ecember for many of us represents a festive time of the year. For many families this last year brought about devastating economic changes. Depending upon how you choose to look at the part you play in every situation will determine a positive or negative outcome. Change, what does that really mean? Unless we know specifically how to change a situation or a behavior that no longer serves us, can change for the sake of change be effective? Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is to some the definition of insanity. So as I reflect on my past year, I’ll use this month to streamline and eliminate processes that no longer serve the magazine as a whole. Reflection is a necessary piece in positive growth. Starting the New Year with a clean slate is invigorating and exciting and sets the stage for wonderful things to come. In this issue, Andy Drymalski writes about “Winter Blues” and the inevitable let down after the busy holiday season, and June Milligan walks us through how to cope when we are “Overwhelmed”, apropos for those juggling “extra balls” for the holidays. Those that have vegetarian guests for the holidays may want to check out a variety of meatless turkey products reviewed in our Ingredient Watch Department. There are a plethora of articles this month: Making Holiday Crafts, Benefits of Infrared Saunas, Cancer therapy, Neural Mobilization, Chronic Pain and tasty holiday recipes. here are over 100 species of pine throughout the world. It is one of the most commercially sought after trees, wanted for its timber and wood pulp. It is a relatively “softer” wood; however, when grown on a plantation, it can grow to become a more dense and durable timber. In general, pine is quite versatile; often used in carpentry items like flooring, window frames and higher end furniture. For those who seek furniture that is well suited for casual settings, “knotty” pine fits the bill for cabins or wintry resorts. Pine is also popular for ornamental décor; from planting a variety of pine trees in your park or yard, to adding small sprigs of pine branches in a bouquet of flowers, pine adds a unique touch. The scent alone makes it popular in air fresheners and cleaning products, emitting an aroma that most people associate with “clean.” Some pine trees produce pine nuts, which are often used in cooking. They add a nutty, yet distinctive flavor to the dish. Pine cones are very popular among crafters, used in a variety of projects. Some people use the inner bark of pine as a thickening agent in soups and stews. You can also steep the pine needles, creating a unique tea. Beyond its basic qualities, pine trees become a hot commodity during a particular time of year in America. During the Christmas holiday season, pine tree farms and parking lots flourish with pre-cut or cut-your-own Christmas trees. Some people view the process of acquiring a Christmas tree as a holiday tradition in itself. However, decorating this hearty, fresh smelling tree with lights, bulbs and tinsel, is likely the most treasured aspect of this holiday tradition for all. HB

Dr. Kwong prefers not to drill or extract a tooth if it is truly not warranted. He is also choosy when it comes to the labs and materials he uses. For example, if a patient needs a crown, Dr. Kwong goes above and beyond to make sure that the crown shade is a perfect match, by sending the patient directly to the lab he uses. That helps alleviate any issues during the

procedure and it takes the worry away from the patient. Kwong Dental also promotes the natural process of re-mineralization, “where calcium and phosphates are absorbed by the tooth and used to strengthen damaged tooth structure,” he said. This all adds to the stress-free environment, which Dr. Kwong provides. N o w that he has his own practice, he is able to spend more quality time with his patients and it gives him the freedom to explore the kinds of methods and procedures that work best for his patients, and their well-being. When he first got out of school, Dr. Kwong started working in private offices in California, but found that many of them were ethically questionable in their practices. He started working for Western Dental and fell into a position where he only performed extractions. Then, he was promoted into a managing dentist role and relocated to Sparks. This is where he gained experience in operating a business, as he ran the office. He also built connections with other local dentists, labs and patrons within the Reno/Sparks area. From playing violin, Valedictorian of his high school, to finishing his undergraduate and dental schooling in just six years; Dr. Cyrus Kwong offers the same dedication in his dental care to his patients. “I love working with people and helping [them],” he stated. ine tasting, what does this phrase actually mean? For those just beginning to appreciate wine, it can strike fear in the heart, conjuring mental images of socalled wine experts engaged in the contemplative ritual of swirling, sniffing, swishing and spitting. They bear concerned expressions, pursed lips and furrowed brows while exchanging obscure technical terms that easily sound like gibberish to the uninitiated. This is the cliché image and although-like most clichés, not inaccurate-it is important to remember that it’s not really representative of wine tasting in its most basic and helpful definition. Wine tasting is quite simply the tasting of wine. As you start down the path of sampling new wines, keeping this tenet in mind will be helpful in your efforts to discover what you like or dislike. Understanding what draws you into a wine or what puts you off allows you to shop for wine with more confidence. Tasting wine is really no different than tasting any other food or drink. You taste it, appreciating its aromas, flavors, textures, perhaps noting some nuances, and then decide if you like it or not. Maybe this seems obvious but I think it bears emphasizing as the basic pleasure of tasting new things can be obscured in the sometimes unnecessarily complex world of wine. Think of it this way: Are you filled with dread or self-doubt when you try a new brand or roast of coffee? Do you feel intimidated when you open an unfamiliar chocolate bar? Is it scary to try Spanish olive oil instead of Italian? Of course not and one need not be nervous when tasting wines either. Just pay attention. For example, ask yourself: Is it sweeter than you’re used to? Is it bitter? Is it heavier or lighter? Does it stimulate your interest, making you go back for a second pass? Or does it leave you cold? The same principles that one perhaps unconsciously employs when trying, say, new potato chips also apply to wine. Do however be aware that wine can sometimes be quite subtle- but still waters can run deep. As I have alluded, tasting wine doesn’t need to be a big production, but it’s best to use some basic guidelines to enhance your tasting experience and aid you in remembering what it is that you like, what you don’t and why. For this reason it is a good idea to take a few notes. They don’t have to be lengthy or florid; jot down your initial Continued on Page 9. December 2010

