Let’s Talk About Sex Written By Dr. Tory Clark

W

e simply cannot assume that our partner(s) will accurately disclose their risk for a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI). A recent study found that 69 percent of participants with human papillomavirus (HPV), 38 percent with genital herpes and 12-33 percent with HIV, failed to reveal their condition to their new partner(s). On a first date, this is probably not the topic of conversation that is high on the list of things to talk about; however, it is one that needs to be discussed at some point. When was the last time you spoke to your partner(s) about STI‘s? Was it before or after you had engaged in sexual activity? If your answer to that was, “I didn’t or haven’t”, maybe it is time to start thinking about having that conversation. It is very difficult to broach this topic with a potential partner. We already live in a society where talking about sex in general is still taboo; however, if you don’t feel comfortable having this conversation, should you be having sex yet? Additionally, if your partner does not want to discuss this subject, you may want to reconsider beginning a sexual relationship with them. When people are uneasy about a topic, often the best place to start is to talk about talking--discuss why it is so hard to talk about sex. We each have our own reasons, and understanding each other’s reasons sets the stage for a solid foundation in a relationship. Use this discussion to segue into sharing each others’ sex histories. Self-disclosure is powerful; research indicates that when one partner openly discusses his or her own feelings, the other partner is likely to do the same. Talk about your past and present sexual behaviors and why you think that this is important information to exchange. Keep in mind that even if both partners have disclosed everything to one another, there is no way to ensure that their previous sexual partners were honest with them! This is why it is crucial for both partners to be tested before engaging in any sexual activity that puts them at risk for STIs. Don’t assume that you are receiving STI testing every time you have a gynecologic exam or Pap smear. If you think you need STI testing, request it from your doctor or local Planned Parenthood. They can provide accurate information regarding your concerns and what tests you would need.

By taking these steps, it not only reduces one’s chance of contracting an STI, but also greatly contributes to a sense of mutual trust within a budding relationship. here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

Feng Shui Facts & Fiction Written By Rebecca Moore

ccording to New Age Feng Shui, there is an eight sector chart used for every house based on the front door location. Is this logical, considering not only are houses different, but also people? Many Traditional Feng Shui methods are individual to people, the house and the situation. For example, based on year of birth, a person has three auspicious sectors used to enhance health, relationships and money. Chinese astrology not only considers our animal sign, but also our Four Pillars. A Four Pillars chart can tell us why we act, think and react the way we do. The chart also describes how the seasons influence us and when we can benefit from them. Someone in a bad luck cycle might be over-reactive, make unhealthy decisions, loose a job or get divorced. Annual energies can also affect us and the sectors HB The energies will begin shifting of our homes. at the end of January--what influence will they have on you this year? While breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women, among Hispanic women it is the most common cause of death from cancer, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). With Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Northern Nevada funding, the Healthy Breast Fund was established at PPMM to provide self breast exams and information at a discounted rate. Those women who PPMM medical personnel determined needed mammograms or more extensive diagnostic services were referred to a local diagnostic center for followup. PPMM staff noted that less than 50% of the referrals actually followed through with the referrals. See ad page 45. How To Get Rid of Unwanted Direct Mail at Home and at The Office

I

s your mailbox cluttered with junk mail? Have you ever asked yourself how some of these companies even got your mailing address to begin with? Every time you provide your name and address when buying a product you’re signing up to receive direct mail pieces. This occurs when you buy a car or a house, use a shopping card, sign up for a credit card, subscribe to a magazine, buy something from a catalog, give money to a charity, or fill out a product registration form. Once signed up, your name is put into a database for that company. Often companies will rent out their database lists to other businesses for direct marketing. There is a way to cut back the amount of direct mail you receive. By contacting the Direct Marketing Association you can register to have your name removed via the Mail Preference Service. This will take your name off most major catalog list rentals. You can register online or by mail. The Direct Marketing Association also allows you to pick and choose what direct mail pieces you receive. Sometimes it’s nice to not have to go the store to see what is on sale. This year, go green by eliminating excess waste. You can end the annoyance of mail pieces that go straight from your mailbox to your trash.

ook at any menu of services offered at a day spa, and you are likely to see a variety of body wraps available as part of the body treatments provided. Why are body wraps so popular, and how does someone choose what type of body wrap is best for their individual needs? Body wraps are an effective body treatment; whether one’s goal is exfoliation, inch loss or moisturizing the skin, there are body treatments available that will fulfill the desires of any client. There are two main types of wraps--wraps that work by drawing toxins out of the skin, and infusion wraps that infuse product into the skin. Both types of wraps are equally effective; it is simply a matter of choosing the wrap that best fits the goal in mind. If exfoliation and smoother skin are the goals, then the wraps that draw toxins out of the skin are the better choice. If the goal is detoxification or inch loss, then the infusion wraps are the preferred option. There are two types of infusion body wraps; herbal wraps and mineral wraps. Both herbal and mineral wraps are effective detoxifying and inch loss wraps. With most body wraps, the product is either applied to the client, with mud or clay wraps, or the client is wrapped up in an Ace-type bandage. The client then rests on a massage table, and is wrapped up and relaxes for the duration of the wrap. However, there are some wraps that encourage the client to be active while they are wrapped. While offering the client the option to lie down during the wrap, both these recommend that the client do light exercise while wrapped. With such a wide variety of body wraps available, offering endless array of ingredients, it is important to research and ask questions about which body wrap will work best for you. HB

Thyroid Issues? Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s and Auto-Immune Thyroid Written By Dr. Martin Rutherford DC

Proper thyroid management should also include identifying the six main patterns of low thyroid function (of which only one requires medication), using blood tests. By understanding the functional blood chemistry panels, clinicians can assess and support the myriad of thyroid disorders confounding his patients often by using only natural medicine and dietary changes.

A

n estimated 27 million Americans suffer from thyroid related illnesses, the majority of them women. Yet thyroid related illnesses are more often than not ill-diagnosed, and there is much about their treatment that bears greater clarification and study, especially in the frequently undiagnosed Hashimoto’s patient. The most recent science emphasizes the root cause of thyroid related illnesses as being environmental factors, particularly infectious disorders. Though this science has been in literature since the 1940’s, the full concept is only now re-emerging and being utilized successfully in modern clinical models.

When all of the clinical “dots” are connected, given proper attention and are addressed efficiently, the “thyroid” suffering patient’s life can often be changed for the better. HB

It is generally accepted that thyroid auto-antibodies, thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase (rarely assessed in standard thyroid panels) reflect disease activity and progression and are valuable in disease prediction and the classification of Hashimoto’s (if you have been diagnosed as hypothyroid there is about a 90 percent chance it is actually Hashimoto’s autoimmune response or disease) and Graves disease. While most clinicians rely on antibody levels and elevations in thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), they give little attention to the factors involved in thyroid auto-immunities and most hypothyroid conditions. Researchers and clinicians should be asking the question “Why does the human body react to its own antigens, resulting in the production of potentially harmful auto-antibodies?” This causes the body to attack itself. This event could stem from environmental factors (i.e. bacterial or viral infections), toxic chemicals binding to human tissues, and/or neurologic imbalances causing modification of the body’s immune system allowing the body to attack its own tissues. The thyroid is the most vulnerable tissue, by far, to these “autoimmune” attacks.

References: 1. Kharrazian, Datis, DHSC, DC, MS “Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? When My Lab Tests Are Normal: A Revolutionary Breakthrough In Understanding Hashimoto’s Disease and Hypothyroidism”, Morgan James Publishing, February 2010 2. Vojdani, Aristo, PHD, MSC, MT, “Antibodies As Predicators of Autoimmune Diseases and Cancers”, Expert Opinion on Medical Diagnostics, June 2008 593-605

The basics of thyroid gland and thyroid metabolic physiology must be understood to clinically assess thyroid dysfunction and management. Rarely does this occur in today’s five minute clinical doctor visit world, and with the insufficient thyroid panels that have become “standard.” Since the thyroid gland is connected to many “dots,” including gastrointestinal dysfunction, adrenal hormone metabolism, stomach acid production, brain chemistry changes, and liver detoxification, its dysfunction can contribute to clinical manifestations throughout the body. These must all be assessed. A basic understanding of the immune system function is a critical first step in managing thyroid disorders. The immune system must be addressed and supported along with the thyroid to successfully manage Hashimoto’s, prevent future autoimmune diseases and enjoy a better quality of life. Life’s a journey. HERBS&SPICES HERBSSPICES

The pleasant cherry flavor makes it an enjoyable medicine to ingest.

Written by Allison Prater

W

ild Cherry Bark is a true American Classic. It has been used for hundreds of years by First Americans to ease labor pains, in addition to stomach and lung problems. Also known as Virginia prune, black cherry and choke cherry; the reddish brown bark of the wild cherry tree, which grows throughout North America, especially in Northern and Central states, is still powerful plant medicine for the dreaded cold and flu season. Its anti-tussive, expectorant, astringent, digestive bitter, tonic, pectoral, stomachic and mild sedative properties make it an excellent alternative to some of the heavily processed, chemical laden, poisonous, over-the-counter cold and flu medicines out there. (cough. NyQuil, ahem). Many of these mystery concoctions now contain traces of wild cherry bark, as part of their new-fangled formula. Traditionally, the inner bark from the young tree is harvested and dried in the autumn, when the prussic acid content is at its highest. When ingested, prussic acid is first rapidly excreted via the lungs, increasing respiration. Then the sensory nerves, which provoke the coughing reflex, are soothed through its sedative action. It is primarily used in treating irriEliminate Refined Sugar tating and persistent • Organic • Untreated • coughs, making it Rich in Enzymes the only possible to rest well, Manitoba White Honey and heal more effecdistributor in NV.“I lost tively. combination with other herbs, to treat lung conditions such as bronchitis, whooping cough and asthma. The volatile oils are beneficial for digestion, used as a bitter to stimulate sluggish bowels. The mild-sedative properties help to relax and soothe the achy-body feeling that sometimes accompanies the flu. The pleasant cherry flavor makes it an enjoyable medicine to ingest. It is great for children, and picky adults. Planetary Herbals makes a wild cherry bark syrup that is more potent than using the herb in a tea; it is very effective for coughs. Wild cherry tea is mild and soothing for someone who is generally not feeling well. To make a tea, place one teaspoon of dried wild cherry bark in one cup of boiling water. Steep for the leaves for ten minutes and then strain them. Add some lemon and honey to taste, if desired. IMPORTANT: Always consult an herb specialist you trust with your health concerns before ingesting any herb. Be sure never to give wild cherry bark to children under age two. Do not drink more than three cups of wild cherry tea per day, or use more than the recommended dosage of a syrup or tincture. Wild cherry bark, leaves and fruit pits all contain hydrocyanic acid, which can be toxic in large amounts. HB References: 1. Lust, J. The Herb Book. Bantam, London 1990. 2. Bremness, Lesley. Herbs. I was nervous when I first walked into Dr. Kwong’s office with a broken tooth. Dr. Kwong was new in his own dental office and I didn’t have a dentist to call my own. I was immediately put at ease by the friendly staff. I was very pleased with the professional manner in which Dr. Kwong took care of my dental problem. He was gentle and explained each step of the procedure. This was appreciated, as I am one of those patients who take nothing to ease the pain. So you’re pregnant! Massage and Structural Alignment for Pregnancy and After Written By Kim McIntire, Certified Rolf® Practitioner & LMT

