letter from the owner Some Things Change, Others Remain the Same

I

vividly remember as a teenager when my dad told me he had purchased a house on Kentucky Lake. Just the thought caused me to conjure up plans to go boating, tubing, skiing and swimming at the beach. Every time I came to visit, I got to experience the rock quarry with all it’s graffiti, boats tied together and kids climbing rocks to see if they had what it took to jump. And when I wasn’t in the water, there was always a golf cart upon which to drive around the Moors. Since recently moving to the Lake and now calling it my home, those memories have continued to flood my mind. There is still “floating” room only in the quarry and kids are still jumping, the rocks just look higher now. The Lake is full of boats with people skiing, tubing and fishing, there’s just more of them. The Moors is still a great place to drive a golf cart, but there are more docks, a lodge, larger restaurant and more traffic. Even though some things have changed, the Lake is still a great place for a family outing, great fishing, or an evening boat ride to watch the sun set. In the world of healthcare, I am so thankful for the incredible medical progress I’ve seen in just my lifetime. Following heart by-pass surgery, the patient used to remain in the hospital for several days in order to rest and recouperate. Today, the patient is out of bed walking the next day and in some cases, home after only three nights. Laparoscopic procedures have replaced those which used to result in large scars. Visual imagary through x-rays and CAT scans help physicians improve their diagnostic abilities, while the range of medicines available for treatment far surpass what was previously available. These and other changes are a welcomed friend to those in need of treatment. While these and many other advances have changed the way medicine is practiced, similarities remain. Patients are still looking to the medical profession for their expertise, concern, and willingness to help them through what may prove to be the most difficult time of their life. They want to be informed, encouraged and above all, comfortable with their healthcare provider. With all the changes that we enjoy, it’s nice to know we can still turn to healthcare professionals we can trust. I hope as you read this edition of Healthy Cells Magazine, you will walk away feeling like you are better informed to be an active participate in your fitness and healthcare progress.

Our Cancer Nightmare Comes True The second in a series of excerpts from “Making Love Again” By Virginia and Keith Laken The subject matter of this book is of a personal and explicit nature and may not be suitable for younger or ultra-conservative readers.

I

felt guilty when I walked into Keith’s office, thinking I had let him down and not been there for him when Dr. Barrett called. But Keith was talking on his business phone. Surely, I thought, the fact that he’s back to work means he received good news! As I walked toward Keith, he handed me a piece of paper filled with handwritten notes. At the top of the page was the title “PHONE CALL WITH DR. BARRETT.” I began to read…biopsy is positive…adenocarcinoma…left lobe… probably confined…come in next week to discuss options…suggest surgery and taking of pelvic lymph nodes… Suddenly I felt faint. I fell clumsily into a chair, and was grateful to hear Keith’s voice, as if from a distance. “I’ve gotta go now. I’ll call you back later.” My stomach began to cramp. I could feel the color drain from my face. Keith reached for my hand and held it gently. His eyes reflected concern. Keith always gets upset when he sees me hurting. “How do you feel about this?” I whispered, dragging my focus back to Keith. “I’m numb,” he replied in a level tone. “I can’t take it all in.” Keith paused. “I guess I knew it all along, but when I heard the words I couldn’t believe it. I just stopped feeling.” “How could you go on?” I asked, incredulous. “Make your phone call and do business?” “What else was I supposed to do?” Keith answered quietly. “I can’t do anything to change this.” Keith asked me to be the one to call the children and my mom. I reached out to hold him, and Keith’s voice murmured in my ear: “I don’t want to talk to anyone about it right now.” Beth took the news in her typical stoic manner. “Mom,” she told me, “our family can handle anything.” Steven was equally supportive, but more outwardly emotional. Fighting back tears, he said he’d fly out to be with us anytime we needed him. The call to Mom was difficult. Hearing of Keith’s cancer, I knew, would remind Mom of her own battle with stomach cancer — a topic she tried her best to avoid discussing. It wasn’t surprising, therefore, that Mom said little more than to tell us how sorry she was. The next morning, my first waking thought was of cancer. I looked at Keith, still sleeping, his hair rumpled and his face smooth. “Cancer is eating away at Keith’s body,” I thought, horrified. At breakfast, Keith told me he felt “unclean.” Laptop Notes. January 23, 1995 Tomorrow is my appointment at Mayo to “discuss options”. Still thinking of doing nothing, waiting to see how things develop. Prostate cancer is generPage 6 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky — August 2011

ally slow growing. We may have some time. Not that I want to take risks. I have a dream of sitting on a porch swing with Gin when we’re in our eighties, watching the family around us. I want Duncan to know his Grandpa, to remember that I took him fishing and flying. And Beth and Care say they’re planning a big family. I can’t miss that. But I also can’t risk this surgery. Journal Entry, January 23, 1995 Dear God, please let Keith say yes to the operation. Let him agree to get this cancer out of his body so he can be well again…so we can have our old life back. Now that we know for sure we have to get rid of it… At our appointment with Dr. Barrett he talked about the characteristics and progression of prostate cancer, and reminded Keith of the seriousness of his condition. Of all the treatments available for prostate cancer, the urologist preferred surgery. This option, he said, offered the greatest possibility for a cure. Keith listened intently while Dr. Barrett spoke of recovery time and outcome. Only when he paused did Keith ask the questions that overshadowed all other input for him: “And what about the possibility of becoming impotent?” “That risk is low…about 30%. And you’re young. The odds are in your favor.” Keith then questioned Dr. Barrett about the nerve-sparing technique of prostate surgery, pioneered at Johns Hopkins University Hospital by Dr. Patrick Walsh. “Do you use this procedure here?” Keith asked. “I do,” the surgeon replied readily. “But you can’t assume it guarantees an escape from impotence. There are other factors besides nerve damage that can affect a man’s ability to achieve an erection, such as blood loss and arterial damage. Those causes are almost impossible to predict.” “Look Keith, if you do become impotent, don’t worry. We can easily treat it. These days we have excellent methods for creating erections. We’re using a new injectable medication that gives a man an erection just like the natural thing. So don’t be concerned.” Neither of us spoke as we left Dr. Barrett’s office and headed across the street for our next appointment. Dr. Barrett had recommended we talk to Nick, a man around Keith’s age who had survived prostate cancer thanks to the same surgery he wanted us to consider. Nick had been diagnosed with prostate cancer at the age of thirtynine, and had elected to have a prostatectomy (prostate surgery in

