COVERSTORY

As the clouds continue to roll in over the Sierras, one wonders if “Punxsutawney’s” prediction for an early spring was correct. Here in northern Nevada and the eastern Sierras, we find ourselves still shivering. I guess on a positive note, they say shivering speeds up our metabolism. As I enter the month of May, anticipation for the coming lazy days of summer, and weekends spent exploring and hiking near Lake Tahoe, bring a smile to my face. Isn’t that why we live here? The beautiful geography of the mountains, rich in color of greens, blues and sage, and the close proximity to San Francisco, Wine Country, Yosemite National Park and the ocean. All within a four hour drive, now that’s heaven right here on earth! This month I would like to welcome Teresa Howell to the magazine; her monthly column entitled “The Rough Patch” is all about gardening tips and family musings. You will enjoy her lively, whimsical upbeat writing style, I do. Read about boundaries, and how to grow a gifted child, in Coach Carl’s article “The Greatness Expander.” Since May typically leads into allergy season, you will find Jim Kenney’s tips on how to ward off allergies naturally, helpful. Dr. Gerber and Dr. Rutherford keep us up-to date on preventing and solving health concerns, addressing diabetes and neuropathy. Andy Drymalski and June Milligan explore alternative ways of viewing ourselves and those around us by looking at our belief systems, behaviors and our thoughts. Treat yourself or your mom this Mother’s Day with a new facial “spritzer” and a relaxing massage. Happy May and Happy Mother’s Day to our favorite moms! HB

his month, we used a beautiful photo of a Stand Up Paddleboarder, in Sand Harbor on Lake Tahoe. Stand Up Paddleboarding is becoming the fastest growing sport in the world. Look for the article “Stand Up Paddle” to learn more about this fun and easy-to-do sport! Beyond our cover, the month of May signifies growth and renewal. As we rapidly approach summer, we begin to shed our “fat,” so to speak. During the winter months, especially in colder climates, our bodies naturally bulk up, or hold on to that extra fat, in order to retain heat. When spring rolls around, and we become more active, the fat is no longer needed. This is true for our mental, emotional and spiritual state of being as well. During the winter months, each aspect of our being is focused on its primal instinct of survival; we become more machine-like, pushing ourselves through sleepy days, while longing for light and warmth. Now is the time to breathe in the life around you. Let go of the gloomy days that recently filled your past…try something new. Pick up a Stand Up Paddleboard, give wheatgrass a try or let laughter fill your lungs as you engage in Improv theatre. Whatever you do, make sure to pause every once in a while; and become witness to the ebb and flow of creation that perpetuates your journey of life. HB

Vulvo-what-ia? Written By Dr. Tory Clark
he terminology surrounding vulvar pain can be quite confusing because most vulvar conditions share similar symptoms. This article will cover three of these conditions. Beginning with vulvodynia, a woman will most likely experience chronic, spontaneous, generalized pain in the vulvar area (the labia, clitoris, and vaginal opening). Additionally, burning or irritation associated with vulvodynia might be so uncomfortable that sitting still for long periods or even having sex becomes unbearable. The condition can go on for months or years. Vulvodynia was not coined until 1983; and through the famous TV series Sex in the City, the public was introduced to the term when one of the shows characters was diagnosed with this condition. Surveys show that vulvodynia is rising; with one study reporting at least two hundred thousand women in the United States have significant vulvar discomfort that profoundly reduces their quality of life. Until recently, doctors did not recognize this as a real pain syndrome because there are virtually no physical signs of disease. Currently, researchers are looking to uncover the causes of vulvodynia. The most promising theory thus far, is injury to the pudendal nerve, where most of the nerve supply to the vulva comes from. Dyspareunia is pain upon intercourse, and vaginismus occurs when the vaginal muscles spasm during an attempted entry of an object such as a dilator, vibrator, penis, tampon and/ or speculum. Physiological factors such as vaginal infections (yeast, trichomonas, vaginitis, urinary tract), endometriosis, or an injury through abuse or rape can cause dyspareunia or vaginismus. Insufficient hormones can reduce lubrication causing dyspareunia as well. If you are experiencing any of the aforementioned, your gynecologist should address them.

Be More Open, Feel Secure & Accepting of Yourself Sexually.
From a psychological perspective, some women have experienced sexually traumatic events or feelings that cause vulvar pain. The following is a list of some of these events: religious or strict upbringing that viewed sex (or masturbation) as wrong; sexual abuse; fear of sex; previous experiences of painful sex; not enjoying sex with partner; witnessing abuse in the family of origin; threatening, domineering, or invasive parents; negative experiences associated with menstruation; fear of pregnancy caused by negative comments or false myths about giving birth; and poor body-image. Quite often, our bodies try to tell us about changes we need in our lives, relationships or society. The message may then be delivered through an outward display of pain. Working with a Clinical Sexologist in order to understand the psychological connection of any of these events to vulvar pain would be an effective treatment plan to undergo. HB

’m blown away by the clean, breathable and very polished look and feel of the April 2011 edition of Healthy Beginnings Magazine~! The new typeface, spacing and layout appeared to have subtly shifted from previous editions, creating an airy and healthy appearance to the magazine. The articles - as always - are fresh, up-to-date and highly informative. Especially, the article written by June Milligan on “Who Are These People and Why Am I Attracting Them?” was reaffirming for me: “Change [your] story. Leave that old stuff behind and focus on what [you] DO want.” I DO want to continue reading Healthy Beginnings Magazine! Again, Dawn, Thank You for delivering a powerfully informative and professional magazine to our place of business! Most repsectfully HB yours,

Integrative Strategies for Diabetes Management
Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
L
ast month’s column was devoted to diabetes prevention. Weight loss, exercise, avoidance of fast foods and non-organic foods with many toxic concentrates such as POPs (persistent organic pollutants), PCB’s, heavy metals and solvents, statistically reduces your chances of having adult onset diabetes. However, if you are already diabetic, it is important to know about a broad array of nutritional supplements and herbs, many of which have been used for millennia, to improve blood sugar. Many of these herbs also reduce cholesterol and improve HDL/LDL ratios and reduce triglycerides. Berberis herb found in Barbary bark, 500 mg three times per day, works as well as metformin (Glucophage) in lowering blood sugar with no side effects (diarrhea). Bitter melon, Mormordica charantia, also known as balsam pear, is a tropical vegetable widely cultivated in Asia, Africa and South America for treating diabetes and has been clearly established in both experimental and clinical studies. It is more potent than tolbutamide as a blood sugar lowering agent. It can potentiate the effects of other blood sugar lowering drugs and may lead to low blood sugar. Cinnamon has very positive clinical outcomes for lowering
blood sugar from 18 to 29 percent, with doses from one to six grams (thousand milligrams) per day in a Pakistani study. Cinnamon has been touted to triple insulin’s efficiency. Go online for a comprehensive review of Cinnamon; there are several subspecies, with varying claims. Stevia, the organic sweetener from South America, has beneficial effects on glucose tolerance and its use as a sweetener can reduce the use of sugar. Pterocarpus marsupium, Indian Kino, looks like dried blood (Dragon’s blood), long used in Indian medicine as a remedy for diabetes and has been shown to regenerate functional pancreatic beta cells. Another classic herb from India is Gymnema sylvestre, at 500 mg per day. Nutritional supplements have many supportive functions for sugar metabolism. Chromium, up to 6,000 mcg per day for 30 days and then reduced to 2,000 mcg maintenance, has been employed by Jonathan Wright, MD for weakened adrenals and diabetes. He has a high dose supplement (1,000 mcg. per drop) available from his Tahoma, Washington Clinic Pharmacy and recommends that it be taken in water to avoid staining the teeth purple, especially in the elderly.

Vitamin B12- injections have been shown to improve diabetic retinopathy. Magnesium levels tend to be low in diabetics; and supplementing improves various measures of glycemic control and neuropathy, burning, painful extremities which can lead to gangrene. Magnesium can also prevent cardiovascular complications (heart attack, stokes, gangrene) of diabetes and should be included in a supportive nutritional program for diabetes. Vitamin D plays a role in insulin secretion; low serum levels are associated with an increased risk of diabetes. In a double-blind study of women, with insulin resistance and low vitamin D levels, administration of 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 for six months improved insulin resistance compared with placebo. Many other nutrients have well documented, mostly positive effects, on diabetes especially vitamin C, which can become deficient in diabetes and lead to capillary fragility, small vessel disease and slow the progression of diabetic retinopathy (blindness) and nephropathy (kidney failure). All the B vitamins, E complex, Vitamin K, Acetyl l Carnitine, Vitamin A and pancreatic enzymes all have positive studies supporting their use in diabetes care. HB May 2011

