COVERSTORY
C
onsidering that I was born in the month of June, I’ve always had a soft spot for it in my heart. It seems a lovely month for transition. Where spring turns to summer; and the sun warms our day, while cool breezes fill the evening air. I always viewed summer as a grounding point, a time when we firmly root into our annual growth process. I look at the year as an evolution of our being, gradually progressing through each season. With winter, we are refreshed or cleansed of our previous stresses and stagnant anxiety. The cool weather keeps us bundled, along with the new plans for the coming year; where we keep them sheltered from harsh elements, until they are ready to transpire. As spring approaches, it offers renewal; a new slate, with fertile soil. We are doused with rain, sunshine and warmth; and the buds of our ideas, creativities and new endeavors peek through. Summer rides in with heat and passion; increasing the temperature, daylight hours and stormy weather. It is here where one must stand firm in one’s point of production. There is much possibility of continued growth during the summer months; however, its distractions are eminent. In order to prosper through the promiscuity of summer, one must truly dig one’s heels in, and ride it out; stand tall and keep reaching for maturation. Come fall, if all is well, we begin to reap the benefits of our labor. One hopes to find one’s annual endeavors in full harvest; and as we taste the delight of our prosperities, another process emerges. Thus begins the compost of the months past. With that, the progress of our previous days are not lost, but rather worked into our “soil,” or the foundation of our being. Winter sets in and we have added yet another layer of enriched soil to our land. With that, on behalf of myself and all of Healthy Beginnings staff, happy summer! Pause. he common garden beet, also known as beetroot or beta vulgaris, is part of the Chenopodiaceae family. Other than the deep purple vegetable most of us recognize, the beet family is filled with diverse plants including leaf vegetables, like chard and spinach beet; as well as other root vegetables, like sugar beets, which are important in the production of table sugar. Beets are also amazingly healthy. They are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; they support detoxification as well. For some, beets could potentially identify a deficiency in their diet and/or metabolism. Beeturia, a reddening of the urine after an everyday consumption of beets, could indicate an issue with iron metabolism. Some studies show that individuals with iron deficiency, iron excess or specific problems with iron metabolism, are more likely to experience beeturia than individuals with healthy iron metabolism. Regardless of the reason for adding beets to your plate, check out the beet soup recipe in this issue; it is tasty and packs a healthy punch! HB

Dealing with Rapid Ejaculation Written By Dr. Tory Clark
R
apid Ejaculation (RE) is the most common sexual difficulty among men. About 44 percent of men experiencing erection issues also frequently ejaculate rapidly. In general, approximately 22 percent of men experience RE and about 30 percent of those men ejaculate without a full erection. The International Society for Sexual Medicine defines RE as a pattern of quick ejaculations (under one minute) combined with a man’s inability to delay ejaculation during vaginal penetration and with distress about, or avoidance of, sexual intimacy because of rapid orgasm.
The aforementioned techniques are proven to be highly effective, over time, for many men experiencing RE. However, the same techniques do not work for everyone, and activities need to be tailored to the individual. Sexual counseling may be sought when individual or couple efforts do not help resolve the concern. Increasing one’s self-knowledge is a very important step towards sexual enhancement. HB References:
Performance anxiety is one of the main sources of RE. For example, if a man’s partner makes negative comments about performance, it may lead to RE. Additionally, inhibitions, guilt and fear associated with negative childhood sexual experiences (e.g. masturbation) can play a role in RE. Therefore, reducing or eliminating this anxiety is the focus of sex therapy. A common belief within our society is that touching is intended to lead to an erection, intercourse and then ejaculation. This is very goal oriented; which leads to pressure and then anxiety.

Steggall, M., Fowler, C., & Pryce, A. Combination therapy for premature ejaculation: Results of a small-scale study. Sexual Health and Relationship Therapy. 2008.
An extremely helpful couple-oriented activity developed by Masters and Johnson called “sensate focus” involves focusing and enjoying touch without a further goal. The couple explores what kind of genital stimulation, other than penetration, is pleasurable for the man, through great communication. This non-goal-oriented approach gives a man and his partner the opportunity to focus on what they feel rather than on their sexual performance. Also, not having to focus on sexual activity helps to alleviate performance pressure: the aim is to make sexuality something separate from performance anxiety, inhibition and guilt (the emotions surrounding being sexual).

Another activity called the “stop-start technique” enables a man to become more aware of his ejaculatory reflex. Through masturbation, or with the assistance of a partner, the man’s penis is stimulated to the point of impending orgasm and then stops until ejaculatory sensations subside. The activity is repeated several times and then allows ejaculation to occur on the last cycle. Other techniques involve ejaculating more frequently, changing sexual positions and continuing sexual interaction after the first ejaculation. June 2011

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

Tips for Starting a New Business Written By Shannon John, Marketing Manager, Laughlin Associates, Inc.
I
f you recently lost your job, or have always dreamed about being your own boss, you may be getting ready to take matters into your own hands by starting your own business venture. Naturally, this is a risky proposition, especially during these turbulent times. Here are some practical suggestions to help you succeed: • Be realistic. Don’t expect your business to be immediately successful. In fact, you should be prepared, both mentally and financially, for the worst-case scenario. Recent statistics from the Small Business Administration (SBA) show that about one-third of new business startups fail to make it through two years; and over one-half fold after four years. Give your business time to grow and prosper. • Minimize the risks. Even if you’re encouraged by the initial results, don’t tie your fortunes completely to this undertaking. If you’re still gainfully employed somewhere else, keep the job and operate the new venture as a sideline business. If you’ve taken a package from your current employer but want to launch a new career with a new business, make sure you establish some barriers for asset protection first. You have a lot to lose and making sure you protect your personal assets should be part of your business plan.
Protect Your Business Today Learn how a Corporation or Limited Liability Company can immediately improve your bottom line and give you peace of mind. Call for your free book today!
• Choose the proper form of ownership. Depending on your circumstances, it may be best to operate the business as a C corporation, a partnership, an S corporation or a limited liability company (LLC). • Carve out a niche. Your business should fulfill a specific need that is difficult for chain stores or other broad-based businesses to meet. In other words, if you try to compete directly with the corporate giants, you’re likely to lose. HB

Q U A N T U M BIOFEEDBACK: HEALING WITH TH E M A G I C O F E = M C 2 Written by Mary Sutton
A
waken to your highest health and healing potential, and to your utmost athletic performance ability with cutting edge technology! Consider quantum biofeedback if you have tried traditional health approaches but are still experiencing symptoms from an injury or illness or suffering from chronic pain, stress, headaches, spinal cord and nerve injury, bone or immune system issues, attention deficit disorder, skin problems, hormonal imbalances, high blood pressure, addictions, allergies and more! Quantum biofeedback retrains your body energetically and is bio-energetic therapy at its finest. It is based on science, the quantum theory, on E=mc2, on math. Quantum physics is providing new ways of measuring and verifying the energetic affects of health, disease, injury and emotions on the body. The result is the emergence of the exciting and “mind blowing” field of subtle-energy medicine. The Electric Body. The quantum theory replaced the old Newtonian theory, which opened the exciting world of bio-energetics. The quantum theory revealed that everything is made up of atoms, which are pure, invisible energy. Our bodies are indeed electric and every cell, organ, virus, bacteria and emotion emits its own energy frequency. The physical body and the mind energy frequencies are entangled and have a complex intercommunication system that affects and makes up the whole. You have your own unique energy signature, different than anyone else’s, due to the collective energy frequencies of your body and your mind! Injured cells and tissues, as well as negative emotions, emit different energy frequencies than healthy cells or emotions. Stress & Imbalances. A change in normal body energy frequencies is considered a stress, which in turn can cause an imbalance in the system. Stress occurs for many reasons and can come from many sources such as trauma, toxicity, pathogens, mental factors, allergies, habits, spinal alignment problems, and imbalances in mineral, vitamin and hormonal levels, dirty electricity and more. Stress results in erratic energy frequencies causing imbalance in the body, which can eventually affect your overall health. Reducing the stress associated with these above conditions promotes healing and health. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
Traditional vs. Quantum Biofeedback. Traditional biofeedback is a heavily researched technique that trains subjects to alter brain activity, blood pressure, muscle tension, heart rate and other bodily function that are not normally controlled voluntarily. Feedback regarding the subject’s response is given via sensory or auditory stimuli. It takes work and effort, on the part of the subject, to get results using traditional biofeedback. Quantum biofeedback is a non-invasive, sophisticated technology that energetically scans your body for stress and imbalances, on many levels. This process is not felt and takes only a few minutes, occurring through a head harness and wrist/leg straps. Normal energy frequencies can then be delivered back into the body to reduce stress and to retrain and balance the body and mind. A complex computer program gives instant feedback on the body’s response to training. Training occurs with no conscious involvement on the client’s part, and it can occur at much deeper levels than traditional biofeedback. Reducing stress and retraining the body-mind complex helps to maximize one’s healing potential and to promote health and well-being, physically as well as mentally! Athlete Performance Enhancement. There are numerous quantum biofeedback sports programs that can benefit the athlete, not only in recovering from an injury but in preparing them both physically and mentally for competition. If you are recovering from an injury or have inflammation or pain that needs to be addressed, quantum biofeedback can reduce stress, retrain the body and help expedite your recovery so you will be physically balanced and ready to perform your best. There are also programs that assist with mental-emotional preparation and mental focus, reduce emotional stress and increase your overall chi energy, to name just a few. Quantum biofeedback is magical and it works! It was made possible by the advancement in computer technology, combined with scientific research in bio-energetics. There are thousands of quantum feedback systems being used world-wide in hospitals, clinics, and in homes with amazing results. China bought 2,000 units after the remarkable results achieved on their Olympians in 2008. It can help reduce stress and retrain the body on many levels, for a variety of conditions to accelerate healing. All you have to do is lie there, relax and feel the magic! HB 10

