Why?

Why do I eat?

Where?

by Dr. Michelle May

When?

Where does my energy go?

Make eating a multi-sensory experience. Look at your food and appreciate the colors, textures and arrangement. Decide which food looks the most appetizing and start by eating one or two bites of it while your taste buds are the most sensitive. If you save the best until last, you may want to eat it even if you’re full.

When do I want to eat?

EATING CYCLE How Much?

Take small bites since large bites are wasted on the roof of your mouth, teeth and cheeks where you have very few taste buds. In addition, much of what you perceive as taste actually comes from smell. When you slowly chew a small bite of food, the aromas are carried from the back of your throat to your nose, enhancing the flavors. Put your fork down after each bite. When you are loading your next forkful, you cannot pay attention to the one in your mouth. When you are always paying attention to the next bite you will keep eating until there are no more bites left. Recognize Fullness Pause in the middle of eating. When you get to your speed bump, stop eating for a couple of minutes. Estimate how much more food it will take to fill you to comfortable satiety, keeping in mind that there is a delay in the fullness signal reaching the brain.

How much do I eat?

How?

How do I eat?

Complete the Mindful Eating Process When you’re finished eating, notice how you feel. If you over-ate, do not judge or punish yourself. Instead, be aware of the physical and/ or emotional discomfort caused by being overly full and create a plan to decrease the likelihood that you will overeat next time. Once you experience the pleasure of eating mindfully, you may be motivated to become more mindful during other activities too. Use intention and attention in your personal relationships and during routine activities like showering or exercising. Living fully in each moment increases your enjoyment and effectiveness in everything you do.

Notice when your taste buds become less sensitive to the taste of food; that is a sign that your body has had enough. Push your plate forward or get up from the table. The desire to continue eating will pass quickly, so distract yourself for a few minutes if necessary. Keep in mind that your intention was to feel better when you were done and that you will eat again when you are hungry. Online Issue July/August 2012

DIET FORM

for

CHRONICALLY ILL PATIENTS by Paul Gerst

The body that has been out of balance for at least 3 months, with an autoimmune disorder, chronic degenerative disease, diabetes, asthma/allergies, sinusitis, and the list goes on and on, will need to be detoxified/ cleansed, “re-educated,” and then supplied with the proper nutrients/energy/environment to re-build or heal itself. The purpose of this form is to provide you with the basic foundation of your diet . . . in other words, here is what you CAN eat (there are always a few exceptions in the crowd)! First, while you are in a healing phase, you should avoid coffee, caffeinated beverages, alcohol, sodas, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, dairy, and artificial ingredients. Yes, this pretty much means EVERYTHING you have been consuming! Instead of focusing on what you CANNOT eat, try concentrating on what is going to lead you back to a state of health and wellness. Drink water from a good, clean source. Avoid chlorinated (most city water) water . . . filtered, spring or well water is ok. Vegetables: focus on veggies that are inseason… cabbage, carrot, artichoke, leeks, potatoes, pumpkin, squash (winter), and yams/ sweet potatoes in the Fall and Winter (adding more warming spices as the weather cools, such as ginger, garlic, and onions), beets, beet greens, broccoli, all greens and sprouts in the Spring, and beets, cucumber, beans, radish, broccoli, cauliflower, and summer squash in the Summer. Protein Good, clean sources of poultry (chicken & turkey), fish (oily fish is better, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines), and in the Fall/Winter, venison, elk, and other wild game is ok in moderation. For those without sensitivities/ allergies to eggs, free-range eggs that are free of antibiotics are a great way to start the day, 3-4 days per week. Some of you will have problems digesting protein, so an acceptable alternative will be suggested, such as a protein powder from a hypo-allergenic source such as vegetables, or a protein supplement like spirulina may be recommended. It is crucial to prepare all your foods properly, but especially continued on page 8 . . .

The 28-Day Engine 2 Challenge by Karen Webb

Lying in a private room at Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center this past December, I made a couple of decisions. First, that I needed a better way to control the challenges I face with Crohn’s disease and food allergies, and second, that I had to get my health under better control. With a restricted diet post hospital stay and doctor’s orders to take time away from the gym and rest for a month, I couldn’t start in earnest until the New Year, but what better way to start 2012 than with a commitment and promise to myself that I’d focus on my health? Most of the programs available were focused on weight loss. Sure, I needed to lose a few pounds (well, maybe more than a few) but that wasn’t my primary focus. I didn’t want to enlist in a program that had me counting points or a program that suggested food I couldn’t tolerate (lactose, soy, gluten, for example.) I was hoping to find a program that had more of a lifestyle shift focus versus a short-term weight loss focus. I found it in the 28-Day Engine 2 Challenge. Although it starts as a 28-day challenge, Engine 2 is really a plan of action and the stepping stone for making concrete healthy changes which can reduce cholesterol, reduce the risk for disease, control glucose levels, help maintain normal weight, increase overall energy and overall well being. Some believe it can reverse heart disease, but it was important for me to prevent or stop it in its tracks, and it was important for me to keep the Crohn’s in check. Online Issue July/August 2012

