COVERSTORY

I

Written By Ffjorren Frisbee

remember as a child, time seemed to move so slowly. Yet now, in my late fifties, time is moving at warp speed. We are already halfway into 2014! It is already July, the month we celebrate our independence and freedom as the United States of America. This is a very curious time we live in, and I wonder what our founding fathers would say about the way our federal government has expanded into almost every aspect of our lives. George Orwell’s book 1984, written in 1949, is timelier than ever. The only difference is that “Big Brother” is no longer the right wing conservative establishment. In my opinion, the establishment, or Big Brother of today, consists of political progressive ideologues who bully their way into power by acting as if they are one of the middle class. They have led people to believe that they have their best interests at heart (what a farce).

T

he Long, lazy day. Sun glimmering on the water. Laughter echoing down the breeze. The warm scent of BBQ wafting through the air. Children playing. Family gathering…a summer picnic is in play.

You might ask yourself why a publisher of a health magazine would use magazine real estate space to discuss civics and politics. It is simple. Hard-working, caring citizens are becoming emotionally stressed and physically sick because they witness Washington politicians change the values they grew up with, a nation built on the principals of personal exceptionalism and freedom from an overreaching government. It was my understanding a president should become neutral when he takes office. He should take off his party hat and govern from a position that is good for all its citizens; decisions should be made for the whole, not just minority groups that can help reelect his or her party into power.

A picnic is a great way to connect with the outdoors, while sharing food and fun with the people you’ve invited. It’s a great way to catch a glimpse of summer, especially if your summer is swamped and does not allow for vacation, time off or little to no time away from your normal routine. Try mixing things up a bit, and get the most out of your summer: • All work and no play? Take your lunch to work (and throw in a blanket). Find a patch of grass over your lunch break and cop a squat! • Summer events taking over? Host a “Ladies Garden Party” for that baby shower you have to plan…have tea and cake in your backyard, a local park or a friend’s garden.

I received a call from a reader last week who was very thankful to read someone’s words who cares about our country’s destiny and about our nation’s value system. I encourage everyone, no matter what your political views, to talk with one another. Learn why people think the way they do, you might be surprised by the answers you hear. This is the only way we can find common ground.

• Family get-together in your charge? Picnic activities involve the young and old alike (bocce ball, lawn darts, croquet, bean bag toss and more). • Need some quiet time? Take a hike (literally). Bring a few snacks and a cold drink, and find a quiet spot along your hike. Sit and listen to the sounds of nature, while nourishing your body and drinking in the beauty around you.

Putting my opinions aside (as they are my opinions and not necessarily those of our writers and advertisers), as always, enjoy our July issue and support our advertisers. They are local businesses that really do care about you and your health concerns. I wish you all a Happy and Healthy 4th of July!

• No green? Grass, that is. Find some space in your living room and throw down a blanket. Make sure all electronics are off and the windows are open. Bring out the food, a few board games and, Presto, an indoor picnic (kids will love it). Have a lovely 4th of July…and we hope you also find your happy picnic place this summer!

The BELIEVE art sculpture, part of a word series that has become a fixture at the annual Burning Man event, is being installed today at City Plaza, next to Reno City Hall. It will be on temporary display until the week of July 14, according to artist and Reno resident Jeff Schomberg.

PRICE DOES MATTER!

“I’m really excited to be working with the City of Reno and the arts community,” says Schomberg, who creates the large steel sculptures along with fellow artist Laura Kimpton. “It’s an honor to have BELIEVE displayed on the plaza.”

WHEN QUALITY IS THE SAME OR BETTER!

The City collaborated with Schomberg to install the sculpture in coordination with the filming of the American Idol Audition Bus Tour event that will be held in Reno on July 11 (set up) and July 12 (filming). The sculpture is one of a series of words that have been featured at Burning Man for the past five years, joining MOM, LOVE, OINK and EGO. “BELIEVE creates an inspirational community gathering space and photo opportunity, which will highlight downtown Reno’s river corridor and our partnership with local artists and Burning Man,” says Christine Fey, Resource Development and Cultural Affairs Manager for the City of Reno. here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of wellbeing, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

The Sacredness of

Dangerousness Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD

B

You are dangerous not so much because you are strong, quick or skilled in fighting. You are dangerous because life supports those who are willing to fight for themselves, who are willing to fight for what is right. Therefore, if it is your time to fight, you are not as alone as you may think. Although none of us is invincible, we are all potentially dangerous. And dangerousness is a sacred thing.

efore my father died, he said that the worst thing about growing old was that other men stopped seeing you as dangerous. I’ve always remembered that, how being dangerous was sacred, a badge of honor. You live your life by a code, an ethos. Every man does. It’s your shoreline. It’s what guides you home. And trust me, you’re always trying to get home.” -Lieutenant Rorke in the movie, Act of Valor

For more info, contact Dr. Andy Drymalski, Reno and Carson City psychologist at (775) 786-3818, or visit online at renocarsonpsychologist.com. Visit his blog at Jungstop.com.

To be dangerous is sacred. This may seem odd. When we think of something being sacred or holy, our first thoughts more likely involve images of wonder and beauty, love, wisdom, peace, or purity. We may think of Jesus, Buddha, the mystery of the universe, the glory of a summer’s day, or the spontaneity and innocence of a small child. These things represent the light side of sacredness, the sacred as inspiration, healing, harmony and wholeness. But the sacred has a dark side. It protects what is good and battles what is evil. God is Love, but God is also Dangerous.

See ad on this page.

Are you a force to be reckoned with? Would someone not want to mess with you? You may not see yourself in this way. You may not be very strong or imposing, you might even be weak, frail, or uncoordinated. Yet, there is a part of you that is capable of being dangerous. Your dangerousness is instinctual. It is present whenever you are willing to fight for something you deeply love or cherish.

THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH

MY NECK RIGHT? (Part 1 of 2)

Written By Dr. Tony Jensen

Acute or Chronic Neck Pain

• You have acute or chronic pain in the neck

• Headaches

• High blood pressure

Most people only think they have a neck problem when they are actually having a pain in their neck. If you are experiencing acute neck symptoms after doing some activities that leave after a couple of days, it is normal as your body is fixing itself from your minor injuries. What isn’t normal is to have neck pain that doesn’t go away after a couple days to a week, is chronic in nature (lasting more than four months), or symptoms that come and go and are getting more frequent or intense with time. If left alone, in most cases, it will continue to adapt abnormally and start to degenerate due to abnormal stress being put upon it.

• Thyroid problems

Headaches

• Arm and hand pain, tingling and numbness

• Breathing problems

WebMD.com defines headache pain as, “pain [that] results from signals interacting between the brain, blood vessels, and surrounding nerves. During a headache, specific nerves of the blood vessels and head muscles are activated and send pain signals to the brain. It’s not clear, however, why these signals are activated in the first place.” Headaches can be associated with a subluxation (pinched nerve), trauma to the head, emotional stress, hormone changes, smells, foods, noise’s, lighting, weather changes, increased physical activity, illness (I.e. colds, etc.), stress, excessive medication use, tension and

ou could be having neck problems right now and not even realize it. Or, maybe you think those symptoms are because of other things? Here are some of the symptoms that could be associated with neck problems:

High Blood Pressure There are two types of high blood pressure. Primary hypertension (essential) usually tends to develop over many years, and there’s no identifiable cause. According to the Mayo Clinic, secondary hypertension “tends to appear suddenly and cause higher blood pressure than does primary hypertension. Various conditions and medications can lead to secondary hypertension.”

Is Stress causing your Pain? Have you been involved in an auto accident?

TighT muscles can pull your spine out of alignment!

A study was performed on 50 hypertensive individuals, looking at how a specific adjustment to the Atlas (also known as C-1) would change hypertension. Individuals with high blood pressure and misaligned C-1 were specifically enrolled in the study. Half of the patients received a carefully tailor-made adjustment based on their results. Half received a “sham intervention,” or fake treatment. Participants were fully assessed again after the alignment, and at the end of eight weeks. The authors of the study say the improvement in blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic readings) following the correction of Atlas misalignment, was similar to that seen by giving patients two different blood pressure-lowering drugs simultaneously. The reduction in blood pressure continued into the eighth week.

The Physics of Belief

Changing Belief Systems to Create a Different Life Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt, PLR

D

uring the last ten years, most of us have been exposed to the idea that we create our own reality. Some of us have dismissed it out of hand. Some have decided it may be true for others but not for us. And some have welcomed it with open arms, feeling that at last we can consciously and intentionally, have some control over our lives. Quantum physicists such as Dr. William Tiller and Dr. Fred Allen Wolf (featured in the documentary What the Bleep Do We Know?) are proving that consciousness in the form of thoughts, intentions and beliefs has everything to do with what shows up in our lives. But very few of us understand how this works. Actually the mechanism is directly interlinked with our belief system--what we’ve been taught to think we ought to be experiencing. Physicists have learned that there is no physical reality without our imagination to give it life, to give it existence. Without further explanation, most of us think that is a weird idea. So what are belief systems? They’re systems and structures which form a pattern--a series, or a cycle of ideas or observations, allowing us to create a perception of continuity. And every one of these beliefs have a certain vibrational resonance, a particular frequency that gathers to itself other complimentary thoughts

10

and beliefs which bring about our physical reality. Well that sounds complicated! Esther Hicks of Abraham fame says it like this, “A belief is just a thought you keep on thinking.” In other words, most of what we believe is what we were taught to believe, during those 18 years we were growing up--in a very structured society, which had many ideas about what was real and what was and wasn’t possible. Even though we had “free will to think what we wanted,” by the time we became adults we were dragging around a mass of other people’s beliefs, some of which didn’t even agree with each other. And that’s just the beginning. The beliefs we’ve accrued over the years run like a computer program in the back of our minds--oftentimes without our even knowing they’re there. We take these “background beliefs” for granted without ever questioning them because they’ve become so ingrained within us. These beliefs are a backdrop against which we see and interpret our lives, whether the beliefs are true or not. This is a stage set, and we have accepted the idea that there is only one way for that stage to be set. So, it’s against that background that we measure everything in our lives. Not only that, but we are silently beaming out these belief systems to everyone and

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

July 2014

everything around us, like a radio signal. That alone is keeping us stuck in our old beliefs because we see our old reality being reinforced. We don’t KNOW it’s being reinforced by our own beliefs because we were never taught this. Most parents didn’t know much about the physics of consciousness. Enter a new idea, such as “We create our own reality,” which is certainly different from what we were taught growing up. The background physics behind that idea is “Everything is connected,” and even “We are all one” but most people get to those ideas much later. So we’ll stay with the “reality” idea for now. The first thing that happens when you’re presented with a new idea is a feeling of resistance. This is a common reaction. Should you dismiss it out of hand, or actually consider it? It usually depends on the source. If it’s someone you respect you might listen. If it’s something your friends or family wouldn’t accept, you might not think of it ever again, for we were programmed to stay with the ideas of our own tribe. But let’s say you DO think about it and actually try it out. It goes without saying that you’re going to use the new techniques you’ve learned to expect and intend something positive, something that you want. So as it begins to work, your belief system begins to change. If you call it “coincidence” and dismiss it, the old belief system comes back. If you continue to experiment, talk to other open minded people, ignore the naysayers, and read about other’s positive experiences using the new ideas, you begin to move toward a different reality. Things change in your daily life. You begin to “attract” different people, opportunities and situations. This may astound and fascinate you. As a result you may search out additional techniques to fine-tune your new-found talent. As you continue to use the new techniques, you find even more situations you can change. Life becomes an adventure again, you become more excited about the possibilities; and as a result, the vibrational frequencies of joy, appreciation, and gratitude beam out from you, attracting even more opportunities for happiness and success. All this because you tried out one new valid idea, and as a result, changed the background program running in your mind. You’ve used physics to change your reality and become much more in control of your life.

