Mom and I had a cleaning business for 19 years, never realizing the toxic effect the cleaning supplies had on our bodies. The dust particles and carpet fiber had destroyed mom’s lungs. Upon leaving the cleaning business, I went to work at the Airlines, again not realizing how harmful the work was to my health. The jet fuel, the radiation from the x-ray machines and the burnt rubber from the aircraft landing had coated my lungs. My mother and I had no idea how toxic we were. We only knew we did not feel well and were very tired all the time. In February 2004 my mom, Sharon Crank, found out about the Circle of Life Spa and called me excited to go check it out. We visited the spa and were both amazed and fascinated at how much better we felt by using the saunas and body wraps. With the help of Circle of Life, we soon detoxed and felt incredible! During that year, Sharon became a volunteer at Circle of Life Spa. She loved working and helping the many wonderful clients who came to the center. I began to volunteer at the spa as well and it was a great experience. When we found out the spa was closing, Sharon decided to buy the Circle of Life Spa! So many people counted on, relied on, and supported the Circle of Life Spa and we are happy to carry on this legacy. So as mother and daughter working as a team again, we have begun our new journey……. The Circle of Life Continues! We welcome you to come in for a visit, see our new changes and enjoy the hospitality.

Massage and lymphatic circulation therapies can gently stimulate your system to help remove waste & toxins and improve metabolism. I use integrative massage techniques & the latest equipment to help create well-being, harmony and a healthy immune system. In-home visits available. •• Joan Hite, LMT: 775.412.1543

PUBLISHER/EDITOR LETTER

STORY The Amazing Blueberry By Sara Piccola

B

lueberries, also called Bilberries, are one of the only fruits native to North America, growing throughout the woods and mountainous regions. For centuries, blueberries were gathered by Native Americans and used for multiple purposes. The blossom end of the blueberry, the calyx, forms the shape of a fivepointed star, leading elders of the tribe to believe that “star berries” were sent from the Great Spirit to relieve children’s hunger during famine. The blueberry gets its rich deep coloring from its high content of the antioxidant anthocyanin, a water-soluble pigment that imparts colors ranging from blue to shades of red. Blueberries are found on small shrubs belonging to the heath (Ericaceae) family. They are primarily used to boost the immune system, and also play an important role in many other health benefits. A 4-oz glass of red or white wine contains anthocyanins; however, blueberries produce 38 percent more of this antioxidant, which provides a cardio protective action. Studies show that blueberries may block metabolic pathways leading to cancer, aid in lowering cholesterol and prevent bile acid from being transformed into a potentially cancer-causing form. In addition to soluble and insoluble fibers, blueberries contain tannins that can help, ironically, relieve both diarrhea and constipation. They also promote a healthy urinary tract, providing the same compounds found in cranberries. A fruit also known to enhance vision, many World War II pilots would eat blueberries believing it to improve their night vision. Simply amazing!

Dear Readers, Most of my life has been spent looking for the positives instead of the negatives. I have to ask myself at times if this is a realistic or a Pollyanna perspective. I think it is important to address the negative side of any issue and then readdress it in a positive light. Like my mother always said, “When you get lemons, make lemonade” With gas and food prices at an all time high, elections around the corner and the rising costs of health care, many Americans are afraid and the fear factor just causes further demise to our economy. I think most of us realize that sticking our head in the sand isn’t the answer; the ostrich factor may be what got us here in the first place. We can look at this from a negative perspective or we can find positive solutions. On a positive note, now more than ever people are looking for health care practitioners and businesses that offer services to assist them on their path to living a healthy and prescription free lifestyle. If you are a health oriented business, these are exciting times, Healthy Beginnings readers want to know about you. “Healthy Beginnings Magazine” was created and designed based on the premise that readers are looking for quality, unbiased, concise information. Most people do not want to be spoon fed information; they would rather make up their own mind to be accountable for their health. I believe there is always a choice, when it comes to personal health, be it mental or physical. There is not a one size fits all approach to an individual’s health and well being. We are all unique and need to be treated as such. Thank you for your readership and supporting the natural health care providers in this beautiful outdoor playground we call home. Best in Health and Happiness,

Dawn M. Gowery

Tapioca syrup provides the sweetness needed in a natural way. Produced from tapioca starch using a natural fermentation process, tapioca syrup is a gluten-free and non-GMO (genetically modified organism) alternative to corn syrup, sugar, honey, maple syrup and molasses. Aside from being a healthful sweetener replacement, tapioca is also known to aid in loosening bowel movements. High in starch, tapioca syrup is commonly used in the production of other foods or as a replacement for corn syrup in baked goods. Tapioca syrup is used to add sweetness, binding or texture to beverages, baked goods, table syrups, frozen desserts and candies. When used as a binding agent, tapioca helps to keep foods such as meats from drying out after they are processed. Tapioca pellets are commonly used as a thickening agent in pie and tart fillings or in soups, sauces and gravies. A Âź-cup of tapioca syrup may consist of 42 grams of carbohydrates, yet no fat and only 168 calories.

Michael LeMay Doctor of Audiology By Brittany Russell

Dr. LeMay is an American Academy of Audiology 2006-2007 Scholar Award recipient, which honors individuals who complete a total of 50 continuing education hours within a two-year period, demonstrate a dedication to the field of Audiology and a commitment to continued professional excellence. “Continuing education is very important,” says Dr. LeMay, “especially when technology is improving and things change so rapidly.”

A

Wooster High School graduate, Dr. LeMay is a Reno local. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno, receiving his undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Dr. LeMay received his Master’s from Southern Illinois University and his Doctorate of Audiology from Pennsylvania College of Optometry, School of Audiology. Dr. LeMay has practiced in Reno for 21 years, and has been at his current location on Mill Street since 1996. In his first psychology course, Dr. LeMay observed deaf children receiving therapy, and his passion for audiology took off from there. He strives for accurate diagnosis, fitting his patients with the best technology, and making appropriate referrals when needed. When a patient comes to Dr. LeMay’s office for the first time, they are greeted by a warm staff. Upon a first visit, Dr. LeMay wants to gain an understanding of why the patient has come to see him, and does his best to get all their questions answered. His patients come from a range of various ages – from toddlers to senior citIzens. An AudigyCertifiedTM professional, Dr. LeMay is one of the 300 practitioners nationwide who possess the highest credentials and are among the country’s most experienced hearing care professionals. Their experience is measured by their commitment to patient satisfaction, continuing education, and the application of current technologies.

September 2008

The Reno Autism Information Network (RAIN) lists Dr. LeMay as “recommended for diagnosing auditory processing deficits in school aged children – Great with kids.” When speech development has not come as quickly as expected, one might think the child has Autism. If a child is not speaking, or his communication is impaired, the child may, in fact, be suffering from a hearing impairment– differentiating between the two is crucial. Dr. LeMay works with a local Neuropsychologist and a Speech Pathologist in order to ensure his patients receive the utmost treatment. Many adults present with difficulty distinguishing key words in conversations. The first step is thorough diagnosis. Dr. LeMay helps these individuals with a personalized treatment plan which may or may not include hearing technology. If a hearing device is indicated, Dr. LeMay provides extensive follow-ups to ensure maximum benefits. Outside of his practice, Dr. LeMay enjoys Lake Tahoe and spends his time outdoors mountain biking and road biking. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for 30 years and has three children: two daughters, 25 and 23; and one son, 19. Dr. LeMay has two golden retrievers, Holly, 15, and Champ, 5 months – the new puppy transition went smoothly and the two are “best buds.” Go to ad on page 21.

HEALTH BRAIN

Biorhythm Brain Boosters Sometimes it’s not which smart nutrients you take but when you take them that really counts... By John Morgenthaler

C

ould you be smarter than you already are? Could you think faster, calculate quicker and remember more than you already do? The answer is undeniably YES! Modern science has identified dozens of “smart nutrients” that have powerful, positive effects on the human brain. What is even more exciting is the fact that they’ve identified the optimal time of day (or night) to take these brainboosting nutrients so as to have maximum effect on cognition and brain function. The daily human sleep/wake cycle is the result of our internal biorhythm. What scientists have discovered is that certain nutrients have a more pronounced affect on the brain and body when they are ingested in accordance with the human biorhythm. Thus, biorhythm brain boosters are a proven fact that could allow you to rebuild and protect your brain while you sleep, and learn better and remember more while you are awake. Of course, some “smart nutrients” are not bound by biorhythms and will promote and enhance cognitive function no matter what time of day they are ingested. But others have definitely shown to work better when taken in conjunction with the biorhythm cycle. What follows is a list of four “smart nutrients” that function as Daytime Brain Boosters and work best when taken in the morning, allowing them to work during your “awake biorhythm.”

