ran across this saying as I was going through a box of office papers. Obviously, I had written it down years ago while I was staying at The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas. I was attending an Integrative Health Conference at the time. I have no idea who wrote it, as I did not write down the author’s name, yet the message struck a heartfelt chord. As I read it now, some seven years later, I realize how important and how true this statement is to our emotional, intellectual, intuitive, physical, social and spiritual wellbeing.

he Mountain. With its majestic height and rugged beauty, it spans across the skyline, projecting an air of strength and protection. It carries much on its back, and provides for many. Though from a distance, it seems to thin and weaken at its highest peak, its broad and solid base lends solace to any towering summit.
“The greatest competition you will ever have is the competition between your disciplined and undisciplined mind. You must constantly study, understand and immense yourself in that which brings you value and power and avoid at all costs anything that weakens you.”
It is strong and solid, of earth. It is mighty; a guardian to its inhabitants. Yet, it calms with serene poetry, quieting the senses.
How true, where the mind goes the man follows. So, from time to time ask yourself, “where am I going and why am I going there?” Reflection is a good thing; it allows us to rethink our steps. What brings you value and confidence, and what weakens you?
“I am not ashamed to say that no man I ever met was my father’s equal, and I never loved any other man as much.”

It’s Garage Sale Season… Game ON!
Announcing an Amazing New Cancer Screening Test The name of it is the Oncoblot blood test. It is far and away the best screening tool to detect the presence of cancer long before any other test available today. It was developed by a husband and wife team at Perdue University in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. They discovered a specific protein that is only made by cancer cells and excreted into the blood. What’s more, this protein is organ specific. The bottom line is not only can this test detect cancer early enough to treat more effectively but it can tell which organ it is growing in. Now this test is available at the Reno Integrative Medical Center. To learn more or to schedule your test call: 775-8291009 or visit our website at www.renointegrative.com
Tips for making the most of your garage or yard sale: • Make sure you have plenty of folding tables and surfaces that are waist high for displaying items. • Labels for price tags. • Have calculators, pens, pencils and notepads for adding prices. • Chalkboards or poster boards to mark groups, I.e. “Books two for a $1”

Improve your diet!” Cancer patients, heart patients and diabetes patients are all being told to watch their diet, improve their diet, revise their diet and eat more fruits and vegetables!.
• Keep your money in a waist pack, apron with pockets or fanny pack. • Display clothes on a garment rack or clothesline. • If you are selling a lot of clothes, having a full length mirror makes it easy for shoppers.
Make the most of your gardening this summer, while learning to improve your nutrition through the consumption of fruits and vegetables: It will improve your health! Classes every 2nd and 4th Saturday. Call Pauline for time and location (775) 846-2192.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of wellbeing, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

Preparation Saves Lives A working smoke alarm is the best way of alerting residents to a fire. Smoke alarms save lives, families and firefighters. While the message is simple, statistics show that Americans need to pay more attention to not only installing, but maintaining the smoke alarms in their homes. A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as no smoke alarm at all. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2003-2006, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. The right equipment combined with simple maintenance, basic fire safety techniques, and a bit of organization can help make the difference when preventing a fire in your home. Prepare your home as if your life depends on it. IT DOES!
Be Wildfire aware!
E
very year nearly 3,500 Americans die in home fires and approximately 18,300 are injured. Children and the elderly are especially at risk in home fires because they are less able to escape when fire strikes. You can improve the chances that your family will survive a home fire by making sure that they can escape quickly if necessary.
AEROPONIC
Growing System:
Have a Plan
Avoid the unknown, grow your own
The primary fire safety strategy for any home is to warn the occupants early. The best way to get the earliest warning of danger is by installing enough smoke alarms. The other part of the home fire safety plan is for everyone to get out quickly. When you are awakened in the middle of the night to a fire, your thinking may be confused, so it is important that you practice your escape plan ahead of time. That way, your whole family will know what to do.

A Prayer of
Ho’oponopono
A
Written By Jack Elliott
s a life coach, from time to time, someone will reach out to me for coaching when they are about to lose a loved one. Perhaps relationships were strained, broken or non-existent. But, yet, there is an inner knowingness that some resolution is required. “How do I talk with them Jack, they’re about to die?” they ask. I often offer the prayer of Ho’oponopono.
I recently received word that a dear acquaintance friend, Chuck Frady, is about to make his transition (die) in the next day or two. This friend has blessed my life on far too many occasions for me to count. Iyanla Vanzant teaches that people come into our life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Chuck certainly was there for many of the pinnacle seasons of my life. I am so very grateful that he was there just at the right time, and for all the right reasons.
It is said that Ho’oponopono corrects, restores and maintains good relationships among friends, family members and with their gods or God by getting to the causes and sources of conflict, disappointment and pain. Usually the most senior member of the family conducts it. He or she gathers the family together. If the family is unable to work through a problem, they turn to a respected outsider. Many use a prescribe formula for communicating with one another.
In April of 2007, Chuck suffered a massive stroke. His last seven years have been a painful transition from this life to the next. As he transitions, I offered up my prayer of Ho’oponopono for, and to, Chuck. I believe that we are of one mind; united by an energetic connectivity that transcends space and time. In others words, I know I can say it here and Chuck will feel it there--wherever he may be as he transcends.
The formula has four distinct elements. “I love you.” This demonstrates that above all appearances of the contrary, I do love you. The second element is “I am sorry.” This demonstrates accountability in the discourse, whether one is responsible or not for the discourse. “Forgive me,” is the demonstration of atonement; to clean the slate of all errors and to restore the love. Finally, “Thank you” is the catalyst, born out of gratitude for the learning, forgiveness and cleansing that has transpired.

