orels or Morchella, are a genus of wild edible mushrooms found in moist wooded areas. In North America they are typically found under trees in coniferous forests. A morel, Your Loca l Reso urce for Natu ral Livin g like other mushrooms, is considered to be a fruit. The morel mushroom is what is produced from the body of an extensive underground network of fine thread-like material. It feeds off the organic ground matter within the forest. It has been found, through DNA tests, that these mushroom body systems can stretch for miles from one parent source. According to Gary Novack , a mushroom physiologist, morels evolved from a fungi similar to the regular mushroom. The morel is highly desired and unusual. Even though they look complex they are actually a recently developing yeast, and have not become structurally complex in their evolution, which lends to its sensitivity, lack of strength and tough skin, as other have mushroom varieties. Morels crumble easy and are often broken. The morel appearance is that of a sponge, but they are hollow, brittle and rubbery. They produce ascospores, which are spores within the tissue near the surface forced out as it grows. These spores need a lot of surface area, and ridges and pits allow for this, creating the sponge-like appearance. Morels have a unique flavor that is smooth, full bodied, and rich in taste. The morel mushroom can only be found in the wild and has a short growing season, which is why they are highly prized by chefs and food lovers alike. They are often dried for longevity. Morel mushroom hunting is a popular Spring past-time in many regions of the United States. There are numerous Morel festivals, bringing communities together to boast about the search and the findings of these unique mushrooms. SEXUALHEALTH

Xlear
Saline Nasal Spray
A
s things begin to bloom into Spring, for those of us who have allergies it can be a challenging time. Xlear is an all natural, drug free Saline Nasal Spray with Xylitol. There is nothing worse than being congested and usually you are just not sick enough to stay home so off to work you go, dealing with the kids, dinner and other responsibilities. Xlear can be that alternative you have been looking for to handle the allergies of Spring. This product claims to help clean the sinuses by washing away pollutants, pollens, irritants and other airborne contaminants. It also assists with dry irritated nasal passages by soothing and moisturizing them. Nasal passages that have become irritated due to low humidity, pollutants, overuse of nasal decongestants and other nasal irritations have been relieved. Ingredients: • Purified Water: physically processed to remove impurities. Common forms include distilled water and deionized water, reverse osmosis, carbon filtration, microporous filtration, ultrafiltration, ultraviolet oxidation, or electrodialysis. • Xylitol: Used to be made from birchwood, but today made
from waste products from the pulp industry. It is said to have a diuretic effect but that has not been substantiated. Used in chewing gum, mints, toffee and as an artificial sweetener. It has been reported to reduce cavities in teeth because it does not ferment in the mouth like sugar. The FDA initial reports state it as a possible cancer-causing agent. It has been used as a sweetener for diabetics. Further studies have reported species-specific findings not applicable to humans for Xylitol as a food additive and therefore, there is no limit on daily intake as set by Expert Committee on Food Additives. It can cause an upset stomach if taken in large amounts. The metabolization of Xylitol does not involve insulin making it beneficial for diabetics. • Saline: in water there is a significant concentration of dissolved salts (NaCl). The concentration is usually expressed in parts per million (ppm) of salt. • Grapefruit Seed Extract: also known as citrus seed extract, is a liquid derived from the seeds, pulp, and white membranes of grapefruit. Neurofeedback Written by Marie Harger

eurofeedback, a l s o k n ow n a s biofeedback, has grown in popularity due to expanding scientific evidence by world leading universities and research hospitals. In fact, the U. S. National Library of Medicine’s database of scholarly articles contains dozens of prestigious studies about neurofeedback with positive outcomes. With neurofeedback you can learn to train your brain. Neurofeedback is used not only by elite athletes to improve performance, but also by those who want to reduce stress, enhance creativity, and/or improve mental health. Many studies are suggesting a drugfree alternative for those with ADHD and drug addiction. Neurofeedback is technology based on work developed by German psychiatrist Hans Berger who began to use electrodes to measure and categorize human brainwave activity. An eletroencephalograph is a machine that measures the brain-wave pulsations. Normal waking consciousness is called the Beta state with a frequency of 14-30 Hz. A relaxed, comfortable, natural and peaceful state is the alpha level, which you must pass through on your way to deep sleep, where the brain-wave pulsates from 7-13 Hz. It is in this state that neurofeedback has its results. Theta brain wave state is slower than alpha at 4-7 Hz. In deep sleep, delta level, brain waves have a frequency of 4 Hz or slower. Through neurofeedback, you can learn to stay in the alpha state. Researchers from Laredo, Texas found that when the brain is in this state it is highly beneficial for the body. Stressed organs and systems rejuvenate, recuperate and revitalize and as this occurs the body can then experience healing, stress reduction, creativity and more. They found in the alpha level, subjects had the ability to control the unconscious or subconscious functions.

According to Martin Wutke, founder of a Neurofeedback clinic and former Heroin addict, meditation is what helped him beat his addiction problem, and he used neurofeedback to facilitate that state. He further says, that alcoholics and drug addicts have been noted as having fast brain waves, which drive them to seek a chemical fix to calm and soothe the overactive brain. With neurofeedback, parts of the brain that have been asleep or underused can be activated, and overactive regions of the brain can be calmed down. The results are often life-changing. ADHD are a common condition many children and parents are dealing with, and usually medication is prescribed. The beta brain waves in someone who has ADHD is lacking. In the Beta state we have the ability to concentrate our thought and attention. Through neurofeedback training, beta waves can be increased, improving concentration, and learning to calm oneself down when needed. Notable research with neurofeedback has been established for sufferers of migraines, depression and anxiety by teaching to monitor vital body signals and then attempt to control them. Although neurofeedback does not cure our health conditions or issues, it is a tool that enables people to produce the necessary brain waves needed to manage and deal with existing and underlying issues. othing is more important than reconnecting with your bliss. Nothing is as rich. Nothing is more real.” (Deepak Chopra). We are on a quest, whether we know it or not, to know our bliss. Kate Moser has dedicated the last 15 years to the field of energy healing to facilitate and guide her clients to that reconnection while relieving stress, and physical and emotional pain. There is more to the world than what our senses can tell us and there is more to a person than a body and mind. Energy Healing is a way to supplement, compliment and enhance what people are already doing to help heal themselves. Kate grew up in Northern California. She attended the University of Oregon, Eugene, and received a B.A. in Psychology. She has done extensive training on the Energy Meridians used in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley, California. When Kate was 24 she became very sick with an autoimmune disorder. Not only was she ill, she was unsure and unaware of how to get well. She knows what it feels like to be afraid to try something new. She ventured into her first alternative healing session very skeptical, but because she was not getting results from the medications she was taking and the traditional medical approach, she was
determined. What she found was, modalities directed towards shifting energy such as acupuncture, homeopathy and energy healing assisted her to feeling calm, relaxed and increased her body’s healing processes. She knew the positive changes that occurred in her health were directly related to these alternative modalities. Although Western Medicine has its place and is viable medicine, the nurturing and feeling of calm and the improvement in health that she experienced with energy healing was invaluable. Many first time clients of Energy healing are there because they are battling chronic on-going problems, extreme stress and/or pain, and are looking for something other than Western medicine, or they want an integrative approach. In this work, combined with relief of physical or emotional pain there is also a natural reconnection with the inner Self. This is where deep healing may take place. Energy healing is an intuitive process that unfolds naturally, and as a practitioner, Kate allows, encourages and amplifies this flow. This work is subtle and deep because it relaxes the nervous system, which will then assist the body’s healing abilities. A session begins similar to what you may expect from a massage, except one wears comfortable clothing. The job of the client is to lie down on the

massage table and relax. Healing energy flows from the practitioner’s hands and goes where it is needed. The body uses the energy to then facilitate healing within itself. The idea is to get the energy in the body to flow and to release blocks and create shifts. As shifts take place and blockages are unraveled, the client will experience a deepening within accompanied by a sense of peace and calm. What could be more satisfying and gratifying than to be involved in Energy Healing as it gives the gift of reconnection to the inner Self, to one’s bliss. Kate works as a catalyst for healing and for this, she feels truly blessed. References: 1. Chopra, Deepak. Ageless Body, Timeless Mind. he human natural condition is one of peace and calm and Energy Healing is a modality that allows us to experience that natural state. In our culture, our sympathetic nervous system can be over stimulated due to everyd ay l i f e . This is the system that is familiarly known as the “fight or
flight” reaction; the automatic reaction we go into when facing perceived danger. During stress, the adrenals release large amounts of adrenaline, the muscles contract, the stomach releases excess acid, and digestion is slowed. When the sympathetic nervous system is activated and reactivated over and over, it takes a toll on the adrenals, heart, stomach, and circulatory systems. Stress is the catchword of the age. We are under pressure. We are zooming on freeways, have deadlines at work, have concerns and fears over health, money, politics, and relationships. This is on top of the emotional and mental wounds or conditioning we may be carrying. We are all looking for ways to decrease stress. However, just looking for ways to decrease stress can create stress! Which yoga studio is right? Can I juggle the time to get a massage? Which task can I put off until tomorrow? All of this combined is what over stimulates us and sends our bodies and the nervous system into overload.
People often ignore their pains or are unaware of how much tension they hold within the body. As a result, the flow of vital energy can stagnate and chronic tension can develop which affects posture, breathing, metabolism, emotional states, perceptions, and interpretations of the environment. When congestion in the flow of vital energy is cleared with an energy healing, a person can experience a sense of peace and calm within. At that point, a barometer has then been created from which to measure and detect an energetic imbalance. Health problems can be avoided as a result of clearing up pain and stress. Energy healing decreases stress. How does it do this? It interrupts the over-stimulated process of nervous system by decreasing diastolic blood pressure, reducing anxiety, and slowing heart rate. It relaxes the nervous system, the mind and the body. The breath slows and allows for deep relaxation. Energetic stagnation is removed and

