Garlic

Dear Readers,

Written by Talia Henderson

G

arlic is the world’s second oldest herb and medicinally has been prescribed since prebiblical times! Egyptians, named “the stinking ones” for their excessive use of garlic, used it to treat headaches, bites, worms, tumors and heart problems. During World War I garlic successfully treated infected wounds and was prescribed for amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestines. It seems that the term “garlic breath” has the ability to not only keep your love from kissing you, but insects as well. Today, much research is being conducted on natural repellants such as garlic because of the relative safety in using them. Research has found that the very component allicin, which gives garlic its strong odor and keeps pests away, forms in the garlic when the cloves are crushed. The antibacterial action of garlic is equivalent to one percent of penicillin, which has the ability to destroy bacteria, fungi and yeast. Garlic is used to treat many of these ailments still today. In India garlic is currently used to wash wounds and ulcers. The next time you use garlic, enjoy the smell. Use by expressing small amounts of juice from a clove into hot water to make infusion, or into honey to make syrup. Mash the clove and apply to insect stings. Herbalists recommend eating raw garlic cloves; cooking destroys their medicinal potency.

Can you believe that it is already the last month to enjoy our local farmer’s market produce? Another sign of our times is the price of corn; these days due to bio-fuel farming you get two ears of corn for a dollar. While years ago a dollar would buy six ears of corn, that’s progress in reverse. Speaking of food, this month we have an interesting article that grades nationwide school lunch programs and how Nevada compares to other states. In our October 2006 issue we ran an article that discussed school lunch programs and how replacing genetically modified foods with wholesome foods positively impacts student behavior. Demonstrating how important wholesome nutrient rich food affects our physical and emotional health. Give us a call if you are interested in reading the October 2006 article. As we readjust to fall schedules and spending more time in doors H B has a variety of wonderful articles this month that address the art of communication; identifying verbal tools for specific situations. As always, find a plethora of articles that provide natural alternatives to mainstream medicine. Enjoy. Until our next issue... Best in Health and Happiness,

N

ow that fall is in full swing, you and your children may be getting a few more scrapes and cuts playing outdoors and while preparing our yards for winter. Even with a band-aid, a cut might still become infected, so it is always a good idea to apply some form of an anti-bacterial medication. Accordingly, plenty of pharmaceutical companies produce topical ointments and creams to prevent infection, as well as speed up healing.

Bacitracin In Your Medicine Cabinet? Written by Evan Filler Although allergic reactions and other side effects are extremely rare, they still exist. Irritation, redness and itching may occur around the application site. If any of these symptoms persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible. In some highly unusual cases, a person may have a very serious allergic reaction. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice these symptoms: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/ tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Unless you have a previous history with allergic reactions to drugs similar to Bacitracin, you should not let these side effects deter you from using it. The quick- healing and anti-bacterial benefits of Bacitracin greatly outweigh the risk of side effects. Although Bacitracin is not a completely natural product, Healthy Beginnings is dedicated to informing our readers on what is in your medicine cabinet.

Belonging to the class of drugs known as antibiotics, Bacitracin is used to prevent infections in minor skin injuries such as scrapes, cuts and small burns. It works by killing the bacteria on the skin that cause infection and is extremely safe. In 2003, the American Contact Dermatitis Society voted it Allergen of the Year.

What the heck is

‘GLUTATHIONE’? It’s the most powerful antioxidant that your body produces naturally. Yet after age 20, production declines 10%-15% per decade.

John T. Gooley first isolated Bacitracin in 1945 and named it after one of his patients, Tracey. Three years later, The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug.

Give back to your body what it naturally needs and you will feel great...

Bacitracin is most commonly found in name brand medications like Neosporin, where it acts as one of three antibiotic agents. However, it can also be purchased in pure form with each gram of ointment containing 500 units of Bacitracin in a low-melting special base made from White Petrolatum and Mineral Oil. It is also commonly used as an aftercare antibiotic on tattoos, and is preferable to Neosporin because it has fewer ingredients, which lowers chances of an allergic reaction.

Max GXL Glutathione Accelerator will: • Dramatically Raise Your Energy Level • Slow Down The Aging Process • Strengthen Your Immune System • Improve Athletic Performance, Endurance and Recovery • Neutralize and Dispose of Toxins by Rejuvenating Liver Function

Using Bacitracin is quite simple. Just make sure to clean and dry the affected area, removing any dry crust. Then apply a thin film of the medication to the injured area of skin, usually 1 to 3 times daily until your wound is healed. However, if your doctor prescribes it, use exactly as directed. Use it daily to get the most benefit. To help you remember, use it at the same time(s) each day.

Dr. Tony Jensen, D.C. Written by Talia Henderson

“Our bodies are more intelligent than any doctor.”

C

hiropractor, Dr. Tony Jensen of Jensen Chiropractic has now been serving the Reno, Nevada area for over 15 years! A Highland, Utah native, Dr. Jensen began practicing in Reno, May of 1994. He attended Parker College of Chiropractic in Dallas, Texas and has over 16 years of experience. “We can help most people who have a spine!” Yvette Fisher, Dr. Jensen’s assistant of nine years said. Dr. Jensen can be described as a “happy, loving and ethical Christian” who truly cares about his patient’s health and wellbeing. “My inspiration is God,” he said. “He is the most thorough chiropractor you’ll ever come in contact with,” Fisher said, “He’s truly a healer and he loves to help people get better..” This is evident through Jensen’s love and devotion toward his patients and his family. “I really do think about my patients when I’m not working.” Jensen said, “Sometimes I’ll dream of issues my patients are having. If I can’t solve a problem, I will refer them out so that they can get the treatment they need to stay healthy.”

What most people do not know about chiropractors is the extensive education that they undergo. Chiropractic was introduced over 100 years ago as a health care solution. They must obtain over 4,485 classroom hours and fulfill 2300 exams before practicing. In addition, they must pass state board examinations after completion of the chiropractic program, as well as completing yearly continuing education programs that are overseen and approved by the Chiropractic Board. “I was headed towards medical school,” Dr. Jensen said. After interviewing 25-30 different medical professionals He was leaning toward becoming a surgeon or an anesthesiologist. Dr. Jensen’s father, who was a diesel mechanic, saw the benefits of chiropractic work. He told his son he should interview one. “I had never heard of a chiropractor. The most positive response I received was from them.” Jensen said, “And their work rang true to what I believed. Chiropractic just fit me.”

Second to the brain is the spinal system. The brain tells the body to work through the nervous system. That system may be blocked or muffled by disturbances or pinches, which ultimately affect everything else in the body. Our spine directly affects the communication with the nervous system and the brain. “You could basically call me a nerve doctor,” Dr. Jensen said. “I keep the communication between the brain and the body open.” What seperates Dr. Jensen from other chiropractors is that he really takes the time to educate his patients about their health. Patients who understand their bodies are more likely to take care of them. Jensen Chiropractic utilizes both Applied Kinesiology (AK) and the ProAdjuster. What interested Dr. Jensen in AK was the fact that he could actually communicate with the body through testing it. The ProAdjuster scans the spine, finds inconsistencies or irregularities, and gently corrects them.

“Our bodies are more intelligent than any doctor.” Jensen believes, “I’m here to assist that intelligence to function at its highest potential.”

Free workshops are open to the public at Jensen Chiropractic every Tuesday at 6pm by appointment only.

What makes chiropractic unique, according to Dr. Jensen, is its ability to open up the nervous system so that communication is opened to the brain.

What Children Need Most Is Not Perfect Parents But Honest Ones

W

hereas a child’s physical birth is often measured in hours and minutes, its psychological birth is measured in years. Though the seed of individuality is present in infancy, the newborn’s ego is undeveloped and undifferentiated from the vast background of the unconscious. The infant’s ego is like a tree trunk carried by the waves and currents of the ocean, it moves where it is moved. However, if you imagine fashioning from that tree trunk a canoe with oars, then you envision a vehicle which offers a modicum of autonomy and self-determination to its rider. This is analogous to the process of personality development. As the ego differentiates (separates) itself from unconscious, a fledgling sense of identity, or “I-ness,” is born. This is the dawn of consciousness and is associated with the growing ability to discern and choose between options. Because the child’s ego is relatively undeveloped, its conscious awareness and stability are proportionately decreased. As a result, it tends to be more sensitive and reactive to the psychological undercurrents of its environment, especially the psychic/emotional atmosphere within the home. For example, in his book, The Dreambody in Relationships, psychologist Arnold Mindell tells the story of a young boy suffering from severe and potentially lethal asthma. In describing the boy’s parents he notes that they were,

Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

“too decent to each other and had an edge against being direct and aggressive.” During a group therapy session in which Dr. Mindell was role playing with another person, the young boy jumped into the middle and attempted to “protect” the other client by putting his hands over Dr. Mindell’s nose and mouth in an effort to cut off his wind. Dr. Mindell sensed the significance of this behavior and relates, “[the] Asthma sufferers I have worked with all experience their symptoms as if something or someone was choking them. With the boy, I reversed the roles and acted like the asthma-maker, cutting off his air. At first he was stunned, but then, slowly but surely, he raised his little arms into the air, resisted me, and yelled, ‘Superman!!’” Dr. Mindell reflects, “His asthma behaved like a challenger, trying to provoke his masculine spirit, his inner ‘Superman power.’ The child needed the asthma to stimulate his masculine energy because the family system he lived in tended to repress dramatic challenges and heroic feats.” In this example, the parents’ unlived

