ireworks, picnics and watermelon remind me of a very special holiday, the Fourth of July; the birthday of our great country. It is a celebration of Independence; the land of the free. It is up to us, the people of this beautiful terrain, to keep it that way for generations to come. We can each do our part to achieve a strong and vibrant community. Keeping yourself healthy is key; read product labels and prescription disclaimers, and stay in tune with your physical and emotional being. Strive to achieve a healthier family, including your children and pets. Become knowledgeable of where your money goes: the products you consume and the places where you shop. Familiarize yourself with local, regional and national political issues/campaigns. Although they may not interest you, they will determine rules and regulations that will directly affect you and your family. Being healthy is being aware, inside and out. We can spread health through our healthy actions. If a child, friend, co-worker or neighbor watches your healthy deeds, chances are they will follow your actions or at least begin to examine their own behavior. Before long, your efforts become widespread. The health of our nation truly depends on the overall health of its occupants. In honor of the Fourth of July, and to get a different perspective on the birth and direction of our free nation, I asked Bob Ayres of Astrological Alchemy to draft an astrology charting of the United States of America for this issue in lieu of the 12 month horoscopes. In addition to celebrating the Fourth of July, please find many interesting health articles, topics ranging from Peripheral Neropathy, The Yeast Beast and Woman & Moon Cycles, to articles that concentrate on mental reflection: Change the Past and Wounds are a portal to God part three. The staff and I wish you a happy and healthy month of July!

he word picnic is quite possibly derived from the French word, “pique-nique,” describing a group of people dining Your Loca l Reso urce for Natu ral Livin g in a restaurant, who brought their own wine. Some reference books list its origin as unknown. Regardless of its beginnings, picnics are enjoyed by many people, across the globe. Picnics vary in size, food and location. Some people bring coolers filled with chilled food, while others use traditional picnic baskets to carry food that does not require hot or cold temperatures. Most parks in the United States have specific picnic areas, with tables and grills for public use. There are people who have loungestyle picnics and those who accompany their picnic with outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming and biking. Common picnic areas might include a local, regional or national park, a beach, a pool, a backyard and to some children, a living room floor and blanket will suffice. Whether you grab a few items from the store and head to a local park, or pack your own food into a “pic-a-nic” basket, keep the following in mind: Our WOUndS are a POrTaL TO GOD

• Try using reusable dish ware. If you have to use single-use, try disposable dining ware made from Bamboo. • Wrap your sandwiches in unbleached wax paper bags, instead of plastic. • Bring an extra bag for your recyclables, instead of throwing them into the garbage. • Try a “raw” picnic. Bring a variety of veggies, fruits and nuts to munch on. • Instead of soda, juice and alcohol beverages, drink water during your picnic. On the way home, stop off for a cold drink as a treat. •Always make sure to leave your picnic site clean and unscathed.

ave you ever wondered about the new trend in make-up, made with minerals? Vicki Keller, of Precision Blending by Vicki, has the answers that you are looking for. She is a licensed esthetician who is taking make-up to the next level! Keller graduated from Prater Way Beauty College in Reno, and like many new beauty school graduates, went into the salon business. She remembers hearing her clients say that they had a hard time finding make-up that did not cause break-outs, skin sensitivities or allergic reactions. Not to mention, products that did not break their bank. Another issue for her make-up customers: discontinued colors. What’s a girl to do when her favorite lipstick color is going to leave her make-up bag forever? That’s where Keller comes in. Her unique products are custom blended to match each client’s skin tone. “When a client comes into my store, they can get exactly what they want, not close to what they want,” Keller commented. Precision Blending by Vicki specializes in custom blended, pure mineral make-up, custom color lipstick, custom blended perfume and cologne oils, makeup accessories and acne therapy products. Keller guides her clients through the process of finding the right make-up coverage and color, along with the ap-
propriate make-up accessories. After months of testing and combining many ingredients, Keller created the Precision Blending formula. The make-up itself is comprised of high quality, natural ingredients. It does not contain harsh chemicals or preservatives. It is also a natural SPF. It will not clog pores and it is great for sensitive skin; perfect coverage for acne and rosacea. The main difference between Precision Blending make-up and an off-the-shelf mineral make-up is that Precision Blending is 100 percent natural minerals. Most of the make-up with “mineral” listed on the label is made with fillers and preservatives. It is important that Keller’s clients know the difference, as she is an advocate of natural make-up. She works to educate her clients, as well as offer a product that is specifically designed for them. During a customer’s first visit, Keller provides a brief consultation, which consists of a question and answer period for both her and the client. Next is the application session. She will begin to apply a foundation, eyeshadow, blush, etc. that matches their skin tone. If they are unhappy with any colors, Keller works to custom blend the color to suit her client’s preference. Keller teaches her client how to apply the make-up as well. She welcomes

questions and provides a relaxed atmosphere. At the end of the session, she records the client’s information and will keep it on file for future purchases. The consultation/application session is free and the client is under no obligation to make a purchase. “My clients will look really, really good with quality, natural products without emptying their pocketbooks,” Keller said. Precision Blending make-up is inexpensive compared to department store prices, even compared to Target or Wal-Mart. The difference is the personal and professional attention that her clients receive. Keller’s goal is to be the best place in the Reno/Sparks area for high-quality mineral make-up, perfume and cologne oils. Precision Blending is located in the West end of the Shoppers Square Mall at Plumb and Virginia. It is open Monday through Saturday, from 10 am to 7 pm, and on Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm. If you’re looking for custom blended, natural make-up that will fit your budget, Precision Blending is a great choice. Keller provides the time and attention that her clients deserve, she believes that “they have choices on how they look” and most importantly, “that my emphasis is on them.” Go to ad on Page 55.

BRAINHEALTH
Peripheral Neuropathy: Look Beyond the Surface “Peripheral neuropathy is a problem with the nerves that carry information to and from the brain to the legs and feet.“
M
Submitted By Power Health
ost people who suffer from peripheral neuropathy do not know that they have a full spectrum of treatment options. Most believe that (a) they have to take medications that give some relief and have side effects, or the medications do not work, or (b) that there isn’t anything else they can do. To start, clear the following myth from your mind: “only diabetics or multiple sclerosis sufferers get neuropathy.” There are a myriad of different causes of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is a problem with the nerves that carry information to and from the brain to the legs and feet. This produces pain, loss of feeling and the inability to control muscles. But there is already a problem with this definition, just because you feel a symptom in your hand or foot does not mean that is where the problem is. This is a huge, gigantic misunderstanding and it is where diagnoses and treatment of most peripheral neuropathy goes wrong. Most peripheral neuropathy is in fact a complex web of neurological, hormonal, immune and/or nutritional problems. With so many potential causes or combinations of causes of peripheral neuropathy, it is important that peripheral neuropathy sufferers explore all of them, since “one size diagnosis and treatment” does not fit them all. One of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy is a functional disconnection syndrome affecting the parietal lobe of the brain. The right parietal lobe of the brain receives and processes all the signals that come from the nerves in your muscles and joints, on both sides of your body. When the right parietal lobe is functioning properly you have normal sensation, no numbness, tingling and no shooting pains. However, if the parietal lobe starts to weaken or slow down, the signals do not get processed correctly and you feel numbness, tingling and pain in both of your feet, and then months or years later in your July 2010
9
hands. This is what happens when the functional disconnection syndrome occurs in the brain. Functional disconnection syndrome is an electrical imbalance in the frequency of firing between the two sides of the brain. The two parietal lobes should fire equally. When one starts to fire less frequently than the other (due to traumas, emotional stresses, inflammatory or toxic triggers), neurons in the parietal lobe lose their firing “timing” and we get all sorts of symptoms like numbness, tingling, weakness, pins and needles and pain; the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Another major trigger of this condition is an autoimmune response against peripheral nerve tissue. Basically, what happens is your immune system attacks and destroys nerve tissue. It can even attack brain tissue itself. These attacks are triggered by food sensitivities, viruses, infections, high amounts of insulin (diabetics) and high amounts of inflammation. The immune system mistakenly destroys nerve tissue and causes all of the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy whether attacking brain or peripheral nerve tissue. To properly assess and treat peripheral neuropathy, each system of the body must be reviewed and evaluated. Triggers must be eliminated and problems and imbalances in the hormonal, G.I. and immune systems must be corrected. Also, the various imbalances unique to the individual need to be addressed with a coordinated, non-drug approach all at the same time. If this is not done, the sufferer will often spend months and years going from practitioner to practitioner evaluating the various above-mentioned “pieces of the puzzle,” one at a time. Although the patient may occasionally “luck out” by accidentally addressing the correct cause, this disorganized approach to a problem as complex as peripheral neuropathy is usually doomed to fail. It is the reason why medications and surgery yield poor long-term results when utilized as treatment options for the peripheral neuropathy patient. References: 1. Paradiso, D; Crespo Facoaao; B. Colon Hydrotherapy:
The Difference between the Closed System and the Open System. Written By Carol Christian
M
odern lifestyle is typically characterized by fast foods and unhealthy habits, such as excessive intake of medications, alcohol drinks and smoking. These factors, together with the toxins in the environment, cause strain to the human body, resulting in several illnesses. Thus, there are people who go through detoxification treatments to regain their overall sense of well-being. Detoxification therapies are procedures that promote the removal of toxic substances from the body. In standard medicine, detoxification can be synthetically achieved through chelation therapy. However, there are also natural methods of detoxification. These naturopathic treatments include therapeutic massages, water or juice fasting, cleansing diets and cleansing procedures such as enema and colon hydrotherapy. It is believed that most of these therapies have been used since ancient times, as standard medical treatments. One of the ancient detoxification treatments, regaining popularity in modern society, is colon hydrotherapy. It is a cleansing process that is typified by the gentle and regulated introduction of sterilized water to the entire length of the colon through the rectum. The purpose of this treatment is to remove all impacted waste matters in the colon. These hardened, accumulated wastes are believed to be the breeding ground of bad bacteria in the colon as well as the source of toxins. The proliferation of these microorganisms and toxins can lead to autointoxication and may cause a number of diseases that are not limited to constipation, diarrhea and gas pains. Other symptoms of autointoxication include chronic migraines, fatigue, halitosis, skin problems, depression and anxiety. Thus, with the removal of these toxic wastes through colonic irrigation, the body is able to regain its natural vigor. Contrary to the impressions most people likely hold regarding colonic irrigation, the procedure is not at all messy nor is it smelly. Moreover, patients need not concern themselves about decency issues because both forms of equipment were designed in a way that privacy and dignity are preserved at all times. Colonic Irrigation is a system of colon cleansing that is used in clinics and spas that specialize in this type of procedure. It involves pumping sterile water into the rectum at a low pressure so that waste is washed out. Many people seek these services due to symptoms of constipation or bloating, while others consider it a preventative measure against serious illnesses, including cancer. The equipment used to perform colonic irrigation can be an open system or a closed system. An open unit implies that patients are left alone for most of the procedure and must maneuver themselves onto a speculum For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
Closed System
Open System to start the irrigation. There is a much greater risk of damage to the rectum than with a closed system. Also, the open unit does not contain the waste that is flushed from the individual’s colon, so they are exposed to the odors and embarrassment that accompany it. With a closed unit, a specialist is with the individual for the entire irrigation session. The specialist will insert the speculum and begin the procedure. The waste is removed through clear tubing from which it will run into the drainage line. There are no odors to endure and the health risks associated with contamination of the waste are erased. There are a number of clinics and spas in the United States and in other countries that perform this procedure. A person should know what questions to ask once they find a clinic or spa that provides a closed system. Be sure that the person who performs the procedure is certified in colonic hydrotherapy. Make sure that the liquid used for the procedure is sterile water. Some places do not sterilize their water, which increases your risk of infection. The clinic or spa should be able to offer specific details on how long the procedure will last and the steps that they will follow. If they do not sound sure of what they are doing, find someone who is. Both Open and Closed systems are FDA approved. References: 1. Smith, David. Colonic Irrigation Equipment Should Include Closed System. 2. Fitzgerald, Paul. Colon Hydrotherapy, The Difference Between Closed System and Open System. Going Green with Wheatgrass Written By Shelby Molchan
T
he world around you is “going green,” but what about the world inside you, how green (or how clean) is it? Wheatgrass is one of nature’s finest healers. It has a broad effectiveness, and its three most therapeutic roles are blood purification, liver detoxificaton and colon cleansing. Wheatgrass is a balanced source of nutrients, especially high in calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and potassium; as well as zinc and selenium. Grass is a source for all B vitamins. Fresh wheatgrass is two percent protein that is in the form of poly-peptides, which enables efficient assimilation into blood and tissues. It includes 20 amino acids and its spectrum of vitamins is so broad that in 1939 it was accepted as a natural vitamin food by the American Medical Association. Grasses are also the richest sources of chlorophyll on the planet. Green plant cells are the only cells capable of absorbing energy directly from the sun. Research scientist E. Bircher stated that cholorophyll is “concentrated sun power.” It increases heart, lung, intestinal and vascular function. Back in 1911, studies showed that hemin (the part of human blood that carries oxygen) and chlorophyll were surprisingly alike, with the main difference being that the hemin atom is bound by iron and the cholorphyll atom is bound by magnesium. Research proved that wheatgrass works well for people with anemia. Fresh wheatgrass juice, taken im-
mediately after squeezing, is preferred as the enzymes are alive and active. It is a high frequency enzyme elixir that contains more ‘chi’ than superfoods, like blue-green algae. When a person begins to drink wheatgrass juice, they should begin at one ounce and gradually increase the amount as they become accustomed to it. Wheatgrass should be consumed on an empty stomach and it is preferable to wait at least 45 minutes before eating anything else. It is recommended that a person consume two ounces of fresh squeezed wheatgrass juice daily, for normal health maintenance. Therapeutic dosages are from four to ten ounces, and in severe cases up to 20 ounces daily. Nausea and diarrhea are commonly associated with over-drinking wheatgrass, therefore it is recommended that any amount over four ounces be administered rectally. Colonic wheatgrass implants are generally tolerated very well. Some people report feeling cleansed and energized following a colon hydrotherapy session with a wheatgrass implant. Wheatgrass implants assist in the reduction of accumulated toxins in the colon and aid in restoring normal colon function. Therapeutic wheatgrass implants can heal ulcers, soothe tissue, combat bad bacteria, purge the liver and purify the bloodstream. Research from the Hippocrates Institute shows that with a live food diet, and the use of wheatgrass juice, the blood is detoxified and the immune system is strengthened. The study also indicated that patients