Day Time Brain Booster # 1: Ashwagandha 3,000 Years of Brain Boosting Power Ashwagandha is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants scavenge free radicals, providing a protective and restorative effect on all tissues including the brain.

For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

Research in India demonstrated that ashwagandha increases antioxidant activity in the brain, protecting neuronal tissue from free radical damage. Ashwagandha’s ability to scavenge free radicals from brain tissue makes it a valuable component in your smart nutrient arsenal to bolster brainpower. And as a welcome side effect, it helps protect you from free radical induced dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Regenerating Damaged Neurons Naturally While ashwagandha’s free radical scavenging properties have long been thought to be the mechanism behind its memory enhancing ability, recent research has dramatically expanded its powerful properties. Not only has ashwagandha been shown to protect brain cells from the damaging effects of beta-amyloid, but it also can actually regenerate neural networks already damaged or destroyed by beta-amyloid. This aspect is now the subject of intensive scientific investigation, since a true “cure” for Alzheimer’s disease will require not only stopping the progressive deterioration of the disease, but also reversing the damage that has already occurred.

Daytime Brain Booster #2: Panax ginseng Broad Protection For Many Areas of Your Health A number of clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Panax ginseng in improving different aspects of mental functioning. In one study, 112 healthy volunteers older than 40 years were given 400 mg per day of Panax ginseng for eight weeks. They showed better and faster reactions to psychometric tests and improved abstract thinking.

September 2008

Two other studies – each involving healthy volunteers who received 200 mg daily of Panax ginseng for eight weeks - demonstrated improvement in attention, processing, and auditory reaction time, social functioning and mental health. In another study, 20 healthy young volunteers received a single 400 mg dose of ginseng. They showed improvement in cognitive performance, memory performance, speed of memory tasks and accuracy of attention-related tasks. The ginsenosides in Panax ginseng have a variety of beneficial actions, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer effects. The importance of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds in preventing mental deterioration and improving overall mental acuity cannot be emphasized enough.

Daytime Brain Booster #3: Peony Proven Learning Enhancer Paeoniflorin is one of the major constituents of peony root. Paeoniflorin has various biological actions including improvement of memory and antioxidant activity. The exact action of peony in improving memory has yet to be determined. Research reported within the last two years has determined that peony protects neurons from damage. Since neurons fire in your brain almost twice as much when you are awake compared to when you are asleep, it stands to reason that the protective powers of peony are best put to use during the day. This allows for improved learning and memory and reduces the opportunity for mental deterioration to take hold.

Biorhythm Brain Boosters You really can be smarter than you are right now, and you can protect your brain from dreaded memory-robbing diseases like Alzheimer’s if you understand and consume biorhythm brain boosting nutrients. It’s never too late to start, and you’ll be better off for it, now and well into the future. References: 1. Dhuley JN. Effect of ashwagandha on lipid peroxidation in stress-induced animals. Schisandra has traditionally been used to treat viral and chemical hepatitis, but recent animal experiments and human studies have shown that it improves mental clarity, concentration and coordination. So if you want to clear your mind and truly concentrate, a dose of schisandra upon wakening is a great place to start. In one set of experiments, mice were given the chemical scopolamine, which induces amnesia. One group was then given an herbal treatment containing schisandra. The researchers stated that the treatment “significantly reduced scopolamineinduced memory deficits. Schisandra’s exact mode of action is not well understood at this time. However, in vitro (test tube) experiments found that schisandra limits neurotoxicity induced by amyloid-beta peptide (which causes oxidation) in cultured cortical rat neurons. These results suggest that schisandra has “protective characteristics against neuronal cell death and cognitive impairments often observed in Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, ischemic injury and other neurodegenerative diseases.

Is wind power possible in Nevada? A resource map of Nevada published by the Department of Energy’s Wind Program and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) depicts wind speed estimates at 50 meters, a speed suitable for utility-scale wind development. In the future, plans are to provide wind speed estimates at 30 meters, useful for small wind turbine opportunities.

hat’s better than a glass of milk and a chocolate chip cookie, or your favorite cereal covered in refreshing, cold milk? These types of meal and snack combinations have been revisited for decades by many well-intentioned people. The fact is, milk has been glorified and heralded by various so-called “health experts” for years. We are told by endless sources that milk is one of the best sources for calcium. But did you know that consumption of pasteurized milk and milk products can actually be harmful to your health?

Let us first make a distinction between the picture painted by the government and medical communities of tainted, disease-ridden milk compared to clean, wholesome raw milk from a reliable, organic source. When the raw milk you are drinking is obtained from a well-maintained facility following organic standards that allows its cows to graze only on certified organic grass and does not treat the animals with chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics, the result is an extremely healthful and beneficial substance that gives life. As with anything else that is not produced in a sanitary environment, food

products will reflect the quality of the facility from where they originate. One very good example of bacteria entering the food chain and making people sick is the products which come from commercial and factory farms. It’s no secret that thousands of meat products are currently being recalled off the shelves. ABC news reported on February 18, 2008 that, “the U.S. Department of Agriculture ordered a recall of 143 million pounds of beef.” The fact is that this type of food product represents the bulk of what is available for consumption on the market. That is why there is such a movement from concerned farmers, consumers, and specific organizations to change current farming methods and practices. This issue is a serious problem that threatens the health and well-being of everyone in our nation. Most farmers who sell raw milk do so with the intent to deliver a healthful, untainted product to those who consume it. Their efforts and practices are time consuming and expensive, but most farmers do it because they possess a passion for producing healthy products for their customers. Many of them are more than happy to let the public come in and learn about their processes. Can commercial farmers say the same? Mounting evidence suggests otherwise. Raw, unpasteurized, whole milk contains the right balance of fat, protein, and enzymes that nature intended for the body to use. Without fat, the body is not unable to absorb calcium, nor is it able to digest protein. You also need saturated fats in order to absorb calcium and build strong bones. Nina Planck says, “Milk fat also contains glycosphingolipids, which are fats that encourage cell metabolism and growth and fight gastrointestinal infections.” Unadulterated raw milk remains one of the best sources of Vitamins A and D. Milk that has had the fat removed does not contain these vitamins, so they are added back in as synthetic versions of these vitamins that are not recognized by the body, and therefore, not absorbed. Much of these milk products also contain antibiotics to keep away illness due to poor sanitation practices, and steroids and hormones which are intended to artificially boost cattle growth rates. Hormones in food have been repeatedly linked to the early onset of puberty in children and diseases that are be-

o determine your optimum dates for sowing fall crops, add three weeks to the days to maturity ratings listed below or shown on your seed packs to compensate for days that are getting shorter. Then count back from your average first fall frost date to find the date you should sow each crop. (To find your average first fall frost date, search by state in the tables provided at http://cdo.ncdc.noaa.gov) Cool-season plants will continue to grow a little after nights turn chilly, but they will make most of their new growth early on, while the weather is still warm.

Fall Harvest Crops beets broccoli Brussels sprouts cauliflower cabbage carrots Chinese cabbage cilantro

Many of the best crops of fall — including salad greens and various cabbage cousins — will refuse to germinate in soil warmer than 85 degrees, so the seeds are best started indoors (on a 90-degree day, surface soil temperatures may actually be 110 degrees or more). The procedure for growing seedlings is the same as in spring, but care for transplanted seedlings require some extra hardware. Insect pressure in late summer is severe, so use homemade or purchased lightweight row covers to exclude critters. It helps to shade each seedling with a lightcolored flowerpot, pail or other cover for two to three days after transplanting. Protected from scorching sun, the seedlings can concentrate on growing reliable roots. Cabbage and broccoli seedlings need to be planted at least eight weeks before the first fall frost, and as long as their roots are kept moist, they seem to benefit from a spell of hot weather as late summer days become shorter. When set out so late that they miss the last warm spells, cabbage cousins tend to stop growing too soon. Whether you’re working with seedlings you grew yourself or bought at a store, get them in the ground as soon as you can. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

Jungian Dreamwork Series:

Animals (Part II)

the dreamer at the time of the dream. Finally, as you work with the animal figures in your dreams, try to remain true to the actual social and ecological nature of the animal being considered. For example, the dream-maker is more likely to use a wolverine to symbolize aggression than, say, a koala bear.

