Genesis Wellness Programs Work For Sivyer Steel

S

ivyer Steel in Bettendorf was in the same situation as most employers across the country. Sivyer management was looking for solutions to the problem of soaring health costs for an employee team of 400.

The answer for Sivyer has been Genesis At Work, which has packaged solutions working for Genesis Health System, and offered them to business and government clients.

Sivyer has experienced a stabilization of employee health costs through a wellness program, health screenings of employees, and flu shots for employees.

But those benefits are not at the top of the list of important benefits experienced by Sivyer, according to CEO Arthur Gibeaut.

"Through the screenings, we detected two employees who were probably headed for heart attacks,'' Gibeaut explained. "That puts the benefit to programs like this in much more important terms than dollars and cents savings.''

One Sivyer employee, apparently in good health, had undiagnosed hypertension. The other employee had very high cholesterol levels. Because Sivyer participates in a screening and nutritional information program provided by Genesis called Naturally Slim®, the warning signs for the two employees were detected.

Wellness Works For Sivyer Steel Employees of Sivyer Steel and Genesis Health System are screened on an annual basis for the five risk factors of Metabolic Syndrome, a condition, which puts individuals at elevated risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other life-threatening illnesses.

The annual screening and blood draw determines an individual's baseline for waist measurement, blood pressure, triglycerides, fasting blood sugar, and cholesterol. The test also determines whether an employee is using tobacco products.

If employees have three or more of the risk factors, they can enroll in a 10-week Naturally Slim® program that discusses weight loss, responsible nutrition, exercise, reduction of sugar consumption, mindful eating, and the recognition of hunger levels.

To earn significant discounts on employee health care premiums, individuals must have fewer than three of the risk factors. If individuals do not reduce their number of risk factors below three and quit using tobacco after completing assistance programs, they pay a higher rate for health care premiums.

"Wellness programs like the one from Genesis work,'' Gibeaut said.

"Bringing it down to a level that will make sense for other businesses, for every dollar we spend on wellness, we save $9.30 in the cost of absenteeism and health care costs for our employees.”

"The benefits that we have seen can be proven. The national average of absenteeism per employee is 3.2 days. At Sivyer Steel in 2012, we are at 1.7 days. Our health care costs on a per-employee, annual basis, are 40 percent lower than the national average for similar businesses.''

Genesis Has Saved Nearly $50 Million Genesis Health System saved $47.4 million in health care costs between 2007 and 2011 while also improving the health of employees. Based on

the success of the program, Genesis now offers markets the solutions to employers on a regional basis as part of employee health plans.

Gibeaut said there are cost and production benefits, but he also emphasizes the positive message wellness programs send to employees.

"The dollars and cents benefits are obvious but there is a great additional benefit,'' he said. "Our most valuable assets are people. Without them, we have no company. There is nothing here.”

"Wellness programs demonstrate in a concrete way that you care about the people who make your company successful. We want them to be healthy and productive not only for our interests, but their own.''

By forming a wellness partnership with its employees and with health care providers, Sivyer is at the forefront of a transformation of health care.

A Greater Emphasis On Prevention Hospitals and health care professionals are going to be reimbursed in the near future based on their ability to manage chronic disease and prevent hospitalizations. There is going to be an increasing emphasis in the United States on wellness programs, personal responsibility, and effective management of chronic diseases to control the disease before hospitalization is necessary.

"We don't spend near enough time, energy, or resources on prevention,'' Gibeaut added. "Ninety percent of health care costs in this country are directly attributable to preventable illnesses. Should we expect the government to solve the problem of rising health care costs?

"Should we blame the wonderful health care professionals—the best in the world—or should we look to ourselves and say 'prevention is the key to stopping rising health care costs?'''

The wellness program is just one of the services Genesis At Work makes available to employers. Genesis At Work services include the Employee Assistance Program for employees facing a personal crisis or addiction. Workplace vaccinations for seasonal influenza are also available from Genesis.

Genesis has a comprehensive seasonal influenza vaccination program that reached more than 30,000 in the Quad Cities last year.