I love you Chuck. I so love your heartfelt willingness to go above and beyond for those you love. In fact, in my mind, you are the pure definition of love. You constantly came from a consciousness of giving. Lifespring, Terry Cole Whittaker Ministries, Tracy Performing Arts Foundation, Gateway Christian Church and even Heart and Soul Center of Light all were either transformed by, or born out of, your love. You have made a tremendous difference in the lives of so many people Chuck-Well done!

he commercial marketplace, like other spheres of our social and cultural life, provides a forum where ideas and information flourish. Some of the ideas and information are vital, some of slight worth. But the general rule is that the speaker and the audience, not the government, assess the value of the information presented. Thus, even a communication that does no more than propose a commercial transaction is entitled to the coverage of the First Amendment,” as written on the subject of commercial speak during Edenfield v. Fane. Showing an advertisement on television is a great way to promote any product directly to consumers in their own home, but why should medical advertising raise a red flag? Medical advertising could lead a patient to try diagnosing themselves, and misinforming other patients. This is because an advertisement could lead them to believe the product did more than it actually was able, or they compared their symptoms with that of the ad. Medical advertisements share the key elements in what a certain drug can do. Usually, they explain what ailments the drug relieves. Ads also suggest going to see a doctor if symptoms continue, or if you have a preexisting condition. Currently, only the United States and New Zealand allow medical advertisements to be shown on television. According to C. Lee Ventola, who wrote the article Direct-to-Consumer Pharmaceutical Advertising

Therapeutic or Toxic?, “The pharmaceutical industry and lobby groups have tried unsuccessfully to overturn bans against DTCPA in Canada and other countries or regions, such as in the European Union (EU).” These ads are referred to as DTC (direct to consumer). This form of advertisement is directed towards patients rather than doctors or health care specialists. The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for regulating the advertisements shown in the US. From the FDA draft and guidelines on Direct-to-Consumer Television Advertisements, there are six categories that the TV ad can be placed in. This shows what the sponsors have to go through, as well as what the ad needs in order to ensure public safety and wellbeing. Category 1 focuses on reviewing and commenting on the ads, this allows the company and the FDA to provide feedback for the statement the product is trying to get across. After identifying any problems, they can apply what they found to current and future ads. Category 2 and 3 ensure the ad is subject to a risk evaluation and a mitigation strategy, known as REMS. As stated in the draft, “FDA believes it is critically important that the risks associated with such products be appropriately communicated in all promotion, and intends to review all TV ads for such products to help ensure that this occurs.”

Category 4 is where the first ad for the drug is reviewed, following a safety labeling. This is mostly to make sure that any new product risks are communicated appropriately in the submitted ad and in future ads for the product. Category 5 is the process of a TV ad that violated regulations. This could mean it had misleading information. A new ad would be reviewed before being aired. Lastly, a category 6 ad is where the FDA notifies a company/sponsor whose ad for a product is reviewed by the pre-dissemination provision in the FD&C Act. A study conducted in 2013, by researchers Adrienne E. Faerber and David H. Kreling, for The Journal of General Internal Medicine, looked at medicine ads and how consumers interpret them. According to their findings, “Most claims were potentially misleading--6 in 10 claims left out important information, exaggerated information, provided opinions, or made meaningless associations with lifestyles.” New Zealand’s approach is somewhat different than the United States. New Zealand is allowed to show ads with pharmaceuticals because of The Medicines act of 1981. This act is followed by the Medicines Regulations from 1984. In New Zealand, medical advertisements must have the name of each active ingredient; it must have the appropriate quantitative particulars of each active ingredient; and a statement of the purpose for which the medicine is intended to be used. Ads are not allowed to be glamorized, leading a person to recklessly use the drug in question. According to the medical council of New Zealand’s statement on advertising, “Advertisements should not by implication, omission, ambiguity or exaggerated claim mislead or deceive or be likely to mislead or deceive consumers, abuse the trust of or exploit the lack of knowledge of consumers, exploit the superstitious or without justifiable reason play on fear.” Overall, advertisements in the United States seem to encourage usage of pharmaceutical drugs over simple over-the-counter medications, not to mention any other type of home remedy or lifestyle change. New Zealand’s regulations for medical advertising seem slightly stricter, and they have a specific council to monitor medical advertisements, however, like the US, they still push pharmaceuticals over numerous alternative ways of healing disease and general ailments.

Weight Loss (for those who truly cannot lose weight) Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.
Food. It’s not about the calories for the patient who can’t lose weight despite riding their bike 20 miles per day, while eating only 1600 calories in that same 24 hours. We’ve observed that in certain cases it’s about what foods they’re eating. If you’re eating according to the present day “food pyramid,” that’s your first problem. The base of the food pyramid is loaded with grains. Those of you who “can’t” lose weight, may be eating inflammatory foods; among which, the most prevalent are the grains, i.e. wheat, barley and rye. These are the gluten grains. If you find you are sensitive to these foods, just know that you may have a “leaky gut,” which leads to other food sensitivities (and also an inability to lose weight), as well as to other cross-sensitivities to non-gluten grains. If this is a problem for you, these sensitivities must be discovered and eliminated in order to lose weight.
L
ast month, we discussed that there are significant numbers of obese people who genuinely cannot lose weight, no matter what or how much they tried. Calorie intake (reduction) and exercise were not the answers. We discussed several of the potential metabolic and neurologic dysfunctional mechanisms in their bodies that could be contributing to their inability to lose weight, and also add to their frustration. Topics reviewed were Thyroid (misdiagnosed or mismanaged), stress, hypercortisolism, blood sugar, SIBO (look it up), and endotoximia. This month we will cover food, food allergies, hormones, aromatization, toxins, birth control pills and estrogen HRT and further impediments to weight loss.

