he first thing that comes to my mind in September: school.Where I grew up, school always started the day after Labor Day. It seems that the West Coast area deems August as the best month to begin school. Yes, those smoldering days are sure to add to any hot, irritable and sweaty child’s attention span. All joking aside, my family is adjusting to the “early” start date. This year, I have an 8th grader and twin daughters in Kindergarten. My little guy still has a couple more years to go. So, as a veteran parent, I thought I knew pretty much everything I needed to know about school. The thing is, once you’ve surpassed parenting an elementary school aged child, and move on to middle school, you start to forget those little things like labeling everything, making sure you pack a lunch and a snack, and of course, drop off and pick up takes twice as long. This is due to the Kindergarten-separation trauma, experienced by both child and parent. Fortunately, my kids love spending time with me, but also understand and accept their desire to have a break from mom (and daycare). They show this by stepping into their classroom and essentially forgetting that I exist. Silver lining: they’re adjusting well. As you, your children or grandchildren fall back into school this year, keep the spirit of “school” alive. Try to learn something new every day. You might even try unlearning a few things. As we get older, settling into our beliefs and experiences, we begin to fall back on learned behavior and past teachings. While that is what establishes our truth, it gets stale over time. For instance, my family and I recently attended a wedding. It was a dry wedding. Due to my past experience with non-alcohol weddings, I chalked it up to a religious belief. Whether it was or not, I learned that it was actually a special request from the bride and groom. It was their wish that every person attending their wedding would be present, and in the moment. Not only did those words debunk my speculation, they also reminded me of a simple lesson that is easily forgotten: be present in each moment. he pickle, also known as a gherkin, is the focus of our cover story. Whether you like them sweet or sour, pickles tend to add flair to a variety of food concoctions. Although they are quite good on their own, it seems they truly make their mark as a companion food. While cozying up to a sandwich, or adding a “je ne sais quoi” sort of flavor to a pate, the pickle adds pizzazz. The word pickle derives from the Dutch word “pekel,” which means brine. A traditional pickle is simply a cucumber that has gone through a “pickling” process. The cucumber soaks in a brine, vinegar or similar solution, and ferments or sours over time. Depending on the preferred flavor, one could add garlic, dill, mustard seed, peppers and salt, among other pickling spices. Try adding pickles to your tuna, potato or egg salad. Better yet, try adding a little pickle juice to the mix. Just make sure to watch your sodium intake, as sour pickles tend to contain quite a bit of salt. You can always nip the high sodium content in the bud by making pickles at home. There are many “how-to” recipes online that make “getting into a pickle” easy, and fun. HB

PURE OXYGEN ENHANCES THE HEALING PROCESS
September 2011
H
yperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing process and strengthens the immune system. The treatment takes place in a clear, acrylic chamber, and patients breathe 100 percent oxygen at pressures greater than sea level atmospheric pressure (the air we breathe contains only 21 percent oxygen). This pressurization allows for a higher concentration of oxygen to reach the tissues of the body, and accelerates the body’s natural healing process.
The FDA currently authorizes hyperbaric oxygen therapy for treatment of the following medical conditions: problem wounds such as from diabetes; bone infections; radiation tissue damage; compromised skin grafts and flaps; traumatic crush injuries; gas gangrene; so-called “flesh eating” infection; limb salvage, reattachment and amputations; carbon monoxide and cyanide poisoning and different types of diving injuries. The number of treatments depends on each patient’s specific injury, illness or condition. Toxic exposure patients (such as carbon monoxide) only need one to two treatments, while most wound-healing patients may require 30 to 40 treatments for maximum benefit. The average hyperbaric oxygen session lasts approximately 90 minutes. Patients allow an additional 30 minutes for preparation and departure time. Medicare, Medicaid and most commercial health insurance plans cover all the conditions listed above. The amount of treatment approved by insurance varies according to plan benefits.
Approved by the American Medical Association and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this form of therapy has been used for more than 30 years as a treatment for a variety of medical conditions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works to speed the body’s ability to heal itself. It does this by increasing the level of oxygen in the blood and by increasing the pressure within the chamber. Specifically, hyperbaric oxygen therapy can deliver oxygen directly to injured tissues; leads to the formation of new blood vessels; preserves damaged tissues; speeds the healing of wounds; reduces swelling; stimulates the formation of new bone tissue; and decreases the negative effects of toxic substances like carbon monoxide.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can speed the body’s ability to heal itself. Many conditions respond when conservative management has not worked. It is non-invasive, painless and may help in your condition. HB
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a non-invasive and painless treatment. Patients watch TV, listen to music, or simply rest during therapy sessions. Visible through the clear acrylic walls of the chamber, certified hyperbaric technologists are present throughout every step of the process and patients can speak to them at any time through a two-way intercom. As the eardrum responds to changes in pressure, patients may experience a sensation of fullness in the ears during certain stages of the treatment. The feeling is similar to the sensation felt while flying in an airplane. Before treatments begin, each patient listens to an introduction and treatment overview, including several easy methods for avoiding ear discomfort.

here’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.
Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment. HB

A LEADER in NEW TECHNIQUES for the Treatment of CHRONIC DEGENERATIVE DISEASES and CANCER
My Greatest Challenges as a Cancer treating Physician Written By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.
A
s an Integrative Physician treating cancer “outside the system,” or as we say “outside the box,” I feel that I have six major challenges facing me with every patient.
suppresses the immune system. It requires an attitude of “reversing victimhood” and helping the patient take charge of their healing.
The first is getting people to realize that there are possibilities for treating their disease other than what they have been offered by their conventional oncologist. Chemotherapy, radiation and surgery are presented as being the only options available to their patients. There are many other options but the patient must have the courage to say “there must be a better way” and must be willing to do some research in order to get more informed. The internet can be a great help in this regard, but the person must take the initiative to start. Most conventional oncologists will do their best to discourage people from even beginning this search.
The fifth is finding a way to help the patient stop their self sabotage and begin being a participant in their healing. It needs to become an active, not a passive, process or any gains made will only be temporary at best.
The second challenge is having people arrive at our clinic in a very advanced stage of their disease, or after having their immune systems almost completely destroyed by the widely accepted therapies using chemo and radiation.
If these challenges can be overcome, the patient can then begin the process of true healing. HB
The last big hurdle for many people is the cost of therapy. Since most of Integrative medical therapies are not covered by insurance, people must have the means to pay for the treatments. Many people find a way to do this once they realize how important it is to their long term health to not just accept the “party line” of chemo, radiation and surgery.
For more info, contact Reno Integrative Medical Center at (775) 829-1009 or visit online at www.renointegrativemedicalcenter.com.
The third is having a patient really excited about pursuing Integrative therapies, but encountering interference from well meaning family or friends. They also come to our clinic with many preconceived ideas Go online to read Robert A. Eslinger’s past articles. that interfere with their healing.

The fourth, having to work at reversing what we refer to as the “fear factor.” Many times, fear is even used as a tool to get a patient to go into conventional treatment. The problem is that fear triggers the sympathetic nervous system, commonly known as the “fight, flight or fright reaction,” and automatically

ike Cinderella, the lymph labors quietly in the shadows to clean up the mess made by virtually all the other systems of the body. Widely regarded as a lesser sister to the circulatory system, the lymphatic system is actually a crucial player in your body’s ability to ward off disease and heal from injury. The lymphatic system is recognized by doctors in Europe and the Far East for its importance to preventive health care. They understand how lymphatic function supports every other system in the body, including the immune, digestive, detoxification, and nervous systems. In fact, many believe that poor lymph health underlies a host of conditions, from cellulite to cancer. In contrast, our practitioners in America don’t think much about the lymph system until something goes wrong--usually when infection causes a swollen lymph node, or worse, when we develop cancer in a lymph gland, or cancer elsewhere that metastasizes through the lymph vessels. The reality is that you have twice as much lymph fluid in your body as blood. The lymph continuously bathes each cell and drains away the debris in a circulatory system powered only by your breathing and movement. If the movement of the lymph stopped entirely, you would die in a matter hours. The first thing to understand about your lymph system is its vast extent. Like the circulatory system that supplies blood, the network of lymph vessels serves almost every cell in your body. Lymph nodes are strung along the lymph vessels, serving as a series of cleaning filters. Lymphatic fluid percolates through the nodes, being purified and immunologically boosted at every stage.

