o you ever feel like this time of year is emotionally confusing? You are filled with joys of the Holiday Season; and yet, the anticipation of a New Year and new goals makes you fretful. Maybe you are experiencing a little frustration with yourself as you gauge last year’s unresolved resolutions. It is time to put a permanent smile on that face as you begin to look towards a new year and an improved you!

“People are more likely to achieve their goals when the goals are made public and when a support system is in place.”

We often look at resolutions as monumental, unattainable tasks.

However, a resolution by definition is a “commitment to goals, projects, or the reforming of a habit.” Common resolutions come in the form of self-improvement, such as losing weight, eating better, eliminating smoking, reducing stress, and taking care of oneself! It’s often the commitment part of the goal that causes stumbling blocks.

A recent university study (University of Bristol, 2007) found that only 22 percent of people actually achieve their New Year’s Resolution! Do not let that discourage you from ever setting a goal or bettering yourself. That same study also found that people are more likely to achieve their goals when the goals are made public and when a support system is in place.

The first step is to acknowledge the area you want to change. What will make you feel great, more balanced and healthy? Write down these goals and keep them where you can see them every day. Post it on your bathroom mirror or in your daily calendar.

Secondly, establish your support system. Your support system might be a family member who has experienced the same issue or even a Professional who can guide you through to the finish line. This person will also help you become more accountable for your actions.

Sur vival Tips for the Holidays

he holiday season is often associated with all sorts of family traditions and numerous social gatherings. ‘Tis the season when we expect all family members will be present, and pray everyone will be happy and enjoy quality time together. Although the pressure to accomplish this is not only time-consuming and tedious, in the end, it is worth it all.

Family Most of our families don’t resemble those typical traditional families found in numerous holiday TV specials and nostalgic movies.

As much as we try to create gatherings that are joyful and magical for others, interacting with family and friends can be significantly taxing. In the real world, families aren’t like those on TV or in the Page 6 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area ­— December 2012

movies, so to compare your family to these might lead to feelings of inadequacy, resentment, and down-heartedness.

Consider these tips to keep spirits high throughout the holiday season.

• Make contacts before the holidays. Bridging the gap can certainly minimize any feelings of detachment.

• Find a holiday “vent buddy” to call as needed prior to the arrival of the family and during time together. A short phone call, a mini-escape can certainly offer rejuvenation.

• Keep focused on personal beliefs and the spirit of the season.

• Be flexible. Don’t let the small stuff consume valuable energy. Keep the big picture in mind.

• Recognize the holidays and some specific family members may generate some unpleasant memories. Take time to allow and acknowledge these feelings. When it feels right, let them go and make a conscious choice to live in the moment.

Holiday Shopping At times the holiday season might seem to be overwhelming, taxing, unmanageable and just too time consuming. Consider these survival tips to help get through the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping.

• Establish a budget and commit to not exceeding it. Don’t overextend yourself financially. This will avoid experiencing financial guilt following the holidays.

• As often as possible, shop when others don’t. Take an early or late lunch or take a day off during the week to really enjoy the experience.

• When shopping, stick to the list. Target one individual’s gift and then target one store.

• Be prepared. Have a few extra general gifts or gift cards for the unexpected situations.

• Make it playful. Don’t overdo it, limit shopping to three hours with a few set breaks to re-energize and enjoy the holiday spirit.

Relieving Stress Travel During the holiday season many people will be traveling the open highways to visit family and friends or to spend the holidays at resorts or other vacation destinations. Driving can be stressful, and traveling long distances, late starts, weather conditions or unexpected delays can increase the tension and the pressure of arriving punctually. These travel tips can help assure safe arrival at your destination:

•H ave vehicle thoroughly winterized (checking battery, antifreeze, windshield fluid, blades and tire pressure) especially if traveling a long distance.

• Make sure to fill the gas tank before departing. Assemble an emergency equipment pack including flashlight and batteries, blankets, spare tire, gas can, jumper cables, emergency sign, light reflector, cell phone and first aid kit.

• Plan out the route and alternative routes. Checking with state police for road conditions, congestion, detours, or road construction may save valuable time. Check the Federal Highway Administration’s website, www.fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo.

• Avoid preparing and packing up to the last minute. Allow time to relax and get a good night’s sleep before embarking on the trip.

• Allow time for rest stops—use the restroom, stretch and breathe fresh air.

Recognize the key to surviving the holidays is to not lose sight of the core focus, to share the moment with loved ones and to celebrate the spirit of each holiday being observed. Keeping these tips in mind and taking the time to plan will help create a joyful holiday season.

OPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a progressive disease that makes it hard to breathe. “Progressive” means the disease gets worse over time.

