guilty Comfort Food with a Healthy, Nutritious Twist

Written by Marie-Claire Hermans

Pizza is one of the standard cravings almost everyone has, even after successfully established diet changes. As soon as autumn sets in and the cold becomes tangible, eating raw can continue your healthy habits. A misunderstanding many people have is that eating raw equals “eating cold.” But when you eat raw, you can warm your meals up to 108°F, which is higher than your body

temperature and can be very comforting in winter. With this raw vegan, gluten- and lactosefree pizza you can mimic your favorite Italian take-out meal and even improve the taste of it. Start making a full dehydrator of pizza crusts and store them in your pantry – as animals store their winter supply – so all you need to do is grab a crust and top it off with sauce and vegetables.