January 15, 1995 — TO ALL EMPLOYEES In an effort to dispel any rumors you may have heard recently, I would like to share some facts with you about my personal health… Should you have any questions about my schedule, projects, or condition, please stop by. I am very open about the subject and willing to explain to whatever detail you may want. Thanks for your support, Keith Laken Laptop Notes, January 28, 1995 When I sent out my memo, I didn’t expect much response. But saying I was willing to answer questions must have opened the floodgates. For two days I haven’t gotten any work done. People have been in my office constantly, some wishing me well, others with questions. The amazing thing was how many told me about their fathers, brothers, and uncles who had prostate cancer, and how worried they were about them. Some people hugged me. Some even cried. It was really embarrassing. I didn’t know people cared so much.

which the prostate gland is removed). He told us it had now been seven years since his operation and, in his experience at least, it had been a blessing. He was still disease-free and doing great. When Keith asked him if “doing great” meant “great in all areas,” Nick grinned coyly and nodded. “I can assure you that I function just like I did before the surgery. No problems whatsoever.” As we walked back to the Clinic, Keith unexpectedly took my hand, and, like a happy schoolboy, began swinging it back and forth. “That was really good for me to hear,” he said as we crossed the street. I looked up. Keith was grinning that wonderful half smile of his. It felt so good to be seeing that smile again! Our final appointment that day was with Dr. Phyliky. Our family doctor for over seven years, Dr. Phyliky wanted to meet with us to discuss any concerns we might still have. Dr. Phyliky began by asking Keith what he had learned from Dr. Barrett and Nick, and how he was now feeling about his situation. Keith quickly summarized the two earlier meetings, then very casually concluded: “…and I’ve made up my mind to go ahead with the surgery.” I couldn’t believe it! I wanted to leap up and smother him with kisses. To laugh. Shout for joy. Cry with relief. Dr. Phyliky nodded and smiled approvingly. “I’m very pleased that you’ve elected to have surgery. Like Dr. Barrett, I feel it gives you the greatest possibility for a cure. I must tell you that my father died with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer kills many men,” Dr. Phyliky stated soberly. “And believe me, it’s not a good way to die.” Journal Entry, January 14, 1995 I was SO surprised when Keith said He’d decided to have the surgery…for the first time in days I feel like I can take a deep breath…. Keith’s going to have surgery! Prayers are indeed answered!

Laptop Notes, February 3, 1995 Tomorrow I go under the knife. My first operation, and I’m really nervous. I don’t like putting my life in someone else’s hands, but that’s what has to be done. Now I just want to get the whole thing over with. It was a tough decision to have this surgery, but I won’t second-guess myself. I never do. Journal Entry, February 3, 1995 Tomorrow Keith has his surgery. God, I’m scared. I know he needs this operation, but I’m still so worried. Something could go wrong. Tonight Keith wanted to make love “for old-times sake,” but I just went through the motions. I couldn’t concentrate. I really don’t know how Keith can do it. How can he have a climax at a time like this??? Keith’s been so concerned about being impotent, I’m sure that’s why he wanted to make love tonight. But I just couldn’t get into it. It’s not important to me that we have sex. I don’t care about that. I JUST WANT KEITH TO LIVE.

The Versatility of Physical Therapy By Bill Holt, DPT, BioKinetics

I

f person A said that physical therapy was for individuals experiencing the aches and pains associated with the Golden Years and person B countered that it was for younger people looking to return to function after a sports related incident, which one would be right? The truth of the matter is, they are both correct. Physical therapy is a multi-faceted profession which addresses a plethora of issues which can affect a person’s quality of life. Physical therapists fresh out of school have the knowledge and skills to address issues involving traumatic injuries, balance issues, and post-surgical problems to name a few with opportunities to specialize in everything from pediatrics to women’s health. This broad scope of practice allows physical therapists to interact a variety of patients. This can be illustrated by taking a look at Page 8 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky — August 2011

a grandmother and her granddaughter who recently underwent therapy together at the same outpatient clinic. Miriam Eaton wasn’t sure what was going on when she first began noticing that she was having difficulty moving her ankle. Miriam’s troubles started after experiencing a fall in which her ankle was twisted inward. “It seemed like my ankle progressed from being painful to not being able to move it,” says Miriam. “It was definitely scary.” She underwent several weeks of therapy which left her with minor improvement in terms of pain. During rehab, she slowly began noticing weakness when attempting to move her ankle in certain directions. This was followed by numbness and tingling in her ankle which gradually worked its way up the calf to the knee. After a series of tests it was discovered the