Creating a Profitable Workable Space Written by Connolly Properties
W
orkable space means efficiency, productivity, synergy and health. It is often necessary to transform your existing office space to meet these important goals and create these aspects of workable space. Having the ability to modify the space to your needs is similar to making a house a home. For business owners who are looking for a space and location to start a business or expand, there is much to consider to be profitable. Workable space contributes to the bottom-line of your business because when your people are healthy and happy, they will contribute more, you and your employees excel, and your business will thrive. According to the World Resource Institute indoor environments have a tre-
mendous effect on occupant well-being and functioning, especially in regards to light and color, the sense of enclosure, privacy, access to window views, a connection to nature, sensory variety and personal control over environmental conditions. When creating a workable business space psychological well-being is another major factor to health and happiness. Consider what positively impacts employees ability to be effective at work by reducing stress, creating job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Workspaces that are designed in terms of practicality, functionality, safety, productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness can give an overall sense of ease and pleasure to the environment. Valuable business outcomes of health and happiness then overflow to customers and other business
partnerships and relationships. Synergy is created for your business when other like-minded businesses, with a similar target market are located nearby. If a customer goes to the mall and buys a new dress and then walks past a shoe store just two stores away she is more likely to consider the need of a pair of shoes for that new dress. These businesses have purposely located themselves together to make it easy for customers to find similar and complementary services and products, which directly impacts their bottom-line. Think about the kinds of businesses that compliment your offerings. Also, the demographics (knowing the social statistics of the populations you are targeting) of

WELL-BEING
Motherhood No Wimps Here
Written by Jane O’Brien, PT

f you’ve recently had a baby in the last two years, you may be feeling the effects in your body – even this long after delivery. Delivery is difficult on a body. Here are some tips to consider on how to be a mom without breaking your back. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, the ligaments become lax due to oxytocin to allow for the baby to pass through the birth canal. Moms need to be especially careful during sports and workouts not to put added strain on their joints. The potential for injury is much higher during this period. Unfortunately for adults, children are not at our level but are low to the ground, requiring us to bend down. We are frequently bending, lifting, squatting to accommodate their needs. Our backs and necks can be protected if we follow several body mechanics principles. Bending – Squat down to the level of
the task. Bend both knees and keep the back straight when the need to be low to the ground arises. Situations like placing a child in a stroller are best managed by squatting or kneeling in front of the stroller. Lifting – The basic lift is best managed by bringing the load close to the body. So, at the play pen, roll the baby toward you. Bring your feet as close to the edge of the crib or playpen as possible. Squat to the level of the load, straighten knees as you lift the child. Pull your belly in as you lift. Exhale as you exert. Carrying -The hip carry is good to free up one hand, but should be avoided for prolonged times. Mother’s often rest a child on one hip, which places stress on the low back and sacroiliac joints. Shifting from one hip to the other can help so both sides do equal work. Front and shoulder carries are great for closeness to the baby. Balance the load by switching sides and by pulling your shoulder blades back every so often. Sleeping -To properly rest, one should find a position which supports the natural curves of the spine. For side sleepers, have a pillow between the legs and a pillow thick enough to support the neck without sidebending it. You can also take a rolled up bath towel and place it inside of a pillowcase for additional neck support. For back sleepers,

place a pillow under the knees and one under the head and neck. Sleeping on the stomach should be avoided due to excess strain on the neck and upper back. Strengthening – Motherhood is not for wimps. Many body parts need to be strengthened to be a mom. Legs – perform wall squats by leaning with your back against a wall, bending both knees and sliding down until knees are bent to 45 degrees, and then return to standing. This helps the quadraceps (front of the thighs) and the buttocks. Abdominals – Use caution if you have had a C-section. Ask your doctor when you can strengthen this area. Basic Abdominal Exercises: Pelvic Tilts – Lie on your back with knees bent. Move your pelvis to arch your back off of the floor. Then tilt your pelvis to flatten your back down. You should feel this in your lower abdomen. Repeat 10 times. ½ Roll Downs - Sit on floor with your knees bent. Begin to lean back as if to recline to the floor. Extend your arms out in front - hands next to your knees. Recline half way down. Return to start position. Repeat 15x. Crunches - Lie on your back with knees bent. Place your hands behind your head to support it. Gently raise your upper body just enough to lift the shoulder blades off of the floor. Slowly return to start position. Repeat 15-20 times. Kegels – Contract muscles of the pelvic floor as if to stop the flow of urine. Do not hold your breath. Repeat 30 times per day. Performed while lying down, sitting, standing or lying on your side. Caution – do not interrupt the flow of urine as a test to see if you are performing this exercise correctly. Stretching – Often moms hold positions for prolonged periods of time, standing in the kitchen or sitting during feedings. Change positions frequently to move the spine in all of its available ranges. For the back, bend forward, to the side and arch

Get an A+ in Asymmetry Think Orthotics

eet are the foundation of your skeletal system and if they collapse or are misaligned all the other joints of the leg and back feel the pain. People are more likely to seek treatment for the knee, hip, and back. However, when it comes to their feet they are quietly suffering until the pain affects their lifestyle. Have you ever watched people walking from behind and noticed their arches or ankles “roll in” or their feet “point out” like a duck? Ever notice how some people run or walk “tilted” or their leg swings out? When the body is not balanced and working together this “asymmetry” results in body mechanics that can ultimately result in joint pain or muscle strain from your feet up to your neck. Runners are not the only ones who benefit from analysis of body mechanics, if you live an active lifestyle you can appreciate what life would be like if you were unable to enjoy you favorite activities. What would you do if your foot pain was relieved just by changing your shoes, or your knee and back pain improved or resolved with Orthotics. With the support and stability now obtained through Orthotics you can run or hike like you used to before your knees started hurting and you were told to quit or suffer long term damage. How do you find out if your pain is caused by your feet? Have your gait analyzed by a Professional to determine if you would benefit from changes to your body mechanics. A “Gait Analysis” with orthotics help relieve lower body joint pain. By
observing your foot type, how you walk, and the position of your feet and legs, several potential strains can be noted and prevented. Often, as noted early, pain can be fixed with new shoes, an off the shelf insole, or sometimes a custom Orthotic is recommended. Orthotics, sometimes called “magic shovels” are made most often of plastic and sometimes graphite and are custom molded for your feet and specific mechanics (joint motion). There is a significant difference between an Orthotic that you can buy at the store or one made by a Podiatrist or Chiropractor. First, those made by a doctor are prescribed for you based on a custom mold made of your feet, and the foot type and particular joint motion you have in your feet. Many factors are considered and often a video gait analysis is performed along with joint measurements taken. As even the subtlest changes in joint position of your feet can greatly affect the position and function of the joints of the legs and low back, it is important to know how to make and adjust Custom Orthotics. Do not let pain rule your life… take back your lifestyle… get an A+ in Asymmetry by supporting your feet with Orthodics! References: 1. www.aapsm.org 2. www.solesupports.com 3. Probiotics Implants How Friendly Is Your Flora? Written by Shelby Molchan

the answer. Implantation directly into the rectum greatly increases the absorption and effectiveness of probiotics since they are deposited directly into the sigmoid region of the colon and they do not have to survive the acid bath of the stomach in order to reach their destination. Refloristation with probiotics fortifies the intestinal mucosa, which is an important factor in maintaining good immunity. Probiotics can attach themselves to the bowel wall and help weaken intestinal decay, thereby enhancing the productivity of a colon hydrotherapy session. Removing toxins from the bowel with colon hydrotherapy and re-establishing a friendly balance with a probiotic implant enhances the immune system and improves digestive function. Systemic candida, chronic fatigue and other autoimmune conditions can be reduced by using these methods. Friendly intestinal bacteria keep harmful microorganisms in check by improving digestive function and absorption, and strengthening the immune system. According to MayoClinic.com, research suggests that probiotics may help treat and prevent vaginal yeast infections, shorten the duration of intestinal infection, and treat irritable bowel syndrome.
As a by-product of their metabolism, probiotics produce Lactoferrin, an iron binding protein needed to extract iron from the food we eat. Increased Lactoferrin may improve iron-assimilation defiencies. Probiotics help the body increase the production of enzymes and the absorption of vitamins and nutrients especially Vitamin B, Vitamin K, fatty acids and calcium. A diet high in soluble fiber and phytonutrient rich food enriches the effectiveness probiotics. Combining proper diet with probiotic implants at the end of Colon Hydrotherapy sessions is a fabulous way to bump up the digestive and immune systems and can help to gain control over many unpleasant conditions. reat health requires balance and one of the foundations of great health is an efficient digestive tract. However, maintaining the delicate microflora of the gut can be quite a juggling act of diet and lifestyle. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that reside in the colon. It is estimated that 100 trillion microorganisms of more than 500 different species inhabit a normal healthy bowel. The body works hard to maintain a balance between these helpful and harmful microorganisms. Poor diet, a weak immune system and prescription medication are just some of the things that can ‘throw off’ intestinal function. Antibiotics are one of the biggest culprits since they kill not only the harmful but also the beneficial bacteria. The standard American diet (SAD) also wreaks havoc with friendly bacteria as the over use of sugar, wheat, dairy and processed food feeds candida, which then overruns the bowel without the proper balance of probiotics to keep it in check. For people with allergies, irritable bowels, systemic candida, constipaton, and compromised immune systems, might consider colon hydrotherapy followed by a rectal infusion of probiotic is