With this brief overview, you can see how critical any blockage can impact your body. The Light Beam Generator (LBG) uses six different light, gas and electromagnetic pulsing therapies to deliver gentle, incoherent photonic light deep into the cells and lymph nodes, breaking up protein structures that block the lymph system from doing its very important job. The LBG achieves its results by rebalancing the electromagnetic charge that either binds cells together, or keeps them apart. Cells in the lymphatic system can clump together and bond electrically with water to create disease. By separating these cells from each other--and from their accumulated fluids--edema, tumor masses and other blockages are dispersed. The LBG also helps in removing unnatural additives from our food from the body, including steroids that mimic hormones and attach to proteins. These are just a few of the reasons Lymphatic Therapy, with the Light Beam Generator, are so important! HB

Lymph vessels and nodes are made of lymph tissue. One crucial function of lymph tissue is generating and storing white blood cells, the blood cells that fight infection. Besides the lymph nodes, principal lymph organs include the bone marrow (where white blood cells called B-lymphocytes are made), the spleen, tonsils, and the thymus gland (where T-cells are made).

Air Change Rates can be calculated with: n = 60 q / V
Do you want to improve the air you breath?
n = desired air change rate per hour q = changed air flow through the room (Cubic Feet per Minute, cfm) V = volume of the room (Cubic Feet) If you have an air purifier delivering 265 cfm of air to your office measuring 20 ft. x 15 ft. with 8 ft. ceilings (2,400 cubic feet), the air change rate would be calculated as follows:
Only $1.44 per day Catalytic PURE AIR Drastically Reduces: • Airborne Germs • Viruses • Allergy Triggers • Asthma Problems • Pet Dander • Second hand smoke • Mold Issues • Stale Air and Odors • Carbon Monoxide • Light Industrial Fumes
60 x 265 (cfm) / 2,400(volume of room) = 6.63 air changes per hour The air change rate is managed through natural and/or mechanical ventilation. Natural ventilation occurs when air moves through opened doors and windows by wind or temperature differences. Mechanical ventilation occurs when air handling systems or air purifiers change the air. A proper air exchange rate is vital for maintaining healthy indoor air.

items containing pollutants like asbestos, cleaning products, improperly maintained central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices.
here are many toxic indoor air environments needing our attention. Indoor air quality can be affected by microbial contaminants (mold, bacteria), gases (including carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds) and particulates (dust, dirt, pollen). With all of these pollutants, it’s no wonder indoor air is becoming more of a health hazard than outdoor air.
Additionally, when there isn’t an effective air change rate, (the rate indoor air is replaced or filtered in a defined space) indoor pollutant levels can increase. The volume of “changed” air required for proper indoor air quality is determined by the size and use of the space. The table below gives recommended air change rates (air changes per hour) in some common types of rooms and buildings:
These toxic environments affect our health with headaches, coughing, sneezing and trigger allergies and asthma. Since we spend 80 to 90 percent of our time indoors, poor indoor air quality in homes, offices, medical clinics, beauty salons, schools and hotels is a concern. Simply being aware, and using our noses to monitor when indoor air quality is poor, is a good start. Maintaining indoor air quality is a delicate process that can be affected by many variables. Indoor air pollution is caused by a long list of products and activities, including combustion sources, building materials made of pressed wood products,

The air change rate is very important because indoor pollutants can add up and create unhealthy indoor air. With buildings being built air tight for energy efficiency, often the air change rate is insufficient. There are measures one can take to restore poor air quality: Control the source of the pollution: Eliminate individual sources of indoor air pollution. This is low cost and effective. Improve ventilation: Increase your air change rate through simple actions such as opening windows more often. Properly utilize and maintain air treatment equipment: A well designed and maintained HVAC system and individual air purifiers can maintain an effective air change rate to remove indoor pollutants. Even with toxic indoor air we inhale everyday, having an effective air change rate will greatly improve indoor air quality and health of the occupants. Remember, a minimum of four air changes per hour for all indoor spaces is required for a healthy environment. The importance of a proper air change rate cannot be understated. Better indoor air makes us feel better, stay healthier and breathe easier. HB

Who’s Most At Risk?
This Year
People working with small hand tools in manufacturing and those using a computer keyboard on a regular basis are especially at risk. Women are two to five times more likely than men to develop CTS. It most commonly occurs in people ages 30 to 60 years old. CTS is associated with health conditions, such as Lyme disease, hypothyroidism, rubella, pregnancy, obesity, and menopause. High caffeine, tobacco or alcohol intake are also contributing risk factors.
Treatment Options: There are multiple ways to treat CTS. Some of these are: Drug therapies, Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Massage, Herbs/nutrition, and Surgery. We’ll focus on the chiropractic and nutritional aspects.
By having a Healthier Nervous System which controls everything; by making sure your brain and body’s communication systems are working at their optimum.
Chiropractic: CTS is commonly treated by chiropractors. The methods most chiropractors use to treat CTS include manipulation of the wrist, elbow, and upper spine, ultrasound therapy, and wrist supports.
C
arpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an injury caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist. The injury causes pain and numbness in the index and middle fingers and weakness of the thumb. Carpal tunnel receives its name from the eight bones in the wrist, called carpals, which form a “tunnel” through which the nerve leading to the hand extends. Fortunately, not all wrist pain should be called CTS. It is important to determine, if in fact, the symptoms are being caused by the pressure on the nerves of the wrist, or if there is a different cause of the problem. It is VERY common for these types of symptoms to exist when there is a neck misalignment, history of auto injury, or other spinal conditions. The nerves of the neck control all the nerves of our arms and hands. If the nerves of the neck are being compressed, wrist and hand pain is a common symptom. Your Doctor of Chiropractic is trained to determine whether your condition is a true carpal tunnel syndrome.
A study compared the effects of chiropractic care with conservative medical care (wrist supports and ibuprofen) among 91 people with CTS. Both groups experienced significant improvement in nerve function, finger sensation and comfort. The researchers concluded that chiropractic treatment and conservative medical care are equally effective for people with CTS.

Farming caused famine, or farming for the future?
The choice is ours to make.
Written By Lissie Lyles
15 years ago, China’s Loess Plateau, a region of 640,000 square kilometers in North Central China, seemed like a hopeless place. Poverty was rampant and the land had been stripped of its fertility by thousands of years of agricultural exploitation. Over-grazing by domestic live stock had stripped the hill tops of all vegetation, with no chance for young trees and shrubs to grow. When the rains came, instead of seeping into the earth, the rain washed down the hillsides, taking the top soil with it. Millions of tons of silt were swept into the Yellow river, impeding its flow and contributing to floods. In some areas, the silt built up so much that floating mud mattresses were created. In addition to this, during the dry season, the light and unprotected soil was swept into the winds, causing dust storms that extended far beyond China’s borders. It’s a process that can be seen over and over again throughout the world, and it becomes a vicious cycle of reduced crop yields, natural disasters and impoverished communities.
Part Three:
Restoring environments, restoring hope
Fifteen years ago, Chinese and International environmental experts began an experiment, to see if the damage in this region could be reversed. They worked with the citizens of the Loess Plateau; planting trees on the highest mountains, and limiting the areas that live stock were allowed to graze, making it possible for vegetation to thrive once again. The people dug slopes and terraces into the hill sides, designed to help the rain water move gradually down the hill, preventing run off. The results of these restoration efforts created dramatic improvements in the area.

upon. In other words, unsustainable farming practices will not continue, whether we choose to abandon them or not, because they simply cannot be supported by this planet forever. The urgent choice before us is whether or not to put to rest these unsustainable practices before our communities, and even our very lives, are destroyed in turn.
t is easy to feel overwhelmed and hopeless when contemplating the implications of our changing climate. Witnessing the increase in natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, mud slides, dust storms, tornadoes, tsunamis and the devastation they cause is disheartening to say the least. Sometimes, it appears as if there are no solutions, and that one’s own individual actions aren’t enough to create the kind of change necessary for a healthier planet.
Thankfully, there is a growing movement of new methods of relating to the land that could not only be sustained indefinitely, but improve the health of the ecosystem, increase the abundance of food for its inhabitants, and reduce the effects of climate change. The film “Hope in a Changing Climate,” presented by Open University, offers some stunning examples of how environmental restoration projects can create profound improvements in areas that were once suffering the consequence of unsustainable land use.
In the first two parts of this series, we discussed farming practices that have a negative effect on the land and its inhabitants, in short, agricultural practices that can be summed up as unsustainable. Contemplate the meaning of that word “unsustainable” for a moment. It means that something cannot go on the way it has been indefinitely. Why? Because it is destroying the very resources or conditions that it depends