For past issues, go to: www.HBMag.com

10

life was their assertiveness and capacity for strong, decisive action. They were, frankly, too nice, passive, and agreeable. This environment was suffocating to their son (as it surely must have been to their own spirits, although they did not consciously recognize this). The boy’s asthmatic symptoms most likely had a psychosomatic component and, in this case, symbolized the stifling psychological atmosphere of his home. Paradoxically, his asthma was also the psyche’s attempt to help him live more fully. “Learn to fight, or die,” seems to have been its message to both him and, through him, to his parents. Recognizing that the unlived life of a parent(s) can affect the rest of the family helps to place a child’s symptoms and behaviors within the larger context that may be required for their resolution. In her book, The Inner World of Childhood, Jungian psychologist Frances Wickes presents the case of a boy with antisocial tendencies. Specifically, he exhibited deceit, willfulness, poor grades and cruelty to other children. Although his mental abilities were deemed adequate to his grade level, he was described as having “little moral sense” with a strong emotional nature. He had no stable relationships and very little conscious affection. The boy’s parents were unhappily married. His mother suffered from disabling depression and anxiety which she wielded with guilt-inducing drama. She also confessed that from his early

September 2009

infancy she had felt an instinctive repulsion towards her son. However, she was scrupulous in hiding her attitude from him and in performing all of her “motherly duties.” His father was a successful businessman who immersed himself in his work. He lavishly provided for all of his family’s needs, except that of genuine emotional intimacy. In his infrequent talks with his son he would speak of right and high ideals. However, the conversations never seemed to make much impression on the boy. To understand how the parents’ unlived life may have contributed to their son’s behavior and attitudes, some history regarding their relationship is required. They were engaged at a young age. During the engagement the man found that his love really belonged to another woman. His wife-to-be, however, refused to give him up. She told him that “she loved him so much that she was willing to forgive him for being unfaithful and to trust him just the same.” Somehow she was able to convince herself that she really believed this and that her motives were worthy. In his own confusion, and with a desire to do what was right, the man consulted with an old clergyman who told him that he ought to keep his word, that true happiness was found only by sacrificing desire for honor. Dutifully, he ended his relationship with the woman he loved in order to keep his promise to the woman he didn’t. In reality both parents were lying to themselves and to each other. The father immersed himself in his work and became a model husband and provider. He gave to his wife and son all the things society says are important, as if this might somehow compensate for the fact that he sacrificed his soul–and sold out on the woman he truly loved–years earlier. He followed the “laws” of society and the path of least resistance rather than the laws and path of his own heart. He lectured his son about life’s higher values–honesty, integrity, etc.–but it was his lack of integrity, his dishonesty, and his focus upon material wealth that his son learned and lived. As Dr. Wickes points out, “children pay little attention to what

we say, they intuit what we are.” In the mother’s case, her unlived life was her anger and resentment towards her husband who had shattered her dreams and self-esteem by loving another woman more than herself. She stole her position as his wife and maintained it over the years through manipulations anchored in her invalidism. She could never really trust her husband because deep down she knew that his devotion was not based upon love but upon her coercion. But, wanting to imagine and portray the marriage as healthy, she denied her animosity and distrust. Unfortunately, these feelings were then projected upon her son who, by the way, looked very much like his father. This is why she experienced an instinctive repulsion and dislike of him even as an infant. The son, in turn, lived out the unhealthy undercurrents of his mother’s unconscious. Her unexpressed hostility towards him was lived out in his cruelty towards other children. The projection of her distrust likely contributed to the development of his own deceitfulness; he became the person she (unconsciously) treated him as. Following these examples, some parents might infer that if they were just more “together,” mature, or whole, then their children would not develop the problems they do. In this regard it is important to remember that our children enter life with their own psychological and physical dispositions and temperaments. The symptoms and behaviors that they express may reflect unconscious processes within the family without necessarily being caused by them. In other words, the boy in the first example may have suffered from asthma long after his parents dealt with their assertiveness issues, and the boy in the second example may have had antisocial tendencies which merely dovetailed with the sad undercurrents of his parents’ relationship. In helping our children through their struggles and problems, the focus should not be in placing blame, but in seeking out the opportunities to learn more about ourselves and our unlived life. None of us lives the whole of our

September 2009

11

potential (and in some ways this is good because, let’s face it, we all have the potential to do some pretty lousy things). What matters is our willingness to wrestle with our own issues and to live life with integrity. What children need most is not perfect parents, but honest ones. References: 1. Johnson, Robert A. ummer has come and gone. In the midst of fall we find ourselves frantically rushing about getting ready for work and/or school to pick up again at the steady pace that once left us yearning for the vacation time we enjoyed only weeks before. During this time it is likely we may pick up a few scrapes or cuts or be avoiding previous ones that are now becoming infected. The widespread use of antibiotics has given rise to strains of bacteria that are highly resistant to most conventional drugs. This fall, heal your ailments the all-natural way. Cuts, Scrapes and Scratches

• St. Johns Wort has capabilities to help heal wounds.

• Apply a drop or two of lavender oil directly to the wound, always after it is cleaned. • Cayenne pepper can be used on minor scrapes and scratches for quick relief, but never on open wounds. Cayenne contains capsaicin, which helps speed healing and blocks pain messages to the brain. Wipe off when pain is lessened. • To help kill bacteria and speed healing, sprinkle on granulated sugar. Smear petroleum jelly around outside of wound

or many people who have celiac disease, food sensitivities, or food allergies, eating and living happily in our society can be a quite a challenge. Food has great significance in our culture, and is a central piece of social interactions in our schools, workplaces and nearly every social event. It is easy to feel excluded when you cannot eat what everyone else is eating. It can also feel overwhelming and exhausting to plan meals, cook nearly all of your own food, monitor the food whenever anyone else has prepared it, examine food prep areas for cross contamination, and decipher all of the complicated food labels. Many people need to, or choose to, eat only certain foods, which can make anyone feel restricted and frustrated. Over time I have developed the following strategies and beliefs that have helped me to embrace and truly enjoy living a gluten-free life. Focus on what you can eat: We are very fortunate to live in a country with so many different foods available to us at any time. Even with a restricted diet, there are still hundreds of foods that can be eaten. The journey and adventure is in finding new foods to love. Before I had a child, I enjoyed traveling frequently. Many staple foods in other cultures do not contain gluten, so I often use the delicious meals I have eaten while traveling as inspiration. However, you do not need to have actually visited a country to use its food as inspiration.

Eating many different ethic cuisines adds a sense of fun and adventure to eating. Take breakfast for example: in Turkey they usually serve fresh tomato and cucumber slices, hard boiled eggs and a chunk of delicious feta cheese. Japan is quite different; they often have hot soup and rice with vegetables for breakfast. Just imagine how many new and varied foods you would eat if you just ate a typical meal from another county once a week. Appreciate what you have: Often times, our perception of other people is that they are healthy, happy, and that everything in their life is going smoothly. In reality, most people are like us. In some ways they are lucky, and in other ways they are challenged. Some people

have health concerns now, and other people may have some health concerns later. My journey with celiac disease has brought me through the phases of poor health, to finally getting diagnosed, and then working for over 2 years to reach a healthy state. I believe that because I experienced my health struggles early in my life, I will be a healthier person for the rest of my life. Many other diseases are only treatable with drugs that have side effects, and some diseases are not treatable at all. Celiac disease is so easily treated, just change the foods you eat, which in our society is most often to healthier foods. Be grateful that to treat celiac disease, all you need to do is eat a gluten free diet.

through the body. Chinese medicine refers to this energy as chi (pronounced chee); in Japan it is known as ki (pronounced key). Here in the West, we have proven the existence of this energy by using microvolt meters, high-tech electrical devices that measure energy and electrical charges throughout the body. Meridians are the energy pathways that connect acupressure points to one another and to the internal organs and the limbic brain, which has been called the center of our emotions. Just as blood vessels nourish the body physically, meridians circulate healing energy to all systems of the body. We have this magnificent free built-in physical and emotional healing/ balancing system which very few of us here in the West know how to use. Daily stress or emotional disturbances inhibit the circulation of energy throughout these meridians. The resulting tensions accumulate at acupressure points and as tension from stress builds or becomes chronic, blood circulation decreases, negatively affecting body functions. For instance, tightness in the chest can make breathing difficult. Pressing or tapping certain acupressure points on the chest can free breathing, reduce chest pain and even relieve depression. Detailed photos and diagrams in this book show the exact points which can alleviate a variety of emotional problems,

