s we roll into April, the month designated to celebrate planet Earth, it would appear that Earth is not happy and is yelling it loud and clear. Every time you turn around, there is another horrific natural disaster. Japan’s 9 point earthquake not only shocked their country, but geophysicists are now paying close attention to the Pacific Ring of Fire and the possibility for more earthquakes to follow suit. What can we do as human beings on this planet, I guess for starters “Wake Up” to the fact that we are all energetically intertwined. What happens to our neighbors affects each one of us dramatically. The same universal laws that apply to physics also apply to how we treat our fellow beings and our environment. This is nothing new; books have been written for years warning against environmental pollution as well as financial and materialistic abuse. When and where does the buck stop? It stops with each one of us; if we want to see change, we must first change ourselves to be that agent of change. We cannot rely on policy makers to do what is best for our world as they tend to have their own agendas. HB devoted this issue to Mother Earth; you will find articles that address connection to one another on a deeper level. Living in balance and off the grid, Ffjorren reviews two alternatively constructed homes, one built in Winnemucca, NV and the other in Nevada City, CA. June reviews the book “Keepers of the Children.” Shelby writes how internal cleansing opens us up to be more sensitive to our surroundings. Andy Drymalski’s “The Dark Side of the New Age” is one of his best articles yet! Discover businesses that protect our natural resources and learn where you can attend schools that teach how to incorporate a conscious soul into your business and into your life. As usual, we’re also bringing you alternative therapies to mainstream illness, healing naturally! Wishing you all a spirit filled Easter and a happy, healthy, prosperous time on Mother Earth. From all of us at HB, Thank you readers and advertisers; for it is all of you that make it possible to publish Healthy Beginnings Magazine each month! HB

COVERSTORY
n a time when the world is facing uncertainty...our lives, it seems, intertwine. As we continue to shift toward a global community, in business and pleasure, foreign travel increases. More and more people Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar traverse the globe, to “far off” lands, finding themselves immersed in cultures, rich in history and mystique. But what they do not always schedule into their itineraries are natural disasters, civil unrest and political agenda. This does not just include the masses of US citizens who travel, work and live overseas; it also includes the residents of these areas, where our business now takes place. For example, many US contracted call centers, manufacturing plants and company offices exist on soil other than our own. Now, more than ever, WE need to align. Not “we” as in people who define their existence based solely on the country of their birth. But rather, “we,” as in human beings, need to acknowledge the congruent force that holds us together as a whole: our residency on Earth. Even beyond the global connection we share online, television and other mediums, our planet ties us to one another in a much stronger capacity. We are global tenants, who are charged with the upkeep and care of this great planet we call home. As our planet continues to do what it does, that being evolution, we will find ourselves further indebted to a life that will only find stability in what is naturally offered to mankind. It seems that from the beginning of man’s existence, the one thing we do consistently is seek control. Evolution will run its course, as it always has; and unless we find a way to break through the consistence web of control we work to create, WE may no longer fit into the natural order of life, as we know it. That being said, I urge you to read on. You will find a variety of articles tying into this “Earth” issue of Healthy Beginnings Magazine. HB

Feng Shui Facts & Fiction Written By Rebecca Moore
Stores are abundant with feng shui books containing interesting techniques; however, authentic feng shui is not as straight forward as these authors would lead one to believe.
Did any life issues influence your decision on choosing your home? HB “Every home must be treated individually since each situation is unique.
Every home must be treated individually since each situation is unique--the facing, shape, trees, surrounding environment, neighboring buildings, entry, windows and internal design. All of these characters have a relationship and therefore condition the energy of a home. What may be good for one can be detrimental to another.

The energy of a home interacts with paint colors, decorating and furniture placement, which all influence the occupants regarding money, relationships, personality and personal energy. A home can also influence many health related problems in the bone, blood, back and stomach. People choose homes that match the energy of their current life situations, whether it is happiness, loneliness, anger, healthy relationships, tumultuous relationships, ample income, financial struggles, reclusive behavior or specific health issues. People then paint and decorate in a way that supports their life situation, and so it continues. April 2011

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

I AM
Film Review
Discover A New You This Year Reviewed By Ffjorren Zolfaghar
I AM is an engaging documentary, exploring ideologies surrounding human nature. It begins with an introduction to Director Tom Shadyac, whose work includes Bruce Almighty, Liar Liar and Ace Venture: Pet Detective, among others. It is his personal journey; one that takes him from a Hollywood lifestyle to a life of giving to others. It is a self-made riches to rags story; with a twist of faith, hope and healing. After facing a near-death bicycling accident and Post Concussion Syndrome, Shadyac was compelled to explore life and the mysteries it held; with hopes of finding “truth” he could share with others. His questions were not limited to what he thought was wrong with our world; they also included what was right. With that, Shadyac sold his A-List home and belongings, and began to manifest his resolute. He would not begin this film looking down the lens of a Hollywood budget; but instead, he set out with a small crew of four, traveling the world to find those who were closer to the answers he was seeking. The film offers thought provoking interviews, concepts and general data, supporting the theory that “we” are all connected to one another; we thrive as a species when we cooperate and work under the premise of love. Shadyac speaks with intellectual and spiritual leaders around the world, including South Africa’s Archbishop Desmund Tutu, Canadian Environmentalist David Suzuki, philosopher and scientist Noam Chomsky and historian and political activist Howard Zinn, to name a few. I AM is a documentary about human connection. One might even call it a story about love; the kind of love that pushes beyond Hollywood’s version: an attractive couple, searching for compatibility. The kind of love this film promotes is one that creates change, merges humanity and calls us to action... to bring forth an enlightened evolution of humankind.

Radiation protective benefits of Spirulina and Chlorella Protecting yourself in the event of a serious radiation event involves much more than simply loading up on potassium iodide and various other iodine supplements. While high levels of iodine do protect the thyroid and glandular systems from radiation poisoning, they do not necessarily protect the rest of your body from the devastating and deadly effects of nuclear radiation. Two amazing superfoods -- Spirulina and Chlorella -- offer substantiated protection against harmful radiation. They also help to detoxify the body of harmful radiation after exposure, effectively protecting organs and other areas not protected by iodine. Learn more: http://www.naturalnews.com/031779_spirulina_radiation.html#ixzz1HFldM492 Spirulina, the incredible medical food used to treat child victims of Chernobyl But little known is the incredible radioprotective power of Spirulina. Numerous studies have found that Spirulina protects the body against -- and even heals it from -- the damaging effects of harmful radiation. A 1989 study put forth by researchers from Zhongkai Agriculture and Technology College in China found in tests that Spirulina significantly reduces the gamma radiation-induced micronucleus frequencies in the bone marrow of affected mice. Bone marrow, of course, is responsible for producing new blood cells and maintaining the lymphatic system (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/...). Chlorella, the detoxifying superfood with amazing radioprotective benefits Much like Spirulina, Chlorella is loaded with an astounding array of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that help detoxify the body of heavy metals and other contaminants. The single-cell algae also helps to prevent and repair DNA damage, balance the body’s pH levels, fight inflammation, improve digestive health, and boost immune function (http://www.naturalnews.com/027894_c...). A 1989 study put forth by the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences demonstrated that Chlorella effectively increases production of bone marrow and spleen stem cells. And in tests, Chlorella greatly helped improve survival rates among mice irradiated with a lethal dose of radioactive gamma rays (http://www.ncbi.nlm. nih.gov/pubmed/...). exuality is often linked directly to sexual acts, or sexual orientation. However, it is much more than that; sexuality is a core part of our identity, which includes our feelings about our gender, sexual behaviors and our body image. Body image is how we feel about ourselves physically, and how we perceive others see us. Both men and women may struggle with their body image and it can strongly affect their sexuality. The more that we are distracted by negative thoughts about our body, the less we are able to feel comfortable during our most intimate moments alone or with a partner. Do you find yourself imagining what you look like from the outside, rather than focusing on the sensations that you feel inside? Worrying about cellulite or sucking your stomach in does not enhance an orgasm! Cultural definitions of what is considered to be “beautiful” vary from society to society. Additionally, the ideals of beauty are quite different in each era of time. The voluptuous bodies of Marilyn Monroe and Betty Davis are drastically different from the emaciated Victoria’s Secret models that society deems as “perfect” today. Therefore, it is important to remember that we are not born with poor body images; it is something that we learn.
early 1980’s, the average model weighed 8 percent less than the average American woman; she now weighs 23 percent less; the average American woman is 5’4” tall and weighs 140 pounds, while the average American model is 5’11” tall and weighs 117 pounds. Most fashion models are thinner than 98 percent of American women. And let’s not forget about the image enhancement that is done through airbrushing and photo-shop! Is it fair to compare ourselves to something that doesn’t even exist? Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues, clarifies that “We Americans like to tell ourselves we are free, but we are imprisoned. We are controlled by a corporate media that decrees what we should look like and then determines what we have to buy in order to get that look.” Question your images of beauty. Are they realistic? Do they include people from all cultures and ethnicities, with varying levels of physical abilities? Do you see the beauty in people for who they are, rather than what they look like? “Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson HB
Within Western cultures, women are held to an extremely high standard; thinness and beauty are equated with sexual desirability. The images portrayed in the media are very unrealistic and do not represent the average size of women. Consider these facts: In the April 2011