nerve supplying the muscles and skin on the front side of her lower leg was not working properly. It progressed to the point where an assistive device had to be worn on the affected foot/ankle in order to keep her toes from dragging the ground while walking. “The doctor gave me an AFO which really helped with my foot drop,” recalls Miriam. “Afterwards walking was much easier.” When Miriam first began therapy her lower leg muscles exhibited such extensive weakness that she could not even lift her foot against gravity. Shortly after her rehab began, Miriam began seeing a familiar face the next plinth over. Miriam’s grandmother, Norma Eaton, came to therapy for plantar fasciitis, a foot problem common in the general population, but especially for people over the age of 40 years old. Plantar fasciitis is caused when connective tissue on the bottom of the foot is chronically irritated due to a number of factors, including overuse, improper footwear, and/or muscle weakness in the ankle. In Norma’s particular case, heel pain developed initially after several days of walking distances greater than was typical for her. “I am a very active person, but the pain began keeping me from doing what I want to do,” says Norma. “From the time I put my foot on the ground in the morning there was very little relief. It affected my normal routine, especially cooking and cleaning.” This heel pain eventually spread along the bottom of her foot prompting her to see a physician, which eventually led to a family reunion of sorts weekly in therapy. The top priority in Miriam’s case was to make sure she did not sustain substantial muscle loss due to the improperly functioning nerve. This involved utilizing Russian Electrical Stimulation to elicit muscle contractions (“flexing” of a muscle) to maintain muscle bulk as well as promote proper nerve regeneration. “We have found that Russian e-stim is very effective in cases like Miriam’s in which nerve supply is compromised,” says Marvin Travis, PTA. Russian electrical stimulation was combined with Biofeedback therapy, a process of using electrodes placed over muscle which measures strength of contraction, to re-teach Miriam how to use the involved muscles. Norma’s initial visits relied less on advancements in therapeutic technology and more on manual techniques to the problematic plantar fascia as well range of motion techniques to the t soft tissue of the ankle and calf. Later therapy for both involved strengthening of the relevant musculature with emphasis on returning to problem free functioning in their daily activities. Miriam and her grandmother Norma are currently still in therapy but progressing well. “The pleasant and caring people at Biokinetics make it a pleasure to come to therapy,” says Norma. “My granddaughter and I are proof that physical therapy can help both the young and the old.” The respective cases of this grandmother-granddaughter pair shows the versatility of physical therapy. Whether it is a relatively rare nerve issue or a relatively common foot problem, conservative treatments, like physical therapy, have been shown to be effective in returning people to pain free functioning in their daily lives. Most outpatient physical therapy clinics offer free screens to individuals who suspect they have an injury which may benefit from physical therapy. It is a quick and easy way to have a problem assessed and the therapist will recommend the next step on the road to a pain-free return to your life.

An All-Natural Life By Donya Lovett, Owner Expressions Boutique and Gifts

I

n late October 2010 Donya Lovett was introduced to a product known as ACE. ACE is an ALL NATURAL dietary supplement used for Appetite Control and Energy. As the old saying goes; “and the rest is history.” Donya was given a sample pack of ACE from her hairdresser. As most of us ladies do while getting our hair cut and colored, we always somehow get into that conversation of the daily stresses of life and how we’re all tired, need more energy and have some extra pounds to shed. Donya, being in healthcare as a Respiratory Therapist for the past 23 years admits most medical professionals are very skeptical of the latest “diet fad” on the market, therefore, she was reluctant to try ACE. After given this ACE sample packet she researched each ingredient and was amazed to find that each one of them seemed to be “MIGHTY”. The ingredients in ACE are a synergistic blend, which simply means put together they are even more powerful. Donya started taking ACE and immediately was astonished by the appetite control and energy that she had from just1 pill, but without the jittery heart racing she was sure she would experience. She says she was not having cravings or feeling like she was “starving” before mealtime. This helped her to make healthier choices and she began to realize that her portions were much less than what they had been for several years. As most people in today’s society, we eat not only to fulfill our physical hunger but sometimes it goes beyond that. We eat due to stress and this packs on pounds and leads to health issues later on. After Donya had been on ACE for a few days, she went to work and began to tell coworkers, doctors and nurses about what she was taking and how much better she felt already. She had many of the doctors that she works with to look it over to make sure it was safe. Feeling better and having more energy along with the appetite control she began to drop pounds. Simply, less food intake and more energy led to more activity. Donya lost a pound a day for the first 16 days. She began sharing this with her friends, family and coworkers and people became excited. With today’s hectic lifestyle and busy schedules there are very few people that can’t benefit from extra energy and a tool to help you from constantly overeating. She then began to look into the other products that the makers of ACE had to offer and shared them too. The products that Donya is the most passionate about is the ACE and SABA. SABA is a juice that is packed with 16 antioxidants and 7 adaptogens. Adaptogens go to your blood and begin to repair damaged cells. Anything in a body that causes stress affects the blood cells. Very few people today live a life without stress. SABA starts repairing those blood cells. After using the ACE and SABA combination known as the 1-2 Punch for weight loss, Donya continues to not only lose on the scale but she also began to drop inches too. So far, she’s Page 10 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky — August 2011

dropped 3 sizes and approximately27 lbs, but feels just as excited about the improvement with issues such as poor sleep, stress, aching joints, better focus, mood and more. Within 6 months, Donya and her husband Dennis Lovett have shared these products with hundreds of people. Both of them continue to improve their health and lose weight and share their personal testimony and also the testimonies of others whom they have introduced to ACE and SABA. The Lovett’s have friends that have lost from 10 - 110 pounds. They have several friends that are now off of medications that they had been taking for several years. When people start using something that has such powerful results they tell people. People sharing their testimony about what ACE and SABA has done for themselves or a family member can be powerful. Especially now in the days when their are so many of us dealing with health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and many more. The Lovett’s feel very blessed to have found these products. They have not only been a blessing to them physically by changing their overall health and wellness, but financially it has allowed them the ability to open a business in their community of Benton, KY. Expressions Boutique and Gifts. It is located at 98 West 5th Street. It is located in the Wild Hair Salon building with Merle Norman Cosmetics. They now have a way to reach many more individuals with their retail business. The All-natural health products are the heart of the business and the main focus of why they are there. They love to discuss the benefits of all the health products they carry. From overall health and wellness to specific products for men and ladies. For more information on SABA and ACE or any of the all natural health products call Expressions Boutique and Gifts at 270-527-8899.

The Look of Love By Donya Lovett, Owner Expressions Boutique and Gifts

T

hrough years of experience, Linda Outland at Merle Norman Cosmetics in Benton KY knows many of the questions that women are reluctant to openly and comfortably discuss with just anyone. Whether we experience a temporary or permanent hair loss it is not a conversation that is easy for most of us to have. Linda has a way of making anyone feel comfortable and at ease when they enter her doors. With her bubbly personality and her years of helping to make women feel better about themselves it is amazing what she can accomplish in her shop right before your eyes. Linda is sensitive to customers needs and will do everything she can to show them dignity and respect.