many of which cause physical symptoms. As you free your body’s energy by using acupressure, then greater health, mental clarity and an expanded awareness will occur, dissolving conflicts between mind and body. Dr. Gach addresses complaints such as abandonment, abuse, addiction, anger, anxiety and panic attacks, co-dependency, depression, grief, phobias, guilt, shame, incest, jealousy, resentment, mood swings, PTSD, self-doubt and many more. Any of these can be causing physical symptoms as well as the usual sorrow and misery. Dr. Gach has written four books, eight booklets, has produced four voice-guided self-healing CDs and eight instructional videos. He founded the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley where he teaches many mind-body modalities, as well as advanced acupressure courses. I have used his techniques in my practice for years, and can personally attest to the accuracy of his information. This wonderful book can be purchased from www.amazon.com for $15.00. he United States Environmental Protection Agency is working with state, local, and tribal governments to reduce air toxic releases of 188 pollutants to the environment. Examples of toxic air pollutants include benzene, found in gasoline; perchlorethlyene, emitted from some dry cleaning facilities; and methylene chloride, used as a solvent and paint stripper by a number of industries. Examples of other listed air toxins include dioxin, asbestos, toluene, and neurotoxin metals such as aluminum, cadmium, mercury, chromium, and lead compounds. Some of the above toxins are being used in “carbon” infrared sauna heaters which are extremely EMF toxic. When toxins are present in the body, blood circulation is blocked and cellular energy is impaired. The best solutions for detoxification in all of the above cases, one medical doctor suggests, is nutritional counseling, a “Toxic Relief” program. You can also sweat them out daily with the use of an infrared sauna that is EMF safe. “The infrared therapy stimulates the cellular metabolism and breaks up the water molecules that hold toxins within the body, thus allowing the body to vent toxins through perspiration. “These radiant therapy treatments combined with a customized diet and nutritional program have vastly improved, restored and rejuvenated many of my patients at the cellular level. Therefore, allowing them to feel better and lead a healthier lifestyle." For more info, contact Diane Underwood specializing in Reverse Aging at (775) 327-4878. Every country sprays their agriculture. Spraying is a common pesticide treatment used just about everywhere in the United States. Although there are several conflicting opinions regarding the use of pesticides, the use of them has been scientifically proven harmful to humans, animals and the environment. Reno is in the prevailing wind direction from California’s extensive agricultural spraying, subjecting locals to the daily chemical overload. It has been going on for years. Every other Thursday Reno and surrounding areas are also spayed with a pesticide chemical called Altosid by planes for “vectors”, in this case, mosquitoes.

Summer/Fall Detoxification Submitted by Diane Underwood

S

ummertime is for outdoor activities with friends and family. It is also a time to pay more attention to evacuating harmful toxins that get ingested in the body. Many people travel to camp or picnic at the beach, which can increase the risk of exposure to pathogens. Traveling adds an enormous contributing factor of parasitic infections from the food and drinking water, as well as to our choices of swimming water. Reactions stemming from summer pollens, chemicals from air conditioning, insecticides/pesticides spraying, hidden food ingredients, wild fires or the chlorine, parasites, microorganisms, lead, mercury, arsenic, nitrates, sulfates, fecal or pharmaceutical matter from the drinking water are some of the reasons to detoxify even more aggressively at the beginning of each season.

Altosid uses S-Methoprene, an insect growth regulator (IGR). It is a larvicide that works on mosquitoes and other pests immature, egg and larvae stages. Immature pests exposed to this IGR cannot mature because they are over-loaded with a juvenile hormone mimic that forbids them from reaching adulthood and reproduction. The larvae will die in its immature stage. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, if Methoprene is released into the air “it will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere.” If released into water, the potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is very high. Methoprene is slightly toxic to fish but highly toxic to other freshwater inhabitants. Information obtained directly from Altosid Briquettes Specimen Label states “keep out of reach of children” and “precautionary statements hazards to humans and domestic animals, caution, environmental hazard.” When we swim in pools, run along a trail, hike a hill or ride a bike on spray days; this may affect our children, our pets and the surrounding wildlife. Even though our government suggests they only use biologically safe chemicals, they still recommend avoiding contact for at least 30 minutes after spraying. A simple way to avoid a “reaction” is to stay inside, shut all windows and run an air purifier,

especially on spray days. Be aware; see if you notice more people complaining about their “allergies” during spraying times.

Treating Alzheimer’s Disease With Reiki

A

lzheimer’s disease accounts for more than half of all organically caused memory loss and it is the fourth leading cause of death in the aged following heart disease, cancer and stroke. It is a disorder of the brain, causing damage to brain tissue over a period of time. Alzheimer’s causes a global loss of intellectual abilities, which is severe enough to interfere with daily functioning. Initial symptoms are subtle; the person may show signs of personality change, memory loss, poor judgment, have less initiative, be unable to learn new things, have mood swings or become easily agitated. As the disease progresses, the victim gradually develops speech and language problems, movement and coordination difficulties, total confusion and disorientation and will ultimately rely completely on a caregiver for daily functioning. As a Gerontologist, Administrator and caregiver of a six-bed Alzheimer’s care home, Reiki treatments have proven to be

Written by Therese Johnson successful. A technique called “Validation therapy” by Naomi Feil is used in combination with Reiki, which provided the best results for eliminating many difficult Alzheimer’s behaviors. The difficult behaviors successfully reduced and or eliminated using Reiki and Validation therapy were wandering, paranoia and pacing. In addition the Reiki improved residents lucidity or “ moments of clarity” when they received Reiki on a regular basis. One resident was in the fourth stage of Alzheimer’s and suffered from many symptoms including severe agitation, anxiety and restlessness and would continually pace the floors and grounds of the care home, she could not sit down long enough to even eat her meals. She had lost weight, become frail, malnourished and underweight by the time she had arrived at my care home. Nurses would follow her around with a straw in a glass full of a supplement drink, trying to get her to drink, which was very difficult and frustrating. Her pacing activity increased until she received Reiki treatments. She then would sit perfectly still while she was fed. This was a great improvement and provided tremendous help in maintaining her weight and keeping her physical health from declining. Once Alzheimer’s patients’ physical health begins to deteriorate their overall condition generally deteriorates much more rapidly, leaving them at risk of becoming immobilized patients who end up in a convalescent nursing hospitals. Another resident suffered from wandering, paranoia, and pacing. This patient made numerous daily efforts to leave the care home (with no idea where she was going) but after a month of starting the Reiki and Validation treatment combination, her

Reiki Symbol efforts to leave the care home declined to once a month. The successful results obtained using Reiki with Alzheimer’s residents led to nutritional and holistic remedies being added to create a whole body, mind and spirit program. Providing Reiki along with an environment that enables the Alzheimer patient to maintain a higher functioning with diet correction, supplementation and detoxification remedies conducted by a naturopathic doctor and nutritionist has provided great success for these individuals. here are many different types of body-work available, the most well known being massage. Serious and sometimes debilitating diseases can be alleviated through massage. What most people do not realize is that there are a variety of specific massage treatments designed for different health issues. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (symptoms include pain, tingling, burning and numbness of the hand and wrist area) has intensified in the past twenty years. People entering data on their computers, hair stylists, casino dealers, construction workers and anyone else whose job performance includes repetitive motion can be affected. Sports can also cause repetitive stress injuries to the tendons in the wrist. When the tendons swell, they press against the median nerve, which passes through the same opening between wrist bones and fibrous support tissues. The median nerve transmits sensations from the hand to the brain. If the median nerve becomes pinched, these signals are blocked, causing numbness and tingling. Common treatments include immobilization of the hand, physical therapy and surgery for extreme cases. Massage therapy eases the symptoms of repetitive stress injuries such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and can increase grip

strength, according to a recent study conducted by staff at the Touch Research Institutes at the University of Miami School of Medicine. The massage routine in the study consisted of stroking of moderate pressure from the fingertips to the elbow. Results of the study showed that the subjects in the massage group had significantly less pain and reduced carpal tunnel symptoms, as well as increased grip strength. Tennis elbow and Golfer’s elbow are forms of tendinitis and are sports injuries caused by overuse of the arms, elbows and forearm muscles, the tendons suffer microscopic tears through injury or overuse, which cause pain and inflammation. However, elbow pain does not just afflict tennis players and golfers, it can occur in anyone with overuse of repetitive arm, elbow and wrist movement. These can include baseball players, bowlers, gardeners, house or office cleaners, carpenters, mechanics and assembly-line workers. A common treatment is to prescribe drugs to mask the pain, however drugs do not ultimately fix the problem. Massage is a much less radical alternative for these issues. Trigger point-massage techniques, even as self-treatments at home can be used to alleviate muscle pain effectively. For carpal tunnel a massage therapist can stretch the tissues that would be cut during surgery, making more room for the

tendons and median nerve. Another technique is to shorten the forearm muscles through compression, allowing them to relax. This reduces the tendon inflammation and swelling that trigger the problem in the first place. Diabetes, a much more serious disease, can cause severe loss of circulation in the extremities. This loss is due to micro vascular disease, where the cholesterol imbalances caused by diabetes result in blockage of the arteries. Eventually the lack of circulation allows infection to occur in the affected tissue. As blockages become extreme, amputation of the extremity may be required.

Is Your Body’s “Use-By” Date Past Due? Written by Dr. Bruce Eichelberger, OMD

A

travel together. So unless you enjoy the idea of feeling painful, tired and sick as you get older, it pays to do something to reduce or eliminate this process now.

Oxidation occurs as a chemical reaction of fats and oils when exposed to oxygen, heat or light. The easiest way to understand oxidation is to recall what happens when fats and oils go rancid. Rancid food smells and tastes awful. It becomes totally inedible. Oxidation in foods also destroys nutrients.