CHOOSING THE LIFE YOU WANT BY TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE LIFE YOU HAVE
W
e have major problems in the world today, not only worldwide but problems in our individual lives around the dynamics of relationships, including our spouses, our friends, our families, our business partners, as well as the relationships with things like finances and careers.
as you thought you were. Your life is reflecting back to you that something is way out of balance. In our country we have more wealth that is available to us than any other country in the world and yet we have more people who are struggling financially, barely making it from paycheck to paycheck and don’t even have $5,000 in their bank account. These are people that have been working for 30 or 40 years, eight to five, five days a week like robots. They are doing the same thing everyday from early in the morning to late at night. They are on automatic, but they don’t know they are on automatic! They are working the so-called dream by doing their eight or ten hours a day, five maybe six days a week and according to the statistics the average person at the age of 65 will end up dead broke! Why is that? Now some people might answer that question with “That’s just the way life is, life has to be a struggle!” Yet, “life has to be a struggle” is nothing more than a thought form that they’ve turned into their own personal law. It’s them believing that life has to be a struggle and because they are believing it within their heart of hearts, because they are believing it within their cellular structure of the way they think about themselves and the way they feel about themselves, that is what now manifests in their life. What better way for this to show up in someone’s life than that of their finances.
While we all engage in many forms of relationships on a daily basis, most people are operating within them with a very low level of awareness. The problem is they think this is the highest level of awareness that exists. To better understand this concept we first need to look at choice and how it relates to our current circumstances. When it comes to our choices, there is one thing you can go to the bank on and that is this: every time we make a choice, that choice must be followed by a consequence that can only reflect the quality and depth of the choice that was made prior to the experience of the consequence. Most people are not aware that the reason why their life is the way it is today and everyday is because of them! It’s not because of their ex-mate or ex-business partner, even though there are some that have convinced themselves that “he did it to me” or “she did it to me” or “they did it to me” and they are going to pay! But the reality is the only person who is going to pay is you! This person who so-called “did it to you” could be off in Hawaii having a great time and could even be transforming their own lives into something better. Meanwhile, you’re back here saying, “Oh, they’re going to pay!” and the one who’s really paying is you. Why? Because you are the one who’s holding the negative energy! It was your choice! You chose at some point in your life to not only hold others in negative energy but to start accumulating more of its like! Why? Because you’re going to be right, because you know it all, because you’re smart and you have everything under control. Meanwhile, your life is reflecting back to you, you weren’t as smart Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
It’s time to start making better choices and one of the highest choices you can make for yourself is to take responsibility for your own life. Start choosing to let go of all this negative energy you have been holding on to because the truth is, the more negative energy you have inside you, the more of a prison you will feel like you are in. There is no freedom in negativity. The more negativity you hold on to, the more you will feel like your life is stuck or you’re living out the same old story over and over again. So many people come across good opportunities but can’t access them because the moment they start to go toward it, their fears are activated that haven’t been cleared from with inside themselves and they end up making a choice to not go there. Or if they do choose to go there, they end up sabotaging it which becomes another choice. Perhaps their belief system or program is “I’m not good enough” or “others make me wrong”. If this is a program that they have been running for a good portion of their life, then it’s just a matter of time and someone will come into their life and do exactly what 10
April 2011
they have been believing deep inside and end up making them wrong or making them feel not good enough. If this has happened to you, and if you haven’t been paying attention, you’re going to think that they really “did it to you”. If you aren’t willing to let that go, it’s just a matter of time and you get to go for round number twelve. Someone else will come in and do the very same thing that the last person just did, only every time somebody comes in and does the same thing, the energy or the experience becomes louder. The next experience or person may look different than the last but after the honeymoon is over and the negative experience reemerges, you realize, “Oh my gosh, I’ve just been sucked in again!” The reason you got sucked in again is because you haven’t been paying attention to what’s going on within you for the purpose of clearing that energy out from within your subconscious body. Since you are always at choice, you can make it all about them one more time, or you can come to a point where you say, “I’ve had enough. I thought I knew what I was doing but it’s pretty obvious I really don’t. I’m tired of the pain, the confusion, the conflict, feeling like I’m constipated, not just physically, but financially and emotionally. I just can’t imagine that this is what life is really all about. I need to start making some serious changes.” Although this doesn’t feel like a good place to be, it actually is the best place you could be, because now you are ready to really start making choices that will truly empower your life. There is a higher ground saying that goes, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears”. The truth is, when you are ready to go there, when you are ready to cleanse yourself for real, when you are ready to really evolve and mature and move toward the life that you really deserve and are willing to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes, then all of a sudden the right teacher materializes just for you! This will be the kind of teacher that can truthfully help you accomplish what you’ve now set yourself out to accomplish because you now chose it. Once you choose it and you are willing to back it up with a strong genuine commitment, now the magic can begin! HB go to ad This Page

DON’T BE A CANCER STATISTIC! Written By Mary Sutton, P.T, Nutritional Consultant
PART I:
T
oday, one out of three Americans will get cancer, which is the 2nd leading cause of death in the USA. You don’t have to be a statistic. Boost your immune system to help prevent illness and disease, including cancer. If you are already having health challenges, having a strong immune system will maximize your body’s healing potential.
• Herbal Cleansing, colon, liver, kidneys & blood: Colonrectal cancer is the leading cancer in the U.S. Eighty percent of the immune system response is located in the intestinal tract. Thus, the entire health of the body depends on how efficient the intestinal tract is at absorbing nutrients and in the elimination of wastes; you need to clean it out so it can do its job! Your liver is like your body’s oil filter, and when clogged and dirty, it can’t filter toxins out of the blood; they start being stored in your tissues, organs and brain! Yeast, Candida and/or parasites cause many health challenges, which can be eliminated with herbal cleaning products. Organic kits are available. • Colonics: Safely removes toxic waste material from the large intestine. • Zeolites: Zeolite is a natural, volcanic substance that attracts toxins and heavy metals then safely removes them from the body. Take a zeolite product on a daily basis.
Our immune system is the body’s first line of defense against invaders such as viruses, bacteria and all foreign or toxic substances that enter the body; ones that we have inhaled, eaten or absorbed by the skin. It also destroys cancer cells. Unfortunately, our immune systems are being overworked due to the large amounts of toxins that we are being exposed to in our modern world. Eventually the immune system is overtaxed and starts to break down; it becomes less efficient in neutralizing and destroying unwanted guests, toxins and 2. Mimicking Serotonin you, our customer, and the nearly incomprehensible chaos of the nutrition world, and to look out for your interests, your health and your safety. HB
In the world of life sciences, serotonin is one of the biggest celebrities. Tens of thousands of prescriptions are being written every day for pills that fool your body into thinking it has more serotonin than it does. There is little doubt about it, serotonin has become a goldmine for the pharmaceutical industry. We need serotonin, it’s true. All the surveys and all the psychometric testing could not make it more clear: our country needs to calm down and get some sleep…and stop eating so much carbohydrate. But there are two vastly different approaches to making your body think it has more serotonin. One is to mimic it. The other is to make it. What is puzzling is that with all the articles being written about serotonin, you might think the public would be more familiar with L-tryptophan. There’s really no better, no morenatural way to make serotonin.

It is well-known that European pharmaceutical standards for L-Tryptophan are far higher than U.S. or Japanese standards. The Europeans take safety seriously, as we do at Lidtke. The European standard not only demands testing for known toxins that are ignored in the U.S. and Japan, but European standards have much lower limits on contaminants, overall. Although many products claim to meet pharmaceutical standards, clearly not all pharmaceutical standards are the same - not even close.