Last fall, Genesis provided seasonal influenza vaccinations to its own 5,000 employees; to nearly 9,500 elementary school children through Flu-Free Quad Cities; to 5,401 employees of business and government clients; and, to more than 12,000 to patients of Genesis Medical Center and Genesis Health Group.

Flu-Free Quad Cities targets elementary school children but indirectly benefits the community at large.

"If we can keep kids in school and learning and not at home sick with the flu, that means their parents can be at work, being productive for their employer and feeling healthy instead of missing work to provide care at home,'' said Tom Culliton, director, Genesis At Work. "Absolutely there are benefits to the companies we work with on a cost-control basis, but these programs are also just good for the wellness of valued employees.''

all brings the new crop of hard-shelled squash to the grocery store. These winter squash add an abundance of super nutrients to the table. Orange-fleshed squashes are especially high in beta-carotene, a nutrient important for healthy skin, immune system and night vision. A half-cup of cooked orange-flesh winter squash provides about 50 calories, a nutritional bargain.

Squash is easy to cook by following the cooking tips below: Cooking Directions Get squash ready to use in a wide assortment of recipes from soup to dessert by baking, steaming, or boiling. Roasting enhances squash’s natural sweetness.

Bake: Cut in half, remove seeds, and place cut-side down in a baking dish. Bake at 350o F or microwave on high until tender. Scoop flesh for recipes using cooked squash.

Roast: Cut into chunks, peel cut off, and toss with olive oil and seasonings. Place on a foil-lined shallow baking pan and roast at 475°F for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. Roast until they’re fork-tender.

Steam or boil: Cook peeled chunks in a small amount of simmering water or in a steamer until tender. Season and serve.

Roasted Winter Squash and Mozzarella Quesadillas This recipe will warm your taste buds, your belly now and any time of the year.

Serves: 6 Preparation time: 30 minutes All you need: 6 cups cubed butternut squash 1 ½ cups diced red bell peppers 1 tablespoon diced garlic 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 dashes salt 2 dashes black pepper ¾ cup diced tomatoes 6 tablespoons diced onion 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro, divided 6 (8-inch) whole wheat tortillas 1 ½ cups shredded fat-free mozzarella cheese, divided ½ cup trimmed, thinly sliced green onions

3. Spread vegetables on a foil-lined cookie sheet and roast for 20 minutes until they are tender and slightly caramelized.

4. While the squash mixture is cooking, combine the diced tomatoes and onions. Add 1 tablespoon of cilantro. Set aside to be used as salsa.

5. Lay tortillas on parchment-lined baking sheets. Place 1/4 cup mozzarella on one-half of each tortilla.

6. Distribute roasted squash mixture evenly on top of the cheese, followed by green onions and remaining cilantro. Fold tortillas in half to form quesadillas.

7. Place in a 200°F oven for 5 minutes, until the cheese is melted. Serve with fresh salsa on the side of the quesadilla.

Tip: For easer cutting, soften small squash by cooking in the microwave oven on HIGH for 3 to 5 minutes or until shell can be pierced with a knife.

Mindful Eating: Get Out Of Autopilot

ave you ever finished a candy bar and wished you had just one more bite? Are you surprised when your hand hits the bottom of the popcorn bucket at the movies?

Do you ever feel completely stuffed and miserable after you eat?

These are all symptoms of unconscious or mindless eating.

Many people eat while they watch TV, drive, work—even while talking on the telephone.

And many people eat too fast, so busy filling the next forkful that they don’t notice the bite in their mouth. Since your brain can only really focus on one thing at a time, you’ll miss the subtle signs of fullness so you won’t stop until you feel uncomfortable or until you run out of food. Most importantly, you won’t enjoy your food as much so you have to eat more to feel satisfied.

Eating is a natural, healthy, and pleasurable activity when it’s done to satisfy hunger. The bottom line is that weight management is not just about what you eat. How you eat matters just as much.

Choosing to eat “mindfully, in other words, giving food and eating your full attention, will allow you to have optimal satisfaction and enjoyment without eating to excess.

Mindful eating makes it possible for you to experience the difference between physical satisfaction and fullness. Mindful eating also allows you to feel more satisfied with smaller quantities of food. Learning to savor your food simply makes eating more pleasurable. Knowing what satisfies you and getting the most pleasure from your eating experiences are key factors for a lifetime of weight control.

