broke my mom’s pearl necklace. It was the first time my father beat my little hands purple. I begged him to stop through my terrified eyes as tears of pain rolled down my innocent face. That day I broke as well. I was the broken strand and the pearls are my life lessons. It took a life time of synchronistic events for the Universe to prepare me to find peace within my self and repair my strand. One of my sparkling lessons after self realization, that I was able to string on my strand was forgiveness.

thought of accepting life on life’s terms or other people for who they were. Today, after having a spiritual transformation and discovering and uncovering my heart and soul from under many layers of armor and releasing my ego from it’s duty of protecting me, “letting go,” I am able to accept. Acceptance doesn’t mean we have to like what we are accepting, it allows us to stop resisting. Living through my ego and fear were my enemies. Today, living through my heart and going with the flow of life instead of trying to control it is what enables me to cultivate compassion and love and most important forgiveness. Forgiveness releases us from ourselves and others from limitations. It also enables us and those who we have forgiven to learn and grow from the lesson in the act of the forgiveness. Some of us view forgiveness as a weakness of defeat, losing, or giving in. In actuality, forgiveness is a strength. Forgiveness is to abandon from judgement and fears of others and life making space for positive attributes of peace and love.
Acceptance doesn't mean we have to like what we are accepting, It allows us to stop resisting.
In my memoir Strand of Pearls, I have weaved my internal reactions to the experiences of my life’s adversities, varying from abuse, loss, tragedy and addiction with the thematic flow of pearls of life lessons and challenges. continued on page 3. . .