A fragrant, evergreen, needle-like plant, natively grown in the Mediterranean, Rosmarinus Officinalis (rosemary), translates to “Dew of the Sea.” The ancients were privy to the qualities of this fragrant herb as early as 500 B.C. Greek students would wear wreaths laden with the aromatic flora to stimulate and improve their memory. Recent studies established that the Greeks obviously had insight into the numerous traits of this amazing plant. The results showed that rosemary contains an ingredient (carnosic acid) that fights off free radical damage in the brain, and protects from contributors of stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Published research in both The Journal of Neurochemistry and Nature Reviews Neuroscience reveals that CA (carnosic acid) activates a

signaling pathway that protects brain cells from free radical damage. Dr. Zhu, from the State University of New Jersey, conducted research on the benefits of rosemary extract to de-activate excess estrogen, which contributes to breast cancer. The research showed that a two percent concentration of rosemary extract significantly reduced estrogen production. The curative herb offers a healthy and safe alternative to the drug Tamoxifen, given as an estrogen blocker to women with breast cancer. Other studies reveal that properties in rosemary can deactivate toxins and eliminate them from the liver, before they incur damage. As if all of this is not enough, further research indicates that rosemary can increase blood flow and can improve kidney function; it also helps lower blood pressure, promotes cellular respiration and detoxification, increases alertness, decrease anxiety, combats water retention, reduces swelling and it treats acne, dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis.
Moving your health from the inside out takes work, due to the harmful chemicals and additives that are loaded into most cosmetics and personal care items. On average, the American consumer is exposed to more than 10,000 damaging chemicals in personal care items alone. Everything from shampoo, soap, lotion and lip gloss can be full of nasty harmful ingredients. Nature provides us with healthy alternatives, and rosemary is one of safe choices in our arsenal. When applied topically, this incredible herb aids in the regeneration of skin cells, helping you maintain skin buoyancy. It tones and firms sagging skin, and also aids in preventing wrinkles. Who knew that a common seasoning could do so much for one’s health, as well as keeping skin looking and feeling young and beautiful? Once again, nature’s own remedies prove to be best! P
eople who suffer with chronic vertigo, dizziness or balance problems are often told that the issue is with their inner ear or their sinus; when, in fact, balance disorders can be caused by a complex combination of neurological, hormonal, immune, mechanical, and nutritional problems as well. There are several different kinds of balance disorders. There is vertigo with spinning. There is vertigo without spinning. There is ataxia, which is like clumsiness. There is disequilibrium, in which your balance is off--you bump into things. There’s visual vertigo, where you walk into an area and you see something that overwhelms your brain and makes you feel like you’re spinning. There is Ménière’s disease, which causes imbalance, hearing loss, nausea and tinnitus (ringing in ears). There is also just plain dizziness, car sickness and more; and these are all individualized variations of the same neurologic and metabolic mechanisms. The main thing to remember when trying to help a patient with severe vertigo or dizziness is you have to look deeper into the causative mechanisms when traditional treatments don’t solve the problems. Good balance and steadiness is a result of a complex interaction between a couple of different systems: your visual system and what your eyes are seeing; your muscle joint feedback system and what your body is doing; and your vestibular system (your inner ear) and what your head is doing. When all of these systems are playing together nicely, and they calibrate properly, you have good balance. When they don’t, you don’t. The brain (mainly the cerebellum, frontal lobe and parietal lobe) is also a big factor
in helping with balance and equilibrium, along with the inner ear. Many people who suffer from chronic vertigo or dizziness also suffer from a problem in those areas of the brain called the Functional Disconnection Syndrome (FDS), for reasons that will soon become apparent. Your cerebellum is at the back of your brain. It’s right at the base of your skull. The cerebellum coordinates everything-your balance, your body movements, your spine movements, your eye movements, even your thought processes. The parietal lobe of the brain must synthesize, or put together, all the information coming from your eyes, inner ear, muscles and joints. This coordination of brain function creates the “map,” so your body and nervous system know where you are, where you’re moving, what direction you’re moving in, and how fast. When one of these areas starts to weaken or deactivate it doesn’t pull its weight and all parts of the brain including the cerebellum, frontal lobe, parietal lobe and inner ear disconnect (FDS), and you become imbalanced. To reconnect this system, the newest research in brain and metabolic technologies have found that you can “reset” the brain with numerous, targeted and specific brain-based “activations” or exercises, which can strengthen the weakened areas and bring these synchronized neurological areas into balance.
cause improper fuel to the cell; the main fuels being glucose and oxygen. So, depending on the individual issues that the vertigo or dizziness patient is suffering, specific testing should be done to determine their oxygen and glucose levels, along with a myriad of other items that should be tested, based on the patient’s history and condition. Once the results are in, treatment can proceed with dietary alterations and natural supplementation support. Further non-drug methods can be utilized to activate the weakened brain cells and bring corrective long-term balance to the system and to the balance disorder sufferer. HB

However, the involved brain cells in the “weakened” areas must be healthy in order to achieve balance. Neurons become unhealthy due to various stresses and metabolic imbalances (i.e. diabetes, Hashimoto’s, thyroid issues, etc), which

A solution to Chronic Pain
opportunity for inclusion of curcumin in brain-protective and mood-enhancing formulas. With regard to pain, turmeric root and curcumin specifically show superstar status. In addition to curcumin, turmeric root also contains other anti-inflammatory compounds including cineol, alpha-pinene, borneol, caffeic acid, caryophyllene, eugenol, limonene, and vanillic acid. In any good turmericderived pain product, these agents would also support the activity of curcumin. Like the NSAID’s, curcumin inhibits COX2. But unlike the NSAID’s, it does not do so selectively. Instead, curcumin also balances the activity of other key factors in inflammation, including NF-kappaB, PPAR Gamma transcription factors, and 5-LOX. By inhibiting the activity of all these aspects of inflammation, curcumin delivers far superior antiinflammatory and pain-relieving activity than most drugs. The role of inflammation in pain is pretty straightforward. Any of a variety of insults can cause inflammation in the tissues of our bodies. External insults like burns, bites, scrapes, stings, cuts and bruises cause skin tissue to swell as protective fluids pour into damaged tissue between cells. Nerves may also be directly hurt. All of this activity is accompanied by pain. This is also the case with internal injuries that may be diet-related or the result of wear and tear. With its superior anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin can help with pain relief. But curcumin is rather poorly absorbed. In cultures where turmeric root is used by the kilo in the evening’s curry, people consume very large amounts of curcumin. Thus, they absorb a good amount of curcumin, bound to various dietary fats and oils also present in foods. Curcumin is soluble and better absorbed when conveyed in fat; and a number of Ayurvedic medicinal recipes call for the use of turmeric root cooked in fatty buffalo milk. When turmeric root is cooked in a curry along with vegetable oil, curcumin mixes with the oil and enhances absorption. By helping with pain relief, and doing so naturally and safely; you can lift the veil of darkness that chronic pain engenders, which transforms peoples’ understanding of the benefits of natural remedies through positive experience. Natural, plant-based remedies are still the most widely employed health supporters on earth, far more than over-the-counter and prescription drugs. HB

An estimated 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, according to the American Pain Foundation. That’s a lot of pain; and that adds up to a lot of drug use, notably the category called NSAID’s, or non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen, aspirin and naproxen are over-the-counter examples of this class of drug. These drugs inhibit COX1 and COX2 enzymes, major factors in pain. But they cause stomach damage--even bleeding ulcers--and are implicated in over 16,000 deaths from side effects per year. Then, there are prescription drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex, designed to inhibit activity of only the COX2 enzyme. They do accomplish this, but along the way, they can also cause liver and kidney damage--and increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. That’s a bad deal. Medicines should heal, not hurt. They should promote life, not take it away. In part, due to disappointment with drugs, and in part due to a belief that natural remedies are safer than most pharmaceuticals, many people seek natural remedies to alleviate pain. But where do they look? Enter curcumin, a derivative of turmeric root. Traditionally, turmeric, or Curcuma longa, was widely used for food, cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Turmeric provides the distinctive yellow color to curry, and is used to color butter, cheese and other foods. In India’s traditional system of Ayurveda, turmeric enjoys a long history of use for the treatment of respiratory conditions, which include asthma and allergies, coughs, sinusitis; it is also used for liver disorders, rheumatism and to treat diabetic wounds. Compounds in turmeric most responsible for its broad uses are the curcuminoids, notably curcumin. Curcumin demonstrates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, anticarcinogenic and antimicrobial activity, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective and antiarthritic benefits. Curcumin accounts for approximately three percent of the dry weight of turmeric root. Whole turmeric root and concentrated curcumin demonstrate great safety. In fact, no studies in animals or humans have discovered any toxicity associated with the use of either, even at very high doses. Turmeric is consumed in very large quantities daily in various parts of Asia and Southeast Asia, imparting only benefits. In other words, curcumin is utterly safe. As if all the other science on curcumin were insufficient, recent studies also suggest that curcumin may offer significant cognitive-enhancing and antidepressant benefits. These benefits appear primarily due to curcumin’s capacity to promote the activity of neuroprotective factors in the brain, and to regulate certain neurotransmitters. This research suggests even broader uses for curcumin than previously considered, and creates Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

