Who ACTUALLY Wears Skinny Jeans? You Do – You’ll See! Submitted by Ooh La La Spa
H
ave you watched months or even years go by, making excuses for the extra pounds or trying programs that haven’t worked? Do you jump, wiggle, and squirm to get into your pants? Now it’s time to get serious and live the healthy lifestyle (and jeans) you’ve imagined! Losing weight can be extremely overwhelming so seek a program that gives you everything you need to ensure safe, effective weight loss plus continued support to help you maintain your weight loss. Weight loss products boasting HcG are everywhere—on TV, online, and in grocery stores. It is important to consider the quality of product you are purchasing. By enrolling in a physician-supervised program, you can be more confident in the efficacy and safety of the product. Always ensure you are getting a pharmaceutical-grade HCG, which can only be prescribed by a medical physician, to aid in your weight management. Interestingly, patients may find that other health issues improve with the use of HcG, such as sleep, skin, and mood. Additionally, patients may experience a stabilization of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, fewer arthritis symptoms, an improvement in psoriasis symptoms, peptic ulcers, and hair loss. Sometimes we lose momentum and need guidance. Sound familiar? Supervised programs tend to incorporate weekly appointments and support to ensure a smooth transition into a healthier lifestyle. Those weekly appointments maintain results through patient accountability. Participants achieve a higher rate of completion and program satisfaction. A great compliment to HcG is a cleansing and nutrient infusion routine that burns fat and optimizes overall health to help you feel younger and more energetic. If the body is not in a healthy state, it cannot be expected to perform optimally. This situation can lead to things such as “yo-yo dieting.” The supplements used in this system are all composed of natural substances that aid in consistent weight loss over time, reduce cravings for unhealthy food, and help balance digestion. In fact, many programs can be custom tailored for your personal goals in terms of boosting energy, improving muscle tone, skin care, cleansing, mental clarity, and many other purposes. Stubborn fat is the coolest thing in town. Just squeeze it and we’ll freeze it with CoolSculpting. Whether you want to trim those areas that are resistant to diet and exercise, or you want to maximize your appearance in addition to your weight loss program, CoolSculpt is an ideal choice. Technology to sculpt, tone and firm is on the rise. Treatments, such as CoolSculpt Body Contouring, offer great results with little or no downtime, unlike liposuction surgeries which involve incisions and weeks of post treatment care. The CoolSculpt applicator actually freezes stubborn fat in the desired treatment area (for example: muffin tops, bra bulges and belly pooches). The intense cold from the onehour treatment kills those cells, and then your body naturally eliminates them over time. Best results are seen two to four months after the twotreatment process. Though patients may experience slight cramping, bruising, or tenderness, they can resume their regular lifestyle immediately following the procedure.
Remember that when it comes to weight loss, there is no healthy “quick fix” so steer clear of lofty promises and claims. However, by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine the success you achieve is yours forever. Now let’s get you into those skinny jeans! For more information or to schedule a consultation, contact Dr. Kristen Jacobs at Ooh La La Spa, Monday through Friday during business hours at 618-288-9117 or visit the website at www.OohLaLaWellness. com. Taking Care of You:
Avoiding Compassion Fatigue Submitted by Passages Hospice
C
aring for loved ones at the end of life is challenging, both professionally and emotionally. Stress levels have been documented to be higher than a woman newly widowed or someone who has just been diagnosed with breast cancer. Compassion fatigue is a form of burnout characterized by emotional, physical, and spiritual exhaustion. Caring for seriously ill family members over an extended amount of time can intensify it. We, as caregivers, are exposed to pain, suffering, or sadness—all while being compassionate and understanding The causes of compassion fatigue include: work over-load, emotional demands, feelings of helplessness, accumulated loss, and self-imposed pressure to live up to your own high standards. The Page 6 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
warning signs of compassion fatigue include: abusing alcohol or food, anger, blaming, chronic lateness, depression, high self-expectations, hopelessness, increased irritability, low self-esteem, and sleep disturbances. Sometimes a vacation or time of rejuvenation can help ease compassion fatigue. Here are a few tips: • The most important step in recovery from Compassion Fatigue is to get in touch with yourself. This doesn’t mean you have to “stop caring” or “toughen up.” It requires honest self-reflection. Talk out your feelings with a non-judgmental listener (a spouse, co-worker, friend, counselor). We all need to have a trusted, understanding resource to confide in.
•R ecognize that you may need to have your batteries re-charged. Get in the habit of doing something everyday to replenish your energy. Go for a walk, listen to a favorite CD, or watch a movie you enjoy. Take time for yourself! • Develop a self-care plan. Create your own personal mission statement, which includes your own values and comfort levels. Rediscover what gives your life joy and meaning. Begin to work within these principles and let them guide you. Use them as a future compass for your daily decisions. Compassion Fatigue can happen to anyone at any time in their life. It doesn’t mean you have failed or are a “bad caregiver” for your loved one. We all bring personal experiences with us that can impact our ability to cope effectively in the present. Just remind yourself that taking care of you is also an important part of your job! For more information on hospice care and more, please visit us online at www.passageshospice.com.

rapes have been enjoyed for their taste and beauty for thousands of years. And today’s scientific research keeps on showing that grapes are more than just a pretty fruit — they’re also very, very good for us. In fact, over a decade of research sugg ests that grapes help maintain a healthy heart and may also help defend against a variety of age-related and other illnesses. Studies are ongoing to uncover the links between grapes and heart health, eye health, brain health, joint health, cell health and preventing certain cancers. Of course, grapes aren’t just healthy, they also taste great: crisp, juicy and sweet. Kids love them. And, they’re convenient, making them truly a Super Snack. Eat them by the bunch, or toss them into recipes like these. Back to School and Back to Sports: How to Help Your Youngster Avoid Sports Injuries By Stephanie Dykstra, Imaging Center
A
fter months of fun in the sun, kids go back to school and back to sports often unprepared for the toll it will take on their bodies to get back in shape and back in the game. Being young certainly has its advantages, but youth and young adults are still prone to sports injuries, making back to school time also one of the highest times of the year for ER visits among young athletes. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the injury rate for teen athletes is roughly the same as among the pros. They warn that what might be a minor injury to an adult may be of greater concern in a growing athlete.