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. From Page 8, The Basics of Tasting Wine thoughts- just enough to jog your memory later. The most helpful tasting notes tend to be your first impressions. Don’t over-think it. It is best to taste wine in a quiet atmosphere where one is able to focus a little. Adequate light is important so you may accurately observe the color of the wine. Ideally it shouldn’t be too cold or too hot in the room as both extremes can have a negative effect on the wine itself as well as the taster’s ability to discern flavors and aromas. It’s helpful to have a bit of plain bread or crackers on hand, to cleanse the palate of any lingering toothpaste taste or if you had a spicy lunch so you start with a blank slate, so to speak. Some people prefer to taste wine in groups, exchanging feedback. Others prefer tasting alone where they can better concentrate. Some experts assert that your palate is most attuned early in the morning. I personally feel you should taste wine when you feel like drinking wine, but not too late in the evening or when you are tired or not feeling well. Next are the basic steps: The maxim “swirl, sniff, sip, swish, savor, and spit” really applies and is easy to remember. First, swirl the wine in the glass to release the aromatics. Then, take a deep sniff and a few shorter sniffs to appreciate the bouquet of the wine. Now take a sip and swish it around in your mouth, allowing the wine to coat every area of your tongue. Take your time here to savor the flavors, allowing your olfactory system to really engage. The “spit” part may be too difficult for some and that’s fine, in which case now swallow the wine. After all, this should be fun. But keep in mind the advice to spit helps you remain alert and your palate stays fresh a little longer. You can still get the information you need about the wine even when spitting it out. Granted, spitting is a skill in itself which may be reason enough to skip it for now, but for those who are interested, simply spit into the provided spit vessel, not by propelling it as you might normally, but by pursing your lips together and just allowing the wine to ‘drop’ into the vessel. Now comes the best part, the wine’s finish. A long, lingering finish is one of the great pleasures of drinking wine, and now is the time when one can find if it’s there and relish it. With Christmas, Chanukah, and New Year’s Eve coming
up, there is an ideal opportunity to try tasting and shopping for wine to pair with your holiday meals. This is a fun place to start because holiday meals tend to be more informal and family oriented, where any perceived “pressure” to provide the “correct” wine may be largely absent. Here are some very general ideas to get you started: Dry or off-dry (meaning ever so slightly sweet) Riesling, Gewürztraminer, or Pinot Gris pairs well with turkey, classic stuffing, sweet potatoes, latkes with sour cream and applesauce, Yorkshire pudding and ham. For red wine drinkers Pinot Noir is good with turkey- particularly leaner-breasted heritage turkeys- and wild mushroom stuffing. Zinfandel pairs well with turkey cooked on the grill and highly seasoned sausage stuffing. Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot is ideal if you’re having roast beef or brisket. And sparkling wine or Champagne is a natural for New Year’s Eve celebrations and pairs well with many foods, especially hors d’oeuvres. Happy wine tasting and happy holidays! Nutmeg is featured in Middle Eastern, Greek, Dutch and Japanese cuisine as well. Nutmeg’s history is a somewhat tragic one. Because the Nutmeg tree could only be found on the Banda Islands, Nutmeg was once extremely expensive. It has been said that in England, several hundred years ago, a few nutmegs could be sold for enough money to enable financial independence for life. Spice traders did their best to keep the location of the islands a secret, but they were eventually discovered by Portuguese conquerors in 1512. The trade of nutmeg later became dominated by the Dutch in the 17th century. The British and Dutch engaged in prolonged struggles to gain control of the islands. The Dutch managed to establish control, after an extended military campaign that culminated in the 1612 massacre of most of the islands’ inhabitants. Thereafter, the islands were run as a series of plantation estates, with the Dutch mounting annual expeditions in local war-vessels to extirpate nutmeg trees planted elsewhere. During the Napoleonic Wars, the English took temporary control of the Banda Islands from the Dutch and transplanted nutmeg trees to their own colonial holdings elsewhere, notably Zanzibar and Grenada. The national flag of Grenada, adopted in 1974, shows a stylized split-open nutmeg fruit. Today Indonesia and Grenada dominate production and exports of nutmeg. Other producers include India, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka and Caribbean Islands such as St. Vincent. Nutmeg increases the intoxicating and soporific effects of alcoholic drinks, and is claimed to have aphrodisiac properties. It has been used medicinally to treat digestive troubles. The oil is used in perfumes, soaps and other cosmetic products. And of course, Nutmeg is found in many favorite holiday dishes such as pumpkin pie, apple cider and eggnog. Written By Shelby Molchan As the year end holidays approach, our thoughts turn, among other things, to food. The holidays are a time when most people tend to, or even “plan” to overeat. The phrase “I’m stuffed,” takes on new meaning when we consider that the average American can be storing up to 15 pounds of decaying fecal matter in their bowels. People who practice eating a healthy diet throughout the year, one that consists of plenty of raw foods, avoiding over consumption of sugar, wheat and hard to digest proteins, tend to have an efficient digestive tract. When these folks overeat, the body tells them right away that they’ve made a mistake, and they usually listen. People who have poorly functioning digestive tracts, and regularly overeat, tend to already suffer from acid reflux, constipation, bloat and gas; so, they are not as aware that overeating is the cause of many of their problems. Some triggers include boredom, feeling deprived of foods one enjoys, body image issues, glucose intolerance, habit, lack of energy, lack of willpower, feelings of hurt, upset or being overwhelmed and using food to replace the need for love or comfort. Drycleaners who use this process are called “Wetcleaners.” Wet cleaning uses water to clean all “dry clean only” labeled garments with no shrinkage, such as wool suits, silks, cashmeres and rayon in special washers and humidity controlled dryers with EPA approved detergents and conditioners. Water naturally takes out all the stains that perc and petroleum cannot. A fresher, cleaner garment is produced.

he term “Green” has been thrown around a lot in the recent years. And, we the consumers are becoming desensitized and indifferent to products claiming to be “green.” We hear “green” and our eyes glaze over. What does “green” mean? We know that it has something to do with being natural and it is good for us or the environment. But, as we examine many products or services that use “green, ecosafe, eco-preferred or natural,” it is increasingly clear that it is merely a finely crafted marketing campaign. This process is “greenwashing”.
Ask your drycleaner what makes them “green”? Find out what solvent they use. Do they recycle hangers? Maybe they use biodegradable garment covers or recycled poly? Or, are they taking steps to save energy? Of course, you can determine what “green” means to you. For many, a little perc or petroleum in their clothing, comforters and other household items is but a mere nuisance. For others, not allowing those chemicals into the home is the practice in which they want to live; they should choose the wet cleaning process. HB
Of course there are products and services that are “greener” or even truly “green.” Let’s take dry cleaning as an example. Everyone knows that the dry cleaning industry uses a toxic solvent called Perchloroethylene (perc) as the industry standard for cleaning clothes. It is classified as a probable carcinogen by the EPA and its use is being phased out in California by 2023. Some drycleaners then switched to petroleum or hydrocarbon (DF-2000 or Ecosolv) because it is less toxic than perc. It is less aggressive than perc, but it is flammable and the drycleaners can use the term “green” in their marketing. But, is it really green? Is cleaning your clothes in what is essentially kerosene a natural and toxic free method? Does washing in either perc or petroleum produce a cleaner garment? The answer is no. Both solvents are very good degreasing agents and are decent at removing some dirt with proper detergents, but stains such as food, drinks, sweat, urine and many other naturally occurring stains will not budge in perc or petroleum.

Neural Mobilization
When “working on your nerves” is a good thing.

