hat do those words mean? Does it mean we shouldn’t lie, but instead be truthful in all of our dealings? Does it mean we should be true to ourselves, even if the outcome hurts someone else? Does it mean we should watch our diet and lifestyle so that our heart is healthy? Does it mean we should watch our thoughts, especially how we speak about ourselves, only showing ourselves kindness and love.

Some people may call that being selfish, to love yourself first. Some people may say you are being unfair. Perhaps they say that because they do not love themselves.

Yet, how can we know how to love and how can we share love if we don’t know how to love ourselves wholly? To love our self when we make mistakes; to love our self when we succeed and when we fail; to accept that we are not perfect, nor are we suppose to be perfect. That kind of respect may be the definition of unconditional love.

he pomegranate. A unique fruit, bearing bejeweled seeds in red that dress up simple fare like no other! A perfect addition to salads, bruschetta, desserts and meat dishes alike. They also lend themselves well to smoothies, juices and, of course, the au naturale “out of hand” method.

I think living with heart means all of the above. Living a life of integrity has nothing to do with being fair. Our actions should be ethical, and setting boundaries is one way to show others we value ourselves and the life we lead. We can share acts of love with others by being kind to one another, by being respectful of one’s time and space, by using manners and by being respectful of one’s skills and talents.

One of my favorite uses: bubbly bling! Be it holiday parties, social mixers or a little valentine nosh, add pomegranate seeds to a glass of champagne and voila, you have a sparkling beauty in your hand!

Enjoy this February issue, it houses many thought provoking articles. I chose this cover image because to me it represented a fresh start and a healthy heart.

But wait, there’s more. Pomegranates are chock-full of hearthealthy antioxidants, working to lower your “bad” cholesterol (LDL). According to the Mayo Clinic, they actually contain antioxidants at higher levels than many other fruit juices!

Happy Valentine’s Day! Best in Health and Happiness,

So, eat-up and juice-up…this fun fruit packs and delivers a diverse punch to any mindful eating plan!

Cutting Edge Medicine Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

I

n 2008, medical pioneer C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. said “We are on the verge of a Medical and Health Renaissance, one in which a comprehensive and energetic analysis is coupled with an equally comprehensive correction of the imbalances.”

To be sure, this is not a rejection of the knowledge we have about organs, cells and organic chemistry. What it is revealing is a much deeper understanding of the processes and interactions that underlie and lead to these things.

What this means is we are coming to the end of the era when addressing the full range of human ailments means mainly using chemical substances (drugs) in conventional medicine.

This led to a whole new generation of supplements and treatments that can rebuild the energy production pathways on a sub-cellular level, to bring the body back to optimal health if it has developed “dis-ease” for one reason or another.

New research and more sensitive testing are revealing the truth of what some ancients said, thousands of years ago. We are more than just a physical body run by the brain consisting of a bunch of chemical reactions.

There is actually a peer-reviewed journal, Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine Journal, designed to provide guidelines, scientific background and scientific credibility for subtle-energy applications, and a venue for technical papers involving theory and application of energy in the field of medicine.

When we begin to peel back the layers and go deeper and deeper into the true nature of our bodies, we find a reality that few of us contemplate on a daily basis. Tissues and organs give way to cells, then to molecules and atoms, which, when you probe more, give way to fuzzy clouds of subatomic particles that pop back and forth between matter and energy waves. Modern physics revealed that our bodies, at their foundation, are an incomprehensible number of particles held together by an energy field.

The scientific paradigm is shifting. Bioenergetics and biophysics are blossoming disciplines that could eventually totally revamp the practice of medicine.

References: 1. issseem.org (Subtle Energies and Energy Medicine Journal)

What was once considered too “out there” for serious scientific consideration is proving itself to be the very basis of our existence! Biology is moving beyond the study of the matter of life and beginning to consider how fields, energies and information shape and direct life itself.

Where does health start failing and what we call “disease” start to take a foothold? Up until now, the world of energy fields and particles has taken a back seat to consideration of DNA, cells and chemicals. Science is now teaching us that we ignore these non-physical realms to our peril. They are, in fact, the building blocks that actually create the physical reactions. Visit www.HBmag.com

Nutritional Influences

Bad fats and oils breed inflammation and cancer. Trans fats in margarine, as well as highly processed and heated oils such as commercial soy bean oil, canola oil and corn oil, are dead oils and can’t be properly incorporated into our 100 trillion cell membranes. Fish oil supplementation are all rancid and are the wrong length of fatty acids, which are not anti-inflammatory. Good oils such as primrose oil, flax oil, sunflower oil, pumpkin seed oil and coconut oils, are much better anti-inflammatory substances. Sugar and refined carbohydrates cause inflammation.

