COVERSTORY

T

he month of March seems to be a bit calmer than others, regarding holidays and such. Although for many, St. Patrick’s Day is a joyous day of celebration, including anything Irish related, the color green and of course, many choose to imbibe particular whiskies or green beer. This issue of HB Magazine, however, draws from a different source: Water. On March 22nd, many will recognize World Water Day. Also, the majority of March covers the astrological sign of Pisces, which happens to be a water sign.

ater, a true provider of life…it is the blood of our earth. Interestingly enough, the earth and our body are both mainly comprised of water. Even human blood is mostly water. Besides biology and geology, water plays an important role in our modern lives.

You will notice several articles and columns that pertain to water, covering topics such as bottled water, water filtration and water-friendly gardening.

We bathe in it, drink it, clean with it, cook with it, swim in it, and the list goes on. Think about this, how would you function on a daily basis without water? How would you do your laundry, make your coffee or flush the toilet?

From my point of view, I consider myself a “water baby,” as I grew up swimming, skiing and ice skating on lakes…and making snowmen, downhill and cross country skiing on snow. I am also a water sign, astrologically speaking, hence my innate connection to its general current.

There are also many ceremonial and religious aspects of this translucent “lifeblood”…we “wash away our sins,” or become baptized with water, as It is thought to clean, purify and nourish the soul. From a philosophical view, water is the origin of all life. It is also considered a major element that unites, transforms and creates harmony.

With that, we hope you find this issue stimulating…and enjoy its flow. HB

No matter how you look at it, water is all around us, in many forms. This month, try looking at how water is important to you, and how it affects your life. You might even find that just as the ebb and flow of water portrays the mood of the sea, it quite possibly does the same for you. HB

ProviderProfile Provider Profile Teresa Aramini, Level II Reiki Practitioner Written By Matt Larson

A

merican medical practices are, for the most part, pretty black and white. Get sick--get examined--get medicated. Eastern medicine takes a slightly different approach, looking at a person holistically and taking other factors into consideration, such as emotional stress and energy blockage. But just because this holistic gray area is often overlooked in our medical practices, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a look of our own. Reiki is an excellent example of how to get the best of both worlds.

In November, 2009, Aramini was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Two close friends of hers recommended she try Reiki. “I went to my first Reiki treatment completely in a place of fear, beside myself, afraid that I might not live…and I experienced the most comfort and relaxation from it!” She began practicing it on herself throughout her cancer treatment, and has been doing it ever since. Now, cancer-free, she says, “It’s really changed my life.” While this may not be the case for everyone, Aramini can tell you one thing about her patients: “When they’re finished, they do have a sense of well-being. They do feel relaxed and calm,” she says. “I don’t think most people leave their doctors’ offices with that sensation at all.”

“Fundamentally, what Reiki does is it creates balance in the body,” says Teresa Aramini, Reiki Practitioner of Reno Tahoe Reiki. “Once the body starts to get calm, relaxed and balanced, then the healing starts to occur.” Reiki targets the same Chakras and meridian lines as acupuncture; the main difference is that hands are used instead of needles. “As the hands go on these parts of the body, the energy starts to move,” Aramini says. “Most people literally start to feel the movement of energy in their body.”

Reiki works for people of all ages, even children, but they don’t need as much work. “Generally, children deal with their issues right away,” Aramini says. “It’s not uncommon if a kid has their feelings hurt and starts crying right away. As adults we don’t do that. We hold that stuff in and that creates energy blocks.” Once a mother brought her little boy in for treatment; he was very rambunctious. “Within five minutes he started to stop fidgeting and lie there calmly,” says Aramini. After the 10-minute session he asked: “Do you ever just take naps in here? I feel really relaxed!” His mother, in shock, responds to Aramini, “He hates naps…”

Physiologically, Reiki causes the parasympathetic nervous system to start secreting hormones and enzymes, such as serotonin, which allow the body to relax. “When we get into that state we have our own pharmacy in our body that kicks in and things start to heal,” Aramini explains. “That’s why Reiki works so effectively. It’s really relying on the wisdom of the body, instead of forcing the body to do something it’s not wanting to do.” Medicine, while often effective, is a practice of forcing the body against its impulses.

Children may take to Reiki more naturally than adults because they don’t really question it and just go with the flow; an open mind is essential for a true Reiki experience. “It’s not for everybody,” says Aramini. “It’s not my goal to change anybody’s opinion. I hope that I can help people the way I’ve been helped. It’s changed my life and I want to show people that it can maybe change their lives as well.”

“There’s certainly a place where western medicine comes into play and is absolutely important,” Aramini asserts. “Somebody who has a physical ailment that a drug will help them with should certainly be taking it.” But she wants to emphasize that there are other options, like Reiki, to utilize as well. “Not everybody wants to have to take another pill,” she says. “And Reiki will not interfere with any medications for treatments that are being prescribed by a physician.”

T

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

Four Problems With Our Brains That Cause Us To Make Dumb Decisions We humans do many stupid things. But sometimes it’s not our fault, it’s just how our brains naturally function. LisaMarie Luccioni, a professor at the University of Cincinnati, and PsyBlog write about four things humans are inclined to do that cause us to make poor decisions.

1. We Treat Inferences as Facts Inferences are conclusions we draw from observations. The problem is that observations aren’t always spot on.

Reduce Stress • Anxiety Fatigue • Chronic Pain Free Intro night Wednesday March 14 · 6-8pm Contact today 775.322.8181 equilibrium-mbsr.com

Have you ever met someone, internally decided you weren’t a fan, and then realized you actually could benefit from them? Maybe they were someone high up in your industry you didn’t recognize, or someone who works for a company you just applied to. Either way, you just lost out. To beat this instinct, always dig for more facts before making judgments. You know what happens when you assume...

2. Polarized Thinking What’s the first thing that pops in your head when you hear the word “left?” Most people instantly think “right.” That’s because humans have a tendency to view things as extremes; we see the world in black and white, rather than shades of gray. We’re naturally drawn toward one side or another, which can make us bad at compromising. Psychology Today’s solution? “Be alert to polarized wording, framing, and thinking, especially when processing political arguments and debate.”

3. Intentional Orientation LisaMarie Luccioni at Psychology Today defines intentional orientation as, “viewing people, objects, and events in terms of labels rather than how they actually exist or operate.” In other words, people stereotype. She likens this to teachers grading papers. If a teacher sees a student’s name before grading a paper, he or she may be biased when reading it. This student got an A on her last test, her paper must be good. To solve this problem, Luccioni says to “react to current merits of work.”

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a way of learning to become aware of whatever is happening in this moment. By developing this skill it is possible to begin to take charge of one’s own life by simply noticing what is happening in the mind and body while it is happening. • Stress, Anxiety or Panic Attacks • Work, Family, and Financial Stress • Sleep Problems • Fatigue • Heart Disease • Chronic Pain • Skin Disorder

4. Reading is Believing When you read something, like a provocative headline, your brain is automatically programmed to believe it, even if it isn’t true. “Believing is not a two-stage process involving first understanding then believing,” writes Jeremy Dean of PsyBlog. “Instead understanding is believing, a fraction of a second after reading it, you believe it until some other critical faculty kicks in to change your mind.”

• Headaches • Fibromyalgia • High Blood Pressure • Asthma • Cancer • GI Distress

The next time you read something that sounds a little outlandish, take time to absorb it and then question the material. *Read more at: http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-03-10/strategy/29997196_1_reading-paper-processing#ixzz1lcSm2pDI.

• The Federal government does not mandate that bottled water be any safer than tap water--the chemical pollution standards are nearly identical. In fact, bottled water is less regulated than tap water. • Close to half of all bottled water is sourced from municipal tap water (Yup, the same stuff that comes out of your faucet). • It takes an estimated 2,000 times more energy to produce bottled water than to produce an equivalent amount of tap water. • Production and transportation of bottled water in the US consumes more than 30 million barrels of oil each year and produces as much carbon dioxide as two million cars.

