COVERSTORY

Written By Ffjorren Zolfaghar

ummer is here, and thus begins the “lazy days.” Well, that’s what they used to be called anyway. It seems that every year goes by faster and faster, and the summers, they come and go with one blink of an eye. Even if our children have the summer off, we’re still on the “business as usual” schedule. But, we’re somehow inspired to do twice as much. For example, weekends in the summer are often filled with day trips, campouts, weddings, event showers, parties, BBQ gatherings, family vacations, visitors from afar, etc., etc. Now, even though we take these so called vacations, it’s inevitable that a real break is needed after the said “vacation.” With that, it is our hope at HB Magazine that you take a little time this summer to do absolutely nothing. Sit on your deck, sip a cool beverage and just chill. Take in the warm air and summer breeze, and let the sun gently kiss your skin. We hope you enjoy your Father’s Day, and that you find a little “laziness” in your days of June. HB Pause. Breathe. & Be Well, Ffjorren Zolfahgar Editor & Content Director

he radishes on our cover add color and flavor to many salads

and sides. The bulbs are generally eaten raw, and the leaves and stems are sometimes used as a leaf vegetable. Radishes have a fairly quick life cycle. The summer variety has a germination period of three to seven days, reaching full maturity at three to four weeks. Radishes are named after the Greek name of the genus Raphanus, which means “quickly appearing.” Try adding a few radishes to your summer fare. Even a slice or two will act as simple, yet lovely plate décor. Here’s a great salad to try…dice and then mix all of the following: red or white onion, radish, turnip, red and orange bell peppers, parsley, carrots and any other veggies that make your mouth water. Top it with a dressing of your choice.

healthy mouth is the first step to a healthy body. Thanks to advances in dentistry, there are treatments to suit every type of patient and dental need. From periodontal laser therapy, to non-mercury fillings using principles of biomimetic dentistry, “Dr. Mac” prefers to educate his patients, in addition to treating them, because he believes that informed patients are better prepared to make decisions regarding their health and well being.

Dr. J.S. McElhinney, III, DDS has been practicing dentistry in Reno, Nevada since 1978. He graduated in the top seven percent of his class at Boise State College, and graduated in the top 25 percent of his dental school class at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, World Clinical Laser Institute, American Dental Association, Nevada Dental Association and Northern Nevada Dental Society. He has been a member of several study groups in the past including the Reno-Tahoe Dental Excellence Study Group, which brought in guest lecturers and sponsored hands-on training courses in various specialty areas of dentistry, such as implants. He was a member of Los Medicos Voladores, and has been on several health care missions to poor villages in Baja, Mexico.

“Lasers may be a good alternative to the traditional drill, as anesthetic is not needed as often,” says Dr. McElhinney. “The procedure is more precise and can reduce symptoms and healing times associated with traditional therapies.” Lasers are often used for teeth whitening, ulcer excision, laser gum treatment (also known as periodontal laser therapy, or nonsurgical gum treatment), cavity preparation and removal of decay. He says, “in the future, laser technology may be used to prevent decay by increasing the strength of the tooth.”

Although Dr. McElhinney is a “general dentist” by legal classification, his many years of extensive post-graduate education and training allow him to enjoy emphasizing comprehensive dental treatment, cosmetic rejuvenation, laser dental techniques and implants, and Geneva 2000 dentures customized for the most natural look. “Dr. Mac” is an avid alpine skier, enjoys hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and music, especially jazz (he’s currently on the board of For the Love of Jazz), and sings tenor in his church choir. He has two grown children. HB

Unlike conventional dental instruments, lasers are whisper quiet, except for a slight popcorn popping sound during some procedures. You may experience the sound of a rush of air, since air suction is often used to keep the area cool and cleaner. You should be able to relax and be comfortable while the dental laser is in use. Laser treatment allows “Dr. Mac” to use less anesthesia. Plus, there is also a significantly lower loss of blood, swelling, and postoperative discomfort.

EAR CANDLING

T

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

Thirsty Skin? Written By Angela Lively

n the high Sierra Nevada desert we have very dry summers and winters. Therefore, we need extra hydration compared to other areas of the country. Of course, we should also be hydrating ourselves from the inside with at least eight full glasses of water, good supplements, and nutrition every day. Sometimes it’s just not enough to keep our skin hydrated and youthful looking. In today’s society, both men and women are concerned about aging skin. Arbonne international is a company that knows all the secrets to cure dry skin, from head to toe. Professional scientists and doctors have been perfecting their products since 1975. The products are formulated in Switzerland and made in the U.S. Nevada’s Arbonne distribution factory is located in Irvine California, which lessens the carbon footprint on our earth. Arbonne is committed to environmental responsibility. They support responsible harvesting of their botanical ingredients, and continue to practice source reduction by optimizing packaging and product design to use fewer materials. Papers and catalogues are printed on recycled paper, with soy based ink. Beginning this summer of 2012, we will be packaging all of our skin care and health and wellness products in biodegradable plastic containers.

support dietary supplement. To achieve best results, daily use of the complete RE9 line is recommended. Our top selling item in that line is the advanced RE9 anti-aging, restorative day cream. It has a natural, fresh scent of orange with SPF 20 that protects skin from the damaging sun. Due to the intensity of the sun, one should even wear an SPF 20 while driving. Our day cream starts your day with concentrated ingredients that support collagen, with key ingredients such as algae extract, kudzu, and peptides, giving skin all day moisture without causing skin to become greasy or shiny. HB

All of Arbonne’s ingredients are free of mineral oil, parabens, formaldehyde, petrolatum, animal by-products, (restaurant grease), phthalates and PABA. Most major name brands on the market have these unnatural ingredients, which cause over dryness, clogged pores, allergic reactions, breakouts and, rashes. Products with mineral oil just sit on the first layer of the skin, not allowing the deeper layers to be moisturized. We might also notice having to constantly reapply lotion, and then wonder why our skin is still dry. Well, when we wash our skin that first layer of lotion is going to disappear because they are not good, quality, natural products.

For more info, e-mail Angela Lively at livelyskin@gmail.com.

Our skin needs prestige ingredients that soak in as deep as the epidermis and even our dermis layers. Arbonne’s RE9, anti-aging system is top of the line with the purest, most concentrated ingredients. RE9 Advanced synergizes nine major age-defying elements and botanicals in a powerful system. Consumer reports visible results in just 24 hours, stating their redness cleared up and fine lines were less noticeable. It’s been clinically proven to improve even sun damage. Using the six step line will renew and rejuvenate skin, day and night, getting rid of the dead cells that cause the appearance of fine lines. Crossinology: Brain Integration Technique

Written By Susan J McCrossin, AP Submitted By Cherry River Wellness

A

ll learning dysfunctions have their root in how the brain functions. The brain is designed to “learn.” From the time we are born until we die, learning is as natural as breathing and certainly as important since our very survival depends on it.

dependent upon what we learned. Since learning is so natural, why is it that some of us learn easily, others learn only with difficulty, while others have a difficult time learning traditional skills such as reading, spelling, and mathematics at all?

Initially it is our physical survival that depends on learning “Look both ways before crossing the road!” In technological societies it is our economic survival and success that are

You might say it is all a matter of access: what brain functions you can access, how well you can access the functions available, and what you have to access.

June 2012

The brain functions much like water running down a hill; it will always take the most direct processing route available. Unimpeded, water will always run straight down the hill, but if its path is blocked, it will seek the next most direct route down the hill. Each time it is blocked, the pathway becomes longer and less efficient at getting the water down the hill. The same is true of processing in the brain. If all functions are equally accessible, the brain will always choose the simplest, most direct functions to do the processing required. There are many ways of performing mental tasks, and the brain will choose the most efficient route for processing if the most direct function is not available. If many brain functions are not accessible, the processing path may become very long and inefficient. Each time the processing path becomes longer and less efficient, the level of “stress” encountered using that pathway increases. When the level of “stress” reaches a high enough level, we may opt out of situations that require us to access these functions altogether. Unfortunately, these avoidance behaviors are often miss-interpreted as “just not doing what you are told” or “misbehavior.” The response to these “avoidance behaviors” may be to tell the person to just stop misbehaving and “pick up your game!” This only compounds the “stress” of attempting to do these tasks, usually leading to further avoidance behaviors, and exaggerated misbehavior. Imagine how you would feel if you have struggled through your reading, mathematics, English etc. assignments, putting in the best effort you are capable of, only to be told, “Well you’re just going to have to try harder!”

