Cranberries
Dear Readers,
Written by Marie Harger
C
ranberries have a rich red depthness that makes them visibly beautiful and a tart and tangy flavor adding a special touch to any dish. They are harvested in the fall and without them our holiday feast would feel incomplete. Cranberries were first used by Native Americans, who discovered the wild berry's versatility as a food, fabric dye, and healing agent. The cranberry industry has a long history. The first commercial cranberry beds were planted in 1816. Today cranberries are farmed across the northern United States and Canada. The name cranberry derives from “craneberry” given this name by early settlers in North America. The expanding flower, stem, calyx, and petals resembled the neck, head, and bill of a crane. Cranberries are a unique fruit. They grow and survive under a very special combination of factors: they require an acid peat soil, an adequate fresh water supply, sand and a growing season that stretches from April to November, including a dormancy period in the winter months, necessary to mature fruiting buds. Contrary to popular belief, cranberries do not grow in water. Instead, they grow on vines in impermeable beds layered with sand, peat, gravel and clay.
What do you think about when the month of November rolls around? Does this month signify the beginning of the up-coming holidays? Perhaps you are excited in hopes for a plentiful snowy ski season. For many, Thanksgiving represents abundance and often overabundance, family and friends bringing their favorite dish, relishes and pies. It is a wonderful time of year; the weather has cooled and people are coming together. We can demonstrate the Thanksgiving spirit all year long by our actions, honoring our body, mind and spirit. Feeding our body wholesome nourishing food honors our personal temple. Taking a class or learning a new hobby stretches the mind. We honor our spirit by integral living and giving to others. My mother years ago gave me a little magnet that reads, “Your life is a gift from God and what you do with it is your gift to God.” Take from the saying what you will, I think it is very powerful. Thank you Mom. In this issue you will find: wonderful healthy recipes, alternative and fun ways to keep your body fit, articles that will stretch the way you think about yourself and the world around you, and ways to be still in a frantic world. Best wishes to you and your family this Thanksgiving season from all of us at Healthy Beginnings Magazine.
Cranberries are packed with nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They contain vitamin C, dietary fiber and other micronutrients.

Create a New Gift Giving Groove Gifts that Inspire, and Promote Health and Wellness Written by Allison Prater
"HELPED are those who receive only to give; always in their house will be the circular energy of generosity; and in their hearts a beginning of a new age on Earth: when no keys will be needed to unlock the heart and no locks will be needed on the doors." -from "The Gospel according to Shug" from Alice Walker's, "The Temple of My Familiar"

s the Holiday season approaches, and we begin to think about how we can possibly budget enough to get the perfect gift for everyone on our list, let us be inspired to creative new solutions, instead of spending the season consumed by stress. As we are bombarded with advertising encouraging us to buy this cutting edge gadget, or that hot new toy, or this piece of designer jewelry, let us have the presence of mind to be discerning. Let us contemplate the lasting impact that our gifts may have, not only on the receiver, but also on our communities, and even the planet as a whole. Let us give gifts that inspire wellness in others. Let us be inspired to give gifts that keep giving.
for the giver's feelings. Thankfully there are plenty of unique gifts that can offer lasting benefits to the receiver. You can give the gift of fitness with class passes or memberships to a local yoga studio or gym. Perhaps the person you have in mind wants to do something new and adventurous, like take a dance class. The new year is a great time to reinvigorate one's fitness goal's, and this could be the perfect gift to help motivate them. You can also purchase sessions with a personal trainer, if your recipient prefers one-on-one guidance. You can give the gift of relaxation by presenting your loved one with a gift certificate to a local spa. There are a host of spa packages to choose from that can be custom tailored to suit the needs of the recipient. If you know somebody that has been stressed out lately, and in
need of a vacation, this is a great way to help them unwind. You can give the gift of education by introducing your loved one to a new class, book, or workshop that relates to something in their life they would like to change or know more about. For example, perhaps they'd like to make changes in their diet. A cooking class, or a few sessions with a nutritional coach could provide them with some powerful tools to help them make those changes. Perhaps they are searching for a new purpose in life. A couple of sessions with a life coach would help them to discover a new passion.

BRAINHEALTH
Lubricate Your
Control Center Written by Marie Harger
Dehydration may occur from both environmental and psychological stress. Some symptoms of dehydration are: dry or sticky mouth, low or no urine output (concentrated urine appears dark yellow), not producing tears, sunken eyes, or mental confusion. Processed foods such as caffeinated drinks and alcohol may also cause dehydration. The body’s water needs are not ideally fulfilled by other liquids, because they are processed as food. Foods like fruits and vegetables naturally contain water and help to lubricate the system especially the intestines. Drink water twenty minutes before or one hour after meals because drinking water with food may dilute your digestive juices.
A
bout 70 percent of the human body is water and water is a superb conductor of electrical energy. The brain and nervous system electrical and chemical actions are dependent on the conductivity of electrical currents, which are facilitated by water. Brain tissue is 85% water, from which we can then conclude that, for health and optimum functioning, water is a must. Water is one of the most important nutrients for the body. Replenishing the body with water should be done in frequent small amounts and at room temperature to be best absorbed. Water activates the brain by creating an efficient electrical and chemical action between the brain and the nervous system, as well as allowing for effective storage and retrieval of information. It is essential for lymphatic function and the removal of wastes in the body. For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

When the body receives adequate water, academic skills and behaviors are improved. Stress causes dehydration, making water intake before a test vital. Concentration abilities are improved because water alleviates mental fatigue. There is a heightened ability to move and participate in activities. Water alleviates difficulties related to neurological switching, thus improving mental and physical coordination. Stress release, better communication, and social skills can also be linked to proper water intake. Overall, drinking water makes you more alert and refreshed. You can determine your water needs based on body weight with one ounce of water per day for every three pounds. Consider the amount of physical and psychological stress and increase the intake accordingly. References: 1. Dennison, Paul (Ph.D); Dennison Gail, Brain Gym – Teacher’s Edition. Kaleigh Richards A Natural Way To A Healthy Body
K
aleigh Richards never struggled with direction. Her career path began at the age of nine, giving free massages to her babysitter, family and friends. She attended 2200 hours of massage school at the prestigious International Academy of Massage in her hometown of Ottawa Ontario, Canada. Canada’s strict certification policy sets Richards apart from the rest of the therapists in Reno. A massage certification in Canada requires over four times the amount of schooling than in the state of Nevada. In 2000, Richards moved with her husband from Ontario, Canada to Reno and opened a very successful practice in 2001. Her business, Sierra Body Contouring, offers Swedish and deep-tissue massage and boasts the only Lypossage machine in Northern Nevada. Richards’ work includes everything from stress-relief to injuries. She has worked on patients with diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, as well with as clients looking for stress relief. The first time she witnessed the effectiveness of massage in healing injuries was when she had a patient who could not lift her arm more than three inches off the hip. “After one session a week for three months, she could lift her arm all the way above her head,” said Richards. “It was really rewarding.” Recently, Sierra Body Contouring acquired Northern Nevada’s only Lypossage machine for treatment of the lymphatic system. Hands on Lypossage can be aggressive and this machine is a gentle alternative with consistent results. “The lymphatic system is like a highway, you have to keep it running smoothly,” said Richards. The rapid vibrations of the lypossage machine loosen the toxins built up inside of the lymph nodes and essentially break up the ‘traffic’ in the system. The lymphatic system runs hand-in-hand with the circulatory system and when the blood brings new nutrients to the cells there is a natural exchange that takes place. The cells take the nutrients from the circulatory system and the circulatory system take the waste. The waste is then given to the lymphatic system for elimination. Lypossage stimulates the lymphatic system to eliminate toxins, which are part of what attributes to the appearance of cellulite. The average person who receives this November 2009
treatment can lose between 4 and 9 inches. Surgeries for fat removal can be harsh with uneven results and bruising. Lypossage is a healthier approach to dealing with cellulite. Sierra Body Contouring also offers two non-invasive, nonsurgical facelifts designed to smooth and refine the skin. The Microcurrent Facelift stimulates facial muscles, improving muscle tone and definition. It can be used as a targeted spot treatment as well. The Bellanina Facelift massage is a treatment that cleanses and moisturizes the skin, firms and tones while reducing wrinkles. Results for both techniques are completely natural and can last up to two weeks. Even therapists need a remedy from time to time. “Horses are my therapy,” said Richards. “I’ve owned seven horses over the last 30 years,” she said. “I enjoy all types of riding, but jumping is my passion.” As continued therapy, and service to the equine community, she is the president of the Sierra Nevada Horse Show Association. Richards’ family also keeps her cheery. Richards has been married twelve years and has two children, Cole, 7, and Eden, 2. Sierra Body Contouring offers very competitive rates, including a first-time 75% discount on Lypossage and the Microcurrent facelift . Call (775) 233-0346 for an appointment, or check out www.sierrabodycontouring.org. EMOTIONALWELLBEING Jungian Dreamwork Series:
The Lion and the Lamb Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD
T
his article examines the concept of evil from a psychological perspective. Its relevance lies in the fact that our beliefs and attitudes regarding the nature of evil have far-reaching effects for the way we live and understand our life. For example, reconciling the reality of love, beauty, creativity, and healing in the world with the coexistence of hate, violence, and cruelty is a dilemma that has led many people to a place of spiritual cynicism and resignation. We all have our own way of defining evil, and the behaviors or events that one person, country, or religion might call evil, another might call good. This may lead one to believe that the categories of good and evil are always relative judgments without objective basis. However, this perspective ignores the fact that although the attribution of evil may be applied differently by different people, some uses of the term may be more valid than others. As Jungian author Murray Stein writes, “Just because the categories of good and evil are the product and tool of consciousness does not mean that they are arbitrary and can be assigned to actions, persons, or parts of persons [that is, parts of the personality] without heavy consequence. Ego discrimination is an essential aspect of adaptation and consequently is vital to survival itself. Ego consciousness must take responsibility for assigning such categories of judgment as good and evil accurately or they will lose their adaptive function. If the ego discriminates incorrectly for very long, reality will exact a high price.”