Hormones. That’s the problem!? Yes and no. It is hormones, but not in the way many people think. If you are on birth control pills or hormones replacement therapy, there is a good chance you have excess estrogen in your system. When you have too much estrogen in your system, it cannot be easily cleared by the gall bladder (if you still have one) and the liver. Estrogen is then stored in your fat cells. When this occurs, the fat cells do not “let go” and “dissolve” until the estrogen in

The science is well documented and leads us to one unalterable conclusion for the person who cannot lose weight no matter what. out of your system (more about this below). More importantly, too much estrogen causes a person to not be able to convert inactive thyroid hormone (T4) to active thyroid hormonal (T3) by preventing T4 from getting to the liver or small intestines, where it’s converted and creates energy and the ability to mobilize fats from the system. People who have this phenomenon occur have the same symptoms as someone who has a true hypothyroid. The main symptom of this poor conversion mechanism is putting on excess weight that they can’t lose. Estrogen also suppress TSH and causes low thyroid symptoms and exacerbate Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. There are many other medications that can interfere with thyroid function. Some of the more popular ones are glucocorticoids, iodides, tamoxfin, anabolic steroids, furosimides, salicylates, phenobarbitols carbomazapines, ameraderoma and Beta-adrenergic antagonists drugs. If they alter T4 and T3 thyroid metabolism, you will not be able to lose weight.

Aromatization. If you are a female this term means that you suffer from insulin resistance (also loosely referred to as Syndrome X, metabolic syndrome or pre diabetes), and you change or aromatize your excess estrogen into testosterone. You may grow facial hair, gain weight, be fatigued or develop PCOS among the many other possible insulin resistant symptoms. If you are a male you may also suffer from pre diabetes, Syndrome X, metabolic syndrome and or insulin resistance and you will convert your testosterone into estrogen. Men get “man boobs,” among the many other above mentioned symptoms, and also cannot lose weight no matter how they try. Too much estrogen in men= inability to lose weight and

This clinical presentation is very common in men and women who cannot lose weight. Toxins. They can play a role in lack of ability to lose weight in two ways: • They can damage the pancreas and cause the above discussed insulin resistance, undiagnosed Diabetes Type II, or even type I diabetes.

• Or, they will store it in the fat cells (like excess estrogens), and the fat cells in question will not release to be dissolved with diet or exercise because the bodies innate intelligence understands that to do so would be to poison itself. Thus in both situations, the toxins need to be cleared to begin the weight loss process.

These are many of challenges to the patient unable to lose weight. There are more. The science is well documented and leads us to one unalterable conclusion for the person who cannot lose weight no matter what. Only a comprehensive history, exam and testing protocols that assess all of these factors at once and result in a treatment program that returns the patients physiology to homeostatic optimum function-better known as health--is the answer. Canned, one-size-fit-all plans are doomed to fail in virtually all of these cases. Hope this information helps and good luck!

The Pandan Man Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

Careful monitoring of men on testosterone therapy is important. Giving shots of testosterone can cause very high levels of testosterone in the body, which can then change into estrogen (female hormone), causing increased breast tissue, abdominal fat and prostate cancer risk. Drugs such as Arimidex, and herbs such as Berberine, need to be given to slow down the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. Testosterone prevents prostate cancer, but estrogen is the culprit in increasing prostate cancer.
ale Health
Although serious medical diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, prostate issues and cognitive decline face all of us, sexual health, libido and erectile dysfunction seem to capture popular attention. Proper Testosterone Replacement Is Safe Recently, the spate of TV ads denigrating testosterone replacement therapy has been misinterpreting scientific studies. The large study these ads refer to was one using veterans’ hospital data in elderly veterans after heart surgery, whose testosterone levels were replaced by low level hormones (lower than the normal hormonal level range). The study concluded that the patients’ levels were still low in testosterone. Another caveat: there were also 100 women included in the study.
Too much testosterone can also cause an increase in the number of red blood cells (polycythemia), which makes the blood sticky and more likely to cause heart attacks and strokes. Donating blood, which is almost always a good thing, is important for men with too much blood. Keeping an eye on the blood count, PSA (prostate test) and blood testosterone levels is the responsible way to monitor testosterone replacement therapy.
Low testosterone is related to bone loss, muscle loss, lower levels of Human Growth Hormone, increased inflammation, poor mood (grumpy old men) low sex drive, poor erectile performance and increased rates of coronary artery and heart disease, according to Harvard urology professor Abraham Morgentaler, MD.

Using a testosterone topical cream is a safer way for most men to replace this hormone. The cream used daily on the groin area and scrotum, with a little on the face to reduce lines and wrinkles, provides a more continuous, lower but effective dose of hormone replacement. There is some evidence that when there is sufficient testosterone replacement, a man should have morning erections.