Books have been written about Integrative, Homeopathic, Functional Medicine, Orthomolecular, Nutritional and Alternative approaches to preserve heart health and treat heart dysfunction. It is possible to improve every aspect of heart health, from atrial fibrillation (A fib) to chest pain (angina pectoris), coronary artery disease and heart failure. Elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels can also be improved, as well as high blood pressure. Although the cholesterol theory of heart disease has been widely debunked in favor of inflammatory causes, traditional medicine still relies on toxic drugs, which never answer the question of why the disease began in the first place. It never begins because of lack of drugs, although it is important to integrate them in the patient’s treatment program while rebuilding the system.

Magnesium supplementation is important as it is difficult to find sufficient amounts in the standard American diet (SAD). Magnesium is extraordinarily important for steady heart rhythm and prevention of blood vessel spasm, which is the last event in a heart attack or stroke.

The heart loves B vitamins, especially B1, thiamine. Coenzyme Q10 is of great effect in congestive heart failure, when the heart doesn’t pump well and fluid builds up in the lungs, abdomen and ankles. Vitamin K2 and the calcium paradox. K2 takes calcium out of the arteries and puts it into the bones. Calcium disrupts energy production in the cells and leads to heart disease, cancer and dementia. The heart loves B vitamins, especially B1, thiamine. Lack of thiamine causes heart failure such as Beri-Beri. This was epidemic in Japan after processing the husks, which contains the B1 off of rice to make it white. Niacin in its many forms is great for heart health. Toxicity Heavy metals including calcium, mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic and aluminum are involved with heart disease. Evaluation of metal toxicity can be easily measured by hair analysis. Patients with congestive heart failure have 20,000 times more mercury in their hearts than healthy young individuals. Mercury is a well-known nerve toxin, and if the nerves don’t work the heart can’t beat strongly. There are many chelating agents (from the Latin Chelos, the claw to grasp or bind), substances that remove heavy metals. In the Fallon and Fernley areas in Nevada, there are many patients with levels that are 16 or 17 times higher than the limit on toxicity. Arsenic damages everything. Aluminum is related to Alzheimer’s disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Medical Association), DMSA, DMPS, alpha lipoic acid, garlic, chlorella and cilantro. Herbs Cayenne pepper is a great treatment and emergency remedy for heart attacks and strokes. At the first sign of chest pain, or a visual disturbance (flashing lights from an early episode of reduced blood flow to the brain), take one or two caps of herbal cayenne orally or opened in warm water and drink quickly. By the count of 10, the pain will reduce and the visual changes will stop. It is an herbal anti-coagulant. It is quite amazing! Lumbrokinase and Nattokinase are powerful anticoagulants (blood thinners), which have many great qualities. Hawthorne berry (Crataegus) is a great heart tonic for chest pain, failure and arrhythmias. Berberine lowers triglycerides, cholesterol and blood sugar as well as drugs do. Cactus grande is great for chest pain (like an iron band) and rapid heart rate. Rauwolfia serpentina, Coleus forskohlii and Jiagulan leaf are great with extra potassium and magnesium for high blood pressure. Homeopathy There are dozens of homeopthics that help heart disease. Homeopathic Digitalis (much diluted Digitalis) is great for out of rhythm hearts and weak heartbeat. Spigelia, Convarlaria and Glononium (homeopathic nitroglycerine) are also commonly prescribed.

Many chelating substances are available to remove toxic metals, they include EDTA (recently established to be a credible agent for reducing heart disease in the Journal of the American

Rapid heart rate from adrenalin excess secondary to stress, low blood sugar or illness, can be ameliorated by progesterone cream rubbed on the wrists and forearms. It blocks the adrenalin, as do adrenal cortical hormone support, like a weekly adrenal complex shot, which keeps the blood sugar steady. Thyroid supplementation lowers cholesterol levels even in the face of normal thyroid blood tests. When I was in Medical School in the 1960s, if one had an elevated cholesterol level it was automatically assumed to be caused by low thyroid functioning.

Y

Here’s what we found:

ears ago, Dr. Randall Gates, Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, and myself, a practicing certified functional medicine practitioner, combined our disciplines to create a discipline capable of evaluating and successfully treating the complex of multiple systems breakdowns that create chronic diseases and chronic pain (I.e. as peripheral neuropathy, fibromyalgia, auto immune diseases, dizziness, vertigo, balance problems etc). To accomplish this task, it was necessary to understand brain, thyroid, bowel, immune and hormonal dysfunction. At no time during our research did we ever delve into weight loss. But a few years ago, while developing our protocols, it dawned on us that virtually everyone who had (and was going through) our neuro-metabolic chronic pain program had lost weight. We interviewed several of our patients and each person indicated they had previously lost the ability to lose weight--no matter what they did. They were surprised they had lost the weight even more so because that’s not what they came in for, and it’s not what we were treating them for. We did, and still, put people on our baseline diet, which is not calorie restrictive nor meant to help patients to lose weight. Nor did we have them exercise, use daily weight scales, tape measures, etc.

