hat a wonderful time of year! Spring is in full bloom, mother’s day is near, and Memorial Day offers long weekend festivities, and the sign that summer is around the corner. It’s also time to prep your flower and garden beds for the coming season. Find out how to have your own “Spring Fling” in Teresa Howell’s latest column. My favorite event in May: Mother’s Day. My family and I would celebrate with a special mother’s day brunch; and as I became a mother, the day had an entirely different feel. Although, our celebration did not change much; a brunch comprised of egg dishes, waffles, and an assortment of pastries and desserts, and of course, a mimosa or two. If you’re looking for something similar, check out the restaurant review, by Rachael Scala. You might just find a new favorite eatery! Be sure to dig deeper into this issue, featuring Women’s Health. With articles such as Soy Alternatives, Black Cohosh and how to stop heavy menstrual bleeding, you’ll find a variety of femaleoriented topics. With that, we hope you enjoy the sunny warmth and coming festivities…and may each day blossom with prosperity of growth. HB Pause. Breathe. & Be Well, Ffjorren Zolfahgar Editor & Content Director

pringtime blossoms fill the air with soft, sweet scents; while painting the vast green covering with an array of color. With different shades and sizes, buds and leaves, the blossom sends a message that the renewal of spring has sprung! Cherry blossoms, for instance, are quite symbolic in Japan. They represent mortality, with their amazing beauty and quick death. For this reason, they are often used in Japanese art, music and film; depicting a metaphor of the cycle or nature of life. As blossoms fade and wither, they leave an incredible legacy behind. For they do not bring down the life of the plant itself, they merely shed their annual skin. Blossoms represent the beauty and innocence within, and give promise to a new year of growth. HB

Laughter: A Therapeutic Ally

Written By Marilyn Sprague-Smith, M.Ed. At the turn of the 20th century (1900), U.S. women were most likely to die from infectious diseases and complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Today, in the first decade of the 21st century, 63 percent of American women die as a result of the chronic conditions of heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Heart disease leads the pack. Improving women’s health, and increasing awareness and understanding of women’s health issues, is the task of the Office on Women’s Health (OWH), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. OWH is celebrating the thirteenth annual National Women’s Health Week this year from May 13-19th as a way to accomplish its mission. The 2012 celebration starts on Mother’s Day and ends on the following Saturday. However, women’s healthcare has a therapeutic ally that cannot be confined to a one-week national celebration. It’s a proven women’s health enhancer and stress reliever--laughter. Laughter: A Heart-Healthy Activity It’s been said that laughter is the best medicine. A growing body of research supports the theory that laughter has therapeutic value and may be an antidote to heart disease.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

Do Music Lessons Make Kids Smarter? music experience had scores equivalent to two years ahead of their reading age, and these statistics improved with music experience.

Written By Ann Whitney

Research also shows that music touches “at risk” children in special ways. Music introduced into their environment seems to make them more relaxed and receptive to learning. Children with learning disabilities, who often have a hard time focusing when there is a lot of background noise, may be especially helped by music lessons.

Several studies by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (based at Brown University) explored the effects of music education on young children’s learning. The conclusions of these studies support the theory that music instruction can help build intellectual and emotional skills, facilitate children’s learning and strengthen other academic areas, such as reading and math. Also, these studies indicate that music can positively affect children (and adults) of all ages.

Other research findings show the following: • Children in elementary schools who were given enriched, skill-building music classes showed marked improvement in reading and math skills. Students in the program who had started out at lower reading and math skill levels than those of children in the control group caught up to statistical equality in reading and pulled ahead in math.

Learning Music, Computers, and Development: With the rise of the Internet and high-tech jobs that require computer skills, there seems to be less interest in music education these days. Fortunately, several studies by experts in the field are demonstrating that studying the arts--particularly music--can actually help develop skills used in learning about computers.

• Researchers found that children given piano lessons improved much more dramatically in their spatial-temporal IQ scores (important for some types of mathematical reasoning) than children who received computer lessons, or no lessons.

The conclusions of the Brown University studies are consistent with other research on music and its effect on child development. One study (by researchers at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California) shows that when three and four year old children were given simple piano lessons over a six month period, they performed 34 percent better than other children on IQ tests, some of whom had had computer lessons instead. The impressive results came from a study of 789 children from diverse social and economic backgrounds. One of the researchers stated that music training jump starts certain inherent patterns in parts of the brain responsible for spatialtemporal reasoning. On the other hand, computer lessons do not prompt children to think ahead or visualize, as they must do when playing music.

• A research team exploring the link between music and intelligence reported that music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children’s abstract reasoning skills, the skills necessary for learning math and science. • A McGill University study found that pattern recognition and mental representation scores improved significantly for students given music instruction for a three-year period. They also found that self-esteem improved while they were taking music lessons. Continued on Page 9

Several studies indicate that the reading level of students with one year of music was nearly one grade higher than their peers without such music training. Children with two years of

Do Music Lessons Make Kids Smarter? Written By Ann Whitney Continued from Page 7 • Students with experience in music performance and music appreciation scored higher on the SAT than students with no music education. 53 points higher on the verbal, and 39 points higher on the math for music performance; 61 points higher on the verbal and 42 points higher on the math for music appreciation. Selecting Music for Children: At around three years old, most children begin to take a real interest in music activities of all kinds. It is a good time for parents and teachers to begin mixing music with games that require body movement, such as clapping, waving, jumping and dancing. Sing-along games are ideal for initiating movement and bringing children together in enjoyable group activities. Children, age four to six, are more consistent music-makers, and are more aware of the messages in song lyrics. Children at this age are ready to sit attentively for a short performance, or listen to a short recording. Studies of children in this age group who play instruments also perform better on tests of working memory. Appropriate activities also include lessons in music appreciation, playing instruments and learning to write lyrics to simple melodies. Children, age seven to ten, can start learning that music has structure. Rhymes, repetition and experimenting with different sounds also can be used for speech and reading development. This is the ideal time to actively teach a child a musical instrument. Research indicated that children at this age will start showing the positive effects of music training in their academic performance. Music has proven to provide many more benefits to children (and adults) than simple entertainment. It has even proven to help patients recover from diseases or surgery more quickly, and with less pain. Currently, scientists are undertaking much research to learn the effects of music on the mind and body, yet we now know--from findings of several of the most prestigious researchers in the field--that music can have very positive effects on child development. ith every New Year there is always room for change. This is no different when it comes to your healthcare. The medical advancements made in the past several years provide more options for patients to consider. Unlike in the past, when you had severe degeneration in your knee, you waited for it to get bad enough to warrant a knee replacement; now, there are alternatives including orthopedic regenerative medicine. These procedures offer patients who suffer from acute or chronic pain a natural and effective treatment option.

Regenerative medicine utilizes your body’s natural healing ability to repair and regenerate damaged tissue such as ligament, tendons and muscles. The natural healing ability of the body involves blood and more specifically, platelets. It is well known, the regions of the body with good supply heal fast, and the regions with poor blood supply heal slowly. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and stem cells merely enhance your body’s natural healing ability. Unlike traditional treatments, such as anti-inflammatory medication and cortisone injections, which offer only temporary relief, PRP and stem cell grafts provide long term results and virtually no side effects, aside from soreness at the injected site. Furthermore, the injury heals normally and it eliminates scar tissue.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

May 2012

In many cases it eliminates the need for surgery and can cut healing time in half. These treatments are commonly used for soft tissue injuries such as tendonitis, acute and chronic muscle strain, muscle fibrosis, ligament sprains, and joint injuries or conditions such as arthritis, cartilage defects, and inflammation. With these biologic therapies we use Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), also known as Autologous Platelet Concentrate (APC), which contains the body’s growth factors and stem cells. Platelet and Prolotherapy are done through injections of healing solutions, or your own prepared blood, into damaged areas creates positive local inflammation, which “wakes up” or sets in motion the body’s normal healing process. It is a simple and painless technique that usually takes between 15 to 30 minutes. Any person who is suffering from any type of joint, tendon, ligament or spine problem, should give these therapies a try. These regenerative therapies use a simple, natural technique that stimulates the body to repair the painful area when the natural healing process needs some assistance. Instead of the more commonly used anti-inflammatory medications, which can have many side effects and do nothing to regenerate or enhance function. PRP and Prolotherapy aid the body in repairing damage, fast and effectively. Plus, you can get back to normal activity the next day with Prolotherapy, and in only three to five days with PRP. Heavy Menstrual Bleeding and How to Stop It

