“I Have My Life Back!” I began a terrible journey of ill health in January of 2004. My health had deteriorated to the point where all of my body systems were affected, but my short-term memory, vision, ability to breath and muscle tone were affected most severely. By March, doctors had performed numerous tests including blood work, X-rays, TB test, and a MRI. I was told I had toxic chemical and heavy metal poisoning (my white blood count was elevated 5 times normal), yet was not considered “sick”. I am normally a size 2 and my body had swollen to a size 10. I had no strength and could barely breathe. I lost my job. It was at this point I began seeking alternative forms of medicine and began my journey of healing. I knew I would need to rid my body of the heavy metals and found mineral body wraps, far infrared saunas and music therapy to aid in the process. I began using these modalities to release the heavy metal build up, increase enzymes to assist my adrenal glands in the release of the impurities, and adjusted my pH so my body changed from an acidic to alkaline environment. Within 3 days I was able to breathe easier, I gained strength and lost inches through the release of metabolic waste. I felt as if I had returned to the living—I had my life back! My journey of wellness began in May 2006 and I am sharing my experience, strength and hope with others. I opened Circle of Life Spa for everyone who wants and needs the modalities which helped save my life. I look forward to the opportunity to share my experience with you. -Janet Henshaw

September 2007
PUBLISHERletter Dear Readers & Advertisers, Here it is September already! Most folks are getting back into their fall routines, including back-to-school. We at HB have had a very eventful last month. Healthy Beginnings Magazine was present at the first annual Sustainable Living and Renewable Energy Roundup that was held at Bently’s Ferris Park and Western Nevada College Campus August 10th through the 12th. We attended The Blue/Green “A Sustainable Design Salon” at the Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, NV arranged by Nevada Econet. It is truly wonderful that so many people are finally concerned about going green! Our planet says Thank you. Yippy Skippy! Hopefully, better late than never… September is our favorite gardening month – when we really get to reap the fruits of our labor – abundant basil, tons of tomatoes, copious squash, melon, eggplant and onions! We have even started a worm hotel – a bit late, but a really fun and interesting ecological project all the same. As for personal health, this month you will find articles on low self esteem and how it blocks our ability to achieve our goals; a great book review, “Excitotoxins, the Taste That Kills,” exposing widely used food additives that may cause brain tumors and other serious illnesses. Dr. Grange writes about his insights concerning cancer treatments and natural chemoprevention. Our Family Health department concerns Eczema and Skin Conditions, in the Natural Beauty section you will find oceans of natural, “make-it-yourself” body, hair and skin care products. Also check out “Make an Undo-List” in the Meditation & Reflection department, as well as “What is your Eye Q?” and the “Buzz about Bees.” In Garden for Health you’ll find out about a new “12-Step Program for Getting Your Lawn off Chemicals.” You can also learn some simple green steps to take in “10 Easy Steps to an Eco Home” in our Green Living section.

Our Cover Globe artichokes are large, silvery-green, thistle-like plants with edible flower buds which, when not picked and eaten, open into stunning grapefruit-sized, purple blue flowers. Patience is the operant word in eating artichokes. The edible parts include the fleshy bases of the small globe flower leaves, the inner receptacle or “heart” to which these are attached, the saucer-like base of the globe and the upper stem portion attached to it. Some describe its taste as a rich buttery or nutty flavor, with a hint of celery seed, similar to the cardoon. Truly divine and worth the effort! Artichokes have been associated with sexuality and aphrodisiacs for centuries. England’s King Henry VIII is reputed to have eaten bushels of them. During the middle ages, European women were forbidden to eat artichokes because of its supposed aphrodisiac properties, these being reserved for men In addition to libido enhancement, the artichoke has been used as a diuretic, blood cleanser, liver detoxifier, a treatment for hepatitis and to stimulate appetite. Today its powerful antioxidant phytochemicals cynarin and silymarin continue to be used widely in alternative treatments of liver and gall bladder diseases. Artichokes offer terrific low calorie, no-fat nutrition, 4 grams of protein, 6 grams of fiber, a high level of potassium (425 mg), good magnesium (72 mg) and calcium (54 mg), as well as chromium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc and iron. One large artichoke contains 25% of folic acid RDA, small amounts of niacin, B6, vitamins A and C. So our health tip to you for September is to undertake the practice of mindful patience as you prepare and enjoy eating the seductive artichoke!

GREENbuilding & SUSTAINABILITY
10 Easy Steps toward an
Eco-home From Natural Home magazine, by Judith A. Stock
L
iving a healthy, environmentally conscious lifestyle gets easier every day. Start with these 10 simple principles, and turn your house into a green, energy-efficient, comfortable home.
1. Plenty of Daylight South-facing windows provide natural daylight, and the sun’s rays help keep rooms warm in winter. If you want more light, add insulated windows to the home’s south side, unless you live in the desert or an extremely hot climate, where more windows could present heat problems. Shading windows in summer protects against overheating.
2. Air Circulation Indoor air quality is an essential component of any healthy home. Choose cleaning products without toxic chemicals and paints and wood finishes that are natural and contain few or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Use a whole-house, integrated air-filtration system with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. Use low-toxic adhesives and plastic-free grout when installing tile. Make sure the kitchen range hood vents outside.
high-performance windows are key. “Weather stripping and caulking in existing homes can reduce your energy bill 10 to 25%,” said David Johnston, president of What’s Working, a green building consultancy. “Energy prices will escalate over the next few years; insulation is the least expensive insurance policy you can buy.”
3. Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
5. Indoor-outdoor Connection
[See editor’s note next page.]
An inviting patio can extend your living space to the outdoors. During summer, create shades with a retractable awning, an umbrella or trees. “Look at the gifts and challenges that nature gives you in your own microclimate,” said Carol Venolia, architect and Natural Home columnist. “Working with nature is simple, but we lost touch with it when we became dependent on fossil fuel to heat and cool our homes.”
Light bulbs get a big workout. If you can do one thing to be more energy efficient, replace old incandescents with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). Installing one CFL saves $15 annually, according to the Rocky Mountain Institute, a nonprofit energy research group. Multiply that by the number of lights in your home, and add up the savings. Some people also prefer light emitting diodes (LEDs), which can be more expensive but use very little energy.
4. Energy-conserving Building Envelope Most houses leak air. Holes and gaps in the wall, roof, foundation, doors and windows allow air loss; winter heat loss and summer heat gain. Tight construction, good insulation and
September 2007
6. Water Conservation Low-flow (LF) plumbing fixtures save substantial amounts of water and money. LF toilets use only 1.6 gpf (gallons of water/ flush), whereas older models average 5 gpf. LF showerheads use 2.5 gpm (gallons/minute) or less; conventional models use 5 to 8 gpm. LF faucet aerators cut water usage to as low as 1 gallon/minute.
7. Sustainable Landscaping Rain gardens, ponds, birdbaths and streams are good for the environment, friendly to the animal world, and soothing and relaxing for us. Native and drought-resistant plants require less water and maintenance. Organic gardening, which uses natural fertilizers and pest-control techniques and eschews harsh chemicals, is friendly to both the earth and people.
8. Energy-efficient Appliances Energy- and water-saving appliances let you save money on the electric bill and help the environment. Check out Energy Star labels on kitchen, laundry and bath appliances and fixtures. The Department of Energy will soon update energy-efficiency standards for all appliances, so watch for more efficient products to come onto the market.
9. Renewable Energy Solar, wind, water and geothermal are all renewable forms of energy, but installing solar panels or a wind generator may not be attainable immediately if you have budget constraints. A great right-now solution is to buy wind-generated or other renewable power from your local utility; it may be as simple as marking a little box on your energy bill to sign up. In many areas, it’s not much more expensive than conventional energy. Also take a look at solar water heaters, which can pay for themselves quickly by reducing energy bills. For information on financial incentives for installing renewable-energy systems, check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency Web site at www.DSIREusa.org.
10. Location, Location, Location Living near shopping, recreation and workplace reduces car dependence. “It’s hard to justify a home in the middle of nowhere as a green home,” said Brian Dunbar, executive director of the Institute for the Built Environment at Colorado State University. It matters if you have to get in your car and drive everywhere. [Editor’s note: We are learning that compact fluorescent lights contain a small amount of mercury, which, when the lights break or are disposed of, is released into the atmosphere as mercury vapor. Special recycling or disposal services appear to be needed. We will follow up with additional reliable information about this as it becomes available.]
Pet Food Allergies T
he third most common cause of allergies in cats and dogs is food allergies. These allergies account for about 10% of all allergies and is only preceded by flea bite allergies and atopy (inhalant allergies). According to the Veterinary & Aquatic Services Department, Drs. Foster and Smith, “The entire process of a pet being sensitized to a particular agent in food and the complicated antibody response that occurs in the intestinal tract in pets with food allergies are not very well understood. Despite our lack of understanding of the actual disease process, there are many things that we do know, including the symptoms, how to diagnose food allergies, and also how to treat them.” By feeding pets a lamb and rice diet, many pet owners feel that they will avert pet food allergies, but this couldn’t be further from the truth! Food allergies in animals commonly occur between the ages of 2 to 6 years, but have appeared as early as five months of age and as late as 11 to 12 years. The effect of food allergies is consistent for cats and dogs, male or female, neutered or intact. Coexisting inhalant and/or contact allergies are found in many animals with food allergies. Food allergies should not be confused with food intolerances. Food allergies normally produce symptoms of itching and skin dermatitis connected with canine and feline allergies. Food intolerances do not produce distinctive allergic reactions and normally result in diarrhea or vomiting similar to the response of diarrhea or an upset stomach people have when eat spicy or fried foods. Feeding your pet a diet free from bad ingredients will usually eliminate food intolerances and allergies. To learn more about treating and curing your pets food allergies and intolerances, visit http://homemaderecipesdogfood.blogspot.com/ Stop making your pet suffer by feeding him the wrong food diet and get informed now. The Buzzz About Bees By Linda Vegazo, CNC