HERBS&SPICES
chervil |`ch ervel| noun a plant of the parsley family, with small white flowers and delicate fernlike leaves that are used as a culinary herb. Anthriscus cerefolium, family Umbelliferae.
Written By Allison Prater

Below are a couple of simple recipes to delight the senses with this fine and fancy French herb: HB
nthriscus Cerefolium, or Chervil, is a delicate sister spice, numbered among the fine herbs of French cuisine. It’s warm, tender flavor, a unique mix of parsley and anise, is subtly cheering to the senses. An annual, with lacy, fern-like leaves and hollow stems, is a garnish that is both delicious and elegant. Chervil traditionally accompanies parsley, thyme and tarragon in French cuisine. If you come across the words, “pluches de cerfeuille” in a French cookbook, the recipe is calling for “blanched sprigs of chervil.” It should be added at the very end of a recipe as lengthy heating of the herb causes the flavor to become bitter. Chervil enhances carrots, beets, eggs, spinach, sorrel, fish (especially oysters), cream, cheese, corn and peas. In addition to the fine herbs listed above, it compliments shallots, fresh ground black pepper, marjoram and lemon. Béarnaise sauce, fish sauces, and classic French vinaigrettes, owe part of their delicacy to fresh chervil’s gentle flavor. Much of chervil’s complex flavor fades when the herb is dried, and yet the fresh herb is not commonly found in grocery stores. Thankfully, chervil is easy to grow at home. It can be started from seed and easily grown indoors as part of a kitchen herb garden. The herb does not require much sun, and will be perfectly content placed near an east-facing window. A moderately-rich soil with good drainage is best. Grown outdoors, chervil seeds can be planted every two weeks between March and mid-July, to ensure a continuous harvest. In the hot summer months, the plant has a tendency to bolt and go to seed, unless it is well shaded. From the time of planting, fresh leaves will be ready to cut within six weeks. Often times, the herb will self-sow over the winter, establishing a spring crop for the following year. Chervil’s small white, bell shaped flowers are attractive additions to floral arrangements as well. The leaf contains vitamin C, carotene, iron and magnesium, and is still considered medicinal by some. When used in a tea, chervil has blood purifying and diuretic properties. Its warming qualities stimulate the digestive and circulatory systems. It has been recognized as helpful for high blood pressure, reducing phlegm and easing painful joints. It is also used to treat liver problems, kidney stones, gout and menstrual discomfort. Chervil is beneficial for the skin as well; when used in facial masks, it gently cleanses the skin, while improving its suppleness. It has even been used topically to heal eczema. Of course these claims are not backed by clinical studies, and medicinal use of chervil or any herb should not be undertaken without first consulting a professional health practitioner who is well versed in herbs.

“Over the hills and off the grid…”
With diligent research, she decided that a straw bale house would fit her budget and the lifestyle she was seeking. Together, the Howell family spent evenings, weekends and entire school breaks building their home. They worked on numerous projects including installing insulation and the interior plaster walls. With a combination of family initiative, friends and contractors, the home was complete in two and a half years. To insure the stability of her investment, Teresa had the home engineered and followed the Nevada permit and inspection process. She also paid a little more for upgrades in her home including a metal roof, knotty pine, good windows and slate flooring. In the end, she found that the idea of a straw bale home being “incredibly cheap to build” was a myth. The total cost was close to one hundred thirty thousand dollars. “Before I started the process, I talked to several banks. I was told that although they wouldn’t give me a construction loan, they’d finance me once I was finished,” Teresa commented. She believes that the housing market collapse created a problem, as she was still not able to get a loan in the end. As Teresa explained the financial discrepancies, the positive outcome of her undertaking was still present. She described working with her daughters and how you could tell who did what, as they used their own hands to work and move the plaster on the wall. It is apparent that the effort these women put into their home ties them to it, almost on a spiritual level. “I bet

here are many reasons why people choose their home. One might look for the standard “location, location, location,” while others continue to search for the special place that just “feels” like home. But
as economic strain and ecological shift become key factors in how we choose our lives, more of us are beginning to take the alternate route. This path is not new, but one that simply guides us back to our roots; to a place where alternative energy, green home design and sweat equity thrive. That is what two families, who are local to our region, decided to do. One family spent over two years constructing their straw bale home; where the other focused energies on giving back: dedicating 160 acres to Mother Earth. Both families are living off the grid, in country settings that are “close enough” to town. Their stories are different, but share the same voice overall: change. Teresa Howell, single mother of two, lives with her youngest daughter in Winnemucca, Nevada. She and her family built the first straw bale home in Humboldt County. With a goal of going completely off grid, this English teacher at Great Basin College is doing just that. After selling her “city” home in Winnemucca, Teresa set out to make a life on the five acre parcel that is four miles from town and six miles from her work.
I bled into every single piece of this house,” Teresa said. Now, there is a 25 ft by 30 ft straw bale home—with a 20 ft by 26 ft interior, plus loft—sitting on that five acre parcel that is just four miles from town and six miles from work. Teresa has large gardens, where she Continued on Page 18

the perfect spot, the couple bought a 40 acre parcel of land in the mountains near Nevada City, CA, known as Lone Bobcat Woods. Starting with 40 acres and a web-work of trees and nature, they began the work that was needed to build a home, a life. While doing so, they were able to keep their jobs with Xerox and work remotely. This provided the financial means to purchase land, a home and all of the materials for their projects. Ultimately, they wanted two things: 1) to use renewable and self-sustaining resources and 2) to keep the land that surrounded their home undeveloped. This would also tie into financial freedom, as living off-grid is much less expensive in the long run. Instead of building a home, they chose a manufactured home; with a few added eco-friendly designs of their choosing. This gave them more time to focus on implementing the first part of the plan. Robin and Janaia put their own sweat and tears into this project, as they dug trenches, laid telephone and electric wiring, hauled rocks, helped with the water and natural gas (propane) lines, etc. Over time, they added two porches, a deck and a three-car garage, and did so with many salvaged materials. Within one year of purchasing their first parcel of land, Janaia and Robin purchased another parcel that was connected to theirs; and within five more years, the couple purchased two more parcels, making a combined total of 160 acres of land.

During a time when “going green” was not a current fad or trend, these women placed value in connecting with nature. It was during the early eighties when Janaia and Robin met at Xerox, where they both worked. Janaia was working as a graphic designer and Robin as a software programmer. After a few years, and reading a powerful book on the binding role that finance plays in one’s life, they felt a “higher calling,” they recalled. Janaia created a goal to become debt free. She envisioned complete financial independence. Robin tied her calling to nature; she grew up in Olympia National Forest and truly felt complete in a natural setting. Given the fact that they lived in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time, both of these goals seemed more idealistic than realistic. But after a few years of planning, living frugally and finding
Far beyond the fact that these women purchased land and built a life on it, based on self-sufficiency, is the achievement they made with nature. After purchasing and paying off the land, within less than ten years, they were able to create conservation easements, working with a land trust to do so. While Janaia and Robin hold the title, or possess the main ownership of the land, the land trust they are working with holds the conservation easements that prevent development and old growth clearing. This means that no matter what happens to Janaia, Robin or the land trust, the easement is permaContinued on Page 23