F

or most, pregnancy is a welcome blessing filled with excitement and hope. Pregnancy also brings about physical, emotional and physiological changes. You may notice that your moods change at the drop of a hat; you have new aches and pains that have never been there before. Of course your clothes do not seem to fit which, although natural, may be alarming to some. Prenatal massage and structural alignment can help ease the fears, calm the mind, relax the body, and free you of those new aches and pains brought on by your changing body. The purpose of prenatal massage is to help keep balance in the ever changing body and mind of a pregnant woman. When balance of the physical body is maintained, it encourages steady blood pressure, pulse and blood flow to the uterus, placenta and fetus. The mental balance also helps decrease the response of stress from work and worry about the future. The skin is the largest organ of the body, taking up six to eight percent of the total body weight. Just a quarter-sized area of the skin contains over three million cells, including nerves and blood supply. Research shows the benefits of skin stimulation helps the mother and also influences the health and well-being of the child, while in utero and after birth. A study of rats that were handled in a gentle manner opened their eyes sooner after birth, developed coordination faster and had stronger immune systems. The stroked animals were also calmer and better problem solvers. The non-handled animals were more timid, excitable and fearful. Structurally, a pregnant body is also changing to accom-

modate for the growing fetus inside. Organs are pushed around to make space for the growing fetus, the abdomen and breasts enlarge, which puts strain upon ligaments of the uterus and the spine. A woman’s gait also changes because of a shifted pelvis. To compensate, the body’s natural response is for the rib cage to move backwards and the head moves forward. Maintaining structural stability of this changing body is very important in order to help maintain a pain free body and a happier, healthier mom-to-be. The way a pregnant woman drives her car, sits in a chair, or even exercises can make a huge impact upon her structural balance. Sitting in an office chair all day with her legs crossed may lead to sciatic pain in the hip and down the leg. This pain will cause discomfort and unneeded restless, sleepless nights. Education is key in helping a pregnant woman understand how to prevent unneeded pain in her body. Pregnancy does not have to be a painful journey. romatherapy stimulates and restores the mind with aromatic oils extracted from the life force of plants. They relieve anxiety, lessen fatigue and encourage relaxation by being absorbed through the skin and carried by the circulatory system throughout the body. In warm water, these natural oils from flowers and plants help the skin release toxins, absorb

nutrients and retain moisture while the hot spring water increases circulation and causes detoxification. It is the chemistry of an essential oil that determines its therapeutic properties. Two examples of the molecules are esters and alcohols. Esters are anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and have an immediate reaction on the central nervous system, both calming and uplifting. Lavender, Clary sage and Bergamot are among this chemical group used for eliminating restlessness and anxiety. Alcohols, found in Tea Tree, Peppermint and Eucalyptus are vitalizing, detoxifying and have strong anti-infectious, anti fungal and antiviral properties. Their pharmacological activity has been studied extensively and is confirmed by clinical aromatherapists. Oils such as Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and Rosemary might also strengthen your immune system. When inhaled, essential oil fragrances such as Eucalyptus and rosemary are absorbed through blood circulation and nerve pathways from the sinuses into the central glands of the brain, which control emotional, neurological and immunological functions. When added to steam, essences become specific medicines for respiratory conditions and headaches. For example, mucolytic essences of Eucalyptus or Rosemary aid in alleviating stubborn congestion. They are perfect for relieving a stuffy head or just the tension of the day. They are also successful in clearing old energy and toxins. Breathing deeper is easier and non-useful mental activity is slower. Essence and Eucalyptus and Rosemary are also effective in relieving body pain. When used as a massage or moisturizing oil, minute quantities are absorbed through the skin. This reduces muscle tension and pain, and enhances circulation, ridding the body of infection and improving skin conditions. Silky soft oil rubbed over the body by nurturing hands or with hot stones helps you remain calm, toned and balanced. By using these essential oils in this manner your body and mind will be grateful! already achieved, all the things you’ve done that were good or productive. Most important, keep your thoughts positive by pivoting your mind to something that makes you feel happy. For you are a magnet, attracting with your thoughts and feelings. You are infinitely powerful in your ability to create what you want in your life. The only thing stopping you is dysfunctional thoughts, beliefs and expectations.

Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

he word thrive is defined as follows: to prosper, to be fortunate or successful, to increase in property, health or wealth, and to flourish. If there was ever a time to focus on the positive, it’s now. January is that time of new beginnings; a time when we traditionally take stock and decide to do something about what isn’t working in our lives.

You are a genius mind-body machine with over fifty trillion working parts. Each of those fifty trillion cells, chemically or electrically are functioning at over a hundred thousand times per second. You have free will to think what you want. Each thought has its own vibrational frequency, like a radio signal, impacting each cell for good or ill. Each thought also goes out and impacts others as well as affects the invisible energy surrounding you. Over 85 percent of communication is non-verbal. Your thoughts, beliefs and expectations are affecting everyone around you. They may be invisible but they‘re powerful.

The political, economic and cultural influences around us right now seem to have created a perfect storm of confusion and frustration. However, that’s the default way of looking at things, which is not productive. Whether our challenges are financial or personal, in order to rise above them we must focus on what is going right in our lives, and take action regarding what’s not. Is it time to get out of a dysfunctional relationship or focus on finding a way to improve it? Is it time to quit a destructive habit? All behavior is purposive. We are engaging in certain behaviors in order to feel good, or to feel “better.” However, when a habitual behavior causes us to feel bad, that’s the time to let go of it.

THRIVING, Not Just Surviving...

Now is the best time to take stock. Sit down on Sunday, January 1st and list all the things you’re grateful for, the things that are working in your life. Then list the things you’d like to change, whether they’re financial or personal and then write down why you’re not taking action to change them. There is no need to stay stuck in the same place for another year. If we stay in the same old rut, living out the same behaviors, we’re living in default, like a computer program that “defaults” to what it was programmed to do.

It’s time to realize that you may have been conditioned (or you may have programmed yourself) for a way of living, through your thoughts, beliefs and expectations. There are ways to change your conditioning. You don’t have to continue with dysfunctional programming, like a simple machine, any longer. Now look at the things you’ve written down, the reasons for not taking action. Look at each reason critically, and then decide whether you were conditioned to stay in your rut by the culture, by family or by fear of change. Maybe it’s a comfort zone. Sometimes we get comfortable being miserable. Fear is almost always the reason behind the reason. Fear of disapproval, fear of not being able to make it on our own, fear of making the wrong decision, etc. So we stay in our rut, with fear making our decisions for us.

Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD “Were it not a fact of experience that supreme values reside in the soul, psychology would not interest me in the least, for the soul would then be nothing but a miserable vapor.” Carl Jung

ctober’s article, “The Soul House,” discussed how you live in two houses. One is a physical structure with a street address that locates it in the material world. The other is the dwelling of your innermost self--your spirit, or soul. You leave the former house when you die, but the latter is the essence of your being and all that you take with you--all that you really are--on the other side. Your soul affects the structure of your world and life more than you probably realize. This is because everything you do and think, all of your attitudes, interact with those of your core self, or soul. Your conscious path and approach to life can be in accordance with the values of your soul or in opposition to them. When in accordance, you tend to feel more alive, creative and whole. When in opposition, you tend to feel depressed or anxious, and to experience more conflict in life. This is why the word “psychology” was put together the way it is. Psyche is the Greek word for soul, and so psychology was originally the study of the soul and how a person’s relationship to the soul affects their life. The field of psychology developed during a time when people still believed in the soul. Psychiatrists such as Carl Jung realized that how you relate to

your soul has far-reaching effects on your mental, emotional, spiritual, and even physical health. Some psychotherapies continue to recognize the central role of the soul in psychological health. They assist individuals in discovering and living in accordance with the values of their deepest self. Other psychotherapies tend to focus on methods for living life in accordance with the values of the ego. Perhaps this outgrowth of psychology might be more aptly called “ego-ology” since it seems to be the science of how to give the ego what it wants. Just as we can speak of living in two different “houses” simultaneously, we can also speak of living in two different time structures. The outer world passes steadily second by second, hour by hour, year by year. “Time marches on,” and your earthly existence marches with it. But the maturation of the soul is not so steady and predictable. Whereas physical life proceeds without interruption, the pendulum of the soul swings only when something meaningful touches it. It is conceivable that the soul may not mature at all if nothing of real depth--such as authentic love, joy, laughter, or suffering--impacts and deepens it. It is the life lived with depth--not just life itself--that evolves and deepens the soul. So what does it mean to live life with depth? In part, it means living from your individuality, or true self. You come into the world with a unique temperament and set of talents and potentials. You also have a unique destiny--a contribution to the world that only you can make. Your destiny is your opus (life’s work), which you may accept or reject. To accept it is to strive to become the most fully developed (actualized) individual you were created to be.

true self may be papered over and buried beneath a variety of compromises and self-deceptions. In addition, you may also resist the development and expression of your true self because you have grown comfortable with your lesser self. This attachment to your lesser, or false, self can keep you from living your destiny. It is against this backdrop that the evolution of your soul takes place. In the process of becoming an individual--as opposed to a clone--awareness of your true self is developed and the soul is deepened. A life of depth involves the sacrifice of your ego on the cross of your destiny. And this sacrifice will occur many times, in ways large and small, across your lifetime. These “deaths” will gradually deepen you, mature you, build compassion, and lead to wisdom, understanding, and love. There will be times when living your destiny will feel like climbing a tall, steep mountain. To follow your unique path can be painful and require a great deal of work and sacrifice. On other occasions the path of your destiny may feel effortless. It is, after all, the calling of your truest, deepest nature. Nothing can compare with living your own life by developing and expressing your deepest loves, gifts and potential. It is this life that is most truly heroic and courageous. It is also of the greatest value, for it is the vein of gold that only you can mine. HB References:

All About Detoxification and Elimination

per pound of body weight on a daily basis. Finish drink ing liquids at least three hours before retiring in order to avoid frequent nightly visits to the bathroom. Liver: The “recycling-center.” This organ separates the bad chemicals from the good ones, and directs the toxins to the appropriate organ for exiting the body. If the primary organ of elimination is clogged, the liver attempts to redirect the toxins. Wheatgrass implants provide a direct “shot in the arm” to the liver and help pull toxins out of the blood more quickly. Written By Carol Christian

Lungs: The bloods “air purifiers.” The lungs introduce oxygen directly into the bloodstream while, at the same time, removing waste gases that are produced in every cell of our body during the Krebs (energy producing) cycle. Deep breathing from the diaphragm is crucial. It is also important to have oxygen available for breathing, which is often more easily said than done, especially in cities. Regular aerobic exercise in an oxygen rich, clean, pollution-free environment is a solution. If you are a conditioned shallow breather, simple means are available to loosen your breathing.