The following passage from my memoir is a declaration of forgiveness to my parents. “Today Mom has labeled herself an unfit mother for allowing those beatings to happen. When I was a child, I blamed her for not saving me. I’ve assured her that I no longer blame her. Forgiveness softens us and others. Now that I am an adult, I understand the position Mom was in. I don’t even blame my dad, because he was sick and didn’t know how to recover. I forgave him and have compassion for him.” Forgiving is not always an easy act to follow through with but it is a form of healing oneself and extending a hand to help others heal as well. By forgiving my mother for circumstances out of her control it has enabled us both to heal and love. My father passed when I was 23 and it took me almost as many years to forgive him. The forgiveness of his abuse has released me from his control that he once had over me physically and for years mentally and emotionally. My body, mind and soul are now free and living in peace and love. Deborah Livingston is the author of a just released memoir: Strand of Pearls, One Womans Journey to Light and Peace, on spiritual transformation. Deborah recounts her darkest adversities of childhood abuse, death, teenage tragedy and adult addiction. She leads the reader from darkness and plants the seeds of light, peace and love that is born within all. Deborah is a new author joining the Hay House 2012 I Can Do It Conference. Getting your body ready
to perform any physical task whether it’s a rigorous sporting event or just walking the dog is a key component of injury prevention. Many common injuries are less likely with a proper warm-up. A proper warm-up is not just stretching your muscles. You have to address several different areas to get your body ready for activity. The first area is getting increased blood flow to the body parts you are about to use. For running, this is obviously
Proper Warm-Up your legs. The best way to increase blood flow is to get the heart rate up. You can increase your heart rate in several ways, including brisk walking, stationary bike, elliptical or producing dynamic body movements. Once the heart rate is up and blood flow is increased, you want to work on increasing your range of motion (ROM). This is not just stretching your muscles, but increasing elasticity ligaments and joints as well. Oldfashioned static stretching is not as effective at warming up as using a “dynamic warm-up.” A dynamic warmup involves moving your body into positions that will start to increase ROM and elasticity, specifically in the body parts you are about to use. Examples of dynamic warm-ups are walking with high knees, or traveling lunges to increase lower extremity flexibility. Static stretching still has its place after a workout or after any vigorous activity. In fact research shows static stretching is more beneficial when done after exercise. Other ways to increase ROM include soft tissue massage and foam
rolling to break up adhesions or muscle spasm, which limit your ROM. The last area to focus on is possibly the most important for injury prevention in athletes and is often overlooked. Similar to dynamic warmup to increase ROM, athletes should perform neuromuscular training during warm-up. This is targeted exercise to focus on balance and agility, mimicking the movements of their sport or activity. This will serve to get the brain talking to the muscles more efficiently. Examples of this include jumping prior to playing basketball, focusing on flexing knees and maintaining proper hip position. Proper technique is the key to preventing injury, and practicing your technique during warm-up has been shown to decrease risk of injury in many research studies. Timothy A. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the ideal blood sugar goals are 80-130 mg/dl before eating and no higher than 140mg/dl 2 hours after eating. Did you know that Carbohydrates have the biggest effect on your blood sugar. Distribute them evenly during the day. “Carbs” include breads, chips, pretzels, cereals, crackers, candy, desserts, starchy beans, fruits, juice, starchy vegetables, sugar sweetened sodas, and milk products. Consume carbs together with proteins (fish,
meat, eggs, dairy, nuts), high fiber vegetables, and healthy fats. Certain alcoholic drinks are also high in carbohydrates (for example: beer, sweet wines, and sweet liqueurs.) Alcohol inhibits the liver from releasing stored glucose (and may lower one’s blood sugar initially; however, a rebound effect—of unusually high blood sugars—can also occur). Consumer Products Contain Potentially Harmful Chemicals Not Listed on Labels Toxic chemicals linked to the
rising rates of endocrine disruption related disease on the rise were found in a broad array of consumer products and reported in a peer reviewed article in Environmental Health Perspectives today. The Newton based Silent Spring Institute tested 213 consumer products, including cleaning products, cosmetics, sunscreens, shower curtains, air fresheners, drier sheets, and other household goods made by Colgate, Unilever, S.C. Johnson, Johnson and Johnson, Procter & Gamble, Seventh Generation, and Ecover among other manufacturers. Silent Spring tested 66 different chemicals, finding 55 of them in the products. All of the 42 conventional product samples contained at least 2 and as many as 22 of the tested toxic chemicals. Of the 43 alternative products tested, 32 contained at least one toxic chemical. Everyday household products can contain chemicals that affect hormones (EDCs) and asthma.
Unfortunately, manufacturers aren’t required to list all ingredients and terms like “organic” and “natural” are not regulated, so it can be hard to tell what’s in products and if they’re safe.
How can I reduce my exposures?
You can reduce your exposures to EDCs and asthma-associated chemicals in consumer products by following these tips. Silent Spring Institute tested a wide range of consumer products to identify healthier choices. While research continues, check out these tips before you head to the store. In doing so, you can dramatically reduce your exposures to EDCs and asthmaassociated chemicals in consumer products CHOOSE: • Fewer products. • Plant-based ingredients.
• Plain
water, baking soda, and vinegar for cleaning. • Shade, hats, and tightly woven fabric cover-ups for sun protection. AVOID:
• Fragrances
in cleaning and personal care products. • Vinyl products, especially pillow and mattress protectors. • Antimicrobials in soap, toothpaste and other products (watch out for “antibacterial,” “antimicrobial,” “triclosan” and “triclocarban” on the label). • Stain resistant furniture sprays or clothing. • Lavender and tea tree oil. • Parabens in lotions, deodorants, shampoos and other cosmetics (look for “paraben-free”; watch out for “methylparaben,” “ethylparaben” and “butylparaben on the label). • Cyclosiloxanes in sunscreen and hair products (watch out for “cyclomethicone” on the label) www.silentspring.org

With this complex soup of chemicals, consumers would have to be toxicologists to interpret the labels. It’s time that the government stepped in and required that consumer products be made safely.” In Massachusetts there is a legislative proposal that would do just that. create a program to systematically replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives wherever feasible. The Safer Alternatives Bill is currently before the Senate Committee on Ways and Means. “The Safer Alternatives Bill is common sense legislation to protect consumers and workers from toxic hazards and to support businesses to innovate,” said State Senator Marc R. Pacheco (D-Taunton) Chair of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture. “This study reinforces the need for a comprehensive program that addresses the unnecessary use of toxic chemicals in a systematic way.” “This data shows that hazardous chemicals are found in the majority of every-day household products, and we need to do a better job of protecting people,” said Senator Katherine Clark (D-Melrose). “I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will join me