Diabetes Type II – What to do when medications don’t work? But did you know that these effects occur because the parts of Written By Dr. Martin P. Rutherford, D.C.
D
iabetes Type II has become the number one metabolic epidemic in the United States…and it’s due to more than just our lousy diets. Every cell in the body requires stable glucose to operate at maximum function. Indeed glucose is the only nutrient utilized by the brain and nervous system. We’re generally aware that Diabetes Type II is serious and can cause eye complications, neuropathy, skin conditions, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and kidney disease. But, were you aware that newer research is beginning to refer to Alzheimer’s as diabetes of the brain; and that it can contribute to insomnia and mental symptoms, such as anger, anxiety, and sadness before it results ultimately in depression? Standard treatment for diabetes is generally medication, diet modification (watch your carbs) and exercise. This protocol is often successful. When properly managed, most patients should not require medical intervention. But, what happens when medications, diet and exercise don’t work and your numbers stay high or worse, your numbers are “okay” but you still feel terrible and continue to experience diabetic symptoms and complications? Diabetes Type II is more complicated than “just” your body not producing enough, or having your cells reject, insulin. Your body is a highly complex system, with multiple organ systems being influenced by and in turn influencing blood sugar regulating mechanisms. A significant number of patients suffer from chronic pain syndromes (i.e. Fibromyalgia, Peripheral Neuropathy, Chronic Fatigue, Hashimoto’s, musculoskeletal pains), and almost all of them have in common an “uncontrolled” blood sugar condition as part of what is contributing to their unique pain syndrome. They’re on meds, watching their carbs, and some are exercising. Yet their blood sugar levels remain generally high, and their pain syndromes are getting worse. This is because there are other interrelated systems in their bodies that are not functioning well and not allowing their current diabetic protocols to work for them Diabetes Type II can lead to sadness, anger and depression. Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
the brain (frontal lobe) involved in their “symptoms” are not firing properly, and if that dysfunctional firing mechanism is not corrected, not only will your mental health suffer, but so will your diabetes and its many complications. That’s right, improper brain function can, and often does, affect your body’s ability to control sugar levels. However, that’s just one surprise to the diabetic sufferer in our clinic. Were you also aware that a hypothyroid or poorly managed Hashimoto’s thyroid will also prevent medication, diet and exercise from controlling your diabetes? The list goes on: Anemia, essential fatty acid metabolism and hemachromatoses, all will affect your ability to control your blood sugar. How about the gut: leaky guts, celiac disease, irritable bowel, Crohn’s disease, fatty and/or inflamed livers? All of those will negatively affect your diabetes. Wow! Where does one start? As you can see, it’s all interrelated--one body-not a bunch of isolated, independent parts. The number of factors that may be involved in the optimum control of your Type II Diabetes (and it is very worth controlling) are many. For the mild to moderate case medication, exercise and diet will be successful. But for the more complex cases, a comprehensive neurological evaluation of brain firing function and a complete metabolic exam and review are critical, especially if non-drug long term management, and avoidance of the deleterious effects of this very serious condition, is the goal of both patient and doctor. menthol or capsicum, various derivatives of salicylate, along with other drugs. While these may help, and some products contain a mixture which can enhance their effectiveness, they may be masking the problem, using chemicals that may or may not have long term or
others-to-be want to remain healthy, and obviously protect the health of their growing child. It sounds easy but it can often be difficult to tell what is safe, especially to control pain. During pregnancy, women have to balance the need to control muscle or joint pain without chemicals that might endanger the health of the child. From lingering pain; due to earlier injuries, to the normal aches; which affect various muscles or joints all over the body, Elmore Oil is a healthy, all natural product that is safe for moms and babies. Some pain medications claim to be the “least invasive” or the “least likely to harm,” and there are many choices. One class of pain relievers is taken orally. But, a pill has to travel through the bloodstream to get to the point of concern. Unfortunately, a chemical medication in the bloodstream may travel to many places that don’t need this type of pain relief, including the fetus. In most cases, under the right conditions, one or two pain relief pills will not cause any lasting harm. However, the problem is that the longer we take medicine into our bodies, the more likely they are to have unintended consequences. This may also apply to topical pain relievers as well. When rubbed in, they may penetrate the skin to work on the nerves that are sending signals to the brain. These tend to fall into a couple of main categories. One set contains an analgesic, which numbs the nerves. This essentially tricks the brain into believing the pain has gone away because there are no signals for pain. It isn’t that the problem is solved, but simply masked. When the nerves return to their normal state, the pain returns. Another group of topical ointments, gels and creams, can tingle the nerves so that the brain is distracted. These include products that heat or cool the skin so that the brain gets a signal that there is “hot” or “cold” from the nerve endings, and this “drowns” the pain signal so the brain concentrates on the heat or cold instead. Again, once the initial effect wears off, the brain realizes that the muscle or tissue is hurting. The oral group typically contains ingredients like aspirin, ibuprofen, or for more serious pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDS. The topical group contains ingredients like Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
unintended consequences. Elmore Oil is a natural solution. Named after a small town in Australia where it was invented, it is a special combination of four ingredients: eucalyptus oil, tea-tree oil (also known as melaleuca), olive oil (the base of the product) and vanilla oil. Both eucalyptus oil and tea-tree oil are natural anti-inflammatories. The process of combining the ingredients takes about eight weeks for its unique triple maturation process. The blend has proven to be a very effective pain relief solution, without any of the side effects that may occur with prescription products. The result is a product from natural ingredients that can penetrate the skin and reduce inflammation. Pain can be due to 90 percent inflammation, so reducing the inflammation reduces the pain. The vanilla helps with local circulation and the olive oil not only acts as a basis for the other ingredients, but keeps the skin soft as well. Elmore Oil can be an ideal solution for pregnant women who want a product that is drug free, can be applied topically and actually works. It could be one less thing to worry about as you consider your health and the health of your baby. Gallbladder Rescue
s organs go, the gallbladder isn’t the sexiest of organs. However, when the gallbladder and liver malfunction, a host of painful and unpleasant symptoms appear, which leads to the surgical removal of roughly 500,000 of them annually. GB disease symptoms include pain under the right rib cage; which can radiate to the back and the top of the right shoulder, fatty food intolerance, nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea and many bowel symptoms. No doubt some deserve to go, especially when the gallbladder (GB) is chronically infected with a thickened, dystonic (non-moving) wall and packed with stones. The prospect of GB perforation into the peritoneum is certainly dire. However, in my experience, for most GB’s with acute or episodic pain following fatty meals and mild or moderate disease, a rescue should be attempted. Over 25 million Americans have gallstones, with one million new cases diagnosed annually, according to the American Gastroenterology Association. Surgery is often not a walk in the park; with 40 percent of post gallbladder surgery patients still having symptoms of nausea, pain, gas, bloating, IBS, dumping syndrome, scarring and food intolerance. Gall stones also pack most of the biliary ducts in the liver, and go unrecognized in ultrasound and CT scans. When they are found, the diagnosis of a fatty liver is given; however, the bile obstruction is still present; which leads to malabsorption of fats and oils, as well as calcium and causing manifold digestive disturbances. In his compelling book, The Amazing Liver & Gallbladder Flush, Andreas Moritz, links these toxic livers and GB’s to over 67 different medical conditions, affecting every organ system in the body. Many health modalities have good things for the liver and GB. Herbs, antioxidant nutrients, anti- inflammatory nutrients, bile salts, pancreatic enzymes, organic diet avoiding trans fats, acupuncture, neural therapy, energy medicine, homeopathy, naturopathy, liver/GB flush, coffee enemas, chiropractic, topical poultices and castor oil packs, mood and stress modulation (Chinese medicine reminds us the emotion of an unhappy liver/ GB is anger), and many other approaches can be employed in the rescue. In 37 years of medical practice, I have only lost four or five GB’s to surgery. It was usually because the patient did not tell me they were having GB issues; or, a relative, nurse or doctor assured them that if they didn’t have it out, they would die. I am reminded of a 43 year old, prominent, Reno man who had a GB attack during dinner, at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco; and was laid out on the table with doctor relatives obviously concerned and pushing him to go to the hospital for surgery. For some reason, his pain lightened up a little and he called me. I recommended massage for his paraspinal muscles in the thoracic area, which immediately improved his pain. He was able to get home to Reno and apply a castor oil pack over his liver, which was very soothing and pain relieving. Castor oil packs were popularized by Edgar Cayce, the sleeping prophet from Virginia Beach, Virginia in the 1920’s, a medical Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

intuitive and psychic who made many accurate predictions for the future. His work is still promulgated by the Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) in Virginia Beach and other centers. Unrefined castor oil, also called the Palma Christi, contains resin from the castor bean, a counter irritant with marvelous lymphatic stimulating and pain relieving properties. The pack is made by pouring the castor oil on a diaper type flannel, heavier flannel or on an old wash cloth or piece of towel, and applying it to the skin over any painful area; which is then covered with a baggy or store plastic bag, and then covered with a hot water bottle or hot pad for 30 to 60 minutes. Of course, the GB is just below the right rib cage and the liver is above the right rib margin and extends across the midline above the left rib margin. Remember not to sleep with the hot pad, for fear of burns. Castor oil packs can be used on any place or joint on the body and are especially soothing for inflamed areas. They can be made into a Russian poultice around joints by wrapping them with an ACE bandage. During our initial appointment, I employed Neural Therapy, among others. He returned the next day with 50 percent of his pain resolved, even after playing golf; although, he didn’t use his driver. I repeated the Neural Therapy during our second appointment as well. He wasn’t very hungry and found the castor oil packs still extremely soothing. One week later, most of his pain subsided; he experienced an occasional twinge if he rolled in bed the wrong way. He was also eating more liberally. Another week later, he was 100 percent symptom free, and still is, nine years later. He loves to embarrass me when we see him at local restaurants, loudly proclaiming “There’s Dr. Gerber. He saved my gallbladder years ago.” HB References: 1.Torsoli A, Corazziari E, Habib FI, Cicala M. Scand J Gastroenterol Suppl. 1990;175:52-7 Pressure relationships within the human bile tract. That’s where many restaurants place the most profitable dish of that type. 2. Menu Siberia. Unprofitable dishes, on the other hand, tend to get banished to a corner that’s less noticeable. 3. Visual aids. Many menus box off something they want to promote, because if you draw a line around it, people will order it. Photos also sell dishes. 4. Package deals. Even if only a small percentage of the McDonald’s customers spend some extra dollars on a meal package, that translates to millions in additional revenue. 5. Dollar-sign avoidance. Some menus avoid dollar signs and decimals -- keeping money abstract makes spending less threatening. 6. The small plate-large plate conundrum. A restau rant may offer two sizes of the same dish; that price differential is almost pure profit. 7. Ingredient embroidery. BOOKREVIEW ANIMALS MAKE US HUMAN: Creating the Best Life for Animals
By Temple Grandin, Ph.D., and Catherine Johnson, Ph.D. Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt.
unique perspective regarding animals. Her tendency to think in pictures rather than words helps her to see things from an animal’s point of view. This book is firmly rooted in scientific research and is extensively footnoted. Her co-author, Catherine Johnson, Ph.D., is an author in the field of neuropsychiatry and brings that specialized background to this work. Most people will find the chapters on cats and dogs the most useful. She explains that the core emotions of animals are seeking, rage, fear and panic, plus three special-purpose ones: the sex drive, care and play. Dogs, she says, descend from families of wolves, not packs, and are looking for a parent, not an alpha. She says that horses’ fear and flight responses are the basis of their survival in the wild, and training them requires reassurance, not breaking.
D
She explains how to recognize emotional states in animals and gives advice on avoiding negative reactions. She says that all animals are frightened by, as well as attracted to, new things. It all depends on how it is presented, voluntarily or forcibly.
r. Temple Grandin draws on her own experience with autism, as well as her experience as an animal scientist, to give us extraordinary insights into how animals think, act and feel. In addition, she shows us how to give our animals the best and happiest life.
These chock-full chapters give specific information on the needs of dogs, cats, horses, cows, pigs, chickens, and even wildlife. It’s very obvious that Dr. Grandin has a deep love for animals. She became not just a voice for the world of autism, but also an interpreter between animal and human worlds. Any person who works with animals, whether it’s a pet owner, horse lovers, people who work on farms--anyone who works with animals on a daily basis will love this book and come away with an enriched knowledge of how animals think and why they react to certain stimuli the way they do.
The author spent almost 30 years working on improving the treatment of animals, whether they are in shelters, are destined for slaughter, or are your beloved pets. She explains how animals are sensory-based thinkers; that they think in pictures, in sounds, in touches. There’s no other way that their brains can store these memories. In this book, Dr. Grandin identifies the core emotional needs of animals, and then explains how to fulfill the specific needs of dogs and cats, horses, zoo animals, farm animals and even wildlife. She explains how to create a healthy environment for the dog you have to leave alone most of the day, how to keep pigs from being bored (pigs are extremely intelligent) or how to tell whether the lion pacing in the zoo is exercising or is just plain miserable. She shows us that our assumptions about animal contentment may be wrong.
This book, as well as her book Animals In Translation, were bestsellers across the country. Other books by Dr. Grandin are Emergence: Labeled Austistic; Thinking In Pictures, Genetics and the Behavior of Domestic Animals; Developing Talents and Humane Livestock Handling. HB