The return of natural vegetation prevents the rain from running straight down the slopes; instead the rain is absorbed into the earth like a sponge, and slowly seeps through the irrigated fields and terraces below. There is a significant reduction in the amount of silt carried into the Yellow River. Restoration occurred over an area of 35,000 square kilometers, and the people of the Loess Plateau have seen much higher crop yields, a greater variety of local produce and follow up studies have shown that incomes rose, three-fold. As the vegetation returned and the top soil replenished, the amount of carbon in the air was reduced as well. Here is a method of farming that is beneficial to every being in that ecosystem. The people are enjoying greater abundance, while the land itself is thriving; everybody wins. Similar restoration efforts are now taking place in other parts of the world, with encouraging success stories starting to emerge from communities in Ethiopia and Rwanda as well. The film “Hope in a Changing Climate,” can be downloaded for free from I-tunes U. It is a must-watch film that documents the astounding potential of restoration projects such as these, which are changing lives for the better, and healing the land in a remarkably short period of time. Many of the farming practices used in these restoration projects could fall under the heading of what is known as Continued on Page 44

at the hospital in February and reports that patients and doctors have been very satisfied with the results. She states that there have been fewer instances of failed or cancelled Colonoscopies due to prep intolerances.
n 2008, Danbury Hospital in Connecticut became the first hospital in the nation to begin using Colon Hydrotherapy as a preparation for Colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of the most predominate cancers in North America, with more than 143,000 new cases last year according to The National Cancer Institute; yet is easily detected and in most cases treated by a successful colonoscopy. With that said, you would think folks over 50 would be lined up to be screened. Yet many people avoid Colonoscopy due to the severe results of the liquid prep that they are required to drink. Barton Health Gastroenterologist, Dr. Daniel Norman reports experiencing one to two cancellations a week due to intolerance of the preparation, out of the 30 or so colonoscopies he performs weekly.
Colon Hydrotherapy:
Protocol does vary regarding the number of colonics that should be done prior to Colonoscopy. Some recommendations are for three consecutive Colon Hydrotherapy sessions with the third session being the day of the procedure. Other recommendations call for only two sessions, and recommend the addition of laxatives such as Miralax. Clearly as the practice of using colonics as a medial prep develops, more studies will be done and eventually there will be a mainstream protocol. For now, anyone who is interested in using Colon Hydrotherapy instead of chemicals to prepare for bowel or gastric procedures should discuss this option with their physician. HB
Colon Hydrotherapy is a method of bowel cleansing using warm, purified water introduced into the colon via a speculum inserted into the rectum. A series of fills and releases serves to hydrate the body while removing the bowel contents via flowing water. Barton Hospital reports that Colon Hydrotherapy has shown to be more effective and better tolerated than the standard methods of bowel preparation for colonoscopy.
References: 1. www.BartonHealth.org 2. www.DotoloResearch.com 3. www.DanburyHospital.org
According to Dr. Joseph Fiorito of Danbury Hospital, “Colon Hydrotherapy is much more convenient [than using the conventional prep].” People don’t have to worry about missing work, having to not eat for extended periods of time, or being kept up all night with diarrhea. He also states that using Colon Hydrotherapy versus traditional prep is beneficial to the elderly and ill patients who are more likely to suffer to electrolyte abnormalities and kidney damage from drinking harsh chemical laxatives.

While Colon Hydrotherapy is currently a popular enhancement to diets, cleanses and an important aid in helping people detoxify their bodies by removing impacted fecal matter from the bowel, it is slowly becoming recognized by the medical community as a valid preparation for Colonoscopy. Protocol is currently being established for other treatment and diagnostic procedures such as Sigmoidoscopy and Barium Enema. Studies show colonics can reduce problems with bowel function associated with general anesthesia following surgery.

I declined the surgery, and nothing else seemed to work. I did notice that I would go through periods of improved symptoms relative to my dietary intake, but I could not pin down the exact food culprits, as I did not have the understanding of the complexities of the gut to do so.
have personally experienced bowel problems my entire life. I was first diagnosed with a pyloric stenosis at five weeks old, and this required surgery to repair. During my childhood years there were many foods I simply could not eat without experiencing a myriad of what were, in retrospect, intestinal related symptoms. During the 4th grade, I vomited every morning at about 10am for two to three months--until my dad accidently changed my diet. In my teen years, I experienced ulcers and moderate to severe acid indigestion again. Throughout my high school and college years, I experienced a diagnosis of irritable bowel disease (IBD), ulcerative colitis (in which six feet of my bowel was to be removed), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bloating after meals, burping/belching, B12, anemia, chronic heartburn, stomach pain and cramps day and night, alternating constipation and diarrhea, food allergies, dry skin, sinus congestion, mood swings and other symptoms that baffled standard medical model approach, as it was thought these were a wide variety of unrelated dysfunctions I had.
The years went on and my symptoms gradually became more frequent and more severe. It is partly for this reason that the new paradigms of functional medicine, functional neurology and functional endocrinology began to interest me. While involved in the gastrointestinal assessment and evaluation module of the Functional Diagnostic Medicine Training program, my conditions and symptoms were reviewed for me regularly. But in addition to IBD/IBS and colitis, there were words and conditions like hypochlorhydria (too little, not enough, acid), H pylori, food allergies, gluten and grain sensitivities, bowel dysbiosis,

introduce them to a powerful method of healing, before he prescribes anything else. After experiencing those sounds for the first time, many patients purchase their own singing bowls for use during meditation at home. Dr. Gaynor has achieved excellent results by teaching his patients how to combine meditation, guided imagery and the sounds of the singing bowls with some mainstream cancer treatments.
protects the immune system, fights invading pathogens and helps to regenerate injured tissues. Dr. Mitchell Gaynor (oncologist) and Dr. Jeffrey Thompson completed pioneering studies proving the positive effects of the sounds of Tibetan singing bowls. Dr. Thompson translated his research into powerful treatments for learning disabilities, as well as a wide range of physical disorders.
Gradually, modern science is discovering what the ancients have always known--that certain sounds have a powerfully positive effect on healing ailments of all kinds, whether one uses toning, chanting, drumbeats, the Hemi-Sync technology, crystal or Tibetan singing bowls, or traditional music therapy. There are many artists who focus on the use of toning, music and sound, specifically for healing. Also, organizations dedicated to healing through sound and music can be found on the Internet. Some of these healers, books and websites are mentioned in the reference section below. HB
In Dr. Gaynor’s book The Healing Power of Sound, he explains that the concept of song goes far beyond just musical content for the Aborigines, the indigenous people of Australia whose creation stories date back almost 150,000 years. He also mentions that ancient Indian holy men understood what modern science has since proven: that the entire cosmos is “an ocean of vibration, the source of all manifestation,” and “The essence of word and sound is OM, a sound so powerful that its utterance alone can bring enlightenment.” Shamans, who were considered mediators between the natural world and the spiritual realm, were among the very earliest people to use sound-based rituals for healing. The drumbeat, as used by the shaman, actually has transformative effects. Scientists found that shamanic-style drumming creates an altered activity in many sensory and motor areas of the brain; because, the many frequencies within a single drumbeat can stimulate numerous neural pathways.
E
verything is vibrating. Quantum physics proves that everything has its own vibrational frequency: every color, every sound and every solid object. Even the organs in our body have their own frequencies.
Dr. David Simon, Medical Director of the Chopra Center for Well-Being, explains that healing chants and music have a measurable effect on our bodies. The frequencies from chants are chemically metabolized into natural opiates that act as internal painkillers, as well as healing agents.
The Monroe Institute created almost a hundred different CDs to assist in well being and healing. The technology is called Hemi-Sync, which stands for hemispheric synchronization. These are audio guidance CDs to help safely alter brainwaves, and they consist of multilayered patterns of sound frequencies. When the brain hears these sounds, it responds by producing a third sound (called a binaural beat) that encourages the desired brainwave activity. This assists healing during surgery, as well as recuperation after surgery. Some of the CDs are designed to help one enter a deep meditative state, or to go to sleep easily and rest peacefully through the night; or, to increase concentration and/or focus attention when studying.
Dr. Mark Rider, a research psychologist from Southern Methodist University has done a large number of studies proving that the powerfully positive influence of music combined with imagery
Dr. Gaynor, a practicing oncologist, uses the sounds of crystal bowls, or Tibetan singing bowls, on a patient’s first visit, to
Research shows that sound is “heard” not only through our ears, but through every cell in our body. As a result, chanting can synchronize brain waves to achieve profound states of relaxation. Many healers, holistic practitioners and even some medical doctors, including oncologists, believe that healing can be achieved by restoring the normal vibratory frequency of the dis-harmonious (and therefore diseased) part of the body by music and by certain specific sounds.

