egular exercise is important to the physical and mental health of everyone, and becomes increasingly essential as we age.

Physical fitness not only produces long-term health benefits but also boosts energy levels, improves mood, and increases confidence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends adults 65 and older get at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderateintense aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) and muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days per week1. While that may seem like a lot, it only amounts to 20 to 30 minutes each day and even can be broken down into three 10-minute sessions.

“It can be surprisingly easy to sneak a little bit of extra activity into our lives each day, whether we’re walking the dog, doing yard work, cleaning the house, or even parking in a spot that’s a little further from the store,” he said.

Now, you can take those positive habits and push yourself to do more. Go dancing, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator, take a swim, or walk a few laps around the mall. You’ll be surprised what a great distraction an activity can be and how it will boost your self confidence, too!

Worried about memory loss? Exercise also helps to keep your brain active, which can prevent loss of memory and cognitive decline while also slowing the progression of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease2. With 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s and nearly half of people aged 85 and older battling the disease, it’s important for everyone—regardless of their age—to be proactive and participate in physical activity3. Dr. Kiffer said exercise produces “neurotropic

peptides,” which act as joy juice for the brain, boosting new connections and even new brain cells.

Above all, be safe and keep well hydrated. Be sure to have fun and stay motivated when choosing an activity. If you do something you enjoy, scheduling time for exercise won’t seem like a chore. While it’s easy to get discouraged about aches and pains, remember that the effort is worth the benefits you’ll see—and feel—in your life.

atching aging parents decline physically and/or mentally can be one of the hardest things an adult child will ever experience. We are simply not prepared to see our role models, once so vital and strong, deteriorate before our eyes. Realizing that your parents may need more help is not always easy.

Reducing Hospital Readmission Rates Submitted by VNA-TIP Healthcare

Responding to a patient’s telemonitoring results, VNA-TIP HealthCare’s Coordinator discusses a new plan of care with the physician.

P

atient outcomes and hospital readmission rates garner great concern across the healthcare industry. Nationally, one in five Medicare patients is readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge, which costs approximately $17 billion per year according to a 2009 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

In hopes to improve both patient care and cost control, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) leads a national health care quality improvement program directed at reducing preventable hospital readmissions.

Currently the program focuses on reducing avoidable re-hospitalizations of patients with three health conditions: AMI (Anterior Myocardial Infarction or Heart Attack), Pneumonia, and CHF (Congestive Heart Failure). Soon, hospitals that report a higher than average amount of patients returning within a 30-day time period, will begin to incur MediPage 12 — Healthy Cells Magazine — Metro East Area ­— September 2012

care financial penalties. With the regulation’s threat to reimbursement, healthcare providers must quickly assess how to reduce hospital readmissions. Hospitals aren’t the only facet of the healthcare industry impacted either. Accountable care organizations, physicians, nursing homes, skilled facilities, and home health agencies are analyzing strategies to reduce hospital readmissions.

As a home healthcare agency, VNA-TIP HealthCare has responded to the challenge by assessing patients and identifying those considered high-risk for readmission to the hospital. If the patient is benchmarked as high-risk, several interventions are immediately implemented. VNATIP HealthCare provides home care, hospice, and private duty services to patients in their home environment and implements several critical programs to ensure patients can stay where they want—out of the hospital and in their homes.

VNA-TIP HealthCare identified four main areas where intervention could lead to a reduction of re-hospitalizations: enhanced transitional care from hospital to home, increased patient education and self-care support, multidisciplinary team coordination and patientcentered plan of care for end-of-life. VNA-TIP HealthCare acknowledges each of the main points with programs and materials in an effort to minimize instances which may have typically sent patients to the hospital. Some of the initiatives that VNA-TIP executes, resulting in reductions of hospitalizations and re-hospitalizations, are listed below.

Transition From Hospital To Home Transition is a major risk necessitating intervention. VNA-TIP HealthCare manages this risk through its commitment in assisting the patient, caregivers, and physicians in achieving a smooth transition from acute care to home care by utilizing the following programs: • T elemonitoring: VNA-TIP HealthCare utilizes telemonitoring to carefully monitor high-risk patients that are likely to return to the hospital. This technology communicates vital information directly from the patient’s home to VNA-TIP staff. The patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, weight, and Oxygen saturation rates are monitored every day. If any of the information is outside of the physician-established parameters, the agency notifies the patient and informs the physician. Should the physician feel immediate follow-up is necessary, a nursing visit will be completed to assess the patient in their home that same day. t is known by many names: “elder mistreatment”, “senior abuse”, or “abuse of older adults.” It can happen in a single act, can be a repeated act, or even a lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust. These acts or lack of action cause harm or distress to the older adult.