Bottled Up: The truth about bottled water

• Plastic water bottles are the fastest growing form of municipal solid waste in the United States, co tributing nearly four billion pounds to landfills, annually! Continued on Page 26

f you looked at the label of a food product and it included no ingredient list, and no information about where the ingredients were sourced or how they were processed, would you want to consume that product? Most of us who have even a little bit of concern about what we put in our bodies would most likely answer this question with a resounding “no!” Yet, if you consume bottled water that is exactly what you are doing: consuming a product that gives little to no clear information about its quality or safety. Every 27 hours Americans consume enough bottled water to circle the earth’s equator in its entirety, with plastic bottles stacked end to end. In just one week, those bottles would stretch more than halfway to the moon! How did we wind up in this predicament? Bottled water companies have more or less succeeded in convincing Americans that bottled water is far superior to tap water. However, they fail to disclose essential facts about their products, such as the geographical location of the water’s source, and test results that would confirm this water’s so-called “purity”. A 2011 study by the Environmental Working Group shares some other facts that the bottled water industry would rather its consumers not know:

Functional Diagnostic Medicine: find out the truth behind your chronic pain.

Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B

in this country today is designed to assess acute disease and pain pathology (i.e., trauma, infection, cancer, cardiac arrest, etc) and not the chronic cousins of these conditions. There are 116 million chronic pain sufferers in the US, and the FDM practitioner understands that these patients are a long way from being in a state of “normal”--no less optimum health. The FDM practitioner also understands the average chronic pain sufferer is not doomed to a life of uncontrolled pain or medication mediated controlled relief.

T

he main focus of the functional diagnostic medicine practitioner is to utilize an organized approach to assess the nine major systems of the body (nervous, gastrointestinal, endocrinological, immune, etc), and treat the underlying causes of the many chronic diseases that our patients suffer from. Functional Diagnostic Medicine (FDM) is patient-focused, not disease-focused. For instance, you are not treating the patient’s rheumatoid arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, etc., you are instead assessing the above mentioned nine systems for weaknesses and imbalances in the patient’s biochemistry and physiology to try and understand why the patient has RA. The functional medicine doctor is like the Sherlock Holmes of the brain and body, discovering and correcting the underlying cause of a disease process or dysfunction, so the body can in turn return to a state of health and wellness and the patient can achieve the desired reduction or elimination of symptoms.

The FDM doctor also understands there are cutting edge, unique, specialized, interpretive, and diagnostic methods for the chronic pain patient that are not used in the standard “acute pain” approach; which, can help assess a wide range of problems that are more suggestive of sub-clinical or functional problems causing and leading to disease. FDM is about utilizing the best of all diagnostic procedures to become the ultimate medical detective to help this chronic pain population. The main role of the functional medicine practitioner: 1. The prevention of disease and function by examining and focusing on the major risk factors of mortality and morbidity. a. Identifying risk factors that can be reduced or avoided (i.e., avoid the consumption of trans fatty acids). b. Making the patient aware that they have risks for developing a particular “disease” (i.e., family history of cardiovascular disease or type II diabetes).

Typically the FDM patient comes to the office after years of pain and frustration having been told that everything looks normal based on “standard” tests routinely run by their primary and specialist doctors. They have been told that there’s no cure, or at least no known reason for their symptoms.

c. Making patient aware that they are at risk for developing disease because of exposure to certain environmental agents (i.e., advising a woman with polycystic ovarian disease that working 40 hours a week in a print shop may be a strong perpetuator of her disease problem).

FDM practitioners understand that most of our patients who arrive in their offices are by no means “normal,” even by standard diagnostic models. This is because the standard model

approach is focused on restoring the patient’s physiological function, which allows the body to restore to a state of wellness and reduce and/or eliminate symptoms. Lastly, FDM is to cause no harm to the patient.

FDM should reduce long term costs as chronic pain management costs are substantial and are the primary drain on the current medical system. FDM patients should also experience reduced suffering and increase the likelihood of a resolution of pain without medications, and lastly reduce the incidence of premature aging, mortality, and morbidity. From Tahoe City to Truckee: Three Eateries that Make Your Mouth Water

unpretentious café offers indoor and outdoor seating, weatherpermitting.

Restaurant Review Written By Rachael L. Scala

You won’t find better tasting or higher quality coffee anywhere in the region. Roasted exclusively for CoffeeBar by Carl Staub, their brew is the highest classification of organic available: C1 Grade, meaning there are no more than three secondary defects per 300g. All house coffee is from a French-press, not an autodrip machine, and each shot is made to be consistently smooth and bold in the likeness of Italian espresso. You’ll find drinks such as a Lemon Chiffon Latte or cold-extracted Iced Toddy coffee. Their latte art further testifies to each barista’s will and skill to create outstanding beverages.

It’s Saturday morning. Your stomach rumbles because you’re (hungry) and excited for some Sierra Nevada therapy, in whatever form that may be. Perhaps you are a Tahoe native, already proud of the variety of local dining options. Or, you live in the Bay and plan to visit friends in the area. You know you’ll be eating out at some point, but you want to make it count, saving for something that comes from a food source that doesn’t plague your conscience or dietary needs. Check out the following three gems--and be sure to stop by at least one next time you’re nearby.

If the drinks aren’t enough to entice you, allow yourself time to pour over the menu, which offers made-to-order paninis, crêpes, salads, homemade gelato, and several other specialties. Gluten-free pastries and seasonal quiches from the local Whole Treats grace the bakery case. Vegetarian options abound, including the hearty Campagna Panini (Spinach, zucchini, eggplant caponata, tomato, red onion and smoked Mozzarella with roasted garlic aioli on herb Focaccia). Meats and cheeses are also artisanally made, meaning they are at times imported, or if possible, obtained from a local source. Water, Water, Everywhere A Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

re there different “types” of water to drink? The answer is a resounding YES! Are certain types better to drink for your health than others? The answer is again, a resounding YES!

UCLA Medical Center tested every water product on the market because they wondered which water would give the best blood flow to the extremities, since your blood is 94 percent water. Their report concluded that “No one can argue with something you can measure non-invasively by Doppler ultrasound to determine the ability of the blood to get into the extremities. Nothing even comes close to your water.” This is great news for people with poor circulation.

There are many kinds of water filters and machines out there. Many of them will tell you that drinking water from their machines or filters will improve your health in various different ways. The truth is that the vast majority of them can produce no proof of these claims. The one machine that can produce this, is one made by an engineer in New York named John Ellis.

There is a term called the “Solubility-Energy Ratio” that has to do with the ability of the cells to get nutrients in and waste products out. Solubility has been shown to increase with the hydrogen bond angle. At the relatively low bond angle of 104 degrees, ordinary water has low solubility. After this process, the hydrogen angle increases to 114 degrees and produces these dramatic changes.

The machine he designed holds both national and international patents. It uses a combination of steam, ultraviolet light and ozone to not only produce the purest water on the planet, but to actually change the properties of the water. It changes the angle between the two hydrogen molecules in H2O. The change of the angle between the two hydrogen molecules, from 104 to 114 degrees, seems inconsequential at first, but it has been proven to dramatically improve the solubility of the water into and out of your cell membranes. The machine changes this angle by taking the water from vapor to liquid, about 300 times per gallon from a boiler through a condenser, and exposes it to ultraviolet light that produces ozone gas along the way.

When used in a therapeutic setting, these changes in solubility can improve clinical outcomes by providing a better vehicle for drugs, supplements and remedies to get where they are needed to do their job. GO GREEN: GROW

o you remember the old saying, “YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT”? It’s true. So, it’s time to consider all the things you put into your body. If you’re looking to get healthier, or to stay that way, then you need to consume good, healthy produce. There are so many reasons to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day; in fact, most people don’t eat enough each day. A growing body of research proves that fruits and vegetables are critical to promoting good health. Fruits and vegetables should be the foundation of a healthy diet, and most people need to double the amount of fruits and vegetables they eat every day.

• One small glass (150ml) of unsweetened 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice. Juice counts as a maximum of one portion, regardless of how much you drink. • A side salad.

Do remember that some fruits contain many of their nutrients just under the skin, so eating them with the skin on can provide greater nutritional benefits and the maximum amount of fiber, compared with just drinking the juice of the same fruit.

Fruits and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, fiber, and disease-fighting phytochemicals. Because of this, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables everyday can help reduce your risk of: Heart disease, high blood pressure, type two diabetes, certain cancers, and much more. They’re low in calories and high in fiber, so fruits and vegetables can help you control your weight. By eating more fruits and vegetables, and fewer high-calorie foods, you’ll find it much easier to control your weight. We need to be taking in at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day or more for proper nutrition. So how much is a portion? • One piece of medium-sized fruit, such as an apple, peach, banana or orange. • One slice of fruit, such as melon, mango or pineapple. • One handful of grapes or two handfuls of cherries or berry fruits. • One heaping tablespoon of dried fruit.