hen I was a kid, fruit snacks were like currency at the school lunch table. If you had them, you would be begged to share, and could often swap these sweet, gummy, fruity treats for other sugary goodies. While the fruit snacks I enjoyed were laden with corn syrup, artificial flavors and dyes, the market today is abundant in “natural” fruit snacks. These are yet another food product marketed to parents promising a healthy, yet sweet treat to include in their kid’s lunch pail. As usual, the words “all natural” on the label of a food product should not be taken at face value. Let’s look closer at the labels of a few of these products and see what we find.
Ingredients: Organic tapioca syrup, organic cane sugar, organic tapioca syrup solids, organic white grape juice concentrate, pectin, citric acid, ascorbic acid, colors (turmeric, black carrot juice concentrate, annatto), Natural flavors, sodium citrate, organic sunflower oil, carnauba wax (from palm leaves). Pros: Most ingredients are organic, suitable for vegans and gluten free folk. No corn syrup or toxic ingredients. Cons: This product still contains a lot of sugar. Not only does it contain added cane sugar, but it contains tapioca syrup and fruit juice concentrates. As we learned in last month’s article about juice in a box, concentrated fruit juice is very high in fructose, a sugar that is implicated in the cause of many sugarrelated diseases such as diabetes. Grapes naturally have high sugar content anyway, so when they are concentrated, the sugar levels sky rocket. The waxes and oils in this product will also make this snack difficult to digest, especially when consumed at the end of a meal.
Florida’s Natural Nuggets: Ingredients: Orange Ingredients: Fruit Juice and Puree From Concentrate (Pear Puree From Concentrate, Pear Juice From Concentrate, Orange Juice From Concentrate (Natural Source of Vitamin C), Sugar, Tapioca Starch, Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Citric Acid, Tricalcium Phosphate, Natural Orange Flavor, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Sodium Citrate, Pectin, Ferric Phosphate, Niacinamide, Zinc Oxide, Purple Carrot Extract, Carnauba Wax, Vitamin A Acetate, Maltodextrin, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1). make this treat with just one type of fruit, as mixing too many fruits together not only spikes the sugar content, but makes them harder to digest. These homemade treats can be made with organic ingredients, and are certain to be fresher than the pre-packaged products at the store. They do not need any added sugars, waxes or vitamin fortification to be considered healthy. Every once in a while, an organic fruit snack product, that does not contain corn syrup, would not be an unhealthy addition to the diet. However, daily consumption of sugary foods, such as these aforementioned food products, is not recommended. There are plenty of fresh fruits that satisfy the desire for something sweet while providing the body with a proper balance of necessary vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Choose food over food products, and choose your food products wisely. HB
Pros: Contains some ingredients that originally came from fruit; gluten free and suitable for vegans. Cons: Way too much sugar! Contains cane sugar, fruit juice concentrate AND corn syrup. Corn syrup is a sweetener best avoided all together, as there is mounting evidence that shows its contribution to a host of degenerative diseases. The long ingredient list, and its host of hard to pronounce ingredients, should serve as red flags.

Stepping Out Of The Man Box
Curry Leaf

irls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots, ‘cause it’s OK to be a boy, but for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, ‘cause you think that being a girl is degrading.” –The Cement Garden.
urraya koenigii, or curry leaf, is an aromatic leaf commonly used in Southern Indian cuisine. Not all curries come from a single source, such as a leaf. Many common curries, such as yellow, green or red, are actually a combination of many spices, and often do not contain the curry leaf at all.
Within the United States, the social expectations of what it means to “be a woman” or to “be a man” reside in two very distinct black and white boxes. Each box holds certain behaviors, which are socially appropriate for men and women to adhere by. Obviously, these expectations have a profound influence on our sexuality and generate certain behaviors. Through stereotypical gender roles, we are socialized to glorify masculinity and degrade femininity within our society. What happens when these roles are embraced? Tony Porter recently gave a speech on Ted.com tilted “A Call to Men,” where he stated, “See collectively, we as men are taught to have less value in women, to view them as property and the objects of men. We see that as an equation that equals violence against women.”
The curry leaf is part of an evergreen shrub, or small sub-tropical tree, native to India. They are also sometimes referred to as “sweet neem leaves” because they are similar in appearance to the leaves of the neem tree. The tree grows to be about six feet tall. It produces small white flowers that have a fragrance reminiscent of jasmine. These flowers later become small black, shiny berries that are edible; however, the seeds of the fruit are poisonous. The leaves are popular seasoning in southern and west-coast Indian cooking, in addition to the cuisine of Sri Lanka. The leaves loose much of their flavor and aromatic qualities when dried, so they are best used fresh. They are used in much the same way as bay leaves, usually fried along with onions in the early stages of meal preparation. They are frequently used in Southern Indian vegetarian dishes, mulligatawny, and Madras and Tamil Nadu curries.
The United States has the highest incidence of rape of all Western nations and the Centers for Disease Control reports that men’s violence against women is the number one health concern for women in the U.S. and abroad. Why? Anthropologist Dr. Sanday compared the incidences of rape in 95 societies. Her research indicated that the frequency of rape was influenced most by the nature of the relations between the sexes, the status of women, and the attitudes that boys acquire during their developmental years. Her studies further demonstrated that “rape-prone” societies tolerate and glorify masculine violence, encourage boys to be aggressive, view physical force as natural and exemplary, demean the role of women in economic and political aspects of life, and avoid “women’s work,” such as raising children and household chores.
In Ayurvedic Medicine, the bark, leaves and roots of the tree are used as a tonic. The leaves and root are taken for their circulation boosting, sedative and anti-inflammatory actions. The leaf is high in iron, and the bark has been used to treat menstrual troubles. The curry leaves are also known to be good for the hair, keeping it healthy and strong.
Does this sound familiar? Within the United States, we teach males that being aggressive and forceful is the winning formula for how to “be a man.” Inevitably, many men struggle against the paradigm of “macho” conditioning (strong, independent, virile and dominant) and are socialized to be unemotional. The fear of being labeled a “sissy” drives the healthy expression of emotions deep within, left to fester. Strict adherence to these gender roles confines the way we express our sexuality; therefore, challenging these gender roles and questioning what it really means to “be a man” should be embraced. HB

It means longer lasting sexual intimacy, more connected relationships with oneself, as well as others, and an incredible ability to transmute sexual energies to open to more love in your life. Tantra yoga is a practice that will enable you to learn more about your sexuality and your spirituality.

