It is fitting that a natural health magazine takes into account the spiritual and supernatural realm of our existence. The medical community, whether it be allopathic or holistic has long applauded spiritual

ur cover for April offers a few different connotations to its meaning. The first, well, it’s April and the arrival of Easter nears, therefore the picture depicts our natural tendency to throw a few eggs on our cover. The second is the “feeling” one might get from viewing the picture. They are not standard “Easter eggs,” but rather a group of brown, earthy and natural looking eggs. Again, tying into April’s general theme of “being good to our earth” month. The third, a slight deviation from an off-the-cuff derived meaning. It’s a little cliche…but, it ties into spirituality: The Good Egg (or Good Son).

Faith, and a strong belief in one’s savior to healing a multitude of health calamities. Faith is believing in what is not seen, like my belief in the love of Jesus Christ who came to save the world.

It saddens me to think that Christian spirituality has been reduced to Easter egg hunts within our media and schools. Political Correctness has eroded the backbone of our country and its individuals, in taking away the right to speak our mind respectfully. However, the media and Hollywood continues to parade violence, soft porn and profanities as if it is common place to all eyes and ears. I for one am sick of it.

Before colorful eggs and chocolate bunnies, there was a celebration of rebirth. Before someone decided that April would be the perfect month to celebrate our beautiful world, there was rebirth of grass, flowers and trees. Before eggs were a symbol of Easter, intelligence and ideas, they were simple vessels, meant to carry the miraculous energy and matter that would soon turn into a new creation.

Healthy Beginnings Magazine is committed to reporting natural health options and information that will help in building a stronger spiritual being. We believe in helping one another, not by giving a hand out, but by giving a hand up. You will find this month to be busting at the seams with informational articles on ways to naturally treat health concerns, as well as ways to build a stronger inner being.

Simple vessel, miraculous energy and rebirth…It seems to me, the themes actually tie together after all.

Help your trees survive the drought!

Given the extremely low amount of precipitation the Reno area has received thus far this winter, trees are under duress. Dead trees can become a public safety concern for residents, children and vehicles traveling on public streets. When a tree poses such a hazard, the owner is required to remove the tree, which often can cost thousands of dollars; it is far less expensive to keep the tree alive by watering it on a regular basis.

• Be Water Wise – Follow the Truckee Meadows Water Authority’s (TMWA) assigned watering days. Drip irrigation and garden hoses can be used any day. When watering lawns, set timers so that spray heads do not allow excess water to run into the street and down storm drains. Always check for leaks and make necessary repairs.

• Winter Watering – Before shutting down your irrigation system in late fall, be sure to give trees extra water by increasing cycles and/or run times. Better yet, give your trees a slow, deep soaking with a hose several times for a week or two. Large trees should be watered beneath the entire “drip zone,” which is the area the branches spread to. Drag out the garden hose, or turn on your irrigation system at least twice during the winter. March is an optimal time to water as some trees are already beginning to bud and flower. Remember to drain your irrigation system to prevent overnight freezing.

Following are some helpful hints: • Summer Watering – Water young trees twice a week using five to 10 gallons of water depending on the exposure and nearby trees, which may provide shade. Mature trees should be watered once a week to the equivalent of about 50 gallons of water. If trees are growing in a turf area, provide occasional additional water using a garden hose as described above.

• Drip Irrigation – Regularly check for leaks, clogged lines and emitters. Add extra emitters as your trees grow, and make sure that they are spread out beneath the entire drip line and spaced every few feet apart so that all soil areas beneath the canopy are wet.

• Add Wood Chip Mulch – The mulch should be two to four inches deep over root systems to keep the soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Do not pile mulch against tree trunks.

What experiences have influenced your definition?

I realized that while I couldn’t make anyone else happy, I could influence their ability to experience happiness through humor, storytelling or even being the one that encouraged them to take a risk and go after something they desired. Once they had the breakthrough, their joy, happiness and high thoughts about themselves, was infectious. I became overwhelmed with joy by witnessing their joy.

Define happiness as an adult?

I

Today, happiness comes from the sound of laughter. I had this epiphany a few years ago. I was at a party with two dear friends.

One of them had lost her daughter to suicide several months earlier. The other had lost her son a few years before that.

Suddenly, from the other room, I heard my friend Vera laughing. It was a spontaneous outburst of uncontrolled laugher. I remember thinking, “Wow, she’s happy again.” It was the sweetest sound I ever heard; her laughter made me happy. My epiphany was that even when depressed one could have moments of happiness, and that was a tremendous learning experience.

How Do You Define Happiness?

Do you think the definition of happiness will change for future generations?

was recently asked to respond to five questions pertaining to happiness. I thought my answers would be short and sweet; however once I started to write, I realized that my answers were very insightful. I am sharing my answers with you. After you read my responses, I invite you to answer the questions for yourself.

Short term happiness perhaps. There’s always some new gadget offering the latest cutting edge technology that will satisfy the urge within us. Making our little “id” happy. However, I think it’s only in the later years of one’s life that we come to learn that a sustaining feeling of happiness can only come from endeavoring to make someone else (that we love) happy first, before our own needs. It is only then we will know true happiness.

What did happiness mean to you as a child?

As a child, happiness for me was spending any time at all with my older brother. I loved going on “drives” with him. He would take me to the “drive-in,” and tell me stories. However, my first experience with what I call “pure happiness” was during the cold winter nights. My brother would place a blanket over the heat register to warm it up. (He was 13 and I was 2 years old). Once warm, he would wrap me in the warm blanket and carry me up to bed each night. That to me was a pure experience of happiness.