“If hair loss is a possibility in your future, you may want to save a swatch of your own hair for a match.” Merle Norman carries a full line of Raquel Welch wigs. These wigs are virtually indistinguishable from a natural head of hair. Today’s stateof-the-art wig construction gives these wigs a realistic appearance. The synthetic fibers are much thinner than they used to be, and thus avoid a bulky “wig” look. In the 60’s wigs were made with solid caps that were definitely hot and sticky. In the late 90’s the Raquel Welch Signature Collection introduced the patented Raquel Welch Memory Cap. This cap replaces the wide stretch lace used in most of today’s wigs with a thinner, more resilient stretch material that actually molds to the shape of the head for a lighter, more secure fit. All Raquel Welch wigs, except those that are 100% hand tied are made with Raquel Welch Memory Cap construction. A wig that fits your head is essential to security. A proper fit prevents slippage. Raquel Welch wigs come in petite, petite average, average and large sizes. Linda fits, cuts and styles the wigs and instructs you on proper care of your wig. Linda says that choosing a color that is as close as possible to your natural hair color is best. If hair loss is a possibility in your future, you may want to save a swatch of your own hair for a match. Also, choosing a style most similiar to the one you usually wear is a recommendation, but most of all you want it to fit your personality and lifestyle. If you choose to be adventurous, you may want to use this time to experiment with that new look you have always wanted. Merle Norman has a wide range of salon inspired colors, so you should be able to find a shade that is right for you. She also carries the Gabor line of wigs and some other accessories, such as hairpieces and extensions, human hair eyebrows, eyelashes and many products for chemotherapy patients that need wigs and accessories. There is a multitude of looks in many varied styles from traditional, trendy, sporty, sophisticated, casual contemporary, business or pure glamour. The belief that all wigs are too expensive is simply untrue. Wigs, like any piece of apparel, vary in price depending on the materials and

craftsmanship. Some insurance companies will allow you to claim your wig with a perscription from your doctor for “hair prosthesis” and by stating that on the sales receipt. There are many women that have their wigs simply for the convenience of getting ready and looking fashionable without all the time and fuss. Linda has lived in Marshall County her entire life and has owned her business since 1994, so most of her customer base has become consistent loyal customers and lifelong friends. She also has women that come in to the shop that have traveled from other states for her expertise. Linda’s business is a full line of Merle Norman Cosmetics and she can assist you in the choices for your everyday skincare and makeup routine or can get you ready for some of your most memorable occasions from proms to weddings. Linda continues to go to makeup artistry school in LA often to keep up to date with the latest makeup trends. For more information or to schedule an appointment with Linda Outland call 270-527-8899. She would love for you to call and setup an appointment with her. She can be reached at Merle Norman and Expressions Boutique and Gifts in Benton, KY at 98 West 5th Street. Located in the Wild Hair Salon building.

Jackson Purchase Medical Center

Achieving Beauty From the Inside Out By Gordon Fidler

Dr. Triana and his staff Candice Clifton and Susan Price.

I

n America, we have options. Drive down the street and you will quickly find yourself overwhelmed with store and restaurant choices. Walk into any of them, and the decision making can be overwhelming. If you don’t like the towels or dishes in one store, there are 20 more with different options. Are you hungry for a sandwich? Which kind - round or square burgers, sub style, gyro, veggie? The varieties go on and on. In the immortal words of the Russian Comedian Yakoff Smirnoff, “America, what a country.” When considering how to address your health care needs, Dr. Rudolph Triana, Jr. M.D., F.A.C.S., offers several options. In practice at the Jackson Purchase Medical Center (JPMC) for the past year, Page 12 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky — August 2011

Dr. Triana has a plethora of skills from which to draw for the benefit of the people of Western Kentucky. As a board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, he has been practicing cosmetic surgery for more than a decade. He is also a board certified otolaryngologist head and neck surgeon. To be sure, he has a very unique practice with services including ENT, head/neck surgery, allergy treatment, plastic surgery (invasive and non-invasive), weight loss, fitness and hormone balancing. It only takes a few minutes talking with Dr. Triana to realize he is passionate about the health of his patients. Instead of trying to cram as many appointments into his calendar as possible, he strives to indi-

vidualize each visit, ask the right questions and listen to the responses. Ultimately he wants his patients to feel good, be healthy and live life to the fullest. Along the way, he does what the term doctor means, “to teach”. Upon arrival in his office, new patients will be asked to complete something called a hormone questionnaire. It is an elaborate evaluation of a person’s medical history, current symptoms, sleeping and eating habits, nutritional state, etc. This provides a template to help him evaluate how the person is eating, what they are consuming and when (both meals and snacks), then adds factors such as age and gender and the person’s physical activity. Approximately 80 percent of the questionnaire centers around nutrition. Nutrition, Dr. Triana said, is the key. Without good nutrition, health problems are sure to follow. When asked about the receptivity of patients to nutritional and health instruction, he said, “This part of the country is hungry for that information.” Most of the time, patients are receptive, but not always. He cited a case where a five year old was brought to his office weighing 105 pounds. After conducting a battery of assessments, including the child’s eating habits, it was clear that diet was the culprit. The family remained convinced it was something else.

After

Before

After

“Without good nutrition, health problems are sure to follow.” The biggest challenge The biggest challenge Dr. Triana sees is helping people move from understanding the information, to owning it. Helping his patients grasp the future impact of their dietary and fitness choices today, is a tough hurdle to clear. He said most people don’t take the time to evaluate what they eat, the result of which is a build up of toxins in their bodies leading to a general feeling of malaise, fatigue, abnormal weight gain or disease. If that cycle continues year after year, by the time they are 60, they can’t take hikes with their grandchildren, physiologically they are much older than they are chronologically, and they can end up like one of his 73 year old patients who is on a list of medications. They sit at home because they don’t have energy to do anything more. Once someone “owns” the information, it still requires discipline to live it, something Dr. Triana knows about first hand. He has been working out since age seven, and developing his knowledge of nutrition since high school. Today he continues to combine those interests personally by maintaining a regular fitness and nutrition regimen. By living this kind of lifestyle, his ability to empathize with his patients increases, and he can speak from personal experience. How now shall we eat? The federal government recently announced a change from the all too familiar food pyramid to the food plate. Dr. Triana said this change may emphasize or reemphasize dietary standards, but knowledge without implementation is of no value to someone’s health. It takes discipline to take care of our bodies, but all too frequently people look for a shortcut. What about people who do heed the doctor’s advise? Dr. Triana said that many people who follow his counsel by changing to a healthier diet and adding exercise then want to step outside the box to look better for their age. They will come in for some botox to hide the wrinkles, a chemical peel, Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), or a brow lift. It really depends upon their goals and how much they want to spend. There are others, however, who come to the office for different reasons. One woman had spent about three years loosing nearly 100 pounds by watching her diet and exercising. As a result, she wanted to address the issue of having excess skin. After Dr. Triana performed a posterior body lift and a thigh lift, she once again had the confidence to wear shorts.