In his study of the psyche Carl Jung documented the innate urge of the personality to manifest its deepest potential. Just as an acorn is “hard-wired” to become an oak tree, so each personality is driven from within to give fullest expression to its unique talents and creative gifts. Jung called this instinctual drive towards wholeness and fulfillment of the personality individuation. Through the process of individuation people are challenged to grow in consciousness and to actualize the creative potential of the mature personality. Because our potential is so vast, individuation is not a process that is ever completed in life. The important matter is not where we are in our individuation journey, but our attitude towards this process. Is the ego facilitating the unfolding of the larger personality or is it pursuing its own, narrow agenda instead? From the perspective of Jungian psychology, evil could be defined as a force, which opposes or parasitizes the natural development and maturation of the personality, including the development of the spirit/soul and of consciousness. Although every religion defines evil in it’s own way (some even denying its existence), each communicates certain beliefs about the nature and proper aspirations of human beings in life. Certainly, consciousness is one of the defining characteristics of being human, and without it there would be no discrimination of thoughts and behaviors into the categories of good and evil.

Oxygen Therapy and Surgery Written by Dr. David Rovetti
W
hat happens when you have rotator cuff shoulder surgery and you cannot proceed with your planned activities and adventures such as golf, swimming, tennis, rafting and waterskiing. A torn supraspinatus tendon simply will not grow back to the insertion on the humerus by itself so the recovery period is very important. And, it can be quite painful and can hurt more each day without proper rest. Calendaring out the season’s activities, if you could heal a bit quicker than what was presented as the “average” healing time for arthroscopic* surgery, you just might be able to catch the tail end of your plans.
Plans for your healing regime can include: • Chiropractic therapy, which is designed to expedite healing time • Protylitic enzymes would help dissolve the tissue debris from the surgery and help clear it out of the body.
ercise can stress an already stressed body; a small amount (15 minutes, three times per week) would stimulate and increase circulation. Another effective treatment that gives quick-recovery benefits is the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). It is a chamber that provides 1.5 atmospheres of pressure and 95% pure oxygen. HBOT has been shown to increase stem cells in the body, hyperoxygenates the red blood cells, plasma and all fluids of the body, provides rapid growth of new capillaries, significantly reduces inflammation, and kills bacteria. Tissues need oxygen to heal. HBOT is FDA approved for slow (i.e. diabetic) wound healing. Spending one hour in the chamber four hours before the surgery, and three one-hour daily sessions after the surgery per week is ideal. This is the HBOT protocol many plastic surgeons practice.
• Spinal adjustments to keep the spine stress-free and the spinal nerves working correctly.
This treatment facilitates a strong, moving fully, and almost pain-free shoulder. This is a quick healing recommendation for anyone concerned about surgical complications and/or who wants to get back to an active life quickly after surgery.
• Omega-3 fish oil to help the cell membranes be more permeable, which also helps get more healing nutrition inside the cell.
* Arthroscopic is defined as examination of the interior of a joint, such as the knee, using a type of endoscope that is inserted into the joint through a small incision.
• Fairly aggressive daily doses of Multi-Vitamins and trace minerals to make sure the body is getting all the healing building blocks.
* Orthroscopic is defined as an instrument for examining the internal structures of the eye through a layer of water that neutralizes the refraction of the cornea.
• A fresh/raw fruit and vegetable diet.

Interviewed by Marie Harger
s The University of Nevada’s Head Baseball coach for over 20 years, Coach Powers has seen many athletes come through his door. Although the opportunities for athletes today have greatly changed from twenty years ago, the foundations remain the same. Understanding and following through with basic fundamentals will ensure success of the athlete.

Coach Powers acknowledges that the opportunities to participate in a sport today have increased significantly from twenty years ago, as well as the actual playing time and frequency. In the past kids would play one sport during a season with practices and one game per week. Today, kids play one sport 12 months out of the year, up to 3 and 4 times a week. He states there is something positive to be said about playing more than one sport, and thinks it is unfair for parents and coaches to require kids to specialize when they are young – this includes high school. He said kids used to get a break, when one sport

season ended kids would get to play a different sport thus resting the muscles most used from the previous sport.
Healthy Chocolate? Not all chocolate is created equal.
For Coach Powers the success of an athlete is simple and it all boils down to three main components. 1) Get enough rest/sleep, 2) Eat right/have proper nutrition and 3) stay hydrated/drink enough fluids. The athlete must have a strong commitment and be willing to do what is necessary, as well as following these three essential health components. He says it is really very basic, but you would not believe the number of kids and parents who just do not know this, or do not take the time to apply it.
Our healthy chocolate can:
• Improve Circulation • Reduce Blood Pressure • Enhance Cell Signaling • Decrease Platelet Clumping • Improve Cholesterol Levels • Help Weight Control & More Some things are not too good to be true. Ask how you can get paid to eat chocolate.
Discover healthy chocolate today!
Eating right, getting enough sleep and staying hydrated are key in preventing injuries, supporting muscle development, and helping proper body functioning. Coach Powers says there are more injuries today than ever before due to the shortfall of one or more of these components. Some kids are coming to College as athletes with injuries and often the solution is surgery. If that is the case, there is no guarantee the athlete will be able to continue, and then his or her sports career may be over. Of course, a full recovery is always desired, which means the three components must be followed in order to heal. It is crucial for parents to help their athlete evolve and stay healthy! Be willing to provide guidelines for your children. It is the parent’s responsibility to enforce for the child a healthy diet, proper hydration and getting enough rest/sleep. If you think your child has a chance to play a sport in college, follow these three essential health components and encourage a strong commitment to them. Sports at the college level requires TOTAL COMMITMENT, which includes being disciplined, managing your time, working within the team framework, and consistently integrating these three health components to ones lifestyle.

Flu Shots?
What's the Data? Written by Michael Gerber MD, HMD
D
oes statistical analysis of flu vaccinations prove that they are safe and effective?
First of all flu vaccinations are strains of flu that researchers find in Asia the year before our flu season. Last year two of the three strains cultured never found their way to North America. The flu strains are cultivated in chick embryos for several weeks and are then deactivated by formaldehyde, embalming fluid and a known carcinogen, and then preserved with Thimerosal, which is 49 percent mercury by weight. According to the CDC (Center for Disease and Control) some contain as much as 25 mcg of mercury per dose, which is 250 times the Environmental Protection Agency’s safety limit for mercury. Fetuses and children are at highest risk of damage from this neurotoxin as their brains are still developing. Yet the CDC still recommends that children over 6 months of age and pregnant women receive the flu vaccine each year.