Try the following strategies to help you identify your body’s signals and truly enjoy your food: • Start by recognizing whether you’re hungry before you begin eating. If you aren’t hungry, you won’t be as interested so it will be harder to stay focused. Besides, if a craving doesn’t come from hunger, eating will never satisfy it.

• Don’t wait until you’re famished. One of the keys to conscious eating is to keep your body adequately fed to avoid becoming overly hungry which increases the chance that you’ll overeat.

• Next, decide how full you want to be when you’re finished eating.

When you eat with the intention of feeling better when you’re done eating, you’re less likely to keep eating until the food is gone.

• Choose food that will satisfy both your body and your mind.

Our society is so obsessed with eating right that we sometimes eat things we don’t even like. However, satisfaction comes not just from fullness but from enjoying the taste of your food--without guilt.

Feeling guilty about eating certain foods actually causes more overeating, not less.

• Set the table in a pleasant manner. Creating a pleasant ambience adds to the enjoyment of eating and to your level of satisfaction.

Besides, you deserve it.

• Eat without distractions. If you eat while you’re distracted by watching television, driving, or talking on the telephone, you won’t be giving your food or your body’s signals your full attention. As a result, you may feel full but not satisfied.

• Eat when you’re sitting down. Choose one or two particular areas at home and at work that are only used for eating and eat only there.

For example, do not eat while standing over the sink, peering into the refrigerator or sitting in bed.

• Appreciate the occasion. Appreciate the atmosphere, the company, or simply the fact that you’re giving yourself the opportunity to sit down and enjoy your meal.

• Take a few breaths and center yourself before you begin eating.

This will help you slow down and give eating your full attention.

• A ppreciate the aroma and the appearance of your food.

Notice the colors, textures, and smells of the food and imagine what it will taste like.

• Decide which food looks the most appetizing and start eating that food first. If you save the best until last, you may want to eat it even if you are full.

• Savor the aromas and tastes of your food as you eat it. Put your fork down between bites and be conscious of all the different sensations you are experiencing.

• If you notice that you’re not enjoying what you chose, choose something else if possible. Eating food you don’t enjoy will leave you feeling dissatisfied.

• Pause in the middle of eating for at least two full minutes. Estimate how much more food it will take to fill you to comfortable satiety.

• Push your plate forward or get up from the table as soon as you feel satisfied. The desire to keep eating will pass quickly. Keep in mind that you’ll eat again when you’re hungry.

• Notice how you feel when you’re finished eating. If you overate, don’t punish yourself. Instead, be aware of the physical and/or emotional discomfort that often accompanies being overly full and create a plan to decrease the likelihood that you’ll overeat next time.

Once you’ve experienced the increased pleasure from eating mindfully, you may be motivated to become more mindful during other activities too. Living “in the moment” and becoming more aware can increase your enjoyment and effectiveness in everything you do.

Barrett’s Esophagus

What is Barrett’s esophagus?

Barrett’s esophagus results from an irritation in the lining of the esophagus caused by chronic reflux of the contents from the stomach and small intestine into the esophagus. The irritation causes the lining of the esophagus to change and become similar to the lining of the intestine and stomach (called Intestinal metaplasia).

What are the symptoms of Barrett’s esophagus?

Barrett’s esophagus does not cause signs or symptoms, but because there is a strong link between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Barrett’s esophagus, symptoms of Barrett’s esophagus may be similar to those of GERD. The symptoms might include: • A burning sensation under the chest • Regurgitation (backing up) of stomach acids • Difficulty swallowing (Note: This symptom requires immediate medical attention) What risk factors are associated with Barrett’s esophagus?

There are a number of risk factors for the development of Barrett’s esophagus, including: • Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease • Obesity • Increasing age • Caucasian ethnicity • Male gender • Family history of Barrett’s esophagus How is Barrett’s esophagus diagnosed?

The only way to confirm the diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus is with a test called an upper endoscopy. This involves inserting a small tube with a light (endoscope) through the throat and into the esophagus to look for a change in the lining of the esophagus.