immune system and reducing inflammation. Many conditions are said to be helped by propolis, including infections, arthritis, cancer, psoriasis, gum disease, and the common cold.
Bees gather nectar from flowers and carry it back to the hive in a honey sac in their throats. The nectar is “ripened” into honey by the addition of secretions from glands in the bees’ throat, and as most of the water evaporates from the nectar. The bees store the honey in the hive as food for the bees in the colony. Raw unprocessed honey contains small amounts of pollens and many people who eat local honey find they have less allergy symptoms. Honey contains important nutrients: vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. The sugars in honey, glucose and fructose, are compatible with the human body, unlike the disaccharides in table sugar. Honey is also anti-microbial. It inhibits a variety of detrimental bacteria and fungi, especially when used topically for healing and preventing infection.
Royal Jelly, the “super food” that worker bees feed to the Queen Bee, is secreted from glands in the bees’ throats. Queen bees are 50% larger than worker bees and can live for 4-5 years, compared to the 40 day life-span of worker bees. Royal Jelly has been documented to benefit the functioning of many human systems (cardiovascular, digestive, immune, musculoskeletal, respiratory, skin, and metabolism). Bees move pollen from flower to flower, fertilizing or pollinating the plants. Many food producing crops rely on insects and bees for pollination. Without bees, pollination would be so limited that most of these crops and plants would die out.
Last winter U.S. beekeepers began reporting unusual numbers of dying bee colonies; researchers termed it Colony As honeybees make their Collapse Disorder (CCD). ara Finley is thrilled to be back in her hometown. Born and raised here in Reno, Tara left the area after graduating from UNR with a degree in psychology and ventured off to Portland, Oregon. She spent six years at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, an accredited Naturopathic Medical School, where she earned a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine. After finishing her postgraduate program, Tara practiced in Vancouver, Washington for one year, and then decided to move back to Reno. She is excited to be near her family and friends, as they are an important part of her life. She is also one of the few practicing Naturopathic doctors in Reno and the only practitioner who is both a Doctor of Naturopathy and a licensed Oriental Medicine Doctor. Tara has been practicing in Reno for two years now. Her main goal: to provide a truly holistic approach to health care for her patients. “People really get piecemeal medicine,” Tara said. For instance, a person may see one doctor for their male/female health needs, another doctor for their general health and possibly another doctor for something else. She would like to give her patients well-rounded, comprehensive health care. From a Naturopathic perspective, Tara can provide her patient’s with a holistic plan that covers all aspects of the body and health. The plan might start by working on current health issues, including lifestyle changes that will help maintain health and prevent new problems from arising. Tara also offers a Well Child program, an approach to health care that she believes is not utilized enough. People usually wait until a health issue occurs to see a practitioner, rather than taking proactive and preventative measures to ensure the presence of overall health. However, Tara believes that “…it is never too early nor too late to make Health your first priority,” and encourages people to adopt a proactive attitude. Because Tara is a mother, she truly believes in the importance of giving children a good base of health from the very start. Such a program can begin as early as one month from the
Beyond the norm, Tara establishes that the infant is getting the proper nutrients. For instance, Essential Fatty Acids are extremely important in brain development, AND they also help prevent allergies. Many problems occur due to poor digestion, so Tara ensures that the infant maintains good digestion with a diet plan that suits their individual system needs. She also makes sure that the immune system is strong, which will help avoid antibiotic usage in the future. Around nine to 12 months of age, Tara checks babies for iron deficiencies, a somewhat common occurrence in children. This test is especially important for breastfeeding babies. If the mother is iron deficient, the probability that the infant will be iron deficient is extremely high. Note that a regular MD does not normally test iron levels in infants and young children until the child display signs and symptoms of deficiency. Tara prefers to see children on a regular basis. For example, starting visits at one month of age, continuing with follow-ups at five to six months, then again at 12 months and so on. Children still need to have a regular pediatrician, as a Naturopath cannot provide prescriptions for medicine or any of the available vaccines. She does, however provide parents with childhood vaccination articles discussing issues on “both sides of the fence,” Tara said. She believes that the parents should make an informed choice whether or not to vaccinate their children. Once the child reaches the age of three years and older, Tara focuses on diet. Many children consume far too much sugar and have nutrient-deficient diets due to an excess of refined and processed foods. This, of course, accounts for the epidemic in childhood obesity, which also explains the rise in type-2 diabetes among children. Everything orients around the concept of health maintenance. Instead of waiting for symptoms to appear and then giving antibiotics or prescription drugs, nip problems in the bud before they gain a toehold or even better, before they appear at all. Take charge of your health and the health of your children! Tara says that when her patients follow this approach, it truly works. Overall, she states, “my patient’s are really happy and healthy.” What could be better?! Find ad on page 15.

Remove Low Self Esteem
Through Hypnosis Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CHt
S
elf esteem is the key to achieving what you want to accomplish. The belief that you can do it will make the difference between success and failure. That belief depends upon your concept of yourself, which comes from childhood programming, from your experiences growing up, from your ideas of how you measure up against others who are trying to achieve the same things, and from the support you receive from family and friends.
Why is this? Because we’re all doing the best we can (indeed the only thing we can) at any instant with our own particular motivation, awareness and knowledge. What’s that again? I’m always doing the best I can and so is everybody else? Whoa! How can that be? Sometimes I know what I should do but I still engage in the same old behavior. Sure you still do it, because your motivation, awareness or knowledge hasn’t changed. All three don’t have to change, just one.
Even when we have high self esteem in certain areas of our lives, we may get “stuck” in other behaviors or in negative habits of thought. Those places where we become stuck may be an indication of internal emotional blocks or mistaken beliefs. If the emotional block or belief is subconscious, then you won’t be able to identify it. You’ll just keep repeating the same behavior, no matter how hard you try to change.
Let’s take the example of organizing that collection of stuff (some might call it junk) that you see every day in every room including the garage. It’s draining your energy, it’s making you frustrated, you can’t find anything you need and you can barely walk between the piles. You want to get it organized, but it’s just too big a job. You don’t believe you can ever do it.

a serious clean-up effort. You are then safe from the possible disappointment of failing at your dream. But now you’re aware of why you’re keeping yourself from cleaning up that mess. Now you’re empowered and you can decide whether you really want that goal or not. If not, stop thinking and talking about it, stop torturing yourself with it, stop using it as a subconscious excuse to live in a junk pile. If you do still have that dream, or any dream, now you can take action to make it real. You’re empowered! Action leads to accomplishment and accomplishment leads to self-esteem, which leads to more action, which leads to more proud, good feelings, and on and on. An upward spiral is born, and now you’re riding it with joy, enthusiasm, freedom and energy. And only one thing changed…your self awareness, because through hypnosis you became aware of what was blocking you.
Be All You Can Be.
Now here comes the magic. You’re motivated, and you have the knowledge of how to do it, if you could ever get started. In this case the self-awareness isn’t there, so you have no confidence in your ability to get this done. So how do I change my self-awareness? You’ll probably not be able to do it consciously because your conscious mind doesn’t know how. But your subconscious knows, so under hypnosis, you’ll tell exactly why you can’t get started. Ah-ha! It’s because there’s a big goal you always wanted to achieve, a big dream…maybe writing a book…maybe starting that little business in your garage, and if you get that mess cleaned up, you’ll have to go ahead with your dream, your goal. And that’s scary. So your subconscious mind keeps you “safe” by keeping you from attempting
Additional suggestions and directions about your ability, your worthiness, your health, your energy level, your enthusiasm, your creativity and many other positive attributes can be instilled in your subconscious mind through hypnosis – often while you’re discovering what’s blocking you. Sometimes it takes only one session. So do yourself a favor and uncover your inner blocks so you can BE ALL YOU CAN BE. Time’s a-wastin’! Burning Man Leaves No Footprint Behind By Ashley Brune
Burning Man-- They say you’ll never fully understand it until you experience it… August 2007 – For people interested in the environment and ecology, the ‘Disappearing City’ in the Black Rock Desert is generating a special interest. The 2007 theme, ‘The Green Man,’ aims to draw attention to social and environmental responsibility. The ‘Man’ will again be ignited, illuminating the night sky to expose fire-lit faces of fellow Burners. But a new purpose arises in the Black Rock Desert this year, that of hope and awareness, for a truly sustainable future. Creative art is the focus of the week-long Burning Man event, so the Green Theme will be a component in many of the exhibits. The Burning Man website states: “Our goal is as simple as it is profound: create a visually and sensory rich space where breakthrough ideas and proven environmental technologies can be displayed and interacted with against the backdrop of the world’s largest participant-created event. We believe this exposition may well be the only place in the world where such a wide range of technologies and solutions can be displayed in an interactive environment.” Greening and restoring the ‘City’ to its natural state takes a big plan and literally thousands of people. This year a carbon footprint will be taken to calculate the amount of climate changing gases that are released into the air by the construction and the burning Graphic by D.A. (aka Dominic Tinio) of the Man. After, projects will be developed and sponsored to address nature’s balance, such as planting trees or rebuilding neighborhood parks. Burning Man encourages participants to calculate the carbon footprint of their own campsite and make efforts to redress it. To learn more see www.coolingman.net. Thinking green is more than this year’s Burning Man theme. The deeper objective is for participants to take away their environmental experiences and implement them into everyday life. So expect Burning Man to evolve into something even larger and more dynamic than in the past. Merging its rich and sensory art forms with environmental responsibility, this remarkable City will serve a new role helping us to respect and protect our earth, our homes and lives and, perhaps most fragile of all, our future.

• Raise chickens (if your local code allows) to gobble up bugs.
• Introduce beneficial insects. You can usually purchase lady-
bugs, praying mantises and other insects through local garden centers.
• Use a soap-and-water spray. A few drops of dish soap, diluted in water and sprayed on plants, will keep mites and small bugs under control. • For more information on alternative pest control methods,
check the Audubon Guide to Home Pesticides website: www. Audubon.org/bird/pesticides.
7. Invite Nature In. • Install a birdbath or birdhouse. Birds are great pollinators and natural predators of unwanted bugs. • Build a bat house. They love to eat mosquitoes.
10. Water Less. • Mulch! A natural barrier of shredded leaves, straw or bark keeps moisture in.
• Water in the early morning to avoid the rapid evaporation that happens in the heat of the day.
• Water less frequently but deeply. Set a coffee can under the sprinkler; when there’s 1 inch of water in the can, the water has soaked the surrounding soil 6 to 8 inches deep.
• Instead of sprinklers, use a soaker hose that waters plants at the roots to minimize runoff and evaporation.

Break Your Slavery to Nicotine in 2007!
The Great American Smoke-out. Amazing that we don’t understand how to end addiction to nicotine forever. Even though the Journal of the American Medical Association admits the ineffectiveness of current treatment methods– transdermal techniques, gums, inhalers – they mainly separate you from your money but don’t stop your addiction. So what’s the alternative? Nutrition! Smoking robs the body of about 40% of its vitamins; combined with a poor diet the body is so weakened that there is little or no success at quitting. Excellent nutrition gives the body strength to reject the toxicity in cigarettes and lay them down forever. Plan your escape now!

