arch Cover Story As the cover story came to fruition, an interesting connection unfolded: a series of the number three. The month of March is the third Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar month of the year, according to the Gregorian calendar that we follow. The birthstone, Aquamarine, is derived from the mineral Beryl, which is composed of hexagonal crystals, a six-sided shape. There are also a few holidays many of us celebrate during the month of March that have a unique twist on the number three. Mardi Gras, or Carnival Season, is a celebration of the last supper--consisting of rich and fatty foods-before the ritual fasting during the Lenten (Lent) season. Mardi Gras is also known as “Fat Tuesday.” Following the seven week calendar, Tuesday is the third day of the week. St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday, celebrating St. Patrick, an Irish Priest who is commonly referenced and recognized as the champion of Irish Christianity. Irish folklore tells the story of St. Patrick using a shamrock, or three-leaf clover, to explain the Catholic theory of the Trinity (Father, Son & Holy Spirit). This brings us to our cover photo, the Red Clover. According to this month’s story on Red Clover in our Herbs and Spices department, “The small, red and pink flowers bloom up from the famous round leaves, which grow in clusters of three and have long been prized as a symbol of good luck.” No matter what you believe or celebrate, we hope that the month of March brings you happiness…and possibly, a little luck! Will the Internet kill magazines? Did instant coffee kill coffee? New technologies change many things. But not everything. You may surf, search, shop and blog online, but you still read magazines. And you are far from alone. Readership has actually increased over the past five years. Even the 18-34 segment continues to grow. And typical young adults now read more issues per month than their parents. Rather than being displaced by “instant” media, it would seem that magazines are the ideal complement. The explanation, while sometimes drowned out by the Internet drumbeat, magazines do what the Internet doesn’t. Neither obsessed with immediacy nor trapped by the daily news cycle, magazines promote deeper connections. They create relationships. They engage us in ways distinct from digital media. In fact, the immersive power of magazines extends to the advertising. Magazines remain the number one medium for driving purchase consideration and intent. And that’s essential in every product category.

Including coffee.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

Random Acts of Kindness

I

t happened one day that I had declared “that was it,” I had it with people! Why do they feel as if they can be rude in order to get their way? I had received a phone call from another business owner. She wanted something for almost free; she felt that she deserved it because of who she was and that her project was already costing her a lot of money. I politely said I could offer her a discount, yet my discount was not good enough, and then she began chastising me and saying that she heard I was a tough business woman. I politely and professionally ended the conversation.

A New You This Year

Before the call occurred, I was actually looking forward to speaking with her and then the call went 180 degrees from what I had expected. It got me thinking, what did I do or who kicked her cat that morning? I decided I needed a change of venue and went to one of my favorite coffee shops, Fairly Grounded off of Lakeside Drive. They make the best cappuccinos and I thought today, I will have a large. The young man questioned how many shots of caffeine I wanted, which led into a nice little chat about cappuccinos. When he handed me my drink, I tasted it and it was delicious, so off I went to the grocery store. After shopping for a half hour, I went to the checkout and in the process of getting ready to pay my bill, I noticed that my wallet was not i n my purse. “Oh Know,” I exclaimed and in a flash I saw where I had left my wallet which contained $200 cash and all of my credit cards. I paid the grocer with a check and ran to my car to call Fairly Grounded. My call must have sounded like a 911 On Star commercial, and after my hysterical message, the young man said “I have it here for you.” Off I went, back to Fairly Grounded, and picked up my wallet. I thanked Darrin at least three or four times. It is so delightful to know that there are honest and kind people in the world, and I have found that whoever does the hiring at Fairly Grounded does an excellent job! Thank you again Darrin, you are an angel.

Explore Music and activate your brain Written By Paula Eisenbarth

T

he year of 2011 is well under way with resolutions set, and perhaps, already abandoned. Opportunities still abound for enhancing day to day living, sharpening skills and magnifying joy. To this end, enter music, which offers the pleasure of sound and silence, whether you are listening to or performing the music yourself. There are ample electronic resources for bringing music of any kind into daily activities, as well as attending a live performance by a favorite artist or group. Despite these opportunities, why do human beings yearn to play an instrument or sing a melody? Why make music when one can just buy a ticket, press a button or pop in an earphone? The answer may rest in the very human yearning for physical and emotional expression. “Just as it is important to exercise different muscles, it is also important to exercise different parts of your brain. To do this, take on new cognitive activities…The most powerful activities are learning a new language or musical instrument,” according to Thomas Perls. If you are reading this article, then you are probably one of thousands of people who are conscious about healthy lifestyle. There is a desire to stretch life’s possibilities through physically stimulating activities, while bringing joy and comfort to the spirit. Learning to sing comfortably and pleasingly engages not only technical skills, but emotional response as well. Learning to play even the simplest melodies on a keyboard or guitar can bring the satisfaction of accomplishment and the tangible release of happiness or sadness or excitement. Music making can delve the individual into another world of notes and symbols, sounds and rhythms, while helping to relieve boredom or angst, or both. The study of music, although emotionally stimulating, is also a highly physical activity; which engages us in visual, aural, kinetic and mental facilities. Robert Jourdain believes that “Nothing is quite so demanding of a brain as musical performance, which involves the choreography of hundreds of muscles, eyes moving across instrument and score, ears following every nuance…emotions summoned and deployed.” There are large muscle groups to engage, small muscle movements to refine, breathing patterns to control, endurance to build--akin to becoming proficient at any sport or craft. The study of music can be accomplished on your own or by enlisting a qualified teacher who can enhance the learning experience. Under the guidance of a professional, technical March 2011

training expands into an expressive, accelerated course of study. In our busy and often overscheduled lives, the student-teacher relationship not only provides an organized, efficient way of learning, but much needed human to human interaction and discourse. From the first sounds drummed in caves, to the most exquisite melodies performed by an accomplished artist, music has lured with open arms; it has regaled, soothed and challenged each individual to respond. Whether the music that enters your life is through relaxed listening or hands on learning, music is a dynamic addition to a healthy, active lifestyle. HB References: 1. Red Clover:

Good luck for the Garden Written By Allison Prater

T

in the early spring, and once the fruits and vegetables have been harvested, the clover may be turned over into the soil, to break down over the winter, blessing you with a fertile garden bed the following spring. Red clover blossoms may be dried and used in a pleasant tasting tea. It is often used in combination with other herbs to nourish pregnant and breast feeding women, as well as to treat skin conditions, coughs and blood infections. Red Clover gently purifies the blood, helping to eliminate heavy metals and other environmental contaminants, while nourishing the body with its abundance of trace minerals. It is also mildly antispasmodic, which means it can ease nervous excitability, twitching and spasm. It is gentle enough to give to children who have recurring respiratory problems, such as colds, hay fever, asthma, ear infections or congestion. Below is a recipe for a simple herbal tea, suitable for pregnant women and their families. The tea may be used daily throughout pregnancy and into the postpartum period to promote milk production. The high mineral content makes this an excellent nutritive herbal tea that is beneficial for most individuals.

rifolium pretense, or Red Clover, is a member of the legume family and a cousin to the sweet pea. The small, red and pink flowers bloom up from the famous round leaves, which grow in clusters of three and have long been prized as a symbol of good luck. This perennial plant is native to Europe, Western Asia and northwest Africa. Today, it grows all over the world. In our modern western times, clover is sometimes considered a common weed that needs to be sprayed with poison pesticides in order to maintain a lawn of green. It is truly a shame and a waste when this occurs, for not only is the plant attractive, it serves many useful purposes in both garden and medicine chest, and is delicious besides. In the garden, clover is an excellent green manure crop. Planting clover in a field a year before planting other garden vegetables is an inexpensive, environmentally sound source of nitrogen. D i sc ov er i n g

fter a serious injury, piles of medications and treatments that were not working, I turned to Qigong for help. This experience led me down a path toward healing and serenity. My injury occurred during one of my regular shifts as a flight attendant. It was a normal day, which always included assisting customers with their luggage. As I was helping one gentleman lift his bag up over our heads, he let go and the heavy bag landed on my head, neck and shoulders. I ended up with injuries that would change my life: two ruptured discs in my neck and a torn rotator cuff. I did what most of us do and went to see the doctor. My doctor prescribed me some muscle relaxers, pain medication and anti-inflammatory medication and sent me home. After about a month of taking medications, I decided to see another doctor. This doctor continued to prescribe the same medications and had me start physical therapy. At the time of the accident, my neck mobility was about 30-40 percent. This new doctor informed me that I would be a candidate for neck surgery. He explained that they would fuse my C5-C6 vertebrae together and that if I chose this route of treatment, the best case scenario for my neck would be 60-70 percent mobility. My doctor also suggested that my airline pay to send me back to school because he did not want me performing certain aspects of my job. He mentioned that he would most likely recommend that I be put on permanent disability. Hearing this diagnosis and treatment plan left me feeling extremely discouraged. I felt hopeless in thinking that my whole life was changing, and not for the better. At 29 years old, I was going to have major physical limitations to my body and have to give up a job that I truly loved. I shared these feelings and concerns with a friend of mine and he suggested I see a couple that did Japanese restoration massage. I was getting some relief from the massage and physical therapy, but was still in quite a bit of pain. One day, I noticed the word “Qigong” on their business card and asked them what that was? He said, “I think it will really help you.” We began practicing qigong once a week and continued for about three months. They informed me that a Grandmaster of Emei Qigong was teaching a four day seminar in San Francisco. So I decided to go to the seminar. I came home from the level one seminar and continued practicing a form called Wuji Gong . I practiced this for the next six months and noticed that I had feeling again in my elbow and fingers that were previously numb. The sharp pain I felt in my neck and shoulder started to dissipate. I started noticing tingling and heat sensations in my body. I felt movement inside my body and the pain was starting to go away. I could feel positive changes in my attitude and my hopelessness was being replaced with hope and optimism. I started thinking that there really was something to this practice called Emei Qigong. I discovered a type of healing that was working to heal so many things in my life that not only included my physical body and injuries, but my emotional state and my spirit. So I continued to study with Grandmaster Fu Wei Zhong in taking Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Emei Qigong Written By Kirstin Manning