Were you disappointed when your expectations of happiness did not satisfy you?

Yes, my “expectations,” especially as a child, was that my brother would always be there. When he went away to college, I would anticipate the fun that we would have when he would come home for school breaks. He was always glad to see me, but would soon dash off to spend time with his buddies or girlfriend. It was the first time I remember feeling “hurt and disappointment.” This persisted right up to his wedding day. I wanted to go live with them--my parents had other ideas. I experienced grief for the first time immediately following their wedding.

Meditation & Prayer TLC for your heart & brain Written By Ashail Ross

M

editation and prayer has been around for thousands of years. According to 101 Questions & Answers on Prayer, “Anthropologists have found evidence of prayer even among Neanderthals.” And that the first record of prayer was recorded in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The Epic of Gilgamesh is an ancient Babylonian poem from roughly 2750 BCE written on a series of tablets.

The lateral prefrontal cortex modulates the emotional responses we have. This part of the brain also perceives how people can look at things from a logical level. The medial prefrontal cortex has two sections it uses. The ventromedial medial prefrontal cortex allows us to process our view of people and how we react to others. The other section, the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, is what allows us to empathize. The insula is what gives people their “gut feelings” and the amygdala is what runs the fear center, also known as what controls our “fight or flight” response.

Prayer and meditation is fundamental in many ways, it has been shown that people who pray or meditate actually have less stress than people who don’t. This could be because prayer and meditation increase positivity. Also, one hour of meditation is shown to be as beneficial as one hour of sleep. During meditation, a person takes deep breaths. Oxygen travels to the parts of the lungs where the most blood is found. Despite this, the body actually intakes less oxygen, which creates the relaxed state of meditation.

Meditation also increases immunity, emotional balance, fertility and calmness. It relieves irritable bowel syndrome, and lowers blood pressure. These are some of the benefits that meditation can provide. One of the better perks of meditation: it is considered to be anti-inflammatory. Meditation is such a relaxed state, it helps prevent and treat symptoms by switching off the stress response. This is because stress is a key factor in inflammation, which is linked to heart disease, arthritis, asthma and various skin conditions.

A major factor in both is brainwaves. There are five different types of brainwaves: alpha, beta, delta, theta and gamma.

Beta brainwaves are the brainwaves people experience going through an average day. While brain waves such as alpha, theta and delta are most occupant when meditating. Alpha brainwaves focus on “being in the present” and is considered a state of resting.

Prayer, however, affects the heart and brain differently. Prayer has just as many benefits as meditation; this includes relaxation responses, secondary control, positive feelings and spiritual connection. The relaxation response lowers factors that are increased by stress. Meanwhile, secondary control brings the idea of letting go to something greater, this releases the person from being in charge.

Theta brainwaves go farther than alpha brainwaves, acting as a gateway to memory and learning. However, delta brainwaves are when someone enters a deep sleep, or one of the deepest forms of meditation. Slow and the loudest of brainwaves, it is when the body begins the healing process. Parts of the brain that are affected by meditation are the lateral prefrontal cortex, the medial prefrontal cortex, the insula and the amygdala.

Spiritual connection uplifts a person’s behavior. This can make someone feel loved and wanted. Prayer can release cortisol and other hormones. This speeds up the healing process. However, there was a study done in 2005 titled, Study of the Therapeutic Effects of Intercessory Prayer, in this study they tested three

groups with intercessory prayer and the effects it had on people undergoing a coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Dr. Abey is also at the forefront of bringing back ancient methods of farming, and instilling the once-lost traditions and worthiness for all farmers. He provides opportunities for them to participate in harvesting 2000 year-old ancient varieties of rice that have been hidden for over hundreds of years.

In group one, people were informed they would receive intercessory prayer, but were then informed they may or may not receive it. Group two didn’t receive prayer, but they were also told they may or may not receive it. While group three received prayer and were all told they would receive prayer.

Prayer went on for fourteen days, starting the night before the surgery.

He is implementing this toxic-free process for today’s farmers, and is able to present this process to other countries so they too may gain prosperity while providing a healthy diet, gaining confidence and independence.

The findings were, “Intercessory prayer itself had no effect on complication-free recovery from CABG, but certainty of receiving intercessory prayer was associated with a higher incidence of complications.” Interestingly the study found that, “patients who were certain that intercessors would pray for them had a higher rate of complications than patients who were uncertain but did receive intercessory prayer.”

It is his particular concern to evoke a feeling of value and appreciation in people for fundamental life-giving and lifesustaining principles regarding ourselves, others and our natural and spiritual resources--only in this way can we successfully master the global challenges of the 21st century.

With regard to this, meditation is a focus on oneself to become healthier. Prayer can be for oneself or another. With this in mind, prayer gives thoughts and well wishes, meditation is putting a person in a calm state of mind. Still, meditation and prayer leave a person feeling positive and calm. They both provide a healing presence, which can bring a sense of stability to others. This can create a placebo-like state of mind, altering a person’s outlook and expectations, which can positively impact their health. In general, positive feelings are healthy, and the power of belief has a strong impact as well.