Medically Supervised Weight Loss: A Prescription for Lifestyle Change

E

Written By Patricia A. Yost, MD

xcess overall body weight, and higher body fat content in particular, increases a person’s risk for heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, arthritis, liver, cancer of the liver, kidney, breast, uterus, prostate, and colon and early death. Research has shown that doctors can help their patients by encouraging them to discuss their weight concerns and offer respectful, nonjudgmental support. Physicians can empower individuals in lifestyle change through a customized, evidence-based, and multicomponent approach, which is medically supervised weight loss. Weight loss therapy is advised when BMI is greater than 30, or the person has risk factors and has a BMI 25-29.9, or a waist circumference of 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men. Conditions occurring along with obesity that put a person at higher risk are heart disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gallstones, stress incontinence, abnormal menstrual cycles, high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, abnormal lipids, abnormal blood sugar and age (Men >45, Women >55). A minimum goal should be a weight loss rate of one to two pounds per week, or 10 percent weight loss over six months. Moderate weight loss can result in a reduced need for

medications, improve or reverse the above conditions, and even avoid surgery! The most effective and long lasting weight loss is achieved with a combination of diet modification, increased physical activity, and behavioral change, with or without the addition of weight loss medications. Dietary change accounts for about 70 percent of weight loss, with an emphasis on small frequent meals and snacks, moderate calorie reduction and portion control. Very low calorie diets have not been found to be more effective than moderate calorie reductions and should not be used routinely. Sustainable change is more likely to be achieved when cultural and personal preferences are taken into account during education about nutrition. Food diaries and frequent visits are important to track choices to favor lean sources of protein, more vegetables, fiber and complex carbs, avoidance of simple carbs and sugar, healthier fats and increased water. Finally, behavioral and spiritual components involved with changing eating behavior cannot be overlooked such as managing stress, relaxation techniques, social support, and avoiding triggers for emotional eating or situations that promote temptation. Very low calorie diets have not been found to be more effective than moderate calorie reductions and should not be used routinely. ...continued from page 12 Increased physical activity is a key lifestyle change for achieving and maintaining weight loss. A combination of regular aerobic exercise and strength training is recommended to burn more fat and calories, while building muscle and maintaining bone mass. Shorter sessions of high intensity interval training may be just as effective as longer duration steady-paced aerobic exercise, while resulting in faster weight loss and may be easier to fit into a busy schedule. Men have a higher metabolic rate, due in part to their increased lean muscle mass, and may seem to lose weight more easily. Women, in particular, need to add weight training to increase their metabolic rate, especially after menopause. Every person’s training strategy should be approved by their doctor according to their individual needs and limitations.

Because of changes in body composition and biochemistry with age, maintaining weight reduction must be a lifelong endeavor. With or without the additional help of medications, many doctors are willing to regularly engage with their patients to achieve and maintain meaningful weight loss and lifestyle change.

Prescription medications should be considered if lifestyle changes have not been effective after about six months, or in higher risk patients. Some work by suppressing the appetite and inducing a sense of fullness, some work by blocking fat absorption, and some help with impulse control. Most appetite suppressants previously prescribed were only meant to be used for a few weeks and this was not enough to allow for behavioral change, resulting in regain. Two recently FDA approved medications have been studied and found to be safe and effective for weight loss for periods up to six months to a year for an average 10-15 percent weight loss, allowing for healthier habits to become established. Not everyone will respond to a particular medicine, however, and it is important that a person taking any weight loss medication is closely monitored by a physician.

Conscious Box

I

Written By Ffjorren Frisbee

n honor of July, the month we celebrate freedom and independence (and what HB Magazine calls “footloose and fancy free” month), I’m taking a look at a product that frees you from having to make a full-size purchase without knowing the product--not to mention, products free of junk that hurts our earth and our bodies… kids liked the Pasta Chips (Vintage Italia) and the Organic Fruit Shredz (Plum). There was a little something for everyone!

After recently trying several sample-filled boxes, I was excited to receive my first Conscious Box! It was purported to provide all the lovely little snacks, supplements, coupons and pamphlets of health oriented information a natural lifestyle gal could ask for, all tucked neatly inside an adorable cardboard box.

Sample boxes are absolutely the “in” thing at the moment. So, it comes down to finding the box that suits your needs. The great thing about this concept: it does not cost much to join or try a box or two, and if you don’t like what you received, you’re not locked into a huge box or container of that particular product. So, it cuts on waste, helps your budget and helps you make easier purchase decisions. What more could you ask for in a world where everything is getting more expensive, faster paced and filled with so many choices, making a decision can be the hardest thing you do! .

It came. It opened. It surprised. The box revealed a full-size bottle of a Mate Tea Late by Tea’s Tea. It also contained a fullsize box of Bach’s “Rescue Pearls,” homeopathic stress relief (hello: just what I needed). An envelope of coupons also called my name (a free song download, a coupon for (yay) Rescue Relief and more)! There were also lots and lots of smaller, sample-size products, which filled the rest of the box! Great samples of supplements (Hero Nutritionals, Allimax, Nordic Naturals and PurAbsorb), natural beauty products (Natralia and Weleda), deodorant towelettes (Crystal) and even dishwasher tablets (Ecover). Breast Cancer is Grossly Overtreated

M

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

illions of asymptomatic women undergo breast screening annually because their doctors tell them to do so. Not only are these women’s presumably healthy breasts being exposed to highly carcinogenic x-rays, but thousands have received a diagnosis of “breast cancer” for entirely benign lesions that, when left untreated, would have caused no harm to them whatsoever!

treated aggressively with the present day “standard of care” (lumpectomy, mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy) is disproved.