I

n last month’s article we examined how the animals that appear in our dreams sometimes function as symbols of the Self, Carl Jung’s term for the core of the psyche. The animals listed were: snakes, owls, ducks, geese, swans, frogs, turtles, whales, dolphins, porpoises, fish, bugs and bees. To that list we could also add the following: lions, tigers, and bears (for they are the “rulers” of their animal communities like the Self is meant to be the “ruler” of the psyche); bison (because they symbolize wisdom and nourishment); eagles and hawks (because of their keen eyesight and over-arching perspective); and elephants (because of their intelligence, memory, and long life). In this article, we turn our attention to the ways in which animals can also serve as symbols of our instinctual life. The following paragraphs examine some of the more common animals encountered in the dreams of North Americans. Primary focus is given to the archetypal (cross-cultural) meanings attached to these animals. It is important to keep this level of symbolism in mind as you work with your dreams. However, you will also want to explore your personal associations to the dream figures (animal or otherwise), for sometimes these associations will take priority over the archetypal perspective. The interpretation of any dream figure also varies with the specific events taking place in the dream, as well as the life context of

A man dreams: “I am leading a thin, tired horse out of the rain and into a barn.” Horses are often used as symbols of the body and one’s physical health. Like the horse, this man needs to nourish and rest his body. If you dream of a horse that is sick, diseased, or injured in some way, give some examination to your own physical health. Are you over-stressed or asking too much of your body? Are you listening and responding to its needs and innate wisdom? Horses can also symbolize your life energy and instinctual drives. To dream of taming and riding a horse can symbolize the process of developing greater control over your instincts/passions, such as your sexual impulses, eating or drinking behaviors, aggression, or competitiveness. The symbolism of the horse can also be applied to events from your outer life. If you are kicked by a horse or bucked off of a horse that does not normally behave in this way, life could be offering you the message that you are not listening to your body and deeper psyche. You might ask yourself if your ego is serving the needs of the body and the Self, or is it using the body to serve itself? A young man dreamed, “I see an older man in a large concrete drainage pipe. He is trying to step on and kick some small animals. They look like cats to me, but he claims they were rats.” Because wild rats have a history of spreading diseases to humans (e.g. the Black Death of the 1300’s) and of contaminating food supplies with their droppings, they often symbolize a destructive energy or attitude within the psyche or one’s outer life. Cats, on the other hand, are symbols of the instinctual feminine. They can symbolize our feelings, but also the maternal instincts of nurturance, self-protection, and protection of offspring. Cats are excellent hunters and admirable fighters, and often retain a certain wildness and independence despite their domestication. Having ready access to the instinctual wisdom of a cat can be a great asset. If you dream of losing your cat, or of a cat being

A young woman dreams: “I am in a maze with Lucy, my dog. We are having a very hard time finding our way out.” It is said that “dogs are mans’ best friend.” Evidently this saying applies in the land of the unconscious as well. Because their hearing and sense of smell are much more refined than that of humans, dogs often serve as guides to the unconscious and the spirit world in dreams and myths. For example, among pre-Hispanic Mexicans A woman dreams: “I see a fox running it was believed that a dog guides its away from me. As he runs he looks back master’s spirit to the land of the dead at me, and I see that he has the face of my following his/her death. symbol of loyalty, cooperation, and teamwork. Because of its wisdom and a healthy balancing of independence with interdependence, the “spirit of the wolf” can be a helpful guide on life’s journey. Unlike dogs, however, the wolf is also represented in a very negative light in a variety of myths and fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood. In our dreams, the wolf can sometimes symbolize a dangerously destructive force. It has been associated with war, chaos, gluttony and the blind, unchecked desire to devour, consume, and acquire. Although it is somewhat unpopular to speak negatively of wolves in this day and age, the psyche is not “politically correct,” and recognizes a duality in the symbolism of the wolf.

A Closer Look at

Bottled Water By Brittany Russell

- $1.6 billion); Aquafina (PepsiCo - $1.5 billion); Poland Spring (Nestle Waters - $878 million); Arrowhead (Nestle Waters - $585 million); Nestle Pure Life (Nestle Waters - $545 million); Crystal Geyser (Crystal Geyser Water Company - $529 million); Deer Park (Nestle Waters - $499 million); Ozarka (Nestle Waters - $352 million); Ice Mountain (Nestle Waters - $292 million); Zephyrhills (Nestle Waters - $271 million). Other major brands include Déjà Blue at number 12, Fiji at number 14, Evian at number 16 and Glacier Waters at number 19. As we pay between one and four dollars for a bottle of water, one might wonder where the water comes from. It is estimated that about 25 percent of the bottled waters consumed in the U.S. come from municipal water supplies. Most go through significant processing such as reverse osmosis, deionization, activated carbon filtration and other treatments.

I

n terms of landfill growth and dollars being spent toward bottled water by consumers, one might ask: how big is my footprint? Eight out of ten plastic water bottles become landfill waste (creating 2 million tons of trash), and it can take 700 years before they only begin to decompose. Bottled water has sustained its position as a booming billion-dollar industry in the U.S. As early as 1767, the waters of Jackson’s Spa in Boston were bottled and sold to satisfy a rapidly growing demand. About 1800, the waters of a mineral spring near Albany, New York, were bottled commercially, and in 1820, the first Saratoga Springs bottled water was sold. With more than 100 bottled water brands sold in the U.S., the bombardment of options grows, and we continue to buy, buy, buy. In 2007, the U.S. consumed 8.823 million gallons of bottled water, making us the world’s top consumers. The top ten bestselling brands last year were: Desani (Coca Cola Company

Read the label carefully. If it is packaged as “purified” or “drinking water,” chances are it came from a municipal water supply, and unless the water has been “substantially” altered, it must state on the label that the water comes from a municipal source. Some included on the best-sellers list are described below:

Desani: Derived from a municipal source and undergoes a reverse-osmosis-based purification process. However, Desani adds a blend of minerals after the purification process.

Aquafina: Derived from a municipal source and goes through a purification process that uses charcoal filtration, reverse-osmosis, ozonination and other elements. During purification, virtually all of the natural minerals are removed from the water. Arrowhead: The original source, to which this brand owes its name, is high in the San Bernardino Mountain – a natural rock formation in the shape of an arrowhead points to the Arrowhead Hot Springs.

Evian: From a source in the northern

French Alps. The water is collected from an aquifer that is fed by snowmelt and rainfall. Other than filtration through the ground’s sand and clay, no other purifying process is used to produce this bottled water.

Wholesale dollar sales for bottled water in the U.S. exceeded $11.55 billion in 2007 (a 6.4 percent increase from $10.85 billion in 2006). The Beverage Marketing Corporation anticipates further growth in consumption, a 6.7 percent increase to 9.418 million gallons this year. With so many campaigns today – “Refill not Landfill and “Filter for Good – reaching out to consumers to use other sources of drinking water, it is amazing how the bottled water industry grows steadily each year. We may, then, begin to wonder why do we continue to buy water-filled plastic bottles.

Here are some tips to help you cut down on plastic bottle usage: • Stop buying plastic water bottles! • Check into a toxic-free sports bottle, aluminum bottle, or glass bottle. There are a substantial variety of sport bottles made from different materials that can withstand all your hydration needs. Keep refilling those. • Purchase a jug with a filter to keep in your refrigerator. Filters that attach to your kitchen faucet are also available. • Look for your nearest water fill-up station. • Reuse and Refill!

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

Creating Harmony in Your Relationships By Marc Hiscox

C

an you remember the last conversation where you went away disappointed because it did not end as you wanted? As you think back and analyze the conversation, your attention most likely is on what was lacking, rather than on the positive aspects and what can be done to improve the next conversation. Staying focused on the negative aspects, feeling guilty, or being judgmental towards them or yourself will most likely just create the same poor results for the next meeting.

Keep your Attention on your Intention. • Identify your intention on the issue and the desire to reach their goal as well as yours. Decide on the priority and give it your singular attention. Know what is important to you and ask what is important to them. • Give some thought about the issue and don’t just blunder through the conversation.

person is put at ease. When focusing on harmony, you may take a fresh view of the issue at hand. To create a positive conversation, expect that the other will be cooperative. If you worry about them being uncooperative and argumentative, that is what you will attract. Take the time to picture a conversation that will flow in harmony. Think about the desired outcome before you even enter into the conversation. This will create a momentum to clearly convey your meaning. The combining of your thoughts, ideas and experiences have the potential to create something greater than you could create on your own. Let go of what is not in common, where you disagree, and focus on where you are in harmony and do agree. And by the Law of Attraction you solicit more of what you do want.