Gluten Sensitivity: Pearls of Wisdom

s little as five years ago when we advised a patient to remove gluten from their diet, most people still had not even heard of it. Testing was poor (and still is). The medical community criticized us, and even extremely sick patients were difficult to convince of the need to eliminate this highly inflammatory protein from their diets. Today, there are some in the healthcare community who still think it is a fad. It’s not. Even Dr. Oz is all over it now, so it must be a real problem. And it is. Yet, there is still much, too much confusion about the gluten issue. I thought it would be fun, and beneficial, to share some of the clinical pearls we utilize in our recommendations on short-term or permanent gluten removal from a patient’s diet.

• Gluten is the main protein found in wheat, and wheat-like grains including spelt, rye, barley, triticale and some oats.

• Gluten is the most common food allergen for people with Hashimoto’s thyroid, an autoimmune disorder, because the molecular structure of gluten so closely resembles that of the thyroid gland and may get attacked due to mistaken identities.

• The word gluten is actually a misnomer, as it is the gliadin portion of the gluten that causes immune reactions.

• If you get completely off gluten, and feel improvement in your “stomach,” brain, or join and muscle symptoms, know that it is only the tip of the iceberg indicating other probable food allergies (particularly other grains), cross sensitivities, and almost certainly the dreaded “Leaky Gut.”

• Of Gluten intolerance/Celiac genes are triggered and gluten must be avoided through life 24/7.

• There are many tests for gluten intolerance and Celiac and none of them are 100 percent specific or 100 percent sensitive.

Genetic testing for the HLADQ genes is the best lab test, but still not perfect. Best test that we have found, bar none, is doing an elimination/provocation diet. It is accurate, and cost effective.

• Biopsies that are negative do not mean you don’t have gluten intolerances or Celiac. They are not the gold standard diagnostic tool they are presented to be.

• If you are intolerant to gluten and you have gut, skin, respiratory tract, joint, or brain issues due to it, eating “just a little bit” is not ok since even a small amount will cause irreversible damage to the tissue being attacked, even if the exposure does not produce symptoms.

• Exposure to gluten just one time can effect and damage your tissues for four days, four weeks, or four months depending on your level of sensitivity. So no “gluten partying” on Saturday night.

• Keep it simple. If you eat gluten and you notice any of your symptoms seem worse--stop eating it, no matter what the tests say.

Hopefully this helps if you’re on the fence or struggling with the “to eat or not to eat” gluten issue.

t goes without saying that excitement is one of the highest vibrational frequencies we can experience. It’s right up there with love, joy, empowerment and appreciation. The emotion (energy in motion) of excitement can lead us on a joyful path of learning more about what our real purpose is in this life.

As we act, at any given moment, on the thing that excites us the most, we are open to being automatically aligned and synchronized with everything we need. We start to see things that have always been there but couldn’t see. That’s because when we’re focused in a negative way, opportunities are invisible to us. They might be right in front of us, but we literally don’t see them.

realize they are just different manifestations of the same one most exciting thing. This excitement attracts opportunities into your life. As you attract more and more opportunities, and as you create the ability to act upon them, to trust your intuition and to follow your dreams, you may reach a point where all of a sudden you will shift from attracting opportunities to being expected to create the opportunities.

You’re not just waiting for them to come any more; you’re using your full creativity to invent, to intuit and to manifest the opportunity that you can act upon. You are building the next step before you even try to take the step. You are looking at things in a different way than you ever looked at them before.

You are seeing the ability to create an opportunity out of nothing…not only for yourself, but for everyone who’s involved in the connection. You are creating what your imagination is most strongly and magnetically attracted to.

Sometimes, two or more situations will present themselves that you may be equally excited about doing. Always act on the one that has the highest degree of ability to be acted upon in this moment. As you see more than one thing that excites you equally, that’s a clue that there might be an all-encompassing category into which these things fall. If taken together, you may

No one else lives your life. YOU get to choose your daily actions. We are so free, we can choose bondage. Many do, but we don’t have to. Wake up and choose joy. Follow your excitement and watch your attitude, your opportunities, your finances and your health dramatically change for the better.

eople afflicted with gout, an extremely painful inflammation that frequently causes red and swollen big toe joints, can look for some new avenues of relief. Gout, which is an accumulation of uric acid in the joints, has typically been treated with drugs and diet designed to remove uric acid from the body and avoid making more uric acid. The diet restricts meat and shellfish and is aggravated by alcohol, high fructose corn syrup, table sugar, obesity and acidosis (an overly acid condition in the body).

is measure on the pH scale from 0 to 14, with 0 being very acid and 14 very alkaline. Uric acid can be flushed from the body by consuming alkaline substances. The least expensive treatment: three to four TBS of baking soda in water over four to six hours (preferably at night) can relieve gout in a day. We have been using our sexy, German (more physiological baking soda), Nema Base. It is composed of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium bicarbonates. In addition, consuming a new alkaline solution called pHenomenal water, with a pH of 13.5 diluted in water to 11.5 pH, through the day is a great adjunct to alkalinizing the body quickly. This solution is great for helping patients with MRSA bacterial infections as well. It is also good to check the first morning urine pH with pH paper. It should run over 6 to 6.5 pH to start getting the body alkaline.

A long time patient recently asked me to write an article on gout because so many of his male friends were having recurrent gout problems. There are also genetic issues, lifestyle and concurrent illness issues that can promote gout. Standard treatments employ non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Indocin, and anti-uric acid drugs such as colchicine (also used homeopathically), and for chronic gout: allopurinol.