Stevia: A marriage of sweetness and health all-natural sugar substitute to come out that doesn’t carry any side effects, would they?
ver the past few decades, a whole array of artificial sweeteners has been introduced to the general public. As we slowly became more and more aware of the dangers of sugar to our health, we were glad to be presented with any sort of alternative we could lay our hands on. But in recent years, it’s been slowly seeping in that we probably all jumped on the bandwagon too soon... You don’t fool us anymore Just do a quick web search, and you will find countless reports of people suffering from mild to severe unwanted side effects from ingesting Splenda (based on sucralose, a mixture of sugar and chlorine!), aspartame, and other artificial sugar substitutes. Headaches and migraines, stomach aches, rashes, dizziness, anxiety attacks... the list just goes on and on. It may have taken us a while, but we’re finally starting to turn to natural alternatives. More and more people are relying on sugar free, gluten free and even dairy free living--some consciously, some out of sheer necessity. In this respect, one term seems to pop up on a regular basis: Stevia. But what is this new miracle sweetener that so many are raving about? Discovery and beneficial qualities Well, in fact it’s not really new at all. At the turn of the 20th century, a Swiss botanist called Moses Bertoni discovered that the Guarani--a group of indigenous peoples of Paraguay--were using dried leaves of the stevia rebaudiana plant in order to sweeten their infamous “mate,” a type of herbal tea. Also called “sweet leaf” or “honey leaf,” stevia rebaudiana is a perennial shrub with leaves up to 40 times sweeter than plain table sugar. But, that was not the only thing Bertoni found out; he noticed that the natives were using stevia to relieve high blood pressure and to treat cuts and other skin conditions. Because it has a glycemic index of zero, stevia in all its forms is ideal for diabetics. In contrast to many of the artificial sugar substitutes, it does not induce cravings by tricking your body into thinking that eating sweetened foods is okay. On the contrary, stevia was found to suppress cravings. The sweet leaf keeps candidiasis at bay, and stevia sweetened chewing gum prevents the formation of bacteria on your teeth that cause dental plaque and cavities. The all-natural sweetener is also heat stable up to 392°F, which makes it ideal for most cooking and baking. It does not ferment like sugar though, so you’ll need to combine your stevia with some baking soda if you plan on making cakes. Today, stevia is sold in many forms: as pure stevioside extract of course, but also as a liquid extract, in pellet form, in small refined packets and blends, and as dried leaves to sweeten your tea or coffee. The plant is propagated through the use of cuttings rather than seeds, because of its low germination rate, especially in mild climates. An old-fashioned book burning So why is it, you say, that this little miracle plant has been kept in the dark for so many years? Many believe that the sugar lobby quietly struck a deal with the FDA in order to keep stevia off the market, thus securing profits. After all, they wouldn’t want an April 2011
In 1998, the FDA went as far as to order Oscar Rodes, founder of Stevita Co. Inc, to destroy not only his stevia extract but also the cookbooks he was selling that promoted the use of stevia in recipes. When the media caught wind of the story, the FDA was forced to back down and today, Stevita has become one of the biggest distributors of refined stevia in the United States. Towards a brighter future Some of the FDA’s initial studies claimed that stevia stimulates the growth of carcinogenic cells in rats and that the sweetener causes impotence. What most people don’t know is that these studies were founded by producers of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame. Many independent studies have refuted the negative claims, and proven stevia to be completely safe for everyday consumption. In 2008, after a long battle, the FDA finally granted GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status to rebaudioside A, one of the main glycosides (sweet substances) in stevia. It’s plausible that the Coca Cola Company and Pepsico had their say in getting stevia green-lit, as both companies started developing a line of products containing rebaudioside A immediately after the FDA’s approval. In April of 2010, EFSA (The European Food Safety Authority) also approved rebaudioside A as a sweetener. However, it may still take a while for manufacturers to perfect their methods and finish their products. The first of these are expected to hit the shelves in Europe in 2012. Still not convinced of stevia’s safety? After all the little green plant has gone through, we don’t blame you. But consider this: South American natives have been using the honey leaf safely for generations. On top of that, since its introduction in Japan in the 1970’s, stevia is currently the number one sweetener there, with a market share of over 40 percent. All of this occurred without any customer complaints, or reports of illness. Who says life can’t be sweet and healthy at the same time? WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE AND WHY AM I ATTRACTING THEM? Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
A
t one time or another, we’ve all found ourselves wondering why we got into a certain relationship. It may have started out great, but after a few months it began to disintegrate. In determining what’s going on, it’s always useful to look at your past relationships, to see if there are patterns you can recognize. For instance, do you continue to attract the same kind of personality? Unless you begin to examine recurring patterns, you may continue to attract that same person again and again. I have heard gals say, “I keep attracting the same guy in different pants.” We often don’t know what vibrational frequencies we’re broadcasting. Every thought we think has a different frequency, and as that signal is sent out, it attracts back to us the people, conditions and situations that match the thought. Our expectations and beliefs (thoughts we keep on thinking) are sent out like a radio signal, and since like attracts like, we get back the essence of what we’re sending out. You may say, “Wait, I wasn’t thinking abusive thoughts, but I got involved with that abusive guy, and I continue to have abusive relationships. This isn’t my fault!” Well, on some level, often subconscious, it is your own doing. Yet the source of those deeply held beliefs and expectations (the reason you’re attracting those people) may be buried in the past, difficult for you to consciously identify.
if you were reared in a dysfunctional home and never got the parenting every child needs, you may not even know what a good relationship looks like, since you had no role model for that. Even if you do know what kind of relationship you want, you may continue to attract the wrong people who are somehow “familiar.” You can’t put your finger on it, but there’s some reason you’re attracted to that person; you think maybe he’s your soul mate, because you just bonded so quickly. What you don’t know is that he may seem “familiar” because there’s a vibe he’s sending out that matches the vibe of an abusive person in your childhood. That person may seem nice on the surface, may be good looking, may say the right things, and may seem generous and caring. Later you find he’s an abuser. And why was he attracted to you? It is because you are sending out needy “I’m a victim” vibes. Therefore, unbeknownst to you, you’re a magnet to that kind of personality. As a result, you find yourself in that kind of relationship, again and again.
Scientists now know that a huge percentage of human communication is non-verbal, and we don’t mean body language. We mean invisible vibrational frequencies (vibes), electromagnetic frequencies, energies, signals that are beaming out to everyone around us. We’re actually broadcasting and receiving stations. If you don’t know the essence of what you’re broadcasting, and you aren’t in the habit of listening to your intuition about what you’re receiving, you’re sort of flying blind, and will continue to be mightily confused about why you are a magnet to the dysfunctional people you attract. Then, after a relationship has fallen apart, you’ll still wonder why you didn’t recognize the For instance, if you had an abusive or dysfunctional childhood, red flags much earlier. consciously you may say, “Well I’m never going through anything like that again. And another thing to ask yourself during this time…do I have the qualities I want in another? If not, why would he/ she be attracted to you? Make a list of the qualities you want in a mate; deep, important qualities, such as honesty, integrity, loyalty, etc. Not surface qualities, such as, “do they like to ski?” Then ask yourself whether you are honest. Do you have integrity? Are you able to be loyal? This exercise takes some thinking and it certainly takes some honesty. You’re not going to attract the person of your dreams if you are not the person of your dreams.

Businesses that Protect our Natural Resources Capitalism a Tool for Transformation Written By Joy Taylor,

Amazon Herb Company is another example of this new evolved paradigm in business, offering sustainably harvested wild foods from the Amazon. Working with 14 villages in the upper basin of Peru, a relationship based on mutual respect and trust allows the indigenous people to preserve hundreds of thousands of acres while proving that the Rainforest is more valuable alive than dead. Recent studies show that an acre of Rainforest used for cattle grazing is valued at $60. That same acre used for lumber is worth $400, but when used to sustainably wild-craft herbs, its value increases to $2,400; and still remains intact, as Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

As we stare into the face of a changing world, we prepare for the worst; while making the best of what we have. Change, however, is inevitable and it is beginning…we are changing the way we spend money, but more importantly, the way we live our lives. Most people were forced into this situation, having to give up their lifestyle due to financial setbacks. But more and more of us are making this decision on our own; choosing to take our lives into our own hands, while breaking through social norms, “tradition” and the cookie-cutter phenomenon. little wisdom can go a long way when it comes to knowing how massage therapy can help. With specific complaints from the client, a therapist can help rid the body of pain and discomfort, increase mobility and flexibility, while activating the lymphatic system; which improves general health and creates more energy, due to increased circulation. Pain is the body’s signal that something is wrong. Often times, many issues can be prevented with a routine massage program. Stress alone can cause headaches, anxiety, sleep deprivation and compromise the immune system, which makes you more susceptible to colds and flu. The adjacent chart shows several areas of lifestyles, related symptoms and respective remedies. Symptoms can vary from simple nagging aches and pain to burning sensations, shooting pain or heat, throbbing, tingling, numbness and the loss of ability of full range of motion. For example, if one is unable to turn one’s head from side to side. It is said that knowledge is power, and when that knowledge is put into use, it becomes wisdom. Be wise this Earth month and invest in the single most important thing, your health. Without it, you can do nothing. With it, you can move mountains, maybe even save the planet! ocean, resulting in loss of oceanic fauna; these areas are known as “dead zones” and are increasing at an alarming rate. irt doesn’t get a whole lot of respect in our modern industrialized culture, which is unfortunate indeed. Soil is the great transmuter; everything that dies and decomposes into it becomes new life, nourishing every species in our food chain in turn. Healthy soil contains a rich array of vitamins and minerals, and can sustain a broad population of life forms. Greater nutrient content in the soil means greater bio-diversity of plants, making healthy food available to more insects and animals, including humans. When soil quality is poor, there are less of the necessary organisms that sustain life for the plants and animals that depend on healthy soil. Depleted soil is not able to hold water, and in extreme cases, the loss of healthy top soil contributed to land-slides, dust bowls, higher green house gas emissions and other environmental disasters. Soil that is contaminated with chemical fertilizers and pesticides carry those poisons into our ground water and rivers, affecting the ecology of habitats far removed. What we use in our gardens has consequences that reach far beyond the boundaries of our back fence. While corporate interests continue to market synthetic nitrogen fertilizers as efficient and necessary for maximizing garden production, as we will see below, there are plenty of organic alternatives that offer the benefits of soil fertility with the added bonus of improving the health of the entire ecosystem, instead of damaging it for generations to come. Inorganic fertilizers are produced in ways that can only be summed up as unsustainable. Minerals such as potassium and phosphorus are mined, and are not sourced from renewable resources. The mining of these minerals in and of itself is damaging the environment from which they have been extracted. Artificial nitrogen fertilizers are typically synthesized using fossil fuels such as natural gas or coal, which are limited resources as well. Some of the most devastating effects of inorganic fertilizers can be witnessed along the gulf coast in the United States. Fertilizer run-off from the corn-belt is the primary cause of depletion of oxygen in many parts of the Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
from inorganic fertilizer also leech into the ground water, which is shown to cause what is referred to as “blue baby syndrome” (acquired methemoglobinemia) which can lead to coma and death in newborns whose mothers have been exposed to poisoned ground water. The radioactive element Uranium is another example of a contaminant often found in high phosphate fertilizers, in addition to heavy metals such as cadmium. Highly radioactive polonium-210 has been traced to phosphate fertilizers as well. Toxic materials such as these are absorbed by the roots of the plants and transferred to those who eat them. Now that we have outlined some of the many frightening consequences of using synthetic fertilizers, it is time for some good news. As usual, mother-nature is smarter than we are and, she continues to provide us with simple, yet highly effective alternatives. Many organic soil amendments have even been shown to help reverse some of the damage caused by industrial agriculture. For instance, red worms and their castings (aka worm poop), and tea from these castings, have been shown not only to boost soil fertility, but also to break down and neutralize toxic materials in the soil, including heavy metals and radioactive elements! One can create a simple organic fertilizer by soaking dried nettle in a covered bucket of water for a 26

few weeks. It will not smell so good, but it will boost crop yields. Nettle tea is known to make plants less susceptible to pests and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides. Composting is another easy way to boost soil fertility and reduce the amount of garbage your household produces. Start your compost pile by combing fruit and vegetable cuttings, eggs shells, coffee grounds, garden clippings, animal manure and other organic materials. Meat, dairy and human waste (or from domestic cats and dogs) should not be added. This compost pile should be turned over regularly, to help the materials break down. As these materials decompose, they become nutrient rich soil. Soil is the foundation and medium for supporting life on this earth, it is the essence of earth itself. If we are kind to it, it will be kind to us. Choosing organic fertilizers benefits countless life forms, humans included. Healthy soil equals a healthy world. HB