YOU And The Energy Web T
he story of Jim Carrey and his use of the Energy Web in order to succeed at what he wanted is very enlightening. In the 1990s he was out of work, but he applied his thoughts, words and intentions in a very specific way to become the successful movie star he is today. He was barely making ends meet, but he set himself a very clear intention. He knew exactly what he wanted: to be a famous and successful actor known throughout the world, earning fabulous amounts of money. To symbolize this intent, he wrote himself a check for ten million dollars, and on the check he wrote “for acting services rendered.” He was hardly working at all at the time, but nonetheless he wrote the check, put it in his wallet and took it out to look at it every day. He would visualize his receiving ten million dollars, along with saying, “Everybody wants to work with me. I’m a very good actor. I have all kinds of movie offers.” He would repeat these words daily. Each thought and word has a very specific energy vibration. When we access the Energy Web with thoughts of what we desire, we call it visualization. When we use words, we call them affirmations. He was determined to do whatever was necessary to reach his goal so he also took action; he
diligently honed his skills in hundreds of small clubs around the US and Canada, trying out skits, perfecting his comic timing and instincts. He knew you have to do more than just think about success. You must act in meaningful ways, which helps attract the circumstances that make it happen. Five years later, with his career soaring, he received ten million dollars for starring in the movie Dumb and Dumber. Countless successful people have used the same techniques to achieve what they want regarding relationships, health, prosperity or career. Visualization, affirmations and taking action with determination seems to be the magic formula. However, most of us were not trained to do this, either at home or in school. We were told--and our senses experienced--that we exist as separate beings; separate from everything else. We also got the impression that things happen to us in a random way that we really have no control over. So, we have grown up believing that we must make things happen solely through physical action. However, modern physics is showing us the opposite: we are an intrinsic part of a massive Energy Web--that we are tiny holographic projections of an infinite holographic

universe. In other words, we have within us all the capabilities we need in order to access the opportunities and information we want and that we are connected to everything else; we are not separate, but part and parcel of that Web. Physicists now know that CONSCIOUSNESS AFFECTS AND DIRECTS ENERGY. Our consciousness actually directs the energy in the Web in order to bring to us the people, situations, and conditions that match our thoughts and beliefs. Every thought, every word, every intention, every attitude has its own specific vibrational frequency. And, we are affecting that vibrating Energy Web with our thoughts, ideas, beliefs and intentions every second that we are awake. Just like a spider web vibrates when anything touches it, the Energy Web is affected by our thoughts, beliefs and words, thereby giving us back what we vibrate, what we send out. We can think of the World Wide Web as an analogy, where everyone who has a computer is connected. Massive amounts of information are stored on the web. All we have to do is ask for it, or if we choose, we can add to that information. That’s what is going on every second of every day between you and the Energy Web. So, it behooves us to be clear and precise about what we want, to visualize it regularly, to state affirmations about it, and to take meaningful action in order to make it happen.

Dangers of
Psychological
Inflation John was excited by the opportunity, which would allow him a greater say in department decisions, a nice salary increase, and other perks. Upon starting at his new position, however, John’s personality began to change in subtle but significant ways. For example, he developed an air of superiority towards his peers. He became dismissive of their viewpoints, especially if they contradicted his own. His friends noticed him to be less playful and friendly. His sense of humor declined, particularly his ability to laugh at himself. John also began to exhibit a sense of entitlement. He gave himself permission to ignore some of the company rules, such as where employees could park, which he had always obeyed in the past.
I
n the story of King Midas, everything the king touches turns to gold. At first, this seems like a boon, for this power would make him the richest man in the country. But turning everything he touched to gold would eventually make the king the most spiritually and emotionally poor man there can be. How do you eat food turned into metal, find fragrance in a gold flower, or receive love from a statue? More importantly, how do you follow God if your heart is full of greed? This myth is about the dangers of psychological inflation. Psychological inflation occurs when an individual’s conscious identity (ego and the persona) becomes merged with an archetype (sub-personality) of the unconscious. That archetype could be the Self, or God, as was the case with King Midas, or any of a number of other “positive” archetypes such as the hero, sage, savior, healer, divine child, etc. People may also fall prey to an equally harmful negative archetype, such as the scapegoat, loser, failure, victim or pariah. These latter give rise to what is called a negative inflation. The following example will help to illustrate. John had recently taken a management position at the advertising firm where he worked. Although he had no previous management experience, the owner of the firm had taken a liking to him and felt he had a promising future.

As the months passed, John became more arrogant. He started thinking that he knew better than his far-more-experienced boss. His relationships with people became superficial and shallow. He did and said the right things, but seemed almost robotic as he did so. Every once in a while, he had the unpleasant sense that he was behaving in a phony and manipulative way towards others. He pushed these uncomfortable feelings aside by staying busy, drinking alcohol, and rationalizing to himself that he was really doing good, and that other people were just jealous of him. John was in the ever-tightening grip of a “positive” ego inflation. Yet, because he worked in a company whose management mistook arrogance and competitiveness for competence, he progressed up the company ladder. The higher he climbed, however, the more the quality of his relationships and overall wellbeing plummeted. His alcohol use became more intense and compulsive. His marriage was on the brink of divorce. His true friends stopped coming by and his new friends weren’t really friends but drinking buddies. As his life became more hollow, and his drinking got out of hand, John sank into a depression marked by moodiness and self-pity. The pendulum of his inflation had swung in the opposite direction. Instead of arrogance and an inflated view of his own abilities, he now imagined himself to be the worst husband and person alive. He indulged in a negative and overly critical self-appraisal. But his self-reproach and
22