• To clear up a particular issue, stick to the issue and don’t allow yourself to get sidetracked. When interacting with another person, be clear in your communication.

If you believe and expect a harmonious outcome that does not have contradiction in your thinking, you increase the potential of both walking away happy. Keep in mind you can only control your own thoughts and emotions. Allow others the same and teach by example.

Slow down and ask, “What do I want right now from this situation?”

Trust yourself enough to allow others to be who they are.

• Creating a harmonious relationship is far more important than the issue. As you recognize that harmony is what you want most, your negative emotion goes away.

ASK

DR. SOIL:

• Relationship Accountability Skills • Conflict Resolution • Anger Management • Setting Boundaries • Parenting Skills • Stress Reduction

By Mark O’Farrell and Craig Witt, Soil Council

Q: What kind of plants can I grow in my vegetable garden in the fall? A: There are a lot of vegetables that prefer cool temperatures and do well in this

area. Garlic is a wonderful, easy to grow vegetable that needs to be planted in the fall. It will be ready to harvest next year in June. There are numerous relatives in the brassica family including cabbage, broccoli, collards, kale, mustard greens and various Asian greens that you can plant and harvest this year. They all love our cool fall weather. Cabbage and broccoli take much longer to reach an edible stage, so it helps to get them started early and transplant them out. The others can be direct seeded in the garden, as their leaves can be enjoyed at any stage, from small sprouts to fully mature plants. Other favorites that can be direct seeded in the fall are lettuce, carrots, beets and spinach. Even the hardiest vegetables can be injured by severe frost, and their growth will slow to a stop as temperatures begin to stay below freezing. One way to extend your season is to build a simple cold frame or use a frost blanket, also called row cover, to cover your plants. You can create a microclimate for your plants at very little cost. Eliot Coleman’s Four Season Harvest is a comprehensive reference for off season gardening.

Q: What can I do with my garden area to prepare for winter? A: “Feed your Mama!”

The earth has been working overtime all summer to feed you, now is the time to start cycling nutrition back into the soil. If you feed your garden and tuck it in for the winter, it will wake up and be ready to crank out the cornucopia again next year. Mulch any perennials or cool weather crops you’re going to keep. Incorporate the remaining plant residue into the soil, or remove it and feed it to your compost pile. If you haven’t had your soil tested, now is an excellent time to do it. Like taking yourself to the doctor for a check-up, a soil test can reveal any nutritional deficiencies that could adversely impact soil health. Feeding your soil compost now, along with any other recommended mineral nutrients, gives your soil lots of time to digest. Some amendments, like rock phosphate and calcium, are very slow reacting in the soil and need a few months to really help your soil. Finally, think about planting a winter cover crop. Winter annuals, like cereal grains and hardy clovers, will protect your soil from the harsh winter elements and actively cycle nutrients while your garden takes a long winter’s nap.

Acupuncture in Western Medicine

By Robert Rand, M.D.

A

cupuncture originated in the Far East about 2500 years ago. However, in 1991, a male body was discovered in a glacier high in the Alps, well preserved by the elements after over 5000 years. The body had tattoos that correlate with known acupuncture meridians, leading many experts to now believe that acupuncture may have been practiced in the Stone Age.

of Arthritis & Musculoskeletal & Skin Diseases found that acupuncture provides pain relief. An article in the prestigious and widely accepted journal ‘Annals of Internal Medicine’ quotes Dr. Stephen E. Straus, NCCAM Director, “for the first time, a clinical trial with sufficient rigor, size and duration has shown that acupuncture reduces the pain and functional impairment of osteoarthritis of the knee.”

The hallmarks of Western Medicine are scientific validation and reproducibility. Acupuncture, having been used for thousands of years, does indeed meet those standards in many cases. In 1996, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) finally removed the acupuncture needle from its list of experimental devices.

Acupuncture has given relief to millions of people around the world and has been used in the Far East for thousands of years. It can provide relief for many ailments and western science is starting to not only notice, but also to use these powerful methodologies and technology to validate efficacy and usefulness.

Several studies using the ultramodern Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have shown decreased activity in areas that regulate pain while acupuncture is performed. Functional MRI studies also show increased blood flow to areas of the brain. Acupuncture practitioners know that certain points help with visual problems; needling at these points show increased blood flow to the occipital lobe, an area in the back of the brain where the visual cortex is located. Anyone with vision problems needs to seek care from a trained ophthalmologist. However, in the hands of a skilled practitioner, acupuncture can likely provide a very potent tool in helping visually related issues. In 2004, a study funded by National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Institute For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

New York Times best-selling author and spiritual activist comes to Las Vegas! For an Enchanted Evening Lecture:

What ingredients to look for? Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of dietary antioxidants. Look for bars with low-glycemic carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables sources with high ORAC scores. Why choose bars with lowglycemic carbohydrates? Not all carbohydrates are created equal! Low-glycemic carbohydrates produce only small fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels – a secret to long term health. Some low-glycemic foods (scores <55) are strawberries and oranges. Why is a high ORAC score beneficial? ORAC is Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, a measure of total antioxidant power. Eating foods rich in antioxidants boosts our immune system, which is our natural barrier to ward off viruses and disease. Some high ORAC foods are spinach and blueberries.

Neuromuscular

Dentistry

W

hen thinking about dentistry, common topics that come to mind include the usual terms: crown, root canal, fillings, whitening, etc. Neuromuscular dentistry, on the other hand, concerns itself with how a proper, aligned bite affects not only the head, jaw, and neck, but the patient’s health as a whole. Recent scientific discoveries have shown that a misaligned bite is implicated in many of the aches and pains associated with living in a hectic, modern world. Occlusion, or how a person’s bite aligns at rest, is not often discussed in terms of how it can dramatically effect—good or bad—the health of the whole person. The collapse of a proper aligned bite, either through tooth loss, or the altered growth and development of face and jaw, often create hypertonicity, or increased tension of the muscles. This increased tension of the muscles hampers the proper movement of the head, neck and jaw and cause upper airway problems. Neuromuscular dentistry takes a physiologic approach (opposed to mechanical) to establish an occlusal (bite) position from which treatment is started. Thinking in terms of a chewing system, that is composed of three parts: the teeth, muscles/ nerves (which move the jaw), and the Tempromandibular Joint (TMJ, the “jaw joint”), regardless of the accommodative capacity of the muscles involved with the TMJ, the most dominant part of this system is the teeth. Every human being must bring his or her teeth together several thousand times a day—often at the expense of one or more parts of the system—to swallow, chew and speak. The occlusion of teeth, or bite, and the cervical spine are two very significant links in the postural chain. The TMJ, which is influenced by both, is stuck between the proverbial “rock and a hard spot”. Pathological conditions (pain and/or noise) in the joint occur because the joint must accommodate both occlusion and cervical dysfunctions, which cause joint derangements. Even more frequently (~80% of the time) muscles of the neck, face, and jaws are implicated as the source of the pain, either directly or via myofacial trigger points. Many headache researchers have failed to acknowledge that there is a myofacial trigger point to tension and most migraine headaches. A lot can be learned from looking at the head, which weighs an astonishing 15 lbs. in an adult. The Neuromuscular dentist For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

views the head from the front and side to see that it is correctly centered over the body. With a poor unbalanced occlusion (bite), there’s often a thrust forward in the head position, where the ears are forward of the center of the shoulders, increasing the “felt weight” of the head to approx 30 lbs. People commonly say, “I carry my stress in my shoulders”; by this analysis, you can clearly understand why. Neuromuscular dentists have found that a misaligned bite sets up a cascade of alterations in posture at the parallel planes (shoulders/hips/feet) to keep the head in a position where the horizontal gaze of the eyes is parallel to the horizon. Conversely, the bite can be altered by addressing unequal bone lengths in one leg relative to the other. Symptoms of a misaligned bite can be far-reaching, including headaches, dizziness, ear ringing, neck pain, lower back pain, tingling in the fingers, plugged ears, tiredness in the face, neck, and throat, depression, anxiety, high blood pressure, or worn/chipped front teeth. With the help of sophisticated sensors and instrumentation, neuromuscular dentistry seeks to properly align the bite. Then, with the help of other complementary health professionals, it works to restore alignment and balance to the body. Of course, injuries, age, and existing conditions may limit correct posture, but neuromuscular dentistry can still optimize the current condition and set a patient off on a new direction in overall health and well-being. HIGH PRICES Household Energy

A

mericans spend more than $160 billion a year to heat, cool, light and live in their homes, and this energy bill continues

to grow. Houses use about 21 percent of the energy used in the US each year, consume a significant amount of electricity and natural gas, and contribute to 17 percent of national greenhouse gas emissions. While our homes are more efficient today than they were 30 years ago, considerable opportunity remains for greater home energy efficiency and the associated benefits. When the need to conserve energy in your house is considered, then the focus should be mainly on heating and cooling processes. They are the major uses of energy. Hot water heating is also a sizable use of energy, as is the cooking process with surface unit and oven. Refrigerators and lighting use a significant amount of energy.