S

ometimes people ask, “I’m eating all of this healthy food, but I feel lousy! I don’t understand it.” Well, our body is like our home. If it hasn’t been cleaned for a while, it will accumulate filth. Your home, like your body, may appear to be clean on the outside, but the interior is what ultimately will keep you healthy. The most successful self-rejuvenation programs begin with internal housecleaning. Colon cleansing allows the body to naturally release toxic wastes that have been accumulating in the body for years.

Lymph: The major “garbage arteries” of the body. This intricate network of tubing carries the bulk of the waste from the cells of the body to the final elimination organs. Major lymphatic glands (“holding tanks”) are the appendix, spleen, thymus and tonsils. These glands tend to swell during detoxification.

Included is a list of major organs and elimination processes and detoxification tonics:

The Major Organs of Elimination

Regular exercise (both aerobic and resistance) and massage are beneficial to the lymphatic system. Drink plenty of fluids to help dilute, transport and eliminate toxins.

Every cell of the body has a function that facilitates the removal of waste, yet there are organs that specialize in “wastemanagement.” The following list consists of these major organs and of ways in which you can assist them during the initial detoxification period:

Skin: The “temperature/humidity controller.” The skin is the elimination organ with the largest surface area. In addition to regulating temperature and body moisture content, the skin often functions as a support system for the other organs of elimination. Skin disorders are manifestations of its performance of this function.

Colon: The “solid-waste management-organ” of the body. Sever al pounds of mucous and rubber-like waste can be impacted along the wall of this organ! Colon-hydrothera pies that use wheat grass-juice implants (or the juice of other fresh dark greens) are very effective in minimiz ing cleansing reactions. Secondary support can be sup plied of LIFEGIVE Internal Cleanser powder or capsules.

Exercise, dry skin brushing, massage and plenty of fluids facilitate the breathing and perspiration of the skin.

Kidneys: The “water-management” organs. The kidneys are re sponsible for keeping the chemistry of the blood alkaline by filtering dissolved acid wastes out of the body.

General Detoxification Tonics

Help your kidneys by drinking plenty of distilled water and fresh alkaline juices. Consume a minimum of ½ oz., Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

22

The following will facilitate your detoxification process significantly: • Drink lemon-water (juice 1 lemon in 8 ounces of water) December 2010

with a maximum of ½ teaspoon of cayenne upon waking to open the circulatory system and alkalize bodily fluids, this increasing the rate of detoxification. •

Fast one day per week, every week, while consuming freshly squeezed green drinks and vegetable juices, distilled water and herbal teas. These fasting days will facilitate the elimination of long term toxins from your body before they cause any serious damage. This process is analogous to changing your motor oil before your engine fails due to the wear-and-tear cause by dirt in the oil. Exercise daily (aerobic, resistance and stretching). Exercise and elimination have more in common than merely the fact that they begin with the letter “e.” Walking, dancing, swimming, rebounding and cycling are easy, pleasant and beneficial. Dry skin-brush for three to five minutes before every shower or bath to help remove dead skin and stimulate the lymphatic system.

Once you understand that temporary discomfort is the body’s only way to eliminate the accumulation of excess toxins, you will begin to appreciate and cheer your body’s efforts during the days when you do not feel good. If you learn to support your body during these times of detoxification and elimination, you will eventually feel--and be--healthier and wiser. HB

Magnesium, especially in the salt form, magnesium oxide, citrate and sulfate are also laxative and move water into the large intestines to promote more bowel activity which is particularly welcome in the high, dry, Nevada desert. Chelated magnesium is bound to an amino acid and is better absorbed in the small intestine and is more sedative. Magnesium aspartate and glycinate are representatives of this group. Many people find that the basic cal-mag is the only sleep helper they need. Herbs Countless herbs are available for sleep and calming and have been around for centuries. Beginning with Chamomile tea and tinctures and moving into combinations of herbs such as Mugwort, Valerian root, Vervain, St. John’s Wort, White Nettle

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Melatonin is probably the most well known neurotransmitter for sleep. It is made in the pineal gland (pine cone shaped) in the middle of the brain. It is secreted at night and turns down all of the signaling hormones in the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. It has a very broad therapeutic dosage range from .25 mg to 25 mg and everyone responds a little differently to it. At 3 mg before bed some people find it very difficult to get out of bed the next morning and others can take 25 mg and find it has virtually no effect in helping their sleep. Melatonin is made from serotonin, the neurotransmitter famous for treating depression, it is also calming. Serotonin is made from tryptophan, the amino acid and has been used for decades to help sleep and mood. Tryptophan competes for transport into the brain with other amino acids however the in between step in making serotonin is called 5-HTP, 5 hydroxytryptophan, which is very easily transported into the brain and rapidly restores depleted serotonin. 5 HTP, from 100mg to 300 mg before bed frequently improves sleep quality and mood.

Homeopathics The Homeopathic Repertory by Robin Murphy, ND devotes an entire chapter to sleep disturbances. Of course, they are all based on the individual’s personality and nature of the disturbance. Some of the most famous include, Coffea cruda, Pulsatilla, Stramonium, Nux vomica, Gelsemium, Avena sativa, Lachesis, Sulphur, Hyoscyamus, Belladonna, Argentum nitricum, Arsenicum, Medorrhinum, Rhus tox and Mercurius. Go online and look up your homeopathic type in regards these remedies, which are also beneficial for sleep. Drugs Although many patent drugs are very harmful, especially for long term use for sleep, some people do very well on diphenhydramine, good old Benadryl. Just don’t take it in combination with acetaminophen, which can cause liver and kidney damage. References: 1. Murphy, ND, Robin. Homeopathic Medical Repertory- Second Edition. Taurine, actually a fatty acid is calming and improves the utilization of magnesium. Phosphatidylserine helps to stabilize cortisol (cortisone) so it doesn’t spike in the night to turn on emergency blood sugar balancing. L-theanine is another calming amino acid which aid sleep and is great for behavioral control in ADD kids. GABA, gamma aminobutryic acid works great like patent drug tranquilizers without side effects. Beta, phenyl GABA has been used in Russia for decades and is very well liked by patients.

It can be slow and gentle or more aggressive but regardless you deserve it and so do your liver, colon and kidneys. The benefits include weight loss, mental clarity, deep healing and restoration of energy. You may wish to move gradually into your cleanse. Adapt as you can to the suggestions below. Anything you do is a step in the right direction, so customize the process to you.

leansing is necessary and natural in ultimate health. When our bodies are operating in balance we are constantly cleansing and letting go of toxins that accumulate. Our detox organs, such as the liver, colon, sinuses and kidney work for us, eliminating environmental, emotional and food stress through their filtering and releasing mechanisms. Even a runny nose is a form of healing or tears signify releasing emotions. When we sauna or work off a sweat, we are cleansing. The body is wise and functioning on our behalf at all times, but it can get over-burdened and back logged if we do not support the process.

You can make appropriate food choices based on your needs. Whole foods like organic vegetables are great and can be prepared into lovely dishes and delights. Sprouts, soaked seeds and nuts, blender drinks, juices, salads, fruit (only if you’re your blood sugar is in good balance) seaweed, cultured veggies and pureed veggie soups are all yummy, especially when enhanced with herbs from the Amazon. Avoid coffee, stimulants, meat, alcohol, refined foods, sugars, and canned/ processed foods. If you are working and need energy, eat - just eat light and think whole simple organic foods.

It is when our systems are on overload that a more intentional cleanse is essential to regain strength and give organs a chance to recover and renew so that they can run more efficiently day to day. Detoxifying and promoting optimal organ function can prevent degeneration. For example research shows that over 65 different health challenges facing us today are caused by a toxic colon. Is your body calling out for a yearly cleanse? The Amazon answers! The Rainforest, home to a rich and diverse species of plant life offers an incredible array of botanicals just now gaining popularity because of their effectiveness in promoting health through cleansing, nourishing and balancing in harmony with the body systems. Up to 40% of pharmaceuticals are based on the chemical constituents of plants from the rainforest. Growing in virgin soil, wild Amazonian plants, trees and fruits contain some of the highest concentrations of life force energy and trace minerals on this planet.

Many people include enemas or colonics during a cleansing program. Walking, yoga, meditation, rest, massage, acupuncture, journaling and artistic expression also augment any health program. Sleep as much as you need. Do not push yourself. Be gentle. Detoxing can make your tired or “headachy” at first. This is a true healing process as you let go of waste. You can read more on “healing crisis” in various health books. If you are not in a position to make major changes in your diet there are benefits that can be gained on a gentler program. Tonifying, cleansing herbs from the Amazon can be taken daily to help with this process. Herbs from the Amazon such as Jatoba, Una de Gato (Cat’s Claw), Tahari (Pau d’Arco), Chanca Peidra (Quebra Pedra), Chuchuhuasi, and Stevia, have been shown to protect, cleanse and flush out toxins, improve digestion, support for proper kidney and liver function while aiding in the decalcification of the body.*

By Joy Clarissa Taylor, health educator

It is no surprise that more discerning health advocates are turning to the Rainforest with questions and the Amazon is responding with solutions and results. A leading pioneer in the health discoveries of the Rainforest is John Easterling. His secret to health? Cleanse first! Then nourish and balance. John states, “(Rainforest herbs) are a gift of life energy from the Rainforest. I believe that special blends of Rainforest herbs can help restore the vibrancy of your health and your ability to enjoy the life experience.”