“Most parents like their children to be active but it is just as important that they are safe.” Many kids get out of shape during the summer, and then jump back into practice with weakened muscles, a recipe for muscle strains, sprained joints, and bone fractures. Not only can these injuries sideline an athlete for weeks, they can also have more permanent damage as the athlete grows into an adult. Most parents like their children to be active but it is just as important that they are safe. Whether on the hockey rink or the football field, there are ways to help prevent injuries. • Follow the rules: Encourage your children to know the rules and follow them. Most sports have rules in place to help keep kids safe. • Gear up: Make sure your child has the recommended play equipment and are wearing it properly.
• Make sure they stretch: One of the greatest ways to avoid sports injuries is to perform proper stretching techniques. Coaches can usually help your child develop a stretching regimen. • Take a time out: It’s important that your child take several breaks when playing on a hot field and if they get hurt, to hit the sidelines. Never let your child feel pressured to play through pain or excessive heat. Get Injuries Checked Out: If your child gets injured, see their doctor immediately. Whether you go to their pediatrician or the ER, know that you have a choice of where to get their x-ray, MRI, or ultrasound. Some imaging service providers stack up better than others in terms of staff and equipment. Also know that outpatient imaging centers are often less expensive than the hospital. • Tone it down: Some kids are just not cut out to be athletes, and that’s ok. If your child dislikes the sport, complains of frequent pain
or injuries, or has a negative attitude towards the coaches, maybe you should reevaluate their choice of activity. Bottom line, only you and your child know how to judge whether a sport is right for their body and if they are up for the required conditioning. Most youngsters compete with no problem and by following a few simple steps, they can have a safe and happy time, playing the sports they love, without injury. Stephanie Dykstra is a Managing Member of the Imaging Center of Alton and Imaging Center at Wolf Creek. Imaging Center offers affordable, quality imaging services such as MRI, x-ray and Ultrasound from its two metro east locations, located in Alton and Wolf Creek in Swansea. Local Dentist Awarded “Top Doctor” Worldwide Submitted by Dentistry With TLC
Dr. Anna Smith and her husband, Travis, in front of their full-service dental practice, Dentistry With TLC, in Godfrey. Dr. Smith performs all types of surgical, cosmetic, minimal sedation, family, general dentistry and braces. Travis works in the practice as the General Manager. Dr. Anna Smith Provides Every Type of Dentistry at Dentistry With TLC Of all Fastbraces dentists worldwide, Dr. Anna Smith was awarded “Top Doctor 2011–2012.” Dr. Smith was the first dentist to introduce Fastbraces to the St. Louis area and is the only dentist providing Fastbraces in the Metro East area. Dr. Smith was selected for this award from hundreds of Fastbraces dentists all around the world. Dr. Smith has been practicing dentistry for eight years and has been providing orthodontic treatment for seven years at Dentistry With TLC. Fastbraces The demand for Fastbraces has been so high at Dentistry With TLC that Dr. Smith has added three rooms to her practice to provide space for the growing number of Fastbraces patients. Dr. Smith explains, “I find that adults really do want to improve their own smiles and provide Page 12 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
braces for their children. However, in tough economic times everyone is looking for a faster and more cost effective way to get the job done. For most families, Fastbraces is the solution.” Dr. Smith has many patients who drive from surrounding areas to come to Dentistry With TLC for Fastbraces. Susan Carsell brings her two children from Glen Carbon to Dentistry With TLC in Godfrey. Susan explains, “I started bringing my kids to Dentistry With TLC when my husband heard Dr. Smith talk about Fastbraces on the radio. Fastbraces are reasonably priced and everyone here is really nice. Dentistry With TLC is very much worth the drive for my family because I appreciate that Dr. Smith takes the time to explain procedures and costs so clearly and patiently.” Lauren Harris from Ladue, Missouri decided to come to Dentistry With TLC when “Dr. Smith told me traditional braces would take two to
three years, but Fastbraces would straighten my teeth and correct my bite in just one year. I got my Fastbraces off in less than nine months! Fastbraces are fantastic!” Fastbraces have several unique characteristics that are causing them to gain popularity over traditional types of braces. Fastbraces were developed by an orthodontist in Texas and are very popular in that area of the country. Fastbraces have been tested and proven safe for children and adults for the past 20 years. Fastbraces are not new. The first unique characteristic of Fastbraces is that they are designed to straighten teeth and correct your bite in just three months to about a year. They have this unique ability due to their different design. Old technology braces are usually square in shape and typically move the top of the tooth in the first year and the root of the tooth the second year, thus requiring at least two years of braces treatment. Fastbraces are triangular in shape and gently allow the top and root of the tooth to move at the same time. Therefore, Fastbraces can safely do in one year what slower braces require two years to complete. A great way to think about this newer technology is to compare it to traveling. If someone were going to travel to California, they could drive and it would take several days to reach their destination. Another option would be to fly. If a person were to fly to California, it may only take about four hours. Fastbraces are like the airplane, allowing your teeth to straighten faster because of their amazing technology. Many people assume Fastbraces will be painful because they move teeth faster. This is not true! Flying in an airplane is not more painful than driving in a car, it’s just faster. In fact, university research has shown Fastbraces to be less sensitive than traditional braces. Fastbraces have no more risks than traditional braces. The second unique characteristic of Fastbraces is the cost. Fastbraces cost less than slower, traditional, and invisible braces. The average cost of traditional braces in this area of the country is about $5,000. Invisible braces tend to cost even more. Fastbraces start at just under $3,000! The shorter treatment time of Fastbraces means there are fewer visits to the dentist, which decreases your bottom line. Fastbraces may save you time and money in other ways too. It’s very common for patients to develop cavities when they have to wear braces for several years. Many patients don’t take the time necessary to thoroughly clean around their braces and between their teeth. This can lead to cavities. Fastbraces can cut the time in braces in half, making patients less likely to develop cavities. Fewer cavities mean fewer fillings in the future, less time at the dentist and more money left in your pocket! Finally, the very best unique characteristic about Fastbraces is their lifetime satisfaction guarantee. For example, if your dog eats your retainers and your teeth become crooked you can have Fastbraces again for free! You only pay for the cost of your new retainers and records. No other type of braces offers this type of guarantee. Full Service Dentistry One of the more interesting characteristics of Dr. Smith’s practice is that she does not limit her practice to orthodontics. Dr. Smith is licensed as a general dentists and she personally performs all types of family, surgical, cosmetic and minimal sedation dentistry from her office in Godfrey. Many patients are surprised to learn that they can have their teeth cleaned, cavities filled, root canals and crowns completed, implants placed, impacted wisdom teeth removed and teeth straightened in just one office by the same dentist! Dr. Smith has completed training beyond dental school to be able to provide her patients will all types of dentistry. Ashley Trimm from Bunker Hill explains, “I’m so glad I came to
Dr. Smith discusses Fastbraces with the grandmother of a Fastbraces patient. Dr. Smith and her team enjoy spending time getting to know their patients and thoroughly answering all their patient's questions about all types of dentistry.