Excitotoxins The Taste That Kills
By Dr. Russell Blaylock Reviewed by June Milligan, M.Ed., CHt
E
xcitotoxins are substances added to foods and beverages that literally stimulate neurons to death, causing brain damage of varying degrees. These can be found in such ingredients as MSG, aspartame (Nutrasweet) and hydrolyzed vegetable protein.
Everyone (who eats food) should read this book, especially parents of small children. Most of us know that MSG is dangerous to our neurological health but most don’t know that foods labeled “No MSG” probably not only contain MSG but also contain other excitotoxins of equal potency. You see “hydrolyzed vegetable protein” as an ingredient in many prepared foods. Those words should say “three excitotoxins plus MSG.” Also, the label designation “spices,” “natural flavorings,” or “flavorings” can contain from 20 to 60 percent MSG.
What if someone were to tell you that a chemical added to food could cause brain damage in your children, and that this chemical could affect how your children’s nervous systems formed during development, so that in later years they may have learning or emotional difficulties? How is the food industry able to get away with continuing What if there was scientific evidence that these chemicals to put dangerous additives in our food? Because there are bilcould damage a critical part of the brain known to control lions of dollars in profits at stake that they aren’t willing to give hormones, so that later in life your child might have endocrine up. So they hire lobbyists to convince Congress that everything problems? is just fine. And they hire their own in-house scientists to do Suppose evidence was presented to you strongly suggesting “experiments” which always show that the additives are safe. that the artificial sweetener in your diet soft drink may cause These findings are rarely “peer reviewed” which means that brain tumors to develop, and that the number of brain tuindependent scienmors reported since tists have no chance the widespread into review the WAY troduction of this the experiment was artificial sweetener done. Those “scihas risen dramatientific findings” are cally? Would that then fed to the popuaffect your decision lar press, so we conto drink these products and especially to allow your children sumers believe them. We say, “After all this was a “scientific to drink them? study.” They also get away with it because we have a governAnd what if it could be demonstrated that all of these types mental agency (the Food and Drug Administration) which does of chemicals (called excitotoxins) could possibly aggravate or almost nothing to protect American consumers any more. Money talks. It’s a corrupt system, and until we get an Alzheimer’s disease? Would you be concerned if you knew administration willing to clean up the FDA, we’re stuck with that these excitotoxin food additives are a particular risk if you what we’ve got. have ever had a stroke, brain injury, brain tumor, seizure, or Even after it was shown by independent scientific studies that have suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes, meningitis these additives cause brain damage and may hasten or worsen or viral encephalitis? a whole host of degenerative diseases, the FDA still refused to

ban them. Independent scientists named these substances “excitotoxins” because they stimulate certain neurons in the brain to death. Only after a brave man, Dr. John Olney, publicized the dangers of adding these toxins to baby food, did Congress hold hearings on these substances and write laws preventing some of them from being included in baby food. However, there are ways the food industry can get around those laws.
(3) Additives that may contain MSG or excitotoxins: Carrageenan, Enzymes, Soy Protein Concentrate, Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate. Self-education and personal involvement in what we feed our families is vital. Our incompetent FDA is a national shame, but we have been carefully programmed by that very agency to believe that they’re the watchdogs of our health. The anti-oxidant vitamins and minerals, as well as magnesium and zinc have all been shown to offer varying degrees of protection, but nothing is as effective as avoiding those brain-destroying toxins altogether.
...how is the food industry able to get away with continuing to put dangerous additives in our food?
For instance, they do not have to include MSG on the label unless the product is 100% MSG. More clearly, if a soup is made of broth, plus some spices, MSG may not be on the label. The broth itself may have a high percentage of MSG, but because broth is an ingredient in the soup, MSG does not have to be listed at all. That is deceptive labeling. The same thing happens with frozen diet foods. Foods often taste bland without fats, so the manufacturers add flavor by adding excitotoxin sweeteners (like Aspartame or NutriSweet) and flavor enhancers, like MSG. What a chemical cocktail! And you may not see any of those names on the label because they disguise them with other words such as “hydrolyzed vegetable protein.”
So what do we do about this? First of all, read the book so you’ll understand the details of what this brave neurosurgeon is talking about. He’s done the autopsies on the brains. He has seen the damage. Secondly, below is a list of additives that contain MSG. Remember that the glutamate manufacturers (who make hundreds of millions of dollars a year from these additives), along with the processed food industries, are always on a quest to disguise MSG added to food. So they may be thinking up new names even as you read this. Here goes: (1) Additives that always contain MSG: Monosodium Glutamate, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Hydrolyzed Protein, Hydrolyzed Plant Protein, Plant Protein Extract, Sodium Caseinate, Calcium Caseinate, Yeast Extract, Textured Protein, Autolyzed Yeast, and Hydrolyzed Oat Flour. (2) Additives that frequently contain MSG: Malt extract, Malt Flavoring, Bouillon, Broth, Stock, Flavoring, Natural Flavoring, Natural Beef or Chicken Flavoring, Seasoning, Spices.

Quiet. Private. Relaxing.
Let’s take a look at what “hydrolyzed vegetable protein” really is. Manufacturers take old or damaged vegetables that cannot be sold and boil them in a vat of acid. After further processing, the result turns out to be a brown sludge which is removed from the top of the vat and allowed to dry. This brown powder is then added to foods as “hydrolyzed vegetable protein.” It is a flavor enhancer, but it is also an excitotoxin, which presents an enormous hazard to our health and to the development and normal functioning of the brain.

SUPPLEMENTS 101
Natural Chemoprevention Dr. Kurt D. Grange, Ph.D., N.D., Nutritional Biophysiologist
C
ancer is the most feared of all diseases. People immediately associate cancer with dying. Unlike other killer diseases, cancer usually causes a slow death involving pain, suffering, mental anguish, and a feeling of hopelessness. In addition, the mental and physical stress it puts on loved ones and caretakers is beyond calculation. What is cancer? You have 76 trillion cells in your body that must constantly under go reproduction if the body is to remain alive and functioning correctly. Some of these cells reproduce every few days while others reproduce after a much longer period. As each old cell reaches the end of its life cycle, it reproduces and is replaced by a fresh young cell. The natural death of the old cell is called apoptosis. The rate of death of cells is controlled by a “biological clock” type of gene called the P53 gene.
for
damage causes the plasma membrane of the cell to break down. When this happens, transportation of nutrients, oxygen, and water into the cell and removal of waste products and toxins out of the cell become compromised. This causes the cell to either starve to death or die in a sea of accumulated toxic waste. Or, if the DNA of the cell is also affected, it can cause the cell to reproduce incorrectly thereby causing a cell mutation.
“Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy.”
We know that most cancers are initiated by the action of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable atoms or molecules with at least one unpaired electron. These unpaired electrons want and need a partner. Consequently, the unstable free radicals, which have the ability to attract electrons from other atoms or molecules, go about swiping electrons from stable atoms. This taking of an electron from another atom means that the free radical is now balanced and is no longer a free radical. But the atom or molecule from which the electron was taken is now damaged, and it becomes a free radical. This sets off a domino type chain reaction of damage within the body. In their reckless search for electrons, free radicals do a lot of structural damage to healthy cells. Cumulative free radical

The mutated cell is now genetically incorrect and, therefore, does not behave as a normal cell. The P53 gene of the cell is affected and the natural biological clock is stopped often eliminating apoptosis (natural cell death). Without apoptosis the mutated cancer cell doesn’t die. In order to sustain its growth a cancer cell steals nutrients from surrounding cells and begins to rapidly reproduce in geometric progression (2, 4, 8, 16, etc.). Over a period of time the cancer cell develops into a cancerous mass or a tumor. Cancerous cells from the mass or tumor can be transported to other tissues or organs where they imbed and begin to grow and reproduce (metastasize).
Cancer
and often cause side effects more severe than the disease. Dr. Alan Levine of the University of California Medical School observes, “Most cancer patients in this country die of chemotherapy.” He also states that “Chemotherapy does not eliminate breast, colon, or lung cancers. This fact has been documented for over a decade...”
Conventional methods treat cancer as a localized disease to be treated in a localized manner by cutting out the tumor, irradiating it, or flooding the body with toxic (and often carcinogenic) drugs in order to destroy the tumor. Natural healing methods consider cancer to be a systemic disease. Emphasis is placed on rebuilding the body’s natural immunity and strengthening its natural ability to destroy cancer cells. Data on cancer (which has been corroborated by the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Cancer Society) found that 80-90 percent of all cancers are produced as a result of lifestyle factors, (smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise), exposure to chemicals, environmental factors, and dietary and nutritional practices.
With natural healing methods, emphasis is placed on rebuilding the body’s natural immunity and strengthening its natural ability to destroy cancer cells.
In recent years the ability of the medical community to diagnose and treat cancer has greatly improved. Unfortunately, however, the vast majority of cancers still lack effective treatments. The choices for conventional treatment involve some form of surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy. These procedures are invasive, treat only the symptoms,
We are surrounded by natural and technologically produced toxins. These environmental poisons are present in the air we breathe, the foods we eat, and the water we drink. In today’s industrial world, we cannot escape them. We are exposed to more toxins in 15 minutes than our greatgrandparents were exposed to during their entire lives. The majority of these
toxins are considered to be cancer-causing carcinogens, and, as unbelievable as it sounds, the most toxic environment to which we are exposed daily is the environment in our own homes. Each of us has contributed to the demise of our own health. In our headlong rush to make our lives easier, safer, faster, more fun, and more convenient, we have changed our lifestyles. And, both accidentally and on purpose, we have also changed our environment. We have created the toxic environment necessary for a variety of old and new disease microbes and degenerative disease conditions, such as cancer, to proliferate and devastate our society.
ing the correct foods and supplements may prevent cancer, boost the immune system and energy levels, and give the body a fighting chance to prevent cancer or heal itself. A healthy diet strengthens the immune system, slows tumor growth, protects against further metastasis, and reduces side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
A healthy diet strengthens the immune system, slows tumor growth, protects against further metastasis, and reduces side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.
Since lifestyle, environmental factors, and nutrition are the most common risk factors for developing cancer, it stands to reason that many of these cancers can be destroyed, substantially reduced, or their development eliminated by reducing or eliminating the risk factors. There are some risk factors like air and water which are difficult to control. However, you have almost total control over some of the other known risk factors such as smoking, alcohol, intake of chemicals and drugs, and diet and nutrition. #

Diet and nutrition appear to be factors in 60 percent of women’s cancers, 40 percent of men’s cancers, and about 75 percent of cardiovascular diseases. Space doesn’t allow for a discourse on diet and what foods to eat to reduce possible cancer development except to say, reduce your intake of fat, red meat, smoked or meats preserved with nitrates, and eliminate from your diet white sugars, white flour products, and soft drinks. #-
cally induced cancer. Low blood levels of antioxidants are associated with an increase in death rates from many types of cancer. One of the most promising areas in cancer prevention involving nutrition is in the area of chemoprevention. Chemoprevention is the concept that natural substances found in whole fresh foods could provide powerful weapons against cancer, and against other chronic ailments as well. Chemoprevention is NOT chemotherapy. Instead of toxic poisons, chemoprevention employs nutraceuticals to develop optimal health and to counteract cancer and other chronic and degenerative diseases.
Studies repeatedly show that there is a substantial reduction in cancer risk in those who eat the necessary amounts of fruits and vegetables. Only nine percent of Americans eat the recommended five daily servings. Research has found that it is the antioxidants in fruits and vegetables that confer additional("EGIN PDF 0protection against free radi-

QUINOA
The Mother of all Grains By Jillana Miller
N
o wonder the Inca regarded quinoa as sacred and referred to it as “chisaya mama” or “mother of all grains!” Quinoa, pronounced keen-wah is a delicious and nutritious grain originating from South America. Unlike most grains, quinoa is a complete protein, meaning that it contains an adequate amount of all 9 essential amino acids, including lysine. It is packed with calcium, B vitamins and iron.
Cooked quinoa is fluffy with a subtle crunch and a slightly nutty flavor. This unique flavor profile yields the opportunity for dishes both light and exotic. Below is an exciting quinoa dish that reflects the flavors of this food’s Incan roots with a contemporary touch. Disfruta!
Cherry Jalapeno Reduction: 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 cup dark sweet cherries (fresh or frozen) 1/2 jalapeño pepper, seeds removed, very finely chopped In a small saucepan heat sugar until it begins to caramelize; add chopped cherries and jalapeño; lower heat to medium and reduce to a thick syrup-like texture.