The main element to the harm of elder abuse is the “expectation of trust” of the older person towards their abuser. Abuse can come from many people: friend, family, neighbor, or someone that the older person relies on for services. In 2002, the World Health Organization brought attention to the issue of elder abuse, and over the past few years many government agencies and community professional groups have specified elder abuse as a social problem. If you know of elder abuse, you can contact different agencies in the area such as Area Agency on Aging or local authorities.

What is Elder Abuse?

Abuse can come in many forms. Physical abuse can be hitting, slapping, confinement, or giving excessive or improper medication.

Emotional abuse can be swearing at or humiliating a person. A common theme in emotional abuse is when the abuser uses something that matters to an older person and they use it to coerce them into a particular action. Financial abuse also known as financial exploitation, which is illegal or unauthorized use of a person’s property, money, pension, or even using coercion to change the older person’s will to name the abuser as their heir. Older adults are also victims of scams by strangers, sexual abuse, and neglect.

Some U.S. state laws also recognize elder abuse. This includes denying the civil and constitutional rights of a person who is old or who has been declared by court to be mentally incapacitated, or by abandonment, which is deserting a dependent person at an unattended place for a period of time.

Sign of abuse can include saying he or she is being abused, seeming depressed or withdrawn, seems afraid to make their own decisions, seems to be hiding something, putting off of medical appointments, or trying to leave their place of residence.

Elder Abuse caries many health consequences for the individual being abused, that can be life threatening. People who have suffered from elder abuse may experience declining functional abilities, increased dependency, increased sense of helplessness, increased stress, psychological decline, morbidity, depression, malnutrition, and dementia.

Individuals who suffer from conditions such as memory problems, physical disabilities, depression or loneliness, and substance abuse are at a greater risk for elder abuse.

It is hard for researchers to obtain accurate statistics on elder abuse, because it is largely a hidden problem and tends to be committed in the privacy of the elderly person’s home, and mostly by their family members. Victims are often unwilling to report their abuse for fear of others’ disbelief, fear of losing independence, or fear of losing social support.

Prevention Doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals play a vital role in assisting elder abuse victims. But not all cases are reported because individuals are not aware of state laws on elder abuse. Locally there is the Area Agency on Aging, and nationally there is the National Center on Elder Abuse, National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, and The Center for Elders and the Courts. A “Mommy Makeover” is actually a combination of procedures to erase or minimize the impact of pregnancy on the body. These include but are not limited to: • Breast Lift • Breast Augmentation • Tummy Tuck • Liposuction Common complaints after childbirth Complaints about body changes can include: • B reast: Deflation or sag (also known as ptosis), loss of fullness, and difficulty with clothing • A bdomen: Extra skin, “muffin top”, stretch marks, bulge in the middle • G eneralized areas: The arms & legs with poor shape, extra adiposity (i.e. saddle bags).

Why can’t I just work out?

The problem with working out is that no amount of exercise can improve these areas and in fact, can actually make them worse.

For example, in the breast, there may be more deflation & ptosis (sag), and in the abdomen, the excess skin bulge can become more prominent. Everyone has those problem areas that just won’t go away.

Breast For the treatment of the breast, it depends on the needs of the mother. A typical procedure is a breast lift to improve the sag and shape of the breast with or without an augmentation to return some of the fullness or to have a desired size change.

Abdomen There are several varieties of abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck).

A mini tummy tuck is for woman who really only have concern for a small area of skin laxity and stretch marks (stria) below the belly button (umbilicus). More common is a full abdominoplasty. This addresses the key changes of the abdomen from pregnancy. This allows the greatest improvement in the skin of the abdomen while at the same time tightening the “six pack” muscles in the midline to prevent a bulge in this area.

What is the recovery?

Recovery time is less than most people expect. Depending on the procedure, recovery can vary. Most patients return to many of the day-to-day activities in one to two weeks and are doing 95 percent of their normal life routines by six weeks. It’s important to know that the results continue to change and improve and final results can even take up to one to two years to fully appreciate.