Vitamin C is a valuable ally to treat gout, as is coffee (not tea) and anti-inflammatory enzymes such as bromelains from the pineapple plant and pancreatic enzymes such as Marcozymes, Wobenzymes or any commercial enzyme products taken away from meals, so that it doesn’t just digest food. Other antiinflammatory herbs such as Turmeric and Boswellia also help gouty inflammation.

eliminates many toxic acid wastes through the kidneys and can overburden them in a compromised individual.

A couple of years ago, a 54-year-old ex-marine was hopping down the hall on one leg, with his girlfriend supporting him as he leaned on her shoulder to walk. He had severe recurrent gout in one foot, with a normal blood uric acid of only 4 mg/ dl--the normal levels were 2.5 to 7.1 (not at all high). A

nalytical thinking is the backbone of science and a key attribute setting us apart from other animals. The gifts it has provided us impact every aspect of our lives, from the food we eat to how we communicate and travel. But there is a dark side to our love affair with the analytical mind. When we analyze, we cut things into pieces. We use observation and logic to dissect them into their component parts. We examine how each affects the other; we link causes and effects. But with so much breaking down, so much dissection, it can be hard to put things back together. We come to see the parts and their immediate relationships, but in so doing, we often lose sight of the whole. The animating spirit gets lost when we relate to things as objects, seeing only through the eye of the logical, discriminating mind.

Patricia is a middle-aged woman who suffers from a variety of medical issues including diabetes, hypothyroidism, chronic pain, gum and sinus infections, anxiety, depression, and a history of stroke. All of these conditions, potentially serious by themselves, are even more challenging to treat when they are combined. Changes in mood, for example, can profoundly

impact blood sugar levels. Erratic blood sugar levels, in turn, affect the body’s ability to fight infection. Hypothyroidism contributes to depression. Depression suppresses the immune system. And the list goes on.

Patricia had several physicians who each managed a different aspect of her health. But, despite the occasional information passed between these professionals, none saw the big picture.

Not really knowing her body, and the effects of her mood upon her body, their recommendations were frequently off the mark. For example, insulin dosages prescribed according to a general formula would typically over- or under-shoot her specific needs. Managing her diabetes was like trying to shoot an arrow at a falling leaf on a windy day. Even if they had all gotten together to discuss her case, they would likely still miss the whole. This is because the basic orientation of western medicine is to suppress and banish symptoms rather than see them as symbolic and purposive messages from the larger psyche.

This situation was compounded by the fact that Patricia was herself too analytical in her orientation to life and the needs

of her body. She forced herself to do things according to a prescribed time schedule rather than the internal cues of her body and instincts. Most importantly, Patricia would too-readily turn to medications to manage her anxiety or depression symptoms rather than work with her symptoms to better understand her unconscious feelings, fears, or conflicts. Her physicians would get frustrated with her because her illnesses would not respond to their treatments, and she would get angry with herself and her body because it wouldn’t do what she wanted it to do. Over time her list of medications just grew for the side effects of one would lead to the prescription of yet another. Ironically, the more that she and her doctors tried to control and strong-arm her illnesses and moods, the more out-of-control her symptoms became.

I fully understood the concept of cutting up the bear but I kept repeating “you get the whole bear?” People kept turning to me and saying “yes.” Finally one clear voice said, “Yes, Patricia, you get the whole bear.” I kept repeating the phrase because while I understood that the bear was mine, I was absolutely incredulous. It had never occurred to me that the bear was all mine. It was mine. Not my family’s, or society’s, or any institution’s. It was mine to do with what I pleased. I could reject it or accept it, but as long as I behaved in the manner in which I was ultimately meant to (i.e., spiritually, honestly, peacefully) I could easily access the bear. If I veered off my path, the bear would be less accessible. I had been so busy trying to manage pieces of the bear, I never saw it for what it was. I didn’t need to manage pieces of the bear, I was ready for the whole thing.

The complexity of Patricia’s medical situation did not lend itself to the cookie-cutter approach to solving problems encouraged by the medical, pharmaceutical and insurance industries.

Care is almost always abbreviated and fragmented within our current system. Patients, especially those with complex or confusing health issues, often feel they don’t have enough time with their doctor, or that they are not really listened to.

In addition, patients with complicating psychological issues can be very frustrating to the doctor that is trying to maintain a tight schedule or who is overly attached to straightforward solutions. Patricia noted that two days after her visits with her primary care doctor she would typically be in the emergency room seeking treatment for heart rate or blood sugar problems.

The bear wasn’t scary or a burden, it was empowering and freeing. The knowledge the bear, or really my life, my soul and my being, was all mine, was almost euphoric in feeling. The bear would be with me forever and had been with me since the beginning. I have no words to describe the realization the bear is mine. I suppose one would say it was a spiritual experience.

I needed to be ready to receive the bear and see it and feel it wholly. It came to me in a dream at one of the most desperate and lonely times in my life, a time when I was ready for my life to end. The bear has been there, waiting for me just as it is for everyone. You simply have to be open and ready to it.

One morning, when both her body and her emotional life were especially upheaved, Patricia had the following dream:

In Patricia’s dream, the bear is a symbol of the Self, the lifegiving core of the total personality. Like the bear, the Self is a living, dynamic and autonomous being, with its own intentions, goals and process of development. Also like the bear, the Self is injured when you treat it as an object to be manipulated rather than a life force to be respected and learned from. You cut up and antagonize the psyche when you study and analyze it only for the sake of controlling it, or bending it to your will. Unfortunately, this is how so much of modern

I went into the lobby of a plain building. There were two double doors that opened into a room that looked like a dining room.