The International Journal of Cancer published a new study titled, “Is carcinoma in situ a precursor lesion of invasive breast cancer?” It reveals that 80 percent of early stage breast lesions do NOT progress to more concerning forms (invasive breast cancer), even after 20 years!

There are new non-invasive, safe and accurate tests that can be used to periodically monitor these in situ lesions, so they can be treated aggressively (with Integrative therapies, of course) if they do start to progress into more dangerous tissue.

It is unfortunate most conventional doctors are slow to accept new information, even when proven in scientifically valid studies, if it conflicts with what they have been taught to believe.

This is very exciting new information for those who are willing to hear and learn from it. It can also help alleviate much of the stress caused by the over diagnosis of cancer, not to mention the very damaging results caused by overtreatment with conventional therapies. .

There has been a long standing cancer myth that is harming tens of thousands of women each year. The myth is that in situ (nonor slow-growing breast lesions) inevitably progress to malignant cancers that will cause harm or death if left untreated through conventional methods. This is simply not true. The 25 year prospective follow-up study measured the probability of development of invasive breast cancer following the diagnosis of carcinomas in situ. They were separated into ductal (DCIS) and lobular (glandular) (LCIS).

References: 1. International Journal of Cancer 2. GreenMedinfo.com

The study found that at 20-year post CIS diagnosis, more than 80 percent of them remained free of invasive breast cancer!

Poison Hemlock

to the Rescue A

Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

Sad Case

Conium Maculatum

A 74-year-old male, who retired from a very responsible job, came in with a four year history of severe “dizziness until I can no longer see.” The symptoms were more severe in the last two years and “horrible in the last month,” as he put it. Accompanying the dizziness, persistent “nausea until I vomit.” He couldn’t move his head without bringing on the vertigo, nausea and vomiting. Additionally, he had difficulty breathing, blurred vision with intolerance to light, very unsteady on his feet, chronically fatigued with muscle cramps in his legs and feet at night. He was barely able to walk, with one hand on the wall and one hand on his wife’s shoulder.

Conium maculatum, poison hemlock, is a great remedy for the elderly. It causes an ascending paralysis, dying from the feet up. Explaining this, and homeopathy in general, to patients is frequently challenging. The counter intuitive concepts involved with prescribing poisons, snake venoms, toad sweat, poison mushrooms, arsenic, strychnine, and in this case, poison hemlock, the famous poison used to kill Socrates, takes a few minutes. Once assured there is no possibility of there being any of the original substance in the homeopathic preparation after hundreds and thousands of dilutions, they are prepared to take the leap.

He had been seen by ear, nose and throat doctors, neurologist and cardiologist, all with negative findings. He was on three blood pressure medications and a vertigo remedy. His lab work showed large red blood cells with very low sodium and chloride, low testosterone and low thyroid. His hair analysis showed double high mercury and very low levels of all the beneficial minerals.

Happy Beginnings

Visit www.HBmag.com

After receiving his homeopathy treatment, he was instructed to call in a couple of days to report progress, or lack thereof. After two days, 80 percent of his symptoms had resolved. In two weeks, they had all resolved.

Becoming Conscious of

I

Your Thoughts Written By Leigh Hurst

n the world we live in, we are bombarded with so much visual and audio stimuli. It creates chaos, stress, and uncertainty within ourselves. You may find yourself always checking your phone or computer for the next “thing,” the next email, text message, or a Facebook notice. The more we get “connected” to social media and gadgets, the more we need to “disconnect.” How do you make a deeper connection with your true self and realize that you are more than your thoughts and emotions?

recognize that you are not your thoughts. Try to catch yourself thinking. Bringing awareness to this behavior is the first step towards being mindful. Once you have brought awareness to your thoughts, it is a new process of learning not to “think” all the time. It’s learning to bring stillness to your body and your mind. This creates inner peace, which we are all striving for. If you are not able to find inner peace nothing will satisfy you for very long.

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing your attention on the moment and, without judgment, observing all aspects of the world around you as well as your thoughts, feelings and reactions. It is also called being aware or present.

An example of becoming aware might be, imagining yourself at the supermarket. Perhaps you find yourself waiting in a long line in the grocery store, or any store, which is the situation. You become irritated by what your mind is telling you about the situation, which is that you have more important things to do than to wait in a line. Instead, notice the thoughts and find yourself actually enjoying the moment. Knowing you are exactly where you need to be in that moment. There’s nothing you can do about it, so why not breathe in deeply and find things to be grateful for?

The first step is observing your thoughts. Become aware of what you are thinking. Are you constantly telling yourself you are angry, depressed, impatient or sad, possibly thoughts from the past? Do you have to always tell a dramatic story to bring attention to yourself and keep drama flowing? Our minds hold 70,000 thoughts a day, that’s a lot of thinking! Take time to

“The day you decide that you are more interested in being aware of your thoughts than you are in the thoughts themselves-that is the day you will find your way out” – Michael Singer Enhancing your physical & spiritual journey

through aging

Being mindful is really about paying attention in a particular way, on purpose in this very moment and being nonjudgmental. One exercise to practice staying in the present moment is to do these three things when thoughts arise:

• Pause

• Become Aware

• Being present

Consultations | Classes | Lectures • Aging & Intimacy • Conscious Transitioning (Death & Dying) • Meditation/Mindfulness/Reiki • Manifesting for Change • Healing through movement & sound • Spiritual & Graceful Aging

AWAKE

& AGING

Stress is a total mind/body response to a perceived threat. Much stress comes from imagined threats. When we begin to pay attention not to our thoughts or ideas about things, but to life as it really is, we are able to pay attention to the actual threats and dispel our fears. By being mindful, we are alert to what is really happening and we can act clearly and wisely to the real threats.

