COVERSTORY
PUBLISHERLETTER Dear Readers, Thank you to the many readers who have commented on our articles and advertisers, your input is much appreciated and is not wasted on deaf ears. Objectivity, and looking at from where the source of information comes helps one to determine agenda, legitimacy, opinion and pertinence. I especially appreciate those readers who voice their opinions and have the courage to attach their names to their beliefs. It has been my experience in life that learned lessons come many times not from our victories, yet from our losses and or disappointments. It is our hope that you will find this issue’s articles to be educational and enlightening in both the flavor and texture of topics chosen. Some say that curiosity killed the cat, yet ignorance is not always bliss. Our book review this month “Why We Believe What We Believe” scientifically reports on the power of suggestion and what we believe to be true. This month we will continue our series on “Truth” and “Unconditional Love” and we welcome your thoughts and reviews. Please send comments to publisher@hbmag.com. To celebrate Earth Day, read Ariana Purcell’s “What kids can do to save the Earth” and Holly Bromley’s article on “Growing a Bountiful Harvest in your Backyard.” You will find several articles on internal detoxification, as Spring is the time of renewal, and an excellent time to cleanse our internal systems. Learn the many health benefits of tarragon, apple cider vinegar and why “Airborne” works. We have a cute article on potty training your pets, and a powerful article on the importance of Hydrogen-pH. Starting this month you can now read your monthly health horoscope in each issue, as well as online. Wishing you a Happy Spring and always Best in Health,
Eggs
Written by Marie Harger
S
ink or float? When it comes to an egg, you want the one that sinks because it means it is fresh. Eggs are so common to people all over the world that, if they are not in your refrigerator they are probably on your grocery list. When it comes to food basics, eggs are at the top, along with bread and milk. Eggs have 13 essential vitamins and minerals, a good source of protein, unsaturated fats, antioxidants and choline. Choline assists with nerve fiber health, brain health, and there is evidence it can lower cholesterol levels and improve memory. Eggs help with weight management having only 70 calories each. Eggs promote muscle strength, and brain function and are important for a healthy pregnancy. Eggs are good for your eyes because they contain lutein which helps prevents age-related cataracts and muscular degeneration. Eggs have been eaten by mankind for millennia. In the evolutionary chain, eggs have a long history preceding the human species. The Egyptians and Chinese have recorded domestication of the fowl laying eggs as early as 1400B.C. and even earlier indications were recorded in India. Europe has had domesticated hens since 600 B.C. Oology, a branch of Zoology, is the study of eggs. Many animals lay eggs in water, on leaves, or in nests. These eggs have a covering that protects the developing creature. Turtles, birds, fish, reptiles, dinosaurs, insects, and some mammals lay eggs. Most people of the world eat the egg of the chicken. Economically important egg-producing hens in the U.S. are the Single-Comb White Leghorns who lay an average of 250 eggs per year. While free-range eggs are available, it should be known there is controversy, due to the fact that disease and sanitation is not as easily controlled. Although many consider the housing of chickens in modern egg-producing facilities to be inhumane, through many years of research at various universities it has been found that chickens, when housed indoors in what is called the “cage-system,” are healthier, eat better, live longer, are not subjected to pecking order from more aggressive chickens and have no predators. As for eggs, there are many options available, but organic or not, the benefits remain the same. They are a healthy natural food source.

T
he remarkable fact about Airborne is that it was created and developed by a schoolteacher. According to the box it is America’s #1 best selling immune support dietary supplement.
How did this product come to be? When a second grade teacher from Carmel, California found she was unable to stay healthy sometimes due to a hectic life, she was inspired to create a drug-free immune system support. She consulted with nutrition and herb experts, and then began to experiment with different formulations and delivery methods before creating the blend that would eventually become Airborne. Ingredients: Vitamin A: A yellow viscous liquid insoluble in water. Anti-infective, essential to growth and development of the body. Vitamin C: A preservative and antioxidant used in frozen fruit, fish dip, dry milk, beer, flavoring oils, juices, soft drinks, candy, jellies and some meat products. It is known to help immunity and the excretion of medications. Vitamin E: Obtained by vacuum distillation of edible vegetable oils. Protects fat in the tissues of the body from abnormal breakdown. Some evidence shows it helps the heart, blood vessels and aging process. Also, it helps form red blood cells, muscle, and other tissues. Over exposure can cause pallor, nervousness, depression, garlic odor breath, gastrointestinal disturbances, skin rashes, and liver injury in experimental animals. Manganese: A mineral supplement found in animals, plants and water. Used in dyeing. Can be an activator of enzymes and necessary for strong bones. Used as a nutrient and dairy substitute. Toxicity occurs by inhalation, which can cause symptoms of languor, sleepiness, emotional disturbances, and Parkinson like symptoms. Sodium Bicarbonate: Baking Soda. Are You In a Chocolate Mood? Written by Cathy Johannsen
M
ore exciting news for the chocoholics out there. Healthy Chocolate may actually assist in a variety of health issues relating to the brain. Chocolate has long been described as an aphrodisiac, a mood enhancer and a stimulant. Raw, unalkalized chocolate that is cold processed, high in natural cocoa nutrients, contains no sugars, hydrogenated oils or artificial ingredients, which is actually beneficial. Numerous studies show cocoa’s ability to reduce the risk of many disorders including those associated with emotions and mood. An estimated 26% of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from a diagnosable mood disorder. The average age for onset of mood disorders is the early or mid-20’s. However, the National Institute of Mental Health reports depression onset is occurring earlier. Major depressive disorder is the major cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44. Phenylethylamine (PEA) is a neurotransmitter in the brain that has been shown to increase attention and activity in animals and relieve depression in 60% of depressed patients. The PEA found in chocolate can boost seratonin and endorphin levels, increase libido and acts as a natural anti-depressant. Endorphins can decrease depression and elevate mood. Arginine is an amino acid, which is a natural sex stimulant. Chocolate aphrodisiac qualities are attributed to its source of arginine. A recent study demonstrated that women might improve a low libido by consuming chocolate. Raw cocoa contains many helpful vitamins and minerals. B6 is essential for the production of the hormones serotonin, melatonin and dopamine. It can help prevent or reverse depression and PMS-related symptoms. Magnesium also helps reduce symptoms of PMS. It helps raise the progesterone levels that drop before a woman has her period. This could be a reason women crave chocolate during their menstrual cycle. Tryptophan in chocolate is the precursor to serotonin, a natural antidepressant. It also helps produce other neurotransmitters like melatonin and dimethyltryptamine, both connected to restful sleep. Chocolate contains theobromine, which is a For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
natural stimulant to improve energy, blood flow, mood elevation and can even function as a cough suppressant. Finally, many people find chocolate benefits the brain by suppressing appetite and controlling weight. Chocolate provides essential vitamins and minerals while decreasing cravings. It stabilizes blood sugar levels, reducing hypoglycemic episodes and binge-eating. The flavonoid level can relieve inflammation. Chronic inflammation is associated with low leptin levels, which increases appetite. Additionally, cortisol levels increase with elevated inflammatory chemicals that start to break down muscles, deposit fat in cells and fuel the appetite. You can finally make a healthy choice with Raw unalkalized chocolate that is cold processed, because healthy chocolate leads to a health brain. Dr. Gary Buchanan, Sense Healing
Interviewed by Marie Harger
A
ccessing the senses of hearing, smelling, feeling/ touching, and vision connects us with our innate rhythms, the very same rhythms or energy that makes up this universe. All energy in the universe is vibrational, forming wave fronts as in sound. A wave front is the physics term for a surface, real or imaginary, that is the locus of all adjacent points at which the phase of oscillation is the same. Dr. Gary Buchanan has dedicated his life to the healing arts through our senses, with a unique and advanced approach called Sonatherapy. Sonatherapy holistically combines sound therapy, light and color, aromatherapy, geothermal acoustic hydrotherapy, subtle energy applications and massage. On a visceral level the body responses to Sonatherapy because it is connecting us with the basis of our structure.
Gary has received degrees and certifications from numerous institutions. He went to North Carolina School of Arts; Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy; the University of North Carolina; the University of Washington, Seattle; and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Australia. He furthered his education with certifications in Cymatherapy, Theology and Divinity, becoming a full-time minister and lecturer. While at the University of Washington, Seattle, Gary pursued a doctoral degree in music while researching vibrational healing methods, Cymatics, Synergetics, Music Therapy and Musicology, Perception Studies, and Microbiology. He came to Reno in 1979 from Brisbane, Australia, where he had been a professor of music, to pursue advanced studies at the Cosolargy Institute on the effects of light, sound, color and energy on the human organism. Through his continuing studies and research into vibrational Wave Front Composition & Analysis, he found that basic sound and music, as well as light and color applications, are valid and effective methods for self-healing. By integrating sound, light, color, geothermal hydrotherapy, massage, aromatherapy, and subtle energy applications, he designed Sonatherapy, which creates a Synergetic effect on the body to help alleviate pain, rejuvenate cells and revitalize body functions. Currently, Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa in Reno is the only authorized institution in the world researching and developing the science of Sonatherapy. They also offer training and certification and are working to export this new technology around the globe, from the U.S. to Canada, Central America, the United Kingdom, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Australia, and Japan. A Sonatherapy holistic treatment begins with a consultation where specific issues are addressed by Dr. Buchanan and the April 2010
9
Sonatherapy team, including Steamboat’s staff physician, when more serious and chronic conditions are present. Treatments all take place at Steamboat Hot Springs in an exclusive acoustically designed room. Depending on the ailment, treatments can range from one session to several for chronic health conditions. There are various sessions available to address symptoms and conditions of pain and stress, depending on an individual’s needs. Healing may occur for conditions such as allergies, inflammation, arthritis, mild to chronic pain, bone spurs, bruising, gland and organ disorders, fibroids and cysts, fractures, hearing problems, joint issues, neurological problems, tendonitis, skin conditions, respiratory disorders, psychological disorders, varicose veins and more. Sonatherapy further improves body function, circulation, assimilation, the immune system, overall muscle tone, acceleration of cellular functioning and balance of psycho-physical health. Gary’s goal is to continue his research and understanding of healing modalities to relieve the pain and suffering of others. His dedication is grounded in his spiritual background and in contemplating the meaning of existence through understanding higher consciousness. When dealing with pain, a health condition or problem, it usually is not one particular therapy that helps, but rather a combination. Sonatherapy is just that, a combined therapeutic approach. It is literally a one-stop shop for healing. For more info, contact Rev. Dr. Gary Buchanan at Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center and Spa at (775) 853-6600 or on the website at www.steamboatsprings.org. Go to ad on page 32. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