as we work to protect families and communities with passage of the Safer Alternatives Bill.” Silent Spring sent products to Battelle Labs in Ohio for testing. Some of the chemicals that were found included parabens (found in personal care products), bisphenol A (found in some plastics), triclosan (an anti-bacterial agent found in hand soaps and other products), fragrances, phthalates (found in plastics and personal care products) and other chemicals that are linked to asthma or endocrine disruption. Environmental health advocates across the nation see this new study as confirmation that ubiquitous chemical exposure is playing a factor in adverse health impacts. No VOC Paint & Eco Friendly Paint
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain
solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions. Paints, finishes, and stains can release low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), toxic emissions, into your cozy sealed-up home for years after application. The source of these toxins is a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which, until recently, were essential to the performance of the paint. With advances in the industry and homeowners seeking alternatives, low VOC and zero VOC paints are widely available, just as durable, and much less harmful.

Ayurveda for
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Jennifer was puzzled. A
friend had recommended Ayurveda for Jennifer’s son who had been diagnosed with, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). She thought ADD, ADHD are such new diseases, how can Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old science, have a solution for it? What Jennifer did not know was that Ayurveda is an energy science. Energy controls all actions and functions in the body. Disease is a manifestation of an imbalance in the underlying or primary energies known as Doshas in Ayurveda. Instead of treating the disease, Ayurveda treats the cause of the symptoms, removing the factors causing the disturbance and reestablishing the balance of Doshas or energies. I observed Adam, Jennifer’s son at my office. He was a cute little boy, slender in body with a very expressive face. He ran around constantly, not paying attention to his mother. I took the opportunity to just hold him, gently rubbed my hands around his curly hair for few minutes and noticed how he calmed down, started smiling at me and then took off running again. I could see his major energy dosha was Vata. Among the three energies; Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha, Vata is the energy of action. It controls all the movements and nervous impulses in the body. Naturally when Vata is aggravated or increases, it results in more activity. Chronic aggravation of Vata energies in a Vata child will create the, ADHD syndrome. When I asked Jennifer, about his appetite and elimination, she mentioned that “it goes up and down and he gets constipated often. The days he gets good bowel movements he is at his best behavior”. Jennifer hadn’t made that connection before.

jury pool room of the county court! Being in a court room is prompting thoughts about judges, juries, the justice system and our own inner jury; what I call the Itty Bitty Sh---y Committee. (You can fill in the blanks). Understanding and taking charge of the Committee is essential to the Inner Work of Success and Personal Leadership. The Committee represents parts or structures of the personality that make sense of the world and our place in it. Committee members – our self-images, identities and inner voices were formed as we internalized the experiences and input we received in our infancy and toddlerhood. Committee members have coping strategies, beliefs, stories and judgments about who we are. While vital in our early development, many of these parts are misinformed, carrying stories and beliefs that are not true and do not serve us.
One Committee member is the Judge. In a courtroom the
Judge's job is to create an impartial space so that justice can be served. The Judge respects and empowers the jury's decision and metes out justice accordingly. The premise of the courtroom is innocence until proven guilty.
When it comes to our Inner Life, most of us start out with a guilty verdict. We filter our experience through unconscious limiting beliefs, outdated defense strategies and misinformed ideas of who we think we are or are supposed to be. We presume ourselves guilty with no chance of innocence! The Committee, our inner jury, presents evidence through these filters. The inner Judge takes this evidence and levies yet one more self-deprecating or distorted sentence upon us. The inner Judge is not fair or just. Condemning us to a hellish inner life, it shuts down our true, natural self-expression. This impacts our lives and can have fatal consequences: suicide, addiction, living a life of quiet desperation.
Pay attention to your thinking. Signs the judge is around include: Negative self-talk "I'm stupid, I'm so. . . , I never or always. . ." Specific words "should, could, would, better, more" "I should be thinner, more active, I better do this or else, I should have or be more. . . etc." Comparing to a standard, expectation or someone else: "I'm not as competent as he is. . . She's so lucky she gets the good assignments. . ." Reduced mental clarity- confusion, swirling thoughts, obsessing, lack of clarity Pay attention to your body and energy. These cues can indicate that the Judge is lurking: Feeling deflated Contraction around the head, heart or belly center Panic attacks Decreased energy- dragging Pay attention to your emotional state: Overwhelm, anxiety Hopelessness, depression continued on page 12 . . .