Should I do multiple procedures at once?

The advantage of doing multiple procedures at once is the costs are lower and there is a single recovery time. The ability to complete all of the desired changes at once can depend on a patient’s needs. We try and limit the overall procedure length so occasionally we recommend staged procedures for patient safety or to improve the outcome.

What about scars?

This is a common question asked by patients. To provide the degree of change our patients are looking for, scars are necessary.

We always make every effort to limit or hide scars through small incisions in procedures such as body contouring, in anatomically hidden areas such as breast augmentation, and in easily concealable locations such as a planned bikini line with a tummy tuck.

Body Contouring This is traditionally completed through the liposuction of areas such as the arms, legs (saddle bag areas), or trunk to reach those “hard to lose” areas and to regain or improve pre-pregnancy shape.

What makes a good candidate?

I recommend waiting at least six months to one year after the last child. The mother should have specific post-baby body goals in mind. It is also a good idea to have a stable diet and weight.

How long do the actual procedures take?

It really depends on the type of procedures and the patient.

H

eel pain can be a nuisance or it can develop into a disabling condition. Heel pain is often caused by an inflammation of the Plantar Fascia, the band of fibrous tissue that extends from the heel to the toes. People with plantar fasciitis often describe the pain as worse when they get up in the morning or after they’ve been sitting for long periods of time. For some people, the pain subsides but returns after spending long periods of time on their feet.

The most common cause of plantar fasciitis relates to faulty structure of the foot. Wearing non-supportive footwear on hard, flat surfaces puts abnormal strain on the plantar fascia. Obesity also contributes to plantar fasciitis. After obtaining a medical history and examining your foot, your Podiatrist may order an x-ray, bone scan, or MRI to help distinguish different causes of heel pain.

Treatment of heel pain begins with implementation of simple at home strategies, which include: • W earing the right shoes: Wear supportive footwear at all times: indoors or outdoors • Limit aggravating activities: Avoid jogging or running and enjoy alternative activities such as swimming or cycling.

• Ice: Putting an ice pack on your heel for 20 minutes can reduce inflammation.

• Anti-inflammatory medicines: Advil and Aleve, plus other anti-inflammatory medicines, can help reduce inflammation. There are now also topical antiinflammatory prescription compounds that can reduce inflammation and pain.

• Lose weight If you still have pain after several weeks, your Podiatrist may add one or more of these approaches: • Orthotic devices: Custom orthotic devices that fit into your shoe help treat the underlying structural abnormalities.

Once you have scheduled your screening, the medical office should be able to provide you with any necessary information you need before your appointment. General guidelines are also available online at various websites. Some tips included at one site, www.womenshealth.gov, are: • Know your menstrual cycle. If you are still having menstrual periods, try to avoid making your mammogram appointment during the week before your period. Your breasts will be less tender and swollen, helping the mammogram be more comfortable for you and giving the technician a better, clearer picture of the breasts.

• Be up-front and open. If you have breast implants, be sure to tell your mammography facility that you have them when you make your appointment.

• Dress for comfort. Wear a shirt with shorts, pants, or a skirt instead of a dress. This way, you can undress from the waist up and leave the bottom portion of your clothes on when getting your mammogram. Although if you forget, don’t worry! Many facilities offer longer gowns accommodating patients, helping to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

• Beware of lotions! Don’t wear any deodorant, perfume, lotion, or powder under your arms or on your breasts on the day of your mammogram appointment. These things can make shadows show up on your mammogram. Some facilities do offer “wet wipes” in case you forget and end up applying lotions, but not all. It’s best to forgo the extra step(s) the morning of your exam just to be safe.

• It’s best to be thorough. If you have had mammograms at another facility, have those x-ray films sent to the new facility so that they can be compared to the new films. This way, any changes or variations in your breasts can be analyzed more comprehensively, providing you with additional reassurance.

• Know that you have a Choice. Your doctor may recommend where you get your mammogram but ultimately it is your choice. Call and compare prices before you choose the best provider for you.

Sleep Better, Live Better Local Doctor Treats Sleep Apnea Without CPAP or Surgery Submitted by Dentistry With TLC

A

local dentist in the Metro East area became involved in helping patients with sleep apnea about five years ago when her husband was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. The results of his sleep study showed that he stopped breathing over 70 times every hour. His physician recommended he wear a mask while sleeping to force air down his nose. This treatment of sleep apnea is referred to as CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy. Like many sleep apnea patients, he was unable to tolerate the mask and the forced air pressure. “How Will I Know That I Am in Labor?”