Fastbraces patient Kayla Patton of Bunker Hill has her braces adjusted at her regular check-up. Kayla will only have to wear her Fastbraces for about a year. Her Fastbraces have already straightened her teeth and are now correcting her bite.

Dentistry With TLC for Fastbraces! I really feel comfortable with the people at Dentistry With TLC and I appreciate that they respect my time and work around my busy schedule. After I have my Fastbraces removed I will definitely continue to come to Dentistry With TLC for all my dental needs.” Sleep Apnea About four years ago, Dr. Smith became extremely involved in helping sleep apnea patients who cannot tolerate their CPAP machines. Her involvement was born from her personal experience with her husband, Travis. Dr. Smith said, “I would lay awake at night and listen to Travis snore and then stop breathing for almost a minute at a time. It was terrifying, exasperating, and exhausting for both of us. He had been diagnosed with sleep apnea but he could not tolerate the CPAP mask that would force air down his nose and throat during sleep. After searching for months for an alternative to unpredictable surgery, I learned that I could help.” Dr. Smith became trained to make oral appliances for people who cannot wear CPAP or who are looking for an alternative. The oral appliance looks like a retainer and fits inside the mouth. It is worn only while sleeping and gently positions the jaw to keep the airway open while the patient sleeps in any position they desire. The oral appliance is easy to care for, requires no replacement parts, and very little maintenance. It’s extremely easy to travel with and comes with a warranty. Travis Smith describes his oral appliance as his “most prized possession. I sleep through the night without snoring, I feel rested in the morning and I no longer fall asleep in the afternoon. This little device has given me the energy to function and enjoy my life again.” Dr. Smith says that treating sleep apnea patients is one of the most rewarding and surprising areas of dentistry, “I always look forward to seeing a patient come in to learn about oral appliances. After they have used their oral appliance for a few weeks, they are usually happy beyond words. Most of them are shocked that such a small device can make a huge difference in their life. They frequently say ‘this is the best money I have ever spent’ or ‘I can’t stop telling everyone I know’. It’s very rewarding to help people come out of the fog they have been living in.” Dr. Smith has become a leading provider of oral sleep appliances and her patients drive from all over the St. Louis area to Dentistry With TLC to learn about the technology. Due to the high volume of oral appliances that she has made, Dr. Smith is able to deeply discount the appliances below regular cost. “I don’t feel that I should charge more for something just because I’m one of only a few dentists providing this therapy. I would rather use my position to make the treatment more accessible to everyone by keeping the cost of oral appliances reasonable. I want more people to be able to treat their sleep apnea.” Environment and Staff The environment at Dentistry With TLC is unique. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., they provide payment plans for everyone, and even offer in-house financing options. Patients with an emergency can reach a doctor 24 hours a day. Dentistry With TLC accepts most insurance, but requires no insurance. It’s very common to be able to make an appointment just a few days after calling the office. The employees at Dentistry With TLC are also unique. Dr. Smith requires them to complete extensive training in order to accommodate patient requests properly. The dental assistants take written tests and are required to achieve a perfect score to demonstrate mastery of dental procedures. There are hundreds of testimonials on Dentistry With TLC’s website that have been collected from patients who are impressed with and appreciate Dr. Smith and her team’s kind and thorough care. Dr. Smith explains how an oral appliance works to treat sleep apnea. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and has been recognized as a “Silver Partner” for her dedication to helping patients treat their sleep apnea without using CPAP, a breathing mask frequently used while sleeping.

Interventional Pain Management Submitted by Pain Institute, LTD
F
inding relief from pain and a return to normal life can be a long and difficult process for those suffering from complex chronic pain. Achieving these results quickly, without long-term medication use and without surgery can be even more challenging. Patients experiencing complex chronic pain are sometimes bounced between primary care doctors, physical therapists, surgeons, and other specialists while looking for the answer to their pain problems. Many are placed on medications that provide temporary or incomplete relief while causing side effects. Many want to avoid the permanent effects of surgery. Some have already had surgery but still suffer. A multi-disciplinary Interventional Pain Management office can offer the comprehensive approach to pain management that these patients need. The primary goal of an Interventional Pain Management office is reducing, relieving, or managing chronic and acute pain in order to improve the patient’s quality of life. To do this, a multidisciplinary approach is used. This means that a skilled team of healthcare professionals from different backgrounds and specialties work together to provide a full range of treatments and services. Patients at a multidisciplinary office, therefore, do not have to go to one location for medication management, another for physical therapy and another for a carpal tunnel injection. All of these services occur in one office, leading to the benefit of in-depth coordination between the specialties. Under the direction of the medical doctor, these providers work together in a coordinated and planned manner. The doctors are well aware of what is going on during physical therapy and the physical therapists can tailor treatment around procedures that the doctors are performing. An improved quality of care is the goal of this close knit communication. An additional side-benefit of this arrangement is that scheduling and driving requirements are greatly decreased because patients receive all services in one place. Multi-disciplinary Interventional Pain Management offices can include pain management physicians, orthopedic and sports medicine physicians, physical therapists, psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, massage therapists, occupational therapists, alternative medicine practitioners, dieticians, and other healthcare professionals. These providers address causes of pain including: back and neck pain, ar-
thritis, knee pain, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel, diabetic neuropathy, headaches, sciatica, disc problems, fibromyalgia, myofascial disorders, and TMJ disorders. Treatments can include: physical therapy, injections (epidurals, facet injections, joint injections, trigger point injections), spinal cord stimulators, intrathecal pumps, radiofrequency ablations, medication management (oral and topical), massage therapy, and numerous other techniques. Typically a three phase plan is introduced on a patient’s first visit. Phase One is relieving the patient’s pain using non-surgical methods— this happens through interventional procedures, medication management, and therapy. They then move to Phase Two, during which the underlying problems are corrected. Without addressing what caused the pain, a relapse is likely and patients may continue to suffer. Phase Three consists of making sure that the patient understands how to keep the pain from returning. This phase includes understanding how to make healthy choices, knowing which exercises to perform to stay strong, introducing coping strategies and proper nutrition. For more information or to set up a consult with your local interventional pain management office, please contact The Pain Institute at 618-622-0303 or visit the clinic website at www.paininstituteonline.com. complete care