It is important to understand
what causes people with dementia to be anxious. They are afraid of anything new or unexpected; frustrated when they are not understood; frustrated and perhaps ashamed trying something that is too difficult and failing or being scolded or rushed by a tired, irritated care partner! They may simply need things slowed down or need reassurance that they are valued and safe.

Swimsuit Tone Up
by Katrina Hodgson
It's crunch time! Bathing suit time is here.
If the thought of slipping into your bikini and going out in public is a scary one, you may be in need of our Spring Into Swimsuit Shape Workout. Warm up to this 5-exercise plan and in just a few short weeks you'll be strutting your stuff with less stress.
How to tone up for a swimsuit Reduce fat • Creating
a healthy deficit in your calories by taking in fewer calories per day than what you expend. • Exercise and sweat! • Tone! Use strength training to build the smooth, long muscles that give you a nice shape! This circuit burns the most amount of calories while targeting your full body by mixing cardio with strength training exercises! If you do not have a jump rope you can do the motion. If you cannot jump for fitness limitations I suggest stepping side to side for the given time.
Jump Rope (30 seconds)
Lunge to Bicep Curl to Shoulder press
What It Does: This is a thigh, butt AND arm blaster! How Many to Do: 10-12 reps for each leg How to Do It: Keep your knee in line with your ankle and behind your toe while engaging your core, then tuck your belly button into your spine.
Tricep Extensions in Stork Stance
What It Does: This lifts your butt by targeting the back of your leg; it also tones those triceps! How Many to Do: 24 reps (12 balancing on each leg) How to Do It: Stand on one leg with a soft knee, squeeze your core, keep your elbows tucked into your sides and kick back the dumbbell slowly and controlled without swinging.
Jump Rope (1 minute) Physio Ball Push Up and Tuck What It Does: This great move will not only sculpt your entire ab area for
your swimsuit, but also targets your chest and arms! How Many to Do: 12 push-ups and tucks How to Do It: Make sure your hands are in line with your shoulders, your core is engaged and your shins and feet are balancing on the ball. Slowly tuck your body in using your abdominal muscles and alternate with a push-up. You can go down as far as you are comfortable.
Leg Lifts with Physio Ball
What It Does: This tones your stubborn inner thighs and flattens both your lower and upper stomach. How Many to Do: 12 crunches How to Do It: Press your lower back into the floor. While squeezing the ball with your inner thighs crunch both sides of your body.
V-Sit with Overhead Tricep Extension
What It Does: Wave goodbye to the fat underneath your arm! How Many to Do: 15 reps How to Do It: You can have your heels lifted or in the air. Squeeze your continued on page 15 . . .