earn about the virtues of effervescent technology, which offers a powerful delivery penetration system for important supplementation like vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and electrolytes. Besides the added bonus of a sparkling taste, effervescence offers enhanced absorption, improved bioavailability, easy digestion, increased hydration, and a reduced carbon footprint. The benefits of an effervescent powder deliver system are many: -The powder form improves the bioavailability of supplementation for vitamins and minerals because they are produced with less processing of the ingredients (including avoiding excessive heat and binder ingredients such as cellulose). • Less time elapses between blending and processing, which reduces the exposure of the ingredients to air, thus maintaining freshness and potency. • In powder form the body better absorbs nutrients because it is unnecessary for the stomach acid or enzymes to waste energy in break down for the small intestine to assimilate and absorb. This is an advantage especially important for people with digestive difficulties. • The combination of the vitamin powder and water results in the effervescence of
carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide alters the permeability of cells in the intestines and allows nutrients to be more effectively absorbed through the intestinal wall. Studies offer positive research on carbon dioxide and its ability to promote transportation and increase the permeability of cellular membranes for the absorption of dietary supplements. For parents, the effervescent delivery system is a convenient way to give children the essential vitamins and minerals they need. It is also a useful option for the aging population that finds swallowing and absorption of pills and capsule form more challenging. Drinking your supplements encourages people to drink more water and to stay hydrated. The reduced carbon footprint is another reason a powder-form supplement is best. Powdered vitamins and minerals are more environmentally sustainable, as they require less energy and expense to produce, less fuel and thus less emissions to transport, and do not require petroleum-based plastic bottles. This technology is not only perfect for senior citizens, kids, and adults with an aversion to swallowing pills, but effervescent

Coffee Kicks Toxin’s Butt Written by Shelby Molchan

lthough the mention of Colon Hydrotherapy as a means of treating illness and body detoxification is mentioned as far back in history as the Ebers Papyrus around 1500 BC, the use of coffee in the bowel is thought to date back only as far as World War One. With a shortage of morphine and pain killers, and desperate for a way to relieve the soldier’s pain, a nurse decided to use a leftover pot of coffee in an enema. After all, if coffee sustained the doctors, maybe it would benefit the patients as well? Amazingly enough, the soldiers who received the coffee enemas reported their pain was much relieved. Word of the soldier’s benefits from the coffee enemas spread and in the 1920’s two professors at the University of Goettingen’s College of Medicine began to study the beneficial
effects of coffee taken through the bowel. Dr. Max Gerson learned of the research and began using coffee enemas in his treatments of cancer patients. Since that time the amazingly effective results of coffee colonics have been documented by Dr. Gerson and many others. In 1946 at a senate subcommittee hearing on cancer, doctors urged widespread trial of coffee, with one doctor reporting that severe pain was relieved in about 90% of cases. Here is a brief overview of how a coffee colonic can work to detoxify the body. Prior to the fill, organic coffee is introduced into the bowel. The coffee is then ’pushed’ by the fill therefore distributing coffee throughout the bowel wherever the water can flow. The hemorrhoidal blood vessels and the liver’s portal veins dilate. As the bile ducts expand with blood, bile flow increases. Blood

Colon coffee treatments are not known to produce any side effects. Patients do not experience a caffeine buzz as when consuming coffee orally, but rather a ‘lift’ and heightened sense of wellbeing as the liver is detoxified. Other benefits of coffee infused colonics are: Stimulation to overall bowel function. Reduction of serum toxins. Increased cell energy production and repair. The bile from the gallbladder draws out environment, metabolic toxins, Candida Albicans and other parasitic-like organisms. Rectal implants of coffee can relieve pain, general nervous tension, depression and many allergy related symptoms. Knowing all this, why would you NOT take coffee with your colonic? serum and its components are detoxified through the individual’s caffeinated liver. Colon Hydrotherapy hydrates the bowel and dilutes bile promoting even greater bile flow. The body is flushed of toxic bile and GST (glutathione S-transferase) is released as an enzymatic catalyst. GST has an excellent physiological effect as it fights free radicals. In 1981 it was proven that the palmitic acid found in coffee promotes the activity of GST, which is primarily responsible for the conjugation of free radicals which the gallbladder will release. Coffee is an effective means of detoxifying the bloodstream because it does not allow reabsorption of toxic bile by the liver across the gut wall. On the other hand, drinking coffee virtually assures the reabsorption of toxic bile. In addition theophylline and thoebromine, the major nutraceutical constituents of coffee promote dilation of blood vessels and counter inflammation.

Saddled With Winter Weight?
It may be time for a Detox! Written by Carol Christian

hy is it that so many people are drawn to the idea of detoxing? What is it that we are looking for? The fad of detoxification is probably linked to the growing awareness of the impact that our environment can have upon our health. Perhaps it is also a way in which people feel that they can regain control of their physical being in the face of a seemingly unavoidable onslaught of chemicals in our food, water and homes. The idea of body detoxification is not a new one, and is common to many societies across the globe. Different approaches have been used: fasting is a practice in many cultures and religions, and enemas and colonics are a feature of many health cures. Some eastern mystics advocate drinking one’s own urine as a means of cleansing body tissues, and Himalayan yogis have been known to swallow lengths of cloth and pass them through their system. Despite there being a resurgence of interest in the ancient practice of detoxification, you will be pleased to hear that the means do not need to be quite so dramatic! Detoxification is the means by which the body rids itself of any unwanted chemicals. These chemicals can be the waste products of your own body processes and of the bacteria and other foreign bodies, such as germs, that inhabit your intestines. They can also enter your body from the air you breath, the food and water you consume, and substances that are absorbed through your skin. In fact, in the industrialized world, it is virtually impossible to breathe or eat without taking in toxic chemicals. Nearly every molecule the body deals with, including those that are naturally produced, needs to be disarmed and eliminated once it has served its purpose. Typical examples of the process include dealing with the ammonia left over after proteins have been used, disarming hormones that have served their purpose, and getting rid of dead cells that have been removed by the immune system. This process is an expensive one, physically speaking, using up a large part of the energy the body expends on metabolism. The liver and kidneys are the main organs involved in eliminating toxins. The skin and bowels are also major organs of elimination. Keeping these in peak condition allows us to feel clear-headed and energetic. The issue of toxins – and therefore detoxification – centers on two important themes: •The type and strength of toxins to which we are exposed. Extreme examples of this occur when workers in particular jobs, such as agriculture, chemical plants or dry cleaners, are adversely affected, sometimes seriously, by their work environment – the victims of Gulf War syndrome are still trying to prove their case. More mundane examples of exposure to strong toxins are people who drink or smoke heavily and who pay the price with their health. •The individual’s ability to deal with those toxins. We all have differing capacities for detoxification. The detoxification capabilities between different people may vary by as much as five

A Rosy Outlook For Rosacea Written by Cindy L. Sult, RN & Kathy Sargenti
R
osacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that affects adults between the ages of 30 & 60, affecting both men & women. It is progressive, meaning that if left untreated it will get worse over time. While Rosacea is not curable, it can be effectively controlled with appropriate treatment. Types of Rosacea Erthematotelangiectatic: This is the most common form of rosacea, characterized by flushing, redness of the skin and may also include visible blood vessels, often known as spider veins. Ocular rosacea: This affects the eyes. It causes irritated watery & bloodshot eyes, as well as irritated & scaly eyelids. If left untreated, it can lead to vision loss. Phymatous rosacea: This causes skin thickening, most often around the nose resulting in rhinopyma (enlargement of the nose) from the excess tissue. Papulopustular rosacea: This is characterized by persistent redness with transient pimples & bumps - often called acne rosacea. Rosacea usually appears in phases, often beginning with the tendency to flush or blush easily and progressing to a persistent redness in a particular area of the face, such as the nose or cheeks. As it progresses, vascular rosacea may develop and small blood vessels swell and become visible. The skin may become very sensitive and reactive to skin care products, which contain acids, alcohols or other irritants. Further Inflammation can develop resulting in small red pustules spreading across the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. While the cause of Rosacea isn’t known, it is clear that a number of factors aggravate Rosacea by increasing the blood flow to the surface of the skin. These include hot foods or beverages, spicy foods, alcohol, temperature extremes, sunlight, stress, anger or embarrassment, strenuous exercises, hot baths, saunas, corticosteroids, and any drugs that dilate blood vessels. While it isn’t practical to avoid all of these, it is helpful to be aware of these triggers and avoid them when possible. Receiving appropriate treatment at the first signs of Rosacea can slow the progression. Laser treatments are especially effective at treating Rosacea, without the side effects of topical or oral medications. A photo facial is a treatment that heats up the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis), stimulating collagen April 2010

