Seeing Is Believing Viable Options For Treating Cataracts & Other Eye Conditions Submitted by The Opthalmology Group

A

ccording to the American Medical Association (AMA), over 1.5 million cataract surgeries are performed in the United States each year. In addition to cataract challenges, aging patients are at a higher risk of glaucoma and retinal conditions, as well. While the challenge of maintaining highquality vision for patients of all ages appears to be a daunting proposition, technological advancements in eye surgeries and treatments continue to improve outcomes. For patients experiencing problems with their eyes and/or vision, the first step toward receiving care is visiting a reputable ophthalmologist – a medical doctor whose practice is devoted to the treatment of medical and surgical eye conditions. While cataract surgery is the procedure most often performed by eye surgeons, there are other eye surgical procedures for glaucoma, corneal problems, and retinal conditions. Endothelial Keratoplasty (“DSEK”) is one such advancement in corneal transplant surgery. The cornea is the clear window that covers the colored part of the eye. When the cornea becomes cloudy from degeneration a corneal transplant is performed using donor tissue to replace the patient’s cloudy cornea. Endothelial Keratoplasty is the technique recommended for many transplant patients. The procedure has fewer complications with a more rapid recovery and better vision, has no corneal stitches, no additional astigmatism, and a minimized risk to the eye should trauma occur. DSEK patients experience greatly improved vision from the procedure. Many of these patients recover vision of 20/40 or better within months. Patients who postpone treatment of endothelial dysfunction for too long may develop scarring in the front part of the cornea, which could delay full visual recovery, since the front part of the cornea is not replaced with endothelial keratoplasty. Endothelial keratoplasty does not require any sutures to hold the new transplant in place, so problems with loose sutures or infection at the suture sites are avoided. Patients also retain corneal sensation after endothelial keratoplasty, so this helps promote normal blinking and tear production, which are important for keeping the surface of the cornea healthy. Many optical treatments have been developed relating specifically to cataract challenges, as well. Typically, eye patients no longer have to wait until a cataract “ripens” or accelerates to a certain point before it can be removed. Cloudy and blurred vision can now be corrected at an earlier stage without negative consequences. In addition, cataract surgery success rates have improved, offering

patients a higher quality of life. In most instances of cataract surgery, patients with otherwise healthy eyes have improved vision after the lens replacement procedure. In fact, a patient’s vision may improve so dramatically after cataract surgery that he or she is able to pass the vision test to get a driver’s license. After the removal of a cataract, patients tend to have a decreased dependence on corrective eyewear and are able to once again see colors vividly. While the development of certain eye conditions is unpreventable, there are viable solutions for treating these vision obstacles – and they are close at hand. A Very Quiet, Calm Time Submitted by Western Baptist Hospital

ew parents and their newborns can now experience a wonderful, peaceful bonding experience. KangarooCare, named for the similarity to how certain marsupials carry their young, seeks to provide restored closeness of the newborn with mother or father by placing the infant in direct skin-to-skin contact with one of them. In 2009, Tucker requested KangarooCare after her daughter, Claire, was born. "She was in distress and she did amazing with it," she said. If the mother chooses KangarooCare, the baby, wearing only a diaper, is placed directly on the mother's chest—and mom and baby bond for 30 minutes to an hour while in recovery. Breastfeeding mothers can feed their babies for the first time during this KangarooCare time. "The main reason we do this is because it helps moms and babies bond," said Debbie Cornwell, RN, Western Baptist's lactation consultant. "Babies are leaving a warm and cozy environment coming into the light and a cold world. Research shows that babies prefer skin-to-skin. It stabilizes their vital signs and regulates their temperature. For the first few months, a baby's sensory input is from touch. It stimulates their brain. Touch is very important for them." In addition, KangarooCare helps: • Babies cry less and sleep more. • Babies hear their mothers' voice and heartbeat. • Babies get important antibodies from mother's skin. • Babies breastfeed easier. • Moms feel more confident in caring for their baby. After the initial bonding time, the baby is taken to the nursery, and the mother is transferred to a room. They are reunited once mom is settled and the baby has been assessed in the nursery. KangarooCare can be used at any time during the hospital stay. Dads can use it, too, especially while moms are sleeping or in the shower. Western Baptist started KangarooCare in 2010. t is the most wonderful time of the year! Food at holiday gatherings and parties welcomes us at every corner. Most of us love to enjoy special treats and foods that seem to be available only during November and December. The question is: “How can you eat healthy and still enjoy the season?” • Consider eating raw vegetables and fruits at the start of a meal. By eating raw vegetables, you will stimulate the digestive system to begin producing enzymes, which will help to break down food as it is eaten. Also, avoid over-cooking foods to help keep as many of the nutrients as possible. • Drink lots of water! By drinking water, you will stay hydrated and this will help to feel less hungry. Remember water is an essential component that is needed for every function of the body; we are twothirds water. Many times we eat thinking we are hungry but we are actually thirsty or even dehydrated. Before you eat, drink water then wait twenty minutes to see if you are still hungry. Some professionals suggest you should drink enough ounces of water to equal half of your body weight per day.