Thyroid: Many had undiagnosed, misdiagnosed or poorly managed thyroid conditions. Eighty percent of them had Hoshimoto’s. These patients could not lose weight until this was handled. Blood Sugar: Many had diabetes type II or were heading that direction and their medications weren’t working. Many were even eating good diets. These patients also frequently had the above mentioned thyroid conditions as well as various intestinal bacteria and/ or endotoxemia (gut toxins), which were altering hormone function and the ability of their insulin to function properly. As a result, men were converting testosterone to estrogen and woman were converting estrogen to testosterone. These folks had zero chance at weight loss. Adrenals: Or, in this case, “stress.” All of them had 24/7 mini or full blown PTSD going on due to work or home. PTSD from verbal, physical or sexual abuse, or any “long term stress” that causes the adrenal glands to put out too many stress hormones (particularly cortisol) is a problem. Cortisol stimulates fat and blood sugar (carbohydrates) metabolism. This increases blood sugar, which further increases appetite to replace carbs and fats used for the fight/flight response (PTSD) problem. In today’s society, stress-causing situations are not equivalent to the primitive 20 minute fighting or fleeing the tiger response, which doesn’t require the body to use up a lot of energy. With today’s long term stress responses, or PTSD, cortisol ends up

We came to the conclusion that many, if not most, of the people in our community unable to lose weight were probably suffering from the same chronic conditions as our chronic disease and pain patients, or were at least experiencing dysfunction in the same organs causing our patients pain but manifesting in them instead as chronic obesity and the inability to lose weight. To test this hypothesis, we made efforts to attract about 25 patients to the office who were from 25 to 150 pounds overweight and couldn’t lose it.

causing the body to refuel after stress even when it doesn’t need to. This causes excess fat fuel (glucose), which turns to fat-causing excess fat storage. All the above referenced patients were suffering from chronic stress.

EAR CANDLING

Gut: Just know if you have leaky gut, food allergies (gut related), small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO), endotoxemia, dysbiosis, or lipopolysacharides in your blood stream they will combine to cause multiple systems such as your thyroid, blood sugar, adrenals, and immune system to dysfunction killing any chance of weight loss. All of the 25 patients who were evaluated suffered from various combinations of the above noted dysfunctions. They all lost all, or close to, the amount of weight they desired to lose. And most of you who can’t lose weight probably also have a combination of two or more of the above metabolic abnormalities.

Written By Karen Tenaglio | MTNV#1534

T

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

The Solution: Find out which of the above categories you fit into. Fix them. And you will lose weight.

The Moral Autonomy of the Psyche Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD

n his book, The Eternal Drama, Jungian psychologist Edward F. Edinger shares the dream of a man who was contemplating leaving his wife and children to pursue a relationship with a younger, wealthy woman: “I stand in the middle of the street looking up at gray, fastmoving skies. Behind the stormy façade I catch momentary glimpses of sunny, clear weather. Apparently I am deciding some sort of trip and the weather is an important factor in the decision. On my right a group of elders are gathered in discussion. I ask them, ‘Do you think I should leave? The sky seems clear to me.’ They shake their heads collectively. I refuse the advice and I begin to walk straight toward the dark clouds. I move two steps when the sky cracks open and a huge, brown hand reaches down, picks me up, and points me in the other direction.”

I especially like this dream for the way it so boldly reveals the moral autonomy of the psyche. This dream was not created by the man’s ego. It was not consciously chosen or devised. In fact, this spontaneous product of the unconscious carried a message the dreamer did not want to hear. It was the voice of a higher moral authority within him, a manifestation of God within the psyche. If the dreamer ignored the directive given to him and instead pursued his ego’s goals, the results would have been predictably negative. This is the case for all of us when we pursue a path that goes against that of our deepest self and destiny.

The deep reality is that we are morally accountable creatures, whether we want to be or not. This is the case because there is a moral structure to our psyche that transcends our conscious mind and conscious values, and is often in disagreement with them. We can run from this inner authority, but we cannot hide from it. We can try to fool ourselves with concepts like moral relativism, but dreams don’t lie, and life doesn’t lie, and they will always reflect back to you the moral code written upon your soul.

The psyche communicates through many channels, dreams being just one of them. If the dreamer ignored the guidance of his dream, he might have received more dreams of even greater warning: perhaps dreams of being chased, of dying children, or of being in a car crash. In his outer life, he might actually experience an auto accident. He may develop anxiety symptoms or have panic attacks. His relationships with his wife and children would become more disturbed. One of his children may get sick or become rebellious, mirroring his own attitude towards God. Some of these events would be causally related to his decision and actions. Others might be synchronistic. What is certain is that he will encounter a growing number of negative events and frustrations if he ignores the moral directives of his deeper self. Needless to say, his relationship with the wealthy woman would be ill-fated.