B

efore we experience labor, most of what we know about is learned from what we have seen on television or heard from friends and relations. The purpose of this article is to attempt to give some clear signs of labor. The definition of labor is determined by regular contractions that results in cervical change. There is false labor and true labor, simply put.

False labor is felt as irregular contractions called Braxton Hicks. Early in pregnancy, these contractions are few and far between. As your pregnancy approaches term, these contractions become more frequent.

These contractions, although strong at times, are not effective labor contractions. During the final weeks of the pregnancy, you may feel that the baby drops into the pelvis, but this may happen a few weeks to a few hours before labor begins. There is also an increase in vaginal discharge that may be the releasing of what is known as the “mucous plug”, but this is not an immediate sign that labor is about to start. The mucous plug, also, may be lost days before or at the onset of true labor.

What is “true labor”? True labor can be elusive until it is experienced. The birth of a baby does not guarantee that true labor has been experienced. If you were induced during your first pregnancy and given an epidural soon after the start of that process, you may not know how to recognize the start of true labor. There are four areas that can help couples determine when true labor has started.

• Timing of contractions • Change in movement • Strength of contractions • Pain of contractions The interval of contractions should be regular and greater than six contractions in one hour. The duration of those contractions can be between 30-70 seconds. Unlike false labor contractions that can be lessened or even stopped with changes in position and hydration, true labor contraction will continue through position changes. The strength of labor contractions will increase in intensity over time. They require deep breathing and usually do not allow regular conversation and activities. Lastly, false contractions are generally felt in the front, but true contractions will start in the low back and wrap around the front of the abdomen. If it is the first pregnancy, the patient should go to the hospital after experiencing these intense contractions for one hour. This should be modified based on distance the patient lives from the hospital. Bloody show or watery discharge that is persistent should prompt the patient to go to the hospital immediately. The true test that labor has begun is cervical change, in keeping with the definition of labor. The cervix should change regularly once labor is active every hour to 1.5 hours. On average, the longest labor is with the first child and subsequent labors can be more rapid, but as to everything in nature, this is not an absolute formula. Hopefully, the above guidelines can offer some assistance in determining when you are in labor.

osacea (pronounced "roh-ZAY-sha") manifests as generalized redness, visible blood vessels, rashy outbreaks, or pimply bumps on the face. The areas may feel hot with possible stinging. Rosacea can affect specific or all areas of the face.

Rosacea affects men and women alike and can last years. Onset is usually between the ages of 30 and 50 and the cause of rosacea is unknown. Individuals who flush/blush easily and those who are fair skinned are most often affected. Men are often affected more severely but women are more frequently affected (may be associated with menopause). Rosacea is commonly misdiagnosed as “adult acne.”

There are no specific tests to diagnose rosacea but a history of signs and symptoms evaluated by a health care professional or dermatologist can eliminate a misdiagnosis such as acne or rashes.

Persistent red bumps or pustules are indicative of inflammatory rosacea. Vascular rosacea is when small blood vessels (telangiectasia) become visible. In rare or severe cases, rhinophyma, the nose can become thickened and enlarged and possibly the cheeks can become puffy. This is most common in middle-aged men. In ocular rosacea, the eyes are affected with a gritty or burning sensation. Styes and eyelid redness can often occur. This should be addressed by an eye care professional or dermatologist. Ocular rosacea affects approximately one-half of those with skin rosacea.

Cases of rosacea can be exacerbated or “triggered” by emotional stress, some medications, foods (particularly spicy foods), caffeine, hot and alcoholic beverages, weather conditions (hot, cold, wind, high humidity), sun exposure, and some skin care products (mainly those with alcohol and fragrances). “Triggers” can be identified by keeping a diary and noting a pattern. It should be mentioned that alcohol “triggers” do not cause rosacea but may inflame the symptoms.

Left untreated, rosacea tends to get worse. Topical and oral medications may be indicated for treatment and avoiding “triggers” noted to exacerbate signs and symptoms will decrease them. Laser treatments can be appropriate especially for redness and visible veins. Gentle skin care and products are advisable.

