grew up in a family with a mom and a dad. My mother prepared home cooked meals. We played outside from sun up to sun down and we were allowed to take our bicycles on incredible journeys to places called Pondy Pondy and Dinosaur Hill. We would pack a lunch and off we would go on our 20 mile bike trip, without a cell phone. This was pretty much the norm in rural and medium-sized cities from the 30s up through the mid-80s. We were active kids; we rarely watched television because it was more exciting to play out dreams as adventurers, building forts and such. Most people I knew were healthy and we rarely heard about cancer, diabetes, arthritis, obesity and so forth.

Now, we are bombarded with health messages. Health, Healthy, Fit and Fitness; theses words are bantered about and used as adjectives to describe positive outcomes. For example, Healthy Relationships, Healthy Experiences, Healthy Business, Healthy Lawn, Healthy Body, Healthy Mind, Fit Body, Fit Mind, etc. Marketing companies love to use it in their advertising campaigns, it is nothing new. Advertising and educational articles have been the craze for hundreds of years, and yet with all this knowledge swirling about, the United States became one of the sickest and fattest nations in the world.
A
Healthy Beginnings is printed on recycled newsprint with soy-based ink since August 2006
Our theme for the month of September is beauty and fashion. Although some of our articles might take the literal route, with clothing and make-up as their focus, our cover displays the beauty of the natural world around us.
What happened to us in the US? Many say it had to do with the breakdown of the traditional family. Now, the norm seems to be blended families, or families raised by single parents. Families rely more on technology to talk to one another rather than communicating the old fashioned way of talking and learning from more experienced family members. People tend to rely on hearsay rather than facts.
The trees, rocks and running water offer a serene landscape. After viewing the image, you can almost feel the peace sweeping over you.
Young people, from the ages of five into their 40s, seem to know-it-all because they learned it from an un-vetted source. Youth is worshipped and praised in the media and the elderly are looked upon as outdated “know-nothings.”
When one calms the heart, soul and mind, the body becomes more apt to heal and grow.
One might suggest that natural beauty radiates into our own being, creating tranquility within, which translates to a physically soothing effect on our bodies.
With that, we all tend to reflect our inner feelings outwardly, in a physical way. So, if we are in a state of quiet bliss, we most definitely emit that energy. Thus, a more beautiful way of being pursues, and the circle of life is in action once again.
Thanks to Hollywood, television, technology and the ever knowing Oz of social media, the urge to think for oneself is no longer in vogue. Following the crowd seems to be the mantra and message of technology, pharmaceutical advertising and social propaganda. In my opinion, we have not evolved. Instead, we have become the elite slaves of the almighty government and their corporate allies.
Enjoy the coming month...and remember that what you take in, in all forms, can affect your beautiful being, inward and out.

My grandchildren and I recently took an 1800 mile road trip cross-country, and at each stop, we encountered a common denominator among the general population. Regardless of their race, gender or outward appearance, they were seemingly unhealthy and overweight, with a cell phone proverbially glued to their hand.

ith a warm smile, Dr. Patricia Yost is immediately comfortable to be around and easy to talk to. An experienced and board certified gynecologic surgeon at GYN Specialists of Reno, Dr. Yost offers comprehensive preventive and problem-based medical treatment, surgery, and medically supervised weight loss. Patients are impressed by Dr. Yost’s friendly manner and thorough attention to detail.
certain exams or screening tests. Regarding recent controversy surrounding extending the intervals between pap smears and mammograms, and even upper age limits for screenings, Dr. Yost is concerned that a one size fits all approach may prevent women from coming in for routine annual breast and pelvic exams and other health guidance. She feels a woman’s gynecologist is often her best advisor regarding decisions about these screening tests, taking her physical exam, individual and family histories, and patient concern into account. She also notes that, as a woman ages, there are conditions that a gynecologist can and should diagnose and treat before they become severe, such as vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and precancer or dermatologic diseases of the vulva.
Many patients suffer with pelvic pain, irregular or heavy periods, a bulky fibroid uterus, ovarian cysts, pelvic support issues, hormone imbalances, vaginal dryness or irritation, menopausal symptoms, or simply have been absent from routine checkups for a number of years. Dr. Yost understands it can be intimidating to visit a gynecologist and makes it a priority to validate these concerns. Since she is willing to listen, she is better able to help women navigate changes in reproductive health from adolescence through menopause and beyond.
Dr. Yost believes her specialty is uniquely qualified to routinely evaluate women for these and other important issues. She strives to support her patients’ active lifestyles and help them maintain healthy physical, psychological, and sexual function for as long as possible.
Dr. Yost recommends a young woman’s initial visit (not a pelvic exam) occur around the age of fourteen in order to establish a trusting relationship with a reproductive health physician, an ongoing resource for accurate information. She finds it a good opportunity to allay fears regarding normal physical and emotional development and menstrual cycles, debunk any myths, and provide education about healthy behaviors and personal safety. As a mother of three (ages 25, 14 and 11) Dr. Yost relates well to her teen patients and quickly puts them at ease.
Dr. Yost offers conservative nonsurgical therapies and minimally invasive procedures according to individual patient’s needs and desires. She is skilled in laparoscopy, endometrial ablation, tubal sterilization, hysteroscopy, and placement of intrauterine devices. She frequently performs in-office pelvic ultrasounds and finds patients appreciate having immediate results interpreted to them.
Because many women are physiologically and functionally younger than others at the same chronological age, Dr. Yost’s practice philosophy is that there should be no firm age cutoffs for

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

Pet Adoptions Urgently Needed at Nevada Humane Society
Order by September 28th, 2014. Pick up your order on October 4th, 2014 between the hours of 9AM to 3PM. Because they are time-sensitive, we cannot offer refunds, sorry.
Nevada Humane Society is in need of community support--in the form of pet adoptions. At this time, adoption numbers are down and intake of animals is up, which creates space limitations within the shelter. While Nevada Humane Society does not euthanize animals for time or space, Washoe County Regional Animal Services is not able to hold animals for prolonged periods of time.
For more info and to order online, contact St. Paul’s UMC, 1660 Grandview Ave., Reno at stpaulsumcreno.org, or call (775) 5447871.
“We can’t necessarily explain why adoption numbers are low—it may be that kids are headed back to school, families are soaking up the last days of vacation, or maybe they just haven’t thought about adding to their family this summer. Either way, we are strongly encouraging people if they are able to open their hearts and homes to a new pet, to please visit the shelter this weekend,” said Kimberly Wade, Senior Manager of Communications and Events. “These animals deserve a second chance but that truly only happens through pet adoptions. Our staff and volunteers provide care, enrichment and hours of TLC but what we really want to be able to do is to find a home for every animal in the shelter.”
Non-Toxic Hair Color When Kim Hotchkiss at MidTown Hair noticed that products containing ammonia caused troubling side effects in clients, she knew it was time to find healthier alternatives. After much research, she found a European line of oil-based colors that are healthy for pregnant women, those who have allergies, cancer or anyone concerned about the toxic load created when the body is exposed to chemicals.
The most urgent adoption need is for adult dogs. At this time, there are upwards of 200 dogs at Nevada Humane Society while there are nearly 300 cats. In order to truly make a difference for homeless pets and maintain Washoe County as one of the safest counties in the nation for homeless pets, Nevada Humane Society is urgently encouraging people to visit the shelter as soon as possible. Adoption fees vary from species, with most dogs available for just $50 and most cats $10 or less. All dogs or cats are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, services that would normally cost over $240.
Although using organic products is more time-consuming, it is safe for clients and the planet. In addition to being a colorist, Kim specializes in cutting and texturizing hair for men, women and children. Call Kim for more info, or to book your color appointment, at (775) 843-7659, or email her at kimcolorshair@gmail.com.

THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH
MY NECK, Right? (Part 2 of 2)
Written By Dr. Tony Jensen
I
Thyroid
n the first article (July issue of HB Mag), we covered the first three of seven problems that could be associated with neck problems. As review, here is the list: •
You have acute or chronic pain in the neck
•
Headaches
•
High Blood pressure
•
Thyroid problems
•
Arm and hand pain, tingling or numbness
•
Breathing problems
Most people don’t think neck problems would be associated with their thyroid problems. But, if you look at the thyroid gland, nerve intervention comes from parasympathetic input from the superior laryngeal nerve and the recurrent laryngeal nerve coming from the head and neck area. According to WebMD, “The thyroid secretes several hormones, collectively called thyroid hormones. The main hormone is thyroxine, also called T4. Thyroid hormones act throughout the body, influencing metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature.” Arm and hand pain, tingling and numbness When the nerves in the neck get pinched (subluxated) or damaged, you could have weakness, tingling, numbness, radiating pain, or total paralyses. Depending on the nerve or nerves involved, it can cause different symptoms. Here are a list of the cervical nerves and their functions:
• Your head is tilted even though you think you’re looking straight

• Nerve C1, also known as the suboccipital nerve, innervates the muscles at the base of the skull. This allows for movement of the head and neck.
See ad on this page.
• Nerves C2 and C3 allow for motor control of the neck. They also allow you to feel pain and touch in the neck area. These nerves form many of the nerves located in the neck, most notably the lesser occipital nerve, greater occipital nerve, greater auricular nerve, and lesser auricular nerve.
ARE YOU IN
PHYSICAL PAIN?
• Nerves C3, C4, and C5 form the phrenic nerve, which controls the movement of the diaphragm. This allows humans to breathe normally.
Is Stress causing your Pain? Have you been involved in an auto accident?
• Nerves C5, C6, C7, and C8 make up the brachial plexus, along with the first thoracic spinal nerve. The brachial plexus consists of tangled nerves that split and recombine to form the nerves in the upper back and arms. The C5 nerve root forms the dorsal scapular nerve, which allows for movement of the rhomboid muscles and levator scapulae. Spinal nerves C5, C6, and C7 form the long thoracic nerve.
TIGHT MUSCLES can pull your spine out of alignment!
Get relief from your pain with chiropractic treatment with someone who cares, is knowledgeable and experienced helping people achieve better health for over 20 years.
Breathing problems If you look at the information above, you will see that C3-C5 nerves make up the phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm. If there are any irritations or damage to these nerves, your breathing function could be affected. Your head is tilted even though you think you’re looking straight. If your head is tilted to one side, or if you have lost your normal cervical curve from front to back (lordotic curve), this will put abnormal pressure on the cervical spine. According to healthguideinfo.com, “Without this normal lordosis, most often the balance of the weight of the head is tilted forward and thus creates increased wear and tear on the intervertebral discs and the vertebral bodies. This eventually leads to bony spurs and osteophytes.” Such changes also lead to decreased mobility of the cervical spine and to cervical pain. This is similar to driving your car while it is out alignment, it will wear out your tires and cause more problems.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and its Full Implications Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B. already had PCOS for a long time. PCOS affects upwards of 15 to 20 percent of women. That’s a lot. And it should be diagnosed when a woman has elevated testosterone, abnormal menstrual cycles (20, 30, 45 day altering cycles) and cysts on the ovaries, or at least two of these three. PCOS should always be suspected and diagnostically investigated when a woman has these symptoms and any of the conditions listed in paragraph one. So how does this all fit together to affect you the reader? Well, for starters, too much PCOS related testosterone (and stress) throws off your menses. But, most of the time, you’re told you need to take estrogen in order to correct the hormone imbalance between testosterone and estrogen. How does testosterone get too high? There’s debate on this. Some say it’s the adrenal glands (too much stress) that cause the adrenals to produce too much DHEA--an adrenal hormone that can be converted into testosterone. Others say obesity may be a main player in the mechanism. People who are obese frequently develop insulin resistance (pre-diabetes, syndrome X, metabolic syndrome) causing a process called “aromatization” of a female’s estrogen into testosterone due to their elevated body mass. This is because the aromatization process occurs in the body’s adipose tissue (fat cells). When testosterone is high in a woman many things happen--all bad. Abnormal cycles, impossible to lose weight, unwanted facial hair, poor conversion of inactive thyroid hormone to active thyroid hormone (producing thyroid symptoms when your thyroid is actually normal), ovarian cysts and infertility.
A
Patient can’t lose weight--they have thyroid symptoms but their blood tests are normal. They’re on hormone replacement therapy for abnormal menstrual cycles, they’re pre-diabetic, and have cysts on their ovaries. But they’re not in the office for any of it. They’re in for “Fibro,” chronic fatigue, thyroid meds that don’t work for them, peripheral neuropathy, weight loss, and female pattern hair loss. Sounds like you have PCOS. The patient says, “Yeah, I’ve been told I have it but I was told it’s not a big deal.” Not a big deal?!? It’s causing or contributing to all of your problems in addition to being the number one cause (estimated to be involved 50% of the time) of infertility in this country! “Oh, nobody told me.”
Another cause of too much testosterone and the above resulting symptoms can also be a genetic abnormality when you produce too much DHEA from up regulation of an enzyme called 17, 20 lyase. This should be checked if a patient has PCOS and the above symptoms and doesn’t respond to stress reduction or weight loss. And lastly, the “gut” can cause increased testosterone. Genetically predisposed individuals (upwards of 2/3rds of the female population) can develop something called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (S.I.B.O.) which causes endotoxemia (toxic poisons in the small intestine). This is usually
So, a quick primer on PCOS--though some doctors (ok, a lot of doctors) won’t diagnose it unless you are over 300lbs and have grown a beard from too much testosterone. That patient has