Crossinology Brain Integration Technique requires, on average, between eight to twelve hours of treatment. This includes an initial assessment that serves as a benchmark to evaluate future change, and points out the areas needing the most attention. The Brain Integration procedure releases stresses in the deep brain centers, including the Limbic System, which control access to and integration of hemisphere functions.

Many people having the greatest difficulty with “learning” are often innately very clever. They just can’t access specific brain functions needed to perform certain tasks. If a clever, intelligent person does not read well or spell well, or has great difficulty understanding and doing even simple mathematics, a reasonable assumption is that person just isn’t “concentrating,” or “paying attention,” or “trying hard enough.” What is overlooked is that these clever, intelligent people may indeed be clever and intelligent, but unable to access the relevant brain function when needed, or only able to do so under duress.

When all the functional areas have been addressed, low selfesteem and behavioral problems related to the previous learning difficulties are addressed, using effective emotional and memory stress release (diffusion) techniques. All correction techniques used are non-invasive. The techniques are based on the use of muscle monitoring, acupressure, emotional and memory release, and sound and light techniques, together with other left/right brain integration exercises. HB

Learning tasks require access to different functions and combinations of functions in the brain. The brain can be divided into several functional regions, each of which processes information in different ways. The two brain regions recognized most commonly by people are the right and left cerebral hemispheres.

For more info, call Cherry River Wellness at (530) 832-1400, or visit online at www.cherryriverwellness.com.

These two hemispheres are not separate, as they are connected along most of their length at the bottom of the fissure by a structure called the Corpus Callosum. The Corpus Callosum has approximately 200 million nerve fibers running between the two hemispheres. It functions much like a telephone exchange, allowing a two-way flow of communication between the hemispheres.

Everybody Out of the Pool! “Going Within” Written By Rev. Jack R. Elliott, Author and Spiritual Life Coach

D

id you ever have one of those times in life when you wanted to scream, “Everybody out of the pool!”?

pool.” Like little soldiers, we all “calmly” drifted back into the pool, waiting attentively for our next instruction.

I first heard the phrase when I was five, taking swimming lessons from Mrs. Baker, the life guard at our town’s pool. She was a kind, sweet woman and as she would say on “[the] other side of 60.” Every once in a while, she’d become so exacerbated with her class of 10 little ones, that she blew on her whistle and shouted “Everybody out of the pool!”

Recently, my life has manifested in some chaotic and embarrassing moments. I thought I was in control, but everything around me appeared out of control. I experienced a crescendo of missed meetings, broken agreements or misunderstandings with those I love. I hit a boiling point, and I could hear myself saying, “Everybody out of the pool!” I only said it to myself, but I know it means that I need to stop and revisit the decisions I’ve made.

We’d stand shivering in a semi-circle as she wagged her finger at us scolding, “Becky! Stop pulling Susan’s ponytail. You think I don’t see you but I do! Jimmy, farting in the water is cute once, but only once. You do it one more time and I’m going to make you clean the men’s restroom. Billy, stop asking to go to the bathroom, you’ve already been three times in the last 20 minutes. Jack, stop closing your eyes when I tell you to hold your breath. You need to see where you’re going! Now, one at a time, and without splashing anyone, all of you back in the

Taking such an abrupt stop now and then serves us. I know in my life, it’s Spirit speaking directly to me saying, “Stop Jack! Make another choice, another decision.” When I hear that voice, I follow up by asking “Ok God (Spirit), what am I to see in this?” Frequently, the next voice I hear gently asks, “Are you sure this is what you really want?” If my response is “no,” then I know that something in my life is up for re-negotiation.

I have to make a decision of what will serve my greatest good. When I don’t listen to the voice, “sin” occurs. My experience soon swirls in the consequence of broken agreements, missed appointments, financial stress and pass due deliverables. New Thought and Progressive Christian philosophers teach that the true definition of “sin” is derived from archery. When the arrow misses the target, it was referred to as “sinning” or missing the mark. My sin (from time to time) is over committing, in an effort to please those I love. I decide to take on a task, not because I’m called or want to do it, but because someone asks and I know that I can do it, disregarding my internal voice that says, “Do you really have time to do this?” I’m accountable. No one has done anything “to me.” I’ve sinned against myself. I’ve missed the mark with my own integrity by making a bad decision. When it’s time for all my decisions to “reenter the pool” I have to be honest with each. Some commitments will have to be re-negotiated. Broken agreements will have to be atoned for, and new agreements will have to be taken on only after prayerful discernment has revealed that I am indeed called, willing and able to fully commit to that which is asked of me. I must also make the decision to forgive myself for sinning. In his book titled, “The Power of Decision,” author Raymond Charles Barker offers amazing insights into the decisions we make. I included this quote based on his work. I use it as Spirit’s (God’s) affirmation for me, and I invite you to discern if it might work for you. “I know and accept that I am the result of my past decisions. I forgive and release those that no longer serve my calling--and I embrace those that affirm my greatest good. I know that I will become and experience the result of my present decisions, therefore, I choose wisely by mastering the tools of my life, “my mind and emotions.” I know that my decisions, right or wrong gives direction to my subconscious mind and that Spirit/Life will respond accordingly to my decision. Knowing and accepting this; I am correctly decisive regarding all matters of my life. I know what I need to know at the instant I need to know it. The results of this correct knowing of original ideas bring forth new and improved situations in my life with each new breath. For this I am and live in gratitude.” And so it is.” HB Join Rev. Jack this summer for his Summer Book Club Series based on “The Power of Decision” by Raymond Charles Barker. To join the book club, visit Revjackrelliott.org for more information! Email Rev. Myths of Heart Disease - Part II Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B Continued from Page 14 the different factors that have been identified as risk factors for CHD and arterial damage.

Another important risk factor, which has been largely overlooked, is the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol caused from a lack of antioxidant rich foods, herbs, and nutrients and/or a large intake of foods and chemicals that contain damaging free radicals. Chronic inflammation also contributes to oxidative stress (which breaks down your cell walls) and an increase in CHD. When LDL oxidizes, it promotes atherosclerosis (plaquing of the arteries) by promoting a process that causes damage to the artery wall--especially in the presence of stress and high blood sugar conditions (insulin resistance, Syndrome X, Diabetes I and II). Inflammation is also involved in the process of damaging the cell wall, causing your cholesterol to attempt to patch up the damage. Cholesterol is the good guy. It’s trying to fix you. Chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, high cortisol (stress) and insulin are the real underlying cause of chronic disease and particularly CHD.

Elevated CRP Elevated LDL Excess insulin Low LDL High glucose (high blood sugar) Nitric oxide deficit Excess triglycerides Low testosterone (men) High testosterone (women) Excess homocysteine Increased blood pressure Low Vitamin K

The production of C-reactive protein (CRP) is an essential part of the inflammatory process. The measurement of C-reactive protein reflects the level of inflammatory activity deep within the body. It appears that certain conditions create a state of excessive inflammation within the circulatory system. High C-reactive protein levels are evidence of this cardiac related type of inflammation.