Frog Kicks with Leg Kickbacks
What It Does: Another great exercise that works your entire core, including your lower back, abs and your beach bum! How Many to Do: 12 each side How to Do It: With your hands in line with your shoulders, bring one knee to your elbow while squeezing your abdominal and oblique muscles. Slowly
kick your leg back by tightening your glute muscles (glutes is a fancy word for your butt). REPEAT ONE MORE TIME! Have fun! You'll feel it but it'll be so worth it when you slip into your swimsuit. Say NO to Drugs. by Shawn Messonnier DVM
aspects of a holistic health care plan for your pets is saying NO to drugs whenever possible, and finding alternatives to traditional medications. Drugs certainly have their place in the treatment of many diseases, and we shouldn’t totally abandon their use. In my opinion, they work best for acute problems (such as serious infections and the occasional flare-ups of chronic problems like allergies and arthritis.) More chronic problems (and often minor acute problems) respond best to alternative therapies like herbs, homeopathics, magnetic therapy, chiropractic, and acupuncture. Chronic use of conventional drugs is often more expensive than alternative treatments, and side effects are much more commonly encountered
when using conventional medications than when alternative therapies are used. Additionally, many pets treated with chronic drug therapy develop side effects from these drugs, or even another disease from the drug therapy! This means that even more drugs are used to treat these secondary disorders, leading to further increases in side effects or second or third diseases. Finding natural, alternative therapies is a safer, healthier approach for treating the pet with chronic problems. When drugs need to be used in treating diseases in pets, especially chronic diseases, the LOWEST dose of the drug that provides relief should be used for the SHORTEST amount of time. This approach minimizes side effects, and also gives the pet the “correct” amount of drug it needs at that time. Gymnastics
by JJ McPherson
A spring board for sports!
When adults and teens exercise
or train for sports you can usually hear grunting, whistles blowing, weights pounding, coaches screaming, and heavy breathing. The sounds I hear when teaching children gymnastics however, are the sounds of laughter, squeals of excitement, music, and words of positive encouragement. The sounds from the two groups may be different; however, the end goal for both groups is to get exercise, improve performance in sports, and have the best quality of everyday life. Gymnastics is a perfect spring board and a great environment to start helping your child develop beneficial life and sports skills. Balance and strength are key aspects in every sport. Whether your child is on the soccer field attempting to score a goal or on the baseball diamond trying to hit a home run; balance and strength will impact their overall performance. These important physical attributes are key aspects to gymnastics training. As early as a child can crawl or walk they can get a head start by participating in a fun and imaginative gymnastics program.
Balance
Conventional gymnastics skills require balance. Walking on a balance beam or performing a scale (standing on one leg and holding the other in the air parallel to the floor), will help a child discover the concept of balance and hone in on their ability to fight gravity. A progression of skills achieving optimal balance is illustrated below. Picture 1 shows a two year old trying to balance on one leg while trying to straighten their back leg in the air. Picture 2 shows a five year old performing a scale while balancing on a floor beam. Picture 3 shows a twelve year old leaping to a scale on a high beam. This photographic progression shows that a child can develop the important skill of balance through gymnastics. Helping a child

2 3 to discover his or her ability to balance at an early age will provide a lifelong skill that will help them every day in the adventure of life.
Strength
Strength is an integral part of many gymnastics movements and skills. Gymnastics uses bodyweight movements and exercises to strengthen athletes. For example the pull-up, push-up, tricep dip, and the handstand are a few exercises that can dramatically improve strength.

The handstand takes a lot of upper body strength to support body weight, and leg muscles to kick up to the classic inverted position. While not many two year olds can kick up and hold a perfect handstand, the movement can be tailored to their age and skill level and progress as strength and coordination increases. A progression of skills depicting increasing strength is shown below. Picture 1 shows a two year old doing a donkey kick; building upper body strength by supporting body weight and building strength by jumping their feet in the air. Picture 2 shows a five year old doing a horsey kick, which is very similar to a donkey kick, however the child is kicking their feet in the air higher while supporting their body weight for a longer period of time. Picture 3 shows a ten year old holding a handstand, which takes an immense amount of upper body strength to hold the inverted positions while using leg muscles to kick up and squeeze together, to achieve the best possible form. Practicing these movements at a young age will dramatically increase a child’s strength and equip them with muscle strength that will prepare them for any future sport. This article touches on the benefits of balance and strength development in gymnastics with relation to sports. Developing and improving a child’s strength and balance in a fun and exciting atmosphere can increase confidence and lead a child to try new sports and activities, along with helping each child to excel in current activities and sports. JJ McPherson is a 3rd generation gymnastics coach. He is a graduate of Northeastern University, Cross Fit Level 1 and Cross Fit Kids certified. He currently teaches all ages Tumblefun Gymnastics in Marshfield. Check out his fun and fitness based gymnastics programs on the web tumblefungymnastics.com.