BOOKREVIEW
Power VS. Force:
The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior By David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D.
Source, and the very nature of reality. The book is divided into three sections: Tools, Work and Meaning. Under Tools, some Chapter headings are Test Results and Interpretation, Levels of Human Consciousness and The Source of Power. Under Work we can read about the experiments dealing with Power in Politics, Social Power and the Human Spirit. The section on Meaning includes the Evolution of Consciousness, Spiritual Struggle and the Search for Truth. On a scale of 1 to 1000, Dr. Hawkins says that although only 15 percent of the world’s population is above the critical consciousness level of 200, the collective power of that 15 percent has the “weight” to counterbalance the negativity of the remaining 85 percent of the population. He estimates that one individual at level 700 counterbalances 70 million individuals below level 200. The level of truth originally expounded by Jesus Christ calibrates on Hawkin’s scale at 1000, but by the year 325 it had dropped to 498 because of the changes made to his teachings at the Council of Nicea. The level of truth of the teachings of the Buddha was also originally at 1000. These teachings have deteriorated less than any other religion, now standing at approximately 900. Within any religion, fundamentalist sects always calibrate lowest, often operating at the same level of consciousness as criminality. An individual’s level of consciousness is determined by the principles to which one is committed. To maintain progress in consciousness, there can be no wavering from principle, or the individual will fall back to a lower level. Dr. Hawkins is co-author of Orthomolecular Psychiatry (with Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling) and has written approximately ten other books on consciousness, psychology, enlightenment and spirituality. Reviewer’s Note: The “holding” of a high vibrational frequency of consciousness is utilized every day at the Casa in Abadiania, Brazil where John of God heals every kind of ailment, emotional as well as physical. The “current rooms” are occupied by many people who are meditating or visualizing the end result of healing, while the Entities (spirits of doctors and high-consciousness beings) temporarily occupy John’s body. Without the help of the people in the “current rooms” who are holding the high frequencies (which have been photographed as steaks of lightning or as a “fog” around the healer and ones who have come to be healed) there would be dramatically fewer successes. The people meditating in the “current rooms” therefore hold the “current,” the “intention” for healing, which is a very high-consciousness intention. Dr. Hawkins book Power VS. Force is a clear explanation of the inner power we manifest or waste, depending on our intention and our decided-upon way-of-being in the world. HB
Ask yourself, “What if everyone had access to a simple yes-or-no answer to any question--a quick and true answer?” From simple questions such as, “Is that really what happened at school today?” or “Is this a safe investment?”, or “Is John Doe guilty as charged?” to “Does candidate X honestly intend to fulfill his campaign promises?” one could determine the truth. The author explains that this access would be the most fundamental change in human knowledge since the beginning of society; the transformations it would bring about--in fields from communications to ethics, in every detail of daily existence--would be so profound that it’s hard to even conceive of what life would be like in that “new era of truth.” The world as we know it would be irrevocably changed. Dr. Hawkins spent many years using the method of applied kinesiology to ask thousands of people questions about the subjects he was most interested in. Applied kinesiology was named and explained by Dr. George Goodheart after his finding that beneficial nutritional supplements would increase the strength of certain indicator muscles in the body, whereas non-beneficial items would cause those muscles to suddenly weaken. In other words, an essential vitamin held in the hand would cause the muscle to remain strong, while sugar or aspartame would cause the muscle to immediately go weak. The implication of this finding was that at a level far below conscious opinion, the body “knew” what was healthy and what was not. Later, Dr. John Diamond refined this specialty into a new process he called behavioral kinesiology. His surprising discovery was that indicator muscles would strengthen or weaken in the presence of positive or negative emotional and intellectual stimuli, as well as physical stimuli. For instance, a smile will make you test strong while the phrase, “I hate you” will make you test weak. Dr. Diamond wrote a best seller in 1979 entitled Your Body Doesn’t Lie, in which he explained exactly how to do what is now called “muscle testing.” Around that same time, Dr. Hawkins began research on the kinesiological response to truth and falsehood. What seems to be at work here is a form of communal consciousness or as Jung would describe it, a “database of consciousness.” He eventually developed a means of calibrating a scale of relative truth by which intellectual positions, statements or ideas could be rated on a range of 1 to 1000. After 20 years of this type of research, Hawkins was able to develop a “map” of the geog- To purchase the book, go to www.amazon.com. raphy of man’s experience, allowing a comprehensive analysis of the emotional and spiritual development of individuals and societies. HIDDEN IN PLAIN S would feel “if you had it right now” is an important step to a much quicker manifestation of what is desired. Believing you can have it is important too; and if you know you will achieve it, that is even more powerful.
o where are we now? Five years after the movie The Secret burst onto the scene and became an instant worldwide phenomenon, and twenty-six years after Esther Hicks began teaching and publishing material on the Law of Attraction, where are we now? Have we internalized the fact that everything is made up of vibrational frequencies, slowed down from consciousness and thought then slowed down to light, and then slowed further to solid matter? Physicists have demonstrated this in their laboratories. They know that everything is vibration, and that an observer’s thoughts have a profound effect on the outcome of any experiment.
Many years ago I had a friend who wanted a yellow Lamborghini. He had clipped a picture from a magazine and had it framed and placed on his desk, where he could see it every day. Life went along, and whenever he saw the picture, he imagined himself driving that beautiful car. He moved to Los Angeles, got some additional education and landed a very good job. He was making a substantial salary and after some time, decided to look for his dream car. He went to a Lamborghini dealership in Beverly Hills and was shown a pre-owned black car that he could actually afford. He and the salesman took a ride in the car and he loved it. But it wasn’t yellow. After returning from their drive, my friend asked to look at the service book to see if the car had received regular service. When he opened it, a paper fell out. He was astonished to see that it was the same picture he had on his desk! On the bottom of the picture was a handwritten note explaining that this car had been featured in a monthly edition of a well-known auto magazine. He asked the salesman if the car had ever been painted. They looked underneath and saw traces of yellow paint! Yes, it had been painted black. The car he had just driven was not only like the car he wanted, it was the exact same car as in his picture. He had been drawn to that city, to that particular dealership, and to that car. He had never stopped believing that he would drive a yellow Lamborghini, so the combination of the Law of Attraction and the Law of Deliberate Intent worked together to attract to him exactly the car he wanted. He bought the car and had it painted yellow. The power of focused intent was certainly proven to him that day.
But outside of the laboratory, our daily challenge is to consciously and steadily apply this knowledge to our daily life, in order to experience more of what we want, rather than allowing our thoughts to just randomly settle only on what we observe or hear. That creates more of what we are observing and hearing, which may be unwanted. One of the biggest stumbling blocks is the fact that we want instant gratification but have not developed the mental discipline to make that happen. Part of the problem is lack of knowledge of how this works; but now, there are dozens of very good books, websites, CDs and seminars that teach this information. There are even tools to help us develop mental discipline. It is a shame to have this kind of power and not be disciplined enough to use it. Almost everyone has heard of the Law of Attraction. But that’s just the first law. The Law of Deliberate Intent is the second. After becoming focused enough to decide what we want; whether it’s health or a satisfying relationship, or something physical like a new car, we must hold the expectation of that thing, comfortably and steadily, in the back of our minds. That sends out the vibrational frequencies that will attract it. The thoughts you’re sending out then begin to “think,” and begin to attract other “like” thoughts. Visualization of the end result is a powerful tool to speed that along. The desire is the engine of this process, but emotion is the fuel. So seeing the end product and feeling the way you Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
The Law of Allowing is the third major law. Are you going to allow yourself to have what you want? When you’re thinking about your desire, and are feeling pleasure from the thought, your thought vibration is in alignment with your desire…and we call that allowing. But when you really want Continued on Page 21.

something, and are feeling disappointment that you don’t have it yet, or remembering a time when someone told you that you didn’t deserve nice things, or that you were not smart enough to ever have nice things, that means you’re focused on the opposite of your desire. In doing so, you are introducing a non-matching vibration into the mix, called resistance. The degree of negative emotion you are experiencing shows you the degree of resistance you are creating. If you pay attention to how you feel during the day, you will begin to allow your wonderful emotional guidance system to show you whether you are sending out resistance vibes or allowing vibes. Monitoring your thoughts becomes a habit, as you develop a disciplined mind; but in the beginning, it may seem like a lot of work. So use your emotional guidance system. The Law of Harmony/Balance is the fourth, and is the result of the previous three. Nothing is ever static in the process of creation. Everything is moving and changing. As we see the contrast between what we do want, compared to what we don’t, the energies and vibrations change. Nothing is ever completely still, without movement toward one polarity or the other. As soon as we achieve what we want, we see something else that piques our curiosity--something to do, to experience, to learn about, to acquire, and off we go again, enjoying our incredible power to co-create with our thoughts, beliefs and expectations.

The system is set up to give us what we think about. So when you think about something, whether it is wanted or not, it does not remain just one little thought; that particular thought begins to “think,” then those thoughts bring associated thoughts, and so on. Pretty soon you have a real dynamic going on. We are using the power of the universe, so we better be consciously aware of what we are thinking and focusing on, or we will attract things we do not want. Look around at the world. Imagine that we were all taught these processes when we were children; imagine what the world would be like now, with everyone knowing how to attract what they want. here’s nothing better than cracking an egg into a hot skillet with the knowledge that, “Yes, this is a healthy egg.” Why? Because you know its source...your own backyard! Many people are concerned about the source of their food; and rightly so, with the current scare of salmonella enteritidis and its resulting large scale recall of shell eggs. From the family next door to Hollywood celebrities, the “backyard chicken fancier” is on the rise. This is exciting news in this modern pre-packaged culture, where most people haven’t even laid eyes on a living chicken. The chicken: a funny cackling flouncy bird that is so important to humans, they actually outnumber us on earth. Not that they themselves had anything to say or do about it; but rather by man’s doing, and his never ending appetite for them. Since the mid 1800’s, the industry and development of mass producing chickens for our consumption grew to incorporate science and technology. It’s the “science” part, with its hormones and antibiotics, not to mention the inhumane stress on the creatures, that concerns today’s health conscious consumer. Here in Northern Nevada, a serious group of Chicken advocates or “Chicken lovers,” is dedicated to educating and supporting those who want to raise their own little flock. They are the Northern Nevada Poultry Fanciers Association (NNPFA), founded in the spring of 2004 by Cliff and Kathy Lewis of Silver Springs. At that time, the country, or at least most of the southwestern United States, was trying to recover from the Exotic Newcastle disease, which caused entire poultry flocks to be destroyed; buildings burned to eradicate the highly contagious epidemic. It became very important to learn and share accurate information on how to raise healthy poultry, and how to implement safeguards to keep them healthy. The NNPFA, considered as Nevada’s chicken authorities, host Nevada’s largest Poultry show each fall and give poultry

Accredited by the American Poultry Association (APA) and the American Bantam Association (ABA), members of the club are great sources from which to purchase purebred chicks, show quality chicks, meat and eggs birds, fresh eggs and to get information and support. Raising your own chickens takes preplanning and work, but the benefits are worth it. Your efforts will reward you with wholesome and nutritious eggs and meat. Another benefit: poultry manure. It is the richest animal manure in N-P-K (NNitrogen, P-Phosphorous Acid, K-Potash). Chicken manure is considered “hot” and must be composted before adding it to the garden or it will burn your young plants. Looking for more benefits? Chickens will eat all the bugs in the yard, plus their cackling in alarm makes them great as watch dogs! Despite popular opinion, they’re pretty smart, with personalities to boot. In a happy safe environment, the chicken is a priceless and entertaining commodity. So, you want to start a flock…how and where do you start? Is that little yellow fluff ball you brought home for Easter just going to magically grow up and start pushing out eggs next week? Well, almost, but not without your dedication and commitment.