Excess cholesterol So, it’s more about cardiovascular disease and inflammation. There are many key inflammatory biochemical risk markers for cardiovascular disease, which is beyond the scope of this article to detail. But, inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide balance and the use of nutrients (flavanoids, carotenoids, sterols [Vitamin D], Vitamin C and E, Omega 3 fatty acids, etc.) are very powerful in circumventing the body’s cardiovascular inflammatory pathway and rendering “high cholesterol” to doing

If you have multiple risk markers for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, they all act together to create havoc in your heart’s inflammatory pathway. The following is a list of

what is does best--create healthy cell walls and hormones. Most of the above listed risk factors for cardiovascular disease have pro-inflammatory components. They all contribute to the atherosclerotic plaquing process. Nitric Oxide plays a pivotal role in preventing the progression of atherosclerosis by dilating your heart’s arteries and not allowing the damage to the arteries that triggers cholesterol (plaquing) to patch them up. Nutrients such as arginine, antioxidants (Vitamin C and E, lipoic acid, selenium, glutathione), and enzyme co-factors (Vitamin B2, B3, B6, B12 folate, zinc) help to elevate nitric oxide levels, and play an important role in management of cardiovascular disease. Within the broad range of cholesterol levels from 180 to 240, there is little to no evidence that this alone correlates with heart disease. In fact, below 180 there is an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke, depression and suicide. Above 240 there may be an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Over age 70, elevated cholesterol and cardiovascular events no longer correlate. All told, total serum cholesterol alone is a poor indicator of cardiovascular disease. Half of all heart attack patients have normal cholesterol levels. So, not only do statin drugs have their inherent drawbacks (see part one of this article), but in some ways, they are treating a fabricated problem based on misunderstood and misrepresented “research.” As a health care “consumer,” one must be wary of the current cholesterol hysteria. A person should investigate the facts in order to make educated health care choices. HB References: 1. has a very narrow window of therapeutic effectiveness without side effects. A quick review of herbal and amino acid erectile products on Google turned up 170 different products.

Testosterone (T) is the most important sex hormone for men and is not only libidinal but also anti inflammatory, great for the heart and mood (grumpy old men) and supports healthy bones, muscles and prostate. Testosterone metabolism can be improved in many ways and is blocked by a number patent medications and environmental toxins. Eugene Shippen, MD gives a great review of many of these issues in his book The Testosterone Syndrome. Andropause (Manopause) can develop slowly in men after 50, but low T levels are frequently found in young males (and women), even in their 20’s and 30’s. It is important to test for it even in males who report satisfactory libido. A history, which includes prescribed anti depressants, proton pump inhibitors (Pepcid- Prilosec) and statin drugs, is also a reason to test T as they can inhibit T levels. Testosterone, is a mainstay for libido, sexual desire, and can be important for erectile function. However, vascular concerns may still restrict full functioning.

Pandan Pandan, a combination of Philippine herbs brought to the U.S. by Andreas Marx, ND, OMD, LAC, a German Naturopath from Cologne who lectured for Dr. Vol and has taught EAV (electroacupunture) for over 35 years is the president of MarcoPharma International Company. He has imported Nestmann herbal tinctures from Germany and has recently developed a new spectrum of Philippine herbs, Volcano Life, which bring a Pacific influence of wonderful new products to the American market place. Pandan comes from the Thatch Screwpine herb, Pandanaceae tectorius and Bignay, Horseradish tree, Saw palmetto, with accompanying famous herbs for kidney and immune boosting health Ngai camphor tree, Holy basil, Yerba Buena, Pansit-panisitan, Chinese chaste tree, Indian tinospora, Madagascar periwinkle, Rauwolfia and Panax ginseng.

Nitric oxide (NO), the capillary vasodilatory, is made from the amino acids arginine and citrulline and is necessary for blood flow into the pelvic pudendal artery to achieve erections. Arginine and nitric oxide levels decrease with aging and are good to supplement for everyone, and they are helpful with erectile dysfunction. ED drugs such as Viagra and Cialis are specific nitric oxide synthase agonists (increase NO for the pelvic vasculature).

The bottom line with this preparation of herbs has been great improvement with erectile function. It helps with frequency of erections, as well as duration of erections. We call it Cialis lite. Wives and girlfriends insist their mate keeps up with their Pandans. After approximately one and a half years of using the herbs in our clinic, we have had no reports of side effects of any kind. The dose is one or two caps per day with one or two 30 minutes before intimacy. Some men prefer three before intimacy. It is great to have a safe herbal preparation, with many health benefits, to assist men with erectile function. HB

“More is better” is a rather shallow concept, but it’s good to note and acknowledge the miraculous power of homeopathy using infinitesimal dosages, which have the potential to have great effect in male disorders and aging issues. However, our male patients who have what I call the John Wayne personality (I only have one lung but I still smoke two packs of Camels a day) need a more allopathic (regular medical) feeling approach to a healthier sex life. Side effects of the above medications, hypotension, blue vision and erections lasting for more than four hours, etc. give concerns about long term safety for their administration. Likewise, some herbal aphrodisiac preparations such as Yohimbine, an alpha2 adrenergic agonist, can cause tachycardia (rapid heart rate), dizziness, anxiety, insomnia and

New Anti-Inflammatory First Aid

The easy solution is to utilize over the counter Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatories (OTC NSAIDS) such as naproxen sodium, aspirin, ibuprofen (Aleve, Celebrex, Excedrin, Advil, Motrin) until they disrupt digestion and cause ulcers or kidney damage. Relatively benign herbal anti-inflammatories (Boswellin, Bromelain, Curcumin, MSM, Quercetin, Tumeric) work well until they irritate the intestines also. Then, there are the steroids with their dire side effects of increased aggression, liver damage, and heart attack or stroke due to high cholesterol. Some of us have run out of options for decreasing our pain.

Written By JeanAnn Fitzgerald

Even our pets suffer chronic inflammation. But this might be advantageous for us all. Veterinary pharmaceutical BioVeteria is offering a new class of anti-inflammatories, unrelated to the aforementioned ones (bioveteria.com/leukostat). This hope-inspiring compound is called an Immune Selective AntiInflammatory Derivative (ImSAID). BioVeteria Life Sciences and Imulan Bio Therapeutics are offering LeukoSTAT to veterinarians for canine and feline intestinal and oral health. There is currently a study being done on canine atopic dermatitis (allergies), funded by a grant from the American Kennel Club.

T

here are far too many of us suffering chronic inflammation and pain. The cause could be a forgotten childhood back injury, debilitating us as we age. Or, our allergies have worsened over time and now the doctor says it is asthma. Maybe our intestines always bother us. Perhaps arthritis limits our mobility. You name it, any dis-ease produces inflammation (swelling), which is the body’s over-enthusiastic attempt to heal the problem.

While steroids and NSAIDS cause a reduction in immune activity (inflammation), ImSAIDS lessen inflammation itself. An ImSAID is not a synthetic pharmaceutical drug, but a combination of natural amino acids. Amino acids are the organic chemical compounds that form proteins, which are the building blocks for the human body.

With a quick look at inflammation, we learn injury or dysfunction causes leukocytes (white blood cells) to protect the area with inflammation. Leukocyte over-activation has been termed “the enemy within” because it can be detrimental to health when the body over-responds with too much swelling. This can lead to problems with the pancreas, intestines, asthma, trauma, hepatitis, bowel disease, infection, bladder, the spine and joints, etc.

Discouragement: The Other Silent Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD

O

ver the years, heart disease has been dubbed “the silent killer.”

But there is another disease of the heart which can be just as deadly, and just as subtle. It’s called discouragement. Discouragement is a slow but methodical killer that feeds upon the unresolved disappointments of your life. It is a predator of the human spirit, dragging its prey, over muffled pleas, to the dark cellar of broken dreams.

Discouragement steals hope and undermines your faith in the value and purpose of life. With cynicism, it sews seeds of bitterness and resignation. It sours you to life. True to its name, it relieves you of your courage, a precious gift of the heart. Discouragement is your enemy, the enemy of humanity, and of nature herself. Discouragement flourishes in a society that has become psychopathic. As more and more people live only for themselves, individuals of a more caring and sensitive nature tend to become discouraged. Injured by the selfishness and arrogance of others, their wounds reach all the way to their heart. At this point, there is a temptation to give up, or give in. Some retreat from the world to live their life in resignation, cynicism or self-pity. Discouragement is a product of evil, and a valuable product at that, for if you can break the enemy’s spirit, you no longer have to fight them. When you have “psyched them out,” they are now on your side, even though they may claim to be on the other. Oddly, some people prefer a state of discouragement to that of faith because it gives them an excuse to stop trying and striving. If the war can’t be won, then why fight it? They lament the state of the world or of their relationships, while they absolve themselves of their responsibility to make things better. Some become fonder of complaining than changing. Most don’t appreciate that even small changes, like the ripples from a pebble dropped into a pond, grow in size and effect over time.