1. Start by fine-tuning your diet. Food is the foundational basis of every single biochemical reaction in your body, including oxidation & inflammation. Without the right “fuel” going into the tank (food in your stomach), literally nothing else you do for your health will be as effective. In some cases it will not be effective at all.

nti-oxidants are in the news a lot the past few years. In fact, a recent search for the term online brought up 8,850,000

results! But what exactly is oxidation, and why is it such a big deal?

In a sense, oxidation inside your body is the same. It impairs your body’s ability to function normally. Oxidation leads to inflammation and outright tissue damage. Along the way it also speeds the aging process. For example, oxidative damage in the energy factories (mitochondria) of the cells, reduces their efficiency, leading to lowered energy levels. And then there is the fact that high levels of oxidation, also called oxidative stress, speed the shortening of telomeres in the DNA. The shorter your telomeres, the closer you are to death. This applies in specific diseases as well. Research points to the fact that free radical damage is a major causative factor in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) and Parkinson’s Disease. When you look at oxidative stress and it’s relationship to inflammation you can see how it also contributes to arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease. What this tells us is that the twin enemies of a healthy aging process are oxidation and inflammation. And they

Here are the exact steps to reduce oxidative stress and lower inflammation:

2. Next, identify and eliminate any blocking factors. These are factors preventing your body from functioning in the perfect way it’s designed to function. They include the accumulation of toxic heavy metals such as lead or mercury, as well as exposure to electromagnetic fields, pesticides, herbicides, stress (both physical & emotional), etc. 3. Identify and eliminate any food sensitivity reactions. Certain foods can trigger reactions up to 3 days after eating them. These reactions range from digestive problems to migraines and joint pain. 4. Bring your adrenals back up to snuff. Most of us who are older than 20 (and some who are younger!) have one degree or another of adrenal fatigue. Strengthening the adrenals supports your body’s ability to survive and thrive at multiple levels. 5. Identify and correct any other systemic inefficiency. This can include weak immune responses, digestive system problems, neurotransmitter (brain chemistry) imbalances and inefficient detoxification capability.

September 2009

21

There are ways to test all of these factors, but generally it makes sense to deal with these issues in the order given above. The reason is that each step supports the next.

Biking across Australia South to North - Part 10

"Do you have a bloody death wish, biking in the middle of the road, no lights, no helmet?" shouted the police officer somewhat annoyed after he had stopped me in the middle of nowhere. "You endanger your life, biking at night." "Sorry, officer, I didn’t think it was that dark yet." I showed him my front and rear light fixtures and turned them on. Seemingly at least a little appeased, he took off again. It can get quiet dangerous in the outback and I realized then just how easy it is to forget about safety. The weather had changed and I was anxious for it to get warmer again. First it became very windy, at times causing me to really struggle. Then it had started to rain, I thought this was the dry season and I was aggravated! I had used a lull in the rain to stop and eat at the site of a monument, which had been dedicated to honor the pioneer who had built the original telegraph line through the area. Ironically enough, here lie the beginnings of technology, while I chose to live a simpler life. After a kind lady had stopped her car next to me and provided me with water and candy, Herbert arrived. He was from Berlin, tall and with a full black beard. I liked him immediately. We traveled together for the rest of the day; it was great meeting all sorts of different people on my journeys. He maintained a faster pace than I was used to and I had to struggle to keep up with him. “He must be in great shape,” I thought. “Or am I just getting old?” On the other hand he was taller, leaner and probably 30 years younger than I. This encouraged positive thinking, “My age and physique does not keep me from experiencing life at its fullest capabilities.” He, like all long distance bikers I met, was loaded with much luggage. His business card said that he was a biking know-how guide from Europe. When we made camp at dusk, I had a chance to find out just how thoroughly equipped he was…. Peace, joy and health, Hans

pplied Kinesiology (AK) is now 45 years old! What is AK you might ask? It was introduced in 1964 by Chiropractor, George Goodheart. After making observations about muscle function and health he began teaching AK methods to other chiropractors. AK is a system for evaluating body function that is unique in the healing arts. Much of the improper signaling that occurs in functional health problems is a result of improper balance of the nervous system, organ systems and muscular system. With AK techniques, advances have been made in this functional evolution. Corrections are directed towards nutritional supplementation, glandular function, neurological function and sometimes the mental aspect, such as an imbalance in hormones or nutrition of health. In 2003 it was the 10th most frequently used chiropractic technique in the United States and has also been used by naturopaths, medical doctors, dentists, nutritionists, physical therapists, massage therapists and nurse practitioners.

When Applied Kinesiology is used in conjunction with the standard methods of diagnosis developed in medicine and chiropractic work, chiropractors have a greater ability to understand a patient’s health problems.

examination focuses on how the body is disfunctioning, the cause of dysfunction, and finally the therapeutic efforts that will enable it to regain and maintain health.

Much of the improper signaling that occurs in functional health problems is a result of improper balance of neurohumoral control. This humoral system directly or indirectly alters cardiac function, vascular function and arterial pressure. With AK, techniques and advances have been made in this functional evolution. Corrections are directed towards nutritional supplementation, glandular function, neurological function and sometimes even the mental aspect of health.

AK recognizes that the body is a self-maintaining and self-correcting mechanism; it looks at the patient and the body as a whole. When health is lost, something is interfering with the body’s adaptability and it is unable to cope with the different environmental stresses. The

Patients with a musculoskeletal dysfunction as the cause of their dyspareunia may be referred to physical therapy for treatment. Interventions may include manual therapies such as trigger point release, joint and soft tissue mobilization, patient education, biofeedback, vaginal dilators, modalities and exercise. Studies have shown that Physical therapy treatment for short, painful and weak pelvic floor muscles can be highly effective.

Written by Jane O’Brien

The pelvis is lined with muscles which move the hips, support the pelvic organs, help with elimination and create sexual pleasure. These muscles are attached to the fascia (connective tissues) of the hip. This links the function of the pelvic floor muscles directly to the hips. If the pelvis is not level, the pelvic muscles will either be stretched (too long) or be in tension (too short). Power is equal to force times distance. If the lengths of the muscles are altered, the muscle force needs to change to maintain power and proper muscle function.

D

yspareunia is defined as pain before, during or after intercourse. Reviews in literature indicate that a prevalence of as many as 50 percent of women experience pelvic pain and painful intercourse. Despite the prevalence, this problem is commonly overlooked and untreated. If left untreated, pelvic pain can deter one from engaging in sexual activity.

There are many reasons for dyspareunia including musculoskeletal dysfunction, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, post-operative scarring and adhesions. People experiencing dyspareunia from musculoskeletal dysfunctions may be presented with associated joint mobility issues, muscle pain, tension and weakness of the pelvic floor muscles. To effectively treat dyspareunia, intervention must consider the underlying condition

An orgasm is defined as sexual climax and is characterized by intense physical pleasure accompanied by quick cycles of muscle contraction in the lower pelvic muscles which surround the primary sexual organs. Tension in the pelvic floor muscles can cause weakened contractions of the pelvic floor muscles. In other words, pelvic floor tension can lead to decreased orgasm potential! Seek help from a Women’s Health PT to improve your quality of life and recapture your sex life. Receiving treatment from a Women’s Health Physical Therapist who is trained in Pelvic Floor Disorders can alleviate pelvic muscle tension, pelvic pain and benefit your sex life. It is not uncommon for a Women’s Health practitioner to work with a patient to alleviate pelvic pain and find that a by-product of the treatments is improved orgasms.

They were developed to provide overall health and happiness. Shiatsu’s tradition originates from Japan, 1940 and uses a therapy based on Western anatomy and physiology. Licensed medical practitioners use their fingers, palms and especially thumbs to apply pressure to particular sections on the surface of the body related to the central and autonomic nervous systems. This massage technique is used for the purpose of correcting imbalances in the body, for maintaining and promoting health, and for the healing of specific illnesses. Chinese Chigong deals with human energy flow. This technique allows the use of the human body's chakras and meridians, or the body's focal points and channels through which energy flows. Chinese medicine believes many illnesses are caused by blockages in these channels. Chinese Chigong rec-

am-packed with Earth’s purest sources of powerful nutrients, Chocolate Bliss super-blend has over 1200 active ingredients including raw Cacao (Earth’s best source of anti-oxidants, magnesium and chromium among many other attributes). It Is designed as a Daily Core Food for athletes, pregnant/nursing mothers, raw-fooders and those desiring super health. The smooth, rich chocolate flavor is enjoyable to most mainstream people, including children. Primary effects are continuous peak mood.

The Benefits Of Chocolate Bliss Chocolate Bliss represents a pinnacle in Superfood alchemy. It synergistically combines the highest quality raw, vegan ingredients to create a unique food that nourishes the body, mind and spirit. Those who nourish themselves with Chocolate Bliss on a daily basis are realizing new levels of health, spiritual awakening, mental clarity and BLISS!