While the appearance of the esophagus may suggest Barrett’s esophagus, the diagnosis can only be confirmed with small samples of tissue (biopsies) obtained through the endoscope. A pathologist will examine the tissue to make the diagnosis.

How is Barrett’s esophagus treated?

The treatment of Barrett’s esophagus is similar to the treatment of GERD. Treatment might begin with lifestyle changes, including: • Not eating certain foods • Not eating late in the evening • Not smoking Treatment is also likely to include the use of medications that will decrease acid production by the stomach. Patients with Barrett’s esophagus typically need prescription medications to reduce acid such as omeprazole (Prilosec®), lansoprazole (Prevacid®), pantoprazole (Protonix®), rabeprozole (Aciphex®), esomeprazole (Nexium®), or dexlansoprazole (Kapidex®). Omeprazole is now available as an over the counter preparation as well. These medications are typically given before breakfast once a day or, on occasion, before breakfast and dinner. are available as prescriptions or as over-the-counter medications.

Tagamet®, Zantac®, Axid®, and Pepcid® are generally not as effective in decreasing the acid damage to the esophagus that causes Barrett’s esophagus, but may relieve symptoms for some patients.

All patients with Barrett’s esophagus who are in reasonably good health should undergo endoscopic surveillance at appropriate intervals, which are determined by the Gastroenterologist.

What complications are associated with Barrett’s esophagus?

Barrett’s esophagus is a premalignant condition that may lead to the development of cancer of the esophagus in a small number of patients. The risk of developing cancer is approximately 0.5% each year. This type of cancer is called esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Esophageal cancer develops through a sequence of changes in the cells of the esophagus known as dysplasia. Dysplasia can only be detected by endoscopic biopsies. Patients with Barrett’s esophagus should have regular surveillance exams to detect cancer at an early and potentially curable stage.

How is Barrett’s esophagus with dysplasia or cancer treated?

Current treatments for Barrett’s esophagus with dysplasia or cancer include photodynamic therapy, radiofrequency ablation, cryotherapy, endoscopic mucosal resection, or surgical removal of almost all the esophagus.

Photodynamic therapy combines a light-sensitizing substance (Photofrin®) with the use of a laser. The Barrett’s lining is destroyed, along with the cancerous and precancerous tissue. This is rarely used anymore due to the cost, side effects, and problematic long-term results.

EAST MOLINE N U R S I N G & R E H A B I L I TAT I O N C E N T E R

Radiofrequency ablation (BARRX) involves the use of radiofrequency energy (an energy delivered via electrodes that is similar to microwave energy) to destroy the Barrett’s lining and replace it with normal esophageal cells. Results are promising for the treatment of low-grade dysplasia and high-grade dysplasia. The use of radiofrequency ablation for nondysplastic Barrett’s esophagus is controversial at present.

Cryotherapy involves freezing the lining of the esophagus with subsequent replacement with normal esophageal cells. This technique is available mostly in Tertiary care hospitals.

Endoscopic mucosal resection involves removing abnormal areas of the Barrett’s lining by the use of an endoscopically placed snare similar to what is used for colon polyps. Unlike other endoscopic techniques, endoscopic mucosal resection allows for better tissue evaluation by a pathologist. Any mucosal abnormalities should be removed by endoscopic mucosal resection prior to using other endoscopic or surgical techniques.

Surgical treatment of Barrett’s esophagus with cancer is used only when the patient is strong enough to handle surgery and has high-grade dysplasia or cancer. Often, people who have Barrett’s esophagus with cancer are older and cannot tolerate surgery. If surgery is chosen as a treatment, virtually the entire esophagus is removed and the stomach is pulled up into the neck.

Body Acidity vs. Alkalinity: Why Do You Need To Know The Difference?

(Part 1 of 2)

oday, many Americans have diets and lifestyles that have become extremely acidic. The foods we eat on a regular basis are very acid-forming, such as meats, pasteurized dairy products, trans-fats, refined prepackaged foods, coffee, soda, alcohol, tea, and carbonated drinks. Lifestyle habits such as lack of exercise, high stress, overloaded schedules, lack of sleep, stimulating electronic usage, taking pharmaceutical drugs all contribute to high forms of acidosis. Anxiety and living under pressure is also acid forming. Pollutions, household cleaning chemicals, and the natural aging process are all factors that lead to an acid build up in our bodies.