Common Foot Ailments Submitted by Next Step Foot and Ankle Centers
I
n today’s fast paced world, the average person can take 9000 steps in a typical day. Many people suffer from foot and ankle pain that can slow them down. Some examples could be minor problems such as fungal toenails or a major problem with a fractured (broken) ankle. Podiatrists, who are physicians trained to provide complete care foot and ankle care to people of all ages. When choosing a podiatry group, check to make sure the podiatrists are all board-certified or qualified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. One of the most common complaints seen by podiatrists is heel pain. Heel pain may be caused by several reasons ranging from trauma to simple over activity. One such cause is Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar Fasciitis is an irritation or inflammation of the ligament situated along the bottom of the foot and attaching to the heel. This constant “pull” or “inflammation” can then result in a heel spur. Symptoms are usually present upon walking first thing in the morning or after resting. There are several treatment options that can alleviate the symptoms and pain. Treatments may range from simple conservative methods to surgical intervention for the more prolonged severe cases. There is also a new procedure that may be available for plantar fasciitis, the Tenex FAST Procedure. Another problem many patients present with are bunions. Bunions are a common deformity that may result in pain along the inside of the foot beside the base of the great toe. Other symptoms include a red, swollen bump on the inside of the foot. This painful condition is caused Page 16 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
by the misalignment or enlargement of the bone at the base of the big toe. This causes the bump that most people refer to as the bunion. Many bunions begin by inappropriately fitted footwear, excessive physical activity, or simply may be hereditary. A complication of bunions is joint arthritis if left untreated for long periods of time. Treatment may include a conservative approach that may relieve the painful symptoms; however, many cases require surgical treatment. This involves a shifting in the long bone behind the great toe to position it to a more “natural” alignment. Some people may describe the same pain and presentation on the outside of the foot, along the base of the fifth toe. This is called a “bunionette” and requires the same treatment plan as a bunion. When searching for a podiatrist, look for one who will actually perform the care and treatment on their patients, rather than passing the care over to their office personnel or medical assistants. For personalized care for patients of all ages from infants to geriatrics, contact Next Step Foot and Ankle Center. Dr. Lindsay Barth, Dr. Jacob Lamb, Dr. Brian Martin, and Dr. Krista Nelson are all boardcertified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. They offer four convenient locations in the Metro East area with two offices in the St. Louis area. For office locations and an appointment, call 866-811-3100 or visit www.nextstepfootdocs.com.

prescription drugs
Illinois Cares RX Program Eliminated:
What Should You Do Now? Submitted by The Senior Services Plus Information and Assistance Department
D
ue to Illinois state budget reductions, funding for the Illinois Cares RX program will be eliminated as of June 30, 2012. This means that as of July 1, 2012, Illinois Cares RX will no longer help you pay for your prescription drugs and Medicare Part D plan premium. There are a few things you will want to keep in mind: • If you are enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan, you will continue to receive prescription drug coverage through that plan. You will not be dropped from your Part D plan; however, if your Part D plan has a monthly premium you will need to begin paying that. (Please note that if you do not pay your monthly Part D plan premium they will drop you from the plan). You will also need to pay any remaining deductible for your drug plan if there is one. In addition, the copay amount you pay for each prescription may change. Please call your Part D plan for information regarding your monthly premium, deductible, co-pay costs and how you will pay your premium. We recommend that you get a three-month fill of your prescriptions right now, if you can, before Illinois Cares RX ends. • If you would like to switch Part D plans upon losing Illinois Cares RX you will need to make that change between June 1 and August 31, 2012.
Page 18 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
• If you have Medicare and Medicaid, you will continue to receive prescription drug coverage through that plan, and Medicaid will continue to provide assistance for your Medicare Part D excluded drugs. Your co-payments will also remain the same because you are automatically qualified for LIS (Low Income Subsidy) from the federal government. • I f you do not have Medicare, you will no longer receive prescription drug coverage through Illinois Cares RX beginning July 1, 2012 and you will be responsible for paying for all costs associated with your prescription drugs. • I f you have HIV or AIDS, you may be eligible for coverage under a program offered by the Illinois Department of Public Health. To find out if you can receive help for your prescriptions and health insurance premiums please call 1-800-825-3518 or find the application at www.idph.state.il.us. The Senior Services Plus Information and Assistance Department is gathering information on other programs that can help with prescription costs. patient satisfaction
Vectra XT 3D Imaging Submitted by Ryan Diederich, MD, MidAmerica Plastic Surgery
I
f you are one of the thousands of people each year considering aesthetic plastic surgery, there is now an exciting and unique opportunity for patients. With modern advances in 3D imaging combined with revolutionary new software, patients now have the ability to preview the results of potential procedures, such as breast augmentation, facial procedures, and more, well before any surgery is performed.
How VECTRA 3D Aesthetic Simulation Works Both the VECTRA© 3D camera and Sculptor software were developed by Canfield Imaging Systems of Fairfield, NJ, the world’s leading provider of medical photography systems. The process starts with a VECTRA 3D session which produces a three-dimensional photograph of the patient. Then using the Sculptor software, the surgeon is able to manipulate the image to create a prediction of the expected results from aesthetic procedures, including breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, liposuction, rhinoplasty, facial procedures, in addition to many more. Moreover, the Sculptor software allows the patient to view their original and simulated photographs side-by-side or translucently for more precise and convenient comparisons.
