Doctor of the Month HC: So do you start as a dentist, and then specialize?

Dr: I started as a general dentist in Davenport and went back to school to become a prosthodonic specialist in 1986. I’ve been in the Quad Cities for 30 years.

HC: Did you always want to be a dentist, or did you think about another profession.

Dr: I did undergrad at Iowa State University and went to University of Iowa Dental School. When I started at Iowa State, I was premed and got accepted in the college of medicine. But my sister was a nurse and would tell me how when she started her shift, the residents would be there. And when she left, the same residents were still at the hospital. And when she would go back to work the next morning, they were still there, wearing the same clothes as the day before. I didn’t think that would be a good fit for me.

So I applied to dental school also, and I got accepted for both in the same week.

I’m very happy with the decision I made. Dentistry has been a very happy and fulfilling profession.

HC: So what’s the best part about your job?

Dr: I guess impacting lives by giving patients back a smile or function by replacing the teeth they lost. Missing teeth is more than just about a smile, it impacts lives and function, and I am able to give back some of the function they were missing.

r. David Fritz is the first dentist that’s been awarded Doctor of the Month. He was nominated by Cynthia Lane of LeClaire, IA, who wrote a very heartfelt letter about Dr. Fritz. Cynthia didn’t have teeth for five years, and had a hard time finding a dentist that would help her in getting dentures. Dr. Fritz stepped up and saved the day!

Healthy Cells: So, what made you become a dentist and prosthodontist?

Dr Fritz: I had an interest when I was in dental school, and I had an affinity for it.

HC: Clarify what the difference is between a dentist and a prosthodontist?

Dr: A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the restoration and replacement of teeth, whether it’s just one tooth or all of them, like in Cynthia’s case. I work on crowns, bridges, dentures, partials, restore implants and aesthetics, such as teeth whitening, veneers. Many dentists can do that, but I am more involved on a greater scale.

HC: What are some of the most memorable things you’ve done in your job?

Dr: Well, it doesn’t get too crazy around here, but I have made dentures in a day. A patient had a mother who passed and lost her lower dentures, so I made her new ones for the mother’s funeral. I had another patient who called me for her aunt. The aunt was homebound and had cancer, but wanted to have teeth before she passed. So I went out to the house to meet the aunt and did all the procedures at the house.

HC: What about your personal life?

Dr: I live in Bettendorf and have 4 children, 2 who are dentists.

My daughter, Jennifer, who practices with me, is also a Prosthodontist, and my son, Brian, just graduated and is practicing in Davenport. I have one daughter who is a nurse at the University of Iowa hospital. My other daughter has a degree in health promotion and is presently a mother.

I spend time outdoors and fishing, and sports as a spectator. We are Hawkeye fans and go to the football and basketball games. I’m married and have 3 grandchildren, so now my main hobby is spoiling my grandkids.

Hearing Loss – Sources of Personal Support Dr. Molly Parker, Audiologist, Parker Audiology, PC (Don White Hearing Aid Service) Many suggestions are common sense but forgotten in frustration.

For example, rather than asking to repeat (“What?”), ask the other person to talk more slowly. At this point, the other person will either talk slower….or not. If the normal hearing person does not follow through with the request, then communication becomes the normal’s problem and not the hearing impaired’s problem because they are not following the request. Likewise, if the hearing impaired is not wearing their hearing aids, then that is their problem for not making an effort at being easier to talk with. In short, both parties have responsibility to the conversation.

These feelings are valid but negotiating around them is important too. A psychologist or clergy can be helpful to sort out these huge frustrations and establish other rules to reduce frustrations and create healthier relationships.

There are online sources of support which both sides can benefit. These provide education about hearing loss. hristmastime is nearly here again. Hearing loss continues to be a huge struggle for many families.

Hearing loss is a journey and a family problem. It takes one person to talk and another person to listen. That means that when progressive, permanent hearing loss is present, one person—and probably two people—are frustrated. Over time, interacting becomes a lot of work, and communication — as opposed to hearing issues---becomes a larger problem.

The average person waits 7 years before getting their hearing tested and then another 7 years to obtain hearing aids. This is 14 years of hearing frustration before an individual actually does something about it. If hearing loss is untreated, communication problems fester. Bad habits and hard feelings develop. Some people who purchased hearing aids do not use them. Others do not talk clearly enough. This creates resentment because, “It’s not my fault!” In reality, both sides have a valid concern.