gained improved energy and the ability to combat and reverse illness. Wheatgrass can be used for cuts, rashes and sunburns by making a bandage from gauze dipped in fresh juice and rehydrating the bandage hourly for best results. The American Journal of Surgery reported that chlorophyll increased the rate of healing by 25 percent over the non-control group. People also use grass juices as an appetite suppressant, by consuming the juice before a meal. People with asthma use the juice in a compress of wet pulp on the back and chest, and also by consuming it orally as an expectorant. With so many benefits, it seems that wheatgrass is truly a way to cleanse, detoxify, heal and energize the body from the inside out. So, now that you’re doing all that you can to keep the planet green, maybe its time to look internally at what you can do to get your body to “go green.” References: 1. OURS IN UNCOMFORTABLE plane seats. Driving unfamiliar cars. Sleeping in hotel beds. That is the life of Jillian Vail of Ocoee, Fla. Yes, she enjoys selling all-natural French pastries, but covering 30 States and being on the road for 45 to 48 weeks a year took their toll on her shoulders and back. She tried different medications including painkillers, antiinflammatories, even medications for arthritis; she also added heat and ice at home and chiropractic care, too. “It ran the gamut,” the 44-year-old says. “The only thing that really helped was taking it easy, but in today’s world, that’s just not possible anymore.” That’s when she discovered there was another option: deeptissue massage. “I was in Texas, and my back was killing me. I just wanted to get a massage,” she says. “It was about 6 p.m., and I called a bunch of spas, but they were all closed.” When she went to the local grocery store to pick up dinner, she saw a Massage Envy in the same shopping center. Jillian walked in and discovered how much better massage made her feel, and when she learned that Massage Envy had locations throughout the country, in many of the areas she travels to for work, she and her husband signed up. With regular deep-tissue and trigger-point massages, Jillian saw the tension and pain in her shoulders and back dissipate. “I’m not on painkillers or anti-inflammatories anymore,” she says. And even though her life is hard to schedule, she remains committed to regular massages. “Massage relaxes me mentally and physically,” Jillian says. “It’s something I couldn’t live without. We’ve cut back in various ways, but this is one thing we won’t cut back on.” References: 1. Dear Forgive Coach:
I
have been happily married for three years. My husband and I feel like soul mates. There is one issue that keeps coming up between us and it is really odd, but it is definitely affecting how I feel about our relationship. Basically, his mother doesn’t like me. She is quite an intellectual and doesn’t think I am good enough for him and is continually making underhanded remarks about my family or me. She adores him and I can’t imagine that anyone would be good enough for him in her eyes. I supported him through law school and that isn’t enough for her. What is really odd is that he doesn’t stand up to her and I want him to! I feel like he is risking our relationship because he won’t defend me. What should I do? EN Dear En:
I
can only imagine how difficult this situation must be for you. Using the words “soul mates” indicates to me that you feel your relationship runs to great depths and you truly value it. I also might expect that you are looking for validation in this situation and want me to give your husband some sort of “call to action” on your behalf. However, I am going to look at this from another angle. Given that you used the word “intellectual” in the description of your mother-in-law, I have to wonder if there is some sort of trigger for you. What I mean is that I think you might feel insecure with regards to your intellect in this relationship. Is this possible? If you resonate with this to some extent, then I would like you to consider a change

in your approach to this situation. You put your husband through law school, which is fantastic! I can see why you might think he should “defend” you, but why don’t you become your best advocate? Honor yourself for your hard work and your loving support of him and feel it so fully, to the core of your being, that no one can take it away from you. I believe that when you do that, you will feel such strength in who you are in this relationship, that her dishonoring of you will mean nothing and it will dissipate; that energy will literally dissolve. This has nothing to do with your husband. You can provide your best defense by believing in who you are. You will have a much healthier and happier relationship if you proceed

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Written By Robert Ayres
A
t the time of our nation’s birthday, it is appropriate to pause and reflect on what our deeper purpose is as a country. With all of the controversies and conflict in our national political, economic and cultural life, we can easily become lost and confused as to what our country really stands for. If we understand the language of the stars, we know that their alignment at the birth of our nation will clearly delineate the cosmic intentions and destiny of the foundation of our country. The defining moment of our nation’s birth was the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia at 5:10 pm. The Sun, representing the spiritual identity of our country, was in Cancer 13 degrees. Jupiter, the planet of wisdom and generosity, Venus, the planet of money and diplomacy and Mercury, the planet of communication and travel, were also all in Cancer. The position of these planets makes a strong statement about the most fundamental intentions of the foundation of our national destiny. The strong emphasis of Cancer principles embodies the primary theme of our country’s birth. Cancer rules home and family, nature and nurture. It is the goddess principle of the divine feminine. It is the archetype of the mother which creates, nurtures and heals all life. Cancer also expresses the cosmic principle of soul and the source of love. The principle of home and family is to create a safe, secure place that is nurturing and healing. It is a place of sanctuary from the intensity, stress and conflict of the outer world. We must remember that at the time of the founding of our country, our forefathers were all refugees from other countries. All were fleeing Europe because of religious and
political persecution and the lack of economic opportunity. America gave them hope for a new life of spiritual and material fulfillment. As time has passed, disadvantaged people from all over the world have immigrated to this country to make it their home. We are now the most diverse multicultural nation in the world. There is not a race, religion or culture that is not part of the national fabric of our society. The United States is a microcosm of the whole world and all of humanity. We are the key to a planetary experiment to create a global family and demonstrate to the rest of the world that we can all come together as family, working together to create a better world. We are setting an example to other nations and societies that we can transcend the ancient divisions of race, religion, nationality and culture, which divided humanity from time immemorial. The keyword for the Sun in Cancer 13 degrees is Revelation. The United States embodies a higher revelation of the family of humanity coming together in harmony, cooperation and love. Remember what it says on the Statue of Liberty in New York, “Bring me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.” We are a country of immigrants seeking a better life. In the process, we create a new society of unity in diversity. We are manifesting one of the most fundamental cosmic laws of life. Cancer also rules Mother Nature. For anyone who has traveled our country and the world, one cannot avoid realizing that the USA is unique in the abundance and grandeur of nature. Our country is a blessed land of awe-inspiring natural beauty and resources. We are a nation rich in the bounty of nature. With this cornucopia comes the responsibility

to establish right relationship between man and nature. The Native Americans preserved this land; they had a true understanding of its sacredness. Their relationship with this land is destined to become a fundamental part of our culture in the future. We will then be an example to the rest of the world of how humanity is to live in balance and harmony with the Earth. The Moon of the U.S. chart represents the soul of the American people. It is also the planetary ruler of Cancer and therefore the ruler of the chart. At the time our nation was born, the Moon was in Aquarius 27 degrees. Aquarius is the sign that rules the goal of human evolution. It expresses as enlightenment, freedom and liberation. This planetary influence was a powerful, motivating force throughout the history of our country. At the time of the founding of our country, the established form of government was monarchy. There were no democracies or representative governments. We established a new paradigm that became quite common today. We tend to forget the uniqueness of the American experiment. It shifted the governmental power of a nation, from privileged elite to the people. As Lincoln said in his Gettysburg Address, “This is a nation of, by, and for the people.” This radical concept, when put into practice, unleashed the potential for collective national consciousness to catapult us to be leaders of the world. The keyword for the Moon in Aquarius 27 degrees is Repression. The soul of the American people intends to be free from repression and limitation. There are many levels to achieving true freedom and liberation, both spiritually and materially. We are a work in progress. There are
July 2010
USA! many challenges currently and in the future. We must remember the fundamental principles for which our country stands. They need to be regenerated and renewed with each generation. We are a living example to the rest of the world of what is possible for human life and society. When we understand the divine plan for humanity and the Earth, as it has been revealed in the stars, then we know the responsibility that we carry as a nation. The ultimate goal toward which humanity is evolving on this Earth is the perfected manifestation of freedom and love. This state of “Heaven on Earth” will be achieved when every aspect of life radiates these principles. The United States of America is to play a central role in the achievement of this goal. We each carry a responsibility to be true to these qualities of consciousness within our individual lives. Birthdays are a time of renewal of our underlying purpose and destiny. Happy Birthday, USA!