THE DEADLY TRIAD: ABUSER, VICTIM
AND RESCUER
Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
I
t may seem unusual to label the rescuer in this triad as part of the problem; but the triad is a vicious cycle, and cannot exist, particularly in one’s mind, without the rescuer. When the victim moves through the need to look outside of him/herself for rescue, and instead look at one’s own choices to find the cause of the imperfect situation, then he/she ceases to be a victim, and begins to take on personal responsibility and therefore personal power. An example is an abusive relationship. The person who is being victimized sees some reason to stay and continue to be abused. It may be because of low self-esteem, or the perception that it’s impossible to make a living outside of that particular relationship, or for any number of reasons. The victim, which is most often a woman, may fantasize about a rescuer: a knight on a white horse, who comes and carries her away from the abuser. Or she may look to the abuser to change his personality, and cease the abuse. In effect, that is expecting the abuser to be the rescuer, and in most situations, that’s not likely to happen. We all have free will, which is the freedom to choose; and we all continuously choose every day, even if it’s to choose not to choose. We are so free we can choose bondage, because there is always someone willing to make choices for those people who are unwilling to make their own. Always remember that the law of attraction causes the victim to draw, to his/her experience, those who have a like consciousness but are on the other side of it; like the two sides of a coin. Those who feel abused draw to themselves those who will provide more of that experience until that attitude is shed. Have you noticed that victims of dysfunctional relationships hang out together? They discuss their abusers and commiserate with each other, focusing their attention on what they don’t want and therefore attracting more of the same. To get away from that energy, you have to stop talking about it and stay away from others who consider themselves “abused.” When you change your thoughts and your story, you’ll be attracting different kinds of people, Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

neither abusers nor the abused. You’ll begin to come into your own power. Then no rescuer is needed. Maybe assistance in the form of mental, emotional or even financial support for a time, but assistance is very different from rescue. Assistance is empowering. Rescue is disempowering.
personal decision to take the consequences of their own decisions. There will always be abusers as long as we see ourselves as victims. When the victim consciousness disappears, and we make the effort to stand up for ourselves, abusers will simply not have anyone to abuse.
Another example is the economy as abuser, you as the victim. That’s an attitude that is very widespread right now, and most are expecting the abuser to turn around and be the rescuer. If people would spend only one tenth of their time thinking and talking about how they can do things differently than they did in the past, and therefore look at different ways of creating income, they would be attracting ideas that could create prosperity. But when you continue to talk about how bad it is, and tell the same old story, you continue to attract situations which will prove to you how bad it is. Law of attraction is an equal opportunity law. You get what you think, believe and expect. If you tune into 98.6 on the radio, you’ll not receive 101.2 because the vibrational frequencies don’t match up. If lack and limitation thinking is 98.6 and prosperity is 101.2, then prosperity will whiz right on by you, and be received by someone who’s expressing possibility thinking. Once we realize that this is a vibrational universe, and we get only what we’re attracting through our invisible thoughts, beliefs and expectations, our lives will quickly change for the better.
It seems that human consciousness is in the process of experiencing quite a transition right now. Things are coming together in a way which we could not have consciously orchestrated, and yet it can all turn out magnificently positive if we begin to take responsibility for what we think, believe and expect. As we turn off the programmer (TV) and begin to let go of that constant drumbeat of fear and bad news, we can re-program ourselves to be empowered, maybe for the first time in our lives. How can human consciousness rise to a higher level if we think of ourselves as victims? It can’t happen. So let go of the deadly mental habits of living as a victim or rescuer, and by letting go, take charge of your own life and your own level of consciousness. HB References: 1. Hicks, Esther and Jerry. Have you noticed how many times a rescuer becomes the victim? Take the example of children in a family who become addicted to drugs or alcohol. The family panics and gets together all their resources to send that child to a rehabilitation clinic, trying to rescue him/her. Many times, the addict may not have made the choice to quit, so after the rehabilitation time, they go right back to drugs. Who’s the victim now? The rescuers have become the victims, as they borrow against their home or borrow from relatives, to send that child back again for more rehabilitation. What’s the answer? Think about it. I’m sure it will occur to you immediately. Why don’t you do it? Because the influence of government, religions, education, media, the culture/society or your friends/extended family say do this or do that. Is society paying your bills? Are your friends paying your bills, and will they take responsibility for their advice? It is time to make your own decisions, not let someone else make them for you. The book entitled, Don’t Let Your Kids Kill You: A Guide for Parents of Drug & Alcohol Addicted Children explains how you can learn not to be a victim, not to be conned and not to feel guilty. Take up the mantle of responsibility for your own happiness and stand forth in your own power.

could eat without problems a few years ago, now gives you indigestion. When the food does reach the stomach, a protein digesting enzyme called Pepsin is released. After being processed in the stomach this nutrient rich, acidic bolus of chyme is moved along by peristaltic action to the small intestine, where it is alkalized by the pancreas and more digestive enzymes are introduced.
common misconception is that acid reflux is caused by too much acid in the stomach. Actually, it can be because there is too little acid in the stomach. Most commonly, though, it is a result of a sluggish digestive tract. The food becomes over acidified and basically overflows back up the esophagus. Acid reducing drugs prevent this from happening, but as anyone who has acid reflux knows, they work only as long as they are taken regularly; and the problem returns when the drugs are stopped.
Acid reflux occurs when food sat too long in the stomach, becoming overly acidic; when there are too little enzymes produced to properly process the food, or there is too little hydrochloric acid and pepsin to properly finish breaking down the food. Cooked and processed foods contain very little, if any, enzymes; which inhibits the digestive process.
Over time, the esophagus can become damaged from the presence of acid, causing a constricted feeling after eating, as if the food won’t move down. The only long term solution to the problem requires more than just taking a medication. Cleansing, along with diet and lifestyle changes, not only make eating enjoyable again, but can also improve other physical aspects of the body.
Another cause of acid reflux can be from improper food combining. Proteins and carbohydrates are processed differently in the body. Enzymes in saliva begin to break down carbohydrates, and the digestive process is begun almost immediately. Proteins require pepsin, which is released by the stomach. Therefore, proteins are not digested until they enter the stomach. When carbs and proteins are combined in the same meal, the body uses its enzymes and energy to process the carbs first, in sort of a “first come, first served” method. The more difficult to digest proteins are put “on hold” until the carbs are processed. By then, it is common that the digestive enzyme supply is depleted, as well as the energy allowance the body had in reserve for digestion. This is often manifested as that feeling after a meal, when you feel as if you have swallowed a brick, and/or have the
Most people believe that when you eat, the food you swallow is deposited into a pool of acid in the stomach. Eventually that happens, but first the food is “predigested” by enzymes. Nature intended us to eat a diet rich in raw foods, which are high in enzymes. It is also intended that food be chewed completely, meaning it should not be “chunky” when swallowed. Chewing food completely mixes the enzymes contained in saliva into the food, which then begins the digestive process. The body manufactures enzymes, but the amount of enzymes we produce decreases as we age. This might explain why the food you Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

desire to lie down and take a nap. Proper food combining is a method of combining foods in a meal that will compliment and enhance the digestive process. People often report significant improvement in they way they feel following a meal after they begin practicing food combining, including less acid reflux.
Do you have fatigue? Constipation? Cravings? Weight problems? Are you overmedicated?
Colon Hydrotherapy can help.
Cleansing the bowel of impacted fecal matter also improves digestion, allowing for better transit time in the digestive tract. Colon Hydrotherapy is an extremely effective manner in which to improve digestion and metabolism. A clean colon efficiently removes toxins from the liver and bloodstream, and allows for better absorption of nutrients. Restoring the digestive tract to an efficient state, with the use of bowel cleansing, proper chewing and food combining, are some of the major steps in reducing unwanted conditions such as acid reflux. Adding the use of digestive enzymes to supplement the enzymes made by the body is also very beneficial. Aloe Vera juice or gel can be ingested in therapeutic amounts to sooth and heal an acid damaged esophagus. These fairly simple, yet extremely effective methods yield fast, long lasting results. Other benefits of cleansing, food combining and enzyme replacement can include weight loss, improved allergies and skin conditions, better sleep patterns and of course, more enjoyable meals. HB