production, the foundation for building smoother skin. A side benefit is that it also closes down tiny veins. Photo facials are especially useful in treating Rosacea by increasing the collagen base and moving veins further from the skin’s surface, thus reducing redness and visible veins. It offers the further benefit of smoothing fine line wrinkles. Laser also effectively sterilizes bacteria that may be a contributing cause. Spider veins can be targeted by the laser, closed off and reabsorbed by the body, similar to the way a bruise heals. In conjunction with laser treatments, patients are placed on a skin care regimen with specific products formulated to treat Rosacea. The pH Balancing Act
Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
T
he hydrogen ion (H+) concentration is called pH. This concentration runs from a number 0 very acid to 14 very alkaline (basic) and 7 is neutral. Being in balance with pH improves health. To consider ideal pH, one must examine foods (whether they are acid or alkaline) and the pH of the different body systems. Acid substances such as vinegar or sauerkraut (in German means acid), which is considered very beneficial for the intestines. Alkaline substances are, for example baking soda, sodium bicarbonate or lye. All of the body’s systems have different ideal pH and the pH numbers are logarithmic: for example a pH of 6 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 7. The mouth is alkaline, to let the ptyalin enzyme begin to digest carbohydrates. The stomach is very acidic, at a pH of 1 to 2, to digest proteins. The small intestine is alkaline at a pH of 8 or 9 to allow pancreatic enzymes to work and the large intestine is again acidic. Blood is maintained very carefully by buffers such as carbonic anhydrase, at a pH of 7.35, slightly alkaline. Even fairly minor deviations from this blood pH can be fatal. Excessive acidity in the body has been associated with chronic inflammation such as arthritis, gout, osteoporosis, diabetes, allergies, hardening of the arteries, chronic infection, fatigue and even cancer. Foods that are acid forming include meats, grains, dairy, coffee, alcohol and sugars. Alkaline forming foods are vegetables, fruits, basmati rice, vegetable sprouts and green drinks. Alkaline water generators and alkaline water supplements produce water from pH 8 to 11. The product pHenomenal water is at a pH of 13.5 and when properly diluted for drinking is a pH of 11. New technology makes this possible without the caustic effects of alkalis such as sodium hydroxide (Draino).
strips which are available from the pharmacy or online. Although different practitioners have different ideal values, in the first morning urine pH the range should be 5.5 to 6.5 as the kidneys should be eliminating acid from the body. The morning saliva pH should be slightly alkaline at 7 to 7.5. The French and Germans have created much more complex ways of measuring the body fluids, blood, urine and saliva by not only measuring acid/base but also oxidation/reduction and electrical charge. As an example, the infection MRSA (hospital staph) treatment can be addressed using pH modification. MRSA (methacillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or hospital staph) produces chronic infections, particularly of the skin, that are resistant to antibiotics and are sometimes fatal. A new treatment program of adjusting the body’s pH has been successful for many MRSA patients. The bacteria are lactic acid producing, and literally eat holes in the body. By alkalinizing the body with pHenomenal water, pH 11, and applying an alkaline gel with a pH of 12.2 on the lesions, they retreat and disappear. Some women use it daily as a face peel for soft, youthful skin. Even more exciting is B-pHree, a wash away skin gel with a pH of 0 to kill all skin bacteria and MRSA once per week, again without burning the skin. To learn more about pH, review the chart. Living Abundantly
-Making Radical Manifestation A Realty In Your LifeWritten by Dinny Evans
abundance is the natural condition of the Universe. Secondly, practicing Radical Manifestation means to be willing to continually clear your consciousness of any and all victim stories, resentment, blame or judgments of others and to begin to take full responsibility for what happens to you in your life ---using the tools of Radical Forgiveness as laid out in Colin Tipping’s book: Radical Forgiveness, Making Room for the Miracle. The third assumption of the practice is: that we live within a dynamic plan that we are an active part in creating. Being willing to live within this new paradigm, or vision of the world around you then begins to change the things that happen to you. Rather than focusing on separation, you begin to focus on a view of joining and oneness. This means that you now begin to accept that everything has a purpose in life vs. being a random set of events without reason or intelligence.
T
he practice of Radical Manifestation is about developing a full understanding of how you see yourself in the world and how to move forward, raising your vibration, your awareness and having clarity about how to align with your intention and desires. If we believe that abundance is the natural condition of the Universe, then why is it we often find ourselves feeling like we’re not tapped in and facing shortages on so many fronts? The spiritual process of Radical Manifestation involves daring to live your dreams by developing a new way of looking at how you see yourself in relationship to the rest of the world. The underlying reason for continuously choosing to focus
on scarcity and lack, is often not feeling worthy to have abundance in the first place. There is no virtue in suffering your way through life. Radical Manifestation means learning to cultivate the right frame of mind to both define what it is you are looking for, and then the courage to reach out and manifest your dreams. To continue to grow in the ability to maintain an abundant life because it is an ever-evolving process, it is important to keep in mind the following central assumptions of Radical Manifestation: First, it is essential to consider that Spirit is the source of all of our supply and abundance. This is the starting point for manifesting what we desire, and then working to maintain the belief that

The fourth and final assumption involves finding clarity in knowing what you want, why you want it, and then clearly aligning yourself with your request to the universe. A feeling of gratitude begins to replace fear, and you begin to feel a strong knowing that your request is already done. You then just step inside to your inner wisdom. Dropping your attachment to having what you desire also factors into the Radical Manifestation process. As one becomes more aligned with these four central assumptions of Radical Manifestation, you will experience a new sense of purpose in your life and an increase in consciousness. Then comes the work of keeping those channels clear.

“Saddled With Winter Weight” continued from page 14 fold, because of their genetic make-up. Two people in the same car may be exposed to the same rush hour smog, one may feel fine while the other may develop itchy eyes, an irritated throat, runny nose and headache. It is likely that the person who exhibits signs of excess toxicity, such as a sluggish metabolism, a feeling of permanent tiredness, adverse food reactions, or multiple chemical sensitivities, is not as capable of handling the load as the next person. There are a number of reasons why this may be so, and we will look at these later. In 1927 Johanna Brandt wrote a book called The Grape Cure that detailed her return to health after following a mono-food fast using grapes. In the book she talks about the “Seven Doctors of Nature,” which she lists in the following order: Fasting, Air, Water, Sunlight, Exercise, Food and Mind. Her ideas have stood the test of time and remain as relevant today as when she devised them. Let’s look briefly at each of these “Doctors of Nature.” •Air. Without air we are not alive – breathing air is the first thing we do when we are born and the last thing we do on this earth. Learning to breathe deeply to fill the lower part of our lungs allows proper circulation of oxygen to the tissues. Air quality is important, and while there is little that we can do to avoid the pollution of, say, inner cities, there is much that we can do to improve our body’s resistance to the pollution, and to improve the air quality in our homes. •Water. After air, water is the second most vital nutrient, without which we cannot live. Looking after the quality of your water, and drinking plenty of it, is one of the most important health-giving steps you can take. •Sunlight. Along with both other animals and the plant kingdom, we respond to sunlight.
Although we have managed to punch a hole in the ozone layer, and it is obvious that extended exposure to intense sunlight can lead to skin damage, regular exposure to gentle sunlight, sufficient to manufacture vitamin D in our skins, is a vital element of a health program. Getting outdoors daily, however, especially in the winter months, is something many people no longer do, as we live and work cloistered in buildings. •Mind. An important part of any detox program is to balance our mental energies and to focus on our goals. In addition to detoxing our bodies, we can also get rid of our mental clutter. This usually involves creating a calm environment with a minimum of distractions, which enables us to channel our energies and resolve whatever is giving us cause for worry. When you achieve this, then you can truly say that you have been detoxed! Destructive emotions, such as hate, fear, self-pity and resentment create their own toxicity by affecting hormone balance, digestion and blood flow. •Exercise. We are made to move. To remain static, behind a desk or in front of the TV, for hours and even days on end, only serves to seize up our joints and weaken our muscles. Moving does not necessarily mean a strenuous workout; it can be an invigorating walk, getting on with physical tasks that you have been putting off, or merely enjoying life – just make sure you move around regularly. Massage is another way of getting the body “moving”, and while it is not a substitute for exercise, it is a potent tool for encouraging the body to get rid of toxins. •Food. The ‘quality’ of the food we eat is the main focus. You wouldn’t put substandard fuel in your brand-new Rolls Royce and expect it to perform, so why put substandard or the wrong food for your body chemistry into your mouth? In addition to food, there are a number of herbs that
April 2010
19
have been shown over the millennia to be effective at encouraging restoration of health by supporting the major organs of detoxification. Concentrated nutrients can also provide this support. •Fasting. A modified fast (in which certain foods are allowed, rather than just a water fast) is one of the quickest ways of allowing your body to repair itself. Even if you do not manage to fast as often as you would like, you can still fast from particular substances. If you have never gone for a month without coffee, then now is your opportunity to do so, and to see how you reap the benefits. Fasting is something that your body understands, you just need to make your mind understand it as well. References: 1. The Detox Manual by: Suzannah Oliver 2. Timeless Healing by: Herbert Benson, MD

Earth Day
Written by Ariana Purcell, 12 years old arth day is coming soon, April 22nd! I love Earth day because it’s a day when you can think about all of the things the Earth does for us. This month in school we will talk about it in class and do a few earth friendly projects. I know for sure that my family and I will go to the park and enjoy the great outdoors. We might even throw on some reusable plastic gloves and pick up garbage that we find while we are there. You should always think about the Earth and what you can do to keep our home clean, make sure to put in some extra “green” time on Earth day this month!