Benefits of an alkaline body system The potential of hydrogen, or pH, ranges from 0 (extremely acidic) to 14 (extremely alkaline). A pH of 5 for example, is 10 times as acidic as a pH of 6. The more alkaline we are, the easier it is for our blood to move throughout our bodies.

All injuries need blood to repair, and are more likely to heal faster and more completely when the surrounding tissues and blood are alkaline.

In an acidic body, aging is accelerated causing our blood vessels to thicken, wrinkle, and dry up.

The more acidic your cells, the harder it is for them to receive essential nutrients and oxygen, causing you to be less efficient and lethargic in our everyday functions. On the other hand, when acid waste is removed from your body, aging is slowed and you function at a higher level with greater ease.

The bottom line is that no injury or illness can repair as quickly or heal as completely without balancing pH and flushing excess acid waste from the body. If you are too acidic, you are unhealthy and will heal much more slowly, if at all.

How does our body deal with acid?

The primary organs that help our body maintain proper pH balance are the lungs and the kidneys. They both are on a constant look out to help buffer the blood or body fluids to maintain the tight range it must stay in. When the body is dehydrated or consuming a lot of toxic food or beverages, it puts more strain on the kidneys. Additionally, when you are stressed or tense, it causes more strain on your lungs. So maintaining a clean healthy lifestyle will allow your body to stay more alkalized.

There are many small things you can do to move towards an alkaline lifestyle. People often think they have to change everything and eat completely different to make a difference in their acid loads. Many times our body responds wonderfully to small simple baby steps.

To maintain optimum health or restore your health status there are a few basic rules you must follow. Remember it is all about consistency.

You may have not developed a condition overnight; therefore, you must realize it takes time for the body to reprogram itself and the cells. Rest assured, if you follow the basic rules, have a good attitude, and stay consistent, inevitably the body will change for the better.

Exercises, natural therapies, certain types of baths, certain foods, special minerals and supplements, and certain breathing styles will all

The best way to balance your biochemistry is to eat and drink more alkaline foods and make wise lifestyle choices. Take high quality mineral formulations to buffer the pH. Additionally, try to exercise at least three to five times per week for body alkalization. Deep diaphragm breathing allows more oxygen into your body which alkalizes your body chemistry.

Alkalizing your body with exercise has a great effect on the kidneys, liver, lungs, and lymphatic system. The more you elevate your heart rate and breathing rate the more oxygenated your blood. You will move your lymph fluids through the lymphatic vessels, leaving your body cleaner and more purified.

Another simple low cost way to improve your health is yoga. Yoga offers gentle stretching, increases flexibility, strength, and allows you to focus on breathing. Biking or hiking is another great way to de-stress and alkalize your body. Anytime you can connect with the outdoors, your body pH and health will improve.

Salt and Soda baths work great too. A few times a week, soak in a hot tub of water with 1-½ cups of Epsom salts and ¾ to 1 cup of baking soda. I also add a few drops of lavender oil and light a candle and put some soft relaxing music on. While you are in the tub soaking, do 5 deep diaphragm breaths and clear your mind. De-stressing will always alkalize your chemistry.

Most of us already know that exercise has so many positive health benefits. This is why you must start now, even if it is small baby steps with only 10 minutes a day working up to 20 minutes a day after a few weeks. Just start somewhere.

Make your exercise goal realistic to start with. Whatever is comfortable and attainable? Always be realistic so that you don’t give up!

How Do You Supplement Your Skin?

A Hearing Test for Dizziness?

W

hy is my doctor ordering a hearing test when I have dizziness? This seems a little counterintuitive, but it is correct. There are some conditions that can affect both our balance and our hearing. The hearing test provides valuable information for identifying the cause of your dizziness. This makes more sense when we examine how the ear is structured and how it functions.

There are three main parts of the ear: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear is the part you see on the side of your head as well as the tunnel leading to the ear drum. The middle ear is where the eardrum is along with the three bones behind it. The inner ear is a fluid filled space embedded in the skull behind the outer ear. The part we are most interested in for the question at hand is the inner ear. The inner ear has two primary functions.