Shop the perimeter of your grocery store where all the fresh,
healthy food is located, like fruits, vegetables, seafood, and meats. The packaged, processed, and frozen foods that often contain trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and other unhealthy additives are typically found in the center of the store. This could also be a money-saving strategy, since fresh foods typically cost less than processed foods. It’s better for the environment because all that excessive packaging ends up in landfills. You are reducing waste as you’re reducing your waist! Don’t forget to bring reusable

substitutes like legumes, nuts, seeds (which contain antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, Vitamin E, and far less saturated fat, antibiotics, hormones.) This is good for you, animal livestock, and the planet. Plant-based food has far less environmental impact than animal-based food. Getting your protein from sources other than beef is a pretty brilliant idea. The EPA estimates that nearly 75 percent of the water pollution in the United States is a direct result of industrial beef production and processing. The problems associated with global warming and climate change are also increased due to beef production and consumption. From a health standpoint, there are many reasons to limit your beef consumption. Beef is a leading source of dietary saturated fat, which can significantly increase the risk of heart disease, the number one killer of men and women today. Beef consumption also creates a significant number of public health hazards because animal feed in industrial meat plants may contain arsenic, animal by-products, and antibiotics.

Kale
The Super Food
by Carly Johann, and Sheena Benton
Sauteed Kale Saute kale in olive oil with chopped fresh garlic and salt and pepper to taste. Serve with small pieces of whole grain artisan bread for a simple, healthy appetizer or side dish. Kale is a bonafide superfood. One cup of kale has only 36 calories and zero grams of fat, which makes it a great diet aid. Furthermore, one cup contains nearly 20% of the RDA of dietary fiber, which promotes regular digestion, prevents constipation, lowers blood sugar and curbs overeating. Kale is also superstar in the arena of carotenoids and flavonoids, two powerful antioxidants that protect our cells
from free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Key for athletes, one cup of kale also provides about 10% of the RDA of omega-3 fatty acids that helps regulate the body’s inflammatory process. A megadose of vitamin K further aids to fight against excessive inflammatory-related problems, such as arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and asthma. Try to add a handful of raisins for sweet surprises and it’s a good source of iron or add a sprinkle of crushed hazelnuts for some good fats. Carly C. Johann. I recommend drinking 6-to-8 cups a day of the following tea to help "crowdout" less healthy beverages, maintain a state of fullness, reduce your appetite, and cleanse your liver and kidneys. In a quart of water, combine 2 tablespoons of each of the following and gently simmer the tea: burdock root, yellow dock root, dandelion leaf and root, licorice root, fennel, and ginger. Drink it throughout the day.
Detox Your Dinner. For seven nights, prepare a simple meal of liver detoxifying steamed vegetables like carrots, broccoli, artichokes, beets, and onions, along with a 4-ounce portion of protein simply prepared with a little bit of olive oil. Consider wild fish, organic lean meats, or lentils for your protein sources.

The lemon stimulates your digestion and the cayenne enhances circulation and blood flow. Contrast Shower. Try your own at-home version of an old naturopathic hydrotherapy cure. Each time you take a hot shower, follow it by a cold rinse (60 seconds). The "contrast" stimulates circulation, your immune system, and your ability to detox via your skin. Your pores will tighten and you will feel invigorated and ready for the day. Fever Baths. Take a warm bath in the evening and add one cup of Epsom salts to soothe, relax, and detox. Many of us unknowingly consume foods that we have allergic reactions to or that increase toxins in our bodies, causing symptoms like arthritis, headaches, water retention, and fatigue. The most common culprits are gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, and sugar. I suggest taking a break from all of these foods, or picking one that is predominant in your diet and taking a break from it. Often, if we simply eliminate foods that contain gluten (wheat, oats, rye, barley, spelt) and replace them with brown rice, millet, or quinoa products, we can change our eating habits and actually increase the variety of foods we eat.

The Power of by Marc Lesser
Sabbath
When my two children were in elementary school, a weekly day of doing less was an important part of our family ritual. We borrowed some ideas from the Jewish Sabbath as well as Buddhist Day of Mindfulness practices. At the heart of our day we had three simple rules that we applied from sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday evening: Rule #1: There was no spending money. Rule #2: There was no watching television. Rule #3: We did something together as a family. These three guidelines produced significant results in the quality of those twenty-four hours. What a relief to not buy anything, not have the television on, and spend time simply enjoying each other’s presence. My wife and I talked more with our two children; we read books, told stories, played games, went for walks, and shared meals. The biggest benefit of this structured break was that,