JOKES: 1)What character trait did Abraham Lincoln have a lot of? 2)Which president had the best manners? Allan Briggs is an 11-year-old fifth grader at Our Lady of the Snows School, Reno, NV. He has been making up jokes for the last 2 years. Last summer he gave his first stand up comedy act to a group of campers in the Ruby Mountains. Most of the time jokes just come to him during the day. He hears a word and thinks about it for a minute and if it is a good word he will make a joke from it. He hopes that someday he can be a stand up comedian or a video game designer.
According to “50 simple things kids can do to save the Earth,“ here are a few ways you could show your appreciation: • Make a wooden box (with an adult’s help) that is two feet high, two feet wide and eight inches deep. Add moist bedding, like peat moss. Then, add some red worms, which you can find at a local bait shop. Once you’ve added the worms to the box, you can add your organic garbage that is not meat, bones or fatty food. The worms will eat the garbage and turn it into soil over time.
Protect the animals in your own backyard.
• Contact a local nursery and ask them which kinds of plants will provide food and cover for animals in your area that you would like to attract to your backyard. Then, design and plant a garden that will do just that.
Get a charge from batteries
• Keep in mind that the energy you get from batteries comes from the earth, so do not waste it. Make sure to turn off your electric devices that run on battery power. • Plug your device into the wall versus running it on batteries. • Use things that do not use batteries or electricity, like solar calculators. • Talk to your parents about rechargeable batteries. They might cost more in the beginning, but over time you’ll actually save money. • Dispose of batteries in the appropriate place, such as Office Depot, Batteries Plus, or Whole Foods Market. Chiropractic, would not have survived for over a hundred years and be around today if it was not for its success. A chiropractor that practices Clinical Biomechanics of Posture (CBP) receives additional training on top of their doctor of chiropractic degree. CBP is in practical terms a specialty of chiropractic much like orthodonture is a specialty of dentistry. The difference is that a chiropractor who utilizes CBP also practices traditional chiropractic treating the same conditions but also employs posture correction and rehabilitation for long term correction and spinal stabilization. How does CBP correct my posture? First of all, you can expect to have your posture evaluated. Most doctors will use some form of photography and/ or computerized analysis to help with this evaluation. The postural analysis not only helps the doctor evaluate your specific posture to determine treatment but also helps with evaluation of your progress by comparing pre and post posture checks. Most patients are appreciative of this visual data, enabling them see their posture and progress at re-evaluations. Like the saying goes “A picture is worth a thousand words” … X-rays are a second procedure utilized by a CBP practioner. The human eye simply cannot see what is underneath the skin and the benefits of x-ray are critical for proper diagnosis and treatment. Just like a dentist would not fill a tooth without taking an x-ray for proper evaluation of a cavity … spinal xrays are necessary for proper evaluation of your spine, as well as determining the
best possible treatment for your specific case. Post x-rays are also taken to measure actual spinal changes. After postural analysis and x-ray measurements, the doctor studies this information to determine your course of treatment. Mirror-image adjustments are a specific treatment unique to CBP. Simply put, a mirror-image adjustment is the exact opposite of your posture. The doctor may employ a special table with drop pieces and blocks to mirror-image your posture and then uses either a manual adjustment, drop-table adjustment, or a hand-held instrument to correctively change your posture. Whether it is a manual adjustment or a gentle instrument adjustment … the technique can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient. The correction process does not happen in one or two visits … much like re-aligning the teeth with braces … posture correction is a process which requires time and commitment. Exercise and traction are also prescribed to correct your posture. Much like mirror-image adjustments are done to change your posture, mirror image exercise and tractioning are used to make long term corrective changes in the surrounding musculature and ligaments. The adjustments paired with exercises and traction are what studies have proven to be necessary to get the best results in long term posture change and correction. In short, Clinical Biomechanics of Posture contains all the best things that chiropractic has to offer for treating various ailments but also takes it one step further… offering long term corrective solutions, so your problem does not keep coming back again and again. Doctors of this technique are generally most passionate about helping you with your long term health and wellness and not just immediate symptom relief.

Spiritual Truth Written by Terry Lowey, MFT
S
piritual Truth might seem a daunting topic, both too vague and too vast to define. It is, after all, intangible, going beyond our 5 senses. In the stubbornly left-brained logical, rational culture in which we find ourselves, things that cannot be materially quantified are often pushed to the background and even demeaned as not being worth our time. Then there are those that believe their particular religious traditions hold the only keys to spiritual truth, excluding others who believe exactly the same about their brand of faith. The radical Muslim suicide bomber who dies violently in the market place and the Christian zealot who murders the abortion doctor do, after all, share a deeply held conviction in the respective ‘spiritual truths’ that they believe their actions embody. These people have aligned themselves with a belief system that demonizes and objectifies others. Herein lies one thing that real spiritual truth certainly is not – exclusionary or based solely on a dogmatic belief system. Core spiritual truth would have to be universally true regardless of any of our secular divisions. It would be true for
all people at all times. In a world characterized by unbounded information on a variety of cultures and seemingly endless opposition to others points of world view, fettering out even a few aspects of truth gives us pause. What would be the value? To answer that, let’s first look at what is endemic in our current state of affairs: widespread division, conflict, financial chaos, confusion and despair. That these are prevalent in the current climate is indisputable. That this threatens quality of life is equally apparent. Like the demeanor of the soldier in the foxhole, knowing his own death could be imminent; he is faced with the choice of objectifying the enemy or realizing they are, like him, another human being. It is in times exactly like these that spiritual truth becomes especially alluring. Webster’s definition of spirit is “a life-giving force; the animating principle; soul.” This will be the premise of this article – that there is such a source that is omnipresent and that can be drawn upon for direction and that, further, when this direction is taken will ultimately lead a person to a heightened state of wellbeing. The resulting decision-making and actions benefit not only them but also the world at large. In short, the result is a win-win for the individual and the collective. Throughout all of human history reference to this source is documented and given a place of sacred reverence. It harkens us to live in ways that are for our highest good. It is called The Light and being out of it is like what many are experiencing in the dark hours of the current financial and confidence crisis. It is that persistent feeling we get that something is just not right. It beckons us back toward itself, spiritual truth. It comforts us and assures us that there are ways to live replete with love, beauty, meaning and fulfillment. It engenders trust in life, promising a sigh of relief and rekindling hope and optimism. Spiritual truth does not require belief in a specific religion or even deity because it is innate and instinctual. Rever-

holding our opponent in high regard as a person with equal value to ours. Whether in a corporation, political debate or a family unit, this stance of “a heart of peace” will facilitate both high quality and more enduring outcomes.
You are where it starts. Spirituality is inner-directed, a deeply personal experience. It requires going within and honing your ability to hear that “still, small voice”. It is not small in the sense of being timid or inconsequential, but soft and nonintrusive. It beckons but does not demand, honoring our free will. It requires a state of stillness and of being conscious in the present moment. It holds the power to transform a thought, a feeling, a moment and a life.
Too rarely, yet every now and again we will hear a political leader with “a heart of peace” making a definitive stand on a topic while still being graciously respectful of the opponents’ point of view. Both Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Junior demonstrated this character when dealing with those who disagreed with their policies. It is noteworthy that both made considerable, respected and lasting historical imprints. The parent who approaches their child with an open heart, willing to hear them out while at the same time holding fast to their standards will have a far higher probability of positively influencing that child than the parent who engages in an intractable power struggle. The same holds true with a schoolteacher or a manager at the office.
Following one’s spiritual truth can actually lead away from established religious practice or societal norms at times. It is mysterious in that it is the opposite of a ‘know-it-all’ position. “…We carry the conviction (often only faintly) that even though we don’t know where we’ll end up, we’re following a soul-path of immense richness, that we’re supposed to be on this path, that it’s required of us somehow. We move in a sense of rightness, of lure, of following a flute that pipes irresistible music.” Sue Monk Kidd Core spiritual truth is inclusive, never objectifying others but rather seeing them as people with wants, needs and passionate beliefs just like our own. Objectification of others leads to vilification of them and then we are drawn further to points of view (we call them facts) that justify our conclusions. Our information gathering mechanism then becomes tainted, or prejudiced. We become arrogantly judgmental. It is worth noting at this point that taking this rigid, judgmental stance toward ourselves is equally as damaging. This is not to preclude even hearty disagreement. It does, however, require empathy and consideration for the others point of view, along with a healthy dose of enough humility to know that our own understanding of things is not omniscient. We may still, in good conscience, staunchly maintain our course for a certain cause, but will now do so
“A heart of peace”is a primary component of spiritual truth because it embraces the inherent humanity of each and every individual. Taking this truth to heart is being guided by love and putting it into action leads to inner peace, which is the central for peace to the whole. Tuning into Spiritual truth is a surrendering that is an ever-evolving process. Love is misunderstood to be an emotion; actually, it is a state of awareness, a way of being in the world, a way of seeing oneself and others. “It is always the false that makes you suffer, the false desires and fears, the false values and ideas, the false relationships between people. Abandon the false and you are free of pain; truth makes happy, truth liberates.” Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. References: 1. The Arbinger Institute. April is National STI/STD Awareness Month: Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) is a growing trend for teens, young adults and 45+ somethings back in the dating scene.
D
id you know that more than half of all Americans will get a sexually transmitted infection (STI)?
Ironically, STIs often occur with few or no symptoms. The subtle distinction between an STI and an STD—disease actually causes a symptom. One reason the infection rate continues to rise across a spectrum of age and race is that in the absence of symptoms and unsafe sexual practices, people continue to unwittingly infect one another. Consider the following sobering statistics: •An estimated 19 million Americans acquire sexually transmitted infections each year. •People of color and young people (between 15 and 24 years of age) have a disproportionately higher number of STIs, due largely to socioeconomic factors. •According to a 2008 report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were a record number of Chlamydia and syphilis cases. Chlamydia rates increased 9.2% from 2007 to 2008, with 1.2 million cases reported in 2008 while reported rates