N
erves are the connection between our brain, spinal cord and everything else in the body. They allow us to have sensation, such as touch and taste, and they control things like your heartbeat, liver function and hormone production (without you even having to think about it) 24 hours a day. Nerves are also susceptible to injury, just as everything else in our body. Most us of know the term “funny bone.” Not only is it not funny, but it is also not a bone. It is actually a nerve; the Ulnar nerve. It travels from the tips of the ring and pinky fingers up the arm to the inside of the elbow over that bony prominence (corner finder), up through the arm pit and under the collar bone, and becomes part of the Brachial Plexus; which connects to the cervical spine at C-4 to T-1 in the neck. The Brachial Plexus is a grouping of nerves, including the Radial and Median nerves, both of which also travel to the hand. A common injury for these nerves is called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. If you are a bicycle or motorcycle rider, you may have experienced this when your arms fall asleep or go numb during a ride. Nerves can become impinged between the vertebrae, but more commonly the nerve will get stuck within the fascia of the body because 50 percent to 90 percent of the nerve body is covered by fascia. With repetitive movements, injury or even a lack of movement and stretching, the nerve will get stuck or glued. You may notice a tight neck or “pinched” nerve feeling after lying in bed while sick. Nerves need to be able to slide and glide through their pathway. When tension is put upon a stuck or compressed nerve (i.e. carpel tunnel syndrome), blood flow to the nerve is slowed or stopped which can cause pain, loss of sensation, numbness, weakness and atrophy of surrounding muscles if it goes on long enough. Neural Mobilization can help free the restricted nerve and bring blood supply back to the affected area. With the use of very

light finger pressure, the nerves are freed from the surrounding tissues, it softens, and the pain sequence is stopped. Tension through the entire nerve is also released, which frees the associated vertebra or joint. So in cases such as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, the impinged brachial plexus can cause the neck to be out of alignment because of the pull on the nerves. When the nerves are freed, the neck is easier to align. More manual therapy, such as Rolfing®, may be indicated to further the balance in the whole body and educate the client so the impingement is not likely to happen again. HB

bout 10 percent of women in the United States have never had an orgasm, either with a partner or during masturbation. Even women who have had an orgasm have some difficulty - about 25 percent reported having problems with orgasm within the last year. It is not that these women cannot have an orgasm; it is due to the fact that they have not learned to do so. One major survey found that 62 percent of women were almost 18 years old or older when they first experienced orgasm. There are many reasons why a woman may have difficulty having an orgasm, such as negative messages about sex and body image, a sexually repressive upbringing, fear of intimacy, lack of trust with their partner(s), and most importantly, lack of education about their vulva. Yes, vulva, not vagina. The vagina is a canal which extends into the body, whereas the vulva encompasses all external genitals (labia majora, labia minora, urinary and vaginal openings and the clitoris). Most women receive negative messages about these sexual parts of their bodies. Their vulvas are referred to as “privates” or “down there,” which are not to be touched, or enjoyed. Many women still need permission to feel sexual pleasure and learn how to be empowered about their sexuality. It is imperative that a woman takes responsibility for learning about her body and asking for or teaching her partner what she needs in order to reach orgasm. The best way to learn how to have an orgasm is to get in touch with the vulva. Especially the clitoris: its only purpose is for sexual pleasure and arousal. More women experience orgasm through masturbation, manual stimulation by a partner, and oral sex than women who experience it during intercourse. During intercourse, a woman may need to have simultaneous clitoral stimulation to achieve orgasm. For most women, orgasm results from a constant circular motion around the clitoris. Once a woman’s orgasm begins, the orgasm will end if the stimulation is removed. Some women are capable of experiencing orgasm, and even ejaculation, when an area December 2010

At the same time, vary your daily routine. If you’ve wondered why you get tired after doing the same thing all day, it’s because your body needs a mixture of mental and physical tasks. When paperwork or thinking exhausts you, take a break and do something physical. Don’t bore yourself into a state of overwhelm. Find things to laugh about. When you laugh, or even smile, the muscles of your face send a message to your brain that tells it all is well. The brain then causes the body to release certain pain-killing or feel-good chemicals and hormones, the opposite of being overwhelmed. Learn to say no. Turning down a request may give you a feeling of guilt. Remember, guilt is a learned emotion, and the learned feeling of guilt makes saying no almost impossible to do. But you’ll have to do it occasionally or you’ll find yourself always on the run for someone else, and becoming overwhelmed. Do one thing at a time, no matter how proud you are of multi-tasking, and do it well. Our conscious minds can only handle a few things at a time without causing stress, which adds up to the feeling of being overwhelmed. Take care of problems and tasks immediDecember 2010

For people who want to focus on the negative and repeat the same problem over and over, refuse to engage in that habit. Otherwise you’ll drag yourself down and become overwhelmed. Simplify. I am in 7th grade, and one thing I dislike about 7th grade, is the drama! Girl drama is big in this grade; I’m telling you with experience. Drama can ruin friendships and make people feel embarrassed or hurt. My advice is to just ignore it and don’t let anything get to you, or in between your friendships. Because nobody wants to lose a friend over a rumor, lies or drama! But here are some things to de-stress yourself after a day filled with drama: 1. Take a nice bubble bath to calm yourself down. 2. Turn on your music, blast it through your bedroom and dance your worries away. 3. Watch a romantic-comedy; there is nothing like a night filled with fun, topped off with popcorn. 4. Get lost in a good book; for me, this works the best! I get so lost in a good book that I forget about the real world and what’s happening around me. 5. Talk to a friend and let your words pour out of your mouth, it’s good to get it out! 6. Talk to your mom. I know this might sound weird, but she might have some helpful advice. She probably went through it in middle school too. All of these procedures work for me, and I hope they will work for you too. I also hope my advice helps as well! HB

he first thing I noticed about this book was the adorable child on the cover. Her little chef hat, red and white checked apron and her little chubby baby fingers holding a beautiful green bell pepper. The look of this book reminded me of a cross between a Pottery Barn ad and a Real Simple magazine. I thought, bravo on the marketing. It is definitely appealing to the eye. The Baby Cuisine Cookbook is comprised of “Internationally inspired organic recipes for babies from six to eighteen months,” according to its cover. At first glance, you are able to discern several things. One, it is a cookbook; two, it is for babies and, three, the author has partnered with a naturopathic doctor, regarding the recipes and findings contained in this work. All of this information, along with its aesthetic features, is what drives the potential purchaser to press on. As I opened the cookbook, I discovered the little treasures within. This was actually something I would have enjoyed using when my children were babies. The first section of the book, entitled “Dr. Tamara Cullen’s Baby Food Basics,” covers topics like “Teaching healthy eating habits” and “Children with allergies.” It truly covers the basics of food, regarding babies and their relationship with food. Dr. Cullen delves into subjects like food sensitivities, special diets, proteins, vegetarianism and storing and reheating baby food; all of which relate to children. The recipes follow: page after page of clean photos; all with instructions on how to prepare yummy dishes from around the world. It even breaks down into specific recipes for specific age groups. Not to mention, all of the recipes are Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free or Dairy-Free; or, a combination of all. Each recipe possesses a “stamp of approval,” from the cookbook-inspiring-baby herself. However, fear not, these recipes are not just for babies. They are for the entire family to share and enjoy. Check it out for yourself…the signature dish: Chicken Parmesan.

1/3 cup orzo pasta 4 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breast 1/8 cup onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tbsp Olive oil 1 ¼ cup tomato sauce 1 tsp fresh oregano
1 tsp fresh basil 1/8 tsp salt and ground pepper 1 tbsp grated parmesan ¼ cup low moisture mozzarella, grated

Cook pasta according to instructions on box. Pasta should be soft, not firm. Reserve pasta water for pureeing. Cut chicken breast into ¼ in strips, then cut in half to ensure even cooking. Sauté onion and garlic in olive oil on medium heat until the onions are translucent, about two to three minutes. Add tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt and pepper. Simmer on medium/low heat for four to five minutes. Add chicken breast and increase heat to medium. Simmer for five to six minutes until the chicken is cooked. Remove from heat and stir in cooked orzo, parmesan and mozzarella. For younger babies, puree with hand blender or in food processor, fitted with steel blade. Use reserved pasta water, ¼ cup at a time, to achieve desired consistency. Freeze pureed mixture in ice cube trays for up to 2 months. Or store in the refrigerator for up to three days. The recipe makes two cups.