How can you get fresh fruits and veggies all year long, without the expense of a green house? There is one way to Go Green and get healthy. The Tower Garden works through the bases of hydroponics and aeroponics, which is a method of cultivating plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. The bottom of the tower holds a water reserve tank with nutrients. A small, low-wattage electric water pump transports the water to the top of the tower and descends by gravity, irrigating the plants and returning to the bottom tank. The plants grow out of small holes in the tower. A person can plant lettuce, herbs, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower, Swiss chard, cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, and herbs – just about anything they desire. The Tower Garden can save you hundreds of dollars a year in healthy food that is also clean, safe, pesticide-free, and highly nutritious. Vegetables will grow in about half the time they would normally take in the soil! There is no weeding, tilling, kneeling, or getting dirty! There is no need to have a “green thumb.

It’s about planting seeds that empower others to grow healthy individuals and strong, healthy families. Then together we can feed and nurture healthier, sustainable communities. Chronic Fatigue – Fibromyalgia Part 4: case histories Written By Michael Gerber MD, HMD

W.A., a 48 year old very pleasant female had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia since 1981. I had treated her for about two years, with modest success. She had Trichinella spiralis (pork worms) successfully treated with Albendazole, moderate yeast, extremely low total Intestinal SIgA and sensitivity to many common foods. After many tries at different regimens, we checked the MTHFR SNP, methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase single nucleotide polymorphism blood test which was positive for a single mutation of A1298C. Basically, this means she lacks the genetic capability for normal methylation (CH3) involved in hundreds of metabolic processes in the human body. After supplementation with three mg of hydroxycobalamin IM, twice per week, with five mg of folinic acid orally daily, she was transformed. She had many good days, before she had none and no muscle pain. Methylation is an extremely deep issue and is abnormal in many of our chronic patients. A.D., a 42 year old female had a many year history of CFS, fibromyalgia, migraine headache, insomnia, much recent grief and loss and hypertension. She could sleep all day. I was her eighth doctor she had consulted. After starting all my above regimens, she was completely improved. She said she was, “amazed at how good I feel” in two weeks. She wondered what the most important thing, I asked was? It was the gluten! All of her joint and muscle pain returned after eating a pizza and didn’t resolve for about three days. She now sleeps well, has no headaches or pain, and great energy. It is not always this easy, but we love a good miracle. D.C., a 57 year old female with total body pain, diagnosed with fibromyalgia, severe fatigue and migraine headaches had been out of work for several years and basically stayed in bed most of the time. She survived on Soma, hydrocodone, Valium, Klonopin and Imitrex. She had multiple surgeries in her history, including total hysterectomy, lumbar spine fusion at L3-4 and suffered from anxiety and depression, mental breakdown,

migraine headaches, and she was scheduled for another back surgery in one month. During her first visit, I started the adrenal complex weekly IM shots, Neurotransmiter supportive IV (vitamins, minerals and amino acids) and Neural Therapy injections to her abdominal scars, back scars, root canal teeth( buccal membranes) and then lumbar spine injections with procaine, Discus Compositum, Zeel and ozone, which relieved her pain greatly. In the first two weeks she titrated her thyroid up to one grain and commenced estradiol gel with EstroDIM, progesterone, testosterone gel, Isocorts, Vitamin C and magnesium glycinate. EBV turned up on our EAV scan and we treated her SP-6 acupuncture points (Spleen-6 is four fingerbreadths above the medial maleolus of the ankle) with 12 days of homeopathic injections of EBV dilutions ( 12x through 200x) with Engystol from Heel. Two week later she said “I am definitely better, everyone says so, even my husband who hates spending money, and my old boss tells me to continue this new therapy because I look so much better and have more energy.” Although she was still anxious and had some back pain, her overall body pain had disappeared, and she had new hope for recovery and postponed her repeat back surgery because she was so improved. It is tragic how many people are so sick and damaged in our society. However, it is most gratifying when we can help those suffering from CFS and fibromyalgia. HB References: 1. Dosch, M.D., Peter. Simply Music: A New Way Of S

Written By Ann Whitney

imply Music is a remarkable, Australian-developed piano and keyboard program that offers a breakthrough in music education. This unique method has children, teens, adults and seniors, playing great sounding blues, classical, contemporary and accompaniment pieces–-immediately--from their very first lessons. This Simply Music approach focuses on the fun and sheer pleasure of playing music. The “hands-on” nature of the program, and the immediate results that are produced, actively dispel the notion that learning to play means enduring years of lessons, boring practice sessions and relentless hours of drills. HOW SIMPLY MUSIC DEVELOPED: When Neil Moore, the creator of Simply Music, was a boy, he did not play the piano the way his teacher thought he should. Rather than read music, he listened to the teacher play the piece and then broke it down into patterns. Between lessons, he would work out the pattern and figure out the piece. Then, at the next lesson, he would pretend to read the music while playing the piece. His teacher and mother were not fooled, but they decided to let him use his own unique style of learning and, although he became an accomplished musician, Neil did not learn to read music until he was in his 30’s. Mr. Moore taught music to students and trained teachers for many years by way of a traditional program until, one day, he received a phone asking if he would be willing to teach an eight year old boy who was blind. With reading music being out of the question, Neil wasn’t exactly sure how he’d teach the young boy (Wade), but had no doubt that he could do it. It was clear to Neil that he needed to recreate for Wade his own experience of learning from when he was a boy. When Wade came to lessons, Neil would simply teach him the patterns he had distilled from his own childhood model. Within a few months, Wade was playing a range of blues, popular and classical pieces. When Neil asked Wade’s father if he was pleased with his son’s progress, he replied, “... not only are we happy with his progress, but he’s started to teach his four year old sister how to play, and she’s blind too.” Neil Moore was then compelled to introduce all young children to a similar approach--no music reading, no theory--just playing and learning by “doing.” He continued developing this program, began introducing the concepts to

young children, and found that they were producing superior results to older, more “advanced” students. What struck him as remarkable was that from the very beginning, these new students were playing with both hands, simultaneously, easily and musically, and with so much confidence. Parents began reporting that their children were playing all the time and the students, themselves, began saying that practice didn’t feel like practice…it was fun to play the piano!

After completing a pilot program for student of all ages, it was clear how successfully students could progress with this “playing-based” approach. From their first lesson, students were playing great sounding music and, within a few months, had already built a repertoire of contemporary, classical, blues and accompaniment pieces. The students’ experience of the process was that it was refreshing, inspiring, and motivating. Neil Moore realized this approach that was far more powerful than anything he had ever witnessed or even heard of before. HOW SIMPLY MUSIC WORKS: In reality, children learn to talk long before they learn to spell and read. Furthermore, we learn to tie our shoelaces, brush our teeth, and button our shirt by doing and experiencing them directly, not by studying the “theory” of the subject or referring to notes. In other words, we learn by doing. Simply Music’s “learn-by-playing” approach is based on the premise that everybody, without exception, is musical. Life is musical, profoundly so. Our heart beats to a steady “thump,” and that is rhythm, the foundation of all music; walking is a highly rhythmical, graceful, musical act; conversation is made up of spoken sentences and phrases of astonishing musical complexity. Music is easily and naturally available to us all. Our innate connection to music is precisely what gives us the ability to talk. The Simply Music program accesses the natural sense of music we all possess and teaches students to play the piano by immersing them in the actual process of playing.

The Simply Music method is a “playing-based” program and begins by translating pieces of music into a unique series of simple concepts that unfold directly onto the keyboard. Beginning students are free to relate directly to the piano because they do not have to read music. Consequently, within months, students easily and naturally establish a true “feel” for the instrument and build a Playlist that includes contemporary, classical, blues and jazz styles. The bottom line is that students get to experience the absolute joy that comes from being able to immediately play a broad repertoire of great-sounding music. After about 12 months of lessons, and with a repertoire of 35 to 50 pieces covering a broad range of musical styles, students go on to learn how to read music and understand more theory. Their ability to play piano so well provides a natural and ideal foundation. The Combined Technique of Inhale

VINYASA

FLOWS

“V

inyasa Yoga” and “Vinyasa Flow” Yoga are increasingly being seen on class schedules, not only in yoga studios but fitness centers as well. What exactly is Vinyasa anyway? Vinyasa literally means “arranging” or “placing,” it refers to the sequencing of movements to prepare the body, mind and breath to move in a particular direction. It also refers to the alignment of movement and breath, creating a flowing practice rather than a static one. Ashtanga, Viniyoga and “Power” Yoga are some of the forms that utilize sequences of movements that are directed by the breath. One of the most commonly practiced Vinyasa flows is Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation. A standard vinyasa consists of the flow from caturanga (plank) to caturanga dandasana (low plank) to urdhva mukha svanasana (upward facing dog) to Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward facing dog). Often times in Vinyasa flow classes, if you hear a teacher say, “take a vinyasa” they are referring to some variation of this sequence.