of syphilis jumped 18% between 2007 and 2008. •Although the CDC cited recent statistics that the infection rate among those 55 and older has remained relatively stable, a 2008 study reported in Time magazine suggests otherwise. Researchers at the West Highlands Health Protection Agency discovered that the rate of STDs among those 45 and older had more than doubled over a decade. Researchers highlight a number of factors for this phenomenon, including a lack of sexual knowledge and less consistency in using condoms because the risk of pregnancy has passed. Getting the facts and knowing your treatment options is an important step to achieve sexual health. Whether it is seeking the services of a local clinic or a trusted physician, April is a good month to get started. Increase awareness of STI issues from two critical fronts: First---getting educated about and practicing safer sex reduces the likelihood of infection. The CDC notes that the consistent and correct use of male latex condoms can reduce (though not eliminate) the risk of STD transmission.
Using barrier methods for all sexual activity, not just intercourse, is critical. Second---getting tested. Patients should get tested if they have unprotected sex or change partners. Even patients in seemingly monogamous relations should get tested—many cheating partners do not wear protection. Growing populations of HIV/ AIDS patients are married women. Don’t become another statistic. Ask your doctor or clinician about safe sex practices, or uncover the information through trusted, health-related sites on the internet, such as the CDC, Planned Parenthood, or the American Social Health Association. Get tested if you suspect you may have an infection or simply want to put your mind at ease. Untreated STDs may lead to cervical cancer for women, brain and oral cancer for men and infertility issues.
Comprehensive, medically accurate, age-appropriate sexual health information and services should be accessible to everyone. This facilitates informed decisions and smart lifestyle choices that will enhance the health and well being of sexually active individuals and as their partners. Computers Don’t Grow on Trees E
very decision to communicate has some impact on the environment. For example, whether we email or send a letter, we consume energy and resources. There are environmental trade offs in every choice we make, and there is no simple “right answer”. Effective stewardship requires a careful examination of the larger picture that compares the entire lifecycle, from raw materials to energy use and end of life, to fully understand the impact and performance of both electronic media and paper. The facts may surprise you.
Raw Materials: Are They Sustainable? PAPER:
Raw materials are renewable. The paper industry replenishes more than it takes and ensures sustainability by planting 1.7 million trees every single day, more than three times what is harvested.
Down To Earth Insight
What Can Be Recycled?
The Dept. of Energy has stated that the carbon sequestered on forested lands in 2006 was greater than the carbon released from harvesting wood over the same period.
ELECTRONIC:
Making a computer requires the mining and refining of dozens of minerals and metals, including gold, silver and palladium, as well as the extensive use of plastics and hydrocarbon solvents. The lifespan of a computer is short, and electronics have become the fastest growing waste stream in the world.
End of Life: How Does It Break Down? PAPER: Paper is a biodegradable substance that is also recyclable and reusable. Nearly 60 percent of all paper in the U.S. is recycled and more than 63 percent of the fiber used to make new paper products in the U.S. comes from recycled sources.
ELECTRONIC:
Only 18 percent of all electronic devices are currently recycled. 1.84 million tons of these devices were disposed of in U.S. landfills in 2006, and an estimated 30-40 million Pcs will be ready for disposal in each of the next few years. Additionally, e-waste now constitutes our single largest toxic waste export. The fact is, both print and digital media must become increasingly more sustainable to survive, and the choices we make should be based on a data-driven comparative analysis of lifecycle and total environmental impact. The paper and forest products industry has been addressing sustainability for decades, and adheres to many third-party certification standards and government regulations. They have made great progress and have a true environmental story to tell.

Paper is truly sustainable, with waste fully recoverable, ready for recycling into new paper. When people use more paper, landowners plant more trees. Electronic devices don’t grow on trees. The electronic industry continues to grow rapidly. Based on current nonrenewable raw materials and escalating energy demands, this growth is unsustainable.
Did you know? It costsFor an past estimated $2.8 of energy annually to leave computers sitting idle overnight in the U.S. alone. On a CO2 issues, go billion to: www.HBMag.com 26 April 2010 basis, that’s 20 million tons of carbon dioxide, about the amount produced by four million cars on the road.

Energy Consumption: Is It Efficient? PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY: One of the biggest users of renewable, low-carbon energy in the world. 60% of the energy used to make paper in the U.S. comes from renewable resources and is produced on site at mills. These facilities use combined heat and power (CHP) generation systems, which are 80-90% efficient. Fossil fuel use and purchased energy in this industry is steadily decreasing.

Spring Skiing: It’s Not Over Yet! Written by Sean Block

ave you seen them? They are everywhere; the raccoon-eyed tan lines of those who have not yet abandoned the slopes. And why would you? The last of the snow may have fallen, but it hasn’t melted yet. The days are lighter longer, the lines are smaller, and who doesn’t like skiing or riding comfortably in a T-shirt? The powder days are gone, but the season persists. So before you hang up the skis and pull out the bike, the boat, or the hiking shoes, it is time to cash in on a few more weeks in the mountains. Spring skiing is different than in the depths of winter. Watch out for hazards like rocks, trees and dirt that emerge from the shrinking snow-pack; and don’t forget the sunscreen! However regardless of the season, some things are always the same; like these tips for hard times to help you save a bit of money and time on the mountain. PACK A LUNCH!!!! - If you’ve been to a ski-resort, you’ve seen the lunch-line. Busier than an elementary school cafeteria and infinitely more expensive, the best idea is to stay away altogether. Snacks and drinks for the ride home are always a plus!

Fuel Up BEFORE You Head Out - Gas prices can spike almost a dollar between metropolitan areas such as Reno, and the fuel available in the mountains! On a round-trip drive to a resort 50 miles from Reno at 15 miles per gallon, this amounts to a possible $7 in savings each trip. For those driving from farther away, the savings can be even more significant. If You’re Going Next Season...- Some resorts offer season-passes that include the springtime of one season, AND the entire next season in one! Many season-pass rates spike once the season starts. If you know you’ll be going, get your pass now and potentially save yourself hundreds! Check For Ticket Deals - Most resorts have daily specials, group rates, and multiple-ticket discounts. If you don’t make it up enough to buy a season pass, these packages, deals and discounts offer great ways to save money. Make An Equipment Checklist - Especially if you are heading to the slope with the kids, a checklist is crucial. Whether in your head or on paper, amid the chaos that is resort-skiing, a list can help you from losing or forgetting equipment, passes, etc...one of the leading causes of bad times on the mountain. Missing equipment costs money, time, and frustration and can be easily avoided by staying aware of what you need with you. Also, in spring the snow is melting and things get wet; packing extra gear (gloves in particular!) can help guarantee that you remain warm, dry and happy on the slopes. 28

FAMILYHEALTH
Birthing Options: Do You Know Yours? Written by Sherry Asp
P
regnancy and birth are a transformative and, often times, empowering time in a woman’s life. Two of the most important choices you will make regarding your birth are choosing the right healthcare provider and the right place for your birth. The first step in answering these two questions is figuring out your philosophy regarding birth. Part of this process entails a seemingly endless series of choices; cloth or disposable diapers, co-sleeping or crib, stay-at-home or work. The list goes on and on.
Birth is a very personal and powerful event in a woman’s life, and as such there is no one “right” way to give birth. There are currently two models of care in regards to labor and birth, the medical model and the midwifery model. Neither is exclusive to the care provider as there may be midwives who may subscribe to the medical model and physicians who prefer the midwifery model. These models apply to a philosophy of care, not necessarily to a care provider. The following questions can help you determine which model best suits the type of birth that is best for you. • Do you believe that birth is a normal, healthy process that places trust in the abilities of the mother’s body, or do you believe in undertaking a birth that requires placing trust in modern technology? • Do you want to have control of your healthcare decisions or do you prefer to place your care in the hands of a healthcare provider? • Do you feel that medication for pain relief is necessary during labor or do you believe that there are other natural ways to diminish the pain felt during labor? The answers to these questions will put you well on your way to determining the model of care and the healthcare provider that are best suited to your childbirth needs. Ask your potential provider what
their philosophy and their statistics are so that you can find the right fit Where you choose to give birth is equally important. Currently in Nevada there are only two choices for place of birth, home and hospital. To determine which of these is the right choice requires research. There may be things about both of these settings that, when well understood, could change your mind. Some questions to ask might be: • Does the location offer what is important to you (water birth, low intervention rates, intermittent monitoring, technology, etc.)? • What are the induction, epidural, and cesarean rates? • Are VBACS (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) available?

Growing A Bountiful Harvest In Your Own Back Yard
Written by Holly Bromley
T
he long winter has come to an end and Spring blossoms are bursting all around us. Once again we are looking with anticipation at our fruit trees with hopes of a bountiful harvest. Fresh nectarines in abundance and a cherry crop can be outstanding. Although our Nevada climate is not always the most conducive to fruit production, we almost always have apples and pears and some years the bonus of more finicky fruit crops. There are also a variety of berries and grapes that do well in our area. Eating, sharing, and preserving fresh organic fruit brings us in touch with Earth’s provisions in a way that is often lost in our modern, urban world. If you have even the smallest of yard space, growing your own fruit can be a rewarding and delicious experience. All it takes is a little knowledge and patience to reap the benefits of growing and harvesting your own fruit.
grow flat against a wall or fence. Although slightly more time intensive than maintaining natural form trees, a homeowner who learns how to maintain this form of tree can reap a surprisingly large harvest from a small space. Once the type and size of plant is determined, it is essential to choose a variety that will produce well in our environment. Nevada has a short growing season and many fruit tree varieties bloom early in the spring, thus loosing their blooms to late freezes. Also, if a fruit tree has late maturing fruit, it may freeze before the fruit has a chance to ripen. The key here is finding fruit varieties that bloom later in the spring and have early ripening fruit. While most peach varieties don’t meet these criteria, there are some varieties such as Reliance and Contender that will produce most years in our area. Likewise, there are cherry, plum and even some apricots that are good fruit producers most years.
Before you get started, there are a few basics you need to know. The first is to evaluate how much space is available. Fruit trees come in a variety of sizes from standard size fruit trees that can grow 30 feet tall, to semi dwarf varieties reaching only 12 to 15 feet and dwarf varieties that grow to only 6 feet at maturity. Because of this, yards of any size can accommodate some type of fruit tree. Even a tiny townhome patio with a sunny south facing flowerbed can be an ideal spot for thornless blackberries, a grape vine or an espalier fruit tree. Espalier is a method of shaping and pruning trees so that they April 2010
One last consideration when choosing fruiting plants is whether or not the fruit is self pollinating. Many varieties of fruit must have a cross pollinator to produce. One marvelous way to get around having two different fruit trees to pollinate each other is to buy grafted varieties in which the grafts are specifically chosen to pollinate each other. As an added bonus, a grafted fruit tree can give you pie cherries and table cherries or tart apples and sweet apples on the same tree. Grafted trees require a little more knowledge to prune properly, but are fun to grow. If all of this seems overwhelming, take a deep breath and relax. There is a wealth of information at your local Cooperative Extension office, on the Internet, and at your local nursery (avoid the large chain stores for this). You can also find help from a consulting arborist or horticultural consultant who can address each concern specific to your property. This professional can help you do everything from planning, purchasing and planting, to giving you individual lessons on how to prune your own fruit trees, vines and shrubs. In an age when we are separated from our food sources by distance, packaging and distribution, getting back to simple basics of growing your own food even on a small scale can be a rewarding and nutritious experience. HERBS&SPICES
Tarragon
Written by Brittany Russel
U
nlike many herbs, Tarragon is not known to have been used by ancient people. This popular herb is paired with vinegar and fish having similar qualities to anise. Tarragon enhances such a diverse food groups such as meats, vegetables and vinegars that many cooks consider this herb to be so satisfying it should be included in your pantry or herb rack for every day use. While it is used in a variety of recipes, tarragon has many medicinal uses. Tarragon is excellent with seafood, fruit, poultry, eggs and most vegetables. The herb also compliments sauces, particularly béarnaise sauce. French or German Tarragon is sweet and aromatic, reminiscent of fennel, anise and licorice. Russian tarragon has coarser, paler leaves, is not fragrant and tastes slightly bitter. The fresh or dried leaves and roots of the tarragon plant can be used for their medicinal benefits: eaten to induce appetite; relieves stomach cramps; substitute for salt for people with high blood pressure; aid in digestion; stop hiccups. For a toothache, chew a couple of fresh or dried leaves until it is a paste consistency and hold against the sore tooth. It will numb the painful area. To help with digestion and eliminate waste, steep a handful of dried leaves in a jar with apple cider vinegar, stand 7 hours, strain and seal. Take one tablespoon before each meal. A cup full of Tarragon tea may also be helpful in removing intestinal worm and as a sleep aid. With such relieving qualities, try Tarragon in a new recipe to ring in the new spring season!