COPD can cause coughing that produces large amounts of mucus wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD. Most people who have COPD smoke or used to smoke. Long-term exposure to other lung irritants—such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or dust— also may contribute to COPD. Overview To understand COPD, it helps to understand how the lungs work.

The air that you breathe goes down your windpipe into tubes in your lungs called bronchial tubes or airways.

Within the lungs, your bronchial tubes branch into thousands of smaller, thinner tubes called bronchioles. These tubes end in bunches of tiny round air sacs called alveoli.

Small blood vessels called capillaries run through the walls of the air sacs. When air reaches the air sacs, oxygen passes through the air sac walls into the blood in the capillaries. At the same time, carbon dioxide moves from the capillaries into the air sacs. This process is called gas exchange.

The airways and air sacs are elastic. When you breathe in, each air sac fills up with air like a small balloon. When you breathe out, the air sacs deflate and the air goes out.

In COPD, less air flows in and out of the airways because of one or more of the following: • The airways and air sacs lose their elastic quality.

• The walls between many of the air sacs are destroyed.

• The walls of the airways become thick and inflamed.

• The airways make more mucus than usual.

In the United States, the term “COPD” includes two main conditions: emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

In emphysema, the walls between many of the air sacs are damaged. As a result, the air sacs lose their shape and become floppy. This damage also can destroy the walls of the air sacs, leading to fewer and larger air sacs instead of many tiny ones. If this happens, the amount of gas exchange in the lungs is reduced.

In chronic bronchitis, the lining of the airways is constantly irritated and inflamed. This causes the lining to thicken. Lots of thick mucus forms in the airways, making it hard to breathe.

Most people who have COPD have both emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Thus, the general term “COPD” is more accurate.

Outlook COPD is a major cause of disability, and it’s the third leading cause of death in the United States. Currently, millions of people are diagnosed with COPD. Many more people may have the disease and not even know it.

COPD develops slowly. Symptoms often worsen over time and can limit your ability to do routine activities. Severe COPD may prevent you from doing even basic activities like walking, cooking, or taking care of yourself.

Most of the time, COPD is diagnosed in middle-aged or older adults. The disease isn’t passed from person to person—you can’t catch it from someone else.

COPD has no cure yet, and doctors don’t know how to reverse the damage to the airways and lungs. However, treatments and lifestyle changes can help you feel better, stay more active, and slow the progress of the disease.

ou want to bring out the best for your next holiday gathering, ensuring a memorable meal for family and friends. With a few simple tips and easier-than-you-think recipes, you can do just that.

Red Tart Cherry Glazed Ham

Entertaining Tips • Prep the Night Before: Save time by chopping vegetables or prepping glazes the day before. For example, prepare the spread for Goat Cheese Bruschetta with Berry-Thyme Spread the night before. The day of the party, toast baguette slices 10 minutes before guests arrive, and the delicious appetizer will come together in minutes.

• Allow for Creativity: Allow guests to put their own finishing touches on their dishes by setting out a variety of toppings. Raspberry Almond Waffles provide a base for your friends and family to get creative.

H EAT oven to 325°F. Overlap slices of ham in shallow baking pan; cover with aluminum foil. Bake 50 to 60 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 140°F. 2. C OMBINE preserves, vinegar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a small microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2 minutes.

3. A RRANGE ham slices on serving platter. Spoon 1/4 cup glaze over center of ham. Serve with remaining warm glaze.

Goat Cheese Bruschetta with Berry-Thyme Spread Makes: 12 slices Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 6 minutes 1/4 cup Smucker’s Orchard’s Finest Northwest Triple Berry Preserves 1 tablespoon minced shallot 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon minced fresh thyme, plus additional for garnish 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 8-ounce baguette 1 tablespoon Crisco® 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil 4 ounces goat cheese Fresh thyme leaves (optional), for garnish 1. COMBINE preserves, shallots, balsamic vinegar, thyme, salt, and pepper in small bowl.

2. SLICE baguette into 1/2-inch slices. Brush both sides of each slice lightly with olive oil. Heat skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

Grill baguette slices, 4 at a time, 2 to 3 minutes per side or until lightly browned. Place on serving platter.

3. SPREAD about 2 teaspoons goat cheese over each baguette slice. Top each slice with 1 teaspoon preserves mixture. Garnish with additional fresh thyme, if desired. Serve immediately.