Generally the idea of vinyasa is to move progressively from simple to more complex movements; from the external to the internal. The simpler postures prepare the body for more advanced ones. For example, simple backward bends prepare the body for deeper backward bends. This is also why asana, which utilizes the external body, is practiced to prepare the body for meditation, a more internal practice. Most often, the breath is initiated prior to the movement, as it supports the natural structure of the spine. When used in asana practice, the breath is designed to maximize certain structural effects of the inhale and exhale.

and Exhale

After all, the mechanics of breathing are related to muscular contraction. Instead of thinking of the postures themselves as the center point of the practice, returning to the breath reminds us that the asanas exist to enhance, or deepen the natural structures of the body. For example, an inhale is initiated as a result of the contraction of the intercostal muscles that are located between the ribs and the diaphragm, which forms both the roof of the abdominal cavity and the floor of the lungs. Combined with other muscle groups that mostly attach in the upper back, a deep inhale contributes to the elevation of the rib cage, expansion of the chest, and increased extension of the spine. For many people who spend their days hunched over computers, their thoracic curve tends to be excessive, inhales are helpful in that they flatten this curve. While there are exceptions, inhales are most often linked to movements such as raising the arms overhead, expanding the chest, moving into backward bends and extension postures, and straightening the spine from a forward bend, lateral bend or twist. A natural exhale results from the relaxation of the muscles responsible for inhalation. However in this case, conscious use of exhalation differs from our natural exhale. Rather than simply relaxing these muscles, the abdominal muscles are intentionally contracted progressively from pubic bone to navel. Occasionally, the muscles in the pelvic floor will be contracted as well. This action stabilizes the pelvis in relation to the lumbar spine, creating more stability in the low back, and reducing lumbar lordosis (excessive curves in the low back, another common structural issue). The organs in the pelvis and lower abdomen are also supported by this enhanced exhalation technique. Movements that are usually initiated with exhales include lowering the arms, and compression of the abdomen, which is used when moving into forward bends, twists, lateral bends, and when moving out of backward bends. The combined techniques of inhale and exhale draw the focus to the breath and its relationship to the movement of our spine. Because the spine is the core of all movement, keeping our awareness there helps us to move consciously, enhancing the quality of movement in the whole body. By allowing the breath to guide the movement, we are able to feel from the inside how our body is responding to the asana, instead of focusing on its external appearance. In his book, “Yoga for Wellness,” Viniyoga founder Gary Kraftow sums it up this way, “An analogy can be made to swimming in a river, the current of the river being the breath; and, while there are exceptions, the general rule of asana practice is to first feel the current, and then swim with it.” HB

INGREDIENTWATCH Bottled Up: The truth about bottled water Written By Lissie Lyles Continued from Page 9 And if all that wasn’t enough to make you re-think bottled water, we haven’t even gotten into that whole “BPA” thing yet. What BPA thing, you ask? Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogen-like chemical commonly used to make clear plastics. It has been shown that it can leach into the liquid it contains (like water). Increasing amounts of scientific evidence show a correlation between high amounts of BPA in the body and infertility, weight gain, behavioral changes, early onset of puberty, cancer, and diabetes. If you absolutely have to purchase a food product that is packaged in plastic, check the bottom. If you see a “7” or the letters “PC” (for polycarbonate) put it down. Plastic with recycling labels #1, #2, and #4 are better choices because they do not contain BPA.

related to water shortage crisis, and oceanic pollution. Portable water bottles that contain a built-in filter are another alternative to bottled water. They are also useful for times when you are traveling, or backpacking. Some good BPA-free brands include Katadyn, CamelBak and Bobble. The consumer reports link at the bottom of this article contains an excellent comparison of water filters based of effectiveness, durability and price. Some of their favorites included:

Tap water has its own share of issues that are of concern. Most water supplies are susceptible to contamination by a number of harmful chemicals, either as a result of runoff from pesticides used on farms and other industrial waste, or they are deliberately treated with chloride or fluorides. Fluoridated water should definitely be avoided. Fluoride is an enzyme inhibitor that contributes to bone loss, bone deformities, cancer and a host of other illnesses. It offers very little protection against tooth decay. Because bottled water has a 50/50 shot of being from a municipal source, there’s a high probability that it could be fluoridated too.

• The Aquasauna AQ-4000 Counter top filter ($100 + $50-100 per year for replacement filters)

So what are we to do? Well, the most ecologically and economically sane option is to buy a water filter. There are a variety of good choices for water filters, which vary from the kind you actually install to run through your kitchen sink, or entire home water system, to portable filters that can be placed in a BPA-free water bottle, for easy transport. Consumer Reports recommends installing an under-the-counter filter for greatest economic efficiency, as the filters don’t need to be replaced as often. The less often you need to replace a filter, the less often you need to dispose of an old one, reducing waste. A ceramic, charcoal or compressed carbon filter is effective for removing toxic heavy metals, while leaving beneficial minerals such as calcium and selenium intact. These filters do not remove chloride or nitrates as effectively though. Some of these carbon filtration systems run the water through a second filter to remove most of the fluoride. Banned In Germany, But You’re Probably Still Eating It Written By Dr. Mercola Monsanto, the world leader in genetically modified (GM) crops and seeds, has been named the worst company of 2011 by Natural Society--for “threatening both human health and the environment.”

GM foods are, from what I perceive, one of the most significant threats that we have against the very sustainability of the human race. Why? In a nutshell, these toxins are being linked to a growing repertoire of assaults against human health and the environment--and they are already migrating into fetal blood, which means future generations are now at risk.

I couldn’t agree more. I have long designated Monsanto the most dangerous corporation on the planet, and clearly this is a growing sentiment…

Monsanto is Destroying the Food System via Their GMO Crops

According to Forbes: “Monsanto is so despised by environmentalists that Google’s first suggested search term for the St. Louis company is ‘Monsanto evil.’ Readers...voted Monsanto the world’s most “evil corporation” in a January poll, giving the corporation a whopping 51 percent of the vote.”

Virtually all of the claims of benefit of GM crops--increased yields, more food production, controlled pests and weeds, reductions in chemical use in agriculture, drought-tolerant seeds--have not materialized.

What’s Wrong With Monsanto?

Contrary to the claim of feeding the world, genetic engineering has not increased the yield of a single crop.

The Global Citizens’ Report on the State of GMOs states:

You may be wondering what Monsanto--the world’s largest seed company whose net income for the first quarter of fiscal year 2012 totaled $126 million (up from $9 million in 2011)--has done to have earned such ire. The list is long, easily enough for a novel, but to sum it up, biotech giant Monsanto has created some of the most dangerous products on the planet, including Agent Orange, dioxin, recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH)…and genetically modified seeds. The latter is one of the most pressing concerns because GM crops are now a mainstay of American agriculture. Ninety percent or more of all US-grown corn, soybeans, canola and sugar beets are genetically modified versions, which means that virtually all processed food items contain at least one or more genetically modified ingredients.

Herbicide tolerant (Roundup Ready) crops were supposed to control weeds and Bt crops were intended to control pests. Instead of controlling weeds and pests, GE crops have led to the emergence of super weeds and super pests … Herbicide resistant crops such as Roundup Ready cotton can create the risk of herbicide resistant “superweeds” by transferring the herbicide resistance to weeds. Despite claims that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will lower the levels of chemicals (pesticides and herbicides) used, quite the opposite has occurred, with 1.6 billion pounds of glyphosate (the active in ingredient in Roundup) being applied to American soil in 2007 alone. This is of great concern both because of the negative impacts of these chemicals on ecosystems and humans, and because there is the danger that

alangal, or Alpina Galanga, is sometimes called Blue Ginger. Its root is similar in appearance to ginger, although it is lighter in color, smoother to the touch, and much harder, requiring a very sharp knife to cut into it. It is slightly spicier than ginger, with hints of citrus and cedar. Galangal was familiar to the ancient Egyptians and a popular import for Medieval Europe. Today, it is mostly found in Southeast Asian cuisine.