Green Spring Cleaning Written by Jennifer Thomas
W
e have officially transitioned into a new season and as Spring moves into full gear it is time to think about that sometimes dreaded Springcleaning. The space you live in is a reflection of you, and deeper cleaning is important in ensuring a healthy, uncluttered and comfortable living space. Many people today are tired and overwhelmed with work, family and the daily to dos. We live in a fast paced world and keeping up with the daily household chores allows for more free time on your days off. There is even a growing popularity with reality shows about cleaning your home. Some television shows such as “Clean House,” are examples of the many Americans who are neglecting their homes of their sanitary cleaning needs. Hiring a cleaning service can be a great option. Although many think it is expensive, in actuality it is very affordable because it is a good use of your financial resources. Now your schedule opens up to include fun activities instead of having to dedicate your spare time to the neverending household chores that can only get done on the weekends.
Having a weekly, bi-monthly or monthly cleaning service assists in keeping the house in order. Regular cleaning consists of scrubbing and polishing bathrooms and kitchens, dusting furniture, vacuuming and mopping floors. You no longer need to put off doing deeper cleaning projects, as most services will do extra’s such as: base boards, doors, cabinets, light and fan fixtures, edging, vents, cob webs, windows and any other extras you need to have cleaned. Using a cleaning service that specializes in earth friendly, nontoxic products, to replace the chemicals of bleach and ammonia (which are harmful to stone, marble, granite, and our lungs) is another important choice. Formulated all-purpose cleaners using a mix of vinegar, water, lemon juice, and baking soda is one of the natural green cleaning solutions used in cleaning a client’s home or office. For wood furniture mineral oil and lemon juice gives a refreshing scent. Adding orange and lemon essential oils to the natural concoction or sprinkling dried lavender and baking soda on carpets and furniture will eliminate odors (including strong orders from pets).

THE SUN IN
ARIES Written By Robert Ayres
T
he Sun enters Aries on March 20. The movement of the Sun into Aries marks the Spring Equinox. The Ram is the first sign of the zodiac and the solar orb’s passage through this constellation begins a new 12-month cycle. The equinox initiates the beginning of the spring season. Rebirth and new beginnings are the major themes now. Nature comes alive with new life. The plant and animal kingdoms are enlivened with new vegetation and baby animals of all kinds. In the human kingdom, we feel a quickening of the life force and a sense of exhilaration. There is excitement at the prospect of new possibilities and adventures. A new cycle is moving us into the unknown. The primary keyword for Aries is I Am. Of all the signs of the zodiac it is the most dedicated to self-discovery. Our sense of individuality forms the foundation of our lives. If we don’t have a strong and correct sense of self, then we will inevitably struggle in life. We should have a feeling for who we are and be able to give expression to it in a natural way. This defining of self should not be determined by society, friends, or family. It should not be the result of outer definitions but rather an inner process of awakening and discovery. Inherent within a true sense of self is an awareness of purpose in our lives. This purpose gives meaning to our lives and is in an ongoing process of unfoldment. This will become a source of revelation as we mature. It is our inner compass that gives us direction in our life’s journey and is essential to keep us on the right track. It leads us to the fulfillment of our destiny. Each of us is a totally unique expression of divine will, love, and wisdom. This manifests as our personal thinking, feeling, and action. The conscious ongoing unfoldment of our individuality is what life is really about. Self-realization is the goal of human evolution. Aries rules this adventure of self-discovery. Mars, the planetary ruler of The Ram, is at its strength now. It embodies the archetype of the warrior and expresses through action. It is the source of our motivation, initiative, pioneering spirit, and courage. Courage is one of the primary virtues of Aries and we need it in order to deal with life’s challenges. We live in interesting times and we all need to call on our inner For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
resource of courage to effectively embrace and work through our fears. Physiologically, Aries rules the head. The brain is contained within the head and is the master control for the nervous system. The nervous system is the foundation for our consciousness. Our physical senses receive input from the outer world and we respond through mobility and action. Our head directs us in life. Aries and Mars also express through the adrenal glands. These potent endocrine glands supply us with the energy to be aggressive and competitive. Life demands that we express ourselves in dynamic action. One of the ways that we discover who we are is through what we do. If we do not have a zest for life, we will find that we do not accomplish much. If we don’t achieve much, we will have a minimal degree of selfdiscovery and self-realization. Strong, healthy adrenal glands are necessary for a fulfilling life. Iron is the metal through which Aries and Mars manifest. Iron is an important element of the blood. The blood is the carrier of the spiritual I Am at the level of the physical body. The blood is also the vehicle for the hormones and secretions of the endocrine glands. It is important that we have plenty of iron and purified blood to live life effectively. Some herbs that may be helpful in this regards are burdock root, red clover, fo ti, sassafras and yellow dock. Now is the time to use these herbal supplements to tone up your system. Check with your health practitioner to see if they are appropriate for you. Enjoy! NATURALSOLUTIONS
Natural Solutions For Sciatica Written by Ffjorren Zolfaghar
A
common complaint for many is numbness in the toes. If you’re a long distance runner and have ever experienced this sensation, you have probably heard of the Sciatic nerve as well. Runners often have problems with “Sciatica,” a generalized term for any issue derived from the Sciatic nerve. The Sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in our body. It runs from our spine, to our buttocks and hips and then down the back of each leg. Most pain associated with the Sciatic nerve often correlates with a problem around the area it covers. For example, if you have a herniated disc along your spinal column, you might also experience pain in your low back and one or both of your legs. The pain follows the Sciatic nerve. Similarly, if you have extremely tight calf muscles, you might experience pain in your low back as well. What does this have to do with a numb toe? If any part of the Sciatic nerve is compressed or pinched, you can experience numbness in your low back, legs, feet and toes. Remedying the situation can be as easy as maintaining proper posture and performing regular stretching and exercise, for example: • When you wake in the morning, try this simple hamstring stretch. • Lay flat on your back with a band or towel wrapped around one foot; the other leg is extended. • Exhale as you pull the leg with the band straight up until you feel the stretch in the back of the leg, hold for two counts, release the leg to the floor, then repeat for 8 –10 repetitions on both legs.
•Take the stretch to a point of slight discomfort, not pain. •Keep your core muscles strong with this exercise, the prone core bridge. •Lay on the floor on your stomach. Lift your body off the ground, supporting your upper body with your elbows directly under your shoulders and your forearms flat on the ground. Keep your body in a straight line from your shoulders to your heels and hold for 30 seconds. Work up to holding for 60 seconds or longer. • Keep your activities at the low-impact level like swimming, bicycling, walking, etc. • Do not sit or stand in the same position for long periods of time. • If you experience pain, take a soak in a warm bath or apply heat directly to the afflicted area. Keep in mind that to maintain good nerve function, your bones, muscles and connective tissues need to be strong and healthy. Remember the song, “your knee bone’s connected to your leg bone, your leg bone’s…” They all work together. If one is out of whack, the others will react to it. Taking calcium, magnesium and Vitamin D will aid in maintaining good bone health. While a complex of Vitamin A, natural beta carotene and Vitamin E all promote formation and metabolism of bone and connective tissue, which is needed for healing. The underlying similarity between the conditions that create numbness, is the nerve and nerve pathway. As stated, the natural remedies listed above will help overall. However if you experience chronic numbness that does not go away with stretching, exercise and general lifestyle change, please consult your physician or chiropractor. Chronic numbness is also associated with nerve degeneration, toxic nerve damage and other illnesses that you may not know you have, such as diabetes. References: 1. Balch, Phyllis. A Superhero in Disguise Apple Cider Vinegar
Written by Melissa Picoli
A
pple Cider Vinegar should be given a cape. Seriously, it should be given a beautiful golden cape, ACV written across the back with a thunderbolt, or something of the sort. It deserves recognition. It hangs out in our cupboards, often pushed aside as we reach for its smoother cousin, balsamic, or its useful relative, white wine. It’s true, balsamic is delicious, and adds to food a gourmet quality that is tough to beat; and white wine vinegar works significantly better than Super ACV for cleaning the house. However, for health and beauty, its good ol’ humble apple cider vinegar that is blessed with super powers. Apple Cider Vinegar can be used externally and internally for beautification. Internally, Apple Cider Vinegar balances our body’s pH balance, a key factor in healthy metabolism and in detoxifying. Our bodies are generally too acidic. This is due to the digestive enzymes our bodies produce to break down proteins, fats, bad food combinations and caffeine. Intuitively,
it seems adding something acidic, such as vinegar, would make matters worse, but the contrary is true. Apple Cider Vinegar is a living organism. Much like yogurt, it helps your digestive system break down things that are difficult and time consuming. With ACV, proteins and fats are broken down more efficiently, ensuring your metabolism is kept running strong and hot. Exactly what any of us watching those pounds want. To use Apple Cider Vinegar as a regular tonic, twice a day drink a mixture of one 8oz cup of room temperature water with 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar, with meals. The first few times, the taste will not be pleasant, but it becomes agreeable. Just think, as you’re gulping: Fast Metabolism. Beautiful Skin. Better Digestion. Externally, Apple Cider Vinegar is the perfect skin toner and hair rinse. Our entire skin is covered in something called “The Acid Mantle”. In keeping with the superhero theme, think of this mantle as your own precious armor against the myriad oxidants, bacteria, viruses and other microscopic aggressors. Most nuisances hit the acid mantle and either dissolve, or are barred entry into your precious dermis. Unfortunately, we are constantly making a mess of this barrier with our alkaline soaps and chlorinated water, Once disturbed, the acid mantle requires 6-8 hours before it is on full guard again. This is particularly bothersome for our face, neck, hands, and chest: areas that are regularly exposed to outside environments. ACV returns this mantle immediately. It is the skin’s perfect pH balance. To use as a toner, mix 1 part Raw, Unfiltered ACV and 1 part distilled water in a bottle. After washing, apply to skin with a cotton ball. For break-outs, soak a cotton ball in pure ACV, and press onto blemish for five minutes twice a day. Watch the inflammation go down. As a bi-weekly hair rinse, Apple Cider Vinegar breaks down chlorine and product build-up, leaving your hair shiny and soft, and more able to absorb beneficial ingredients in your conditioner. To use, simply bring your bottle of vinegar into the shower with you, skip shampoo, and rinse your hair with vinegar, massaging it into your scalp. Follow with a rich conditioner and enjoy. In so many regards, it’s Apple Cider Vinegar to the rescue.