Our Wounds are a Portal to God 'If it is a tight band around your head, do you limit yourself through your thinking and beliefs in some way?”
Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
L
ast month’s article introduced readers to the work of Arnold Mindell, a Jungian-trained psychologist who developed ways of working with body symptoms for personality growth. This article discusses two of Dr. Mindell’s techniques that may help you utilize your body symptoms/illnesses for personal transformation. The first technique involves approaching the symptom(s) as a metaphor for a deeper process occurring, or wanting to occur, in your life. For example, a young woman prone to chronic sinus infections experienced a throbbing pain behind her cheekbones for several weeks. Her therapist, aware of the possible medical components to her client’s illness, sensed that the throbbing sensations might have a symbolic message as well. She asked her client what else in her life was like this repetitive, almost badgering pain. “Maybe it’s like how I criticize myself,” she ventured. “It seems like I’m always putting myself down.” During the session she was helped to examine this self-critical tendency within herself. She
associated it with the voices of her stepfather and ex-husband that had become a part of her own sense of self over the years. The therapist encouraged her to “talk back” to these belittling thoughts and to be more supportive of herself. As she took the advice to heart, the throbbing pain subsided significantly. In exploring the metaphorical components of your physical symptoms, it can be helpful to follow and describe, as accurately as possible, the sensations that you are experiencing. For example, if you are experiencing a severe headache, how would you describe the pain; what image would you give it? Is it the incessant pounding of a hammer, or a tight band around your head? Is it dull, or sharp like an ice pick? Is it an earthquake, come to settle in your head? Or maybe a wild heavy metal drummer! Does it have color, texture, or rhythm? Let your unconscious present any metaphor or image to describe the pain, no matter how fanciful, irrational or outlandish it may seem. Then, reflect on this image or other descriptor of your pain, and explore it as a possible symbol of some other dimension or process within your life.

Let’s say you have a “splitting” headache. Is there some way in which you are split? Perhaps you are unaware that you have two very different viewpoints on a particular subject. If your headache is like an ice pick driven through your skull, why an ice pick? What in your life is like a piece of cold, hard metal piercing your thoughts? Or, perhaps, is your thinking so frozen, rigid or cold that one would need an ice pick to get through? What might be trying to get through? If it is like an earthquake, how might a major shift of perspective or world view, be trying to take place in your life? If it is a tight band around your head, do you limit yourself through your thinking and beliefs in some way? If it is a heavy metal drummer, is he happy, angry or out-of-control? Have a dialogue with him in your imagination. What does he have to tell you? What advice would he give you? Working with your body symptoms in this way requires a certain playfulness, receptivity and openness of mind. However, the things you learn can be transforming, not only of your life and relationships, but frequently of your pain as well. Allow your un-

conscious and spontaneous imagination help you to discover the messages contained in your symptoms through imagery and dialogue. Another method for gaining insight from your symptoms and illnesses is called “amplification.” In amplification you, paradoxically, try to increase the intensity of a particular sensation or movement rather than trying to lessen it. Dr. Mindell documented that pain sensations have a certain threshold at which they switch “channels” to a different sensory output. So, for example, the physical perception of pain is part of the body’s proprioceptive channel, and as the limits of this channel are reached, the channel switches to a visual, auditory, kinesthetic or what Mindell calls the “world” channel (i.e., synchronistic events). Thus, the severe pain in your lower back may, if pushed to its limit rather than medicated away, transform from an excruciating physical sensation to the image of a snake trapped in a cage (visual channel) or cause you to scream out like a woman giving birth (kinesthetic channel). During these shifts, the secret process behind the pain is unlocked/uncovered, and the pain typically decreases. Now that the pain is in a new channel it can be worked symbolically or with movement, in order to glean its deeper message. In the examples given above, the person might be encouraged to dialogue with the snake or imagine letting it out of the cage and observing what it does. Or he/she might be encouraged to move like the snake, or to continue crying out as if giving birth, describing and following the experiences wherever they lead. In this hypothetical example we might surmise that beneath this back pain may be a transformative energy seeking to be uncaged and birthed into the world. Here is another example. A man in his sixties experienced a rapid onset of tremors in his hands. Although the particular array of his symptoms, medical history and test results did not place his illness neatly into any neurological disorder, he received the tentative diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Within
two months his tremors were so severe that they interfered with his ability to write, to do the woodworking he once enjoyed and to feed himself without spilling his food. The progression of his illness made him more and more depressed, prompting his doctor to have him see a psychologist. His psychologist suggested that they try working with his symptoms to see what might be gleaned. During one session, the man was encouraged to amplify his tremors, making his hands shake even more. He did so and exclaimed that he would have no control whatsoever in his life if his hands and body shook that bad. Here we are given a clue as to the core of his problem. This man’s personality was characterized by a tendency to try to control others, especially his wife and children. The psyche used his hands, often considered an extension of the ego, as a way to confront his controlling nature. The more he tried to consciously control his tremors, the more he actually shook. Conversely, as his therapy helped him to let go of his desires and efforts to control, his tremors decreased and he was able to feed himself again. This case illustrates not only the value of working with and learning from our body symptoms, it also reveals the paradoxical truth that the more we try to control life, the less control we actually have. The more that we surrender to our life’s path, the more control we are given. CHECK OUT ALL OF DR. DRYMALSKI’S PREVIOUS ARTICLES AT HBMAG.COM References: 1. Mindell, Arnold. HERBS&SPICES
Hopped up on Hops Written By Allison Prater
H
ops are commonly known as a staple ingredient in one of summer’s favorite beverages: ice cold beer. The French and Germans used hops in their brews since the ninth century, when they discovered its value as a preservative. Beer brewed with hops could be kept in storage longer before selling. At first, the addition of this herb was not well received as it has a bitter flavor. Its medicinal qualities, such as aiding in digestion and relaxing effects, soon made it a favorite among brewers. Today, it is considered the primary herb for the brewing of beer. Hops have a long history as a medicinal and culinary herb. Traditionally, this long, vine perennial was used as a nerve tonic and sleep aid. This sedative quality of the herb may contribute to beer’s ability to make the drinker drowsy. It has similar qualities of valerian root, and can be used in much the same way; valerian is stronger as a muscle relaxant and pain reliever, compared to hops. Today, hops are still widely used as a sedative for insomnia, stress and tension. The fruit of the plant looks like a small green pine cone, which is much softer and most effective when freshly dried. Tucked inside the leaf bracket are the tiny fruit and a golden pollen-like substance rich in lupulin, the active constituent of hops. Because hops is so rich in volatile oils, they are one of the traditional herbs used in sleep or dream pillows. The volatile oils are released by the pressure of sleeping on the pillow and affect the brain directly through the olfactory center. Abraham Lincoln is reported to have used such a pillow. See further instructions for your own do-it-yourself dream pillow at the end of this article. Studies show that hops also have antiseptic properties and, when applied externally as a hot poultice, are said to reduce inflammations of skin. It is less known that hops have estrogenic properties. Hops are excellent for regulating and balancing hormonal production, especially due to stress, in women. For example, it is often used for stimulating milk production in new mothers. Hops estrogenic effect is a fairly recent rediscovery. When hops were first cultivated in large amounts for the brewing industry, female hops pickers noticed their menstrual cycles arrived prematurely and that the young girls picking the hops started their cycles earlier. At the same time, male pickers were noticing a lessoning of their sexual desire. Hops began to develop a reputation as a sexual stimulant for women and a sexual depressant for men. This observation led to the discovery that hops contain high concentrations of plant hormones that have estrogen like effects on the female system. For women, the For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
effects of using hops to regulate and balance hormonal action, is quite remarkable. The hormonal effects lessen as the plant dries; it is best used fresh or in a tincture. Opinions divide as to whether the hormone suppressing factors of hops effect men that consume them in beer. Hops are easy to grow in your own back yard. A perennial vine that grows prolifically, hops bears fruit in its third year of life. Pliny, the ancient Greek naturalist, grew hops in his garden and enjoyed the fresh young shoots and leaves of the plant as an early spring vegetable. Whether for eating, drinking or sleeping, hops are an excellent addition to your natural healing cabinet. Make your own dream pillow: Fold a piece of 8” X 8” fabric in half and sew two sides together, leaving one side open for stuffing. Soft fabrics such as cotton or velvet are recommended. Traditionally, the pillow covering was embroidered with moons and stars. Stuff the pillow with a dried mixture of: 4 parts mugwort (an herb that encourages dreaming)

AGING PETS | PART THREE Submitted By Sugarland Ranch
W
hat happens to aging or ill pets that are homeless and are not readily adoptable? The answer is often times unsettling. However, a local organization is going above and beyond for the lost or unwanted pets of Reno and its surrounding area. Sugarland Ranch is a community based, non-profit organization located in the North Valley of Reno. It is situated in a picturesque, magical 52 acres that overlook the Sierra Nevada range. Founded in 2001, Robyn Roth and Mack McKinley created a no-kill, small animal sanctuary that coordinates and collaborates with many other rescue groups in the community. Sugarland Ranch houses several programs, including: • The Senior Dog and Cat Retirement Home and Adoption Center accept older dogs & cats that are at high risk of euthanasia because they are difficult to adopt out. Dogs and cats that enter this program come from local shelters. • Military Deployment Program cares for our military personnel’s dogs and cats without charge while they are supporting us in a war zone. • PerPETual Care Program allows pet owners to make arrangements for lifetime care of their pets, should the owner predecease them. Often times, a pet owner passes away and there is no-one willing or able to care for the pet; at which point, the pet ends up in the shelter system and becomes at risk of euthanasia. • Mastiff Rescue Program works with shelters to help these dogs either find new homes or remain at Sugarland permanently. • Honey Bear’s Dog and Cat Boarding is a first class dog and cat boarding kennel, which is open to the public. The boarding program provides financial support for the other programs. • Sugarland’s Pet Memorial Website is a place for humans to memorialize their beloved pets and thereby relieve grief and the emptiness feelings.
All of the dogs and cats at Sugarland enjoy the fantastic open spaces, loving staff and fresh, home-cooked food on a daily basis. Robyn bakes fresh chickens daily and debones them, surrounded by the dogs she loves. She receives much joy from their facial expressions, the massive drooling of the Mastiffs and of course the enjoyment each and every pet gets from only the best foods, supplements and Veterinarian prescribed medications. Sugarland works closely with many local Veterinarians to ensure that the senior cats and dogs, with chronic pain issues, are adequately managed for maximum comfort. Volunteers are always welcome. The pets that remain at Sugarland truly enjoy the extra attention! Volunteers help with hiking in the hills with the dogs that are able, like Mr. Hunter, a military deployment guest pet. They also help with shorter walks with the older furry friends. Other volunteer activities include bathing, brushing or just “hanging out” with the pets. Volunteers also help with donations, transporting pets to and from veterinary appointments, social outings, fundraising events and a variety of administrative tasks. Volunteers enhance the lives of Sugarland’s program animals in many immeasurable ways. For animal lovers, Sugarland Ranch is a great place to visit and spend some volunteer hours. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Robyn at robyn@sugarlandranch.org or by phone at 800.713.7177.