Galangal is a signature flavor of Southeast Asian soups and curries. Its stimulating flavor and aroma add brightness to the palate, perfect for evoking the summer sunshine on a gray winter’s day. Below is a recipe for a vegan version of Thai Tom Ka, or coconut soup. You will need a sharp knife in order to effectively cut the galangal and lemongrass. The freshness of the galangal, complemented by lime and lemongrass, are sure to transport you--if only temporarily--to a tropical state of being.

Galangal bushes can grow to over six feet in height. They have long, dark green, sword shaped leaves that have white flowers with pink veins, and round red seed capsules. Though the aromatic roots are the most commonly used part of the plant, the young shoots and flowers can be eaten raw. The flowers are sometimes pickled.

Vegan Tom Ka (Serves 4-6)

The fresh rhizome has medicinal applications as well. In Southeast Asia, it has been used to treat bronchitis, measles, gastritis, cholera, and scaly skin diseases. It is also added to a snuff, used to treat colds. The seed is also used to treat digestive problems. A mixture of Galangal and lime juice is sometimes taken as a general tonic. The root yields the essential oil essence d’Amali, which is used in perfumes.

Making a Ripple in the Sea of Life

Check. I’m a widower and I have two lovely children (a boy and a girl) and they each have good marriages and children of their own. However, if I were to die tomorrow, I’d really have nothing to leave them. Am I just feeling blue, because I’m approaching a milestone birthday? Will this feeling of “I should have done more” go away? – Virgil, Oakland CA.

ear Rev. Jack, I find myself drifting from one day to the next without much purpose. I have a pretty good life, but as I approach my 65th birthday, I’m becoming more and more aware that I am not really making a difference in anyone’s life and I’m starting to question, “do I really want to be here?” My bills are paid, but I really don’t have any savings to speak of, and my retirement income will only be my $2,300 Social Security

Dear Virgil, Think about the drop of water that falls into the ocean. That one drop of water may consider itself to be insignificant when it finds itself assimilating into the vastness of the ocean. However, what that drop of water cannot see is the ripple effect its arrival caused. The ripple moves out from the point of entry, and gets bigger and bigger as it makes it way to the shore.

Each morning, ask Spirit (or God) to reveal to you what it is that you are to do that day. Listen; and then do it. My intuition tells me that you still have a lot of living to do, and even some more ripples to make. See yourself not just as a retired worker, widower, father or grandfather. That’s far too limiting and I believe that such thinking has become your prison. You are part of the entire world that surrounds us--just as the drop of water is a significant part of the Ocean. It is but a single drop, but it has an effect on the whole sea.

Your life is like the drop of water. From your vantage point, you cannot see the difference you’ve made. You have no idea of the ripple effect that you have caused. Considered this:

I see that you live in Oakland, so I suggest that you take a trip to the ocean. Throw a rock into the water and watch the ripples swell as they make their way back to you on the shore. While you’re there, allow Spirit to remind you that you have indeed

Had it not been for the gift of you, your wife would have never known the love of her children. She would have never been able to hold them, love them or hear their laughter.

The ripple moves out from the point of entry, and gets bigger and bigger as it makes its way to the shore. Your son would never have had the gift of playing ball with his son, nor would his wife ever known the sound of her son’s laughter, or to have seen the sparkle in his eye.

made a tremendous difference for having been here, and your work is not done. Albert Einstein had a good understanding of humans as an inseparable part of the One, as he writes:

Had it not been for the gift of you Virgil, your daughter would have never been able to walk down the aisle to see her new husband’s expression of joy on their wedding day. They would never know what it is to be so loved, had it not been for the gift of you.

A human being is part of the whole called by us universe. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive. (Albert Einstein)

Do not fret that you have not made a difference. You have made a tremendous difference. You have no idea what your grandchildren may grow up to be. But they could not be that, if it were not for the gift of you. Your grandchildren may become teachers, doctors, authors, or the parents of a great scientist. They may just be the one to save a life, find a cure or bring a new insight to the world. This is why you need to be around. You need to be a witness to, and take in, all that you have caused to be. In the meantime, get out of the house and get busy. Find some place that you can serve. Volunteer with an organization you care about. Unlike your work world, you’ll find yourself surrounded by like-minded people. At this age, community is everything. You don’t need TV or the Internet to keep you company, you need people. Surround yourself with people that are energetic, rather than those that talk about their aches and pains. Honor the memories of the past, but don’t live in the past. Be willing to see what’s down the road and around the next curve.

As I often say Virgil, “If you want to change your life, you have to change your mind.” The message to you is a universal one: We all have to realize that we are all part of one nature; one thought, one vast energetic ocean of cause. Go with the flow Virgil; allow spirit to show you the way and thank you for teaching us this lesson today. You see, you’ve made a difference in every reader’s life today, just by asking the question. Thank you! - Rev. Jack. HB

Watered Down M

y sis-in-law Becky came slogging up to the house after that little bit of moisture we had last week. “You know,” she said, “you’re wasting a lot of water.” “How can that be? I’m just making coffee. You want coffee, don’t you?” “Sure, I’ll take a cup. You know, that’s about two hundred gallons you wasted.” “Becky, I don’t know what you’re talking about. This pot only holds two quarts, and I know we’ll drink all of it.” “I’m not talking about the coffee, although you do drink enough of it to water a good-sized flower bed. I’m talking about the run-off from your roof. You could be using that water in your landscape.” Becky is right. I am wasting water, and those little gullies streaming away from my house are taking topsoil along with them. But what to do about it? A little research showed some possible fixes for that rivulet coursing through my driveway. One is a system of gutters with some kind of collection system, which would catch any moisture coming off my roof. Photo: PeterSpain.com Visit www.HBmag.com

There are a couple of difficulties with the plan, the chief of them being financial. Installing the gutters isn’t all that difficult, or all that expensive. The storage of that harvested rainwater gets problematic, though. Around here, most water comes in the winter, and to store all that moisture until summer when it’ll do some good will take more than just a rain barrel or two. I’d need a good-sized cistern, and that would probably require a large buried tank of some sort--and a few grand to pay for it and installation, plus the paraphernalia I’d need to pump the water out once the tank is filled. Fortunately, I can still take advantage of that water without putting in a cistern. All I need to do is to plan my landscape in such a way that it captures the water that pummels my plants and leaves a deep groove around the perimeter of my house before washing out the driveway.

A gutter system is the first element in the plan. Then I can choose where water exits my roof. From there, a dry streambed would allow the water to soak gently into the ground. Becky recommended Owen E. Dell’s Sustainable Landscaping for Dummies, which tells how to create a dry stream bed. She told me not to take the title personally.

Dell recommends making sure that the dry stream bed slopes downhill. He recommends designing the dry streambed on the pattern of a natural creek bed, which would gently follow the contours of the land. He recommends that the bed be at least a foot wide and ten inches deep, and lining it with a “filter fabric, which would allow the water to sink in while keeping the rocks and gravel in place. There are several varieties of landscape fabric that would do the job, and perhaps prevent a bit of weeding as well.

Dell recommends the use of “percolation chambers, which are just big holes filled with rocks and gravel, which allow quite a bit of water to soak into the ground harmlessly, but I have a big depression where I want to water end up; I’ll probably just deepen and widen the channel there.

(corner of S. Center)

I’m hoping that my dry creek can become a focal point in my landscape. A few gentle curves, some nice rocks, and that wasted water will do me some good, especially if I’m wise in the selection of plants. I can take best advantage of the extra water by choosing drought-tolerant plants with deep roots, so that they can take better advantage of the water as it goes down. There. All planned out. Now all I have to do is dig that ditch. I’ve got two shovels. I wonder what Becky is doing this spring?

The Fountainhead By Ayn Rand

Movie reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

T

difference between good and evil in everyday life, and that it’s really possible for the former to prevail. She takes no prisoners, looking at even the slightest compromise as a weakness.

he book The Fountainhead was published in 1943. It was one of the most popular books of that time and has become an enduring piece of literature. This movie was produced in 1949 and is a good portrayal of what Ayn Rand was trying to say in the novel. It’s the story of one man, Howard Roark, and his struggles as an architect who is determined to retain his integrity against clients and powerful peers who are determined to alter his designs and to make him conform.

Having been born in Russia in 1905, and having endured the Bolshevik Revolution, fleeing with her family to the Crimea to finish school, Ayn saw first hand what she calls collectivism, one of the major aspects of Communism. She saw her family’s descent into poverty after their pharmacy was taken over and her University overrun by thugs. She finished school at the University of Petrograd in 1924 in philosophy and history and came to the U.S. in 1925, never returning to Russia.