self-condemnation were as extreme in their negativity as his exaggerated self-esteem had been in its positivity. His pity-party was made even more pathetic--and dangerous--by his alcohol abuse. “I’m an awful husband. I don’t deserve my wife. Hell, I don’t deserve my life.” These are some of the things he was now saying to himself and others. Efforts to help him look at himself with greater objectivity were met with stubborn resistance. It seemed that if he couldn’t be beyond reproach, he would swim in a pool of self-reproach. Two years after his promotion John entered an alcohol rehab center. The therapists there noted that although he appeared and thought himself miserable, there was an undercurrent of anger to his mood. They quickly noted that he resented looking at his arrogance and egocentricity. His self-criticism was so extreme, even he didn’t really believe it. In reality, his self-reproach had become a strategy of deception. It mimicked humility while actually serving to avoid an honest and direct look at his real attitudes of arrogance and phoniness.
Like Midas with his golden touch, this extreme form of egocentricity turns everything around you into an inanimate object. This is because you are seeking to control rather than to relate. You become increasingly manipulative, a persona cut-off from your soul. There is no genuine caring or love because an ego wedded to its persona loves only itself. It does not know, and cannot know, authentic human relationship. For more info, contact Dr. Andy Drymalski, Reno and Carson City psychologist at (775) 786-3818, or visit online at renocarsonpsychologist.com. Visit his blog at Jungstop.com. See ad on this page.
Fortunately, the therapists and other patients at the rehab center saw through John’s games. They called John on his grandiosity and crashed his pity-party. Through direct and ontarget confrontation, John’s egocentric defenses and strategies were dismantled. His power drive and controllingness were deconstructed, gradually returning him to a more grounded and authentic relationship to the world and other people. Humbled at depth, he began to feel more real and like himself again. John’s story illustrates many of the dynamics of psychological inflation. A positive inflation often results when the ego has been appointed a task that exceeds its current abilities or sense of self. Instead of receiving the task with objective humility, it employs a defense of inflated grandiosity. Rather than feel unworthy or overwhelmed, it assumes an attitude of arrogance and over-confidence. It becomes controlling as a way to avoid feeling impotent, vulnerable or insecure. When this happens, the personality is increasingly ruled by the power drive of the ego. Then, when life events poke holes in the ego’s inflated sense of self, deflated self-esteem often swing to the opposite pole of negative inflation. This is the “I’m worthless,” or “I can’t do anything right” standpoint. This orientation is not too different from a temper tantrum. Called on its arrogance, the ego tries to hide behind a false humility, or false contrition. Both positive and negative inflations are postures adopted by the ego to deflect a humbling truth or forestall an imperative for change. In alchemical terms, inflation is a defense against coagulatio, the process of coming down to earth and experiencing life’s constraints and your own limitations. Ultimately, positive inflation is a denial of your humanness in favor of an exaggerated superiority. Negative inflation, on the other hand, is a false or phony humility. In both cases the ego is exalting itself, latching onto extremes in order to avoid and defend against a far more real and painful truth. That truth is that you are human, incomplete and fallible. You have missed the mark, and it is time to make certain changes in your life.

10 Reasons not to circumcise your baby boy
9.) Foreskin is not a birth defect. It is a normal, sensitive, functional part of the body. In infant boys, the foreskin is attached to the head of the penis (glans) for a reason. It is designed to protect it from urine, feces and irritation, and to keep contaminants from entering the urinary tract. The foreskin also has an important role in sexual pleasure, due to its specialized, erogenous nerve endings and its natural gliding and lubricating functions. Removal of the foreskin drastically reduces the sensitivity and sexual pleasure your son will be able to experience as an adult.
T
here is a lot of misinformation out there designed to pressure parents into choosing to cut the genitals of their newborn sons. Many of the arguments in favor of circumcision imply that there are many health benefits to be gained from this procedure, and that risks are few. There is a lot of reason to reconsider whether this is really true. Below are ten reasons to choose not to circumcise your baby boy. (I’ve also included a video link in the references below to a discussion by Ryan McAllister Ph.D. called “Child Circumcision: An Elephant in the Hospital” that gives many compelling reasons to refuse circumcision.)
10 Reasons NOT to Circumcise Your Baby Boy 10.) There is no medical reason for “routine” circumcision of baby boys. No professional medical association in the United States or the rest of the world recommends routine neonatal circumcision. The American Medical Association calls it “non-therapeutic.” At no time in its 75 years has the American Academy of Pediatrics ever recommended infant circumcision.