In addition to mercury, the vaccines contain other toxic and hazardous ingredients such as aluminum, (a neurotoxin related to Alzheimer’s disease), detergent, carbolic acid, ethylene glycol (antifreeze) disinfectants and spermicides. Reactions to flu vaccine include life-threatening allergies to various ingredients, Guillain-Barre syndrome (a severe paralytic disease that is fatal in about 1 out of 20 cases), encephalitis (brain inflammation), neurological disorders and thrombocytopenia (low platelets which can inhibit clotting). A quote from the package insert of the flu vaccine FLULAVAL for the 2009-2010 season states that it is a flu vaccine for adults 18 years of age and older and that there have been no controlled trials demonstrating a decrease in influenza disease after vaccination with FLULAVAL. A study published in the October 2008 issue of the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine found that vaccinating young children against the flu had no impact on flu-related hospitalizations or doctor visits during two recent flu seasons. The researchers concluded that "significant influenza vaccine effectiveness could not be demonstrated for any season, age, or setting" examined. A 2008 study published in the Lancet found that influenza vaccination was NOT associated with a reduced risk of pneumonia in older people. This supports an earlier study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Research published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine also confirms that there has been no decrease in deaths from influenza and pneumonia in the elderly, despite the fact that vaccination coverage among the elderly has increased from 15 percent in 1980 to 65 percent today. In 2007, researchers with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases and the National Institutes of Health published this conclusion in the Lancet Infectious Diseases: “We conclude that frailty selection bias and use of non-specific endpoints such as all-cause mortality, have led cohort studies to greatly exaggerate vaccine benefits.” A large-scale, systematic review of 51 studies, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2006, found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo in children. The studies involved 260,000 children, age 6 to 23 months. MEDITATION&REFLECTION
Stillness
Written by Diane Hageman
P
eace of mind is something we all strive for and yet it often seems to elude us. How does one find peace within ourselves living in a busy and seemingly chaotic world? The answer is stillness. When we align ourselves with our inner most stillness, we can move beyond the chaos into a place of peace and harmony. Stillness can be a gateway to bring balance to our mind, body and spirit. How can stillness be defined and how can it bring peace and balance to our lives? Stillness is being. Stillness is the gap. It is the gap between thoughts, emotions and noise. From that gap we can discover our true essence. This beautiful place of stillness is in each one of us, though quite often we ignore it or avoid it. We ignore or avoid it for a myriad of reasons—everything from not having time, to not knowing how to connect with this part of ourselves. If you take the time and get to know this inner world you will have given yourself a great gift. Opportuni-

ties arise for gaining greater clarity in your life about whatever it is that concerns you in the moment—to release the fears, and to begin to co-create from a positive space of all possibilities. It is not difficult to connect to the stillness; just a little practice is required. There are many different ways to do this, all of them good. Observing nature is a wonderful place to start. Eckert Tolle reminds us “Look at a tree, a flower, a plant. Let your awareness rest upon it. How still they are, how deeply rooted in Being. Allow nature to teach you stillness. When you look at a tree and perceive its stillness, you become still yourself. You connect with it at a very deep level. You will then feel oneness with whatever you perceive through stillness. Feeling the oneness of you with all things is true love! Meditation is another way of experiencing stillness. As you enter the silence of meditation, you open the pathway to stillness. It is a place of being fully present in the moment of stillness. You move beyond the constant mind chatter, thoughts and emotions. It is through silence that stillness comes and through the stillness comes peace. It does not take complete silence or a walk in nature to experience stillness. You can experience it any time. As Eckert Tolle says” Any disturbing noise can be as helpful as silence. Drop the inner resistance to the noise, by allowing it to be as it is, this acceptance also takes you into that realm of inner peace that is stillness. Whenever you deeply accept this moment as it is — no

matter what form it takes — you are still, you are at peace.” We are quickly approaching the holiday season, and here are a few suggestions to help experience stillness so that it may be truly a time of peace and joy. 1.Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Take time to practice meditation, and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives. 2. Each night before you go to bed, complete the following statements: I am thankful for___. Remember you are too blessed to be stressed. 3.Let stillness direct your words and actions. 4.Get outside as often as possible. Take a walk in nature and feel the stillness. 5. Do an electronic fast for a day—no radio, no TV, no computer, no ipod or mp3 player. This enables you to pay attention to the gap where stillness is found. When we find that we are able to locate ourselves in the deeper waters and less on the tumultuous surface of our being, we discover a lasting relationship with peace, and this will enable us to inspire peace beyond ourselves. THERAPYREVIEW
Sonatherapy
For Body, Mind, and Spirit Written by Dr. Thomas S. Lee, Naturopathic Physician and Homeopathic Practitioner
S
onatherapy™ is a new application of “energy medicine”or “vibrational healing” being developed at Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa in Reno, Nevada.. This is an exciting modern application of several ancient sciences of human health used to benefit the complex ailments seen today in this community. In Sonatherapy, the body is exposed to specific frequencies of sound using various means. Through water baths or electronic applicators, these energies produce beneficial effects upon human body tissue or organ systems. The sound frequencies are grouped into chords of waveforms designed by practitioners to create specific shapes and patterns. These sessions also include light therapy in specific color wavelength ranges and frequencies, as well as supportive methods such as aromatherapy and deep tissue massage. Optionally, sessions are preceded by hydrotherapy in the pristine geothermal spring water at Steamboat. A session results in a powerful reentrainment of the body’s normal balance of rhythm in the affected area. This work can bring an injured or diseased body part to a higher level of health and vitality. For those already healthy, it contributes better tone and relaxation. These effects are
Why consider Sonatherapy? reported by test subjects and observed in vital sign comparisons.
How does it work? Most ancient societies have taught that natural forces can promote health and vitality. Sunlight, air, water, and fluctuations of temperature and sound were added to nutrition and cycles of exercise and rest as the best methods of promoting health. These early medical arts were considered vitalistic. They each described health as a dynamic and interconnected balance among these same forces. Today many scientists describe health as including bioelectrical balance. They notice living things respond to certain sounds, light, and magnetic fields with either good or ill effects. Despite the many differences between us, those responses are very similar. Sonatherapy sessions bring a resonance to the targeted tissues or regions of the body. In Dr. Buchanan’s groundbreaking work, SONA, the steady growth of this field of sound therapy is chronicled and described (1). That material shows that optimal frequencies and sonic arrays have been studied by teams of dedicated researchers worldwide for several decades. Together, they have developed these for the entrainment of most known optimal functions of the body and mind.

Sonatherapy , if applied well and in a timely manner, can help overcome pain, and restore ranges of motion to hurtful joints. It can be used to safely increase one’s level of wellness and fitness as well. A session might help you turn the corner after a tough cold or flu, or it might help you sidestep an infection after being exposed to sick people. These sessions are non-invasive, so you would not need to discontinue any prescribed medication or therapy, if these were felt to be needed. The Sonatherapy waveform combinations, also termed “Wave Front BIOresonance Codes” are proven to benefit many common complaints. Dozens of case studies have been compiled and published by Steamboat’s Director of Research, Dr. Gary Robert Buchanan, in his book referenced below, SONA. Currently, the Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa in Reno is the only location in the U.S. that offers Sonatherapy and provides authorized training for facilitators. References: 1. FITNESS
Bored with your Workout? Try Belly Dancing
Written by Allison Prater
I
n recent years, middle eastern dance, commonly known as "belly dance" has been one of the fastest growing fitness trends in the US, and with good reason. There are a host of benefits that can be attained through the practice of belly dance for both women and men of all ages. Belly dance is helpful for improving balance and coordination through the use of repetitive movements, or drills. These drills will often isolate one part of the body and take it through specific movements, such as lifts, drops, circles, figure 8's and shimmies. These movements gently move a joint, such as the hip, through its full range of motion. When a joint is rotated, synovial fluid is stimulated, which lubricates it. This helps keep the joint healthy and protects it from injury. The repetition in drilling is important for many reasons. When a movement is repeated constantly, there is a neuromuscular connection made, and in time the movement becomes instinctual. Often the muscles that are being utilized are muscles that are taken for granted during our daily routine. When the muscles are activated through repetitive motion, they are then able to help support proper alignment and posture, without our needing to think about it consciously. Repetitive pelvic tucks forward, for example, strengthen the lower abdomen and help to correct low back issues, such as sway back. These movements also strengthen the pelvic floor in general. Chest lifts help to strengthen the shoulders and open the chest, very beneficial to those who spend the day hunched over a computer.

What is
L-Tryptophan Complete? Supplement review by Heather Jenson
When times got really bad, I experienced some things that turned my anxiety into full blown panic attacks.
M
y anxiety started many years ago very mildly and very seldom. At that time I would get a little dizzy and my heart would race, not really understanding what it was. When I went to the doctor(s), I informed them about what I was experiencing, so they put me on Xanax. I was taking Xanax for quite a few years, before I would go out in public and sometimes before bed. It was actually helping me a lot; I didn’t experience any major anxiety for a long time. Unfortunately, there came a time in my life that I stopped taking the Xanax and stopped caring about myself. I just gave up on everything and anything that I ever cared about.
Experiencing a panic attack for the first time was one of the scariest things I have ever experienced. You do not even feel it coming on and all of a sudden you feel like you are going to die. The dizziness, the blurred vision, the rapid heart beat and the hyperventilation were all signs that I was about ready to faint. After I started having these panic attacks, I finally made it back to the doctor. That is when they put me back on drugs. The drugs worked, but they weren’t good for me. Xanax is highly addictive, and with my addictive personality I had to choose another route. About 11 months ago, I started taking two L-Tryptophan Complete before I went to bed and weaned myself off of my prescribed meds. Immediately my mind stopped racing and I could fall asleep right away. My night terrors were limited and I could finally sleep without waking up in fear.