W

Written By Michael Gerber MD, HMD

omen who hemorrhage with each period, and suffer anemia and accompanying fatigue, don’t have much recourse in their allopathic (regular drug and surgery) doctor’s office. The usual scenario is to check an ultrasound of the pelvis to spot fibroid tumors of the uterus, or malignant looking ovarian cysts, or it may be determined that the endometrial stripe is thickened. The stripe is the lining of the uterus and should be between seven and 11 millimeters. If it is thicker, the patient is generally offered hormone therapy of a synthetic progestogen (Provera), or an endometrial ablation, which scrapes out the lining of the uterus, or birth control pills, which block hormone production. If all else fails, a hysterectomy is considered (let’s not mess around with this uterus any longer). None of these therapies answer the causal question of “how did I get here in the first place?” Amazingly enough, low thyroid levels have long been related to menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding). However, the low thyroid condition does not always show up on lab tests. Things like environmental pollutants, which are endocrine (hormone) disruptors, can block the thyroid message at the tissue and organ level. Patients with low body temperature (normal 1st AM under arm temperatures should be 98 +/-.2 degrees), coldness, fatigue, dryness, falling hair, depression, puffy appearance, low blood pressure, low energy, infertility, difficulty losing weight, family history of low thyroid and previously having children (the fetal thyroid can make antibodies against the mother’s thyroid) are all potential low thyroid symptoms or causes. Replacing natural animal thyroid is a good place to start for many women. Be cautious of “Synthroid,” as it is not bioidentical (like the body makes), and may block your own thyroid hormones. Look up a longer review of this issue on www.Mercola.com. In addition, other therapies such as vitamin K2 injections reduce abnormal bleeding quickly; as do other bioidentical hormones, herbals, homeopathic preparations and dietary adjustments.

Visit www.HBmag.com

Natural bioidentical progesterone creams or capsules balance estrogen dominance, which cause heavier periods and PMS, fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and fibroids. Fat makes estrogen and estrogen makes fat, a vicious circle, so weight loss can help. Many environmental pollutants mimic estrogen, bisphenol A (plastic water bottles) and other plastics, pesticides, and industrial wastes such as PCB’s, activate estrogen receptors. Cleaning up your diet and eating organic foods and pure water is important for getting on top of menorrhagia. Soy products are also estrogenic and are generally not good to eat unless they are fermented for several years, as they are in Japan. Sugar, cow’s milk, wheat (gluten) also disrupt the intestinal tract, leading to stress and abnormal nutrient absorption. Herbals such as Shepherd’s purse (Thalspi bursa capsularis pastoris) have long been used for heavy periods. One capsule of cayenne pepper (herbal grade), opened and stirred into a cup of warm water, can slow down bleeding quickly as it balances out blood flow in the body. Homeopathic Crocus, 6C or stronger, is great for hemorrhage with clots. Trillium Combination, from Marco Pharma, is great for any acute hemorrhage. Use 50 drops in water, followed by 30 to 40 drops five times daily. There are over 200 homeopathic medicines for menorrhagia, which can be prescribed by your Homeopathic, Integrative practitioner. Ergonomically Correct…

To Be or Not To Be? A

re you properly using ergonomics at work and home to help your posture and health? If you’re not, you’re increasing the possibility of pinched nerves, unbalanced muscles (one side over-developed compared to the other), repetitive strain injuries, and degenerative disease. These symptoms increase every day that you don’t apply the use of proper ergonomics. So what is ergonomics? At its simplest definition ergonomics literally means the science of work. So ergonomists, i.e. the practitioners of ergonomics, study work, how work is done and how to work better. What is proper posture? In recent years, ergonomists have attempted to define postures that minimize unnecessary static work, and reduce the forces acting on the body. All of us could significantly reduce our injury risk if we adhered to the following ergonomic principles: All work activities should permit the worker to adopt several different, but equally healthy and safe postures. Where muscular force has to be exerted, it should be done by the largest appropriate muscle groups available. Work activities should be performed with the joints at about mid-point of their range of movement. This applies particularly to the head, trunk and upper limbs.

Discover a Healthier Family

Here is a good example for sitting at a computer or desk.

By having a Healthier Nervous System which controls everything; by making sure your brain and body’s communication systems are working at their optimum.

Conventional wisdom holds that there is such a thing as a “correct” posture. In reality, posture change seems to be as important as posture correctness, especially with regard to the intervertebral discs in the spine. These discs lose fluid over the course of the day because of the weight they carry. It appears that posture change is essential to help pump fluid back into the discs. People who stand all day tend to have back problems--but so do people who sit still all day.

“...Dr. Jensen has changed my family’s lives. Our 9-year old daughter was told... she needed jaw surgery, and after seeing Dr. Jensen, the same doctors can’t find the problem...Dr. Jensen and his painless “Pro-Vision” is our 1st and highest recommendation for anyone dealing with physical pain... Thanks a million from the Spanial Family.”

Pro Adjuster

Pro-Vision!

One of the most important points of ergonomics is that injury comes from sustained stress. The body can handle a little bit of a stress for a short period of time without much in the way of problems.

A Breakthrough in Chiropractic Healing... a computerized scanning and adjusting system without the need of twisting and/or popping!

Stop reading right now and take the time to just notice how your body feels. Do you notice any discomfort or stress in your neck, shoulders, back, or lower body? Try fidgeting into a more comfortable position. Next time you notice stress, fidget again or do some stretches. Medical tip: Repeat that process for the rest of your life.

Health Through Chiropractic Call Dr. Tony C. Jensen

So when do you NOT want to be ergonomically correct? This is only done with the help of your chiropractor, medical doctor or physical therapist. If you have an abnormal curve or scoliosis of the spine, due to improper posture in the past or injuries, then you will want to position yourself so that you’re pushing into the curve. For example, if you have a curve in your neck to the right side (high side of curve) then you will do better setting your computer and main work area to the right side of you. This will make your body push into the curve; this will help slow down or stop your abnormal curve progression. If you’re getting chiropractic care, along with home/work exercises and stretches to help correct your posture, then your repair and recovery time will be quicker. HB

Using Blood to Heal P

Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

latelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection is part of an emerging new field of medicine called “Orthobiologics.” The philosophy of this field is to merge cutting edge technology with the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Platelets are small discoid blood cells made in the bone marrow. For a long time, they were thought to only have a role in blood clotting; but research over the past 20 years revealed that they also contain many compounds that play a big role in healing of injuries, and the development of new blood vessels in damaged tissue.

Most commonly today, PRP injections are used to treat a variety of joint, muscle and tendon injuries usually referred to as “sports injuries,” but it has possible applications to many other problems. Further use is being explored for treatment of chronic elbow, hip and knee bursitis and arthritis.

Blood normally contains four main components: plasma (the liquid part), red blood cells (these carry the oxygen and carbon dioxide from and to the heart), white blood cells (these form a major part of the immune system), and platelets.

Use of this technology, in injection form, provides delivery of a highly concentrated, potent cocktail of growth factors and cells, to stimulate accelerated healing.

Typically a blood specimen contains 93 percent red blood cells, six percent platelets and one percent white blood cells. The whole blood is withdrawn in the same manner as for any other blood test, and it is then spun in a centrifuge for 15 minutes. This separates the blood into three distinct layers, two of them are blood cells and one is the liquid portion called the plasma. The cell layers separate into the red blood cells and a layer called the “buffy coat.” The buffy coat contains the white blood cells and the platelets. This is what is withdrawn with a small volume of plasma that is known as PRP. It also contains a small number of stem cells, but that is a topic for discussion in another article.

Future generations of biologic injectables may target specific cells, rather than providing an assortment of non-specific healing properties, but PRP is available today for the treatment of a large variety of human problems. INGREDIENTWATCH

SoyAlternatives With our increased soy consumption, soy allergies are on the rise as well. Soy allergies are listed among the top eight most common in the world. In many cases soy allergies begin with a reaction to soy-based infant formula, in some cases the children outgrow this allergy, in others the soy allergy persists into adulthood. Most often signs and symptoms of a soy allergy are mild, for example, hives, or itching, to moderate such as abdominal pain, and digestive troubles. In rare and extreme cases, soy allergy can cause anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction. Tests can confirm whether soy is the culprit, if you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of an allergy.

I

n recent decades, soy has often been thought to be synonymous with “health food.” It is a common ingredient in many meatless and dairy-free foods; making it a popular choice for vegetarians, vegans, and the lactose intolerant. Soy is not an ingredient that is strictly limited to health foods. It is a common ingredient in all sorts of heavily processed food products, and non-food products alike. For example, soybean and soybean meal can be found in fast food items such as hamburgers and fries; soybean oil is used for cooking and frying, and soy-based emulsifiers can be found in many common candy bars and processed foods. Soy based inks are increasing in popularity, and soy can be found in many cosmetics as well. Soybean meal and hulls are often used as animal feed too. These are just a few examples, with nearly 73 million acres of US farmland dedicated to soy cultivation; it is nearly as prevalent in our food supply as corn.