Tip: Triple Berry-Thyme Spread can be prepared up to two days ahead. Cover and chill.

ountains Family Dentistry, located across from the Fountains of Fairview Heights, is not your typical dentist’s office. There are no white, sterile walls; no cold, chemical smells; nor imposing whirrs of equipment. Instead, patients are greeted by friendly staff, who sit behind a desk and not separated from their clientele by a sliding glass window; a self-serve coffee bar with refrigerator for drinks; the calming sounds of soft music; and a beautiful fountain. Fountains Family Dentistry seems more like a spa than a traditional dental office. “I believe that the basis for any good dental practice is comfort. When patients are relaxed, everything goes more smoothly, allowing me to provide the best possible care,” says Dr. Ty Parker of the home-style atmosphere and welcoming staff.

Dr. Parker graduated in 2003 with a Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Science from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 2007. Dental Issues: Frequently Asked X-rays New technologies limit the amount of radiation patients receive from their dental X-rays. Digital X-rays taken by state-of-the-art equipment, like those used by Dr. Parker and his staff at Fountains Family Dentistry, reduce the amount of radiation patients are exposed to by 80 percent. Additionally, special X-rays units and lead aprons reduce exposure to patients. Without X-rays a dentist cannot accurately diagnose dental concerns; the small amount of radiation patients receive is worth the benefits that come from dental X-rays. If you have any concerns about dental X-rays, you should consult your dentist.

Recent news articles have made many patients nervous about the use of dental X-rays. They question the amount of radiation received from the X-rays as well as why they are necessary at all. Typically, new patients will receive a set of full-mouth X-rays for their dentist’s records and then give cavity detecting X-rays every 6-18 months after that. The amount, type, and frequency of X-rays vary from patient to patient.

Dr. Parker notes, “Dental X-rays not only help determine if a patient has hidden cavities between their teeth, but can also aid in the diagnosis of cysts, tumors, abscesses, bone loss, foreign bodies, and impacted teeth. I wish more patients knew the value of finding problems before they turn into big problems. Typically, once a tooth is bothering a patient, it’s no longer an easy fix.” They also help determine the conditional of existing dental work such as crowns, fillings, and bridges. Without dental X-rays, many of these potentially dangerous conditions would go unnoticed.

Invisible Braces and Cosmetic Dentistry Aligner therapy, or “invisible braces,” is an advancement in orthodontics and can be a great way to straighten your teeth without using metal braces. ClearCorrect is the system used at Fountains Family Dentistry. Instead of metal braces, you are given a series of clear, removable aligners that can be taken out when eating or for special occasions if you don’t want them to be seen. Invisible braces can prevent and correct crowding, overbite, spaces and/or gaps, and cross bite.

These aligners are a great option for almost anyone: responsible adults who have already had metal braces or do not want a “metal” smile, or teens who do not want to have embarrassing brace face.

Invisible braces work through a series of clear aligners that move teeth the same way traditional braces do, except that instead of painful straightening of braces of annoying rubber bands, patients are given new aligners every two to four weeks. Some patients complete treatment in as little as six months.

Periodontal Disease According to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control in August 2012, nearly half of American adults have periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and bone supporting the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss. Research has also shown that periodontal disease is associated with other chronic inflammatory diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

or many people, the hardest part of grieving is during special events like the holidays. During the holiday season, we miss our loved ones more than other times. There is no automatic cure for this grief, but there are ways that we can honor our loved ones and still enjoy the season.

Support circles are important. Family (however you define your family), friends, church groups, social clubs, and sometimes a grief support group can help. It’s important not to pretend that you’re okay simply for the comfort of those around you. Instead of ignoring or purposefully avoiding our feelings of grief, we should “lean into them.” We can incorporate our loved ones and our losses into our holiday celebrations.

Grieving during the holidays: • Be gentle with yourself.

• Protect yourself and your needs.

• Allow time for feelings, and express those feelings, whether in a journal, to a friend, or in a support group.

Offer a time and a place to memorialize: • Light a candle or create a “sacred space” with a photo of your loved one.

• In today’s techie world, offer a story online or a blog about your loved one.

• Have your place of worship include your loved one in their prayers.

• Have family members share a funny story about your loved one following dinner.

Have a Plan A and a Plan B. Just because things have always been done this or that way doesn’t mean you cannot create a new tradition in the family. You may have always held Christmas dinner at your house, but you don’t have to do it if you don’t feel like it. Tell family members that you need help this year and someone else will take the lead. There is no right or wrong way to deal with the holidays during grief. Family members and friends may not know how to deal with the loss, and you may not either. Time, and patience with yourself and others will guide you.

Trouble Swallowing Poses Risks for Seniors Submitted by Amedisys Home Health

T

he simple act of swallowing is something many of us take for granted.

Yet each year, almost 10 million Americans are diagnosed with swallowing disorders.

Known by the clinical term, dysphagia, difficulty swallowing is common among seniors with dementia and is frequently associated with stroke, progressive neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s, as well as respiratory and other medical conditions.