My anxiety was still pretty bad throughout the day, and I didn’t want to take the L-Trypto- phan Complete because I figured it would make me tired, and I wouldn’t be able to get things done. Finally, after many weeks of my heart racing and constantly coughing, I decided to try taking one L-Tryptophan Complete. About 10 minutes after taking it, my coughing was gone and my heart rate slowed down. I was slightly tired, but it was nowhere near what a drug made me feel like, and I seemed to actually focus better, since I was more relaxed. It is truly a great feeling to know that I have a solution for my anxiety when it creeps up on me. Drugs are not an option for me today. Although L-Tryptophan first became available over forty years ago, researchers now are focusing on the fact that both genetic and dietary deficiencies can block our proper metabolism of nutrients, including L-Tryptophan. Just as explorers map trails through the wilderness, medical researchers map the biochemical pathways that amino acids follow while doing their job in your body. There are many pathways in L-Tryptophan metabolism, and each one of these pathways is composed of steps.
November 2009
Each step, in turn, is controlled by a specific, cellular enzyme. These enzymes are the product of your individual genetic expression and can vary greatly from one person to another. Unlike digestive enzymes, though, you cannot take cellular enzymes in a capsule. Furthermore, cellular enzymes cannot work alone. Enzymes are as useless as a car without wheels if they lack critical coenzymes (vitamins – B6) and cofactors (minerals) that make them run. The concept is simple: to ensure that L-Tryptophan produces and sustains serotonin, our job has been to identify these coenzymes and cofactors and logically combine them in L-Tryptophan Complete. This careful combining of the right tools for the right job ensures that your cellular enzymes work, and you receive all the benefits of L-Tryptophan that Nature intended. L-Tryptophan Complete was first inspired about eight years ago by the fact that many peoples around the Earth are so poorly nourished they fail to get proper benefit from the food or supplements that they do receive. Donations of products to starving nations can be wasted for lack of a single nutrient. Even in prosperous countries, genetic deficiencies, unwise diets, and environmental factors can block the enzymes that metabolize essential nutrients. If you have ever wondered why a supplement did not work, this may be why.
The Serotonin / L-Tryptophan Link L-Tryptophan is the essential nutrient from which serotonin is made. L-Tryptophan is not a drug and works by feeding the biochemical pathways that keep you alive. In contrast to man-made chemicals, L-Tryptophan occurs naturally in your diet, and your body was born with the ability to process L-Tryptophan without side effects. Dozens of research papers emphatically prove that supplemental L-Tryptophan increases serotonin levels in the brain. Less well-known, though, is the fact that only a small percentage of ingested L-Tryptophan goes down your brain serotonin pathway. Increasing that percentage even a small amount can provide a dramatic boost to your brain serotonin levels. A simple boost in serotonin has helped many experience restful sleep and brighter, happier moods than they have enjoyed in years. (For those who are interested in digging deeper and wanting the scientific perspective of what happens inside your cells go to www. lidtke.com). In short, the proper combination of cofactors and coenzymes drives the conversion of L-Tryptophan to serotonin. Nevertheless, we have found that we can do better. Very recent research shows that curcumin, the same curcumin that reduces the risk of cancer in experimental animals, also helps slow the breakdown of serotonin into inactive metabolites. Curcumin in L-Tryptophan Complete, then, helps to maintain and protect the serotonin generated by all the other ingredients.
Whether you are worn out by common stresses of this world, or whether you suffer from an unrecognized imbalance, we believe L-Tryptophan Complete is the best, and most natural choice for raising your serotonin levels. Feel better, sleep better. Be at peace in body, mind and spirit. Benefits: Improves sleep, Soothes nervous irritability, improves mood, Helps relieve muscle pain, Reduces the craving for carbohydrates, Helps curb aggressive or violent behavior, Reduces premenstrual symptoms L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a cornerstone of normal mood, normal sleep patterns, reduced anxiety, and the alleviation of binge cravings. Because L-Tryptophan is essential, no other amino acid, vitamin, mineral, herb or man-made chemical can take the place of L-Tryptophan. L-Tryptophan is routinely added to baby food and hospital IV solutions, where it is essential for growth and life. Furthermore, plasma amino-acid profiles of hundreds of patients demonstrate that L-Tryptophan is the amino acid most lacking in our diet. ot Springs are a source of flowing water that has been heated through contact with hot or molten rock and has emerged to the Earth’s surface. This can happen when groundwater circulates unusually deep within the Earth, and then rises, rapidly. There are countless hot springs scattered throughout Nevada and California (and there are bound to be a few undiscovered gems still out there). Four of them in the general vicinity of Reno have been safely harnessed as businesses, offering rest and relaxation. Steamboat Hot Springs is the closest hot springs to the Reno area. Located just off of Highway 395, past the Summit Mall, the healing waters of Steamboat Villa Hot Springs have been around since the 1800’s, and the spa has been offering numerous services since 1996. Because hot springs rely on geothermal hotspots, they tend to be found in groups. One such pocket of activity can be found a few miles outside of Bridgeport, CA. Travertine Hot Springs boasts a wonderful panoramic view of the Sierra mountains and is located just over a half-mile from town. Turn left on to Jack Sawyer Road, south of Bridgeport, and follow it for about a mile. Limited camping is available.
Buckeye hot springs is to the North of Bridgeport in the Toiyabe National Forest. The remote location hides a brook that cascades into a cave. Water at the source is too hot to bathe, but the pool created by the creek averages a comfortable 103 degrees. Turn off of route 395, onto Twin Lakes Road, North of Bridgeport. Travel seven miles, then turn right past Doc and Al’s resort. Cross the bridge over the creek and continue up the gravel road to the parking area. The springs are a quick hike from the parking lot. Camping is also available at Buckeye Campground. Hot Springs can also be found on or near the Black Rock Playa, about 30 miles outside of Gerlach, NV, and 120 miles outside of Reno. The area houses an abundance of springs, most of which are quite accessible by vehicles and are open for camping. Traigo, Double, and Soldier Meadows hot springs offer good soaking opportunities (Double hot springs is too hot to enter, but a bathing area has been set aside using water from the pool.) Fly Geyser is a constant spout of artesian hot water that has created a wonderful tower of mineral deposits. Unfortunately the geyser is on private land and can only be viewed with permission, or on a tour. However the ease of travel, or lack thereof makes visiting these springs a commitment...or an adventure, depending on your point of view.