Modern Healing

ee Venom Therapy (BVT) is an ancient method of treating chronic pain and encouraging the healing process. The bee employed is the domesticated honeybee, as other bees and wasps don’t seem to work as well. Done well by either a doctor or an angry bee, the sting works wonders with painful conditions such as multiple sclerosis, arthritis, fractures, and sciatica. Why would someone want to get stung to reduce their pain? They wouldn’t, unless they had reliable advice that it worked. Not all pain is the same, and when you have long-term deep aching pain from arthritis or slow-healing injuries, you might be glad to swap that for some short local stings. In fact, the bee sting used as a clinical dose is not very painful at all. More discomfort is reported with the itchiness on the second day after treatment. An ice cube will treat either situation effectively. How does this work? Bee venom injected into the top layers of skin stresses the local nerves, which quickly send a signal to the brain. The brain learns from stress and trauma to toughen up and minimize the stress from recurrent trauma. Those who have been stung in the wild know that the many biochemicals within bee venom are powerful stimulants of major physiological responses. The use of stress, rest, and cycles of recovery are methods of training any living system. Athletes train with exercise, food, and rest intervals to increase functional abilities. All therapies apply similar principles of stressing a body system to allow the body to become stronger to restore normal abilities and activities. Chronic neurological diseases are heartbreakingly common in our aging society. The causes of these are numerous and controversial, as are the treatments and therapies used to get relief. For complex
“The American Apitherapy Society has done significant research that suggests BVT is a proven strengthening therapy for symptoms of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and ALS.” and advanced conditions involving this terrible decline in function and life quality, consider locating an experienced bee venom therapist or “apitherapist.” The American Apitherapy Society is a helpful resource. The American Apitherapy Society has done significant research that suggests BVT is a proven strengthening therapy for symptoms of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and ALS. Like many natural and folk medicines, BVT needs continued research to show benefits for the general public. The fact is that Bee Venom Therapy does help many people who have not found relief elsewhere. It is safe, natural, inexpensive, and often produces better results than conventional drugs. If you face a serious illness, consider bee venom therapy in addition to the best medical care you can access. Keep in mind that the location of stings, their number, and the recovery interval are important variables. Don’t let the hive arrange your diagnosis and treatment – see an experienced and trained provider of this therapy. References: 1. Beck, F. Bodog, MD. HCG Targets Stubborn Fat
Dr. Simeons, M.D, Transformative Discovery
Written By Michael Gerber, MD, HMD
A
n interesting approach to the epidemic of obesity is reviewed in Dr. A.T.W. Simeons’ paper Pounds & Inches, A New Approach to Obesity, (hcgdietinfo.com). Dr. Simeons was born in London and graduated summa cum laude at the University of Heidelberg. Early in his career he became engrossed in the study of tropical diseases and joined the School of Tropical Medicine in Hamburg. In 1931, he went to India, where he stayed for 18 years. He was awarded the Red Cross Order of Merit by the Queen of England for discovering the use of an injectable remedy for malaria, and a new method of staining malaria parasites, now known as the “Simeons Stain.” During the Second World War he held several important posts under the government of India, conducting extensive research on bubonic plague and leprosy control. In 1949 he moved to Rome, treating patients at the Salvator Mundi International Hospital. During his career he authored several medical books and contributed to many scientific publications. Dr. Simeons, M.D., was regarded as one of the top research doctors in Europe. Traveling the world, Dr. Simeons became fascinated with the unique and rare condition known as obesity. Until this time in history the majority of people that were slightly overweight, fat, or obese were the rich. After many false starts into the cause of obesity including psychological and hormone issues, he stumbled across scientific papers, which led him to believe that the source of problems for the obese patient, which defied all attempts at permanent weight loss, resided in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus resides deep in the brain and gives instructions to the pituitary gland on how to regulate all the body’s hormones, thyroid, adrenal, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.
Simeons developed a program focused on the hypothalamus. With Simeons’ HCG program, this regulation is achieved by injecting very small doses of HCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin), the substance made in the placenta of pregnant women. Pregnant women produce one million units of HCG per milliliter of blood and his treatment regimen uses only 125 units per day, a very small amount. HCG works to mobilize fat for utilization by the body only when there is a significant decrease in calories and fat. The program features a very strict 500 calorie per day diet which Simeons claims is easily tolerated without hunger due to the HCG injections and can usually result in a one pound per day weight loss, slightly more in men than in women. Organic foods are recommended and their use must be studied extensively before undertaking the HCG program, with food intake being very strictly c o n t r o l l e d d u ring the program’s duration. Simeons found that HCG helps many health issues and is particularly helpful in removing areas of stubborn, deep fat without depleting protein, protective joint or organ supportive fat, and does not cause anemia or nutritional deficiencies. Modern authors such as Kevin Trudeau, in his book “The Weight Loss Cure” suggest a period of detoxification prior to the program for a more successful outcome. This program should definitely be supervised by a physician experienced with the protocol.

KIDSCORNER

verybody knows t h a t M o t h e r ’s Day is coming up soon! On this day you give thanks to your mom for everything she does. My advice to you is to help out around the house, or if you have siblings babysit for an hour or two.
1) Which country is a fish’s favorite? 2) How does a dog start to write? Allan Briggs is an 11-year-old fifth grader at Our Lady of the Snows School, Reno, NV. He has been making up jokes for the last 2 years. Last summer he gave his first stand up comedy act to a group of campers in the Ruby Mountains. Most of the time jokes just come to him during the day. He hears a word and thinks about it for a minute and if it is a good word he will make a joke from it. He hopes that someday he can be a stand up comedian or a video game designer.
What I did for my mom on mothers day last year…
The Healthy Adventurer
I woke up and took care of my two twin sisters and my baby brother, so my mom could sleep in. I got out craft stuff for us to make cards for my mom. I also bought her some different little gifts with my chore money. Then I hid the cards and little gifts around the house, I cut small pieces of paper and wrote out clues to help my mom find all the gifts. I also made breakfast on a tray and hid that in the oven for her to find! After I had my game completed, I sent my siblings in to my mom’s room to wake her up. Once she was up, I gave her the clues to find her gifts. It didn’t take her very long to find the gifts and after she did she ate her breakfast that I made her and she said thank you to me and my siblings!
I began my healthy adventures in 1972 traveling all over the world by bike. Today I am 69 years old and still going strong. It is never to late to live a healthy active life and be your own healthy adventurer.
Australia - May 2010 Seemingly without purpose they wandered about ungroomed, dirty and barefoot even in near freezing temperatures. Why all this? Why are they Australian citizens, yet not a part of the Australian society, they who once owned all this land? I asked a restaurant owner. Several other white folks gave me similar answers with some resentments: “The government gives them money.” “For what?” I asked. “Royalty payments for using their land for roads, train tracks, parks etc.” Here and there I had come upon some of their settlements. Typically, their brightly colored houses would be surrounded by demolished vehicles and all sorts of junk. “What do these people do to own these homes? I asked. “Nothing! The government not only gives houses to them but also maintains them. It also provides funding for them to live off, except they booze it away and thus are mostly destitute.” What, no work? That must be the ruin of any society. Certainly the authorities could do better than that. Of course, not all fit into this mold. I saw a lot of artwork offered to tourist. So, there must be those producing it. Others managed to take the leap into a lifestyle we call “civilized”. The usual dense bush gave room here and there to swamps, ponds and rivers. Even the air appeared more moist. In one of those swamps, I saw the first “jabirus”, huge birds referred to as “Australian stork”. To be continued….
A good craft to make your mom: Make your mom a totally recycled card! 1. Use scratch paper or any paper that you find in your recycling bin – don’t worry what it looks like, the crinkles and scribbles give it character. 2. Use markers, crayons or pencils that you have at home to write a message to your mom. 3. Go back to your recycling bin. Use any items or paper that you could cut up and glue on the card, to add a little flair. 4. You can also use string, cold cereal, pasta or other similar items to decorate the card. 5. Enjoy giving the card to your mom on mother’s day!

Electronic Waste
There’s gold in them thar’ hills

-waste is creating serious environmental and health hazards. How many electronic products did you and your family use today? Too many to count? You’re not alone. In fact, technology has been incorporated in our lives so seamlessly that some people – especially kids – don’t remember life without the convenience of computers, cell phones, and DVD’s. Sure, life seems easier now, but beneath the glitzy benefits of technology looms a dark secret. As technology gets updated faster and faster, a crushing mountain of electronic waste, or “e-waste”, is generated. So what’s the problem with e-waste and where does it all go? E-waste contains over a thousand chemicals, many of which are toxic and can create environmental and

health hazards. Just how hazardous ewaste is depends on the amount of toxic substances present in it. Among all e-waste, computer waste is the most toxic – plastics, lead, cadmium, chromium and mercury top this list. Furthermore, electronics consist of valuable resources, such as precious metals, copper, and engineered plastics, all of which require considerable energy to process and manufacture. Here’s an example of the power of recycling: By recycling 100 million phones, approximately 7,500 pounds of gold could be recovered – allowing that amount of gold to go into new products! Recovering the gold from cell phones, rather than mining it from the earth, would prevent 12,000,000,000 pounds of loose soil, sand, and rock from having to be moved, mined, and processed. Prevention is the key, and fortunately, many of these electronic products or their parts can be reused and help prevent the scary sci-fi future of a toxic planet. Donating used, but still working, computers, printers, speakers, cell phones and related equipment for reuse extends the lives of valuable products and keeps them out of the waste stream for a longer period of time. tion at work, or just watch a good movie with their family. Electronic waste or e-waste is the popular and kind of sassy name for electronics that are not going to be reused because they don’t work, are no longer safe, or are obsolete. According to the EPA, in 2007, approximately 414,000 tons of e-waste was collected in the US for recycling. With e-cycling, there is good news and bad news. The good news: all types of electronics can be recycled. Your LCD monitor, cell phone, iPod, laptop, television, fax machine, microwave and refrigerator. They are mainly made up of plastics, metals, and glass. All those commodities can be recycled, and go back to new products, and be reused. Reuse is the essence of great recycling practices. The bad news, in Nevada there are only a few collection sites and even fewer recycling centers. To further complicate things, neither the collection sites nor the recycling centers are set up to accept all electronic waste. Unfortunately, that means many of these items end up in land fills and on our beautiful desert through illegal dumping. A common misperception is that someone is prospering from your donated or disposed of electronics. While it may be true that someone is benefiting from your unwanted electronics, that’s very different from prospering. In some states, like our neighbor California, recycling e-waste is mandatory. In Nevada, home of the rugged individualists, there is no such requirement and as such there