Bladder Infections Written By Sherril Jones
B
ladder infections are typically caused by a type of bacteria called Escherichia coli (E. coli). This bacterium is normally found in the intestines. When E. coli is present in the intestines, it results in inflammation of the bladder. Chlamydia can also cause bladder infections. When fecal matter or vaginal secretions are introduced to the bladder it causes contamination. How does the infection start? It can happen due to sexual activity, certain contraceptives, pregnancy and possibly diabetes. Food allergies have also been linked to bladder infections, if not properly eliminated from one’s diet. When a bladder infection is apparent, it creates an extreme urgency to urinate. It can also be very painful, with a burning
sensation. A person might feel as if their bladder must be continually emptied, even when it is not needed. The unpleasant odor and possible cloudiness in the urination also indicate an infection. There are natural solutions that might remedy this situation, before and during a bladder infection.
Other ideas to consider • Stay away from caffeine • If food allergies are apparent, eliminate simple sugars, processed foods and any other foods that cause sensitivity. This will aggravate the infection.
The following herbs can also be combined and used in a tea
• Wear cotton underwear.
• Cranberry or Blueberry juice prevents bacteria (E. coli) from sticking to the walls of the bladder. Drink 24 ounces a day and break it up into 3 servings. The best way to drink it is pure and unsweetened. Capsule form is another option. • Drink plenty of water, purified is best. It will flush the system of toxins. • Chamomile helps calm the bladder. • Chickweed aids in reducing inflammation.
Control Your Bladder • Bladder Leakage • Pelvic Pain • Pelvic Organ Prolapse • Post Breast Surgery Care • Painful Intercourse • Overactive Bladder • Decreased Orgasm • Tailbone Pain
• Echinacea helps to rebuild t-cells when the body is under fire. A valuable alternative to all antibiotics.
• Empty the bladder before and after sexual intercourse and other exercise. • Wash the genital area after intercourse. Please note that some bladder infections are more severe than others. Make sure to consult a physician when needed. References: 1. James F. Balch, M.D., Phyllis A. Balch, c.n.c., Prescription for nutritional Healing 2nd edition 1997 2. KEEPING A HEALTHY WATCH on our kids Written By Tony Jensen
D
o kids really need healthcare? What is appropriate healthcare for Kids? What can you do in your everyday life to assist in your child’s overall health? An alarming cry for help is coming from our children; because many of their “hidden” healthcare needs are being ignored. Recently, Dr. David Katz of Yale University School of Public Health expressed that, for the first time, we are living in a generation where parents will outlive their children… a frightening wake-up call for society as a whole. We are being commissioned to improve the quality of healthcare for our children. But how do we begin? First: Develop a partnership with your child’s healthcare provider early on in the child’s life. Commit to “well” visits and educate yourself of the things that your child needs to stay active, healthy and well. Second: Introduce EXERCISE into your child’s daily activities, i.e. running, playing hard and walking. Current studies reveal that today’s children are not getting sufficient exercise at school. Their after school “activity” often consists of playing video games, watching television or sitting for long periods of time in front of the computer. Exercise is the key to the formation of healthy bones and strong muscular structure. Surprisingly, studies found that children from four
to six, who have high motion and physical activity levels, have hip bone density 12 percent higher than inactive children. Third: Parents should closely monitor the EATING habits of their children. Proper diet and nutrition are necessary in maintaining optimum health. Kids have a higher metabolism and “turn over rate of repair;” therefore, it is essential to build their bodies with good, wholesome foods. Mentor your child with proper nutritional information, encouraging him/her to choose fresh, wholesome foods, as opposed to processed, fast, and packaged foods. Fourth: Encourage WATER to become your child’s “beverage of choice.” Water affects the cooling system, stimulates brain activity, promotes healthier skin and aids in maintaining a normal blood pressure range. A good rule of thumb to follow is: daily water intake should be a ½ the body’s weight in ounces. In other words, a 100 pound child should consume 50 oz. of water daily. Fifth: The NERVOUS SYSTEM is one of the most overlooked aspects of a child’s overall health. Studies conclude that 80 percent of all births can result in Nerve Impingement Syndrome (NIS), which is interference in the communication between the brain and the body. Research conducted by the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA) indicates that 40 percent of all children will fall on their heads by one year of age, and on the average, children between two to five years of age will experience over 200 falls. By 12 years, a child will experience over 1,000 spinal traumas. Whether through the birthing process, sporting activities, falling or simply playing, children can experience NIS. A chiropractor can examine your child and determine the health of his/her nervous system. For parents, grandparents and caregivers, this is a call-to-action. We are asked to be watchful of the “hidden” healthcare problems of our children. Remember, it is better to fix health problems early on in life, than trying to repair a bigger problem later on. By creating a partnership with our child’s healthcare providers and teaching our children healthful habits, we are giving them a better chance of living a long and healthy life. INGREDIENTWATCH
Kind Bar
Written By Lissie Lyles
K
ind Bars, conceived in 2003 by Daniel Lubetzky, a social entrepreneur that TIME Magazine recognized in 2009 among “25 Responsibility Pioneers,” was made with the intention of being an elusive snack that is wholesome, convenient, tasty and healthy, all in the same bite. To top it off, five percent of proceeds from the sale of “Kind Bars” are donated to Peace Works, a “not-only-for-profit company that fosters economic cooperation among neighbors striving to co-exist in conflict regions worldwide,” as stated on the Kind Bar website. Peace Works sets out to bring neighbors in conflict regions to work together and shatter cultural stereotypes that dehumanize people. Peace Works launched several award-winning healthy food products and its joint ventures continue to bring people together today. A healthy snack that is kind to both the body and the community at large is a tall order to say the least. Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients in Kind Bar’s “Sesame Peanut with Chocolate” bar to see how kind it truly is. Peanuts: Rich in nutrients, providing over 30 essential nutrients and phytonutrients. They are a good source of niacin, folate, fiber, magnesium, vitamin E, manganese and phosphorus. They also are naturally free of trans-fats and sodium, and contain about 25% protein (a higher proportion than in any true nut). Milk Chocolate: contains the following: Sugar: That infamous sweetener we all know and love. Excessive consumption of sugar is associated with increased incidences of type 2 diabetes, obesity and tooth decay. Palm Kernel Oil: Edible plant oil that is derived from the kernel of the oil palm, Elaeis Guineensis, and extracted from the pulp of the oil palm. Palm kernel oil is more saturated than palm oil and comparable to coconut oil. It is high in saturated fatty acids, about 80 percent. Like all vegetable oils, this palm-derived oil does not contain cholesterol (found in unrefined animal fats), although saturated fat intake increases both LDL and HDL cholesterol. Palm kernel oil is a common cooking ingredient; its increasing use in the commercial food industry throughout the world is buoyed by its lower cost, the high oxidative stability (saturation) of the refined product when used for frying and its lack of cholesterol and transfatty acids, both viewed as being heart-healthy attributes. Skim Milk Powder: a manufactured dairy product made by evaporating milk to dryness. One purpose of drying milk is to preserve it; milk powder has a far longer shelf life than liquid milk and does not need to be refrigerated, due to its low moisture content. Milk powders contain all 20 standard amino acids and are For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
high in soluble vitamins and minerals. Commercial milk powders are reported to contain oxysterols (oxidized cholesterol) in higher amounts than in fresh milk. The oxysterol free radicals are suspect of being initiators of atherosclerotic plaques (plaque that builds up on the walls of the arteries, contributing to heart disease). Cocoa powder: also known as cocoa solids: the low-fat component of chocolate. When sold as an end product, it may also be called cocoa powder, cocoa, and cacao. In contrast, the fatty component of chocolate is cocoa butter. The separation of the two components may be accomplished by a press, or by the Broma Process. The resulting powder, sold as natural cocoa powder, is more reddish than the traditional “chocolate” color, and has a relatively low PH, causing a sour, acidic taste. Cocoa solids are what lend a chocolate bar its characteristic flavor and color. Cocoa solids are what contain most of the antioxidants associated with chocolate. Accordingly, health professionals recommend consuming chocolate in forms that are high in cocoa solids while low in cocoa butter. Also contains: Sesame seeds: The seeds are exceptionally rich in iron, magnesium, manganese, copper and calcium (90 mg per tablespoon for unshelled seeds, 10 mg for hulled), and contain vitamins B-1 and E. They contain lignans, including unique content of sesamin, which are phytoestrogens with antioxidant and anticancer properties. Honey: a sweet food made by honey bees using nectar from flowers. Honey is a mixture of sugars and other compounds. With respect to carbohydrates, honey is mainly fructose (about 38.5 percent) and glucose (about 31.0 percent). Honey’s remaining carbohydrates include maltose, sucrose and other complex carbohydrates. Honey contains trace amounts of several vitamins and minerals. As with all nutritive sweeteners, honey is mostly sugars and is not a significant source of vitamins or minerals. Honey also contains tiny amounts of several compounds thought to function as antioxidants, but the specific composition of any batch of honey depends on the flowers available to the bees that produced the honey. Glucose: occurs naturally in human blood sugar. Is usually derived from grape or corn sugars and used as a sweetener. It is traditionally used to sweeten processed foods, such as sandwich meats and sausages. It is often used as an extender in maple syrups. It has no known toxicity. Puffed rice: usually made by steam heating rice kernels under high pressure, though the method of manufacture varies widely.

MicroNeedling with DermaRoller™:
A Natural Method for Rejuvenating Skin
Written By César A. Maúrtua, MD, Anesthesiologist and Integrative Medical Practitioner
M
icroneedling is a simple, relatively new concept that can make the skin look younger by reducing lines, scars and discoloration. Applying tiny micro-punctures to the skin with fine needles stimulates the body’s natural healing response, promoting the proliferation of skin cells and the production of collagen. It is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, but there is significantly more to it than that. The microneedling concept was conceived in the 1990s in Germany, where the devices are now manufactured under the Dermaroller™ trademark. A Dermaroller consists of surgical stainless steel microneedles that are precisely imbedded in a small drum-like device that looks much like a tiny lawn aerator. It was originally created for medical indications, but other uses for the device were subsequently identified and imitators of the concept soon followed. The Medical Dermaroller comes in several sizes, to treat a variety of skin conditions. Studies show that it reduces acne, scarring, stretch marks, oiliness, hyperpigmentation, cellulite and enlarged pores. Because the microneedles of the Dermaroller penetrate the outer layer of the skin, the procedure can dramatically increase the effectiveness of skin treatments such as topical hormone medications, serums, creams and gels. The Medical Dermaroller procedure requires a topical anesthesia due to the depth at which the microneedles of the medical device penetrates the skin. These devices are designed for single treatments only, by a qualified medical provider who has been trained in their use. Around four to five days after undergoing the Medical Dermaroller procedure,
the client begins follow-up treatments with a Home Dermaroller, which helps to accelerate, stimulate, thicken and rejuvenate the skin. The Home Dermaroller has a shallower penetration, so it does not require topical anesthesia and this phase can be done at home by the client. The client simply rolls the Home Dermaroller on the skin two to three times per week, as instructed, to accomplish a particular goal. Generally, the client should only feel a prickly sensation and there is rarely any pain. The Home Dermaroller is easily cleaned and, depending on the amount of skin area that is being covered, can be reused up to 150 times over the next year or so. To date, more than 275,000 medical cosmetic procedures were performed worldwide without complications. With appropriate training, safeguards and preparation, the Dermaroller is a safe and effective tool that can help persons of all ages, complexions and races to achieve dramatic results in skin restoration. Dermaroller™ services are offered at Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa in Reno. References: 1. Banga, AK et al. PRODUCTREVIEW Ground Breaking New Skin Care Line
I
Written by Tim Salyer n the fight against damaged and aging skin, TRUESCIENCE skin care line emerges as a powerful, safe and natural way to a youthful and vibrant appearance. Kim Lytle commented on her first trial with TrueScience, “It is a light, non-greasy lotion that blends in very easily.” She has sensitive skin and was looking for a suitable moisturizer that would not create break-outs or a heavy, suffocating feeling. “It [TrueScience] provides the dewy, hydrated feeling I’ve been looking for, for a long time. All the while, it adds another layer of protection against the arid Arizona climate,” Lytle said. It is no secret that our skin is under constant attack. Sun exposure, environmental toxins, wind, cold, and chemicals in our food and water are ever-threatening. Many of the ingredients in our cosmetics and body care products that are supposed to make us look and feel better are actually harmful. Fortunately, LifeVantage developed TrueScience, a groundbreaking and unique skin care line based on natural and effective ingredients. Created by the company that brought you Protandim, TrueScience is scientifically-based and protects the skin from the bombardment of factors that contribute to aging and the symptoms of unhealthy skin. HYDRATION/MOISTURIZING: TrueScience features a Lamellar Phase Emulsion System that forms a liquid emulsion barrier for superior moisturizing without a thick, oily feel. It also contains extracts of sandalwood, phellodendron bark and barley, all of which deliver exotic fatty acids to retain the body’s natural moisture and produce a high-end moisturizing effect. Sodium hyaluronate
is another important ingredient. It is a superior moisture-binding agent that can balance moisture levels at the surface of the skin. TONING/BRIGHTENING: The turmeric extract in TrueScience is specially modified to remove the majority of yellow compounds, without reducing the effectiveness of its potent curcuminiods. Studies show that curcuminiods produce a gentle skin lightening that evens pigmentation issues. Additionally, the leucojum aestivum bulb extract slows the spread of melanocytes, which contribute to uneven skin coloring. COLLAGEN RENEWAL/SKIN REPAIR: The polypeptides in TrueScience promote collagen and elastin production, good for skin renewal and support. Cytokines, derivative from whey protein and vitamins C and E, also boost collagen production. ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION: Several ingredients neutralize free radicals and offer overall protection from them. Green tea extract, turmeric, ginseng root, yeast extract, aloe vera extract and vitamins C and E all provide a wide array of antioxidant support to prevent and repair damaged skin cells and tissues. WRINKLES/FINE LINES: Palm peptides and leucojum asetivum bulb extract help to visibly reduce signs of wrinkles and fine lines. They also promote thicker epidermis and dermis layers of the skin, for less transparency and improved tone and texture. ALL-INCLUSIVE: Unlike many skin care lines, TrueScience antiaging cream eliminates the need for an extra eye cream, due to its wide-ranging benefits. LIPID REJUVENATION: TrueScience delivers multiple ingredients, including sandalwood oil, phellodendron bark extract, barley extract and a proprietary blend of glycolipids, soy phtosterols and hyaluronic acid, to mimic the naturally occurring lipid structure in the skin and to retain the body’s own moisturizing lipids. any young women are accustomed to making the awkward trip to the OB/GYN year after year for their annual exam, often confused with just the Pap smear. The annual exam includes a manual breast screening for cancer, a pelvic exam to check for abnormalities or inflammation and it includes the Pap smear (when the speculum is used). However, new guidelines for determining when women should get Pap smears have changed. Recently, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) suggests women wait until age 21 to begin cervical cancer screenings, regardless of when a woman becomes sexually active, dispelling the idea of needing to be tested every year. The new rule suggests that women in their 20’s, who have normal Pap smear results for three consecutive years, be tested every two years. Women in their 30’s can now wait every three years. Some OB/GYNs suggest that women should wait until they are 25 before the initial screening, although Planned Parenthood is only waiting until women are 21. There are many other reasons why the changes are beneficial, including the new recommendations being more cost-effective, with fewer exams. Testing every couple years and starting cervical cancer screenings later may reduce unnecessary anxiety in young women. While the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) affects many women yearly, studies show that 90 percent of cervical abnormalities in adolescents clear up on their own within a few years. Young women’s immune systems are strong enough to fight off HPV before it turns into cancer. Also, according to ACOG, 50 percent of those diagnosed with cervical cancer each year have never been screened