When food is not properly chewed and broken down in the stomach by digestive enzymes, large particles of food travel in the intestines and become food for unfriendly bacteria. These bacteria produce waste that can be absorbed into the blood and burden the body. Poor digestion has been associated with sleeplessness, poor skin, fatigue and poor quality of life.

January is an optimal renewal time to give yourself an extra boost towards letting go of stagnate toxins, emotions, habits and thoughts that do not serve you. Resolve with brave commitment to a cleansing program that suits your lifestyle. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

t is as important to recognize signs of dehydration in the cold weather months, as it is during the warmer weather. Dehydration in winter is perhaps more common than in summer; due to the fact that we are not as active, hot or sweaty, so we tend to not feel as thirsty or find water as appealing as we do in hot weather. Hydration through Colon Hydrotherapy is a safe and effective way of restoring proper fluid balance in the body. In his book “Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management,” Bernard J Jensen, D.C., Ph.D., stated that chronic dehydration causes body tissue and fluids to become thicker and more viscid, changing the consistency of the mucous lining of the colon, which fails to provide slick lubrication for the movement of feces. When the body becomes dehydrated, bowel function can slow to a halt, adversely affecting nutrient absorption and energy production. Considering the fact that we tend to overeat as well during the holidays, dehydration and reduced bowel function becomes a significant threat to the colon as well as the overall health of the body. In hot weather, sweating triggers a chain reaction in the body causing blood volume to decrease, which causes the brain to send a signal for more fluids resulting in dryness in the mouth. If we are not sweating as much in the winter, we probably are not consuming as much liquid as in the summer. Physical endurance can drop by 25 percent when the body is dehydrated by only 2 to 3 percent. Simple respiration can reduce bodily moisture content in any season; the greater the physical exertion, the more moisture respiration takes from the body (think shoveling snow). In the cold, dehydration will occur even faster as the body converts stored energy into free energy to allow the body to shiver. Regular metabolism uses up to 2 Liters of bodily fluid per day, and that number doubles in cold environments. Heaters also dry the air we breathe, which decreases our ability to take moisture in through the skin and lungs. December 2010

Colon Hydrotherapy is one of the fastest ways to get fluids back into circulation. Appearing at the emergency room to request an IV for rehydration is not practical, affordable or time efficient. A session of colon hydrotherapy can help to restore proper fluid balance in the body within an hour, as the colon can absorb about 250mL in about 20 minutes. Survivalists recommend tactical enemas, using salt and sugar packets dissolved in water, when dehydration occurs in the back country. Here in town, the same results can be obtained in a comfortable, relaxed environment by a visit to a Colon Hydrotherapist.

replacement is extremely effective and can restore energy and balance in the body, and ward off dangerous long term effects of dehydration. Since the body is 70 percent water, hydration is extremely important for proper functioning at the cellular level. Maintaining hydration will also keep you looking and feeling great! HB References:

Why does your skin age? T Written By Shanna Diaz

here are two factors that affect the aging of the skin: Intrinsic and extrinsic. Let’s talk about extrinsic or external aging. This is the natural process of biological aging compiled with exterior causes such as sun exposure, air pollution, smoking, lifestyle, cosmetics and other allergens and lack of care. It is extrinsic aging that affects the appearance of the skin. The most damaging of all of these exterior causes is sunlight. In fact, it has been said that ninety percent of the aging of your skin is due to sun damage. If this is true, think of the control one has as to how much the skin actually ages.

answer to a healthier skin, but a key consideration as to the effects of a topical antioxidant is its ability to penetrate. Important antioxidant ingredients are superoxide dismutase, plant derived antioxidants, resveratrol (wine extracts), grape seed extracts, d-alpha tocopherol, l-ascorbic and betacarotene.

We must protect the skin from the sun. The most effective antiwrinkle cream is sunblock. The best protection is a physical block that is natural, such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and iron oxides. Avoid the chemical sunscreen ingredient octyl methoxycinnamate (OCM)

Work on these and you are well on your way to having younger looking skin, and can potentially slow down the aging process all together.

Equally valuable is the use of nutrients that infuse into the tissue and support healthy cell development. Antioxidants are an

Hot Stone Massage Therapy

D

Experience New Ways to Enhance Your Customized Massage

Written By Victoria Linn

ating back as far as 5000 years ago, hot stone massage was used in India, Japan and China as part of their healing work and therapeutic purposes. The use of hot stone therapy started to become popular in the US in the 1990’s and was generally seen as a way of being pampered while enjoying a day at the spa. It has now become far more recognized as a credible alternative and a supportive adjunct therapy for specific problems such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, carpel tunnel, pain relief, anxiety and depression, improved appetite and insomnia. As an example, a single hot stone over the stomach helps relieve stomachaches and aids the digestive system. This is possible due to the increased blood flow, which helps the removal of waste products and stimulates the immune system. This modality, however, is not beneficial for everyone. Be sure to check with your physician and your massage therapist if you have any major health problems before proceeding. Hot stones placed strategically on either side of your spine; allow the heat from the stones to penetrate deeply into the muscles. In conjunction with massage therapy, the rest of your body is treated using the pre-oiled, heated stones. Basalt River rocks are the most commonly used stones for this procedure. These flat stones easily retain their heat while several different techniques are applied during the treatment. The most sought after method is deeper work, using the side of the stones to smooth out those annoying knots that cause pain and discomfort. Colder temperatures signal the beginning of “winter season.” With all of its unique beauty come unique challenges. Staying warm being a top priority, Hot Stone Massage Therapy gives you that. Generally speaking, most folks like to get a hot stone massage simply because it feels good and they are far more relaxed afterwards. In fact, once experienced, most people are hooked and tend to continue their treatments all year round, no matter the weather! In short, not only do you feel better physically, you also gain an improved sense of tranquility and general well being. So, whether you want a deep therapeutic massage, profound relaxation or to simply warm your bones, you’re sure to enjoy the experience. HB

Nicotine Kills 16 Ways

R

Written by Rebecca Gelber, MD

ecently, chemicals that tobacco companies add to cigarettes have come under intense media scrutiny. The World Health Organization just concluded an international conference on tobacco regulation, and additive use provoked heated debate. In the United States, tobacco companies can put pretty much whatever they want into their products. About eight percent of the average cigarette’s content is chemical additives, not tobacco. Still more additives infuse cigarette paper. Tobacco companies are not required to disclose what chemicals they use, what quantities they use them in or the health consequences of smoking these additives. We do know the two major additives are ammonia (used in toilet and window cleaners) and glycol (used in automobile antifreeze). These two agents comprise six percent of the weight of an average cigarette. In addition, over 600 other chemicals are used in smaller quantities. Tobacco companies add chemicals to cigarettes for a number of reasons. The first and most obvious are flavoring agents, which affect both the way cigarettes smell when a pack is opened, and the way the cigarette tastes when smoked. The most blatant flavoring is menthol, but hundreds of more subtle flavors are used as well. None of these compounds have been tested for safety when used in cigarettes. Most have been approved as food additives, but when smoked, burning frequently results in oxidization or other chemical alteration, so that the substance entering your body is quite different from the one originally added to the cigarette. The number and quantity of additives in cigarettes skyrocketed around the same time the public realized smoking is unhealthy. The first cigarette toxins identified due to their overwhelming impact on health were nicotine and tar. The government ruled that the quantity of nicotine and tar must be listed in advertisements and packaging, and consumers began to choose brands containing less of these dangerous compounds. To make their cigarettes look better, companies created blends containing less nicotine and tar, and added cellulose filters. This had unfortunate side effects for cigarette manufacturers. Products with filters and less pungent tobaccos lacked flavor, and lower nicotine levels reduced the neuropsychiatric effects of smoking. With this, cigarettes became less addictive, making it easier for smokers to

quit. Fearing loss of profits, manufacturers increased additives use to make their cigarettes taste the way smokers wanted them to taste. They added ammonia, nitrosamines and propylene glycol, so their cigarettes retained a nicotine kick--and remained as addictive as possible. The overwhelming evidence reveals that nicotine alone is incredibly unhealthy. There are no studies showing a health benefit to cigarettes that are free of additives but with higher tar and nicotine contents. In other words, it’s not the additives in your cigarettes that kill you, it’s the cigarettes in your cigarettes that will. It is common knowledge that smoking is dangerous. Many, if not most people who smoke would like to quit but haven’t yet been able to. This isn’t due to any failure of character, but rather the remarkably addictive nature of nicotine. When polled, only 29 percent of smokers knew smoking caused heart attacks; far fewer are aware of other risks. I’m always amazed by how many otherwise healthy and educated patients smoke December 2010

and are completely unaware of the impact that their habit is having on many of the health problems that are troubling them. Here are sixteen other issues to consider before you light up: 1) Cardiovascular – The primary way smoking kills. Smoking decreases oxygen delivery to heart cells and increases hypertension and atherosclerosis, adding up to a 50 percent increase in heart attacks. 2) Back Pain – Smoking constricts blood vessels, decreasing nutrient delivery and toxin removal, particularly to areas with poor circulation like the discs in your back. Smokers have a four-fold increase in sciatica and degenerative disc disease. 3) Dementia – The brain’s circulation is also reduced, starving it of nutrients and resulting in a two-fold increase in dementias, including Alzheimer’s. 4) Eyes – Macular degeneration is the primary cause of blindness in the Western world. Smokers have twice the rate of macular degeneration and three times as many cataracts. 5) Headaches – Smoking increases carbon monoxide levels, which cause headaches. This, along with vascular spasm, more than doubles a smoker’s frequency and severity of migraines. 6) Arthritis – Serial MRI’s show accelerated knee cartilage loss in smokers, along with a thirteen- fold increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis. 7) Erectile dysfunction – That’s right, smokers lose blood flow everywhere, including the penis. A recent study out of Wake Forest found a twenty-six-fold increase in impotence with smoking. 8) Hypertension – Smoking causes sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, blood vessel constriction, and atherosclerotic thickening. After a single cigarette, systolic blood pressure transiently increases up to 20mm. 9) Bones – Increases in osteoporosis and hip fractures are caused by decreased blood supply, decreased calcium and vitamin D levels, and bone resorption. Smoker’s fracture healing is delayed by two months on average. 10) Nutrient deficiency – In addition to calcium and vitamin D, smoking decreases uptake of antioxidants vitamins A, C and E, as well as energy-important B vitamins. 11) Clotting – Increased red blood cells and fibrinogen makes blood viscous and December 2010