Left untreated, swallowing disorders can lead to a range of problems including weight loss, poor nutrition, dehydration, choking, and aspiration pneumonia, which happens when food or drink gets into the lungs.

“Problems with swallowing and the medical issues that often result can erode a person’s quality of life and in some cases even threaten their life,” said Bridget Bryant, CCC, MS-SLP, Speech Language Pathologist at Amedisys Home Health in O’Fallon. “So, it’s crucial to help patients recover this important function, and we work with patients to recover their swallowing and communications skills through our Speech Language Pathology Program.”

This specialized program employs speech-language pathologists— therapists who evaluate and treat patients with swallowing disorders, cognitive-communication deficits, and communication disorders—in the comfort of patient’s own homes.

“Among the issues our speech-language pathologists address is a patient’s ability to chew and swallow food,” Bryant said. “Aspiration pneumonia, an infection caused by food or liquids entering the lungs, is a serious problem among seniors. Over the last 10 years, the number of elderly Medicare patients who were admitted to the hospital for aspiration pneumonia increased by nearly 94 percent.”

Symptoms of swallowing disorders that seniors and their loved ones should watch for, and talk to a healthcare professional about, include: • Reports of a feeling that food is “sticking in the throat or chest.” This sensation is the most common symptom of dysphagia.

• Coughing during or after eating or drinking. If food sticks in the throat or larynx, the body tries to dislodge the item through coughing.

In some severe cases, food may come back up in the mouth after being swallowed.

• Gurgled speech. Swallowing disorders may cause adults to develop a “wet” vocal quality after eating or drinking.

• Weight loss. Because they can’t eat enough to meet their dietary Page 16 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area ­— December 2012

needs, difficulties in swallowing food can lead to adults not getting proper nutrition.

• Pain in the chest or back. Retaining food in the esophagus can lead to heartburn-like symptoms, which can sometimes be so severe that patients may think they are having a heart attack.

“By proactively treating swallowing disorders and using specialized feeding techniques that maintain nutritional needs, enhance safe food intake and maintain dignity for our patients, we can help reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and improve people’s overall quality of life,” Bryant said.

ecember is an appropriate time of year to discuss the importance of hand washing. The flu and cold season is upon us and the holidays seem to increase our exposure to these illnesses through shopping and social gatherings. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believes that hand washing is the single, most effective manner in which to prevent the transmission of disease.

The principles of hand washing are simple: • Wash your hands when they are dirty and before eating • Do not cough into your hands • Do not sneeze into your hands • D o not put your fingers into your eyes, ears, or mouth, i.e. your T ZONE

The T ZONE is the only portal of entry for pulmonary and gastrointestinal disease. If we keep our hands clean and away from these areas we can dramatically reduce the incidence of all viral and bacterial illnesses.

Keeping yourself healthy can be as simple as using the following technique when washing your hands: wet your hands with warm, running water, add soap and wash hands away from the water for at least 20 seconds. Don’t forget to wash the back of your hands and between your fingers. Finally rinse hands with warm water and then dry with a clean towel.

Remember, infection control and preventing the spread of germs begins with you. Wash your hands frequently, especially this time of year, and follow the principles of hand washing as part of your daily routine.

ost of our days are busy with back-to-back business meetings and appointments followed by children’s afterschool activities and errands, making it a daunting task at times to slow down and take a deep breath. When bad weather strikes and snow and sleet arrives during our commutes and activities, we often continue at that same hurried pace because “we’ve got things to do!”

Winter brings holiday festivities, family gatherings, and picturesque “snow globe” images, but can also bring neck, back, head, and limb injuries from a slip and fall on a patch of ice. Want to stay safe this winter? Here are some tips on slowing down and being cautious. Remember, accidents can happen no matter how cautious you are. These recommendations are not fail-safe.

Wear smart shoes.

Think you don’t need to slip out of your slippers before picking up the paper in the front yard the morning after it snows? Think again. The soles on some dress shoes and slippers lack any texture, making your commute to the front sidewalk treacherous. Wear good, waterproof boots in the snow and carry along your three-inch high heeled shoes or slick-soled loafers to switch out at work.

It doesn’t always look like ice.

Yes, it’s true—we can’t always see slick spots in bad weather.

Black ice and “clear” ice can show up when you least expect it. A very thin patch of ice that doesn’t even seem to be there can still cause a fall. Take your time.

Walk carefully and maintain balance. When you know it’s slick outside, it’s not the best time to carry five bags of groceries at once from the cart to the car! Avoid carrying too many things which can throw off your balance, and walk with your gait a bit wider and knees slightly bent. This will help keep your feet firmly on the ground.

Bottoms…down!