before. This proves that it isn’t young women who are most at-risk for cervical cancer, but women who have never been tested. Additionally, postponing initial screenings and screening less often also protects young women from potential future pregnancy implications. There is evidence that screening before age 25 leads to many false positives, thus resulting in unnecessary treatments. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) is a procedure patients go through to remove pre-cancerous tissue caused by HPV. LEEP can essentially weaken the cervix. It is estimated that one in 18 women who have undergone this procedure will give birth prematurely. Because Pap smears test strictly for cervical cancer, it is still important for women who are sexually active to continue scheduling regular visits to their gynecologist. Pap smears are only a small fraction of what is performed in an OB/GYN health center. Making annual appointments for gynecological visits will give women of all ages a chance to discuss their reproductive health and discuss contraceptive options or Hormone Replacement Therapy, test for STDs and review safe sex procedures, among other concerns. Cost-friendly health centers, such as Planned Parenthood, offer these services at an affordable rate so that women of any age can receive the health care and information they need. Hydrating vs. Moisturizing Rethinking the One-Size-Fits-All Skin Care Regimen Written By Terri Arucha
C
leanse, tone and moisturize. It is a process that skin care companies have ingrained in our minds. While most people simply accept this three-step formula as gospel, others seek a regimen that fits their specific needs. With an emphasis on correction, skin care professionals and their products work with the skin’s natural physiology to restore balance and encourage healthy, normal hydration, free of unnecessary assistance. After all, if everyone’s skin is different, how could one method fit all? It all begins with moisture balance. In normal skin, the sebaceous glands, which are oil-producing glands that naturally lubricate the skin, maintain a healthy level of sebum, or natural oil. This serves to keep the skin properly hydrated by preventing excessive water loss or absorption. Marked by a supple feel and moist (but not greasy) appearance, normal skin gains little, if anything, from added moisture. But what about other skin types? While oily, dry and sensitive skin types can and do benefit from topical hydrators, a moisturizer can only do so much and is not a solution to any condition by itself. If your skin is properly balanced, it really shouldn’t need a regular moisturizer. Moisturizers generally work in two ways. Many prevent water loss by coating the skin with an oil-based substance to trap moisture in; essentially replicating what a healthy sebum balance already does. Common among store-bought brands, staple ingredients include petroleum, mineral oil and lanolin. While somewhat effective, such products run the risk of clogged pores and contact irritation due to their oil content. Other products attract moisture to the skin using hydrophilic (water-friendly) substances like glycerin, lactic acid and certain vitamins. In addition to replacing moisture already lost, products containing these ingredients are enjoyed by more skin types for their non-greasy, non-irritating properties. Topical hydrators should support the skin’s natural hydration process rather than supplementing moisture, which sidesteps the real issue at hand, the condition. A moisturizer is only useful if it effec-

tively targets the source of a skin condition. If you’re constantly applying and reapplying moisture, you’re only covering up your skin condition, not working toward correcting it. Consider chronically dry skin. When combined with a condition-specific skin care plan, a moisturizer can play an invaluable role in restoring epidermal equilibrium. By helping your skin return to normal sebaceous activity, a moisturizer can help restore past damage, soothe inflammation and encourage healthy hydration in budding, new skin cells. However, it can only help alleviate the skin condition if it works with other elements of the program, effectively as a whole. Used alone or as part of a one-size-fits-all regimen, moisturizers do little more than mask a symptom of a much bigger problem. That bigger problem could stem from a number of things. From poor dietary and lifestyle choices to infrequent exfoliation and UV over-exposure, skin conditions arise in different people for different reasons. Dry skin arises from distress or damage to the skin’s lipid barrier, a permeable outer layer of fatty substances that shields skin cells from harmful elements while allowing in moisture and nutrients. Combined with a decrease in sebum production, this structural deterioration exposes skin cells to external threats and contributes to what is known as trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), as cells become dehydrated and the skin visibly starts to suffer. While a moisturizer may offer temporary relief, until the source of the cell disruption is isolated and corrected, dry skin will continue to be a problem. Therefore, the goal should not be to replace the skin’s natural hydration process, but to regain balance. A skin care program should focus on correcting the problem at hand. Moisturizers play a part, just as cleansers and balancers do. Together, their goal is to correct the core of a condition and return the skin to a normal state. It is important to consult with a skin care professional. They will help determine the source of your skin condition and also create a treatment strategy customized for your skin. Do not selfdiagnose, as it generally leads to a trial-and-error approach for many consumers, often at the expense of time, money and skin health. Skin care professionals know the skin best and determine skin conditions on a case-by-case basis. They know which steps are necessary to improve the overall health of your skin. References: 1. HOW TO PREPARE: 1. Cover the chicken with 1/2 to 1 inch of water or organic chicken broth. Bring to a boil and reduce to a bare simmer. At that point, partially cover the sauce pan, simmer for 10 min. 2. Turn off the heat, cover and leave chicken to finish cooking in the hot broth for 10 to 15 min. 3. Slice and cut the chicken into chunks for salad or leave in slices for sandwiches. 4. For the Salad: Place chicken chunks in a bowl. Add the dried cranberries, apple, onion and cheese chunks and nuts. 5. In a small bowl, mix together the lime juice, safflower oil, nuts and cumin, salt & pepper to taste. Pour over the chicken mixture. 6. Cover and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hrs. Serve on romaine lettuce leaves or cut a tomato in 4 sections, but do not cut through, spread the sections and add the chicken salad. This is yummy and easy to prepare.

Written By Cindy Sult, RN, BSN hotofacial, or collagen stimulation, is performed by a laser (Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) or a similar laser type device, an IPL machine (Intense Pulse Light). In order to understand the benefits of laser treatment, one should be aware of a few skin basics, such as the changes that occur with aging and environmental factors. Healthy skin is smooth, soft and evenly toned. As we age, our skin becomes lax and we lose collagen, which is the backbone of our skin. We suddenly have wrinkles around our eyes, mouth and other areas of the face, caused by facial muscles. These wrinkles are called static wrinkles. Suddenly our skin is no longer smooth and is discolored by sun damage. This can show up in the form of broken capillaries or sunspots. Suddenly we look in the mirror and ask our selves, “Who is this person I am looking at.” A wise woman once stated that as we age, we also lose our vision and this is to protect us from becoming frightened when we look in the mirror. However, don’t lose all hope; there are ways to help transform your skin to a more youthful appearance. What is collagen stimulation and how can it help me? Remember that collagen is what keeps our skin tight and looking young; the best kind of collagen is your

From Page 30, Photofacial own. How can you stimulate your own collagen? You can stimulate your skin’s collagen in the dermal layer of your skin with laser treatments, using appropriate devices and wave lengths. In short, the laser heats the dermal layer of the skin causing heat damage. Heat damage is particularly good at stimulating collagen growth. This stimulates the fibroblasts to produce collagen, which gives the skin more elasticity and plump. This helps fill in small wrinkles and fine lines. It also helps treat and even the tone of the skin. Many of the small, broken capillaries that you can see are closed down and fade away. This type of laser treatment is non-ablative, meaning it does not remove (ablate) the top layers of skin. Which means there is very little down time and you may not notice a difference immediately. However, once the collagen is stimulated it continues to produce more collagen from six weeks up to six months. The amount of treatments a person needs and the results they receive are individual; each individual responds differently. It may take ten years off of your appearance or it might stop any more aging; both are great results! Most people feel the difference after only one treatment. They continue to get better results with a progressive program and schedule maintenance treatments as needed. References:

Women Food and God
An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything By Geneen Roth
Reviewed by June Milligun for Healthy Beginnings Magazine
G
eneen Roth states that, “No matter how sophisticated or wealthy or broke or enlightened you are, how you eat tells all.” She believes that what and how you eat is inseparable from your core beliefs about being alive. She explains that our relationship with food is an exact mirror of our feelings about love, fear, anger, meaning and transformation. The basic theme is about going beyond both the feelings and the food, which takes us deeper into realms of spirit and soul. Despite the title, rather than bringing a traditional idea of God into the discussion, she focuses on how our own spirituality and relationship with our self can clarify and inform our relationship with food. Since adolescence, Roth lost and gained more than one thousand pounds. Then one day, on the verge of suicide, she stopped trying to fix, deprive and shame herself. She began questioning her beliefs and started trusting her body. She realized that instead of trying to fix her eating problems. She needed to use them in order to see within herself, so that she could grow and heal and create a permanent end to her struggle with weight and self-image. Roth authored many books on eating problems over the years. Some of the titles include When Food Is Love, Breaking
Ask Yourself. . . Do You Have the Right
COACHING STYLE BASED ON COMMITMENT, MOTIVATION, TEAMWORK & Offering:
Free from Emotional Eating, When You Eat at the Refrigerator, Pull up a Chair and Feeding the Hungry Heart. She also holds seven-day intensive retreats for women with eating problems. After more than three decades of studying, teaching and writing about what drives our compulsion with food, she created a process that works for many women. For instance, an important awareness for all of us to notice is what she calls THE VOICE. She is referring to that voice in your head that continues to repeat the old judgments and learned ideas about food, how you should behave and what you are supposed to look like. A large part of that comes from family or the media; some of our dysfunctional programming comes from our youth-and-beauty obsessed culture. When seven-year-old American girls are dieting, there is something seriously wrong. The author is refreshingly honest in describing how destructive the dieting industry is to women. She feels that it is important for us to know how we are being managed by a multibillion dollar industry. This book definitely stands apart from the crowd of books on overeating, self-help, dieting, eating styles, etc. The message the author offers is one of mindfulness, presence, self-love and feeling your feelings. As you read through the book, you might identify with the childhood programming and frustrations of the women in Roth’s retreats, to the point where one little comment will enlighten Formula? you and bring on an “aha” moment. This book is well worth reading if you have INDIVIDUAL GROWTH food challenges of any kind. A Woman’s Moon Written By Jessica Edge, ND
A
ncient cultures viewed the female body as sacred, an extension of the life force responsible for natural rhythms, rebirth and renewal. These cultures also recognized a connection between a woman’s menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle, and even referred to women during their menses as being “on their moon.” Is there a correlation between women’s menstrual cycles and the cycles of the moon? Can hormone balance be achieved naturally by restoring this rhythm in modern women? Moon Cycles From the annual changing of the seasons to the monthly phases of the moon, nature’s rhythms are simple and predictable. Every month, the moon transitions through its four phases in 29.5 days. Likewise, the female menstrual cycle tends to be between 28-30 days in length. The moon regulates the movement of fluids on the earth; it regulates the ebb and flow of the ocean tides and may also regulate the menstrual flow of fertile women. Studies show that women who have cycles 29.5 days in length tend to menstruate during the new moon. This suggests that women in rhythm with nature ovulate around the full moon and that their hormone levels are changing during the waxing and waning of the moon. Hormone Cycles Women’s bodies follow a cyclical pattern managed by the hormones estrogen, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The beginning of a woman’s cycle is marked by the first day of her menstrual period. The first half of a woman’s cycle is called the follicular phase and is regulated by estrogen. During this phase, a healthy lining is building in the uterus and an egg is maturing in the ovary in preparation for a potential pregnancy. When hormone levels reach their highest mid-cycle, the ovary is stimulated to release an egg.
Ovulation is the transition to the second half of the cycle, called the luteal phase, which is influenced by progesterone. At the end of the second half of the cycle, if a pregnancy has not occurred, the lining is shed and the cycle repeats itself. In addition to the hormonal changes that occur during the follicular and luteal phases, there are mental and emotional changes noted during a woman’s cycle. The first half of the cycle represents productivity and creativity and is a good time for women to take on new projects or complete challenging tasks. The second half of the cycle is a time for reflection, introspection and personal growth. When a woman is in alignment with nature, she is balanced on many levels. Unfortunately, modern women are challenged with environmental exposures and societal pressures that women in ancient times never had to face. Hormone-disrupting toxins and prescription hormones, in addition to increased stress levels and decreased awareness of the female body, all interfere with the natural rhythm. Women today are suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS), painful periods, infertility, perimenopausal complaints and migraine headaches and are at increased risk for female cancers. Women who utilize natural medicine to regulate their hormones and detoxify their bodies often find that they do indeed shift their cycles closer to a natural rhythm. Women are returning to nature for hormonal and emotional healing as well as to reclaim the earthly rhythm their bodies are intended to follow. References: 1. Conner, Kristina, ND. YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR PAST
NEW RESEARCH SHOWS HOW
Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

y using certain acupressure points and a few descriptive words, in less than a minute, you can remove the negative emotions from any traumatic scene or memory you have ever experienced. As the remembered scene changes, the emotions change. At the same time, the place where that trauma has settled within your body changes as well. You can actually feel it leave your body. Many scientists are now aware that all traumas settle in the cells somewhere. Most massage therapists have had the experience of a client breaking out into tears or suddenly recalling something that happened decades ago, with no apparent reason. It seems strange, but as that part of the body is massaged, sometimes the memory or emotions return. Research at Harvard Medical School and the University of Ohio showed that the part of our brain we call “limbic” is directly connected to our meridian system, along which 400 acupoints reside. These points are used in both acupuncture and acupressure to heal, soothe, remove pain and reduce anxiety and stress. This new procedure uses the most potent acupoints, while adding a new twist: the

right phraseology. The result is quick, astounding and long-lasting. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) was the first combination of acupressure and language, used for the purpose of healing, that has become widely known in the West. No one really knew why it worked, but people who use it regularly know that it is a powerful stress reducer. Research also revealed that the fightor-flight part of our brain seems to be responsible for our holding onto the emotions associated with the traumas we experience as in, “I’d better remember that, it might save my life someday.” The problem is that we do not really need to vividly remember most of the sadnesses and traumas we’ve experienced. Maybe in saber tooth tiger days it was beneficial to remember those, but not today. The problem is that part of our brain is still functioning like it did thousands of years ago. It stored all of the traumas we experienced since infancy, and is dutifully giving those emotions back to us, as a warning, when anything happens that is vaguely similar to a past trauma. As a result of research on the meridian system and its brain and neurological connections, it is now possible to remove the negative emotions from any scene or memory you have ever experienced. By massaging only a few acupoints and by stating only a few simple descriptive words, the original scene or memory changes or disappears. The emotions that were associated with that scene then change or disappear, and the place where it has been impacting your body changes or disappears; in under one minute. Do you still have the memory? Vaguely, but it does not

seem important now. Do you still have the emotions that were connected to the memory? No. What do you feel in your body? Relief and stillness. Does this work on any scene, any memory? Yes, if you want to get rid of the negative emotions associated with that scene or memory. Whole books have been written about the power of intention; and your own personal desire to be rid of those emotions now and forever are powerful. They seem to be like a “switch,” which allows the process to work. It is up to you. If you want to hang onto those bad or sad emotions, the mind will simply not release them. For example, if you were the victim of a crime, that scene or memory may still be vivid in your mind. You might even dream about it. You may have become hyper-alert, always on the watch for situations where you could be vulnerable. That fear is affecting your home life, your job, your willingness to travel alone, your relationships and your health. You may have developed chronic aches or pains that defy diagnosis. Most people don’t know that they have a built-in healing system that they were born with…the meridian system. Through utilizing certain powerful acupoints and certain simple descriptive words, you can remove the emotions from any scene or memory for good. That frees you up in many different ways and makes you feel as though that trauma never happened. Do you then want to walk in dangerous parts of the city at night? No, because the learning that came from the negative experience stays with you; you don’t go out and do stupid things. But the emotion of fear that was ruling your life is now gone. Any negative emotion that is the result of a bad experience or trauma can be removed.

The Yeast Beast Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

east and fungi comprise the third kingdom of organisms on earth. Neither animal nor vegetable, they are very similar to human cells with a nucleus and human-like cell membrane, and they are normal inhabitants of our intestines. However, when our human organism is weakened, one of these yeasts, Candida albicans, can overgrow and cause incredible misery, ill health and even death. In the end, when our body fails like all other organisms, yeast and other fungi (Mucor racemosis) help to digest us. Think about a bowl of fruit that turns black and disappears over time by fungal digestion. We are familiar with the most obvious yeast infections such as vaginal yeast (looks like cottage cheese), frequently a consequence of taking antibiotics, which kill good intestinal bacteria and allow Candida to overgrow, as well as thrush, diaper rash and jock itch. However, there are many more manifestations of Candida overgrowth that are more systemic in nature, and because of yeasts’ similarity to human cells, they can be difficult to eliminate. Stressors that promote yeast overgrowth are antibiotics, birth control pills, steroid medication, excessive sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, stress, heavy metal toxicity and medications, which compromise the immune system. Candida is dimorphic, which means that it has two forms. One is the yeast form, which looks like millions of white ping-pong balls. The more virulent form is the mycelia phase, which looks like tree branches. The mycelia phase can wind its way through intestinal membranes and allow it to travel to other organs throughout the body. Candida toxins include formation of alcohol, acetaldehyde, carbon dioxide, tartaric acid, arabinose, tyramine, polysaccharide protein complexes and more than 70 more. Acetaldehyde, cousin to formaldehyde (embalming fluid), is a powerful free radical generator and can damage phospholipase, which disrupts the bowel lining leading to leaky gut syndrome. That allows large food molecules to enter the blood stream and create inflammation and allergy. Acetaldehyde also binds to sulfur groups and various enzymes including acetyl Co A (energy metabolism) and inhibits amino groups that can block brain chemicals such as acetylcholine (memory neurotransmitter), serotonin (good mood/sleep), dopamine (happy/alert), and norepinephrine (adrenalin). These neurotransmitter disruptions can lead to anger, aggression, anxiety, fearfulness, timidity, phobias, easy startling, depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia, allergies and irritable bowel syndrome. Candida also competes for adrenal hormones with normal human cells and can cause adrenal insufficiency and endocrine (hormone) exhaustion. Other nutrient deficiencies created are magnesium, zinc, B6, and fatty acids, especially GLA (gamma-linolenic acid found in Primrose oil and Borage oil). July 2010

For an extensive list, Google “Candida toxins.” Common Candida overgrowth symptoms include burping (fermentation in the stomach, like making beer or champagne) which is usually accompanied by low stomach acid, fatigue, gas, food allergies, carbohydrate/sugar cravings (Candida wants to be fed), impaired memory, foggy thinking, loss of libido, painful joints, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, inhalant allergies, chemical sensitivities, catarrh, hay fever, sinusitis, persistent cough, cardiac arrhythmias, acne, skin redness/ rashes, earaches, headaches, dizziness, asthma, eczema, psoriasis, hives and epilepsy. Phyllis Saifer, M.D., M.P.H. from San Francisco coined the acronym APICH, which stands for Autoimmune Polyendocrinopathy Immuno-dysfunction Candidiasis Hypersensitivity Syndrome. These hormone and immune system illnesses include the following: hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, hypoadrenalism, diabetes, hypoparathyroidism, pernicious anemia, hepatitis, hair loss, vitiligo (loss of skin pigment), PMS, adrenal fatigue, ovarian inflammation, myasthenia gravis, allergic rhinitis, schizophrenia, autism, ADD, sprue, testiculitis, pituitary deficiency, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren’s syndrome. Diagnosis and Treatment The diagnosis of Candida is determined through a stool sample testing with DiagnosTechs Laboratory, Metametrix or Doctor’s Data Laboratories. Electro Acupuncture testing is very helpful as well as diagnostic questionnaires, which are available online and in Candida books. Treatment of Candida should be very comprehensive. Lifestyle adjustments, such as reducing stress, trying to get sufficient sleep, avoiding sugar, soda, alcohol, bread, fruits and fruit juice are a few basic steps. Killing yeast is a difficult business. For openers, there is the Herksheimer reaction. This is a reaction that is caused from killing the yeast. Their dead bodies and toxins have to be processed by our bodies and can cause aggravation of symptoms such as fatigue, depression and memory impairment, among other unpleasant symptoms. It is best to start with low doses of yeast killers and colonic hydrotherapy with ozone and a probiotic implant to make the job more bearable and rid your body of the die-off. ASTROLOGY&HEALTH
The Sun in
Monthly Health Outlook
Cancer ASTROLOGICAL ALCHEMYsm The Astrology of Self-Transformation®
Written By Robert Ayres
T
he Sun enters Cancer this month on June 21. This marks Summer Solstice. It is the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Cancer is the first water sign of the zodiac and it rules the fluid state of life and light. For those of us here in the Sierras, it is a time that produces maximum snow melt and water runoff. The water element is highly enlivened and energized. It is important to keep in mind that our bodies are 70 to 80 percent water. Esoterically, water is the physical manifestation of the etheric dimension. This subtle, non-physical dimension is the source of vitality. Water is necessary for life, as we know it to exist. Our etheric body interpenetrates our physical body and feeds it prana, or chi, directly from the life forces emanating from our Sun and the stars. The balanced flow of fluids throughout the body is the physical counterpart of this etheric energy. On another level Cancer, and its planetary ruler the Moon, rule the principle of soul. We are beings of body, soul and spirit. Soul is the intermediary between spirit and body. The primary principle of soul is love. The language of love is feeling and emotion. An emphasis on the water element in a person’s natal chart will manifest as strong feelings and emotional tendencies. It is important to understand that love, feelings and emotions are the expression of cosmic forces and powers. Love is the glue of the universe that holds the infinite diversity of life together. From a physiological standpoint, Cancer rules the stomach and the digestive system. The alimentary canal, from the mouth to the anus, is a very complex system that breaks down food and assimilates it into our bodies. The stomach is the primary center for this alchemical process. However, the liver, kidneys, spleen, intestines and other organs play their specialized roles and contribute to the metabolic process. It takes tremendous forces to break down outer nature (food) and transform it into energy for the body. The Sun in Cancer tends to put pressure on the digestive system, especially the stomach. If you were born with the Sun in Cancer or have your ascendant or important planets in this sign, you will tend to have a more sensitive stomach and digestive system. During this time there will be a tendency to