Roark has a real passion for his creative architecture, which in the movie, look somewhat like Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs. Ayn Rand wrote Roark as a man who is way ahead of his time, is uncompromising in his creativity and is determined to accomplish his professional goals. Even against enormous pressure to do so, he refuses to compromise. This puts him out of work until a client who wants to erect an unconventional building hires him to design something spectacular. The machinations of his powerful enemies are fascinating and the passionate complex relationship between Roark and the socialite Dominique Francon, who also has the same philosophy of life, is interesting to follow, as it develops from competition to true love. Roark’s elegant speech in a courtroom at the end of the movie, as he is fighting for his freedom, is philosophically the high point of the movie, as he explains just exactly why it is impossible for him to compromise his integrity by changing his designs.

Ayn Rand has also written In Her Own Words, Anthem, and We The Living. However, Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, is probably her most famous work. The first part of it was recently made into a movie. The second part will begin production this April. A book 200 pages longer than The Fountainhead, it deals with the same struggles between individualism and collectivism. Every book by Ayn Rand published in her lifetime is still in print, and hundreds of thousands of copies are sold each year, so far totaling more than 25 million. Several new volumes, consisting of her self-edited periodicals and essays, have been published posthumously. Her vision of man and her philosophy for “living on earth” have changed the lives of thousands of readers, launching a philosophic movement with a growing impact on American culture. She died in 1982.

Ayn Rand writes magnificently about the struggle between integrity and conformity in our private and business lives, as well as the trials of entrepreneurship and perseverance in the face of spirit-crushing adversity. She believes that there is a definable

t’s been said that “the life you live is the life you get.” This is good to keep in mind when you are feeling discouraged or facing a difficult decision. It’s not always easy to do the right thing, but it can make a world of difference when you do. “The life you live is the life you get” may seem like just another way of talking about karma. Be kind to others and life will be kind to you in return. But, it often doesn’t work out that way, at least over the short term. Kindness isn’t always returned with kindness, and evil preys on the “good” and the “bad” alike. “The life you live is the life you get” means that how you live your life determines its quality and depth. Live the life of the soul and you get the life of the soul. Live the life of the ego and you get the life of the ego. And the two are not equal in value. Your soul carries the values and calling that form the very core of your being. When you serve your soul, you honor your true nature and discover your destiny. You become the unique individual you were created to be. When you live from this spiritual core your emotions, be they happy or sad, connect to something deeper in yourself than your ego. Life is experienced as having depth, quality and substance.

The life you live is the life you get

Your ego, on the other hand, is a plastic thing. Its relevance lies only in what it serves. Left to its own devices, disconnected from your soul, it yields shallow relationships and accomplishments, a caricature of life rather than life itself. Your joy is skin deep, and your tears do not heal unless they come from your soul. The quality and depth of life come from the way you live it. There is no need to wait for karma to affirm your path. The life you live is the life you get, right now, in real time.

The Art and Scien

e think of luck as something that we either have or don’t have. You’ve heard people say, “I’m just not lucky” and you may have said it yourself. But luck is a combination of attitude and expectation. We attract our own “luck” with our own thoughts and emotions. And how long does a run of “good luck” last? Until we believe we’ve had enough. What? You may think, “Why would I stop my own run of good luck?” Consciously you probably don’t. But subconsciously, you may stop it with your hidden or not-so-hidden attitudes, beliefs, expectations and worst of all…old stories! Or you may block it from ever happening in the first place.

pens to us without our input. But very “lucky” people, in other words, those who win often in life, make it an art form. They are conscious of what they’re thinking, conscious of their attitude, their expectations, their beliefs about important subjects, and they probably have also developed their intuition and inner knowing to a high degree. Scientists have learned that consciousness is a subtle form of matter. When we think about something we actually reach out and touch it with our minds. We visualize what we want, attracting it to us through our thoughts and emotions. We make it real with our visualizations. We function as a powerful magnet. Our thoughts don’t stay in our heads…they beam out and influence everything around us. If we could see a radio or TV signal, it would look somewhat like our thoughts, since both are vibrational frequencies. However, our eyes weren’t designed to pick up that kind of fast-moving vibration. But just because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. We can only hear a certain range of vibrations, too. Dogs and other animals can hear vibrational frequencies that we can’t.

Here is a little background on the matter. The highly acclaimed physicist, Niels Bohr, in his study of subatomic events, discovered that even unrelated events contain a hidden connectedness. He and other physicists found that when an electron wasn’t being observed, it stopped being a particle and became a wave, which means that everything we look at in our mind’s eye turns to matter or becomes real if we continue to focus on it. What you notice is what you get. What you think about with emotion is coming toward you now. We have a buffer of time in this physical life; maybe so that we can decide what we really want before it hits us in the face. If we could instantly manifest what we’re thinking about, it would be even more chaotic around here than it is now. So that buffer of time is probably a good thing. The thought is the engine and the emotion is the fuel. The way you see things becomes the non-verbal message bearer. You have the innate ability to influence and to attract anything you really want. It depends on what you focus on. You have the ability to be “lucky” or “unlucky.” It all depends on what window of expectation you choose to look through. Therefore you have the power to create your own “luck.”

Everything is energy. Everything is vibrating at a certain frequency. Every organ in our body has its own vibrational frequency. That’s why different types of energy medicine, coupled with intention, can heal. Every emotion has a different vibrational frequency also. The emotions of love, appreciation, empowerment, freedom, and joy have completely different vibrational frequencies than fear, grief, despair and powerlessness. We attract what we’re vibrating, what we’re expecting, what we’re talking about, what we’re noticing, what we’re focusing on. Then we call what comes to us “good luck” or “bad luck” when we’re actually doing it ourselves. Luck is an inside job.

We are drawn toward our greatest hopes or our greatest fears. The side with the most emotion, belief and expectation is the determining factor in creating our reality. That’s why people who have no clear-cut goals tend to magnetize their fears. They create a subconscious situation in which their choices lead to “bad luck.” “Lucky” people are so focused on their dreams and goals that their fears and worries are simply overshadowed, not focused on. So luck is a science, not something that hap-

Stop telling the old stories, stop focusing on what isn’t going right, just become focused on what you want, or don’t think about it at all. Then the next morning, write down the positive aspects of that person again. Continue this for at least a week and you will surely see a difference in how that person responds to you. Why is that? It is because the invisible vibrational frequencies of appreciation are beaming out from you. Their subconscious mind is picking them up. They may not understand why they feel differently about you, but you will notice a difference. Keep this to yourself. You don’t have to tell everything you do! In fact, the more often you keep your own counsel about what you’re thinking and feeling, the more you retain your personal power.

and events, and therefore influence their outcome. We are powerful creators, but we haven’t been taught that. It’s time we take our power back, focus on what we want, and become “lucky” through our own thoughts, beliefs and expectations. It’s an inside job! No one is in charge of your “luck” except you! Get started today! HB

Some people who can focus consistently on what they want become very intuitional. They watch. They notice. They listen to their gut feelings. An emotion has a different feel than does an intuition. Intuition is subtle, you have to get used to that subtle nudge. You can cultivate that feeling by paying attention when you get it, no matter how subtle, and acting on it; and then saying, “Thank you” even if you don’t know what or whom you’re thanking. It’s important to acknowledge your intuition, your inner knowing. Being consciously appreciative just boosts all your powers, including your “luck-generating” power. It’s all an inside job.