Getting Through the Holidays When You’ve Lost a Loved One Submitted by Mary Beth Orr, Milner and Orr Funeral Home

hen you’ve lost a loved one, the holiday season is not warm with love and excitement, but rather it can be a painful reminder of the terrible feeling of loss you are experiencing. The first few years may be the most painful, but even years later, the holidays may lack the joy that they once held. Andrea Orr of Milner and Orr Funeral Home says they understand this and recently presented the 16th annual Holiday Service

of Remembrance. This is a community wide service that includes a candlelight reading of names that honors the lives of those who have passed. This was open to all families in our area who have experienced a loss at anytime whether services were held at Milner and Orr or elsewhere. There are other steps you can take to help give the holidays a new meaning according to Orr. The holidays can become a time of


peace and reflection, a time to cherish the gift your loved one has been, and continues to be, in the life of your family. Here are a few ideas that may help you on this journey. Be patient and realistic: Sometimes our own high expectations of the holiday season make the pain and frustration more acute. We have a picture of what the season should be in our mind, assuming to be happy and joyful. Remember you are grieving and need to take the time be gentle with yourself. If you can’t do everything you once did, take this year to slow down. The season is about the gift of love and peace in a time of pain and sorrow. Realize your limits: Think about what you really need this season and let those around you know. If you need to be with others, tell them. If you need to be alone, let others know. Accept invitations only as you have the energy and desire. If decorating seems like too much, limit it to maybe one area or a small tree. Take care of yourself physically. Grieving is hard on your body. Eat well and wisely. Do not neglect yourself in obligation to your loved one.

Adapt your traditions: Sometimes we are tempted to scrap the whole idea of Christmas and do nothing. This creates a double sense of loss, the loss of a loved one and a loss of tradition. Try keeping traditions alive in ways that make sense given your new reality. Try donating time or money to a charity, participate in a church event, or join a support group. Allow tears and joy: Understand that part of Christmas will be warm memories but that there will be heartache too. Allow yourself to cry when needed. Don’t be too hard on yourself; yet also remember the wonderful moments of your loved one’s life. Ultimately, gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, and confusion into clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home and a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. May you have a peace-filled Christmas season. he holiday season is here! Most everyone is looking forward to or already enjoying festive gatherings, delicious meals, beautiful decorations, and a chance to be with those we love most. But along with the joy of the holidays come long lines in stores, hours spent shopping for those perfect gifts, stress related to a variety of holiday pressures, and exhaustion from our increasingly busy schedules. What can people do during this joyful but challenging season (and all year long) to maintain wellness, achieve relaxation, and experience rejuvenation? The answer is a visit to Medical Spa 7. Opened in 2004, Medical Spa 7 has served the Western Kentucky region for several years and was founded upon the principles of serving the “whole person”—mind, body, and soul. The spa’s owner, Loree Eckstein, sought to bring a world-class spa facility to the Paducah area so that residents did not have to travel far to experience the benefits of a state-of-the-art medical spa. Eckstein, who has visited spas all over the country, was inspired by the best of what she experienced in her travels, and she blended many of those ideas together to create Medical Spa 7. A customer recently noted in her review of the spa, “From