Visit www.HBmag.com

Even if a person is not allergic to soy, there is emerging evidence that consumption of soy is not as healthy as we once assumed, even when it comes from an organic source. Soybeans are high in phytates, which block the absorption of minerals and lead to mineral deficiencies over time. They contain potent enzyme inhibitors, which lead to protein assimilation problems. These enzymes can only be deactivated through the process of fermentation, not regular cooking. This makes fermented soy products such as miso, natto, and tempeh, some of the best choices, if you can tolerate soy. Soy foods contain phytoestrogens, which can be disruptive to the endocrine system, and have been shown to depress thyroid function. These phytoestrogens are not removed through fermentation or other processing. While soy may be safe for occasional consumption, it is not advisable to rely on it as one’s main source of protein.

Myths of Heart Disease - PART I

MYTH 1

MYTH 2

High cholesterol (and LDL) is the #1 cause of heart disease in the country.

If I take a statin agent, I won’t have a heart attack. This is simply untrue. Low cholesterol (even rock bottom levels) reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of heart attacks. Many heart attacks still occur in people with low cholesterol levels, whether or not they take cholesterol lowering drugs or supplements. Other more important risk factors must be considered besides cholesterol, such as small LDLs, low HDLs, high fibrinogen, high homocysteine, high C reactive protein, and high insulin levels. Results from a National Health and Nutritional Survey showed that 47 million US adults have metabolic syndrome, (low HDLs, high triglycerides, high blood pressure, excess abdominal fat) most of which remains undiagnosed and untreated and substantially heightens the risk of heart disease even in the presence of low cholesterol.

Wrong. High cholesterol is among the risk factors for heart disease, but far from the leading factor. The most prevalent: Low HDL, along with small LDL particles. Of every 100 people with coronary heart disease, 60 to 70 will have low HDL and small LDL particles (not standardly tested for). Fewer than 30 will have high LDL. Why do we not hear more about low HDL and small LDL particles? Because treating them is not as profitable for drug companies. But, when it does become profitable to treat this more prevalent risk factor for heart disease, we can expect to hear about “the epidemic” that will justify billions of dollars on new drug expenditures (note the dates on the reference studies--this is not new data!).

Myths of Heart Disease - Part I Written By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B Continued from Page 20

MYTH 3 I feel fine and my stress test was normal. My doctor says I don’t have heart disease.

Functional medicine is on the crest of a new wave of chronic disease science, due to its holistic and cutting edge diagnostic approach. Fifteen to 20 years from now, these advanced testing procedures may become accepted by the standard medical community and insurance industry, but until then, it’s buyer beware; do your homework and make sure the doctor you choose is properly educated in Functional Medicine procedures.

This is among the most widely propagated fallacies spewed by many well-meaning primary care physicians, and even cardiologists. First, lack of symptoms should not be reassuring as most heart disease is silent--without symptoms and undetectable by conventional means, such as electrocardiograms and cholesterol testing. Second, stress testing is a miserable failure for screening asymptomatic people. Most future deaths and heart attacks, in fact, occur in people with normal stress tests (when symptoms are not present). The net result of this misperception is that most future heart attack victims are walking around feeling fine and unaware of the risk. Cholesterol can be high, low or in between, but all too frequently, fails to shed light on this murky situation.

Next Month, in Part II of Myths of Heart Disease, more on cholesterol: the lipid with the bad reputation, true cardiovascular disease risk factors, and cardiovascular disease and inflammation. HB References: 1. Gardner CD, Fortmann SP, Krauss RM Association of Small Low Density Lipoprotein Particles With Incidence of Coronary Artery Disease in Men and Women. JAMA 1996 Sept 18: 276 (11 875-81).

Functional Diagnostic Medicine takes a holistic, full-body, non-drug approach to cardiovascular disease prevention and management. In addition to the above mentioned cardiovascular markers (c reactive protein, homocysteine, fibrinogen, etc.) indicative of probable heart disease, one must look at specific essential fatty acid balance, liver detoxification status, general nutritional deficiencies, pathogenic viral and bacterial assessments, hormone testing, comprehensive stool analysis, toxic profiles (heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants). Any investigation less than this, into the various metabolic factors that negatively affect heart function, simply cannot predict heart health and cardiac disease susceptibility.

Laughter: A Therapeutic Ally Written By Marilyn Sprague-Smith, M.Ed. Continued from Page 5

In 2000 and again in 2005, a team of researchers at University of Maryland Center for Preventive Cardiology, led by the Center’s director Dr. Michael Miller, released study results which point to a strong connection between laughter and cardiovascular health. In 2000, Dr. Miller led a research team that conducted a study on the humor response comparison of 300 people. Fifty percent had suffered a heart attack or undergone coronary artery bypass surgery. Fifty percent were healthy, age-matched participants without heart disease. Miller said that the most significant finding was that “people with heart disease responded less humorously to everyday life situations. They generally laughed less, even in positive situations, and they displayed more anger and hostility.” He went on to say that perhaps laughter should be added to the list of recommended behaviors known to reduce the risk of heart disease, like exercising, not smoking and eating foods low in saturated fat.

Dr. Lee Berk, a pioneer researcher studying positive emotions/ behaviors and their biochemical/physiological effects on stress hormones and immune system components in the field of Psychoneuroimmunology at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, says “Laughter can relax the muscles, increase alertness and memory, reduce pain, lessen emotional stress and lower blood pressure.”

In 2005, Miller and his team of researchers released the results of another study. Using laughter-provoking movies to gauge the effect of emotions on cardiovascular health, the study showed that laughter appears to cause the tissue that forms the inner lining of blood vessels, the endothelium, to dilate or expand in order to increase blood flow.

With all the physiological and psychological health benefits evidenced by solid scientific research, leading-edge organizations in the Triad are embracing therapeutic laughter activities to reduce stress and enhance quality of work life for staff.

The results of their study point to a strong connection between laughter and cardiovascular health. “The magnitude of change we saw in the endothelium is similar to the benefit we might see with aerobic activity, but without the aches, pains and muscle tension associated with exercise,” says Dr. Miller. “We don’t recommend that you laugh and not exercise, but we do recommend that you try to laugh on a regular basis. Thirty minutes of exercise three times a week and 15 minutes of laughter on a daily basis is probably good for the vascular system.”

Employee Wellness at High Point Regional Health System (HPRHS), asked Certified Laughter Leader Marilyn SpragueSmith to help employees put laughter back in their lives. “Marilyn is showing us how to use laughter to lighten up our mental workload and bring a sense of joy, happiness and harmony into our daily activities,” says Sue Cumpston, Employee Wellness Coordinator for the health system. The program was brought to HPRHS as a community outreach service of Unity’s laughter club program.

Laughter: A Guaranteed Stress Reliever

You, too, can choose to let laughter be your therapeutic ally for increased health and wellness. Get involved in National Women’s Health Week by creating a personal health and wellness plan. Remember Dr. Miller’s heart-healthy prescription, “thirty minutes of exercise three times a week and 15 minutes of laughter daily.” Your heart, and every system in your body, will thank you. HB

Stress at work is a growing problem for women in the workplace. In one survey, 60 percent of employed women cited stress as their number one problem at work. Furthermore, levels of stress-related illness are nearly twice as high for women as for men. Once again, researchers are telling us that laughter has many physiological and emotional benefits that help to combat stress related illness. “When you are laughing, you discharge tension associated with four primary negative emotions--depression, anxiety, fear and anger,” says Dr. William Fry, a behavioral scientist, psychiatrist and Emeritus Associate Clinical Professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine of Stanford University.

Pelvic Floor / Incontinence K

achoo! Darn!! Your underwear is wet again – and maybe even your outer garment.

The problem lies in your pelvic floor. This is a group of muscles that form a sling or hammock across the opening at the bottom of your hip bones. These muscles keep the bladder, intestines, uterus (or prostate) in place and functioning properly. Damage, trauma, and scar tissue can disrupt the pelvic floor muscle tone and cause incontinence of the bladder, or even the rectum. Age, pregnancy, childbirth with its muscle tearing or episiotomy, family history, and hormonal status all contribute

Visit www.HBmag.com

to incontinence. Approximately one-third of U.S. women experience bladder leakage sometime in their lives. You may have heard that part of the pelvic floor, your Kegel muscles, can control this bladder leakage. The problem is you have to remember to tighten them before you sneeze or cough, which is not always the first thought when those reflexes hit you. The better plan is to make the Kegel contractions a natural reaction that you don’t have to think about.