It had square tables that seated four and all the chairs were turned towards the front of the room. In the lobby, next to the two double doors was a cutout of a black bear with brown fur on its stomach. The bear was standing upright on its hind legs and its left front paw was raised to the sky as if reaching up.

The bear was not intimidating, more like welcoming.

There were other people in the room, all looking towards the front. They were waiting to hear a lecture on a way of life. I never saw the person who was to give the lecture but it was a man and he called his lecture “Take the Bear.” I understood that the “bear” was a metaphor but was not sure for what. I did not hear the lecture in the dream but absorbed the message: The Bear is yours.

The lecture was on what to do with the bear. The idea was that in order to manage the bear one must cut it into pieces. How you cut it into manageable pieces was different for every single person. How you cut it didn’t mean by which object you use but where and how big or small you decide it is necessary to make the cut so you can manage it. Some people may need to

“Drugstore Flu” Spreads New H1N1 Sickness

here is evidence that this year’s longer lasting, more exhausting and deadly flu striking one in five Americans this season, is being caused by “live” viruses spread through supermarket and drugstore pharmacies.

Prior to 2009’s sudden emergence of the H1N1 “swine flu,” there were many other respiratory viruses blamed for the flu.

There was Influenza A and B, the SARS and bovine corona viruses. The last one was responsible for nearly 15 percent of colds and flu’s at that time. Now, suddenly, the CDC’s hospital surveillance data shows the complete disappearance of every flu virus in North America, except the 2009 H1N1 (which is in the vaccine!).

There is also evidence that health officials purposely concealed evidence that the “Drugstore Flu” originated from laboratory mutations of the feared H1N1 “swine flu” of 2009, spread through nasal sprays causing sneezing and widespread transmission, causing the new sickness and many deaths.

Latest CDC data proves that less than one percent of nearly 2,000 virus samples tested showed any reduction from the vaccines being given. In addition, the government published data, courtesy of the joint CDC and World Health Organization flu surveillance project, shows nearly 40 percent of tests were willfully neglected, obviously skewing the results, concealing the H1N1 vaccination/hospitalization association.

Dr. Leonard Horowitz, a Harvard trained public health expert, discovered the U.S. Government documents showing scientific fraud, criminal negligence and lacking common sense. Official reports indicate the longer lasting, more exhausting “Drugstore Flu” is the result of vaccines that contain viruses weakened for ferrets, but not humans.

In short, think long and hard before deciding to believe the media and organized medicine push to “get a flu vaccination” this year.

Dr. Horowitz discovered startling evidence while reviewing Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports. Disease surveillance centers nationally reported evidence, and neglected evidence, that would cause any reasonable person to consider supermarkets and drugstore chains administering “live” H1N1 mutants as the source of the “Drugstore Flu.”

Cloth Diapers Written By Allison Prater towards recycling disposable diapers was made in the city of Seattle, involving 800 families, 30 daycare centers, a hospital and a Seattle-based recycler for a period of one year. The conclusion made by Procter & Gamble was that recycling disposable diapers was not an economically feasible task on any scale. In contrast, cloth diapers can be reused 50 to 200 times before being turned into rags.

n this month’s nurture column, I’m going to discuss some of the benefits of cloth diapers. There are many reasons to consider using cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers. To keep things simple, I’ve compiled a top 5 list:

Top 5 reasons to choose cloth of single-use diapers:

3.) Protect your precious babe’s health: The most common reason for diaper rash is excessive moisture against the skin.

Diaper rash was almost unheard of before the use of rubber or plastic pants in the 1940s. There are several nasty chemicals in single use diapers that are sitting on your baby’s skin, and being absorbed into the blood stream. These chemicals include traces of Dioxin, an extremely toxic by-product of the paperbleaching process. It is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals. It is banned in most countries, but not the U.S. They also contain Tributyl-tin (TBT) - a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals. And don’t forget sodium polyacrylate, a type of super absorbent polymer (SAP), which becomes a gel-like substance when wet. A similar substance had been used in super-absorbency tampons until the early 1980s when it was revealed that the material increased the risk of toxic shock syndrome by increasing absorbency and improving the environment for the growth of toxin-producing bacteria. In May 2000, the Archives of Disease in Childhood published research showing that scrotal temperature is increased in boys wearing disposable diapers, and that prolonged use of disposable diapers will blunt or completely abolish the physiological testicular cooling mechanism important for normal spermatogenesis.

Reduce waste: The Real Diaper Association estimates that more than 27.4 billion disposable diapers are consumed every year in the U.S. The instructions on a disposable diaper package state clearly that all fecal matter should be deposited in the toilet before discarding. Even so, less than one half of one percent of all waste from single-use diapers goes into the sewage system. Over 92% of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill. Furthermore it is estimated that it takes about 250500 years for single use diapers to decompose, meaning that your great, great, great, great grandchildren will still be dealing with the implications of this waste. Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste. In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste.

4.) Save precious natural resources: Single use diapers use large amounts of raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp.

Over 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum and 20 pounds of chlorine are used to produce disposable diapers for one baby EACH YEAR! While single use manufactures like to argue that cloth diapers aren’t sustainable either because of the amount of water required to wash them, this is a fallacy.