In the event of a fall, it’s best to land on a part of your body with the most padding, like your bottom. Trying to catch your fall with an arm can lead to a broken wrist/limb. When falling, “tucking” your head under a bit, can potentially help prevent head injuries. Even wearing a longer, padded coat in the winter can cushion a fall more effectively.

At your home, scattering salt, sand, or even cat litter can help melt the ice and snow and make icy surfaces less hazardous. Also, while

Ingrown Toenails Swelling, redness, and tenderness around the nail are all symptoms of an ingrown toenail. The nail may actually dig directly into the toe. Soaking the foot with the ingrown toenail in lukewarm water and Epsom salts three to four times a day for 20 minutes or so can be helpful. If symptoms don’t improve after a few days, see a podiatrist. They specialize in foot problems and can treat ingrown toenails.

Foot Odor Most feet sweat. Feet should be kept clean and dry as much as possible. This will help cut down on odors. Socks should be changed frequently. Variations in focus and technique lead to different types of massage, including Swedish, deep tissue, and sports massage.

In Swedish massage, the focus is general and the therapist may use long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration, and tapping. Some common reasons for getting a massage are to relieve pain, heal sports injuries, reduce stress, relax, ease anxiety or depression, and aid general wellness. Unfortunately, scientific evidence on massage therapy is limited. Researchers are actively trying to understand exactly how massage works, how much is best, and how it might help with specific health conditions. Some positive benefits have been reported.

“Massage therapy has been noted to relax the nervous system by slowing heart rate and blood pressure. Stress and pain hormones are also decreased by massage, reducing pain, and enhancing immune function,” says Dr. Tiffany Field, who heads a touch research institute at the University of Miami Medical School.

Much of her National Institutes of Health(NIH)-funded research focuses on the importance of massage for pregnant women and infants. Some of her studies suggest that massage may improve weight gain and immune system function in preterm infants.

A study published earlier this year looked at how massage affects muscles at the molecular level. The findings suggest that kneading eases sore muscles after exercise by turning off genes associated with inflammation and turning on genes that help muscles heal.

A recent NIH-supported study found that an hour-long “dose” of Swedish massage therapy once a week was optimal for knee pain from osteoarthritis, especially when practical matters like time, labor and convenience were considered. Other research suggests that massage therapy is effective in reducing and managing chronic low-back pain, which affects millions of Americans.

If you’re considering massage therapy for a specific medical condition, talk with your healthcare provider. Never use massage to replace your regular medical care or as a reason to postpone seeing a healthcare professional.

Every therapist and every massage is unique. If you decide to try massage therapy, work with different therapists until you find one that meets your needs. ow back pain is miserable and many times limits our quality of life and our ability to function. It is the fifth most common reason for all physician visits in the United States and it is estimated that 83 million Americans experience at least some sort of low back pain.

However, most low back pain is not caused by serious conditions such as infections, cancer, or fractures. In fact many times, it is due to decreased joint mobility, poor muscle function, and inflammation.

Manual therapy is a hands-on approach to treating stiff or inflamed joints, muscle imbalance, posture dysfunction, and pain. Manual therapists can get patients on the road to recovery without surgery or the side effects of medications.

An in-depth examination that looks at several factors including joint mobility, reflexes, sensation, and strength gives the manual therapist information to correctly improve specific joint motion and soft tissue with a hands-on approach.

Depending on the goal, the therapist will then gently, or more aggressively, apply a force along the spine. These techniques can be used for patients who have acute or chronic low back pain. NO MORE CPAP Treat Sleep Apnea Without CPAP or Surgery

leep apnea is a dangerous disease that causes people to stop breathing while they are sleeping. It is estimated that 90 percent of people who have sleep apnea are unaware of its presence. These people may suffer with daytime drowsiness, snoring, feeling tired in the morning when waking up, having trouble falling asleep at night, weight gain, high blood pressure, and other medical conditions.

Most physicians recommend that patients who have sleep apnea use CPAP therapy. CPAP uses a mask that fits over your face and forces air down your nose while you sleep.

Most people don’t enjoy CPAP and about half the people who have a CPAP do not use it.

“Patients who use the oral appliance report sleeping better, feeling more rested, no longer snoring, and getting up less frequently at night.”

In many cases, patients who are told to use CPAP can instead use a comfortable and affordable oral appliance.

This appliance looks like a retainer and is only worn while sleeping. Many have even lost weight, lowered their blood pressure and had their doctor take them off of medications!

In 2006, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommended that people who have mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea try an oral appliance before they try CPAP. It is shown that most patients are more compliant using an oral appliance than trying to use a CPAP. Traveling with a CPAP can also be a huge inconvenience due to the hassle of lugging around an extra suitcase and distilled water and searching for an electrical outlet.