Classes are divided between White Tantra (solo yoga practices) and Red Tantra (partner yoga practice). There is no nudity or touching of the genitals in class (however, it is a part of the homework assignment). The discussions, questions and the presentations are frank, honest and explicit; an absolute must in a class of this type. One cannot teach someone about ecstatic sex without talking about equipment and techniques. Sex is discussed in detail, and its place in relationships is clear. it, feel it, move it, and enjoy it. Charles encourages everyone to bring God (or spirit, or whatever your beliefs are) with you, into the bedroom, while also honoring the feminine and the inner child in each of us. One of the major topics of the weekend is teaching about the female “sacred spot,” (known by some as the “G-spot”) and how to access it. This erogenous zone has been largely neglected in Western sexual culture.
If you want to transform your sex life and your entire relationship, take this weekend seminar. This is a safe and enjoyable place to be introduced to the possibilities of healing and connection that ecstatic sex can offer you and your relationship. You won’t regret it!
For the female sacred spot homework preparation, lots of time is devoted to questions, and students are encouraged to share their feelings and concerns. The next day, participants are invited to share their experience of the homework. Charles’ casual style and open and generous personality allows participants to feel honored and truly safe.
Source School of Tantra Yoga’s Beginner Weekend Workshop will be in Reno, NV September 23-25, 2011 at the Gerber Medical Clinic, 1225 Westfield Ave. There will be an introductory PUJA on September 22, 2011 at Gerber Medical Clinic. Charles will be teaching with Lisa A. Rizzoli, Advanced Certified Tantra Educator. For more information and to register, please visit our website www. sourcetantra.com.
During the seminar, so many important facts are presented. Of even greater value during the weekend: Charles’ wisdom, attitude, encouragement, support, enthusiasm and love of the

Gardening
Unlike fruit trees, grapes won’t heal after you prune them, so care has to be taken not to leave a wound that might allow pathogens in. Partially because of this, grapes are subject to a variety of fungal diseases. Many of these diseases can be prevented by properly disposing of pruned branches and general cleanliness. Pests include several varieties of caterpillars, leaf-hoppers, and mites. Organic controls are available for many of these pests, and lady-bugs, dragonflies, and wasps can help with control. Dixie is a wise friend, so she chose for me two varieties that will do well here in the high desert. We need grapes that can stand short seasons, cold winters, hot summers, alkali, and drought. Most reputable nurseries know and carry well-adapted species and can help you select a grape that will suit your needs, whether you’re after wine or fruit.
M
Grape Juice trellis using the pantyhose. Sure enough, they didn’t pinch, the way the garden twine I used before did. I had to prune off a bit of vine that broke where the wind abraded it against the support.
y friend Dixie made me a gift of two grape vines, and a few days later, she stopped by to check up on them. Dixie is a teacher, and realizes the importance of monitoring a wayward pupil. She approved my efforts, and we moved to the shade for a chat.
Dixie has seen me searching for my reading glasses often enough to know my organizational skills, or lack thereof, so she told me I should remember where I put my pruners because I’d need them this winter to prune the grapes.
“You know,” she said, “you could use some support. I recommend panty hose. They’ll keep things up where they belong.” “Nobody wears pantyhose these days,” I countered.
Many grape varieties are vigorous growers, and some very old vines can cover the better part of an acre. It takes lots of room and careful management to keep a vine of that size in order. Grapes produce on wood from the previous year, and if too much of the previous year’s wood is left, the crop will be heavier than the vine can feed, resulting in small, sour grapes. Some experts recommend pruning off up to ninety percent of the year’s growth.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I have some I can give you that would be perfect for your needs. They’d allow for growth, and wouldn’t pinch tender limbs. Plus, they’re nearly invisible.” “I don’t care how they look,” I mumbled, “and you’ll never convince me they don’t pinch. Thanks, but I’m not interested.” I didn’t say it, but I knew I’d never fit into anything Dixie wore. I’m not sure what size she wears, but I think it’s not much more than the square root of mine.
There are lots of different ways to train grapes. Growers will need to take into account their own skill level, growing conditions, and their own preferences in determining how to prune. Not surprisingly, the easiest methods don’t result in the highest yield. The Internet or the local county extension office can give you information on methods of pruning.
A day later she stopped by with a batch of old knee-highs. I’d cobbled together a trellis with steel t-posts and willow branches for the vines, and Dixie showed me how to tie the vines to the
Although some sources I consulted suggest grapes are “heavy feeders,” in trials, UNR included a small amount of fertilizer at planting, and none thereafter, with excellent results. After all, grapes grow in Greece, which is scarcely known for its fertile soil. Just to be on the safe side, I mulched mine with manure, as I did the four vines I planted previously. Which brings me to the one thing I know about grapes for sure-they are tough. I planted those four grapevines three springs ago. I gave them a little supplemental water, but they didn’t seem to be doing much. The next spring, when nothing came up, I ignored them, except for trying to pull out one of the protruding stalks. It didn’t give, so I added “dig up grape plants” to my steadily growing to-do list. Then in mid-June, three of the vines popped up out of bonedry ground: a Candice, a Himrod, and another variety. Only the fourth, a type that’s marginal in our area, died. This year, their third summer in the ground, the Candice, which is the least vigorous, is growing nicely, and the other two will give me a few little bunches of grapes. Despite its unfortunate name, Himrod will be my best producer. It is an excellent grape for our area. So are the two that Dixie brought me. If the Thompson Seedless she gave me performs up to expectations, I may have to take up wearing pantyhose. Fifteen Doctors of Integrative & Naturopathic MedicineTell You How Reviewed for Healthy Beginnings by June Milligan, M.Ed., CCHt
Written by Andy Drymalski, EdD

medicine is holistic because it’s based upon the idea that all systems of the body are interconnected: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.
n this long-awaited book, fifteen cancer doctors from five countries share the information and results of their integrative treatments. If you are searching for an alternative to conventional cancer treatment, health care journalist Connie Strasheim has done all the work for you. She conducted extensive interviews, with these highly regarded doctors, and then organized the information into easy-to-read chapters. These particular physicians were chosen for inclusion on the basis of their expertise, and experience in treating cancer. It’s like having a one-on-one conversation with fifteen cancer specialists who have decided the mainstream cancer treatments leave much to be desired, and have spent years working with alternate approaches.
Dr. Eslinger explains what cancer is and what causes it. He believes that, “In many ways, cancers are just adaptations to different stressors that people experience in their lives, either early on or within approximately two years prior to their developing a tumor. So cancer is driven by the subconscious mind, and it’s the body’s attempt to adapt to something.” He explains the strategies he uses for mind-body healing, including a therapy called Psych-K, which uses bio-kinesiology, or muscle testing, along with affirmations, to communicate directly with the subconscious mind in order to alter its beliefs. He states that ninety nine percent of his patients with cancer experience a state of “fight or flight,” which is counterproductive for anyone with cancer; because during that response, the immune and digestive systems periodically shut down. He recommends certain CDs so that patients can reverse that fight/ flight response. He also utilizes the research and techniques from HeartMath, which is a biofeedback tool.
All aspects of treatment are covered, from anti-cancer remedies and immune system support, to dietary and lifestyle choices. This book also offers unique insights into healing, such as possible emotional causes of cancer, pros and cons of different treatments, and how to intelligently use chemotherapy. Also included are helpful insights for the friends and families of those who are coping with this challenge. Cancer treatment is complex and controversial, and this book puts the treatment information you need in the palm of your hand.
Dr. Eslinger’s primary treatment approach has six components, including boosting immune function, using Bio-Oxidative therapies, intravenous vitamin C, Laetrile, Insulin Potentiation Therapy, and the MEAD analysis device for balancing the body’s Acupoint Meridians. Adjunct treatments are Biophotonic Therapy, Revici Remedies, Poly-MVA Supplement, Heavy Metal Chelation, Detoxification and Grounding Therapy.
The following topics are explored: Fifteen different anti-cancer treatments, targeted at eliminating cancer cells and tumors; information on how to support and heal the body during and after cancer treatments; factors that affect healing, including finances, lifestyle habits, and psycho-emotional stress; how to prevent cancer in the first place; information on why medical politics have limited people’s access to effective treatments; dangerous or ineffective approaches; suggestions of how family and friends can help; and how to heal past trauma.
Dr. Eslinger uses a total mind-body approach, and says, “Don’t just swallow everything that your oncologist tells you!” One of the biggest roadblocks to healing is people not being able to make the leap into thinking, “There must be a better way,” he says (when no authority figure tells them that there is a better way). He also believes, “There’s a lot of information on the Internet, so don’t be afraid to do your own research, and don’t be just another sheep going into the chemo kitchen.”
Joseph Mercola, founder of the world’s most visited natural health site, www.mercola.com says, “Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., and most conventional treatments are tragically ineffective and counterproductive… this book will provide you with a valuable perspective that you will likely not hear from your oncologist.” Dr. Robert Eslinger, Head Physician of the Reno Integrative Medical Center, is one of the doctors featured in this book. He focuses on a specialty known as biological medicine, which combines older and more natural traditional treatments with modern technology, and uses therapeutic measures to strengthen and balance the body. The primary goal of biological medicine is to promote maximum self-healing. Biological