Why Is Raw Cacao So Amazing? All chocolate begins as raw cacao. The cacao bean comes from the fruit of the cacao plant, which grows in tropical jungle regions. When raw cacao is processed to make chocolate, it undergoes exposure to extreme heat, which destroys most of the heat-sensitive nutrients. When cacao is kept in its raw state, it is the most nutritionally potent food on the planet. It contains:

• More antioxidants than any known food (including pomegranates, red wine, blueberries and green tea). The antioxidants in raw cacao are highly stable and easily metabolized. NOTE: Studies indicate that dairy products specifically block the absorption of all the great antioxidants in cacao. • MAGNESIUM. (The highest source of magnesium of any known food) Magnesium balances brain chemistry, builds strong bones (by balancing calcium levels), and is associated with more happiness. Magnesium is one of the major minerals in the Standard American Diet (SAD) that people are deficient in; over 80% of Americans are chronically deficient in Magnesium. • SULFUR. Known as the beauty mineral, sulfur builds strong nails, hair, beautiful, shiny skin, detoxifies the liver, and supports healthy pancreas functioning. Anecdotal reports indicate that cacao detoxifies mercury because of its high sulfur content. • MAO Inhibitors. Cacao seems to diminish appetite, probably due to its monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors. These rare MAO inhibitors facilitate enhancing and rejuvenation. • Phenylethylamine (PEA). PEA is an adrenal-related chemical that is also created within the brain and released when we are in love. This is one of the reasons why love and chocolate have a deep cor-

relation. PEA also plays a role in increasing focus and alertness. • Anandamide (The Bliss Chemical). Produced naturally in the brain, this neurotransmitter has been isolated in cacao. Anandamide is known as “The Bliss Chemical” because it is released while we are feeling great. Cacao contains enzyme inhibitors that decrease our bodies’ ability to breakdown anandamide. This means that natural anandamide and/or cacao anandamide may stick around longer when we eat cacao. • Theobromine, a relative of caffeine, which has a relaxing effect on the smooth muscle groups, deepens breathing, and produces a subtle, clear sense of emotional well-being. Also, theobromine has been found to destroy 102 types of bacteria! • Surprisingly high amounts of vitamin C, higher than any other nut or seed, by far. There is no vitamin C in processed chocolate. Simply put, raw cacao is the most nutrient dense and chemically complex food known to man. References: 1.I Am Beautiful Superfoods <www:iambeautifulsuperfoods. com> 2. Skae, Teya. Allergic reactions to hair products, such as itching and redness can be harmless, but some catastrophic cases have resulted in asthma attacks, multi-organ failure and hospitalization. triggered not only by a specific chemical contained in the hair color but also by the amount of that chemical. Since sixty percent of what is placed on the skin is absorbed into the blood, reducing the amount of chemicals in your hair color could, therefore, mean a reduced risk of allergic reaction. SanoTint, manufactured in Switzerland, is the most natural hair-coloring product on the market that creates a deep, rich, permanent hair color that will cover grey hair. SanoTint hair color uses Golden Millet and natural plant extracts to safely color your hair without damaging it. SanoTint hair color is a safe, do-it-yourself hair treatment due to the natural ingredients of its formula, which are: extracts of Golden Millet, Olive, Birch and Grape Seed as well as Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5) and Biotin. It is important to note that there is no such thing as a purely natural hair color, if you want permanent color you have to use chemicals. Although SanoTint uses chemicals, they use the least amount possible. SanoTint contains no ammonia, less than two percent peroxide (instead of the 10-12 percent that other brands use) and less than 0.5 percent p-Phenylenediamine (PPD). The SanoTint Light product

I’m not ready for fall. I didn’t get to do what I wanted this summer. It seems like everyone else had their summer vacation and I didn’t. As a mother and wife I’m feeling resentment.

A:

It sounds as if you didn’t get vacation time, and that’s causing the resentment. When we don’t take care of ourselves there can be a backlash of anger that has nothing to do with the people or the circumstances, it more has to do with the fact that we didn’t take time for ourselves.

Are you feeling...

One of the wonderful things about living in the Reno/Tahoe area is that there are fabulous opportunities for weekend fun, and even day fun. Vacation time is important for rejuvenating the mind, body and soul. Try spending a day at Lake Tahoe. Play hooky, go during the week, and beat the crowds. We should all try it once in a while. It is liberating and exciting, which are feelings that alleviate stress. In September the lake is at its very warmest, so do not let the idea of fall prevent you from taking advantage of this truly stunning place.

overwhelmed depressed restless alone unattractive inadequate disconnected spiritually

Another cause for these feelings could be school starting, even if you don’t have children. Everything gets amped up a notch, and you can feel it. This can cause anxiety, which leads to stress. How do we deal with this? By slowing down. My mantra for everyone is to “slow down, and take things one at a time.”

In $$$ and In Health Written by Cherie Schneider, RPh

ne often-overlooked area in the pursuit of a healthier, eco-friendly lifestyle is in the choice of menstrual hygiene products. Many women are not aware that choices exist beyond the disposable pads and tampons they grew up with. Let’s take a look at our current choices.

Tampons, due to their absorbent properties, upset the natural moisture content and pH balance of the vagina. This can lead to irritation, abrasions, or infections. Concerns have been raised about the sloughing of and retention of tampon fibers within the vagina after a tampon has been removed.

Tampons and pads are made from bleached fibers of cotton and/or rayon (manufactured from wood pulp). Prior to 1999 a chlorine gas bleaching process was used which produced dioxins, a family of chemicals, which pollute the environment and are suspected cancer causing agents. Today, many manufacturers are instead using chlorine dioxide as a bleaching agent, which, although its use is classified as being a dioxin-free process, can theoretically produce small amounts of dioxins.

Environmentally speaking, disposable products produce huge amounts of waste. In North America, more than 12 billion pads and tampons (plus all of their packaging) are disposed into landfills and sewer systems annually. It is estimated that the sanitary products and their accompanying wrappers used by an average woman in her lifetime would fill a dump truck.

These same fibers can harbor bacteria, leading to infections. A very real risk associated with bacteria in tampon use is Toxic Shock Syndrome. This is a very serious disease, which in rare cases, can be fatal.

Reusable cloth pads

the likelihood of bacterial or yeast infections. A wide variety of pads exist on the market, ranging from simple unbleached organic cotton, to wild whimsical prints in cotton, hemp, fleece, or bamboo fabric. Available in a range of sizes and absorbencies, most are designed with “wings that snap around the underwear. Maintenance is as simple as hand washing or soaking used pads in cold water until they can be machine-washed. As long as the rinse water is changed daily, laundering can be deferred until the end of your period. (Repurpose an old percolator-style coffee pot from an antique store as a soaking vessel to make changing the rinse water easy.) Pads will typically last for 5 or more years.

Here are some healthy, cheaper and more natural alternatives: Menstrual cups Cloth pads have a distinct advantage over disposables in that they allow the skin to breathe. This reduces wetness, chafing, irritation, odor, and decreases

The first menstrual cups were actually produced in the 1930s. Today's versions are basically a flexible, bell-shaped cup that is inserted into the lower portion of the vagina, to collect (rather than absorb), the menstrual flow. They are made of

September 2009

either latex rubber or medical grade solid silicone—the same material used in artificial heart valves. (Please note: This is NOT the silicone GEL associated with leaking breast implants.) Menstrual cups can be safely worn for up to 12 hours, removed, emptied, rinsed and immediately reinserted. A properly inserted cup should not leak. Because they do not absorb, they will not disrupt the natural moisture balance or pH of the vagina, nor will they cause abrasions. There has to date, never been a single case of Toxic Shock Syndrome associated with menstrual cup use. A properly maintained cup can last for 5 to10 years. At a cost of around $35, a cup will produce monetary savings after a few short months. Numerous women have reported that making the switch to reusable products has resulted in shorter, lighter periods, with less cramping and discomfort than experienced with disposables.

Don’t Be The Victim

Traditional vs. Radical Forgiveness Written by Dinny Evans

E

leanor Roosevelt once said, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” When allowing outside sources to control your feelings and emotions, you become the victim. Allowing yourself to become the victim is a problem that Radical Forgiveness (RF), a tool used by an RF coach, addresses. Affirmations such as, “everything is perfect exactly as it is” will not lead to forgiveness. Changes must be made and steps must be taken within yourself. These tools help one get to a point where one can give up being the victim. It is a matter of perspective; begin by viewing an uncomfortable or unpleasant situation as happening for a reason, one that will lead to personal growth and empowerment. Once the situation can be viewed as a learning experience rather than a victimization RF begins. The forgiveness occurs when it is realized that there is nothing to forgive.

not mean that they will not re-surface at some point; it takes Radical Forgiveness techniques to truly heal. Using just TF, the rug will eventually be pulled back and there will lie the uncomfortable and often ugly thoughts, creating resentment. In an attempt to reach traditional forgiveness, stuffing under the rug can create blocks that have been linked to disease. RF moves deeper. Reaching full acceptance means truly believing that everything has happened for a reason. Have you ever looked back on an occurrence that seemed truly horrible at the time it was happening and realized something far better came out of the situation? That is the core of Radical Forgiveness. At some point, see why something happened and know it turned out better. Then move towards finding the perfection of the event and you will move through the situation that much faster. Once perspective is changed, the bigger picture is revealed.

RF challenges you to take full responsibility for every situation that you find yourself in. Taking responsibility does not mean transferring the blame onto your self. You may notice that the situations you find yourself in could have been unconsciously created by you. Take this as an opportunity to heal and grow. You will find that by taking responsibility, blame cannot exist. The further challenge is in accepting that there are no exceptions to this rule.