Diabetes Prevention
L
Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMC
ast month, diabetes symptoms and some historical perspective were presented in the article titled, “Sweet Pee – Diabetes at Your Doorstep.” There are many well known drugs, as well as Insulin therapy, for Type I and II diabetes. Once a person needs this kind of intervention with elevated blood sugars, over 130 or so, their doctor may wish to prescribe medication. These drugs are life saving in many circumstances, but rarely address the underlying metabolic disturbances which caused the diabetes. Not only is weight an underlying issue in diabetes but food choices cause inflammatory conditions, which affect the cell membranes and block the sugar (glucose) from getting from the blood into the cells of the body, where the energy is made. This is an extremely complex issue and many lifestyle, nutritional and herbal products can eliminate or reduce the amount of drug intervention that is needed to maintain a healthy blood sugar. Pesticides and PCB’s (polychlorinated biphenyls) and industrial waste accumulate in fat, where they persist for decades. Studies show that people who are high in POPS (persistent organic pollutants) have a 38 fold increase in diabetes than among those with the lowest category of exposure. Eating more organic foods reduces the exposure to POPS and reduces the incidence of diabetes, even in overweight individuals. Bisphenol A is used to make resins for polycarbonate plastic used in food and beverage containers, is known to leach into the containers and is found in 95 percent of urine samples in the United States. It increases the risk of diabetes by 39 percent for each standard deviation increase. Obesity is an important risk factor for diabetes. Weight Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
loss can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. Both aerobic and resistance exercise can also improve insulin sensitivity and reduce diabetes risk, even without losing weight. It was not necessary to lose large amounts of weight in order to realize a benefit. A mean weight loss of 10 pounds, over a two year period, was associated with a 59 percent reduction in the incidence of diabetes. Fructose, primarily high fructose corn syrup, from genetically modified corn that has been soaked in the herbicide Roundup, has a host of awful side effects. From 1970 to 1997, the average annual per capita intake of this sweetener increased from .5 pounds to 62.4 pounds. This increase paralleled an increase in the prevalence of diabetes. Healthy male volunteers, supplementing at the level of 3 g/kg of body weight per day, resulted in insulin resistance after as little as six days. Fast Food Meals served in fast-food restaurants tend to be high in refined sugar, fat and calories. In a 15 year prospective study, frequent consumption of fast foods (more than twice per week) was associated with a 4.5 kg greater weight gain and two fold greater increase in insulin resistance. These findings suggest that frequent consumption of fast food may increase the risk of developing obesity and type II diabetes. Cow’s Milk Cow’s milk is associated with an increase incidence of Type I diabetes, as it can provoke an autoimmune response in the beta cells of the pancreas. Studies show that gluten free diets delayed, and to a large extent prevented, the development of adult onset diabetes. Once again this is a huge subject. Next month’s article will review some of the many important natural supports for the pancreas, and prevention and treatment of diabetes. HB 28

Native American Wisdom and Parenting
child the basics of psychology, so she will avoid the traps of peer pressure and avoid those who intend to do her harm. You’ll learn how to teach your child to act from integrity and strength. Laura Ramirez uses little known Native American concepts and teaching stories to show us, as parents, how to raise children to know their nature and use their strengths. This is much more than a training manual. It is a deeply spiritual book that explores both Native American and “western” cultures, and should appeal to all parents who wish to attain true parenting success. In discussing the punishment/reward system of behavior modification, the author explains that in this system, rewards are as coercive as punishments. When you dangle something before By Laura M. In the act of dangling, June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt you’re attempting to control your child’s behavior through external factors, rather than inspiring him from within. When you do this consistently, you teach your child to look outside of herself for value and confirmation of her worth. higher level. If your children whine about getting in trouble, which all children do, the author and her husband remind their own children that as parents, they care enough to teach their kids how to make good choices. Explaining that it’s your job to help them grow up to be good people, instead of jerks, usually changes In “Keepers of the Children,” you’ll the energy around the situation and elicits learn how to encourage your child’s a smile from the child. uniqueness and set him on a path of purpose. Resolution Skills, Teaching Your Child to be Self-Sufficient and Teaching Your Child How Money Works, as well as many more, make this work a wonderful resource; one which can be referred to over and over as your children grow. In explaining “The Story You Are Creating for Your Child,” the author explains that when fear is the guiding force, it’s impossible to create a joyful life. When fear is the whisper in your ear that you heed most often, you left your heart behind. She explains that in this culture, we deify fear by letting it run and ruin our lives. By focusing on what we fear, we create more of it on a subtle level. By thinking of and “preparing” for the worst means that on some level, we expect it. Teaching your children how to live goo lives (and she gives many examples of how to do this in the book) is what Native Americans call “good medicine.” Good medicine cultivates energy to build a healthy mind, body and spirit because it speaks the language of the heart. Good medicine heals old wounds. A daily dose will help your children ward off diseases of the mind and spirit, such as “quiet desperation,” which rob the heart of the courage to seek its way. One of Laura’s stories is called How Coyote and Beaver became good friends. Beaver takes ill and Coyote invites him to his den to nurse him back to health. Coyote kills several small animals for his friend to eat, but Beaver isn’t interested. Without proper nourishment, Beaver grows weaker until finally he refuses even water. Coyote paces outside by the pond, frightened that his friend might die, when he notices the differences between his den and Beaver’s dam, he realizes how different coyotes and beavers are. Exploring this helps Coyote see beyond himself and recognize the nature and needs of another being. Like animals, we have physical needs but we also have emotional, mental and spiritual needs. We recognize animals by observing what they do; we know ourselves by doing what we love.

Connecting Through Cleansing Written By Shelby Molchan, Certified Colon Hydrotherapist
R
ecycling, green bags, park and river clean-up’s are great ways to help the environment and connect with Mother Earth. But, if your internal environment is polluted you may not be feeling the kind of serene spiritual connection you desire. Toxic matter stored in the body bogs down energy and fogs the mind, making it difficult to really “feel” the beauty in a perfect spring day. An overburdened liver impedes emotional chi from flowing freely in the body and can manifest as quick temper, negativity and a sense of hopelessness. If the colon is impacted with decaying fecal matter, toxins are leaching out into the blood stream leading to allergies, irregular bowels, unexplained pain and lethargy, muddled thinking as well as the inability to lose weight. Cleansing is an ideal way to improve your energy at its source and connect to your spiritual center. We all have heard the saying “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” and while that saying can be associated with cleaning your kitchen, it also relates to cleaning your personal “house,” the body you live in. Jesus, Buddha, Gandhi, and other spiritual examples of the past, used fasting as a way to cleanse the body. Two thousand years ago, Jesus found it important to fast to cleanse his body and spirit and at that time fertilizers, pesticides and genetiApril 2011
cally modified foods were not a factor in his world. We are involuntarily exposed to pollutants and toxins daily just by way of living. So, it makes sense that during these times of spiritual re-awakening and reconnecting to natural cycles of life, that fasting and cleansing would be an important part of achieving that spiritual growth. If you’re not receiving the spiritual gratification and positive energy you are striving for, the problem could be internal pollution. Depending upon your particular symptoms, bowel, Candida and liver cleanses can be of great benefit. Removing toxins from an overburdened body can improve skin conditions, bloat, gas and relieve headaches. Using Colon Hydrotherapy as a method of cleansing is particularly effective as the body becomes extremely hydrated by the process. Since our cells are energy conductors, they require water. Hydration improves the cell’s ability to receive nutrition and expel waste. So maintaining hydration at the cellular level improves the effectiveness of the detoxification process and allows for the free flow of energy. The outward effects of Colon Hydrotherapy are almost immediately noticed as the improvement of the condition of skin, hair and nails. Directly following a Colon Hydrotherapy session, most people notice almost immediately an outward sort of “glow,” and the improvement of mental outlook has been described as a “lift of spirits,” which can be attributed to the removal of accumulated toxins and good hydration.