t is not easy to be an individual. You face pressures in life-from family, peers, or society--to think in certain ways and value the things that others do. When you feel insecure about yourself, it is tempting to conform to others’ expectations, to blend in and become one of the herd. You may believe there is safety in numbers. Unfortunately, following the well-paved path leads only to where others have been, and not necessarily to where you are meant to be. It is possible to live life, without ever living your life.
core of your being and the seed of your individuality. It guides you on your journey of growth, drawing you ever closer to your destiny and God. Your soul engages you in the mystery, trials, and joy of life, helping you to become a person of character, integrity and substance. To be an individual is to be a servant of your soul and God. This path alone guides you to your true home and place in the universe. When you commit yourself to the service of your soul you make yourself a unique expression of God’s love and creativity. When your soul becomes a pulsing, living reality to you, when you know that you are accountable to it more than anything else in this world, then you will be on the path of becoming an individual.
You have a destiny, and that destiny is to become the unique individual you were created to be. If you bring nothing more to the table of life than the pre-packaged thoughts and attitudes of those around you, what have you really contributed? But if your thoughts and values flow from the depths and truth of your own being, you give to the world the rarest gift you can. You give your true self.

IBS/IBD and Colitis
CHRONIC PAIN?
My Travels through the Bowels Written By: Dr. Martin Rutherford DC Continued from Page 22 intestinal hyperpermability (leaky gut), bacterial pathogens, parasites, yeast, fungus, Candida and Celiac disease, being discussed at great length. In the functional neurological models, it pointed out that one or more of the six concussions I experienced in early life may have been playing a part in exacerbating my symptoms, or causing additional and new diagnostically confusing symptoms for the medical doctors to ascertain. It turns out that the brain is the single most overlooked cause of many metabolic conditions-most prominent of which can be bowel symptoms. It turns out that the autonomic part of the brain (the automatic part that controls heart beat, breathing, blood pressure, gut functions, and more) can--and for me did--play a huge part in gut problems that are generally diagnosed as IBS/IBD and Colitis. If that brain system causes an abnormal chronic slow down of your gut, you experience symptoms that increase gut motility (diarrhea), up gastric secretions (and indigestion), up HCL production (heartburn/ulcers) and more. If the sympathetic system increases, it causes again the opposite effect on your gut--trust me on this--and decreases gut motility (constipation), decreases gastric and intestinal secretions (poor digestion, malabsorbtion of nutrients, malnutrition, and more. If you experience vacillation between both, you will experience alternating constipation and diarrhea…all because of the brain! Who knew?

The gut is complex. There are a complex set of multiple factors that must be assessed in an orderly fashion to determine exactly which factors are involved in creating that patient’s individual symptoms. The mantra of the Functional Medicine doctor is to treat the patient, not the diagnosis, and that is the key to success. IBS/IBD and colitis certainly exist--but the complex variety of causes is different for every patient. Success rests in proper testing (leading to proper non-drug methods of treatment) and patient follow through on recommendations. HB

The world of the healthy gut, especially considering the gut/ brain connection, is highly complex. It requires proper brain function to the area, proper amounts of acid, digestive enzymes, pancreatic enzymes, gallbladder function, liver function, bacterial flora (not too much, not too little), a proper gut wall that doesn’t leak, and an absence of inflammation and food allergies. Not such a simple feat to accomplish in today’s world of stress (which affects the above mentioned autonomic nerve function) and contaminated food supplies. Now, after going through a complete functional medicine workup, it was found that an upper brain stem (autonomic nervous system) was firing too much, alternating with too little. I had too little hydrochloric acid. I had a celiac diagnosis, for which absence of gluten is the only treatment; but more than that, I had a leaky gut and numerous allergies to common foods that were causing me to not respond well to just removing gluten from my diet. My test showed an abnormal imbalance of bacteria, but not yeast, Candida, coysackle virus, or parasitic problems, contrary to what I had believed prior to learning the organized approach to chronic bowel diagnosis.
Do you suffer from:
The proper measures have been implemented, per the above findings relative to dietary changes, food restrictions, supplementation, etc. I have experienced a 95 percent resolution of all of the symptoms mentioned above. In addition, the brain fog, memory problems, and general body aches I experienced and never connected to gut dysfunction, are essentially gone as long as I follow the proper protocols.

ASTROLOGY
ASTROLOGICAL OUTLOOK vital, life-giving ideas in a time of profound change Written By Eric Francis
Horoscope for Health | September - 2011
T
he Virgo New Moon in late August sets the tone for September. The Sun and Moon align with two different goddesses--one being Venus (the bright planet that will soon be visible in the evening sky) and the other being Isis (an asteroid, and the alignment is precise). There is a receptive, intelligent energy in the air, use it wisely; listen before you speak and remember to keep your mind in the on position. Mercury has just finished being retrograde (that began August 2) and will take until mid-month to work out. I suggest you still be cautious with investments, purchases and commitments for another week or two. The Full Moon is the 12th of the month and equinox is the 23rd. think with your feelings, when the situation called for rational thought--and it still does. I suggest you take one clear step at a time. Proceed with the sensation of reassembling something about yourself that has come apart. You might want to start with where you live. Cleaning and organizing your home will be a grounding experience. Cancer (June 21-July 22) The confidence we get from aggression is similar to the feeling of being a fantastic driver when you’re drunk. Therefore, I suggest you cultivate your confidence some other way, for example, by listening and thinking. I realize this is not macho, but then, neither are you. The moment you open up to your feelings, you’re likely to be aware of a sense of injury that’s been following you around for a while. You can’t defend yourself against this, but you can take in the wisdom and humility that it has to offer. We would have little need for growth, were there not something to grow out of, and more meaningfully, something to grow into. The story of your life, in a phrase, is balancing your intellect with your feelings. They don’t have to conflict, but that’s a premise, you have to challenge yourself. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) Perhaps if we weren’t taught to judge ourselves from the first days of our lives, we might actually know when we’re doing it. I suggest that you figure this out: become vigilant about when you’re scrutinizing yourself, particularly if you notice it’s becoming obsessive. You might want to pause and ask yourself a simple question: is what I’m telling myself true? Do these ‘facts’ check out? Negative emotions and mental patterns tend to be a cover-up for something else; that something may be a quality about yourself you feel will threaten others. I suggest you bring out that aspect of yourself and share it boldly with the world. Take the chance. If you notice yourself experiencing fear, address that directly.
Aries (March 20-April 19) So much of life comes back to confidence, and this may be the thing you seem to be lacking the most. A series of trials have left you wondering what you’re really capable of, and why the world seems to resist your best efforts. But I would ask--are you really doing that badly? Have recent setbacks set you back at all, or have they firmed up your commitment and desire to proceed? I suggest you focus on the work at hand rather than worrying about the score of the game as you imagine it to be. A little extra effort, embarked on with faith and a sense of service, will lead to some increasing momentum of success. This will in turn give you the sense of progress that you’ve been missing. Trusting yourself is a conscious act. Taurus (April 19-May 20) I think you need to figure out how much of life is an experiment. It’s not based on a formula, and relatively little is about confirmed knowledge. This may uproot your preconceived ideas about any situation you find yourself in, which would be a healthy step in the direction of an actual encounter with the unknown. It’s not until you admit you’re in such an encounter that you can actually learn something. Not knowing is the predecessor of learning. So work on your mental flexibility, and catch yourself when you’re either obsessing over, or disappointed by, expectations. Notice when you’re curious, and better still, notice how good it feels to act on your curiosity. Pay attention to what happens when you do. Gemini (May 20-June 21) The creation of ideas is not an especially neat process. There is a lot of trial and error involved, and it’s not just theoretical. You seem to be coming through a phase of making up your mind about something close to your heart. You may regret expending so much emotional energy; you may feel like you weren’t fair to others, nor to yourself. The reason for that is you were trying to