Cancer Fighting Salads Fennel, Watercress and Orange Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette Servings: Serves 4
Ingredients • • • • •
2 large navel oranges 1 large fennel bulb, trimmed of stalks and fronds 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Citrus Vinaigrette • • • • •
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice, reserved from cutting orange segments 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper 2 large bunches watercress, stemmed, washed and dried (about 3 cups packed leaves),
Directions Cut off the top and bottom ends of the oranges. Stand an orange on one end and slice off the rind where it meets the flesh. Repeat with the second orange. Run a knife along the membranes that separate each section, pull off the orange segments, and set aside in a small bowl. Squeeze the membranes over a small bowl to extract the orange juice. Set aside 1 tablespoon of the juice and discard the rest. Cut the fennel in half lengthwise and cut out the hard core. Slice the fennel crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the fennel slices and cook, without stirring, until the undersides are lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Stir in the lemon juice and cook until the fennel is crisp-tender, about 1
minute. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to a dish and cool. To make the vinaigrette, whisk together the lemon, lime, and orange juices in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk in the olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Combine the fennel, orange segments and 2 tablespoons of the vinaigrette in a medium bowl. Toss gently and season with salt and pepper. Toss the watercress with the remaining vinaigrette and season to taste with salt and pepper. Place equal amounts of the watercress on 4 plates and top with the fennel-orange mixture. Serve immediately.
Ingredients Vinaigrette: • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon sugar • Celtic or sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon lime, peeled and zested
To prepare the dressing: In a small bowl, combine the vinegar mustard, cumin, and sugar; season with salt and pepper. Whisk to blend. While whisking, slowly drizzle in the olive oil, mixing until the vinaigrette is emulsified. Set aside. To prepare the salad: Fill a medium bowl with 2 cups of ice cubes and cover with cold water. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the asparagus and blanch until tender but not mushy, about 3 minutes. Drain the asparagus in a colander and transfer to the ice water bath to stop the cooking. Drain again and place on a paper towel-lined plate to dry. Cut the asparagus stalks into thirds. How’s Your Mental Health?
s there an optimal time to use feng shui? Yes, when you are selecting a home or business site, or choosing land to build on; whether it is a home, business or large scale development. Why? Selecting a property with excellent outside form allows you the greatest opportunity for success.
What did you do today to improve your mental health wellness?
Individual & Family
Outside form refers to the entire outside surrounding environment. Many do not understand the extent of influence that outside form has on people. When purchasing a property with correct outside form, you can alter the energy inside to make the structure even better. On the contrary, negative outside form can rarely be corrected, and nothing done inside can offset that.
Anxiety Depression Personality Disorders PTSD Sexuality Bipolar
For a home, a qualified consultant can help you choose a property that is conducive for positive health and prosperity. For a business, the right location equals long term success, strong management and a productive staff.

Feng shui is about energy and relationships. Just as you feel better when you have positive and healthy relationships with others, you will benefit when your outside form has a positive and enhancing relationship with your home or business.

Stand Up Paddeboarding: The benefits that defines your core muscle. Written by Mike Tessier
T
THREESUPERDIET:
he benefit of having a strong core, which is the foundation of your body’s strength, is being able to perform all powerful movements, beginning from the center of the body outwards. The core, or rectus abdominals, improves your posture and prevents injuries (it will save your back damn it). It also helps develop functional strength (Yes, that mighty strength I religiously speak about and what your fat bodybuilder buddies probably lack). This summer, you will have to perform an endless amount of crunches and sit-ups in order to build a six-pack...NONSENSE! Just go out and try paddleboarding; you will have the best time of your life and also strengthen your mid section at the same time, without being a slave of the gym and also, not to mention, release some stress…

ONEEXCERCISE:
The reason why I have been able to maintain my six-pack at the age of 43, without even doing countless sit-ups at the gym, is because I have incorporated exercises into my daily routine, along with my paddling workout routine; which recruit all of the muscle fibers of the body that hit deep within the muscle tissue. This is also vital for removing the annoying layer of fat that sits in the lower part of your stomach.
Sprints Intervals Long distance Yoga
TWODIET:
The second important thing you will need to do is to focus on a low caloric diet. Even someone like me has to watch his or her diet, if building a six-pack is the goal--something that I’m currently doing--because the fat will just build up, keep coming back and just sit there. Now, I don’t expect you to scale back on building your muscles, just in order to rip your abs to shreds. No, no, no! But what you should do is focus on eating the right foods for your abs and live an 80% – 20% lifestyle. HB Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

Cancer Vaccines A Whole New Approach to Treating Cancer
D
The immune system attacks things it recognizes as foreign. This recognition involves binding to very specific molecular sequences called “antigens.” These compounds on the surface of the foreign (tumor) cells stimulate what are called cytotoxic T-cells, which bind to the cells and send them a signal telling them to self-destruct. Once cytotoxic T-cells are activated, they will not only kill cells displaying the antigen they recognize, but they will also multiply. Cytotoxic T-Cells are activated by encounters with special immune cells called “Antigen Presenting Cells.” Dendritic cells are a type of antigen presentJune 2011

endritic Cell therapy represents a new and promising immunotherapeutic approach for treatment of advanced cancer, as well as for secondary prevention of cancer. The immune system is an astoundingly complex and wonderful system, perhaps second only to the brain in complexity and mystery. It has many different pathways, mechanisms, and feedback loops that enable it to recognize and destroy highly evolved invaders like bacteria, viruses and parasites; and sometimes, tumor cells, without destroying the normal healthy cells which make up your body.

ing cell created in a high temperature incubator in the presence of tumor cells, along with a specific kind of bacteria. Scientists at Duke University discovered how dendritic cells can be used as vaccines by mixing them with genetic material (tumor cells), incubating them, and then infusing them back into the patient. The dendritic cells present the tumor antigens to the body’s white blood cells (T-lymphocytes) for destruction. According to Dr. Harmon Eyre, Vice President of Research at the American Medical Association, “Patients’ responses [to dendritic cell vaccines] are far out of proportion to anything that any current therapy could do.” When BCG vaccine, a type of bacterial vaccine made from the mycobacteria family, is combined, and incubated, with the dendritic cell vaccine, it stimulates the lymphoreticuloendothelial system and results in stimulating increased resistance to, and attack on cancer cells. BCG has been shown to be a potent activator of NK (T-lymphocyte) cells. The mechanism of action by BCG is considered to be primarily that of stimulating and mobilizing of certain cells called macrophage cells. It stimulates them to produce interferon (a very potent imunostimulator), which in 27

Summer Daze:
The art of reading a bottle of Sunscreen
T
Written By Lissie Lyles
here is a lot of hooey when it comes to the fantastic claims on the labels of cosmetic products; and sunscreens have to be among the most confusing products to decode. With lots of long chemical and mineral names, big claims about SPF, UVB and UVA; lots of warnings about getting it in the eyes, rashes, seals of approval from this or that group, it can be overwhelming trying to choose a good sunscreen. Due to the FDA’s failure to update its sunscreen safety standards, which has not happened since 1978, it is very easy for sunscreen makers to include false claims on their labels and even worse, include dangerous ingredients that increase the risk of skin cancer, and disrupt hormones. Thanks to a team of scientists and researchers that comprise the Environmental Working Group, there is a Sunscreen Guide to help consumers distinguish quality from quackery. They tested over 14,000 sunscreens, for both safety and effectiveness. Here is a simple guide to healthy sun protection, and list of do’s and don’ts when sunscreen shopping.
zinc and titanium are reported to have the best safety profile, in terms of being ingredients that do not appear to penetrate the skin, while still providing UVA protection. A non-mineral ingredient that is still safe and provides UVA protection is avobenzone (at least three percent) but make sure it is not accompanied by nasty, hormone disrupting ingredients (see “Don’ts”).
Do:
• Sunscreen is not a substitute for responsible sun protection (mentioned above), nor is it an excuse to bake in the sun for hours. Don’t forget to reapply often.
Brands that meet the qualifications of UVA protection without the presence of toxic ingredients include: 1. Alba Botanica Mineral Sunscreen, Fragrance Free 2. Badger Sunscreen for Face and Body 3. COOLA SPF 45 Mineral Baby Moisturizer Unscented
Don’t:
• Remember that the best sun protection is still a hat, shirt, and staying in the shade, particularly at the hottest times of day. Staying hydrated helps too. Also remember that some early or late in the day sun exposure, (the AMA recommends 10 minutes a day) without sunscreen, allows you to absorb vitamin D; which is a vital nutrient from the sun’s rays.
• Spray-on and Powdered mineral sunscreens should not be used; due to the risk of dangerous metals and chemicals being absorbed into the body through the lungs. • Sunscreens that contain vitamin A or retinyl palmitate should not be used. Recently available data from an FDA study indicates that when applied to the skin, in the presence of sunlight, vitamin A may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions. The sunscreen industry adds this ingredient to 41 percent of all its products, so be on the look-out.
• Reapply sunscreen often, especially if you’ve been swimming, or in the sun longer than an hour. • Choose sunscreens that protect against UVB and UVA exposure. UVB radiation is what causes the skin to blister; while UVA is what releases free radicals in the body, contributing to melanoma and other cancers. Both contribute to rapid aging of the skin. Many high-SPF sunscreens have little to no UVA protection. •
• Products that contain hormone disrupting ingredients such as oxybenzone or 4-MBC should also not be used, especially on children. These ingredients have been found to have many toxicity and stability concerns, and are easily absorbed into the body.
Mineral Sunscreens (creams, not powders) that contain

The Marvelous Mint Family Written By Allison Prater
T
he mint family is varied and versatile, with a volume of hardy perennial plants. Whether used as a culinary delight, or a simple home remedy, members of the mint family are sure to be refreshing, giving you an enhanced feeling of vim and vigor. Most of us are familiar with the widely popular peppermint, and its cousin spearmint; but there are many other interesting members of the mint family. Peppermint not only makes for a delicious addition to sweet treats, but is also a gentle, yet effective medicinal tea used for a host of common ailments. It aids in digestion, relieves upset stomachs and prevents flatulence. No wonder after dinner mints are served. Peppermint tea is helpful in relieving menstrual cramping, discomforts of cold and flu, and insomnia. Peppermint oil may be applied to the temples for a headache, or added to bath water for sore muscles. The oil can also be applied to an aching tooth, or used to prevent bad breath. Crushed mint leaves will also soothe an insect bite, or bee sting. Spearmint and Curly mint are the most commonly used culinary mints. The flavor is milder than that of peppermint, enhancing meat and vegetable dishes alike. These two mints compliment eggplant, white beans, black beans, lentils, cracked wheat salads, fruit salads and beverages, creamy vegetable soups, peas, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, lamb, jellies, sauces, candies, and of course, chocolates. Chocolate mint does not actually taste or smell like chocolate, but the flavor reminds one of an after-dinner chocolate mint, and perhaps its dark, purple tinged leaves, aide in the suggestion. Not only does this mint especially pair well with chocolate, it is a nice addition to black teas and sweet breakfast pastries, such as banana bread. Apple mint and the white-egged lacy leaves of pineapple mint have subtle fruity notes. They are especially good choices for fruit beverages, salads, cream cheese and yoghurt. Corsican mint is often reputed to have the truest “mint” flavor, and is traditionally used to make crème-de-menthe. Bergamot mint has a sharp citrus flavor, famous for its contribution to Earl Grey tea. Its essential oil has a bright, uplifting aroma; a popular ingredient in soaps and perfumes, earning it the nickname, “eau de cologne mint.” Pennyroyal is the black sheep of the mint family. Its uses are mostly designated for medicinal purposes. Because of certain contraindications of Pennyroyal, especially those that recommend against its ingestion by pregnant women, it is the only member of the mint family that should not be taken without consulting a professional who is qualified to dispense herbs. Members of the mint family are easy to grow, so easy in Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

Mojitos are best made by preparing them in the glass they will be served in, so remember that the amount of mint, lime and sugar will be divided between the two glasses. Place the mint and half of the lime wedges in a small but sturdy glass. Use a muddler to crush them and release the oils and juices. Add the remaining lime wedges and sugar, muddling once more. Do not strain. Fill the glass almost to the top with ice, and fill the glass with coconut water. Garnish with lime and mint if desired. Begin by making a mint extract by placing about 40 small mint leaves in a cheese cloth, with 1/2 cup of apple juice, allowing the mixture to soak for 15 minutes. Then, wring out the mint leaves over the juice, repeating this process several times. Pour the remaining 3 1/2 cups of apple juice into a pitcher. Strain the leaves from the mint extract and slowly add the extract to the apple juice, one tablespoon at a time, tasting until a desired flavor is reached. Allow the pitcher to sit in the refrigerator 24 hours if possible, in order to let the mint flavor permeate the beverage.