1 cup quinoa 2 cups water 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 1/4 cloves of garlic 1 can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce 1/4 cup chopped red onion 1/2 cup chopped red, yellow and orange bell peppers 1/4 of a zucchini chopped 1/4 cup fire roasted corn 1 lime 1/4 cup vegetable or chicken stock Fresh cilantro 1 tablespoon soft goat cheese Sea salt and pepper to taste
Preparation: Place quinoa and water in a medium size sauce pan and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 1015 min or until all water is absorbed; cover and set aside. Heat a medium size sauté pan over high heat and coat with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Add desired amount of chopped chipotle peppers, garlic and red onion. Reduce heat to a medium flame and allow garlic and onions to brown slightly; now add the chopped bell peppers, zucchini and fire roasted corn and sauté for about 1 minute. Add quinoa and just enough stock to keep the grains moist. Cook for about 1 1/2 to 2 min. Sprinkle sea salt and fresh ground pepper to bring out all of the flavors. Transfer quinoa to a plate and finish with the juice of a fresh lime, a sprinkle of crumbled goat cheese, a drizzle of the cherry jalapeño reduction and a bit of cilantro.

(a remedy now attributed to its high level of Vitamin K), and to encourage lactation. The leaves of the stinging nettle were applied directly to rheumatic joints to relieve pain, and tincture of nettle used for curing burns. Ancient Egyptians used nettle infusions for relief of arthritis and lumbago, and Hippocrates and his followers listed 61 nettle remedies A hair and scalp tonic (nettle is said to relieve dandruff) can be prepared by simmering young nettles in a quart of water for 2 hours, then straining and bottling the concoction when cold. Nettle juice supposedly stimulates hair growth. You will find shampoos and similar products that contain nettle in natural food stores. Nettle contains vitamins A, C, D, and B complex. Its culinary use was common in pre-modern Europe, in soup and as a vegetable, and to make beer in England. Nettle pudding (made with additional vegetables and rice) is still made in Scotland. Present-day nettle lovers attest to its good flavor. The tops are prepared and eaten as greens. Spring nettles are preferable for this dish, as Autumn leaves are gritty. Potato and nettle soup is said to be delicious, as is nettle pesto. Nettle plants, cut and allowed to wilt (or dry) so they no longer sting, provide fodder for live-stock (this practice began after World War II). Powdered nettle is said to increase egg production in chickens.
N
ettle is the common name for dozens of flowering plants of the genus Urtica, of which the stinging nettle, Urtica Dioica, is the most common. Native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, it was brought to the United States by the English. Lore has it that Roman soldiers introduced nettle to England, as a skin stimulant for limbs gone stiff and numb in the cold, damp British weather. All species of nettle have similar medicinal uses. The boron in nettle protects bones against osteoporosis. Nettle contains natural antihistamines and anti-inflammatory properties which open bronchial and nasal passages, thus relieving hay fever/allergies, and even asthma. Fresh, freeze-dried nettle is said to be especially effective for allergies, but burning and inhaling the dried leaves is also recommended, especially for asthma. The leaves, fresh or dried, make a tea long valued as a blood purifier.
Nettle typically grows near bodies of water. It has small white flowers and is similar in appearance to mint, but nettle leaves are more deeply serrated. Be sure to wear gloves when harvesting the herb, best done in the morning after sunlight has dried the plants. The herbs dock and plantain relieve nettle sting, and experienced nettle harvesters swear by using the juice of the nettle itself, squeezing it directly onto the affected area. To harvest, cut the plants off just above the root, tie them in bunches and spread them to thoroughly aerate. Hang indoors, in a sunny well-ventilated room, or outdoors in partial shade (be sure they do not get damp). When dry, the herb should be packed in air-tight containers. Nettle’s use as a diuretic is controversial; some claim that it encourages excretion of uric acid and relieves bloating caused by PMS. Extracts are used to treat arthritis, anemia, and kidney problems, and are undergoing clinical trials as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Feel better with massage and lymphatic circulation therapies
Nettle has a very long folk medicine history. The fresh leaves were used to stop bleeding after childbirth and other injuries

Aspartame... The Real Story
Written by Annemarie Colbin, C.H.E.S., Ph.D.
S
ugar is bad for you, right? It has calories and makes you fat. Therefore, anything that tastes sweet and doesn’t have calories is preferable, because it won’t make you fat. Right? That is the thinking that supports the widespread use of artificial sweeteners. Millions of people guzzle soft drinks sweetened with aspartame, the compound sold under the trade names Nutrasweet and Equal. This ingredient is found in all kinds of diet foods, in toothpaste, and sprinkled out of small packets into coffee and tea. It is sold worldwide. It is also associated with thousands of reports of adverse effects.
1. Phenylalanine (50%), one of the amino acids needed for the production of neurotransmitters essential to brain function. While this sounds OK, it is not: people with PKU (phenylketonuria) are missing the enzymes to break down this amino acid and may end up with an excess that causes brain damage. For susceptible people, phenylalanine will be neurotoxic and might cause seizures.
Most of the information that follows was taken from the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network Fact Sheet, written by Lendon Smith, MD, former Network Physician at NBC-TV and well-known author and pediatrician.
hyde, a known toxic substance used, among other things, as embalming fluid.
Aspartame (the technical name is L-aspartyl-L-phenylalanylmethyl-ester) is considered to be about 200 times sweeter than sugar. It is virtually calorie free. When ingested and metabolized, it breaks down into three substances:

Aspartic acid (40%), which can cause brain damage in fetuses
3. Methanol (10%), an alcohol with turns into formalde-
Early studies in the 1970’s found that aspartic acid causes holes in the brains of mice. (I find this an interesting bit of information, in the light of current concerns with “spongiform encephalopathy,” or mad cow disease, and Creuzfeld-Jacob disease, in all of which the brain becomes sponge-like with holes in it). Monkeys fed aspartame died or had grand mal seizures; however, these studies were not submitted to the FDA when approval for aspartame was requested. The request was approved by then FDA commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., in 1981, after he overruled the Public Board of Inquiry’s recommendation to ban this artificial sweetener. Two months before quitting the post, Hayes approved the use of aspartame in soft drinks, even though the National Soft Drink Association had warned the FDA that aspartame was breaking down in warm climates. From the early ‘80’s, consumer complaints began pouring into the FDA related to aspartame use. Among the symptoms reported are the following: headaches, nausea, vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, insomnia, numbness and tingling of extremities, blurred vision, blindness, eye problems, memory loss, slurred speech, mild to suicidal depression, personality changes, violent episodes, mood changes, anxiety attacks, hyperactivity, heart arrhythmia, edema or swelling, gastrointestinal disorders, seizures, skin lesions, muscle cramps, joint pains, fatigue, PMS, menstrual irregularities, chest pain and increased appetite. Artificial sweeteners can increase appetite because as the sweet taste hits the mouth, a message is passed on to the body that carbohydrates are coming in; then the pancreas swings into action and sends insulin into the bloodstream. As
there are no actual carbohydrates, the insulin lowers the blood sugar and appetite increases. In this manner, artificial sweeteners can contribute to hypoglycemia. Scientific studies show mixed results; some find no increase effects on hyperactivity with aspartame, others find that individuals with mood disorders do react with headaches or increased number and severity of depressive symptoms. “Anecdotal reports” are simply people telling what happened to them; while the scientific community does not accept these as valid, sensible human beings might at least pay attention. Where there’s smoke there’s fire. In addition to the above symptoms, aspartame use can mimic a number of autoimmune diseases. Betty Martini, founder of Mission Possible, an organization dedicated to spread information about problems with aspartame, found that methanol toxicity causes metabolic acidosis and mimics multiple sclerosis (MS). She lists the following symptoms as “aspartame disease”: fibromyalgia, spasms, shooting pains, joint pains, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, and memory loss. In addition to MS, aspartame may also either mimic or trigger the following illnesses:
To sweeten your food without white sugar and without artificial sweeteners, stick to the real thing: fruit, both fresh and dry, juices, maple syrup, grain malts. Yes, they do have calories like normal food does, but they will not fool and confuse your body, and won’t put you at risk for autoimmune or neurological disorders. If you really like drinking sweet fizzy drinks, here is a simple recipe:
Apple Mint Fizz 1/3 cup unfiltered apple juice 1/3 cup cold mint tea 1/3 cup seltzer water Mix and enjoy at room temperature or over ice, with a slice of lemon if you like. You can make all kinds of variations on this recipe with juices, teas, and seltzer water.
fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Epstein-Barr, post-polio syndrome, lyme disease, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, ADD, Meuniere disease and Alzheimer disease. Fortunately, most of these symptoms are reversible, and disappear once aspartame is discontinued. This noxious substance, so ubiquitous in our commercial food supply, should be recalled by the FDA and retested as a drug. As it is not classified as a drug, the manufacturers are not obligated to monitor its adverse effects! Senator Howard Metzenbaum had written a bill warning pregnant women, infants and children against ingesting aspartame, on the suspicion of its relationship to seizures, changes in brain chemistry, and adverse neurological and behavioral symptoms; as is to be expected, the bill got killed. What I found really interesting is that the US Air Force has formally warned all pilots to refrain from consuming aspartame-sweetened diet drinks, as they found them linked to grand mal seizures, vertigo, heart disease, and suicidal depressions. Aspartame interferes with the production of the calming neurotransmitter serotonin. Isn’t it really interesting that sales of the antidepressant Prozac, which encourages the production of serotonin, have gone through the roof in the last few years? A nutriceutical is a food substance or part of a food that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention of, and/or treatment of, disease. They are naturally occurring compounds found in plants, algae, mocrobials, and other biological sources which support specific bodily health functions. One of the most powerful nutriceutical chemopreventatives for cancer is an extract from red raspberry seeds called Ellagic Acid. Ellagic Acid is a nutriceutical. It contains a naturally occurring phenolic compound that has very strong anti-oxidant properties. It is also a potent anticarcinogen. Ellagic Acid has the ability to inhibit mutations within a cell’s DNA. It is also considered to be a cancer inhibitor which has the ability to cause apoptosis or normal death in cancer cells. In addition, research has found that it has antibacterial and anti-viral properties. Dr. Daniel Nixon of the Hollings Cancer Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina has been working with Ellagic Acid from the red raspberry seed in his cancer studies. Dr. Nixon found that ingesting 40 mg of Ellagic Acid, which is the amount of Ellagic Acid contained in 1 cup of red raspberries (in 2 capsules of RBC’s Immune 360 with Ellagic Acid there are 50 mg of Ellagic Acid), can cause cancer cells to undergo apoptosis (natural cell death). This is important because when cancer cells undergo apoptosis it effectively stops their geometric reproductive progression. The cancer cells die and are not reproduced. In other words, it reinstates the action of the P53 gene. Dr. Nixon also has shown that human cervical cells which are infected with the human papilloma virus (which is considered to be the main cause of cervical cancer) are also killed. Other investigators and researchers, both in the United States and in Europe, found that daily consumption of Ellagic Acid from red raspberries had positive responses in: Periodontal disease • Protection of the liver from toxic materials that result in