The price of power per kilowatt-hour has gone from an average of 2 cents to 10 cents over the past 40 years. Many households could save 20 to 30 percent on their household energy bills through cost-effective household improvements such as buying more energy-efficient products and appliances, sealing air and duct leaks, and adding insulation. HERBS & SPICES

Basil By Brittany Russell

T

he bright, clean and, at times, spicy fragrance of basil is unmistakable. The round, often pointed leaves look like peppermint to which it is related. . The term “basil” derives from the Greek word Basilikos meaning “herb worth of kings.” The annual herb is native to central and tropical areas of Asia and Africa, though it originated in India. It is important in Thai, Vietnamese and Laotian cuisine, and is commercially cultivated in California, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Israel, Egypt, Morocco, Italy, Madagascar and Mexico. There are many different types of basil plants, the more common being bush and sweet basil. The foliage is tender, and emits a spicy, clove-like aroma. Sweet basil leaves have a stronger perfume than bush basil and are smaller. The leaves are usually dried and used for medicinal, culinary and cosmetic purposes, as well as essential oils, perfumes, soaps, shampoos, dental preparations, ayurvedics and aromatherapy. The seeds and roots are rarely used.

According to the World’s Healthiest Foods Rating, basil rated excellent in vitamin K (>=75 percent DV); very good in iron, calcium and vitamin A (>= 50 percent DV); and good in dietary fiber, manganese, magnesium, vitamin C and potassium (>= 25 percent DV).

Basil has demonstrated various healing properties, some of which include lowering fever, relaxing spasms, improving digestion and fighting against internal parasites and bacteria. As an herbal remedy, basil can be used to treat diseases that inflict the brain, heart, lungs and bladder. It is also used to combat colds, poor digestion, nausea, abdominal cramps, migraine, insomnia, slight depression, anxiety and exhaustion. The eugenol component of basil’s volatile oils has been the subject of extensive study, since this substance can block the activity of an enzyme in the body called cyclooxygenase. This enzyme-inhibiting effect of the eugenol in basil qualifies as an “anti-inflammatory” food that can provide important healing benefits along with symptomatic relief for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory bowel conditions. For external use, basil is used for acne, loss of smell, insect bites and stings, snakebite and skin irritations. To close enlarged pores, infuse basil with wine, and to tone the skin, basil is the main ingredient for an aromatic body rub. Since basil can imitate the female hormone, estrogen, it is useful with menstrual discomfort. Basil essential oil is used with great success for headaches and helps to reduce allergies due to the effect it has on the adrenal cortex, which controls allergies related to stress. Because of its insecticide properties, basil cultivated in a garden keeps unwanted insects away. In its homeland, India, the use of basil in cooking is pretty limited. A type of basil is considered a sacred plant dedicated to Vishnu, the supreme god in Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism, and Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu. The leaves are used during religious ceremonies dedicated to Vishnu, in particular the ones in favor of family wellness. In ayurvedics, basil is used as a remedy for many diseases. It is also common in India to plant basil in order to check the solubility of soil. Moreover, it is believed the presence of basil keeps evil spirits away while attracting divine blessings.

With its multitude of applications and a variety of ways to incorporate basil into our diets, it is a practical way to nourish our bodies and get the most out of what we eat. The simple pesto recipe is just one delicious example!

Make Your Own...

Fresh Basil Pesto Recipe (makes 1 cup) 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed ½-cup freshly grated ParmesanReggiano or Romano cheese ½-cup extra virgin olive oil 1/3-cup pine nuts or walnuts 3 medium sized garlic cloves, minced Salt and ground black pepper to taste In a food processor, combine the basil with the pine nuts, pulse a few times. Add the garlic and pulse a few more times. Slowly add the olive oil in a constant stream while the food processor is on. Make sure everything is incorporated by scraping the sides of the processor. Add the grated cheese and pulse again until blended. Add salt and pepper to taste. *Cook’s Note: If you are using walnuts, be sure to crush before blending in the processor. You may have to pulse a few more times than you would if using pine nuts.

Kinesiology VERSUS Applied Kinesiology – an Editor’s Note

K

inesiology, also known as Human Kinetics, is the science of human movement. It focuses on how the body functions and moves. A kinesiological approach applies scientific and evidence based medical principles towards the analysis, preservation and enhancement of human movement in all settings and populations. In North America, a kinesiologist must obtain a Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Kinesiology or Human Kinetics. Kinesiologists assess human movement, performance, and function by applying the sciences of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, and motor learning. Kinesiologists are involved in the rehabilitation, prevention, and management of disorders to maintain, rehabilitate, or enhance movement, function or performance in the areas of sport, recreation, work, and exercise. They also provide consulting services, conduct research, and develop policies related to rehabilitation, human motor performance, ergonomics, and occupational health and safety. Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a practice of using manual muscle-strength testing for medical diagnosis and a subse-

quent determination of prescribed therapy. It purportedly gives feedback on the functional status of the body. AK is a practice within the realm of integrative medicine and is therefore different from kinesiology. The practice of applied kinesiology requires that it be used in conjunction with other standard diagnostic methods by professionals trained in clinical diagnosis. As such, the use of applied kinesiology or its component assessment procedures is appropriate only to individuals licensed to perform those procedures. Applied kinesiologists are often chiropractors, but may also be naturopaths, doctors, nurses and other health care workers. NATURAL

SPA-cation AT HOME

M

ost of us enjoy a little self-pampering. We often venture out to a spa for this luxury, but sometimes you don’t have to leave the comfort of your own home to enjoy a relaxing and stress relieving self-indulgence. One way to do this is through homemade facial masks. Dehydration, UV rays and aging all lead to the loss of elasticity in the face, especially in this dry, high-desert climate. Facial masks are much thicker and remain on the skin longer than your average moisturizer. This generates more inner heat opening up the pores and resulting in a quick and efficient passage of nutrients directly into the skin. Not only do masks cleanse, detoxify, and tone the skin, homemade masks can save you money and leave you looking young. You might not know that many of your average household items can be mixed together to make an effective deep cleanser for your face. A wide variety of facial masks make it easy for anyone to use for multiple benefits. Try some of these easy homemade recipes: For a quick skin tightening mask, beat an egg white until it is frothy, apply to the face and leave on for five minutes. Once the mask has tightened, rinse off thoroughly with warm water following with a cold water rinse. The ingredients found in this mask are potent in a variety of nutrients for the skin. To improve your skin texture, diminish age spots and rebuild skin collagen, use the following recipe regularly. Heavy cream is high in calcium and protein while carrots contain a significant amount of beta-carotene and anti-oxidant vitamins, and the avocado is rich with vitamin E. You will need: • ½ cup of heavy cream • 1 carrot-cooked and mashed • 1 avocado, peeled, pitted and mashed • 3 tablespoons of honey Combine ingredients in a bowl and spread over the face and neck. Relax for 15 minutes then rinse with cool water. To benefit from anti-inflammatory properties, to counteract histamines and help rid the skin of dead cells and dirt try this pineapple and olive oil mask.

BEAUTY

By Sara Piccola

You will need: • 4 large pineapple chunks or ½ cup canned, drained pineapple • 3 tablespoons of olive oil Blend ingredients using a blender until almost smooth. Apply the mixture to the face using your fingers and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and pat dry. An alternative to the traditional face mask is a peel. Peels are great for removing dead skin cells, reducing pore size, and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. Face peels can also stimulate collagen while reducing hyper pigmentation. Try this easy Papaya peel. You will need: • 1 packet of unflavored gelatin • 3 tablespoons distilled water • 1 papaya, peeled and seeded Combine gelatin and water and dissolve over low heat in a saucepan. Place papaya in a blender and blend thoroughly. Strain and save the liquid. In a small bowl, combine gelatin and papaya juice. Refrigerate for about 20 minutes or until the gelatin is just beginning to set. Spread the gelatin over the face and neck and relax for 15 minutes. Rinse off with a soft sponge or cloth dipped in warm water. Next time you need a moment of relaxation don’t stress about fitting a spa session into your busy day. Pamper your skin, body and soul with a refreshing, convenient, and beneficial homemade facial mask. If you’d rather be pampered by a professional, go to page 31.