First, you need to check with your City’s zoning ordinances. In Reno, call 775-321-8309 and in Sparks call 775- 353-4067. Next, determine the space you can provide for their coop, the run and the freerange area for them to be able to root and scratch naturally. A general rule of thumb for having adequate space for standard breeds is 4 sq ft of indoor coop floor area per chicken, and 10 sq ft of yard space per chicken. Some people provide much less space per chicken and they do survive it, but it’s not the best living conditions for them. People
who allow chickens to roam/free range a larger yard or pasture or property on a regular basis can certainly get away with less enclosed yard space. Overcrowding chickens can raise their stress level, which can lead to health problems down the line. The best thing you can do for your chickens is to give them as much area as you can and ignore the minimums. 23
The security factor is extremely important, with fencing needed 5 to 6 feet tall to keep out crafty predators. Looking after your poultry’s welfare from chick, to pullet to laying hen also includes attention to their feed, of which there are organic varieties available. They’ll gobble up all sorts of table scraps from spaghetti to fish, bread, fruit and popcorn. Access to clean water, keeping them disease free and safe from harmful plants and pesticides, are also very important aspects of their care. Sunlight plays a huge part in egg production, shade for comfort, dirt for bathing and a cozy coop with clean nesting boxes finishes up with the basics. Once this becomes routine, you’ll be able to kick back and reap the harvest year after year. Nothing’s more relaxing than to sit and watch your flock in the yard with their gentle bustling about, beautiful colored feathers, and to hear their crazy cooing and cackling. It seems like Heaven on earth. Kids love chickens and your neighbors will too, unless you have an obnoxious rooster. Of course the best part is to know that you are feeding your family the highest quality eggs on the block. Raising your own chickens is definitely a fun-feathered adventure, with a healthy ending. PART II: DON’T BE A CANCER STATISTIC
Written By Mary Sutton, P.T., and CNC Today, one out of three Americans will get cancer, which is the 2nd leading cause of death in the US. You don’t have to be a statistic. Boost your immune system to help prevent illness and disease, including cancer. If you are already having health challenges, having a strong immune system will maximize your body’s healing potential. In Part I: Don’t Be a Cancer Statistic, the importance of how to detoxify/cleanse toxins from the body, and then how to rebuild with proper diet, nutrition and supplements were discussed. Detoxification and rebuilding are both crucial to health, healing at the cell level and in building a strong immune system. Reducing toxic exposure and stress reduction are also important to assure a strong immune system for vibrant health. REDUCE YOUR TOXIC EXPOSURE: A recent report by the Columbia University School of Public Health estimated that 95 percent of cancers are caused by diet and environmental toxicity. Studies show that there are over 287 chemicals present in a newborns’ blood with 180 of these known to cause cancer! Here are some startling statistics: • There are over 80,000 chemicals produced in North America • There are over 3,000 chemicals added to our food supply. • There are over 10,000 chemical solvents, emulsifiers and preservative used in food processing. • There are over 1,000 new chemicals introduced each year. Chemicals are toxic, foreign invaders to the body; they activate the immune system. The more toxins we put into the body, the harder the immune system must
work. An overworked immune system eventually becomes ineffective in fighting disease and cancer. Eliminating the number of toxins that we ingest, breathe in, put on our skin or come in contact with will take stress off of the immune system. Here are some steps that can be taken to decrease your exposure to toxins. • Water: Install water filters, both for drinking and bathing. Our water is polluted with agricultural, factory and automobile pollution chemicals, prescription and over-the counter drugs, heavy metals and human waste. All these make their way into our lakes, rivers and ground water, only to be pumped back out of the ground and be treated with more chemicals (chlorine) to purify it for safe drinking water. According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, “Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93 percent higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.” When you take a shower, you breathe in chlorine fumes and absorb it through your skin. • Personal Care Products: Buy products made from natural ingredients, herbs and essential oils that are preservative free: Most toothpaste, deodorants, cosmetics, soap and shampoos, feminine hygiene products and hair dyes are filled with hundreds of chemical toxins and will increase your risk of cancer. Check out the ingredients of your toothpaste. You may be starting your day with a hefty dose of chemicals that go directly into your bloodstream. • Reduce Exposure to Electromagnetic Frequencies: EMFs create changes in the body on a cellular level and can cause tumors, cancer and memory problems. Use cell phone protectors & dirty electricity blockers in your home. • Food: Eat organic whenever possible including all meats and dairy. Avoid processed foods genetically modified and irradiated foods. In other words, buy healthy whole foods and prepare meals at home as much as possible. • Eliminate non-stick cookware: They emit toxins from the synthetic lining and usually have aluminum as their base, which will help your Alzheimer’s

along. Use stainless steel. • Reduce/eliminate use of Microwave Ovens: Microwaves cause molecular & chemical changes in the food which is detrimental to your health. It also destroys food nutrients. • Packaging: Carcinogenic, toxic substances are transferred from plastic, aluminum foil, aluminum cans, and Styrofoam into our food and body. Choose glass bottles, paper bags, cardboard containers and canned goods with protective enamel linings. • Purchase environmental friendly cleaning products: Go green to get clean! Just breathing in those toxic fumes is detrimental to your health! REDUCE EMOTIONAL & PHYSICAL STRESS: “The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.” The saying “Stress Kills” is true; it sets in motion your “fight or flight response,” to prepare the body for action. Unfortunately, many of us are continually in this stress response mode, which eventually can have a devastating effect on your physical health. Research has now shown, beyond any reasonable doubt, that human emotions have a direct influence on the way our cells function in our body and on our DNA! Emotions can affect your health in a positive or in a destructive way, depending on the emotion; they can cause physical imbalance and make you sick or they can make you well! The energy associated with the emotion of anger will have a very different affect on your physical body compared to the emotion of joy or gratitude. Here are a few suggestions for reducing stress and improving physical and emotional well-being: • So-Sound Therapy: Relaxing and healing both physically and emotionally! Lie on a So-Sound table and experience a musical massage that not only feels great, but breaks the stress cycle and changes brainwaves to a meditative state and begins to balance cell energies. Certain musical tones have been proven to repair May 2011

A gentle hands-on therapy that is meditative and relaxing. • Quantum Indigo Biofeedback: Reduces stress and re-trains the body energetically while you relax on a sound table. Balances erratic body frequencies, which occurs with emotional stress, illness, injury and can help boost the immune system. Maximizes your healing potential and promotes health and well-being. • Massage Therapy: Relaxing and both emotionally and physically healing. Try an oncology or lymphatic masApril 2011
sage; which reduces anxiety, improves energy stimulates the lymphatic system, improves metabolism, promotes the removal of bodily toxins and waste, and encourages a healthy immune system. • Exercise: Exercise not only improves your physical health in many ways but also helps to reduce mental tension and stress. Exercise, even just walking, also improves lymph flow which will boost your immune system. • Yoga: Heals and balances on all levels, physically, mentally and spiritually. • Meditation/Prayer: Quiets the mind, relaxes and reduces stress. he water from green young coconuts is almost identical to human blood plasma (which makes up about 55 percent of our blood). It is mineral rich, is one of the highest natural electrolyte sources, and has a low calorie content. It is quickly becoming the trendy new sports drink. This is well reasoned. The high magnesium content helps prevent muscle cramping, and its light refreshing flavor is wonderfully cooling in the summer heat. Of course, the best source of coconut water comes straight out of the young coconut. Coconut water is naturally filtered through the palm tree for more than nine months and is sealed sterile inside the shell, a perfectly contained wonder drink, in and of itself. The more the coconut water is processed, and given additional ingredients, the more questionable the benefit. Here we examine a couple of pre-packaged coconut water beverages and compare their quality.
Vitacoco Pure Coconut Water Ingredients: Coconut Water, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C)
Pros: No added sugar, only two ingredients, Ascorbic Acid is not an especially dangerous preservative in and of itself. Cons: Most of the disadvantages of this product can be attributed to the packaging itself. While Tetra Paks are praised for the their ability to increase the shelf life of packaged foods, and are supposedly BPA-free, we are starting to see pitfalls in TetraPak’s “green” exterior. For starters, only 18 percent of the world population, and 20 percent of the US has access to recycling facilities that process Tetra paks; which means that the rest of them wind up in landfills--they certainly do in the state of NV. Secondly, even though Tetra Paks are touted as being BPA free, there is evidence that suggests there are still health risks from this type of packaging. Tetra Paks are made primarily of aluminum and low-density polyethylene (aka petroleum plastic). Neither material is green, as they need to be highly processed and extracted through drilling and mining. A 2008 German study found that Tetra Paks had the same dramatic estrogenic activity leaching into liquids, as attributed to plastic bottles, presumably from the plastic lining that coats the inside of the Pak. The manufacturers of Tetra Pak only disclose that it “primarily” uses low density polyethylene plastics; the exact cause of the leached estrogenic hormones is unknown. However, in the German study, the Tetra Paks tested were not only found to leach estrogen, but one of the Tetra Paks leached it in amounts HIGHER than nearly all the other plastics. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
“Coconut Water”
Zico Coconut Water: Ingredients: 100 percent natural coconut water from concentrate, natural flavors
Pros: It’s “natural”? And it probably won’t spoil if you don’t open it for the next 20 years. Cons: “Concentrate” equals higher sugar content. “Natural flavors” is a vague ingredient, one that does not reveal its true source. Always suspect vague ingredients. Oh yeah, and it’s in a Tetra Pak.
Taste Nirvana’s real coconut water with pulp: Ingredients: Natural coconut water
Pros: Only one ingredient, in its original state. No preservatives and is packaged in glass, a substantially safer, easy-to-recycle form of packaging. Cons: It still goes through processing in order to be packaged, meaning that it probably requires more fossil fuels to create the total product than shipping a whole coconut. It has been pasteurized, so it probably does not have as much life force as a raw green coconut either. That being said, it is probably the best choice compared to the other two drinks. Most young coconuts are opened with a machete. If you are scared to keep or use one at home, you can purchase already opened young coconuts at Whole Foods. Whoever invents an easy to operate, young-coconut opener is going to be a “gagillionaire,” mark my words. HB References: 1. Safron, Jeremy. The Fasting Handbook, Dining from an Empty Bowl. The “Morning After Pill” and “Abortion Pill”: The Difference. Submitted By Planned Parenthood Mar Monte
T
Some may experience side effects such as nausea, breast tenderness or headaches. If there are any side effects, they usually last about a day. The timing of a woman’s period can be off, either early or late, after taking emergency contraception. Emergency contraception neither impacts a woman’s ability to get pregnant in the future nor does it terminate a pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, emergency contraception is too late. The abortion pill refers to medication abortion, which can end a pregnancy up to nine weeks after the first period is missed. It’s not just a pill. Medication abortion involves a patient/provider discussion about options and medical history, a medical exam and usually a test, including an ultra sound and two pills. The first pill stops progesterone and breaks down the uterine lining; the second pill causes the uterus to empty. A medication abortion is like a miscarriage, so cramps and bleeding are common. Other effects may be dizziness, nausea or vomiting, mild fever or chills. A follow-up visit is required to assure the procedure is completed. HB
he morning after pill and the abortion pill are often confused; neither title provides accurate information, which compounds the confusion. The morning after pill misnomer comes from the fact it is effective for up to five days after unprotected intercourse. So really, we could call it “the morning after, and the morning after that and the morning...” pill. You can see how that would be ridiculous. It is an emergency contraception. Emergency Contraception (EC) safely and effectively prevents pregnancy if taken no more than 120 hours after unprotected intercourse; it’s more effective the earlier it is used. EC is to birth control that orange juice concentrate is to orange juice--it’s a mega dose. It works the same way-it prevents the egg from being released or fertilized. Most References: women, even those who typically don’t use oral contracep1. www.not-2-late.org tives, can use EC for pregnancy prevention. Uses for Emergency contraception include: • When no birth control method was used • The condom broke • If you missed two or more pills in a cycle, started the cycle late or missed your birth control shot • If the diaphragm slipped • If you were forced to have sex