the moment I walked in, I felt like I had walked into a spa at some fancy hotel in a big city…and I was able to unwind.” “The spa was designed to make sure our clients feel relaxed in a beautiful, peaceful setting. It’s a wonderful ambiance that gives our guests the chance to escape their hectic lives and re-center themselves,” explains Amanda Esper, the Business Manager of Medical Spa 7. “We have several clients who travel quite a distance to enjoy our services because they simply love our atmosphere, our staff, our products, and our services,” states Esper. She also notes that the spa also strives to make each person who visits feel comfortable. She encourages potential clients to come in for a consultation or a service. “We have something for everyone here. What’s most important is that each and every guest at the spa finds his or her own unique way to relax and feel great,” Esper explained. For those who have seen the term “medical spa” but don’t quite know exactly what that means, Esper defined the term, stating that a medical spa has physicians on staff who have an office at the spa and offer physician services such as Botox, Juvederm, and sclerotherapy. The physicians are able to do consultations with clients and help them to choose the services that would be best for them. Esper notes, “Both of our physicians, Dr. Blair Tolar and Dr. Kathryn Glass, really care about their patients. They love to be here at the spa because it gives them the chance to help people feel their very best and work in a relaxed environment away from their everyday jobs.” Dr. Glass, a family practice physician, is very enthusiastic about the opportunity to use her knowledge and skills to serve the spa’s clients, stating, “I find it extremely satisfying to teach patients about injectable treatments as well as to counsel them on skin care products for home and other treatments available at the spa. I love the art of using Botox and fillers to reduce the effects of aging and to see the dramatic results our patients have.” Dr. Glass is also trained in sclerotherapy, which are injections that reduce spider veins in the legs. Like Dr. Glass, Dr. Tolar also enjoys providing physician services at the spa. Dr. Tolar himself has tried Botox treatments and has experienced its benefits, noting that, “I didn’t look tired. As a result, I didn’t feel tired.” Medical Spa 7 offers a wide variety of services that the public might not be aware of. Though their pedicures, manicures, facials, and massages are quite popular, the spa offers a number of high quality services, some using new technologies and equipment. For example, clients can take advantage of sunless tanning on a new machine that gives users a tan that can last around eight days and is even, not blotchy or smelly. Additionally, the experience is more comfortable because it is heated, so clients do not have to shiver while achieving an attractive, glowing complexion. The spa also offers IonCleanse, which is a detoxifying foot bath that neutralizes the acid wastes that attack joints, tissues, muscles, and glands. Many who have experienced this treatment report reduced swelling and joint pain, a reduction in liver spots or rashes, and increased energy. Another service that clients can enjoy is a body wrap. The spa has a number of wraps that can nourish and exfoliate the skin, and some fight cellulite. Amanda Esper notes that the spa often offers monthly specials on various wraps, and she encourages those interested to visit the spa’s website or check out the spa on facebook. Medical Spa 7 has a number of hair removal services such as waxing or Dermaplane, which is a great alternative to waxing and goes really well with a facial. We also offer laser therapies that can help with skin tightening, cellulite, hair removal, stretch marks, sun damage, rosacea, facial/leg veins, acne, and wrinkle reduction. One important aspect of the spa that Esper hopes to communicate is the spa’s commitment to providing top of the line services to the region at a price that is affordable in the region. Esper believes that

people need to take good care of themselves and find ways to relax and rejuvenate, but she also understands that in today’s difficult economic times that people feel guilty about visiting a spa and have trouble justifying the expense. However, she notes that if people do not feel at their best, then their quality of life is decreased. Each month people can check the spa’s website or facebook page for specials, and they can also sign up for the spa’s newsletter. They can also check daily for “flash sales” and take advantage of deeply discounted services. One particular service that the spa’s professionals are very excited about providing is the new HydraFacial. Medical Spa 7 is one of a very exclusive group of spas to be able to offer this technology to clients. The HydraFacial is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment that is new to aesthetic technology. It moisturizes the skin while removing dead skin cells and extracting impurities from skin. Simultaneously, it bathes the new skin with hydrating and moisturizing serums. ome people may not realize that it is the patient's choice where they decide to go when their doctor orders physical therapy. It is a good idea to ask the doctor if they recommend a particular outpatient facility. Most doctors will likely ask you where you live or if you've had therapy before. Others may prefer one outpatient physical therapy facility over another, depending on the diagnosis. For example, a doctor may have had good results for neck and low back pain at one facility while the results for joint replacements are better at another. It is not necessary for the doctor to specify the facility from which you will be receiving therapy on the prescription; he or she is only required to write an order for the evaluation and treatment of physical therapy. (Actually, in the state of Kentucky, patients have direct access to physical therapy so a prescription for therapy isn't necessarily required; however, some insurance companies require it.)