Moral relativism is the philosophical viewpoint that all moral perspectives are equally valid or “true.” This position rests upon the argument that because a person’s morality flows from his/ her value system, and because people have different values, all morality is subjective with none any better than another. While there is no denying that different people may possess different values, not all values are equivalent. For example, some values promote a life of psychological and spiritual development. Other value systems lead to a pretty much wasted life. Not all values are of equal worth, and neither are the moral perspectives that flow from them. But the deeper issue here, and perhaps the more paradoxical, is that what is right, or moral, for one person in a particular situation is not necessarily right for another person. This difference is not due to differences in their values systems, but, rather, extends from the fact that what is required for one person’s growth as an individual may not be the same as what is required for another’s. For example, quitting your job because you can’t get along with one of your co-workers could be a morally responsible decision if you are in the wrong line of work and the co-worker is just one more prodding from life to start doing what you really love. Conversely, your decision to quit could be morally irresponsible if life is trying to teach you to stand up for yourself and you are just trying to avoid this challenge by quitting.

SPOT EMOTIONAL MANIPULATION and Refuse to Play Along! Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

W

hat is emotional manipulation anyway? Manipulation is a behavior in which one person tries to change the mind of another without confronting them directly. Manipulators may use obligation, guilt, veiled threats or the fear of being inappropriate in order to get what they want from other people who are willing to give it to them. How can you tell if you’re being manipulated? The easiest way to spot it is to pay attention to how you feel when you’re around the other person. We all have an emotional guidance system, and when we feel powerless in the presence of someone, or when we feel like we’re tip-toeing around, hoping not to antagonize them, there’s a good chance you’re being manipulated by them, whether you realize it or not.

manipulation, they have gotten used to treating you a certain way and will be reluctant to change. Why should they change as long as they get what they want from you? People with manipulative tendencies are drawn to people who lack assertiveness. If you can’t say “no,” or if you have a hard time stopping yourself from doing all the work around the house or all the errands, or from doing favors for someone even if you don’t want to do them, in all probability you attract manipulators like moths to a flame. People who lack assertiveness have a tendency to bring out the manipulative side of anyone they interact with. Manipulators use different ways to make you feel insecure and to cause you to give in to their expectations, but instilling a feeling of guilt, obligation or inappropriateness is probably used most often. Many of us were trained to feel guilty if we didn’t follow through on what our parents or other authority figures, the church or the culture expected of us. Over many years that guilt may have become ingrained and may end up as a part of our personality until we feel guilty about everything that doesn’t go right. Somehow, we see it as all our fault! The manipulator jumps on that attitude and exploits it in any way that he or she can. There are often generational issues at play

Some of your fundamental human rights are: the right to be treated with respect; the right to express your feelings, opinions and wants; the right to set your own priorities; the right to say “no” without feeling guilty; the right to have opinions different than others; the right to take care of and protect yourself from mental, physical or emotional threats; and finally, the right to create your own happy, healthy life. These fundamental human rights represent your boundaries. If you have allowed your partner, or any other person, to get away with any kind of

By doing that, you will be retaining your personal power, not giving it away to a rigid person who isn’t willing to change in any way and who won’t shut up.

How can you tell if you’re being manipulated?

Learn to stand back and observe human behavior in every situation…at home, work or school. It’s often quite amusing, and as you stand back, away from the emotional storm, you’ll realize you’re becoming stronger, more self-confident, clearer about what you want, more empowered and more calm, cool and collected in every way. If that person doesn’t even try to change after you’ve given them enough chances, walk away for good. Their manipulative behavior may be too deeply ingrained for them to ever change. By staying in proximity to that person, they’ll break your morale, which would only lead to your getting used and manipulated by everyone else. Protect your Spirit. Protect your Mind. Protect your Heart. You are an Eternal Spiritual Being, living in this temporary physical body for the deliciousness of this experience. Be determined to make it as delicious as possible.

The easiest way to spot it is to pay attention to how you feel when you’re around the other person. here also. What was “appropriate” for the past generation may not be desirable or workable today. Parents, and sometimes spouses, have been trained as to what is appropriate and may still be expecting that behavior from you, forty years after they were programmed and conditioned to believe that only certain behaviors were “right.”

If you truly want to stop being manipulated in any relationship, you need to learn to take a stand. You need to start to believe that you’re worthy of the basic human rights listed above and calmly speak your mind about what you don’t want to do. Communication is vital. Talk to the manipulator and explain how you feel. Sometimes they may not even realize that they’re being manipulative. Confronting them will give you the courage to decline their requests when you feel manipulated. Recognize attempts at emotional blackmail by the emotions you feel. Identify those emotions as to what they are: sadness, anger, frustration, or whatever. Just know that each of those negative emotions are creating toxic chemicals and hormones in your own body if you stuff them down and don’t do something about them.

Consulting Hypnotist Teaches Self Acupressure

Identify them to yourself, decide you’re not going to put up with any kind of manipulation, speak your mind calmly and directly, then remove yourself from any confrontive storm that may be brewing. Often repeating the same phrase, no matter what the manipulator says, is effective: “I’m not interested in doing that.” To that the manipulator may say, “But that’s what we’ve always done.” “I’m not interested in doing that.” “But why? We really need to do that.” “I’m not interested in doing that,” and so on. Repeat the same phrase until the other person accepts your point of view or you realize that you’re talking to a brick wall. Then leave the room, the house, the car, the office, the situation. Calmly remove yourself from the emotional storm.