7 Ways to Lower Your Risk of

Alzheimer’s Disease By Bruce Eichelberger, OMD

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is devastating & is expected to affect 10 million baby boomers.

F

or those less familiar, AD symptoms include an inability to think clearly, difficulty doing normal everyday activities and decreased short and medium term memory retention. Imagine going to visit your mother or grandmother and she doesn’t recognize you. She can’t tie her shoes or take a bath. She gets agitated and disoriented easily. It is heart breaking to see a loved one in this state.

What You Can Do It’s never too early to take steps to help avoid AD. In a large controlled study, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) studied the effect of mental training in seniors (65 and older). The results were very positive. After attending a 10 hourlong session of brain training, participants’ mental quickness, memory and reasoning all improved markedly. In addition, after five years, these improvements could still be measured, particularly for people who took ongoing booster training sessions. These results demonstrate that the simple act of using your brain keeps you mentally strong. It’s similar to how exercise keeps your body strong and is yet another example of the colloquial wisdom, “use it or lose it.”

Here is a list of 7 things you can do to avoid, or at least slow down, loss of mental function as you age:

1. Do something different: By avoiding routine, enjoy-

ing new sensory experiences and challenging your mind and body with new situations you keep your brain younger and more alert.

2. Lower your stress levels: There are lots of ways to do

ation techniques like meditation or deep breathing and eliminating people and situations in your life that overload you.

3. Exercise: Interval training (short, intense bursts of activity

with slightly longer breaks of less intense activity) increases oxygen to your brain and promotes brain growth factors. Even walking briskly will help.

4. Regularly challenge yourself: Make time to do puzzles, play games and give yourself interesting and demanding intellectual tasks. Learn a new language, play a musical instrument or take classes on subjects you are interested in. 5. Stay healthy: Eat a nutritious diet of whole, fresh and

natural foods (avoid processed, packaged foods), get plenty of sleep, avoid smoking, and if you use alcohol, drink in moderation.

6. Do things you love: Having fun is good for you! It

stimulates your thinking and keeps you focused when you immerse yourself in activities you enjoy.

7. Laugh out loud: Laughing releases the natural pain killers in your brain and triggers release of other memory-boosting substances into your system. It also sets off the “relaxation response” afterwards. And it’s fun! You might have noticed that all of these recommendations involve doing interesting, fun activities. As it turns out, when you are enjoying your life, your brain benefits from it! References: 1. www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_facts_figures.asp 2. www.nih.gov/news/pr/dec2006/nia-19.htm

WHAT

DID YOU SAY?

Partial Hearing Loss vs. “Deafness” By Michael LeMay, Au.D.

I

n most Audiology practices, the majority of patients seen are not “deaf.” Certainly, there are patients with severe to profound long-standing hearing impairment. These individuals may or may not use hearing aids and/or cochlear implants. If they do use such devices, benefits are often limited to providing sound awareness and help with lip reading. Primary communication is usually manual (sign language). What is by far more common is the patient with gradual onset of reduced hearing at some frequencies (pitches), but normal or near-normal hearing at other pitches. These patients are not deaf; they have the frustrating problem of being able to hear yet not understand speech clearly. They commonly report that some voices are easy to understand but many voices sound “muffled.”

Hearing a male news reporter on television may be no problem. Other voices, often female or children’s voices that are softer and higher pitched, may be very difficult to understand. The addition of background noise can be particularly bothersome. Patients commonly describe one-on-one conversation as no problem but struggle in groups or noisy environments. This “partial hearing loss” has usually occurred gradually over several years and may not be readily accepted or acknowledged as hearing loss. These patients are frequently described as hearing “what they want to hear.” They often complain that other people mumble. The site of the problem in this partial hearing loss is the sensitive outer hair cells in the cochlea (inner ear). These hair For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

cells can become damaged or worn out. Causes include noise exposure, illness, aging and heredity. Quite often, a combination of these factors comes into play. This problem is referred to as sensorineural hearing loss and accounts for 85 to 90 percent of adult hearing loss. The result is having difficulty distinguishing soft sounds at some frequencies. High-frequency sounds are usually affected first because of cochlear anatomy. The perception of loud sounds is usually not impaired. In fact, individuals with this type of hearing loss may be oversensitive to loud sounds compared to normal listeners. There is currently no medical or surgical treatment for gradual onset sensorineural hearing loss. There is preliminary research exploring the idea of hair cell regeneration. At the present time, these patients can be helped a great deal with sophisticated digital hearing instruments which are carefully programmed to amplify soft sounds, while at the same time being careful not to simply “make the whole world louder.” Noise reduction and directional microphone technology are utilized in these devices so that the ability to hear and understand in noisy environments can be improved considerably. •Cold Sores• By Brittany Russell

H

ealthy Beginnings Magazine received a request from our readers for information on and natural remedies for cold sores. With summer ending and cold sore season quickly approaching, we answered‌

What is a Cold Sore? Cold sores, or fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. Skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, sore, and some people experience more pain and discomfort than others. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both types can cause lip and mouth sores, as well as genital herpes. Having a cold sore on, in or near your mouth does not mean you have genital herpes. HSV usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It can be spread when a person touches the cold sore or its infected fluid – sharing utensils or kissing. Keep in mind, some people have the virus, but because they are not prone to cold sores or any other symptoms, they may not realize they are a carrier. HSV cannot be cured – after you are infected,

the virus stays in your system for the rest of your life. Symptoms may begin with pain around your mouth and on your lips, a fever, a sore throat or swollen glands in your neck or other parts of the body. If just having the sore isn’t bad enough, it may break open, leak fluid, then scab over – they take anywhere between a few days to 2 weeks to heal. Cold sores will usually heal on their own with a little time, but if they are causing excessive pain or making you feel embarassed, treatment is available. Treatments include skin creams, oitments or sometimes pills. They may only reduce the appearance of the blister by one or 2 days, but they may be more beneficial if you are experiencing discomfort.

Ways to Avoid a Cold Sore • Avoid coming into contact with infected fluids, such as the saliva of an infected person. • Use your own eating utensils, drinking cups and avoid using other items that a person with a cold sore may have used. • Stress, a cold or flu may trigger a cold sore. • Use lip balm and sunscreen – too much sunlight can cause a sore to flare. • If you have a cold sore, wash your hands often and try not to touch your sore.

Natural Remedies Lysine, an essential amino acid, is used to make protein, which we need to produce infection-fighting antibodies, enzymes, hormones and body tissues. Food sources high in lysine include red meat, milk, eggs, cheese, wheat germ, brewers yeast and fish. Lysine supplements (about 1,000 mg three times per

day) may shorten the duration of the cold sore. Lysine ointment, in a pilot study by the Southern California University 30 people, demonstrated full resolution by the third day in 40 percent of the participants, and in 87 percent by the sixth day. Lemon Balm contains antiviral properties – used on a regular basis, it may decrease the frequency of recurrences. Resveratrol, a compound found naturally in red grapes, has been shown to be active against the herpes simplex virus in laboratory studies. A study by the Northeastern Ohio University demonstrated that resveratrol cream applied topically two, three, or five times a day effectively suppressed cold sore development if it was applied one or 6 hours after infection with the herpes virus. Other remedies proven in various studies to be active against HSV are Echinacea, Black Currant , Rhubarb with sage cream and Self-Heal (Prunella Vulgaris).

101 SUPPLEMENTS

Potassium By Rita Shurtliff

W

e have all heard that minerals are vital for a healthy body. But knowing which mineral to take to ensure optimum health can be confusing. There are so many minerals, all of which have benefits. Let us consider one mineral that is a basic necessity

sium (and alkalai) intake by eating more fruits and vegetables, or by taking potassium bicarbonate supplements, has been found to decrease urinary calcium excretion. The reverse, potassium deprivation, has also been found to increase urinary calcium excretion.

– Potassium.

A more common issue that may arise due to potassium deficiency is leg cramping, or “charley horse.” Because electrolyte imbalances can cause cramping, some blood may be analyzed to ensure the levels of potassium and other electrolytes are normal.