Since approximately 70 percent of the immune system resides in the gut, cleansing can improve a person’s immunity, and we know that when we are feeling strong and healthy it is much easier to have a positive outlook on life and sail through the day with good, sustained energy. Other forms of cleansing toxins from the body include ionic foot baths, which promote the release of toxins through the pores in the feet and balance “Chi.” Skin brushing and lymphatic massage keep lymph matter flowing freely throughout the body, and improve the skins ability to release toxins. Using a Neti pot to wash nasal passageways helps to reduce allergies and keep sinuses free of excess mucous. Ear candling removes built up wax and pollutants from the ear. Buddha said “To keep the body in good health is a duty…otherwise we shall not be able to keep the mind sound and clear.” With a clear mind, we are better able to connect with ourselves and to the beauty of Mother Earth that surrounds us. Cleansing helps with all of that. HB References: 1. Watson, Brenda, C.N.C. The Detox Strategy. Free Press; 1 edition. March, 2008 2. Rose, Natalie. The Raw Food Detox Diet. Harper Paperbacks. ometimes spirituality is like a drug; you get high on your beliefs. They pump you up, ease your conscience, or provide simple answers to complex problems. But then one day you realize that the answers aren’t very good answers, and getting high feeds your ego more than your soul.
New A ge

One problem with this belief system is that it sells you short as a human being. In fact, you are capable of far more evil than you probably give yourself credit for. And this capacity for evil isn’t just caused by a lack of nurturance as a child, or out of a fear of success, or a fear of your divinity. You are capable of evil because you are human, and human beings aren’t born whole, they are born unconscious. If you live life well, you become more whole through the process.
There is a trend, seen most strongly in New Age writing, to deny or ignore the dark side of human nature. New Age philosophy tells you that human beings are by nature loving creatures that turn bad only when they have been hurt in some way. If everyone was raised in an environment of unconditional love there would be no selfishness or violence, no greed, power struggles or illness. You are told that your true essence is divine and, indeed, that you are God. You come into the world perfect, and only poor parenting or hurtful life events cause you to behave in selfish or antisocial ways. Sin is nothing more than ignorance of your divine and perfect nature. The New Age viewpoint is that there are just two fundamental emotions in life: love and fear. All other emotions are derived from these two.
You are capable of evil because, like all people, you are egocentric. The more egocentric you are, the more out of sync you are likely to be with your soul and God. If you find yourself on a power trip, the cause isn’t always to be found in fear or an unconscious “inferiority complex.” It could be that you just like the feeling of power. It is a high for your ego. You can be a glutton not because you aren’t getting enough emotional nourishment. Maybe you like being a glutton and have never felt that motivated to change your behavior. You may abuse alcohol or drugs not just because you are spiritually starved. In fact, it could be the other way around. Perhaps you are spiritually starved because you opt for quick and simple solutions, rather than those requiring sacrifice and selfdiscipline. You may have an affair not because your spouse has been “emotionally unavailable.” Your infidelity may have been driven more by the excitement you feel in breaking the rules. After all,
These ideas are attractive. They soothe your ego and defend against the unpleasant reality of evil. In the New Age, evil is an illusion and has no independent presence or activity in the universe. Hate and cruelty are ultimately caused by fear, not evil. In this respect, fear is the perfect fallback, as in: “I know I shouldn’t have raped that woman, but I was afraid of emotional intimacy.” Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

your ego prefers to make rules rather than follow them. Not only does evil arise from your human egocentricity, it also has a powerful and independent life of its own. Evil is the second-most formidable force you encounter in life, and if you take a Pollyanna view of it, you are that much more likely to become its instrument. Jung once said that “not knowing acts like guilt.” This is especially true of those realities which you should be aware of but are not. The painful truth, the truth you don’t want to see, is that you collude with evil. You collude with it on an individual basis by choosing to remain ignorant of your shadow, or “dark side.” You collude with it by choosing not to explore the motives, methods and masquerades of your own egocentricity. You choose to remain unconscious.
“You can do good, and you can do evil, and part of your job on earth is to figure out which is which”.
This is the problem with candy store spirituality: it tastes good, but it does not nourish. It is not fun to look into a mirror and see a Hitler staring back at you. But, to not look into the mirror is to not own the whole of who you are; the beautiful and the repugnant, the blessed and the evil. You diminish yourself when you do not shoulder the truth of your larger being. You can do good, and you can do evil, and part of your job on earth is to figure out which is which. HB
You also collude with evil at a collective level. For example, as a nation we collude with evil by continuing to abuse and exploit the earth, or by building a huge national debt that we will leave for our children and grandchildren (better they suffer than we). You collude with evil when you allow your government to wage war on behalf of corporations, or ignore issues of poverty and social injustice. You collude with evil by accepting the pre-packaged and pre-analyzed “news” of the mainstream media, when deep inside you know that if you aren’t being lied to, you sure as hell aren’t getting the whole truth. You collude with ignorance in order to remain ignorant. You collude with certain spiritual beliefs so as to avoid a more humbling encounter with your soul and God.

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK
vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis
Horoscope for Health | April - 2011
A
pril. Through most of April, the emphasis of the planets shifts to Aries. The Sun will be in the hottest of the fire signs through March 20, joining Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Eris. That is a lot of Aries, appropriate enough for springtime here in the Northern Hemisphere--full of passion and impulse. This is going to require some adult tempering. This particular combination of planets can lead to a kind of militancy of opinion, or actual aggression. Mercury retrograde from March 30 through April 23 can add many layers of confusion or misinformation, so the fighting energy has high probability of being misdirected. This is definitely the month to read The Way of the Spiritual Warrior and definitely not the month to start a war or initiate action in court. Invest your energy into cleaning closets and your attic. Aries (March 20-April 19) Every action you take in the outer world of your life is going to have a corresponding sense of going deeper into yourself. Every time you go deeper into yourself you’re likely to experience some impulse to express yourself in the world. The two are not only related, they are directly connected. While you may feel at times that something is too deep to express, or too superficial to explore the inner meaning of, I assure you that both processes are proceeding at the same basic pace, and will feed one another nicely. It is a truly meaningful advent that you are making the connection, and the truth is you’ve been doing so for a while. If you’re looking for one significant reason why your life is so different now, that would be a great place to start your investigation. Taurus (April 19-May 20) Consider how your ideas about gender influence your ideas about your profession. You may feel that there is some factor working against you, something such as sex discrimination, but this may have its roots in what you were taught about yourself and therefore what you believe about yourself. So the issue is in a sense political because it involves the structure of society, but there is a deeply personal level in that we tend to make real what we believe about ourselves. Does anybody remember the Equal Rights Amendment? One of the most puzzling aspects of American history to me is how this could have possibly failed. Here is the salient text: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” I mean, how basic does it get? Gemini (May 20-June 21) This may be a wild month for you socially; you could have a lot of fun and you could get into a lot of trouble. I suggest you make real decisions, particularly about what you say. You may have never heard me say the word “gossip” anywhere in the last thousand Planet Waves columns, but I suggest you not partake this month, even a little. Mercury Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
retrograde in the hotly charged up social angle of your chart is a warning that even a small misstep, exaggeration or deception could cause a lot of problems. Indeed, you must be careful and conscious when you say anything to anyone. And passing along the advice of one of my favorite corrupt politicians, always stay three drinks behind the crowd. If you can manage all that you will have a heck of a lot of fun. Cancer (June 21-July 22) In all matters involving your profession or any kind of aspiration, be mindful of the random chance or odd contact that can help you get where you need to be. The world will have a way of yielding its secrets: who to speak to, what to ask, what to say at the right time. When you’re not certain, do a little research and/or wait patiently for more information. It will have a way of blossoming on the branches like so many flowers of the springtime. While Mercury is retrograde, I suggest you pause before making any decisions, or making any commitments in writing--even things like applications, or finalizing a new resume. Do the legwork and then wait until the end of the month to actually start the process. A delay of a few weeks could save you a few years. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Be aware that someone you care about is deeply sensitive at the moment, and their response to a situation that arises for them is unlikely to be a response to you. Don’t take it that way--if you do, you may get more deeply involved than you were planning on and indeed than you deserve to be. That said, you’re unlikely to be able to ignore the situation. I can give you a clue. The person is having a challenging time dealing with a childhood trauma involving their mother, which may in turn involve her daughter. The charts caution that there is a veil of denial thrown over the whole thing, which may make the emotions involved extremely slippery. Here is the question: what does any of this have to do with you? Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) 36
April 2011
This is the month to be careful with money. Your fortunes could turn on the point of a pen; I will repeat the oft-cited standard advice for Mercury retrograde: beware of what you sign. I would go so far as to suggest you avoid writing your name inside the cover of a book, and if you do, write with pencil. Be cautious even with verbal commitments, such as promises and offers of favors. Be equally careful about what is promised to you; you’re naturally skeptical and whatever is offered is likely to look really good. That said, the astral weather is extremely good for detective work. It’s so good, all you’ll have to do is let people open up and reveal their secrets. You might have some great fun sharing a few of yours with the right person, but please don’t put them on Facebook.
sarily connected the two. The thing that may be pushing your patience and invoking paranoia is your desire to feel safe, comfortable and secure. We live in edgy times and you will probably feel a lot better if you allow yourself to explore the edge. You may think that’s the last place you want to go, but if you’re looking for some peace of mind, you will need to push yourself into unfamiliar territory. Every cell in your body wants to go there. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Hugh Prather once wrote, “It takes ego to see ego.” Therefore, I am loath to trust any statement about someone being egotistical or driven by self-importance. It may be true; heck, it’s usually true, but you also have to look at the source when anyone makes such an accusation. Therefore, if anyone should make such a comment about you, notice who is talking and where they’re coming from before you decide the statement is right. Our society has a little narcissism problem, coupled with a self-esteem problem, and the two usually go together. Your current primary mission in life is to feel good about your existence, and along the way you’ll need to get your concepts sorted out. The truly rare commodity is selfrespect--and since we’re on the topic, that’s the real taboo.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) How much is too much of a good thing? You had better talk about it with the people who matter the most. You have a number of relationships brewing and they seem to have a diversity of appeals. There’s some awesome potential for exchange on many levels. Yet you may wonder if they conflict with one another, or whether it’s appropriate to be close (or even attracted) to more than one person. Here is where integrity comes in, mainly in the form of open communication. You will go a long way toward maintaining balance by repeatedly asking how various people around you feel. As long as they have their say, you will have a sense of stability and experience some extraordinary moments of contact.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Pay attention and you’ll make several significant discoveries about money and resources this month--which will provide you with proof of how clever and successful you are. Here are some thoughts: Consider your wealth in more diverse terms than cash. It includes any commodity with any worth to someone else. You don’t need to think it’s especially valuable in cash terms; you need to notice that others do. Next, remember that fortunes are made and lost at points of decision; therefore, pay attention every time you’re deciding something. Last, this is the time in life to make sure that the ways you attract wealth are directly aligned with your values. “Selling out” works only for people who have nothing worthwhile to begin with. Thankfully you are in no such situation. HB
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) One thing I suggest you do this month is delegate any work that anyone can do as well as or better than you. This will serve two basic purposes--you’ll get to have more fun, and you won’t push yourself to the point of exhaustion. You’ll stay healthier and get more done and have weekends and evenings to yourself. Otherwise you run the risk of working yourself into madness, getting less done, and pushing your health past that certain edge where you know you shouldn’t go. You just need the presence of mind to set aside your pride and ask people to take on tasks that you don’t want or that you’re not so good at. This is the trick--keep what you’re best at and what you like the most. Then tell me if you like this method.
THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. Eric Francis Coppolino, founder and editor of Planet Waves, is a professional astrologer and journalist. A pioneer in the field of new planet discoveries, he has worked with clients and written about astrology for wide audiences since 1995. Read Eric Francis daily at PlanetWaves.net.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Many of your best ideas will come from what most people think of as mistakes. So if you’re on a project or in a conversation or developing an idea and you do something “wrong,” or if you get confused, see if maybe you’ve actually got the better idea. By the way this is where most people shut down their creative process. True creativity can seem like a bunch of mishaps that lead from one idea to the next. The rational mind of a normal person wants everything to line up and be perfect, and come out exactly as planned. Art is what happens in the state of mind halfway between intention and neglect. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Security has become such a priority these days that nearly anyone can get away with anything. Your whole concept of what makes you feel safe is being turned on its head, and you may feel stressed out--even though you haven’t necesApril 2011