Killer

The important victories in this world are not about people or causes. They are about souls. Try not to lose yours in the course of battle. Say “No” to discouragement. ARE YOU MENTALLY LAZY? Written By June Milligan, MEd., CCHt

N

o one wants to think of themselves as lazy. We want to be dynamic and capable, setting and accomplishing goals while living interesting fulfilling lives along the way. We want to be healthy, to feel good and to have fun. However, very few of us were taught that our thoughts and expectations create vibrational frequencies that beam out into this energy soup we live in--affecting our own bodies and everything around us. Those vibrational frequencies (like a radio signal) bring us the life we think about--the life we expect. Thoughts are things. Physicists who do consciousness research, such as Dr. William Tiller at Stanford University, know that our thoughts can assist us or can do the opposite: sabotage us. During his research, he found that human intentions can significantly change consciousness as well as physical matter. Therefore, directed and focused intentions can transform us into a higher state of beingness, as well as a more coherent state of health. What does this mean? Be clear about your intentions and focus on what you want; meditate regularly to quiet and control your mind, and make a conscious effort to do things that make you happy. You will be working with the natural principles of physics to attract and create what you want in your life: spiritually, materially, healthwise and in your relationships.

each cell functions at the minimum of a hundred thousand processes per second. This is quantum physics, and you have 50 trillion of those busy little cells inside your body functioning and communicating right now, automatically responding to the chemicals created by your thoughts, while you’re reading this page. If you’re thinking toxic, blaming negative thoughts, you’re creating damaging hormones and chemicals in your body. If you’re thinking coherent thoughts, your body is creating beneficial hormones and chemicals.

It’s nice to know that physics is confirming what many people have found to be the way to success, whether it’s physically, mentally, spiritually or emotionally. However, most of us have very chaotic thought processes because we let our minds run off in all directions. We have many things that demand our attention, and rather than focusing on what is immediately needed, taking care of it and moving on to the next focused thought, we end up thinking about everything at once. Such as, “What will I fix for dinner tonight? I wonder what time the kids will need to be at the game. Should I call my mother? I don’t want to; she always makes me feel bad. I need to study for that test next week. That guy at work is driving me crazy.” And so on. Or we may become mentally sidetracked and sabotaged by our friends’ stories, or by the media’s insistence on giving us the most negative version of everything happening everywhere.

We are walking miracles, with free will to think what we choose, intend what we choose and believe what we choose, especially now that we are adults. Since we know that every thought floods all 50 trillion cells, and beams out to impact everyone and everything around us, it seems important to consciously be aware of how we’re using our minds to program our bodies and our lives. It’s embarrassing to think that we’re not disciplined enough to be able to control our own mind! By conscious choice, we can alter our “thought-life” so that the thoughts coursing through our mind-body system are beneficial to our cells, to the people around us, and to our lives. No more “lazy mind” for me! HB

When emotions are present, our thoughts are even more powerful. The thought is the engine, but emotion is the fuel. Most people have no tools for focusing their minds, so chaos reigns. As is our mind, so goes our life. If we can discipline our minds to focus on what we want, we’ll be naturally attracting and allowing what we want. More and more, both science and consciousness research say that a coherent mind is necessary for productivity, as well as happiness, just like a coherent heartbeat is necessary for health and wellness. Coherent is defined as “ordered and consistent; agreeing; naturally or logically connected; united; congruent; bound together.” So a coherent mind is the exact opposite of an undisciplined, chaotic mind.

For instance, in preparation for certain energy healing seminars, participants are asked to practice getting to a place of appreciation, no matter what is going on around them; they are asked to practice this for weeks leading up to the seminar. It does get easier every time you do it. Coherent thoughts create coherent emotions, and the most coherent, the highest vibrational-frequency emotions are Joy, Empowerment, Freedom, Love and Appreciation. Appreciation is the easiest to get to in most cases. At certain times, it may not be that easy to get to Joy, Empowerment, Freedom or Love, but you can always find something to appreciate, no matter what’s happening around you.

any people do not realize how important proper gastrointestinal function is for their total health. It is the gastrointestinal (GI) tract that guides the delivery of nutrients to the whole body, and it stabilizes the health of the entire immune system. Any compromise in the GI tract causes a breakdown in the whole system – resulting in one symptom after another, including possibly leading to increased intestinal permeability, also known as leaky gut syndrome. There is a little known fact about gastrointestinal health – good digestion starts with amino acids! Amino acids work to strengthen the immune system, detoxify unhealthy bacteria and tissue in the gut, and rebuild new gastrointestinal cells. Once in the bloodstream, amino acids help to re-establish normal digestive functions, strengthen the pancreas and stimulate the production of digestive acids and enzymes. There are over 15,000 enzymes produced in the pancreas. Amino acids are the building blocks for all of these enzymes!

Amino Acids & Probiotics = Good Digestion Another little known fact about gastrointestinal health – when coupled with a high-quality probiotic, amino acids promote a synergistic impact to detoxify and heal gastrointestinal disorders. This means that the combination of a complete blend of free-form amino acids, ingested with a probiotic, can reduce or eliminate many painful digestive issues such as: Acne Candida Flatulence Nausea Arthritis

Constipation

Food allergies

Parasites

B12 Dermatitis Gallbladder Psoriasis deficiency disease Belching Diarrhea

Hives

Bloating Eczema Iron deficiency

Rosacea Weak, cracked fingernails

Visit www.HBmag.com

Once digestive issues develop, the result is an influx in the production of acid, creating an inhospitable environment for beneficial bacteria (commonly known as probiotics). These “good” bacteria in your gut control the increase of harmful microorganisms. When probiotics are depleted, the integrity of the GI tract is compromised, including its protective lining; this can lead to leaky gut syndrome. Leaky gut simply means that unwanted larger molecules such as toxins, microbes, undigested food, waste, etc. are allowed to pass through the intestinal wall directly into the bloodstream. Your body’s natural barrier to harmful microorganisms is not protecting your system completely. A leaky gut has painful symptoms and results in a significant loss in regulation of the immune system – inflammation ensues. Did you know that an average of 60 to 70 percent of the immune system is found in and around the GI tract? If the immune system is not supported

by the natural protectiveness of the GI tract, it has to overwork, resulting in inflammation and eventually disease. Why are our GI tracts so easily compromised in today’s world? Several factors can lead to symptoms of leaky gut syndrome including poor diet, antibiotics, and high stress. The fact is that approximately 60 to 70 million Americans are affected by digestive diseases. The good news is that amino acids and probiotics together provide a natural, robust answer to gastrointestinal disorders. Are some amino acids and probiotics more effective than others? For optimal digestive process, a complete, free-form amino blend and a probiotic with prebiotic are the best choices. Why? When amino acids are in their free-form state (separated from the long protein molecule chain), the body does not need the intestinal tract to break them down (they are pre-digestive). This means that they pass quickly through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream for immediate use. When it comes to probiotics, having a prebiotic included in the formula assists the probiotic with longevity and optimal impact. One feeds the other. Together, they work as a healthy fertilizer would work to improve the soil in agriculture. The probiotic initiates healthy bacteria, and the prebiotic reduces inflammation and has an antioxidant effect on the cells. Benefits of regular consumption of probiotics with prebiotics include enhanced immune function, improved colonic integrity, decreased incidence and duration of intestinal infections, down-regulated allergic response, and improved digestion and elimination processes. HB The bottom line: maintaining gastrointestinal health with amino acids and probiotics should be a core consideration in the strategy to maintain wellness. Nobody wants a leaky gut! References: 1. Fruit and Veggie Washes Written By Lissie Lyles

T

Nature Clean Fruit and Veggie Wash: Ingredients: Water, sodium lauryl sarcosinate (food grade cleanser from palm oil), carboxyl methyl cellulose (cellulose gum), witch hazel (natural astringent), citric acid, potassium sorbate.

hese days, fruit and vegetable washing products abound; and with good reason. Between the waxes, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and risk of contamination by humans, livestock or impure irrigation, it’s no wonder consumers want some extra reassurance that their produce is clean. Even if you only buy organic veggies, there is still a slight risk of contamination because of the size and scope of our industrial food system. But are these fruit and vegetable cleaning sprays safe, or do they just add chemicals residue of their own to your produce? Most of these products don’t come cheap either. Let’s take a closer look at some of their labels and see if they are really worth the price.