BALANCED HORMONES The Key to Feeling Slim, Sexy & Sane Written By Shannon Vigil, Holistic Health Coach supplementation to fill in the missing vitamins and minerals, and the right kind of exercise. These remedies can be the key to adjusting your hormones so they are working with you, instead of against you. The following are three of the most common hormone imbalances affecting modern women and steps on how to balance them naturally. #1 Cortisol: This hormone imbalance affects modern women the most. Cortisol is produced by your adrenal glands and comes to the rescue when you’re under stress. If you’re chronically stressed (and who isn’t) then your levels may be off. Stress management is key for balancing cortisol. Focus on relaxation and get optimum amounts of nutrients that are depleted under stress.

F

Recommendations for balancing cortisol:

act: women are interested in looking good. But it’s not the only thing we’re interested in. Research shows women are just as interested, or more, in feeling good. We want more energy, more calm, a better sex drive, and happy souls.

• Skip caffeine and alcohol. These two stimulates tax your already overworked adrenal glands. • Take a pharmaceutical-grade multivitamin and a fish oil supplement free from mercury.

Many women don’t realize that hormonal imbalances are keeping them from feeling that way. Instead, the modern woman feels exhausted, unhappy, overwhelmed, fat and cranky.

#2 Thyroid:

For the most part, these problems can’t be fixed with a low-carb diet and more spin classes. They are hormone problems. They are a sign that the equilibrium in a complex, interconnected system is off. The root cause of these problems is in how we eat, how we move, how we think, the lack of nutrients in our food and the overabundance of environmental toxins in our everyday lives.

The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland in your throat area. Its main functions are to maintain your metabolism and energy levels. It also helps you manage your weight and temperature. Support the thyroid function by optimizing important nutrients, such as selenium, copper, zinc, iron and vitamin D. Recommendations for balancing thyroid:

Of course, each woman has unique needs when it comes to hormones, but here’s the good news: No matter what the hormonal imbalance is, nutrition and lifestyle are the first steps toward a lasting solution! A whole foods meal-plan, targeted

Practice yin yoga two times per week.

• Skip the gluten. Celiac disease and gluten sensitivity can prevent you from absorbing nutrients that are crucial to thyroid function.

• Take a sunbath. Vitamin D is super important for thyroid balance. It can be difficult to get the proper amount with food alone. Try basking in the sun (without sunscreen) for 20 minutes a day to get your levels up. As long as you don’t overdo it your skin won’t be harmed. • Five minute breathing break. Chronic stress affects proper function of your hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which directly affect the thyroid. Practice breathing from your diaphragm for five minutes once a day to remind your nervous system that all is well. #3 Sex Hormones: Estrogen and Progesterone. These two sex hormones work together in a delicate balance during the course of your menstrual cycle. Estrogen keeps you juicy, joyous and feeling sexy. Progesterone is considered your natural antidepressant and anti-anxiety hormone. Problems occur when you have too much estrogen relative to progesterone. This is known as estrogen dominance and it affects 80 percent of women over 35. Recommendations for balancing sex hormones: • Vitamin C. It’s the only nutraceutical treatment proven effective for low progesterone. • Eat less red meat and dairy from conventionally-raised animals. These animals are often given synthetic hormones and antibiotics that lead to estrogen overload. Choose organic and grass-fed. • Fiber. Most women only consume about 13 grams per day compared to the recommended 35-45 grams. Try adding flax seeds or chia seeds to your meals or consider taking a fiber supplement.

THE MINDBODY PRESCRIPTION HEALING THE BODY, HEALING THE PAIN

By Dr. John Sarno, M.D. Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PL

I

n 1990, Dr. John Sarno wrote a best-selling book entitled Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection. It sold half a million copies because his process worked. In this latest work, he claims that backaches, slipped discs, headaches and other chronic pains are due to suppressed emotions, and that once the cause of the emotions are addressed, the pain will vanish. In The Mindbody Prescription, he explains how emotions including low self-esteem, guilt, anxiety or depression can stimulate the brain to manufacture physical symptoms such as fibromyalgia, hay fever, colitis, ulcers, repetitive strain injuries, migraine headaches and others. Sarno borrows unapologetically from Freud, who believed that these symptoms stem from the repression of emotions in the unconscious. The author also believes childhood trauma is a major source of emotional problems, which often leads to physical dysfunction. Sarno is well-versed on the neurophysiology of mindbody disorders and lists the symptoms of dozens of disorders that he believes are emotion-based. However, he believes if the client is unwilling to accept the idea that his/her mind may have something to do with health, he does not accept that person as a client. He understands belief has a great deal to do with healing, and without that, the client is compromised in his/her ability to heal using this method.