levels one, two, three and four over the next five years. During these teachings, I learned many techniques that have not only alleviated pain in my body but have helped balance my emotional state so I can continue to experience self- awareness and spiritual development. Qigong’s origin dates back at least 5000 years. The word “Qi” means life force, breath or energy and the word “Gong” means practice or cultivation over time. Emei Qigong was formed in 1227 AD, so it has been around for roughly 800 years. Emei Qigong comes from one of the three Buddhist Mountains in China. There are many types of qigong that are practiced in China and throughout the world; Emei Qigong focuses on healing, self-awareness, virtue and spiritual development. Emei Qigong’s knowledge and practice was developed from 3600 different schools of thought that include Buddhism, Daoism, traditional Chinese medicine, ancient Chinese philosophies, astrology and nutrition, to name a few. This comprehensive system was passed down from lineage holder to lineage holder, in order to maintain the purity of knowledge and information that is at its core. Grandmaster Fu Wei Zhong is the 13th and current lineage holder of Emei qigong. His goal is “to pass on all his knowledge and Emei qigong’s teachings to alleviate much of the suffering in the world, so humanity can shine like the sun.” Emei qigong focuses on self-healing first so that you can then help in healing others. Some of the techniques Emei qigong teaches are Wuji Gong, meditation, feeling Qi, understanding the five causes of illness, Emei sacred healing sounds, Qi information healing, Qi transmission healing and the theories that go along with them. Diabetes at Your Doorstep

iabetes, from the Greek, a siphon, to pass through; and mellitus, from the Greek word for honey, is a condition characterized by an excess of sugar in the blood and urine, frequent urination, hunger, thirst and gradual loss of weight. The urine is so sugary that it is known to attract ants. There are two main types of diabetes. Juvenile (frequently happens in children) diabetes is an autoimmune disorder that attacks the pancreas (see diagram) and kills the Islets of Langerhan’s, which produce insulin; the hormone that takes sugar (glucose) across the cell membranes of the body and brings it to the mitochondria (energy powerhouse of the cell) to create energy (ATP). Without insulin, the body goes into a state of trying to metabolize fat (producing ketones); which gives a fruity smell to the breath and can quickly cause fatal disability and death. It has a genetic component. The more modern plague is Type II diabetes, or adult onset diabetes. It is caused by a faulty lifestyle, metabolic syndrome, obesity and overconsumption of refined carbohydrates, such as sugar and high fructose corn syrup. It can be fatal, but is a slow-burn cause of death through small and large blood vessel narrowing, blindness, kidney failure, neuropathy (burning feet and nerves), and causes a great increase in the incidence of heart attack and stroke. Could This Happen To You? According to the National Diabetes Data Factsheet, 25.8 million adults and children have diabetes, that’s 8.3 percent of the population. There are also 7 million undiagnosed diabetics and 79 million prediabetics. In 2010, 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed in patients 20 years or older. The normal standard of blood tests for blood glucose is 100 mg/dl or below. Mild diabetes blood sugars can run up to 130mg/dl. High blood sugar can range up into the 500 mg/dl level or higher. At this level, patients start having ketoacidosis and go into a coma. Long term blood sugar monitoring

is measured with a hemoglobin A1c blood test; which gives an average blood sugar for the previous several weeks. A number under six is usually thought to be below a diabetic level. There are many factors that contribute to diabetes. Eating foods high on the glycemic index (a measure of how fast foods turn to glucose in the blood) aggravates the diabetes tendency. Most patients with gangrene, lack of circulation to the toes, feet and below the knees also have diabetes. This is caused by a lack of arterial circulation to the extremities and leads to amputations. However, atherosclerotic heart disease, heart attacks and heart failure are the leading cause of death in diabetics. In diabetics, coronary heart disease accounted for 53.3 percent of deaths. After an initial heart attack, 38 percent died and 57 percent of those with a subsequent heart attack also died. At this point, it seems clear that eating healthfully is a good idea. Next month’s column will focus on all the things you need to do to keep from developing diabetes, as well as treatments to help this life threatening disorder. HB References: 1. Rosacea When it’s not just a

“rosy” complexion

What causes Rosacea? There are many theories as to the cause, such as poor circulation, sluggish lymph, genetic predisposition, digestive disorders, bacteria, and even mites attached to cells. Some factors that affect Rosacea flare-ups are weather, emotional influences, beverages, foods, physical exertion, temperature-related, prescription drugs, medical conditions and skin care products. So you’re probably thinking, wow, is there anything that is good for people who have Rosacea? The good news is that there are products and facial treatments that really help, if used consistently. It will not take it away, but rather minimize flare ups, so you can look your best every day. There are three stages of Rosacea and given that it is a progressive disorder, it is very important for you to be aware of what you should and should not do. Consult an aesthetician or practitioner who deals with skin disorders if you have questions about Rosacea. HB References: 1. Rhonda Allison Professional Workbook at www.rhondaallison.com. naltered essential oils are naturally perfected recipes for strength and survival. Due to the unique complexity of any given complete oil, it is impossible for bacteria to develop a resistance to it, or for anyone to patent it. Given the its complexity, skill and care are needed to extract the genuine, authentic, total array of components of a plant’s essential oil, and the processor (usually a distiller) needs to make a living as well--“fair trade” does not go on sale. There are just a few companies that exist and deal only with pure and unaltered essential oils (EOs), taking pride in the quality of the product. (This would NOT include MLMs). Some of the most effective EOs are quite expensive, reflecting the percentage of plant material required to produce them. Most are moderately priced. However, one or two drops at a time is a common optimal dose. Less is truly more. So, a 5 ml. bottle, at least 100 drops, will last a long time.

The unaltered EO recipe is exact, having been evolving for millennia, and may contain hundreds of components. The best measurements we have currently cannot identify all of them. For example, Frankincense is still about 60 percent unidentified. Yet, its historical use and significance is document, and there is current evidence that it plays a big role in cancer treatments. However, when we insist on “clinical trials,” we actually trivialize the potential of the EOs. While the chemistry of a particular oil is important, it does not tell the whole story. Biologically, natural is different from synthetic in a few important ways, including the tonic effect, with an overall individualized balancing result. EOs are self-regulating; for example, if there is no need for a particular component, it simply does not fire and will not cause possible side effects. Currently there is no industrial interest in researching complete EOs. Ultimately, direct experience will be the deciding factor regarding ongoing personal use. Does it work for you?

en it h w r e t t ils... The mind-body-immunity connection is generally aca O m l ” s a i e t o n d e “ s Es Price cepted today. There is no better example of strengthening comes to all the inner systems than with pure EO aromatherapy and massage. EOs are also delivered via inhalation, or internal use (as advised by a trained aromatherapist). Your body and spirit consist of uncountable interactions. An essential oil (or blend) works harmoniously to enhance them all. But it must be the real thing. HB References: 1. Valnet, J. The Practice of Aromatherapy. Healing Arts Press, 1990. 2. The complete synergy of each batch of EO has been demonstrated to be more effective than any single component. EOs cannot be produced in mass quantities and still retain the complexity that makes them effective. This means they cannot be preserved, standardized or otherwise “enhanced.” A common “enhancement” is to pump up the most aromatic component(s), which can be obtained from less expensive oils. The product 40/42 lavender is very popular, but in fact true lavender contains much less linalool and linalyl acetate--never more than 70 percent combined. This practice is so pervasive that customers sometimes reject the true lavender for the “louder,” less expensive, version. Though the fragrance may be amped up, the healing bouquet is diminished. Outgrowing Your Problems Written by Andy