he month of April is all about our Earth! It is a very important month because without Earth, we really couldn’t be alive! So this month especially, I’m giving back; I want to show that I do care and am thankful for all the things Earth gives us! During the month of April, I am pledging to recycle more, maybe plant a few trees and a garden; I will even get a group of my friends together and pick up trash around my neighborhood. What do you pledge? Connect with nature… If you workout at a gym or health club with your family, now is the time to take it outdoors! Get healthy in a natural environment. Here are some quick tips on how to begin a jogging/circuit workout: • First figure out where you are going to run, keeping safety and distance in mind. It’s a good idea to include your parents in this decision. Also, look for trails/sidewalks that go near parks. You’ll need a bench, table or picnic table for some of the exercises. • Map out your route. You can do this online too: www. mapmyrun.com or www.walkjogrun.net or www.runningmap.com, to name a few. • Start your workout with a light jog, keeping a steady pace. When you reach a park bench or table, or chair, use that as a marking spot for future workouts. At the first bench, do some triceps dips. • Triceps dips: sit on the chair or park bench and extend legs out in front of you. Lower yourself down, and then back up and so on. Do this work out for about 60 seconds. • Then you keep jogging at your steady pace once done with your triceps dips. When you reach your next park bench (place marker number two), you can do duck walks. • Duck walks: squat down and put your hands behind your head. Take steps forward (while keeping the squat position); keep taking steps forward for 60 seconds. • Start jogging again. Once you get to another park bench that is your third and final marker. Do extend, swing, pulses. • Extend, swing, pulses: hold the back of the park bench and extend one leg up (the higher you go the better results), then rotate that leg side to side. Then, switch to your other leg and so on. • After this workout, start jogging back toward your home. When you are about one to two blocks away, sprint the remaining distance! You can increase this distance as you build endurance over the next few workouts. Good luck and have fun! HB Remember, you should always give back to the Earth and this month, do a little extra! No one really knew English, so Vladimir did his best to translate for the interviews. One of the questions that came up during the interview was, when exactly did I plan to depart; they wanted to cover the assembly of the kayak, my equipment and of course, the departure. Had I known then what lay ahead, maybe I would have waited a month. For now, we agreed to meet at 10:00 h next morning. The following day Vladimir and his chauffeur brought me and all my equipment to an island in the Yenisey River, where sporting events typically take place. A crowd had gathered there already. Maybe I should enjoy all that company, as I would soon be alone for a long time on this river, the fifth longest river on earth. This time, a professional interpreter had been invited. My kayak was brand new. It takes a little doing to arrange the appropriate wooden pieces into a frame that then is inserted into a PVC covered canvass hull. My new friends basically figured it out for me while I was busy answering questions and smiling into the cameras. Besides sharing the basics as to how I envisioned to camp, prepare food, fish etc., I related to the mission of peace I consider myself a part of. “You are my friends and just like you I have friends all over the world. No government has the right to tell me that any of them are to be my enemies. If we were to allow our governments to straighten out the messes they themselves produce and disallow them to abuse us for their agendas, we would have what we all want, namely peace.” In similar words, that was my message, to over a million Russians. HB To be continued… With joyful passion for peace and health,

e all have a story. I have a story. It’s a similar story heard everywhere. My life was unhappy; I hit bottom and spent too much time there. But, it’s what I did with it that matters. I finally started to look at myself. In looking at myself, I began asking myself questions. What happened? Where did things go wrong? Continuous questions kept showing up, none of which got me closer to an answer. But something really cool was starting to happen, without me even realizing it. I was in the beginning steps of looking at myself. As time passed, I found myself tuning to three questions that stuck with me. Why do I think the way I think? Why do I feel the way I feel? Why do I behave the way I behave? I was turning to friends more and more, asking for their insight. I was really lucky to know those who were willing to listen. Through these conversations with my friends, we realized that I should seek out more sources. Especially since I was starting to question things of my existence and what it means to be alive. I started reading books and listening to anyone’s recommendations. Then I found Emei Qigong; this vast, ancient, complex system of mind, body and spirit. I was so fortunate to meet Grandmaster Fu and receive an introduction of Emei Qigong in such easy to follow terms that even I could see and understand.
So what is Emei Qigong? Emei qigong offers the idea that we are conceived into existence pure and unaffected. Then, life starts to take place and its effects can be harmful and hurtful. I spent so much time in pursuit of dreams, but they were never my dreams. I found myself saying, “this isn’t my life.” In qigong we are taught that our mind, body and spirit have a memory of this earlier time and place. Through use of the system of Emei Qigong and its movements and mind intention, one can tap into this memory and help the body do what it naturally knows how to do; to heal and restore itself. By gradually incorporating qigong into my day, I noticed how areas of my body started to loosen up, making it easier and more enjoyable to go about my day. It also helped to bring fourth any feelings from my past. Providing me with the chance to revisit and find resolution towards people and events I carried with me. This helped me find forgiveness and freed me of any ill will. Qigong helped me find and heal what lies within, and in doing so, revealed how I’m connected to what lies beyond. In many ways, I’m still the same person that I was before I started my pursuit of self, I am just happier. HB References: 1.

ecently, there has been renewed controversy surrounding the use of high dose intravenous vitamin C in the treatment of cancer.
carotene, selenium, zinc and other substances. The statistical analysis of their data revealed that about 40 percent of the cancer patients survived five years or more after the initiation of the regimen.
In the late 1970’s, Dr. Ewan Cameron and Dr. Linus Pauling published numerous papers, and a book, Cancer and Vitamin C, on the response of cancer patients who received large doses of supplemental vitamin C. They concluded that supplemental vitamin C is of benefit to most cancer patients. The benefit ranged from an increased sense of well-being to a prolongation of survival time in terminal patients, to rare complete remissions.
Dr. Kedar Prasad of the University of Colorado, and his colleagues, advocate the use of a very similar combination of B vitamins, large doses of vitamin C and E and beta-carotene for cancer patients undergoing either chemotherapy or radiation. In a recent article published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Dr. Prasad presented results from cell culture experiments demonstrating that the killing effect of many cancer drugs or radiation, on mouse and human cancer cells, is enhanced in the presence of vitamins C or E.
Then, in 1979 and 1985, Drs. Edward Creagan and Charles Moertel, of the Mayo Clinic, published studies showing no benefit from supplemental vitamin C on survival times.
In another extensive article published in Alternative Medicine Review in 1999, Drs. Lamson and Brignall noted that “considerable data exists, showing increased effectiveness of many cancer therapeutic agents, as well as a decrease in adverse effects, when given concurrently with antioxidants.”
It must be pointed out however, that the Mayo studies were carried out on patients that had undergone extensive chemotherapy and the dose was a very low 10 grams, given orally. The Scottish studies used much higher doses of 5075 grams given IV as an adjunct to conventional treatment.
A more recent study at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, showed that two hours of exposure to vitamin C, significantly cut the survival of ovarian, pancreatic and brain cancer cells. Similar results were seen when cancer-ridden mice were injected with vitamin C. The therapy halved the growth of aggressive tumors, killing cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue unharmed.
In the early 1990’s, Dr. Pauling published two papers with Dr. Abram Hoffer, who developed a regimen for use in cancer patients that includes B vitamins, vitamin E, large doses of vitamin C, beta Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