Tantalize Your Taste Buds With Infrared Coffee Written by Suzanne Revak
A
s most coffee connoisseurs know, the most important part of the coffee process is the roasting. A lesser known fact is that conventional roasting with hot air and infrared roasting techniques yield very different results in acidity. During the coffee roasting process, natural coffee acids form, which can lead to heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach. Less acidity creates more enjoyable coffee drinking experience with fewer side effects. Roasting coffee changes the chemistry of the green coffee bean. During the roasting the beans acquire the hue and aroma of fresh roasted coffee. Coffee roasting is a chemical process by which aromatics, acids, and other flavor components are either created, balanced, or altered in a way that should augment the flavor, acidity, aftertaste and body of the coffee as desired by the roaster. Most coffee is roasted using conventional roasting techniques. Beans are placed on a flat screen conveyer and are roasted by flame-heated hot air blowing from below. Another method is to blow the flame-heated hot air through a tumbler as the beans rotate. Under both conventional methods the flame heating the air tends to burn the beans and cook them unevenly. Also, acidic compounds are still present in the beans, and at a much higher content than with infrared roasting techniques.
Only 2% of all coffee beans are specialty roasted using infrared technology. Infrared technology roasts coffee beans by increasing temperatures quickly and evenly, unlike beans roasted by flame-heated air. Studies show less acidic compounds are created with infrared roasting than with conventional. The consistent formation of brown colored compounds is highly noticeable, showing the beans are uniformly heated and never burned. The infrared roasted beans have a quick increase in the internal temperature, but suffer from less damage on the surface. Studies also reveal uniform heating even at the core. Even more note worthy is the change in the contents of citric acid, malic acid and formic acid that are naturally found in the bean. When monitored and compared to conventional roasting, infrared roasted coffee beans show changes from an earlier stage. As the roasting proceeds, the infrared roasted coffee beans contain smaller amounts of these acids. The content of aroma compounds is 25% more than that of conventional roasting and carries the same standard to the cup. The taste from the brewed hot air roasted coffee beans is similar to most conventional roasting, while the brewed infrared roasted coffee beans lack the bitter taste. Rich full flavor characteristics of coffee beans come through best when there is less acidity. In addition, more flavor means less coffee grounds are needed in make the same number of superior brewed cups. Infrared roasting technology gives a fullbodied flavor, with less acidity and a better yield. References: 1. Asic-cafe.com, 2008 2. “Boresha International, Inc. Benefits of Infrared Saunas Weight Loss & Wellness
T
wo-thirds of American adults are overweight; one in three are considered to be obese.
An integrative approach can be an effective strategy for losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight. “This is a transitional time in medicine. New therapies and treatments, once called alternative, are emerging to meet the needs of our physical, mental and spiritual health. Good health is more than your physical health because you are more than just a body,” says Dr. Brent Bauer, director of complementary and integrative medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Far Infrared Saunas are a healthy, integrative weight loss solution without exercising. Infrared saunas can burn 400-600 calories in just one 30 minute session. In the chart below is a summary of how many calories a 150 pound person normally burns in 30 minutes of exercise: • Running 590 • Rowing (peak effort) 600 • Swimming (crawl stroke) 300 • Jogging 300
Written by Michael Culbert
• Tennis (fast game) 265 • Cycling (lOmph) 225 • Walking (3.5mph) 150 In a far infrared sauna, a moderately fit person can sweat one pound of sweat in a 30 minute session, which is the equivalent of running 2-3 miles. While it is true that the weight of the water expelled in the sauna may be regained by re-hydrating with water - the calories lost will not, resulting in weight loss. Weight loss is just one of the many benefits of regular use of Far Infrared Saunas. How Do Far Infrared Saunas Work? Infrared Saunas are unlike conventional saunas, which pull sweat out of the body. Far Infrared energy penetrates up to 3 inches into the body and PUSHES sweat out of the body. As the body is heated from the inside out, it forces toxins under the skin out. The temperature of a far infrared sauna is typically between 90-120o F versus a traditional sauna which operates between 180-200o F. However, despite operating at a lower temperature, you will typically perspire far more in infrared saunas because the infrared energy penetrates

your body at a much deeper level. Fat becomes water soluble at 100o F when it begins to dissolve, move through the blood and finally is removed from the body, resulting in weight loss. Toxins are also eliminated through your skin using lower, comfortable temperatures, for rapid detoxification. Radiant heat is more effective than other heat because it warms you - not the surrounding air. A great example of infrared heat is the sun. The warmth of the heat on your skin you feel on a cold sunny day is far infrared energy. Far infrared waves vibrate at the same frequency as we do, which is why they are able to penetrate into the flesh and warm you up internally. Is your body Over ACIDIC? If you are unable to achieve weight loss or continually trying to lose that last 15 pounds you could be over acidic. Often times the body holds on to extra weight because it is toxic and in an acidic environment. When a system is too acid, the body produces more insulin than usual. The more insulin that is available, the higher chance the fat will be stored rather than burned as energy, making it
difficult for weight loss. To protect itself the body will hold onto the weight. As the toxic chemicals are removed from the body using a far infrared sauna, weight loss is inevitable.
Fountain of Youth Wellness Spa
Studies have shown that the detoxification potential of a far infrared sauna is 3 times greater than a regular sauna. When analyzing the water content of sweat in a traditional hot air sauna it was 95-97%. Conversely the water content of sweat in a far infrared sauna is about 80-85%. The remaining 15-20% contains toxic substances such as lead, aluminum and fluoride. Reduce Cellulite! Far Infrared heat can assist in breaking down cellulite. Cellulite is a gel-like substance made up of fat, water and wastes which are trapped in pockets below the skin. Profuse sweating helps clear this form of unwanted debris from the body. Because the heat penetration of infrared saunas is over twice that of conventional saunas and up to ten times the level of heat in these tissues an Infrared Sauna can be significantly more effective than a conventional sauna. TOP 10 REASONS TO USE AN INFRARED SAUNA 1. Weight Loss 2. Detoxify Effect (improve health by ridding your body of toxins) 3. Cardiovascular conditioning (can decrease heart failure and hypertension) 4. Alleviates Muscle and Joint Pain (great for arthritis and rheumatism sufferers.) 5. Relieves Stress 6. Improved Immune System 7. Improved Skin Tone and Elasticity 8. Helps Skin Problems; helps heal scars, burns, acne, eczema, psoriasis 9. Reduce Cellulite 10. Improves male sexual function.