“sticky,” promoting clotting. This kills when clots travel to the lungs, and is the primary causes of limb gangrene and amputation. 12) Gastrointestinal – Smoking weakens the muscle at the base of the esophagus, increasing acid reflux and ulcers. 13) Strokes – Between atherosclerosis, increased clotting and hypertension, smokers have two and a half-fold increase in stroke. 14) Cancer – One fifth of heavy smokers develop lung cancer. However, smoking also significantly increases rates of leukemia, breast, colon, renal, liver, pancreatic, stomach, bladder, cervical, and uterine cancer. 15) Cost- Beyond the immeasurable cost to your health, cigarettes cost up to $7/ pack, making a pack/day habit $2555/ year, adding up to over $60K in 20 years. Estimates of total out-of-pocket cost to smokers, including additional insurance premiums, health care, lost work and lower salaries calculate a total cost of over $40/pack. 16) Kids – Children whose parents smoke (even outside or with windows open) have markedly higher rates of asthma, pneumonia, sudden infant death, ear infections, ADHD and other behavioral problems, meningitis and obesity. If you do smoke, or care about someone who does, quit or help them do so. Your doctor can make the process easier and more successful with new medications including Zyban and Chantex, which decrease both cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Nicotine replacement therapy is available in multiple forms, including patches, gum, lozenges and newer e-cigarettes doubles the rate

of success, particularly when used in conjunction with prescription medications. Acupuncture or hypnotherapy are beneficial to some, and herbal supplements including St. John’s Wort, ginseng and kudzu may help others. The good news is that within 20 minutes of quitting, many injuries to your body begin healing. Quitting is hard, but nothing worthwhile is easy. Knowledge is a powerful tool, and you deserve to be aware of what you are putting in your body, and the impact it has on your health. Hopefully these facts will help you resolve to quit and will give you a few more reasons to stay quit when you do. HB References: 1. Kluger, Richard. Recently I had the opportunity to spend 2 months almost completely off the grid, in a small healing arts community. I went to town once during that time and checked my email twice before it shut down for the remainder of my stay ( I took this as a sign), and made only the most necessary of phone calls. Having some time to be removed from my normal environment made it possible for some much needed self reflection. Here are some things that I observed about myself during this time:

The Art of Unplugging

1) There are few things more delicious to me than turning off my cell phone, putting my wallet and keys away, and knowing that I did not have to carry ANY of them on a daily basis. 2) I forgot about my life online almost immediately. Two weeks in, when I finally did check in online, Facebook was not nearly as captivating as I’d remembered it. In fact, I felt antsy and signed off as quickly as possible. 3) I did not walk on asphalt or concrete at all, save the token town run. Walking on the earth feels much nicer on the joints, since it gives a little. I really noticed a change in my knees and ankles.

I

Written by Olympia Binewski

am a person who is very sensitive to over-stimulation. By this, I mean that too many sounds, too much loud sound, overwhelming smells, busy non-stop days, almost all commercials, and most pieces of technology can overwhelm the living day-lights out of me. My focus can be easily pulled by a bright shiny object in the corner of my vision. It has taken me many years to understand this about myself, and this understanding has helped immensely. As a child, the frustrated adults around me chalked this sensitivity up to ADD and other behavioral labels. I have come to feel that my sensitivity to sensory over-load is actually a very natural thing. I don’t think humans necessarily thrive when they are surrounded by the sounds of traffic, sirens, chatter, commercials and formulaic radio all at once. We were meant to breathe oxygen, not smog; meant to feel the sun on our skin, not fluorescent lighting. As I express my opinions about this, I want to make it clear that I understand that humans can’t return to some over-simplified utopia overnight, and I am not advocating an end to technology. All I am saying is that sometimes it is important to take a break and “unplug,” so to speak.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

32

4) Sunrises and sunsets are major events every day, and the people around me were paying attention. Each sunrise that I witnessed was unique. “Did you see the sunrise this morning?” was the common question instead of, “did you see this-or-that show last night?” Everyone I lived and worked with was aware of the phases of the moon, noticed falling stars, animals in the brush, and subtle changes in the weather one would normally miss in the city. There was minimal light pollution, making it possible to really see the stars. Sometimes in the city, I almost forget what spectacular scene is above us every night, because I don’t really see it. 5) With less sound around me, especially minus the city sounds of traffic and sirens, I found I was less anxious. It was much easier to focus on the task at hand. I felt self-assured, less distracted and forgetful. 6) I slept deeper, had more vivid dreams and my sleep schedule really synched up with the sun. 7) Being removed from my city identity was an interesting experience. I did not define myself by “what I do” for two months. I was free to really think about what is important in my life, and my true passions became clearer to me. The ways that I waste my time and energy in the city also became more apparent. I feel that if I’ve walked away with anything from this experience it has been a clearer sense of priorities and an increased motivation to live simply. I want to cultivate a harmonious day, every day, whether in city dwelling or country living, and every place in between. December 2010

The Rub on Muscle Balms

30%. Inactive ingredients: carbomer, edetate disodium, glyceryl sterate se, lanolin, polysorbate 80, potassium hydroxide, purified water, stearic acid, trolamine

Where to begin? This ingredient list has a host of red flags. It has multiple unrecognizable ingredients. The inactive ingredients outnumber the active ones. Methyl Salicylate, a concentrated and processed oil of wintergreen, is toxic in high doses. Note how it has the highest percentage on the active ingredient list. Overdose of Methyl Salicylate can cause severe damage to the lungs, kidneys, nervous system and skin, even death. In 2007, a 17-year-old competitive track runner in Staten Island died as a result of an accidental overdose of Methyl Salicylate, through overuse of Bengay.

appy New Year! It’s time to get into shape, right? It is time for that first big workout after the holidays, and the accompanying sore muscle aches. Are your joints aching in the cold wet weather? Feeling a chest cold? All of these are great reasons to reach for an over the counter, aromatic muscle-rub, yes? As always, when navigating ingredients for such creams, remember, not all muscle balms are created equal. Considering that everything put on the skin, is absorbed into the bloodstream, affecting all the systems of the body, it is important to read the list of ingredients on any topical product carefully. It is similar to what you put inside your body. In his book, “In Defense of Food,” Michael Pollan gives us some simple rules/guidelines that are helpful for selecting real, healthy food, instead of unhealthy, imitation food products. His suggestions include, “Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food,” and “Avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable, c) more than five in number, or that include d) high fructose corn syrup.” Following Pollan’s rationale, some basic suggestions for your skin are as follows: 1) “Don’t put anything on your skin you do not recognize as something that originally came out of the earth, or something you would eat, and/or take as a supplement,” 2) “Avoid cosmetics containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable or c) contain parabens, paraffins or any kind of petroleum by product.”

Badger Balm, Sore Muscle Rub, Badger Ingredients: *Olea Europaea (Extra Virgin Olive) Oil, *Ricinus Communis (Castor) Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax), *Capsicum Frutescens (Cayenne) Extract, Essential Oils of *Zingiber Officinale (Ginger), *Elettaria Cardamomum (Cardamom), *Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass), *Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary), Thymus Mastichina (Wild Marjoram), *Salvia Officinalis (Sage), and CO2 Extracts of *Zingiber Officinale (Ginger), & *Rosa Canina (Rosehip). * = Certified Organic

Active Ingredients: Menthol, Camphor, menthol, Cajuput Oil, Clove Bud Oil, Mint Oil, Cassia Oil

Every single ingredient can be easily traced to a natural source. The product uses olive oil and beeswax as stabilizers, which are healthy for the skin, and allow it to breathe. Cayenne exhibits natural anti-inflammatory properties and stimulates circulation, while the ginger, rosemary and lemongrass essential oils are soothing to joints and muscles. The label makes a point of translating its ingredient list, to make sure it is understandable to the consumer, which communicates respect and transparency. The majority of ingredients are certified organic. As we can see by the comparison above, not all muscle rubs are as beneficial to the body, as they may claim. Sore Muscle Balms can be effective for helping tired muscles and joints to relax, rest and recover. However, muscle rubs are not a substitute for proper care of the body, or a license for over-exertion. They are best used mindfully, and chosen with great care. HB

Inactive Ingredients: Petroleum Jelly and Paraffin

Balms are traditionally made by extracting the healing properties of herbs into oil, providing an emollient base that is combined with some sort of wax, for thickening. The active ingredients in Tiger Balm are all plant based, and quite effective for soothing muscles and easing the pain of a tired body. It is a shame that Tiger Balm chooses to use a petroleum base to stabilize their otherwise fantastic ingredient list. Petroleum-based cosmetic ingredients have been shown to increase the risks of certain types of cancer, including breast cancer. When placed on the skin, petroleum jelly does not allow the pores to breathe, making it impossible for the skin to release toxins.

Just do it with purpose.

A

Written By Bret L. Simmons, Ph.D.

re you in your organization to do something, or are you in your organization for something to do? If the answer is “to do something,” what is it that you want to do? Here is an exercise that I adapted from James Kouzes and Barry Posner’s exceptional book, “The Leadership Challenge.” This exercise should help you discover your purpose, why you do the things you do. On a piece of paper, write at the top “What I want to accomplish.” Now make a list of all the things that you want to achieve in your organization. For each item, ask yourself, “Why do I want this?” Keep asking why until you run out of reasons. By doing this exercise, you’re likely to discover those few idealized ends for which you strive. Now that you have a list of what you want to do and why you want to do it, do you see any patterns in the “whys?” Develop a statement of purpose. The statement of purpose should represent why you do the things you do. It is not about what, when, where or how you do your work, but about why. Once you understand your purpose, the what, when, where and how of your work can and will change over time, but the why will remain the same. Your purpose should be short and easy to remember, and it should serve as a guide to your daily behavior. Get to the point where you are crystal clear and consistently passionate about your purpose and watch how it changes you and those around you. My purpose is to change your mind about the value of partnering with others to build healthy, responsible organizations where everyone can thrive. Bret L. Simmons, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Management in the College of Business at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), where he teaches courses in organizational behavior, leadership and personal branding to both undergraduate and MBA students. Bret blogs about leadership, followership and social media at his website Positive Organizational Behavior.