Potassium is an essential dietary mineral and electrolyte. The term electrolyte refers to a substance that dissociates into ions (charged particles) in solution, making it capable of conducting electricity. Normal body function depends on tight regulation of potassium concentrations both inside and outside of cells. Healthy skin, your physical and mental well-being are also dependent on the correct fluid balance of sodium and potassium. Potassium is the principal positively charged ion in the fluid inside of cells, while sodium is the principal in the fluid outside of cells. Potassium concentrations are about 30 times higher inside than outside cells, while sodium concentrations are more than ten times lower inside than outside cells.

Supplementing your diet with potassium can help minimize the occurrence of many health challenges. It is important to check the labels to be sure that you are getting high quality minerals. Considissue that may ering whether to take pills, capsules or liquid minerals is crucial in order to to potassium ensure your body will absorb and use the mineral for its intended benefit.

A common arise due deficiency is leg cramping, or “charley horse.”

How does potassium help keep your body healthy? In a prospective study of dietary potassium intake, 43,000 men were followed for eight years. The study found that men in the top 1/5th of median potassium intake, 4,300 mg per day, were only 62 percent as likely to have a stroke than those in the lower 1/5th median potassium intake, 2,400 mg per day. At least four cross-sectional studies have reported significant positive associations between dietary potassium intake and bone mineral density (BMD) in populations of premenopausal, perimenopausal, and postmenopausal women, as well as elderly men. Abnormally high urinary calcium (hypercalciuria) increases the risk of developing kidney stones. Increasing dietary potas-

It’s Our Playground...

Let’s Use It! By Sara Piccola

T

he Greater Reno-Tahoe area attracts two million visitors per year with up to 200,000 visitors per day during peak-season. People travel from all over the world to Northern Nevada and the Lake Tahoe region to experience “America’s Playground.” Many people envy those of us that live in this incredible area where we have four seasons to enjoy outdoor activities: biking, boating, camping, hiking, rock climbing, skiing and a variety of cultural and nightlife activities. Over the next couple of issues, we will recommend several outings for a great “staycation” right here in our neighborhood. This month, trade four wheels for two and enjoy these biking adventures for the whole family to share.

Bike along the Truckee: Adults and kids can join in on

this easy five mile ride. This path begins at the base of Squaw Valley, follows the Truckee River and ends at Tahoe City. If you don’t have a car parked there, be prepared to take the five miles back to Squaw.

mellow miles and will take you through a wetland wildlife area and a peaceful forested section. For the more daring, there is a side path up to Fallen Leaf Lake.

Tahoe Rim Trail: The Tahoe Rim Trail provides 130 miles of

biking adventure. You can enter the trail on Highway 89 at the Big Meadows Parking lot, or at the end of Andrea located off Kingsbury Grade (Nevada Highway 207) and North Benjamin. There are many options for beginning this ride. Some parts are for the more experienced riders, so do your research ahead of time.

Dry Pond Loop: Timberline Road off of Mt. Rose Highway will lead you to the parking lot for the Dry Pond/Thomas Creek ride. There are numerous trail heads from this starting point, all providing the wonderful feeling of being one with nature. It’s no secret that there are hundreds of mountain biking and road cycling trails in the area. With winter shortly around the corner, this is the perfect month to enjoy some last minute bike rides. Always research the difficulty level of a ride before you embark, but most importantly enjoy “America’s Playground.” After all, it’s in your backyard! othing is created without vision, and it may be becoming a lost art. Whose vision is creating your reality…yours, your parents, or society? Many of us are not encouraged to use our Psychic/intuitive skills, which is merely the ability to tap into our inner voice. Our inner voice is all knowing, it is the voice to trust, our gut telling us what is right. When we discount our inner voice we lose touch with who we really are. Dreaming can be an extension of our conscious and subconscious inner voice. Dreaming is the energy flow of “pictures” or mental images that fuel your physical reality. It is the communication from you as Spirit to you as Body. It is your directive to yourself as to your Soul purpose, and motivation for action to create the reality you envision. Spirit is a funny thing: you can’t see it, touch it, taste it, spend it. If you

pretend it doesn’t exist, it might not. If it doesn’t, who will you be when you are no longer your body? Spirit is something you cannot be without because then you are nothing. You are more than your sex drive, your desire to eat, your ambitions for bigger and better things, your fear of pain. If you as Spirit don’t direct your life, what will? Your body has legitimate programming to preserve itself so you can create as Spirit through it. On its own, your body has no perspective, no wisdom, it is an out-of-control wanting machine. When you Dream, you see what your larger purpose is about. You set a vision to strive to rise above the needs of the physical you. You become more than yourself and this makes human life a thing of beauty, Heaven on Earth. If you don’t create the pictures to fuel your journey, someone else will. Who are you allowing to do that for you right now?

FITNESS

Classic Pilates: What’s the Difference?

By Kimberly A. Lenzi, Ph.D.

P

ilates, named after Joseph Hubertus Pilates, has become a mainstream international fitness program and a household word within the last ten years. When Joseph died in 1967, the exercise method was just beginning to gain popularity. Until then, the Pilates Method, which at that time was called Contrology, was a well kept secret sought out by dancers, wealthy aristocrats, and Hollywood’s elite. The Pilates machines (not just the reformer, which is the more commonly known of all the machines) were designed originally to aid rheumatic patients during WWI. Joe, as he liked to be called, explained, “I thought, why use my strength? So I made a machine to do it for me. Look, you see it resists your movements in just the right way so those inner muscles really have to work against it. That way you can concentrate on movement. You must always do it slowly and smoothly. Then your whole body is in it.” Today, almost every fitness facility across the nation offers Pilates classes.

Not all Pilates’ classes are created equal. After a four year legal battle ending in the year 2000, the term Pilates was ruled to be a generic term for an exercise method. The decision to revoke the Pilates trademark was a huge victory. Until this time even instructors trained under Joe himself could not use the term Pilates, but were forced to explain their teachings as “Pilates based” or “inspired by the methods of Joseph Pilates.” Thanks to the ruling from this lawsuit, qualified studios and instructors are now able to use the Pilates name without legal or monetary repercussion. The downside resulting from this decision is that now Pilates is a generic term, any novel form of exercise that combines a few Pilates’ moves or that simply incorporates some of the Pilates principles can be called Pilates. In the last eight years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of programs claiming to offer certification in the Pilates Method, and several of these may be completed in a

weekend. What the general public does not typically realize is that the Pilates Method taught the way Joseph intended is a sophisticated science and in order to teach this Method properly it takes time to study and practice. Joseph said, “The only unchanging rules you must conscientiously obey is that you must always faithfully and without deviation follow the instructions accompanying the exercise and always keep your mind wholly concentrated on the purpose of the exercises as you perform them.” Another issue that arose from the 2000 Pilates Trademark decision is that anyone can brand the Pilates name on exercise equipment, even if the equipment does not resemble or function similarly to the original designs. The equipment developed by Joseph and used in Pilates are complex pieces that if designed and used accurately will enable the core muscles of the body to wrap around the spine, creating length and ultimately protecting the vertebrae. There are several manufacturers that have produced wonderful pieces of equipment. As first generation Pilates instructor Romana Kryzanowska, a protégée of Joseph himself, states, “Gratz is an undeniable part of Pilates history, having built Universal Reformers to Joseph Pilates’ rigorous specifications. No other Pilates apparatus feels as good, lasts as long, or preserves the Pilates Method as safely and authentically as Gratz.” The Classic Pilates Method (Traditional or True Pilates) practices the exercises developed by and performed the way Joseph Pilates intended. The exercises are not altered or invented by the practitioner for the client. However, that is not to say that one client’s exercises are exactly the same as another, or that there are no modifications for the exercises. The

September 2008

genius of the Pilates Method is that exercises are prescribed according to the particular strengths and weaknesses of the client. Classically trained instructors should be able to locate the weak areas and design a regiment to strengthen those and thus, the body as a whole. The Matwork consists of 34 Contrology exercises, which are the stepping-stones to a healthy body. Several modern studios and instructors teach these exercises differently, claiming that the original exercises are too difficult. There are even instructors that claim to teach Pilates that have never studied or even tried to perform the original exercises. In his book “Pilates’ Return to Life Through Contrology,” Joseph emphasizes the importance of accurately performing these exercises, “follow instructions exactly as indicated down to the very smallest detail. There is a reason! Contrology is not a system of haphazard exercises designed to produce only bulging muscles. To the contrary, it was conceived and tested with the idea of properly and scientifically exercising every muscle in your body in order to improve the circulation of the blood so that the bloodstream will carry more and better blood to feed every fiber and tissue of your body.” The Classic Pilates Method uses specific machines and the Matwork to train clients. Results of the classic method include a more uniformly developed body, increased strength and flexibility, improved body awareness and postures, and decreases in joint and back pain. When looking for a Pilates studio, instructor, or class, you may want to ask some questions. It is up to you to do your research. Here are a few guideline questions to get you started: What type of Pilates is taught at this studio? How long have your instructors been studying the Pilates Method? Where and with whom have your instructors trained? How many hours, personally, have your instructors trained on each piece of equipment they teach? References: 1. Monthly Health Outlook:

THE SUN IN

VIRGO By Robert Ayres

he Sun entered Virgo on August 20. This is the last month of the summer season. The heat is stimulating – it enlivens and animates the spirit. This should manifest as motivation to improve our lives. Virgo is The Virgin, which symbolizes purity. Out of all the signs of the zodiac, Virgo is the one that rules health and healing. Virgos tend to be more concerned with cleanliness, orderliness, and health; now is the time to focus on improving these elements. When this is taken to a negative extreme, the result is the hypochondriac. The key is balance. Virgo specifically rules the processes of cleansing and purification. The human body has built-in systems to release

toxins and pollutants. Systems work better when they are not fouled by the death principle. The life principle is in a constant battle with the death principle, or as physics describes it, the law of entropy. The intestines are the primary organ for the elimination of toxins from the body. Now is a perfect time to have a focused regimen of cleansing the body. Fasting, diet, liver cleanse, sauna, hot mineral springs, colonics, massage, etc. bring very significant results at this time. The planetary ruler of Virgo is Mercury, the planet of mind. At a more spiritual level, the need is to cleanse and purify our thinking. This addresses the fundamental issue of human nature. The word “man” is derived from the Sanskrit word manas, which means “to think.” The essence of humanity is that we are thinking beings. As we think, so we are. This forms the basis of our being. The keyword for Mercury is to think. Esoterically, there is a direct connection between the brain and the intestines. The health of our excretory system has a subtle but profound effect on the development of higher states of consciousness.

If our thinking is not aligned with divine thinking, then our life is out of harmony with nature. This disharmony will result in disease and ill health. When we observe the state of health of the American populace and the trillions of dollars spent each year on health care, we must conclude that something is seriously wrong. The true source of health is based in purity of thought, the primary principle of Virgo. Cleansing and purifying our minds of untruth and ignorance is the true goal. The quest for truth and living it in every thought, feeling, and action should be a priority. Placing value on honesty and truthfulness in our lives and demanding it of others is a prerequisite for the achievement of true health. It is very important to live one’s life where personal integrity is of the utmost importance. The archetype of Virgo is that of the teacher/healer. We teach each other most profoundly through example. Knowing and living truth is a powerful support for health. It is time to consciously align our lives with the rhythms and cycles of nature. traumas and cumulative life stress are soothed and smoothed by a process that rearranges your emotional landscape. So what is it? It’s called Acupressure, and it consists of simply tapping or holding a pattern (protocol) of a few specific acupressure points. This quickly provides relief from the intensity of emotionally distressing events. Even the shortest protocol (involving only 4 acupoints) is well suited for both everyday traumas and the most acutely stressful events. If the issue being treated involves significant anger or sadness, then an additional number of treatment points sometimes work better, but those protocols are also short and easy to learn. There are four major patterns: 4-point, 8-point, 12-point and 16-point. These are “evidence-based” treatment points, acupoints which have been the subject of research at some of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning, including Harvard Medical School and the Yale University School of Medicine. These acupoints have been shown to produce profound calming effects which include:

1) Reduction in blood flow to the brain’s alarm center, producing a relaxation reflex at a deep brain level

This rapid-emotional-healing type of acupressure creates interventions that can produce startling results because it is a rapid and effective treatment tool that can reach and soothe the part of the brain that is only minimally accessible by language. That’s wonderful news for people who have constant intrusive thoughts regarding frightening, shameful or embarrassing memories. Also, some people suffer from recurring neg-attacks (chronic negative thoughts about oneself or others). These simple acupressure protocols can neutralize the emotional charge on those memories and bring about relief. Right now, many people are dealing with increased financial security issues,

3) Calming in the electrical activity of the brain

These changes in the brain and body have been documented with sophisticated medical instruments including the MRI, EEG, Bispectral Index, and the ECG that measures heart rate variability. Reductions in emotional distress have been documented with psychological testing immediately after the use of the above-described acupressure.

WHOLE BRAIN Thinking By Janie Beach

I

n 1954 Dr. John C. Lilly, a pioneer in brain and behavioral research studies, began experimenting with the concept of restricting the amount of external sensory stimuli to the brain. When he built his first isolation environment, he was determined to prove that the brain, without environmental input, would simply go to sleep. Using himself as the subject in experiments, he learned the opposite was true. By removing all visual, acoustical, tactile and temperature stimuli, Dr. Lilly found that the brain continues to function independently and at even higher levels than normal. Digestive Boost

T

his tropical cleanser contains 100 percent fruit. It will help the kidneys and help boost, making your eyes sparkle, your hair shine and your skin glow. For the best results, use especially ripe fruit, other wise the juice may be sharp and flavorless. If the fruit is not quite ripe when you buy it, leave it at room temperature for a day or two before juicing. If you like your juices well chilled, serve with plenty of crushed ice. Makes one glass: You will need: ½ pineapple, peeled 1 small mango, peeled and pitted ½ small papaya, seeded and peeled

1. Remove any “eyes” left in the pineapple, then cut all the fruit into rough chunks. Using a juice extractor, juice all of the fruit. 2. Alternatively, use a food processor blender and process for 2-3 minutes until very smooth. Pour into a glass and serve immediately. Cook’s tip: Pineapple and mango can produce a very thick juice when blended. You might want to thin it down with a little mineral water before serving. Tomato Basil Soup You will need: 2 cups tomatoes 2 sweet red bell peppers Juice from 1 lime ½ cup soaked almonds 1 cup fresh basil 1 Tbs. Nama Shoyu or Wheat Free Tamari 2 Tbs. Agave Nectar Salt to taste • Blend all ingredients together in a blender until warm. Cook’s note: This reminds me of Campbell’s soup! Basil Banana Smoothie You will need: 2 ripe bananas, peeled, chopped 10-12 basil leaves ¼ cup filtered water 2 Tbs. Agave • Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Chill for an hour or serve immediately. For more info, contact Rawjuvenation at (775) 750-1345 or rochellefahlgren@hotmail.com. Specializing in raw food cuisine. Go to ad on page 34.

HEALTHY

PETS

DOG, meet Dog

B

ringing home a new puppy is an exciting experience! The puppy is excited, you are excited, but what about your older dog? You remember, the one who has been an only dog for years. It can be done, and fairly effortlessly at that. Dogs, for all their domesticity, still have a pack mentality. You, of course, are the alpha, or head dog. Your older dog will be the beta, or second in command. When bringing a new dog into the pack, your established dog may feel threatened. Be mindful of this. While you do want your newest addition to feel loved and welcome, you also want your older dog to know that it is still loved and its position in the household is secure. There are a variety of things you can do to make this transition from a one dog to a two dog-home go smoothly. Go slowly. This is a brand new place for your puppy and a new situation for your older dog. Don’t rush them into a relationship. Let the puppy explore. Allow them to get acquainted. Stay in close proximity when the dogs are just getting to know each other. Sometimes fights do break out and you won’t want either dog injured.

For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

Spend quality time with each dog separately. This allows you to bond with your puppy and also shows your older dog that it is still an important part of your life. A caution here: don’t spend all of your time with them in separate situations. This may breed jealousy and ill will between dogs. Play is important. Play with your dogs separately and also have playtime together. Make sure they have plenty of toys and chew toys. Once they begin having fun, it won’t be long until they are playing together and you are the one left out! Reward good behavior. Remember, this is a new situation for both dogs. Reward them with playtime or treats so they know that they are moving in the right direction. This all may sound like a lot of work, but it truly isn’t. Once your dogs develop a relationship, your diligence will be awarded with twice the love! Nikola Marshall lives in Oklahoma with her Boston Terrier and Chihuahua. She enjoys spending time with her dogs, scrap booking, reading and volunteering. This article has been submitted in affiliation with http://www.PetLovers.Com/ which is a site for Pet Forums.