overeat and partake of foods that are more difficult to digest. This is also a time when food allergies can become more aggravated. Be conscious about putting too much pressure on your metabolism. Some of the best remedies for digestive problems are peppermint, spearmint, and papaya. These are best taken in the form of teas. Having a nice cup of hot tea after meals can be soothing and healing. A good basic rule to follow is moderation in all things. The ultimate, most refined and precious result of the digestive and metabolic processes is the blood. Blood is a very special esoteric, spiritual fluid. Cancer and the Moon also rule the breasts and the production of mother’s milk. Milk is one of the most important universal nutritional foods in creation. This is also a very special fluid for the manifestation and growth of life. From an outer perspective, Cancer rules nature. All of the kingdoms and beings of nature are the objectified manifestation of soul, or the Divine Mother. There is a direct correspondence between the human soul and outer nature. As we are told by the ancient mystery teachings, we received nature in order to feed, nurture, and heal ourselves. The healing methodologies of past civilizations were based on a deep and profound understanding of nature. The world provides us with a vast cornucopia of healing remedies for every possible disease and cause of ill health. We are slowly reclaiming this knowledge and will be all the better for it. Some fundamental paradigms, of what the human being is and what constitutes health, have to change in order to come into the right relationship with Cancer and nature. Dale Beesmer, a mountain bike trail advocate who has worked with the USFS in the Peavine area, hopes that this year and in the years to follow, additional single track road and trail will be added to the course of The Bloody Rose. “There are many non-designated dirt roads and trails leading to Mt. Rose Summit; if we could get those trails approved by the USFS, it would create an excellent race course and would provide unmatched trail opportunities for residents and visitors alike,” said Beesmer. “Bringing on board The Bloody Rose sponsor Watson Rounds Law Firm not only legitimizes our purpose but highlights the interest and need for more outdoor recreational events and resources,” added Beesmer. The 2nd Annual Galena Fest will take place Saturday and Sunday, September 25 & 26, 2010, at Galena Creek Regional Park, and will feature: The Bloody Rose climb to Relay Peak; The Thorn, an uphill 10k running race to the top of Sky Tavern; kids mountain bike races on park-side courses; The Big Fish Contest for kids, as well as other parkside activities for all ages. Proceeds from the two day event will benefit outdoor recreational resources in the Sierra. s you know, it is July and a special holiday is coming up: the Fourth of July! I love this holiday because I get to see beautiful fireworks and spend time with my family. What do you do on the Fourth of July? A few weeks before the Fourth of July, I fly to Minnesota to see my dad and his family. My dad and I go to Annandale, where my grandparents live. My dad’s sisters and their families also go to Annandale for the special weekend. On the day of the Fourth of July, everyone gets up early to see the big Annandale parade. It is so much fun. After that, we go back to my grandparents’ house and spend time outside playing games like horseshoes and volleyball. When it starts getting dark, we drive into Annandale and go to the carnival. My cousins and I go on the rides and play carnival games. Right before the fireworks begin, we spread out a blanket and set up folding chairs so that we can have a comfy place to sit. After the grand finale, we pack our things, making sure to pick up and dispose of our garbage, and head back to my grandparents’ home. We stay up late playing board games and cards; then it is off to bed. I hope that your Fourth of July is as special as mine!

Last summer he gave his first stand up comedy act to a group of campers in the Ruby Mountains. Most of the time jokes just come to him during the day. He hears a word and thinks about it for a minute and if it is a good word he will make a joke from it. He hopes that someday he can be a stand up comedian or a video game designer. MALE IMPOTENCE

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

man is considered to have erectile dysfunction (ED) when he cannot acquire or sustain an erection of sufficient rigidity for satisfactory sexual performance, which includes sexual intercourse and penetration. Any man may, at one time or another during his life, experience periodic or isolated sexual failures. The term “impotent is reserved for those men who experience erectile dysfunction during attempted intercourse more than 75 percent of the time. An erection occurs as a hydraulic effect, due to blood entering and being retained in the sponge-like bodies within the penis. The process is most often initiated as a result of sexual arousal; when signals are transmitted from the brain to the nerves in the penis. Erectile dysfunction and impotence occur when an erection is consistently difficult or impossible to

produce or maintain despite sexual arousal. The prevalence of erectile dysfunction is a wide spread problem among the male population. It is estimated that approximately 52 percent of men will have difficulties with erectile dysfunction and/or impotence. Studies have also shown that at age forty, 40 percent of men acknowledge some level of impaired sexual function and another ten percent recognize a waning sexual prowess, diminished libido and abnormal ejaculation with each succeeding decade. These figures are generally considered to be lower than the actual cases, as many men will not report their problems to their primary care physician or other health care providers because of the stigma associated with it. Embarrassment, potency, success, loss of masculinity and secrecy among other males is a primary reason for this. These factors can also lead to severe psychological consequences.

There are many causes for erectile dysfunction. Medications are a very common cause for the lack of sexual performance in men. A study entitled “Drug-induced male sexual dysfunction,” concluded that of the twelve most commonly prescribed medications on the market today, eight of the drugs list impotence as a possible side effect. It is estimated that 25 percent of cases of erectile dysfunction are due to medications. Some of these drugs include those for high blood pressure, diabetes, depression and other mental and psychological disorders. Other causes of impotence are related to spinal cord and brain injuries. Also, nerve disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke can cause erectile dysfunction. Hormonal and Arterial disorders can also cause impotence. Hormonal problems include pituitary gland tumors and low or abnormally high levels of testosterone. Arterial problems, such as peripheral artery disease and hypertension, decrease blood flow to the penis. Surgery of the colon, prostate, bladder or rectum may damage the nerves and blood vessels involved in an erection, causing erectile dysfunction. Also, a major factor in impotence involves lifestyle choices. Excessive alcohol and illegal drug use, obesity (which causes a decrease in testosterone production) and cigarette smoking are well-documented as major causes of “ED.” In fact the incidence of impotence is 85 percent higher in male smokers compared to non-smokers. While impotence is quite common among men, there are many forms of treatment available. Testosterone supplements are often used for hormonal deficiencies. However, most erectile dysfunction is caused by decreased blood flow to the penis. Treatments include a range of oral medications that dilate the blood vessels in the penis, allowing more blood flow. Penile suppositories are another type of treatment. These types of treatments can take anywhere from one to 36 hours to work, and can cause significant side effects. When these fail, micro-injections into the erectile tissue of the penis are extremely effective,
work very quickly and cause little to no side effects. However, the first and most important step to eliminating impotence and erectile dysfunction is to admit there is a problem and seek advice from a licensed physician. References: 1. Richard F. We expect a good show of runners as there is no running race like The Thorn anywhere in the Sierra; thanks to our running race sponsors South Reno Athletic Club and Dr. Andy Pasternak, we are bringing a new outdoor event to Reno. And, Galena Fest has something for everyone: bike races, the running race, a fishing contest for kids, festival and live music set in an idyllic, park-side setting,” said Richard Keillor, Galena Fest Founder. Galena Fest 2010 will expand to include an outdoor concert, festival and fishing on Saturday, September 25, and on Sunday, September 26, the signature events: The Bloody Rose, The Thorn, the kids’ mountain bike races, The Big Fish Contest and Art in the Park. The events will be staggered so that the activities can be enjoyed by all. Initial sponsors of Galena Fest 2010 include Intuit, Dr. Andrew Pasternak, Mike Rounds and S. Reno Athletic Club. he strongest case for the benefits of sex comes from studies of aerobic fitness. The act of intercourse burns about 200 calories, the equivalent of running vigorously for 30 minutes. During orgasm, both heart rate and blood pressure typically double, all under the influence of oxytocin. “Can we make the claim that having sex is equal to walking a mile or bicycling? “We don’t know,” says Robert Friar, a biologist at Michigan’s Ferris State University, “The data doesn’t really exist.” Although, a study conducted in Wales in the 1980s showed that men who had sex twice a week or more often experienced half as many heart attacks after 10 years as men who had intercourse less than once a month. The trial, however, did not include a parallel group of randomly chosen control subjects, in order to meet the scientific gold standard. More recent research focused on the hormones dehydroepiandrostone (DHEA) and testosterone, both important for libido. They have been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease as well as protecting the heart muscle after an attack. PAIN CONTROL In the 1970’s, Dr. Beverly Whipple of Rutgers University identified the female G spot; the vaginal on-switch for female arousal. She stumbled upon one of oxytocin’s more potent effects: its ability to dull pain. Whipple showed that gentle pressure on the G spot raised pain thresholds by 40% and that during orgasm, women could tolerate up to 110% more pain. However, she could not explain the link until the advent of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Using fMRI to view the brain of easily orgasmic women as they climaxed, Whipple found that the body’s pain-killing center in the midbrain is activated during peak arousal. Signals from this part of the brain instruct the body to release endorphins and corticosteroids, which can temporarily numb the raw nerve endings responsible for everything from menstrual cramps to arthritis and migraines for several minutes. Activating this region also reduces anxiety and has a calming effect. During trial studies in 1999, research found that the levels of immunoglobulin, a microbe-fighting antibody, for those who engaged in intercourse once or twice a week were 30% higher than in those who were abstinent. Curiously, those who had sex three or more times a week had the same levels as those who For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

Meanwhile, researchers in Sweden continue to explore how sex affects another immunological function: the healing of wounds. Using injections of oxytocin as a surrogate for arousal, Swedish investigators have found that sores on the backs of lab rats heal twice as fast under the influence of the hormone than without it.