The manufacture and use of disposable diapers amounts to 2.3 times more water wasted than cloth. In 1991, an attempt

2.) Save money: The Real Diaper Association estimates that each baby will need about 6,000 diapers during the first two years of life. The following estimates are based on prices in San Francisco, California. Let’s assume that a family needs about 60 diapers a week. In the San Francisco Bay area, disposable diapers cost roughly 23¢ per store-brand diaper and 28¢ for name-brand. This averages to 25.5¢ per diaper. Thus, the average child will cost about $1,600 to diaper for two years in disposable diapers, or about $66 a month. For cloth diapering, each family will probably need about 6 dozen diapers, or even less. The cost of cloth diapering can vary considerably, from as low as $300 for a basic set-up of pre-folds and covers, to $1000 or more for organic cotton fitted diapers and wool covers. Despite this large price range, it should be possible to buy a generous mix of pre-folds and diaper covers for about $300, most of which will probably last for two children. This means the cost of cloth diapering is about one tenth the cost of disposables, and you can spend even less by using found objects (old towels & T-shirts).

It is so focused on the control and suppression of symptoms that the creative and purposive role of those symptoms is rarely ever considered. The psyche as a living, autonomous whole is denied, ignored, or placed in restraints. Modern medicine was in some ways killing Patricia.

Patricia’s dream conveys two opposing attitudes towards the bear (her psyche). The first attitude reflects her ego’s usual orientation to the psyche, which is to cut it up into pieces through analysis and a mechanistic perspective. The other attitude, less contaminated by the ego’s false assumptions, emphasizes wholeness, seeing the bear (psyche) as a living, guiding force in her life. This revelation was a difficult one for Patricia to grasp. (“You mean I get the whole bear?”) But it was also one that opened the door to her seeing and relating to her body and the psyche from a more attentive and respectful standpoint.

1.) Reduce child poverty: On an even larger scale, consider this: There was an estimated 8.8 million babies in the U.S. are using 27.4 billion disposable diapers every year in 2000.

Based on these calculations, if we multiply the 8.8 million babies in disposable diapers by an average cost of $800 a year, we find that Americans spend about 7 billion dollars on disposable diapers every year. If every one of those families switched to home-laundered cloth, pre-fold diapers, they would save more than $6 billion, enough to feed about 2.5 million American children for an entire year. Coincidentally, the 2002 U.S. Census reveals that 2.3 million children under 6 live in poverty.

Rather than treating herself and her body like a frustrating, disordered machine, she developed a more compassionate and humble attitude towards it. For example, she started to augment her knowledge of diabetic nutrition with greater responsiveness to her own instincts about what to eat and when. She became more assertive with her doctors regarding her care and much less reliant on hospitals and urgent care clinics to resolve problems that they, frankly, did not understand. Most importantly, Patricia started working with her physical and psychological symptoms in a way that helped her to learn from and grow through them. For instance, instead of asking her psychiatrist for a different antidepressant, she worked therapeutically with her depression to become more authentic and self-trusting in the way she lived her life.

When I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to choose cloth diapers, but I was still overwhelmed at the prospect. I thought that I was going to be resigning myself to two years of scrubbing diapers at every turn. I have been pleased to report that cloth diapers are easy to launder, and work with. We use the Bum Genius brand and have been very happy with them. They can be resized, rarely leak, and pull moisture away from the skin.

Because we practice Elimination communication, or EC with our son, we have been able to reduce the number of cloth diapers we use in a week significantly, thus reducing our water use even further. I will be discussing EC in greater depth in next month’s column. Please consider ditching disposable diapers, for the health of your baby, the planet and out of respect for all children, present and future.

The Queen of Herbs

cimum tenuiflorum, also known as Ocimum sanctum, is better known as Holy basil, or tulsi. It is an aromatic plant in the family native to South Asia. Tulsi is a multi branched small shrub, usually growing only 30–60 cm in height. The plant has hairy stems and beautiful green or purple leaves that are strongly scented. The flowers have a subtle purple tint. The two main types of Tulsi cultivated in India and Nepal: the green-leaved (Sri or Lakshmi Tulsi) and purple-leaved (Krishna Tulsi).

Tulsi is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely used throughout South Asia as a medicinal plant and as an herbal tea. In Ayurveda, it is affectionately known as the queen of herbs, and has an important role within the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism, in which, devotees perform worship involving holy basil plants or leaves.

Tulsi’s decongestant action explains its use in treating coughs, colds, fevers, sore throats and flu. Studies have demonstrated holy basil’s activity against a range of micro-organisms including E. Coli, Staphylococcus aurous and Mycoplasma tuberculosis.

Research has also demonstrated Tulsi’s ability to lower blood sugar, as well as cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In a 1996 study of 40 patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes, those who took 2.5 grams of dried Tulsi leaf each morning experienced a definite reduction in their blood glucose levels, as well as cholesterol levels.

Tulsi is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita, an ancient Ayurvedic text. The herb is considered to be an adaptogen, meaning it is helpful in balancing different processes in the body, making it more adaptable to stress. Its strong aroma and astringent taste, is regarded in Ayurveda as a kind of “elixir of life” and is believed to promote longevity. It is also considered a Sattvic herb.

Sattva is the quality of love, light, tranquility, compassion, harmony and love. It is said to promote wisdom and intelligence, and enhance perception and clarity, as well as joy and contentment. According to Vedic wisdom Sattva encourages spiritual awakening and development of the soul.