4.) Most medically advanced nations do not circumcise baby boys. People in Europe, Asia and Latin America are often appalled to hear that American doctors and hospitals remove part of a boy’s penis shortly after birth. Approximately 75 percent of the men in the world are not circumcised and remain intact throughout their lives. 3.) Caring for and cleaning the foreskin is easy. A natural, intact penis requires no special care, beyond gentle washing while bathing. Later, when the foreskin can be retracted (something that can occur as early as age five, but often does not occur until adolescence), a boy can be taught to pull back his foreskin to wash his penis. Forcible retraction of the foreskin results in pain and injury, and should not be done. 2.) Circumcision does not prevent contracting or spreading HIV or other diseases. Over the years, claims that circumcision prevents various diseases have repeatedly been proven to be exaggerated or outright fabrications. Most men in the United States are circumcised, but our STD rates are as high as, or higher, than those in countries where circumcision is rare. The fact that certain parenting and health related publications continue to publish and support this myth is frankly despicable and dangerous.
8.) You wouldn’t circumcise your baby girl. In the United States, girls of all ages are protected by federal and state laws from forced genital surgery, whether practiced in medical or non-medical settings, and regardless of the religious or cultural preferences of their parents. There is no ethical rationale for distinguishing between female and male genital alteration. If it is wrong to remove part of a baby girl’s healthy genitals, then it is wrong to do the same to those of a baby boy.
1.) Children should have the right to be protected from permanent bodily alteration inflicted on them without their consent in the name of culture, religion, profit or parental preference. Most people would be horrified at the suggestion that a parent tattoo their three-day-old child, or engage in some other non-medically necessary form of body modification, such as the removal of earlobes. Under accepted bioethical principles, parents can consent to surgery on behalf of a child only if it is necessary to protect the child’s life or health. “Routine” circumcision fails this test because it painfully and permanently removes a normal and healthy part of a boy’s penis and does not protect the child’s life or health; in fact, it creates new risks.
7.) Your baby boy is not able to give his informed consent. Circumcision painfully and permanently alters a baby boy’s genitals, removing healthy, protective, functional tissue from the penis and exposing the child to unnecessary pain and medical risks--for no medical benefit. Your son is the one who will have to live with consequences of having his foreskin removed, he deserves respect enough to be old enough to consent to this procedure of his own free will and choice.
References:
6.) Removing part of a baby’s penis is painful, risky and harmful. Babies are extremely sensitive to pain. Many circumcisions are performed with no analgesic, but even when pain control is employed, the pain is not eliminated. As with any surgery, complications can and do occur with circumcision. These include infection, abnormal bleeding, removal of too much skin, loss of all or part of the glans, urinary problems, and even death. All circumcisions result in the loss of the foreskin and its functions, and leave a penile scar.
1. youtube.com/watch?v=Ceht-3xu84I 2. intactamerica.org/resources/decision 3. notjustskin.org
5.) Times and attitudes have changed. The circumcision rate in the United States is now below 40 percent (and much lower in some parts of the country), down from 81 percent in 1981. More than 60 percent of all baby boys in the U.S. leave the hospital intact, as more and more parents realize that circumcision is unnecessary and wrong.

KIDSCORNER
Happy Father’s Day!
“Kids Corner”
Written By Ariana Purcell
T
he month of June, for me, is all about Father’s Day. Whether you are going to be celebrating with your dad, or just calling him, make sure your father knows how great he is!
This Father’s Day, make sure to give your dad a little shout out to let him know how much you love him—especially if you can’t celebrate the day together!
I love spending time with my dad. Usually, I’m not with my dad on Father’s Day, so we have to celebrate it a little late, but it’s better late than never, right? Sometimes we go to a baseball game to see the Minnesota Twins play at their home stadium. I love going to baseball games. Even if I really don’t understand what’s going on in the game, I love letting my dad try to explain it to me. Another thing my dad and I like to do is going bowling. When I was little, I used to hate bowling. But now, I actually kind of love it! My dad takes the game a little too serious and gets way too competitive. But, instead of getting grumpy about it, I have fun with it; I learned to bowl against him! One Father’s Day, we went to Valley Fair, an amusement park in Minnesota. We rode roller coasters all day. It was probably one of the best Father’s Day ever! Having time with my dad is very special to me.
Have a great month, and Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

HERBS&SPICES
Damiana Written By Alison Prater
T
urnera diffusa, or damiana, is a flowering shrub native to the southernmost United States, Mexico, Central America and South America. A cousin of the passionflower, this small shrub produces small, yellow, aromatic flowers that blossom in the summer. They later become fruit, which tastes similar to figs. The shrub itself is said to have a spicy aroma, reminiscent of chamomile. Native people in Central and South America used the leaves of the plant as both a tea and an incense. Damiana was first recorded to be used as an aphrodisiac in the ancient Mayan civilization, but it has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine throughout the world. It not only possesses aphrodisiac actions, but also acts as an antidepressant, tonic, diuretic, cough-suppressant and mild laxative. It has been used in the treatment of such conditions as depression, anxiety, sexual inadequacy, debilitation, bed-wetting, menstrual irregularities, gastric ulcers, and constipation. In Mexico, the plant is used for asthma, bronchitis, neurosis, diabetes, dysentery, dyspepsia, headaches, paralysis, spermatorrhea, stomachache and syphilis. In Brazil, it is used to treat albuminuria (Kidney disease), alcoholism, anorexia, fertility problems, gallbladder disorders, kidney problems, malaria, nocturia, respiratory ailments, rheumatism, and urinary incontinence. In 1999, a group of researchers in Italy administered damiana to both sexually potent and sexually sluggish, or impotent rats. The extract had no effect on sexually potent rats but, in the others, it increased the percentage of rats that were sexually active. A 1998 in vitro clinical study reported that components in damiana bound to progesterone receptors in cultured human breast cancer cells, leading researchers to surmise that it had a neutral or anti-estrogenic activity. Damiana’s traditional use for diabetes has been studied by scientists as well. In 1984, Mexican researchers reported the hypoglycemic activity of the plant when a leaf infusion was
Visit www.HBmag.com
given to diabetic mice. This effect was re-verified in Mexico when the plant was prepared in the traditional manner (an infusion) and given orally to hyperglycemic rats. This study reported that damiana reduced blood glucose levels as well. A more recent study in 2002 however, reported that an ethanol extract of damiana evidenced no hypoglycemic activity. These conflicting studies suggest that the active “hypoglycemic” chemicals in damiana may be extracted in the traditional (hot water) process, and are lost, or not extracted, in alcohol. Many herbalists prefer to use damiana in combination with other medicinal plants; therefore, it can be found in quite a few herbal combination formulas for sexual potency, weight loss, depression, hormonal balancing and overall tonics. Most of the damiana sold in herbal commerce today originates from Mexican and Latin American cultivation projects. Damiana is contraindicated for pregnant women. Though generally considered safe, always consult with your care provider before working with any herbal treatments. Damiana is the main ingredient in a traditional Mexican Liqueur, which is sometimes used in lieu of Triple Sec in Margaritas. Mexican folklore claims that it was used in the “original” margarita. The damiana margarita is still popular today in the Los Cabos region of Mexico.