Tr e a t i n g Bladder Symptoms Written by Jane O’Brien, MSPT
T
he term pelvic floor refers to the sling of muscles, ligaments, and fascia that span from the front of the pelvis at the pubic bone to the posterior pelvis at the tailbone. The purpose of this musculature is to support the pelvic organs (uterus, colon, and bladder), allow for control of the outlets (urethra and rectum) and provide tone for sensation for the sexual functions. It is important for this area to have proper muscle tone. Excess tone of the muscles can cause difficulty sitting, pain during intercourse, hip and low back pain or retention. Diminished tone may lead to incontinence, organ prolapse and possibly decreased sexual response. Commonly, people associate pelvic floor dysfunction with incontinence, a condition where you are unable to control the evacuation of the bladder and bowels. However, there are a myriad of diagnoses that fall under this category such as overactive bladder, pelvic pain, prolapsed uterus, painful periods (dysmenorrhea), interstitial cystitis, coccyx pain, painful intercourse, and many others. Symptoms may limit a man or woman’s ability to perform daily activities, cause a change in exercise habits and create embarrassment. Many physical therapists have specialized training that can benefit men and women with issues of the pelvic floor. These therapists utilize every aspect of their physical therapy training to evaluate patients and to provide intervention to overcome these dysfunctions. Treatments may consist of a combination of many techniques. Exercises, such as “Kegels,” strengthen the pelvic floor and greatly enhance muscle function when performed properly. Relaxation techniques may be utilized to assist with decreasing tone and pain. Manual techniques, such as Myofascial Release and soft tissue massage are often used to relieve tension. Biofeedback is used to increase awareness of proper muscle recruitment or to quiet overactive muscles. Electrical stimulation may be used to recruit and train pelvic floor musculature or to relieve pain. Joint mobilizations are often utilized to restore pelvic alignment and motion. In addition, patient education can assist with prevention of dysfunction.
unsuccessful. Physical Therapy can provide tremendous relief for Healthcare consumers who want to take control of their symptoms and overcome them without the use of long-term drugs or surgeries. When choosing a physical therapist for treatment of a pelvic floor dysfunction, it is important to inquire of their training, certifications, experience and outcomes to ascertain if they are qualified to treat this area. The Section on Women’s Health of the American Physical Therapy Association offers training and mentoring leading to a certificate program called the Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Physical Therapy (CAPP). Approximately 150 PT’s have received the CAPP to date. To find a Physical Therapist who is trained to work with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, one can contact the Section on Women’s Health of the American Physical Therapy Association. The web site is www.womenshealthapta.org. BOOKREVIEW
H ar m onic W ealth The Secret of Attracting the Life You Want By James Arthur Ray
A book review Written by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
J
ames Arthur Ray is one of the success experts featured in the movie The Secret. He gives seminars and workshops across the country, explaining how to live the life you want by aligning your thoughts, feelings and actions in a congruent way. He makes a firm distinction between knowing what to do and actually doing it because he knows that success depends on creative action (doing) as well as creative thought (knowing). That might seem obvious, but many people who viewed The Secret got the impression that all they had to do was think of what they wanted in a positive way, and it would happen. The author explains that the mental work of a
disciplined mind is very important, but it isn’t everything.
- Your willpower will never be stronger than the beliefs in your subconscious mind.
Harmonic Wealth is not just about material prosperity. It is about abundance in all areas of your life: financial, relational, mental, physical and spiritual. He explains why he believes “balance” isn’t what one should aim for and instead, he looks at harmony as the goal, as in a musical performance in which different instruments blend to create a tapestry of sound.
- Be the real you. Whatever is suppressed will be expressed, in later days, in uglier ways.
He offers some challenging statements at the beginning of the book, then goes on to explain how and why he has come to these beliefs. For instance: - Your current bank account isn’t who you are, it’s who you were. - When you pursue greatness, don’t expect others to support you. You’ll represent the courage, strength and vision they don’t yet have.

- If you don’t love yourself, you’ll never attract a soul mate who truly loves you – not ever. When you think of yourself as unlovable in any way, you’re actually in love with that unlovable version of yourself, and your relationships can only reflect that. - C students own the businesses that A and B students work for. The author then goes on to show you how to assess your spiritual wealth, as well as your physical, mental, relational and financial wealth. You get to see where you stand regarding the areas that need the most work. He explains why having that information is important to your overall growth, as well as knowing what these assessments tell you about yourself, your priorities and your values.
November 2009
The author explains the science behind his statement, “We are energy, and we are light.” Harold Saxon Burr, a physiologist from Yale, proved that every living entity is a transmitter and receiver of photons of light. He found that the level of consciousness of the entity determines the level of transmission and reception. The greater one’s level of consciousness, the greater the transmission and reception. When you grow, your impact expands, individually and globally. Studies at the HeartMath Institute have found that people who consistently experience negative emotions such as anger, fear, worry, frustration and self-pity – are altering their DNA, actually making it tighten up. When this happens, potential dies. When people experience positive emotions such as love, gratitude, joy, fulfillment and empowerment, the DNA seems to loosen up and unwind. Their dormant potential awakens. The implications of positive or negative thoughts are enormous when we realize that the vibrational frequency of every thought creates a biochemical change in your body for good or ill, and actually affects your DNA. This book offers access to abundance in all areas of life through practices that are both fun and profound. It gives us an understanding of the difference that a disciplined mind can make, both personally and in the world. If you have trouble understanding the Law of Attraction, this book supplies the missing keys. It encourages you to get real and get creative about how to achieve your goals, and then walks you step by step through the blueprint for their attainment. here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache. Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

NATURALSOLUTIONS heating bills are going up, there are gifts to buy and daylight hours are getting shorter, leaving us with less time and more to do. The pressure is on. Winter is beginning to embark on us. At this time the Earth is dormant and hibernates. The trees lost their leaves, the grass has died and the birds have flown south. Nature slows down, and although our innate rhythms emulate the earths, we speed up due to the season’s “to do” list, and the results are stress, anxiety and tension. A common coping mechanism to deal with anxiety is turning to medications such as Xanax, Valium and other over-the-counter and prescription drugs for relief. However, there are many natural solutions for relieving and/or preventing anxiety.
Natural Solutions: • Exercise. Tai Chi, yoga, cycling or going for a walk or run increases blood flow and endorphins in the body relieving stress and tension. • Get enough sleep and go to bed at the same time every night. • Change your eating habits. Drink more water and avoid alcohol, caffeine, sugar and nicotine. • Take supplements that can help your body combat anxiety such as Kava Root, Valerian Root, American Ginseng, Passionflower, or brew up a cup of Chamomile tea. • Manage your stressors. Figure out which ones you can do something about and the ones that are out of your control. • Take a moment. Do some deep breathing or meditation to increase the oxygen and blood flow in your body.
Are Your “To Dos” Too Much To Do? • Natural Solutions for Anxiety Written by Heather Lara

ou were late to work this morning, the house is a mess and the credit card bill just came in the mail. Your heart starts racing. You're short of breath, your hands are clammy and you have the cold sweats. What you are feeling may be anxiety. Did you know that more than 40 million people in the United States face this condition daily? To top it all off, the holidays are coming and it is that time of year when people feel even more hurried, and stressed. The

Try to remain calm. Staying calm enables you to cope and have the ability to think clearly.
Other ways of relieving anxiety include:
Meditation, massage, relaxation and scent therapy (such as Cederwood, Frankincense, Jasmine, Lavender, Rose and Sandalwood), having a positive attitude, managing your time with equal amounts of work, play and rest. Get to know yourself and find a balance to your life. Experiences shape who we are and how we handle situations and it is important to know how to cope when confronted with the “to dos” of life. Although anxiety and stress may be present in your life, it does not mean that anxiety has to control you. References: 1.The Burton Goldberg Group. Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide. The Itch That Won’t Go Away Written by Jennifer Gray, Pharmacist

czema comes in many shapes and sizes; but one thing is constant, the ITCH. It is always there taunting its victims, urging them to abandon all control and scratch. “It feels so good to scratch that I keep on doing it even though I know it will hurt more when I stop,” says one teenage sufferer. What can be done about this increasingly common skin affliction? First of all, education and understanding the reasons for the disease go a long way to treating it. Environment, diet and heredity all contribute to the development of eczema. It is estimated that 15 million people in the United States currently suffer from some form of this disease. The National Institutes of Health estimate that 10 to 20 percent of all infants will suffer from eczema at one time or another until age five. Between the ages of five and fifteen there is a significant improvement in skin health. Eczema covers a wide range of symptoms and characteristics. In children, the most common form is atopic eczema. Like most eczema, the itch is the first symptom. Once the child begins to scratch, a rash develops and worsens as the scratching continues. Often an infection settles into the rash from the germs and irritants hiding under the fingernails. Common sites for childhood eczema are cheeks, forehead, scalp, in-
ner arms, back of knees, and trunk. No skin area is immune to the rash, though. Treating eczema in children is often difficult and frustrating. Steroidal creams, antihistamines, and petroleum products are frequently prescribed to stop the itch and trap in skin moisture. Natural skin care products, like Nature’s Baby Face and Body Moisturizer, contain emollients aloe and Shea butter which sooth and moisturize the skin. While it cannot cure eczema, a regimen of moisturizing with products such as these can lessen the itching by increasing the moisture and can make the skin look and feel better. Adults may first notice skin, especially on exposed skin like the hands or feet, becoming dry and flaky with red patches. Eventually the patches begin to itch and burn. Sometimes the eczema is more of a red bump that may be filled with clear fluid. Scratching releases the fluid making the rash appear wet. Scratching, as in the case of childhood atopic eczema, leads to more irritation and itching, and the cycle goes on and on. Malcolm’s Miracle Hand and Body Treatment uses the natural healing powers of hemp seed oil to increase skin’s moisture and repair the affected patch.