Drymalski, EdD

T

he greatest and most important problems in life are all fundamentally insoluble. They can never be solved, but only outgrown.” Carl Jung Your honest response to this quote by Carl Jung might be, “Outgrow my problems?! Are you crazy? I don’t have time to outgrow my problems! I need answers. I need relief. And I need them now!” Your perspective is understandable at one level. You live in a highly technological and fast-paced world. You are used to solving your problems using science and logic, and you believe in the power of the mind over matter. Like most people, you prefer solutions to be swift and painless. Our society places great faith in the mind’s ability to figure things out. This perspective empowers and exalts the mind. It provides a sense of security and control when you believe that your problems can be solved. However, the idea that life’s challenges must be outgrown rather than solved is not very empowering to your ego. It implies that growth and healing proceed by their own rules and wisdom. Like placing a plant in a greenhouse, you may be able to quicken the growth process, but you cannot short-cut it. The power of your mind and will are limited. Sometimes suffering is a necessary part of the growth and healing process. Isn’t this part of the reason you want to solve your problems rather than outgrow them? You want a short-cut through the pain, insecurity, confusion, despair and frustration. You would prefer to go from seedling to full-grown tree without the struggle for sunshine, the cold winters, dry summers, harsh winds and broken limbs.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Medications purport to solve your emotional and psychological problems, but all that they really solve is your symptoms. The underlying problem remains. In fact, the problem is likely to remain longer, for the symptoms that would have spurred your growth have been relieved. Without the tension created by your symptoms, there is no growth. It is like a young tree that receives all the water it needs from the backyard sprinkler system. Its roots congregate in the top few inches of the soil where water is abundant. As a result, it never develops a deep root system because it has never had to reach deep for its water. Not surprisingly, it is one of the first trees to blow over in a strong wind. People are much the same. Without tension, pain, and struggle, you grow shallow roots and are easily pushed over when the stronger spiritual and emotional storms of life occur. “Sometimes suffering is a necessary part of the growth and healing process”.

ing on to its next lesson. Your life is not a problem to be solved, but a mystery to be wrestled with. The analytical mind looks at a situation and sees a simple straight line between a problem and its solution. “All you need to do is this,” you say to yourself or your friends. But your soul is more concerned with the development of your character than the solution of your problems. From the soul’s perspective, the only path between two points is a labyrinth. You cheat yourself and your soul when you go around, rather than through your problems. HB References: 1. Chitwood, Terry, EdD. Death: The Beginning of Life. Similar to other helping professions, psychology likes to imagine that problems can be solved rather than outgrown. In fact, what is called “solution focused” psychotherapy is quite popular nowadays (especially with insurance companies). The drawback of therapies that focus on symptom relief without attention to the underlying psychological process is that the problem just pops up again. For example, you can use divorce to “solve” a bad marriage, but unless you have grown through and learned from the experience, you are likely to just hook up with a new version of your ex-spouse. Similarly, you can teach someone to be assertive, without helping them to find their voice. You can train a criminal to obey rules, but you may just get a criminal with a new skill set. Or, you can help someone to think positive thoughts about them self, but this may just create an unhappy person who thinks they like them self.

Mental Techniques for Financial Empowerment

of it, you get some of the same emotions as when you originally experienced it. Or if it is a fear of what might happen in the future, your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference, and gives you the emotions to match that thought.

Use the Latest Quantum Physics Processes To Live Your Very Best Life

The third thing that happens is that the vibrational frequency of every thought floods all 50 trillion cells, and causes that pharmaceutical company in your body to manufacture chemicals and hormones which match the thought. If your thoughts are positive, your body manufactures endorphins and serotonin, the feel-good hormones. If your thoughts are negative or fearful, your body manufactures cortisol, the stress hormone, which damages your cells and compromises your immune system. So one of the most powerful techniques to ensure good health and a happy life is to quickly pivot your thoughts away from negatives to something you really want to do, so that you can attract to yourself the things you DO want rather than what you DON’T want. M o s t people are too lazy to do this, so they keep creating unwanted situations, ailments, aches and pains for themselves without knowing why. If you have a challenge, take care of it as soon as possible so you can get back to thinking of what you DO want.

y now, even those living in a cave know that their thoughts, beliefs and expectations create their reality. The trick is to have some effective techniques to put this knowledge into use, so that we see results sooner rather than later. We need to substitute some new mental habits. I know that if everyone around you is still playing the same old song and dancing the same old dance, it’s hard not to go along with them. But that is an old mental habit, adopted mainly to please them, so they won’t kick you out of the tribe. But think about it. Do you really need to be a dedicated member of that particular tribe? It is time to think for yourself. Three things happen when we think a thought. The first thing is that the vibrational frequency of that thought (just like a radio signal) goes out into this energy soup we live in, into what physicists call the “field of all probabilities,” and attracts back to us the people, conditions and situations which match the thought. That thought also gives us the emotions to match, which drive our words and actions, which then go to make up our lives.

We think about 50,000 thoughts a day, but if they’re the same old thoughts, we keep creating the same old day. Beliefs are just thoughts we keep on thinking often enough that we convince ourselves they are true. Expectations are just chronic thoughts that you don’t realize you’re thinking. Everything comes back to thought. We get what we focus on, whether we want it or not. So when you control your thoughts, you control your life.

The second thing that happens when we think a thought is that thought goes from our conscious mind into the subconscious mind, and since the subconscious cannot tell the difference between real and pretend, it thinks that thought we are thinking has actually happened to us again today, and gives us the emotions to match; just like clockwork, our emotions drive our words and actions, which make up our lives. Even if that incident you are thinking about happened 30 years ago, when you think Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Develop a juicy visualization of where you want to go and what you want to do, something that makes you re22

ally happy when you think about it. Imagine that time and money is no object, and imagine going to that very special place for a vacation. Make your visualization as detailed as possible, including the sights, smells, tastes and sounds. Use all the senses and then FEEL the emotions you’d feel if you were there now. This is a powerful technique. CEOs and professional athletes use this method all the time to pre-pave their future success. People who have big goals and dreams, and are focused on achieving them, use this type of structured visualization which utilizes both sides of the brain; the logical linear side and the creative side. The desire is the engine, but the emotion is the fuel, so when you add emotion to your visualization, you make it real and propel it forward into your future. When you put up pictures of your goal, you add another dimension of power. We have this brilliant built-in system to get what we want, but so few of us adults have the knowledge or determination to actually use it. We didn’t learn it as kids so we pooh-pooh it or say, “I don’t have time.” You don’t have time to learn how to create and live your goals and dreams?”

JOKES:

Kids are open-minded and eager to try new things. If they were taught how to use these simple techniques now, there is nothing in life that they could not achieve. They would very quickly see that these methods work, and they would use them for everything…sports, friends, school, etc., creating their life as they go along, reaping the benefits of increased self-confidence and a genuine feeling of empowerment. Continuing to look at “what is” rather than what you want is like looking straight down while you’re driving. Imagine there’s a hole in the floor and you’re seeing what is, what is, what is, as it goes by real fast and becomes the past, the past, the past. As we focus and concentrate only on “what is” then we’re not able to control our lives, because that “what is” is gone in a second. We’re not able to create a successful future because we’re so obsessed with “what is” going on right now. People are used to talking about “what is.” Try talking about what you WANT. Try looking ahead, not only to see where you’re going, but to decide where you’re going. Not only is it a lot safer and a lot more interesting, but you’ll actually be controlling your life and consciously creating your future. Quantum physicists know that there are many dimensions, not just this three dimensional reality we’re currently living in. They have been able to scientifically prove at least eleven dimensions in addition to this one and they theorize that there may be an infinite number. What if you knew that there was another “you” living in March 2011

23

other dimensions? What if you knew that there is a “you” who is a successful businessperson, or an accomplished artist, or a brilliant lawyer, a totally fulfilled and successful parent, a published author, a healthy and vital and energetic you; and what if you were able to ask that you for advice on becoming successful in that area? There’s a program called Quantum Jumping which teaches just that technique. Go to www.quantumjumping.com to find out more about it. It’s estimated that we use about five percent of our brain’s potential. Einstein thought that he used maybe ten percent. In this time of accelerated living, where things seem to be hurtling at us from every direction…it is time to develop some new mind techniques that will let us become all that we can be and live our very best lives. But, it will have to be a conscious decision; it will have to be “on purpose.” Just living by default, going through the motions, just existing, watching too much TV, focusing only on “what is,” doesn’t do it. We feel anxious about our lives, we procrastinate, we long for peace or clarity, and we know that we’re not living our potential. Henry David Thoreau wrote that, “Most [people] lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” No more! Not you! Take your power back! Use your brilliant built-in systems to live a life of joy and fulfillment. Use your mind for your highest purpose, and thrive! HB References: 1. Breakthroughs in Allergy Treatment Written By Dr. Richard Ketring, DC

orty to fifty millionSleep Americans Sleep, Blessed II suffer from allergies to pollen, pets, sagebrush, foods, plants, drugs, etc. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that over 20 percent of the world population experience allergic conditions, with symptoms of a running nose, burning and watery eyes, congestion and asthma. Food allergies among children have increased 18 percent from 1997 to 2007. Milk, eggs and nuts are among the top food allergies. Allergies cost the health care system over $18 billion annually. It is estimated to be the sixth leading cause of chronic diseases in the United States. Allergies are noted as an over-reaction or hypersensitivity of the immune system to certain substances. These substances, called allergens, would normally be harmless to the body. In the case of a hypersensitivity reaction, an abnormal and vigorous immune response takes place in order to fight off the allergen, as if it were a bacteria, virus or foreign object. A person can develop this hypersensitivity at any age and to just about any substance. Some people develop an allergic reaction to something they have worked with or have been around for years. After 30 years of research in the allergy related fields, computerized electrodermal screening, and biofeedback medical devices, the NRG Immune Enhancement System has introduced a Digital Conductance Meter. This Neurological Response Generator System (NRG), which is both a patented and FDA cleared biofeedback device, uses neurological stress reduction therapy to alter the body’s perception and response to both external and internal stressors. This stimulation causes a release of hormones, which creates a new positive association with these allergenic substances. The body and nervous system become desensitized to the previously stressful substances and reduce or eliminate the allergic response. Previously, therapies using similar