Beyond the scrumptious recipes and kitschy allure, the ideals behind this book captivated me during its introduction. I was hooked from the get-go as the author proclaims, “That means more quality time together at the kitchen table, which I believe is one of the best ways to give your little one a healthy, happy start to life.” I could not agree more. It was obvious that this proud papa wanted to share his love of food and life with his baby. It just happened to inspire a cookbook that he could share with others, while offering his daughter a delectable journey into the world of food. o you have a bad back, and it’s not going away. Or you have had neck and low back pain problems for years, you’ve tried everything, and you’re getting worse. What gives? Welcome to the utterly confusing world of neck, back and spinal problems. There are many resources like chiropractic care, acupuncture, medicine, epidurals, trigger-point injections, massage, Rolfing, physical therapy, laser therapy, surgery, and more. Where do you start? What works? What doesn’t? Low back and neck problems are challenging, to say the least. There are so many different conditions, manifesting in the same symptoms, (neck and arm pain, headaches, low back and leg pain, etc). Do you have a subluxation, a strain, degenerated disc, spondylolisthesis, stenosis, herniation, bulge, SI problem or piriformis strain? The list goes on. Even the latest cutting edge research does not seem to answer the dilemma of the suffering back patient. Manipulation works or it does not work. Traction is a miracle – or is it useless? Is spinal decompression the answer? Yes and no. And of course, surgery certainly has its supporters and detractors. Without going into great detail, every known modality and procedure relative to low back conditions have clinical trials and “research” that support or denigrate it. Today, we have severely divided clinical professionals, relative to what works and what does not. What “works” is usually heavily influenced by the profession the person giving you advice is in.

After 30 years in practice, it is my observation that all of these professional’s approaches work, for the right patient. Over the years, I have worked personally with professionals from pretty much every one of the disciplines listed above, and the reality is if you are the properly selected patient for that particular modality it will work most of the time. Someone whose condition is appropriate for chiropractic may not have the same success with a massage therapist and/ or a physical therapist and vice versa. Someone with a “true” stenosis may only respond well to surgery. Someone with low back pain and an undetected gait problem may never get better until their short leg or pronated feet are corrected. Spinal Decompression is great for most disc problems, but may make some worse. Nothing works for everybody, but everything works for somebody.

here are many causes for hyper pigmentation and uneven skin tone, and there are different depths of damage in the skin. Systemic pigmentation is damage at the cellular level and has affected the cell itself. This is very difficult to correct at a superficial level, and sometimes even the most aggressive medical treatments will not be able to eliminate the problem. Surface pigmentation, discoloration at the superficial level, is generally more successfully treated. However, much can be done to overall brighten and lighten skin and protect from further damage. Beware of overuse of products that contain hydroquinone. eviewed by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt for Healthy Beginnings Magazine During the sixties, author and poet Jane Roberts began channeling a non-physical personality called Seth. Her husband, Robert Butts, painstakingly wrote down every word. Thirty years and twenty three books later, Jane passed away. But the wisdom of Seth lives on in the archives of Yale University and in re-printings of most of the books. The information contained within this huge body of work is truly astounding. The main idea is that we create our personal reality through our conscious beliefs about ourselves, others and the world. Our “point of power” is in the present, not in the past of this life or any other. Also, we are not at the mercy of the subconscious mind or helpless before forces that we cannot understand. Seth explains that the conscious mind directs unconscious activity and has at its command all of the powers of the inner self. These powers are activated according to our ideas about reality. “We are gods couched in creaturehood,” Seth says, “with the ability to form our experience as our thoughts and feelings become actualized.” Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.
Anyone who understands the concepts of the Law of Attraction will find these ideas familiar. However, they are deeper and more complex than the easily understood language in the Abraham-Hicks work. For instance, Seth explains, “If there are strongly negative characteristics present in your most intimate thoughts, these actually form a screen or bars between you and a more full life; you look through the bars, not seeing them. Until they are recognized, they are impediments to your progress. It is up to you to recognize them and discover the circumstances behind their existence.” Seth explains that your present feelings and expectations can always be used to check your progress. If you don’t like your experience, then you must change the nature of your conscious thoughts and expectations. You must alter the kind of messages that you are sending through your thoughts to your own body, as well as to friends and associates. Each thought has a result. Even in times that seem chaotic, we are never powerless. Each of us, regardless of our position, status, circumstance or physical condition, is in control of our own personal experience. But we have not been taught that. Childhood programming is hard to reject and we’ve been taught that things 30
happen to us. The culture, our families and even most religions teach us that. So in adulthood, if we are presented with the idea that we create our own reality it’s quite a stretch to make that mental adjustment. Many people decide they do not want that much responsibility, and simply reject the idea. They want to believe that someone else is pulling the strings. However, our personal world as we know it is a picture of our own expectations. Our beliefs are out-pictured in our personal lives. Seth says, “The world as the race of man knows it is the materialization en masse of your individual expectations. You are a creator creating your expectations into physical form. You can change the physical world you see. In fact, you do change it without even knowing it.” This book explains how physical reality is formed, with emphasis placed upon ways of changing unwanted aspects of our individual experience. This is no Pollyanna self-help book. The methods given are highly practical, workable and within the abilities of anyone genuinely concerned with making his/her life more joyful and productive. It’s not easy reading. One must think. When you find your old ideas being challenged, you must have enough curiosity to leave resistance behind and forge ahead and see what in the world is coming next. Then gradually the light begins to dawn and you can see why certain people and situations (positive or negative) are drawn to you. The focus here is on the fact that all healings (physical, emotional, psychological, etc.) are the result of the acceptance of one basic fact: this is a vibrational universe, and matter is formed through focus and intention, since every thought or emotion has its own vibration, its own electromagnetic properties. Each living being possesses it, and the living world consists of a spontaneous cooperation that exists between the smallest and the greatest. All consciousness creates the world, rising out of feeling-tone.” The word “tone” has a new meaning when we read that, “thoughts, emotions and beliefs in general possess an electromagnetic reality but whether you know it or not, they also have an inner sound value.” Outer sound is a way of conscious communication, but inner sound (which we cannot hear with our physical ears) ‘affects the atoms and molecules of your cells.’ Seth says, “It does not matter in which language you are addressing yourself. The inner sound is formed by your intent, expectations and beliefs.” For instance, telling yourself you are tired, over and over, simply reinforces that condition. Instead, tell yourself that your body is refreshing itself and if necessary, lie down or sit quietly for a few moments. That inner sound (vibrational frequency – like a radio signal) is infinitely powerful; it’s the ongoing creator of your body and of your personal affairs, and it’s coming from your December 2010