Pros: Eh... Cons: Sodium Lauryl Sarcosinate has been cited by the environmental working group as a harmful ingredient that has been linked to cancer and other health problems. It is also a penetration enhancer, meaning that it can drive the other chemicals deeper into your fruits and veggies. The good news is you can make your own fruit and vegetable washes at home with simple, safe and cost effective ingredients. Start with a bowl of cold water and add about three tablespoons per gallon of water. Add one of the following: raw apple cider vinegar, baking soda, or food grade hydrogen peroxide. Allow the produce to soak for five to 10 minutes. Make sure you’ve added enough water to cover them completely. Use a vegetable brush to scrub off any dirt or bugs, and then rinse and dry. Simple as that! As always, choose real food over food products, and wash your fruits and vegetables with gentle nontoxic substances! HB

Citrus Magic Fruit and Veggie Wash: Ingredients: Water, Natural cleaners made from corn and coconut, Lemon oil, Sodium citrate (a natural derivative of citrus fruit), Glycerin (from coconut oil), and Grapefruit seed extract. Pros: Plant based ingredients and a short ingredient list. Grapefruit seed extract has antibacterial action.

References:

Cons: The second ingredient listed is very vague, meaning there’s no way to know what it actually is, or if it’s actually safe. After all, sodium Lauryl Sulfates, which have been linked to cancer, derive from coconuts. Just because a chemical is extracted from a plant, does not make it safe by default.

Male Pelvic Floor and Intimacy Written By JeanAnn Fitzgerald

T

he pelvic floor is usually associated with female urinary and even bowel incontinence. This is because childbirth can traumatize and inactivate the pelvic floor muscles. But men can also be incontinent due to trauma, inflammation, and surgery. Some believe male impotence can be due to pelvic floor imbalance too. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that form a sling or hammock across the opening at the bottom of the hip bones. These muscles keep the bladder, intestines, prostate (or uterus) in place and functioning properly during daily life and amorous events. Occurrences such as physical trauma, injury to the sciatica, damage to spinal disks, stress, prostate cancer, surgery scars, and inflammation in the area can trigger floor problems. Should these muscles become constantly tight with spasm, things might begin to malfunction. The floor muscles have openings between them for urine and stool passage, thus their ability to adversely affect those functions. The male organ’s in-flow and delivery system also exits between the same muscles. Thus, male (or female) physical intimacy problems can possibly be traced back to these muscles, even though surgery or other culprits are blamed for it.

Male performance difficulties include the inability to gain or maintain rigidity, pain during ejection, absence of fluid, backpassage into the bladder, premature finish, weak orgasm, and undue delay in attaining culmination. A 25 year old attorney reported that one day, while he was still in college, he was walking to class and started to feel a pain at the tip of his penis. “It was a mixture of stinging and burning, and it would hurt terribly as it rubbed against my clothes...I developed other symptoms: pain in the urethra during intimate encounters. Less than a year after his vasectomy, another man began to experience severe pain in his testicles, and an inability to climax. A military man’s problem began as an occasional ache in the groin area that was aggravated by standing. This was accompanied by pain that radiated down the right thigh and sometimes extended into the calf. His urine flow was slow and sometimes an intermediate trickle. He experienced sharp pain inside the rectum that could last up to ten seconds. There was also a tight feeling in the area between the testicles and rectum for about an hour after sex.

HERBS&SPICES

American Ginseng: Star Spangled Sang Written By Allison Prater

P

anax Quinquefolia, or American Ginseng, is a perennial member of the ivy family. The plant’s gnarly, human shaped roots, as well as its forked leaves were traditionally used by first American Tribes in eastern North America. American Ginseng once flourished in the Appalachian and Ozark mountain regions, and the adjacent forested regions of what is today Pennsylvania, New York State, and Ontario. By the 19th century, the benefits of this herb were known to white settlers and it was discovered that the roots could collect a handsome profit from Chinese and Hong Kong traders who valued old roots in particular. Due to over harvesting by “Sang Hunters” the population of this medicinal plant has greatly diminished. The plant has also been negatively impacted by increased urbanization, habitat loss and deer grazing. Much of the American Ginseng today is commercially grown in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and is usually harvested when it is between three and four years old. Older, wild roots are still considered to be the most valuable, and so today, Sang Hunters still abound. Wild harvesting of American Ginseng is not sustainable because once the roots are harvested the plant is effectively killed, with no way to regenerate itself. For this reason, it is important when purchasing this herb to make sure it is from a commercial, and not a wild crafted source. In the Chinese languages, American Ginseng is called Huaqishen, which literally translates to “The Star Spangled Banner Ginseng” or Xiyangshen, which means “West Ocean Ginseng.” It is very similar to the Chinese Panax Ginseng, although American Ginseng is slightly less potent than its Chinese counterpart. The former is mainly used for tonifying the “qi.” American Ginseng is an adaptogen. Adaptogenic herbs modulate the hormones, boost immunity, assist the body in

coping with stress in all its forms, and boost endurance. In short, it enhances the body’s ability to adapt. American Ginseng helps normalize blood pressure, particularly low blood pressure. It is a powerful liver tonic, helping to clear the body’s inner heat. Inner heat is accumulated when we consume too many fried or spicy foods, when we are sleep deprived, and it can also occur more easily during the hot summer months. It has anti-depressive applications, often associated with debility. American Ginseng is also famous for its aphrodisiac actions, making it a popular choice for treating sexual inadequacy, impotence and erectile dysfunction. This herb combines well with Damiana and Saw Palmetto for treating conditions related to glandular weakness. Small pieces of the root may be chewed by themselves to boost energy. The herb may also be used in a tea, or taken in tincture form. Ginseng should not be used with disease conditions that manifest as inflammation, high fever, or burning sensation. Occasionally, this herb may produce dizziness and headaches, especially if taken in excess. As always, please consult a professional and licensed practitioner who is well versed in herbs before working with this powerful medicinal plant. HB

GARDENING “A Rough Patch” Written By Teresa Howell

The Time is Right

I

’d just poured Beth her first cup of coffee when the oven timer rang. “What’s the timer for?” she asked.

I’m trying to do a better job of conserving water in my garden. My well is pretty deep, and it is already the single biggest user of electricity on my solar-powered property. Since I can’t seem to stop enlarging my garden every year, I have to either conserve or buy more solar panels.

“Peas.” I said. “And onions. Now I have to toss some on the cauliflower and broccoli.” “Sounds interesting. Give me the recipe.”

If I used city water, I’d have the incentive of high water bills pushing conservation. For those of us out in Sagebrush Suburbia, the electricity, which powers the well, may seem cheap – until the well gives out and needs to be drilled again. It behooves all of us in the desert to conserve water.

“Whatever recipe you want, I’ll give it to you after I change the water.” I love Beth dearly, but sometimes I wonder about the waywardness of her logic.

A few relevant factors: my garden is large and I am forgetful. I am also inept with any technology that requires the ability to read small print, so I haven’t installed timers on my irrigation. That would be a daunting task, because I have around thirty individual zones to water. I have managed to install drip lines in most of the garden beds, but the technology that would set up an automatic system eludes me.