Experience New Ways to Enhance Your Customized Massage

Enjoying the Benefits of Massage Therapy

O

Written By Victoria Linn LMT. NVMT #1002

ur skin is the largest sensory organ in the body, which is one of the reasons we enjoy being touched, and yet massage is not merely skin deep! The art of therapeutic touch, or massage, has been around since ancient civilization. Evidence suggests that prehistoric people massaged their muscles and rubbed herbs, oils, and various substances on their bodies to heal and protect. In many cultures, special healers were said to have the power to heal by touch alone. Studies show that we hold cellular memory, sometimes called “body memory,” which implies that all sensation is stored in the cells of muscles, bones and connective tissue. The plethora of emotions we experience such as joy, sorrow, daily stress or sudden trauma, can cause problems ranging from annoying discomfort and pain, to becoming potentially debilitating. When our natural state of feeling calm, energetic and capable are upset by too much stress or a sudden crisis, the body responds by going into a state of “flight or fight,” which is appropriate for a small amount of time, but is detrimental if it becomes a normal way of life. Therapeutic massage helps our tissues exchange stress hormones and other waste products for fresh nutrients. This helps to increase the blood and oxygen supply in the circulatory system and increases the flow of the lymphatic system, which in turn allows for more energy, increased ability to stay healthy and gain clarity of mind; which allows both body and mind to return to a more relaxed and balanced state. The benefits have been so inspiring that known authors such as Hippocrates, Homer and Herodotus have written on the subject! There are many different types of massage therapy, or bodywork. Currently, the most popular in this country are Swedish (relaxing,) deep tissue, sports, hot stone, Reflexology (feet) Acupressure and prenatal. Some others include Thai, Lomi Lomi (Hawaiian) and Tui-Na (Chinese.) Each style offers particular techniques and purpose, based on years of practice and results. There are also several techniques that use the hands without touching the body. This is referred to as energy work and is used for people and animals alike. Reiki, Cranial Sacral, Ortho-Bionomy and Reconnect are the most commonly practiced. Continued from Page 28. March 2011

Past Injuries, Chronic Pain and TMJ

C

Written By Kim McIntire, Certified Rolf® Practitioner

rash! Boom! Smash! A car accident, no matter how minor the impact, is no small thing. A “minor” whiplash, bump to the knee, sprained ankle, and the emotions (fear, anger, sadness) that go along with the accident, if not treated, can cause chronic pain and have a lasting effect upon the physical and emotional body years down the road. Any past injury, surgery, or incision in the body, can cause scar tissue to build. The fibrous connective tissue (fascia) of the body is like a tight knitted shirt. It forms and shapes the body and when it is snagged (scar tissue) it will distort and apply strain in many different directions. This distortion can have an affect far from the initial injury. “TMD is not one disorder, but a group of conditions, often painful, that occur when chewing muscles and jaw joints do not work together correctly,” according to website information. Headaches, jaw popping, limited motion of the jaw and clenching are all symptom of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction. Recently, a study revealed that 53 percent of sufferers had some level of depression, while 22 percent had insomnia or fatigue due to disrupted sleep patterns. There may be tight muscles or nerve impindgment within the jaw itself causing the TMJ. The question is are the muscles tight because of what has occured to them or is there a misalignment or other stress in another part of the body, causing the jaw to become sore and inoperable? During a car accident, numerous injuries may have occured. A major injury during a rear end collision may be whiplash. A whiplash is when a force (the car accident) is transfered into a person causing a rapid flexion and extension of the neck. This rapid movement may cause injury to the vertebra, disks, nerves, brain and soft tissues of the neck. A whiplash can also occur during a slip and fall, resulting in the head hitting the ground. If you have ever had a hard time picking your head up from the pillow the next day after a fall, you may have suffered a whiplash.

Those seeking to find alternative ways to monitor stress, relax and feel better, are choosing massage, and feel better about themselves for doing so. As always, be sure to check with your doctor if you have any health concerns or think you may be pregnant. You will find that receiving a therapeutic massage is by far one of the most satisfying and relaxing ways to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally and physically. The best part is that all you have to do is show up and your therapist does the rest! Continued from Page 27. Since the body is one unit, the force of the impact does not stop at the neck, but can travel up and down the entire length of the body. This, in turn, can cause chronic pain and TMJ in the future. A car accident can also trigger the fight or flight response in the nervous system. That is the shaky feeling experienced after getting very excited or scared. If the nervous system is not reset, the person lives in that pattern day to day which can cause stress, excessive energy expenditure, and clenching of the teeth therefore causing TMJ and chronic pain. Prevention is key to keeping your body healthy, but accidents do happen. When injured, search for a health care provider that will take into account the whole body, in order to find the underlying cause of the chronic pain. Rolfing® and Neural Mobilization may be a path to your health and well-being. Weight Loss Through

Colon Cleansing Written by Carol Christian

A

major issue, both in the United States and virtually all over the world, is obesity. Aside from genetics and more than just overeating, overweight is usually due to consuming large amounts of unhealthy, inorganic foods that the body is not designed to handle. A direct result of consuming these “junk foods over a period of time, is a colon that is coated with an accumulation of waste and toxic matter. This condition is not only responsible for overweight, but can eventually lead to other digestive diseases unknown to our ancestors who subsisted on a diet of natural foods. A myriad of diets and diet pills found on the market today do not, because they cannot address the problem of

March 2011

overweight from where it needs to be addressed. What they do achieve, however, is frustration and needless expense for the millions of people who put their trust in these unnatural and unhealthy methods of weight loss. Colon hydrotherapy, on the other hand, combined with a complete bowel cleansing routine, is a safe, simple, and completely natural way towards maintaining an efficient digestive system. This should be the goal ‌ not a quick fix weight-loss pill, shake, or fad diet. An efficient digestive system is the only natural and healthy way to lose weight and rid the body of harmful toxins at the same time! Unlike the quick fixes on the market today, colon cleansing is not a one-time only approach to weight loss. It must be done on a regular basis to maintain a healthy and efficient digestive system. The rewards not only include looking slimmer, but becoming more energized as well as skin that is noticeably smoother. In addition, nutrients taken into the system are better absorbed by the body when the digestive system is functioning as nature intended it to. An overworked or unclean bowel can easily lead to liver, kidney, lungs and skin problems.

29

These organs are forced to work harder to rid your body of toxins and you can feel the effects in a number of ways other than bowel disorders. A toxic overload can cause bad breath, skin eruptions, headaches, cough, fatigue, body odor and can even affect memory. You could be walking around with 5 to 25 pounds of old fecal matter in your colon. What about fasting? When combined with colonics, the process is expedited. A colonic gently cleanses the last five feet of the digestive tract that can help to strengthen a weakened bowel and it is completely non-addictive. Your colon hydrotherapist can easily identify the foods, vitamins and minerals that are not being properly absorbed, along with identifying yeast, parasites and mucus. The entire digestive system benefits from having a clean bowel. HB References: 1) International Association of Colon Hydrotherapist (I-ACT) 2)American Association on Natural Medicine

BOOKREVIEW

H

ave yo u e ve r wondered why certain people or situations turn you on? Just what is the driving force behind your deepest sexual desires? Author Jack Morin, answers these questions and more in his book “The Erotic Mind: Unlocking the Inner Sources of Sexual Passion and Fulfillment.” He describes his book as a “guide to deep exploration of your most important turn-on’s--how they work, what they mean, how they can work against you, and what to do about it if they do.” Morin compassionately invites his readers to explore their erotic side, and offers non-judgmental support page after page. In order to fully experience what this book has to offer, Morin asks his readers to keep an erotic journal. He poses questions throughout the book that challenges one to delve deep inside their mind; to remember their own peak erotic experiences. A Sexual Excitement Survey, developed by Morin himself, asks numerous questions regarding these experiences. The survey sets the stage for the reader, as they can look back at their answers and recognize recurring themes or patterns in their erotic mind. Perhaps one of the most compelling aspects of “The Erotic Mind” is the way that Morin, a practicing psychotherapist and sex therapist, interweaves his client’s most erotic turn-ons throughout each chapter. As a reader, it is pleasantly surprising to relate to some of these excerpts, and realize that you are not the only person out there turned on by their descriptive encounters. Morin states, “You’ll open new pathways to sexual satisfaction by reading about other people’s erotic truths--the ones that rarely are given a voice--while simultaneously attending to your own.” Personally, and professionally, I can attest to the sexual self-empowerment that “The Erotic Mind” provides for its readers. As an instructor of Advanced Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Human Sexuality at the University of Nevada Reno, I decided to add the book to my curriculum. I realized, after reading it myself, that it would greatly benefit my students. While reading “The Erotic Mind,” I found myself wishing that I would have stumbled upon Morin’s guidance earlier in life. However, I am grateful that 200 students a year get to experience his guidance, and apply it to the rest of their lives. If you decide to purchase a copy of “The Erotic Mind,” expect the benefits of understanding of your own erotic mind to be immeasurable. HB References: 1. Morin, J. Navigating the Changes of Perimenopause