it is time for someone else to host the big party? Maybe you want to go for a hike in the woods on New Year’s Day, rather than watch football. Some people may seek more flexibility in their holiday gift-giving customs. Now may be the time to start a new tradition, or no tradition at all. In negotiating the winter and holiday season it is important to listen to your instincts and true feelings. This can relate to both your physical and spiritual needs. For example, if in the winter you feel the desire to withdraw a bit from some social activities, perhaps this is what you need to do. Maybe it is a time for you to get more in touch with your deeper self--a time to journal, reflect on and process some of the events of the previous seasons. Solitude, a precious gift in its own right, can help counterbalance some of the extroverted and materialistic tendencies that frequently overtake this season. In the quiet darkness of winter, trees and bulbs extend their roots, and seeds are prepared to take growth. Sometimes we need to do the same. HB
Written by Andy Drymalski, Ed.D. Winter tends to be a time of cold and snow, leafless trees and shortened days. Some people are especially sensitive to the reduced sunlight and cold weather common to this season. They may experience changes in their metabolism, such as decreased energy and a desire to eat and sleep more than usual. Certain individuals may crave more solitude in their lives. Perhaps, like a bear, a part of us wants to hibernate--to dream big dreams that might guide and nourish us in the coming year. If the above symptoms are accompanied by feelings of sadness or a loss of pleasure in life, then we may be experiencing depression. Depression is not uncommon in the winter months; and for some people, a pattern of seasonal depression takes place. Hormonal changes within the body, caused by reduced exposure to the sun, can contribute to the development of depression symptoms in certain individuals. However, it is also important to keep in mind that the body and spirit have different needs and preferences with regards to diet, activities and activity levels during the different seasons. Honoring our own biological and psychological rhythms can be the difference between health and sickness as the seasons change. Depression during the winter can also occur because we find the holidays draining in some way. Perhaps we are turned off by the commercialism and consumerism that flourish this time of year. Maybe we are overwhelmed by all of the social activities and parties we feel obliged to attend or host. Additionally, the pain of lost loved ones can be especially poignant during this season. And then there is the matter of the “post holiday blues,” an emotional letdown that is sometimes experienced when the holiday frenzy has passed. In some instances we make ourselves depressed by trying to live up to certain family or societal expectations about how we should feel or behave. When this happens, we may find ourselves feeding traditions that no longer feed us. Perhaps December 2010

Simple Holiday Craft Ideas J ust imagine that, this holiday season,
instead of spending the weeks leading up to the festivities running around in a frenzy, frantically searching for deals on the season’s most coveted new shiny object, you could be at home, calmly enjoying the peaceful processes of creating handmade gifts for the ones you love. Apart from the initial gathering of materials, handmade gifts make it possible to avoid an excess of errands, and shopping malls altogether, in the lead up to the holidays. Handmade gifts have the added bonus of imparting something heartfelt in a one-of-kind creation for someone you love. With a little bit of imagination, you may discover that you already have many items around your home that are perfect for creating beautiful gifts from re-purposed materials. Home-made gifts are gentle on the budget and the earth. Below is a list of ideas for simple crafts that are not costly, in terms of either materials or time. Home-made gift ideas: Candles Do you have old bees-wax candles that have wicks that are burned down? You can recycle the wax into new candles! Sweets and Treats Homemade treats are always a simple and easy gift. Whether cookies, candies, jams, jellies, apple sauce, tea or any thing else you can dream up in the kitchen, they will be well received and enjoyed by all. Just be sure you’re aware of any dietary restrictions that the recipients may have.

Many simple games and toys are easy to craft. Finger puppets and stuffed animals can be made from old clothing and linens, and decorated with buttons and beads. Bean bags are easy to make with sturdy scrap fabric and old dried beans or rice from the cupboard. “Go Fish” games can be made by attaching a few small magnets to fabric or felted fish, and a larger magnet to a pole, which can be easily fashioned from a smooth stick and colorful twine. n December we come back to the fast-changing astrology that is linked to Mercury retrograde and eclipses. For those who can remember as far back as December 2009, this is similar, but not quite the overwhelming whirlwind of energy. Still, navigating through holidays when Mercury is retrograde (Dec. 10-30, which can add confusion, tense communication and the sense of things not quite going the way you plan) and eclipses (lunar on Dec. 21 and solar on Jan. 4, which increase the intensity of experience, and enhance the sense of rapidly moving into another phase of your life) calling for foresight, skill, patience and all the spiritual growth that you’ve been working on for so long. This is the time to put it all to work. I suggest you plan to do less than you think you should; I suggest you do your best to get rid of the word “should” altogether, and aim to do what feels right. Aries (March 20-April 19) There’s something you need to forget about and move on. The sticking point is emotional; you seem to think it’s ethical or spiritual. These are merely rationalizations, or layers of language and concept draped over an emotional attachment. If you need some leverage, I suggest you break the issue down into its fundamental parts, and use logic. Yet there’s also a hint that it’s not your material that’s bothering you; someone else’s judgments are lingering, potentially from childhood. If you could look at this issue subtracting your parents’ filters, subtracting the influence of religion, and assess it through your values alone, what would it look like? This sticking point, this bit of doubt about whether you’re ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, may be what’s holding you back from some significant accomplishments. Set yourself free. Taurus (April 19-May 20) Have you considered the extent to which your psychological orientation is fixated on the past, and how this obscures your view of the present? This would be a good time, because the issue is in plain sight. Usually, it’s hidden, there is a word in Sanskrit, sumscara, which means the latent past impressions that obscure our view of the moment we’re actually in. These include belief systems and concepts through which you try to process your immediate impressions, which is a little like trying to cook dinner in the same pots you used last night without washing them first. You may need to do some extra scrubbing, but at the moment you have extra help. Use your senses, and feel how you respond to new experiences that come your way. Comparisons are unnecessary; direct perception will teach you much more. Gemini (May 20-June 21) You run the risk of digging yourself deeper into an unsavory relationship or contractual situation. I suggest you keep your mind on the simple issues and the basic feelings involved. Ask yourself why it’s necessary for you to be involved in the affairs of anyone but yourself. This is a good opportunity to extract yourself from a situation that is

not working for you, or that is simply too complicated for your tastes. The issue you may be dealing with is obsession. Is it yours or that of someone else? Very good question. The energy is in the environment, and you can now explore it and see your responses and your circumstances for what they actually are. But this adventure comes down to something even more basic: how do you claim your power in a situation where you feel you have none? Cancer (June 21-July 22) As you know, your mind works on many levels. Your feelings exist on many levels. Some of these are what both psychologists and spiritual teachers call “unconscious.” Of course, when the unconscious manifests in your perception, it becomes conscious, though it helps if you choose to notice. The seemingly odd circumstances of one particular relationship are a demonstration of this phenomenon. Acknowledge everything that comes to your awareness. Notice the tendency of a conversation to loop back on itself. You will need a few reality checkpoints in order to navigate this one; some solid or trusted value that you can depend on as a reference point. Remember that, whatever may be going on in the world of ego, soul connection is where it’s at. And this you have. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Focus on a health and mental wellbeing strategy now, and stick to it. Part of the plan needs to be refining your process as the environment around you and within you changes. Make sure you keep up with dietary and exercise regimens through the holidays, and remember to keep expressing yourself in ways that have nothing to do with work or family; spiritual practice comes to mind, with plenty of time for contemplation. Yes, this is a tall order with all the obligations of the holiday season, but the benefits will pay off, and the problems you prevent will be well worth the relatively small investment. Scale back your plans and do only what is the most meaningful: and above all; please take care of yourself before you take care of others.