CRYSTOLOGY Written By Lissie Lyles
Sunstone S
unstone is a yang energy stone, just as moonstone is yin. It is associated with Ra, the Egyptian sun god. Sunstone is a member of the Feldspar family, and so named for its resemblance to the celestial body, with its warm shades of gold, orange, reds and browns. Inclusions of Goethite or Hematite refract light between the different crystal layers and produce an iridescent effect as the stone is viewed from various angles. Sunstone may be clear and transparent, or opaque. Sunstone is a joyful stone; a stone of leadership. It enhances personal power, freedom, and expanded consciousness. Sunstone reflects qualities of light, bringing in openness, benevolence and warmth. Its yang qualities support strength, mental clarity, and the ability to be of service to others. Sunstone is a powerful stone for attracting abundance. It is said to help encourage independence, originality and inspiration. It can sometimes help the wearer discover hidden talents. It is a crystal that has long been associated with good luck and is rumored to attract fame, unexpected prosperity and favorable conditions if worn during competition.

Sunstone increases vitality and is beneficial in starting, and maintaining, a fitness program, or in situations requiring high outputs of both physical and mental energy. This crystal strengthens resolve, will power, creativity and sexuality. Sunstone clears and cleanses all the chakras, but is especially beneficial for the root and sacral Chakras.

Sunstones with a predominantly red or brown hue activate the base, or root Chakra, located at the base of the spine. This is the Chakra that controls the energy for kinesthetic awareness and is the foundation of physical and spiritual energy for the

Sunstone is a joyful stone; a stone of leadership. Because sunstone carries yang energy, and balances with the yin of Moonstone, these stones are powerful when worn together. They help the wearer integrate god and goddess powers: outward assertiveness balanced with inner harmony. Worn as a ring on the receptive hand, Sunstone helps one receive what is needed. On the transmitting hand, it channels healing energy to others. Worn as a pendant, Sunstone brings the inspiration of the mind into alignment with the wisdom of the heart.
body. When out of balance, physical symptoms manifest themselves as lethargy, low enthusiasm, and a need for constant stimulation. Spiritual symptoms that this Chakra is out of balance include a feeling of disconnection from reality. When the Base Chakra is in balance, an individual experiences plenty of strength and stamina on a physical level, but also feel a sense of security about their place in the world. This encourages independence and spontaneous leadership. Sunstones that are mostly gold or orange in color identify with the sacral Chakra, also known as the second Chakra, located between the naval and the pubic bone at the front of the pelvis. It is the center of gravity and life force in the body, and controls the flow of information from the body to the mind and back again. The term, “Gut feelings” has to do with the fact that intuition, and other “non-linear” communication, flow from this chakra. When out of balance, symptoms will manifest as confusion, co-dependency, repression of emotions and intuition, fear of sensuality and sexual frustration. When it is in balance, the individual experiences grace, joy, and a flexible attitude that allows one to go with the flow.

Hardwiring happiness The new brain science of contentment, calm & confidence By Rick Hanson, PH.D. The author explains why our brains want to hang onto the negative things that have happened to us, like Velcro. And why the positive things seem to slip away like they were sliding on Teflon. The brain was programmed that way in order to help us survive through our thousands of years of evolution. Those parts of the brain are still doing that same job, remembering the negatives so you’ll be ready to fight or run if something like that happens again. The problem is, those old challenges (saber tooth tigers) aren’t around anymore. Our current challenges are relationships, money, unfulfilling jobs, health, etc., but the brain treats them the same--as if they were physical attackers. The author gives dozens of practical ways you can manage your mind to let go of those old habits of worry and anxiety, and instill habits of feeling good about yourself and your life.
T
his is an easy to understand book about how to rewire your brain for a more joyful, confident life. Rick Hanson is a neuropsychologist who understands that the experiences we have, and the thoughts we think every day, actually physically change the brain. Scientists call that branch of neuroscience Experience-Dependent Neuroplasticity. That’s just a big term meaning that our brains can change and are changing all the time. These discoveries have led to the understanding that we have a lot more power over our future than we ever imagined.
The ideas in this book work a type of practical magic. The many processes the author teaches makes it possible for you to rewire your brain for greater happiness, peace and wellbeing. Not only does he give you the science behind the processes he teaches, but he also relates stories of people who have used these methods to attain mindfulness, an inner peace and an attitude of contentment, confidence, calmness and resilience.
When the tiny connections in the brain move over to another position, that changes how easy or difficult it is to think positive or negative thoughts. The nature of those thoughts then change our mood, our attitude, our words and actions, literally everything we are motivated to do or not do. Most of us thought that our brain developed as we grew, turned out a certain way, and is now set in stone, with a certain level of intelligence and creativity, but that’s not the case. Our brains are changing all the time. Those billions of tiny connectors (neurons) which make up the brain don’t touch each other. An electrical charge, as well as certain chemicals, jump across a tiny space and make the connection, which completes the thought. The more often we think certain thoughts, the easier it is to continue to think those thoughts. They create a rut, so to speak, through repetition. Scientists explain this by saying, “Neurons that fire together, wire together.” But again, it’s not set in stone. It’s just a temporary connection. Is it hard to think something different, to open your mind to a new idea? Sure. You know that yourself. It’s kind of like trying to drive out of a deep mudhole rut when your tires want to continue down the same path. It takes effort. But the fact that we can and do change our minds, attitudes and beliefs many times during our lives, proves that we can do it. And we’ve also proven to ourselves that the brain then supports that new mindset, until we change it again.