Improved Patient Satisfaction Plastic Surgery can seem frightening and risky to patients, especially those who are unfamiliar with aesthetic procedures. However, VECTRA 3D imaging allows the doctor to provide assurance and confidence for patients that were otherwise fearful of possible undesirable outcomes. Cosmetic Surgery does not have to be equivalent to chance. The doctor and the patient can now focus on a clearly defined objective that will produce desired results by making changes to the 3D representation of the patient’s face and body. The innovative technology results in high patient satisfaction as it reduces the risk of miscommunication between the surgeon and patients. Because the entire process is performed prior to any incision both the clinical staff and the patient are able to progress with confidence, knowing everyone is moving in cooperation toward the same, precise goal. For more information about Vectra 3D Imaging or to schedule an appointment, please contact MidAmerica Plastic Surgery at 618-288-7855 or visit online at MidAmericaPlasticSurgery.com.

medicare coverage
What is the Medicare Advantage Plan Submitted by Illinois Oncology, LTD.
I
ndividuals with Medicare have several options to consider regarding their own out-of-pocket expenses. If you choose to have Medicare only, with no supplemental (or secondary) insurance, you will owe 20% of the Medicare allowable on many of your charges. For example, if Medicare approves $100.00 of an office visit—you will owe $20 and Medicare will pay $80.00. You may elect to have Medicare and a supplement or Medigap policy. These policies will cover the 20% Medicare does not pay. However, with these policies you may still owe the Medicare deductible. You may, however, elect to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan. These plans combine Medicare Parts A & B into one plan and may or may not offer a prescription (Part D) plan. With Medicare Advantage, it is important to know what your out-of-pocket is and what will be covered. For instance, a Medicare Advantage plan with a $4500.00 outof-pocket means that some services (such as chemotherapy drugs) will be paid at 80% and the patient will owe 20% until the $4500.00 out-of-
pocket is met. This is calculated for a calendar year, i.e. this repeats every January 1. Therefore, it is advisable to compare your Medicare Advantage plan and their out-of-pocket to the cost of Medicare and a supplement. Individuals can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another during open enrollment (October 15 – December 7). Again, it is important to review each plan’s specific benefits package with special attention to the out-of-pocket or prescription coverage. In addition, you can switch from your Medicare Advantage plan to original Medicare from January 1 – February 14, 2013. You then would need to enroll in a Medigap or secondary policy and choose a Part D plan for prescription coverage. For more information, visit www.illinoisoncology.com. T
he Emergency Medical Services for Children Region IV Coalition recently presented two $250 scholarships to college students seeking healthcare-related degrees. The applicants chosen were Molly Etling of Freeburg, Illinois and Amy McEvoy of Edwardsville Illinois. Etling is attending the University of Illinois majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology concentrating on premedicine. Etling, whose ambition is to become a pediatrician, is a sophomore at U of I with high honors.
“Region IV EMSC Coalition supports the efforts of Illinois EMSC to improve the care of pediatric patients through the education of physician, nurse, and EMS personnel.” McEvoy is attending Southeast Missouri State University working towards a bachelor’s degree of nursing. Her ambition includes a doctorate degree in nursing and becoming a nurse practitioner. McEvoy, who will be a freshman at SEMO this fall, was an honors student at Edwardsville High School and was part of the Medical Occupations program for three years. Scholarship applicants had to complete an application and compose a short essay describing their healthcare journey. Additional items required included letters of recommendation, proof of enrollment/admission to a college or university or other medical education and proof of residency in Region IV. The goal of Illinois EMSC is to ensure that appropriate emergency medical care is available for ill and injured children at every point along the continuum of care—including primary prevention, acute care, and rehabilitative care. senior living
An Active Lifestyle for Senior Citizens is an Essential Part of Healthy Aging Submitted by Provision Living in Godfrey
R
esearch shows that physical activity promotes a healthier and happier lifestyle for all, but especially for those in their “Golden Years.” However, an alarming number of Senior Citizens tend to become increasingly less active as they age, choosing to spend the majority of the day inside reading or simply watching TV. Not only do they become isolated from others, they lack physical exercise which can lead to increased health complications.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover, or so the saying goes, and for seniors demonstrating their gardening skills at the assisted living community in Godfrey, Illinois, this couldn’t be more true.” At Provision Living at Godfrey, they firmly believe that an active lifestyle for their residents promotes improved physical, emotional, and social well-being. Activities give the residents a reason to get out and share experiences with each other—and this summer gardening has been at the top of the list! Don’t judge a book by its cover, or so the saying goes, and for seniors demonstrating their gardening skills at the assisted living community in Godfrey, Illinois, this couldn’t be more true. “I’d like to call it reminiscing, but it’s really amazing how so many of our residents just automatically pick up gardening tools and begin doing stuff that some of the staff don’t even know how to do, and several of us have green thumbs!” said Mandy Webb, the Activities Director at Provision Living’s Godfrey location. Some pastimes do seem like “riding a bike” in that one remembers how to do it after just a few moments of getting started. Gardening is a nourishing mental and physical activity, which stimulates memories, and offers light exercise and fresh air in the process. Also key to the activity is the group effort involved, points out Webb. When a person is used to something like gardening, es-
pecially this time of year, it doesn’t take much to link the person up with a favored routine and all the fantastic memories that come with it. Godfrey also has a terrific team focused on activities in the community’s memory care wing, with Activities Assistant, Regina Cook, heading up that group’s effort to bring lively and engaging ideas to the monthly calendar. Cook faces a different sort of challenge, with the added goal of simply achieving a momentary change of pace being so important for residents with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Admittedly the potential for frustrating situations is a bit higher with the ever present need for care, and events such as gardening lessen the intensity of the caring environment to a degree, as residents take on an activity that often quickly comes back as a normal, healthy exercise. Moreover, with ever-present reminders that exercise is crucial for fighting memory loss, it’s helpful to have the spring season as a landscape for outdoor activities. The pleasant weather of 2012, thus far, has been a blessing and has inspired an early interest in these pastimes. Indoor activities such as a weekly happy hour, which runs from around 3:00 to 4:00 or 4:30 and features live entertainment several times per month, is a popular activity at Godfrey. In addition, popular activities include card games, wii bowling, crafts, Bible Study, and of course, Bingo! The community is also beginning to offer chair massages, a relaxing perk after getting one’s hands dirty planting flowers or sweating to the oldies in exercise class. For more information on memory care and healthy aging, contact Provision Living in Godfrey, Illinois at 618-466-8010.