However, traveling with an oral appliance only requires packing a small container into your toiletry bag and needs no electricity.

An oral appliance can only be made by a specially trained dentist. It is very uncommon for patients with sleep apnea to be aware of oral appliance therapy because most people with sleep apnea don’t talk to their dentist about the condition. Even if they think to mention it, most dentists are not trained to treat sleep apnea. It is more common for patients to talk with their physician and then be instructed to use a CPAP even if they can’t tolerate the device.

Like many sleep apnea patients, Travis Smith was unable to tolerate the CPAP mask and the forced air pressure. His sleep study results showed he stopped breathing over 70 times each hour and suffered with severe obstructive sleep apnea. The Tradition of Mission Cataract “Gift of Sight” to Uninsured Patients

or 21 years, through the tradition of Mission Cataract, the surgeons at Illinois Eye Surgeons have performed free cataract surgery on patients who are uninsured and have no means to pay for their surgery. As in past years, they have donated $250,000 worth of free care to patients in need.

“We feel that this is a way to give back to the community and are happy to continue the tradition that was started by Dr. Edward Doisy in Maryville, IL,” said Dr. Michael Jones.

This year, Dr. Michael Jones, Dr. Eric Wigton, and Dr. Wen Chen performed surgery on 35 patients who met the criteria for Mission Cataract. Typically, cataract patients are older, but some patients undergoing the surgery developed cataracts at a young age and are not eligible for Medicare and may not be eligible for Medicaid. All of these cataracts were considered high-risk cataract cases since the patients have had to postpone their treatment due to lack of insurance.

“As a new surgeon in the practice, I’m thrilled to participate in Mission Cataract. I hope to be part of it for many years to come,” said Dr. Wigton.

Patients wishing to be considered for Mission Cataract had to go through a financial application process to learn whether they were eligible for the free surgery. It took several months to be approved but once they became eligible, everything was provided to them at no cost.

The doctors, nurses, anesthesiologists, and staff all donated their time and their expertise. A good majority of the equipment and lens implants were donated by a medical supply company.

This is a true team effort to bring the “gift of sight” to these patients.

It is a life changing experience to go from blindness to being able to see. For many, it will help them regain their independence.

Knee Arthritis:

Can You Avoid Surgery?

M

any people, as they age, develop knee arthritis. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, better known as “wear and tear” arthritis. Arthritis is basically the loss of cartilage from the end of the bones. Cartilage is smooth and slippery and allows an easy gliding motion. When this is gone, the knee becomes painful, stiff, and swollen. At this time, there is no practical way to replace or repair cartilage in a degenerative knee joint.

Fortunately there are many ways to treat the symptoms associated with arthritis, in a conservative or non-operative manner. The first line of treatment generally is NSAIDs (Motrin, Aleve, etc.), weight loss, and physical therapy. NSAIDs can be given via pills and more recently in specially compounded topical formulas. A short course of therapy (six to eight sessions) with a home exercise program can be very beneficial at relieving pain. Longer treatment courses are generally not indicated.

Weight loss is also effective because one puts two to three times their body weight across the knee with every step. A loss of 20 pounds would take off 40-60 pounds with each step and with about a million steps taken a year the benefits are obvious. These treatment modalities will often allow the inflammation in the knee to subside and restore better function with less pain.

The second line of treatment is injections. Cortisone has been used for years and is very helpful in knee arthritis. Cortisone is a steroid that rapidly decreases inflammation and hence pain and swelling in a knee.

Cortisone is generally effective for six weeks or more; however, if the inflammation subsides, the pain relief can be for a much longer period of time. Over the past ten years, there has been increasing interest in viscosupplementation (gel shots, hyaluronic acid, etc.). These are generally given in a series of injections, once a week for three to five weeks.

They have been effective in delaying knee surgery for many patients.

Hyaluronic acid injections are much more expensive than cortisone, but they tend to give longer lasting relief. They can be given up to every six months, but often the relief lasts longer than that.

There is much research being done with other modalities. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has been tried and found effective with tendon healing, but not much benefit has been seen in treating joint arthritis. Stem cells are being looked at too, but the research in this area is very early.

Peptides have also been tried with anecdotal success.

In summary, can one avoid surgery for knee arthritis? Yes and No. Surgery can often be delayed and most people would like to maximize their non-operative treatment options. With time, many will fail—leading to knee replacement surgery. Knee replacement is safe and effective and gives the vast majority of people an excellent outcome, after conservative measures have failed.

“Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises, ear infections, trauma, or ear disease; harm to the inner ear and ear drum, illness or certain medications, and deterioration due to the normal aging process,” explains Dr. Greg Stewart of Hearing Health Center of Lansing, Michigan. Stress Incontinence: You Don’t Have To Live With It

tress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a common condition affecting over 15 percent of women between 30–60 years of age. The symptoms of SUI include lose of urine with coughing, sneezing, laughing, jumping, lifting, exercising, and intercourse. These symptoms are due to weakening of the tissues supporting the urethra and may be caused by pregnancy, childbirth, repetitive pressure on the bladder, or previous pelvic surgery. Incontinence symptoms have a significant impact on quality of life and individuals suffering from urinary leakage often feel ashamed, isolated, and often limit leisure activities and exercise. Unfortunately, although this condition is common, many women never seek treatment either due to embarrassment, the myth that incontinence is a normal part of aging, or the belief that treatment is either unavailable or not successful. Fortunately, over the last 10–15 years, great advances have been made in our understanding of this condition and treatment has become less and invasive and more successful.

A doctor specializing in the care of women with incontinence is likely to recommend a variety of treatment strategies to lessen urinary leakage. Behavior and life style changes such as weight loss, quitting

smoking, or a program of exercises to strengthen the pelvic muscles (Kegel exercises) may improve symptoms. Some women will choose to work with a physical therapist specially trained in women’s health to learn how to perform these exercises effectively and correctly. As with any exercise routine, how well Kegels will work for you depends a large part on your willingness to perform them regularly.

While medication is available to treat some forms of urinary incontinence, at present we do not have any effective medication to treat stress incontinence. If the above lifestyle changes and Kegel exercises are not acceptable or unsuccessful, then many women will opt for surgical treatment for their urinary leakage. A multitude of surgeries have been performed to correct incontinence. Fortunately, current surgical procedures for SUI are highly effective and minimally invasive.

The most common procedure performed for this type of leakage is known as the “Mid-Urethral Sling” and is considered by most to be the “standard of care” for the surgical treatment of incontinence. In this surgery, a small strip of synthetic material is placed underneath the urethra using specially designed instruments providing support. The procedure is usually preformed in the hospital or a surgery center and often takes 30 minutes or less. The vast majority of women can go home the same day and in the hands of a well-trained surgeon, the long-term success rate is high with little pain or risks of complications.

Most women are candidates for a Mid-Urethral Sling, but if not, another procedure called a “Bulking Agent” may be offered. In this procedure, a material is injected under the skin of the urethra using a device known as a cystoscope that allows the doctor to look into the bladder. Once the material is injected the tissue can be seen to “bulk up” and come together thereby lessening urinary leakage. This is also performed on an outpatient basis with very little to no discomfort. This procedure may need to be repeated on periodic basis as the effect of the bulking agent may wear off over time.

When is a Tummy Tuck the Answer?

oday more than ever, we are bombarded with options to eliminate stubborn belly fat and skin. Some of these options offer noticeable, life-changing reformation to your body and some of them simply don't work. With all of this information, how are you supposed to know what to do? When is a tummy tuck the solution for you?

Where is the fat?

The first thing to think about when looking at your stomach is "where is the fat." There are numerous ways to remove fat. Each of these methods only addresses the superficial fat, which is the fat that's located on the outside of your abdomen.

How do you know what's inside versus outside?

It's as simple as a pinch. Pinch your stomach and see how much is between your fingers. Half of the distance between your fingers is the thickness of your superficial fat. The only way to address the deeper fat is through diet and exercise.

So what can I do to get rid of that superficial fat?

The decision becomes liposuction versus non-invasive devices. The advantage of the non-invasive methods is that they provide some improvement with little or no downtime. This is why some have begun to choose this alternative. The most effective way to address these areas of superficial fat remains liposuction. What about all the skin?

he crash is 20 times worse than coming off crack and meth. And you know the only thing that will make you feel normal again is if you do more of this. And that’s how it escalates so quickly,” explained a former bath salts abuser who is now sober after completing substance abuse treatment at Gateway Foundation Alcohol & Drug Treatment.

Both bath salts and synthetic marijuana are classified as synthetic drugs, which are abused for their psychogenic, hallucinogenic, and mood-altering effects. Although many states have banned these substances, they still may be found in retail outlets and via the Internet under many different brand labels as “plant food” and “herbal incense.”

They are marketed and sold as “natural” and “safe” substances but have proven to be otherwise.

In 2010, poison centers nationwide responded to about 3,200 calls related to bath salts and synthetic marijuana. In 2011, that number jumped to more than 13,000 calls. To help reverse this trend, on July 10, 2012, President Obama signed a law banning more than two dozen of the most common chemicals used to make synthetic drugs. Many states have laws banning bath salts and synthetic marijuana, including Illinois and Missouri.

What are Bath Salts?