hole Body Vibration Therapy may sound mysterious, but in fact, it has been around for nearly fifty years. The idea came from observing human body movement under the influence of earth’s gravitational force. The movement of our internal organs is constantly influenced by gravity,
In 1996 the first whole body vibration device was patented. Today, a whole body vibration device creates a vertical vibration from a base that the user stands on. The TurboSonic uses quiet sound (sonic) vibration, which emanates up through the body, stimulating the muscle fibers,
which works in a vertical direction. When we move or exercise, vertical vibrations cause the body organs and muscles to contract and relax repeatedly. This type of vertical movement stimulates the growth plates, improves circulation, energizes the lymphatic system and enhances muscle strength (as a result of the contract/relax response). In the 1960’s, the Russians were among the first to explore how vibration training could be useful for athletes and astronauts in their space program (vibration training was shown to slow muscle atrophy in space).
three times the strength of gravity. Flexibility is increased and recovery time for muscle repair is considerably shortened, making it a great training tool for athletes as well as anyone wanting to improve their overall body tone and health. Furthermore, blood vessels are stimulated, improving circulation down to the cellular level, increasing cell oxygen levels, nutritional uptake, fluid movement and waste removal. Essentially, the body’s natural healing response is accelerated. Tendons and ligaments become better toned and cellulite disperses. Even small muscle groups such as the facial muscles are improved. here is a tale in Greek mythology that says Gaea, the goddess of earth, turned the nymph Daphne into a bay laurel to protect her from Apollo. It was Apollo who made the plant sacred, a symbol of honor, celebration and triumph. In addition to this meaning, the bay leaf has also been used for various gourmet and medicinal purposes.
• 6 ripe bananas, peeled and cut on the bias into 1/3-inch slices (about 1 quart) • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon fresh coarsely ground black pepper • Store bought chocolate cake or ice cream, for serving
During the middle ages, laurel was believed to induce labor, causing a woman to give birth. It was once used to keep moths away because of the leaves’ lauric acid content which gives it insecticidal properties. TIP: Place a few bay leaves in the cabinet where you keep flour and other grains to repel bugs.

Bored with your Workout? Try Belly Dancing?
Exploring Spirituality Meditation Groups Metaphysical Classes Book Studies & Discussions
Continued from page 19
Belly dance works with the natural structure of the body. The basic stance in belly dance is very similar to Mountain Pose in Yoga, the major difference is that the knees are much softer, to allow for the body to move smoothly. The feet are turned forward under the hips, and the joints are stacked, with great care being given to spinal alignment. The spinal column contains more bones and ligaments then any other part of the body. Belly dance movements such as undulations, really focus on careful articulation of the spine. Belly dance also strengthens many deep internal muscles in both the front and back of the body that can contribute to life-long spinal strength and flexibility. Because belly dance is done from a standing position it is considered a weight bearing exercise. This is especially important for women and can increase bone density and possibly prevent Osteoporosis. The spiraling, circular, and figure 8 motions in belly dance also improve circulation to all the organs in the pelvis and abdomen. Increasing and circulating blood flow to the reproductive organs can be helpful to some women who experience painful menstrual cramping and other difficulties. Midwives Ina May Gaskin, and Aviva Jill Romm both recommend belly dance as an excellent form of pre, pari, and post-natal fitness. "Belly Dancing, originally developed as a form of pelvic toning for pregnant women, is an excellent way to exercise prenatally," says Romm in "The Natural Pregnancy Book."
Belly dance is also a very healing and joyful way to lose weight. The increased circulation in the abdomen also helps to improve digestion. Most importantly, belly dance celebrates each individual's body in whatever state it currently is in. Many of the movements embody a sense of grace, but also one of strength and confidence. The dancer moves with an open heart, the head held high. As one begins to celebrate and love one's body, the body immediately begins to reflect the love and beauty expressed in the dance. It is a great way to reduce stress, and make wonderful new friends along the way. Belly dance classes also accommodate dancers of all levels and abilities. Just like a yoga class, there are beginner, intermediate and advanced forms of many movements. The dance student has a lot of room to focus internally and discover new muscles, movements and possibilities within ones own body. Belly dance is also an excellent way to cross train and complement many other forms of dance. Please consult a care provider you trust if you are pregnant, recovering from injury or taking medication before starting your belly dance practice. References: 1. www.worldbellydance.com 2. There are plenty of healthy holiday treats that have benefits to the body, while satisfying the senses. Healthy dark chocolates, are full of anti-oxidants, which have been shown to support cardiovascular health. Herbal teas are a great way to help your loved ones stay warm this winter. There are plenty of good blends to address a multitude of health related needs, plus many that include favorite holiday flavors such as peppermint or ginger. Organic bath and body products are a great way to help someone you love pamper themselves at home, without the risk of exposure to the dangerous ingredients that are commonly found in mainstream cosmetics. When you purchase consumable gifts that were grown organically, with high quality, fair-traded ingredients you are also giving back to a more responsible global economy by encouraging practices that support a healthier planet.
Purchasing recycled gifts, such as renewed used clothing, is another way to contribute to planetary health. When you purchase gently used items that are still in good condition, instead of something brand new, you are reducing your carbonfootprint. Less fuel and resource is used in the process of giving a recycled gift. By shopping at local establishments you are also giving back to many people in your community, making it possible for them to give more to their loved ones in turn. We often describe as evil things or processes that prey upon the “good.” From the perspective of a rabbit, the fox might be the “devil.” Burrowing insects are the devil to a tree. For human beings, diseases, psychopaths, and nations with opposing ideological viewpoints are perceived by some as carriers of evil. We use the term evil to describe not only forces that are detrimental to the physical body, but those that are detrimental to the spirit and psyche as well. We generally recognize the latter to be the more important of the two. When we hear the story of someone who sacrificed his life for the sake of others and that of his own soul, we may regret it had to be so, yet we feel he did the right thing. Certainly evil is a paradoxical entity; it can be difficult to correctly identify. For example, an egocentric person is tempted to refer to anything that thwarts his will as evil. And yet the opposition he encounters in life may be the expression of his deeper self trying to reorient him to his true path. The cancer that would take the life of a young woman may yet open her eyes and heart to a new level of reality or knowledge of herself. Depending upon the attitude taken by his victim, the taunting of the playground bully may become a psychological trauma or an opportunity for learning how to stand up to life. The sterilization procedures used in hospitals may help prevent post-operative infections, but may also hasten the development of new, more virulent forms of bacteria. Likewise, great technological advances can be helpful or harmful. The energy of nuclear fission can be harnessed to create electricity, or unharnessed to kill millions of people. The internet can be a portal of communication and knowledge, but also of pornography, cyber addictions, and identity theft. And the person who has “found God” may become an instrument of peace, love, and healing or the selfappointed apostle who turns others away from God through his/her arrogance and manipulative behaviors. It is apparent that the drama of “good” and “evil” is very much like nature itself in that nothing goes to waste. For every creature there is another that feeds upon it (even bears and lions must contend with parasites). In fact, the very diversity and beauty of the biological world would not exist were it not for the timeless dance of the predator-prey relationship. For every new invention and creative spark, a door is opened for their misuse. For every spiritual experience there exists the risk of its
November 2009
distortion and misappropriation by the ego. It seems that the dilemma of evil is part and parcel of consciousness and spiritual growth. It can be their enemy and the motivation behind their development, at the same time. Like nature herself, evil can be a trickster, taking life or provoking it to become stronger. “The lion shall lie down with the lamb.” This is a futureoriented vision, the goal and promise of a time when peace rules the world. It suggests a state in which the cunning, aggressive, and deadly forces in life find friendship and harmony with those of childlike innocence, trust, and receptivity. Projected into the future of human society, it is the idea of a utopia. Projected into life after death, it is heaven. This image is often interpreted as pointing to a time when the predator stops being a predator, evil is banished, and all creatures live together in harmony. There is another way of looking at this image, one that does not require the denial of the lion’s instinctual nature. The predator lying down with its prey can also symbolize an inner attitude in which we find peace–or make peace–with the predator-prey duality that forms the foundation of our being and of our world. Can we find a way to accept that as long as we are conscious and, therefore, able to form judgments about events, the dilemma of good and evil will always be present? This proposes the acknowledgment and acceptance of life’s fundamental nature, and the fundamental nature of the psyche. To ask that life be otherwise is like trying to have wanting to have light without shadows. Perhaps peace is not to be found in the denial or obliteration of life’s duality, but in making peace with that duality.

Meditation Written by Marie Harger

editation is about learning to quiet the mind to free yourself from preconceptions and illusions. The result is a clearer vision of the truth about yourself, your life and the world. Generally, there are three categories of meditation: concentration, mindfulness and contemplation, and all these are forms of mind training (Yoga Journal Oct. 07 by Frank Jude Boccio). Meditation is about creating an opportunity to being “with” yourself, and seeing what is, just as it is, as well as freeing yourself from conditioning and reactivity. Mindfulness is a skill that is developed through the practice of meditation. To be mindful means the mind is like a mirror that is meticulously polished. It reflects what is really there and nothing else. When you become mindful, you learn
to suspend everything you believe about yourself, others and the world. Your limits, your shortcomings, your fears, what people have told you regarding what you can and can’t do - all these are put on hold and what is left is the real you. Being contemplative and mindful in everything you do creates a deeper connection with Self. As described by Yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar (“Light on Yoga” pg 48), mind is the product of thoughts, which are difficult to restrain for they are subtle and fickle. A thought, which is well guarded by a controlled mind brings happiness.