Dr. Rudy J. Triana, Jr. Jackson Purchase ENT & Aesthetic Surgery For those women who have reached the stage in life where their kids are a little bit older and they want to do something special for themselves, there is the “mommy makeover”. This frequently involves a breast augmentation, tummy tuck and perhaps some liposuction. These procedures combined with the proper diet and exercise, can help a woman maintain the type of figure she would like to have. Not everyone is an immediate candidate for some of the procedures. If someone comes in and they are severely overweight, Dr. Triana will instruct them to loose as much weight as possible, then perhaps some liposuction would be helpful in those trouble spots. He may say no until enough of the fat is gone, otherwise, any procedure may have to be repeated once the weight is lost. In today’s society where pictures of models or celebrities abound on billboards and the grocery store checkout lane, the pressure to look beautiful is everywhere. Beauty may only be skin deep, but there are foundational supports to achieving and maintaining that beauty. A healthy diet of foods as natural as possible and plenty of exercise are the linchpins. And as with any foundation, it will occasionally require some added maintenance. Dr. Triana is prepared to teach, encourage and if necessary take those extra steps to assist his patients in their efforts to live a long, healthy, active life. Hot Rockin’ Stone Massage By Jenny Stephens, LMT

H

OT ROCKIN’ STONE MASSAGE is one of the most enjoyable, rejuvenating and therapeutic massage treatments available in the world. Hot Rockin’ Stone massage therapy can be enjoyed all year long, but especially during the cold winter days. They can even be enjoyed during the hot dog days of summer. Not only is Hot Rockin’ Stone Massage totally relaxing, but it is very beneficial in helping keep arthritis pain, back pain, hip and knee pain, fibromyalgia pain, headache, muscle pain, depression, insomnia, plantar fasciitis, heel spurs and so many other conditions in check and more bearable. For one hour or longer you get to go to your favorite vacation spot in the universe. No work, no rush hour traffic, no hustle or bustle running the kids from here to there. Most individuals don’t have the slightest idea what a Hot Rockin’ Stone Massage is or what to expect. Basaltic Stones or River Stones are heated in a slow cooker or crock pot filled with water for fortyfive minutes before the session begins. The Hot Rockin’ Stones are removed from the water and placed in a special container to retain the correct amount of heat for the massage session. The stones are cleaned and sterilized after each session. The stones vary in size from small, medium, large, light, dark, flat, round, smooth and rough. The stones are usually comfortable for the client when the massage therapist can hold the hot stones in the palm of the hand or in the bend of the arm comfortably. The Hot Rockin’ Stones can be used in several different ways after being removed from the hot water. The stones are positioned on the areas of the body that need extra special care. Medium and/or large stones are on placed on both side of the spine starting at the low back and going up to the shoulders; allowing the nervous system to relax. Essential oils may be used to enhance the Hot Rockin’ stone massage. While the oils and Hot Rockin’ Stones are warming and relaxing the muscles of the back; the legs and feet can be massaged. If the client wishes hot stones can be place on the thighs, and glutes better known as the “hips”, while the back is being massaged with stones. Sometimes smaller stones or gem stones are placed between the toes and over the sinus cavities of the face. The neck can also be gently massaged with the small to medium stones. The massage therapist usually massages the muscles and connective tissues with lightly oiled stones one in each palm and the strokes are similar to a normal swedish massage. Depending on what the client prefers the stones can be used to give light, medium or deep pressure. The essential oils and heat from the Hot Rockn’ Stones loosen up the tight and sore muscles in the problem areas making it easier to work out the tight knots in these areas. Any deep tissue work is not as painful as some deep tissue work and usually will not leave you sore the next day.

Why not get a HOT ROCKN’ STONE MASSAGE TODAY! This is a natural process that leaves you totally relaxed and rejuvenated. You may sleep better tonight than you have slept in a long time. You still get the wonderful comfort of skin to skin contact with a HOT ROCKN’ STONE MASSAGE that everyone needs. Call a professional massage therapist today. YOU DESERVE IT! The Healthiest Shoe You Will Ever Wear Submitted by At Home Medical

M

any diabetics don’t realize how important diabetic footwear can be in heading off foot complications associated with diabetes. Or perhaps simply don’t understand the benefits diabetic shoes provide. It’s no secret that diabetics have an increased risk of developing foot problems. These foot problems can range from mild to major and the key is prevention through the use of diabetic footwear.

What is more unfortunate is that wounds of the feet can be slow to heal because of reduced blood circulation. These wounds if not treated quickly and properly can, and often do, lead to amputation. This is why it is very important diabetics tend to their feet with properly fitted diabetic footwear and check their feet daily for any blisters, cuts, abrasions, or ulcers.

Why are Diabetic Feet So Vulnerable? For diabetics, one major complication is peripheral neuropathy which is nerve damage causing loss of feeling in the extremities such as your feet and legs. This loss of sensation prevent diabetics from knowing when they are walking on hot surface, stepping on a sharp object, or have ill fitting shoes that rub, cut, or blister their feet.