There is help for both sides to re-learn how to effectively communicate. Education is key. The audiologist helps with communication strategies to rehabilitate hearing loss. Aural rehabilitation, defined, means to help the hearing impaired individual relearn how to control the situation so that he/she can hear as well as possible. www.healthycellsmagazine.com

Tips for Treating a Sick Child O

nce the winter months set in, it seems there’s always some sort of “bug” going around school. Between colds, flu, strep and other common illnesses, kids are lucky to escape this season without coming down with something. But if they do get sick, what should you do? These tips will help parents and caregivers see kids through the illness and get them back on the way to health.

Treating a Fever. Not every fever needs treatment. Fevers are part of how the body fights off infection. The American Academy of Pediatricians (AAP) says that if your child is eating and sleeping well, and has periods of playfulness, he or she probably doesn’t need any treatment. But consult with your child’s doctor to find out what’s best in each case. The AAP has these tips for taking care of a child with a fever: • Keep his room and your home comfortably cool, and dress him lightly.

• E ncourage her to drink extra fluid such as water, diluted fruit juices or commercially prepared oral electrolyte solutions.

• If the fever is a symptom of a highly contagious disease such as chickenpox or the flu, keep your child away from other children, elderly people, and people whose immune systems are compromised.

Treating Colds and Flu. While it’s tempting to seek medicinal treatment for every ailment, there is no cure for the cold or flu, and antibiotics don’t work on the viruses that cause colds and flu. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) says that headaches, muscle aches, sore throats and some fevers can be treated with pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Be sure you give the correct dose according to his or her age and weight.

• Cough and cold medicines are not recommended for children, especially those younger than two.

• Make sure your child rests and drinks plenty of fluids.

• A humidifier can help moisten the air in your child’s bedroom and will help with nasal congestion.

Medicating Children. When a doctor does prescribe an antibiotic or antiviral medication, there are several important things to be aware of. The AAP recommends finishing all prescribed doses of an antibiotic, even if the child starts to feel better soon. They also recommend: • Sticking with the schedule – don’t skip doses and ask the doctor what to do if a dose isn’t given on time.

• Giving the right amount – Never give a child more medicine because you think it might work better or faster. It could do more harm than good.

• Don’t try to hide the medicine – If a child hates the taste of the medicine, or tries to spit it out, it might be tempting to try to hide it in milk or food. But this could affect how well the medicine works, so do not do this unless specifically directed by your child’s doctor.

Salt Demystified

S

alt is a very simple topic that is generally hard to explain. Salt is a basic ingredient in most recipes and is great on popcorn, but unfortunately when it comes to wellness, salt has been made an enemy. Please read on for a different side of the story.

In your body there are four basic types of minerals; Calcium, Sodium, Magnesium and Potassium. These four minerals, which are electrolytes, are the building blocks of your body’s ability to function properly and stay hydrated. So what is an electrolyte? An electrolyte is a charged molecule that is used by the body to move fluid (especially water) around your body.

When there is an imbalance of those four electrolytes your body does everything it can to bring the electrolyte back into the proper balance. This is where table salt comes in. Table salt is just sodium chloride, which most processed foods are also extremely high in sodium. So your doctor or nutritionist is right by telling you to restrict your table salt intake because the more table salt you ingest, the more out of balance your electrolytes become. When these electrolytes are out of balance your body is going to retain fluid to dilute the imbalance and that can lead to high blood pressure.

Most of us, especially in today’s society, are very magnesium and potassium deficient in our diet. Magnesium and potassium are found in many fresh fruit and vegetables but most of us have a hard time getting enough of these foods into our diet.

Dentures have existed for literally thousands of years, even before dentists! They were made from wood, teeth, hardened rubber and ivory, and were very painful and difficult to wear for any period of time. Your dentist should be an expert at sizing and fitting patients with dentures, and makes sure they allow you to eat, talk and smile confidently. If you do forget to have them re-fitted, it becomes more likely they may break, and, over time it may become more complicated for the dentist to restore your original smile. Also, any significant weight change, either a gain or loss of weight can affect how tightly your dentures fit.

I

t seems these days that American society has become more open minded to natural healing. With a plethora of modalities being introduced to our western world, we as a people are quickly learning the benefits of non-invasive therapeutics. One such treatment, known as steam therapy, has been practiced in many cultures all over the world since the times of our ancestors.

Remembrance Tree Illuminates Hospice Needs

Medicare beneficiaries forfeit their Medicare coverage if they choose Hospice care.

Beneficiaries retain full Medicare coverage for any healthcare needs not related to the terminal diagnosis, even if they elect hospice care. However, they must continue to pay the applicable deductible and coinsurance amounts under the original Medicare plan.

Hospice services can be provided in homes, in nursing homes and at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf.

The National Osteoporosis Foundation says that approximately one in two women, and up to one in four men over age 50 will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture in their remaining lifetime.