How to start a meditation and stick with it: Choose a time of the day (often the morning is best) that is quiet, and distraction free. Do your meditation at the same time every day if possible. Be sure to be comfortable, either sitting in a chair or on the floor with meditation pillows. When you meditate, start with just 10 minutes. Have no expectation about the meditation. Have no attachments to what happens in the meditation. Do not decide what you consider to be successful. What comes up and happens, just is. It does not matter if you experience peace or irritation. The practice over time will nurture you. You will begin to notice your ability to flow with life without resistance, due to consistent practice of meditation. Make a commitment to your daily practice. If you do miss a meditation, try not to engage in any self-defeating thoughts or guilt. Simply continue on with the practice with no attention as to whether you missed a day or not.

Recycle – Doing Something Written by Ariana Purcell, 11 years old “I am only one; but I am still one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do!” Helen Keller
I
love that saying, even if you recycle and your friends don’t, you are still doing something, and the planet loves you for what you do! That’s why I am on a mission to talk to my friends to come together and recycle, save water, and save energy. If one person can make a difference, then imagine how 1,000 people can make a difference. So talk to your friends and if you don’t recycle then start!
Tips For Recycling Most of you that read my articles go to school. Here are some tips to recycle even when you are at school If you take a water bottle to school, when you are done instead of throwing it into the garbage throw it into the recycling! If you do a lot of projects that involve a lot of paper, but you don’t use a all the paper give it to your friend or friends! Use two sides of the paper, when writing! Stay Green!
Wallabies are a little smaller than their cousins the kangaroos. They were grazing all over the campground. Though it was still raining, a class of school kids had fun roasting marshmallows next to my tent. I joined several campers that had congregated in a gazebo while the rain drummed on the roof. All sorts of languages could be heard. Is it maybe that the first years of my life were impacted by war around me that I delight so much to experience peace among people? I wondered whether at some deeper level I seek this peace experience on my rides around the world. I was the first in the morning to rent a kayak they call “canoe” here. Kiddingly I suggested a “senior biker’s” discount. To my surprise the rate was dropped from $38 to $13 for me. These were tricky little boats. Short as they were, with each paddle stroke they tended to sway from one direction to the other. Being used to kayaks, I soon got my bearings as I paddled upstream on the Katherine River. This was crocodile habitat. Would I see any? There were signs posted not to enter the beach. Suddenly something huge snapped out of the water. It happened so fast and was too far away to determine what it was. Peace, joy and health, Hans

Winter Watering Trees and Shrubs
Written by Leslie Lyles, M.S.
M
ost of us like to ignore our landscapes as soon as the cold weather comes and the irrigation systems are shut down for the winter; however, during dry winters this can be a big mistake. In order for trees to survive the winter and be healthy, they need moisture. With that in mind, there is one landscape chore that needs to be done to ensure a healthy trees and shrubs - watering. Many people believe that once their trees go dormant there is no need to water any longer. This cannot be further from the truth. Applying water to your trees during the dry winter months is one of the best ways to keep your landscape trees healthy. It is particularly important to provide winter water to young landscape trees (less than five years old) as these trees do not have as extensive a root system to rely on. To understand why winter watering is so important one must understand the make-up of a tree’s root system. There are two basic types of roots on trees, structural roots and water absorbing roots. These roots have separate functions (just as your heart and lungs have separate functions). The structural roots’ primary function is for stability and anchorage of the tree, but they also serve as energy storage for the tree. These large diameter roots grow deep into the soil. The water absorbing roots are fine, small diameter roots that are found mostly in the top foot and a half of soil, where oxygen and moisture are plentiful. During dry winters, if the soil dries out too much, these fine roots desiccate (dry up) and die. In the spring, when it is time for the tree to come out of dormancy, the tree can not take up water and start producing leaves until it grows
a new water absorbing root system. To do this, the tree uses energy from the structural roots, thus depleting its stored energy and ultimately stressing the tree. So when and how should one water their trees? A good rule of thumb is to water your trees in the winter if there has been no significant precipitation (at least .5 inch) within a three to four week period. Most of a tree’s water absorbing root system is at the drip-line of the tree and beyond, so it is important to water out near the drip-line, not at the trunk (unless it is a newly planted tree whose roots have not left the root-ball). Make sure you apply enough water to soak at least eight inches deep into the soil.
This can easily be done with a hose end sprinkler or a soaker hose. If we do not receive sufficient natural precipitation in the winter months, watering your landscape trees is an important step in insuring their health. References: 1. Harris, Richard W. 1992. ust like your own skin, your pet’s skin is an organ with a very important job. It prevents dirt, bacteria, fungi, mites and chemicals from invading your pet’s body. This is why it should be protected and maintained.
Requirements for Healthy Skin
What Does Skin Do? There are three layers that make up skin. The top layer is the Epidermis. It is made up of cells that die and are continuously replaced. Dandruff is evident when the cells die too fast. Shedding can also be skin related. Hair grows from follicles in the skin. The follicles, like the skin cells, die and are replaced. Shedding can occur from genetics, temperature, or the amount of nutrition the pet receives for growth. Sebum is produced from oil glands found on hair follicles. The sebum protects the skin by waterproofing it and deterring bacteria and fungus to prevent infections and maintain a shiny coat. For the skin to function the best it can, it must receive the proper nutrition. The health of your pet’s skin and coat reflects For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

1. Fatty Acids: These must be in your pet’s diet because your pet’s body can’t produce it on its own. Linoleic acid is the essential fatty acid for dogs. Linoleic acid and arachadonic acid are for cats and dogs. Along with fatty acids, pets also need fiber and digestive enzymes. 2. Vitamins: provide your pets with the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need to lead a healthy and extended life. Vitamins A, D, & E help to nourish the skin. Invest in oils, which are essential for your pet's skin and coat. 3. Proteins: Although your pet may be given adequate protein in his or her diet, your pet may not be digesting it properly. Their skin and nails may become dry and smelly, and there may also November 2009

hy do we need a special day to be Thankful – shouldn’t we be Thankful everyday?
Thanksgiving has become one of those routine holidays; it happens every year around the same time and usually the same activities ensue. There is the typical food of Turkey, stuffing and pies. Each family repeats similar patterns of interacting (or not interacting) with family members and friends. There is often football on the television consuming and paralyzing the male species of the family and chatting mixed with cooking for the women. Not everyone’s holiday activities fall into this stereotypical image but it is certain there is a familiar path of fulfilling this tradition for all of us. These patterns and the relational dynamics they generate, often involve the past. Are we living in the past; allowing the same situation to be recreated year after year? The past, whether it includes feelings you may consider good or bad, is over. Let it go. Come into the present moment with expressions of appreciation, kindness, generosity, gratitude and Thankfulness.
Every moment provides an opportunity to make the decision to be Thankful. Bring a feeling of appreciation into each and everyday. You can begin by waking in the morning with thoughts of being Thankful. If there is someone in your family that rubs you the wrong way, focus on something about them you can be grateful for. We are fortunate today to have access to sources of inspired thought and people who encourage us to embrace the spirit of gratitude and being Thankful. For example, His Holiness the Dalai Lama shares his words, “Now, there are many, many people in the world, but relatively few with whom we interact, and even fewer who cause us problems. So, when you come across such a chance for practicing patience and tolerance, you should treat it with gratitude. It is rare. Just as having unexpectedly found a treasure in your own house, you should be happy and grateful to your enemy for providing that precious opportunity.” And Dietrich Bonhoeffer further expresses gratitude with his quote, “In ordinary life we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more

44
than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.” Instead of letting what they speak of as being mere words, begin to cultivate within you a practice of being grateful, thankful and appreciative. It takes place in the thoughts you choose to hold and the actions you choose to take. Make the decision this Thanksgiving season to be thankful everyday not just once a year. Beautiful faces are they that wear The light of a pleasant spirit there; Beautiful hands are they that do Deeds that are noble, good and true; Beautiful feet are they that go Swiftly to lighten another’s woe. (Poem from McGuffey’s second reader)