very pinpoint bull’s eye - is learning how to focus your intentions. Get away from “I need” and learn how to state “I want.” Let any form of irritation or anger quickly propel you to a better place. Your feelings are the energy source, and you control the rudder with your mind. This is not the way most people live; we humans tend to be jerked around by our feelings and never get to the point of decision about them. If you can do that, you’ll go one step better than ruling the world. You will rule your life, and you will do so gracefully.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Sometimes the best creativity is the messiest and the most disruptive to our daily routine. At a certain point the creative process takes over and becomes the core of your life and this is what I suggest you guide yourself toward. It’s actually truly liberating when that happens, the moment you realize that all this other stuff is really basic maintenance, and that the focus, the actual purpose of existence, is engaging your passions. I know there are many people who would wonder if this is even possible in the world. I can tell you that while it may be challenging, it’s definitely possible. You may have to re-gather your sense of purpose many times, even several times a day, but once you’re centered, you’ll wonder how you ever lived any other way.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) There’s plenty rumbling in the depths of your psyche. It may be coming out in dreams, fantasies and subtle fears; I suggest you be intimidated by nothing that you notice going through your mind. You’re getting a rare opportunity to explore a region of consciousness that most of the world denies the existence of. In that space, some things are scary, some are exquisitely pleasurable, and many are taboo. This may raise the question, “what is real and what is not?” On one level, everything is equal: anything you think is a thought; anything you feel is a feeling; anything you see or hear is a perception. What manifests in a more tangible form is what you attach to, or put energy into. In this, you have significant freedom to choose, and I suggest you choose on the basis of what you want.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Be aware of people to whom you have intense emotional reactions, and handle them carefully. If you can, keep them out of your home, or keep the visit short. If you “must” spend time with someone, maybe go out to dinner. As for those with whom you already share your home, do your best to set up listening sessions, or keep the focus there all the time. Remove any irritants that you can, such as those created by over-commitment. Since you have the benefit of knowing the astrology in advance, I can tell you that this holiday season has the potential to be wild and wooly. If you stay centered and remember what is important to you, you’ll be able to stay focused and do just fine. Remember, your home is your home.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) I suggest you take an emotionally detached approach to whatever is going on amongst your friends this month. People you care about may be caught in some odd dramas, which to you look like they have no real meaning. That’s the thing; they may not, and the most significant meaning they have is what people assign to them, so be careful when interpreting. Don’t let any of this distract you from your business affairs. Keep your focus. If you take nothing for granted, you’ll see your potential for what it is. Be honest about your message, remembering that you may need to explain yourself several times before the point gets across to those who matter the most. If anything gets strange in a correspondence with a friend, partner or colleague, go to the phone, or better yet, talk in person. It will be easier and you will learn more. HB

his Thanksgiving, you may find yourself with a diverse gathering of folks with different dietary needs: perhaps a vegetarian or vegan guest, or maybe you yourself are celebrating turkeyfree. What are some things to look for when selecting a meatless turkey alternative to ensure that it is healthy, delicious and accessible for everyone at your table? Let’s look closer at three popular pre-packaged turkey products and explore some pros and cons: Tofurkey Vegetarian Feast Ingredients: Water, vital wheat gluten, organic tofu (water, organic soybeans, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride), white beans, garbanzo beans, non-geneticallyengineered corn starch, natural vegetarian flavor, expeller pressed non-genetically-engineered canola oil, shoyu soy sauce (water, nongenetically-engineered soy beans, wheat, salt, culture), spices, lemon juice, calcium lactate from beets. Pros: Lots of organic ingredients and ingredients that have not been genetically modified is a plus. Many ingredients such as beans, shoyu sauce, lemon juice and so forth are recognizable as actual foods. This product is vegan. Cons: The source of other ingredients in this meal is a little bit vague; for example, what exactly is natural vegetarian flavor? This product is not gluten-free and would not be accessible to those with gluten sensitivities.

Quorn Turk’y Roast Ingredients: Mycoprotein (58%), rehydrated egg white, pea fiber. Contains 2% or less of autolyzed yeast extract, onion powder, tapioca and potato maltodextrin, natural flavor from non-meat sources, salt, dextrose, gum arabic, calcium lactate, sage extract, canola oil, citric acid, garlic powder, pepper, sunflower & palm kernel oil. Pros: Well, it’s vegetarian, I think. Cons: No organic or non-gmo ingredients are specified. What is Mycoprotein? Keep in mind that even though some food names are recognizable, every ingredient has already been heavily processed before becoming a part of this processed “turkey.” The re-hydrated egg white makes this one a no-go for vegans. Is this suitable for glutenfree people? Field Celebration Roast Ingredients: Filtered water, vital wheat gluten, expeller pressed safflower oil, naturallyflavored yeast extract, barley malt, butternut squash, organic wheat flour, granulated garlic, apples, mushrooms, onion powder, garlic, organic wheat flakes, yellow pea flour, lemon juice, red wine, tomato paste, irish moss (sea vegetable) extract, black pepper, rubbed sage, rosemary, spices, natural liquid smoke and paprika.
It’s kind of a strange phenomenon that there are people who choose not to eat meat, but turn around and create or consume very involved processed foods that attempt to replicate the appearance, texture and flavor of meat. Many good arguments have been made about the virtues of a plant-based diet, and its ability to reduce our carbon footprint. It is still important to keep in mind that if the plants are genetically modified, mono-cropped, shipped long distances, heavily processed, heavily packaged, and shipped at least once more before we drive to buy them, there is still a big impact made on the earth from all that action. Perhaps as we gather to celebrate this year, those of us who don’t eat meat can create new meal traditions that are not so attached to the form of a turkey. Perhaps the attachment has been standing in the way of some new and epic home-cooked discovery. HB

The reader might review some of our previous articles on adrenal health in HB Magazine. To summarize the adrenal loves sleep, eight or nine hours per night. Vacations and reducing stress in your life always help your adrenal. It is always important to feed the adrenal glands with the nutrients that they must have to function normally. The highest concentration of vitamin C in the human body is in the adrenal cortex. We suggest at least two thousand milligrams of vitamin C per day. People under stress can take a great deal more. Very stressed and sick patients can take 5,000 to 100,000 mgs. intravenously to treat big deficits, infections and chronic illness. The adrenal also loves B vitamins, especially, B5 pantothenic acid and amino acid supplementation which we will address next month along with many herbals, homeopathics and fatty acids help repair the many deficiencies which contribute to lost sleep.