The Four Cornerstones of “The Fountain of Youth”
I
s there such a thing as a “fountain of youth”? I believe there is, symbolically speaking, and the four cornerstones of it are: 1. Avoid sugar/fructose 2. Avoid grains 3. Exercise regularly and effectively 4. Tailor your diet to your nutritional type These four cornerstones have one thing in common, and that is helping you improve your insulin sensitivity. Aside from avoiding grains and sugars, exercise is one of the most effective ways to regain insulin sensitivity. And studies repeatedly show that regular exercise can help prevent or delay your onset of hypertension, obesity and heart disease, just to name a few of the diseases that significantly contribute to premature death. Not to discourage you as in my mind it is impossible to ever be healthy without exercising, but exercise has a relatively minor role in health and it is only responsible for 20% of your improvement. Most people believe the opposite and believe that exercise produces 80% of the benefit. They June 2011
work out like a maniac in the gym and are not as careful with their diet and they wonder why they don’t see any progress. The KEY to exercising for optimal health and longevity in particular, is incorporating anaerobic high-intensity, interval training. These types of exercises also promote human growth hormone (HGH) production, which is yet another important aspect of the longevity puzzle. Nutritional typing helps you modify your food choices to ensure you’re supplying your body with the exact fuel it needs to thrive, and in so doing, you give yourself the best chance of optimal health and naturally prevent diseases related to improper nutrition. Nutritional typing is also becoming increasingly recognized as a foundational factor in the successful treatment of disease, including cancer. HB Reprinted with permission by Dr. Mercola, Mercola.com

UNIVERSAL LAWS FOR PERSONAL & PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS
F
Written By Dale Halaway
or some, success comes easy and for others it has been difficult. Some have found the success they were looking for, and then proceeded to consciously (or unconsciously) sabotage it. The truth is, success is available to all of us, and we all deserve to have an abundance of it. It can be mastered by those who choose to live their life in alignment with Universal Law--a network of higher ground principles that point the way to a life of harmony, authenticity and simplicity. When we consciously use these higher ground principles in our life, we can transform and accomplish anything (as long as we are not imposing our will upon others). For these are the laws that govern our personal and professional success or failure, depending on how we choose to use them. We live in a Universe of Law and Order. These are definite laws that apply to every activity in life--the unseen forces that make or break every individual, and or company. An individual is positive or negative, happy or miserable, rich or poor, depending on how effectively they work with the laws of their own nature. These timeless laws are completely impersonal. Universal Law is here for us to use as we choose. The word “Universal” implies they are for everyone--applying to any and every situation in life. These laws are immutable. Whether we are aware of them or not, they operate 100 percent of the time--all the time--every time. The Law of Cause and Effect is just as real as the Law of Gravity. They include such laws as the Law of Discovery, Law of Manifestation, Law of Transformation, Law of Mental Equivalency, and the Law of Attraction. To better understand what causes success in our life, we will explore two principles in this article: The Law of Cause and Effect & The Law of Reflection. One of the multitude of ways in which the Law of Cause and Effect operates is that the energy we send out through our thoughts, words and deeds (known as cause), eventually returns to us in our everyday life experiences (known as effect). The Law of Reflection teaches us that our outer world (known as effect) is a direct reflection

of our inner world (known as cause). We never see the cause; we only see the effect, which loudly affirms the nature of its cause.
action is a thought.” Every so often, we pretend that we were the victim; we had nothing to do with it…it just happened. Success does not happen by accident and neither does failure. Things do not happen, as many people in the past have thought, they come to pass and are a result of conscious or unconscious beliefs, intentions, motivations, choices and habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and speaking. The energy we send out returns to us in the form of our own life experiences. In other words, whatever we habitually think, feel, say or do will eventually return to us in like manner. It’s the Boomerang Principle, “what goes around, does come around.”
If our tendency has been to deal with the effects in our personal or professional life, instead of seeking out and correcting the cause, then the effect will simply repeat itself. It must…it is Universal Law. Whether our experience is one of reoccurring headaches, or a repetitive pattern of high turnover in our business, there is a cause, a reason as to why it is happening, or it wouldn’t be happening. Every effect has its cause and every cause has its effect. In the case of healing a physical ailment, like reoccurring headaches, we need to acknowledge that the aching feeling felt in the head is an effect--not a cause. If you want the headaches to go away once and for all, you must identify and deal directly with the cause. Some have come to my seminars with a headache. I will help them to release the thoughts and feelings that were causing their head to hurt and the headache goes away.
Wisdom is knowing in advance what the effect will be of a cause. Your thought patterns and feelings live in the inner world of cause and are the seeds for future deeds. The only thing that will move you to a higher place in life is the quality of your thoughts and feelings. Raise the quality and vibration of your thoughts and feelings today and you’ll change your life for the better tomorrow. When we consciously choose words and deeds that bring happiness and success to others, the fruit of our karma becomes happiness and success. Discipline yourself to think kind thoughts when thinking of others. Thinking kind and positive thoughts causes you to feel better about you and your world. Remember, you are creating your future experiences with your most repetitive “NOW” thoughts. Learning how to release those thoughts you don’t want to have manifest in your day to day reality is the key. HB
Our attitude is a reflection of what’s going on within. A business that’s loaded with difficulties and hard times could be the effect of one’s negative thoughts, emotional imbalances, and insecurities, lack of direction and goals, or negative control dynamics that are motivated by some inner fear (the cause). These effects are great teachers. For when we operate our lives on higher ground, we recognize pain and dysfunction as a signal that is telling us something isn’t working. Life is our greatest teacher and it teaches us, by cause and effect. Our life consistently mirrors back to us what is going on inside of us--be it positive or negative, this is the Law of Reflection.

If we’re working in an organization and we’ve been silently thinking of and resenting the fact we are underpaid or that we are not appreciated; that we deserve more money or greater recognition; we are subconsciously severing our ties with that organization. The individual has set this law in motion and one day will experience the effects, which loudly affirms the nature of its cause and the operating manager/leader eventually says to this individual, “we have to let you go.” Actually, the individual let themselves go by their own repetitive pattern of self-sabotaging thoughts and negative feelings. It is our dominant thoughts and feelings that influence the quality of our words and actions. This is what Ralph Waldo Emerson meant when he said, “The origin of every

LYMPH FOR LIFE: Lymphatic Drainage Therapy Written By Jill Kennedy, Therapist
O
ur bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made! The body was created to heal itself; you know when something is wrong, but sometimes wait too long to respond to that “knowing.” The body gives us signs; edema (swelling), inflammation, accelerated aging, prolonged injury and illness recovery, and cancer. In 2003, my son was diagnosed with testicular cancer, and after the removal of the testis, they found the cancer had progressed to his lymph nodes behind his vital organs. I was clueless as to what a lymph node was and so my journey of discovery began. The Lymphatic System is the body’s primary immune defense and waste eliminator system. The Lymphatic System is one of the systems that affect everything in the body. When lymphatic fluid backs up, because of a blockage, pressure builds, which results in the whole system becoming toxic due to a lack of waste disposal. Detoxification is a vital part of any healing process, because it reestablishes free lymphatic circulation throughout the body. Only a detoxified body has power, resistance, and a potential for healing.
calcified vessels. The LBG can be used anywhere on the body where there is a problem; and because of its deep penetration, it can help heal organs and structures deep within the body, as well as skin problems. Treatment indications are eczema, acne, tissue congestion from injuries, breast conditions, PMS, Sinus, swelling and bruising with edema, fibromyalgia, and sciatica. They are currently testing on prostate cancer and macular degeneration. No, this is not a cure all; but it does offer the ease of balancing your electromagnetic field within a few minutes, allowing the body to enter a tranquil state that can be felt from the very first use! Our bodies contain over 600 collection sites, called lymph nodes (filters), and have a network of collecting vessels more extensive than the venous system. In healthy, living tissues, protein structures are in a state of alignment; but when cells die or become damaged, these protein structures break down. Cells can clump together and bond electrically with water to create disease conditions of swelling or abnormal growth. When the Lymphatic System becomes congested with these dead cells, other body systems that rely on it for waste removal will also become compromised, setting the stage for pain and disease.