Visit www.HBmag.com

Dr. Sarno stopped seeing just anyone who wanted to see him in 1978. He had had 50 percent success in curing chronic back pain up until that time. In 1978, he decided he would take only people as patients who were open-minded enough to entertain the idea that their pain could be the result of very strong repressed emotions, such as anger. His success rate shot up to 80 percent, which is unheard of in the pain-abatement industry. Dr. Benjamin Sadock, M.D., professor and vice chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Medical Center has this to say, “Dr. Sarno describes in clearly written and understandable language how emotions influence and cause illness. He has cured thousands with debilitating chronic back pain and now offers curative approaches to other painful conditions. I highly recommend this book.” Dr. Sarno has a novel explanation for how our bodies react to one overwhelming trauma or series of traumas. We know our bodies have cellular memory. The memory of what has happened to us doesn’t reside only in the brain; it resides in the cells of our bodies as well. This idea is gradually being accepted in the mainstream medical profession, but massage therapists have been aware of it for decades. While engaging in massage, the therapist may be startled to see that the client has broken out

ARE YOU IN

in tears for no apparent reason, or even begun to remember and talk about things that happened long ago; things that had been seemingly forgotten. Massaging an arm or leg, back or shoulder, somehow brought back that memory so clearly it seemed to have happened only yesterday. That memory had been stored in the cells somehow and was now re-surfacing.

PHYSICAL PAIN? Is Stress causing your Pain? Have you been involved in an auto accident?

Dr. Sarno believes the mechanism of this process is that when, in everyday life, the unconscious becomes aware that the person is going to “blow up” emotionally because they finally had enough of whatever was making them angry or upset, (which may have been accumulating over many years) the unconscious mind finds a way to “distract” that person from their emotional upset (and save them from doing or saying something socially unacceptable) by restricting the oxygen carried by the blood to a certain part of the body. Maybe it is an area of the body that suffered a wound in the past. The restriction of oxygen to that area causes pain. That distracts the person from their emotional challenges. It doesn’t actually help the whole situation because now the person has a pain they didn’t have before; but he/she is distracted now, and isn’t suffering as much from the emotional reaction to whatever life situation caused it because their focus is on the physical pain. But it seems that when the emotional trauma is removed, the pain fades away and that’s what Sarno’s book is all about.

Anyone who comes up with a new idea is made fun of; people hang onto their programming, whether it’s a conventional Western medical education or a certain political or religious outlook. It’s easier to hang onto that than do some research on your own. That’s why it takes over 20 years for a new idea that has been proven and peer-researched, to make it into college textbooks. Most professors want to hang onto what they were taught; it’s comfortable. NURTURE

Love of the

B

outdoors Written By Allison Prater

efore I became a mother, people would talk about the toddler years with an air of dread. Our culture tends to tell a story along the lines of, “one day your sweet happy baby will wake up transformed into an unruly, unreasonable, volatile, wild beast.” People love to tell you something to this effect right after your baby is born too, “Oh he may be sweet now, but just you wait until the toddler years.”

As we approach our son’s 2nd birthday, I must say I don’t think we talk enough about how amazing toddlers are. Watching my child transform every day is more exhilarating than I can possibly say. Every day he picks up new words, learns to sing songs, invents dance moves, becomes more coordinated, learns to dress himself, is able to more clearly communicate his needs to me; it’s so gratifying to see him learning. These days, I laugh exponentially more than I ever have in my life.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

February 2015

Now I’m not saying that the toddler years are all sunshine and roses, but I wonder how it’s helping parents and children to tell this story of the terrible two’s. Just like it’s not helpful to tell pregnant women horror stories about childbirth, I wonder about the effect of too much focus on negative stories. What if we said instead, “The toddler years are really amazing and fun, challenging at times, but what in life is not challenging?”

MEN! Tired all the time?

Some days are easier than others, and I am learning constantly as well as my son. A big lesson I learned recently is the importance of daily movement for both of us. We recently changed up our daily routine to include more time outdoors. As much as possible, after I’ve had my morning coffee, we get dressed and get outside. We like to cycle between walks around our neighborhood and trips to various parks and trails. My son is getting to the age where he can hike a bit, and I encourage him to walk and move around as much as possible.

Gaining weight? Low libido? Moody and Irritable?

You may be suffering from low testosterone. Bio Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy can reverse the symptoms of hormone imbalance returning men to their optimal physical, sexual, mental and emotional health of their 20’s.

I notice that if we get this time in the fresh air and sun and he gets a chance to exert a lot of energy, he takes better naps. If he naps deeply, he tends to fall asleep more easily and sleep more soundly through the night. He also tends to be in a better mood, and we have less power struggles throughout the day. Toddlers have sooooo much life force energy! If we have too many days in a row when I have a lot of work and chores to do and we don’t get outside, I notice my son is a lot fussier, and more of his testing behaviors come out. He’s also more likely to have more frequent meltdowns and not sleep as well. If he is able to have some space to walk, run, dig, climb, etc., he is able to use this abundance of energy in appropriate ways. On days when we get a good park session in, he is usually more content to play by himself and focus on books or fine motor activities.