When I first started gardening, I used a soaker hose to irrigate. I found that most soaker hose only lasted a few seasons at best, and soon leaks would develop in one spot, while the pores would clog in another, resulting in uneven watering. The drip lines I have recently installed have emitters established at preset intervals. A few years ago, I wanted to be really conservative with water, and I installed hose with a two-foot drip spacing for my squash and tomatoes. I was going to use Every Last Drop of water. While the plants were young, it was effective, but as they grew, the size of the irrigated area wasn’t enough to allow the roots to expand. Now I use an emitter spacing of no more than one foot. I use two different diameters of tubing: a one-half-inch tube and quarter-inch tube. The half-inch tube weeps at the rate of one gallon per hour per emitter hole. I put female and male hose fittings on it, and then I can hook an ordinary garden hose to it. I like to use a one-foot emitter spacing with this size of tubing, and each tube can run for at least a hundred feet, but it tends to kink around corners. The quarter-inch tube weeps at the rate of a half-gallon per hour per emitter, and is attached to supply tubing. I use an emitter spacing of six or nine inches. Quarter-inch tube is very flexible and doesn’t kink up like the larger tubing does, but each individual line must be fairly short, or the tube won’t be able to carry enough water for all the emitters. It’s ideal for raised beds. If you’ve a mathematical bent (I don’t), you can calculate exactly how much water you are applying. Most garden vegetables require about an inch of water per week. A gallon of water will cover 231 square inches, a little over one and a half square feet. If you calculate how many emitters are in the bed, and at what rate they flow, you can calculate precisely how much time you need to run the water in that bed. If my math is correct – which it may not be – if you had emitters on twelve-inch centers, weeping at a gallon per hour, you’d need to apply forty minutes of irrigation to that bed per week. This calculation assumes no rain, which is a valid assumption in Nevada. It also does not take into account factors like hot, dry winds, which increase demand for water. I am not mathematically inclined, so I use the finger method of watering. Every day, I poke my finger in each vegetable bed. If it’s drier than the plants should be, I irrigate it for ten minutes or so, longer for those “water deeply but infrequently” plants, such as larger trees and shrubs. I use the timer to remind me to switch the water. The only difficulty with that method is that sometimes when the timer rings, I can’t remember if I need to tend to the garden or take the bread out of the oven. BOOKREVIEW DYING TO BE ME MY JOURNEY FROM CANCER TO NEAR DEATH, TO TRUE HEALING By Anita Moorjani Forward by Wayne Dyer Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

A

nita Moorjani was born in Singapore of Indian parents, but grew up in Hong Kong, immersed in the Chinese culture. She attended an English Catholic school, so as a child she spoke Hindi, Cantonese and English. Because she was surrounded by three cultures, three different ways of looking at things, three types of expectations, she found herself not knowing who she was or how she should act. There were so many conflicts. Her Indian father, and the close-knit Indian community, expected her to get married and have children right away and to become “domesticated.” She was still expected to follow the tradition of an arranged marriage rather than enter the world of business, which is what she really wanted to do.

She desperately tried to fit in, and rebelled at going to Hindu school on the weekends to learn scriptures. She didn’t want to learn how to be more Indian; she wanted to fit in with the kids at school. The Chinese culture had even different beliefs about everything. Lots of emphasis was put on ancestors, making sure they were revered, and that a place at the table was always set for them. So, as Anita grew up, there were many questions and conflicts. As she grew older, she was not allowed to date like the other students in school. This was a great frustration for her, for again, she was not “fitting in.” Then came the time for her to be engaged. After she finished her training in a local photography school (she was not allowed to travel away from home to attend college), her parents chose different young men and their families, to invite to her home, to see if she liked them. This was terrifying to Anita, as she wanted to get a job and use her training. She played along as much as she could, as she did not want to disappoint her parents.

Because of her Hindu roots, she grew up to believe in karma and reincarnation, believing that the purpose of life is to raise one’s consciousness, and spiritually evolve through each cycle of birth and death to the point of reaching enlightenment. At that point, the cycle of birth and death is broken and there is no longer need to reincarnate into a flesh-and-blood body. That state is called nirvana. Thinking about this sometimes made her anxious, so she was careful not to do anything that could possibly create negative karma.

One of the matchmaking efforts did lead to an engagement. After meeting only twice, in the presence of relatives, Anita and the young man had to make a decision as to whether they wanted to get engaged before they could even see each other again. She felt attracted to this young man, so they agreed to make the commitment. Many traditional ceremonies were held as the wedding was planned, but over the months, she began to realize that she was not a good fit for this very traditional Indian family. She began to panic and finally broke down in tears and confessed to her mother that she couldn’t go through with it. Her mother was understanding, but relatives, family members and others in her community were saddened, angry and disappointed.

Also, as a child in Catholic school, she found the religious teachings there very different from the Hindu spiritual practices her parents followed. The nuns told her that she would not go to heaven if she continued to follow the Hindu religion. This conflict weighed heavily on her mind, until she found herself unable to sleep at night. Her mother explained that religion is not a truth, it’s just a path, and different people follow different paths. However, confronted daily with descriptions of the grim fate that awaits those who don’t go to heaven, she developed such an anxiety that her parents finally transferred her to a British school for the children of corporate executives, mostly from England and Europe.

Many came and tried to persuade her to go through with the wedding. They said that if she broke her commitment, no one else in the culture would want to marry her. Her name would be tarnished and no family would let their son near her. She felt terrible for disappointing everyone and finally fled Hong

She was a dark skinned, dark haired child among mostly blonde, blue-eyed children. She was called names and made fun of.

Kong to see old friends in England and India. In the meantime, some of her close friends had been diagnosed with cancer. As she did research on the disease, she began to develop a terrible fear of it. It seemed to strike without warning, and she began to feel that she could also be a possible victim of disease. She felt as though she couldn’t please anyone, that she was really a fish out of water.

The greatest gift I ever had came from God, and I call him Dad!

During this time, two things happened. Her father died suddenly of a heart attack and she met her true love, a young Indian man who actually wanted to marry someone with a mind of her own. They married and had a few happy years, but the conflicts within her eventually manifested as cancer. After four years of fighting Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, she went into a coma and was rushed to the hospital. By that time, she had no muscle strength whatsoever and could not even hold her head erect. Friends and family gathered, knowing that her organs had stopped functioning, and that the doctors did not expect her to live more than a few more hours. While in the coma she had an NDE (near death experience) and merged with an expanded, absolutely magnificent dimension of self awareness that showed her the causes of her illness, and reconnected her with deceased loved ones, including her father. He indicated to her that if she returned to this life, she would have a rapid recovery from the cancer and would be able to give the world a powerful message of unconditional acceptance and love for self and others. The actual information she remembered being communicated to her was, “Now that you know the truth of who you really are, go back and live your life fearlessly!” She knew she had free will to choose, and so decided to return.

Author Unknown

This cheerful return to consciousness shocked the medical personnel, as they had expected her to die; they kept her in the hospital for five more weeks, doing countless painful tests. Three days after awakening from the coma, all tumors in her body had become half their former size, and long before she was released, they simply disappeared. As she regained her strength, she continued to laughingly tell them that she knew she was healed, and that they were just doing the tests to convince themselves. This particular NDE is considered important enough to be written up on the Near Death Experience Research Foundation website at www.nderf.org, partly because of the medical records available. When Wayne Dyer heard of Anita’s story, he told her that if she’d write a book about her life and the experience with cancer, he’d write the forward to it and see that it got published. As a result, Hay House published her book in March 2012. Anita now travels extensively, speaking to groups about why she developed cancer, and encouraging everyone to “be yourself” and stop trying to do what everyone else expects; do what feels right for YOU. Her clarity and insight into what she experienced during her life, as well as during the NDE, and her articulate, brilliant command of English will hold you spellbound. HB

ASTROLOGY

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK VITAL, LIFE-GIVING IDEAS IN A TIME OF PROFOUND CHANGE Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | June - 2012

T

his is the month of the Venus transit of the Sun – a rare event that is the “Mayan factor” in this year that has been the subject of so much prophecy. If you happen to be in the right place on Earth, with the right viewing glasses (otherwise you’ll fry your eyes), you will be able to see Venus cut across the surface of the Sun. This is preceded by eclipses of the Sun and Moon on May 20 and June 4 respectively, and by plenty of other top-shelf rare cosmic activity, concentrated into a few weeks. I have just one suggestion: pay attention to what you believe. More than any other factor, what we believe dictates what we experience as reality. It does not dictate what is true--only what we experience as true. These events are all magnifiers of thought and experience in their own way, and the more life-affirming, creative and loving our beliefs, the more they will be magnified into reality. unfold. As you do this, you may have the feeling that an outside force of some kind is working on you, though that’s an illusion. It’s very much an inner momentum that is carrying you, and certain outer circumstances that are facilitating your process. It’s essential that you see the usefulness of your environment, and take the opportunities that it presents to you, because they are every bit as synchronous as what is going on inside you.