How are Diabetic Shoes Different? Diabetic shoes are not like any shoes you can get at a department store. They offer plenty of benefits for in the prevention of future diabetic foot complications. Diabetic shoes are wider and deeper to allow air and blood circulation in the feet which aids in healing. The extra room also helps prevent perspiration and bacteria growth. The

break-in your shoes with a daily wear schedule and how to examine your feet each day.” shoes are designed with no interior seams to eliminate abrasion and rubbing which could cause the formation of corns, calluses, and ulcers. In addition, diabetic shoes come with multi-layered insoles which are thicker than store purchased insoles to provide pressure relief on the heels and balls of the feet. These insoles are made from special materials to absorb moisture and resist bacteria growth. Diabetic shoes are very comfortable and can be worn anytime and anywhere and provide much needed protection to your feet. Which Style of Diabetic Shoes are Best? Diabetic shoes used to be clunky and boxy but now they have evolved to a point where they are stylish and comfortable at the same time. Styles are available in walking, running, hiking, boots (even steeltoe boots), causal, and dress shoes. Many shoes have the option of either Velcro closure or shoe-string closure. In addition, the diabetic shoes come in a large variety of colors, leathers, and fabrics. At Home Medical carries over 100 diabetic shoe styles to choose from. Although the options are almost endless on the wide variety of diabetic shoes available; certain factors also play a role in which diabetic shoes will be best for your feet. Diabetic feet that tend to swell will need shoes made with stretchy fabric or elastic sides to accommodate swollen feet. Some diabetics may need to consider steel-toe boots for on-the-job foot protection. Some may have other health conditions that may need to be accommodated with a specialty diabetic shoe. Most diabetic shoes today will meet both your health and style needs but in a diabetics’ case, fashion falls far behind health considerations. How Do I Get Diabetic Shoes? Diabetic shoes are a covered benefit for diabetics with Medicare, Medicaid, and most other insurance plans. Currently, one pair of diabetic shoes and three pairs of insoles are covered each year. First visit your physician who treats your diabetes for a foot exam and a prescription for diabetic shoes. After receiving your prescription, come by At Home Medical for your fitting. Our certified diabetic shoe fitters will perform a foot evaluation and properly fit you in your new diabetic shoes. Our fitters will explain how to break-in your shoes with a daily wear schedule and how to examine your feet each day. At Home Medical’s diabetic shoes are sold with a return policy to allow you to test your shoes in your own home for maximum comfort. We have seen firsthand complications of neuropathy on the diabetic foot. During our foot evaluations, At Home Medical has revealed foreign objects embedded in feet and between toes of diabetics who prefer to walk around barefoot—all unknown to the diabetic due to loss of sensation in their feet. Keep in mind that diabetic footwear is worn for the specific purpose of avoiding foot related problems and must be worn at any time weight is placed on the feet. Although diabetic footwear can significantly prevent future diabetic foot problems, it is also important that you inspect your feet each day. For more information, please contact At Home Medical at 1-866515-0897 or visit their showroom at 837 US Hwy 68 West in Draffenville.

Chiropractic Care By Dr. Mark E. Atnip, McCracken County Chiropractic

Page 18 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky — August 2011

P

icking up the phone to call a doctor’s office for the first time can be scary. First of all, I don’t like being in pain. Physical pain is just no fun. You won’t find pain anywhere on my Christmas list—“Dear Santa, Please send me lots of aches and pains to interfere with my activities!” Feeling good is much more enjoyable. Activities seem to be a lot more fun when there is no pain too. Aside from physical pain, I don’t like being stressed. Mental stress is the stuff to make you hair turn grey! The feelings of anxiety and mental discomfort can be as bad as or worse than physical pain. Making phone calls, going to new places, or doing new things can lead to high stress or anxiety. Unfortunately, when it comes to having aches or pains, this can create a problem. On one hand, it is uncomfortable to be in pain. On the other, it can be as equally uncomfortable to have to pick up the phone, go to a new place, and possibly do something new (like see a chiropractor if you haven’t been before). We may not be able to take away all your stress and anxieties, but by explaining who we are and what we do we can hopefully lower your stress if you ever need our help. First, if you are not aware, as a chiropractor I work with the bones, muscles, tissues, and nerves making up the joints of the spine. Spinal problems show up in many different forms. Many people with spinal problems suffer from back pain, neck pain, or headaches. Poor posture, abnormal gait, spasm, and weakness are just a few other common symptoms. In fact, the spinal nerves exiting from your back go to every organ and tissue in the body. When damage occurs to the spine from trauma or daily stress, your nerves may become irritated causing all kinds of changes in the body’s ability to function normally. Almost any symptom you can imagine can possibly occur if the organs or systems are negatively affected by the nerves. Let’s say you begin to suffer from pain in the lower back. Who do you call? What makes a chiropractor different than a medical doctor? Now I can’t speak for your medical doctor, but I can tell you what my focus is as a chiropractor. In our office, we focus on finding the very cause of your problem…and fixing it. Now your definition of fixing and mine may be a little different. Some people’s idea of fixing back pain is to simply take a pain pill and cover it up. I call that masking the problem or putting a band-aid on it…not fixing it. To me, taking a pain pill is the same as having your car’s engine knocking and putting in a set of ear plugs to cover it up. You may not hear the engine knocking any more, but it is still there. That is what many people do with their body. They cover up the warning signs and hit the gas! If your car’s engine is knocking and I was a mechanic, I would want to know why it is knocking. Only