Subtype 1: FACIAL REDNESS (erythematotelangiectatic rosacea) Flushing and persistent redness. Visible blood vessels may also appear.

Subtype 2: BUMPS AND PIMPLES (papulopustular rosacea) Persistent facial redness with bumps or pimples. Often seen following or with subtype 1.

Subtype 3: SKIN THICKENING (phymatous rosacea) Skin thickening and enlargement, usually around the nose.

Subtype 4: EYE IRRITATION (ocular rosacea) Watery or bloodshot appearance, irritation, burning or stinging.

Brighten Your Smile

verybody loves a bright white smile, and there are a variety of products and procedures available to help you improve yours. Some people are satisfied with the sparkle they get from daily oral hygiene and regular cleanings at the dentist’s office. If you decide that you want to whiten your teeth beyond this level, you should explore the whitening options your dentist can provide.

Start by speaking with your dentist. He or she can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. Yellow discolorations whiten best, while grey discolorations don’t whiten as well. If you have had bonding, tooth-colored fillings, or crowns placed on your front teeth, the whitener will not affect the color of these materials. This will cause the fillings or bonding to stand out against your newly whitened smile. In some cases, patients may want to investigate other options, like porcelain veneers and replacing old fillings and bonding. Having a good cleaning and checkup before you start the procedure helps the whitening process immensely. The hygienist will take any external stains off the surface of your teeth, which will brighten them. The dentist will examine your teeth to make sure you have no cavities, since the whitening gel will aggravate such teeth.

If you are a candidate for whitening, there are two popular ways to whiten your smile: In-office bleaching This procedure is called chair side bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. Impressions are made of your teeth to make custom whitening trays. The trays are used to continue the whitening process after the in-office process and touch up whitening at six-month intervals. The dental professional applies a gel to protect your gums.

A bleaching agent is then applied to the teeth in short, twenty minute whitening sessions, which may be repeated up to three times. In-office bleaching provides the optimum result you can get from the bleaching process. approaching special occasion, such as a wedding or reunion. In-office bleaching yields the best results for most people.

At-home bleaching At-home bleaching also starts with impressions of your teeth. Your office will custom make whitening trays for your teeth. Peroxide-based whiteners are used to bleach the enamel of your teeth. The gel is placed in your whitening tray, which is worn for 20 minutes a day for approximately two weeks. You can expect a brighter smile if you choose this option. Most notice that their teeth become a few shades lighter using this method.

Bleaching should be touched up every three to six months depending on your lifestyle. As you accumulate stain through foods, drinks and smoking, you will need to renew you whitening.

Flu Season Preparations Submitted by Illinois Oncology, Ltd.

his is a short summary of information on the flu and pneumococcal (PPV) Vaccines. Please discuss with your healthcare provider before proceeding with either vaccine.

A flu shot is actually a vaccine that causes your immune system to make antibodies that can either attack or kill the flu virus. Each season there is a new vaccine produced as the virus can change from year to year. Contrary to what many people think, you will not get the flu from either the flu shot or nasal spray as the virus is inactive or weakened.

The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older and especially for the following groups: • Age 50 and older • Have chronic health problems such as diabetes, and heart, kidney, or lung disease • Live in nursing homes or assisted living facilities • Healthcare workers • People with a weakened immune system • Women who are pregnant

Since it takes approximately two weeks for the vaccine to provide protection, it is advisable that vaccination begins as soon as the vaccine is available. Flu season usually begins in October and can continue as late as May. However, in the U.S., the number of cases usually peak in January and February.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs cause by the pneumococcus bacteria. This bacteria can also cause ear and sinus infections and, in some instances, meningitis.

Pneumococcus disease can occur year-round, unlike the flu season, which primarily occurs in the winter months. The pneumococcal vaccine is normally administered to adults once in a lifetime and is considered a Medicare Part B benefit, as is the flu vaccine.

These vaccines are both available through local pharmacies, health departments, home health agencies, and frequently, through your own healthcare provider.

Is Blepharitis of The Eyelids Making Your Life Miserable?

By Patricia K. Novelly, Director of Practice Relations, Illinois Eye Surgeons It’s common to have a mixture of both anterior and posterior forms of blepharitis at the same time, but in different degrees of severity.