the four of us to stand on our deck together, seeing who could find the three stars as the sun faded and nighttime slowly emerged. Of course, since we live in Marin County, dense fog sometimes forced us to use our imaginations. Instituting rest and simplicity is not a magic wand for perfection. There were occasional disagreements, grumpiness, and boredom. But our imperfections often emerge as the most endearing parts of ourselves, and those“Sabbath” days stand out as important building blocks, and are great memories, for our still growing family. You don’t need to have children to create a regular Sabbath or retreat in your life. In fact, you can do this if you live by yourself, with others, or a family of any size.
for a day, the pace of our lives slowed down and our family connections increased. One of my favorite parts of this ritual was the formal ending. We observed the Jewish tradition of looking for the first three stars to become visible on Saturday evening, signaling that Sabbath was over. It was fun and exciting for

Sleepless nights stalk the body in
many ways for many reasons. Primary issues are stress, hormonal imbalances, and depression. Not getting enough sleep affects the brain, the body, and emotional well being. It’s serious when it is on-going. Sleep apnea, the absence of breathing several times a night, is a disorder that affects a good night’s sleep, which will not be addressed here. Go see a good sleep doc. Make sure you are getting enough Calcium, especially Calcium Lactate or Chelate, 1,000 to 2,000 mg daily, along with 1,000 mg of Magnesium. If you fall asleep then wake later in the night, often the lack of Calcium contributes to this sleep pattern. Get enough exercise during the day. Even a short walk can make a sleep difference. Do a few Yoga Poses in the evening. Eat foods high in tryptophan at dinner, of afterward: turkey, figs, dates, yogurt, tuna, bananas, grapefruit.
Avoid caffeine, especially after 12:00 noon. Avoid or reduce high protein meals in the evening. This includes beans and tofu. They block serotonin production. Avoid or reduce alcohol. It is not a sedative, despite what you think. The body converts it to a chemical, acetaldehyde, which is a stimulant. This wakens you in the early hours. And it builds up more in men than women. Try to eat earlier which helps the digestive process. Avoid or reduce the following foods in the evenings: sugar, cheese, chocolate, sauerkraut, wine, bacon, ham, sausage, potatoes, spinach, and tomatoes. They contain tyramine, which increases the release of norepinephrine, a brain stimulant. Helpful herbs to take as a tea or extract before bed: valerian root, skullcap, catnip, hops, lady slipper, passionflower, and chamomile.
There are several good homeopathics, one is simply called, ‘insomnia.’ If you can have a sample of your hair analyzed for copper or iron deficiency, many doctors believe this deficiency contributes to insomnia, especially in women.
Ayurvedic Notes on Insomnia Insomnia is a disorder created by an imbalance of vata in the nervous system. Drink warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg, or cardamom. or add crushed almonds. Nutmeg helps with calming sleep. Ingest it, or make a paste of nutmeg and ghee to rub on forehead and around the eyes before bed. Drink a cup of tomato juice in early evening, possibly with a pinch of nutmeg, and or with natural sugar. Cherries are helpful for stress, fresh or frozen. Four dates before bed helps calm the nerves. Don’t eat a late dinner or exercise late in the afternoon. Warm oil self massage, especially on scalp and soles of feet. Hot bath with lovely scents and candlelight.
Meditation. Add the pranayama/breath sounds of “so hum.” Inhale think “So” then exhale to “Hum.” Stay focused on third eye, the space between your eyebrows. Build the habit of not allowing worries from the day to enter this time-space. Declare it ‘off limits’ to anything but blissful peace.
Poses Make sure to get enough exercise in the day! Before bed, do series of forward folds while lengthening the breath, especially the exhale, to