Having a shift in perception in the long run can be remarkably freeing. Experiencing the circumstances of life without blame provides a new and revitalizing view of the world, one that is incredibly more joyful.

Traditional Forgiveness (TF) gives you the opportunity to let “bygone's be bygone's,” accept the situation and the conditions then move on. The truth is that it is nearly impossible to really forgive under these circumstances. “Stuffing feelings under the rug” does

Is Your Headache A Real Pain In The Neck? Written by Michelle Bean

I

headaches, chiropractors have been helping people with headaches for over one hundred years. It is clearly understood that functional disturbances in the upper neck can cause severe headaches. Upper cervical chiropractors have a specialized systematic approach for detecting disturbances of the neck and correcting them using conservative techniques. Correcting dysfunction within the neck will relieve stress on the structures capable of creating chronic, debilitating headaches.

t is estimated that approximately 90 percent of Americans have experienced a headache at some point in their lives. Headaches have been categorized into different types, the most common being tension headaches and migraines. The causes of headaches are unknown, however, they are believed to be related to such things as muscular tension, dilated/constricted blood vessels, genetics, chemical/hormonal imbalances and stress. Much scientific research has been dedicated to looking for an underlying cause of headaches and, throughout this endeavor, has lead to overwhelming evidence that the pain experienced as a “headache” may NOT be due to any problems occurring in the head, but rather is a problem occurring within the structures of the upper neck. Cervicogenic headache is a relatively new category, yet is becoming widely recognized and accepted within the medical profession due to the substantial amount of evidence pointing towards a cervical (neck) origin. It is now known that there is a cluster of nerve cells located in the spinal cord within the region of the top three vertebrae in the neck that receives sensory information from the head and neck. All painful stimulation coming from the head and neck is sent to the same area located in the upper neck and then sent to the brain for interpretation. By the time the signal reaches the brain, the brain has no way of distinguishing whether that particular pain signal is coming from the head or from the neck, but will often interpret it as a headache. The significance of this information is that problems arising in the upper neck, including the muscles, joints, and ligaments are capable of creating referred pain to the head.

Migraines associated with cervical dysfunction is plausible due to the fact that nerves traveling to the neck region include those coming from the eyes, forehead, inner ear (dizziness) and the GI tract (nausea and vomiting) all of which converge at some point and are capable of influencing each other. Many triggers are known for developing the onset of headaches. The typical example is whiplash, which frequently results in injury and misalignment of the bones in the upper neck. Other triggers include postural distortion, prolonged deskwork, intense physical workouts, caffeine and emotional tension. Whatever the trigger may be, the mechanism is the same and will produce pain characteristic of migraines and tension headaches. Traditional treatment includes medication and trigger point injections, which aid in blocking specific points within the biochemical pathway but fails to address the underlying cause of the pain. Although researchers are now looking to structures in the upper neck for answers to solving problems with chronic

he Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) evaluated surveys completed by food service directors from 20 school districts in the United States. Many are among the 100-largest districts. School districts from all regions of the country participated: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, and West. PCRM relied on school districts to accurately complete the survey and provide valid information about their menus and nutrition education programs, and a team of PCRM dietitians worked to verify this information. For further information on the review process, criteria, and individual school information please visit http://www.healthyschoollunches.org/reports. Northern Nevada and California are included in the survey.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame of top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. References: Tatum, Anne. Ear Candling. A.P. Enterprises. 1995.

Vitamin C

Rev-up your immune system for summertime! Written by Talia Henderson

V

itamin C is an essential nutrient that the human body, unlike other mammals, cannot produce on its own. It is important to get your daily intake to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle.

A little bit of history. Vitamin C was used to treat skin conditions and wounds, scurvy (a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency), high blood pressure and male infertility. Jacques Cartier, an established explorer, curiously noted that his sailors who had digested oranges, limes and berries did not get scurvy. In 1742, James Lind, a British doctor, was the first person to establish that there was a definite connection between the diet and scurvy.

Fruits and vegetables should be included in your daily diet to make sure you get enough of this ascorbic acid. Fruits and vegetable with vitamin C content include berries, citrus fruits and green vegetables. Here is a short list:

Good sources include asparagus, avocados, beet greens, black currants, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, collards, dandelion greens, dulse, grapefruit, kale, lemons, mangos, mustard greens, onions, oranges, papayas, green peas, sweet peppers, persimmons, pineapple, radishes, rose hips, spinach, strawberries, Swiss chard, tomatoes, turnip greens and watercress.

Help rid yourself of summer allergies naturally! Essentially used for its anti-oxidant power, vitamin C can help the body rid itself of pollutants, allergens or drugs. It can protect your body from free radicals, which may cause heart disease and cancer. Vitamin C is also important because it helps protect the fat-soluble vitamins A and E, as well as fatty acids from oxidation. Anti-oxidants help protect against bruising by strengthening the capillary walls, which means vitamin C is great for your skin! It is responsible for the formation, maintenance and repair of collagen, the substance that forms and repairs the foundation of skin, ligaments, cartilage, vertebral discs, joint linings, capillary walls, and the bones and teeth. Topical creams and lotions containing Vitamin C can be absorbed through the skin. They may also protect against UVA and UVB damage such as redness, formation of abnormal cells and immunosuppression, an illness that reduces the activation or efficacy of the immune system.

(mg/serving)

Red or yellow sweet pepper, raw, medium

Many plants today regarded as weeds were eaten in the past to supplement a poor diet, and some of these, such as goosegrass (Galium aparine), were rich in vitamin C and would have helped prevent scurvy. In the Native American tradition, cranberries, now known to be a rich source of vitamin C, were also used to prevent and treat scurvy. Various types of cranberries were eaten raw in the summer and dried for winter use.

mg = milligrams of vitamin C Although there are supplements available for your daily intake of vitamin C, the best way for your body to absorb this nutrient is naturally, through foods. Vitamin C is the most unstable and easily destroyed vitamin. Oxygen and high temperatures diminish it, thus cooking your fruits and vegetables can reduce your intake of it. Cooking is a chemical process that changes the molecular structure of the food, thus it is best to eat raw or uncooked foods that are high in vitamin C content.

HERBS&SPICES

Rosemary Written by Talia Henderson

his flowering, perennial, evergreen shrub is not just another herb from the kitchen spice rack. Rosemary has been used for a number of ailments such as curing joint paralysis and is believed by some to possess powers of protection against evil spirits.

We continue to use rosemary in many of the same ways that our ancestors did: in potpourris to freshen the air, and in cosmetics, disinfectants and shampoos.

The botanical name, Rosmarinus is derived from old Latin for “dew of the sea” as a reference to its pale blue dew-like flowers and that it grows near the sea.

During the middle Ages, evil spirits were considered a serious matter. Men and women placed sprigs under their pillows at night to ward off demons. Students in ancient Greece wore garlands of rosemary for exams for improved memory. Rosemary grows three to five feet high, and for centuries Christians believed that a rosemary plant would grow no higher than six feet in 33 years so as not to stand taller than Christ.

Rosemary is best known as a symbol of remembrance, friendship and love. It was used in wedding ceremonies as a sign of love and fidelity and funerals as a sign that the departed would not be forgotten. During the 14th and 15th centuries rosemary was burned in homes to keep the Black Death away and during World War II was used to kill germs in hospitals. Rosemary oil has been scientifically proven to provide antibacterial effects and be an effective memory stimulant. Medical research shows the carnosic acid (CA) in rosemary fights off free radical damage in the brain. Herbalists have prescribed rosemary as tonics, astringents, diaphoretics, stomachics, emmenagogues, expectorants and choagogues. It has been used to treat depression, headaches and muscle spasms. Stop Raking Your Yard To Death! Written by Holly Bromley, B.S. & Leslie Lyles, M.S.