Once you are diagnosed with chronic blepharitis, your eye doctor will most likely recommend an ongoing eyelid hygiene regime that can include commercially developed, over-the-counter lid scrubs or other recommended cleansing agents. Eyelid hygiene is crucial in the treatment of blepharitis. Your eye doctor may also recommend nutritional supplements with omega-3 fatty acids, such as flaxseed oil to maintain healthy gland function.

Anterior Blepharitis produce symptoms of bacteria-caused staphylococcal blepharitis and is considered more severe. It can result in loss of eyelashes and may lead to other serious conditions. Besides eyelid cleansing and hygiene, it may be necessary for your eye doctor to prescribe an antibiotic ointment for the eyelids. Pink eye due to bacteria—a common type of infection—may also occur simultaneously with blepharitis.

Viruses and other types of bacteria besides staphylococcus may be a factor in anterior blepharitis.

Posterior Blepharitis involves dysfunction of oil-secreting meibomian glands within the eyelids. The openings of these glands are at the inner edge of the eyelids, and oils secreted by the meibomian glands help prevent tear evaporation.

Symptoms of posterior blepharitis include inflamed and thickened eyelid margins, eyelid crusting, and a variety of other symptoms.

It is important to understand that a complete blepharitis cure may not exist. But good hygiene and prescription medicine can be effective in managing blepharitis, while warm compresses or other available technology such as LipiFlow® can help unclog obstructed meibomian glands.

lepharitis is a common eye disorder caused by either bacterial or skin condition such as dandruff of the scalp or acne rosacea. It is an inflammation of the eyelids causing red, irritated, itchy eyelids and the formation of dandruff-like scales on eyelashes. Although uncomfortable, blepharitis is not contagious and generally does not cause any permanent damage to eyesight. However, it can be reoccurring and result in missing or misdirected eyelashes and continued inflammation.

There are two types of blepharitis: • Anterior blepharitis occurs at the outside front edge of the eyelid where eyelashes are attached.

• Posterior blepharitis affects the inner edge of the eyelid.

To clean eyelids: •W ash your hands, then dip a clean washcloth, cotton swab, or gauze pad into your cleaning solution.

• Make sure you squeeze out any excess moisture.

• Gently wipe across your lashes and lid margin • Rinse with cool water.

•R epeat the process for your other eye, be sure to use a different washcloth, swab, or pad.

• I t may be recommended that you follow this regime several times daily to start, and then once daily thereafter.

When you first begin treatment, your eye doctor will recommend what cleansing agent to use, such as warm water, baby shampoo diluted with warm water, or a special over-the-counter product made specifically for cleansing the lids.

“Are You Dizzy? Vestibular Therapy…

I continue to build my strength and my balance has significantly improved. I am regaining speed. Occasionally, a quick movement of my head will make me dizzy, but the feeling quickly goes away. I still have some hearing loss in my right ear.

I want others in this situation to know that they can overcome this problem! My message is: “Don’t give up! Every moment of progress, no matter how small, counts! Don’t look back at where you were. Think of where you are going!”

hen I began vestibular therapy, I was very apprehensive.

Being a serious marathon runner who had suffered a head injury, I wasn’t sure if my life would ever return to normal.

My head injury resulted in severe dizziness, short-term memory loss, headaches, insomnia, problems concentrating, smell and hearing loss, and problems with balance. Before my head injury, I was planning to run a marathon where my goal was to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Unable to walk straight, I withdrew from the race in October 2011.

My doctor referred me to a physical therapist at PRORehab Physical Therapy. My first appointment was great! The therapist listened intently as I described my symptoms and took great interest in my care. With their personable and professional demeanor, we “clicked” right away! I attended therapy one time a week for eight weeks. My sessions consisted of exercises that normally would have been simple, yet were very difficult at times to perform. These exercises required a lot of neck/head movements and standing on balance boards. I also had to play “catch.” In order to improve my balance and diminish the vertigo, I did prescribed exercises daily at home.

There were good days and there were days when I struggled. I was frustrated and discouraged—wondering if I would ever be able to run again and regain any sense of normalcy. There were days that I was overwhelmed with directions on how to do certain exercises but PRORehab was there for me. Slowly the dizziness resolved and my balance improved.

I began my physical therapy in early December 2011 and finished in late January 2012. In April 2012, I ran my first major race since my vertigo had started. Not yet conditioned and ready for a full marathon, I ran a half marathon in 1 hour and 50 minutes. It was slower than last year, but considering all that I had been through, I was very pleased that I could run again.