Bone health needs to be a priority for people of all ages.

One simple way to improve bone health is to make sure your diet includes bone-building nutrients like calcium, Vitamin D and phytonutrients.

The griever becomes very familiar with and loyal to the isolation that seems to protect them.

We have been taught, incorrectly, that grievers want and need to be alone. And, we have been taught, also incorrectly, that grievers do not want to talk about the losses they have experienced. The griever, caught between the treatment they receive from well intentioned friends and their own fears, begins to become very familiar with being alone.

So far we have identified Pain, Isolation, and Loneliness as highly probable areas of familiarity for grieving people. It is tragic when a griever, already struggling with the normal and natural emotions caused by loss, is further limited by some habits that do not enhance or encourage completion and recovery from significant emotional loss.

Familiar is not necessarily good, it is only familiar. Comfortable is not necessarily good, it is often just familiar. The old cliche, “Better the devil I know then the devil I don’t know,” almost explains our loyalty to the familiarity of Pain, Isolation and Loneli-

It is essential that we begin to become familiar with actions, skills and behaviors that will lead to successful recovery from significant emotional losses. It does not require any more energy to practice helpful things than unhelpful ones. The Grief Recovery Handbook is an excellent source of appropriate and effective Grief Recovery® tools that can lead to completion of familiar behaviors or beliefs that are not helping us improve our lives.

Still Haven’t Moved Your 401(k) from Your Old Employer?

I

f you still haven’t moved your 401(k) from your old employer, you are not alone. In fact, according to the Profit Sharing/401k Council of America there are 15 million accounts in the U.S. retirement system that employees have left with their former employer. Those 15 million accounts aren’t just the folks with a couple of nickels in the plan. According to Hewitt Associates nearly half of those with balances of $100,000 or more haven’t made the move, which means that you could be leaving a substantial portion of your retirement nest egg in the hands of your former employer.

It isn’t too late… You essentially have three options regarding your 401(k) plan when you leave your employer. First, you can take the balance as cash and pay the applicable taxes and possible penalties. Second, you can typically leave your balance in the retirement plan as long as you have a balance of $5,000 or greater. Third, you can remove the balance and “rollover” to another tax-deferred retirement account (i.e. Rollover IRA).

If at all possible, you should try to avoid the first option if you ever plan on having some sort of financial security in your golden years; however, according to Hewitt Associates nearly 45 percent of employees take cash distributions. Unfortunately, the applicable taxes and penalties take a substantial toll on your retirement nest egg. The costs can exceed 35% of your balance (20% mandatory federal tax withholding, 5% tax in the state of Iowa, and a 10% penalty for taking the withdrawal before age 59.5).

As for the second option, it is often times the default decision when employees do not fully understand the options available to them. According to Hewitt Associates 32% of people leave their funds in the plan.

The third option gives you the ability to keep the funds taxdeferred and allow all future earnings to grow tax-deferred. According to Hewitt Associates 23% of employees rollover their accounts. Here are a few additional reasons as to why you may want to make one of your new year’s resolutions a tax-free rollover to a Rollover IRA. • An IRA is yours and no longer connected to your former employer. By keeping your money in your former 401(k) plan even something as simple as an address change may require you to stay in contact with your former employer.

• I RAs offer unlimited investment options. Your 401(k) plan may only provide a limited menu of investment options. Switching to an IRA allows you to invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, commodities, and even real estate which in turn can lead to better performance.

• Fees. Watch out for those fees that your former employer will no longer cover for you. More and more employers are charging ex-employees account maintenance fees.

• Accessing your retirement funds is typically easier in an IRA.

a. I RAs do not require a mandatory 20% federal withholding unlike employer-sponsored retirement plans. IRAs also offer more exceptions to the 10% early withdrawal penalty.

b. IRAs allow partial distributions if you need access to a portion of your retirement account. Many employer-sponsored retirement plans only grant entire lump sum distributions after you leave employment.

•G reater flexibility for beneficiary planning. Although recent regulations have narrowed the gap, there are still some advantages to the beneficiary options available in an IRA versus those provided in a 401(k) plan.

•T he complete financial planning picture. Making the move to an IRA gives you and your financial advisor the ability to put together a complete investment plan to ensure you are on track to reach your retirement goals.