orthopedic recovery
Knee Replacement Surgery Submitted by VNA-TIP HealthCare
K
nee replacement surgery is the most common joint replacement procedure. Patients suffering from chronic knee pain and decreased mobility, most likely from arthritis or injury, can be candidates for knee replacement. A physician may recommend surgery when the painful symptoms can no longer be treated with non-operative measures like joint supplements, weight loss, anti-inflammatory medications, or injections. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, more than 600,000 knee replacements are performed yearly in the United States. While the surgery is common, the knee is the largest joint in the body and replacing it is still a major surgery in which the diseased or damaged parts of the knee joint are replaced with artificial substitutes, usually a metal and plastic implant. Patients often have many concerns regarding knee replacement surgery. Knowing what to expect and then preparing before surgery can alleviate some of that stress.
Before Knee Replacement Surgery
• Some physicians may recommend lifestyle changes to better prepare the body for surgery. These could include smoking cessation, proper diet, starting an iron supplement, or weight loss. Specific exercises to strengthen the surrounding area of the knee may also be recommended, some of which may be suggested at least six weeks prior to surgery. • Home Safety evaluations can help prepare the home for recovery. By making simple changes in daily routines, patients can function easier and potentially avoid injury. Some modifications could include attempting to live on the main level to avoid repeated stair climbing, creating clear paths for walker or other assisted walking device, scheduling someone to care for or walk pets, moving kitchen items and food to waist or chest level, and creating a place with everyday items within reach for recovery. • Hospital stay may last from three to seven days, depending on the patient’s healing process. For several, help will be needed in the home and if there is not sufficient help at home, the patient may be transferred to a rehabilitation center. Upon leaving the hospital, a discharge planner will help to set up a home health agency to aid in recovery at home. Page 24 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
Agencies can be researched prior to surgery. A good resource to help determine which local home care agency would provide the best care for the patient’s needs is www.medicare.gov. If the patient is not able to go home due to lack of assistance, the discharge planner or physician can recommend a list of facilities for in-patient recovery. To prepare, obtain a list of approved rehab facilities from the patient’s insurance company prior to surgery. Be sure to find out their requirements for pre-certification and how many days insurance will cover.
After Knee Replacement Surgery
• Recovery from knee replacement surgery differs for each patient and circumstance. In most cases, the rest and rehabilitation period ranges from three to six months after surgery. Healthcare providers usually break down the total rehabilitation time into two parts that they refer to as short-term and long-term recovery. Short-term recovery is when a patient can walk with little or no aid and uses over the counter pain relievers instead of prescription pain killers. Short-term recovery averages usually 6-12 weeks after surgery. Long-term recovery involves the complete healing of the wound and soft tissues and when the patient returns to normal daily life, including work. On average, long-term recovery for most patients is between three and six months. • P atients can be overwhelmed by the amount of time and energy it takes to perform everyday living activities, but there are people who can help. Physical therapists will help
patients increase agility by performing strength exercises. Therapists, sometimes Occupational, will teach patients proper techniques for performing these activities to decrease the chance of injury during recovery. Home modifications can help aid in preventing injury as previously mentioned. Patients may also choose a home health agency to aid in recovery at home since mobility and travel may be difficult. Home health staff can help patients follow the surgeon/s exercise recommendations and also address safety issues in the home, including assessing the need for adaptive equipment and the patient’s ability to care for their self following surgery. They can manage wound and incision care to facilitate healing and prevent complications while improving patient comfort at home during the healing process. The staff can help manage pain medications and monitor their effects, as well as help patients to recognize signs and symptoms that should prompt them to seek emergency care. VNA-TIP HealthCare Can Help. At VNA-TIP HealthCare, patient independence and quality of life are top priorities. Our interdisciplinary team at VNA-TIP HomeCare can help patients follow their doctor’s recommendations and recover from joint replacement surgery at home. While utilizing the latest in technology, methods of care and therapies, VNA-TIP is also able to provide a continuum of services including Home Care, Hospice and Private Duty. skin care
KNOW YOUR SKIN Submitted by Musick Dermatology, LLC
K
nowing your body can prevent health issues and minimize problems that may already exist. Early detection of issues often increases cure rates with easier, less invasive treatments. It is equally important to get to know your skin and be aware of any new or changing issues on the skin. The skin is the largest organ of the body but it is often neglected. It does not get the attention the heart and other organs receive. Following are some ways to get to know and understand our skin.
“Early detection of issues often increases cure rates with easier, less invasive treatments. It is equally important to get to know your skin and be aware of any new or changing issues on the skin.” What are moles? Moles are spots or patches of pigmented skin that range in color from tan, brown and black, to red, pink, blue or purple. They can be flat or raised. Moles are very common and almost everyone has at least one. The average number ranges from 10 to 40 on an individual. A person can be born with moles (congenital) or moles can appear after birth (acquired). People who have more than 50 acquired moles have a greater risk for the moles to change and become cancerous. Moles that are larger than average (>6mm) or irregular in shape and color are called atypical moles. Those with atypical moles have a greater chance of developing skin cancer. Regular self skin exams are recommended and should include all areas of the body including scalp, feet, between the toes and under finger and toenails. Dermatologist exams are advisable if an individual has numerous moles, has a personal or family history of skin cancer (especially melanoma), blistering sunburns, high sun exposure, tanning bed use, or if a mole develops suddenly, changes in shape or size or begins to itch, bleed or become painful.