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) You can afford to let go of your doubts. You would also be wise to toss the notion that your reality has no validity, until others say you fit in with theirs. That’s never going to work as a metric, unless you’re going for network television. Indeed, you may need to rub up against others who don’t share your views until you work your way into different territory. If you haven’t already figured this out, I suggest that you do this waterstyled rather than fire-styled. Be gently persistent, rather than demanding. Approach people and situations where potential disagreements exist from a cool place rather than a hot one. Be calm and direct; the heat you’re carrying will do the work from the inside. Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) If you look deeper than the surface, you will figure out how good your life really is. That’s the key. Developments taking place now are like seeds being planted for some of the benefits and improvements you want to make the most dearly, and these will require patience. It’s true that from the outside, or judging from certain day-to-day affairs in recent weeks, you might not think you’re getting very far. If you look at any one aspect of your existence, it might not match what the advertisement promised. However, I can assure you that you’re making progress toward any goal you can name specifically. And as someone once wrote, you will soon discover how many small things add up to a lot. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) You cannot push your faith or your beliefs on others, and you don’t have to. You seem to have learned this the hard way the past month or so, but you still have good opportunities to take the information on board. It’s not a far stretch to consider that you might do so only if you doubt yourself, but I’m wondering what the source of those doubts might be. The mere act of comparing yourself to others, such as assessing who is more successful, will lead to doubt no matter what the outcome of your assessment. If you try to blame someone for your shortcomings, you may be right, but that won’t help. Whatever you may feel, I can pretty much assure you that people in your environment look up to you. That might not be so meaningful if they didn’t have good reasons for doing so. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) Not long ago, a career meant you stayed with one company nearly forever, ending up with a gold watch, a retirement and a pension. Now the key to a career is adaptability, and being able to move as quickly as your environment--perhaps even a little faster. Information comes from two places, your external environment and what your mind assembles and creates from what you take in. In planning your next move, I suggest you look in a diversity of places for your information. But you are the missing link that makes it meaningful. You are the one who notices what the information adds up to, and you decide the value that it has for you. This is an intuitive leap. There may not be direct sources to which you can footnote your observations, though I suggest you do your best.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) This latest bout with unusual internal pressure is starting to wane with the summer heat. I wish I could explain in a few words the diversity of ways that you’re trying to burst open, but the key is understanding that you’re experiencing the drive to change as pressure, and potentially as a state verging on crisis. At the moment that condition is easing off, and you have more flexibility and freedom. I suggest you stretch into that a little, but remain mindful of the changes you want to make, and the actions you want to take to get there. At the moment you have an easy opening to fulfill one of your most precious long-term plans. It may not be the thing you want to do the most now, but I suggest you take the opportunity while you have it. Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) The more you work out the details of a shared arrangement, the better it will work for you. So focus on the fine points, but mostly, focus on the overall goal and notice how you’re getting there. I suggest you maintain a method of going a little at a time, for all forms of progress--including the human contact element, the way you negotiate potential differences, and how you take them as creative opportunities. Remember that the key is incremental progress, and seeing where the aspects of a situation relate to one another. This is different from a sweeping kind of solution, or the sense of dramatically jumping to a new level, lending itself to covering the subtle points much more consciously. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) Pay attention to who you meet this month; follow up with anyone who seems interesting. I say this recognizing that you may have come through an unstable or unpredictable phase in your relationships, but at least it wasn’t lacking for adventure--and you have plenty of that mojo left. What your charts suggest is that a new point of contact is opening up with someone. It’s the take-it-gently kind of association, so maintain a balance between keeping your focus and taking a laidback approach. I suggest that you know who you’re talking to at all times, and if you don’t know, find out. Your curiosity will be regarded as sincere interest, and your emotional openness as availability. Listen and feel for these same qualities in others. HB

THE HEALTHY ADVENTURER
KIDSCORNER Written By Ariana Purcell
S
“Dear Dawn,
chool started in August for me, and this year I am at a new school. I was so nervous at first, to make all new friends and try to fit in. On my first day, I walked to school and asked a teacher where I needed to go for my first class; she showed me the way. The day was not as bad as I thought it would be. I ended up really liking all of my teachers and classes. The new school I go to now is a lot different than my old school. My old school was a kindergarten through eighth grade school, so the middle school was connected to the elementary school. There, we only had two classes of seventh graders, so we never really switched classes. At this new school, I switch classes every period, and each switch of the period, I am with all new people. I have new kinds of classes, and have to remember what rooms I switch to. We also have to change into our P.E. clothes for P.E. class, and we have a girl’s locker room. At my old school, we did not have to change and we didn’t have locker rooms. I have a locker now, so I can put my books somewhere when I switch classes as well.
I began my healthy adventures in 1990. By combining bicycling, kayaking and hiking, I would eventually travel four times around the earth. I am 70 years old and have not been sick since 1972. It is never too late to live a healthy, active and adventuresome life, as you will read in a series of articles.
Kayaking through Siberia, Part 9 Would the remaining camera, CD player, short wave radio, cell phone, flashlights, etc. be ruined? How about my documents and paperwork? Soiled? If I had only stored the sleeping bag and extra clothes in a Ziploc bag! Everything was dripping when I spread it out on some rocks. The rain had no pity on me and made sure that everything was soaked. To make matters more exciting, darkness was approaching. Finally, I succeeded to turn the boat over, so the water could run out. There was nothing further to do, but to focus on myself.
When I heard about lockers, I was surprised and excited that I got to have my own locker. Having a girl’s locker room and having to change every day into P.E. clothes was also interesting. At my old school, we didn’t even have P.E. every day, only three times a week. We actually meet in a science room for science, and we have the whole class in that room. For technology, we have computers too. We do not have recess at my new school, and at my other school, we had recess every day. There are a lot of different things at my new school. It is more like a high school and I think that is good; it will get me ready for high school. At my other school, since it’s so small and didn’t have as many kids, it was more like elementary school, just with older kids. For the first day of school at my new school, all of things I listed above were new to me. So, when we switched classes I almost got lost each time; and I had to ask for help, a lot, on where my next room was. I was really surprised with our lunch time; it was so short and we only had time to eat. At my old school, we had more time to hang out and chat with the other students once we finished eating. I think this is going to be a big change for me, and probably a change for the better.
I was shaking miserably. I saw a village about one kilometer back. I must go there to seek help. I quickly packed some of my valuables and my documents into a knapsack and hurried off. I realized I had to stay in motion at all times, in order to not suffer hypothermia. I climbed over the ice barrier and came upon a narrow trail through a thick forest. Puddles had formed here and there. I did not care; I stomped right through them. I could not be wet more than I already was. Finally, the first houses. There was not much I could say with my limited Russian, at any door that would open. I would begin with “Korabel” for boat, while making a flipping motion with my hands and then point at my dripping clothing, while shivering all along. Albeit, it did not come to that for no one opened the door. I stumbled on through the rain and mud. In vain, I knocked at the doors of all 15 houses in the village. No response anywhere! What happened to proverbial Russian hospitality? No one was in sight either. HB
I hope your school year is going well, or if it hasn’t started yet, than I hope it will be great! Have a fantastic month of September! HB

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and comprehensive information regarding your advertising program. I will share this information with our advertising committee and we will see where things go from there. Your magazine is very much appreciated by several of our staff members including myself, as we are all loyal readers. Thanks so much for putting out such valuable information to our community. It is greatly appreciated! I am looking forward to working with you so that we may work together to promote healthy lives for our younger population in the Reno and Sparks vicinity. Thanks for being here for all of us!” -Carol Swift, ICDA Charter High School
Nordic Walking… Nordic Walking at the Sparks Marina August 13th was a typical 90 degree day in town, but not hot enough to keep our class from meeting at the Marina for the one hour Nordic Walking introduction class given by Rick Deutsch, an American Nordic Walking Association certified instructor. This fitness activity is the rage in Europe and was profiled in the July Healthy Beginnings issue (Pg 36). Following a short intro explaining the history and benefits of Nordic Walking (how’s 20 to 40 percent more calories burned than just walking sound?), Rick led us around the park to get the feel of using our upper body in our walk. The key is pushing off with the poles when they are by your side. “Think of them as helping propel you forward,” Rick said. Our triceps were awakened, and that’s the key. It takes just a few minutes to master your “reciprocal gait”--arm and leg swing, but then we were off. The poles have rubber tips, to allow quiet sidewalk use, but we took them off to go on the grass. They really dug in and allowed us to feel them “bite” the earth. The activity is not one of intensity, but rather its consistency. Everyone had a good time and we plan to have another session in October. Watch your Healthy Beginnings for sign ups!
“I love the recipes, the articles about alternative medicines and how they are useful (or the occasional ones about how a medicine is being used in a new way) and I love the monthly “herb” page. I like herbs and knowing how to use them for more than flavor. And just an FYI, I turned to this magazine when my sister needed help with all western medicine failed her. Because of your magazine, I was able to help her experience some relief.” –Ann Drayer “Knowledge about holistic health. There are useful tips, practitioners and great recipes. Thank you for providing this wonderful magazine.” –Pam Pearson “I like all of the articles regarding health issues and the recipes. I send them to out-of-state family too!” –Shirley “Great community resource! Love the local connection.” –Windy Firestone