Therapeutic Massage:
A Powerful Ally for Stress Relief and Stress Management
T
here’s no denying the power of bodywork. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it--pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic--or the reasons we seek it out--a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management--massage therapy can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.
stimulating lactation post-birth and bringing people closer to each other. Further studies show that oxytocin’s relevance to our lives extends beyond bonding and birth. When this hormone is flowing freely, it puts us in a peaceful, happy state of mind; it helps us feel emotionally connected.
Wellness and body care have a long tradition throughout human history. In ancient Greece and Rome, purification rituals and massage were an integral part of life. Seeking balance of mind, body and spirit was a high priority in their teachings. The famous Latin saying mens sana in corpore sano, which means “a healthy mind in a healthy body,” is as true today as it was back in the day of our ancestors.
Experts estimate that upwards of ninety percent of disease is stress related; and perhaps nothing ages us faster, internally and externally, than high stress. While eliminating anxiety and pressure altogether in this fast-paced world may be optimistic, massage can, without a doubt, help manage stress. This translates into:
As humans, we’re hardwired to seek out and enjoy physical touch. Touch, when administered in a safe, caring and loving way, causes our brains to release a calm-inducing hormone/neurotransmitter called oxytocin, also known as the “cuddle” hormone. Discussion about oxytocin initially focused on its roles in controlling contractions during childbirth,

elieve it or not, that tiny little one-ounce shot of wheatgrass juice contains a powerhouse of vitality increasing elements including enzymes, water, oxygen, protein, phyto-chemicals, chlorophyll, carotenoids, fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins and trace minerals. You drink one shot and KAMBOOM…it’s like a “chlorophyl’ed” punch to the face! A host of life enhancing nutrients jump starts your system. Many who’ve sampled a shot can attest to the instant jolt of energy they experience. Wheatgrass and its cousin, Barely Grass, are now popular mainstays as juices and powders throughout many health food stores and juice bars. This Superfood, with its myriad of easily assimilated life enhancing properties, could quite possibly be considered a dietary essential. All of the amino acids and basic proteins are contained within wheatgrass. Through the juicing process, the grass is broken down, making it easier to digest and raising enzyme activity. Wheatgrass juice has high alpha and beta carotene contents, precursors of vitamin A, which have significant immune enhancing properties, including the promotion of T-cells. High levels of anti-oxidants, such as these carotenoids, are associated with a reduced

capable of permeating both the fat and aqueous cell membranes in order to fully protect the cell from the damaging effects of oxidation. In the words of Shibamoto, “2”-0-GIV is more potent than vitamins E and C, but when taken with them, the effects are profound.” Barley and wheatgrass juices contain all three nutrients in good quantity. Some other healthful benefits of wheatgrass juice include its ability to purify and rebuild the blood, increasing hemoglobin production. It purges the liver, cleanses the colon, and heals the intestinal walls. It chelates heavy metals out of our cells, detoxifies cellular fluid, has anti-inflammatory actions, and speeds the healing of wounds. The high chlorophyll content has even been shown to provide some protection from low-level radiation from computers, televisions, microwaves, and hospital equipment such as X-rays. Experiments on guinea pigs in the 1950’s demonstrated that radiation-poisoned guinea pigs recovered when chlorophyll rich vegetables were added to their diet. Juicing wheatgrass at home can become an easy and beneficial daily routine to incorporate. After the initial expense of the juicer, (electric models are typically $300 to $500. Manual juicers are around $100) the expense to maintain a regular wheatgrass juice habit is minimal. Wheat and Barley berries are extremely cost effective when purchased in bulk, apart from that you’ll need some shallow trays for planting and some potting soil. After soaking and sprouting for a few days in a glass jar, the berries can be laid onto a small pallet of potting soil, and watered daily until grass is about 6 inches high. Then you can cut and juice your own grass daily. Start another jar of sprouts every week or so, and keep a couple pallets going in rotation, in order to maintain a steady supply of grass. It is recommended that most people start out with no more than two ounces a day, and then gradually increase the amount on a weekly basis, if desired. If you do not particularly care for the taste of the grass by itself, you may add celery, leafy greens such as spinach and kale, or other sprouts, such as sunflowers or pea shoots. It’s best to keep only green veggies in the mix. For maximum benefit, take the juice on an empty stomach and wait at least thirty minutes before eating any other foods. Some nausea may occur as part of the detox process, in May 2011
most cases, diluting the juice with water or other vegetable juices, or decreasing the amount will ease this. An alternative to fresh juice is powered forms of wheat and barley grass. There are many excellent supplements that process the grasses in such a way as to protect as much of the structural integrity of this superfood as possible. This powder may be taken in water, or added to juices and smoothies. As always these recommendations are not a substitution for competent care from a health professional. Please address any serious health concerns to a certified caregiver that you trust. The next time you enjoy a shot of wheat grass juice, toast to your health, this is one shot you won’t live to regret the next day. HB References: 1.) Meyerowitz, Steve. Stand Up Paddling Written By Mike Tessier

tand Up Paddling is new to some, but it’s actually an ancient way of travel. Centuries ago, native Hawaiians, Indians and Europeans used this form of paddling to cross various types of water ways. The boards were carved out of wood, weighing in at about 80 pounds. Some findings show that Native Americans built boards out of Tully weeds that were tied to each other, to form a stand up paddle board/ boat. They used a long pole, with a blade at the end, as their paddle. Five years ago, this ancient way of travel became a sport! It was first introduced to the modern day crowd in Waikiki, by the Waikiki boys. These five young friends had a surf business, taking photos of people learning how to surf. They decided they needed a way to take more photos of their clients while standing on their surf boards. So, they started making longer paddles by taping broom sticks to their outrigger paddles; and they also built large wide custom boards to accommodate their needs. Since then, the sport started growing at warp speed. For those who are new to this fun, easy-todo sport, it should be known that anyone can do it. For instance, Jaden Tessier, who has a congenital heart defect (he only lives off of one ventricle, instead of the two) is able to use a Stand Up Paddleboard. He is not able to do what most other active kids can do, such as football, baseball, basketball, etc., but he is able to paddle and get a great cardio workout, while still enjoying the outdoors; which he really loves to do!