One function is to transform the sound signals being received from the outer and middle ear into brain signals so that we can make sense of what we are hearing. This is done in the area known as the cochlea. Another function is to keep track of where the head is and whether or not the head is moving and is done in the area called the vestibule.

The vestibule has several different organs that are arranged perfectly between the two ears to detect movement in every possible direction. At the top of the vestibule, there are tubelike structures, known as the semicircular canals that are arranged in a circular format and at ninety degree angles from one another. These canals contain fluid. There are tiny hair cells that act as sensors at the base of each canal. As we move our head in different directions the fluid in the tubes lags behind for a brief period of time, then it moves to catch up. You can see how this works by watching the soda in a bottle as you move the bottle back and forth. The sensors at the bottom of the canals move with the head, because they are attached to the skull.

Therefore, when the fluid lags behind, it activates the sensors which then send a signal to the brain to tell it we are moving our head and in which direction. An example of the type of movement the canals detect would be turning your head to see what’s behind you.

Down below these semicircular canals, there are other organs known as the otoliths. The otoliths also have hair-cell structures that act as sensors and are arranged in different directions to account for horizontal or vertical movements of the head. There are crystals that are suspended in a gel-like fluid on top of the hair-cells. When we move in a horizontal or vertical direction, the crystals lag behind the movement, brushing the sensors—similar to how the semicircular canals work. The difference is the crystals are more sensitive to gravity since they are heavier. An example of when these organs are activated is when you put the brakes on in the car to slow down or stop.

All of these organs have identical partners in the other ear, which is how they account for all the different possible movements of the head.

They work in a partnership. So, if one ear has damage, the signals being sent to the brain are not clear and do not match up with the information being received from other areas, such as the vision or the sensors in the muscles and joints of the body. This causes us to feel dizzy. The fluid mentioned above is found throughout the vestibule as well as the cochlea. There is a direct connection between the vestibule and the cochlea and it is a very small space. The entire inner ear could fit on the fingernail of your pinky finger! Therefore, it is entirely possible that something causing damage to the vestibule could also cause damage to the cochlea, or the other way around.

Diagnosing the cause of dizziness is a very complicated process. It is very important that we get as many pieces of the puzzle together as we possibly can to be sure that we get the right diagnosis. The information we gather in the hearing test is very valuable when trying to sort out what is causing your dizziness. Even if we don’t detect anything in the hearing test, the information is still valuable because we could then consider conditions that don’t involve the cochlea. So, yes, your doctor may order a hearing test if you report feeling certain types of dizziness.

Breaking Free From Destructive Patterns

M

ing and exploring them, and as a result it can become difficult to effectively communicate what’s going on inside us. We need to be willing to confront the emotions that may exist as a result of what’s been passed down to us through our family history. If we want to change our behavior or beliefs, knowledge about our history becomes perhaps the most important data we need. In order to create something new we need to understand there is much more to our conscious thoughts and behaviors, and there is a deeper layer to the reasons why we think and behave the way we do.

Everything we experience in life is recorded in the cells of our body and mind. It becomes like the hard drive of a computer. It contains all the facets of our perceptions and we filter our experiences through these perceptions that we’ve stored. When we decide that we are unworthy because of negative filters, this begins a cycle of repetition and we begin to see all circumstances through this tainted lens even to the point of blocking out other views of reality that may exist simultaneously.

Until we are willing to identify and change our “hard drive”, which has stored all of our misperceptions, our reality will forever be influenced by our family’s habits. Over time however, we will develop coping mechanisms, but instead of them being progressive and healthy they will be more like a Band-Aid over a gushing wound. While these coping strategies may cover up some of the evidence of destruction, there will still be evidence of damage.

Emotions are clues to our core beliefs, and we should be willing to pay attention to them. They can provide us with information about self-perception, as they are always a reflection of what’s on the inside.