then can I fix it for you. The knocking is important for me to locate and identify the problem. As a mechanic I would not be interested in trying out different sets of earplugs to keep you from hearing the knocking sound. Instead, I would be interested in getting your car’s engine back to normal so that it doesn’t knock at all. A healthy car engine does not knock! And as a chiropractor, if your back is hurting, I want to know why it is hurting. Only by finding the cause, can your problem be corrected. Much like the mechanic who does not want to give you ear plugs, I am not interested in giving you different pills to cover your pain so you can ignore it. I am interested in getting your back to return to normal so that it doesn’t cause pain at all. A healthy back does not cause pain! If you want to get to the root of the problem, a trip to my office may be a great investment in your health. Once at my office, it is simple. All tests and procedures are done right in our office for your time and convenience. We work with all insurances and any financial obligations will be covered with you before any treatments are given. No one likes unexpected bills! First, my team and I will work to find the source of your pain or other symptoms. By learning more about the history of your problem, using orthopedic exams, neurological exams, and x-rays, we can pinpoint the damaged area causing your symptoms. Once your problem is discovered, if we can help… great! If we can’t, we will let you know and help you find the right type of health care provider for your condition. If your condition can be helped, we will discuss your particular goals, what type of recovery can be expected, and how long it will take to reach your goals. Once a plan has been decided, we can start by using gentle chiropractic techniques. In addition to the variety of chiropractic techniques we use, we also use rehabilitation, nutrition, muscle work, and many other therapies. The combination helps us to be more effective and return your spine back to normal very quickly. In conclusion, if you have been suffering with a problem and think your spine or spinal nerves could be the source, give us a call. Our team is super friendly; we will answer any questions and help you decide if chiropractic is right for you. Your back may thank you someday! If you would like to talk to Dr. Atnip about a particular condition you are having feel free to call McCracken County Chiropractic at 444-7111 from 9 A.M.—6 P.M. Monday thru Friday. You can also learn more about your conditions, chiropractic care, McCracken County Chiropractic, and Dr. Mark E. Atnip by visiting our website at www.paducahdoc.com.

Treatment Options For H

aving kidney disease today is much easier than in any other time in history. Kidney patients are able to choose more kinds of treatment options than ever, thus giving the patient the ability to choose a treatment option to match their life style. When the kidney disease (CKD) develops into End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), decisions about treatment will need to be made. These important decisions deserve a specialized education that not everyone is capable of giving. For that reason and because so many patients start dialysis without full knowledge of their options, Fresenius Medical Care, the largest provider of kidney disease management services, provides this education free to all kidney disease patients and their families in the form of classes and personal education at the W.KY. Kidney Specialists medical office. Throughout areas of the state, Fresenius has kidney educators, called Treatment Options Program Specialists, (TOPS). These specialists, in cooperation with the local nephrology physicians, teach patients and their families who are in stage 3 and 4 kidney failure. Their goal is to teach patients about various forms of treatment as well as to give information that may slow the progression of their disease. This new and exciting program will provide sufficient information so that the patient can actively participate with his/her physician to select the appropriate renal replacement therapy is chosen when your kidneys no longer work (stage 5). You may choose hemodialysis (outpatient, in home, and nocturnal), peritoneal dialysis (usually called home therapy), transplant and no therapy. We’ll explain those options in more detail later in this article. Its is important to note that this free education is provided in an “unbiased” class or individual setting. This critical information is presented in such a way that the participants are not influenced in regards to their choices. It is felt that educated patients will become more empowered to not only become active in their care but to also feel more in control of their disease. The topics presented in these classes are basic and beneficial in understanding chronic kidney disease. Patients and families will begin to learn more about the kidneys, what they do, and what happens when they fail. Guidance will be given in slowing the progression of the disease, such as taking control of their diabetes or high blood pressure the number one reasons for kidney failure. We will also discuss the differences between acute and chronic kidney disease, your GFR numbers and symptoms of kidney disease, such as swelling in the feet and hands, poor appetite, fatigue, itching and difficulty in breathing. For every form of dialysis there needs to be the appropriate access of way to do the dialysis. The class will discuss the importance of being prepared and having the right access placement before it is needed. Unfortunately, 82% of new dialysis patients start with an emergency temporary catheter. These catheters have a high risk of infection and are not preferred by the renal community. The preferred access for hemodialysis is a fistula with a graft coming in second. A fistula will surgically tie a vein and artery together, usually in the non-dominate arm, to insure the best possible dialysis treatment. The only access available for peritoneal dialysis is the peritoneal cavity catheter, which must be placed a few weeks before treatment can begin. Now, let’s talk about the treatment options. There are two types of Peritoneal Dialysis and Hemodialysis. The first type of Peritoneal Dialysis

(PD) is Continuous Ambulatory PD or CAPD. This is a home therapy done by the patient usually done during the day. The patient does the treatments usually four times a day where he/she places a cleansing fluid (dialysate) into their peritoneal cavity and then drains the cleansed kidney fluids. This generally takes approximately 30 minutes for each treatment. The second type of PD is called Continuous Cycling PD or CCPD. This style of PD uses a nightly machine that does the dialysis Joanne Engelland, MSW, TOPS while the patient sleeps. These methFresenius Medical Care ods take only a few days of learning and can be done without a partner in the home. Travel is also easier with both forms of PD and the diet can be more liberal as the patients will dialyze daily, thus acting more like your own kidney function. Hemodialysis, a process of using your own blood to remove excess fluid and waste from your body, has several options available. Remember a fistula will need to be placed earlier (minimum of 3 to 4 months, if possible) to receive the best treatment possible for all the forms of hemodialysis. Traditionally, one thinks of coming to an outpatient center for three days a week as the only method of hemodialysis. Additionally however, some dialysis centers also provide dialysis at treatments at home. Now this form of hemodialysis, at home, does take more training and a partner to be with them during their treatments. It can be portable and patients find it gives them more choices. As you can see, dialysis options are as individual as the patients. No longer does one have to choose an option and then work their lives around dialysis. The patents can now have dialysis work for them! At Fresenius Medical Care we want the patient to be in charge or their dialysis and to have the freedom to live their lives to the fullest! REMEMBER An educated patient is an involved patient, An involved patient is an empowered patient, And empowered patient is a healthy patient. Joanne Engelland, is western Kentucky’s area TOPS representative. She has been a medical, geriatric and psychiatric social worker for many years. Joanne has worked in Dialysis as a renal social worker since 2002 and continues to enjoy this area of medical and educational social work. She works closely with the staff at W.KY. Kidney Specialists and believes that providing this worthwhile education to patients before they reach kidney failure is paramount to not only their survival but to their overall health and well-being. Joanne is available to teach general kidney education classes or to provide individual consultations for those having declining kidney disease. Her office is in the Fresenius Medical Care Dialysis unit in Paducah and can be reached at 270.443.0217.