Why am I not getting better?

I

Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

If I had to draw up a list of what’s causing us to be sick and unresponsive to the singular, dogmatic approach (it’s all parasites! It’s all food allergies! It’s all inflammation! Etc.), it would include a multitude of social and recently discovered and understood modern developments, such as:

t’s a question I’m now hearing every day. “I’ve tried everything doc. I’ve gone to the top doctors in the field for my [insert ailment here]--Fibro, IBS, Peripheral Neuropathy, Cystitis cough, allergies, weight loss, migraines, dizziness etc.--and I’ve been a perfect patient. What’s the problem? I’m not getting better.” The problem, I believe, is the same as what’s causing the development of an only now understood and appreciated chronic patient population (chronic means having a condition for more than six weeks). And what’s causing the inability to get better is the societal and complex issues involved that are clinically unresponsive to “singular” modality type treatments. In other words, one-size-fits-all pills (medical or nutritional), surgeries, diets etc. Frequently, this single modality type of approach is what the patient sought out and often timed feels better for a while, only to have whatever the treatment modality is being employed stop working in a six to 12 month period or less.

• Medications. 1) The development of long term use of (or several trials of) antibiotics, from childhood forward, is creating the infamous “superbugs.” It is also destroying gut function, which affects all bodily systems. 2) The over-usage of acetaminophen; which we have come to eat like candy due to it being deemed safe in this country. It’s daily use, particularly when coupled with alcohol, causes liver dysfunction, damage to the stomach, intestines and cell walls, creating the inflammation it’s supposed to stop. 3) Polypharmacy: people on more than three drugs-WOW! How many of you are experiencing this? New societal development thanks to too many doctors not talking to each other about your meds, and pharmaceutical company advertisements making drugs seemingly impossible to live without. NURTURE Written By Allison Prater

Nurturing Independence

I

t’s amazing watching my son transform from baby to toddler before my eyes. Every day brings new words, discoveries, accomplishments and challenges. I am astounded by how much he has changed since he was born. So far, for me, one of the greatest joys of parenting is watching my son learn something new. It’s not only the exhilaration of experiencing his first steps, or his first words, it’s also exciting to witness his learning process. I recently discovered the work of Magda Gerber through her website rie.org. R.I.E., or Resources for Infant Educarer, provides education for parents, as well as professional caregivers such as nannies. Her basic approach really resonates with me, and I find that it works very well for nurturing my son’s budding independence. R.I.E. is centered on the principles of respect for the child as fully competent. Instead of being treated as a passive object, a child is trusted to initiate their own learning process. Caregivers and parents are encouraged to give their babies and children plenty of open ended play time, which allows for freedom of movement and independent exploration. During these times, parents should simply observe what their child is doing, instead

24

of trying to impose or influence the child’s play choices, or attempting to “teach” the child. In doing so, we are able to more clearly see our child’s unique communication, strengths, challenges and needs. This open ended play is balanced by plenty of time spent giving our child our fully present attention, especially during normal care activities such as bathing, dressing, meal times, etc. By inviting even the youngest infant to be an active participant, instead of a passive recipient, the energy is replenished for both child and caregiver. It also nurtures confidence in the child. Open ended play time is also supported by providing the child with an environment that is physically safe, emotionally nurturing, and yet cognitively challenging. It should also provide for plenty of freedom of movement. Time to explore outdoors in nature, where a child can hear birds, feel the sun and wind, and ideally, get dirty is also extremely beneficial. While caregivers are there to protect the child by establishing clearly defined limits, it is important to give the child space to explore, and even to struggle a little.

Summer News

City of Reno partners with locals to offer free fitness classes Shape Up Reno, a free fitness series organized by the City of Reno, has returned and is now being offered through various local businesses.

In her article, “Nature Makes Sense,” Angela Hascom, a pediatric occupational therapist, observes, “As a pediatric occupational therapist that uses the outdoors as both a form of prevention and treatment of sensory issues, I feel that even the youngest of children, whenever possible, should be playing outdoors, and at a very early age.” She goes on to say, “Many children are kept from crawling. Even more children are kept from falling. Plenty of children are told “no” when they attempt to climb on top of a rock or pick up a stick. Little kids are told not to spin in circles and are kept from rolling down hills. It is my opinion--supported by observing scores of kids, in clinic and out--that by constantly restricting children’s movements we impede the development of strong vestibular systems (balance), which most children will achieve naturally through physical trial and error. If we don’t allow children to take (safe) risks and test themselves, they can seem clumsy, uncoordinated and unsafe at an early age.” She also advocates letting children be barefoot often, especially outdoors. Walking barefoot outdoors is great for little feet because it helps to integrate the Babinski reflex and prevent complications such as toe-walking, balance and coordination issues. Spinning helps children to establish their midline-awareness of their center. It also helps give them great body awareness, and supports visual skills and emotional regulation. Activities such as rolling down the hill or spinning in circles for fun are also building the brain! By not overly interfering in my son’s play, he is able to play by himself without needing me to entertain him. This makes it much easier for me to cook a meal, or finish a chore or get a yoga practice in, while in the same room. By not overly interfering, when I do assert a limit or boundary, he is more likely to take me seriously and listen, because I don’t hover over him saying “no!” thousands of times a day. I see that my son is very confident in his movement. I love watching the games he creates and hearing the songs he sings to himself. The websites listed in the references below have lots of amazing articles related to R.I.E. if you are interested in learning more about this approach to parenting and childcare.

• Energy function. Are your mitochondria--the energy center of your cells--getting what they need to produce energy? Are your thyroid, blood sugar and adrenals working well? How about the Krebs Acid cycle, which needs all those vitamins and minerals you are not absorbing? Or the CoQ10 your statin drugs are destroying, how’s that going? Dysfunctions of any or all of these decrease mitochondria, and doctors and nutritionists are building entire practices around this one aspect of biochemical breakdown release. If Mitochondria are not functioning, you have reduced energy function and you can’t heal.