Individuals following the Engine 2 plan adopt a whole food, nutrient-dense way of eating based on plants including a large variety of vegetables, whole grains, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds. Participants are offered two options for participation: Fire Cadet (phasing out groups of food over the 28-day period) and Firefighter (jumping right into a 100% plantbased diet.) For me, I felt phasing out foods was the right option versus going immediately cold turkey (pun intended.) Enter Whole Foods Market in Bellingham, MA, whose corporate mantra is to promote the health of their customers through healthy eating education. In January, Whole Foods Market (WFM) posted on their Facebook page that they were sponsoring the Engine 2 Diet Challenge. Not only would I be able to start the challenge, but with WFM, I’d be joining a group of others in similar mind and would benefit from the knowledge and expertise of WFM’s Healthy Eating Specialists. It was a very wise decision. The program included a free membership to Team Fitness Franklin, a personal training session, and weekly supper clubs where WFM’s Healthy Eating Specialists, Karen Ring and Theresa Michaelson, introduced us to nutrient-dense foods and discussed substitutes to food we had been relying on but which needed to be eliminated on the Engine 2 Diet. They also introduced us to WFM’s Health Starts Here program which focuses on food in its purest

state — unadulterated by artificial additives, sweeteners, colorings, and preservatives — the best tasting and most nutritious food available and the basis for a plant-strong, whole foods diet. The meetings were chock full of knowledge, but Karen and Theresa made it extremely entertaining with trivia contests, prizes, a weekly mystery food challenge, and encouraging participants to share their experiences, recipes, and success stories. The first week, I eliminated all dairy, refined sugar and processed foods, focused on incorporating more whole foods into my diet, and consciously reduced the amount of animalbased products I was consuming. For the most part, this was surprisingly easy to do. I made mostly vegetarian food the first week and substituted lower fat foods for higher fat foods when possible, making turkey/quinoa meatballs with spaghetti and red sauce for example. The hardest part of this was not being able to have cereal with Lactose-free milk and not being able to cook with or eat butter. However, there were easy substitutions. I was able to substitute WFM’s 365 brand unsweetened almond milk with my cereal and ate more whole grain breakfast foods such as a half whole grain bagel or Health Starts Here sprouted breads with almond butter, or Irish whole grain steel cut oatmeal with honey and strawberries. That first week, I was able to go back to the gym, working out on the treadmill, elliptical machine, and universal weights. Although I was eating healthier and felt as though I was full at every meal, I did feel hungry and needed to add a late afternoon snack (nuts or fruit) every day. Living with Crohn’s, I’ve become aware of my trigger foods – the foods that could cause or lead me into a flare up – and the first week of Engine 2 eliminated one major trigger for me: lactose. Week one also brought another surprising benefit – a four pound weight loss I didn’t expect. Week two, I eliminated all meats, chicken, eggs, and fish, and continued on without dairy, refined sugar and processed foods. Although removing eggs from the foods I would have a few times a week for breakfast was hard at first, within a few days I had established Online Issue July/August 2012

a routine of having either whole grains, fruit, steel cut oatmeal or a whole grain bagel with almond butter and didn’t miss them. During the second week, I wasn’t getting as hungry in between meals. I was eating so many healthy vegetables and whole grains, removing meat wasn’t a challenge; however, removing fish proved to be difficult. Although I didn’t cheat, I craved cod and sea bass. Although I might have been tempted, feeling better and seeing another pound weight loss was the motivation I needed to stay on the path. In week three, you eliminate extracted oils in addition to dairy and meat. For me, this one was hard. Although I didn’t normally cook with a lot of butter, I frequently used extra virgin olive oil and canola oil in my cooking. For the first few days, I either didn’t use the oil or used a very scant amount. Although the texture of vegetables and other foods cooked in wine or broth is different, for the most part, it was easy to get used to. By the end of week three, I had dropped 7 pounds, and I learned to cook with Adzuki beans, blood oranges, and bok choy, each mystery foods which were introduced in our WFM’s meetings. Week four was a week of revelations. I had successfully eliminated diary. I had successfully eliminated processed foods. I had successfully eliminated meat, and I had successfully eliminated processed oils. I had dropped my cholesterol level by 20 points, and lost a total of 8 1/2 pounds over the 28-day challenge. More important, I developed a stronger awareness of what healthy eating means and how I can incorporate more healthy choices into my and my family’s diet. Moving forward, I’m relying on the Engine 2 book and WFM’s Health Starts Here website to guide the way. Beginning total cholesterol: 196 (LDL 126, HDL 52, Triglycerides 87) Ending total cholesterol: 178 (LDL 113, HDL 49, Triglycerides 82) 28-day weight loss: 8.5 lbs

Foods and Anti-Aging.

Food supplements are all the rage these days when it comes to combating the aging process, but it may be the steady consumption of vitamin and mineral-rich foods that best gives us our robust health

or a few as with many supplements. Foods contain a multitude of antioxidant variants, and precisely how these are assimilated is still in the theoretical stages of understanding.

and protects us from age-related diseases. Admittedly, this sounds a bit like grandmother speaking, but there’s science to back it up.