Real Change Starts
on the Inside Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD
S
ometimes we make changes without making changes. We change our outer behavior or situation without changing our inner attitudes or perspective. There is a danger in this and that is we are likely to encounter the same problems and make the same mistakes over and over. Paradoxical as it may seem, the recurring patterns and issues in your life are often driven more by your unconscious beliefs and attitudes than by your conscious intentions. Carl grew up in a family with very critical parents and older siblings who picked on him. Never feeling very encouraged or loved, he entered adulthood with a lack of confidence and selfrespect. Other people would perceive these characteristics and tend to take advantage of him. Following a failed marriage and a job layoff, he decided he needed to do something about his tendency to let people “walk all over him.” He talked to a friend of his who was a life coach and she recommended that he start reciting daily affirmations to boost his self-esteem and improve the way he thought about himself. “If you change the way you think about yourself,” she explained, “people will start treating you differently.” Carl worked at this affirmation program for several

months and in time started to believe the things he was telling himself. He appeared to be more confident and felt that he liked himself more. To his surprise, however, many people still treated him poorly. Some even felt he was being phony; they experienced his new-found confidence as false bravado. Although Carl thought he had changed his view of himself, at an unconscious level he was still restrained by attitudes and beliefs he assimilated as a child. Unresolved anger and hurt dogged his efforts to transform his past, and impacted his self-concept more deeply than any program of self-affirmation ever would. Carl needed more than wishful thinking and programmed thoughts. He needed to come to terms with the origins of his low self-worth. He needed to face the monster that imprisoned him. Trying to sweettalk his way out of an inner battle was not going to work, for the battle was there to make him stronger. Carl also needed to earn his own respect by living up to his personal ideals in the present. Oftentimes we try to change our life by changing the world around us. Sometimes this is the answer. Many times it is not. We think a different spouse or partner will solve our relationship
Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
September 2014
problems, but are then surprised when similar issues pop up in our next relationship. We think that more money, a different house, or a different job will make us happy, but then discover any improvements to be temporary and, ultimately, off-target. We abstain from one addiction only to fall under the spell of another. For example, some people stop drinking without confronting the egocentric attitudes that contributed to their drinking in the first place. Instead of alcohol, they become addicted to anger. Their egocentricity has merely found a different outlet. Lasting change only comes with a genuine and thorough awareness of the underlying attitudes and beliefs that drive your behavior. For instance, it is not enough to know that you are a push-over for other people. It is important to get to the very heart of this pattern in your life. What are the unconscious attitudes and life experiences that drive this behavior? What thoughts and perspectives maintain it? How does it hurt you and others? And, on the other hand, what hidden or secondary gain might you derive from it? What does it help you avoid? The hidden, shadow side of your behavior and decision patterns must be addressed with searching honesty, courage, and humility if authentic change is to occur. Unless there is change at depth, there is no real change at all.

There’s so much more to this topic, but this should suffice for now. So, if you have PCOS (increased testosterone, abnormal menstrual cycles and ovarian cysts) in an isolated diagnosis or in combination with any of the conditions listed in the first paragraph of this article, just know that all of the above abnormal chemistry and accompanying symptoms are very modifiable almost always without hormone replacement therapy. Don’t let anyone tell you its okay to have PCOS, that it’s not a big deal, that you don’t have it (and you have all or most of the above symptoms) or that you have to live with it. You don’t. Beautify Skin with Bio-identical Hormones

ast month, I addressed the fabulous effects of progesterone on panic, anxiety and insomnia. Getting immediate relief with 50 mg of progesterone rubbed on the wrists and forearms is truly amazing! It is not feminizing and is good for males and children; a Godsend. It is also a great face cream and has been made into facial products for 50 years. As we age, the skin starts breaking down. More lines, wrinkles, brown spots, bruising and thinning skin. Bio-identical hormones are wonderful to slow down the aging process. For women, BiEst cream is essential to keep up the lining of the vagina to prevent dryness and urinary tract infection, and when applied topically to the face, it helps create gorgeous facial skin. BiEst is 80 percent estriol, the safest estrogen with 20 percent estradiol. It slows and reverses the fine lines above the mouth and gives much better texture and fullness to the entire facial area. Bio-identical BiEst always needs to be balanced with progesterone cream applied topically to the forearms several times per day. Progesterone also reduces cortisol which causes abdominal fat and blocks any estrogen dominance symptoms including breast cancer. Testosterone for Men and Women Testosterone, the sexy hormone in both sexes, is good not only for libido (sex drive), but also many other uses. Testosterone is very important for men with low blood levels. It is anti-inflammatory, great for mood, energy and libido, and it is also a Human Growth

Hormone stimulant (HGH). HGH is good for thinning skin, bone health and good mood as we age. It hits low age levels by age 40. Men report better energy, muscle mass and well-being on natural testosterone cream replacement. For men, applying testosterone to facial skin daily improves lines, wrinkles and gives more fullness. Women can use testosterone cream at lady levels (about 1/1/0th to 1/5th of male levels) especially to the perineum, the area around the vagina and rectum. This will improve libido dramatically and also reduce urinary stress incontinence. Overdose in women can be quite variable. Too much causes acne and facial or breast hair and the dose needs to be reduced. Breast Health Progesterone protects the breast against breast cancer and it also improves breast firmness. Apply progesterone several times per week to help normalize breast size; it may increase small breasts size and reduce the size of pendulous breast, which are caused by estrogen dominance. Remember, fat makes estrogen and estrogen makes fat. At menopause, when all hormones decline, a little BiEst cream applied to the breast several times per week can also help to maintain firmness. Overdose on BiEst, as with all estrogen supplementation, can cause painful breasts. Too much BiEst can cause periods in post-menopausal women. Some experts regard this as a youthful expression of female hormones and