...continued from page 22

• Hormones. Too much testosterone in a woman? Too much estrogen in a man? Taking birth control? Treating low testosterone or low estrogen with long term hormone replacement therapy. These are only some of the socially, and “scientifically,” evolved issues contributing to chronic conditions in this category. • Toxins. Believe it or not, it is not the biggest category. Pollutions and environmental toxins are factors, but are last on the list for a reason. Heavy metal exposure, ground water toxins, mercury and aluminum can be factors if your symptoms are neurological. This problem is more societal than “genetic.” But, these cases are the exception, not the rule. In general, chronic conditions that “are not getting well.”

• The drastic societal changes of the last 40-50 years have been breathtaking. Societal changes due to family and workplace, along with new developments of 24/7 news cycles and such, give our brains no time to rest. We are probably the most stressed out society on planet earth, and it matters. A small sample of abnormal physiology due to stress is damage to lung and small intestine lining alteration of the immune system and much, much more.

These are the societal, scientific and evolutionary challenges for the patient who can’t get well. The biggest problem is all these potential contributors to poor health need to be assessed in the patient who can’t get well. No two patients are alike, and you must treat the patient and not the diagnosis. Each individual has chronic symptoms as a result of some combination of the above factors, and more. Dogmatic, one-causes, “one size fits all” protocol solutions won’t work anymore than the nibbling method of “let’s try this now, and if that doesn’t work, let’s try that later” method. Not for the patient who just can’t get better.

• Foods. Particularly, 1) food allergies, which are far more prevalent today, 2) S.A.D., the Standard American Diet--think McDonalds and the development of fast and processed foods, as well as Burger King, 3) Genetically modified food, and 4) Antibiotics in the food supply--mainly in the meat industry. • Infection and inflammation. 1) Infections, too many to list. Viruses in the system. Parasites (you don’t have to travel outside the country to get these. They now come here. H Pylori, chronic bacterial infections (resistant to the above mentioned antibiotics) are all relatively new developments to our “advanced” life “styles”. 2) Inflammation, caused by essentially everything listed in this article.

• Nutrition. What nutrients are actually making it from your food to your cells? Are your foods, supplements, etc., being broken down correctly and being absorbed, or are they going into the toilet due to HCL deficiency? Is it being absorbed properly once broken down? If not, why not? Is it being utilized properly by the cells--stress, gut problems, autoimmune disease, drugs, and too much alkalinity (to be discussed another day) and more, are all causative factors in this aspect of nutrition status.

KIDSCORNER

O

“Kids Corner”

Written By Bella & Aramia Zolfaghar (7-year-old twins)

ver Mother’s Day weekend, we ran our first race. It was called the “mini mermaid.” It was in Fremont, CA. It was really fun. It was about 1.5 miles. First, we started running the race together. Then, Bella started to go super speed and she got ahead of Mia. Both of us each found one friend during the race. Bella started a conversation with her new friend during the race. Mia started slowing down with her new friend and they talked a little bit too. And then, Mia asked her friend if she could go ahead of her, and she said yes. Bella finished the race before Mia, but she waited and cheered for Mia to come in at the finish line! Our next race was a mini mud run in Humble, TX in June. We ran with our little brother, our older sister and our grandma. It was about one mile long. It had a couple of mud piles and holes filled with water and mud. Our uncle came with his girlfriend and her parents to watch. He told us that whoever came in first (between our little brother and us) would win $10. Guess who came in first? Mia! Mia felt very happy. Our little brother came in second, and Bella came in third. We had lots of fun, but, it was not that muddy. We played in the mud after the race so we could get really muddy.

BOOKREVIEW

Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan,M.Ed.,CCHt, PLR

BRAINSTORM The Power and Purpose of the Teenage Brain By Daniel J. Siegel, M.D.

T

This book is described as an inside-out guide to the emerging adolescent mind--surprisingly listed as ages twelve to twenty-four. During this time, the brain physically changes, letting go of unused neurons and adding others. This author is the father of two adolescents, so he was highly motivated to figure out what was going on in their brains. He explains that a number of myths about adolescence--for example, that it is merely a stage of “immaturity” filled with often “crazy” behavior--is seriously in error. He reveals how adolescence is in fact a vital, hopefully positive time in our lives in terms of charting the course to become successful adults. According to Siegel, during adolescence we learn vitally important skills, such as how to leave home and enter the larger world, how to connect deeply with others and how to safely experiment and take risks. These skills create positive strategies for dealing with adult problems. If we don’t learn these skills during those twelve adolescent years, we will find ourselves ill-equipped to create a successful adulthood. The author draws on important new research in the field of neurobiology, showing how our thoughts and experiences actually change the physical brain. This easy-to-read work shows that understanding how the brain functions can improve the lives of adolescents, making their relationships more fulfilling and also less lonely and distressing on both sides of the generational divide. This is sort of a road map for understanding the adolescent mind and should help families not just survive but also thrive through the teenage years and beyond. People tend to believe the brain stops growing after childhood. Nothing could be further from the truth. The brain continues to grow and change throughout adulthood, depending on the thoughts we think and the things we focus on. The word for this