Once the patient has the prescription, they may take it to the facility of their choosing. The hours and location of an outpatient facility might play an important role in where a person decides to go for therapy, as well. Many try to accommodate those who work while receiving therapy. ostpartum depression is sometimes referred to as the “baby time blues!” During the nine months of pregnancy, a woman’s hormones are jumping all over the place. After the delivery of the “special little bundle” that she has been carrying for nine months, a woman’s body has another hormonal change that can sometimes cause or trigger symptoms of depression, which may occur about six weeks following childbirth. This hormonal change happens almost immediately after giving birth due to the raised hormone levels starting to decrease very rapidly, going back down to the normal level. Postpartum depression may be caused by this rapid descend. Factors that contribute to postpartum depression: • Tired, not enough sleep • Overwhelmed with caring for a new baby • Loss of personal identity • Loss of pre-pregnancy figure • Loss of your free time for self, spouse, and friends Symptoms of postpartum depression: • Restless • Too much or too little sleep • Lack of motivation • Irritable • Sad • Lack of concentration • Overwhelmed • Hopeless/ afraid of baby • Can’t make decisions on own • No energy • Eating too much or too little During the nine months of pregnancy, the mom-to-be can receive massages and/or reflexology after fourteen weeks (first trimester) into the pregnancy with the approval of her Obygn. Moms-to-be and new moms that receive regular massages and/or reflexology sessions are usually less depressed and less anxious than individuals who do not receive regular massages.

The unborn baby is completely protected by the amniotic fluid which surrounds the baby. The baby receives benefits from the mom-to-be who is receiving regular massages. If the baby is laying on mom’s ribcage or lungs, the trained massage therapist can show mom how to gently move the baby off of these areas. Again, this is perfectly safe for the baby, because he or she is protected by the amniotic fluid surrounding them. Mom will now be able to breathe easier. Tips to help eliminate symptoms of depressions: 1: Get as much rest as possible 2: Ask for help with cleaning the house 3: Talk to friends, family, and other moms about how you are feeling 4: Exercise by walking 5: Join a support group for moms that are experiencing depression If you are experiencing any symptoms of depression, do not suffer alone; please tell someone and get the help you need from your massage therapist who is trained in pre- and post-pregnancy massage, and/or your doctor. Please get the help you need as soon as possible because depression affects you, the baby, the entire family, and even your friends. Massage therapists not only touch bodies, but they touch lives. Massage does a body good. Not only is massage totally relaxing, unwinding, and rejuvenating, but it is very therapeutic. Individuals that receive regular massages and/or reflexology do not get sick as often as others and when they do, they don’t get it as bad or keep it as long. The articles combine educational information with answers to commonly asked questions.

W

orking with grieving people for more than twenty years has given us a wealth of practical experience. Amongst the many observations we have made is the fact that grieving people often seem to be slower to respond to even the simplest of questions, and to be baffled by tasks that are normally routine. Imagine that your brain has been filled up with three quarts of molasses. That is pretty much the effect that a major loss event can have on your capacity to think, feel, and participate in life. We offer this truth for the dual purpose of helping grievers and helping those around grievers. If you have experienced a major significant emotional loss of any kind, there is a high probability that your ability to concentrate on day-to-day activities may be severely limited. You may have an idea, walk to the next room to act on it, and when you get there, realize that you do not have the faintest idea what it was you had intended to do. If you remember nothing else, please remember that this is a normally occurring phenomenon. Recognize that your entire being—emotional, physical, and spiritual—is focused on the loss that just occurred. When possible, it is a good idea to avoid driving and working with any tools that require concentration and mental coordination. An incredibly high percentage of serious and fatal auto accidents befall grieving people. It is essential that you recognize this naturally occurring inability to concentrate. It is equally important that you not judge yourself harshly for being dazed, confused, and preoccupied. But most importantly, you must be gentle with yourself. There is absolutely nothing to be gained by hammering yourself for being normal and human. For those of you who are near and dear to friends who have recently experienced a painful loss of any kind, read all of the above—re-read all of the above. You must recognize that the inability to concentrate is the single-most common of all responses to loss. Do not berate. Do not scold. Do not have an opinion or judgment. Remember, your friend is on another planet—the planet grief. Their entire being is trying to make sense out of an incredibly painful experience. By definition, grief is the normal and natural emotional response to loss of any kind. Most of us have been falsely socialized to shift the emotional reaction into the intellect. But the head is not broken —the heart is broken. You must resist the temptation to make intellectual comments to your grieving friend. For example, while it is intellectually accurate that life goes on, many grievers have a hard time participating in life at all, so life goes on without them. If someone staggered towards you with an arrow sticking in their chest and blood dripping from the wound, you would probably recognize that the person might be in massive physical pain. It is unlikely that you would say, “Don’t feel bad; at least it wasn’t a poisoned arrow,” and just keep walking past them. More likely, you would say, “My gosh, you must be in terrible pain; let me call an ambulance.” Yet when someone’s heart has been broken by a major loss, most people say, “Don’t feel bad; you should feel grateful you had them so long.” While it may be intellectually accurate that you have a great Page 18 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Western Kentucky ­— December 2012