Natural Solutions for Hair Loss

air loss, for most of us, is a prospect that is frightening. We tend to lose more hair at certain times in our lives than others. Sudden loss of above average amounts of hair can be a sign of greater imbalances in the body. How do you know if you are losing too much hair? And more importantly, what can you do about it? What’s Normal? For men and women it is normal to lose 50-100 hairs a day. Most women experience hair loss 2-3 months after having a baby because hormonal changes prevent normal hair loss during pregnancy. It is also normal to experience some thinning of hair as you age, (for women after menopause). Other common causes of hair loss: Androgenic Alopecia: this type of hair loss commonly affects men, and is thought to be hereditary. Hormonal imbalances or mineral deficiencies are possible other causes. Demodex Follicularum: a species of tiny mite present in nearly all hair follicles by the time a person reaches middle age. Normally they do not cause any damage to the hair, but some people are more sensitive to the presence of these mites than others. In these cases the scalp initiates an inflammatory response. As it tries to kill the mites, it shuts down the hair follicle, thus causing hair loss. Other common causes: stress, poor circulation, acute illness, skin disease, radiation exposure, sudden weight loss, iron deficiency, diabetes, thyroid disease such as hypothyroidism, drugs such as those used in chemotherapy, poor diet, ringworm and other fungal infections, chemicals in hair dyes and products and vitamin deficiencies.
What you can do:
Important nutrients: • Essential fatty acids such as flax oil and evening primrose oil improve the texture of hair. • Vitamin B complex with B3 (niacin), B5, B6 assists with stress related hair loss. These vitamins are essential for healthy growth of hair. • Biotin and Inositol are vital for hair growth. Biotin deficiencies have been linked to skin disorders and hair loss. • Methylsulfonyl-methane (MSM) aids with keratin production, the protein that is the major component of hair. • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids aids in improving scalp circulation and boosts the antioxidant action of hair follicles. • Vitamin E increases oxygen uptake, improving circulation. • Zinc and Copper stimulate hair growth by enhancing the body’s immune function. • Tin is another important trace mineral, deficiencies of which have been shown to contribute to hair loss. • Silica aids hair growth and makes hair stronger. Helpful Herbs: Ginko Biloba increases circulation to the scalp. Horsetail is a good source of silica. Nettle is an excellent source of Iron. Fresh aloe vera juice is recommended. Dietary Considerations: Food based nutrients from fresh, organic foods are the easiest way for the body to absorb and utilize vital nutrients. Eat a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, and low in starch. Eliminate processed foods, fried foods and sugar from diet. Fruits and veggies contain flavonoids, many of which are antioxidants that may provide protection of the hair follicles and encourage hair growth. Berries are a delicious source of such anti-oxidants. Dark leafy greens are packed with B-vitamins,

and minerals, very helpful for high stress levels. Many good food sources of Biotin include: brown rice, bulgur, green peas, lentils, oats, soybeans, sunflower seeds, brewer’s yeast, and walnuts. The Schizandra berry is a fruit commonly used in Chinese medicine that has extraordinarily high levels of tin. High protein foods such as hemp seeds, spirulina and other green superfood blends provide many essential amino acids necessary for healthy hair growth. Soy foods such as miso, tempeh and tofu appear to inhibit the formation of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone implicated in common hair loss. Miso has also been shown to protect the body from radiation exposure as well. Helpful Home therapies: * Use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and tea from culinary sage leaves as a hair rinse to help hair to grow. This may be used as often as every other day. Use in place of shampoo, massage into scalp, rinse and condition hair as usual. * Tea tree oil combats bacteria and mites that can contribute to hair loss. Massage up to 10 drops into scalp before shampooing the hair.

clean your garments and household items. If they are using anything other than water or CO2 (listed by the EPA as the only 2 environmentally friendly cleaning mediums), then it is not “Green” and could adversely affect your health.
!
t has become increasingly difficult to shelter your family from unwanted contaminants entering your home. We should all take precautions to ensure the safety and well being of friends and family members. What many people don’t know is that they are bringing toxic chemicals into the home and then exposing their loved ones to them.
It is spring and many of us are performing a nice spring cleaning of our household items. That means getting our comforters, blankets, rugs, drapes, cushion covers, and duvets drycleaned. Is it a good idea to get all these items cleaned by using a traditional drycleaner?
Traditional drycleaning solvents are highly toxic and can have many negative effects on the human body. This is especially true when drycleaning comforters and blankets. When comforters are drycleaned, they absorb a large quantity of the solvent and it is difficult to extract all the solvent out during the drying process. More solvent is lost through cleaning comforters and blankets than through cleaning regular clothing because the comforters absorb so much solvent and require an extended drying period. Even after a long drying period, the comforters must be laid out to “air-out” to reduce the chemical smell. This does not extract all the solvent out of the comforter. It is then bagged in a plastic bag, which ensures the rest of the chemicals remain in the comforter until the customer brings it home to cover their bed.
Wetcleaning is the alternative to the traditional solvent of the drycleaning industry. Wetcleaning is a process that uses only water to clean anything that says “Dryclean only”. All soaps, conditioners, and spotting agents are approved by the EPA. There is now a safe method of cleaning all garments including household items such as comforters, blankets, drapes and rugs. And what is more natural and effective than cleaning with water? Water naturally cleans 99% of all stains that garments incur. Perc, Hydrocarbon, and other solvents cannot naturally remove sweat, foods, and drinks in their cleaning process. Wetcleaning is the natural and safe method of “drycleaning” and is the method of the future. References: 1. http://www.epa.gov/ttn/atw/ hlthef/tet-ethy.html
For more info, contact Spot Cleaners at (775) 851-7768. Go to ad on page 15.
One can be sure that many customers have inhaled a strong dose of the solvent when opening the bag. It is especially adverse to one’s health by then sleeping underneath it and thereby inhaling the fumes for weeks or months.
The chemical called Perchloroethylene, commonly referred to as “perc”, is used by 85% of all drycleaners in the United States. It is highly toxic and the EPA classifies perc as a carcinogen. Just some of the adverse health effects are “neurological, liver, and kidney effects following acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) inhalation exposure.” There are so many negative health effects of perc that it is difficult to list them all. All the information is listed on the EPA’s website. So what is the alternative to using traditional drycleaners using “Perc” as their main cleaning agent? One could look for a drycleaner who professes to be “Green”, but what does that mean? Ask your drycleaner what solvents they use to May 2010

HEALTHYRELATIONSHIPS
SEXUAL HEALTH • If your partner says condoms are too small remember that condoms stretch (seriously you can put one over your hand and stretch it all the way to your elbow). There is no such thing as a condom that is too small (not to mention almost all guys are about the same size: 5’’-7’’ when erect).
• Anyone worth having sex with is going to want to assure both of you are protected from disease and won’t ever make you feel embarrassed or ashamed for wanting to use protection. Condom use is not about not trusting your partner but wanting to protect both of you from STIs or unplanned pregnancy.
Submitted by Planned Parenthood Mar Monte
W
e know that STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) rates are on the rise: one in two young people by age 25 WILL have an STI, but won’t know it because most STIs are symptomless. Another significantly growing population for HIV/AIDS is women 40+ because of cheating spouses or a return to the dating scene, long past the days of figuring out how to broach the condom conversation. STIs can happen in a first and only sexual encounter. The Planned Parenthood Mar Monte education staff, who spend all day talking about responsible sexual behavior, offer these tips. Certainly abstinence is the only way to safeguard disease prevention. But for sexually active adults here are things to consider:
• There is nothing wrong, dirty, or slutty about contracting an STI; it is just part of the reality and responsibility of choosing to have sex. STI’s can be as easy to catch as the flu (we do not say a person with the flu is dirty). Many can be as easy to eliminate as the flu, except the four H’s (Hepatitis, HIV, HPV and Herpes).
So how do you broach that conversation? Here are some suggestions. • Talk to your partner about getting tested for STI’s before you start having sex; then use condoms until you get the results. • Offer to go together with your partner to get tested, stressing how important it is to you to make sure that you both know your STI status and are protecting each other from risk. • Get in the habit of always carrying condoms with you (especially if you are going out for the night, if alcohol may be consumed and/or there is chance you might hook up with someone).
For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