Call Dr. William Clearfield today to see if testosterone therapy is right for you!

William N. Clearfield D.O.

These morning walks have also been really great for me. My energy level throughout the day is more constant, and I am more focused in my daily responsibilities. I am able to get a little time to think and reflect, which helps me be more patient if some of his more challenging behaviors emerge. We also enjoy recounting our walks at the end of the day, recalling the birds and animals we saw, treasures we discovered, and friends we made. I find that talking to him about our adventures at the end of the day helps calm him down as he’s falling asleep. I know this isn’t exactly groundbreaking news, but I do feel this small part of our daily routine is immensely beneficial to our family, so I thought I’d share.

Emerald

The Stone of Successful Love Written By Allison Prater

E

merald is one of four “precious” gemstones, which include Diamond, Ruby and Sapphire. A green variety of Beryl, it is a beryllium aluminum silicate mineral colored by trace amounts of chromium and/or vanadium. Emerald occurs in hues ranging from yellow-green to blue-green, with the finest being a pure verdant green hue, medium to dark in tone. Emerald is a receptive stone associated with the planet Venus, the earth element and honors deities Venus, Isis, Ceres and Vishnu. Emerald has been a source of fascination and reverence in many cultures for over six thousand years. It is said to have been sold in the markets of Babylon as early as 4,000 B.C. The Inca worshiped the stone, and it was highly honored many faiths for its spiritual power and beauty. Revered in Ancient Egypt, and considered a gift of Thoth, the god of wisdom, it was a favorite jewel of Queen Cleopatra. The Emerald mines in Upper Egypt, rediscovered a hundred years ago, are some of the oldest in the world and were called Cleopatra’s mines for her love of the stone.

eloquent speech. It is said to aid in success in business matters, and is particularly known for assistance in areas of legal affairs. Emerald is reputed to possess the power to assist one in becoming an eloquent speaker. Aristotle, a great fan of the gem, wrote that owning an Emerald increases the owner’s importance in presence and speech during business, gives victory in trials, and helps settle litigation. Emerald is the stone that most represents the energy patterns of an activated Heart Chakra. Located near the center of the breastbone this chakra regulates our interaction with the external world and controls what we embrace or resist. When the Heart Chakra is out of balance, one may feel either controlling or controlled in a relationship, and become overly critical of others. Inappropriately strong emotional responses to everyday external stimuli can be a sign of an imbalance in this chakra. Green crystal energy, such as Emerald, is used to resolve such blockages and to re-balance the Heart Chakra. A strong and open heart also allows universal blessings to flow into one’s life. Emerald is a powerfully grounding stone in meditation, it helps the meditator to maintain focus on the slow, rhythmic breathing necessary to attaining depth in a meditative state. Once achieved, it assists in maintaining the cool brilliance of deliberate reflection.

INGREDIENTWATCH

Champagne Sparkling wines are produced worldwide, and many producers use special terms to define them: Spain uses Cava, Italy designates it Spumante, and South Africa uses Cap Classique. Asti is an Italian sparkling wine made from the Muscat grape, while the Glerá grape is used for Prosecco. In Germany, Sekt is a common sparkling wine. Other French wine regions cannot use the name Champagne, for example Burgundy and Alsace produce sparkling wines known as Crémant.

Written By Lissie Lyles

Méthode Champenoise is the traditional method by which Champagne is produced. After primary fermentation and bottling, a second alcoholic fermentation occurs in the bottle. This second fermentation is induced by adding several grams of yeast (usually Saccharomyces cerevisiae, although each brand has its own secret recipe) and several grams of rock sugar. A minimum of 1.5 years is required to completely develop all the flavor. After aging, the bottle is manipulated, either manually or mechanically, in a process called remuage, so that the lees settle in the neck of the bottle. After chilling the bottles, the neck is frozen, and the cap removed. The pressure in the bottle forces out the ice containing the lees, and the bottle is quickly corked to maintain the carbon dioxide in solution. Some syrup (le dosage) is added to maintain the level within the bottle and, adjust the sweetness of the finished wine.

C

hampagne evokes images of glamour, romance and luxury. Most legal structures reserve the word Champagne exclusively for sparkling wines from the Champagne region of France, made in accordance with Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne regulations. Most recently, Canada, Australia, Chile, Brazil and China passed laws or signed agreements with Europe that limit the use of the term “Champagne” to only those products produced in the Champagne region. The United States bans the use from all new U.S. produced wines. Only those that had approval to use the term on labels before 2006 may continue to do so, and only when the wine’s actual origin (i.e. “California”) is listed on the label. The majority of U.S. produced sparkling wines do not use the term Champagne on their labels, and some states, such as Oregon, ban producers in their states from using the term.