I found Manual Lymphatic Massage gave temporary relief, and then I learned of the Light Beam Generator (LBG). The LBG uses extremely low-current and negatively charged light photons that help restore the cells normal energy state. The correct charge is put back into the cells, so they can separate from each other and their accumulated fluid, allowing the body to heal itself more readily. The effectiveness of the LBG is due to stimulation of the lymphatic system, by opening sealed and June 2011

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK
vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis
Horoscope for Health | June - 2011
J
une is the solstice--the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest day in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s one of the biggest turning points of the year, and how quickly it arrives. Here up north, it seems like just yesterday that we were snowed under by perpetual winter. As the Sun moves into the sign Cancer on June 21, it immediately aspects five outer planets--in order: Neptune, Uranus, Chiron, Pluto and Saturn. While we could say this represents yet another wakeup call, this one looks more like wake up and express yourself. Awareness is a cause and not an effect; the result would be more like taking a step toward openly shining out for who you are. Some influences will provoke you, and others feel more like an open flow of inspiration. If you allow one to lead to another, you’ll make many discoveries, in particular how flexible your creativity can be. Aries (March 20-April 19) You’re going to learn how to feel safe amidst all of the unpredictability of your life; that’s a given. To do that, your concept of ‘safe’ has to change. From one perspective, safe means free from any sense of threat, change, disturbance or instability. Yet that’s not what your chart is about at the moment. It’s about learning to hold your center even as you’re confronted by inner upheaval, complex relationship situations, high goals and deep aspirations. Most people would rather sit on the couch and chill. You don’t have this option. Safe for you translates to adaptable, aware and one who takes pleasure in rising to the occasion of life. Yes, somewhere in there is making sure that you have a home base. But it’s a place to advance from, more than it’s a place to retreat to. Taurus (April 19-May 20) You seem to be having a kind of psychological crisis over your finances, without recognizing how much you have going for you. Money is the tool and not the goal; you are the thing of worth, rather than it. The crisis involves having several sets of values going at the same time. You can make this work for you, say, by having a set of ideas that relate to separate situations in your life. It can just as easily become a source of conflict, where priorities from one aspect of your life, or time in your life, conflict with something more important. Indeed, of all the issues on which you tend to be divided against yourself, money is first among them. I suggest you take this opportunity to reconcile your values systems. You don’t need two. You need one. Gemini (May 20-June 21) Love and anger are often presumed to be bedmates, but one excludes the other. When anger is present, how is there room for love? When love is present, anger fades from importance and disappears into forgiveness. Remember that as you move through life this month. Remember as you consider whether you have “divided feelings” about someone. It’s Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
more likely that your feelings about yourself are in conflict, and you’re missing something obvious about someone you know you care about. It would seem that you’re not quite noticing someone’s benevolence because you’re only seeing your own feelings. I suggest you apply logic to the situation: if you have concerns about someone, look at their track record. Look for actual evidence of their intentions. Ask if your outdated ideas about life are clouding how you see the world now. They don’t have to. Cancer (June 21-July 22) This is the moment to meet life face to face, at full strength. I don’t mean that in terms of drama and conflict, but rather as making contact with your inspiration, with your highest goals and with how deeply certain individuals in your life influence you. Remind yourself how much you influence the people around you--open your eyes and you’ll see that this is obvious. Think of all of these potentials, not as externals but rather as extensions of yourself. Your creativity is a magnet for human contact. Your passion will drive your success. Your ideas will inspire your whole life--and many people around you. Your happiness is not yours alone. As you improve your life and follow your heart, many around you will see and be inspired by that light. Start with happiness and then focus on cooperation. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Think of yourself as a good luck magnet and that’s what you’re likely to be. This works for you, and for anyone you associate with. There’s a protective quality about you, and some element that has the ability to manifest good is a kind of rare fortune. This is not a passive thing about you; rather, there is something in the active process of your thinking, observing and synthesizing facts that adds up to much more than is obvious on its face. Work with that--let’s call it the intuitive factor. There will be times that you just know something, or a method, or a solution; you’ll have ideas that seem to come from nowhere special. You don’t need to account 36

the source to anything more than an open mind and loving intentions. It’s not an accident that those things get actual results.
levels, and there seems to be no shortage of people available to exchange energy. You’ve long lived your life based on identifying what you need. Now is the time to notice and act on what you want.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You say you don’t like too much public exposure, but I suggest you grease yourself in SPF and take your place in the spotlight. What you have going for you is a communication gift--the ability to express or explain in clear language something that others have a hard time getting out. You can not only see, but integrate, both sides of a seeming polarity. You can do this because you know you embrace within yourself the opposites that others perceive as inevitable. This has something to do with gender; it has something to do with acknowledging that you’re not at odds with the world around you, but rather an integral part of it. These things are easy for you to see, and you often take that fact for granted. It’s a lot more challenging for others--and you have the ability to make it clear.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Notice the influence that you have on people. I’m not suggesting you accept my theory on its face; I’m proposing that you observe people, and listen to what they say about how they feel about you--and why. As for the ones who don’t say anything, observe them carefully and listen between the lines. At the moment, and for the foreseeable future, you’re a kind of evolutionary flywheel, with momentum that can carry many people along. Yet to appreciate the full benefit of that, I suggest you notice the special intensity of your growth process now, and how many people are trying to plug into your energy to get a little of what they think they lack themselves. Be flexible. Let go of your opinions based on what has happened before. This is actually a new moment in history.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Saturn has been in your sign for a while, and it’s been retrograde for most of the year. You may feel as if plenty of life has passed you by. It hasn’t, and now that Saturn is returning to direct motion, you don’t need to catch up. What it would be very good to do is let go of certain elements of the past that you’re holding onto. I’m talking about the ones that you haven’t noticed. They might show up as traditions or rituals; they might appear as nostalgia or a tense relationship to change. Clearly, you want to make progress, and progress is about updating your files and living in the present. You’ll have many opportunities to do that in the coming weeks, and if at any time you’re experiencing confusion or struggle, bring yourself into the actual moment in which you’re standing. That is where your power is.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Treat your life as a wild experiment. Figure out what that notion might have meant to you right up until this moment, and then devise a way to go over that little hump. The experiment of your life is about stretching who you are. That’s a question of gender; it’s a question of what you say, and exploring the impact that it has on people; and it’s about stretching your idea of what you think of as fun. Things that you were sure would be fun for others but could never be fun for you might seem especially attractive. There’s a little something about swinging both ways. In the background of your experiment is a shift in attitude about what you think is possible. The experiences in relationships that seemed improbable, impossible or out of your league, are suddenly looking pretty real. They might even be.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) Suddenly, a relationship is showing a lot of promise. Looked at another way, you have many options, and you may not want to limit yourself. Those are not contradictory values. Indeed, the idea that they conflict is the value that gets in the way of everything else. Be on the lookout for any situation that has the mark of ‘do or die’. Beware of any circumstance where you might think, “if I do that, then this is the inevitable result.” The chances are you want that result but are afraid to admit it to yourself. Your charts suggest that you have impressive attractive power. Like many people, that can worry you, if you wonder: what if I act on a possibility and then live to regret it? That is what I would call starting from a place of regret, when adventure is the very thing that is calling you.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Keep your energy flowing. Whether it’s with physical activity or some kind of especially strenuous mental exercise, keep moving. You may encounter resistance. Pisces, the most ethereal sign, has a natural antipathy to anything that is physical, and what is rational can take some getting used to. Push both of them a little more every day. Stretch your potential. Feel yourself make progress, and observe all of your emotional inconsistencies as you work through them. By the end of the month, I propose that you’ll have the distinct feeling that great things are possible--greater than you ever imagined. If there is one factor on which your success depends, it’s accepting parts of you that seem to be in opposition. They’re not, really--they have the same goal, but they do things different ways. HB
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) What attracts you to someone? This is often a complicated issue. There seem to be two distinct ways your mind perceives desirability. One is mental clarity, a kind of gymnastic talent of the intellect. You’re definitely someone for whom the brain is a sex organ. The other quality that draws you in is nourishment and compassion. Now, while mental agility has its place, your point of sexual contact is more typically the nourishment attribute. But is that still true today? At least ask the question. These days you are at a kind of maximum compatibility with others. You can relate to people on many different June 2011

weat the end of the school year is coming and that means my spring soccer season is also ending, which is sad but good. I am trying out for a competitive soccer team! I am working harder every day, doing exercises and practicing shooting goals, along with other practices I do with my soccer team. I have to try out for the competitive team and I am planning on making the team, or at least I am working hard to get on the team. Do you have any sports going on during the summer? It seems that most kids do not participate in sports; more than half of my friends don’t. I feel that being involved in sports is good, and keeps you active. It teaches kids at a young age to work hard and work out, to keep in shape. Just remember that when you do work out, make sure to stay hydrated. When I play soccer, I need to drink lots of water, especially on hot days. If you don’t have any plans this summer, try to keep active, and not just sit around the house all day. You could go swimming, hiking or bike riding; or maybe get into a sport or something else active where you can be outside and enjoy the summer! Check out activities through your local clubs, organizations or the city’s park and recreation department. Here’s a quick summer recipe that is healthy and delicious: Yogurt cup with fruit. You will need plain yogurt, and any ripe fresh fruits of your choice. Take a bowl and put your desired amount of yogurt into
Kayaking through Siberia, Part 6 Upstream from Krasnoyarsk, the river snakes through mountainous terrain. Vladimir had taken me there the day before, as far as the Lenin Dam and power plant. Now, the landscape flattened out. Here and there I passed laid-back villages. Occasionally, I saw folks fishing from the shores. Towards evening, I pitched my tent across the river of one of the settlements--my first night in this enchanting world. I had just taken off the next morning when it began to rain. I was well prepared for that. My raincoat covered the top of a rain skirt, which was tied around my waist and protected the opening of the kayak. My hands stayed warm and dry in rubber gloves. The visor of my cap extended from under the hood and kept the rain out of my face. It was actually thrilling to paddle in comfort through the pouring rain. I felt even greater exhilaration when the river picked up speed passing through a canyon. Houses are built out of wood. Weather has turned them gray. On a cloudy, rainy day like this, the villages I passed appeared drab and deserted. Only a few sturdy souls stuck it out and kept casting for fish from the shores. Sunshine the next day made the world look so much friendlier. By early afternoon I came upon two fishermen in a boat, emptying their nets. When they saw me approach, they stopped what they were doing and headed towards me. “You are the German kayaker I saw on television last night. Here, you must have some of these fish,” said one of them. And with that he grabbed a dozen fish, placed them in a sack and forced them on me. “Please,” I responded, “I can not eat that many. Three are plenty.” I was powerless against the insistence of the man. HB

Dr. Edna J. Carver: Pioneer in Natural Therapies Written By Rebecca E. Willis
D
r. Edna J. Carver operated Steamboat Hot Springs in Reno as a Sanitarium (or health resort) from 1919 until her death in 1954. Curiosity has been triggered as to why Steamboat was one of the famous healing spas of the first half of the 20th century, drawing clients from around the world. A statement found in Dr. Carver’s personal papers reveals her approach to healing: A healing is more than a bringing of flesh and bone and nerve and blood to a state of soundness and regular action. Unless there is accomplished a change more fundamental than these, the seeker of health is defeated in his quest. She was a life-long student of metaphysics, and clearly believed that a healing of spirit played an important role in healing of the body. Examination of the movement in which she participated reveals that spirituality was a common thread among the pioneers whose approach was strengthening the body so it can heal itself, rather than the treatment of disease. Steamboat services included hydrotherapy, in both private geothermal tub rooms and indoor pools; mud wraps, massage, a geothermal steam room, a five room hotel, and a dining room, serving health food. The conditions treated included arthritis, digestive problems, liver and kidney problems and hyperacidity, along with a number of other ailments. Dr. Carver was an