The human body is a light machine.” Scientists have found that photons (particles of light) excite atoms. So, if we are light machines, emitting light in the form of thoughts and emotions, we have the ability to alter matter and circumstances. As we increase the power of our intention, we create a lens through which we can focus the invisible photons of ultraviolet light onto objects

ASTROLOGY

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | March - 2012

M

arch is the month of the vernal equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere, and this will be a vibrant, exciting moment. The Sun ingresses Aries on March 20 in a conjunction to revolutionary, inventive Uranus, then makes a square to Pluto--an echo of the future when, in three months, we begin to experience some of the most amazing astrology of our lifetimes. Mercury is retrograde in Aries from March 4 through April 12. Mars in Virgo has also been retrograde since January; it turns direct a day after Mercury does, on April 13. Aries (March 20-April 19) There is a clairvoyant quality to your charts right now, so much that I’m tempted to ask what you think is on the horizon, rather than try to tell you. That said, you have an open channel of spiritual communication that will prove to be helpful in the coming months. That might prove to be challenging, given that you’re experiencing so much activity, potential and the need to take your responsibilities seriously – but I ask you, when else do you need to be guided from the soul? No matter what is happening, no matter how dramatic or challenging your life may be, you have access to a deep inner current of intelligence. The only requirement is that you ask, and that you listen for the reply. Ask sincerely and listen carefully and you’ll be told everything you need to know.

individual. This shows up many ways, but most vividly in your freedom to have your own viewpoint of a situation, which may differ from every single person you know--and especially in pursuing a quirky, unusual and rather daring dream that you’ve been keeping to yourself for a while. The beauty of the moment is that you are already the person you wish you could be; now all you have to do is get out of your own way. Cancer (June 21-July 22) Achievement does not come easily to you; you care too much about your fellow humans to lie, steal and cheat – the usual ways people find “easy” success. That said, you’re in a moment where something special is about to open up, and it looks a lot like some kind of vibrant, beautiful success at something that’s deeply personal to you. But I would add a few words of caution. It’s still possible for you to make mistakes, and small mistakes can go a long way toward taking the momentum out of much greater possibilities. Therefore, no matter how brilliantly you’re doing, pay attention to every step and every communication. I’m not saying be stilted; I am saying be aware, correct your errors promptly, and understate your achievements. Pride is unbecoming of true achievement, and the world is watching.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) Take care of yourself. Take care of your mind, and take care of the place you hold in the world. Both are precious and deserve to be treated that way. You may be feeling on top of your game, however I would propose that your situation is more delicate than is obvious to you. If you’re not using your relationship experiences as a mirror and a template for growth, you may be missing some key opportunities that are not available on a regular basis. It’s true, you can make nearly any decision at nearly any time, but your experiences are offering you a perspective on “the other” that can, if you pay attention, reveal a lot about what you want from life. If you’re obsessed over what you don’t want, I would propose taking another approach. Being affirmative will provide a more direct path.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) You’re the very essence of faith in yourself – except when you’re not. I would argue, however, that the chart setup for Leo is the perfect expression of what used to be called humanism-which in the words of Wikipedia’s writers is “a philosophy or world view that focuses on human values and concerns, attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters.” The thing is, as you may know, this is a path to a sensible, useful spirituality, one that is not weighed down by dogma. At the moment you’re a walking expression of this philosophy in action. You don’t need something outside yourself to feel your place in the cosmos, or like you belong on the planet. Many others around you are noticing this in your words and actions, and learning something precious.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) This is a magnificent moment to both shine and do so in a way that is actually unique, meaning unique to you alone. You have no obligation to conform to anyone – you never did, but the temptation is always present. I don’t suggest you be different for its own sake, but rather that you have a license to celebrate and pursue your dreams while honoring your integrity as an

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Mars will be retrograde in your sign through mid-April, and first I want to check in with you on the essential themes of this transit: going beyond self-criticism; learning to state what you want directly; devotion to helping yourself first so that you will be much more effective in service of others. Of these, the first is one of the most debilitating issues that you face. You probably know this, and you’re looking for a way out of the paradox that if you don’t notice your own errors, you’ll never get out of them, but noticing just seems to make matters worse. The thing you need to be vigilant about is violent impulses that you might direct toward yourself rather than observing. It’s possible to observe using assessment rather than judgment, which works a lot better when making self-corrections.

are some choices that take very little time but have effects that last a really long time. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Bono has a line of poetry that I’ve pondered for years: “You don’t know if it’s fear or desire.” Now is a fine time to do a study on the differences. You’re living in an entirely new environment right now, whether we’re talking about physical location or an emotional state. Many things you previously held as permanent are showing signs of coming unstuck. Many emotional tendencies you’ve lived with your whole life are suddenly coming under the microscope. I see in your charts a deep craving to know yourself, even if these new developments are shaking you at your roots. The brilliant observation contained in Bono’s line is that there is a fine line between fear and desire, and sometimes we’re afraid of what we want the very most.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) In the coming months, there will be a lot going on in your relationships; though despite the many surface-level changes and some jarring events, you can depend on a level of structural stability. That’s the thing to count on when the momentum starts to pick up and you wonder where your life is going all at once. You’re not really going anywhere other than where you put your feet. Motion is not the real issue, anyway – your astonishing sensitivity is. Therefore, if you find yourself responding strongly to things that loved ones say to you, or to the events that seem to skate out of your control, I suggest that you ground in yourself, pause and filter out some of the external factors. If others cannot feel you quite so well, you can at least start by feeling yourself and gradually putting those feelings into words someone else can understand.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Aquarius has a reputation for liking to think, and I sure hope it’s true for you. For the next few weeks your mind will be less like a think tank and more like a furnace of hot ideas. I suggest that you try something radical, which is pick them up one at a time and dunk them in water. Cool them off, pick them up and see what you’ve got in your hand. Then, if you feel so inclined, gradually shape it into something that you want to work with. This is to say, ideas are one thing, and what you do with them is another thing. The mind can put out incredible amounts of power – and how you harness that power determines whether your creativity is useful or not. You may not be inclined to slow down for long enough to actually figure out what you’re thinking, though I suggest you give it a try.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) This can be a really interesting, as in gorgeous, month for sex--though it will help if you remember the difference between giving and receiving. Yes, they are closely related and some people “get” pleasure from that of others, but there are still differences in the energy flow when you offer and when you open up and receive. The difference can resemble that between inviting yourself to someone’s house, or extending a gracious invitation. It can be as daring as being available to explore someone’s fantasy with them, setting aside your own scenario and playing the role that is the most fun for them. As for receiving – there is a certain generosity in truly embracing what another offers you, and that is something I suggest you cultivate. For you, in a similar light, there is no such thing as “too generous.”

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Neptune, the planet most often associated with Pisces, is now a feature in your sign, which means in your life, through 2025. This offers you some awesome potential--but you’re the one who has to bring the focusing power and personal discipline (Pisces rising people, please take note as well). It’s the challenges that will offer you the opportunities for discipline, and most of them will involve your quest to be a whole person, living a balanced life. There is a lot of talk about this, but hardly anyone knows what it means – nor can they tell you what it means for you. I would propose that in addition to food and rest, balance means expressing yourself in ways that are satisfying and remind you that you’re alive. Twitter won’t work. Painting, photography and music will work a lot better. HB

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) You’re going to be in a bold mood to experiment as the month unfolds, though I suggest you think before you act. To you, that may feel like hesitation, and if that’s the case, then I suggest you hesitate before you act. The difference, however, is that thinking is an active process of reflection, not merely momentary fear. I suggest you parse out the potential consequences of any particular adventure. From the looks of your solar chart, you may be feeling like you have no limits, therefore, I suggest you be the one to set some conscious limits, or at least moments of review. You can easily get drawn into the energy fields of others, through various forms of erotic play and romance. Make sure you have your wits about you. Simply put, there

ello March! We are finally transitioning into spring! Last month, we talked about beginning with the end in mind. Now, we will discuss putting things first, which means putting the most important things in your life first. If you are like me, you are very busy, and have about a million things going on, and that can be very difficult. Finding out what the most important things are in life can be really difficult. For example, if you have to study for a biology test tomorrow, but you also have to do your chores and on top of that still get tonight’s homework done, how do you choose; and better yet, what is the best decision?

“Kids Corner”

Written By Ariana Purcell

Let’s start with “time quadrants,” you can pick which one you are, and from there read on!

The Procrastinator

The Prioritizer

• Exam tomorrow

• Planning, goal setting

• Friend gets injured

• Essay due in a week

• Project due tomorrow

• Exercise

• Car breaks down

• Relationships • Relaxation

The Yes-Man

The Slacker

• Unimportant phone calls

• Too much TV

• Interruptions

• Endless phone calls

• Other people’s small problems

• Excessive computer games

• Peer pressure

• Mall marathons • Time wasters

Have you picked your box? Now being honest, I would probably pick the green one, the Prioritizer. But sometimes, I can be the purple box too, the procrastinator. The author explains that the best box to be in is the Prioritizer, having an equal balance of the important things in your life. The prioritizer makes time for one’s friends, family, and self. For instance, a Prioritizer would make sure to do well in school, stay in shape, and also have time to relax, like reading a book or playing video games. The

point is that you can do all these things, just make sure you balance your time wisely. If you have homework due tomorrow, you should probably get that done first; get the important things done first, the time for relaxing will come. Remember, put the most important item first, which is usually the most logical option to choose. Have a great March, and make sure to prioritize and create balance! HB

Diabetes in Dogs (Part II) Diagnosis

• Serum biochemical profile to determine the blood glucose concentration and to exclude other potential causes of the same symptoms. • Other tests such as abdominal X-rays or abdominal ultrasound if complications or concurrent diseases. Treatment. The treatment for diabetes in dogs is similar to the treatment for diabetes in humans, through diet and insulin therapy. • Dogs require one or two daily injections of insulin to control blood glucose. These injections are given under the skin using a small needle. • A high fiber diet, proper weight management and regular exercise can aid in control of DM. • Prepare for frequent adjustments to therapy early in the course of treatment. Veterinarians prefer to start with a low dose of insulin initially and adjust upwards slowly to avoid overdosing. • Glucose curves may help your veterinarian determine the best type of insulin, the dosage, and the frequency of insulin administration. Home Care and Prevention. Once the veterinarian has given you the prescribed medications, including insulin, you will have to at least give insulin twice a day, 12 hours apart and at the same time each day. You should also work with your veterinarian to develop a weight management and feeding plan. Stick to regular feeding times.