Don’t forget to consider the possibility of converting your 401(k) plan directly into a Roth IRA. The Roth IRA is a very different option than the Rollover IRA. As mentioned earlier in this article the Rollover IRA keeps the funds tax-deferred (contributions and earnings). This allows you to postpone paying the taxes until your retirement years when you actually begin withdrawals. The Roth IRA requires you to pay taxes on all contributions in the year in which the contribution is made; however, the contributions and earnings can be withdrawn tax-free in your retirement years.

ately it seems as though many celebrities are using gluten free diets in conjunction with their exercise programs to help lose and maintain their weight. From Gwyneth Paltrow to Ann Hathaway gluten free menus are on the rise. Chelsea Clinton even served a gluten free cake at her wedding last month. So are these diets legit or just a passing phase? What does gluten free mean?

It is said that 1 in 133 Americans suffer from an allergy to gluten. This is referred to as Celiac Disease. Those who suffer from Celiac Disease have a hard time digesting wheat, rye and barley. If you have a sensitivity or allergy to gluten, a gluten free diet is definitely necessary and can help to prevent gastrointestinal cancer and increase the quality of one’s life. For those who do not suffer from a gluten allergy, a gluten free diet will not hurt, but does not show many benefits in long term weight loss.

Can gluten free work for short term weight loss? Possibly. As with cutting any food group from your daily diet, greatly restrict-

ing caloric intake will result in short term weight loss. What many people fail to realize, however, is that gluten free does not mean that a food is low calorie. In addition, many of the foods that are gluten free have more sugars and fats added into them to make them more flavorful, this also adds more calories many times. In the long term, it would be a better option to talk with your personal trainer or nutritional consultant to find a balanced approach to weight loss that can be easily maintained.

Sticking to a true gluten free diet can be extremely restrictive.

If a gluten free diet is necessary for your health it is important to get nutritional guidance from a dietician in order to insure you are still getting all the necessary nutritional requirements.

New Research Finds Sugar In Moderation Isn’t Bad For Your Heart

W

ith sugar consumption continuing to be linked to different ailments, some surprising new research indicates people can include added sugars as part of a balanced diet without increasing their risk of heart disease or weight gain.

The key is moderation and maintaining other healthy habits.

Consuming fructose from added sugars at levels found in the average American diet does not lead to weight gain or increased risk for heart disease when part of a weight-stable diet, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2010 conference.

This marks the first time researchers have measured the effects of added sugars consumption on body weight, total cholesterol and triglycerides levels, when consumed at levels typical of the general population.

“These findings demonstrate that added sugars, whether from table sugar or high fructose corn syrup, do not promote weight gain or increase total cholesterol, triglycerides or LDL cholesterol when coupled with a balanced diet,” said Dr. James Rippe, a cardiologist who is director of the Lifestyle Medicine Initiative at Orlando Regional Healthcare and the study’s chief investigator.

Interestingly, the new study was accepted for presentation at the AHA conference even though it conflicts with the association’s recommendations. The AHA recommends men and women consume no more than 100 and 150

calories of added sugars daily (about 38 grams), though more than 90 percent of Americans consume more -- with an average consumption rate of 345 calories of added sugar daily.

Rippe cautions that the new findings shouldn’t lead people to increase consumption of the sweet stuff and that moderation is still the key.

“Although this study is not license to over-indulge, it does inform us we can enjoy sugar in moderation as long as we are following a healthy lifestyle. That’s an important take-away for people like moms who may want to use added sweeteners to make healthy foods more attractive to their children.”

Table sugar (sucrose) is the leading source of added sugar in the American diet, followed by high fructose corn syrup (corn sugar). Sugar and high fructose corn syrup contain nearly the same one-to-one ratio of two simple sugars: fructose and glucose.

In the double-blind study, which was supported by an unrestricted grant from the Corn Refiners Association, researchers followed 64 overweight and obese people who were placed on a weight-stable diet for 10 weeks. The diet incorporated sucrosesweetened or high fructose corn syrup-sweetened low-fat milk, at 10 percent or 20 percent of total calories. These fructose consumption levels were two- to four-times greater than AHA recommendations.

After 10 weeks, there was no change in body weight in the group. There also were no changes in total cholesterol, triglycerides or “bad” LDL cholesterol. The participants also didn’t experience elevated levels of a protein that indicates increased heart disease risk and had no changes in their levels of “good” HDL cholesterol.

fter our meeting with Dr. Williams, Keith and I felt more positive about our ability to recover our sex life. Buoyed by his assurances, self-confidence slowly returned in both of us.

We began to deal with our problems one at a time as Dr. Williams had suggested, and started with the frequency of our lovemaking.

We had learned that regular and consistent sex was a vital component in our marriage. Since we couldn’t rely on Keith’s body to drive us into lovemaking, we had to become intentional about making sure it happened.