A LONG, HAPPY LIFE? Various studies show that married couples tend to live longer and suffer less depression than unmarried individuals. Is this because of more frequent sex, simple companionship or some benign aspect of personality that lends itself to marriage? Finding an answer to that question is difficult, but sex itself appears to be a factor. A study of 3,500 Scottish men, for example, found a link between frequent intercourse and greater longevity. A much smaller study of elderly men found that those who masturbated appeared to experience less depression than those who did not. In addition, frequent sexual activity has been tied to lower risk of breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, a relationship that is still not fully understood but may involve some interaction between oxytocin and the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone and their roles in cell signaling and cell division. “Scientifically, it’s an exciting time that will lead to the rethinking and re-conceptualizing of human sexuality,” says Dr. John Bancroft, director of the Kinsey Institute. Chicory fiber: Chicory plant (Cichorium intybus) is a bushy herb that is native to Europe, North America and Australia. This plant was used by humans for a very long time, for both culinary and medicinal purposes. Chicory root fiber is nothing other than inulin, which has various health benefits. Unlike other types of dietary fiber, chicory root fiber promotes the health and growth of the gut flora (beneficial bacteria in the intestine). It is said to be beneficial in promoting digestion, preventing constipation, to lower high blood sugar levels, etc. It is also said to be beneficial in reducing fat levels in the body and so is also used for achieving weight loss. Dietary supplements and foods with chicory root fiber claim to be free of side effects, however chicory root extract may cause drug interactions, allergies and skin problems. Some reports suggest that this extract may cause abortion too. So, there are many apprehensions regarding chicory root fiber and pregnancy. It would be best to avoid products with chicory during a pregnancy. It is also suggested that products with chicory root fiber may cause flatulence. Soy Lecithin: Natural antioxidant and emollient composed of units of choline, phosphoric acid, fatty acids and glycerin. It is generally isolated from soybeans. It is used as an emulsifier and spreading agent and is non-toxic. References: 1. From Page 34, Change Your Past Why does this work? We live in a physical time/space reality, but our mind does not. It lives in a timeless place, and can easily go into the past or what it imagines as the future. At any second in time, we could have chosen dozens of probabilities of what we wanted to do in that instant. As the seconds tick by we choose what we want to do, or as in the above example, we may be in the wrong place at the wrong time at a particular second, and therefore have a traumatic experience. Because your mind lives in a timeless place, it can go “back in time” and change the past, and because of this procedure, as far as your subconscious mind is concerned, it has changed the past, with the help of certain powerful acupoints and just exactly the right words. The Dish on Dating… with Jenifer Rose
How is
It’s Just Lunch
Different From Internet Dating?
Dear Jen, I recently went on a date and he talked about his ex-wife the whole time. I found this to be very annoying. Do you have any advice on how to handle this situation if it occurs again? Dear Restless in Reno, After conducting over 2000 interviews and listening to feedback from over 20,000 dates at It’s Just Lunch, I have come to the conclusion that talking about your ex on a first or second date is the biggest mistake singles are making! I don’t blame you for being annoyed. The first date should be about getting to know each other. How is that going to happen if you spend all of your time talking about your ex instead of learning about your date? Even if your date starts asking questions about your ex, you should avoid the conversation. In the case of Restless in Reno, I would recommend saying something like, “I appreciate that you want to share your experience with me, but I would prefer to get to know each other better before getting into details about our past. I’m interested in getting to know who you are now and where you see yourself in the future.” Don’t be confused; even if someone is asking you about your ex, they really don’t want to know. Your first date should always be light and fun. If you spend all night talking about your ex, your date will not be having fun and they might conclude that you are not over your ex; or you wouldn’t have spent all evening talking about him/her.

The Health Benefits of a Healthy Yard Written By Holly Bromley
H
ealth conscious people are aware of the human connection to the plants living upon this earth, and how vital plants are to our very existence. We know that the environmental health of where we grow our food has a direct impact on the quality of the food we eat and therefore a direct impact upon our health. We are also quite aware that the future of our planet is dependent upon the health of the planet’s forests. Besides the great forests and food producing farm lands, there is another area where plants grow that directly impacts our health: the plants growing around our homes. The role that our landscape plants play in our lives is often overlooked. The trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers that grow right outside our doors have far more value in our lives than most people give them credit for. It seems that most people appreciate the beauty of a nicely planted and maintained yard, but the benefits go far beyond the aesthetic value of a nice landscape. The first and most obvious is the benefit of shade trees. A well placed shade tree reduces energy consumption by reducing the need for air conditioning in our homes. Trees also reduce the amount of reflective heat from solar rays bouncing off city “hardscapes” such as roadways, buildings and walkways, thus mitigating the heat island effect found in cities. Trees and shrubs can also provide windbreaks and play a significant role in filtering chemical and particulate pollution from our air. They also provide privacy screens and buffer our homes from the noise and light pollution of nearby traffic and commerce. Landscape plants provide enormous benefits to our emotional wellbeing. Studies show that views of outdoor plants cause prison inmates to feel calm and relaxed and can also reduce stress and anxiety in employees who work indoors. Research found that convalescing patients recover faster, with reduced need for pain medications, when exposed to a view of a lovely landscape. Our landscapes offer us numerous
health benefits. Therefore, it is vital that we return the favor by ensuring that our landscapes are kept in optimal health. People have a lot invested both financially and emotionally in their landscapes. Most people do not plant a “temporary tree,” with hopes it will only survive a few years and then die. When we plant a tree, we envision a time in the future when it provides cooling shade where we can relax below
“Landscape plants provide enormous benefits to our emotional wellbeing.” its lovely broad branches and dense foliage. Yet many frustrated home owners have discovered that having a healthy landscape requires more than plunking a couple of plants in the ground and adding water. Trees and shrubs, like people, can suffer stress and stress can cause plants to succumb unnecessarily to disease and insect infestation which can weaken or kill the plants we love. Much of the environmental stress that plants suffer is unavoidable: late frosts and exception-

ally hot summers, for example. Unfortunately, the majority of plant distress comes from the care they receive, or lack thereof. It is the caretaker’s responsibility to provide proper irrigation and practice general maintenance on a routine basis. Home irrigation systems that seem “worry free” to homeowners are often not appropriately designed or scheduled to provide landscape plants, especially trees, with adequate water; water is the single most important resource for plants in our dry climate. Improper pruning practices also have devastating effects on trees and shrubs and can render them weakened and vulnerable to disease and insects. Sadly, many “professional” landscape management companies have little if any knowledge of how to correctly prune plants for optimal health. Most landscape plants in our area are not native and are therefore growing in an “unnatural” environment. Consequently, they are absolutely dependent upon us and the resources we provide in order to survive and thrive. If you have questions regarding how best to care for

To Soy or Not to Soy... Written By Kurt Grange
S
oy. You cannot get away from this supposedly protein rich “health” food. It can be found in almost every aspect of a typical North American’s diet of fast, processed and packaged products including crackers, cookies, breads, baked goods, canned foods, soymilk, soy burgers, soy energy bars, soy ice cream, soy cereal, etc. And, because soy is FDA approved, it really doesn’t have to be listed on the label. If you were to eat soy in an Asian country you would probably reap the popularly touted benefits. However, the United States, in its infinite wisdom of “we know what is best for you,” decided to improve on Mother Nature by genetically modifying, pasteurizing etc. until the soy you are encouraged to eat in the U.S. is NOT the soy the rest of the world gets to enjoy. Americans do not eat “whole soy foods” as do the Asians. Instead, they eat factory foods containing industrially processed soy substances made from “Roundup Ready” soybeans (soybeans that have been genetically engineered...sometimes called recombinant DNA engineering) created by Monsanto. Western food processors then separate these altered soybeans into protein and oil, which is no longer considered a “whole food.” “A “whole food” behaves differently in the body when you remove or alter one of its components.” In addition, today’s high-tech processing methods fail to remove the anti-nutrients and toxins that are naturally present in soybeans. The anti-nutrients and toxins are then changed into toxic and carcinogenic residues by the high temperatures, high pressure, alkali and acid baths, and petroleum solvents of the processing methods. A clever public relations campaign by the American soy industry has convinced Americans that Asians are healthier because they eat soy, soy and more soy. On closer observations of Asian eating habits it has been found that “Asians eat small amounts of soy, as condiments in the diet, not as a food staple.” The current health trend is that if some soy is good for your health then the more soy you eat the better your health will be. Current studies show that this has not proven to be the case. On the subject of soy in American foods, Dr. Joseph Mercola says, “It’s ironic that soy has become so accepted as a health food when, as Dr. Kaayla Daniel, author of the groundbreaking book The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America’s Favorite Health Food, states, thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility–even cancer and heart disease.” When Dr. Daniel was asked, “In terms of their effects on people’s health, which of the soy food products on the market would you say were the worst?” She replied, “The worst by far is soy formula because it’s usually the only food nourishing the developing baby. Soy formula contains phytoestrogens that can disrupt the baby’s thyroid, reproductive development and toxic levels of manganese that
For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
can cause neurological and brain damage associated with ADD/ADHD and violent tendencies. Babies on soy formula are also at higher risk for gastrointestinal damage, allergies, asthma, poor mineral absorption and lower intelligence. Contrary to popular belief, soy formula was never used traditionally in Asia.” Furthermore, studies have shown that the above mentioned “possible” conditions are worsened in male babies. “The average daily dose of soy estrogens in soy formula (38mg) is higher than the amounts that cause thyroid problems and endocrine disruption in adults.” Dr. Daniel adds that in adults she often sees thyroid damage, infertility, menstruation problems, loss of sex drive, hairloss and digestive problems which she attributes to the ingestion of altered soy products. Are there any soy foods in America you can safely eat? Yes! But, they should be the old-fashioned fermented soy products such as miso, tempeh, natto, shoyu, tamari and edamame (the green immature soybeans). Tofu is a precipitated product and is considered to be less healthy. Soy sprouts are not healthy and should not be eaten. Traditionally they are used for pharmaceuticals, not as a food. Experts agree that the genetically altered soy products available in North America are creating or contributing to lowered immunity and health problems. It is not just the fact that we are eating genetically altered soy, it is also that we eat so much of it. The challenge is to find a manufactured food product that doesn’t contain soy. And, in addition to the soy products we intentionally eat, there is the hidden soy in our foods. Soy is hidden behind words like “boullion,” “natural flavor” and “textured plant protein” in food labels. To Soy or Not to Soy? This is a question that requires educated thought and research by each individual. The soy products available to us have potential for good. But, there is equal, if not more potential for harm. book The Yeast Connection, started all of his Candida patients on Nystatin gradually and usually kept them on it for many months. Nystatin stays in the intestinal tract like Amphotericin B. Ketoconazole, fluconazole and clortrimazole, which are other drugs that treat Candida systemically. However, they have side effects that inhibit their use in sensitive individuals. Commonly used therapies include the following: probiotics, which are used to crowd out Candida from the intestines, such as Sacchromyces boulardi, Probiomax (Howaru Bifidobacterium HN019; it contains 100 billion organisms per capsule and survives stomach acid and pancreatic enzymes), soil organisms, Isopathic remedies from Germany such as Pleo albicansan and Pleo pefrikehl, colonics with ozone, caprylic acid, coconut oil, calcium undecylenate, garlic, barberry root, neem leaf, olive leaf, grapefruit seed extract, berberine sulfate, bamboo leaf, oregano leaf, orange peel, Pau d’Arco bark, clove bark and oil, cinnamon bark, clove bud and many more.

When therapy works for a period of time and then the symptoms return, always look to heavy metals, especially mercury, and test with a hair analysis or provoked urine or stool analysis. German physicians think that Candida actually helps us to get rid of mercury and that it won’t be cured until the metals are eliminated. Dr. Schimmel, from Germany, says that when we have Candida it is declaring bankruptcy of the immune system. It is a tough condition and can be overcome with diligence. References: 1.