T

he kids are out of the house; you’ve finally gotten that corner office and you no longer feel the need to change your wardrobe monthly to keep up with the latest fashions. The hard part’s over--right? Then why do so many women find these prime years of life fraught with physical and emotional turmoil, symptoms which are often dismissed or quickly camouflaged with antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, painkillers or even major surgeries? The years when a woman is transitioning between regular cycles of ovulation and menopause, is known as perimenopause. For most women this occurs during their forties, but many notice changes even earlier. During perimenopause, production of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone begins to decline. Cycles may not always result in the release of an egg, contributing to irregular menses and for some, an increase in PMS symptoms. As hormone levels drop, many women begin to experience hot flashes, sweats and problems sleeping. Symptoms may also include memory and concentration issues, mood swings, depression and anxiety. All of these are worsened by both loss of sleep and the emotional stressors common during these years. Other issues that commonly arise are fatigue, dry or itchy skin, hair loss or breakage, palpitations, joint and muscle aches, weight gain, headaches, and vaginal dryness which may progress to cause bladder, yeast and other vaginal infections. Furthermore, as the protective effects of estrogen wane, women have a greater rate of developing osteoporosis, high cholesterol and heart disease. With a list of problems like that, it’s no surprise women want to control their symptoms. For many, a low dose oral contraceptive will provide baseline hormone levels while also minimizing risk of pregnancy, which is still a possibility during this time. Others may choose a customized program of bio-identical hormone support of estrogen, progesterone, and occasionally testosterone or DHEA. At home, daily lifestyle choices are key. Drink plenty of water to prevent sodium re-

March 2011

tention. Avoid refined carbohydrates which contribute to insulin spikes and falls, worsening mood swings and contributing to weight gain. Eat multiple small meals per day containing a balanced mix of lean protein, colorful vegetables and healthy oils. For women who aren’t already supplementing, now is the time to start a multivitamin regimen with adequate calcium, vitamin D, B vitamins and fish oil--all things you will need more during this phase of your life. Both alcohol and caffeine can bring on hot flashes, as can a variety of stressors including spicy foods. If these are an issue, keep a journal to identify and eliminate symptom triggers. Women who smoke experience ovarian failure and menopause several years sooner than their non-smoking counterparts and often have a greater fall in hormone levels. If you haven’t already, do anything you can to cut down or quit. A regular program of exercise that encompasses cardio, weight-bearing and relaxation elements is one of the best things you can do to minimize symptoms as well as the dangerous changes that come with menopause-osteoporosis, increased visceral fat and heart disease. It can also improve the sleep disturbances common to many women. Finally, some women benefit from natural remedies including black cohosh, chasteberry, St. John’s Wort and a variety of natural phytoestrogens from soy, red clover and flax seed. These can improve your symptoms, lipids and osteoporosis, but be sure to discuss their use with

your physician as they can interact with other medications and medical problems. Your doctor may also need to evaluate you to make sure that other medical issues such as thyroid dysfunction, fibroids, endometriosis, or cancer aren’t causing some of your symptoms. Talk with them, both to determine whether other medical problems need to be excluded and also to see if hormones or other medications could help. Listening to your own rhythms as your body transitions, and making sure that you are meeting your body’s changing needs will help you move through these years healthy, balanced and sane. Sex Addiction: Misnomer? Written By Dr. Tory Clark

equates sex as sin; which makes the criteria moralistic, not scientific. Pathologizing and exploiting one’s sexuality through labeling them as a sex addict should be handled with caution. Sexual behavior that is normal for one person may be completely abnormal through another’s eyes. For example, if one partner likes to masturbate to erotic images and their partner considers it abnormal behavior, they may be labeled as a sex addict.

“C

alling sex an addiction has an unmistakable tendency to instigate or escalate fighting with one’s sexuality. This I can say for certain: If you go to war with your sexuality, you will lose, and end up in more trouble than before you started.” Jack Morin (excerpt from The Erotic Mind) Tiger Woods, Jesse James, and David Duchovny probably come to mind when the words “sex addiction” come up in conversation. Our media had a field day with these celebrity stories and the public served as the judge and jury without a clear understanding of the term sex addiction; therefore, a few points stand to be addressed.

Ultimately, if a person’s sexual behavior is causing a breakdown of meaningful relationships, the loss of job opportunities, sexually transmitted infections, and unwanted pregnancies, they may need to seek professional help. Exploring why the compulsive behaviour developed, and how it can be changed is essential; which, is a process of learning about and understanding your behaviour, and how to implement healthier changes. HB

First, the term “addiction” should not be tossed around so freely. People with addictions to alcohol or heroin, have tolerance and withdrawal symptoms; their body and brain undergo major physical and neurological changes. For example, Delirium Tremens (DTs) is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal causing body tremors. Sex addiction does not foster symptoms such as these, and if they are present, as psychologist Michael Bader states, “They don’t govern the addict’s life in the same way that, say, opiates do. Sex addicts get anxious when they can’t get their “fix”--they don’t go into DTs.” Sex addiction is really a compulsive behavior. Activities such as shopping, gambling, eating and yes, sex, are behaviors that one can become compulsive over. Essentially, they are searching for something to “fix” their psychological pain through repetitive compulsive acts. Feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness are temporarily relieved through a sexual high.

Secondly, how can we label someone as a “sex addict,” when clear scientific criteria does not exist as to what constitutes “normal” levels of sexual behavior? Unfortunately, our society Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

The kitchen location is very important; unfortunate locations can influence such things as illness, arguments, family problems, financial loss and weight gain. The important factors for a stove are its location, direction and placement. A stove represents the element fire; therefore, based on its location, we analyze what type of energy is being burned and the influence on the house and people. A stove can benefit health and money if facing a positive direction.

INGREDIENTWATCH Written by Lissie Lyles

Can you guess the difference between the two canned products?

Product #1 Ingredients: Chicken Broth (Contains flavor), Potatoes, Carrots, Chicken Fat, Peas, Modified Food Starch, Autolyzed Yeast, Natural Flavoring, Vegetable Starch, Hydrolyzed Corn Protein, Nonfat Dry Milk, Sugar, Salt, Spice.

Of course there are some obvious differences as #2’s ingredient list is much longer, and contains many nutritional supplements. #1’s ingredients list has several items that could be classified as vague. For example, “Modified Food Starch,” does not reveal the source of the “food.” “Natural Flavoring,” “Vegetable Starch” and “Spice” also leave us wondering what the true origin of these ingredients might be. Have you guessed the difference yet?

Product #2 Ingredients: Chicken, Turkey, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Chicken Meal, Turkey Liver, Dried Ground Potatoes, Natural Chicken Flavor, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, cranberries, ground flaxseed, salmon oil, taurine, dried kelp, Yucca Schidigera extract, chicory root extract, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, vitamin E supplement, choline chloride, cobalt proteniate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin d-3 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride (B6), riboflavin supplement, vitamin A supplement, vitamin b-12 supplement, potassium iodide, biotin.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Product #2 contains more chicken meat (and turkey) than product #1, which contains no chicken meat at all, just fat and broth (and flavor). Why might this be strange? Well, we may as well spoil the surprise for you: Product #1 is Dinty Moore Chicken Stew, and product #2 is Wellness Brand Wet Cat food. That’s right, canned

34

March 2011

chicken cat food, contains more chicken than a can of chicken stew designated for human consumption. Not only that, but the cat food contains no added salt, while the chicken stew packs in a whopping 1020 mg of Sodium per serving! That’s 2040mg per can! This could in part be attributed to the natural flavorings, and spice, which are really just cover up words for MSG. Autolyzed Yeast is also the source from which MSG is derived.

cat food contains more real food, less harmful ingredients, and more beneficial nutrients than the chicken stew, making it the healthier food choice. Even so, because the Dinty Moore is designated as “human food,” were we given the choice between the two cans, the more socially acceptable meal choice would certainly be the canned chicken stew, unless of course, you are a cat. HB References:

The chicken stew provides about 12 grams of protein, and aside from some vitamins A and C, and small amounts of Calcium and Iron, offers little in the way of vitamins and minerals. The cat food on the other hand, contains Omega3 fatty acids, B-vitamins, Vitamins, D, E, A and C, Magnesium, Folic Acid, Iodine, Copper, just to name a few. Dinty Moore stew? It does not contain any of those supplements. While some of the cat food ingredients may sound complicated, like Manganese Proteinate, they are really just mineral proteinates, resulting from the chelation of minerals with amino acids and proteins. This chelation process makes the minerals more bio-available and safe for human and animal consumption. The cat food contains plenty of whole meats, fruits and vegetables. The Chicken stew contains some vegetables, but it also contains sugar, and dry milk powder (which has been shown to have high heavy-metal content). None of the cat food ingredients have a vague source, or are considered to be harmful.