• If your partner says they can’t feel anything with a condom, use water based lubrication (“lube”) and textured condoms to increase sensation. We recommend lube use with all condoms to prevent tearing, dryness. • Before putting the condom on put a little bit of water-based lube in the tip of the condom-- the lube will heat up with your body temperature and feel wet, greatly increasing sensation for male partners.
“...one in two young people by age 25 WILL have an STI, but won’t know it because most STIs are symptomless..” • Remember that you can get (and also transmit) any STI in your mouth/throat and even some in your eyes, which is why it is important to use barrier methods such as condoms or dental dams for oral sex. • Lastly make it fun-- sex should be something that makes you feel good, and protecting yourself and your partner is always something to feel good about so you can make using condoms part of foreplay. Offset prolonged forward bending while feeding, cooking, and caring for children by looking up to the ceiling as you exhale. Incontinence (leakage) - After the trauma of 9 months of pregnancy, and delivery (natural or C-Section), the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles have weakened. A cough or sneeze cannot only place a great deal of stress on the low back, the forceful contraction can cause leakage of urine. Remember to squeeze before your sneeze. emon balm, the International Herb Association’s 2007 Herb of the Year, is an ancient antidote to modern-day stress. This versatile herb can be used to calm nerves, promote restful sleep, and reduce digestive distress — plus it could be your new best friend in the great outdoors. Not only do its leaves have a rich, zippy, lemon smell, but they also contain compounds that can repel mosquitoes. “Some northern European forms of lemon balm are high in citronellal, a compound which mimics the well-known herbal repellent citronella oil,” says Arthur Tucker, an ethnobotanist at Delaware State University. He notes that some forms of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) are nearly 38 percent citronellal. A variety called ‘Quedlinburger Niederliegende’ contains this higher content of essential oil. For a quick mosquito repellent, simply crush a handful of lemon balm leaves in your hand and rub them on your exposed skin. Grow the plants near your backdoor or in your garden, where the leaves will be handy when you need them. In addition to keeping biting bugs at bay, lemon balm has a long history of medicinal use. Cultivated in the Mediterranean region for the past 2,000 years, this perennial herb was prized for its catchall curative properties. During the Middle Ages, King Charles V of France was said to drink lemon balm tea daily for his health. Paracelsus, a Swiss Renaissance physician, called lemon balm the “elixir of life.” And in the 17th century, the French Carmelite nuns made their famous Carmelite Water with lemon balm and other herbs to treat nervous headaches and neuralgia. Today, lemon balm is gaining acceptance as a useful herb for modern stress-related maladies. “Weedy lemon balm, which any old brown thumb can grow, would be one of the herbs you should try before resorting to pharmaceuticals,” says James Duke, an internationally renowned herbal expert. “It’s cheap, easy, efficacious, pleasing and safe; and it makes a good tea. Lemon balm is about as safe and pleasant an herb as there is.” Lemon balm could compete favorably with drugs such as Ambien for insomnia, Avirax for oral herpes, Zoloft for depression and Zantac for indigestion. olutions for moderate erectile dysfunction are abound in the multimedia ads we are all deluged with these days. The well known medicines enhance the sex lives of millions. Unfortunately one size does not fit all and one type of pill won’t work for everyone. In so many cases common pharmaceutical solutions cause unacceptable side effects such as headache, red eyes and back pain. For many others they just don’t work. In regards to premature ejaculation they just do not help at all. The Reno Male Performance Clinic works with the more stubborn cases of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. With an aging population still quite interested in enjoying sex, new obstacles begin to pop up and get in the way of a healthy sex life. We are living and staying active so much longer now. Many ailments such as diabetes, heart attack, prostrate removal, high blood pressure, multiple medications, obesity and that last birthday are working against us. Even with all these nagging inhibitors, solutions are available and most men can have their sex lives reinvigorated through the use of the MP2 dosing protocol. The MP2 Protocol is a blend of nonsystemic, FDA approved medications that can be customized to restore a man’s ability to perform, regardless of his age or medical condition. It is been proven to work over 90% of the time. ED medications and hormone therapies can have varying combinations in infinite dosages making it possible to tailor a medication for each individual. For instance, a patient who has had prostate cancer and suffers from hypertension and is 76 years old will need a different formulation in his prescription than a 40 year old who simply has horrible side effects to the popular pills. The combined medications dilate the arteries, draw blood to the area and stimulate the muscle. Simply
stated, the combination of medicines mixed specifically for each patient will result in an erection similar to the really good old days and the ability to maintain the erection for the duration of the patient’s preference. When the patient comes in to see the Doctor, the patient’s medical history and current list of meds is the vital information needed to determine an appropriate test dose of medication for the patient. The key factors are evaluated. Depending on the reaction to a test dose, the patient’s final prescription can be calculated, which includes the appropriate amount of medication to obtain a 95% or better erection. The length of time the patient would like his erection to last can also be adjusted. There are literally hundreds of dosing combinations to accommodate the wide variety of ages and ailments to be dealt with. All in all, if erectile dysfunction problems have got you down, visit The Reno Male Performance Clinic and get it up and get back in the game. Dr. Eric Math our Medical Director is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. We have an experienced and compassionate team and only use FDA approved medications compounded here in the U.S.A. ar Infrared therapy has made medical news in its use in patients with cardiovascular conditions such as congestive heart failure and angina, as it enhances endothelial nitric oxide, which lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular function. Due to the elevation of nitric oxide, the FarInfrared Sauna has been found to enhance sexual arousal and increase the intensity of orgasm in both genders. In men, under the right circumstances that extra nitric oxide will help to dilate the key blood vessels serving the penis and erectile function improves. Viagra artificially inhibits the enzyme that normally breaks down nitric oxide resulting in higher nitric oxide levels. In women, If you combine L-arginine (a common amino acid, when used as a gel enhances circulation and sensitivity in the clitoral area) with Far-Infrared Sauna therapy you will get even a better result than

Two studies conducted at the University of Northumbria in England found that a standardized lemon balm extract improved participants’ moods, with no decrease in mental alertness at certain dosage levels. “The results suggest that low doses of lemon balm may enhance calmness and high doses may have a mild sedative effect,” writes Christina Chase for the American Botanical Council. with L-arginine alone. Recent research is finding a correlation between the immune system and a healthy, functional sex life. Studies are showing that arousal and an active sex life may lead to a longer life, better heart health, an improved ability to ward off pain, a more robust immune system and even protection against certain cancers, not to mention lower rates of depression, says Dr. Ronald Glaser, director of the Institute of Behavioral Medicine Research at Ohio State University. Thanks to a better understanding of the biochemistry of arousal, as well as advances in imaging techniques, doctors are closing in on some possibilities why this is so. Their efforts are leading them to the hormone oxytocin, which may be the key lubricant for the machinery of sex. Known for controlling the muscles of the uterus during childbirth, oxytocin surges up to five times as high as its normal blood level during orgasm. Studies in animals have also revealed oxytocin’s softer side. It is responsible for helping individuals forge strong emotional bonds, earning its name as the cuddle hormone. Released in the brain, oxytocin works in the blood, where it travels to tissues as distant as the uterus, as well as along cold sores (oral herpes). A study published in the journal Phytomedicine found that a cream made with lemon balm extract reduced the number of blisters in an outbreak, if used early. While lemon balm creams may be hard to find, you can make one formulated with 1 percent dried lemon balm. Sleep. A Swiss study published in the journal Fitoterapia showed that a combination of lemon balm and valerian root improved sleep quality as compared to a placebo group. Another study published in Phytotherapy Research found that the lemon balm/valerian combination reduced anxiety among healthy participants who were subjected to laboratory-induced stress. Indigestion. Lemon balm is recommended by herbalists for digestive disorders, especially anxiety-related dyspepsia, since its antispasmodic properties are thought to calm indigestion. After eight weeks, 43 percent of participants on active treatment reported complete relief from their symptoms. Other than the possibility of an allergic reaction, lemon balm has few side effects. From Page 22, Natural Solutions • Use shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin, silica and/or MSM. Avoid synthetic hair products and dyes. Allergic reactions to such products occur frequently. There are a host of dangers associated with many of their common ingredients. Choose a hair formula that is organic, plant based and PH balanced. • Hair is very fragile, especially when wet. Do not wash it more than necessary, and handle hair carefully while drying it. Gently pat hair with a towel and then air dry. Do not use hair dryers, or other hot appliances on your hair. Avoid rough treatment to the hair such as the use of fine-tooth combs, tight hair bands, ponytails or other treatments that tend to pull on the hair and break it. Hair sticks that support the hair in a loose bun, or up-do, are a gentle way to keep hair out of your face and avoid breakage. Avoid hats that are too tight and do not allow the scalp to breathe. Choose hats made from natural fibers that have some ventilation. • To improve your circulation, lie head down, with your feet up a wall at a forty-five degree angle for up to 15 minutes a day, encouraging blood flow to the scalp. Daily scalp massage with Jojoba oil or aloe a gel is also recommended. According to Louise Hay in her book, “You can heal your life” mental and emotional factors contribute to the manifestation of disease in the body. Hay claims that hair loss often occurs as a result of fear and mistrust of the process of life, as well as a need to control everything. A helpful affirmation for changing this thought pattern is: “I am safe. I love and approve of myself. I trust life”. Repeat this affirmation to yourself, while looking lovingly into your own eyes in a mirror. NOTE: None of the above treatments mentioned are meant to be a substitute for medical care. If you have serious concerns about hair loss, please consult a health care professional. References: 1. Hay, Louise L, “You Can Heal your Life”, Hay House Publishing, 1984 2. How to Prepare: Blend the nuts, dates, and half the water first to get it as creamy as possible (about 30-45 seconds in a high speed blender – longer in a regular one). Add the remaining water and salt and just blend briefly. Almond milk generally needs to be strained before you serve it (for texture purposes only) but it is not required. You may purchase a nutmilk bag online or buy a paint straining bag from the hardware store, which is much cheaper. Special Notes: Almonds should be soaked 24 hours then rinsed. You can keep them in water in a refrigerator for up to two weeks as long as you change out the water and rinse them every couple of days. This is to release enzyme inhibitors. Cashews and macadamia nuts do not require soaking for this recipe. A high speed blender works best for these recipes but if you do not have one then use cashews that have been soaked for several hours to make them soft. Virginia City The Wild West
A Brief History and Places Of Interest
Written by Sean Block
I
n 1849, some fortunate pioneers were resting in the hills above Washoe valley when they came across a chance discovery; gold so thick it could be pulled from the rock by hand. Ill-equipped for mining, they took a few pieces and continued on their way. However, as they ventured westward, their tale of rivers lined with gold went with them; and the gold rush had begun. Hopeful miners and prospectors scattered themselves among the hills, looking to strike it rich. Years later, Johnstown, a mining settlement in western Utah picked up and moved en-masse to an unnamed hilltop overlooking Carson City. Among them was an old drunk named James Finney. Lore has it that “Ol’ Virginny,” as he was known to the miners, was stumbling whiskey-in-hand through the canvas tents of town when he slipped; smashing his jug and losing its contents into the dirt. Exasperated, he poured the last drops on the ground and bellowed, “I claim this land Virginny City!” So in 1859, Virginia City got its name. By a year later, the canvas tents were replaced by busy streets and booming businesses. Ornate buildings, a grand opera house, modern schools, hospitals and churches sprung from the ground as the Comstock lode rapidly created what was, for a brief time, the richest town in America.
However Virginia City has a very violent past. Lynching and murder were everyday occurrences. Fires routinely killed workers and destroyed mines and buildings. From the beginning, there were few laws and less enforcement protecting miner’s discoveries. Claims were protected by the men who founded them. The revolver was law. The rampant violence and harsh conditions left a mark upon the land. Virginia City is widely considered by believers and skeptics alike to be one of the most haunted places in the world. Places of Interest: The Railroad - Round-trip train rides are available on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad from Virginia City to Carson City and Gold Hill (and vice versa.) The train runs daily from May 29, to October 31. Fares are $9 for the diesel train and $10 for the steam engine. Museums - 12 museums occupy Virginia City, often pertaining to and located at specific historic landmarks. Mark Twain, Gambling, and Wild-West Museums make up just a few of the many options for visitors looking to learn about the city’s past. Storey County Courthouse - Rebuilt in 1875 after a fire burned two-thirds of Virginia City to the ground. The lavish building was long considered one of the grandest courthouses in the nation. John Mackay’s Home - Located on D Street. John Mackay was one of the most influential men in Virginia City. The
school of mining at the University of Nevada, Reno bears his last name. John W. Mackay was born on November 28, 1831 in Dublin, Ireland. At nine years old, his family immigrated to New York. Mackay began his career in mining in 1851, at the age of 18. In 1860, he made the move from California to Virginia City, Nevada. There, he worked a ‘rathole’ mine, an inexpensive and crude operation that rarely yielded much result. However his location on Gold Hill was one exception and made him his first millions. In 1873, Mackay and his partners struck the famous Comstock vein, producing over $180 Million of Gold, Silver, and other ore. Mackay was an industrious man and, after the heyday of the Gold Rush, used his newfound wealth for numerous projects including the Bank of Nevada, two telegraph and postal companies, and the first telegraph cable across the Atlantic. Mackay moved to San Francisco to form the Commercial Cable Company. After his death in 1902, his son and wife erected a statue commemorating Mackay on the UNR campus in 1908. 4th Ward School - Also built after the 1875 fire, it was the most modern school in the country at the time. The school graduated its last class in 1936. Piper’s Opera House - Between A and B Streets, the opulent theater once fea-