T

he leaves are changing from a brisk summer green to the beautiful varied fall colors. Soon the leaves will wither, readying for winter, and a layer will begin to accumulate on the earth floor. You may ache to rake, but leave those leaves! Environmentally conscious people generally embrace recycling as a means of keeping our environment healthy. More and more people desire to take care of our planet and be good stewards of the earth’s resources. However, the concept of recycling did not start with us: nature is the master recycler. Nothing ever goes to waste; every living thing eventually returns to the earth and the nutrients are recycled to be used again in the grand circle of life. There may be an area in your life where you are missing a great opportunity to recycle – your yard! The leaves and pine needles, which fall from our trees in the fall present a natural recycling opportunity. In nature, when leaves drop from trees, the leaf litter builds on the forest floor where it begins to decompose through insect, worm and fungal activity that breaks it down and returns the nutrients to the soil and improves soil texture. Decaying leaves and other plant material enrich the soil and nourish living plants – recycling in action! In our urban environments however, landscapes are usually “raked to death.” Constant raking and removal of fallen leaves prevents natural recycling of nutrients and deprives our soil, and thus our plants, of nourishment. Additionally, when there is no decomposing organic matter at the soil surface, there is no food for earth worms or other types of decomposers that keep the soil loosened and aerated. The result is that the soil (the combination of organic and inorganic matter) becomes just sterile dirt – a tough place for plants to grow. Poor quality soil leads to plant stress, which makes plants more susceptible to attack by insects and disease organisms.

beds over the winter to decompose. Rake them up lightly in the spring leaving the most decomposed layer (leaf mold) at the soil surface. • Run leaves through a chipper and mulch planting beds with the smaller pieces that will break down easier and are less likely to blow away into the neighbor’s yard. • Compost! Take the raked leaves and grass clippings and compost them then add them back to the soil as rich organic compost (you can find great information on the internet about how to compost). • Use wood chip or bark mulch rather than rock mulch. Organic mulches such as these decompose at the soil interface and help amend and feed the soil. • Don’t use landscape fabric under the mulch! Often, there is beautifully decomposing organic mulch sitting on top of landscape fabric. When the fabric is pulled back, the ground underneath is as devoid of organic matter as the day the desert plot was developed. Remember that healthy soil means healthy plants. Healthy soil contains organic matter that improves its texture, allows it to retain moisture better, and allows uninhibited root growth. In the case of fallen leaves, recycling really does start at home. References: 1. Craul, Phillip J. 1999. Urban Soils: Applications and Practices. Dogs

and Thunderstorm Phobia

D

oes your pooch bury his head into your side every time it thunders out? Does he dive under the bed whenever rain starts to fall? From your point of view, this may seem like cute and endearing behavior but it's a sign that your dog is terrified of storms. Some owners are willing to simply put up with symptoms of storm phobias like hiding, trembling, whining, drooling and pacing. In more severe cases, panicking dogs have been known to chew furniture, tear drapes, break windows and cause themselves harm during thunderstorms. In either case, the behavior is a sign of a terrified, unhappy dog.

Causes Storm phobias are one of the most common behavioral problems dog owners face but their cause is not entirely clear. Behaviorists are not yet sure what part of the storm frightens dogs most, whether they're reacting to lightning flashes, the sound of thunder, wind blowing around the house or the sound of rain hitting the roof. Some dogs even start to pace and whine half an hour or more before a storm. They may be reacting to a sudden drop in air pressure, sounds of thunder that we can’t hear yet, or the electrical charge of the air.

Nature Or Nurture? An article in the July/August 2001 issue of the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association describes an Internet survey of the owners of storm-phobic dogs. The authors discovered that some breeds may be predisposed to a fear of storms. Herding dogs, such as collies and German shepherds and hounds, such as beagles and basset hounds, seem to be more likely to develop a storm phobia than other dogs. The phobia is also common in sporting and working breeds. The study suggests that this tendency may be explained in terms of the dogs' genetics. For example, herding dogs have been bred to react quickly to stimuli, but to not respond to their strong predatory drive. This means they have to suppress their natural tendencies which can lead to high levels of anxiety. It is speculated that herding dogs have a strong reaction to the startling noises and flashes of a storm, but they repress any aggressive response to it, causing anxiety. September 2009

KIDSCORNER

The JAAHA study also showed that rescued dogs--dogs adopted from shelters or rescue organizations--may also be more likely to develop storm phobias. The article suggested that these dogs are more likely to have had less socialization or unpleasant, scary experiences prior to being adopted. They may have been abused or abandoned by a former owner or they may not have been exposed to a wide variety of sights and sounds. These kinds of early-life experiences can make dogs more anxious and prone to all kinds of phobias.

What To Do? Talking to your veterinarian is the first step to helping your pup overcome his thunderstorm fears. Your veterinarian can help you develop a program to gradually retrain your dog by gradually and gently helping him adjust to storms through behavior modification. Technically called "systematic desensitization," this procedure involves exposing the storm-phobic dog to some gentle reminders of a thunderstorm, such as a very soft tape recording of thunder or a flashing light. The dog is rewarded with lots of treats, attention and other positive reinforcement only if there is no evidence of anxiety. Over time, the intensity of the stimulus is increased and only calm behavior rewarded (get profession guidance, either from a veterinarian or a veterinary behavior specialist, before you begin this process). If you introduce frightening stimuli too quickly or don't see signs of fear your dog may be showing, you could possibly end up making the phobia worse. If gentle, patient retraining doesn't help your pooch, there are some prescriptions that can. Your veterinarian can prescribe an anti-anxiety or antidepressant medication to help your dog remain calm during storms. You can also make sure your dog has a warm, safe "den" to retreat to when the weather gets too scary. Try padding a crate with blankets or clearing a space underneath your bed. Just make sure that it's somewhere your pup can get out of whenever he wants. A panicked dog can do a lot of damage to his crate and himself if he's confined.

he summer is almost over and you are going to need school supplies! The best way to save money and our planet is to buy eco friendly school supplies! I bought my school supplies at Wal-Mart. I found a wide selection of eco friendly school products. I looked on the labels to see if they were recycled or not. Most of the products were made from 100% recycled materials. So, by the time I was done I had everything I needed for school and we stayed within our budget. Everything I got was eco friendly too, including binders, pencils, note pads and even pens! You might not think that your small purchase of eco friendly school supplies will help our environment, but if students everywhere purchased eco friendly products we could make a huge difference.

It is very important that you remain calm when your dog is afraid. Don't cuddle and reassure him, because it will reward his fearful behavior but don’t punish him for it either. Instead, just be calm and provide him with a safe, familiar place where he can feel secure and ride out the storm. References: 1. Directly referenced from www.healthypet.com

COMMUNICATION

Access to Love in Our Relationships Written by Cheryl Blossom MA, Ed.T

I

f you have ever visited a foreign country and not spoken the language you know how difficult it is to communicate. In our own country people around us speak the same language, but this does not mean that they comprehend what we are saying, it goes beyond just our words. Our gender, family background, culture, schooling, religion, urban or country upbringing all affect our ability to communicate.

Here are a few examples: Noticing and changing our beliefs can transform our communications. Beliefs are conditioned ways of seeing the world. The way our thoughts turn into beliefs is through our emotions. The thought “my spouse never listens to me” does not live like a random fleeting statement; it is cemented into a belief through our feelings toward them.

Do you ever have angry or cold exchanges in your relationships that you settle for as communication? Do you often feel thwarted or ineffective when you try to Our most communicate?

We now have a habit of thinking and feeling a certain way about a person. Our physiology aligns with this conditioned belief and it becomes true for us that our spouse never listens. Any thought that does not match up feels weird and wrong; even if they did listen we probably would not notice. It would not compute because we have conditioned ourselves to feel this way. Our conditioned belief becomes “reality.” Noticing and changing our beliefs can give us access to transforming our “reality.”

I LOST TWO INCHES, SIX POUNDS, AND KEPT IT OFF!

Serenity’s is a life saver!

There has never been a better time to get a healthy fresh start. At Serenity’s, you will wash away unwanted inches, naturally and privately, while taking advantage of the only no-pressure colonic system in the Reno-Tahoe area.

According to Dr. Ahern, in order to change our reality we must make a new belief as visceral as the old one. We must add feelings to our new thoughts. Our entire being must engage in creating this new reality. In order to create a new relationship with our spouse we would need to feel them as loving and caring, as someone who does listen to us. When thinking of them we would need to create feelings of love and happiness while we create the thoughts that they are attentive and want to hear what we have to say. The more that we create these thoughts and emotions, this belief, the more we will have this experience be our reality.

After I went to Serenity’s. I was amazed at my results. I’ve lost two inches off my waist, one inch off my ribs and six pounds overall, and I’ve kept it all off.

Desirae, 24

After twenty closed pressure colonics with minimal results, my bowels were so bad that doctors were considering a colostomy bag. After going to Serenity’s this is no longer an option. I now have bowel mobility and a colostomy bag is no longer an option. I am now on my pathway to better health.

Asking yourself “Is this true?” is a powerful technique introduced by Byron Katie, an American speaker and author who teaches a method of self-inquiry. “My boss is a tyrant.” “My spouse is selfish.” “My kids are not grateful.” “I'm not supported.” When we have a thought about a situation, another person, or ourselves ask the simple question “Is this thought true?”

“80% of the immune system is in the intestines!!!”

Cheryl, 46

“I feel like I am 30 years younger

Our preoccupation with how we see things may keep us out of being present with what is really going on. How do we know that what we are thinking is true? We all build models of the world with our beliefs and then relate to our models as “real” and have a tendency to think that our thoughts or our point of view is the right point of view, the only one to have.

Charlene, age 55

Serenity’s is a Pathway Toward Vibrant Health!”

Serenity’s is home to the only no-pressure colonic system in the Reno-Tahoe area.

Our most intimate relationship is the one we have with our thoughts. When we start to analyze our thoughts and beliefs about “the truth,” our reality will transform. How we relate to our thoughts and beliefs will effect and determine everything in our life, especially how we relate to others. Instead of demanding that others change, observe assumptions. Ask “Is this true?” Communicating from nothing. Communicating from blame has a certain flavor to it. Blaming the person you are communicating with, no matter what the issue, is basically telling them that they are wrong. In this situation people will constantly try to prove that they are right. Holding the point of view that they are wrong will thwart any attempt at communication. Nobody wants to listen when they feel they are being blamed.

Only At Serenity’s Only At Serenity’s...