Visit www.HBmag.com

28

new finding is neuroplasticity. Both physicists and biologists are fascinated with the fact the brain actually changes physically because of what we think about and what we experience. The author feels what adolescents have going for them is actually what adults need in order to maintain vitality in their lives right now. He explains why the four features of adolescence are exactly what we need to not only live a vital life as teens, but also to keep our brains growing throughout our lives. These four features are the “essence” of the brain changes during adolescence: Emotional Spark – Social Engagement – Novelty – Creative Explorations. Adol-ESSENCE. Or as Siegel explains, Adolescence is Adult-ESSENCE. There are four Mindsight sections in the book, chapters where teens or adults can explore practical ways to strengthen the mind, make your brain more flexible and resilient and improve your relationships. Mindsight is the ability to truly “see” or know the mind. Mindsight includes three fundamental skills: Insight, Empathy and Integration. Siegel explains these in an easy-to-understand way. Mindsight includes short exercises, each with a specific purpose. For instance, every person has feelings, thoughts and memories. But having Mindsight empowers us to have a picture, a map of the mind so that we can use those feelings, thoughts and memories in new and helpful ways. Mindsight enables us to go beyond “being sad” or “being angry” and to recognize that we have those feelings of sadness or anger but to realize that they are not who we are. We learn to accept them for what they are and allow them to transform so they do not lead to depression or rage. The sections in this book include “The Essence of Adolescence,” “Your Brain,” “Your Attachments” and “Staying Present Through Changes and Challenges.” Daniel Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at UCLA, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center and the director of the Mindsight Institute. He is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and is the co-author of Parenting from the Inside Out, The Whole-Brain Child and Mindsight. If you have teenagers, or if you are a teenager, this work will help you understand how the changes in the brain during those years can become a positive thing rather than the challenge we expect them to be. You can purchase these books online or from your local bookstore.

HERBS&SPICES

Self-Heal Written By Alison Prater

J

ust as the name implies, self-heal has a long history as an essential herb for first aid use. Also known as prunella vulgaris, it is a member of the mint family. Unlike other members of the mint family, self-heal does not have a strong aroma or flavor. It is edible, however, and mostly used for medicinal purposes.

Self-heal can be started from seeds, or you can acquire seedlings to transplant. Lightly cover seeds with soil and keep in mind they may take as long as a month or two to germinate at 55° to 65°F. Established plants self-sow prolifically and also spread by putting down roots at nodes on the stem. Pruning the plants will make them more compact. Flowers appear in midsummer and continue for several weeks or longer.

Self-heal is a perennial herb, mostly native to the Northern hemisphere, throughout Europe, Asia and North Africa. It has creeping stems that root along the ground, becoming a ground cover over time. It has small oval shaped leaves, and deep purple flowers that bloom atop a vertical stem. Self-heal has a square stem, as do most members of the mint family.

The tender young leaves are sometimes taken as a spring tonic. The aerial parts are astringent and antiseptic, and may reduce blood pressure. According to the Doctrine of Signatures, they are said to resemble the throat and the larynx, and are often used to treat issues such as sore throat. In Chinese Medicine, self-heal is considered an antiseptic, cooling herb. It is used as a tonic and to treat fevers, liver and kidney disorders. It is used to stimulate the liver and gallbladder, and to treat symptoms associated with an unbalanced liver, such as hypertension and conjunctivitis.

Self-heal grows so easily, some gardeners consider it a weed. It is likely to overrun an herb bed unless contained in a container, or ruthlessly cut back each year. Its purple flowers make for an attractive ground cover, if you have a spot in your garden where you don’t mind letting it run wild.

CRYSTOLOGY

T

Amethyst the All-Healer Written By Alison Prater

he name Amethyst derives from the Greek word ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated,” and comes from an ancient legend. Bacchus, the god of wine, angry over an insult, decreed the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. This happened to be a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to worship at the shrine of Diana. She sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.

Amethyst is a receptive stone, associated with the planets of Jupiter and Venus. Amethyst is a variety of Quartz found in many locations around the world, and forms as transparent, terminated crystals of all sizes in geodes, clusters and as long, single terminations. The presence of manganese in clear Quartz produces Amethyst, while additional amounts of iron vary the purple coloration. Amethyst ranges in hue from pale red-violet to deep violet, and may be transparent or opaque. Amethyst has been highly prized throughout the ages for both

its beauty, and its healing properties. It is a semi-precious stone in today’s classifications, but it was considered precious by many ancient cultures. It is a unique stone in that it carries the energies of fire, passion, creativity and spirituality, yet bears the logic of temperance and sobriety.

Throughout history, the special virtue of Amethyst has been that of preventing drunkenness and overindulgence, not only for inebriation but in over-zealousness of passion. Amethyst was also reputed to control negative thoughts, increase intelligence and shrewdness in business matters. This stone has a long history of being carried by travelers for protection. Its inherent high frequency purifies the aura of any negative energy or attachments, and creates a protective shield of Light around the body. Amethyst stimulates the Third Eye, Crown and Etheric Chakras enhancing cognitive perception, as well as accelerating the development of intuitive and psychic ability. Called the “All-healer,” Amethyst is one of the most effective crystals for healing people, plants and animals. Natural, unpolished Amethysts or geodes are particularly helpful when placed where plants will not grow. Amethyst protects against psychic attack, or other forms of threatening energy, and returns the energy back to the universe after being transformed into positive, loving energy. Referred to as “nature’s tranquilizer,” Amethyst calms and soothes, assisting the transmission of neural signals through the brain. It relieves obsessive compulsive disorder and hyperactivity in children and animals. It is especially effective for children’s recurring nightmares and fears of the dark. Placed under the pillow it protects against insomnia and nightmares. Amethyst is connected to the Temperance card in the tarot, representing balance. It is a stone dedicated to curbing overindulgence and bad habits, and is an excellent aid to quitting smoking, drinking and drug use, as well as unhealthy physical passion. As a luck and prosperity crystal, Amethyst is good for reducing the tendency to overspend, gambling addictions or unwise investments. It also provides the strength needed to obtain freedom from addictive personalities, one’s own or another’s.