Here are some additional questions that you can use in clarifying your purpose: • • • • • • • • • • •

How would I like to change the world for myself and my organization? How do I want to be remembered? If I could invent the future, what future would I invent for myself and my organization? What mission in life absolutely obsesses me? What’s my dream about work? What’s my most distinctive skill or talent? What’s my burning passion? What work do I find absorbing, involving, and enthralling? What will happen in ten years if I remain absorbed, involved, and enthralled in that work? What does my ideal organization look like? What’s my personal agenda? What do I want to prove?

ASTROLOGYHEALTH

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK

vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | Janurary - 2011

M

ercury stationed direct Dec. 30, after a three-week retrograde. This is followed five days later by a solar eclipse in Capricorn on Jan. 4. Together, these two events mark the end of a tense and chaotic holiday season, providing the sensation of a surge forward. I suggest, as this unfolds, that you let the cosmos provide the momentum, while you provide the vision. Rather than pushing, or attempting to manipulate the flow of events, I suggest that you strive for clarity. That would include knowing what you want, what you want to accomplish, and being clear how you feel about the people in your life. Notice the way that what you believe is possible can be distorted by believing emotional matters are dictated by pre-existing structures. When you put your authentic values and desires first, and allow your true vision for yourself to come forward, seemingly intractable ideas and structures can change before your eyes. Aries (March 20-April 19) You must know intuitively that astonishing changes are just around the bend. Yet to make the most of what is truly a once-in-a-lifetime moment, I suggest you muster up all the trust you can. It’s true that your professional life may have felt like a shambles these past few weeks, but that will soon be behind you, and I suggest you slough off any energy of frustration as soon as you can. Invest your emotional energy two places: in what is working for you, and in what turns you on the most. I recognize that nearly every message “the world” is sending runs contrary to this idea; we’re supposed to hide under the bed until the recession ends. You have another, far more exciting path forward, and by the end of this thing we’re calling 2011 you won’t recognize your life. Taurus (April 19-May 20) It is amazing how fast it’s possible to change your beliefs. I know that they can often seem petrified, and then suddenly they turn to living things. You could make a long list of the old beliefs that don’t work for you, and you could make another list of how each one represents a loyalty to someone (generally, a spouse or relative) who expects you to subscribe to that idea. The result can be a psychological maze that seems impossible to escape. Then one day you get some perspective. It’s like you fly above the maze, you see the pattern, and notice that you choose what you believe. You choose who you are loyal to and why, and you can decide not to carry around the burden of what others believe. There are days when this can seem like waging a revolution, and on other days it feels like a miracle. Have your pick. Gemini (May 20-June 21) Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius, which is your relationship zone, has potentially sent the signal that there is someone you must give up--though I would encourage you to take a more positive outlook. What seems in order in any event is creating a relationship where you actually have the freedom and space to discuss your mutual

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

needs and desires. You may have a tendency to think that relationships are all-or-nothing arrangements where power and obligation trump love and freedom. It’s likely that everyone and everything in your life is negotiable right now, no matter how dominant or powerful someone may seem at the moment. There are situations, particularly financial, where the kind of give-and-take suggested by the concept “negotiation” will be helpful. Yet in matters of the heart, remember: it’s more about give and receive. Cancer (June 21-July 22) An eclipse of the Sun in Capricorn, your relationship house, may feel like an ending; but if you open your eyes and look, you will see that it’s really an opening. The world is a different place every minute, and (even despite ourselves) people are changing, growing and evolving as the days progress; that is the definition of “alive.” While our culture advocates ideas of relationships that are prefabricated and supposedly based on tradition, your ideas of and the circumstances of those you are with are evolving, progressing and opening into new potential that you had never dreamed of before. I recognize that it can be disorienting to have no choreography or script to follow. I suggest you relax your expectations and forget what your mother told you “is the only way”--and let the adventure begin. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) The solution to a financial problem may surprise you, I suggest you have faith in what develops. For years, you’ve been fighting a kind of economic instability that overtakes your life from time to time. You’ve likely been trying to get that instability to go away; but what you can do now is make it work for you. Your charts suggest that there is some unusual potential for creating a source of income that most people would consider risky or uncertain. The difference in your situation is that this method is close to your most deeply cherished values that manifest in your relationships and your inner life. Though most people don’t care where their money comes from, you surely do--or at least, you’re learning how much this fact

matters. Focusing on that process of discovery, with a wide-open mind, will be lucrative.

create rather than on trying to solve problems. Solutions will indeed come--from your devotion to what you love.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) The thing about sex is that when the energy is right, and we’re paying attention, it draws us deep into our psyches. We may think we’re being drawn into the experience of “the other,” though I believe this is secondary to what we experience in our minds and feelings; and that would be everything. What has been coming to the surface these past few weeks has been all about you: your history, your relationship to yourself, your karma. It would be too easy to say that this is about someone else--and it would deny the rather amazing potential that your current relationships are offering to you. Said another way, as you take responsibility for your own issues, the potential of your relationships reveal itself to you. And in that process you are likely to discover the healing and the pleasure that you seek.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) There’s a fine line between asserting will and raging against yourself. Or at least the line has been thin lately, and you’ve sure been exploring it. As Mercury shifts direction the last week of the year, make sure you shift your emphasis toward being in harmony with yourself. I don’t suggest you go through a list of grievances you have with yourself; rather, resolve to let go of one phase of your life and commence another. I know these are words more often spoken and less often embraced, though with a solar eclipse in your birth sign on Jan. 4, your intentions carry more energy than usual. For this to work, you will need to reach that spot where you just let go of the frustrations of the past month, and decide in your heart you want something better. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) The solar eclipse that’s right around the corner seems designed to release you from a wad of karma that’s been bogging you down very nearly forever. Before you get there, you may feel backed into a corner, either by your circumstances or by your state of mind. This may be a prerequisite to your embracing your desire to break free and let go of whatever situations have held you hostage to the past. You may feel hesitant to act from a point of frustration, though I suggest you let it inform you of what you don’t want, and let that inspire a taste for freedom. Remember that freedom is only partially the ability to move at liberty in the world around you. This time, freedom begins from the outside and transforms into a new perspective on the world.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Your life lately has been an extended, perhaps enforced, study in getting to know yourself. I trust you’ve noticed certain ways you work against your own interests, and you have made adjustments to cooperate with yourself more actively. It’s as if you’re in a process that I could describe as settling into yourself; though there has been a layer where things seem uncertain or like the ground of your being is constantly shifting, events in the first week of the year have a feeling of slipping into your confidence. Emotional independence is one of those things that makes you an authentic adult, and many people will tell you it’s one of the most challenging things to learn. But you seem to be getting the hang of it just fine, even if some days are more challenging than others.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Pisces is often described as a laid-back sign. Yet clearly that is no longer true for you, if it ever was. The astrology of January brings the peak of a long process of personal recreation. This process goes back about a year, and has come in a series of stages, some of which have been extremely challenging. Yet these are challenges past and in most ways resolved, learned from and grown from. Open your heart to the truth that new adventures are ahead, though I can tell you that there is nothing random about this. What transpires next is based on your creative devotion to who you are becoming: you are becoming your own invention, and you are committed to shining in the world. Open up, face each day like its potential is new, and let the love in your heart shine. This you know--it’s time. HB

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) If your mind and emotions are simmering in chaos and anxiety, what does that tell you about your life? You clearly need to make some adjustments. Those come first as revelations, then as decisions. Yet one of the things you’re adjusting and deciding about is your mental approach to reality. It seems you’re figuring out that attempts at exercising control, whether over your own mind or your circumstances, do little other than burn you out. Worrying does not guarantee that you have something to worry about, though you do seem to be trying to get a grasp on why things have developed to the point where your life seems out of control. When the revelation about why that is comes, and it is indeed on its way, let the information settle in, then decide what to do about it.

THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) I’ve written many recent horoscopes focusing on the relationship between your emotional state and your ability to access your creativity. It is possible that financial concerns have influenced your mood lately more than your imagination or inspiration. I suggest you do your best to set economic concerns aside, and focus on what you are creating. It’s not merely that anxiety does not bring in cash. It is that focusing on your ideas, your vision and your desire to create beauty (in whatever form that takes) opens you up to the flow of abundance. Now more than any time in recent memory is a vital moment to keep your mind focused on what you want to

Written By Lynn Kehoe

There are so many recipes out there if you look. That was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, during this week, I cheated and ate pizza and chicken wings. On those days, I didn’t lose any weight. Marjorie never cheats; she’s such an inspiration to me. I always go back on track, with her help! Lost: 4 pounds Day 20-27--The last week on the HCG drops. We are both surprised that we get full at 500 calories a day. We both look forward to our meals and really love the chicken and beef chili and the strawberry smoothie. Drinking lots of water and tea helps too. We drink the Chamomile and Yerba Mate teas. Lost: 6 pounds (even with a little cheating this week also)

t’s all about having a partner to get through most things in life, especially dieting. My friend, Marjorie, a stay-at-home mom like myself, and I always started our diets together and ended together. After starving ourselves for a week, we felt so deprived; we would scarf down a large popcorn and soda at the movie theater, after, of course, trying out the new restaurant that just opened. It all changed after I heard about a product from a local vitamin store. The product is called HCG. After reading about the product, I was excited and told Marjorie about it. It touted fast and effective weight loss; best of all, it would re-set your metabolism after you finished the drops. We did our due diligence on the internet and felt this was something that could work for us. We chose the drops instead

Days 28-30--End of our 30 days. Off the drops these last two days but still ate 500 calories. We’re both feeling wonderful and are