Aries (March 20-April 19) You have a more central role in upcoming events than you may think, though I suggest you make every effort to define that in terms of service. You may feel an urge to provoke events, or fear that you’re going to be unduly influenced by them. It would be more helpful, and personally beneficial, if you were to take the role of guardian. Study the various situations around you with some vigilance and notice, in particular, where you may serve as a negotiator. In that context, your job is to look out for everyone’s interests, as objectively as you can. You may be inclined to stick to laws or regulations as your guide, though what’s more likely is that you come up with a solution to a puzzle everyone else thinks is impossible to solve – which in the end benefits everyone.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) Going deeper into your relationships is starting to come naturally to you, depending on one basic approach: being more yourself. Gradually over time, this has worn down your resistance to expressing and receiving actual feelings, as well as what seemed like the resistance of others in their approach to you. Now something else is emerging: healing an inner split that you may be discovering, even as it resolves itself. Indeed, the discovery is the sign that you’re making the progress on healing, so you have no need to worry about it. The reunion of you with yourself will manifest most noticeably in your relationships, where old problems with attachment, dependency and overuse of structure will seem to melt away. Though this transition might not happen overnight, it has started already – and you’re close to the tipping point.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) You don’t have to be in as much conflict as you are. You don’t need to accept what other people say is right for you, or the rules that they impose on you, which might seem to be the source of your inner tension. It’s easy to go there by default when your own inner guidance conflicts, or when you’re uncertain about what you want. This thing we call religion, by the way, is about people giving up their power of choice, then imposing that on others, and that seems to be a quickly fading influence right now. This is the moment when you take control of your desires. That means not letting them run you, not feeling guilty and most of all, resolving any conflicting values that might be present in your heart. As these weeks progress, you will find this more compelling, necessary and eminently possible.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Is there a difference between your public presentation and the person you are in private? It’s considered normal to live with this kind of split – even a right. But is it possible for a person to split his or her character? The mere attempt takes a lot of energy, and it’s a breeding ground for suspicion. Now is the time to align your motives, your desires and how you present yourself in public. Now is the time to have just one story about who you are, what you want and what you do. That story is the true story. I recognize that people have misgivings about speaking up sincerely, and can take that as evidence that there’s something wrong with them. If indeed there is something you actually cannot say, it would be a very good idea to stop and question your ethics. If the ethics check out, then feel free to speak up.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) You seem to be trying desperately to let go of an old concept of yourself, so that you can embrace something entirely new. You have chosen the right moment to do this. Here’s the thing to remember: do less, not more. You cannot aggressively release something; letting go is always gentle. You don’t need to push yourself open; you merely need to allow yourself to gradually

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You may have several different goals, and several key talents – though your professional life has a way of proceeding on two distinct tracks. This may leave you feeling like you’re never quite focusing 100 percent and therefore never getting the full results of your efforts. Yet consider that these two paths may be supporting one another, rather than competing with one another. You have developed your brain more fully, and have learned the skill of experiencing yourself from two distinct perspectives. Now is the time to experience the power of synergy – the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. That is to say, the whole of who you are is greater than the particular skills or attributes that you possess – and this is about to be demonstrated to you in a bold way.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) You are changing in ways that you feel but have not necessarily put a name or a clear description to. Actually changing is too weak of a word to describe what is happening; an unusual momentum of growth has taken over your life, and it’s now moving at full strength. What you’re doing is penetrating a kind of emotional veil that was cloaking your true strength from yourself. This is allowing you to emerge as someone who may have been clear to you as a child, but who was gradually fogged over as you became an adult. A simple way to express this idea is that your soul is pushing its way through the layers of your personality and into manifestation. This will not happen all at once, though you’re about to take a very significant step along the way.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) Conflicting beliefs are one of the world’s most toxic causes of anxiety. Conflicting belief systems make it even worse – such as if you try to follow the dictates of science, religion and your family all at the same time. Yet I would take it further – the notion of a belief is the thing that we need to question, and your astrology is putting this issue under a microscope. Deep beneath all of these beliefs, there is something that’s true for you. You might think of it as your true cosmic religion – your actual point of contact with existence, which is not about believing anything. Indeed, it transcends anything as flimsy as something anyone could be convinced of. At the core of this is your knowledge of who you are, which is the source of your strength and confidence. And some tangible, life-giving information from this core being is on its way.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) My old friend B’jamin once said that there are two kinds of people – those who drink water, and those who do not. We could probably write a whole book about all the ways there are ‘two kinds of people’, though the one that’s germane in your life right now is: people who are into art, and people who are not. There is the you who’s into art, and the you who’s not. Here is what your charts say: get into art. Get into people who are into art. Soak in art, soak in artists, and light your mind on fire and create the stuff. Don’t worry if it’s good. Just get busy with color, shape, form, sound and sensation. It might save your life; but really, it will make your life. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) The whole planet is your home. Yes, this whole beautiful, crazy place – and everyone who’s here is your brother or your sister. If you’ve ever had any doubts about whether you want to be here, get over them now. If you’ve ever hesitated to fully commit yourself to stewarding this place, and being of service to the people who populate it, open your heart and give yourself over to your life purpose. You get to choose how you do this work; how you offer yourself, and what you develop. What does not change is your sense of contact with existence and with your underlying purpose for existing in this place and this time. In doing this with passion, you’re not giving anything up – in truth you will gain everything, particularly the confidence that can only come with an authentic sense of belonging. HB

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) You have two possible modes of action right now – quietly, from the background, and boldly, from within your ideas. Yet they have one thing in common: the less you assert yourself, the more influential you will be. Even when you’re directly offering an idea or explicit instructions, lie back a little and let people come to you; allow them to feel the effects of your presence. Another way to say this: you don’t have to do much, or anything at all. Plenty is in motion around you. You’re having a profound influence on your environment from several different angles. They almost all involve processes you set in motion a long time ago. If you’re going to do one thing boldly, this is what I suggest: evaluate one particular contractual situation carefully, and make sure that everyone benefits.

THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Let the bravery and innovation of the people around you be your inspiration and your guide. You have a lot to learn from them, and you’re blessed to know a few people who are truly doing innovative things. I suggest you concern yourself less with your own originality (that will take care of itself, in the end) and more with learning how others do things, especially when you notice they do them well. Observe the skills involved and the spirit of the endeavor. You understand by now that many of your most significant relationships are working partnerships, and if not that directly, ones in which ideas are exchanged. This is a perfectly viable purpose for other people in your life. Romance is severely overrated; dharma, or the path of correct action, deserves far more reverence than it gets.

New Anti-inflammatory First Aid

Discover a Healthier Family

Written By JeanAnn Fitzgerald Continued from Page 21

While more than 100 amino acids occur in nature, the eight essential (must be ingested) to human health are leucine, isoleucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, valine, (and histidine for children). The nonessential (can be made by our bodies) aminos are alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cystine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, ornithine, proline, and serine. ImSaids are comprised of the amino acids DL-phenylalanine, glutamine and glycine. The specific action of these three amino acids combined appears to be the disruption of leukocyte migration into body tissues, resulting in a lower rate of free radical production and oxidative damage. By itself, glutamine shortens the healing time for ulcers. Glycine is called the wound healer because of its anti-microbial quality. It is an effective treatment for gastric over-activity and low blood PH. Mixed 50/50 with aspirin it decreases the harmful effects of aspirin. Patients who benefit greatly are postoperative, burn and trauma. Additionally, it increases the absorption of DL-phenylalanine. Among other things, DL-phenylalanine produces and activates morphine-like hormones called endorphins, which intensify and prolong the body’s own natural pain killing responses to injury and disease. People with chronic pain have lower levels of these endorphins. Since DL phenylalanine can restore normal endorphin levels, it can help the body reduce pain naturally without drugs. Because L-phenylalanine selectively blocks pain, it alleviates long term discomfort while leaving the body’s natural defense mechanisms for injuries intact. This amino acid has been used to treat osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, low back and joint pain, menstrual cramps, whiplash, and migraines. DL-phenylalanine offers non-addictive pain relief that becomes more effective over time; it has antidepressant qualities, and can be combined with other medication without adverse interaction. As an integral part of the body, there are no known toxic levels for any of the amino acids. Relief may occur in a few days, or up to a month. While building up the three-amino acid compound stores in the body, the glycine and glutamine would help prevent and heal any ulcers occurring due to inflammation blockers, until the aminos take full effect.