tissue damage • Faster wound healing, Radiation induced chromosomal damage • Slowing the spread of the HIV virus in the human body • Slowing the degenerative process of aging • Prevention of neural tube defects • Neurodegenerative diseases• Diabetic retinopathy. Ellagic Acid is a super antioxidant and a potent anti-carcinogen which protects the cells against free radical damage. It is also a very powerful anti-viral and anti-bacterial agent. Ellagic Acid has the ability to inhibit mutations within a cell’s DNA. It is also considered to be a cancer inhibitor which has the ability to cause apoptosis or normal death in many different types of cancer cells. Adding Ellagic Acid and Sango Coral Calcium to the following cancer prevention guidelines is an excellent way to reduce the chance of developing cancer: Maintain a desirable body weight • Eat a varied diet • Include a variety of both vegetables and fruits in the daily diet • Eat more high-fiber foods, such as whole grain cereals, legumes, vegetables and fruits • Cut down on total fat intake, Limit consumption or eliminate alcoholic beverages • Limit consumption of salt-cured, smoked and nitrite-preserved foods • Exercise regularly, at least 30 minutes, three times a week. One hour, four times a week seems to confer the most benefits. There are many options for cancer treatment. Surgical removal of a tumor can be appropriate and necessary. In some types of cancer, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are effective. For many, a combination of conventional treatments and natural therapies could be the best solution. The Healthy Adventurer Biking across Australia, South to North Part 2: It had stopped raining for a while… which changed my outlook a bit. It struck me again as I was leaving Adelaide on my trusty road bike Wilhelm VIII, that cities in Australia do not look much different than they do in the US, except for one important thing -- they are much cleaner! What helps, I imagine, is an array of garbage cans along all the streets. I wonder why we don’t do this? By the time I reached the northern outskirts of Adelaide, the rain resumed in earnest. I had put on my new rain gear some time ago, but I was already wet! How did this happen? My rain gear was supposed to be “water proof” yet breathable. Though my motion had kept me warm, I could not imagine that I had perspired so much! However, the most important thing to me was to keep my luggage dry. I made it a science and an art to travel as lightly as possible; it took me several years to learn how to bike with the less than10 lbs total luggage, which I carry in a little knapsack. This has the advantage that, should I ever wish to interrupt my bike ride in favor of a hike, I simply strap it all onto my back and go. For now, I slipped my luggage into a 13gal plastic garbage bag and tied it to the rack of my bike. That would keep the contents dry. So what do I carry with me in my small bag of tricks? Being a kind person, I will share my secrets with you. I pack a little tent; a light sleeping bag; a small “thermarest” mattress; a spare tire, 2 tubes and a miniature set of tools. For clothes, I bring an extra T-shirt, light sweater, vest, extra underwear and socks. Last, I bring a bag of supplements to assure my continued good health. Incidentally, I have not been sick since 1972! As I told you earlier, my wife and I own Everlasting Health Center in Reno, and I have taken many different products over the years. My belief is that the major causes of disease are nutritional deficiencies, not a lack of drugs. So I take Super Supplemental, a multivitamin/mineral. I also take Men’s Formula to prevent prostatitis; Vitamin B6 to protect against carpal tunnel irritation, Brain-Protex for mental alertness, LBS II to assure regular bowel movements; Activated Charcoal should I have a challenge with diarrhea; and Spirulina for a source of protein and extra energy. I have fared extremely well with this traveling “medicine chest,” in all climates and cultures. Next: Biking into the Australian wilderness!

Conditions
We’ve all heard about eczema. Do we really know what eczema is? And why so many young children are suffering with it?
Definition...
Eczema, or dermatitis as it is sometimes called, is a group of skin conditions that can affect all age groups. The severity of the disease can vary. In mild forms the skin is dry, hot and itchy, while in more severe forms the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding. Although it sometimes look very unpleasant, eczema is not contagious.

Also called atoptic dermatitis, eczema is a very common skin problem among children. It is a condition of dry extrasensitive skin. The word “dermatitis” means inflammation of the skin. “Atopic” refers to diseases that are hereditary, tend to run in families, and often occur together. The condition may appear in infancy, later in childhood, or in adulthood. Once it gets underway, it tends not to go quickly away. The causes of eczema are numerous and depend upon the particular type of eczema that a person has. Atopic eczema is believed to be a hereditary condition, genetically linked. It is proposed that people with atopic eczema are sensitive to allergens in the environment which are harmless to others. In atopy there is an excessive reaction by the immune system producing inflamed, irritated and sore skin. Other types of eczema are caused by irritants such as chemicals and detergents, allergens such as nickel, and yeast
growths. In later years eczema can be caused by a blood circulatory problem in the legs. The causes of certain types of eczema remain to be explained, though links with environmental factors and stress are being explored.
Treatments:
Moisturizing is the most important self-care treatment one can undertake in atopic eczema. The skin is severely dried out by the dermatitis; keeping the area moistened can promote healing and retain the skin’s natural moisture. The use of products that tend to dry out the skin or that remove the natural oils from the skin should be discontinued. The first and primary recommendation is that people suffering from eczema shouldn’t use detergents of any kind unless absolutely necessary. Current medical thought is that people wash too much and that eczema sufferers should use cleansers only when water is not sufficient to remove dirt from skin.
Most recommendations use the terms “detergents” and “soaps” interchangeably and tell eczema sufferers to avoid both. However, detergents and soaps are not the same and are not equally problematic to eczema sufferers. Detergents increase the permeability of skin membranes in a way that soaps and water alone do not. Sodium lauryl sulfate, the most common household detergent, has been shown to increase penetration of the skin by other substances. The use of detergents in recent decades has increased dramatically, while the use of soaps began to decline when detergents were invented, and leveled off to a constant in the 1960’s. Unfortunately there is no one agreed-upon best kind of cleanser for eczema sufferers. Different clinical tests, sponsored by different personal product companies, not surprisingly tout various brands as the most skin friendly --based on specific properties of various products and different underlying assumptions as to what really determines skin friendliness. The terms “hypoallergenic” and “doctor tested” are not regulated and no research has been done to show that products labeled “hypoallergenic” are in fact less problematic than any others.

1) Avoid harsh detergents or drying soaps and use unscented soap. 2) Recommendations how to use soap when one must: • Use soap sparingly. • Avoid using washcloths, sponges, or loofahs. • Use soap only on areas where it is necessary. • Soap up only at the very end of your bath. • Use a fragrance-free barrier type moisturizer before drying off. • Use care when selecting lotion, soap, or fragrance, avoiding suspected allergens. Ask your doctor for recommendations. • Never rub your skin dry, or else your skin’s oil/moisture will be on the towel and not your body. If you have a child or grandchild who suffers with eczema consider the benefits of simply switching to soaps that are chemical free. These soaps are available and taking the time to find and use them for personal care and household cleaning can make a big difference. The Wellspring Within The tides of change have brought some new found passions and taken some dear friends to other places within the last month. In my corner of creation it seems there is more than the normal amount of change happening in terms of career, personal dynamics, and living situations. Two of the most potent and consistent themes running through my life are change and connection to the experience. It seems a challenge during such times to feel connected to the process, as change in its own way creates an unsettled rapport with our lives. So I thought that I’d offer some thoughts in regards to staying connected in times of change. I enjoy a Taoist explanation of change, which defines it eloquently as “gushing life.” Sometimes we’re in the cataracts, the rapids, the eddies, and other times the open waterways that never seem to end. I often joke about this idea of having an “in case of emergency” bottle that one would break in times of need to defuse the emergent difficulties or challenges. The contents would be a list or map that would lead us back to wisdom that would reconnect us to the possibility that exists in our lives. What would that list look like for you? For most of us it would include sage advice like: breathe, speak with a friend, don’t sweat the small stuff, surrender, grin and bear it. Within this road map back to our centered state, there would be behaviors like “hydrate, exercise, eat well, connect with positive people.” Each of us would have a distinctively unique bouquet of reminders, reconnectors, and recreational resources. We can never see around the bend of our experience so it’s a challenge to know what lies ahead. We simply cannot seek answers to questions that we have yet to formulate. The concept of precursor faith has been useful to frame the phenomena of change within a generative and proactive way of seeing things. The people in my life that seem to manifest thriving circumstances within ever-present change tend to retain a sense of optimism, speak their mind on important topics, and allow things to happen in an organic yet supervised way. I encourage you to view yourself as a proactive change agent embarking on a oneof-a-kind adventure. Pema Chodron suggests that we learn to open up to an unknown future in a thrilling rather than threatening way. Slip into Something
Sustainable!
It takes about 1/3 of a pound of pesticide to produce a standard Tshirt, so buying organic cotton clothing can keep a measurable amount of toxins out of the soil and off your skin. What makes that pesticide dose even more disturbing? Most of the cotton plant—minus what gets spun into cloth—ends up in our food supply one way or another. Processed foods, from cookies to tuna fish, often contain cottonseed oil. Beef and dairy cows get fed cotton straw, cottonseed meal, and the waste from cotton gins. But because farmers grow cotton mainly for its fiber, cotton escapes the regulations applied to food crops. Many of the chemicals in the pesticides sprayed on cotton have been linked to cancer, birth defects, endocrine disruption, and even nervous system disorders. Switching over to organic cotton doesn’t mean a total wardrobe makeover. Start small with what you wear closest to home: socks, T-shirts, and underwear. Even though organic lingerie implies self-indulgence, buying a fetching little number can provide a good deal more than retail therapy—it can be a great chance to do your body (and the planet) some good. And you can do it in style. No need to settle for frumpy, basic unbleached briefs and bras if you want to wear eco-friendly underwear. The same revolution that brought organic cotton clothing to high-end retailers such as Patagonia and American Apparel also brings us healthy lingerie that looks cute, playful, and—gasp!—even sexy. Choosing to buy organic cotton also offers a way to “wear” your talk: The proof of your eco-ethics lies about as close to home as you can get. Who knew that the right bare necessities could have such an impact? newsletter@alternativemedicine.com AltMed HealthBeat, April 12, 2007
Eating More Flavonoids...
Extends Lifespan
& Reduces Heart Disease
Newstarget -- Thursday, July 19, 2007 LETTER FROM MIKE ADAMS: Dear Readers, The FDA and other pushers of pharmaceuticals have been busy recently trying to discredit the healing power of natural foods. They’ve attacked lycopene, vitamin C and even the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. The mainstream media is now (ignorantly) reporting that breast cancer risk isn’t affected by food, so you might as well just eat all the junk food you want. Amazing advice from so-called health experts, huh? (The FDA actually believes nutrition has almost no role in human health...) Amid all that distorted information about nutrition and health, we’re working to bring you honest information about the healing power of natural foods. Today we have new research on the extraordinary health benefits of flavonoids, which are phytonutrients found in many foods (including chocolate!). And please, don’t believe the propaganda by the FDA and medical journals who are trying to discredit the power of nutrition. They’re only interested in promoting drugs and conventional therapies. They view healthy foods as their competition! The answer to lifelong health is found in nature, not synthetic chemicals. Mike Adams Flavonoids – found in apples, strawberries, bran and even chocolate – can reduce cardiovascular disease and coronary heart disease, according to new research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers examined data relating to more than 34,000 women free of cardiovascular disease (CVD) at the beginning of the Iowa Women’s Health Study, which took place between 1986 and 2002. Over a 16-year period, CVD, as well as coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and total mortality were measured. Intake of total flavonoids was also monitored, and divided into seven subclasses -- including anthocyanins found in blueberries, raspberries and red wine; flavanones from citrus fruits; and flavones, which are found in parsley and celery. The women whose diets contained high amounts of anthocyanins – which give blueberries and red grapes their color and have also proven to be powerful antioxidant sources
– were less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease, or from any other cause than those whose diet included little or no anthocyanins. Flavanone intake was linked to lower risk of death due to coronary heart disease; flavone intake was associated with lower risk of death for all reasons. The researchers also looked at the effects of specific foods. For protection against death from cardiovascular disease, consuming bran, apples, pears, strawberries, red wine and chocolate proved effective. Eating apples, pears and grapefruit protected women against death from coronary heart disease. “Results from this study suggest that the intake of certain subclasses of flavonoids may be associated with lower coronary heart disease and total cardiovascular disease mortality in postmenopausal women,” wrote the researchers. “Furthermore, consumption of some foods that are high in flavonoid content…may have similar associations.” Food richest in flavonoids include: apples, apricots, blueberries, pears, raspberries, strawberries, black beans, cabbage, onions, parsley, pinto beans and tomatoes. “Overwhelming scientific evidence points to the fact that consuming a plant-based diet, rich in phytonutrients, extends lifespan and protects the body and mind from degenerative disease,” explained Mike Adams, author of The 7 Laws of Nutrition. “Plants offer powerful medicine for preventing and even reversing disease. As consumers, all we need to do is consume these foods and superfoods on a regular basis. Our bodies automatically know what to do with these medicinal nutrients.”