Help For Burning Pain or Numbness of the Hands and Feet Written By Dr. Martin P. Rutherford, DC
Most people who suffer from numbness, burning or sharp pain in the hands or feet, also known as peripheral neuropathy, are not aware of the full spectrum of treatment options. Most believe that they have to take medications that give some relief, have side effects or just don’t work; or, that there isn’t anything else they can do. For the record, it’s not only diabetics, post chemotherapy patients and MS patients that get neuropathies. There is a myriad of different causes of peripheral neuropathies (PN). PN is a problem with the nerves that carry information to and from the brain to the hands, legs and feet. This produces pain, loss of feeling and inability to control muscles. But, already there’s a problem with this definition--just because you feel a symptom in your hands or feet doesn’t mean that’s where the problem is. PN is in fact a complex web of neurological, hormonal, immunological, mechanical and/or nutritional problems. The pain of PN is only one of the ways in which these imbalances are impacting your health. Categories of PN fall into eight major and numerous subsidiary categories. 1. Mechanical conditions from injury, pressure on the feet, overworking a part of the body, low back disc and stenosis conditions, cervical stenosis conditions. 2. Vascular: Blockages of vessels or hemorrhage in nerve tissue in the legs or feet. 3. Infectious conditions: Secondary to aftermath of shingles, diphtheria, polio, tetanus, or leprosy. 4. Toxic: From heavy metal like arsenic, mercury and lead; chemical from organic phosphates, drug or alcohol abuse (past or present), vaccinations as in Guillain Barre Syndrome. 5. Metabolic from acidosis, vitamin deficiencies, diabetes, and other blood sugar issues, hemachromatosis, and too many other imbalances to list in the space. 6. Electrical exposure to high voltage over a period of time. 7. Electrical imbalances in the right parietal lobe of the brain. 8. Autoimmune and allergic responses to specific foods against the nerve tissues of the feet. As you can see, there are multiple possible causes to assess and rule out in order to devise the appropriate approach to each individual’s PN. Furthermore, you can see from above that there is no “one size fits all” (Neurotonin, Lyrica, Tarsal Tunnel Release, Glueophage, etc) treatment for peripheral neuropathy Life’s a journey. cases because every case may be one or a combination of several of the above listed causes. You must treat the patient and not the diagnosis, as the diagnosis of PN tells us there’s pain in the feet and hands, but not which of the 20 or more causes above need to be addressed; and most (not all) of the causes can be addressed without drugs or surgery. So to properly assess and treat PN, each system of the body and all potential causes must be reviewed and evaluated. Triggers must be eliminated and problems and imbalances in the brain, hormonal, G.I. and immune systems must be corrected. The various imbalances must be tested for and addressed in a fashion unique to that individual, in order to develop a coordinated non-drug metabolic and neurological approach for their specific cause. If this is not done, the sufferer often will spend months and years going from practitioner to practitioner evaluating the various above-mentioned “pieces of the puzzle” one at a time. Although the patient may occasionally “luck out” by accidentally addressing the correct cause, this dys-organized approach to a problem as complex as peripheral neuropathy is usually doomed to fail and is the reason why medications and surgery yield poor long-term results when utilized as the only treatment options for the PN patient. Annual Exams, Cervical Cancer Screening and More Submitted By Planned Parenthood Mar Monte
exam includes manual breast exams, cholesterol, blood sugar and thyroid. In addition, practitioners often discuss safe sexual behavior and risks, contraception options and healthier life styles. The Annual exams, which include cervical cancer screening, are done in line with the age recommendation from the ACOG for frequency of Pap Tests: • Young women do not need the cervical cancer screening until aged 21, no matter their sexual activity. • Women 21-29 only need cervical cancer screening biannually. • At age 30-64 women should have annual pap smears, as this is the most likely time to develop and detect cervical cancer. HOWEVER, if a woman has three normal Pap results in a row, she may reduce the cervical cancer screening to every two or three years. Women with compromised immune systems may need more FREQUENT exams. • Patients who have undergone a total hysterectomy (cervix removed), need not get a Pap Smear. Those who have only undergone a subtotal hysterectomy (cervix remains), still need cervical cancer screenings. • By age 70, with consistent normal Pap results and a decade of clear cancer, women can forgo the Pap Smears.
Y
ou’d be surprised at the number of women who don’t know that their Pap Test is just a part of the recommended Annual Exam, because cervical cancer is not the only health issues being examined. The recent change in guidelines for appropriate age, by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, adds to the confusion. Planned Parenthood recommends an Annual Pelvic Exam for all women, from menstruation on. The pelvic exam may or may not include the Pap Test, which tests for cervical cancer screening. The rest of the pelvic exam is meant to check for the health of the reproductive organs, determine birth control devices if needed), check for vaginal infections or sexually transmitted infections (STI). The rest of the Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
The guidelines changed for a few reasons: women who have never been sexually active, or in long term monogamous relationships with regular normal Pap Tests, are less likely to be exposed to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and are not likely to con44

tract cervical cancer. The shift from precancerous to cancerous cells takes about five to seven years, so the low risk women still may detect cancerous changes with the new guidelines, but not undergo unnecessary Pap Tests.

But every woman should still do her Annual Pelvic Exam. Planned Parenthood has provided these vital services for women, at an affordable rate, for more than 90 years through federal funding. Our health centers provide 36 percent of the Title X, America’s family planning funding, with only 21 percent of the funds in 11 percent fewer locations than other subsidized health centers…and the most efficiently. Chiron Files Spring Cleaning
Written By Eric Francis
D
ear Friend and Reader:
Cleaning is a healthy activity for humans, particularly here in the Western world where our lives become cluttered with both stuff and activity. This month there is an unusual surge of Aries energy as Mercury, the Sun and Mars (the fast movers) join slow-movers Jupiter, Uranus and Eris. This represents an exuberant burst of energy that might be directed at throwing away the past, embarking on new enterprises and asserting oneself in just about any possible way--those six planets cover a lot of subject matter. However, there’s a distinction that must be made between throwing off the past and embarking on the future. Aries is all about new beginnings, and Uranus--which has arrived to stay for the next seven years--is one of the most revolutionary and forward-thinking planets of the lot. Yet consider this: Mercury is retrograde between March 30 and April 23. Mixed in with all this burst-forward energy, we have a reminder to consider the past. That reminder may come in elements or ideas of the past that persist; and
it may come in the form of hesitancy about moving forward because we have those ideas. In either event, the result may be the sense of a frustrated beginning. This month, anyway, patience is going to be a virtue. Lack of patience could have a weakening effect, and there is a real risk of bad decisions that could have lasting results. I strongly advise delaying important decisions--and even seemingly minor decisions--until after Mercury is direct on April 23. The challenge will be that because of Jupiter’s presence, there will be an exaggeration effect that makes things seem more important than they are. This will have a few hotspots, including April 11 and May 11 (give a three-day range for each date), which might have roots back to something you did on or around March 15. Here is how to make this astrology work for you: o Consider the past as an active process. There is likely to be something there that will benefit from your understanding. You may have a misconception, false information, exaggerated information or some significant missing bit of data that you need to know about. Delays in progress or any setbacks in commencing a new project are opportunities to do this. If you find yourself stuck, go on a hunt for the missing information. It may be looking right at you. o

past idea of who you are that conflicts with the growth or progress you’re making. An outdated self-concept may be the problem. In order to address that outdated self-concept you would have to know what it is. So take the opportunity to find out. You have time; on the shortterm scale, there is no rush. Mercury retrograde is a short (if challenging) useful phase of review. o Consider the differences between how you perceive yourself and how others perceive you. Self-understanding is basic to being a self. With all this new energy moving into Aries, self-actualization is going to become all the rage, just as if it never went out of style. I’m not sure it was ever in style, but back when Chiron was in Aries in the late 1960s and early 1970’s, it was definitely something that was available. A book like Games People Play could sell hundreds of thousands of copies. o Speaking of Chiron, its presence in Pisces continues to be a meaningful counterbalance to all of this expressive, me-conscious energy coming from Aries. Chiron in Pisces is an invitation to look within. Chiron in introspective Pisces is a continuous invitation to explore one’s inner awareness and every now and then, consider that there exists a world other than the one you can see.