What Are Essential Oils? Submitted By Carol Christian, RAHCC
E
ssential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.
In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends towards more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications. HB
Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile organic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.
For more info, contact Carol Christian at the Reno Alternative Health Clinic (775) 827-6888, inside the Gerber Medical Clinic, 1225 Westfield Ave, Reno, NV.

Farming caused famine, or farming for the future? The choice is ours to make. Continued from Page 18
Successful
“permaculture.” Unlike agriculture, which seeks to alter the land, control it, and subdue it, permaculture principles begin by observing the workings of a healthy ecosystem and acknowledging the interconnectedness of all life forms with in that system. Landscapes are then designed, using these observations, to create food systems that are truly sustainable. This means they can continue indefinitely, without depleting the resources or conditions upon which they depend. Permaculture does not just consider individual parts, but looks at the relationship between life forms as a whole. This approach to design and organization is also starting to be successfully applied to architecture, energy and wastewater systems, even villages and economics. Challenging times are often catalysts that inspire creative solutions to problems that once seemed insurmountable. The restoration efforts mentioned above, and the development of permaculture design, offer us hope; the ability to envision how to grow a healthier, saner world. The sooner we relinquish our attachment to farming practices that are unsustainable in favor of those that honor the land, the sooner we can create a better quality of life, for all of earth’s inhabitants. Just because something may require new behaviors and perspectives does not mean that it’s impossible. The choice is ours to make, we have much to gain from making these desperately needed changes, and everything to lose if we do not act now. HB References: 1. Hemenway, Toby. Gaia’s Garden. PET Adoption
By Lauren Birtwhistle
W
What kind of pet will fit my lifestyle?
hen you make the decision to adopt a pet, you not only save a life, you get a new best friend. Although a great decision, it should not be taken lightly. It is a major decision. Here are a few things to consider before adopting your new friend.
Before adopting that adorable puppy giving you the sweetest “adopt-me” look possible, consider what is best for you and your animal. Busy schedule? Consider an animal that needs less attention like a cat, or an older dog. If you have limited space you may want to consider a bird. If you enjoy hiking and outdoor activities, an active dog would make a great companion. Make sure to research specific breeds and their tendencies before adopting. And know that nearly all species, including ferrets and horses, have rescue groups that will help you find the right animal for you.
Why do I want a pet? Adopting a pet because your kids have been begging you every day for weeks is not a good reason to adopt. If you have children under six years old, you may want to consider waiting a few years before adding a new member to the family. Children should be old enough and mature enough to properly handle and help care for your new pet. Adopting a pet as a surprise or gift is never a good idea. A person should be well prepared and educated about their specific pet before bringing it into their home.
Who else is in the home? If you have small children or other animals, you must make sure that the animal you are adopting is compatible. Most shelters will let you know if an animal is good with children or not. Often, you can bring in your other pets to a shelter and have them meet the potential new member of your family, before actually committing to the adoption.
Can I afford a pet?

The adoption fee is just the beginning. Although most shelters provide vaccinations before adoptions, as well as spaying and neutering, the cost of your pet’s care will continue throughout its lifetime. Annual veterinary visits, microchipping and allergy/ flea control are still a small part. Remember the cost of food, toys, treats, collars and leashes, grooming supplies and possibly obedience classes. It adds up. Make sure you have the financial means to give your new pet what it deserves and needs for a happy and healthy life.

Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.®
Remember… This is not a temporary purchase. Adopting an animal is a major decision. Depending on the animal, you should be prepared to share your life with this animal for at least ten years or more. Be prepared for accidents in the house, soiled or torn furniture and unexpected medical emergencies. Adopting your pet should be a great experience that the whole family can participate in. Your new pet should be welcomed as a new family member and planned for and treated accordingly. HB

Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now Iraq. The miracle of their juiciness inside thick skin gave rise to many legends and stories. The Mesopotamians raised lemons for their beauty and aroma. Egyptians loved them for their aid in embalming. Jews brought them to Israel from their captivity in Babylon some 2,500 years ago. Romans used them as mothballs until Persian slaves taught them better. At various places and times, these citrus fruits have been identified as cures for fever and colic and as protection against poisons. Lemon juice is a powerful antibacterial and it has been proved by experiments that the bacteria of malaria, cholera, diphtheria and typhoid are destroyed by lemon juice. The bark of a lemon tree is used as a fever reducer, and its seeds are used to expel worms from the intestine. Lemon is the most detoxifying fruit. The detoxifying properties arise from its high content of potassium. A squeeze of a lemon a day in the morning will imminently cleanse the body. The juice is highly diuretic and therefore gives relief in kidney and bladder disorders. The juice also encourages bile secretion and is valuable in treating jaundice. Lemon has been shown to be a blessing for mountaineers, as it is helpful at times of insufficient oxygen or difficulty breathing. The lemon juice and the essential of lemons can be of great benefit to mind, body and soul. One of the most important properties of lemons is the ability to defend the body against infection. This is a valuable asset for both illness and external wounds, as lemons can stimulate the body’s white blood corpuscles, improving the body’s ability to defend itself from infection. The essential oil of the lemon is well known for the ability to energize and revitalize. Lemon juice is excellent for colds and sore throats. Its astringent and antiseptic qualities help soothe and its high vitamin C levels help boost the immune system, encouraging normal growth and tissue repair. Lemon also helps to strengthen gums and teeth and prevents and cures acute inflammation of gum margins and dental decay. Oily skin can be toned with lemon juice. A few drops of lemon juice and water are added to a whisked egg white and make an excellent face mask for spotty or greasy skin. For hard skin on elbows or feet, half a lemon rubbed on the affected area for about 10 minutes is helpful. This super fruit is also used to treat dandruff, and can add shine to the hair. The lemon essential oil, when added to an oil burner in a study room, can sharpen focus and induce a sharpening of intellect. According to the therapy test, lemon aroma helps to calm and it lightens and disperses confusion.
Natural Defense Against Infections…
The LEMON! Written by Nancy Muñoz, PA, LMT

lthough acidic to the taste, the modest lemons promote health with a highly alkalinizing effect on the body. Lemons are therefore of great benefit during the cold and flu season, as well as throughout the year for optimal health. In a state of 80% alkalinity and 20% acidity, or perfect blood chemistry, the body is at its best form for resisting invading viruses and bacteria. This state is determined by the food one eats. One highly acidic meal of potatoes, white bread, meat and pie, with a sweetened drink is enough to open one up to an onslaught of determined microbial attackers. When a person becomes sick with an infection, they almost invariably reach for a lemon-flavored drink or a bit of lemon squeezed in comforting herbal tea. Honey and lemon are often mixed together for cough relief, both in liquid form and in cough drops. Lemons can work many household-cleaning miracles, but the very best miracle is the neutralizing alkaline action on acidic internal body systems.
The American Association for Cancer Research studied that consumption of lemon peel might appear to have reduced the risk of developing skin cell cancer by 34%. The researchers speculate that a compound found in lemon peel called DLimonene may protect the skin from cancer. Researchers did not find the same effect from consuming grapefruit or oranges, nor was there a relationship found between fruit juice and lower skin cancer rates. Most lemon peel used was consumed as a topping on food and drinks. HB
It is believed that the ancestors of lemons and limes took root some 8,000 years ago in India or in fertile crescents between