ASTROLOGYHEALTH

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK

vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | March - 2011

M

arch. The Sun is now in Pisces for the next few weeks, and Chiron is in Pisces for the next eight years. Chiron in Pisces defines an era of astrology where many will come to terms with the idea, and the reality, of emotional healing. Most of the problems faced by individuals and, when you add that up, by our whole society, come back to unresolved emotional issues. Whether you’re talking about obesity or violence, cancer or depression, the struggles so many people face in their relationships, or the crisis children are in, the common thread is a need for emotional wellbeing and maturity. When you consider this theme in the context of your own life, what do you come up with? What do you think is holding you back? If there are issues lurking in the past, they’re not as entrenched as they once were, and not as scary as you once thought. But you’ll need to get underneath the feeling of resistance and find what is there. Aries (March 20-April 19) Honesty is imperative right now, and so too is managing your emotions. I suggest you ban expressing anger until you’ve cooled off, written in your diary and/ or had a session with your therapist. While I am reluctant to ever suggest you not trust your perceptions, this is an extended moment when you have to check them several times from a diversity of viewpoints. You’re living in an entirely new psychic environment than you were just a few weeks ago, one calling on you to be unusually introspective. In practical terms, that means considering for weeks what you might have thought about for an hour; and it means looking for documentation of the basis of your opinions rather than acting on impulse. Taurus (April 19-May 20) Get to know your inhibitions, so you can address them. I don’t suggest fretting over them, getting caught in them, but emphasizing how much fun you can have if you let them go. You’ve done enough work on this project to appreciate the benefits of having made some space for yourself. You’ve experienced enough in the way of direct, actual, authentic pleasure, to motivate you to go the rest of the way. At a certain point you’ll figure out that you’re working through the inhibitions of your ancestors. You’re unlikely at this point to notice that because you’re aware of how much else you have to do. If you focus on what you’ve accomplished, you’ll see that at least half of what you’ve done is throw away or give back issues that were not yours. Gemini (May 20-June 21) You’re embarking on a phase of your life wherein your career goes to the top of the agenda. By this, I mean focus. I mean quitting your bartending job if you’re really an artist, and focusing on acting. I mean that if you’re a songwriter and working as a bicycle messenger, you do something like teach guitar so you have the instrument in your hand more hours a day. I also mean understanding why you must distinguish Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

yourself from people who have less desire to succeed than you do. You have one agenda and they have another, and your sensitivity to their thoughts and feelings will influence your success. You are becoming an influential person, and I suggest you spend your time with people who are creative, optimistic and authentic. Cancer (June 21-July 22) It sure seems like time for an adventure. Can you get yourself to an ancient site of some kind? You would be surprised how many of those are within a few hours’ drive of home--such as old features in the land, an old monastery or a temple of some kind. I suggest you travel about 100 miles--not so far that you mix up your schedule or incur too much expense, but far enough to be an overnight mission. I suggest you go on your own; the purpose is introspection, to bring you into deeper contact with your movement through life and your relationship to existence. The presence of anyone else will distract you from contacting the silence in your own mind-which is becoming a few shades more beautiful as the days go by. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) You now have some clarity on what may have felt like a betrayal or being deceived in some way. You’re not the type to hold onto things, but your trust can be injured; I suggest you stretch right back into your usual flexibility. Your commitments and the loyalty of others to you goes to an unusual depth for this world, and this is one of your main sources of nourishment. One gift you have is being able to see people for who they are inside, and love them despite the ways they may not love themselves. This is a profound influence on the world around you, and the gifts you give so generously will come back to you if you’re open to receiving them. Focus on that openness and raise everyone’s vibration. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Your relationship life has had an odd feeling in recent years, 36

March 2011

as if there was nothing you could depend on. Therefore you had to depend on yourself. It’s not that there weren’t interesting people. If anything they were a little too interesting for you. But if they pushed certain buttons, they also taught you to stretch your boundaries and not be so rigid in your perceptions of yourself and of others. Now, you’re ready for a new kind of relationship. I would caution you from embarking on a search for ‘the one’ but rather viewing each person who enters your life on equal terms, at least initially. People you encounter are likely to have something particular in common with you--and help you stretch into yourself in new ways. You may find that it’s the same conversation you’ve been having, but in a new language.

you to trust yourself a little more every day. There’s a reason you have an unusual perception of your own intelligence, which is that you have an unusual kind of intelligence. You tend to proceed from the intuitive to the logical rather than the other way around. Instead of playing a game of secondguess, start with your initial perception and verify it. You will usually be right, and learn a lot more in the process of factchecking and documentation. But as for how you got there in the first place--well that’s a mystery between you and the universe. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) When you open your mouth to speak, what percentage of what you say is actually true? I suggest you monitor this. I’m not saying you need to get down on yourself if you catch yourself in white or black lies, but rather, do a kind of information audit; Fact-check yourself. The thing I suggest you look for is the extent to which what you say is in accordance with your values. That is the real measure of truth. One process that’s about to accelerate in your life is the systematic discovery of what your values are. On the one hand you can be extremely idealistic, and on the other just as cynical about human nature. When you start to parse out that contradiction you will find many shades of faith, fear and knowledge that will inform you of your true perception of existence. For a while you will have more questions than answers.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) You seem to be taking risks exploring the dialog between the “sexual” and “non-sexual” aspects of yourself. I used quotes mainly because these are aspects of the same thing, a fact you may be discovering. Sexuality implies much more than itself for you and, at the moment, is deeply connected to your ideas of what it means to have a home. When the “nonsexual” side speaks, though, it can imply deeply erotic attributes of your nature, which are sometimes best seen when you filter out overtly erotic feelings. This may all seem like a paradox, though what your astrology implies to me is that you are opening doors to different rooms of your consciousness, and boldly exploring what is there. Each has a feeling all its own. Each reveals something about you.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be filled with the sensation that you’re finally discovering who you are; that your self-perception is coming into focus. At the same time, I trust that you’re feeling less of a certain kind of pressure that may have had you feeling like your life was an exercise in holding your breath under water, wondering if you could breathe the stuff if you had to. Now, you can just simply breathe, and I suggest you do plenty of it. You can also focus on the processes that have, in the past year, taken hold of your desire to be healthier and more emotionally balanced. You learned a lot from being in a position where anything could happen at any time, and living a life where there were no guarantees. Anything can still happen and there are still no guarantees, but you’re in a lot better position to create solutions and explore your opportunities. HB

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) We have all heard the term ‘sexual healing’ but few people would know where to go looking for it. The first place to go is within yourself, beginning with awareness. Given the repressive nature of society, any conscious exploration into one’s erotic nature qualifies as both a reclaiming and as an experience of healing. One attribute of your current charts speaks of a new kind of interplay between ideas and experience. If the two have been markedly different in the past, such as if your true desire nature has not quite been matched in your experience, now is the time to begin building a bridge. Let your ideas influence your choices, and let your experiences influence your ideas. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Art is a practical matter, and it’s one of the easiest ways to dial into your growth process right now. I am aware that you may be sitting in an office reading this, with no concept of yourself as a “creative person.” I’m speaking to you, not to Picasso. What we think of as the ‘creative self’ is often an attribute of our inner child that we’ve abandoned. When you explore any creative process, no matter how simple or humble your efforts, you begin to awaken this child. Pretty soon, this child is going to come to life with raging passion. I suggest you make some quiet visits into his or her room, and make the awakening gentle. I suggest purple eggs, lemonade and animal crackers for breakfast, with a side of Play Doh.

THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. Eric Francis Coppolino, founder and editor of Planet Waves, is a professional astrologer and journalist. A pioneer in the field of new planet discoveries, he has worked with clients and written about astrology for wide audiences since 1995. Read Eric Francis daily at PlanetWaves.net.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) You are smarter than you think. You make better decisions than you think, even when you’re under stress. I suggest you make a yoga of trusting that. Practice trusting yourself, your perceptions, and your experiences. This will gradually lead March 2011

always get ready for spring in the month of March! We start seeing signs of the coming season throughout the month and “Spring Fever” hits my school, or so my teachers say! I am guessing the drama and arguing might happen even more because of it, but hey, its seventh grade! There will be fights, best friends parting ways and “she is going out with him?” But, I have a set of rules I follow, and I am going to share them with you: how to survive the seventh grade in spring time! Rule #1: Never talk or get caught up in gossip or drama, I know it is very hard not to, but trust me karma is not pretty! Rule #2: Try to hang out with different groups of people and try making new friends. No matter how many friends you have, it’s always nice to have a lot of different people you can hang out with. Rule #3: Never ever, ever, ever, ever talk bad about people, even if it was some silly little thing and you didn’t even mean it in a bad way. People can twist your words and start rumors and drama, and well, that little tiny thing you decided to say to your friend has now started a cat fight! Rule #4: Stay clear of any fights that your friends might be in, even though they are your friends and you want to help them. If the fight/argument gets bigger, teachers will get involved and trust me, you do not want to be caught up in that mess! If the drama involves violence or something else really serious, and you have information that could really help someone, you should tell your teacher, school counselor, principal or your mom or dad! If you use these rules, I assure you will have a great spring! Have some shirts, shorts, pants, etc. that still fit, but they’re looking kind of boring? Here’s a way to re-use and go green, with your wardrobe! Of course, ask your mom and dad first. Tie Die Clothing You will need the following: 1. A plain white T-shirt or article of clothing you are dyeing 2. Fabric Die (available in craft stores, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.) 3. A large pot 4. A large spoon 5. Tongs 6. Rubber bands Instructions: Take the article of clothing and bunch it up; put multiple rubber bands around it. While doing this, you can boil water on the stove. Once the water is hot, pour the die into the water. Put your article of clothing into the pot and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, take it out (with the tongs) and let sit for 5-10 minutes; and then run it under cool water until the excess die runs out. You might also want to rinse the tongs and spoon under the cool water as well. Let your article of clothing dry and then it is ready for use! Enjoy, and have a wonderful month of March! THE HEALTHY ADVENTURER