amily dynamics never change. For instance, when I was a senior in high school and my baby sister Jessie was in kindergarten, I was better at reading and math than she was--or at least that’s the way I remember it. Reports from some of our siblings conflict. Now she’s in her early forties, and I’m in my fi-cough-ies, I naturally expect that I’m a better gardener. So when she put in a garden at her new home in Sidney, Montana, I predicted crop failure. I had two things going for me in the world of competitive gardening. First, twelve years more experience. Second, and I was counting on this, Sidney is only about a hundred miles from the Canadian border. Gardening maps put Sidney in zone three, where I always thought only reindeer moss and the hardiest of willows grew. My Winnemucca garden is in zone six, which all the experts agree is gardening nirvana. Imagine my surprise when Jessie started complaining of tomato-canning burnout last August, while I was still waiting for enough tomatoes to build a decent salad. Then I started investigating. Turns out that those colorful zone maps only measure one thing--the coldest temperature an area is likely to receive. It’s useful information if you’re trying to decide whether a tree or perennial is will winter-kill in your area. But most vegetables don’t go in the garden until at least May. Even in Sidney, the forty below temperatures are a painful but receding memory. That’s when other climate factors come in to play. Factors like the number of frost-free days. In Sidney, they have 111 of them, on average. Here in Winnemucca, we get from 85 to 110 days between the last frost of spring and the first of fall. Our altitude encourages late spring frosts. It also encourages cool nights and hot days, temperature extremes that many vegetables don’t appreciate. On the plus side, I’ve found that some cool-season crops, like lettuces, peas and fava beans, tolerate our heat better than I expected, probably because they get to cool off during the night. Unfortunately, those crops don’t carry the bragging rights of tomatoes and melons. My sister’s zone three garden has a couple other unexMay 2011
pected pluses. Around the summer solstice, Jessie gets a few minutes shy of an hour more daylight every day than I do. The difference in day length is less marked earlier or later in the season, but still, that’s a lot of extra photosynthesis. Sidney is west of the Missouri River, which means gardeners should expect drought. But Jessie gets a whopping 14.2 inches of precipitation to Winnemucca’s 8.4 inches. In keeping with the “it’s not how much, but when” theme, Sidney a good share of its moisture in June and July, when the only natural precipitation my garden usually sees is the sweat that drips off my brow. More precipitation usually means better soil, because salt and alkalinity wash out, and comparatively luxuriant vegetation means more naturally-occurring organic matter in the soil. Fortunately, we can compensate for some of these conditions. We can irrigate and add organic material. We can’t do much about that extra summer daylight (I’ll spot you that one, Jessie), but we can offer shade in the extreme heat and frost protection in the early spring and later fall. There are a variety of hoop houses, floating row covers and greenhouses for frost protection, although they come at some expense. There are also options for individual plants. Wax paper hot caps are inexpensive, although they won’t protect against a hard freeze. The French use elegant cloches, often made of glass. This year I plan to try the proverbial wall-o-water, a ring of connected plastic tubes that you fill with water. These tubes surround your tomato; the water absorbs heat during the day and releases it during the night. So watch out this year, Jessie! Me and my wall-o-waters are going to kick your little tomato-canning tootie! ASTROLOGYHEALTH
ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK
vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis
Horoscope for Health | May - 2011
M
ay. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, May is the season of Beltane, also known as Midspring holiday. The theme is love and abundance, explored consciously as part of our relationship to the planet. No matter how weird things may get on Earth, we are still in a relationship to the planet, and Beltane is the time to take that in a positive and creative direction. The timing is when the Sun reaches the midpoint of Taurus, usually on May 5. It’s a tipping point in the year, a moment of concentrated energy to set intentions and manifest what you want for the coming seasons and through the inevitable winter. This year, we have the Taurus New Moon two days ahead of Beltane, so if I were the astrologer to the High Priestess, I would be suggesting Beltane celebrations begin the evening of May 2 and continue through the week. Some traditions take the whole month, and the festival is known as The May. There is a lot of fire in the Beltane chart--the Sun is in Taurus and many other planets are in Aries. Aries (March 20-April 19) You may still be feeling hesitant from the recent retrograde of Mercury in your sign, but the winds of fortune are strong against your back. You can afford to act on your confidence, as long as you’re proceeding with sincerity. You have so much drive and passion those are the last things you need to concern yourself with. The idea is to make sure you’re pursuing your heart’s desire. The time has arrived to be absolutely real--no faking, no delaying your true priorities, only moving from an authentic space. You may be thinking, “how do I know what I really want?” I would say: you do know. If you set aside all your excuses, all your rationalizations, and you don’t let your mother make your decisions for you (overtly, or covertly), you will be on solid ground with yourself. Taurus (April 19-May 20) Many factors seem to be influencing you--if only you knew what they were. But what if you knew? What if you could see through all your doubts and seeming confusion? Stop and listen to yourself. If your inner monologue has been louder than usual, listen to what that voice is saying. Literally, what do the words mean, and what do the images you’re seeing show you? It may seem overly simple, but “knowing thyself” actually does involve witnessing the contents of your awareness. The key is slowing down long enough to size up what is helpful, what is destructive, and giving yourself a moment to make a choice what to respond to. By choice, I mean a mentally oriented decision rather than being pushed or pulled by your emotions. Gemini (May 20-June 21) You go through phases of searching for your own identity among the people around you; and after what you’ve been through the past month, I am guessing you’ve figured out that it doesn’t quite work. Besides which, it’s likely that the people you care about are looking to you for some idea of how to maintain their stability in our uncertain times. You Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
actually have a better sense about yourself than most of them have about themselves. How could this be? You’re more accustomed than others to dealing with the many possibilities of who you are. You know that a human mind is complex, and you embrace that complexity. You also know that there are no guaranteed outcomes, and your comfort level with uncertainty feeds your self-awareness. Cancer (June 21-July 22) This continues to be a vital time for emphasizing your professional goals. By goals I mean what you discover at the intersection of “I am” and “I do.” You can add to that “I want.” It takes a few different factors to make a goal worth pursuing: a sense of identifying with the goal; a love of the activity; and the desire to make it happen, or to invest yourself. Most folks run into problems because what they think of as their goals don’t meet any of the criteria here; it’s possible to fudge and make excuses, but they don’t actually get the job done. Even meeting one would be helpful, though with the planets being what they are, I suggest you go for total authenticity. As you’ve figured out, a learning curve is involved, and this is a very good sign. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) What is possible? Ask yourself that question, and listen to your answer. That will reveal your state of mind. If you want to know who can support you in your goals, ask them what they think is possible and, rather than trying to convince them of anything, listen to what they say. Some people live for yes, and some live for no. Some live for maybe, and others for maybe not. It’s true that if you study the pages of The New York Times or watch CNN for an hour, you may not feel like you have any reasons for optimism. Despite the prevailing doom and gloom of our era, we’re in a moment of rich potential. Part of what is feeding that potential is the chaos. True enough, it takes a special kind of person to see the possibilities when many merely see loss and devastation. Just keep your faith that a new world will arise from what is left 36

of the old one--and part of how that will happen is the vision that you’re offering.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) You may need to toss all your ideas of safety or sanity, but what do you do with all of the stress? If it’s coming out of your psyche in ways that are painful or disruptive and offer you nothing in return, I suggest you make some decisions about how you direct your energy. It may be time for a change, and by that I mean a significant change. One thing your chart is saying is that the past is not what it used to be, and it barely exists at all. What exists for sure is the way you can direct yourself into the future, and this looks like one crucial goal that you may be resisting. Any idea what that might be? Is there something you dearly want to achieve, but you’re having a little denial attack about? Focus on that goal and you’ll likely feel a heck of a lot safer on the planet.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) What is an asset and what is a liability? This is the main question you have to ask yourself. I can give you a clue that you’ve probably mixed up a few of these--certain things you thought were helpful are not so helpful and other things you thought were harmful are turning out to be pretty good assets. This is not so much a matter of perception as it is about correcting misperception. Yet there’s also another little issue, which is that most of the time we actually don’t evaluate our lives on the basis of what helps and what hurts. When we apply that question consciously, real information is forthcoming. The deeper question would then be, why are so many people attached to what hurts them, and how are you doing letting go of those things?
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Stay grounded, whatever that means to you. That mind of yours has a lot of activity and adventure running around in it--a bit much to leave you with a feeling of settling into any consistent ideas. In fact the nice thing about your ideas is that they are pushing you out of your comfort zone. Your grounding can come from tuning into a commitment that is truly meaningful to you, and orienting on that. It’s an idea that feels like home, or feels like a solid and meaningful place to gather your emotions. It could be a person, or a relationship. It could be your physical space, or your desire to create a solid home for yourself. Remember that this would best be a container for your abundant energy, rather than a place to barricade external influences away from you.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) No matter how much energy is coming toward you, flexibility is the key to keeping your balance. It’s true that you’re under a lot of pressure--more than you thought you could handle. But it’s not merely pressure; you’re being offered energy, opportunity, love and friendship. You’ve got an opportunity to participate in the world like you’ve hardly ever had before. The thing about participation is that it tends to draw in your full involvement. While many would think they are “giving up their life,” I would say that the one sure way to have a life is to be involved. Here, we come back to the question of balance, which for you means flexibility. Having options is a prelude to making choices. And one decision leads to the next.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) This is an excellent time to get your financial life in order, and by in order, I mean beginning with a clear concept of the abundance and prosperity that you want. In case you haven’t figured it out, it’s a lot easier to create wealth when you’re not busy talking it down. Having enough is entirely unrelated to greed. Enjoying a glass of wine does not make someone an alcoholic. Be clear with yourself about your ideas here. Recognize when a prejudice is entering the picture, such as the notion that money corrupts someone. The only thing that can corrupt anyone is their own values, so if you proceed from understanding what is important to you and appreciating why that is so, you will have a guiding principle that will be truly useful as you realize just how resourceful you are. HB
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Rest is important, but there are activities more restful than sleep. That’s a good thing, because your life has nothing if not activity at the moment. Notice that some things you do nourish you and some deplete you. Have you started to see a pattern, which is which? If you were to apply one criterion to evaluating everything in your life, this is the one. But let’s define “nourish.” I would include things that expand your capacity for achievement; desires that stoke your ambition to do good work; experiences that challenge your idea of who you are; activities that fill up your time in a productive way, and nudge out the things you don’t like to do, or that don’t serve you. What nourishes you may make you a bit uncomfortable--but only a little, and only at first.
THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) The theme of this phase of your life is stretching your creative capacity. I think that to some extent, everyone wants to be creative, but you may be experiencing this as a kind of extreme restlessness that you cannot quite ground. A little focus will go a long way. Don’t worry about meeting your “full potential.” Rather, if you have to take out the trash, do it in an interesting way. If you have any kind of assignment at all, figure out a way to take pleasure in the work and do it as artfully as you can. Meantime, pay attention to the ideas that are percolating out of you, and when you feel a juicy one, explore and experiment with it. Take a chance. Allow yourself the space to do something unusual, and keep going till it takes on a life of its own. May 2011