Sport Camp in Lake Tahoe

Inger Norman
Written By Ffjorren Frisbee
hen I first spoke with Inger Norman, Founder and Co-Director of the Specialized Women Sports Camp Series, I could feel her enthusiasm through the phone. She was downto-earth, easy to talk to, and most importantly, she genuinely cared about her business. Her passion, energy and integrity lived within the overall idea of the camp: women and sport. After our conversation, I couldn’t wait to attend the event. With four camp packages to choose from (and optional a la carte), I was gearing up for the “Triathlete’s Edge.” This two-day challenge would put me on the road, on the trail and in open water, with some of the world’s elite athletes. My A-list instructors included Anik Wild, Pro Stand Up Paddler and Owner of Waterman’s Landing; Heidi Boynton, Founder of Mini Mermaid Running Club, Triathlete and Coach; Julie Young, former Cycling Pro and US Team Rider; Jessi Stendsland, Elite Multisport Athlete and Creator of MovementU (along with Sag Monkey, Le Grand Adventure Tours and Specialized). With little knowledge in the road cycling and open water swim aspects of the “Tri,” I was going to jump in, head first, and get as much out of this camp as I possibly could!
DAY ONE 8 am: Waterman’s Landing in Carnelian Bay (GREAT coffee/café) with Anik. It was 1.5 hours of SUP instruction, practice and racing fun! 10 am: Open Water Swim Clinic with Heidi. This was my intro to swimming with a purpose, in a wetsuit, in open water. It was challenging to say the least! My fear: not being able to “steer” toward my target. Also, breathing correctly was an issue. In the end, albeit tired, I was ready to jump back in for more! 12:30 pm: Road Bike Maintenance Clinic with Sag Monkey. I now know how to change a road bike tire (I just need a bike)! 2 pm: I met with Specialized reps to saddle up for my upcoming ride. My $9K demo bike weighed in at a mere 14 lbs. The helmet: a perfect fit! 2:30 pm: Road Skills and Ride with Julie (and Jeff from Le Grand Adventure). My fear: sharing a road with cars without getting hit. So, riding downhill, from Northstar to a nearby neighborhood, while cars sped by, was new to me. It was exhilarating! I came. I rode. I conquered. 4 pm: End of day announcements, tear-inducing “best moments of the day” and giveaways. 5:30 pm: The Grubby Social. Apps, wine and socializing at Petra in Northstar Village. Sweat, helmet hair and stories required.

Nutrients That Think They’re
Dessert
C
Submitted By Kathy Woodward
When talking about chocolate and its health benefits, it’s crucial to know one thing: not all chocolate is created equal. Most commercially produced chocolates process the cacao beans from which the cocoa base is made in a way that destroys most of its key nutrients, including its various antioxidants. Heating, roasting and “dutching” (adding alkali) all degrade the nutritional content of chocolate, and are the main reason chocolate has been viewed as a “junk” food for the last several decades.
acao is a treasure trove of nutrients that deliver a wide range of benefits to the body. It’s no secret that virtually everyone loves chocolate, right? But when it comes to healthy foods, most people don’t typically include chocolate on their list. Most people think chocolate is a sinful indulgence, loaded with fat, sugar and calories that contributes only to poor health. A new perspective, however, has emerged as a huge body of research overwhelmingly shows that cocoa and chocolate possess a wide range of health benefits, from cardiovascular and brain health to improved energy and immune function.
However, there are healthy dark chocolate products that coldprocess the cocoa without “dutching,” thereby retaining the robust antioxidant firepower of cacao. These premium-grade chocolates even deliver a rich, robust flavor that surpasses most chocolates available.
Cocoa’s health-promoting potential can be traced back to its optimized nutritional profile. It may surprise you to learn that chocolate is rich in a variety of nutrients that give it its energyboosting, disease-preventing properties, even rivaling the nutritional power of many commonplace fruits and vegetables. Its key ingredients include various vitamins and minerals, and perhaps the most important ingredients are its polyphenols-including catechins, flavanols and flavonoids. These compounds are proving to be potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cellprotecting health agents.

Nature’s Top Antioxidant Powerhouse There is a good reason that dark chocolate is such a powerful superfood. The primary aspect of cacao’s health benefits resides in its being one of the top antioxidant-containing foods known today. Antioxidants are compounds that neutralize free radicals, rogue molecules that damage cells and tissues in the body and contribute to literally dozens of diseases. The cacao bean contains several classes of antioxidants, including flavanols and flavonoids, both of which are known to protect

than 1,200, in fact--have been conducted on cacao, chocolate and their primary nutrients, with the vast majority demonstrating that cacao is a superior source of essential nutrients and antioxidants. Additionally, these studies show a broad range of benefits that affect virtually every body system. In fact, the scientific support is so strong that many health experts feel that chocolate is the most scientifically validated food we currently have.
Top Reasons to Eat Healthy Chocolate Heart Health: Promotes Cardiovascular Health – Various studies suggest that cocoa can have a beneficial effect on the heart and blood vessels by supporting healthy cholesterol levels and by controlling inflammation.
If you are seeking to improve your health, enhance your wellness regimen, or have a condition that simply has not responded to traditional therapies, consider a healthy chocolate product. Like tens of thousands of others, you may experience an improvement in health you never thought possible.
Diabetes: Supports Healthy Glucose Levels – Scientists have found that cocoa polyphenols can positively affect glucose levels in the blood. In fact, a recent review of 42 studies found that the majority showed that subjects enjoyed distinct improvement in glucose and insulin balance when consuming some sort of antioxidant-rich cocoa food or beverage. The researchers stated, “We found consistent benefits of chocolate or cocoa on promising effects on insulin and insulin resistance . . .”

Fibromyalgia: A 2006 study found that cocoa’s flavanol content may make it a viable treatment for and possibly prevent a broad array of chronic diseases resulting from dysfunctional inflammatory responses, like fibromyalgia, colitis and lupus. (841)

the body in a variety of ways. In addition, cacao contains a truly unique nutrient profile that enhances the antioxidant activity of its free radical-fighting antioxidant compounds, and hundreds of studies back this up, showing that cacao is a powerful protector of the body’s primary organs and systems.

What Makes A Good Healthy Chocolate? Besides the proper cold-processing method, what else should consumers look for in a dark, healthy chocolate product? A good chocolate product should register among the highest ORAC scores, which reflects a food’s antioxidant capacity. A top-grade chocolate product should also use low-glycemic sweeteners such as raw cane juice and crystalline fructose. And unlike “candy” chocolates that typically substitute in milk solids and oils, a premium-grade chocolate should retain the natural cocoa butter in cacao. Cocoa butter improves a product’s taste and feel while retaining a “neutral” fat status. Finally, an effective dark chocolate should also be free of artificial ingredients, waxes, fillers or added caffeine.