* In human autopsy studies, it has been found that there is a direct correlation between the amount of mercury found in the brain and the number and surfaces of mercury fillings in teeth. * Mercury causes normal intestinal micro flora to become mercury resistant and antibiotic resistant. In the intestinal tract, mercury-resistant bacteria cause mercury to be converted back into vapor and then recycled back into the body. Antibiotic resistance is becoming a major medical concern. * Recent scientific research has shown high levels of mercury in the brains of individuals who died from Alzheimer’s disease. Other research demonstrates mercury can cause pathological effects in the brain similar to those seen in Lou Gehrig’s disease. Laboratory studies of spinal fluid from Alzheimer’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease patients have confirmed that mercury inhibits key brain detoxification of enzyme systems.
A Brief History of Mercury Fillings In the early 1800s, French dentists were the first to discover that mixing silver with mercury would allow the amalgams to bond at room temperature. This practice was introduced to American dentists in the 1830s and was widely denounced due to the associated dangers of mercury exposure. In 1840, the American Society of Dental Surgeons (ASDS) formed, requiring its members to sign pledges promising not to use amalgams. This led to much strife amongst the members, culminating in the suspension of 11 dentists in New York when the ASDS found them guilty of amalgam use. By the mid 1850s, the ASDS disbanded as a result of the internal debate. In 1859, the American Dental Association was formed and did not take a stand on the amalgam issue. Today, the ADA states
Mercury & Biological Toxicity that amalgams are safe and do not present a health threat, despite the fact that, in 1989, the Environmental Protection Agency declared amalgams a hazardous substance. The debate rages on today.
Removing Mercury Fillings? If mercury is so dangerous, shouldn’t everyone run out and have their dental fillings removed? The answer is a great big “NO!” The process of removing amalgams can generate mercury vapor and particulates many times greater than leaving them alone. Before making a decision to have your fillings removed, have your physician screen your body with a simple urine test to measure the level of toxic heavy metals in your body. If it is determined that your levels are high, it is recommended that you consult with a biological dentist who is knowledgeable in safe amalgam removal.
Chelation Therapy as a Treatment Option You should be aware of the fact that there are alternative techniques to treat metal toxicity problems, such as chelation therapy. In most instances, the general population knows nothing about such treatments because the traditional medical establishment isn’t aware of its existence and/or such knowledge has been suppressed over the years by various powerful organizations. Chelation was first used in the 1940s by the U.S. Navy to treat lead poisoning and was subsequently approved by the FDA as a safe method of treating heavy metal toxicity. Chelation therapy is a medical treatment that improves metabolic and circulatory function by removing toxic metals and abnormally located nutritional metallic ions (such as iron) from the body. This is accomplished by administering an amino acid, ethylene-di-
amine-tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), by either an oral or intravenous infusion.
FEELING GOOD
When a molecule of EDTA travels through the blood stream, it grabs on to the heavy metal particles, binding tightly and pulling them out of the membrane or body tissue in which they are embedded. Since EDTA is an artificial amino acid, the body regards it as a foreign substance and delivers it to the kidneys to be excreted in the urine.
never felt so good!
Physicians familiar with the administration of chelation therapy treatment alternatives can thoughtfully review the benefits of undergoing such therapeutic treatments with their patients.

American Dental Association (ADA) position on use of amalgam Overview: (April 2007) Dental amalgam is considered a safe, affordable and durable material that has been used to restore the teeth of more than 100 million Americans. It contains a mixture of metals such as silver, copper and tin, in addition to mercury, which chemically binds these components into a hard, stable and safe substance. Dental amalgam has been studied and reviewed extensively, and has established a record of safety and effectiveness. Depending on treatment needs, it is one material available to dentists and patients when considering restorative options. http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/topics/ amalgam.asp

Improve Your
Eye-Q:
Practical Pearls for
Visual Health The recall of contact lens solutions & what you can do about it Written by Cheryl Adlington
I
t used to be unheard of to wear contact lenses overnight, and one certainly would expect to spend at least 10-15 minutes caring for their contacts each evening in the “old days” of contact lens wear. These early cleaning solutions were excellent at killing bacteria and other pathogens, but most were toxic if accidentally introduced into the eye. The hassle factor of contact lens wear prevented some people from choosing contacts as an option, and some who did chose contacts and shunned the care had serious consequences to their eyes as a result. The contact lens companies took these complications very seriously, and began to research and develop products that would be easier to use, to capture better compliance in the contact lens wearing public. As a result, lens solutions have evolved into solutions that require nothing more than dropping the contact lens into the solution to soak for a few hours, then using the same solution to rinse the lens and lubricate it for insertion directly into the eye. When the care of contact lenses becomes this easy, the perception is that the care is not as important as it would be if there was a longer, more involved process. Some contact lens wearers substitute “whatever is on sale”, or “saline, because it’s cheaper”, or even water for the products recommended by their doctors, not realizing that the recommended products have specific ingredients that kill harmful pathogens, when used properly.

September 2007
Questions arise about the effectiveness of a care system that is safe to use in the eye. If it is safe in the eye, how can it possibly kill the bacteria and pathogens effectively? Have we gotten so concerned about making contact lens care easy that we have sacrificed the health of our eyes? These questions are being seriously studied, in part, because of the recent scare in which some care systems have been implicated in increased corneal pathology associated with a specific fungus. Bausch and Lomb voluntarily recalled their ReNu MoistureLoc® products from the market when suspicion was cast on these products in a recent fungal keratitis outbreak, caused by Fusarium fungus. It is rare, but causes a serious enough eye infection that some have needed corneal transplants to preserve their vision. Advanced Medical Optics® recalled Complete® Moisture Plus™ and Active Packs, due to several incidences of acanthamoeba keratitis linked to their products. Acanthamoeba also attacks the cornea, and is sight threatening. The solutions are not the only culprits, as microbes are found in water, can be air borne, and can enter through our fingers or even wash cloths. Contact lens wearers are at an increased risk of complications from the introduction of these microbes because the contact lens can trap them between the eye and the lens. Also, lenses can cause the eyes to dry or experience small scratches, thus becoming more vulnerable to infection. The healthy, moist cornea is highly resistant to these microbes.
There are several web sites that address the specifics of what contact lens wearers can to to protect themselves. These include: www.WebMD.com, www.MedicineNet.com and www.fda.gov.

1. Always wash your hands prior to handling your contact lenses.
2. Discontinue use of the above two named products if
you have any left.
3. Follow your eye care professional’s advice to the letter. 4. Occasionally clean or replace your contact lens case. 5. The new thinking is to apply a drop or two of solution
to the contact lens, in the palm of your hand and rub the debris off your contact lens prior to soaking it, even when using the “no-rub” solutions.
6. Please don’t substitute saline or water for contact lens
solution. It has also been suggested that you do not take a shower with your contact lenses in, due to water borne microbes that can enter the eyes and be trapped between the cornea and the contact lens.