Monthly Health Outlook:
THE SUN IN
TAURUS
Written By Robert Ayres
T
he Sun enters Taurus on April 19. This is the second sign that the Sun passes through in the spring season. It is a fixed earth sign that expresses as love of earth. The Bull rules the physical senses that connect us with our outer environment. We are attracted and intrigued by nature and the world. This results in the desire/love nature stimulating us to experience this fascinating realm. The fundamental keyword for Taurus is I Want. This is the desire to possess the world in order to experience it. The Bull is one of the more creative, fertile signs of the zodiac. During the Sun’s journey through Taurus, nature bursts forth in new life. Humanity also feels a new sense of vitality and creativity. The world manifests the feminine principles of love and beauty. Venus, the planetary ruler of Taurus, is the goddess of these virtues. Life has the potential to be more enjoyable and fulfilling now. From the physiological perspective, Taurus rules the neck. The neck contains the throat chakra and the larynx. These centers hold the mysteries of The Word. This creative ability to manifest through speech and sound is a power that will unfold more in the future. It can provoke a sore throat at this time. Venus also has dominion over the kidneys. These organs are responsible for keeping the fluids of our bodies in balance. The kidneys can be more stimulated that usual now. Slippery elm and fenugreek tea can be helpful with these potential ailments. One of the most important qualities of Taurus is its rulership of money. As spiritual beings we are learning how to create wealth and abundance in our lives. The nature of life is abundance, but we each have our own issues with achieving this particular level of well being. Why is it that so many can barely survive and so few have so much more than they need? Our current economic crisis is bringing into question some of the underlying assumptions that form the basis of our monetary system. The overall distribution of wealth in the world is out of balance. Venus is also the planet of balance. It tells us that the ancient maxim, “moderation in all things,” is an important For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
key to understanding our current situation. There needs to be balance between the spiritual and material, the inner and the outer, for true harmony to be achieved. Money is the medium of exchange that is the foundation of wealth and abundance in our economic system. It is under the rulership of Taurus and Venus. It is the vehicle for the desire of nature to express itself in the acquisition of goods. As spiritual beings, we must learn to master the physical dimension. Mastership of money and how to correctly create wealth and abundance is very important. It is based in creatively working with the world and the principle of right exchange. What you give is what you should receive and vice-versa. This applies to our exchange with people and with the Earth. Opportunities present themselves for addressing our financial issues during Taurus. The system is in a state of dysfunction. This opens the door for us to try innovative approaches to healing some of the problems. The old patterns are not working. Now is a great time to get your personal financial house in order. Overall, it should be a good month. THE ABOVE IS NOT MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS MEDICAL ADVICE. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CONSULT YOUR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL. 2010 All Rights Reserved, Robert Ayres Robert Ayres is an internationally known astrologer with over 40 years of experience. Healthy Landscape
HEALTHYGARDENING
Healthy Home
Written by Leslie Lyles, M.S.
S
pring is in full bloom and with it comes the desire for new life in our landscapes. A nicely landscaped yard offers many benefits to a home owner. Studies show that plants can reduce stress, increase property values, reduce glare and noise pollution, and save energy. These benefits, however, can only be realized when the proper plants are chosen for the planting space. Plants are living organisms and thus have specific requirements that are essential in order for them to be healthy and thrive, not just survive, in our landscapes. In order for plants to reach their full potential, careful planning should go into the selection of the right plant for the garden. Whether homeowners have a newly constructed home and are in need of full landscaping or they just want to spruce things up, there are things to consider before choosing the right landscape plants. The most important consideration when choosing landscape plants is whether the plants are adapted to the site. Plants that looked great in a Southern California landscape are unlikely to do well in Northern
California or Nevada landscapes; the winter temperatures here are much colder. To know what plants grow well in a particular region, homeowners should look up the Hardiness Rating for the plant. Local nurseries are a great resource for this information, which can often be found on the plant label. Sunset Garden Book is also a great resource. Another factor to consider when selecting plants for a landscape is what exposure the plants will be planted in. South facing slopes receive much more sun than North facing and generally are not good locations for shade loving plants or for broad leaved evergreens, which tend to sunburn easily. Areas that receive a lot of wind are not good locations for delicate plants or plants with large leaves that can tear in the wind. The soil the plants will be growing in is a huge consideration. For perennials and some shrubs it is easy to amend the native soil or put in raised mounds of quality imported soil, but for trees this is rarely practical. If a tree is chosen that is native to the east coast, where humidity is high
and soils are rich in organic matter with excellent drainage, then the likelihood of that tree growing well in low humidity and compacted clay soils is low. Finally, what is the water requirement for the plant being chosen and is it similar to the other plants in that area of the landscape? Looking at the native habitat for plants can give a homeowner an idea of where they would grow best. Planting a riparian species such as aspen or birch, which require a large amount of water, into a drought tolerant garden is a recipe for failure. The benefits of healthy landscapes are many. Homeowners should pay attention to the plant’s needs, to insure healthy plants that thrive and serve the function they were chosen for. Blessed are the Cracked Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
“Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.” - Carl Jung
L
ast month’s article pointed out that the developmental goal of youth and early adulthood is the maturation of the ego and its adaptation to the demands of outer life. During the “first half” of life, family, peers, and society play a significant role in the molding of our identity and worldview. Generally speaking, society wants lawabiding citizens who will uphold the established social, economic and value systems. Likewise, most families are oriented towards raising children that will become “productive members of society.” Because societies and cultures differ, the word “sane” is relative in meaning. Practically, it describes someone who shares and abides by the general worldview of the community or society within which he/she lives. Those who think and behave outside of this consensus reality,
or who have psychological experiences outside of what is considered “normal,” may be labeled insane, crazy, or mentally ill depending upon the frequency and degree of their unusual behavior, experiences, or beliefs. We say to ourselves, “That guy’s lost touch with reality.” However, in fairness and objectivity we might more accurately say, “That guy’s lost touch with my reality,” or, “He’s in a different reality,” or most simply, “I don’t understand him.” In the field of psychology, projective tests such as the Rorschach (the inkblot test) and the Thematic Apperception Test show how our personal psychology influences our perception and interpretation of outer events. Specifically, they demonstrate the ways in which our inner life is projected onto the outer world. For example, two people looking at the same inkblot may perceive very different things, e.g., one sees a tree, and the other sees a mushroom cloud. The person who perceived a tree may have projected upon the inkblot image

an inner process of growth and ordered development. On the other hand, the person who saw the mushroom cloud may have been experiencing an inner process of destruction. (Such an image might herald the beginning of a period of personal transformation.) All perceptions and interpretations are filtered in accordance with the conceptual and emotional structure of our personality at the time. None of us knows the world “as it is,” nor can we, for the outer world is always colored and refracted by the lens of our own psychological process. Indeed, “the world as it is” is a misleading phrase, for what “is” depends upon, and reflects, the psychology of the observer. (Incidentally, modern physics not only confirms this idea but takes it a step further, showing that the very act of observation influences the measured properties of the object observed). Especially through education and language, family and society create a more or less homogeneous worldview for defining who we are, what is real, and what is important. What we call “reality” is a communally supported and reinforced lens of perception and interpretation. Because our own psychology is embedded in all that we perceive and do, waking life possesses qualities of a hypnotic trance, or dream. Both our dreams and “waking life” are experienced as genuinely real when we are in the midst of them. In fact, sometimes dreams, visions, and hallucinations seem more real than waking life and may have an equally profound impact on the course of our lives. Conversely, we sometimes go through waking life as if we are asleep. In truth, we are always asleep and awake to different aspects of our being and “reality” at all times. For example, in our nighttime dreams we are asleep to the outer world, and in our waking hours we are often asleep to our unconscious world and the dreaming foundation of