Page 26 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
So how do you know if your mole is cause for attention? Detection and prevention are vital. The American Academy of Dermatology encourages people to look for and to seek professional help if the ABCDE’s of a pigmented lesion are noted. How can skin be protected and skin cancer prevented? Although damage to the skin is cumulative, prevention of further damage today is crucial. Skin cancer prevention is possible by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen (UVA and UVB) with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30. Apply one ounce (two tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Re-apply approximately every two hours or more frequently if sweating or swimming and apply even if the sun is not out. Use UV-blocking sunglasses; wear a broad-brim hat, long sleeves, and pants. Try to avoid the sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Water, sand and snow have reflective qualities and can increase your potential for sunburn and sun damage. Protect children’s sensitive skin. Tanning beds and the sun can not only cause skin cancer but age the skin, so self-tanning products are a great alternative. Why do some people burn and others tan and what are their risks? Melanin, the dark pigment in the skin, can be a natural protectant from the harmful Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays of the sun that are associated with sunburn. People with a naturally darker complexion or skin tone may take longer to display damage. Thus fairer complexions are at greater risk. DNA changes from UVB radiation causes the suntan reaction and can also lead to the formation of skin cancers including melanomas. Skin types I, II and III are at greater risk than IV, V and VI. Rate your own risk: I – Pale white skin – always burns, never tans II – White skin – burns easily, tans little III – Average white skin – burns moderately, tans to light brown IV – Beige or light tan skin – burns little, always tans to medium brown V – Moderate brown or tanned skin – rarely burns, tans to dark brown VI – Dark brown or black skin – deep pigmented, never burns What about the Vitamin D from the sun? Vitamin D can be manufactured by the body from exposure to the sun, but only a small amount of sunlight is needed. The number of skin cancers has been increasing in the years since a suntan has been associated with health and good looks and popularizing “laying out”, beach vacations, tanning beds and suntan accelerators. Why not get the Vitamin D from diet or a supplement that does not increase the risk of skin cancer?! Additionally, tanning causes the skin to age at faster rate. Who wants more wrinkles, spots, splotches and a leathery appearance? Are tanning beds and sunlamps safer than natural sunlight? NO. Sunlamps and tanning beds expose the body to Ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation. UVA is associated with more damaging quali-
ties, due to its deeper, more penetrating radiation. An increase in melanoma cases for those in their teens and twenties correlates to tanning bed use. Our advice, STAY OUT OF THE TANNING BED! What is skin cancer? Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and the most curable, when diagnosed and treated in early stages. All ethnicities can develop skin cancer but those who have light skin that burns easily have the greatest risk. People who have a family history of skin cancer, history of high sun exposure, live at high altitudes or near the equator, use tanning beds, have a lowered immune system, exposure to X-rays and carcinogenic agents are all at greater risk of skin cancer. Diagnosis is by visual examination and is confirmed by skin biopsy. Actinic keratosis (AK’s) are dry, pink, scaly spots that are considered pre-cancerous. Sun exposure and tanning beds increase the risk of developing AK’s. Treatment can include cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) light therapy. Skin cancer develops when abnormal cells form and multiply in the various layers of the skin. • B asal Cell Carcinoma: The most common type of skin cancer that forms in base of the outer layer (epidermis) of the skin. It grows slowly and rarely spreads to other parts of the body but can enter nearby nerves and bones. It should be treated without delay. Treatment can include surgical excision, curettage & desiccation, micrographic surgery, prescription creams or radiation therapy. • S quamous Cell Carcinoma: The second most common type of skin cancer that forms in the middle of the outer layer (epidermis) of the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma can grow deep and spread to other areas of the body. Treatment can include surgical excision, curettage & desiccation, micrographic surgery, prescription creams or radiation therapy. • Melanoma: Represents about only 5% of all skin cancers, but is the most dangerous because of its tendency to spread to internal organs. It is the most common cause of cancer death in young adults. Melanoma forms in the melanocytes (the cells that make pigment) which is why it often appears as a new dark spot on the skin or in a mole. Treatment should be swift and requires surgical removal. A = Asymmetry – If you draw a line down the middle of a mole, they should be mirror images, when one half of the mole/spot is not like the other half, it is asymmetrical.
B = Border – The edge is irregular, jagged, not smooth and does not have definition.
C = Color – A mole has multiple colors or changes in color. A variety of color can be an indication for concern (variation of shades of tan, brown, black, white, red or blue). An exception is that solid black can indicate need for dermatological examination.
D = Diameter – The average mole is less than 6mm (1/4 inch, the size of a pencil eraser). Melanomas are usually larger than 6mm but they can be smaller, especially if detected early.
E = Evolving – Changing in size, shape, color or elevation or that start to itch, bleed or become painful should be seen by a dermatologist. A mole that is “lazy” or content to simply be there and do nothing is likely normal. Other warning signs may be firmness or growth, especially rapidly, such as a few weeks or months. Spread of pigment from the spot to surrounding skin, redness or swelling beyond the border or something that does not heal are also cause for concern.

Glaucoma: Silent Thief of Sight By Patricia K. Novelly, Director of Practice Relations
G
laucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the U.S. and is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight.” There are many types of glaucoma and many theories about the causes of glaucoma. Although the disease is usually associated with an increase in the fluid pressure inside the eye, other theories include lack of adequate blood supply to the nerve. Doctors at the Illinois Eye Surgeons are national leaders in diagnosing and treating all types of glaucoma, including involvement in FDA clinical trials for new glaucoma medicine and surgical devices. “There are several different types of glaucoma, and it’s important to know exactly what type you have so you can get the correct treatment,” says Eric Wigton, MD, Director of Illinois Eye Surgeons Glaucoma Services. • Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form in the U.S. “This type develops slowly and usually without symptoms until noticeable vision loss occurs and it’s in an advanced stage, so early detection is key,” states Dr. Wigton. This type of glaucoma initially affects peripheral or side vision, but can advance to central vision loss. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to significant loss of vision in both eyes, and may even lead to blindness. • A cute angle closure glaucoma, a less common type, usually occurs abruptly due to a rapid increase of pressure in the eye. Symptoms may include severe eye pain, nausea, redness in the eye, seeing colored rings around lights, and blurred vision. “This Page 28 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
condition is an ocular emergency, and medical attention should be sought immediately, as severe vision loss can occur quickly. Laser treatment can be given right away to relieve pressure,” notes Dr. Wigton. Illinois Eye Surgeons have lasers available 24 hours at multiple locations around the state to deal with these emergencies. • S econdary glaucoma occurs as a result of an injury or other eye disease. It may be caused by a variety of medical conditions, medications, physical injuries, and eye abnormalities. Infrequently, eye surgery can be associated with secondary glaucoma. • N ormal-tension glaucoma is when eye pressure remains within what is considered to be the “normal” range, but the optic nerve is damaged nevertheless. Why this happens is unknown. It is possible that people with low-tension glaucoma may have an abnormally sensitive optic nerve or a reduced blood supply to the optic nerve caused by a condition such as atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries. Under these circumstances even normal pressure on the optic nerve may be enough to cause damage. Dr. Wigton says, “This type of glaucoma can be very difficult to detect until it’s too late. Early detection of optic nerve damage can be done with special imaging equipment, known as OCT.” OCT imaging is available at all IES locations.