7. Do not “top off” your contact lens solutions in your case, but replace it with fresh solution each time.
8. Read the package insert that comes with your care sys-
tem, and seek the advice of your eye-care professional with any questions you have.
Remember that contact lenses are an extra layer on your eye, that hinders oxygen to your eye, and as they age they gain proteins and deposits that can be attractive to bacteria. The goal is to kill the bacteria and get rid of the deposits in the easiest manner, while keeping the care system simple enough that it is done by everyone. This is the new challenge, in a world where contact lenses are often thought of as a cosmetic choice rather than a medical choice. It’s comforting to know that by heeding a few simple precautions, as listed above and on the web sites previously mentioned, we can take control of our eye health and minimize our risk. Can the essence of

and emotional states. The Greek philosopher Hippocrates once declared, “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and massage everyday.” Essential oils were used in healing practices around the world until the 16th century. Essential oils that were once considered more valuable than gold were relegated to use in fragrances and natural remedies.
The Egyptians were the first to use aromatic herbs for medicinal purposes. In addition to using the herbs and their oils for religious practices, as cosmetics and for embalming, the Egyptians found that certain herbs helped them treat mental disorders. The Greeks also used herbs to alter their physical, mental
Not until the early 1900’s was the term “aromatherapie” coined by French Biochemist, Renee-Maurice Gattefosse. After burning himself during an experiment in his perfume laboratory, he plunged his arm into a vat of cold lavender oil, relieving his pain, and limited the scarring from the burn. This was the birth of aromatherapy as we know it today. The study of aromatherapy and its benefits continue. Essential oils has been found to have localized action with very different effects. For example, lavender, thyme and aspic stimulate the central nervous system, while cinnamon, cloves and rosemary are used to treat the intestines. Aromatherapy oils are used for many purposes and have become a major part of holistic medicine. A massage aromatherapist will use the oils to relieve clients’ tension, while calming muscles and nerves. Through the action of massage, the oils penetrate the skin and target the cells. Combinations of the different oils are custom designed for individual treatment. Essential oils are also used to scent and create the ambiance of a room. When inhaled, the oils are absorbed by the body and promote healing and a sense of wellbeing. A reed diffuser is a method of distributing the essential oils in any space. It is a subtle way to enjoy a gentle, continuous release of aromatherapy benefits. Simply place the reed diffuser (a bottle of aromatherapy oils with bamboo porous reeds) in any space you like, and enjoy the benefits daily. T
he sea is one of nature’s most abundant sources of nutrients, powerful minerals and vital plant life. Since the beginning of time, humans have used these gifts in every imaginable way. Today seaweed, sea salt and other marine products such as marine lipids, are key ingredients in literally thousands of health and beauty applications, from simple salt scrubs to exotic cosmetic products, to nutrientpacked superfoods. But you don’t have to be an herbalist or pay big prices to explore these wonderful treatments. Below are several fun, natural and revitalizing health/beauty regimes you can make at home. None require more than 3 ingredients. Enjoy! Battling Blemishes: Sea salt has purifying properties that help reduce irritation and redness that accompany blemishes at any age. • To make a skin soothing solution, mash, blend or process 1/2 medium turnip, preferably organic, until smooth; mix in 1 tablespoon sea salt. Apply to affected areas of face/body and leave on 10-15 min. Rinse with tepid water. Exfoliate Away Dry Skin: Reveal softer, younger looking skin with this mixture that combines the exfoliating action of coarse sea salts with the conditioning of olive or other essential oil. • Mix 2-3 tablespoons of sea salt with enough of your favorite essential oil to make a paste. Massage into skin with a damp washcloth. Rinse with warm water. Nourish Your Hair: Sea kelp is a natural source of collagen, protein and minerals that add shine to hair while conditioning it to silky softness. • Boil 1 cup water and pour it over 2 strips of dried kombu (kelp available at Asian markets and health food stores). Sit for 30 minutes until softened. Strain water into a pitcher and pour over hair. Massage through and leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. Nourish Your Complexion: Tone and stimulate your face with a seaweed treatment. • Fill a square of cheesecloth with 1 tablespoon powdered sea weed (available at Asian markets and health food stores). Tie ends to make a sachet. Moisten face and neck with warm water; gently scrub away surface debris with the sachet, while stimulating your circulation. Rinse with tepid water and pat dry. Tone and Tighten: Combine powdered seaweed with bentonite or other powdered clay to create a nourishing, toning mask.
• Mix 1 tablespoon seaweed with 2 tablespoons clay and 3 tablespoons water. Smooth over face and allow to dry thoroughly. Rinse off with tepid water. Cellulite: Seaweed draws out excess water from cells, minimizing the appearance of cellulite. • Soak sheets of dried seaweed (NOT toasted) in warm water until soft. Wrap in strips around thighs or upper arms, then wrap seaweed in cellophane. Leave on for 20 minutes. Remove and rinse skin with cool water. Bathe Away Tension: Sea salts soothe your body and mind as they revive dull, tired looking skin. • Add 4 cups coarse sea salt to your bath water. Soak for 10 minutes and follow with a cool rinse. Try bathing with seaweed (half kelp, half dulse) as well for a more moisturizing effect. Work from the inside out: Eat and supplement using these gifts from the sea. • Most everyone knows that eating cold water fish like trout, salmon, tuna, mackerel and herring, is good for us; but did you know that salmon also contains high levels of calcium, good not only for bones, but also fingernails and hair? And that oysters are high in zinc helping us to regenerate the cells of our skin? • Consider including more seaweed in your diet – try healthy seasonings (gomasio), use a strip of kombu in a pot of beans; it also keeps food from sticking to the bottom of your pot; crumble nori into quick bread recipes. There are lots of ways to sneak seaweed into our everyday foods and it is sooooo good for you! Your body will be glad you did! We will do our best to include important updates that relate to articles we have published previously in HB. In this regard, the UC-Davis/UM-St Paul article abstracted below is an important study on a controversial topic and we urge you to read it.] J. Agric. Food Chem., 55 (15), 6154 -6159, 2007. Ten-Year Comparison of the Influence of Organic and Conventional Crop Management Practices on the Content of Flavonoids in Tomatoes Alyson E. Mitchell,Yun-Jeong Hong, Eunmi Koh, Diane M. Barrett, D. E. Bryant, R. Ford Denison and Stephen Kaffka Department of Food Science and Technology and Department of Plant Sciences, One Shields Avenue, University of California-Davis, Davis, California 95616, and Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota 55108
Abstract: Understanding how environment, crop management, and other factors, particularly soil fertility, influence the composition and quality of food crops is necessary for the production of highquality nutritious foods. The flavonoid aglycones quercetin and kaempferol were measured in dried tomato samples (Lycopersicon esculentum L. cv. Halley 3155) that had been archived over the
period from 1994 to 2004 from the Long-Term Research on Agricultural Systems project (LTRAS) at the University of California-Davis, which began in 1993. Conventional and organic processing tomato production systems are part of the set of systems compared at LTRAS. Comparisons of analyses of archived samples from conventional and organic production systems demonstrated statistically higher levels (P < 0.05) of quercetin and kaempferol aglycones in organic tomatoes. Tenyear mean levels of quercetin and kaempferol in organic tomatoes [115.5 and 63.3 mg g-1 of dry matter (DM)] were 79 and 97% higher than those in conventional tomatoes (64.6 and 32.06 mg g-1 of DM), respectively. The levels of flavonoids increased over time in samples from organic treatments, whereas the levels of flavonoids did not vary significantly in conventional treatments. This increase corresponds not only with increasing amounts of soil organic matter accumulating in organic plots but also with reduced manure application rates once soils in the organic systems had reached equilibrium levels of organic matter. Well-quantified changes in tomato nutrients over years in organic farming systems have not been reported previously. What is Royal Jelly?
KIDScorner Brought to you by Ariana Purcell, 9 yrs. old
Snack Time! Healthy & Delicious... •
Ants on a Log •
Here’s what you need: • A bunch of celery • 1 container of peanut butter • 1 cup of raisins • Knife • Plate
O
ne of nature’s best kept secrets, Royal Jelly is the exclusive food of the queen bee and it accounts for her incredible size and longevity. The queen outlives the worker by a factor of 40 to 1. Royal Jelly cannot be reproduced in a laboratory and there is no man-made element that comes close to its powerful regeneration properties. It contains a rich treasure chest of proteins, carbohydrates, essential lipids, fatty acids, and vitamins. The power of Royal Jelly is well documented. It was called “youth tonic” by the ancient Mayans and “the sweet juice of life” by the Romans. Today there is preliminary evidence that it may have some cholestorol-lowering effects, as well as immunomodulatory, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing and antibiotic effects. Royal Jelly is used in many products from vitamin supplements to luxurious skin care products. It has also been used to accelerate healing of burns since it can penetrate 3 layers into the skin. Now at Harvard and Brandeis Universities, Dr. Pepperberg’s famous 30+ year work with Alex, the bird she selected that day, showed the intelligence level of a parrot to be equal to that of a 4 to 6 year-old child. And some live to be 100 years old… When considering a parrot as a companion many people are enchanted by the stunning colors and the idea of their bird talking to them. However, such an intelligent, self-aware, avian individual requires very special care. The World Parrot Trust, an international organization dedicated to helping parrots survive in the wild and in our homes, offers guidelines describing a parrot’s basic needs. Written by Taylor Donovan
t no time in human experience are there more vital developments in the female body than in the periods before, during, and after pregnancy. Being in an optimal “state of being” will allow the mother-to-be the best opportunity for a more comfortable pregnancy and give her new baby the essential ingredients required for an outstanding development that will set the foundation for a life of health.
When caring for a pregnant woman, the Chiropractor has two main objectives: Structural and Neurological Integrity. The Structural component consists of symmetrical alignment (or as close to it as possible) and proper movement. The Neurological component consists of a free flow of nerve impulses to all cells of the body without interference. Optimal Structural and Neurological integrity leads to an increase in overall physiological and psychological health, which allows for an optimal internal environment for the mother, the growing baby, and the supportive partner.
Creating a more flexible body, especially in the region of the lumbar spine and pelvis, is crucial for a successful pregnancy. Ideally, the mother-to-be’s spine should be subluxation-free before conception. Subluxation is a term used to describe what happens when a spinal bone, or bones, misaligns and causes pressure or irritation to be placed on the nerve exiting between the vertebra. This is detrimental to one’s health process because the nervous system is the information super highway that allows for all communication and development to happen. A useful analogy is to think of what a dam does to a river and all the changes