We decided that, for the time being, we would keep to a schedule. Keith asked me to watch the calendar and hold us to our commitment — and to be the initiator if necessary. He said that with his lack of physical cues, he didn’t feel up to the task, but said he would respond positively to my advances.

From that day forward, we’ve made love regularly. The schedule, we felt, didn’t “force us” into bed. In fact, it was an intense desire to get better that sparked our sex dates. We were eager to learn the “new rules” of our lovemaking. And the “sex schedule” and “no rejection” rules provided the safety we needed to continue trying.

It’s clear to me that I have to be a much more assertive partner if Keith is going to get anything out of these “sex dates.”

It’s not enough for me to just initiate sex and make sure it happens, I have to make it exciting. I have to do things to turn Keith on and keep him interested.

I think I was expecting too much of him before. I wanted him to walk when he was still crippled. Now I realize it’s going to take a long time for us to figure everything out.

I started looking for ways to add variety to our lovemaking and to make the experience more exciting. I began to use candles, music, scented oils and lotions again, I also “staged” our sex to occur in various locations, both inside and outside the house.

One evening I planned a tryst in our orchard, surprising Keith with a picnic and lovemaking under the apple trees.

Being assertive and sexually creative did not come naturally to me, but the fear of losing my marriage drove me to ignore my inhibitions.

In time, I began to feel more at ease, and, as an added incentive, there was Keith’s praise. He was pleased and humbled by my behavior.

We were making progress in small steps, and our recovery was going well. But we still experienced frequent and persistent setbacks.

There were many times when our lovemaking seemed to depress Keith more than excite him.

When his spirits were low, Keith’s mood swings would vary drastically, as they had during the previous year and a half. At one moment he could be sad, the next resentful.

During these episodes, I tried hard to be the sounding board Dr. Williams had suggested. I was learning to listen to Keith’s pain — waiting until he got it all out, and empathizing with his feelings.

Journal Entry, May 4, 1996

I feel so bad about all those months I spent discounting Keith’s despair. How many times did he try to talk and I didn’t listen? How could I have been so foolish?

I’m beginning to understand how deeply this issue cuts to the very heart of a man’s psyche. I think I can now appreciate that it’s natural for a man to feel impotent…when he is impotent.

Later that summer, when it was time for a recheck of his PSA, Keith’s frustration was running high.

Dr. Barrett entered the room and, in his usual style, pulled his chair close and leaned forward.

“So how are you doing Keith?” he asked. For the next few minutes, Keith unloaded on Dr. Barrett. He told him about his frustration with the shots, his concern that his desire was never going to return, and the anger and despondence he often felt.

When he was done venting, he paused momentarily. “But things are getting better,” Keith concluded. “We’ve been to Dr. Williams, as you know. And he is a big help.”

“Keith, I know you’ve had a hard time, and I’m really sorry about that,” he stated with feeling. “This is a rough situation.”

“But you will get through this. It may not seem that way right now, but you will. And, while it’s hard for you to believe, someday you’ll probably even be glad you had the surgery.”

By fall, Keith and I had accepted as “normal” the fact that, for us, lovemaking would forever begin as a mental rather than physical process.

Starting to make love unaroused meant learning to trust that the body would eventually follow the mind’s lead.

During those first few months, Keith was very tentative about beginning to have sex when he had no urge to drive him and when he was doubtful of his capability to regain desire.

But as the months passed and we continued to make love consistently — working together to give each other sexual pleasure — Keith realized that his body could indeed develop arousal. Giving enough stimulation he could again experience some of the lust he thought he had lost completely.

But even as Keith realized he could experience arousal, he now had difficulty maintaining his desire.

At first, Keith tried going through the motions of being an assertive lover — thinking that perhaps his body could access some latent memory of his past strong libido. But that didn’t help much.

Then he tried experimenting with the timing of the injections. That made a big difference. As soon as Keith changed from injecting himself during lovemaking to prior to lovemaking his arousal and sustainability increased dramatically. His desire responded to my touch, increasing and decreasing as we progressed through lovemaking.

“It’s not as strong as before my surgery, but it’s enough to keep me interested,” Keith told me. “Knowing what it feels like to have no interest, I’ll take this any day!”

Changing the timing of Keith’s injections was a major breakthrough for us. It not only helped him to get aroused and sustain the feeling, it also altered our attitudes toward using the injections. For the first time, we could even see advantages to using them.

With Keith’s new level of responsiveness, the intensity of our lovemaking increased significantly, and we thought we were now recovered. We assumed that things were as good as they could get. Love had returned to our bed, and we were content.

But we had not arrived at the finish line of our recovery yet. As the year came to a close, we were about to experience one of our most significant breakthroughs yet — learning a new definition of intimacy.