24

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

May 2012

This natural response is accomplished through exercise. The routine is a tightening of the Kegel muscles, followed by their relaxation, and then a pushing outward of them. “The problem with doing this on your own,” says Amie Stoddard with Barbieri Manual Physical Therapy, “is that people tend to instead contract their gluteal muscles or adductors (butt cheeks or rectal muscles).” If you cannot cut off your urine flow in midstream, you may need a professional to coach you. Sometimes the whole pelvic floor is in constant constriction so it may be necessary to do some therapeutic release work on the muscles to alleviate their cramping. This work is much like a vaginal exam and is pretty up close and personal, but its reward is obviously worth it. In addition to, or even instead of incontinence, there are other signals that the pelvic floor muscles are constantly “frozen.” Since these muscles attach to the ilia, they can move these hip bones from their natural position. This can prevent you from having a flowing, easy walking gait, or a feeling of awkwardness, or having “two left feet.” This imbalance of the pelvis puts pressure on leg nerves, causing tightness of the leg muscles to the point of serious cramping. Pressure on these leg nerves can also result in real nerve pain. There may also be a sensation of cervical cramping between menses periods. Men are affected with incontinence also, primarily due to prostate surgery. This operation can leave scar tissue that is inflexible and therefore the Kegels cannot “pinch off” the urinary tract. Sometimes nerves are damaged so that tightening messages are not received by the muscles. Peter Barbieri says there are other contributing factors, such as a man’s occupation. A job that calls for prolonged sitting and twisting can cause muscle tension in the pelvic area, thus upsetting the pelvic floor’s muscle balance. Physical therapy once again includes locating the Kegels and then exercising them properly. Should pelvic floor muscle release be called for, the therapist utilizes an alternate port of entry than that used for women. There are many qualified therapists who can help you regain confidence in public. The financial trade off is no more pads or diapers, plus the stress of wondering whether their absorption will be adequate next time. HB References: 1. Amie Stoddard, P.T. Detoxification IQ D

Written By Dr. Mercola

r. Brian Clement is the medical director of the Hippocrates Health

Institute, which is one of the world’s oldest complimentary health centers. Dr. Clement started with the organization in 1975, and has been a director since 1980. Here he shares his considerable knowledge of how to improve your health. The primary focus of this interview is on detoxification, because this is an area that Dr. Clement has great experience with. The full program that Hippocrates offers is called the “Life Change Program,” and runs for 21 days.

“The main thrust of what we offer is not all of the nice things I spoke about. It’s education,” Dr. Clement says. “My objective as a director is to get people to not need me, the Institute, or you. We want people to be educated, to be totally responsible for their life and lifestyle. And in doing so, one of the primary biological factors is you have to eliminate waste from your body. … [A]ll of us live in an invisible cesspool, and we don’t know it. So all of these is taken into account here… Not only are we cleansing the body through large amounts of raw food, but also through infrared technologies, Vibrason units… lymphatic massage, deep tissue technology, psychotherapy… and colonic therapy...” There can be little doubt that toxic heavy metals and chemicals in our environment contribute to the vast majority of cancers we see today. HERBS&SPICES

Black Cohosh: Many Names, Many Uses Written By Allison Prater

C

imifuga racemosa, or Black Cohosh is a member of the buttercup family. Native to North America, it has also been known as black bugbane, bugwort, black snakeroot, rattleroot, and fairy candle. Though it is not a relative of Blue Cohosh, the two are sometimes used together, and have a synergistic, but not interchangeable relationship. A popular medicinal herb among many Native American tribes, the word Cohosh is derived from the Algonquin word “rough” or “gnarly,” referring to the texture of the roots of the plant.

May 2012

Many of Black Cohosh’s uses come to us from Native Americans who used the root to treat many gynecological issues, including menstrual discomfort and preparing the uterus for childbirth. It was also used to treat sore throats, kidney problems, depression, and even rattle snake bites. Today, it is still used for some of these purposes, in addition to relieving symptoms associated with menopause. Because it is highly regarded as a nervine and muscle relaxant, Black Cohosh has been used successfully for headaches, pain and muscle spasms as well. The antiinflammatory actions are helpful for muscular or neurological pain, and arthritis.

These issues will subside as the use is discontinued. Because if relaxes the uterine muscles, it should never be taken in early pregnancy, as it can cause miscarriage. It should only be used in late pregnancy, under the supervision of a health professional. Black Cohosh is helpful in relieving menstrual cramps and bringing on delayed menstruation. It also has a lot of benefit for menopausal women, and is used in combination with other herbs to help regulate hormonal balance. A wonderful herb for women of all ages, this herb thrives in rich, loamy soil. Its tall tapering columns of tiny white flowers have a strong, medicinal smell, which repels many common garden pests. A perennial, Black Cohosh can be propagated either from root cuttings or from seed. It does not enjoy extreme heat, so plant it somewhere where it has partial shade, and make sure it gets plenty of water during the hot months. This plant has so many potent uses that it is best used only under the direction or supervision of a health professional. HB

Early settlers of North America adopted the use of this herb from the Native Americans. The plant was popular with eclectic physicians of the late 19th century. They regarded it as one of the most effective uterine tonics. It was one of the main ingredients in Lydia Pinkham’s famous “Vegetable Compound,” and was taken by women throughout the early nineteenth century to relieve menstrual pain and nervous tension. Black Cohosh is often used in combination with Blue Cohosh in the last week of pregnancy to stimulate uterine contractions and prepare the uterus for labor. Black Cohosh helps relax the cervix and uterine muscles; it promotes regular contractions, and reduces blood pressure by dilating peripheral blood vessels. This can be helpful during labor when muscles in the back of the legs, low back and pelvis area begin to ache. This can also be helpful with overdue pregnancies.

SPIRITUALHEALTH “Going Within” Written By Rev. Jack R. Elliott, Author and Spiritual Life Coach

How to Recognize the Spirit Within You

N

ew Thought philosopher Ernest Holmes poses

this question: “How can we expect to realize God (Spirit) in the emptiness of space if we have refused to see God in those we meet? And how can we find God in those we meet and in the events that transpire around us unless we have first discovered God (Spirit) at the center old our being?”

Dear Rev. Jack, I believe that God exists and I know that I’m supposed to “see the God in others” and I’m okay with that. It seems compassionate and kind; but when someone else says that they see the God in me--well that feels wrong to me. I want to believe that God works through me, exists within me, but how do I know that it’s so? - Deb

Visit www.HBmag.com

30

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®

May 2012

Dear Deb, Ernest Holmes would say, it is only when we awaken to the idea that God is within each and every one of us that we can be open to seeing God working through everything and everyone around us. Therefore, if you see it in others, then you are at least open to the possibility (idea) that God does indeed work through you and does indeed exist within your total being. I’m going to give you a task. Write down the name of five people who you admire. They can be dead or alive; famous or not-so-famous. Then, I want you to write down at least five adjectives that describe why you admire each person. When completed, you’ll have at least 25 adjectives, and it’s perfectly alright if some words repeat. For example, one of my high school students chose Mother Theresa as one of the people she admired and she picked the adjectives; dedicated, thoughtful, self-sacrificing, compassionate, and loving to describe her. Once you’ve selected all five people, and have written the adjectives to describe each of them, I want you to circle any of the words that repeat. Perhaps you’ll notice that you used an adjective such as “loving” to describe three of your heroes or heroines. Here’s how your list might look: (Example graph) Mother Theresa Harriett Tubman Hilary Clinton My Mom Grandma Jones

Dedicated Fearless Thoughtful Loving Compassionate

Thoughtful Self-‐Sacrificing Smart Compassionate Determined

Self-‐Sacrificing Heroic Clever Self-‐Sacrificing Faithful

Compassionate Faithful Well-‐spoken Determined Loving

Loving Smart Determined Faithful Kind

Now, I’m going to ask you to finish the following sentence stem by inserting at least five of the words that repeated themselves when you described your hero or heroine. Here is an example using the graphic above: “I am loving, compassionate, determined, faithful, and self-sacrificing” Once you’ve written your sentence, read your sentence over and over again. That sentence is the demonstration of God working through you, and existing within your total being. You see Deb, you would not be able to see it in others if it were not true for you. What you admire in others--the adjectives that you’d use to describe the gifts that others possess--are the gifts that God (Spirit) has bestowed upon you. You are indeed an example of God’s best work. And if you find yourself “being human,” and forgetting “who you are” for a moment, return to your sentence stem and say it aloud. Say it daily, hourly or with every breath--just say it until you believe it! Thanks, Rev. Jack