Explore Your Spiritual Abilities

Placing an Amethyst on the navel is believed to protect a person from intoxication, and in conjunction with other treatments such as counseling, it helps cure addictions. A naval piercing makes it possible to always keep an Amethyst in this spot. Amethyst is an excellent stone for meditation since it vibrates at a frequency that aligns itself with the higher chakras. Placing this stone on an altar, or wearing this stone, enhances contemplative and devotional practices.

INGREDIENTWATCH

Proof is in

The Polish Written By Lissie Lyles

S

Dibutyl phthalate (aka DBP) is a plasticizer that reduces brittleness and cracking, improving the lasting power of nail polish. It is also referred to as just plain phthalates in other cosmetics. Either way, it’s linked to cancer in lab animals, and is linked to developmental and fertility concerns in humans, so it’s especially dangerous for pregnant women.

ummer is in full effect! Before you get that mani-pedi for your next beach trip, take a moment to educate yourself about safe nail care products. Chemicals in these products can be absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin, cuticle, and even the nail itself. Many popular name brand nail products contain some nasty ingredients that have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and a host of other problems. The big three to watch out for are: formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phthalate. Formaldehyde is not necessary to use, and if it is in your polish, seriously consider tossing it! This colorless, strong-smelling gas is not only used in embalming, it can also be found in common household items, including glue, plywood and adhesives. It is used as a preservative in nail polish. It is a proven carcinogen. On June 10, 2011, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services updated its National Toxicology Program Report on Carcinogens (RoC) to state that formaldehyde is “known to be a human carcinogen,” replacing the previous and more ambiguous “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.”

Toluene helps suspend paint throughout the bottle, which means you don’t have to shake it up very often. It is used to give many industrial liquids, such as gasoline and household paint, a smooth texture. Research shows that chronic and extensive exposure to this solvent can affect the central nervous system, and cause headaches, dizziness and fatigue, and possibly act as a reproductive and developmental toxin. Many products that refer to themselves as “3-free” are claiming to be free of these aforementioned baddies. There are also products that claim to be “4-free” because of the additional absence of formaldehyde resin, and “5-free” because of the absence of camphor. Though formaldehyde resin has been found to be less harmful, it is still an irritant and allergen

Employees of nail salons who are in contact with these products all day are especially at risk for health problems associated with these chemicals. By refusing to support toxic products we can help create healthier working conditions at salons. Nail polish company Zoya, which was tested in the study, was one of two brands whose claims of being “3 free” were substantiated by the study. This all-vegan polish was developed in 1992 by pianist turned cosmetologist, Zoya Reyzis, and her husband Michael, who had previously worked in the medical field, to be a healthier alternative nail polish. The study also determined that although the popular polish brand OPI didn’t label their products as “3-Free,” they were in fact devoid of these toxins.

for some, and many argue, why risk it? Camphor is often synthetically produced from turpentine oil, another harmful and toxic ingredient. Acetone is another ingredient to avoid altogether. Nail polish remover has been traditionally formulated using acetone or ethyl acetate solvent. These ingredients are flammable, harsh and drying to skin, and generate a lot of fumes, which can irritate the eyes, lungs and skin. There are plenty of removers that are acetone-free and contain less irritating solvents, including propylene carbonate, ethyl lactate (which comes from corn), methyl soyate (from soybean oil), and d-limonene (from oranges). No matter what you use to wipe away polish, minimize exposure by soaking a cotton pad thoroughly then pressing it onto nails for a few seconds before rubbing. This technique helps dissolve polish quickly. Always sit in a wellventilated room or go outside where there’s plenty of fresh air.

Honeybee Gardens and Aquarella are two nail polish brands that are water-based, rather than solvent-based, and have earned low-hazard ratings from the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database. This database is an excellent resource for further educating yourself about the safety of cosmetic ingredients.

References:

It is important to keep in mind that just because a product is labeled “natural,” does not mean that it necessarily free of toxic ingredients. “Natural” has become an ambiguous and meaningless marketing buzz word. Unfortunately, even some of the products claiming to be “3-free” have had their products tested to reveal alarming results. In 2012, Calif. state government study found that many of the “non-toxic” nail polishes contained carcinogens or developmental toxins.

1. ewg.org/skindeep/browse/nail+polish/ 2. organicgardening.com/living/toxic-trio-nontoxic-nailpolish?page=0,1 3. youbeauty.com/body-fitness/non-toxic-nail-polish-guide 4. cbsnews.com/news/concerned-advocates-companiesrespond-to-calif-toxic-nail-polish-report

Out of the 12 nail product brands the Department of Toxic Substance Control tested, all claiming they didn’t have one to three of the “toxic trio” of chemicals mentioned above, only two brands were able to stand by their claims. Some of the whole sample group of 25 brands contained as much as 17.7 percent of toxic materials!

Quinoa Salad with

Lime mousse Submitted By Marie-Claire Hermans – Ravishing Raw Summer means: salads! Most people still think salads are rather boring, but they are so much more than just green lettuce. By making a combination of all kinds of greens, herbs and wild edibles, you can create beautiful palettes of flavor, making a very interesting base for what you can add next: sprouts, fermented foods, raw dressings or vinegars, nuts and seeds, all the colors of the rainbow or all the tones of a few subtle colors. To feel more satisfied, yet (de)light(ed), add sprouted quinoa and this fluffy lime mousse of avocado…

SALAD FOR TWO Start with sprouting your quinoa •

Soak 2 C of raw organic quinoa overnight

Rinse well in the morning

Place them in a plastic sieve (metal oxidizes the sprouts)

Cover them up with a clean kitchen towel

Rinse them 2 to 3 times a day with water

Ready when they get a little “tail” in about 2 days!

Store in a sealed container in the fridge

Marie-Claire started “Ravishing Raw” after curing herself from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, with raw food. As a raw food coach, she specializes in offering professional help to those who are suffering from similar debilitating conditions. Along with her expertise in jazz music management and booking work, she helps world class artists – challenged by their demanding lifestyle – find solutions to improve their health.