Osteopath and designer of the treatments offered. Although the records indicate that she had a small pharmacy, letters and statements from clients all stress use of the baths and drinking mineral water. Dr. Carver was a student of the other major natural healing facilities of her time, and it is safe to assume her treatments follow a similar approach. The therapies of two primogenitors of this movement were well documented. First is the Sanitarium at Battle Creek Michigan. Battle Creek offered hydrotherapy, exercise, massage, salt glows, color treatments (called phototherapy) and colon therapy. Best known for teaching about diet, beginning in the late 1800’s, director Dr. John Harvey Kellogg advocated a diet low in fat and protein and high in whole grains. He was the inventor of corn flakes and authored 50 books on natural health. Dr. Carver’s papers include details on the Battle Creek diet, along with information on the dangers of aluminum pans and importance of alkalizing the system through diet. Another pioneering effort by Dr. Kellogg was to work for acceptance of massage as a therapy. His ground breaking book Art of Massage (1895) is still referenced and available today. Massage was a central therapy at Steamboat and Battle Creek. The second seminal location was the Health Institute of Dr. Harold J. Reilly, of Rockefeller Center in New York City. Dr. Reilly was a student of Dr. Kellogg, and the holder of eight college degrees. His clinic focused on physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, massage, exercise and diet. In 1930 a client came to him with a prescription for therapy contained in a reading by the psychic Edgar Casey. The reading specified Dr. Reilly by name, indicating the therapies he offered would fulfill the suggestions from Casey. After this first contact, Dr. Reilly continued to work with the therapies described by Casey in his readings for a number of years; and the list of famous people he treated includes many public figures and entertainers. Client Bob Hope quipped “Everyone should live the life of Reilly.” Few who quote this today understand that what he meant was a good diet, exercise and frequent massage. HB

Love Me Enough to Set Boundaries Written By Coach Carl, Founder of Every Child Healthy Network

hildren today are much different than when we grew up. Kids are different, the world is different, and therefore our parenting style needs to be different, for the empowerment and betterment of our children--and for us parents! Kids today need boundaries, and a compass to set sail with. They need to know and feel they can be themselves and still maintain a passion and desire for life--without upsetting their parents. They are going to push limits--they need to stretch who they are. Boundaries are NOT designed to control a child or their life, but to create a space of love, safety and self-expression and for children to explore their inner and outer world, and grow! Often, kids are punished for pushing boundaries; parents call them defiant. This is not always true! You want your kids to stretch their wings and push boundaries--within the realm of respect, of course. This is how they grow, how they realize who they are and what is possible in life. Most of all, it’s how they realize there are consequences, both positive and negative, to

their actions. Boundaries are created by the type of parent you are. Which of the three parenting styles do you fit into? Dictator: A dictator parent takes away the power for children to be responsible by yelling, telling, lecturing and deciding what the child will do and when. How can they be responsible and use their own brain, if you’re telling them what to do all the time? The dictator parent stands above their child, not by their side. Rescuer: “Why argue with my kids? I’ll just take care of it myself.” The rescuing parent takes responsibility for their child, fixes their daily life problems and messes, and then says, “I am Mom, that’s what good Mom’s do.” The rescuing parent stands between the child and the world, not by their side. Consultant: The consultant parent guides and partners with their child and keeps the child’s problems their problems, and offers solutions and choices. child is in danger or too young to know what to do. To create responsible, respectful and conscious children, children need a consultative parent who provides choices and leads by example, through healthy boundaries. Providing choices activates a child’s brain, causes them to “think” about the consequences, and makes them responsible for their choices. As a single Dad, I have set boundaries that my daughter loves and is accountable to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
The role of an outstanding parent is to NOT teach your child life lessons, it’s to consult with them so they GET their own life lessons. The more mistakes my child makes at home with me, the more responsible, respectful and courageous she will be when it comes time to enter the real world on her own. As parents, we are much more forgiving than the real world will be for them. So stand as your child’s greatest fan, greatest partner. With parents who have enough faith, trust and belief in them, children truly can “think” ahead of their actions, and choose wisely. What you can’t see, can harm you. Submitted By Catalytic PURE AIR LLC
O
n average, we take 24,000 breaths each day. That is close to 3,000 gallons of air, per day. Since we spend about 80 percent of our time indoors, it is important to know the contaminants that affect our indoor air quality, and health. These contaminants include: particulates: solid and liquid substances light enough to float in air such as dust, dirt, smoke and pollen, etc; biological contaminants: bacteria, viruses and molds; and, chemical pollutants: tobacco smoke, ozone from photo copiers, emissions from building products, cleaning products, nail polish, etc. Everyone is affected by poor indoor air quality, but persons with asthma, allergies, respiratory conditions and children are especially sensitive. Air purifiers offer a non toxic solution to improve our indoor air quality. With many health care products, it takes a long time to realize the benefits. But with a quality air purifier, you can start feeling the difference in minutes. The airborne contaminants are reduced, and you immediately begin breathing cleaner air. We are all concerned with the food and water we consume, but often ignore the air we breathe. Instead of removing the contaminants from the air, we use air fresheners or sprays, which add chemicals to the air, making it an even more toxic environment. Investing in an air purifier can really help your health, improve your environment and make you feel better. So, what is important to ask about an air purifier? 1) How much air does the air purifier move? The air needs to be moved to be cleaned. Ask for the cubic feet per minute (CFM) rating of the air purifier. For good quality air, you want four to six air exchanges per hour. Meaningful air flow is essential. 2) Which contaminants does the air purifier address? An air purifier should be able to remove all three major groups of contaminants. These groups are: particulates, biological contaminants and chemical pollutants. Ask yourself, “Where do the dirt, viruses and chemicals go? 3) What is the capacity of the filters? Find out the capacity of the filters. The more capacity, the better performance you will have and less frequency of changing filters and maintenance. It is important that filters are easy to change and allow for independent filter replacement. It is convenient if you can order replacements easily on the web. Is there an indicator light to let you know when it is time to change the filters? 4) What is the life expectancy of the unit? Check to see if the manufacturer has a good track record of units in the field, and a strong support system. Check the warranty and ask for a list of current satisfied customers. 5) Is the air purifier well built? Quality construction including excellent sealing is important. If there is bypassing around the June 2011

filters, contaminants are just getting a free ride around your environment. 6) Is the air purifier easy to use? An air purifier should be portable and convenient for the consumer to use. 7) Can the used filters be recycled? A recycling program shows that the manufacturer is concerned about making the world a greener place. 8) No ozone please! Ozone is dangerous and can have serious health effects. Check to see if manufacturer has any class-action law suits or complaints. 9) Is it possible to rent the air purifier? Some companies will offer rentals of air purifier units as an excellent option to improve you indoor air quality. Continued on Page 49.

Raising a Garden M
holes on both edges, spaced so that two of them would go into the end of the side piece, and two would go into the braces. Because the holes were already drilled, assembly of the beds went quickly. We only had to carry the four pieces to the proper site, square up the corners, and screw the pieces together. Next, I filled the boxes. Beth was unavailable for that chore--she said something about already having too many slivers. Because plants in a raised bed can be planted closer together than in a traditional garden, the soil needed to be rich. I started with a thick layer of old rotting straw, and I was happy to see earthworms in the mushy rotted parts. The straw will help keep the dirt from leaking out the bottom of the beds, and will release nutrients as it continues to decompose. Next I added a layer of dirt, then a layer of composted manure. Another layer each of straw, dirt and manure filled each box. The whole point of a raised bed is to make gardening easier, so I’ll put in drip line. Drip line is available in rolls, and the purchaser has options of emitter spacing from six inches up to four feet. If I were willing to change the hose in each bed every season as I rotated crops, I could match the emitter spacing with the spacing of the plants, which would save some water. I want the drip line to be permanent, so I’ll compromise on one-foot spacing. To turn these raised beds into temporary greenhouses, I can arch PVC pipe across the width of the bed. Ten foot pieces will give about four feet of clearance, and if I space them at two feet and run a piece of PVC along the top of the arch as a ridgepole, it will be fairly sturdy. Covered with clear plastic, I can extend my growing season. Covered with floating row cover, I can keep out pests. I like to do as much of my work as possible sitting down, so when time permits, I’ll attach a seating rail using two-by fours laid flat. Beth says two-by-twelve’s would be a more comfortable match for my dimensions. But that’s another fight. HB
y sister Beth and I were discussing how much more difficult some gardening chores seemed to be on our backs these last few years, when she offered what I thought was a non-sequitur. “Maybe you should try a raised bed,” she suggested. “I got over that mattress-on-the-floor thing years ago,” I said. “Besides, sleeping doesn’t bother me. Weeding does.” “Raised beds are for plants,” she explained. “They make gardening easier, and direct water and nutrients to the plant roots. Soil warms up faster in the spring, and stays looser, since children and animals stay out of the beds.” “And sisters,” I mentioned, remembering a size eight print in the sun-chokes I planted last fall. Fortunately she never heard that last remark, because I needed her help with the construction. Raised beds can be made out of nearly anything: tires, rocks, concrete blocks, recycled plastic lumber, or whatever else might be available. I chose two-by-twelve inch Douglas fir. Cedar or redwood would have doubled the life of the beds--and the cost. On the appointed day, the lumber yard delivered the wood, with the dimensional pieces cut to specs. I planned for four-foot-wide beds, a width which allows me to reach weeds in the middle of the beds. A person with a shorter reach might have made them narrower. The lengths varied to fit my garden design. I had the wood stacked in what I thought was a convenient place; close to the spot I wanted the beds. However, I didn’t choose the location of the lumber pile as well as I had thought: carpenter rule number one--do not stack the lumber on an ant pile. Construction of the beds was surprisingly easy. First, we cut two-by-fours in 11-inch pieces to brace the corners. We cut them just a bit shorter than the width of the lumber. We used deck screws to assemble the beds. Screws last longer than nails, and besides, I’ve never heard of anybody pounding her thumb with an electric screwdriver. First we prepared the long sides of the beds. We attached a brace to each end of the long sides. We made sure that they were flush with the end of the board, and did not protrude, since any protrusion could throw the bed off square. Then we prepared the end pieces by drilling four pilot Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