fter fatigue and pain issues, sleep disturbances are the most common complaint that most patients experience. Difficulty going to sleep, awakening in the night, awakening early disturbs the sleep pattern which affects one’s entire life. Life requirements such as getting a spouse off to work at 5 AM, or working two jobs and going to school while taking care of children, snoring, sleep apnea and unmitigated, unrelenting life stress are frequent scenarios of sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is a frequently-used torture method. It distorts all bodily processes. So what are the causes of insomnia? Stress is the number one cause because it affects the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla. The adrenal gland sits on the kidneys and looks like Napoleon’s hat. It has two basic elements, the outside (cortex) and the inside (medulla). (See diagram,) The outside makes 40 plus hormones and the middle makes adrenalin (speedy, anxious, and panicky). One of the many jobs of the adrenal cortex is to store reserve blood sugar in the liver (glycogen). At night when we are not eating, if the adrenal cortex is stressed the blood sugar starts to drop. The brain then starts to freak out because we don’t have adequate blood sugar for all of our 100 trillion cells that will die without it. The brain then signals the adrenal glands and adrenalin and cortisol are dumped into the blood stream to convert storage fat into blood sugar in the liver. This works great and we don’t die but it gives an adrenalin rush to our body. It is like trying to sleep on speed or coffee. Patients complain that they were completely exhausted but now are totally wired in the night, awake with heart pounding, reviewing the stresses of the day in the middle of the night, which aggravates the situation. Aging prostates and heart disease also cause frequent awakening for urination and some people have a difficult time returning to sleep.

Of critical importance is to avoid the trap of taking patent medicine for insomnia if at all possible. I
f at some point one of my patients is given the diagnosis of cancer, they tell me that they were told that they need chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or a combination of them all. Many of them are well aware of the horrors in taking any of these courses of action; so, their first question to me is, “What else is available?” To this question, the conventional answer usually is…nothing else is available. I am here to tell you, unequivocally, that is NOT true! What is true is that there are a number of therapies available to fight cancer, all of which were found to be as effective (if not more effective) than conventional treatment, without the significant morbidity and mortality that often accompany conventional chemotherapy and radiation. One of these therapies is called Insulin Potentiated Therapy, or IPT. This treatment is based on sound principles that were proven and understood by the establishment, and ignored, for almost 80 years. It was first discovered and utilized in Mexico in the 1930’s. In 1931, a German physician, Otto Warburg, M.D., PhD, received a Nobel prize for proving that all cancer cells (regardless of location or type) use an abnormal type of metabolism (way of burning sugar in order to obtain energy to grow and prosper) called anaerobic metabolism. This way of processing sugar is 18 times less efficient than what our normal cells do, which is to combine oxygen with sugar, called aerobic metabolism, before chemically burning it to produce the energy. What many people have heard is that cancer cells “LOVE” sugar. This is not true. What is true is that they “REQUIRE” 18 times more sugar than normal cells in order to grow; and they can be big bullies about getting it, as well as many other Life’s a journey. nutrients in the body. That is why you see many cancer patients “waste away” or become “cachechtic” before they die. It is also the proven reason that cancer cells have between 10-20 times the number of insulin receptors on their cell membranes than normal cells. This makes them much more responsive to fluctuations in insulin (and sugar) levels.
sugar across the cell membranes. Conventional chemo drugs can be used in this formula (although not always) but they are given at 1/10th of the full dose. The reason it can be done effectively this way is because of the “targeting” characteristic of IPT. Thus most, if not all, of the bad side effects of chemo can be avoided. The patient is then given certain supplements along with oral Gatorade to help bring the sugar level back up to normal.
This characteristic can be used as a weapon to selectively deliver a variety of compounds into the cancer cells and kill them, while helping protect the normal cells. It’s kind of like a laser guided bomb.
Many people (including physicians) hear the terms “Alternative or Integrative” Medicine and think of massage, incense and acupuncture. They might think, “It can’t be powerful enough to treat something like cancer!” Nothing could be further from the truth, and this is only one of a number of different possible treatments found “outside the box”! Interestingly, these principles are applied every day in conventional oncology when the doctor does a PET scan. The mechanism of a PET scan is that they radioacitvely “tag” some sugar molecules and inject them into a vein. They then wait about and hour and put you under a “nuclear scanner” to see where the sugar went first. And, guess what, it always goes to, and concentrates in, the cancer cells first; and that is how they can tell where the cancer is. Do you think sugar intake can help support tumor growth? Of course it can!

This being said, it is not possible to totally eliminate sugar from your diet, in part, because all our cells require a certain amount of it, most especially the brain, to function normally. But the cancer cells are “bullies” about grabbing much of it first! All carbohydrates get turned into sugar in the body. Let’s be clear, you cannot cure cancer by not eating sugar. However, it is safe to say that, if you have been diagnosed with cancer, it is a good idea to stay away from all sources of concentrated sugar. That means no candy, alcohol, and what are called “simple” carbohydrates (white bread, pasta, saltine crackers, white rice, etc.), because they will quickly raise the blood sugar.

If you Google IPT, you will find many websites where doctors claim that it is dangerous, because of lowering the blood sugar. To them I say, “Dangerous compared to what...full dose chemotherapy!?!” Since 2004, I have supervised over 7500 IPT treatments and have not lost one patient to IPT during that time.

The treatment itself must be done in an office that can perform intravenous therapies, run by a licensed physician. First, a dose of insulin is given in an IV to the fasting patient. That is designed to drop the blood sugar about half way between a low to normal sugar of 65, down into the 30’s. The sugar is monitored closely and never allowed to go below that. At this level, the cancer cells literally start “starving” for sugar (because of their increased need for it) and they do what is called opening up their cell membranes in an attempt to catch or grab any sugar molecules floating by in the blood. It is called the “therapeutic window”. At this point, they become more vulnerable to other compounds penetrating into the cell and the patient is given an IV push of sugar. all of the nutrients from food. They then distribute nutrition to all parts of the body: skin, flesh, muscle, organs, etc. These villi have an area of absorption the size of two football fields. When they are destroyed or damaged, the parts of the body which are most sensitive to the absence of nutrition will react first and give off symptoms characteristic of that organ, or muscle, or skin area, etc. The area affected varies from person to person. For people who are just sensitive to gluten, the damage is not so extreme. The villi may be damaged to some extent, but it is likely that the undigested gluten has coated the villi, reducing the nutrition absorption area. The undigested gluten can also cause stomach pain, gas and diarrhea in sensitive people. With these people, sensitive body parts can also be affected and give off elusive and misleading systems. eorge Bernard Shaw once said that “youth is wasted on the young.” One of the great ironies of life is how we stumble though youth with little clue as to what truly gives our life joy and meaning. The experiences we gain, as we pass from young to not-so-young, give us that knowledge... but just as we start to sort things out, our bodies begin to let us down.
The biochemical pathways responsible for aging are poorly understood, and science is far from being able to reverse or even halt them. Still, many of the major symptoms the years bring can be decreased through hormone therapy and lifestyle changes. The primary sex hormone in men is testosterone. Blood levels of testosterone begin dropping about 1 percent per year after age 30; this decrease, often called Andropause, causes most of the physical symptoms of aging in men. These include depression or grumpiness; loss of energy and motivation; decreases in muscular strength, libido or erectile function; an increase in upper and central body fat; and osteoporosis. For the same reasons young athletes take large doses of testosterone to boost their athletic performance, replacing age-related decreases in testosterone can help restore our ability to enjoy the things we moved to Tahoe to do, like ski, hike and mountain bike. Research also shows an important role for maintaining both muscle and bone mass in healthy aging. Advances in blood testing have made it easy to check for low testosterone, and supplementation through prescription creams and gels is very easy and safe. In spite of this, few men undergo testing and the topic is little discussed, probably because testosterone is a sex hormone and men don’t want to consider the possibility that they might not have as much as they used to. There are a few simple steps you can take to maximize your testosterone levels without any medical testing or treatment, and I would recommend them for almost all men. 1) 2) 3) 4)
Choose organic milk, meat and eggs. This reduces your exposure to livestock hormone residues. Minimize use of plastics. The residues can disrupt normal hormone cycling. Drink out of glass or ceramic, use glass storage containers and avoid foods packaged in plastic; fresh tastes better anyway! Avoid soy-based foods, which contain phytoestrogens and may decrease testosterone. Read labels! This includes many packaged foods, which contain shelf-stable soy oil or soy protein. Weight training once a week with heavy weights, especially squats or dead-lifts, will give most men a boost in testosterone levels, in addition to increasing muscle mass and bone density. Taken together, these changes may make a small difference, and for many that is enough. They’re also easy and healthy lifestyle changes. Car Travel Tips Car rides are filled with potential hazards. You should avoid leaving your pet unattended in the vehicle. It is easy for your pet to get heatstroke. If you must leave your pet in the vehicle while