Solved The Riddle of Heart Attacks Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.
T
The clearest information showing the connection between thyroid function and heart attacks is a comparison of a study by Dr. Barnes comparing his results in preventing heart attacks with a study done in conventional medicine called the “Framingham Study.” Over 5000 residents of the small town of Framingham, Mass., were followed over a 20 year period. It was found that factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, sex and advancing age were important factors leading to an incidence of 150 heart attacks per 1000 residents.
he rapid rise in heart attacks during the 20th century caused panic in the public, and confusion among the scientists. Diet received most of the blame, although cigarettes, a lack of exercise, and various environmental factors have also been suspected. It is a known fact that more than 50 percent of patients presenting to the ER with a confirmed “heart attack” have normal cholesterols! So what is the answer? In 1976, a physician named Broda Barnes, M.D., PhD, published a book summarizing research dating back to the 1870s proving heart attacks are a result of poorly functioning thyroid glands.
In Dr. Barnes’ own personal study over the same time period he found, in the thyroid treated group in over 2000 patients, he had an annual rate of heart attacks of only 2 per 1000 patients!
The usual heart attack--the one that is feared--is due to hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis. This is an insidious process that may have been going on for years before the restriction of blood flow causes any symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath.
Dr. Barnes went on to develop a way of testing thyroid function using body temperatures, instead of the notoriously inaccurate blood tests available today. He proved the massive increase in heart attacks during modern times is not due to poor diet or lack of exercise. The real problem is widespread poorly functioning thyroid glands.
In 1877, Professor/Surgeon Billroth (the eminent Vienna surgeon who perfected the stomach ulcer operations still used today) clearly showed removal of the thyroid gland from sheep and goats would produce arterial degeneration in arteries throughout the animal, including the coronary vessels supplying the heart. These herbivore animals never consumed cholesterol containing foods. This was long before cholesterol was associated with atherosclerosis.
References: 1. Barnes, Broda, M.D., Ph.D. Solved: The Riddle of Heart Attacks. Robinson Press, Inc. 1976.
These early experiments clearly demonstrated thyroid deficiency, not dietary cholesterol, was implicated in arterial degeneration whose characteristics were similar to those in the human.
2. Hurxthal LM: Blood cholesterol and thyroid disease, Archives of Internal Medicine, 53:762, 1932.
There is such a direct connection between high cholesterol and low thyroid function that during the 1930s, some Harvard researchers suggested being able to detect thyroid problems by measuring the blood cholesterol level!

AT EASE! Written By June Milligan,M.Ed.,CCHt, PLR
W
hen overwhelmed with inner turbulence, it would be nice if we instinctively tried to calm ourselves into a state of ease before starting to sort out solutions. However, most of us have to be taught to do this. We know that a state of ease helps calm our heart, which helps to re-stabilize the mind and emotions, but getting into the habit of consciously calming ourselves automatically may take some practice. Learning to do this consciously reconnects us with our reasoning capacity and helps us get a clear view of the situation. There are many advantages of accessing our state of inner ease, not just for bailing out of emotional turbulence, but to use throughout the day to maintain a solid connection between the heart, mind and emotions.
Practicing inner-ease can bring us to a state of flow in our daily routines. It helps regulate the balance and cooperation between our heart, mind and emotions. Researchers at the HeartMath Institute call that balance “coherence.” Increased coherence promotes more effective reasoning, easier discernment and calmer interactions with others. The lack of coherence generates resistance to “flow,” resulting in stress from anxiety, indecision, frustration, impatience, anger, self-judgment and more--a familiar list. Here are the steps to an easy inner-ease technique: • If you’re stressed, acknowledge your feelings as soon as you sense you’re out of sync.
Research shows there is a certain millivolt measurement of electromagnetic energy that is emitted by the heart, sometimes extending eight to 10 feet beyond the body. The electromagnetic energy of the heart is much stronger than that of the brain. But for people who are depressed, or have serious diseases, that amount is two to three times less than healthy people, and five or six times less than people who meditate regularly or use mindfulness practices. At the speed of life today, operating on low heart energy can be compared to a vehicle that’s operating low on oil, which increases vulnerability to stress and malfunction. Learning to address life from the state of ease can help increase the heart/ self-care connection in our interactions with others and can help reduce or actually prevent stress.

• Take a short time-out and do heart-focused breathing (breathe a little slower than usual while pretending you’re breathing through your heart, through the chest wall if you wish. (This is scientifically proven to help create coherent wave patterns in your heart rhythm--which helps restore balance and calmness in your mental and emotional state.) • During the heart-focused breathing, in through your nose and out through your mouth like you’re blowing out a candle, imagine with each breath that you’re drawing in a feeling of inner-ease and infusing your mental and emotional body with balance and self-care from your heart.

• Practicing will increase your awareness of when the stressful emotions have calmed down into a state of ease. When the stress has calmed, and you feel that those deep breaths have created an anchor of calmness, then go ahead with your projects, challenges or interactions. This technique also allows you to “stand back” and observe the situation. It will therefore serve another purpose--keeping you out of the emotional storm. As long as you stay out of the emotional storm, you retain your power. When you’re engaged and in the middle of the argument or storm, you have no power. You’ve given it all away. So stand back, become an observer of the situation and of human behavior, and retain your power, in a way that also helps your heart.

LOSE WEIGHT & KEEP IT OFF!
A major benefit of practicing inner-ease is being able to consciously regulate the balance and cooperation between our heart, mind and emotions. This allows us extra time to decide on effective choices, reactions, decisions, etc. Being able to make a clear choice on what to do or say next prevents much energy drain and “re-do.” Another benefit is to help facilitate quicker recoup from unexpected stressful occurrences that we all encounter. This benefits our health, well-being and quality of life. This “at ease” technique is also helpful right before engaging in potentially stressful situations, such as giving presentations, attending important meetings or performing. So, it is very helpful to be able to easily shift to our inner-ease space at the onset of stressful feelings, which can help us prevent stressful scenarios from even happening. This technique is quick, easy and is scientifically proven to work. So say to yourself, “at ease” while doing your deep breathing and emotionally stepping back from the situation. Your heart will thank you.

EMPOWERINGTHOUGHTS Written By Jack Elliott, Change Strategist
The Four Attributes of Change
C
hange is inevitable. I believe that whenever change occurs, opportunity shows up at the same time. However, for many of us, somewhere along the line, we decided that change is, or was not, a natural occurrence, so we began to resist it. Often, it is resistance itself that is the catalyst for us to reverse a very natural course of action (change). Here is what I know for sure: Each occurrence of change--no matter how horrific--shows up with its soul mate: opportunity. To fully understand this, you must first know what I call the four attributes of change.
boss comes to you and tells you this change means you are being laid off. As you drive home that evening, it’s pretty hard to see the “opportunity” that has just come to you--so you hang out in worry, disappointment and despair. “But I worked so hard! How can they do this to me?” You languish in your “victimhood.” If you land here, know it is natural, but don’t get stuck on this plateau. If you do, you will live your life as someone who believes life happens to them; a life of worry, disappointment and despair.
Four Attributes of Change
When change shows up at your door and your first instinctual thoughts, or perhaps even the first words out of your mouth, are “Well, this is alright by me,” then you are coming from a place of acknowledgement where you see change as inevitable. You will just make the best of it. Maybe you’ve wanted out of the relationship for a long while, but you just didn’t break it off. Instead you acted so unloving, they finally left you. You wanted change to occur, but you were passive. If you live your life on this plateau, you have evolved only slightly above the stage of victimhood. There is a bit of satisfaction in the “other shoe has finally dropped,” but you have forgotten that you could have perpetuated the change sooner had you only had the courage to be true to yourself.
“To Me” Victim – Change happens to me. “By Me” – I accept that change is inevitable, I’ll roll with it. “Through Me” – I am the catalyst for change. Tell me what to do and I’ll happily go “change” it. “As Me” – I am the innovator of change – What if…? When change shows up at your door, you might automatically perceive the change as something that is happening “to you,” thus you perceive yourself as the victim of change. For instance, another company acquires the company where you work. Your