Keep Your Cholesterol in Check
by Phil Lempert
Cholesterol is one of those, gotta have it, but don’t want to have too much, or the wrong kind, of nutrients. Cholesterol is absolutely necessary for the formation of certain hormones and essential for other basic cell functions. It is estimated that American’s daily dietary cholesterol intake is about 300-500 mg, and the oxidized version (will touch on this later) could account for up to 10 percent of this. American Heart Association recommends no more than 300mg cholesterol from dietary sources, and also reminds us that the body, particularly the liver, produces its own cholesterol.
Cholesterol from eggs, pasture raised, grass fed meats, and dairy foods, when consumed with a whole foods based diet, in moderation is not harmful. The oxidized or overcooked, CAFO sourced meat and other products are where we can run into trouble. A study from the Chinese University in Hong Kong isolated oxidized cholesterol in foods and found that it both increases total cholesterol levels and promotes atherosclerosis; the hardening of the arteries. Oxycholesterol, or oxidized cholesterol, is generally formed when foods of animal origin (most contain transfats) are heated and cooked at very high temperatures. When heated, cholesterol is oxidized (forming free radicals!) forming the new, dangerous union of oxygen and cholesterol. It is a well-known fact that high cholesterol levels pose a major health risk; The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 20 percent of all strokes and over 50 percent of all heart attacks can be linked to high cholesterol.
24 Healthy Living Magazine
There has been little research comparing oxidized cholesterol with non-oxidized cholesterol (LDLs and HDLs). The Chinese study involved feeding hamsters either a diet high in oxycholesterol or non-oxidized cholesterol; those in the former displayed total blood cholesterol increases of up to 22 percent versus the non-oxidized eaters. As well as a significant increase in blood cholesterol – or because of it – the oxy-eaters also demonstrated a greater deposition of cholesterol in the lining of their arteries. For those watching their cholesterol, choosing meals can be a challenge. Here are some tips to keep you on track and your cholesterol levels health.
Avoid trans-fat. Stay away from items that list “partially hydrogenated oil” on the label. Reading all food labels is essential, even if the nutrition facts states 0 trans fats. Use fresh garlic when cooking.
Garlic has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels.
Brew some green tea. The
antioxidants in green tea help lower cholesterol and prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
Spring 2012
Stock up on soluble fiber.
Fiber, specifically soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol by binding with it in the digestive tract and helping it pass through the body. Choose beans and lentils, apples, oats, barley, carrots and freshly ground flaxseed.
Snack on almonds. Studies have demonstrated almonds ability to lower LDL cholesterol as well as blood sugar levels – yes a 1-2 punch. Learning to Receive Getting A Massage
by Robert Lawrence Friedman
When was the last time you
received a massage from your loved one, or from a professional? I am a great believer in the importance of finding a way, as stress levels increase, to take a break from the routines and stressors of daily life. Massages are a wonderful way to do this. There are many types of massages available. I will discuss just a few of them here. Swedish Massage is a system of therapeutic massage which relaxes muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones. Swedish massage therapists will rub your muscles in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage includes kneading, tapping, friction, vibration, effleurage and shaking motions.
Aromatherapy Massage uses
essential oils distilled from botanical sources to balance the nervous system and cleanse the body. The massage therapist uses flowing strokes on the body as essential oils are applied. Depending on the type of essential oil used, aromatherapy can be a powerful way to relax, but also can be stimulating as well.
applying pressure to various meridians in the body.
Aromatherapy Massage
Ayurvedic Botanical Massage is a type of massage
which promotes relaxation through applying a warm herbal solution to the body while the face is gently cleansed with herbs and massaged with essential oils from India.
Shirodhara is a fascinating massage which originated in India and one which I personally experienced. It involves a warm herbal oil which drips slowly on the area just below Deep Tissue Massage is a type of massage that focuses on the body’s deeper muscles and connective tissues. The therapist applies deepkneading movements to realign muscles. This is also known as Rolfing, Feldenkrais, Trager and Hellerwork
Deep Tissue Massage
Shiatsu Massage utilizes
the theory of acupuncture and acupressure with the goal of balancing the energies of the body. The theory of Shiatsu massage is that your body will work best when it is balanced. One of the goals of Shiatsu massage is to find those areas where the energy of the body is blocked and open it through
the scalp. This is an unusual type of massage in that there is no physical touching from the massage therapist at all.
Reflexology is a massage that focuses primarily on the foot. It is based on the theory that the foot is a map of the entire body and by applying pressure to specific points of the sole; the referred body part will feel beneficial effects. Robert Lawrence Friedman is the author of the book “How to Relax in 60Seconds or Less” and “The Healing Power of the Drum – A Psychotherapist Explores the Healing Power of Rhythm,” which investigates the use of rhythm as a stress reliever.