all before you leave to make sure your hotel accepts pets. There may be restrictions or fees. Find out where the veterinary clinics are located close to where you are staying. Vaccinations may be required when traveling abroad. Rabies is one that is required to and from the United States. You should take your pet to your vet prior to the trip. Find out what vaccinations are required, and what diseases or problems may exist at your destination. Plan your mode of transportation in advance. Buses and trains will not allow dogs on board. Airlines have various rules and restrictions; call in advance to avoid problems. Avoid crowded times of the day and places that may make your pet nervous or skittish. Even if your pet is naturally docile and calm, it may suddenly bolt for open windows or doors when confronted with new and unusual surroundings, people, and smells. Using a leash is often the best preventative for a lost pet. An identification tag is also always a good idea, especially when your pet is in unfamiliar territory. You should always keep identification tags on your pet, as well as a leash for your dog when it is outside. You may also want to bring along a current photo of your pet for identification purposes in case your pet does become lost.
you are gone, leave at least two windows open for a cross draft and fresh air. A car can heat up to devastating temperatures in a very short amount of time. Here are some tips: Plan for twice as many rest stops as you would for your children. Animals need time to stretch and go to the bathroom more often than humans. Feed your pet only a few small meals before leaving on your trip to avoid motion sickness. Take your pet for ‘warm up’ car rides to prepare your pet for the long ride ahead, especially if your pet has never been on a car ride before. If you have a dog, teach it to lie down quietly inside of the vehicle, and avoid allowing it to stick its head out of the windows. This may be a bother to other drivers, as well as a hazard to your dog’s eyes. If you have a cat, you won’t be able to train it. However, some cats will lie comfortably in a corner of the car, while others may need to be placed in a carrier. You may want to keep a leash on your pet even when in the car to prevent it from trying to bolt out the window if it becomes frightened by something. Car harnesses will keep your pet safely restrained while riding in your vehicle. You should keep a pet travel kit, just as you would a medical kit for yourself. In your pet travel kit you should keep food,

dishes, a can opener if you have a cat, some treats, a favorite toy, a blanket, and a comb or brush. You may also want to bring a sedative, if prescribed by your vet, just to be safe. Paper towels, odor and stain removal supplies to clean up after your pet are also good to bring along. Air Travel Tips Air travel is stressful enough without a pet. Airports are extremely crowded, and you have to schedule and plan in advance to avoid various complications. Here are some things you can do: Call ahead to make sure that your pet will be allowed in a carrier under the seat, or if it must be transported separately. For smaller pets, especially fish, check with the airline freight departments or pet stores to supply shipping containers for your pet. You should do this in advance to allow your pet to become familiar with its new environment. The transportation process is stressful enough, and smaller animals are often more susceptible to stress and shock than larger ones. Some airlines require a health certificate before they fly. Call ahead to find out what is required. Clip your pet’s nails to avoid snagging and injuries. Make sure that you and your pet’s identification, including the destination, are clearly labeled on your pets tag and kennel. ‘Live animal’ should also be added on the kennel in big letters, as well as any additional care information your pet may require. Be early, especially if your pet is coming with you in the airplane. If you are shipping your pet, give yourself two hours to make sure your pet is processed and gets on the flight. Notify the person receiving the pet that it is on the way. Give them the flight and waybill number. Pets can usually be picked up within 90 minutes of flight arrival. ometimes you don’t need so much astrology to do astrology. Everyone knows that in the Northern Hemisphere we tend to have very short days around the time of the winter solstice, which is approaching in about three weeks. And for many people, an utterly mad three weeks these are. There’s the mix of end-of-the-year business with holiday shopping and preparing to either travel, or have guests. You can be the biggest atheist in the world and you can still get caught in the madness. And during these three weeks, the days get ever shorter. Your body has the feeling that the Sun has disappeared. For many people, this is associated with seasonal affective disorder; that is, depression that is caused by the weather effects of winter. To keep this at bay, you have many options, though the best one - regular exercise - takes effort and focus that may seem impossible. Still, if you’re feeling frustrated or gloomy, see if a few visits to the gym don’t turn it around for you.
I also suggest you do some research on vitamin D. Everyone who works inside, lives far from the equator or uses sunscreen is going to be deficient in this substance, which isn’t really a vitamin. Recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and there are exceedingly few food sources of vitamin D. The only way to get it is to supplement or to get out in the Sun. And if it’s dark much of the day that is unlikely to happen. I suggest you do some research on vitamin D. A great resource is a site called Mercola.com, published by a doctor in Chicago.
Do what you can to de-stress. Do less, spend less, travel less and only do what you truly want to do, to the extent that you can. Some things are difficult to avoid. Others are easier and I suggest you take every vaguely reasonable option to avoid everything you don’t want to do.
Meanwhile, maintaining nutrition will help, but making sure that you take your vices in moderation will be a great asset as well.
What we typically miss during holiday time is some of the most profoundly introspective astrology of the year. There is an inner window open. Try to slow down, focus on existence, and remember that the birth of the Sun is coming soon. HB
There are other truly strange astrological effects that take place at this time of year, associated with the Sun’s passage through Sagittarius. It’s not merely the holidays and the days growing so much shorter that create the sense of compression, depression and veritable panic this time of year. The Sun goes past an intergalactic point called the Great Attractor in early December, then by midmonth is passing by our own Galactic Core (the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy). These points feel like too darned much energy all at once, which we simply cannot process through normal means.