GARDENING

pring S

M

y sister Beth is spending some time in Montana with her grandchildren. She called me to wish me a happy first day of spring. “I took the grandkids to the park yesterday,” she told me. “It was seventy-seven degrees out.” I looked out my window at the snow on the ground. Beth is lucky that you really can’t reach out and touch someone through the phone, because if you could, mine would not have been a gentle touch. The late spring is throwing off my gardening schedule. It’s two long months until the last frost date, but I have a lot of work to do before then. I need to put manure on all my garden beds. Ideally, I’d have done that last fall, but I couldn’t put the manure on until I’d cleaned off the debris from last summer, and as I explained in a previous column, garden debris was my fall décor. I don’t want to plant seeds directly in manure that has not had time to meld itself in to the soil. If time and weather won’t work it in, I’ll have to trowel it in myself. I’m too lazy for that kind of work, for one thing; for another, many garden experts recommend that once a garden bed has been established, it’s best not to disturb the layers of the soil. They believe that water and worms should move the nutrients to the roots, and the less mechanical interference with the soil, the better the texture will be. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I’m all for any method that gets me out of work. I’ve other tasks to do before I plant my June seeds. Some crops, like lettuces, radishes, and most members of the cole family, should be planted “as soon as the ground can be worked in the spring,” most experts say. When is that, exactly? Was it the time the ground could be worked in January? Or, the time in February? Or the one in March? Personally, I’m setting my sights on early April, although

I have friends in town who have greens and onions up already. I’m still waiting for the Sunset Western Garden Guide to publish a zone map that differentiates between the sheltered and heattrapping city and the windy and frozen environs of sagebrush suburbia. While I wait, I’ll use some plastic sheeting to hurry the season along for those seeds which can stand chilly--but not freezing-conditions, and then move the sheeting over to those plants which prefer hot to warm--like the melons and the sweet potatoes I’ll plant this year. The other task that remains is starting seeds indoors. I’ll wait until mid-April to start tomatoes, peppers, and celeriac. The onepound salad mix containers make admirable mini-greenhouses. I’ll pot up the tomatoes, peppers and larger plants. The celeriac I’ll just let grow in the mini-greenhouse. It grows slowly at first, and I’ve found that if I’m gentle in untangling the roots, it transplants easily and doesn’t shock. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll start the squash and melons indoors. Last year, I did, but by the time I set them out in June, they were looking pretty sad. I hedged my bets by planting the more seeds directly in the garden. Both produced like mad, although the sad stuff I transplanted produced first. I checked one task off my list; I’ve planted artichoke seeds in a salad container. Most of them are up, and in a few days I’ll pot them up. In mid-May, I’ll transplant them in the garden, in Wall-o-Waters, which I’ll remove in June. Artichokes are bi-annuals, but they’ll have their first “year” indoors now, and when I transplant them out, they’ll think it’s winter, and they’ll produce in the fall. The forecast calls for warmer weather, so maybe I can get started on my to-do list this weekend. And if there’s any justice in the world, it’ll blizzard in Montana. HYPNOSIS: The Habit Breaker

Talking to your Subconscious Mind Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

W

hen you consciously want to make changes, and you find that old habits are getting in your way, you experience stress because those old habits are held in place by your subconscious mind; and when the conscious and subconscious are in conflict, the subconscious will win. That’s because when we repeat behaviors for a period of time, the subconscious accepts the behavior as something you should continue doing, and as a result, it becomes almost second nature. For instance, when you first started driving, you had to use your fully engaged conscious mind to coordinate everything; watch traffic lights and other cars, apply the brake gently, etc. Now, your subconscious mind is in charge of driving most of the time. You can talk on the hands-free cell phone, change the radio station, yell at the kids and drink your coffee. Hopefully not all at the same time, but you get the idea--your subconscious mind learned how to drive and is going through the motions, while your conscious mind does other things. Actions that once took all your conscious attention have now become habitual. Habits are patterns stored in the subconscious. They’re automatic responses. That’s why the subconscious is the winner in any conflict between conscious and subconscious. Habits can be our enemy or our greatest resource. They’re neutral. They’re not for us or against us. If we learned poor eating habits as a child, then it’s likely we’ll continue with those habits. If we learned to eat healthy, then we’ll probably continue with those habits. If you’ve tried and failed to change any habit through will power alone, it isn’t always easy and that’s why. It takes about three weeks of conscious effort to create a new habit. This leaves a lot of opportunity for things to go wrong. During hypnosis, a shift of information (think electrical energy) occurs in the brain that cannot occur in a conscious state. This is why we can shift habits so quickly after hypnosis. However, intention plays a big part here. If you really want to change the habit, that desire is very powerful. But you still have free will. So if your spouse wants you to quit smoking, and you don’t want to, hypnosis isn’t going to help much. YOU have to want the change.

If you want to lose weight but you don’t want to change your eating habits, forget it. Hypnosis can help you want to eat healthy and want to get some exercise, when before you didn’t

THRIVE

What In The World Will It Take? A Documentary by Foster Gamble and Kimberly Carter Gamble Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt

F

oster Gamble is a direct heir to the Proctor & Gamble fortune. He was raised with what he calls “power and privilege,” but unlike what we might expect such wealthy individuals to do, he and his wife Kimberly have spent the last ten years researching reasons why there is such a wide discrepancy between the haves and the have-nots on this planet. They want to know why billions have nothing, and live in squalor and misery on less than a dollar a day, while a tiny number of people at the very top of the pyramid live with incredible luxury, taking in more money each month than they could possibly spend in a lifetime. Because of their research, Foster and Kimberly have become convinced that there is an elite group of people working very hard to control the rest of us.

back, which we are well programmed to do. The video explores subjects such as the suppression of cures for cancer and other diseases, as Big Pharma focuses on developing chemicals for treatments, not cures. When someone is cured, they don’t need the meds any more. When you’re just treated, you need the meds for the rest of your life. This documentary covers thirteen subjects, from New Energy technology to economics, science, spirituality, media, justice, liberty, health, environment, education, our programmed worldview, relationships and even the suppression of information coming from ET/UFO contacts. Some of our top scientists, inventors, doctors, authors, activists, visionaries, and business leaders explain why their own experiences have shown them that something is terribly wrong with the way things are going, not only in America, but all over the world.

As they followed the trail of money and control, they came upon a story of power and manipulation, unlike anything they could have imagined. This resultant documentary shines a bright light on the activities of the families behind the big banking institutions, such as the Rothschilds, Rockefellers and Morgans, and how they have manipulated and influenced almost every area of life, from commerce and politics, to media and food production. Experts explain in simple terms how these wealthy and powerful families brought about our fractional banking system; how their banks create money out of thin air, then loan it to us and expect us to spend the rest of our lives paying it

Visit www.HBmag.com

After years of researching these subjects and interviewing experts, Foster and Kimberly Gamble have become convinced, along with thousands of other people that the elite international group is well along on their agenda of total control. It has become increasingly clear that they have the means, the motive and the opportunity to establish an agenda for total global rule. You may have heard of it as the “New World Order.” Before you dismiss this as just another “conspiracy theory,” be aware that you have been programmed to do just that.

And be aware that the information in this documentary is very different from just an “opinion piece,” as it includes information from some of the top people in very diverse fields, people who can see what’s happening and have the courage to speak out. That takes a lot of courage, for many who have spoken out have simply disappeared, or have had their homes and labs raided, and their inventions confiscated. They have had their funding mysteriously cut or were denied tenure, or actually lost their jobs and livelihoods.

Ideas regarding what we can do, and what is already being done to counteract this plan, are listed on the video and website. The website at www.thrivemovement.com presents extensive documentation of everything in the film, as well as additional information, quotes, video clips, graphics and photos. Research is ongoing and new information is constantly being included. It would be easy to follow your programming and dismiss this as just another “wacko idea,” but there are too many people who have been aware of these activities for years. This DVD is being reviewed by publications all over the country and is quietly going viral. Burying our heads in the sand and being described as “sheeple” is no longer an option. If you have been harmed by the housing collapse, the slow economy and the resultant dearth of jobs, you’re experiencing the American part of this global takeover plan.

In the early 1900’s, the brilliant scientist Nicola Tesla developed the ability to transmit electrical energy through the air like radio waves, where they could be picked up by an antenna. But right before his demonstration to the world, banker J.P. Morgan shut down Tesla’s funding, and the project was terminated. Morgan owned many copper mines and was making a fortune from all the copper wires used to conduct electricity. The suppression continues to this day. The U.S. Patent Office seized over 5,000 alternative energy inventions in the name of “national security.” We could have been freely accessing a universally abundant energy resource, but the sale of energy is very big business, so the corporate and financial elite who control the conventional sources are not about to let anyone enjoy free energy, no matter how poor or elderly they may be.