As a general rule, only certain grapes are permitted to be used, most often the white Chardonnay, or the dark-skinned “red wine grapes” Pinot noir, or Pinot Meunier. Due to the gentle pressing of the grapes and absence of skin contact during fermentation, these dark skinned grapes usually yield a white base wine. Most Champagnes, including Rosé wines, are made from a blend of all three grapes, although Blanc de

Blanc (“white from white”) Champagnes are made from 100 percent Chardonnay and Blanc de Noir (“white from black”) Champagnes are made solely from Pinot noir, Pinot Meunier or a mix of the two. Four other grape varieties are permitted, mostly for historical reasons, as they are rare in current usage. The 2010 version of the appellation regulations lists seven varieties as allowed, Arbane, Chardonnay, Petit Meslier, Pinot blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Meunier and Pinot noir.

The most common style today is Brut, although throughout the 19th century and into the early 20th century Champagne was generally much sweeter than it is today, Most of the Champagne produced today is “Non-vintage”, meaning it is a blended product of grapes from multiple vintages. Most of the base will be from a single year vintage with producers blending anywhere from 10 to 15 percent (even as high as 40 percent) of wine from older vintages. A cuvée de prestige is a proprietary blended wine, usually a Champagne that is considered to be the top of a producer’s range. Famous examples include Louis Roederer’s Cristal, Laurent-Perrier’s Grand Siècle, Moët & Chandon’s Dom Pérignon, Duval-Leroy’s Cuvée Femme and Pol Roger’s Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill.

Pinot noir and Pinot Meunier give the wine its length and backbone. They are predominantly grown in two areas--the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne. These regions are notable for north-facing chalky slopes that derive heat from the warm winds rising from the valleys below. Chardonnay gives the wine its acidity and biscuit-like flavor. Most Chardonnay is grown in a north–south-running strip to the south of Épernay, called the Côte des Blanc. This includes the villages of Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The differences in climate around the vineyards accounts for the differences in grape characteristics. Blending juice from different grape varieties sourced from multiple geographical areas within Champagne, helps to get the desired style for each Champagne house.

Champagne is rich in trace minerals such as magnesium, potassium, zinc and lithium. A 2007 joint study by the University of Reading and University of Cagliari noted that the high amount of the antioxidant polyphenols in sparkling wine can help prevent deterioration of brain cells due to oxidative stress. While the co-authors of the study maintain that it’s too early to conclusively say that drinking champagne is beneficial for brain health, their preliminary findings are encouraging.

The ripeness of the grapes and the amount of sugar added after the second fermentation—dosage--varies and will affect the amount of sugar remaining in the Champagne when bottled for sale, and hence the sweetness of the finished wine. Wines labeled Brut Zero, more common among smaller producers, have no added sugar and will usually be very dry, with less than three grams of residual sugar per liter in the finished wine. The following terms are used to describe the sweetness of the bottled wine:

Pouring sparkling wine while tilting the glass at an angle and gently sliding in the liquid along the side will preserve the most bubbles, as opposed to pouring directly down. Colder bottle temperatures also result in reduced loss of bubbles. Additionally, the industry is developing Champagne glasses designed specifically to reduce the amount of bubbles lost.

otherwort, or Leonurus cardiac, is an herbaceous perennial plant and member of the mint family. Some common names of this herb include Throw-wort, Lion’s Ear and Lion’s Tail. Originally from Central Asia and southeastern Europe, it is now found the world over, as its popularity for use as an herbal remedy spread. Motherwort thrives on roadsides, fields, even in disturbed areas like dumps and vacant lots. The plant prefers well-drained soil and partial shade, and thrives in climate zones four through eight. Motherwort has a square, hairy stem and flowers of a light pink/violet hue appear at the top part of the plant. It can grow to a little over three feet in height. The leaves are the part of the plant used in medicinal preparations.

Motherwort contains the alkaloid leonurine, a mild vasodilator that has a relaxing effect on smooth muscles. For this reason, it has also been used as a cardiac tonic, and to ease flatulence, menstrual cramping and insomnia. Susan Weed cautions there is a risk of this herb becoming habit forming, if taken in

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

As always, consult a care provider you trust before working with this, or any herbal remedy. Motherwort is an attractive plant that thrives in our high desert climate. Bees enjoy its beautiful flowers, and it requires very little pampering.

Motherwort enjoyed a long history of use in traditional medicine in Central Europe, Asia and North America. Some believe the name Motherwort comes from its popularity among midwives who used it for a variety of purposes including uterine tonic and for the prevention of uterine infection. There is some disagreement among herbalists as to whether Motherwort should be given to pregnant women. Susan Weed recommends it for promoting relaxation, easing pains during and after labor, and preventing hemorrhage. Michael Tierra disagrees with her and believes the herb should be contraindicated for pregnant women, since the herb can cause bleeding when taken in larger doses and could therefore induce miscarriage. In China, it was historically used to prevent pregnancy and regulate menstruation.