Life’s Second Half: The Adventure Inward
Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
”..we cannot live the afternoon of life according to the programme of life’s morning–for what was great in the morning will be little at evening, and what in the morning was true will at evening become a lie.” Carl Jung Midlife is an important period of transition in most people’s lives. In the “first half” of life the developmental goal of the personality is the maturation of the ego and our adaptation to the demands of society. In youth we are educated, find work, pursue careers, and perhaps start a family, raise children, etc. If all goes well, we enter midlife with a stable sense of identity and place within the larger community.
sonality so that its complementary parts are more available for use and guidance. If not for the strong ego we developed in life’s first half, we would not be able to shoulder the demands that the psyche places upon us in the second half of life. Weaknesses are strengthened when they have something stable and solid to push against.
This midlife transition can be both humbling and transforming. It is humbling because we are exploring a new world and sometimes re-experiencing the awkwardness of childhood. It is transforming because as we integrate new abilities and perspectives, our sense of self and world are changed. In youth the ego is expanding in strength and influence. It is also natural during this, “first half” “It is natural and psychologi- Typically, it follows the well-posted paths period of our lives to utilize and develop the more prominent attributes of our innate cally healthy for mature adults of society, perhaps gathering accolades personality. The famous psychologist Erik Erikson observed that the midlife years (roughly 35 to 65) are generally approached in one of two ways. People can stagnate in self-absorption and egocentricity, or they can shoulder the torch of higher values, meaning, and vision for their own development and that of succeeding generations. He called this latter path “generativity.” In the first half of life our generativity is often biological and procreative. We grow physically and we may bring new physical life into the world. But at midlife and beyond, our generativity gradually shifts from the biological sphere to the spiritual. From ego to soul, from the present to the future, from our immediate family to the world family. The deepest form of generativity is that which turns and plants the soil of our own soul. Without a living relationship with the core of our being, our outer pursuits can become just so much restless activity and white noise. Erikson observed that people who are able to negotiate the death/rebirth process of the midlife transition are more likely to enter their later years with a certain integrity of character and faith in life. Those who are unable, or unwilling, to pass through the transforming fires of midlife often approach late life with despair and a depleted sense of life’s meaning.
of the personality, creativity, and the nurturance of meaningful relationships.
“The neurotic disturbances of adult years have this in common, that they betray the attempt to carry the psychic dispositions of youth beyond the threshold of the so-called years of discretion.” Carl Jung
References: 1. Erikson, Erik H. Identity and the Life Cycle. W. W. Norton & Co., NY 1994. 2. Jung, Carl G. Memories, Dreams, Reflections. Random House, Inc., NY 1963.
One example of misdirected and derailed generativity is seen in the growing problem of internet pornography by midlife and older men. Viewed symbolically, sex is the generative union of opposites. Biologically, it produces a new generation of people. Psychologically, it can represent the integration of the complementary dimensions of the psyche, leading to growth of the personality. When older men or women become fixated on the outer biological/physical expression of this process, they short-circuit and derail the generative energy of the creative psyche. The inner drive to consciousness and transformation is thus diverted from its true goal. Of course, encouraging adults to maintain the worldview of a twenty-year-old is big business, one example being the sale of impotency medications to senior men. When the body does not behave as the ego would like, we “pathologize” the body. Yet, for many men, impotence probably reflects the psyche’s effort to redirect their generative energy into the further maturation
“From the middle of life onward, only he remains vitally alive who is ready to die with life.” Carl Jung The gambling industry is another example of the way in which the generative instincts of seniors can be effectively diverted for others’ profit. To live life well involves taking risks and leaps of faith. And this is no less true, maybe even more true, in the second half of life. To accept midlife’s journey inward is to venture into the unknown of our soul and that of the universe in search of life’s gold. But when the need to “go for the gold” and to make a leap of faith gets projected onto money and games of chance, the instinctual drive to live life fully has missed its mark. Probably we all have a “bucket list” with desires and challenges, both outward and inward, that we need to embrace in order to discover and live the deeper purpose and meaning of our lives. “Take your risks and place your bets at the table of life, letting what needs to die, die and what needs to live, live with abundance.”

BOOKREVIEW dramatic. His tumors disappeared and he resumed a normal life-until the newspapers published an announcement by the AMA which stated that the drug was “worthless for the treatment of cancer.” After reading this, Mr. Wright fell ill again, returned to the hospital and died two days later. His doctor concluded that the effect of his belief cured him, and his loss of belief caused his death. Although most oncologists believe that spontaneous remissions are due to some unidentified biological mechanism, Dr. Bruce Lipton, in his book of the same name, would say that this story is an example of the Biology of Belief. After all, a strong positive belief may trigger the unidentified biological mechanism which leads to a cure. The authors of this book are attempting to explain how and why beliefs work this magic. They offer a practical model of how the brain works that will help you understand your own beliefs and the nature of reality. They have found that once our beliefs are established, we rarely challenge their validity, even when faced with contradictory evidence.

r. Newberg opens the first chapter of this book with the true story of how a patient shrunk his cancer tumors to half their size in two days because he believed that an injection of a new experimental drug would cure him. He was in stage four cancer with a body riddled with tumors, but the media was touting this new drug, so he persuaded his physician to include him in the test group. To the amazement of the doctors, this particular patient, whom they call Mr. Wright, was the only one who improved on that drug. After ten days all signs of the disease had disappeared and he returned home in perfect health. Two months later the media reported that the FDA believed the drug was ineffective. Mr. Wright heard the reports and immediately became ill. The tumors returned and he was readmitted to the hospital. The doctor in charge was now convinced that Mr. Wright’s belief in the effectiveness of the drug had healed him, so he decided to test his theory by telling Mr. Wright a lie: that a new “super-refined, double-strength” version of the drug was guaranteed to produce better results. Mr. Wright then received injections of sterile water, which he thought was the miracle drug. Once again, his recovery was For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
Dr. Newberg was one of the research scientists featured in the movie/documentary What the Bleep Do We Know? (2004) as well as the documentary Religulous (2008). He states that, “The anger and prejudice generated by beliefs such as extreme Fundamentalism can permanently damage your brain.” On Dr. Newberg’s website you can download research papers on brain science and the effects of beliefs on the brain dating from 1992. We cannot escape the power and influence of our beliefs. They can make the difference between life and death, health and illness. This book brings additional clarity to the emerging science of consciousness and even explains how these new findings about the brain mesh with certain spiritual traditions. Why We Believe What We Believe is divided into three major parts: How the Brain Makes Our Reality; Childhood Development and Morality; and Spiritual Beliefs and the Brain. We really do see the world, not as it is, but as we are. This is even further evidence for all of us to look at our beliefs and see if they are valid in this modern world, for everything we do and everything we think about engages a belief in some way. According to author David Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. in his ground-breaking book Power Vs. Force, an individual with a high Scale of Consciousness vibration is likely to be free of most negative emotions and is then also able to experience life unfolding in ways that correspond to ones dreams. Through the use of kinesiology --often referred to as muscle testing-- Hawkins developed a scale of measurement indicating how a person’s emotions can be calibrated to an emotional vibration numerically. This Scale of Consciousness is also referenced in Colin Tipping’s book Radical Manifestation, The Fine Art of Creating the Life You Want.

Unconditional Love, A Religious Approach
Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar
U
nconditional love: A love that has no boundaries or limits. A love that is complete, the dictionary definition. If this is true, then what happens when that love goes away like when we lose a child, sibling or parent? There is much negativity and anguish wrapped around the idea of losing love or a loved one. But if unconditional love is the be-all end-all of love, the highest rank within the love category, then how could we ever truly lose it? It is at that point in which we may look toward a powerful set of convictions for our answers, those being our faith.
person found happiness with someone else or something else, then it becomes a winning point for humanity.
If you are Buddhist, you might say that loving something is being able to let go because it was never yours to begin with. A person who is close to you is not your possession. They are beings that exist with you. If the love you share is a higher form of love, then it will only bring happiness throughout the cycle of life, including death. It should not bring pain or sorrow. In fact, that is the opposite of the “Ultimate Love,” which is the enlightened state of love in the Buddhist realm. It is love without attachment.
This ideology is positive and seems to breed an awareness of kinship and trust. However, if you believe in the Christian God, you might not agree with all of the Buddhist attributes. According to St. John, “God is love.” In one of C.S. Lewis’ books titled, “The four loves,” he categorizes love into Affection, Friendship, Eros and Charity. Although each stands alone, they all intertwine. They also obtain two distinctive love qualities: Gift love and Need love.
Attachment is similar to possession. For example, if you lost your cell phone, your laptop or your wallet you would probably get upset. Some of us might even cry. From the Buddhist standpoint, those items are only material possessions. Many of us give our material objects importance, hence we become attached to them. Therefore, when we lose these items our emotions and feelings are involved and we become angry, upset or sad. If similar negative feelings overwhelm your senses after death takes someone close to you, then you have created an attachment with that person as well. The Buddhist view would prompt you to move forward with peace and relish in the life they lived and will experience once again. If you lose a person to a break-up or divorce, the same would hold true. If that For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
It might be difficult to imagine forgiving someone for infidelity because they found happiness with someone besides yourself, but the Buddhist path directs each of us toward empathy for all. It is a way of looking at life or love as a global community that feeds on compassion from all who reside there. The common ground of achievement is to partake in actions that will create serenity for all within this non-inherent existence.
He describes Gift love as the love that motivates a person to act in ways that will benefit the well-being of his or her family, that being work or planning for the future. Need love is that which sends a person to a loved one’s arms when they are lonely or frightened. Lewis compared Gift love to Divine love or Godly love. He shows this through an example of the Father giving to the Son, who gives Himself to the World and in giving to the World, gives back to the Father and so on. What is interesting about this concept is its relationship to Buddhism. If a Godly or Christian love is giving yourself to the world, to your creator and to yourself, then your actions toward love and compassion are universal. There are differences within each religion, however the main goal for both leans toward an all-encompassing love.

Potty Training For Pets

ogs drool, cats rule – but both need to eliminate at some point in time. As neat and composed as cats appear, they’re not that much different from dogs. Potty training is important and should start early with lessons and appropriate products to have a pet that is well adjusted and responsive. Lessons teach your animal how to learn, behave and eliminate appropriately. Training should be gentle and fun, with firm, clear parameters, to yield a secure and responsive animal that lives to the rules of your household. Successful lessons address house training challenges with techniques and suggestions to obtain success. An indispensible house training program teaches about the “toilet area.” This is an area (designated by the owner) that an animal goes to relieve itself. This is invaluable to most pet owners, since everyone hates “poop patrol” for animal land mines around the yard. Inappropriate elimination can be triggered by a number of reasons. House training difficulties include: - Training by accident or the wrong type of training

- Physical limitations or Age (young or old) - Territorial marking and Dominance issues
•Doody Dangler eliminates the need to carry the bag of doody. It attaches to the leash and carries the load, leaving your hands free and clear.
- New home triggers - Emotional issues or Submissive behavior - Diet changes or nutritional Having a quality diet, and the proper tools or products to assist you in house training is important. Severe house training cases may take eight to twelve weeks to address, but if you get the right help, and use the right tools, you can usually eliminate this problem.