But America is a tough nut to crack, with our culture of selfdefense and love of liberty. During WWII, the plan of the Germans and Japanese was to conquer Europe and Asia first, then attack America in a pincer movement coming from East and West at the same time. America was known to be the last bastion of freedom and resistance. That conquest didn’t work out because we got into the fight early enough to foil their plans. So, becoming aware of what’s being planned for us now is the first step. Of course we’re not looking at armed invasion from without. That’s what makes all this so hard to grasp. It’s a takeover from within. So, become informed and then decide what you can do personally to regain your freedom. There are specific ideas on the website.

But New Energy is just one example. Suppression reaches into every sector of free thinking, where the elite are tightening their control. Th i s p l a n i s n o t a n e w development. It’s been going on for decades in America and hundreds of years in Europe. In 1913, Woodrow Wilson said, “Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men’s views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the fields of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of something. They know there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not speak above a whisper when they speak in condemnation of it.”

Here’s to the amazing personal strength, positive energy and determination of Americans to regain the freedoms that, by design, are slowly being taken away from us by regulation; by the giant corporations that run our country; by economic hardship fostered by the banking elite; by programming through the corporate media and through constant electronic surveillance. Order your copy from www.thrivemovement.com website. HB

This documentary and supporting website will be the first step for many of us in becoming aware of what’s going on. For others who have had well-founded suspicions, and have been researching and discussing this for years, the video is a huge confirmation, a breath of fresh air, and the website is a vast repository of information that it would have taken individuals decades to collect, even if we had had the time. The video has been dubbed in ten languages and will soon add four more.

The Miser and The Soul Written By Andy Drymalski, EdD

A

re you a miser towards your soul? Do you offer it only the crumbs from your table, the loose change in your purse, or the last few minutes of a busy, ego-driven day? Your soul calls out for change, and you give it two nickels and a dime. It asks you to go to school, and you say you “don’t have time.” It invites you to love but you object, “That’s too risky.” It says “live life with passion,” so you order yourself a whisky. It says “talk with me,” and you say, “You’re my first choice, but tonight is Survivor and tomorrow is The Voice.” It says “let me heal you,” but you say “I can’t afford it.” You want the gift of your soul, but

without paying for it. It gives you a dream, and you give it back. Should you carry your heart in a garbage sack? And then one day you realize you had it all backwards. You put your soul last, when you should have put it first. You set it off to the side, when it should have been at the center. You made it one of many, when it’s the only thing you’ve got. ASTROLOGY

ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK VITAL, LIFE-GIVING IDEAS IN A TIME OF PROFOUND CHANGE Written By Eric Francis

Horoscope for Health | May - 2012

T

he Sun is now in Taurus. May is the month of Beltane, that Pagan holiday that blends sex and money. The usual date for celebrating this ancient holiday is May 5. This combination of themes isn’t as strange an idea as it sounds, when you consider it in the context of fertilizing the fields with love and passion – the fields that will feed the community for the next year. Also in May, Venus stations retrograde. That happens in Gemini on the 15th, and it’s an invitation to review our history of love, and the odd tendency we might have to feel two ways about ourselves, or people we care about. Venus retrograde leads directly to the Venus Transit of the Sun on June 5. This is a rare event--the next one happens in 2117. is, don’t try to understand what makes no sense at all. Perhaps understanding will come, but I suggest you focus on what you recognize inherently, and what speaks to you in a language you comprehend. You may always feel like you have two distinct entities living in your psyche, though the difference now is that one is willing to listen to the other.

Aries (March 20-April 19) Finally, you can make some progress, though lately it’s felt like catching up. That still counts. Don’t skip steps – make each decision carefully, focus on the details and don’t lose sight of the big picture. Elements of your astrology are making you restless, as if you have the feeling that something big is about to happen. You need to coexist as peacefully as you can with that sensation, and keep your focus on what you’re doing, what you’re planning and what you know is necessary. Integrity is crucial now, but I’ll remind you that integrity means integrated: the different aspects of your life working together, rather than separately or against one another. Part of making that happen means standing as a strong, focused center of your experience, and more precisely, the innovator of your own life.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) Something special happens this month – the Scorpio Full Moon coincides with Beltane, to the day. The chart looks like you become a magnet for many things that exist outside you or your personal space that you would like to invite into your life more closely. This is absolutely positively the time to stay visible and be social, and to approach anyone you’re attracted to with confidence. Not everyone is going to respond – but that leaves many other possibilities. Keep the conversation moving. There’s an old rule about cocktail parties, where you’re supposed to circulate and not speak to anyone for more than five minutes. This allows you to taste the energy of many different people, while keeping the social environment light and flexible. From these encounters you will notice who you want and who wants you. Go for mutual – really, truly mutual.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) Remember what is important to you. Remember, and at the same time, learn. There is a message in your chart about seeing the other side of something – a way of life, an idea about yourself, a basic value you hold. You’re not typically given to exploring what you think is precisely opposite what you might normally do, though this would be an exceptionally healthy thing to work into your routines. You’re about to see how valuable it is when you can step out of your point of view and consider what you might have considered strange, threatening or irrelevant in the past. This is just one of many occasions you will have to reinvent yourself from the inside out. True freedom is based on your ability to adapt to your circumstances and your desires.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) The Sun reaches one of the peaks of its path through the seasons this month, arriving at the hotspot in your house of career, reputation and noteworthy success. This could have the effect of bringing what seemed like promise and potential to life. Therefore, I suggest you try your luck when it comes to anything involving the work you do or the reputation you have. Make contact with those who are in a position to help; they will be impressed by your sincerity and solid values. Current developments are as much about what you’ve accomplished in the past as they are about your potential now; right now the two are closely related. Keep your eyes on your vision of what is possible; which is to say, stretch a little and reach for what you think might be impossible.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) There’s an actual conversation going on within your soul space – not the usual gossip. You seem to be making an agreement with yourself about what it means to feel good about your existence. You’re working out this dialog in the midst of a world that seems to go increasingly mad – and the most reassuring thing you can learn is that you’re not crazy. One hint I can offer

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) Mars is now traveling direct in your birth sign, after a long spell of retrograde motion. You are now doing a lot better at working with yourself: at making goals and moving efficiently in whatever direction you set. This month you have a lot of support in doing that. What is most boldly emphasized is your long-term, long-range vision for yourself. Think in terms of the best possible outcomes. Allow yourself to think big, mainly by setting aside any concerns about the details that might hold you back. Once you catch the wind at your back, those details will not seem nearly as meaningful or significant, but you’ll take care of them just as well. They key is letting any form of worry get in the way of what you want. Perhaps a tall order – but right now, not really.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) Remember that God isn’t always watching you. You’ve heard that He is lots of times, and at least let’s consider that it’s a disturbing thought; what you do isn’t anybody’s business but your own. That is, it’s not if you don’t make it so, therefore, take your space. You might actually have to do something like experiment and consider the consequences later – if there are any. That’s the problem with thinking you’re spied on: guilt makes it difficult to know what you’re really entitled to experience. Therefore you have to stretch that particular boundary and see what you discover once you do. One risk you run is the discovery that you could have had a lot more pleasure in your life, which I would rate as a positive, given that you’re still very much alive.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) An old expression goes, “You cannot be fully committed part of the time.” Therefore, allow yourself to be fully committed all of the time. Set aside the idea that life is full of contradictions and paradoxes, and recognize the ways that your different talents, ambitions and favorite activities support one another. Right now many people are living with the sensation of “so much to do, I don’t know where to start.” Therefore, the most meaningful thing you can do is start, and keep track of where you are with each item on your agenda. Gradual progress on each item on a daily or weekly basis will be enough – for now. There will be a time when you select certain projects or goals and really accomplish something, but that moment is still a few weeks off

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) If you have any fear of settling down into a space you love, now is the time to get over it. I am picking up some kind of “security phobia” in your charts, as if when faced with the potential to be comfortable and set up in a solid place, you get nervous. You may not have always been this way, and I suggest you remind yourself of a time in your life when that was not the case. Part of any anxiety about things being good is an acknowledgment of how badly things can go on this planet; therefore it sometimes feels better to live as if they’re already that way. Though as Lou Reed has said (and I know I’ve quoted this before), you can’t count on the worst always happening. True fact – it hardly ever happens. Therefore, relax and discover.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) What has seemed like an impasse in your life the past few months is about to burst into more movement than you’ve experienced any time lately. You may feel like you’re exceeding your speed limit or some unspoken agreement that seems to limit your happiness. No such agreement is binding you today – though it may seem like one is, if you worry too much about how others perceive you. This is a message you’ve been getting over and over again – focus on people, not what you suspect their concepts might be. If you have a mission to accomplish or a role to play, the opinions of others matter not – the only thing that you need to concern yourself with is feeling confident you’re doing the right thing. You should know – you’ve thought about it long enough.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) You have not lost your magic touch – in fact you’re about to discover just how much stronger it’s become. One thing I suggest is that you concentrate your energies. Stay grounded; stay on-task. For the moment, you might consider remaining close to home so that you don’t distract yourself with the need to adjust or adapt to externals. If you are selecting from among creative projects, focus on the most daring, dangerous or experimental. If you are selecting from among relationship opportunities, focus on the desire that feels right, and that speaks to you the most clearly. Everything that’s right and true is going to have that sensation of concern that it’s a little out of bounds, a little too much. That’s the idea: keep your connection to the dark side, so that you can keep your connection to the light.HB

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) You’ve been incredibly patient for a Sagittarius, especially during the past three months. You haven’t lost any ground – everyone else has been involved in their own version of working through seeming setbacks. I know that you keep getting handed these tests of your focus and attention to detail, and yet you may be discovering that it’s within your nature to work things out until they are just exactly right. This comes with a certain kind of pleasure and the feeling of control – though when the moment arrives to let go and take your chances, I suggest that you do so boldly. You may soon encounter what looks like a narrow opportunity, the kind you have to fit sideways to get into. Yet you’re more likely to experience that as an invitation than as a deterrent.