V

eterinary care should include diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of the elevated blood sugar and help guide subsequent treatment recommendations. Some of these tests include: • Complete medical history and thorough physical examination.

Observe your dog’s thirst and frequency of urination. If these remain increased, your veterinarian may need to adjust the insulin dosage. While there is no way known to prevent type I DM, proper weight management can reduce the likelihood of your dog developing type II DM. HB

• Analysis of the urine to check for glucose and for signs of urinary tract infection.

amounts of herbicides in a desperate attempt to stop their spread. Along with the environmental devastation, research published in 2010 showed that glyphosate causes birth defects in frogs and chicken embryos at far lower levels than used in agricultural and garden applications. And numerous animal studies suggest reproductive problems are a common side effect of glyphosate exposure and the consumption of genetically engineered Roundup Ready crops.

Monsanto has been claiming that through genetic engineering it can breed crops for drought tolerance and other climateresilient traits. This is a false promise. Among the false claims made by Monsanto and the Biotechnology industry is that GE foods are safe. However, there are enough independent studies to show that GE foods can cause severe health damage.

Quite shockingly, the amount of glyphosate residue you can be exposed to through food is remarkably high, and is very close to the maximum residue limit (MRL) legally allowed According to GMO expert Jeffrey Smith, there is so much glyphosate in GM soybeans, when they were introduced, Europe had to increase their allowable residue levels by 200-fold! For more information, please listen to this informative interview with Dr. Don Huber, an expert in an area of science that relates to the toxicity of genetically engineered (GE) foods.

Thanks to glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s nonselective, broad-spectrum herbicide Roundup, that is sprayed on massive acreages of GM Roundup Ready soybeans, cotton, and corn grown in the United States each and every year, super weeds are growing at an alarming rate. It’s estimated that more than 130 types of weeds spanning 40 U.S. states are now herbicide-resistant, and the superweeds are showing no signs of stopping. In fact, the situation is getting progressively worse. Extremely hardy Roundup-resistant weeds are already boosting costs and cutting crop yields for U.S. farmers. And with world food stores already strained, diminished crop production is a serious problem. In addition, the creation of these superweeds is leading farmers to douse their fields with ever increasing

umans evolved with a staple source of the essential omega-3 fat docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in their diets, namely seafood.

de novo synthesis of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the precursor for all omega-3 fatty acid syntheses. Endogenous synthesis of DHA from ALA in humans is much lower and more limited than previously assumed.

Animal based omega-3 fats are considered essential because they cannot be synthesized in appropriate quantities by your body and must be supplied through your diet.

... [A]fter much intense research, the 1989 NATO Advanced Research Workshop on dietary n-3 and n-6 fatty acids on biological effects and nutritional essentiality, agreed by consensus that n-3 fatty acids generally: (1) have anti-inflammatory properties; (2) lower serum triglycerides and cholesterol; and (3) decrease thrombosis and platelet aggregation. Therefore administration was recommended as beneficial in cardiovascular disease, hypertension and rheumatoid arthritis

The introduction of high-quality, easily digested nutrients from seafood into the human diet coincided with the rapid expansion of grey matter in the cerebral cortex--a defining characteristic of the modern human brain. The DHA molecule has unique structural properties that provide optimal conditions for a wide range of cell membrane functions, and grey matter is a particularly membrane-rich tissue.

Since then, however, there has been a wealth of evidence to support the notion that the omega-3 fatty acids are not bioequivalent and that the longer chain EPA and DHA are much more important than their precursor ALA.” [Emphasis mine]

There’s no doubt you need omega-3 fat for proper brain function. In fact, mounting evidence suggests that deficiency in this essential fat may lead to brain degeneration. According to a recent article published in the journal Nutrients, “An emerging body of research is exploring a unique role for DHA in neurodevelopment and the prevention of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders.”

The reason why EPA/DHA are more important is because although ALA (that you get from plant sources) is an essential nutrient, the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA is typically severely impaired by inhibition of delta 6 desaturase; an enzyme necessary for the conversion. Elevated insulin levels impair this enzyme, and over 80 percent of the U.S. population has elevated insulin levels, so chances are high that you’ll be part of this significant majority...Therefore, you want to make sure you get the bulk of your omega-3 from animal sources, not plant sources, to make sure you won’t develop a deficiency.

Plant-Based versus Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats Before we go any further, it’s important to recognize that animalbased omega-3 fat is not interchangeable with plant-based sources of omega-3. And while you do need both in your diet, animal-based omega-3 fats are particularly important for your brain health.

DHA: One of the Most Important Nutrients for Brain Function

Dietary fish and marine oil supplements such as krill oil are a direct source of EPA and DHA. Plants, on the other hand, contain the parent omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which can be converted into eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA). However, as stated in the featured article, this conversion is ineffective in general, and appears to get progressively more ineffective with age:

Sixty percent of your brain is fat. DHA alone makes up about 15 percent to 20 percent of your brain’s cerebral cortex, as well as 30 percent to 60 percent of your retina, making it an essential nutrient for both brain and eye health. It’s found in high levels in your neurons; the cells of your central nervous system, where it provides structural support. When your omega-3 intake is inadequate, your nerve cells become stiff as the missing omega-3 fats are substituted with cholesterol and

omega-6 instead. Once your nerve cells become rigid, proper neurotransmission from cell to cell and within cells become compromised. The influence of omega-3 fat on physical and mental health has been the subject of intense research over the last four decades, and there’s compelling evidence that animal-based omega-3 fats can help reduce the symptoms of a variety of psychiatric illnesses and degenerative brain disorders. The Future of Farming in Nevada at Risk Written By Mary Jane Noblehart, if UNR Sells its Agriculture Assets! Concerned Citizen and Local Grower What will happen if the Reno City council members pass UNR’s application for rezoning to a Planned Unit Development (PUD), for the proposed 104-acre future business park, on the most fertile land within the 1049-acre property known as: UNR College of Agriculture Main Station Field and Experimental Laboratory? While agriculture flourishes across the nation, it is Nevada’s 3rd largest industry next to gaming and mining, playing a large part in stabilizing the economy of the state. But, Catelyn Sanders, State President of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), is disheartened that the educational opportunities in agriculture lie outside the Silver State. A native from Pahranagat Valley in southern Nevada, Sanders is forced to leave her home state to attend an out-of-state school that has developed programs that will meet her career objectives--to attend one of many schools in states bordering Nevada that values and emphasizes its agricultural inheritance. One of those schools is Utah State, where she’s already been accepted. She follows in the footsteps of last years’ president, vice-president and treasurer of the NV FFA, who faced the same decision to transfer out-of-state. Rather than encouraging young adults to stay within the state of Nevada to complete their education or come here to study, what are local colleges doing to keep agriculture students at home?

Jana Vanderhaar, Landscape Architect and advocate for local food security, believes this is an opportunity for vision, and the UNR administration needs the community stakeholder’s help to envision a hands-on multi-disciplinary agriculture program that teaches ecological farming, market gardening, and sustainable food systems appropriate for desert areas. “A program like that is sure to attract local and global students, increase funding, help grow jobs and provide local food security for our region.” She hopes the UNR Administration, and the Board of Regents, will stay open to plans that are more beneficial to the community, and the current and future students. “Colleges across the country are expanding agricultural education because of the growth of the local food industry. UNR is perfectly situated to offer a unique and highly valuable sustainable agriculture program, and I would like to see the administration rebuild the College of Agriculture to suit 21st century needs,” adds Shelly Brant, a local food advocate.1