When change happens “through you,” you are finding your courage. Perhaps you are that small town boy who knows this small town is just not for you. You read books that are not required reading. You check out the atlas to figure out how to get from where you are to where you want to be. You have an attitude of “I can do this, just show me how!” When change happens “through you” you break the mold of victimhood and passivity. You want change to happen; you just don’t know how to make it happen through you without the help of a mentor, guide or leader. To live life on this plateau, you are a follower. You might even rise up and be the great number two person. You may even be the mentor, guide or leader to some following behind you, but there is still “one more” level of awareness for you to reach. You are close, you’re just not quiet there. You are not an innovator.
Jack Elliott, is the Chief Strategy Officer for Muir Medical Group, IPA in Walnut Creek, CA. As a Change Strategist he coaches both corporations and individuals on how the be innovators rather than victims of change. You may email Jack at jackrelliott@ me.com, or visit his website at jackrelliott.com.
An innovator only sees change as opportunity. Change is as natural as breathing. Therefore, innovators are not afraid of it. In fact, they are always peering down the road and around the next corner in anticipation of what might be there, and the opportunities ahead. Innovators perceive themselves as the catalyst for change. They are constantly calculating possibilities. They never say “If only…,” they only say “What if….” Metaphysically, they see themselves as being one or aligned with change. They have mastered using the opportunity of change as a natural occurrence for good. Innovators not only see the opportunity in change, they “flow” with it and they “guide” it as if they have called the opportunity forth from somewhere within them—“as me.” Innovators are called to be “agents of change.” They know the answer (opportunity) is always within them. When they inhale, that are asking “What if?” and as they exhale the idea is offered up and communicated out through them.

or lack of proper nutrients may be causing your weight gain.
The good news: we were all born with the intuition to be innovators. Babies are greatest teachers of this. They teach us the four attributes of change are merely plateaus in our development as self. A baby learning to walk falls down, it hurts and then cries; they are in their victimhood. But, intuitively they have the desire to evolve, to walk. It is alright by them when they passively allow you to hold on to them as they negotiate their first steps. When they become tired of trying, it is alright by them for you to carry them for a while. But soon, their internal knowingness that they can walk propels, and they want down just as soon as you’ve picked them up. They must try again as their desire to walk moves through them. Finally, in their natural knowingness that they can walk, they become the innovator--all on their own. They let go of your hand and walk along holding on to the edge of the couch, the coffee table or their stroller. They find ways to get from where they are to where they want to be--all on their own. Soon, the opportunity fully manifests and change occurs, and they experience the life changing moment “as me.” Through their innovative spirit, they experience the realization they have taught themselves how to walk. Change occurred naturally. Change was nothing but opportunity.

industry alone discharges 2.5 billion tons of waste water per year. Millions of tons of unused fabric goes to waste each year when fabrics are dyed the wrong color or have other flaws. any parents are becoming increasingly concerned about how their choices as consumers will impact the planet their young children will inherit. These choices are regularly discussed around issues of food and nutrition, but as conscious consumers, we sometimes forget that the choices we make in the clothes we buy also impact our planet and its inhabitants. The children’s wear market is a huge, multi-billion dollar industry that has increased by 15 percent in just the last five years alone. An important thing to remember about the garment industry is that it requires an enormous amount of energy to produce both the raw materials, and the finished product; and in the process, it creates much waste and pollution. In China, where over 50 percent of the world’s clothing is produced, they also produce three billion tons of soot and discharge, over 300,000 tons of Co2. A single mill in China can use over 200 tons of water for each ton of fabric during the dying process. Many rivers have been contaminated by runoff of toxic dyes as well. The Chinese garment

In 2006, human rights workers discovered over 200 children, some younger than age 11, sewing clothing for Hanes, Wal-Mart, J.C. Penny and Puma. While much work has been done to raise awareness about child labor, it is still present in many parts of the world through the vicious cycles of the corrupt preying on the impoverished. Even when child labor is not taking place in garment factories, the working conditions are often hellacious, and the wages are paltry. For example, according to the National Labor Committee, women sewing NBA jerseys make 24 cents on a garment that will eventually sell for $140. The vast majority of garment workers are women, and many are forced to undergo humiliating physical exams, or forced to take birth control, so they won’t get pregnant or take maternity leave. Earlier this year, a woman in South Wales discovered a message reading “forced to work exhausting hours” hand sewn onto the tag of a dress she had bought at a discount fashion chain store. And as recent tragedies, such as the collapse of the garment factory in Bangladesh, which resulted in the deaths of 1,127 people have illustrated, we still have a lot of work to do in ensuring fair and decent working conditions for the people who make our clothing. The reason I point all of this out is to remind parents what some of the hidden costs of those cheap clothes on the racks at your local big box store might be. Instead of buying brand new clothes for your little one, consider secondhand whenever possible. There are many locally owned businesses that sell gently used children’s clothes such as Once-upon-a-child, Sippee’s and Play it again Kids. By supporting businesses such as these, more money stays in the community while less resourcing is required. When you do purchase new clothing, support local businesses, or go to Etsy.com features many independently operated mom and pop owned businesses that pride themselves on carrying

I have included the link below in the references. By making conscious choices about the clothing we buy, we can teach our children that we value the wellbeing of our fellow humans and this amazing planet over the short term desire to own whatever this minute’s new trend might be. We can teach them that true beauty stems from kindness and integrity, which never go out of style.