deal of gratitude in that relationship, that is usually not the foremost emotional response to the death of a loved one. Perhaps it would be helpful to imagine that there is an emotional arrow sticking out of their chest. It will remind you to respond more helpfully. Even though death can be separated into two categories, sudden death or long-term illness, ultimately all death is sudden. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that if someone has tended to a dying loved one for a long time, that they would automatically have less pain than someone who has lost someone to a sudden death. In fact, it is a good idea to make no assumptions at all. The finality of death, along with the end of any hopes of a miracle remission or cure, brings a tremendous amount of emotional pain. For many people drowning in a sea of painful emotions, numbness seems like a constant companion. It may take hours or even days to sort out the feelings and thoughts that have been unearthed by the death of a loved one. The death of a less than loved one may produce even more confusing emotions. We have been talking mainly about reactions to death. The emotional response to divorce, while different, is parallel. Divorce is the death of a relationship. Quite often, one divorcing partner feels as if there has been a sudden death and one feels like they have been caught in a long-term illness. In either situation, there is liable to be the same inability to concentrate that affects those responding to death. It is also quite probable that those reeling from the effects of a divorce will have some difficulty identifying the feelings they are experiencing. As we pointed out earlier, this reduced ability to concentrate is normal. Don’t fight it. Be gentle with yourself. Avail yourself of the Grief Recovery Handbook as soon as possible. It is never too soon to begin to recover. Friends, please be alert to the emotional arrows you can’t see. When a friend has a broken heart, be gentle with them also. I

t’s that time of year again. The holidays are quickly approaching and the next several weeks seem to offer only gray skies, cold weather, shorter days, and less sunlight than usual. It should be of no surprise during this time of year that folks start feeling a

change in their mood, which may include symptoms such as sadness, fatigue, altered sleep patterns, and an avoidance of social activities. Due to the changing seasons, a lack of sunlight, and a shortening of daylight hours can oftentimes trigger what is com-


monly referred to as the “winter blues.” Holiday stress, coupled with the shorter days of winter, can make people more vulnerable to depressive symptoms. In fact, the winter blues are viewed as a mild form of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is a clinical depression that occurs during the winter months. SAD is a pattern of recurring depression during the winter season. Dr. Christopher Adams, Medical Director of Lourdes Behavioral Health Center states that, “Seasonal Affective Disorder tends to occur when seasonal changes take place and reduced sunlight impact levels of serotonin and melatonin, which may interfere with natural sleep patterns thereby leading to symptoms of depression.” Oftentimes individuals feel depressed not only throughout the winter months, but also into the early spring. Typically when the winter weather changes and folks get back into their normal activities after the holidays, the “blues” feeling subsides and usually goes away. However, as John Strachan, Program Director, Lourdes Behavioral Health says, “with some individuals, the depressive symptoms may continue and need to be overcome using a clear plan of action in order to keep them from getting worse over time.” There are several steps you can take to manage your symptoms and they include the following:

•D ue to the decreased exposure to sunlight in the winter months, individuals may not receive enough vitamin D. It has been found that there is a link between vitamin deficiency and decreased mood. Therefore, supplementing with vitamin D during the winter months may give individuals a boost in their mood.

•E xpose yourself as much as possible to the sunlight during the winter months. The regular use of a light box can assist by emitting high intensities of light, which improvise the effects of the sun’s natural rays. Light boxes can be used daily and may assist with improving mood.

t seems like there is a new scam every day to get your Medicare ID number, bank account information, and other personal information. We are receiving telephone calls offering free medical equipment, free diabetes supplies, and other items if you provide your Medicare number. Some of these offers are legitimate but others are only efforts to get your information. One of the latest scams involves the caller saying Medicare is sending out new plastic cards, similar to a credit card, to replace the old card. The caller says they need to verify the person’s identity. They may even have the name of the person’s bank. The caller is said to be very believable. If you receive one of these calls, you should hang up the phone. Medicare will not call you and they already have your information.

The risks of giving your information to someone other than your doctor, pharmacy, or other provider can result in identity theft, Medicare being billed for equipment and/or services that you did not receive, and even possible denial of future claims. It is also a good idea to keep a journal of visits to your doctor, your prescriptions, and all medical tests/procedures that can be used as a comparison with your Medicare Summary Notice or insurance Explanation of Benefits forms. If you suspect that Medicare is being charged for a service or supply that you did not receive, or if you do not know the provider on the claim, you should call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) immediately.