Unfortunately for most of us, we have been taught by our parents to ignore our feelings because often times they make those around us uncomfortable, particularly those who don’t know how to deal with their own emotions. It can bring about a perpetual state of an unhealthy exchange between us and others, and can therefore create relationships based on lies and a false sense of security. After all, we can’t possibly feel secure when we aren’t valued for being the person we were created to be, and instead are forced (by our emotions and negative filter) to become someone we were never meant to be.

When we begin to piece together the events of our past with greater understanding, we then become empowered to create a new reality.

Some of us find that emotions make us feel vulnerable and/or weak, so as a means to protect ourselves, we tend to avoid the things that cause us to feel insecure or powerless. Suppressing emotions can become the only way we handle them because dealing with them can seem overwhelming.

Term vs.permanent Permanent Insurance Term vs. lifeLife insurance The biggest appeal of term life insurance coverage is the initial price.

Especially when you’re young, the cost can be downright cheap compared to other products. Term insurance can stretch premium dollars during times of high protection needs and limited resources, such as while children are at home or until a mortgage is paid off. It can be ideal for short-term solutions.

However, term insurance is designed primarily to provide short-term, temporary protection. If you’ve owned term insurance for more than a few years, you know that your cost increases at each renewal. These increases climb sharply the older you get.

The cost can become prohibitively expensive in later years. The result: You could end up with no protection at the very time you need coverage the most.

It may be time to consider converting your term coverage to permanent, cash value life insurance. The benefits are many:

1. You can lock in protection for life. Term insurance is designed to

provide coverage for only a limited period of time. Permanent insurance provides life-long protection.

Senior Safety: Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls

A

s we age, time takes its toll on the bodily systems that keep us balanced, making us more prone to dangerous slips, trips, and falls. And while a fall can be a life-changing or even life-threatening event for an older adult, reducing one’s risk is easy.

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) recommends the following simple safety tips: Do a Home Safety Check At least one-third of all falls involve hazards within the home. Be sure to remove throw rugs and low furniture, eliminate clutter, and secure carpeting and other tripping hazards like electrical cords. Your home should be properly lit, so that even at night your vision is not impaired.

Install grab bars in your bathtub and handrails on your staircases.

Get Regular Exercise Start a exercise program that includes activities that improve strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. Walking, water workouts, and tai chi will not only contribute to your overall health, they can also reduce your risk of falls.

Consult a health care professional before getting started.

Manage Pain Differently “The same pills meant to make older patients with chronic pain more comfortable may also make them more vulnerable to falls,” says ACA President Dr. Keith Overland, who runs a practice in Norwalk, Connecticut “Chiropractic services, including spinal adjustments and manipulation, exercise recommendations, rehab, and nutritional and lifestyle counseling, are a great non-drug alternative to medications that affect your brain’s function and lead to dizziness or light-headedness.”

Taking multiple medications magnifies the risk of injury. Seniors who are on three or more drugs, or who have muscle weakness, are more likely to fall. Another risk factor is combining prescription drugs with alcohol, over-the-counter allergy or sleeping medications, painkillers, or cough suppressants. Ask your prescribing physician to review your medications and reduce your chances of falling by using the lowest effective dosage. Also, discuss the need for walking aids or supports while taking medications that can affect balance.

Prevent Serious Injury Osteoporosis makes bones less resistant to stress and more likely to fracture. Help limit the effects of osteoporosis by eating a diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D. Calcium-rich foods include milk, yogurt, fish, broccoli, collard greens, tofu, and almonds. You can get your daily dose of Vitamin D with a little bit of sunlight.

If you do find yourself falling, fall forward on your hands or land on your buttocks — not on your spine. Also, protect your head from striking furniture or the floor.

Improve Vision Age-related vision diseases, including cataracts and glaucoma, can alter your depth perception, visual acuity and susceptibility to glare. Schedule regular check-ups with your ophthalmologist and regularly clean your glasses. Improve your visibility so you can move safely and with ease.

Falls don’t have to be a part of getting older. A physical activity program, lifestyle changes, and home improvements can help you stay securely on your feet.

Here are some important orthopedic terms: • Elective: Some of the key words and phrases that come to mind with an elective surgery are non-emergency, planned, thought out, and no ambulance required. An elective surgery is a surgery you have chosen or selected to do, but is not required.