Bath salts contain manmade chemicals related to amphetamines that often consist of mephedrone, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and methylone, also known as substituted cathinones. The powder-like substance is described as “fake cocaine” and is consumed by snorting, injecting, or smoking.

Bath Salts Signs and Symptoms • Anxious and jittery behavior • Insomnia, rapid heart rate, nausea, reduced motor control, seizures • Severe paranoia, panic attacks, depression, and suicidal thoughts • Erratic behavior with potential for hallucinations, violence, and selfmutilation • Lack of appetite What is Synthetic Marijuana or K2?

K2 can be produced using chemical compounds called JWH-018, JWH-073, JWH-200 and CP-47,497. These compounds are structured similar to THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and can be sprayed onto varying mixtures of dried herbs, flowers, and tobacco leaves. The most common consumption method is smoking.

Some brands of synthetic marijuana may result in a slightly mellow feeling while others may create significant psychological distress. Even within the same brand, the effects may vary from packet to packet. K2 can induce a limitless high the more a user smokes. Its effects can be up to 10 times more intense than marijuana.

Single Incision Laparoscopic Gallbladder Procedures Submitted by General and Vascular Surgical Associates, P.C.

aparoscopic surgery uses state-of-the-art technology. For most procedures, three to five dime-sized incisions are all that is needed to allow surgeons access to the surgical sites. Specialized instruments are placed through those openings and act as both tools and eyes for the surgeons.

“The instruments we use at Anderson Hospital are state-of-theart,” said Dr. Charles Lane, a general and vascular surgeon on staff at Anderson Hospital. “The cameras provide extremely sharp, digital images in real time.” Surgeons can utilize these tools to do an array of procedures including gallbladder, colon resection, hernia repair, appendectomy, and gynecologic procedures.

Even with laparoscopy’s fewer and smaller incisions, some patients prefer no scarring at all. For this reason, Dr. Lane also performs a single incision gallbladder surgery using laparoscopic technology. “The incision is made through the belly button,” explains Dr. Lane. “By entering through the belly button, cosmetically, it appears there has been no incision at all.”

Dr. Lane is currently one of the only surgeons in the area offering this single incision procedure. “It is nice to offer this cosmetically more appealing surgery. Patients literally appear to have not undergone abdominal surgery at all,” said Lane. “So far, I have performed 33 of the single incision laparoscopic surgeries to remove the gallbladder. No patients have had complications or had to convert to more traditional methods. Patients desiring this more cosmetic procedure have been very pleased with the result.”

The surgery usually takes 60–90 minutes and it is an outpatient procedure. Most patients fully recover in two weeks. Not every patient is a candidate for the single incision method. Patients with severe infection may require more extensive surgery, and patient size may limit access to the gallbladder through this method.

Since one out of every four schoolchildren have a vision problem which affects their learning abilities, a vision evaluation is one of the first options you should consider for a child who struggles in school.

Bradley, age 10, was one such student. He’d always loved reading and had done well in school. Suddenly he was disorganized and had trouble concentrating on his schoolwork. He began bringing home Cs and Ds, which he had never done before. He was daydreaming in class and developed a poor attention span. Enter the oft-misguided solution to learning problems today—does he have ADHD? But Bradley also complained of headaches and being too tired to do homework. He was skipping words or re-reading them, often without understanding their meaning. He started having trouble remembering spelling words and doing word problems in math, even though he preferred math to subjects that required more reading.

After exploring several options, Bradley’s parents took him to an eye doctor specializing in evaluation and enhancement of reading vision—a developmental optometrist. We performed an in-depth evaluation of Bradley’s near and far vision skills and diagnosed him to have several conditions which affect reading vision. At least two of Bradley’s issues are very common: • C onvergence Insufficiency (CI), which affects up to 13 percent of the U.S. population, is the inability or difficulty of the eyes to work together as a team for near or reading vision. Symptoms include headaches and eyestrain; blurry vision; poor memory, comprehension, and attention span; and motion sickness.

• Binocular Vision Dysfunction is not using the eyes together at the same time, often overusing one and suppressing the other. This causes many of the same symptoms as CI. Persons with either condition can pass a 20/20 standard eye chart test, which only tests distance vision. It is customary to be unaware of these vision problems, often going years undiagnosed, due to our natural inclination to adjust to vision deficiencies by adopting improper vision habits.

Bradley was prescribed eyeglasses to reduce his eyestrain and help his reading vision, and he began vision therapy with us. Vision therapy exercises train a person’s eyes to work together better at focusing and tracking words across a page, while improving other skills needed for reading and comprehension. After only eight sessions, Bradley was making all A’s and B’s in school and reported a dramatic decline in his symptoms.