Lose Weight Quickly with HCG Drops of the doctor administered shots because of the cost (less than 10 percent of the doctor’s cost) and the time savings of not having to go to the doctor’s office every week for the shots. We both decided that this was going to be our last attempt at dieting, and if it didn’t work, we weren’t going on another diet…ever again! This is our journey…cravings, gorges, ups, downs. We’re both so excited about our progress, and how quickly we could drop the pounds, we were asked if we could share our story. Days 1 and 2--eat whatever you want and as much as you want. We had fun gorging at our favorite restaurants…Ate and Ate…liking this diet so far! Gained: 2 pounds…yikes! Day 3--reality sets in quickly. 4 oz of meat? That’s so tiny. Not so thrilled about the small amount of food. Drinking lots of tea. Lost: 2 pounds…Phew! Days 4-11--we are well into the diet. We both had cravings this week. Texted Marjorie because I wanted some salty potato chips. She told me to step out of the kitchen and go lay down. I did that. We also both had headaches and felt a little tired. Lying down really helped; drank more water and tea. Lost: 7 pounds – real progress Days 12-19--We are over the hard part. We love the hazelnut and chocolate flavored Stevia in our coffee and the chocolate over the strawberries! We both tried asparagus soup with chicken…wow, so good. We also took pictures of meals that we cooked and texted it to each other. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

amazed that we lost 17 pounds in 27 days. After days 28 through 30, we introduced more calories and are working out at the gym. We lost 3 more pounds, 20 pounds total, since and are still counting. Our metabolism is re-set and we both have more energy; the best thing is that all our clothes hanging in our closet, clothing we’ve held onto until we lost weight, all fit and now some are way too big. Now, we are trained and educated to eat healthy and make better choices when it comes to snacking at home or when at a restaurant. We’ve also learned that feeding our bodies with a little protein, lots of vegetables and some fruit will keep our bodies healthy and fit. Get a partner and start feeling like yourself again. We are so glad we did this LAST diet together! HCG was a great way to lose weight quickly and we would recommend the product to anyone who can dedicate 30 days to lose 20 plus pounds. Make sure you do your research on the product before starting the diet and if you decide to try the diet, be sure to get the drops from a reputable distributor or health food store. About the author: Lynn Kehoe is a stay-at-home mom with two children, Jenny age 12 and Nick age 10. Her children’s active lifestyle often makes it hard for her to cook healthy meals, which lead to too many stops at fast food restaurants. DECREASE YOUR TOXIC LOAD! By: Mary Sutton, P.T., Nutritional Consultant

A

are the only healthy fats that do not become toxic when heated. Eat organic butter, not margarine. Margarine is a non-food, synthetic and only one molecule away from being plastic.

ccording to the Environmental Working Group based in Washington, D.C. “Pollution is not only an environment issue, it’s a public health issue.” Everyone carries hundreds of toxic, lethal chemicals in their tissues. Chemical toxins and heavy metals build up in your body from what you eat and drink, what you breathe and what is absorbed though your skin. Studies show that there are over 287 chemicals present in a newborns’ blood with 180 of these known to cause cancer! The result of toxic build-up is chronic illness and disease, compromised immune systems, allergies, pain, accelerated aging, low energy and decreased mental clarity.

Eat products made of unrefined, 100% wholegrain flour such as from wheat, rice, oat or barley.

White flour is a non-food, toxic, causes free radical damage and is void of any nutrition. Not even a boll weevil will eat white flour. Eliminate baked goods, crackers and pastas made with white flour from your diet.

Choose sea salt rather than ordinary table salt. It is rich in minerals and does not cause or contribute to disease. Table salt is an isolated element removed from its natural array of minerals which creates imbalance and raises havoc in the body.

Ongoing detoxification of the body is important to eliminate toxic build-up. But it is also important to reduce your daily exposure to toxins. You can change your toxic burden with the daily choices you make. Here are some tips to improve your nutrition and health while decreasing toxic load.

Avoid packaged, processed pre-prepared foods. These contain preservatives, most of which are

harmful and toxic causing allergies, asthma and cancers. Nitrates are particularly nasty.

Buy organic as much as possible, not just fruits

& veggies but dairy, meats, nuts, coffee, grains, etc.! Are you thinking it’s too expensive?! How much do you value your health? The EPA has identified more than 55 pesticides that can leave carcinogenic residues in food. Artificial growth hormones given to cows increase the risk of breast cancer up to 7 times.

Beware of foods that are genetically modified or have received irradiation. Check the

code numbers on food: 9 are organically grown, 4 are conventionally grown with pesticides and herbicides, 8 are genetically modified. The irradiation symbol is a wholesome looking symbol of a flower! HB

Eat unrefined sugar, fats and grains. The

refining process has robbed food of nutrients and also makes it toxic to our bodies. Choose raw honey, agave, date sugar, dehydrated cane sugar juice or maple syrup rather than refined white, raw or brown sugar, corn syrup and fructose. Use stevia or xylitol, which are healthy sweeteners low in calories, rather than artificial sweeteners such as NutraSweet and Aspartame. Aspartame is the deadliest and has been linked to brain tumors.

know, when you lose your mother at such a young age, you miss out on a lot of support that you might need in life.” To experience greater congruity within himself and to more fully experience his loss, the patient should change his statements from the perspective of “you” to “I,” as in, “Now that I have lost my mother at such a young age, I feel such a painful loss; and I realize how much I will miss her throughout life, especially during those important milestones when I need her love and support the most.” In this example, when the patient expresses his feelings more directly, he is better able to make contact with his feelings and to grieve and heal, regardless of external expectations. This slight change in verbal expression can make an incredible difference in becoming congruent within the self and in resolving the tension among competing and unexpressed needs. There are many other verbal signs, as well as non-verbal body language, that indicate unresolved tension that blocks us from expressing our ever-changing true selves. Shakespeare could well have written, “To thine own self be true… in this moment” to describe the challenges of finding the balance among all of our competing needs, and speaking the whole truth of our inner selves. Resurgence of “Old” Therapy offers New Hope Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

The practice of UBI Therapy began in the 1920’s when a UBI device was developed for extracorporeal (outside the body) treatment of the blood. By the 1940’s, UBI came to be used to treat things like bacterial, viral and autoimmune diseases. Researchers came to understand that the central mechanism of the therapy was the secondary emissions of biophotons from blood cells activated by the treatment. But, enthusiasm over the new antibiotics and vaccines in the 1950’s caused the UBI device to be placed on the shelf even though, for certain indications (hepatitis, herpes and viral pneumonia), UBI was demonstrably superior. The development of multidrug resistance to antibiotics in recent years and the search for less toxic therapies have led to a renewed interest in UBI Therapy. By now, millions of patients have been successfully treated with UBI and scores of clinical trials have been conducted in Russia, Ukraine and the former East Germany. UBI is also currently used by some physicians in China and the United States.

the normal red blood cells to emit a kind of light called “biophotons.” The treatment of a small fraction (5 percent) of the blood then spreads throughout the entire volume of the blood, upon returning to the body. This secondary radiation, (biophotons emitted by the activated cells), destroys viruses, bacteria and (in autoimmune diseases) activated white blood cells. In autoimmune disorders, it appears that the metabolically active T-cells and other immune cells absorb much greater numbers of biophotons than ordinary body and immune cells, and this destroys them, thus slowing or stopping the disease. By the 1940’s, the results of UBI treatments were not only found to be beneficial in treating all kinds of infections, but also included inactivation of toxins; as well as an increase in the oxygen combining power of the blood and oxygen transportation to organs, activation of steroid hormones, dilation of blood vessels, activation of white blood cells, stimulation of cellular and humoral immunity, fibrinolysis, decreased viscosity of blood, improved microcirculation and decreased platelet aggregation.

It is successfully used to treat viral and bacterial pneumonia, polio, botulism, nonhealing wounds, encephalitis, peritonitis, asthma, hepatitis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other UBI Therapy is effective against many infectious, inflammatory, and autoimmune disorders. market will bear labels in English, but some exceptions exist, most commonly in examples from Chile and Argentina. Many old world wines, even those produced for the U.S. market, are still labeled in a way that can seem cryptic to American wine buyers. This type of labeling is most often encountered in Italian, French, Spanish or German wines and can present an even more challenging set of problems for those who aren’t familiar with Europe’s appellation systems and labeling laws. I will cover this topic in another column. For now let’s focus on how to read a domestic or English-language wine label. In the United States, we have a number of federal laws that govern how wines must be labeled. These laws focus on regulating things like alcohol percentage, place of origin and place of production. Our rules are relatively simple and pretty free of restrictions compared to other countries, particularly those of the great wine producing countries of Europe like Italy, France, Spain and Germany; all of which adhere to often centuriesold regulations. This results in greater freedom for American winemakers, but also allows more variables between similarly labeled wines. Wine made in the United States must, by law, contain at least the following information on its label: the name of the producer (the wine’s brand name or the name of the winery or winemaker), the location it was made (very often the same place the brand or winery name is based, but not always), the type of wine (either the varietal, like Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, or what’s known as a “proprietary name” as in “Big House