Sea Buckthorn Written By Allison Prater
The fruit is an important winter food resource for some birds, notably fieldfares. Leaves are eaten by the larvae of several different moths. Harvesting the fruit is difficult because of the dense arrangement of thorns among the berries on each branch. There are two common harvesting techniques. One involves removing the branches entirely, and freezing them, so that the berries to be easily shaken off. This method is destructive, and reduces future harvests. The second method involves mechanical shakers, and is thought to be less damaging to the sea-buckthorn. It also leaves about 50 percent of the fruit on the plant after harvest, so there is still food for other living beings in that habitat, such as the aforementioned fieldfares.
H
ippophae, or Sea Buckthorn, are deciduous shrubs in the oleaster family, which is comprised of small trees and shrubs native to temperate regions in the Northern hemisphere, extending south into tropical Asia and Australia. Common sea buckthorn is the most widespread of the species in this genus, with a range of its eight subspecies extending from the Atlantic coasts of Europe through northwestern Mongolia and northwestern China. In Western Europe, it is mostly found on salty sea coasts, where sea buckthorn out-competes many larger plants. It thrives in the dry semi-deserts of central Asia, where other plants cannot. In central Europe and Asia, it occurs as a subalpine shrub above the tree line in mountains, and in other sunny areas, such as river banks. Sea buckthorn is very tolerant of salt in the air and soil, but demands full sunlight for good growth. They do not tolerate shady conditions near larger trees, but prefer dry and sandy conditions. One variety, the willow leaved sea buckthorn only grows in the Himalayas. There has even been a test crop grown in Nevada.
Sea buckthorn is a popular garden shrub, and its strong root system is prized in landscaping, especially when used to create barrier hedges and windbreaks, as well as to stabilize riverbanks and steep slopes. In fact, it was once distributed free of charge to Canadian prairie farmers to be used in shelter-belts. Branches are sometimes used by florists in designing holiday ornaments. Sea buckthorn berries are edible and highly nutritious. They are unpleasant to eat raw, as they are astringent and oily. They become more pleasant, once bletted, a process that allows the fruit to sit beyond ripening in order to reduce its astringency. This is also done with persimmons, quince, medlars and service tree fruit. Frosting also reduces the astringency. The fruit is often mixed with other sweeteners, or fruits such as apple and grape. The fruit is high in vitamin C, with an average content about 15 times greater than that of oranges, making sea buckthorn fruit one of the most enriched plant sources of vitamin C. The fruit also contains dense contents of carotenoids, vitamin E, amino acids, dietary minerals and polyphenols. The fruit can be used to make pies, jams, fruit wines and liquors. In Mongolia, it is made into a juice drink, and in Finland it is used as a nutritional ingredient in baby food. The oil is also found in nutritional supplements and cosmetics. The oil from the berry, either taken orally, or applied topically, is said to be a skin softener.
More than 90 percent, or roughly 5,800 square miles, of the world’s natural sea buckthorn habitat is found in China, Russia, northern Europe and Canada. The plant is used for soil, water and wildlife conservation purposes and for food, medicine and cosmetic products. Common sea buckthorn has branches that are dense, stiff and covered with thorns. The leaves are pale green, with a silver sheen. It has separate male and female plants. The male produces brownish flowers, which produce a pollen that is distributed by the wind. The female plants produce orange, berry-like fruits about a quarter of an inch in diameter. They are soft, juicy and rich in oils. The roots of the plants distribute themselves rapidly and extensively, and act as a nitrogen fixer to the surrounding soils.

BOOKREVIEW Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan,M.Ed.,CCHt, PLR
LIVING BLISS
Major Discoveries Along The Holistic Path By Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D. In the 29 books that Dr. Shealy has written, and through the multiple devices he has invented, he’s shown us how to live not only long but also well. He breaks down the walls between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of our being. He is a true pioneer of healing and shows us that the medicine of the future is available now.
W
The five rings include from six to ten bilateral acupoints, which are clearly shown through drawings in the book. One can just tap these points and get some of the same effects. Many people who had read his previous books were doing just that. Then, he created combinations of essential oils to apply to those points, and found that the beneficial effects were much greater. Dr. Joseph Helms, founding president of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture says, “During the past ten years I’ve been treating patients with Norm Shealy’s ring combinations along with acupuncture needles, with gratifying results. Now that he has formulated and bottled specific aroma combinations for each ring, I have turned the treatment over to the patients themselves. I can confirm from both personal and professional experience that stimulating these point combinations with the oils delivers the expected results.” CDs for the sound activation of each specific ring are also available.
e know from decades of research that conscientious individuals enjoy longer and healthier lives. The two critical features of conscientiousness are: being organized and responsible, which are traits which contribute the most to society anyway. Unfortunately, many people fail to achieve their greatest potential because they didn’t have the nurturing or bonding that was necessary for these traits to develop. We know these traits are necessary for a lifetime of health, happiness and success. This book explains the importance of conscientiousness and gives you the tools to increase your self-esteem, health and longevity by explaining how you can use acupressure to activate the hormone oxytocin as well as other vital hormones. In the 60s, pain management was revolutionized by the invention of the TENS unit. Dr. Shealy’s research was vital to the development of that device, which uses electrical nerve stimulation to reduce pain. Now, he has developed a procedure of applying essential oils to certain meridian acupoints, without needles or electrical stimulation. Based on research during the past twenty years, it is now possible for you to activate five specific acupressure circuits, which Dr. Shealy calls “rings.” The activation of one or more of these circuits does five things: Restore DHEA, the most import healthenhancing hormone; boost your calcitonin, the essential thyroid hormone for maintaining bone strength and reducing pain; reduce free radicals, the scavengers that essentially wear out, or “rust,” your body; balance your aldosterone, the adrenal hormone responsible for water and potassium health; and activate your crucial bonding, nurturing hormone--oxytocin--the ultimate bliss hormone!
Dr. Shealy is a neurosurgeon who founded the first comprehensive Pain Rehabilitation Clinic in 1971. He founded the American Holistic Medical Association in 1978 and was the founding president of Holos University Graduate Seminary, where he is now professor emeritus of energy medicine. He has 12 patents in the field of energy medicine and, in addition to the 29 books he has written, he has also authored over 300 scientific research papers. His work with Carolyn Myss established the scientific foundation for medical intuition. His free weekly newsletter is available at normshealy.com, as is additional information for ordering products. His radio call-in show can be heard live on the internet at 2:07 p.m. Central time each Thursday at newstalk560.com. There are also videos on YouTube showing exactly how to place the essential oils on the necessary acupoints of the body. This man has all the necessary credentials in both conventional and alternative medicine. All his life he has had a burning desire to help people. He truly is an example of conscientiousness, which is the thread running throughout this work. The book covers so much more than this short review and is certainly worth reading. It can be purchased at local bookstores or online.
Dr. William Tiller, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Stanford University says, “This book is a kind of crowning capstone that Dr. Shealy has given to humanity in his remarkable current lifetime. The subtle human acupuncture meridian system is the template that energizes and nourishes all aspects of our electric physical body. Dr. Shealy has shown how five rings of specific meridian-point stimulation with five specific oil combinations bring healing to a large number of human ailments.” September 2014

Dr. Yost has had excellent training and experience in vaginal (incision-less) hysterectomy and laparoscopic-assisted (very small incisions) hysterectomy. Many women are not aware that they are candidates for a vaginally completed hysterectomy which avoids scars, reduces postoperative pain and recovery time, and is considered the route of choice by most authorities. If hysterectomy cannot be avoided, because of this approach, most of Dr. Yost’s patients feel well enough to go home the day of surgery.
DAY TWO 7:30 am: Yoga at Northstar Village. It was a great way to ease our muscles into the day’s coming activity. 8:30 am: Running Efficiency Clinic with Jessi. Although I felt confident and experienced in my running, I gained a few new go-to practices, along with a new perspective on training and running prep. Jessi’s passion for movement was contagious. 10:30 am: Trail Run with Jessi. As our heels hit the sand, dirt and rock, I felt compelled to put forth all effort as I sustained the mental and physical focus Jessi asked us to maintain. 1 pm: Open Water Swim, Tri Tips, Skills and Training with Heidi. No, we did not have steak. But, we learned the ins and outs of a triathlon transition, and then we put it to the test. I went from wetsuit on land, to water, to land, to bike, to run. Triathlon: here I come! And, thank you Heidi for your one-on-one help! 4 pm: End of camp announcements, “best moments” and giveaways. And, of course, our goodbyes [insert sad face].