Kayaking through Siberia, Part 3 I needed help and I needed it badly, for not only was my bike wobbling heavily, I was in danger of more spokes breaking and the whole wheel collapsing. Help came in the form of Vladimir. I met him through an American couple, whose address I received in this city. He showed up in a car and promptly took me to a bike repair shop where my problem was resolved in short order. Vladimir and I exchanged addresses and stayed in contact. Over time, I learned that he was a champion triathlon athlete, taking part in competitions all over the world. He advanced to become the director of sports events for the government of the city of Krasnoyarsk. I need a government-approved invitation to acquire a visa to visit Russia. Instead of inviting me personally, Vladimir managed to have the city government be my host. This facilitated the visa issue from a Russian consulate greatly. My hotel in Krasnoyarsk was only a stone’s throw away from the Yenisei River, my path to the arctic. The VIP treatment continued in the morning. Vladimir and his chauffeur took me the modern-day counterpart of the KGB. Certain areas up in northern Siberia were off-limits to foreigners. A special permit was issued there for me. It was also a great form of protection for me to travel with the official blessing of this powerful organization. With curiosity, I encountered the men and women who were so often featured as evil in spy movies. Alas, they looked like everyone else, just acted a bit more stern and official. The group I encountered next was less somber and considerably more talkative: Media folks. Vladimir had arranged for several television crews to meet us outside the “KGB” building… HB With joyful passion for peace and health, Hans, The Healthy Adventurer.

Spring Liver Purge

Written By Shelby Molchan

P

icture spring: rebirth, greenery, abundance and blossoms. It is a time for renewal. In Chinese Medicine, spring is yang and is associated with the liver and gallbladder. Cleansing your liver in the spring can help you cast off the heavy feelings of winter that may be lingering, and can help energize you to embrace the new world that is emerging around you. Spring is also associated with the wood element in Chinese Medicine, symbolizing the need for our bodies to be flexible and strong. Anger is a yang emotion, associated with spring and the liver. Fear is a yin emotion and is associated with winter (a yin season), and has constricting qualities. Spurred by fear that is emotionally accumulated through winter, anger may bubble to the surface in the spring more easily than at other times, just as sap rises in trees. Since winter is also a time of overindulgence in heavy and fatty foods it is easy to see how a bogged down liver can stifle the exuberance of spring, manifesting as resentment, rudeness, frustration, and edginess. It is very difficult to feel strong and flexible with an overworked liver, so as winter yields to spring, it is an excellent time to focus on the health of the liver.

The purge involves mixing a concoction of Magnesium Sulfate, organic unfiltered apple juice and black walnut hull tincture and drinking it at designated intervals, and also drinking a one time mixture of organic pink grapefruit juice and olive oil. Consult the internet, or the books listed as references for this article; they will provide more information on this subject. There are a number of variations on the recipe out there, so consulting with someone who is familiar with liver purges is helpful in deciding which purge would be right for you. Prior to and following the liver/gallbladder purge, you may want to fortify the liver by using wheatgrass juice to help cleanse and build the blood. There are also many wonderful herbs and teas that support liver and gallbladder function such as Milk Thistle, Dandelion Root, Fennel Seed and Garlic Bulb. Coffee colonics and coffee enemas stimulate the liver and gallbladder and can aid in the detoxification process. Certain yoga poses also squeeze the liver and other internal organs, which can have a stimulating effect.

On top of cleansing yourself of a heavy winter, a liver cleanse enhances weight loss, and helps improve feelings of indecisiveness or of being “stuck.” Cleansing the liver and gallbladder can also help improve stress, PMS, allergies and constipation. People who do liver cleanses report reduced digestive disturbances, improved weight loss, improved mental clarity and virility and love of life.

As the world turns from the darkness of winter to the brightness of spring, a focus of positive energy can be brought about by cleansing the liver and gallbladder, and may awaken new and wonderful potential that is abundantly blossoming all around. HB

Often disregarded in relation to digestive issues, the gallbladder is responsible for storing and secreting bile, which is made by the liver. The gallbladder should release the right amount of bile, in the right concentrations, at the right time, in order to maintain proper digestion. Irregular bile flow can result in a build up of bile salts in the blood. This affects cholesterol, metabolism and disrupts the normal elimination of metabolic wastes. An actual liver/gallbladder purge (or flush) is the best way to rid the liver of residual toxins that can range from medications, chemicals you’ve been exposed to, and the buildup of fatty and processed foods, and free the gallbladder accumulated March 2011

stones. A certified Colon Hydrotherapist, who is experienced in guiding people through this process, can offer tips on how to perform the purge safely and effectively. It is recommended to receive a minimum of one colonic following the purge to wash out any toxins and stones that may still be lingering in the bowel; and preferably one or more before the purge to help rid the colon of accumulated fecal matter and prepare the body for the purge.

better job performance. Vitamin C protects your nervous system. The nervous system includes your brain, eyes and all the nerves running throughout your body that tell your heart when to contract, your lungs when to breathe, and your muscles when to flex-it’s the electronic system of your body. If you do not have a fully functional nervous system, you may experience symptoms like depression. You may lose the ability to focus sharply. You may experience a foggy brain, learn slowly, feel sluggish or forget things easily. Eventually a person with a compromised nervous system may end up with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is associated with the buildup of plaque on brain nerves and recent research shows that this plaque is reversible through vitamin C nutrition and brain exercise. Yes, using your brain and playing concentration or number games like Sudoku can help you age well, and when accompanied with good nutritional support, high in vitamin C, you gain even more clarity and long term mindfulness. Mike Adams, founder of www.naturalnews.com, states that “If you’re interested in anti-aging, or if you’re getting up in years and you want to make sure you have optimal brain performance for the rest of your life, the Camu berry is one of the most important nutritional supplements you can consume. Think of it as an insurance policy against neurodegenerative diseases.” There’s not food on the planet with a higher concentration of vitamin C than the Camu berry. Oranges are generally known for their high vitamin C content. However, oranges often only have around 1,000 ppm of vitamin C. Sometimes they can have as high as 3,000 or 4,000 but that’s unusual, especially given the way they are commercially grown today. The Camu berry can have concentrations as high as 50,000 ppm, or about 2 g of vitamin C per 100 g of fruit. That means that the Camu berry provides 50 times more vitamin C than an orange (on an ounce-for-ounce basis.)* A major cause of depression is a suppressed or poorly functioning nervous system and Dr. Gary Null ranks the Amazonian fruit known as Camu as the number two source for anti-depressant properties because of its rich array of chemical compounds that protect and nourish the

nervous system. According to Dr. James Duke, botanist and herbal authority, the Camu berry provides nutritional support for the brain to optimize its own mood-balancing chemistry. Camu is one of his favorite Rainforest botanicals. The Camu-Camu berry, also known as the “feel good fruit” is available in various sources from power to juice and concentrates. When purchasing, check your source and make sure there are no additives or fillers. More Research and Facts on Vitamin C and a Healthy Brain: • A high vitamin C intake may protect against both cognitive impairment and cerebrovascular disease. • Long-term, current users of vitamin E with vitamin C had significantly better mean performance, as judged by a global score that combined individual test scores, than did women who had never used vitamin E or C. • These results suggest that vitamin E and C supplements may protect against vascular dementia and may improve cognitive function in late life. Taking a holistic approach to mental health Written By Leslie Katz LCSW

Hows Your Mental Health?

P

“Mental Health Affects Life Success”

hysical and mental health work together, which helps provide us with a feeling of well-being. Many of us think that feeling depressed or anxious is a matter of mental health. We react to these feelings of depression and anxiety by going to the doctor for a prescription that will “fix” our feelings. Appropriately used, medication can help you feel better. Yet, a holistic approach to your life and body also nurtures your mind. Some of the simplest things like enough sleep, enough water, good nutrition and exercise can be essential to your well-being and sense of good mental health, especially during difficult times. For example, doing an hour of yoga or meditation every day will go a long way in assuring a peaceful attitude. Good nutrition and adequate sleep, which we have access to each day, are greatly needed to support our physical and mental health. Many approaches that were considered avant-garde 20 years ago are now accepted as proven techniques to a healthier physical and mental life. Acupuncture, Massage, Biofeedback and Emotionally Focused therapy are proven methods to relieve stress. Psychotherapy is often looked at as a sign of weakness. However, it is a key treatment method, combined with the use of medication, to assure long term mental health. Psychotherapy is also proven to provide help with persistent physical pain. A wellqualified psychotherapist can help a person of any age make a long term positive change in their life. Taking care of you has many connotations. Holistically speaking, it means living a quality of life that meets your potential. Healthy habits such as consistent sleep practice, good nutrition and regular exercise are an important start. Techniques such as Massage, Acupuncture, Biofeedback and Emotionally Focused therapy are also areas to consider with mental or physical pain; a good therapist can be a key element in your quest for overall health. S

pring cleaning is a concept that brings with it a ton of good intentions which in short order can weigh down even the most sincere planner with a sense of overwhelm. The intention to clean up and get organized is one of the most popular items for the personal and professional to-do list – and one that can easily lead to failure, simply because many people don’t know how to begin. Don’t be discouraged,

fellow well-intentioned organizers: follow the steps below to help you succeed through the process of de-cluttering, cleaning up and organizing your life. Organizing and cleaning is the forte of few; if it’s not yours, you still can do it yourself -- and you may find it’s not as hard as you thought. Keep in mind a picture of your desired end result and how great it will it feel and look. This image will help you push through to accomplish the goals you set. Below are the essential steps to help you achieve your decluttering and organizing goals: Plan to eliminate the clutter. You likely will have more than one area that needs attention, so create a plan in writing. On a sheet of paper, write 1-5 in a column, leaving several spaces between each row. Next to number one, enter the area/room which is your highest priority to clean out and organize, with number two next in importance and so on. Now go back and break each room or area into smaller chunks – and be specific.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.