Tulsi’s health-giving properties are supported by its array of constituents, including flavonoids, fatty acids, sterols and polyphenols. It strengthens the immune system and benefits digestion. Its essential oils, which include eugenol, carvacrol, linalool, nerol and camphor, give Tulsi its sweet, pungent aroma and taste. The warming properties of Tulsi improve digestion and absorption of nutrients. Tulsi also has antispasmodic actions, which help relieve spasm, wind and bloating. Tulsi’s appetizing, digestive, laxative and anthelmintic actions have been used to treat symptoms related to anorexia, as well as nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and worms. Tulsi also has a mild laxative effect and anti-ulcer activity. This reduces the effect of peptic acid or irritating drugs on the stomach lining and

Tulsi can also help calm anxiety, mild depression, insomnia, and a variety of stress-related problems such as headaches and irritable bowel syndrome. Its antioxidant actions may account for its adaptogenic effect, and its ability to increase resilience to stress. It boosts energy in a way that is grounding and centering, instead of over-stimulating the system the way caffeine will.

As you can see, there are many benefits to this revered herb.

While Tulsi is generally regarded as safe, because of its warming action, pregnant and nursing mothers are advised to use caution and consult with their caregiver before ingesting this plant. Tulsi can be taken in teas, juice or in tincture form. It is often combined with ginger and black pepper and honey. Tulsi is easy to grow, in India, Tulsi is traditionally grown in domestic courtyards, partly for spiritual purposes but also because its aroma is said to purify the atmosphere. fter having a wonderful experience with a counselor as a child, I knew I wanted to help people feel the same way by helping them make positive changes in their lives. This led me down my long journey of becoming a clinical psychologist.

Initially, I started working with older adults with depression during my undergraduate career at Texas A&M University. I eventually left Texas to pursue my Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno, to which much of my time was focused on improving the lives of older adults with Alzheimer’s disease.

As I approached my last years of education, I moved to LA to complete one of the few geropsychology internship programs in the country at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs (WLAVA). During my internship, I gained further training in geriatrics, but I also received valuable expertise in health psychology. The following year I was accepted to the only WLA-VA postdoctoral fellowship offered in health psychology. Throughout the next year at the fellowship, I worked with an inpatient rehabilitation unit for Veterans with serious medical problems. I assisted in the development of a chronic pain rehabilitation program and a women’s weight management program. I also worked in a sleep disorders clinic providing non-medication behavioral sleep medicine (BSM) treatments.

It was during my work in the BSM clinic when I learned that insomnia is a huge public health concern. It’s estimated that about 30 percent of the American population is affected by insomnia.

Most people will experience some type of sleep disturbance in their lives, but insomnia is more than just occasional problems with sleep. Studies have shown that chronic insomnia is linked to an increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and obesity. There is also a greater risk of developing depression

The Longevity Stone

ade is the name shared by two distinctly different minerals: Nephrite, a calcium magnesium silicate, and Jadeite, a sodium aluminum silicate. Though they have different compositions, hardness, density and crystal structure, both are exceptionally tough stones, similar in appearance, and equally valuable in metaphysical properties. Both occur in the beautiful olive shades we’ve come to recognize as jade green. Stones we know as Jade can be found in several different colors including green, blue, black, violet, white, yellow, red and brown. We will focus on green jade, as it is the most common.

Jade is an abundance stone, representing the flow of Divine energy into the physical reality of one’s life. It brings harmony and happiness in business and family relationships, as well material abundance. Jade is a powerful conduit of the earth’s life force, harnessing the power of nature’s constant renewal.

It is a potent aid in nurturing, whether it is fledgling family relationships or a new business venture. Green Jade is perfect for keeping a venture on course, or a project on schedule. Green crystals promote spiritual growth and renewed commitment to a higher purpose. Those of a darker hue are talismans of physical growth and strength, and safety in travel. In lighter shades, Olive Jade provides the perseverance needed in our quest for understanding the natural universe, as well as efforts that require deep concentration, determination and endurance.

In deeper tones, Olive Jade is a helpful stone for students. It is excellent for achieving goals that need deep constancy and long-term purpose--not wild, exuberant growth, but slow, steady development.

Jade is a receptive stone associated with the planet Venus and the Element of water. It is closely associated with Buddha and the Chinese Goddess of Compassion, Kwan Yin. It is common to find both of these deity figures fashioned from Jade. It is also associated with Maat, the Egyptian goddess of justice.

When the stone is struck, it produces a resonate tone. Jade has been used to create musical instruments such as chimes, gongs and xylophones. Such instruments have been found throughout the continent of Africa. Both the Chinese and the Hopi peoples also used them. In New Zealand, the Maori people carve nephrite (Jade’s cousin) into images of ancestors, usually set with mother-of-pearl eyes.

Jade is a wonderful stone to work with while meditating. Olive shades particularly conducive to this purpose. Prayer beads work well for steadying the mind. Finger the beads, one by one, and for each recite a rhythmic slow four- or five-word phrase or mantra, such as “May all be at peace.” Go around and around the beads until you are in a state of deep relaxation. Wearing jewelry fashioned from Jade will invite its energies of love, abundance, calm and courage.

Green Jade is often used in crystal therapy in relation to the Heart Chakra. This Chakra is located near the center of the breastbone.

It regulates our interaction with the external world, in terms of what we embrace and what we resist. It helps us feel safe being our authentic selves. When a person is experiencing imbalances in the Heart Chakra, they will often be experiencing control issues in their relationships, and a tendency to be overly critical of loved ones. They may also find themselves feeling easily overstimulated in every day situations.

I feel like I’ve provided them with the right tools to use if insomnia becomes a problem againHearing all their positive stories reminds me of why I became a psychologist, and why I find great joy in treating people who have insomnia and other chronic health conditions.