hoosing a wine is not necessarily simple. Sometimes the wine needs to fulfill criteria, such as local or organic, or be a specific varietal. It may need to fit a certain budget. Perhaps the wine will be a gift. Maybe it needs to represent a particular theme, or maybe you have figured out that you have an affinity for wines from a certain region. Once you have settled these basic questions and you set off for your store’s wine department, keep in mind that you do need to be armed with at least a simple understanding of how to read wine labels in order to be reasonably sure you know what you are getting. Novice wine drinkers report to me that negotiating the wine aisle of their local store has often involved suspending normal expected levels of consumer confidence in one’s purchase. Accepting that one has a weak grasp on exactly what one will end up with seems to be a given for many folks, and although navigating the world of wine labels can sometimes be a dizzying and humbling experience, a few basic tips should get you significantly closer to walking out of the store with a wine you can have confidence in. Let’s start by differentiating between domestic and foreign labels, which necessitates a quick explanation of the terms ‘old world’ and ‘new world’. Old world wine refers to those produced in Europe and the Middle East. New world wines are those made in the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. For the most part, new world wines produced for the U.S. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Red” or “Conundrum,” often indicating a blend of more than two varietals), the percentage of alcohol by volume (usually somewhere between 9 and 15 percent) and the place of origin (which geographical location the grapes came from). This is the minimum information required but usually a label will also note the vintage, although it is not legally bound to do so. Nonvintage wines are made from a blend of grapes from different years. Usually, though not exclusively, non-vintage wines are sparkling wines. Labels sometimes add phrases such as “estate bottled” which indicates that the wine in question was made from grapes from the producer’s own vineyards as opposed to fruit purchased from an outside source. Knowing a wine is estate bottled can be a clue to its quality but it’s no guarantee. A phrase like “vintner’s selection” however, is basically meaningless. This additional information could be considered extraneous and can be responsible for misunderstandings by consumers. Sometimes additional information on the label is helpful but usually it’s marketing jargon, having no legal definition, resulting in a cluttered or difficult-to-decipher wine label. And then there are all the pretty pictures and insignias, which, truth be told, often end up determining why a particular wine is chosen! The part that is usually the most mystifying for consumers is the “place of origin” designation. This is more commonly known as the appellation or A.V.A. which stands for American Viticultural Area. It’s pretty simple when a wine says, for example, “Ravenswood Zinfandel- California- 2008.” That means the wine contained is from Zinfandel grapes harvested from anywhere in California in the year 2008. Consider also “Bogle 2008 Old Vine Zinfandel” in which the term “old vines” has no inherent legal definition and the place of origin is not included on the front label, but instead noted on the back as being made from grapes from Lodi and Amador counties, where you are also told that the vines are in fact between 45 and 80 years old. And perhaps “2009 Grgich Hills Napa Valley Chardonnay” or “Boeger 2008 El Dorado Zinfandel” are both fairly straightforward. But things get a little more complicated when you start reading things like “Etude Pinot Noir- Carneros—2008.” What is Carneros? It’s the name of an officially designated A.V.A.

December 2010

located at the north end of San Pablo Bay and straddling both Napa and Sonoma counties, but in fact “Napa Valley” and “El Dorado” are also official A.V.A.s, although wider ones than Carneros. “California” is an A.V.A. as well, albeit a much wider one. More complicated still is “Patz & Hall 2007 Chardonnay Russian River Valley Dutton Ranch.” This label includes what is known as a “vineyard designation” (Dutton Ranch), which indicates the specific parcel of land the grapes came from and is not legally required, in addition to the A.V.A. (Russian River Valley) which is required. And things can get blurry pretty fast when you start seeing things like “2008 Radio-Coteau “La Neblina” Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.” Here, Sonoma Coast is the A.V.A. and “La Neblina” is an extraneous whimsical proprietary name, in Spanish no less. Do not forget that California isn’t the only state that makes wine in the U.S. Be aware you may see less familiar sounding labels such as “Fox Run 2008 Finger Lakes Riesling” from New York or “Elk Cove 2008 Wilamette Valley Pinot Gris” from Oregon. Again, wine labeling laws are federally mandated, so the format should be congruous regardless of the state the wine comes from. In any case, these are common types of phrasing that you are likely to see when perusing American wine labels. I’m afraid the rest is just practice. As I mentioned, our laws here in the U.S are relatively simple! Understanding wine labels is key in getting the most out of your wine purchase. You can then make some important general assumptions about the wine, based on your experiences with or what you may have read regarding a particular vintage, appellation, specific vineyard and even the alcohol content. It takes a little attention and practice, but making the effort to better understand wine labeling rules and appellation systems will ultimately lead to more satisfaction in your wine drinking adventures. KIDSCORNER

THE HEALTHY ADVENTURER

Written By Ariana Purcell The New Year is here! Usually, I make a resolution for the New Year. It is normally to get better grades, make new friends, read a new book or even help more around the house. This year, my resolution is to do better in math and raise my grade! I am at a C+ in my math class and I normally get an A. I would love to be at an A+. What’s your New Year resolution? If you can’t think of one, here’s an idea to get your creative juices flowing. What you’ll need: • Pen/Markers • Poster Board or Construction Paper • A variety of magazines (pick some that you don’t need any more) • Scissors • Glue What to do: 1) Look through the magazine and cut out anything that sparks your interest and cut that page of the magazine 2) Once you have enough cut-outs to cover your paper, start gluing them on the paper (it does not matter where you place the cut-outs…follow your instinct) 3) After you finish, take time to look at your creation and ask yourself a few questions about it: a. Why did I choose those photos? b. Why did I place it in that area of the paper? c. What is the relationship between the photos and placement, if any

JOKES

This exercise can sometimes help you find things you’re interested in, or things that you would like to involve in your life somehow. It might be a fun way to find your New Year’s resolution! HB

1: Why was the dog barking at the mailman? Allan Briggs is an 11-year-old fifth grader at Our Lady of the Snows School, Reno, NV. He has been making up jokes for the last 2 years. Last summer he gave his first stand up comedy act to a group of campers in the Ruby Mountains.

Most of the time jokes just come to him during the day. He hears a word and thinks about it for a minute and if it is a good word he will make a joke from it. He hopes that someday he can be a stand up comedian or a video game designer. ANSWERS: 1. Because he was delivering ‘cat’alogues.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

I began my healthy adventures in 1990. By combining bicycling, kayaking and hiking, I would eventually travel 4 times around the earth. I am almost 70 years old and have not been sick since 1972. It is never too late to live a healthy, active, adventuresome life as you will find out in a series of articles. Kayaking through Siberia, Part 1 I kept looking out of the airplane window. All I saw below me were frozen rivers and lakes, surrounded by snow covered forest. It was the 18th of May, 2009. Had I left Reno too early in the year for traveling with my kayak on the Yenisey River through Siberia? Well, I had, as I painfully was to find out in just a few days. The plane was now flying over Labrador, a lonely forest region in northeastern Canada. My kayak adventure was to take me from the city of Krasnoyarsk to the Arctic Ocean, meaning I would be heading much further north than the area below me. Somewhere down there was the community of Happy Valley. I had lived there in 1961, working at a nearby American Air Force base known as Goose Bay. Over time I met Walter, who came from the northern part of Germany where I grew up, near the shores of the Baltic Sea. Throughout all my childhood and youth I had dreamed of owning and paddling a foldable kayak. Walter had such a formidable boat. He offered me his Aerius II Klepper at a price I could not refuse. I took it for a few rides on the close-by Hamilton River and its tributaries. When my job ended, I moved to Quebec City and left the kayak behind with Walter. I would return in late August of 1962 and embark on a kayak trip that could have cost me my life. My plan was to paddle from Happy Valley to Quebec City, a stretch well over 1,500 km. What was I thinking? As an inexperienced kayaker, I was going to face some of the roughest waters on earth. HB To be continued… With joyful passion for peace and health, Hans, the healthy adventurer. “HB Magazine is a great source for everyday healthy living. The first time I opened HB, I found something I could use to make my daily life healthier. Just last month, I learned about posture (I have since taped the article to my desk). I really enjoy reading a magazine that doesn’t tell me how I need to buy more expensive clothes, wear more makeup and be very skinny. HB allows me to open a magazine and learn how to feel better about myself! To top it off, HB is local-- and I love that!”

– Mary Dini, Sage Ridge School

“I just moved from Massachusettes and we had similar magazine out east. I love this magazine because I’m looking for massage, Reiki and natural healing in our community and it helped me find it!” – New Reno Resident

“I didn’t think I had time to read the magazine, but then noticed the cover title “Brain Fog” & just had to pick it up.” - Shopper at Grass Roots Health Food Store

“HB Magazine is very informative. A lot of times when searching the Internet, I feel like I’m searching in the dark. I found HB magazine to be very concise, comprehensive and focused. It’s not advertorial, and has a lot of great articles. There’s so much information out there– Healthy Beginnings eases the search. I first found the February ‘08 issue of HB Magazine and I’m now a subscriber.” – Rochelle Linder, Spring Valley, NY

Janus--Inner Gateway to the New Year

Written By Eric Francis

J

anuary is the door to the new year-that’s what the word means, doorway. Often that’s true in terms of the new day planner or the resolution to drop 15 pounds, and more challenging in practice. Yet this year, the change in the calendar is carried forward by the momentum of two events--Mercury stationing direct on Thursday, Dec. 30, and an eclipse of the Sun on Tuesday, Jan. 4. In case the people around you are wondering what is happening that week, you can tell them it’s just astrology. Yet the astrology has a message and it offers some technique for moving through the psychic environment that it describes. The background is that many are likely to be somewhat stressed by whatever happened through the very end of the year, which might include overtired and ready for a retreat. That would be well advised. The adventure of Mercury retrograde ending can wind us up, though the tension has a way of letting go as Mercury changes apparent directions.

Yet it’s helpful to take the shift gently and gather your new momentum as Mercury itself does, on a nice, even acceleration curve. Start slowly; feel the shift in emphasis; gradually let problems untangle themselves, and breathe into the new cycle of Mercury-direct. This leads in a few days toward an eclipse. Mercury therefore is stationing direct during the dark of the Moon--the last few days of a lunar cycle, heading into a New Moon that is really a solar eclipse. So the idea illustrated in the planets is, do your best to take a retreat. With the ‘mandatory’ holidays past, take a breath and focus on what you want to create for yourself during the next four seasons. Authentic resolutions (as we call them) are not really intellectual concepts but rather depend on an inner quality of resolving. You can think of that as “solving again,” or from another context, of ‘seeing clearly’. So think of your ‘New Years’ resolutions’ as gradually gathering a vision, and focusing on it until it reaches you down to your heart and your bones. The solar eclipse will make it easier to draw yourself inward, though as you do so you may encounter shadow material that you may want to avoid; so factor that in as you embrace a deeper level of your truth and put it to work for you.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

The eclipse of the Sun, which takes place in Capricorn, has a theme of relationships. To find this theme you have to peer into ancient astrology, but it’s there to see. In particular, this eclipse talks about the structure of our relationships, and being open to changes in that structure. Much of the challenge we face in relationships has as much to do with the “relation” as it does with the “ship,” and you can think of the ship as the vessel or structure. Often we get caught in these structures, or ideas about them. The eclipse is inviting us to notice how we feel within the structure of the experience of any other person in our lives--and to question from a deep and intuitive place whether the shell has become more important than what it’s supposed to contain. This year, the door of Janus--the god of gateways--is an inner path. It’s a path to confidence that can help you acknowledge your personal truth and act on it, with less guilt, fear and insecurity than usual. That would be nice, wouldn’t it? And it would leave some extra room for love. HB Eric Francis is the author of the Planet Waves column, available by subscription at PlanetWaves.net.