As Clinical Faculty at the UNR School of Medicine, she enjoys teaching our local medical students. Whether it is a routine annual exam, gynecologic problem, or surgical consultation, Dr. Yost strives to provide individualized, evidence-based care by anticipating potential women’s health issues, empowering her patients with information, and offering them choices in their care. Dr. Yost is accepting new patients into her general gynecology practice and would like to personally extend her welcome. “I believe that taking good care of women is my way of supporting and influencing so many others in the world.” For more info, or to make an appointment, contact Dr. Yost at (775) 284-3482. After looking at the financial tally of camp registration, travel, accommodations, gear, food, etc., the price tag is absolutely more than a typical race registration or an everyday trip to your favorite sporting gear store. But, overall, this camp is well worth the financial investment. Campers leave with new strategies and techniques for training, a deeper level of knowledge in each sport, and an energizing and encouraging sense of accomplishment. Combine that with new friends, adventure-filled stories, maybe even a battle wound or two, and this event should become a female athlete’s to-do list staple! CRYSTOLOGY Written By Lissie Lyles
Jasper
The Make-up Stone
J
asper is a fine-grained chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz. A common stone that comes in many beautiful colors and patterns, Jasper is typically found in hues ranging from black, brown, to red, orange, yellow and green. It is associated with the planet Mars, the element of fire, and has associations with astrological signs of Leo, Taurus, Virgo and Scorpio. Jasper balances yin and yang energies.

Metaphysically, Jasper is known as a stone of gentleness. It is sometimes called the “nurturing stone.” It is said to provide protection in a way that is both strong and peaceful. It is a grounding, supportive stone in times of high stress. It instills confidence and courage in the wearer, especially when in contact with the skin. Jasper is used for bringing beauty into life and specific situations. Beauty brought by jasper can be striking inner beauty, as well as external beauty. This has earned it the nickname “make up stone.” Red is the most commonly found color of Jasper, and as such, its healing properties are focused on the blood and related organs, such as the heart and liver. Jasper is used in crystal healing, particularly for the liver, kidney, gallbladder, stomach and intestinal problems including heartburn, IBS, acid reflux, hallucinations, longevity, epilepsy and seizures. It is used in gemstone therapy to stimulate sexual energy and fertility, though usually a mix of different jasper colors is used (such as blue jasper, yellow jasper and green jasper), not just the red stones. Jasper can also be used to enhance healing of any kind as well as pain relief. Because Jasper works best when touched, it can be quite effective if the stone is placed on the part of the body that is troubled.

INGREDIENTWATCH Written By Lissie Lyles
Lip Gloss
T
There’s an urban legend floating around that claims the average woman eats 7 LBs of lipstick in her lifetime. Regardless of the volume, cosmetic products worn on lips are not only absorbed into the skin, but some of it is ingested. It would certainly make sense then to look very carefully at the ingredient list on your tube of lip gloss, a closer inspection may reveal some ingredients that are...well, not so delicious. Let’s take a closer look.
Pros: Many of the ingredients on this list are recognizable as food. For the most part, the ingredients can be generally considered safe and benign for topical use. Cons: No organic ingredients specified and the list includes soybean oil, which could come from a GMO source. This product is not suitable for vegans because of the inclusion of beeswax. Carmine is a red pigment/dye derived from insects native to South America and Mexico that live as parasites on cactus plants. It is used as a colorant in food, cosmetics and textiles, and has been associated with severe allergic reactions.
Burt’s Bee’s Lip Gloss, Ruby Moon: Ingredients: rincinus communis (castor) seed oil, oleic/ linoleic/linolenic polyglycerides, cera alba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), aroma (flavor), helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, silica, olea europaea (olive) fruit oil, jojoba esters, ammonium glycyrrhizate, tocopherol, glycine sojo (soybean) oil, may contain: bismuth oxychloride, tin oxide, iron oxides, mica, carmine, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Silica, Mica (CI 77019), Iron Oxide (CI 77491), Flavor, Ammonium Glycyrrhizate, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Tocopheryl Acetate, Benzyl Benzoate. Pros: A few ingredients can be recognized as actual plants. Cons: Not organic. Not suitable for vegans. There is strong evidence that suggests Tocopheryl Acetate, a skin conditioning agent, is a skin toxicant, and can cause allergic reactions. In addition, one or more animal studies have shown that high doses of this ingredient lead to tumor formation. It is also suspected to be an environmental toxin. Benzyl benzoate is associated with endocrine disruption, immune system toxicity, and allergies, especially at high doses.

INSTRUCTIONS
You can keep this facial mask in the refrigerator for about five days. If you want to keep a nice green color, add a squeeze of lemon, which will add vitamin C to your skin. At the end of summer, I make a staple and freeze it in in small 1-applyportions. It keeps me going for a while. One mask per week makes a big difference!
• Tear out and remove the stems of the Plantain; you will see little sticky threads coming out of the leaf, these are great for your skin •
Wash the leaves
•
Cut the avocado in half and scoop out the meat
•
Throw all the ingredients in your blender
TIPS
•
Blend until smooth
•
If needed, add an extra spoon of olive oil
• Play with other oils, jojoba oil, macadamia oil, almond oil, etc.
AND NOW...
• You can add essential oils to make it even more luxurious and healing (lavender and sweet orange are wonderful for the skin)
• Put up your hair, run your bath and apply this fresh and soothing, first-class cream to your face
• Leftovers can be stored for about five days in a sealed container in the fridge
• Relax for 15 minutes with your eyes closed--enjoy the sensation
• At the end of summer, make a large portion and freeze in small, one apply-portions (ice cube trays work well). Now you can still have a weekly detoxifying and rejuvenating mask
•
Rinse off with lukewarm water
•
Now splash ice cold water on your face
•
Dry off gently
•
Look in the mirror and say, “Wow! Is that ME?”