Practice giving something up in your communication. Give up defending or justifying yourself, controlling, protecting, or trying to make it their fault. Let go of making them wrong, or trying to fix them. Notice if you are manipulating the conversation and stop, just listen.

Gluten Free Lifestyle (Continued from page 13) Change expands our world: My experiences living with celiac disease have spurred an insatiable interest in nutrition and natural health. Since being diagnosed, I have met with Nutritionists, read numerous books on health and attended a nutrition educator-training program. Throughout my training program, I have met the most interesting and inspiring people. Now, I teach a six-week nutrition course to adults and the students testify to how much the classes have improved their quality of life. I know that without my celiac disease, I would not have found this path in my life. Becoming a nutrition educator is one of the best choices I have made, so I am thankful for everything that has happened in my life to bring me to this place. Being “different” can help us learn and grow: Living a large part of my life in pain or discomfort has enhanced my understanding towards other people with similar conditions. The experience of living in our food-centered culture, where I eat differently than most people, most of the time, has helped me to grasp what many other people with food allergies and sensitivities experience every day. Overall, I think that changing the foods I eat has also changed who I am. It is easier to appreciate what I have and not get as worked up about the small stuff. I am more empathic and more understanding of other people’s differences. I am also more aware of my personal boundaries and the things I need to do to take care of my health and wellness. Here is a list of the gluten free foods I could not live without: -Golden yellow cultured butter from grass fed cows -Fresh veggies from my C.S.A. box, the farmer’s market, or my father’s garden -Vibrant, rich egg yolks from pasture raised chickens -A bedtime snack of blackberries with cream -Almond meal, the gluten free baker’s best friend! -Kiwis, Papaya and tangerines -Nuts, raw or dry roasted -Raw honey and pure maple syrup for a bit of sweetness. Gluten-Free Recipe Kofta with Cucumber Sauce and Saffron Rice Submitted by Christine David Photo by Jessica Kullander

T

his gluten free dish was inspired by a trip to Turkey where we ate these delicious spiced meat kabobs. This spice blend is based on my memories of the flavors of Turkish food. These are perfect served with Cucumber Sauce, grilled vegetables like peppers and eggplant, and Saffron Rice. Use organic ingredients when possible.

Kofta Ingredients:

Preparation:

1. Grate the cucumber on a box grater or similar. 2. Place shredded cucumber in a fine meshed strainer over the sink, and sprinkle with 1 tsp. of the salt and allow it to drain for 1-2 hours. If you are concerned about sodium intake you can rinse the cucumber after draining and pat dry. 3. Mix all ingredients together and place in refrigerator for at least ½ hour to allow the flavors to join together. 4. Serve as a dip for the Kofta.

Saffron Rice is continued on our website! Visit www.HBmag.com.

4 cloves minced garlic 11/2 tsp. sea salt 11/2 lbs. ground lamb or beef 1/8 cup finely chopped chives or grated onion 1 tbsp. dried parsley 2 tsp. coriander 1 tsp. cumin 1 tsp. cinnamon ½ cayenne pepper ½ tsp. cardamom or nutmeg

Now accepting new adult and child patients in the South Lake Tahoe area.

Preparation:

1. Mix spices with garlic and onion or chives. 2. Knead spice mixture into the ground meat thoroughly. 3. Form long oval shaped meatballs onto soaked wooden skewers or metal skewers. The meat will be about the shape and size of a thick bratwurst. 4. Grill on each side for 5-6 minutes until cooked to your desired level of doneness. The meat/spice mixture can be made a day ahead if desired.

Washoe County School District (Nev.) *Washoe County School District, the 57th-largest in the country, serves the Reno/Sparks and Lake Tahoe region of Nevada. Applied Kinesiology Alignment & Health

(Continued from page 23) Integrating AK with a ProAdjuster (a new technology) ensures a proper method of fixing functional disturbances in the body. When a Chiropractor palpates your spine, they are checking for joint fluidity, motion and or rigidity. Improper motion affecting the nerve function is called a subluxation. In a similar fashion to palpation, the ProAdjuster can determine whether the vertebra's motion is too rigid or too fluid. However, instead of utilizing the doctor's judgment as to what areas are too rigid or too fluid, the ProAdjuster measures precise levels of motion. Therefore, the ProAdjuster can isolate a problem area faster and more accurately than manual procedures. Also, there is NO twisting, or turning needed to get your nervous system functioning properly. In Dr. David Windsor’s study named the Windsor Autopsy Report, the research found that in almost all cases where there was an organ disease, there was a pinched nerve associated with that organ. Combining Applied Kinesiology with the ProAdjuster to decide which direction the spine or extremities (i.e. arm, leg, etc.) or TMJ (i.e. Jaw) should be adjusted alleviates the pressure on the nervous system. Remember, your alignment is essential to your health; it is to your benefit to utilize professional care for it. References: 1. Applied Kinesiology Synopsis, by David S. Feelings Of Resentment (Continued from page 29) Most of the time caregivers don’t realize they have needs and desires because it is so engrained in them to put others first. Many times I hear them say, “I feel selfish”. When you don’t express your own needs repressed anger can result. Unexpressed anger leads to illness, addictions, eating disorders and general depression. Many of these people come in with a feeling of dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, mild hopelessness and a lot of repressed anger. Society expects caregivers to not show anger, so it gets swept under the rug. For those feeling this way it is important to learn how to set boundaries that allow your own needs to be met. If you relate seek a professional who can sort through the difficulties of setting healthy boundaries. I wish you well. Monthly Health Outlook:

THE SUN IN

VIRGO Written By Robert Ayres

T

he Sun enters Virgo this month on August 22. This is the last month of the summer season. The heat is stimulating. It enlivens and animates the spirit. This should manifest as motivation to improve our lives. Virgo is The Virgin, which symbolizes purity. Out of all the signs of the zodiac, Virgo is the one that rules health and healing. Now is the time to focus on improving your health. Virgos tend to be more concerned with cleanliness, orderliness and health. When this is taken to a negative extreme, the result is the hypochondriac. The key is balance. Virgo specifically rules the processes of cleansing and purification. The human body has built in systems to release toxins and pollutants. Systems work better when they are not fouled by the death principle. The life principle is in a constant battle with the death principle, or as physics describes it, the law of entropy. The intestines are the primary organ for the elimination of toxins from the body. Now is a perfect time to have a focused regimen of cleansing the body. Fasting, diet, liver cleanse, sauna, hot mineral springs, colonics and massage bring very significant results at this time. The planetary ruler of Virgo is Mercury, the planet of mind. At a more spiritual level, the need is to cleanse and purify our

thinking. This addresses the fundamental issue of human nature. The word “man” is derived from the Sanskrt word manas, which means “to think.” The essence of humanity is that we are thinking beings. As we think, so we are. This forms the basis of our being. The keyword for Mercury is to think. Esoterically, there is a direct connection between the brain and the intestines. The health of our excretory system has a subtle but profound effect on the development of higher states of consciousness. If our thinking is not aligned with divine thinking, then our life is out of harmony with nature. This disharmony will result in disease and ill health. When we observe the state of health of the American populace and the trillions of dollars spent each year on health care, we must conclude that something is seriously wrong. The true source of health is based in purity of thought. This is the primary principle of Virgo. Cleansing and purifying our minds of untruth and ignorance is the true goal. The quest for truth and living it in every thought, feeling and action should be a priority. Placing value on honesty and truthfulness in our September 2009

lives and demanding it of others is a prerequisite for the achievement of true health. It is very important to live one’s life where personal integrity is of the utmost importance.

Relief for Pelvic Floor Issues

The archetype of Virgo is that of the teacher/healer. We teach each other most profoundly through example. Knowing and living truth is a powerful support for health. It is time to consciously align our lives with the rhythms and cycles of nature. Get back to a true understanding of the cosmic essence of life as presented to us by the stars.

Regular massage can improve circulation to the extremities. Though massage will not cure diabetes, it can reduce pain in the extremities by increasing blood circulation through the small arteries that the disease is trying to block. Exercise and weight reduction are important factors in diabetes treatment to control blood sugar levels. Patients can tolerate more exercise and get better results by using massage therapy to reduce post-exercise pain and stiffness.

In the state of Nevada licensed massage therapists are required to get continuing education. When you are looking for a massage therapist and you have specific problems you want to address you should find out what areas they specialize in to see if they are a fit for you. For instance, if you are a sport enthusiast you might want to find a therapist trained in sports therapy. There are a number of problems that can quite often be relieved or alleviated by a massage therapist trained for each individual issue.

Communication: Access To Love In Our Relationships

(Continued from page 43)

A powerful communication technique introduced by Landmark Education is bringing nothingness to the communication. A way to do this is by being interested in how the world occurs for the person you are communicating with. Practice listening from the question: “Have I heard this before?” When the answer is “yes” look for something to give up. Bringing nothingness to a conversation takes discipline and practice. When you communicate from nothing you can truly listen to the other person. You can create something in the communication. Your communications and relationships will transform. Master acknowledgement. Another way to transform your communications is to master acknowledgement. This does not mean the “You look nice” compliment. Acknowledgement is not describing or manipulating anything; it is about creating a reality. Bring the experience of being acknowledged into existence as you generate the acknowledgment. If you start to listen for what people want to be recognized for and acknowledge them communication will open and lighten up. References: 1.