Ultimately, it is up to each person to decide how to make their own lifestyle changes, but my hope is that rather than resort to medications people will understand that they do have options.

or anxiety disorders. The bottom line is the more you allow insomnia to go on untreated, the more suceptible you are to greater health issues. The good news is that people do not have to suffer from chronic insomnia as effective non-medication treatments do exist.

Through my training, I gained valuable expertise in the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), which is an efficient and successful treatment for insomniaAccording to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, CBT-I has become the standard treatment for chronic insomnia. Typically, people will initially seek a physician’s advice, who may discuss sleep hygiene techniques and likely will prescribe medications. CBT-I, however, goes beyond the general physician counseling and addresses the key behaviors, as well as the thoughts, that can interfere with sleep. Unfortunately, people will often believe medication is the only treatment. What they probably don’t know is that there really hasn’t been any reliable conclusions regarding the longterm effectiveness of sleeping pills. In reality, when insomnia becomes chronic it generally will not disappear on its own, and may not even improve with medication. Research has shown that the use of CBT-I has equal, or even greater, effectiveness when compared to medications, and may lead to sustained resolution of insomnia after drug discontinuation.

olloidal silver consists of tiny silver particles suspended in liquid. This is the same type of precious metal used in jewelry, silverware and other consumer goods.

Colloidal silver products are usually marketed as dietary supplements that are taken by mouth. Colloidal silver products also come in forms applied to the skin, and sometimes it is even taken by injection.

Even the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is skeptical of colloidal silver. On their website, they state the following, “Silver has no known function in the body. Silver is not a nutritionally essential mineral or a cure-all and should not be promoted as such. Claims that there can be a “deficiency” of silver in the body and that such a deficiency can lead to disease are unfounded. Claims made about the effectiveness of colloidal silver for numerous diseases are unsupported scientifically. Colloidal silver can have serious side effects.”

Hippocrates discussed the use of silver in wound care. At the beginning of the twentieth century, surgeons routinely used silver sutures to reduce the risk of infection. In the early 20th century, physicians used silver-containing eye drops to treat ophthalmic problems. Sometimes, silver would be taken internally for diseases such as epilepsy, gonorrhea and the common cold. During World War I, soldiers used silver leaf to treat infected wounds.

The most infamous side effect associated with colloidal Silver is known as “argyria.” Over time, silver builds up in the tissues of the body. This buildup of silver can lead to a side effect of grayish or bluish discoloration of the skin, conjunctiva (the clear membrane that covers the white part of the eye), nails, and gums. In 2009, the FDA issued a warning to consumers about the risk of argyria associated with the use of dietary supplements containing silver, including colloidal silver. Argyria is usually permanent and may discolor large portions of the body, especially those exposed to the sun. Attempts to reverse the discoloration have usually been unsuccessful, except in instances where only small areas of skin needed to be treated.

Argyria has occurred in people who drank homemade colloidal silver liquids as well as in people who used commercial colloidal silver products.

Colloidal silver, and formulations containing silver salts, were used by physicians in the early 20th century, but their use was largely discontinued in the 1940s following the development of modern antibiotics. Prior to the introduction of antibiotics, colloidal silver was used as a germicide and disinfectant. With the development of these antibiotics, the use of silver as an antimicrobial agent diminished. Since the 1990s, colloidal silver has again been marketed as an alternative medicine, often with extensive “cure-all” claims.

Manufacturers of colloidal silver products often claim that they have the power to boost your immune system, fight bacteria and viruses, and treat serious disease conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, shingles and herpes. It is also said to be effective in treating eye ailments, fungal conditions such as candida, boils, acne, and prostatitis. It is said to speed wound healing as well. It is important to note however, the majority of these claims are anecdotal. No scientific studies that evaluate these health claims have been published in reputable medical journals. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration took action against some manufacturers of colloidal silver products for making unproven health claims.

In some cases, it has been reported that colloidal silver may have caused kidney, liver or nervous system problems. Colloidal silver may interfere with the body’s absorption of some drugs, such as certain antibiotics, thyroxine (used to treat thyroid disorders), and penicillamine (used to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and metal poisoning).

That being said, there are some curious contradictions where facts about colloidal silver are concerned. For example, silver has been used as a water-disinfecting agent, in the drinking water supplies of the Russian Mir orbital station and the International Space Station. Many modern hospitals filter hot water through copper-silver filters to defeat MRSA and

legionella infections. The World Health Organization includes colloidal silver in water filters as one of a number of water disinfection methods designed to provide safe drinking water in developing countries.

A 2013 article in Scientific American discusses the work of a team led by James Collins, a biomedical engineer at Boston University in Massachusetts. His team described how silver can disrupt bacteria, and shown that the ancient treatment could help to deal with the thoroughly modern scourge of antibiotic resistance. The work is published in Science Translational Medicine as well. Collins and his team found that silver--in the form of dissolved ions--attacks bacterial cells in two main ways: it makes the cell membrane more permeable, and it interferes with the cell’s metabolism, leading to the overproduction of reactive, and often toxic, oxygen compounds. Both mechanisms could potentially be harnessed to make today’s antibiotics more effective against resistant bacteria, Collins says.

Proponents of colloidal silver and its benefits criticize the credibility of the FDA since it is perceived by some to be beholden to the interests of the pharmaceutical industry. Critics of colloidal silver dismiss this supplement as pure quackery and nothing more. Until more controlled, independent studies are conducted, the effectiveness and safety of colloidal silver products will remain a mystery.