INGREDIENTWATCH
PowderedElectrolytes Written By Lissie Lyles
I
n a previous Ingredient Watch column, we explored how “sports drinks” such as Gatorade, marketing themselves as being full of electrolytes to rehydrate the body, are really nothing more than a bunch of food coloring, corn syrup and artificial flavors. None of those ingredients are designed to do a body good. Today, we’ll be looking at some powdered electrolyte mixes, intended to be combined with water. Could these products offer healthier replenishment for athletes? Let’s look closer.
gain, muscle cramps, muscle strains and pulls, stomach upset, diarrhea, dizziness, high blood pressure, liver dysfunction, and kidney damage. Most studies have found no significant side effects at the doses used for up to 6 months. Rhabdomyolysis (breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue) and sudden kidney failure was reported in one case involving an athlete taking more than 10 grams daily of creatine for 6 weeks. People with kidney disease, high blood pressure or liver disease should not take creatine. It would be wise to consult with a care provider before using this supplement.
MESTRENGTH Ingredients: Calcium (as calcium magnesium lactate) 30mg, Phosphorus (as Dipotassium phosphate) 15mg, Magnesium (as calcium magnesium lactate) 15mg, Sodium (as sodium citrate, and sodium chloride) 60mg, Potassium (as Dipotassium phosphate) 30mg, Creatine Monohydrate 5g.
Alacer’s Electro Mix Ingredients: potassium, magnesium, calcium, manganese and chromium. Citric acid, malic acid, tapioca maltodextrin, and natural flavor.
Other Ingredients: Citric Acid, Natural Flavor, Vegetable and Fruit Juice (for color), and Stevia.
Pros: Short ingredient list, no sugar or artificial ingredients.
Cons: Not specified organic, and “natural flavors” are often still fairly processed chemicals.
Pros: No sugar or corn syrup. Short ingredient list.
Ultima Replenisher Ingredients: Magnesium citrate, Sodium Chloride, calcium citrate and calcium ascorbate, Amino Acid Chelate, Potassium phosphate, Copper citrate, Manganese citrate, Sodium Molybdate, Chromium dinicotianate lycinate, Silica,
Cons: Dipotassium phosphate can be hard on the Kidneys, as can Creatine. Creatine is a naturally occurring amino acid (protein building block) that’s found in meat and fish, and also made by the human body in the liver, kidneys and pancreas. It is converted into creatine phosphate, or phosphocreatine, and stored in the muscles, where it is used for energy. Though generally regarded as safe by the FDA, there are some side effects to consider when it comes to creatine. Side effects of creatine include weight

Raw Berry Cheese Cake

ven though truly raw cashews are difficult to find, this cheesecake is truly delicious and makes a healthy treat when you are transitioning from a standard diet to a raw food diet. If you are fully raw, replace the cashews with macadamia’s and make the portions smaller: these nuts have a higher fat content. Take and share this wonderful cheesecake to seduce and reduce the critics in your environment…

CHEESE CAKE • 3 C of soaked cashews • 1/2 C of fresh squeezed lemon juice • 1/4 C light agave nectar (if you want to use date paste, you can, but the color of the “cheese” cake won’t be as clear) • 1/8 tsp sea salt or Himalayan salt • 1/2 C to ¾ C coconut oil, melted • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract TOP • 3 different kinds of fresh berries to choice (if not available, frozen will do too) • edible flowers of the season (I found some wild pansies)

INSTRUCTIONS CRUST • Place the almonds in a food processor and pulse into a course flour • Add the dates and date paste and pulse until you create a sticky mass • Press it firmly into a spring form
Chicken Apple Wraps
Recipe by Dawn Gowery This is an easy, gluten free recipe and can be made vegetarian by cutting out the meat. You can any fruits or veggies you want for a different flavor or texture. It is fun to make and oh so healthy! Ingredients you will need:
INSTRUCTIONS CHEESE CAKE • Blend all the “cheese” ingredients (except for the coconut oil) until smooth • Add the coconut oil at low speed (if possible). Don’t blend longer than you need to • Pour the mixture into the spring form and spread evenly • Arrange the berries on top • Cover up and let sit overnight in the refrigerator • Next day, pick some edible flowers in your garden and make your cake look like a million • Share with friends and family
• 3 cooked and chunked chicken breasts • 3 Tbsp chopped apple • 2 Tbsp chopped grapes • 2 Tbsp natural peanut butter • 1 Tbsp Greek yogurt • 2 Tbsp honey (optional) • Romaine lettuce leaves (you can also use kale) Directions and suggestions: • Grill or pan steam chicken breast meat, after cooking, let cool.
TIPS • If you want fruit inside of your cake as well, stir some berries gently in by hand • Experiment with different kinds of fruit and have fun • A nice variation is replacing the nuts by avocado. In that case use 1/4 C more coconut oil • Leftovers stay well in the fridge for 3 days. If you used raspberries on top, check them for mold on the last day, remove and replace those with fresh ones.
• Chop chicken meat into small chunks. • Chop apple and grapes in small chunks. • Try to keep chunks of meat, apple and grapes the same size. • Mix all chopped ingredients in a bowl. • Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. • Spoon into lettuce leaf, roll and serve.