Gather the supplies you will need. Assemble a few large boxes or plastic bags. Label one box/bag “Donate,” one “Keep” and the third “Trash.” Now begin the purging and de-cluttering process. Don’t be afraid to let go of items that you haven’t used in ages, or that are broken or expired. -moreIf an item isn’t something that you can say you love AND use, it should be donated or sold if it’s in good condition or trashed if it’s broken and would be more expensive to repair than replace. Some items have sentimental value to us. Do you need to hang on to that item for the memory it brings back to you? If you were to dispose of the item, would you still have the memory? If you are having a hard time parting with an item, keep it, but instead of putting family heirlooms in a box in the garage to gather dust and be forgotten, think of ways you can use or display the items so you may enjoy them now. It’s important to keep your projects small and manageable. Schedule only a few hours at a time for each, or you may become overwhelmed and discouraged and never complete your list of goals. Small achievements for which you can see results are essential to keep motivated. This problem didn’t happen overnight, and you don’t have to fix it overnight. Be realistic about the amount of time you have available to work. Even if all you have is 15 minutes, you still can work on a project and eliminate some clutter. Your effort brings you that much closer to your goals of being decluttered and organized. At the end of each session, take the bags/boxes away. Dispose of trash, and take the bags/boxes of donation items 42

stay organized forever. We have so much going on in our lives that we sometimes get off-track in spite of our best efforts. You have the steps to go through the process of de-cluttering and organizing. Just take it step by step, and before you know it, you’ll be clutterfree and happily organized. For more tips on getting and staying organized, please visit www.chaosreno.com. HB ***** Debbie Cox is founder and owner of CHAOS, Creative Home and Office Solutions, a northern Nevada-based professional organizing service.

Don’t rush out to buy containers before you begin de-cluttering. Wait until you know exactly what you will be keeping and the quantity and size of containers you will need – if any. You may find that you have no need for new containers because you have done such a great job of decluttering. Your current storage may be perfectly adequate to organize what you have kept. Now start your organizing plan. Take the items in your “Keep box/bag and sort them by room. Store things where you use them. For example, keep scissors, tape, pens and small paper pads in several rooms, not just in the office. The best system for staying organized is the one that works for you and that you actually use. Make it user friendly, and you’re much more likely to continue to stay organized.

exuality education is basic health care, because irresponsible sexual behavior can lead to disease, unplanned pregnancy (creating health risks for teens and the children of teens who give birth) and even cancer. The majority of adults believe our children and our teens agree they need information on abstinence AND contraception. The difference is what kind of sex education programs our youth have access to. Planned Parenthood is advocating for comprehensive sex education standards to reduce Nevada’s second highest teen pregnancy ranking, with program content covering age-appropriate and medically accurate information about the whole of sexuality, from human development to relationship negotiations; from responsible behavior and decision-making to options and consequences related to those behaviors. Comprehensive sex education delays teen sexual activity, improves rates of contraceptive methods when they do become sexually active and reduces unplanned pregnancy. Across the state, Nevada provides all three different approaches to sexuality education: abstinence-only-until-marriage, abstinence-based and comprehensive sex education. Abstinenceonly programs emphasize no sex outside of marriage, with limited discussion of contraception or disease prevention; it is typically only in terms of often inaccurate or misleading failure rates. Abstinence-based programs detail the value of abstinence and delaying sexual activity, but also provide information about sexual behavior other than intercourse, contraception and prevention methods. Comprehensive sex education goes even further from the spectrum of abstinence to sexually responsible behavior. According to the national Campaign’s 2001 report, Emerging Answers: Research Findings on Programs to Reduce Teen Pregnancy, author Douglas Kirby noted that most successful curricula-based programs have ten characteristics in common.

March 2011

1. Tools to set behavioral goals 2. Realistic hypothetical situations 3. Messages clearly define sexual activity and all contraceptive methods 4. Describe risks from early sexual activity for prevention of pregnancy and disease 5. Skills to handle social pressures 6. Role play communication and refusal skills 7. Recognize different learning and address individual needs 8. Address diversity of age, culture, and level of sexual experience 9. Sufficient time per grade to address the education 10. Trained teachers or peer educators SOURCE: (KIRBY, 2001) The difference in education between abstinence-only and comprehensive sex education could drastically reduce the teen pregnancy in Nevada and the subsequent health issues. Chiron Files

Mental, Emotional, Physical or Spiritual?

sion) and Pisces (the emotional and sometimes the spiritual dimension) have been morphing into one sign.

Written By Eric Francis

S

omeone once explained to me that the distinction between jazz and blues had more to do with sorting things out in the record store than it did with meaningful differences in the music. To hear the terms, one would get the mistaken idea that they are entirely unrelated things. In fact, they are entirely related, most notably by being music. That’s how it often is with categories of any kind, and that’s how it is with some we use often--mental, emotional and physical. We could add “spiritual” to that list, too. The thing about categories is that they do as much excluding as they do including. If you say “mental,” then you’re implying that whatever you’re talking about has nothing to do with the body. If you say “physical,” you imply just physical. If you say “spiritual,” you imply everything else is “unspiritual.” Often time, categories have no relationship to what they supposedly describe. White people are not really white and black people are not black. We refer to black, white and Latino but Latino is not a color. When we say “mental” we might mean emotional or spiritual. Usually both have plenty in common with one’s physical reality. The charts for spring 2011 are full of illustrations of the crossovers between these seemingly separate realities. One example is how Aquarius (the mental dimen-

Neptune (a planet associated with Pisces) has been in Aquarius for more than 12 years, and it’s about to cross back and forth over the line, between the two signs, three times between now and early 2012. This draws a connection between the mental, the spiritual and the emotional. The idea is that they are different expressions of the same thing. Take a few chords from blues, lighten up the riff, and you’ve got jazz. Meanwhile, Uranus, a planet associated with Aquarius, has been crossing back and forth between Pisces and Aries for the past year, morphing those two signs and carrying over energy from Aquarius. Aries is hot blooded and passionate, but it’s also about physical strength and stamina. Uranus adds the dimension of mental innovation and invention. When the Sun crosses over the Aries equinox point, in a couple of weeks, it will make a conjunction to Uranus. Meanwhile Jupiter, the traditional ruling planet of Pisces, is in Aries, carrying some of that energy over to its neighbor as well. In effect, Aquarius, Pisces and Aries are currently acting like one sign. There’s something going on here--personality integration. Except for the fact that personality is a category and we really don’t know what it means. Is it part of the soul? Some say no. I say that it is an aspect of a person. What we think of as the mind (Aquarius, Uranus) is getting expressed through the body (Aries, Sun) and mixed with the soul (Pisces, Jupiter, Neptune) and also with what we sometimes think of as the feeling body or astral body.

creasing access to all the dimensions of who we are--if we want to access those inner experiences. This column is called the Chiron Files, and it’s worth taking a close look at the particular influence of that planet on its new home, Pisces. Chiron is the original astrological factor that blurs the boundaries. Buzzing around between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, Chiron is usually associated with the signs Virgo and Sagittarius. So, there are a lot of different qualities bundled up into one thing that is a little like an asteroid and a little more like a comet. Chiron is like an un-kaleidoscope that, instead of fracturing an image into things that make no sense, it reassembles things that make no sense into something that is perfectly understandable. To me, Chiron in Pisces has a few basic messages. One is that everything exists on a continuum. There are not so many hard and fast boundaries and rules, but it’s good to know where you are on the spectrum at any given time, so you can respond appropriately. Another message of Chiron in Pisces is that existence is holographic. Everything we experience is a sample of everything else. Perception is based on seeing differences, and those are in turn based on the differences we already have within our minds. Chiron is not only saying that we can see the world as whole, but also that as we see ourselves as whole, we will begin to see the world that way. HB Eric Francis is the author of the Planet Waves column, available by subscription at PlanetWaves.net.

Do these categories mean anything? They mean a lot less than the statement that as the astrology of the spring and indeed the next few years develop, we will have in-

HOW TO PREPARE: 1. 2. 3.

1. Place the beans, garlic, tofu, tahini, cumin, oil, and lime juice in a food processor. Whirl until the mixture is smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Refrigerate for a couple hours or overnight. Serve with tortilla chips.

Additional Notes:

2. Serve in a bowl, garnished with a sprinkle of paprika. Black Bean Hummus will keep for 4 to 5 days, tightly covered in the refrigerator.

• This is a mild dip. It has good flavor, but isn’t spicy. If you prefer something with a little more kick, add one or two finely chopped jalapeños. • This is also great served as a pico de gallo. Consider adding it to tacos, salads, or fajitas. Or, as I did here, on top of Cilantro Rice, slow-cooked Mexican Chicken, and shredded cheddar.