or me, spring is very busy. The weather is warming up and that means CA STAR testing at school, sports, going out with friends, homework, etc. Keeping good grades, doing a sport and also finding time to hang out with my friends can be very hard. Just keeping good grades can be difficult alone, so how do I do all of this? Well, I try to find balance. I take my time to finish my homework, which means studying hard for tests; and always doing my best. School and good grades might not mean as much now, but it will when you want to get a good job. When it comes to hanging out with my friends, there are always the weekends; and sometimes, homework and other things can be more important. I need to make sure I am making the right choice. I also need family time, so taking a little time out of my busy schedule to hang out with my mom and siblings is always good! I also need some “me” time, which includes the things that I like to do like watching a nice movie or having a spa night by myself. Now, I have soccer, which really cuts into my time, so I try to get all my homework done in school, which helps a lot. CA STAR testing (at school) only adds more stress to my schedule! But with studying in school, and taking even twenty minutes to look over some stuff each night, you can do well with testing. All in all, I do it, and in the end everything is ok. I hope my advice helps you if your schedule is as busy as mine! HB Here is a healthy and quick snack to stay energized: Berry Delight Smoothie
Ingredients: 1 cup of blackberries 1/2 cup of blueberries 1/2 cup of yogurt (low-fat or non-fat) 1/2 to 1 cup of crushed ice (depending upon how thick you want your smoothie) 2 teaspoons of honey Nothing hits the spot like a yummy smoothie to start off your day! Have a great month on May!
Kayaking through Siberia, Part 5 I have never owned a cell phone and am a novice about its use. Vladimir gave me one of his, with a reach of a thousand kilometers, saying that he would check on me periodically and that I could reach him with any concern. This arrangement later proved to be very useful. Well, the time had come now to depart. Well wishes, handshakes, hugs, hand waiving and off I went into this big river. A swift current, and favorable winds, carried me away quickly. Soon there was just the river and I. Krasnoyarsk is an industrial center, and a lot of its shipping activities take place on the Yenisey River. For some time, I passed shipyards, anchored barges and all sorts of loading facilities. Within the hour, I entered what I had come here to experience, the great Siberian forest known as the taiga. Besides patches of snow on top of distant mountains, there was nothing to relate to my concern that I had come here too early in the season. It was partly sunny and warm. Trees had turned green. The going was good. Then, something happened that dampened my high spirits. I kept my new digital camera in a pocket of my rain jacket. In the process of taking it off, the camera plunged into the water. Gone were all the pictures I had thus far taken. Fortunately, I still had my old 35mm camera. It too, though, would shortly become a casualty. There was considerable boat traffic on the river, regulated by a string of buoys in bright colors. I entertained myself by waving and watching the response. There was always an echo. Larger vessels would even blow their horns. Tugboats would pull mostly barges, loaded to the brim with timber as they slowly “steamed” against the current. hat does every child or teen want? It’s not a gold star, IPod or even a car; although many of them would have you believing that was true. Children today are smarter and faster than we were as kids. Deep down they know the truth, with greatness comes the certainty and passion to achieve success in life. Children and teens want to be great. They want to know they are great, and to experience their own unique greatness. This is vital in order to raise a champion for life. Parents play the most influential role in acting as a catalyst for their children to realize and experience their greatness. Many families have utilized this strategy successfully; it’s called the Greatness Expander. Clearly put, it is simply your ability to expand the greatness that already exists within your child or teen. A dear friend of mind, Dr. Bernie Sigiel M.D, shared with me in an interview that he was the “ugly duckling” in his family. Blessed as he was to be raised by his grandmother, he once asked her, “Grandma, am I an ugly duckling?” Grandma’s brilliant response was, “Look into my eyes and see how beautiful you are.” In that moment, Bernie’s life was changed. The beauty within Bernie came out. Today he is one of the most sought after speakers, authors and successful oncologists. How kids feel about themselves means everything. Kids’ beliefs about themselves dictate their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. In his book, The Biology of Belief, Dr. Bruce Lipton PhD stated that “our emotions alter out body chemistry and communicate with our genes epigenetic.” In layman’s terms, it means our beliefs and emotions influence every aspect of our lives. If you really want to influence your child to become a champion, look into their eyes, the answer is there. Always! Recently a client submitted a question on our website that was very interesting. They asked, “How do you help kids realize they’re great, I tell my kids all the time that their great and I don’t think they see it.” You can tell your kids May 2011
The Greatness Expander Raising Champions Focus on these key questions and watch For Life! the champion within your child come a thousand times they’re great, to take out the trash and do their homework and they won’t hear a thing. But, “If you look at your child long enough like they are the greatest person you’ve ever met, they will become just that.” Parents must shift the self image to see the greatness within their child. Some kids are more challenging than others. With those kids, all a parent needs to do is to tell them the truth, “I will continue to believe how great you are until you believe. I love you too much to argue about how great you are.” At some point your power to influence will override a child’s negative image or doubt about themselves. The champion will come out. A parent’s certainty and passion about their own child become their certainty and passion about themselves. In every child is a champion waiting to unleash itself. Your role is to expand your child’s greatness each time the opportunity exists. That is expanding their greatness. This creates a solid foundation that everything in life stems from. Challenges become opportunities; tough times cause kids to unleash passion, not doubt. Kids who realize their greatness are more passionate than those who do not. Passion can and will pull your kids through anything in life. Now I ask you, what is really possible for your child, now, and in the future?

out: • What are the greatest qualities about your child? • Identify & Express simple tangible things your child does that are great. • Talk about them to others in public. • Ask them questions. “Do you know what I adore most about you?” “Do you know what makes you an amazing young man or woman?” Remember, when you tell your child something it means one thing, when they say it, it means everything. Ultimately, to raise a champion for life, parents have got to get out of their child’s way. When you really believe in your child you won’t stand in-between them and the world, hovering, protecting and correcting; you stand side by side with them until your child realizes how great they are. Be certain. Express your passion and watch your child become a champion for life. HB For more info and a free EBook, Videos and Article downloads visit online at www.EveryChildHealthy.com . Improve Brain Function with Therapeutic Massage Written By Victoria Linn LMT. NVMT #1002

assage therapy promotes healthy brain function through the applied pressure to the muscles, which stimulate receptors in different areas of the brain. This is accomplished by the production of intracellular messengers (proteins such as neurotransmitters). These messengers are key to a healthy brain and are primarily useful through three main systems of the body. These are the endocrine, nervous and immune systems. Each of these systems has a tremendous impact on brain activity as well as each other. They form a network of communication that allows the brain to receive the intracellular messengers during a massage session. If one of these systems becomes compromised, it can cause problems with the other two systems, thereby decreasing brain activity. The healthier the brain, the better results from the massage and other alternative healing modalities, such as aromatherapy. It becomes a symbiotic relationship between the body and the brain; much like strengthening and stretching a muscle through exercise, yoga, walking, etc. Everything we do, or neglect to do, affects our brains. Everything we “perceive” has to do with brain function. A decrease in brain activity affects the body’s ability to function normally. How healthy is your brain? Can you remember easily, such as why you walked into a particular room? Count backwards in increments of seven? Do you read, learn easily or play games that stimulate your thought processes? What we focus on either sends positive or negative reaction to the brain. If you are constantly watching or listening to the news, watching violence on TV or playing violent video games, you are sending negative responses to the brain, causing harm to the receptors and diminishing brain function.

There are some instances, however, where you won’t want the brain to receive more stimulation. For example, stroke victims wouldn’t want it because it’s too much stimulation to injured neurons. Therefore, if you have any illnesses or injuries, it is always best to consult with your doctor first and be sure to keep your massage therapist informed of any medical issues.

The brain uses 20 percent of the body’s glucose levels. To keep up the glucose levels, it is important to eat something within an hour or two before getting a massage, for maximum results. The amount of pressure of the massage does not affect the body’s ability to send intracellular messengers to the brain, so you can reap the rewards of stimulating your brain’s activity whether you’re getting a light relaxing massage or a deeper, therapeutic one.