KIDSCORNER

S

pring is in the air, with the warmer weather and school ending soon, most kids might think that it is okay to get lazy early. But the truth is your grades and test scores matter just as much as they did in the beginning of the year. To help you keep up the good work as the school year ends, let’s continue to review more of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens,” by Sean Covey.

“Kids Corner”

Written By Ariana Purcell

The next chapter is all about Habit 4, which is to “Think Win-Win.” The author explains to us that when he was younger, he used to always think about himself not being the best, but just better than most of the people. This is a Win-Lose attitude, which is not what you want to have. You want a Win-Win attitude towards life, an attitude that would say, hey, I can win, and so can you!

After reading these different attitudes, you can define yours. Some of you might have split attitudes, some might only have one. Whatever attitude you have chosen for yourself doesn’t matter, because in the end, you only want to be striving for the Win-Win attitude towards life. Make sure to always think positive, and think positive of other people and of yourself as well. Always believe in yourself and do the best you can possibly do! Have a great month of May, and remember to strive for the Win-Win attitude! HB

Lunch, http://freshiestahoe.com Celebrate your closest friends in a laid-back, health-conscious venue, Freshies in South Lake Tahoe. Referred to as “grown up Hawaiian with a twist,” the exotic menu is nutritious and dense. Opened in 2000 by Melodie and Erik, Freshies transforms oftunhealthy Hawaiian cuisine into wholesome and flavor-rich masterpieces. Menu items are comprised of organic produce and chicken, locally sourced wines, and is also entirely glutenfree (save the homemade pasta). If you’re indecisive like me, order a few things to share. In the summer, you’ll have plenty of room on the upstairs deck to tuck into the famed fish tacos (try your fish blackened), while sipping on Pliny the Elder with your girlfriends. Start with quinoa and sweet potato cakes with sweet chili sauce or portabella mushroom curry. Seeking greens? Salads are available in half portions and are still quite sizeable; try the vibrant Crunch Salad with your choice of fish. Though limited on space, you’ll feel welcomed and well attended to. Freshies has been a local’s favorite for years, for good reasons. Check out some of their events such as the Lake Tahoe Women’s Center fundraiser, where cooks and servers switch places for the night; or, their local’s appreciation night, in which the winners of the drawing dine for free on the deck over summer. HB Squeeze In (South Reno) – 25 Foothill Rd, Reno, NV 89511; 775-853-6090. Breakfast and lunch Mon-Sun, 7am-2pm, http://squeezein.com The sister restaurant of two other locations, family-owned Squeeze In of South Reno beckons larger groups and families of all ages to revel in hearty brunch. In light of the coziness of the original stop in Truckee, South Reno’s location has more room to spread out. Let the kids draw on the walls as you pour over the large menu, with over 50 omelettes, share-worthy sandwiches, and the veggie-heavy HOP options (Healthy Obsession Program). No items on this menu are prepared with oil, and toast is un-buttered. Breakfast potatoes, albeit delicious, are easily substituted with fruit or tomatoes with cottage cheese. You are sure to feel accommodated and relaxed here. The cheerful staff happily lends a hand with creating a perfect brunch, and making the kids happy. Teddy bear pancakes fly out of the kitchen first so the kids aren’t free to toggle with the eclectic décor once they tire of writing on the walls. You may relish in the nourishing, guilt-free Shi’s Superfood Scramble, made of egg whites and a plethora of vegetables, or, share a burrito with your significant other if you’re past breakfast mode already. Bottom line--the Squeeze In will leave everyone in your party happy.

HYPNOSIS: The Habit Breaker Talking to your Subconscious Mind Written By June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt Continued from Page 33 want to do either, but it cannot force you to eat healthy or exercise. So, if you really want to change something in your life, you need to be willing to commit to the change that you desire. If you have halfheartedly “tried” lots of things in the past and have failed, then your expectation might be that everything you ever “try” is doomed to fail as well. That expectation can be a type of hypnosis. If you continue telling yourself that nothing will ever work for you, then you’re programming your subconscious to make sure nothing works. What the subconscious expects to happen will happen. Don’t use the word “try” when you’re starting something new. That word means you have a psychological way out. You’ll “try” something, and if it doesn’t work, you’ll “try” something else. That way your subconscious mind never becomes convinced that you really want the change. Remember Yoda in Star Wars? He said, “There is no try. There is only do or not do.” See how that’s such a different mindset? This can save you a lot of time and grief. If you’re not really committed, don’t start it. You’ll just fail again and in doing so, that will program your subconscious even deeper to believe that you can’t do it. But if you really want to make some changes, enhance your life and increase self esteem, if you really want to get into the mindset and habit of “winning,” then programming your subconscious mind through hypnosis will do it. And as you succeed, the subconscious sees that you are doing it, and that desired behavior then becomes the new habit. Hypnosis is a pleasant relaxing experience. It is said that a session of hypnosis is worth eight hours of solid sleep. Although hypnosis is not sleep, it might be described as mind awake, body asleep. Some people go very deep, and remember hearing only a few of the suggestions and directions they decided upon for their hypnosis. Others go into a very light relaxed state, but it doesn’t matter--each is highly effective. In 1958, the American Medical Association approved hypnosis as a medical support tool and in 1960 the American Psychological Association endorsed hypnosis as a branch of psychology. Today, hypnosis is a highly effective medical tool used to relieve pain, assist with preparation for surgery and dentistry, and is widely used to stop smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, address allergies, eliminate PTSD, help increase memory, aid in self esteem, reduce love pain, and assist in dozens of additional health problems or social challenges. Your subconscious mind is a wonderful resource when you use it to attain what you want. We don’t know everything about the subconscious mind, but science is learning more every day. Right now we know enough so that we can use it to help us live a wonderfully satisfying life of high self esteem--with a real experience of control and empowerment. HB References: 1. Vitamin B Complex: Simplifying Your Intake Written By Kevin Vania From dairy products to fresh fruits and vegetables, we all know that we should eat a well-balanced variety of foods in order to get the vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to function properly. Scientific evidence suggests B vitamins are some of the most important vitamins we should always make sure to include in our diets. Vitamins are complicated molecules that we need in very minute quantities to stay healthy, and to prevent a wide range of diseases. Each vitamin has an irreplaceable role in the body’s metabolism and they are essential to our health. There are eight B vitamins. They generally function as coenzymes in biochemical transformations for important bodily functions. Over the years, governmental regulations have been put into place in the United States, making it mandatory for many foods like whole grain products to be fortified with B vitamins. However, intakes above the Reference Daily Intake (RDI) may be particularly important in people with defects in the absorption of these vitamins, especially in aging adults. So, if you’re not already taking a vitamin B complex, you may want to consider it!

Common foods in the U.S. containing thiamine include bread products, grains, and ready-to-eat cereals that have been enriched or fortified with the vitamin. Most plant and animal tissues contain traces of riboflavin. Dairy products, especially milk, are the richest food source of riboflavin. Niacin (B3) refers to nicotinamide and nicotinic acid. It functions in energy production at a cellular level and helps keep the skin, nervous system, and digestive system healthy. High doses of niacin have been shown to lower cholesterol.

Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) for Adult B Vitamin Intakes

Mammals cannot synthesize most vitamins. Niacin is different in that our bodies make it from tryptophan, an amino acid found in protein-rich foods like meat, fish and poultry. Foods including beans and liver also contain niacin in the free form.