Round-up: The world’s Most
Noxious Garden Pest.
R
Written by Allison Prater
ound-up weed-killing spray and Genetically Modified Round-up Ready seeds are quite possibly the most threatening substances to the world’s ability to continue growing healthy food. While Monsanto, the makers of Round-up, claim that any damage caused by Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, is primarily sustained by the weeds it is intended to kill; with any remaining chemicals breaking down quickly in the soil, there is emerging evidence to suggest that the consequences of using Round-up may be devastating to plants, animals and humans alike. “Round up-Ready” seeds have been genetically modified to resist the weed killer. This means, if you plant a field of “Round-up Ready Corn” you can spray the whole field down with Round-up, and everything that is not corn, i.e. weeds, will die. As usual, there is a cost to this conscience-less convenience. Round-up essentially attacks the immune system of the plant, similar to how the AIDS virus affects humans. It makes the plant unable to protect itself against certain micronutrients in the soil. The overuse of Glyphosate created severe deficiencies in micronutrients normally present in healthy soil, and an over abundance of new organisms previously unknown to science. Recently, a team of US scientists discovered an organism associated with a rise in plant diseases in Round-up Ready corn and soybean crops, which are commonly used for animal feed as well. On January 17th of this year, internationally recognized plant pathologist Dr. Don Huber, a retired Colonel with over 50 years of experience studying plant diseases and who spent 35 years as a Professor Emeritus at Purdue University, wrote a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsak. In this letter, Dr. Huber warned Vilsak of the discovery of a new pathogen and a possible link between Round-up, Round-up Ready Seeds (RR), and severe reproductive problems in live stock and widespread crop failure. It is rare for an infectious agent to promote diseases in both plants and mammals. The pathogen was found in high concentrations in RR soybean meal and corn, fermentation feed products, distillers meal, pig stomach contents and pig and cattle placentas. The organism is prolific in failed crops in many US Midwestern farm lands that have been treated with the herbicide, or were planted with RR seed. Diseases such as Goss’ wilt for corn, and sudden death syndrome of soybeans were light-to-non-existent in non-GMO crops in the same area, but commonly observed in RR crops. Livestock that fed on the GMO RR corn and soy also saw an increase in infertility, miscarriage, still birth and other fertility issues. As a startling example, 450 of 1,000 heifers who were fed wheat grown and treated with Round-up experienced spontaneous abortions. Over that same period another 1,000 heifers from that same herd, who were raised on hay and not exposed to Glyphosate, had zero abortions--ZERO. Remember that humans are mammals too; June 2011
meaning that exposure to Glyphosate is not any less dangerous for us. In his letter, Dr. Huber charges, “It is urgent to examine whether the side-effects of Glyphosate use may have facilitated the growth of this pathogen, or allowed it to cause greater harm to weakened plant and animal hosts. It is well-documented that Glyphosate promotes soil pathogens and is already implicated with the increase of more than 40 plant diseases; it dismantles plant defenses by chelating vital nutrients; and it reduces the bioavailability of nutrients in feed, which in turn can cause animal disorders...We are now seeing an unprecedented trend of increasing plant and animal diseases and disorders. This pathogen may be instrumental to understanding and solving this problem. It deserves immediate attention with significant resources to avoid a general collapse of our critical agricultural infrastructure.” Dr. Huber requested a moratorium on the deregulation of further RR crops. These requests were ignored, and Round-up Ready Sugar beets and Alfalfa were approved by the U.S. Dept of Agriculture (USDA) a few months later. Instead of taking Huber’s concern’s seriously, they were ignored and attempts were made by the mainstream media to discredit and distort his research. Since then, Huber has released further evidence that was not yet complete or published, which support his claims, as well as research from other studies on GMO crops that have already been published in peer review journals. If the USDA and our own government refuse to take Dr. Huber’s claims seriously, we as conscious consumers still have the ability to vote against GMO crops and poisonous Monsanto products, every time we go to the store. Every time we purchase organic produce, we are eating food that has not been exposed to Glyphosate. When we purchase grass or pasture fed, organic meat and dairy, we are eating food that has not been exposed to Glyphosate. When we refuse to purchase or use Round-up in our own back yards, we not only protect ourselves and our loved ones from Glyphosate, but we protect our neighbors from exposure as well. If we as business owners refuse to carry Monsanto’s products, we are doing a great service to our community. As responsible citizens, we must declare that Round-up and Round-up Ready crops can have no place in our gardens until we can be satisfied that they do not pose such dangerous risks on our food system. For more information about what you can do to aid the effort to ensure a more sustainable food system, see the links below. “HB Magazine is a great source for everyday healthy living. The first time I opened HB, I found something I could use to make my daily life healthier. Just last month, I learned about posture (I have since taped the article to my desk). I really enjoy reading a magazine that doesn’t tell me how I need to buy more expensive clothes, wear more makeup and be very skinny. HB allows me to open a magazine and learn how to feel better about myself! To top it off, HB is local-and I love that!”

t is often asked, “How do I know if my indoor air quality is poor?” Our bodies are extremely sensitive to air quality. Sneezing, coughing, watering eyes may be indicators of poor air quality. Stale air and odors also indicate problems in the environment. Good quality air should be very neutral. If the air smells like chemicals or fragrance, there is probably an indoor air quality issue that is being covered up. Trust your senses and take appropriate action. ASTROLOGY&HEALTH
All Health is Holistic Health
Chiron Files Turning the Tide
Written By Eric Francis
W
hen the Sun makes its way into the sign Cancer later in the month, it’s going to be in harmony with Chiron and Neptune in Pisces. That’s a water-to-water aspect--a trine. The way we would say this in “astro-talk” is, “Sun trine Neptune and Chiron.” Trines open up a flow, and where Neptune and the water signs are involved, that means the flow of emotions. Where Chiron is involved, that means emotional healing. And with Chiron, healing always begins with raising awareness. Our society and many of us, as individuals, invest quite a lot of energy into figuring out how not to feel. It’s true that a lot comes at us every day, and if you open your eyes to the world, one of the first things you might notice is a world in pain. Is it really possible to feel, in that environment? Well, I would ask another question--is it really possible to suppress feeling, as you bear witness to the struggle of life in our benighted world? Ideally, witnessing the struggle would inspire compassion, and that in turn would lead to taking care of oneself and of others. You could say this is the ultimate challenge we face as seemingly “separate” humans. The realm of Pisces, which can be visionary, is usually the place that the shut-down energy is processed through. That would be our obsession with entertainment, im-
age, glamour and substances that are designed specifically to shut us down. I am speaking mainly of alcohol and antidepressants. Now, I’m not a teetotaler, and I recognize that there are times when psychiatric meds can be vitally important. Consider the Lake Superior-sized vat of liquor that is consumed on the planet every single day, around the clock, and just ask yourself why. Imagine the millions of people getting on the road drunk. There is something underneath all of that. It might be the need to loosen up; it might be the need to drown out the pain of life; in any event, many feelings are concealed. Or, consider how antidepressants don’t actually work to resolve any of our problems, and most people taking them know they would do a lot better in therapy. Of course, in our time of history, therapy is considered confrontational. It takes time. It’s supposedly expensive. But mostly, I think it’s daunting to consider all that we have not considered. Emotional healing almost always proceeds in layers. At first, what we find as we proceed through them might not feel good, and that’s a pretty big deterrent to many people; the goal of life, we are told many places, is to feel good. That, for sure, is the long term goal of emotional healing. Getting started, I think we might need to add other inspirations, such as more honest communication with people around us, access to our creativity, and getting in touch with the will and energy necessary to improve our lives. Yes, that’s about feeling better, but it’s not quite swinging on a hammock in the Bahamas. I have said before that one of the deepest

needs the world faces is for the acknowledgment of emotional healing. Most of the pain in the world, whether it’s in politics, business, relationships or our inner relationship, comes from unresolved emotional issues. The first and most useful step is admitting the need for healing. Where Chiron (or any of the related centaur planets) is involved, there is a pointer to ancestral material. That means that many of the themes that would come up in a healing process are multigenerational. With the Sun in the sign Cancer, we have a clue to look on the maternal side of our lineage: that is, on our mother’s side of the family. It may seem inconceivable that we are carrying the emotional weight of our great-grandmother, but once you start exploring your personal material--or as any practitioner can tell you--it starts to seem really obvious. With the Sun trine Neptune and Chiron, the flow is open to healing, to honesty and to imagination. A trine represents a fragile situation, or a potential that we must consciously put to use with daily practice. But it’s there if we want it. And if enough of us do, gradually we will begin to turn the tide. HB

HOW TO PREPARE:
HOW TO PREPARE:
Preheat oven to 350°F.
1. Add the olive oil, minced garlic and onion to a large pot. Sauté until golden brown. Add salt and pepper. Add more olive oil if need be. 2. Add the vegetable broth and vegetables. Bring to a boil. 3. Boil until the vegetables are cooked, al dente is preferred. 4. Simmer until ready to serve.
Arrange halibut in the middle of a 12-inch x 12-inch piece of parchment paper or foil. Drizzle both sides with oil (if using). Top with lemon and arrange tomatoes, artichoke hearts and parsley over the top and around the sides. Season all over with salt and pepper. Fold up parchment like a package, making sure the seam is at the top, to seal the ingredients inside; tuck under the ends. Transfer to a baking sheet and bake until fish is just cooked through, 15 to 20 minutes. Transfer package to a plate and carefully open the parchment paper to release steam before serving.

HOW TO PREPARE: 1.
In a mixing bowl combine the rice flour, tapioca flour, milk powder, dried yeast, xanthan gun and gelatine.
2.
In a separate bowl mix the olive oil, vinegar, sugar and warm water.
3.
Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet mixture. Beat well for 5 - 6 minutes by hand, or for 3 minutes in a food mixer. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
4.
Line a baking sheet with baking parchment, or lightly oil and flour. Halve the dough, place on the baking sheet and using your hands knead the dough into a circular shape. Sprinkling with flour to stop sticking.
5.
Make the dough approximately 2cm thick and roughly circular in shape.
6.
Bake the flat bread for 10 minutes.
7.
Top the flat bread with the grated cheese and put back into the oven for 18-20 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
HOW TO PREPARE: 1. In a large bowl mix the oats, sunflower seeds, coconut and almonds together. Make sure that they are well mixed. DO NOT add the dried cranberries or any other dried fruit because after 2 hours in the oven they will come out like glass nuggets. 2. In a small saucepan mix together the oil, honey, maple syrup and peanut butter. Melt over a gentle heat until the mixture is well combined. 3. Pour the liquid over the dry ingredients and mix well together. 4. Pour the entire mix into a large roaster and gently spread about, do not compress the mixture as you want it to end up as nuggets, not one solid baked mass. 5. Put in the centre of the oven for 2 hours. After the first 30 minutes have passed, take the mix out of the oven and very gently stir it. Put back into the oven for the remaining 90 minutes. 6. When the cooking time is completed remove from the oven and leave in the roaster until the granola is completely cold. 7. Once the granola is cold add the dried cranberries, or any other dried fruit and mix together. Place in an airtight container for storage. You can ring the changes for taste by mixing and matching other ingredients, for example: pumpkin seeds, pecans, sesame seeds. This recipe is so versatile that you can add different dry ingredients depending on what’s in your store cupboard at the time. However you will always need to add the oats.