it makes to its ecology. With a flexible but stabilized spine the mother-to-be is able to handle the increase in 20-30 lbs that she will be carrying. This is a matter of gravity and biomechanics. As the pregnancy advances, breast tissue becomes larger as does the size of the belly. To help ease the changes in the biomechanics, i.e., weight distribution, specific chiropractic adjustments to the distorted and misaligned spine will help the mother-to-be adapt to the increased stress on her spine and body. By staying out of pain from jammed and compressed joints, emotional volatility and fatigue are reduced. Pre/peri natal yoga classes, support groups, and working with a childbirth practitioner like a doula or midwife are great complements to chiropractic care during this life phase. Another vitally important reason for chiropractic care is in-utero constraints. After the 7th month, throughout the final trimester, any position of the fetus other than a vertical head down position is considered to create constraint to the fetus and make it especially uncomfortable for the mother! The biomechanical constraints on the fetus and the potential for a more challenging labor, or even the need for heroic surgical procedures, all point toward chiropractic care as being not just helpful, but essential. Usually the lumbar spine, pubis and sacroiliac joints are the first to succumb to increased weight demands and associated ligament
laxity from the hormone “relaxin.” As the abdominal region extends forward, the center of gravity changes and the mother-to-be must make adaptive changes to her posture. By making sure the pelvis and sacrum are moving freely the mother-to-be will have more freedom to move. By having more freedom she is able to move more often and exercise based on her ability and comfort level. During this phase the chiropractic methods tend to incorporate more sacro-occipital and energy release techniques, particularly in the lumbar spine. Neurologically, the body just works better with a healthy nerve supply. That means removing any irritation to the nervous system. Irritation can be in the form of traumas, toxins, and negative or stressful thinking. When enough stress builds up the spine will distort much like a fuse in a circuit breaker box gets tripped when too much current is running through it. This is one of the main reasons why an individual will have a “spot” in their body that consistently gets painful when life gets stressful. With a healthy nerve flow to all the tissues of the body, the mother gives herself the greatest opportunity for wellness and vitality. When vitality exists, the environment for conception is ripe much like a garden’s growing potential exists in the health of its soil. The miracle that is the birthing process is challenging. Chiropractic care, sound nutrition, relationship support, and the support of other skilled childbirth and bodywork practitioners can create an experience that is empowering for the mother-to-be. Specific chiropractic adjustments allow the bones to move, the muscles to relax, and the nerve impulses to flow without interference. To Wax...
or not to Wax. By Karen Tenaglio
L
et’s be honest - waxing doesn’t tickle, but some discomfort is worth it for skin that stays smooth for 2-3 weeks, does not leave tiny cuts on your skin, or scrape your epidermis. Waxing lifts the hair out with the root. Shaving is more like cutting down a tree– it leaves a stump that is coarse and rough. And, since each pore contains several hair follicles, when you wax, removing the hair with the root, the next hair grows back with a soft pointed end, not a stump. It feels softer and grows back slower. Over time when you wax, your hair will become sparser. In many cases it will not grow back once all the hair has been removed. Bikini waxing isn’t just for beach bunnies; women of all ages are getting Bikini and Brazilian waxes. You will feel better in a swimsuit and raise your partner’s heart rate! Bikini Wax: Perfect for women new to waxing, this service cleans up the hairline on sides and top. French Wax: Similar to the Bikini - a half-inch more is removed from sides and top. Brazilian Wax: Usually all hair is removed (front & back); some women leave a thin landing strip down the front. Full Brazilian Wax: Similar to the Brazilian but without the landing strip. Full Leg and Underarm Waxing: All I have to say is, goodbye razor! Arms, eyebrows, lip, chin, face, chest, back and neck (its all good). Typically three kinds of waxes are used: sugar, honey and azulene, a soothing, chamomile flower based wax, considered by many to be top of the line. If you have never tried waxing you should at least once; you may never want to touch a razor again! And there is only one way to find out! osquitoes are a telltale sign that summer’s in full swing. More than a mere annoyance, mosquitoes also can pose serious health risks that reach beyond itchy skin irritation. West Nile Virus is an illness transmitted by mosquitoes that can cause encephalitis (swelling of the brain), a condition that may lead to permanent disability or even death. In 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 4,269 cases of West Nile in the United States, and 177 fatalities. Humans

Recipes For Natural Mosquito Repellent & Insecticides, Safe For Kids There are many natural and effective alternatives to poisonous bug sprays, some you may find around your house, others you can make yourself. Remember that natural substances need to be applied much more frequently, so apply as needed; also, there may be variation in effectiveness that is due to your own body chemistry, oils, what you have eaten that day, and the products you use. The most common and most effective natural insect repellents are essential-oil based. Test your skin for sensitivity to all ingredients of any kind. One recipe calls for: • 20 drops Eucalyptus oil • 20 drops Cedarwood oil • 10 drops Tea Tree oil • 10 drops Geranium oil • 2 oz of carrier oil, such as jojoba Experiment with the exact amounts of each oil. Mix together in a 4 oz container and apply to skin as needed. Be careful to avoid the eye area; do not use on an open scratch or broken skin, and use only externally. Other natural repellents reported to work include: • Citronella • Lavender oil (dabbed on pulse area as in aromatherapy) • Clove oil (may cause skin irritation) • Peppermint oil • Castor oil • Crushed lemon balm leaves, rubbed on your skin (you can grow it). Combine any one of the essential oils at a 1:10 ratio with rubbing alcohol, witch hazel or olive oil. Shake well before each use. • Clear, real (expensive) vanilla (1:1 ratio mixed with water) • Vicks vapo-rub or similar product (also reported to work against ticks) • Mint family– catmint, spearmint, pennyroyal Cover mint with apple cider vinegar for 2 weeks, shaking twice a day; strain; rub or spray on as needed.

Breathing
For Improved
Vitality By Carolyn Wiens
H
ow often during the day do you catch yourself holding your breath or clenching your jaw and squeezing your eyes tighter? When you hold tension in your body, there is a natural tendency to only breathe from the chest? Why is good breathing technique important? Breathing well helps you re-calibrate your physical and emotional wellbeing. It brings a sense of calm, of tranquility and peacefulness to your body and your soul. It helps “slow down” the pace of your world. This is significant in maintaining emotional balance. Breathing deeply has physiological effects as well. It’s a tremendously easy way to reduce your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and release tension from your neck, shoulders, back and abdomen. I have a favorite saying “Oxygen In, Energy Up”.
How can you best improve your breathing patterns?
Do this “Self Check-in” then make some changes! • Locate your breath. Notice if it’s in the upper part or lower part of your body. Does your breath move deeply into your body or is it shallow? • How frequently do you breathe? What’s the tempo, the pace? (Twelve-fourteen breaths per minute are considered an average rate.) • What is the quality of your breath? Is it free flowing, thick, dense, do you feel trapped in your chest? Can you get as deep as you want to? Is your breath smooth or ragged?
Alternate Nostril Breathing: This is a great technique to bring balance to the right and left hemispheres of the brain. It also soothes and calms the nerves, a wonderful thing when you’re stressed! Sit in a comfortable position. Using the right hand, fold the index and third fingers inwards to touch the palm near the base of the thumb. Let the little finger rest gently against the side of the ring finger. The cycle for breathing is as follows:
1. Close the left nostril with the ring finger, and inhale completely through the right nostril.
2. Close the right nostril using your thumb, and release the ring finger off the left nostril and exhale through the left nostril. 3. Inhale through the left nostril. 4. Close the left nostril with your ring finger, and release the
thumb off the right nostril and exhale through the right nostril. Repeat this cycle at least 5 times. This is a great technique for you when you’re stressed, and even to teach children to use before bedtime, or before a big test at school.
Take the time to notice and feel the effects within your body before you move onto your next activity or conversation. Remember, the choices you make today regarding your nutritional intake, your activity level and the amount of rest, relaxation and hydration you get will all have an impact on your state of health 5 or 10 years down the road. Take good care of yourself, and those you love. Strive for balance and let your light shine! T’ai Chi Boosts Immune System Against Shingles in Older Adults April 6, 2007 (HealthDay News)
T
’ai chi, an exercise that features slow martial arts-like movements and meditation, significantly improves the ability of older adults’ immune systems to fight the virus –varicella zoster– that causes shingles, a new study says. Shingles is a painful, blistery rash. About one-third of adults over age 60 develop shingles.
The 25-week study, conducted at the University of California, Los Angeles, involved 112 people, ages 59 to 86. The researchers found that T’ai chi, by itself, increased immunity against varicella zoster to a level that was comparable to having received the standard vaccine against the virus. When a person did T’ai chi and received the vaccine, the immunity against the virus reached a level normally seen in middle age, said the study, which was published in the April issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. The study results confirm that a behavioral intervention such as T’ai chi can trigger a positive, virus-specific immune response, said lead author Michael Irwin, professor of psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA. “These are exciting findings, because the positive results of this study also have implications for other infectious diseases, like influenza and pneumonia. Since older adults often show blunted protective responses to vaccines, this study suggests that T’ai chi is an approach that might complement and augment the efficacy of other vaccines, such as influenza,” Irwin, who is also director of the UCLA Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology, said in a prepared statement.

To Solve Problems...
Make an “Undo List” Written by Ace Remas
A
ll of us have a lot to do. We make lists so we don’t forget to do them. Some of us carry a yellow highlighter to experience the satisfaction of crossing out what has been done. At the end of the day, we review our lists to see how much was accomplished and, woefully, how much has been added to the list or did not get done. Rather than shrinking over time our to-do lists seem to grow larger. Lots of tasks don’t get done because we don’t know how to go about getting them done. It’s a problem. We’re stuck. Getting stuck and finding our to-do list longer and longer threatens discouragement and feelings of futility. The positive surge of energy we may have experienced when we created our to-do list has now turned into negative confusion and paralysis. Out goes the list, and on goes the HDTV!
of the potential for internal accomplishm e n t . Fi n d i n g mental peace and contentment is an exceptional accomplishment. The great teachers of the ages demonstrate this. Follow their example and look inward.
Finding Looking inward is easy, and does not take much preparation or effort to get started. We mental peace simply sit down in a comfortable position; make sure our & contentment back is erect and body relaxed, place our hands in our lap, and focus on the breath for a while. You breathe is an exceptional in and you exhale; you breath in and you exhale. thinking, no planning. (Don’t put meditation We make our lists to find happiness accomplishment. No on your to do list!) After a few minutes you’ll find
and contentment. We believe if everything on our to-do lists were completed we would find a moment’s respite, some satisfaction, some sense of security. Yet, rarely do we experience such states of mind. The truth is—and we all know this deep down—we’ll never finish our work. The more we accomplish, the more we need to get done. Going on in this way we’ll die with an overloaded to-do list, even though we might have emptied dozens of highlighters recording our accomplishments. We won’t find contentment in doing more. The secret of contentment is to “undo.”
your mind relaxed. Then focus your mental energies at your heart, believing it to be the location of your mind. Imagine your mind like empty space. Thoughts and feelings come and go. Bodily sensations—the tactile sensation of the body itself like the temperature of the air on your skin, the movement of your chest as you breathe, perceptions, sounds—come and go. Let them go without giving them any attention, as clouds passing by in an empty sky. Realize that this spacious feeling at the heart, where your world appears, is your mind. It is always like this, calm, clear, with perceptions, thoughts and feelings coming and going. Appreciate your own pure mind and be happy. When you feel this slight joy, direct all your attention onto it and meditate single-pointedly on this joy as long as you can.
The secret of contentment is to “undo.” Make an undo list. Your life has issues: wishes, relation-
ships, money. That’s okay. It’s your life! And, it’s your mind. Your successes and failures don’t happen separately from the mind. There is nothing outside your mind that has the power to harm you or to make you happy. There are plenty of examples of people who have everything–beauty, wealth, power; and they remain unhappy people. There are others who suffer great tragedies such as disease and misfortune and still find contentment and serenity. These examples prove that it is the mind itself, not the things outside the mind, that will give us what we want. We need to undo the expectation that material accomplishments will result in mental happiness. The best way to undo these material expectations that are sure to cause us discontent is to meditate on the mind itself. Because we’re so focused on external accomplishment we remain ignorant