For the individual, frustrations and illnesses, conflicts and loss are sometimes the only available means by which the deeper psyche can create windows of new awareness. The things which cause us dis-ease (such as disease) are, ironically, the very events which might open our eyes to new levels of reality. As a humorous saying goes, “Blessed are the cracked, for they are the ones that let in the light.” Although we might wish it otherwise, growth of the personality and a deepened relationship with the soul often comes only through the disruptive events and symptoms that shatter one lens of perception so that a new dream can be uncovered and lived. Next month’s article will examine ways in which illnesses and body symptoms can be utilized for healing and personal growth. References: 1. Mindell, Arnold. lthough we may not like to think of it, aging is part of life, and all of our pets will eventually succumb to it. Because a pet’s life span is so much shorter than yours, an animal can seem like it is aging right before our eyes. The adjacent table will help you determine whether your pet is a senior or geriatric by showing the animal’s relative age in human years. Compare your dog’s Age and its Weight to determine it’s Age in Human Years. As our pets become older, various health issues may arise or worsen. Signs of aging can begin as early as 6 years of age depending on the pet’s breed. While there’s no way to prevent the aging process, we can at least improve the quality of the time our pets have. Some diseases and problems to watch out for include bone and joints issues, arthritis, kidney issues, dental health, skin problems, diabetes, obesity, heart disease and poor circulation, cognitive dysfunction syndrome, Cushing disease, and hyperthyroid. Also, as pets age they begin to have trouble with the senses. When an animal’s senses diminish they may have trouble seeing, hearing, and tasting. An animal that can’t see or hear as they normally would may react suddenly to quick movements or noises; work and play around your pet more slowly and quietly.
The Breakdown: Tips To Care For Your Aging Pet • Preventing disease and maintaining health are the first steps toward a healthy, long life. Take your pet to the vet at least once a year for a complete exam, and follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding preventive measures. • Spay or neuter your cat right away. Having kittens is stressful for your cat and will contribute to premature aging. • Feed your pet high-quality food designed to meet the specific nutritional requirements during all stages of his life.

• If you have a cat, keep it indoors to reduce the risk of accidents, injuries from fights, and disease. • Prevent obesity by controlling their diet and engaging them in play activities. For dogs, exercise them moderately everyday, but don’t overdo it. Watch for excessive panting or a drooping tail. • Add vitamin and mineral supplements, antioxidants and extra fiber to your pet’s diet. Keep your pet’s teeth clean. Good dental health will add years to their life. •Groom your pet daily and check for abnormalities. Seek medical attention if you find anything suspicious. • Protect your pet from environmental dangers such as household cleaners and second-hand smoke. • For cats, provide a heat source such as a heating pad set on low. Cats more than 12 years old require extra heat. There will be a difference in their activity level. • Be consistent with your dogs schedule. For both cats and dogs, minimize household disruption. Also allow a quiet place for your cat to engage in catnaps. Next Month in our June Issue look for Part II – Aging Pets and Potential Health Issues References: 1. From Page 21, Electronic Waste is no state or federal funding to support this effort. There is gold (and copper, silver, aluminum, and stainless steel) in many electronics but demanufacturing any equipment to get to its commodities is a pain staking and expensive process. The value in the metals does not match the expense in safely and correctly breaking them down. Electronic waste collection sites must handle large amounts of items, storage, and shipping. In Nevada, programs like these are self-funded. Your hard-earned tax dollars are not paying for this service. Increasingly, environmentally responsible e-waste collection sites charge a small disposal fee to help cover these expenses. If it seems like e-waste recycling is someone’s get rich quick scheme, rest assured disposal fees are very reasonable. Properly disposing and recycling e-waste is an uphill task because of the hazards involved. Ask yourself, can we afford to continue to further liquidate the environment by inappropriately disposing electronic waste? The mantra of “reduce, reuse, recycle” applies to electronics more than ever. Here’s how you can help save the planet in four easy steps: 1) Take Action. Decide what you’re going to do with your electronics when you are no longer using them. Give them to a friend or relative, bring them to a

Ask them where their e-waste comes from; what their recycling methodologies are or where their commodities go “downstream”; and lastly how much do they truly reuse, either in refurbished products or in new products. 3) Make arrangements to deliver your e-waste to its new home. If you are recycling it, some collection facilities may even pick it up from you for an additional fee. 4) Buy green. BOOKREVIEW
frequency Written By Penney Peirce Forward by Michael Bernard Beckwith
I
n Michael Beckwith’s forward to this book he explains that whether “electromagnetic, gravitational, or quantum… science is revealing what spiritual giants of all times and traditions have told us since the beginning of history: we are luminous, energetic beings of creative intelligence, fully equipped to consciously participate in the evolutionary impulse of the universe and therefore become fully self-realized.” The world’s scientific communities agree that energy comprises all things and that energy systems are conscious. Everything participates in this swirling, oscillating, vibrating conscious energy, including humans. Each thought has a different vibrational frequency, a different electromagnetic charge and each of us has what Penney Peirce calls a “home frequency.” Penny has created what Beckwith calls an “energetic template” which offers skillful means and practical applications for our everyday life. She delves deeply into what it means, practically and in an everyday way, to be an eternal spiritual being living in a temporary physical body. Her brilliant scales of everyday vibrations describe how we influence our body and emotions through our thoughts throughout the day. She explains that we have both the capacity and the responsibility to re-calibrate our “home frequency” throughout the day so that we can be at our happiest and live our highest purpose. Penney understands that “most people are sensing a big change brewing now, that the current chaos and volatility is shaking us up and pushing us to experience ourselves in an entirely new way – less as solid physical bodies separated by empty space and more as energetically vibrational beings living interdependently with other vibrational beings in a vibrational world.” People are discovering that this new way of looking at life is at the heart of the newest techniques for knowing, doing and having. In other words, your personal vibration, that frequency of energy that you hold moment by moment in your body, emotions and mind…is the most important tool you have for For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com
the Power of Personal Vibration
creating and living a healthy ideal life. This book is not just about research and theory. There are dozens of practical processes here, including a new kind of vibrational problem solving to make your life easier, plus a way to transform how you perceive problems and a creative way to notice potential problems before they even occur. Nine fully practical steps to the accelerated awareness the author calls transformation are given here, along with the emotions and reactions most people feel while going through these processes. Questions are posed, throughout the explanation of the nine steps, which are extremely helpful in assisting you to know where you are and what all of it means in everyday life. It is obvious that with the fast-moving changes in our social, political and financial lives, we certainly need more awareness and personal power. Each chapter has at least one “Try This” section with exercises to make you think. The chapters end with an inspired “Home Frequency Message” section that often propels you into a deeper understanding and experience. This is one of those books that help to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. Frequency shows how to manage your energy “state” so you can stay on purpose and reap the benefits of this life now. Highly respected authors who give this book an exceptionally positive rating are Jean Houston, author of Jump Time, Richard Bartlett, author of Matrix Energetics and Dr. Masaru Emoto, author of Hidden Messages in Water. Penney Peirce is an internationally respected author and trainer, an intuitive empath, known for her common sense approach to developing expanded human capabilities, heightened perception and spirituality. For the last 33 years she has trained and counseled business and government leaders, scientists, psychologists and those on a spiritual path. She is also the author of The Intuitive Way, Dreams for Dummies, and The Present Moment. SUPPLEMENTS101
Supplements to Fight Adrenal Fatigue Written by Dr. James L. Wilson
D
r. James L. Wilson is the author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome. In 1998, Dr. Wilson coined the term “ADRENAL FATIGUE” to identify a group of signs and symptoms that people experience as a result of suboptimal adrenal function. This lack of optimal adrenal performance is often associated with the affects of stress on the human body. The excerpts from the book that follow are reprinted with the permission of the publisher, Smart Publications. Dietary supplements play a very important role in healing from adrenal fatigue. They not only speed your recovery but are also often necessary for complete recovery to take place at all. The supplements described in this section are chosen specifically for their restorative effects on the adrenal glands. The significance of each will be briefly explained because you need to understand why these nutritional supplements are included as part of your rehabilitation program and the absolute necessity of taking them regularly. Vitamin C: Of all the vitamins and minerals involved in adrenal metabolism, vitamin C is probably the most important. In fact, the more cortisol made, the more vitamin C used. Vitamin C is so essen-
tial to the adrenal hormone cascade and the manufacture of adrenal steroid hormones that before the measurement of adrenal steroid hormones became available, the blood level of vitamin C was used as the best indicator of adrenal function level in animal research studies. Vitamin C is used all along the adrenal cascade and acts as an antioxidant within the adrenal cortex itself. Vitamin C, as it occurs in nature, always appears as vitamin C complex – a composite of ascorbic acid and certain bioflavinoids. It is this vitamin C complex that is so beneficial, not just ascorbic acid, by itself. Bioflavinoids are essential if ascorbic acid is to be fully metabolized and utilized by your body. The ratio of bioflavinoids to ascorbic acid should be approximately 1:2, that is 1 mg. of bioflavinoids for every 2 mg. of ascorbic acid. Bioflavinoids basically double the effectiveness of ascorbic acid in your body and allow its action to be more complete. The kind of vitamin C you use makes a difference. Vitamin E: Technically speaking, vitamin E is not required for any part of

the adrenal hormone-manufacturing cascade, yet it is essential, indirectly, in at least six different enzymatic reactions in the adrenal cascade. The manufacture of adrenal hormones generates substances called free radicals that can create great damage inside the cells if they are not controlled. An excess number of free radicals slow down the enzymatic reactions and, carried to the extreme, can do physical damage to the adrenal cell structure. Vitamin E absorbs and neutralizes these damaging free radical molecules inside the adrenal glands and elsewhere. Vitamin C enhances vitamin E’s activity inside the cell by regenerating the capacity of vitamin E to sequester the free radicals. These two work hand in hand to keep the adrenal cascade functioning. Therefore, high amounts of vitamin E are necessary in order for the adrenals to maintain high levels of steroid production and recover adequately. It is important to choose the right