Spotlight on Mental Health in the Elderly:

Adjustment Disorder By Rachael Belford, RN-Massac Memorial Hospital-New Beginnings Program

A

djustment disorders are a short-term condition that occurs when a person is unable to cope with stress from a particular situation in their life. These disorders usually develop when a person is having a hard time adjusting to a large change in their life, such as: leaving their home for an assisted living facility, retirement, the death of a spouse or close friend, development of serious health problems or divorce. Symptoms can include: feelings of hopelessness, depressed mood, frequent crying, nervousness, palpitations, changes in appetite, problems sleeping, fatigue, or avoidance of people or social gatherings. Adjustment disorders are extremely common and can affect anyone at any time. The symptoms usually appear within three months of the large change that has occurred and can last up to six months or longer. Adjustment disorders can have severe consequences if left untreated. The number one treatment for this type of disorder is group psychotherapy. This allows the person to understand what the problem

Page 22 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky — August 2011

“Adjustment disorders are extremely common and can affect anyone at any time.” actually is and learn techniques to cope with the changes that have occurred in their life. If you are having any of these symptoms or know anyone who is, please call us at Massac Memorial Hospital-New Beginnings Program at 618-524-7370. We offer services five days a week, including group psychotherapy as well as individual and family counseling and we are specifically designed for the senior citizens of our community.

Medicare – Do You Want the Good News or the Bad News? GOOD NEWS! Medicare kicks in when you reach 65! BAD NEWS…Medicare by itself does not give you the cover that you need to give you the protection you require during your retirement. Let me explain. In these difficult financial times there remains so much confusion about everything to do with Health Insurance. There is so much misinformation on the Internet, and those approaching their 65th Birthday struggle to know what being eligible for Medicare really means, and how it will impact their finances. When you reach 65 and have dealt with all the jokes told at your expense by family and friends, wouldn’t it be nice to know that you have already consulted an expert and put in place the necessary Medicare supplement. “Why do I need a supplement?” I hear you ask. Basic Medicare quite simply does not give you the coverage you need. If you do not take out a supplement your Health coverage will cost you an arm

and a leg and will, in no time at all, be eating into those hard earned savings and face the prospect of unnecessary financial difficulties. Medicare, byitself, only provides 80% of the cost of your Doctors’ visits and Hospital charges. Not only that but it also makes you responsible for various deductibles that you somehow need to find the money for. For example, the deductible for Medicare Part A (Hospital charges) amounts to $1,132 (per benefit period – 60 days). On top of that the Medicare Part B deductible is $162.00 for this year, and this relates to your visits to the doctor. It is very likely that these figures will increase even more in 2012. As if that is not worrying enough we have not even started to explain the problem about the most frequently used health care item. Yes, you guessed it…Prescriptions! The Medicare choices are quite complex but we can take away the worry and put in place a very simple and excellent Prescription plan, and help you decide which one suits you best depending on your particular Script history. We would be delighted to go through these with you face to face, and explain all your choices. In our experience the average cost of these types of Prescription plans is in the $24 -$50 range. So, quite clearly, Medicare by itself does not provide the answer to your Health care issues. However, help is at hand. We can advise you on inexpensive supplements that are available, that not only pick up the deductibles but also pay that missing 20%. There are various options available to you, and we can discuss them in detail with you, without charge, but the usual premiums for these supplements vary between $85 and $160 per month. Incidentally, it is wise to speak to us at least thirty days 30 days before the big day. Medicare kicks in on the 1st day of the Month of your birth, for example if you were born on June 24th then your Medicare coverage will start on June 1st, and you need to have spoken to us at least thirty days before then. The other great advantage of taking out a Medicare Supplemental Policy is the fact that if you do so within six months of your Birthday there are no medical questions to be answered, and your previous Health History is irrelevant! In other words your coverage is not rated according to your health. For anyone who has been refused coverage or had excessive premiums to pay because of their personal health issues, this is GREAT news! We are able to offer free advice on ALL Health Insurance issues and can advise and assist with your Medicare Supplement application and Prescription plan too! Give us a call today and let’s arrange to meet and talk about your situation and which particular Supplement will be best for you. Let me help you plan a happy and care free retirement! quality care

Aging, Healthcare and You By Jim Fox, President, CEO of Marilyn’s Medical Freedom

F

ortunate indeed are the few who wake up one day senior citizens without aches, pains and too many times debilitating physical conditions that rob them of the life and pleasures they used to enjoy. I’ve known a few, folks who get old but don’t really look old and still put in a hard days work with no ill effects from it sometimes even into their eighties. My mom used to amaze me by stepping up onto a kitchen chair to reach something high up in the cabinet and she was well into her eighties before she quit doing it. Most of us however, aren’t that fortunate and start collecting various aches and pains in our forties and sometimes before that. Most start looking around for remedies at their onset or soon after they discover they aren’t going away and begin calling the 800 numbers they see on TV for their ‘miracle cure’ many times regretting it later after they stumble on a company that really is interested in their well-being.

There are signs to look for that should tend to direct your attention to the keeper companies, one you’ll gladly go back to again and again. I’m talking about companies who go the extra mile to be a better supplier when they don’t really have to. Some suppliers of durable medical equipment go that extra mile by voluntarily attending the National Home Builders Associations training to be a Certified Aging In Place Specialist or submit to rigorous rules, procedures and inspections to be a better installer of automobile lifts and equipment by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) Quality Assurance Program (QAP). These examples are not ‘required’ to sell equipment or install a lift in or on your vehicle but it sends a signal that they are trying to be a better business and do a better job for you. All suppliers who want Medicare to help pay for their products, in addition to mandatory accreditation have been jumping through more and more government hoops lately and dealing with audits that many times are more than small companies can withstand. These certifications and accreditations are not free plus they create extra paperwork and sometimes add employees to the payroll so you may notice a slight increase in their pricing over the competition especially internet based operations but for the piece of mind you get from knowing you’re dealing with people who actually care about you and want the best for you, it’s worth it. For more information on these and other mobility products contact one of the Certified Aging in Place Specialists at Marilyn’s Medical Freedom, 4860 Old Mayfield Rd. in Paducah, (800) 48-2022.