Risk Factors • Age: People over age 60 are at increased risk for the disease. For African Americans, however, the increase in risk begins after age 40. The risk of developing glaucoma increases slightly with each year of age. • Race: African Americans are significantly more likely to get glaucoma than are Caucasians, and they are much more likely to suffer permanent vision loss as a result. People of Asian descent are at higher risk of angle-closure glaucoma and those of Japanese descent are more prone to low-tension glaucoma. • Family history of glaucoma: Having a family history of glaucoma increases the risk of developing glaucoma. • Medical conditions: Some studies indicate that diabetes may increase the risk of developing glaucoma, as do high blood pressure and heart disease. • P hysical injuries to the eye: Severe trauma, such as being hit in the eye, can result in immediate increased eye pressure and future increases in pressure due to internal damage. Injury can also dislocate the lens, closing the drainage angle, and increasing pressure. • Other eye-related risk factors: Eye anatomy, namely corneal thickness and optic nerve appearance indicate risk for development of glaucoma. Conditions such as retinal detachment, eye tumors, and eye inflammations may also induce glaucoma. Some studies suggest that high amounts of nearsightedness may also be a risk factor for the development of glaucoma. •C orticosteroid use: Using corticosteroids for prolonged periods of time appear to put some people at risk of getting secondary glaucoma. Diagnosing Glaucoma Glaucoma is diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination, although specialized testing is needed to confirm suspect cases. Specialized testing includes computerized peripheral vision measurement, ultrasonic or laser measurements of corneal thickness, and laser measurement of optic nerve damage (the aforementioned OCT). “If you’ve been previously diagnosed with glaucoma, make sure all of the above tests have been done to confirm that diagnosis,” states Dr. Wigton. “The reverse is also true: if you’ve been told you don’t have glaucoma but you have a strong family history, make sure all of the proper testing has been done to rule it out.” Treatment of Glaucoma The treatment of glaucoma is aimed at reducing intraocular pressure. The most common first line treatment of glaucoma is usually prescription eye drops that must be taken regularly. “There is a promising future for prescription drops to further lower pressure in glaucoma patients,” states Michael Jones, MD, Director of Clinical Research at Illinois Eye Surgeons. “The latest FDA trial we participated in involved a new combination medicine that showed drastic reductions in eye pressure in long term glaucoma patients.” That new drug could be on the market as soon as this fall adds Dr. Jones. If prescriptions drops don’t work to lower pressure the next line therapy is a new laser called SLT that increases drainage away from the eye. “The new SLT laser has greatly changed how we treat glaucoma patients,” notes Wigton. “With a 90 second in-office laser treatment we are able to reduce pressures in even the most resistant cases of glaucoma.” For the most difficult cases of glaucoma where drops or laser do not lower the pressure enough, surgery is required. The newest surgery
involves implanting a titanium pressure release valve into the eye to keep the pressure low. Dr. Michael Jones of Illinois Eye Surgeons was the first to implant that valve in Downstate Illinois in 2008. Lifelong Treatment There is no cure for glaucoma. Patients with glaucoma need to continue treatment for the rest of their lives. Because the disease can progress or change silently, compliance with eye medications and eye examinations are essential, as treatment may need to be adjusted periodically. By keeping eye pressure under control, continued damage to the optic nerve and continued loss of your visual field may slow or stop. Your eye care provider may focus on lowering the intraocular pressure to a level that is least likely to cause further optic nerve damage. This level is often referred to as the target pressure and will probably be a range rather than a single number. Target pressure differs for each person, depending on the extent of the damage and other factors. Target pressure may change over the course of a lifetime. Newer medications are always being developed to help in the fight against glaucoma. Early detection, prompt treatment, and regular monitoring can help to control glaucoma and therefore reduce the chances of progression vision loss. he Rehabilitation Center (TRC) at Anderson Hospital received the 2012 Professional Research Consultant (PRC) Five-Star Award for Excellence. The Five-Star Award is given annually to healthcare facilities that score in the top 10 percent nationally (at or above the 90th percentile) or higher for “Excellent” responses for overall Quality of Care when compared to other providers in that category. “The Rehab Team’s priority focus is training and caring for our patients to help them attain the best possible outcome,” said Kathy Stephens, TRC Program Director. “Achieving this award is a wonderful validation of the hard work and dedication that the rehab and nursing staff demonstrate every day.” Results are gathered from telephone surveys conducted by Professional Research Consultants, Inc., a nationally known healthcare Page 32 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area — August 2012
marketing research company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The survey assesses patient perceptions of the care they received. During the confidential questionnaire, patients are asked to rate their satisfaction with areas such as the admission/registration process, facilities, food, communication with nurses and physicians, discharge process, personal care issues, and overall assessment of the quality of care received. Patients then choose a rating of “excellent, very good, good, fair, or poor.” For more information, please contact Anderson Hospital at 618-288-5711. We are located at 6800 State Route 162, Maryville, Illinois.

An Association Between Oral Health and Heart Health? Submitted by Troy Family Dental
T
he American Association for Dental Research (AADR) acknowledged the very comprehensive review of the literature undertaken by the American Heart Association (AHA) on the relationship between periodontal or gum disease and heart disease, The review titled “Periodontal Disease and Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease: Does the Evidence Support an Independent Association?: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association” was published online in Circulation. The review assessed: 1) whether available data supported an association between heart disease and periodontal disease; and 2) whether available data supported that periodontal treatment might change heart risks or outcomes. The extensive review of current literature—including more than 40 observational studies—did indeed support an association between
periodontal disease and heart disease. “The validation of an association between periodontal disease and heart disease from the American Heart Association is an important statement from a public policy perspective,” said AADR President Rena D’Souza. While the association has been demonstrated, the literature review failed to support either a cause-effect relationship, or that periodontal treatment might prevent heart disease or change its outcome. AADR has many members who are researching the association between oral health and cardiovascular health, but long-term studies on the association between periodontal infection and cardiovascular disease or long-term periodontal treatment studies on cardiovascular health are certainly understudied. Hence, it was not surprising that the authors failed to find evidence in the literature demonstrating either a cause or a treatment effect. Importantly, the AHA review highlighted significant gaps in our scientific understanding of the interaction of oral health and heart disease and stated that well-designed, controlled studies would be required. “Further research on the association of oral health and cardiovascular disease is critical,” stated D’Souza. She states that with the continued evaluation of all the research tools that are available, advancement will be possible toward the understanding of this important relationship between oral health and heart health.