Shocking Natural Beauty Aids Found In Your Kitchen!
A
Growing number of people are beginning to follow such strange rites as rubbing orange peel on their skin or putting egg white beneath their eyes. At times they can be found lying around with tea bags covering their eyelids. No - they are not members of a new cult. They are merely a rapidly expand-
ing group discovering a new and delightful way to enjoy the effects of many items they may already have right at home. For example: • Orange ring, which is rich in vitamin A, can do wonders for your face. Squeeze a few drops into your palm and smooth over your skin • Rubbing a slice of tomato over blackheads is healthy way to relieve an unsightly problem. • Apply the last bit of egg white from a broken eggshell to the lines under your eyes and you’ll soon find them fading away.
The growing concern for health is certainly a reflection of the new-found interest in ourselves and our environment. We have also become more aware of our ancestors and are beginning to take pride in learning about home remedies used by grandparents and greatgrandparents. These folksy tonics not only can be a lot of fun to try, but may prove quite effective as well. Many of our most common beauty problems can be tackled via our own kitchens - often through the use of foods that otherwise would have been thrown away. It can be very rewarding to watch the results obtained by using truly natural ingredients and learning how to concot beauty potions of your own. Let’s look at some of the more common beauty dilemmas and see what can be done to deal with them.
Dry Skin • Natural vegetable oils (i.e. safflower oil) taken internally are helpful to both skin and hair and can easily be added to salad dressings. • Mix equal parts of baby oil and table salt. Massage over face and throat. The friction of the salt will slough off dead skin while the baby oil provides moisture. Barley water: 1/2 cups pearl barley 2 1/2 quarts boiling water 2 lemons 6 oranges honey to taste Simmer barley for one hour. Drain. Squeeze juice from fruit. Drinking this cleans up pores, adds moisture and tones your skin. • Use skim milk at room temperature. Pat on face and let dry. • Mix oatmeal and one whipped egg into a paste. Apply to face. Let stand 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water, then cool. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

From Page 43, Adrenal Fatigue vitamin E supplement. Vitamin E, in chemical terms, is a “tocopherol”. Most vitamin E supplements sold in health food and grocery stores are in the form of d-alpha-tocopherol. Although this is a natural form of Vitamin E, it is only a fraction of the complete vitamin E complex. It is the least expensive to manufacture and the most profitable. Therefore, it is not surprising that the majority of companies promote this type of vitamin E, making it the most available type of vitamin E on the market. However, the vitamin E necessary for adrenal regeneration is a mixed tocopherols supplement, specifically one high in beta-tocopherols. Recent studies have shown that too much d-alphatocopherol can actually suppress the beta and other tocopherols necessary for adrenal rejuvenation. Taking a mixed tocopherols vitamin E is critical if you want to restore adrenal health. B Vitamins Pantothenic Acid: Pantothetic acid, one of the B-complex vitamins, is another essential contributor in the adrenal cascade. Like magnesium, it is important for energy production, as well as to the cascade itself. Pantothetic acid is converted into acetyl CoA, a substance critical to the conversion of glucose into energy. It is present in all cells but in higher quantities
in the adrenals because so much energy is needed to produce the adrenal hormones. The combination of pantothetic acid with magnesium, vitamin E and vitamin C increases energy production and takes much of the fatigue out of the adrenals, without over stimulating them. The quantity of pantothetic acid recommended is typically 1,500 mg. per day. Tablets of 500 mg. can usually be purchased in health food stores. Therefore, three tablets per day at this strength are adequate. Niacin: Niacin, in addition to pantothenic acid, is one of the most important of the B vitamins to the adrenal cascade. Large amounts of niacin are necessary to form the molecular structure of certain niacin dependent coenzymes critical for several steps in this cascade. Therefore, a B complex that is high in niacin is important in facilitating some of the crucial enzymatic reactions that take place during the adrenal cascade. If you cannot find a B complex vitamin that contains more niacin than it does the other B vitamins, you may need to purchase a separate niacin supplement. When you are recovering from adrenal fatigue, 25 to 50 mg. niacin a day is recommended. If niacin’s tendency to make people flush (turn red and tingle) bothers you, buy a “non-flushing” type, such as niacin hexanol. Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 is also a co-factor in several of the enzymatic pathways in the adrenal cascade. One easy test for vitamin B6 deficiency used by alternative doctors is to ask patients if they can remember their dreams. If they have trouble recalling their dreams, then they often need vitamin B6. When adequate Vitamin B6 is added as a dietary supplement they usually begin to remember their dreams. Typically 50 to 100 mg. a day is plenty. B Complex: The entire B complex is needed in small quantities throughout the adrenal cascade. All the B vitamins work together in concert with each individual B vitamin while it does its “job”. Therefore, a small amount of all the other B vitamins are necessary to help the actions of niacin, vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid. Most vitamin B supplements contain synthetic B vitamins. Even though the natural forms are preferred, the synthetic can be used effectively to help restore adrenal function. When buying a B complex vitamin

supplement, look for one that has the B vitamins in the proper proportions for the human body to utilize. For example it should have 50-100 mg of B6, 75-125 mg of B3, and 200-400 mcg. of B12. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): The herb best known for supporting adrenal function is licorice. Licorice is an antistress herb known to increase energy, endurance and vitality and act as a mild tonic. It has been used to ease drug withdrawal and stimulate the hormones for anti-inflammatory action. It is known to naturally fortify cortisone levels, arguably the most important hormone in stress and adrenal fatigue. Licorice has also been used to help decrease symptoms of hypoglycemia, a common side effect of decreased adrenal function. Licorice is available in capsules, as a liquid herbal extract, and in the original dried root which can be chewed or made into a tea. Follow the directions that accompany whichever product you choose. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Ashwagandha is an ancient Indian herb with a history of therapeutic use dating back to at least 1000 BC, probably because of its direct beneficial effects on adrenal tissue and function. Although it is also known as Indian ginseng, it is not related to ginseng. Traditionally, ashwagandha has been prescribed as a tonic for all kinds of weaknesses, as well as to promote strength and vigor. It has long been regarded as a rejuvenator and mild aphrodisiac. Because of its ant-inflammatory action, Ayruvedic physicians use it as the treatment of choice in rheumatic pains, inflammation of joints and other related conditions that are commonly seen in states of adrenal fatigue. Ashwagandha is considered to be an adaptogen. An adaptogen is any substance that helps the body function more towards its normal level, for example if cortisol is too high, it lowers it, and if it is too low, it raises it. Studies have shown Ashwagandha is capable of normalizing cortisol levels, whether they are too high or too low. References: 1. www.smart-publications.com. 2. Wilson, James. Adrenal Fatigue.

Walk MS is our rallying point, to help raise critical funds that support cutting edge research, drive change through advocacy, facilitate professional education and provide programs and services to help people with Multiple Sclerosis move their lives forward.
allows vital energy to flow naturally. Healing occurs multi-dimensionally i n f l u e n c i n g a p e r s o n ’s ch i ( v i t a l force), the energy field and centers for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual heath. A wo n d e r f u l a s p e c t o f e n e r g y healing is that it can create a deeply relaxed state where the mind, spirit, and body enter a place of healing. What better way to resolve stress? What happens during this time can be thought of as a chamber of healing that has no physical place. It is a place where the intelligence of spirit, mind, and body let go of harmful emotional and mental properties, let the body relax, and infuse one’s consciousness with an innate wisdom. It can awaken us to the Spirit within and our natural ability to heal and to create balance.
Results can be as varied as the resolution of physical or emotional pain, the resolution of conflict in one’s mind as answers surface to consciousness, and a feeling of closeness to Spirit. Feeling this good doesn’t come from a head of lettuce or an exercise bike. You exercise. You watch what you eat. But there’s something you should know—it’s not enough. Over time, our bodies have become deprived of the key nutrients and minerals required to reach and maintain optimum health and wellness. It’s a virtually unavoidable problem because of depleted topsoil that can no longer grow the nutrient-rich foods it once did. In addition, most of us are constantly exposed to toxins from our environment. Recent science suggests that the accumulation of these toxins in our bodies is one of the primary contributors to the alarming increase of obesity in America.
The Key is Nutritional Cleansing!
Wednesday, May 5th 2010 From 7:00-9:00 pm Best Western Airport Plaza Hotel 1981 Terminal Way Reno, Nevada 89502
Nutritional Cleansing is a science-based nutritional program that infuses the body with healthy nutrients not available in even the “healthy” foods we eat. This allows the body’s cells and organs to do what they were designed to do—naturally remove impurities. And if that’s not enough, there’s something else cleansing helps your body get rid of—excess fat! You’re invited to attend a FREE lecture to learn more about Nutritional Cleansing and how it can make you healthier. Your presenter will be Master Cleansing Coach, Peter Greenlaw—author and cleansing expert. RSVP by calling Jodie Daly at 408-206-7023. Call early—seats are limited for this one-night event! If you can’t attend, e-mail Jodie at jodiebdaly@gmail.com for FREE information on Nutritional Cleansing.