Pantothenic acid (B5) is needed for the synthesis of coenzyme A, a cofactor for many processes that influence growth and development. It is essential to almost all forms of life and it is found in virtually all plant and animal cells. Foods like chicken, beef, potatoes, oat cereals, tomato products, liver, kidney, yeast, egg yolk, broccoli, and whole grains are all major sources of pantothenic acid. Dietary deficiencies of the vitamin are very rare since it is widely distributed in the foods we eat.

* RDIs by the Institute of Medicine, 1998.

Pyridoxine (B6) functions as a coenzyme in the metabolism of amino acids that help the body break down protein. It also helps maintain the health of red blood cells, the nervous system, and parts of the immune system.

The B vitamins are: thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folate (B9), and cobalamin (B12).

As with vitamin B5, pyridoxine deficiencies are rare since the vitamin is widely distributed in vegetables, cereal, and animal foods.

Thiamine (B1) and riboflavin (B2) function as coenzymes in the metabolism of carbohydrates and certain amino acids to help the body produce energy.

a coenzyme in reactions involving the production of hormones. Milk, liver, eggs, and a few vegetables are the most important natural sources of biotin in human nutrition. Less common foods that are rich sources of the vitamin include brewer’s yeast and royal jelly, which comes from the glands of honeybees. Folate (B9) helps cells in the body synthesize DNA. It is important in the production of red blood cells and is required for normal cell division. Folic acid is the most stable form of folate; it is the form used in vitamin supplements and fortified foods in the U.S. There is evidence that folate may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, and psychiatric and mental disorders. Folate supplementation is also particularly important in pregnancy as it significantly reduces the chances of negative pregnancy outcomes such as neural tube defects. The greatest contribution of folate in the U.S. diet comes from fortified cereals and vegetables like green beans, green peas, lettuce, and cabbage. Organ meats such as liver are especially rich in folate. Cobalmin (B12) is an important part of the body’s growth and development. It is a coenzyme in the production of blood cells, nervous system function, and the expenditure of carbohydrates. Vegetarians and vegans have a high risk of B12 deficiency because unlike other B vitamins, B12 is not a normal constituent of plant foods. Vitamin B12 is found mainly in animal foods including shellfish, organ meats, and a few kinds of fish. These foods are not a part of the average diet and it has become a routine medical practice to check for B12 deficiencies in patients who exhibit common symptoms of anemia. Like most vitamins, many of the B vitamins have metabolic interrelationships in which they work together to produce essential cofactors that assist in biochemical transformations. They are dependent on one another in order to work properly.

May 2012

For example, both folate and vitamin B12 are required for the formation of 5,10-methylene tetrahydrofolate, an essential cofactor in normal DNA synthesis. Inadequate folate or B12 intake causes anemia, a disorder in which there are too few red blood cells. Elevated DNA damage and altered gene expression are also important risk factors of cancer. Therefore, many doctors and health professionals recommend adults take a daily vitamin B complex to reduce the risk of cancer. Several studies found that supplementation with a vitamin B complex led to decreased anxiety, improved well-being, energy, and decreased stress in both men and women. These benefits are another important aspect of good personal health. Given the scientific evidence behind the many possible health benefits of B vitamin supplementation, it seems more important than ever to make sure we are getting an adequate supply of these vitamins. So, consider the information that’s out there and if you want to start taking simple steps to maintain good health, just remember to take your vitamins! HB References: 1. ZESTY ASPARAGUS

CHEESE AND ONION PIE This “pie” has been a family favourite for about 25 years. A dear friend of mine from Germany shared this with me many years ago. It’s quiche-like, but not as many eggs in the filling.

Spring is really sprung when the green tips of asparagus push up through the moist loam of my garden. Asparagus in any form is exciting to my palette, but recently a friend of mine passed on a quick and simple recipe that will certainly be a “fav” from now on! I couldn’t resist adding mushrooms to the mix, and a few sliced almonds, too.

INGREDIENTS: Dough:

Filling:

2 C. unbleached white flour

2 C. sautéed onion

2/3 C. butter

3 eggs

1 tsp. salt

¼ t. nutmeg

1 egg

¼ t. paprika

3 T sour cream

¼ t salt….unless you add ¾ C. crisp bacon, crumbled (then omit salt)

INGREDIENTS:

¾ C. sour cream

11/2 to 2 lbs asparagus; washed and cut in 1” pieces 1 lb. meadow mushrooms, sliced 2 T. butter

2 T. Dijon mustard ½ lb sliced mushrooms, any variety (optional) ¼ C. sliced almonds (optional)

2 T. balsamic vinegar

½ C. guyere cheese, grated ½ C. emmenthal cheese, grated

TANTALIZING TURNIPS Yes, I know, most folks would think this is an oxymoron! Years ago, high in the mountains, both kids and turnips grew extremely well. However, the kids turned up their noses at the turnips, so I had to get creative, as they were a good keeping staple in my root cellar…. the turnips, not the kids! Of course, the kids liked cheese of any kind, so I decided this was where the twain would meet!

An old Aussie recipe, finicky, but worth the effort; take care not to over-bake.

INGREDIENTS: ½ C. butter ½ C. sugar

INGREDIENTS:

½ C. golden corn syrup or light molasses

Two large turnips, yellow or white.

½ C. flour, sifted

Sauce: 2 C. whole milk or 2 C. half and half (for richer, creamier sauce) 2 heaping T. corn starch ½ t. salt ¼ t. paprika

pinch of salt

1½ C. cheddar cheese, grated (or your preference)

1 T. brandy or extract 1 t. ground ginger

1 T. mixed dried organic parsley and celery leaves, crushed for garnish

½ pint heavy cream, whipped; or “cool whip”

¼ t. white pepper

HOW TO PREPARE:

HOW TO PREPARE:

1. Put butter, vinegar and mustard in a large, heavy skillet over medium high heat. When melted stir in asparagus pieces.

Dough: 1. Knead dough for about 10 minutes; let stand about 15 minutes.

2. Increase to high heat, stirring occasionally for about 5 minutes.

2. Roll out on floured board to just a little thicker than you would a regular pie crust.

3. Continue on high heat, adding mushrooms until they’re tender and asparagus is slightly tender, but with some “crunch” to it!

3. Press into 2 8x9 rectangular pans, or 1 10x17 jelly roll pan. Chill for about an hour. 4. In the meantime, prepare…

4. Throw in the almonds, stirring for about a minute. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Filling: 1. Mix all ingredients together in large bowl; spoon over chilled crust. 2. Bake at 400 F for about 35 minutes.

HOW TO PREPARE:

HOW TO PREPARE:

Preheat oven to 325 F.

TO PREPARE TURNIPS:

1. In saucepan over medium heat, melt together butter, sugar and corn syrup or molasses.

1. Wash and peel two large turnips, yellow or white.

2. Cool slightly.

2. Cut into 1 - 1 ½” chunks; cover with water and boil until tender.

3. Sift flour with ginger; stir slowly into buttered mixture, finally adding brandy or extract.

3. Drain and set aside in large bowl.

4. Drop a teaspoon at a time, with plenty of space between (6 drops per cookie sheet) onto a well greased cookie sheet.

TO PREPARE SAUCE: 1. In medium saucepan over medium heat, combine cold milk and corn starch, whisking to blend. Cook, stirring often until mixture thickens.

5. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove one at a time from cookie sheet with thin metal spatula; roll each biscuit around the handle of a wooden spoon. Let cool. Remove from handle and set aside. (If the snaps get too hard, pop them back in the oven for a few seconds, then remove and roll). These can be stored in an airtight container for a few days.

2. Add salt, paprika, pepper and grated cheese; continue cooking over low heat for a few minutes. 3. Pour cheese sauce over turnips, mix and place in a serving bowl, sprinkling with garnish. Serve immediately.

7. Just before serving, snaps can be filled with whipped cream from a piping bag with a small star nozzle and piped into each end of the biscuit. OR pressurized (real) whipped cream can be used. visit www.HBmag.com for more delicious recipes!

Raw Umeboshi Sisho Pasta Submitted By Marie-Claire Hermans from Ravishing Raw Open a cupboard in any random Japanese kitchen and you will find a jar with Umeboshi in it. These small, pickled and salty plums have been praised since ancient times, when they were once used to purify water, beat fatigue, promote bone health, and to heal food poisoning and dysentery. Their extremely high levels of organic acids and minerals impact every facet of your health, as a woman. If you are new to Umeboshi, you will love the refined and softened flavor in this recipe. Combined with the exotic freshness of Sisho leaves (which are also used to tan the plums during the fermentation), and subtle sharpness of Daikon, this teasing starter will make your guests ask for more… Tools You Need Personal blender/ blender or hand mixer Knife Julienne peeler Preparation Soak the plums for about three hours, and renew the water each hour to soften the taste Continued on Page 54