The Health Benefits of the Human-Animal Bond

M

any organizations, centers, and educational facilities around the world are presently studying the humananimal bond and the complex relationships we share. People’s attitudes toward animals and their treatment have undergone dramatic shifts in the last twenty years, and that change is the driving force for global reassessment of the important role animals play.

The western medical field is beginning to share the belief that our relational connection to our animals can actually heal us. Most of the research and statistical studies thus far have been about dogs and cats, but it is understood that all pet companions--furry, feathered, or scaled--have the positive potential to bridge directly to our immune system. It is the chemical and psychological shift in our mind, body, heart and spirit that is affected, whether we are combing a guinea pig, looking directly into the wide, moist eyes of our golden retriever, or handling our pet boa constrictor. As Dr. Marty Becker wrote in his book, The Healing Power of Pets, “Basically we’re talking about the support systems cleverly disguised as pets.” HB

At a time when psychology, sociology, and politics have sucked the spontaneity out of human relations, the simplicity of our affection with pets is a model for the smaller, intimate moments that really sustain us. Without those ties that bind--the bonds of love, friendship, responsibility, and dependence--we gradually begin to whither away. It is our bonds that keep us healthy. . . against the backdrop of forced and awkward contact with the world, the regularity of that wagging tail and the unconditional affection of your pets brings you instantly out of isolation. You stop rattling around inside your own head, and focus on what they give you--simply and for free.

For the Love of Bandit Written By Melody I dropped my mouth. Dogs don’t lie. He was WALKING! I wouldn’t have believed it, if I hadn’t seen it. Even the doctor was surprised. He said most people didn’t bring the dog in as quickly as I did, and he expected the result to have taken a little longer, several weeks perhaps. We took him back again the third time. This time, Bandit was acting like he was in a hurry to get back to that chamber. The way he was walking seemed to say, “get me my oxygen, get me my oxygen.” He was happy as a clam when he was inside that thing. For me, just looking at it made me feel claustrophobic.

We got Bandit as a puppy. I trained him to be my hearing dog. At one and a half years, Bandit just fell over during play, and couldn’t get up. Of course I was upset at the time, not knowing what happened to the little guy. He had a lot of will to want to get up and walk, but couldn’t. We ended up taking him to a vet, who suggested taking X rays, because we though Bandit broke his back. We took Bandit and he ended up getting acupuncture and adjustments. We saw very minimal change. We heard about a shot for spinal patients and thought we would have to take Bandit to UC Davis, as it was still in clinical trials. We were told we wouldn’t make it, it was costly and there were side effects.

Bandit did have a minor set-back, so we continued taking him for his adjustment and acupuncture, about six more times. We are not sure what happened, could have been a disc or cartilage, but it was a stroke-like situation. I would say after the treatments, he was 95 percent better. We would help Bandit on our bed, as he couldn’t jump, and when he decided he wanted on the bed, he would hold his cute little paw out as to say “help me on the bed,” with a big smile. As time wore on, he finally could jump up on his own. This little guy is such a good dog. He thinks he owns the house. I told Bandit he can go out, get a job and bring home the bacon.

After calling different vet doctors regarding the shot, we came across Carson Valley Medical. They mentioned the Hyperbaric chamber. It was late, and I wanted to follow the same concept of the “72 hours” while the accident happened in its fresh stage to take him to the Carson Valley medical Vet. I was skeptical about the hyperbaric, but I thought ok, the Navy Seals invented this and it was not going to be bad for Bandit. So, late at night and as tired as we were, we took the dog there. After the first treatment, we saw minimal results on his left paw. I think Bandit appreciated us helping him do his business as he could not walk. He was no exactly a light lifting dog. But, I was so sad to see him in the bathtub not able to move much and wondered if he was going to be ok. The next day we took him back. The Vet suggested four hours total, within three days. After the second time, Bandit was wheeled in and he was walking out of the hyperbaric chamber.

I think people should be aware of the hyperbaric chamber as an alternative to help their dogs. There are a lot of clinical trials where the hyperbaric chamber is being used; as well as for wound healing, diabetic treatment, etc. Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed my story. Bandit says Woof, Woof!

SUPPLEMENTS101

seeds, packed with silymarin, a potent flavonoid complex with pharmacological benefits to the liver. Silymarin prevents toxins from breaking through cell membranes and entering the cells where they could otherwise cause damage. It even neutralizes toxic substances that do manage to penetrate cells. Because of this complex, milk thistle helps rebuild damaged liver cells, actually returning them to functional health. It works as an antioxidant complex that prevents damage to healthy liver cells and stimulates regeneration of damaged liver cells.

MILK THISTLE: REVERSING LIVER DAMAGE Written By Kevin Vania

Milk thistle has been used as a hepatic folk medicine for centuries. The earliest people to use and write about milk thistle were first-century Greek and Roman naturalists. The herb was further recommended by doctors from the Middle Ages well into the nineteenth century.

s Americans living in an industrialized nation, we are inevitably exposed to many harsh toxins every day. Luckily, our bodies are naturally able to cope with exposure to most toxins. All of the toxins we ingest are filtered through the liver, which basically keeps the bad stuff from entering the bloodstream. However, if the toxins are more than our livers can handle, liver cells are destroyed, liver function can decline, and the entire liver can eventually shut down. Without our livers, we cannot survive. So why do we subject our bodies to chemical substances that could substantially shorten our lives?

After falling out of favor in the twentieth century, milk thistle’s reputation as a liver-protecting homeopath was revived only in recent years. 1970’s German researchers at the University of Munich were able to validate its reputation as a hepatic folk medicine by conducting a series of studies on rats. The studies showed that feeding rats a slow-acting liver-destroying chemical killed 100 percent of the rats in 130 days, but when the rats simultaneously received an intake of milk thistle, 70 percent of them survived.

A

Another interesting example of how scientists know milk thistle certainly works is that it saved the lives of many people who were poisoned by the deadly amanita mushroom, or the “death cap.” In 1981, a German researcher named Dr. G. Vogel of the University of Munich conducted a study on 49 patients who had all been poisoned by the mushroom. Ordinarily the death rate from the amanita mushroom is 30 to 40 percent. The patients were all given daily injections of milk thistle’s active chemicals, and the death rate dropped to zero. Not a single patient in the study died!

Because, whether we are conscious of it or not, many of these toxins are prevalent everywhere we go. Environmental chemicals, air pollutants, pesticides, auto exhaust, prescription and nonprescription drugs, and alcohol are all hazardous contaminants that can be detrimental to our health when introduced to our bodies. Alcohol is our livers’ number one enemy and it is responsible for 80 percent of all liver disease in the United States and other Western countries. Other common drugs that can damage our livers include cholesterol-lowering medications, acetaminophen (Advil and Tylenol), and antidepressants.

Since the 70’s, more than 200 studies suggest that milk thistle is an effective homeopathic therapy for various liver diseases, and it has been shown to help heal forms of hepatitis and slow down progression of the disease cirrhosis. Cirrhosis causes about 30,000 deaths in the United States annually, and it is a disease for which few pharmaceutical drugs do any good at all.

You may have concerns about potential liver damage, especially if you drink more alcohol than you should. So, if the damage is done, how can we fix it? Is there a natural homeopathic remedy that can actually reverse liver damage? Yes, there is!

Milk thistle is shown to soften the liver-damaging effects of many drugs, and it even appears protective against the liver toxicity of acetaminophen.

Your liver-repairing remedy is milk thistle. Milk thistle (silybum marianum), also referred to as the Marian thistle, St. Mary’s thistle, or Our Lady’s thistle, is a weed belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is a thistle topped by a prickly purplish flower containing small hard fruits that resemble

States. The extract usually comes as a pill or capsule and is recommended in doses from 200 mg to 400 mg daily. Less than one percent of users experience mild side effects, such as upset stomach. In severe cases of liver damage, improvements such as a reduction in enzymes and liver size are often noticeable in just five to eight days of taking milk thistle.

References:

Milk thistle can be especially great for those working around hazardous chemicals, and even those who just want to do something restorative for their bodies (and their livers) as they age. Milk thistle has great potential for use in complementary and alternative treatments to improve your health. HB