SUGAR!
Will that be One or Two Scoops? What's in your food? Written by Trudy Miller, Food Instructor, M.S., Dietetic Technician, Registered with the ADA

ugar is a carbohydrate, a nutrient found in four of the six food groups: grains and beans, fruits, vegetables, and dairy, but not fats or meat. Carbohydrates all break down into glucose in the digestive tract. Glucose is the simplest form of energy the body can use. So if you eat adequate amounts of those four food groups, you will have more than enough carbohydrates for good health. But excess glucose is easily converted to fat, and obesity can lead to problems. One of the most serious problems associated with obesity is type II diabetes, an increasingly prevalent disease in both youth and adults. This disease causes the cells’ surface to become resistant to insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas that helps glucose pass into cells to be used for energy. With low insulin sensitivity, too much glucose stays in the bloodstream and can react with protein, collagen, and elastin molecules. This process is called glycation. On the least serious end of the spectrum, glycation can cause the skin to wrinkle. More seriously, in diabetics it can damage the retina and kidneys, cause cataracts, and stiffen the blood vessels, leading to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Diabetes guidelines break down vegetables into starchy and non-starchy categories. For example, starchy includes such foods as breads, pasta, grains, beans,
lentils, peas, corn, potatoes, squash, sweet potatoes or yams. Non-starchy veggies include carrots, greens, broccoli, chilies, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, mushrooms, and broccoli. For a person with high blood glucose levels, counting carbohydrates is key. One serving of a starchy veggy equals 15 g and the non-starchies equal 5 g. Many diet plans call the latter “free” foods because they do not add significantly to blood glucose or calories. Diabetes is clinically diagnosed by a fasting blood glucose concentration of 126 mg/dL or higher. Maintaining a steady normal range of blood glucose, and blood pressure, lipid and lipoprotein profiles in the normal range can be achieved by nutrition therapy and exercise. Current nutrition guidelines for diabetics call for frequent, small meals consisting of low glycemic carbohydrates to avoid spikes in blood glucose. These are carbs such as whole fruits, whole grains, and non-starchy vegetables. And you still need to account for fat calories. These should be limited to three to five 5-g servings per day. One fat serving is one teaspoon of margarine, butter, or mayo. For most effective prevention, everyone should exercise five days a week, and if overweight, lose 5-7% of body weight, maintain cholesterol and blood pressure in the normal range, and ask your doctor to test for blood glucose levels early in life, especially if overweight or obese.

reduces inflammation. In addition, recent research has found Stevia to substantially reduce bacteria, fungi and some virus activity relating to dental plaque and cavities. With approval by the FDA in December 2008, Stevia is now being used in many beverage products in place of other faux sugars mainly for its strength of sweetness. Toby Smithson, RD, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association (as reported in New York Daily News Tuesday, April 21, 2009) says, “one tablespoon of Stevia is the equivalent of 300 tablespoons of table sugar and has been shown to be safe for human consumption.” Stevia (or any of its processed forms) is not metabolized in the body hence there is no caloric intake. Zero calories means zero calories. Stevia, even though it is derived from a natural source, has many shortcomings similar to other artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin and sucralose. Several consumers have described a bitter licorice-like aftertaste, gas and bloating and allergic reactions when using Stevia in liquid or powdered form. In South America, Stevia leaves are dried

and used directly in a beverage to gain the sweetness desired with apparently no side effects. According to Melville (1941), “the powered leaves could be added to stewed fruit and other dishes without the necessity for separating the sweet principles.” The American Dietetic Association (April 21, 2009) urges that, “using a non-caloric sweetener is not really the answer, and it is not going to solve Americans’ problem with obesity. It doesn’t teach Americans that they need to be eating healthier by eating more whole grains and fruits and vegetables.” As with all low or noncalorie sweeteners, moderation is the key. Whether you are looking for a way to cut out calories, or simply to cut back on sugar, Stevia may be the sweetener for you. However, many health and nutrition experts say the best way to satisfy your sweet tooth is to have a piece of fruit. To make peace with the existence of evil does not mean that you adopt a passive stance toward what you “believe” to be evil. But it can mean becoming more attentive and discerning as to the nature and ways of evil (and goodness). Just as biologists and ecologists study the relationships of animals and plants to each other and their environment, we are challenged to become ecologists of the soul. To do this we may need to focus a little less upon the way we think life should be, and a little more upon the way it is. We may need to focus less upon the ways that we have been hurt, cheated, tricked, and abused in life, and a little more on what these experiences can teach us about ourselves, other people, and the universe. We may need to move from the worldview of a victim to the more assertive and proactive standpoint of the warrior. Although at times we strenuously protest evil’s presence in the world and in our lives, and cry out in anger, frustration, and hurt regarding its unfairness and apparent lack of purpose, it is possible that at some time we ourselves consented, and do daily consent, to the rules of this “game” because we know that the game ennobles us, matures us, deepens us, and draws us further into the beauty and mystery of a universe we help create. And we know intuitively that it does this far better than any game without risk and death, puzzles and sorrow ever could. References: 1. Peck, M. Scott. Monthly Health Outlook:
THE SUN IN
SCORPIO Written By Robert Ayres
T
his month the Sun enters into Scorpio on October 22. As the days grow shorter and the nights grow longer, the darkness increasingly dominates our inner and outer reality. The Sun-filled days of Spring and Summer are over and the lengthening shadows of Fall and Winter are here. The Scorpion is the sign of the zodiac that represents the shadow side of life. Even though most people misunderstand Scorpio, it truly does rule sex, death, and the dark side of life. The ancient Celtic festival of Samhain is celebrated while the Sun is in Scorpio. Halloween is our modern version of this celebration.
masters. This means that the light and good that we embody is invincible and cannot be defeated. It is a strong goodness. It must be confronted by a powerful adversary to test and challenge the good until it is mastered. This is the process of growth and evolution that Scorpio rules.
From a spiritual and esoteric standpoint, the veil thins between the material and lower astral world now. This allows an overflowing into our physical reality of the negative influence of lower astral beings. It is necessary for us to recognize that life legitimately consists of light and darkness, good and evil. There has been a tendency in modern materialistic culture to naively ignore or deny the reality of good and evil. They are the two sides of the same coin. They are intimately interconnected and help define each other. You can not know good without knowing evil and you can not know evil without knowing good. Together they form the extreme polarities of life expression.
Scorpio rules that part of ourselves and the world that are still unredeemed. It represents the work that remains to be done in order to achieve perfection. It is a cosmic issue and not just a personal or human one. The psychologist Carl Jung and others increasingly addressed this challenging side of the human condition and how to work to transform it. It relates to the human soul and the depths of the subconscious mind. This is the part of us that contains all of the hidden forces and powers of the universe in microcosmic form. There are parts of ourselves that are deeply connected with the animal kingdom and the lower passions. Humanity shares these lower instincts with the animals. These desires must be transmuted into higher spiritual consciousness. This results in a liberation of these powers into enlightened expressions of spirituality.
We are spiritual beings based in freedom. For there to be freedom there must be choice. If there was only good with no evil then it would be a weak goodness. We are destined to be

evolutionary force within us, is ruled by the planet Pluto, one of the two rulers of Scorpio. This cosmic force of transformation is initially experienced as the sex drive. Over time we are to give it conscious expression for the development of higher states of consciousness. It is the motive power of self-transformation that drives us to grow and evolve.
DO YOU HAVE A HEALTHY HEART?
Mars, the primary planetary ruler of Scorpio, embodies the archetype of the warrior and the virtue of courage. The evolutionary process requires a warrior-like attitude and courage to do battle with the shadow side of ourselves. The purpose of this battle is redemption. Now is the time when the battle lines are drawn and the challenge is in our face. The process is not easy but the rewards are unbounded.
A NON-INVASIVE MEASUREMENT OF ARTERIAL HEALTH
Scorpio also rules the sexual and reproductive organs, the kundalini, and the chakras in general. The desire nature is strongly connected with our sexual life expression. This is a necessary and important part of our lives. In later years, there is a natural and gradual desire to redirect this powerful force to the higher spiritual chakras and consciousness centers. Scorpio thus also rules the development of the invisible physiology of our subtle, more spiritual bodies.
Introducing BPro Pulsewave Measuring Device
Herbs that are ruled by Scorpio that can be of benefit now are black and blue cohosh, aloe vera, ginseng, raspberry leaf, and saw palmetto berries. These herbs are excellent for balancing, healing and toning the reproductive organs. They give a vitalizing effect to the inner sexual power and the drive for growth and self-transformation. It is time to energize your inner power of soul.
Discover your cardiovascular health and detect early stages of high blood pressure. BPro gives your Central Aortic Systolic Pressure, the most accurate measure of blood pressure.