Avoidingthe Psychopath
Y
Written by Andy Drymalski, Ed.D.
ou live in the age of the psychopath. In this age, the values of love, honesty, commitment and integrity are increasingly rare. More and more, individuals are treated like the interchangeable or easily replaced parts of a machine. This is true not just in the areas of business and government, but in personal relationships as well. If you look around, you will see that the values of power and self-gratification are ascending in our society. In their wake, emotionally injured people are left to carry on as best they can. If you are going to protect yourself from the onslaught of these psychopathic forces, there are some important things you need to know.
“How can someone do that?!” “Has he no conscience?” “He acts as if he did nothing wrong, and as if I’m crazy for being upset. Am I crazy?” No, you are not crazy, although the psychopath would like you to believe that you are.
It is not unusual to feel confused when trying to make sense of the psychopath. This is because their approach to life is so much different from your own. You have a conscience. You accept limits and believe that some things are right and others are just plain wrong. You have compassion and a feeling response for the plight of others. Put simply, you have a more developed heart. But Unlike nature’s predators, such as a the psychopath does not have these crocodile or a rattle snake, psychoattributes. But human predators Perhaps you belong to the “blank slate club.” This describes are different. Though we all share the basic appearance of people who believe that we are all born pretty much the our species, our orientation to life and other people may be same, and that we are molded into our adult personality as different as that between a dove and a rattle snake. solely through parenting, schooling and other life experiences. Since our parents have the most influence upon You probably tend to assume that other people are like us as infants and children, they are often given the lion’s yourself. “We’re all human, aren’t we?” Yet, individual hushare of blame for the way we turn out. hurtful home environments. Likewise, children raised in the same family can develop widely different moral attitudes. Having sympathy for the psychopath, based on the belief that if it wasn’t for his rough childhood he would be just like you, is to make an assumption that may not be helpful to him or you. In fact, he may be far more at ease with his lifestyle than you realize, and may have no interest whatsoever in any attempts at healing.
the best ways to protect yourself from the psychopath is to know and wrestle with your own psychopathic tendencies. Your selfishness, dishonesties, excuses, and manipulations may not reach the magnitude of the psychopath, but they are cut from the same basic fabric. The more aware you are of your own capacity for evil, the more discerning you will be of its presence in your outer life, and the better able to confront it with conviction.
It is important to understand that the psychopath does not think or feel like you. To illustrate, imagine two children who have just been scolded for taking money from their mothers’ purses. The child with a feeling connection to his mother will feel guilty and sad. By his dishonesty he has placed a wedge in their relationship. He has injured the bond of trust and affection between them. He doesn’t like this feeling and so chooses to never steal from her again. The other child, however, does not have this feeling bond with his mother. He is more concerned with what he was going to buy with the stolen money. Although he may proclaim his sorrow and beg forgiveness with the best of them, his real thoughts are: “Next time I will have to be more careful so I don’t get caught. Perhaps I should try stealing from father instead.” For this child, the very valuable feelings of guilt and remorse are absent. No conscience is engaged. With the psychopath, relationships are a means to an end, and people are objects to be manipulated. He is a master pretender who recognizes no higher authority than his current desire. He is concerned with morals only to the extent that following such principles will help him get what he wants.
Of all the things you can do to protect yourself from the psychopath, probably the greatest is learning to listen to your instincts. Many people who have had run-ins with the psychopath report having experienced “red flags” and intuitive warnings that they ignored, to their later regret. Listen to your instincts regarding situations and people. Your animal nature has been dealing with predators much longer than your conscious mind. Learn to understand its language and to heed its warnings. HB References: 1. Chitwood, Terry, EdD. Death: The Beginning of Life. Polestar Publications: Sioux Falls, SD. 1988. 2. Peck, M. There are several attitudes that may make you more susceptible to the games of the psychopath. For example, if you have a hard time accepting that such people really exist, you will have a hard time recognizing them when they enter your life. If you think that they are just misunderstood, deserve yet another chance, or merely need more love, you are playing right into their hand. If you are naïve about human nature, or believe that because you are a nice person you will be magically protected from their influence, you also place yourself at heightened risk. It is important to realize that evil is opportunistic and does not discriminate. It is an equal opportunity employer, and an equal opportunity destroyer.
PSYCHOTHERAPY To Help You Find Your Way
When you think of psychopaths you may think of the extreme examples, such as the serial killer. But psychopathy is a continuum. Because we all have a tendency to place the desires of our ego over those of our soul, God, and other people, we all share in the illness of the psychopath. Thus, one of

Allergy Relief: Maximum Prevention – Minimal Medicine Submitted By Jim Kenney
Allergy aggravating pollen is tough this time of year. With the strong winds of the Sierra Nevada and high desert, pollen is spread far and wide with pollen counts varying throughout the day. Weed, tree and grass particles can get in the air and easily travel into the home. Allergies and asthma can flair up, causing discomfort, which sends us reaching for a solution from the pharmacy or medicine cabinet. Consumers spend nearly $18 billion annually on asthma and allergy medications. But, they also spend more than $20 billion on non-medical consumer products marketed for people with asthma and allergies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). More than half of Americans test positive when exposed to one or more allergens, according to the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. More than half of all homes in the U.S. have at least six detectable allergens in the air, such as cat and dog dander, dust mites, pollen or mold spores. As the weather warms, more allergens are present in the air. Reducing the amount of allergens in your home can help improve indoor air quality and reduce your exposure to allergy triggers. Dust is a primary cause of allergies; and its particles can contain a witches-brew of irritants, such as insect droppings, pet dander, skin particles, food particles, mold spores and bacteria. Obviously, it is very difficult to avoid airborne triggers without Continued on Page 45.

sealing yourself into a bubble. But there are many ways to help reduce the impact of spring-induced allergies and minimize the medicines we take. Here are a few simple non-toxic, no drugs, no shots and natural tips to get you feeling better: • Shoes off: Take your shoes off before you enter the house, which leaves dirt, dust and particulate outside. Your house stays cleaner and your feet feel better. • Dust frequently: If you do it, be certain to cover your mouth and nose with an inexpensive, disposable mask that permits you to breathe, but minimizes the inhalation of dust particles. Dust with damp paper towels (not old rags) and do not reuse. • Keep Pets Clean: Dogs and cats easily bring pollen and mold particles inside. When reentering the house, give those paws a wipe with a damp paper towel, along with the coat’s surface. While this is somewhat helpful, it is important to groom your pet regularly during allergy season. • Change your HVAC Filters: HVAC filters are dirty from a long winter. Check your HVAC filters more often and change them every three months. Turning on the air conditioning with dirty filters can send particulate all around your house. • Keep your windows and doors closed: Open windows during high winds can really load your house with tons of pollen and particulate. • Careful with your Spring Cleaning: Be aware of the cleaning products you are using for your spring cleaning. Often these cleaning products are toxic and can add allergy and asthma triggers the household environment. Read labels carefully. • Use a portable air purifier: Effective placement and a good quality air purifier can provide excellent relief from allergy and asthma symptoms. An air purifier can remove the allergy triggers from the air, reducing the need for medicines. Your house is cleaner. We all want to enjoy this time of year, but it is impossible to control the outdoor environment. However, we can do many cost effective things in our home to make it as allergen free as possible. This will minimize our need for medicines and give us a place to come home to a healthy environment, with good quality air. HB

EAR CANDLING
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

Chiron Files Neptune Joins Chiron in Pisces
Written By Eric Francis
N
eptune entered Pisces a couple of weeks ago, joining Chiron in that sign. This is the full activation of Pisces, and combined, these transits are shifting the background of our lives. There may be other effects, which will be more or less subtle, depending on your relationship to your intuition, your emotional body and your creativity. This is the first time Neptune has entered Pisces since 1847, that is, long before the Civil War. So this development is news. Neptune, discovered in 1846, is considered to be the modern ruling planet of Pisces (the traditional ruling planet is Jupiter, which still counts). So for our time, this is significant. No living person has been through this transit; we are actually the first to experience something. What would that something be? Many have noticed that we’ve been growing more clairvoyant over the past few decades. Does anyone remember back when it was taboo to mention clairvoyance, as if it were the equivalent of admitting to Devil worship? Now it’s considered normal, if only because so many people experience it directly, or know someone who does. At least once in their lives, just about everyone has had a dream that gave a glimpse of the
future. From the first day, Chiron in Pisces emphasized the need for healing the ocean; BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill began within hours of it arriving. Neptune’s arrival has been synchronous with the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which is having profound effects on water as well. Yet both of these seem to be metaphors for the prevailing emotional state of humanity. Chiron is calling for awareness, and Neptune is calling for cleansing; we need both. Many people flee to “spiritual” solutions without recognizing that what they’re processing is much closer to the human realm. With healing on the level of water, it’s necessary to do the flush gradually. There are no fast solutions, though adding awareness is a very good first step, and adding water is an excellent second step. My take is that this involves drinking more water, and at the same time, cutting back on toxic substances in our diets and medicine cabinets. Every time you take a pharmaceutical product, I suggest you read the label and run the product through Google, looking for un-advertised effects. You might be surprised what you find. You may start noticing an increase or distinctive change in your dreaming patterns. For example, someone who never remembers his or her dreams might notice they’re remembering them vividly. Pisces has subtler frequencies, and these are often connected to imagery. We are bombarded with toxic images through news, advertising and cinema. Often, this is violent and manipulative--and it takes a toll both on wellbeing and creativity. I think

we would all be a lot more emotionally stable without advertising, and we would have a better sense of who we are. Indeed, if advertising promotes instability, the root is likely to be in getting us to doubt and even hate ourselves. With these Pisces factors being so strong, and lasting for so long (Chiron for eight years and Neptune for more than 12 years) we need to pay attention to these influences, and choose healthy inflows in this watery realm. This choice of what we take in is one of the most basic elements of emotional healing. Often, the more basic issue is being able to choose to let go of a toxic influence. How many times have you heard, or experienced, that one? The person who is in the damaging relationship or job, but cannot leave; for some reason they don’t understand? Then there is the Piscean theme of creativity. One sad fact of childhood is that the naturally spontaneous, precocious quality of children is gradually supplanted with adult versions of rationality. We may not think we miss our creativity; we may think that it is okay to let others do this for us; but I think that secretly or not, everyone craves being an expressive person. With all of this, Pisces is an invitation to express yourself; and this isn’t just a recreational indulgence. As my old therapist Joe is fond of saying, expression is the opposite of depression. Preheat oven to 350°F.
1. Blend together the eggs, oil or butter and the sugar and salt. 2. Thoroughly mix in the sifted coconut flour. 3. Stir in the coconut milk. 4. Heat 1 tbs. coconut oil in a small skillet. 5. Pour 1/4th of the batter into the skillet and immediately rotate the skillet until a thin even layer of batter covers the bottom of a 6 inch skillet. 6. Cook until crepe is bubbly and cooked around edges. Turn and cook other side. 7. This should make 4 crepes. Fill with fruit, nuts or jelly and roll up. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or whipped cream.
Arrange halibut in the middle of a 12-inch x 12-inch piece of parchment paper or foil. Drizzle both sides with oil (if using). Top with lemon and arrange tomatoes, artichoke hearts and parsley over the top and around the sides. Season all over with salt and pepper. Fold up parchment like a package, making sure the seam is at the top, to seal the ingredients inside; tuck under the ends. Transfer to a baking sheet and bake until fish is just cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer package to a plate and carefully open the parchment paper to release steam before serving.