Antioxidants come in so many foods, but a few of the more popular ones are recommended here by Donald Hensrud

It is thought by many that antioxidants play an important role in fighting aging because of their interaction with free radicals, which can damage tissues. How this happens is not entirely understood, so, consequently, some methods to utilize antioxidants through food intake or supplementation have emerged.

Berries — Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and cranberries are among the top sources of antioxidants.

Donald Hensrud of the Mayo Clinic suggests that adding a variety of antioxidant-rich foods to the diet may be the best approach to combat aging, since each food contains a wide array of antioxidant compounds, not just one Online Issue July/August 2012

Beans — Small red beans and kidney, pinto and black beans are all choices rich in antioxidants. Fruits — Many apple varieties (with peel) are high in antioxidants, as are avocados, cherries, continued on page 14 . . .

green and red pears, fresh or dried plums, pineapple, kiwi and others. Vegetables — Those with the highest antioxidant content include artichokes, spinach, red cabbage, red and white potatoes (with peel), sweet potatoes and broccoli. Although the effect of cooking on antioxidant levels varies by cooking method and vegetable, one study showed that cooking generally increased levels among select vegetables. Beverages — Green tea may come to mind as a good source of antioxidants, but other beverages have high levels, too, including coffee, red wine and many fruit juices such as pomegranate. Nuts — Walnuts, pistachios, pecans, hazelnuts and almonds are some of the top nuts for antioxidant content. Herbs — These may be unexpected suppliers of antioxidants, but ground cloves, cinnamon

and ginger, dried oregano leaf and turmeric powder are all good sources. Grains — In general, oat-based products are higher in antioxidants than are those derived from other grain sources. And for dessert — Don’t forget that a piece of dark chocolate ranks as high or higher than most fruits and vegetables in terms of antioxidant content. As scientific understanding continues to develop in this field, we will likely continue to see more targeted means to combat specific age-related conditions, either with particular foods, or supplements, or drug therapies. For the time being, it may make sense to eat a diet containing a wide array of antioxidantrich foods, with a heavy accent on fruits and vegetables. The body continues to require oxygen at a level that exceeds oxygen requirements when the exercise began in order to reoxygenate the blood, restore the body's pre workout temperature, heart rate , and breathing. Therefore, it's work to restore the body to it's pre-exercise state; making you a fat burning machine!! Below are three High Intensity Interval Training (HITT) workouts for you to try. We suggest you do at least 30 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training, 3 days per week to get your bikini body ready for Summer! Workout #1: HIIT Treadmill Workout: Intervals with an incline. Warm-up: 5 minute walk or jog at a comfortable pace. Online Issue July/August 2012

Find a Challenging Treadmill Setting: Find a treadmill setting that you can sustain for no more than one minute. Set your incline and speed to a slightly higher than what you are comfortable with. Learn what your one-minute limit is. After one minute, you should feel like you just sprinted away from a cheetah ;). 1 Minute Work & 2 Minutes Recovery: Next, after going all-out for one minute (the work interval),ÿslow down for two minutes (the recovery interval). Everyone's recovery interval will vary depending on your fitness level. Easy? Maybe a 2.5 mph walk at zero incline, or a 3.5 mph jog. After two minutes in recovery, you should feel ready to go full force again. Your heart rate will stay elevated through the entire High Intensity Interval Training Workout. **To determine if you are pushing yourself hard enough, use the Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale; An RPE of 1 means very easy. A 9 to 10 means you're so out of breath you cannot speak. If you have been working out alot and have a higher fitness level, aim for a 9-10 during the work intervals. If you are still building up your fitness level, aim for 6-7. Do 5-8 Intervals followeed by a 10 minute cool down.

Workout #2: HIIT Track Workout Warm-up: 5 minutes brisk walk or jog. 30 Seconds Work- 2 Minute Recovery: Give your maximum effort to sprint for 30 seconds on the track, slow down to a light jog or walk, depending on your fitness level, for 2 minutes. The idea is that you are going so hard during the work interval that you will need to walk during the recovery period. Do 6-10 Intervals followed by a 10 minute cool down. Workout #3: HIIT Endurance Bike Ride Tone It Up loves HIIT endurance bike rides to improve performance during a triathlon. This is a great workout so you can save time on long distance rides by incorporating interval training. Follow this High Intensity Interval Training Workout that can be done outdoors or on a spin bike at the gym! Remember: Always vary your speeds for each ride. A little variety leads to improvement on your times!

Empowering Women

and

Eliminating Racism by Kimberly Nashawaty

I have made so many great connections. I cannot imagine my life now without my “YW’ friends. With them I have been able to handle a third child, close family members passing, the purchase of a new home, HS graduation and the start of college. The support system at the YW is better than any

I started taking classes at the Marshfield Branch YWCA seventeen years ago. At that time I was looking for an hour or two of guilt free hours away from my children. As a stay at home mom with two kids sometimes I felt overwhelmed. I just needed to talk to other adults and feel useful in ways other than breast feeding and making baby food. The YWCA provided me with a place that has amazing and affordable child care services and classes. I made blueberry jam in my first class. That was great fun! After that I learned how to make flavored oils and vinegars, baklava, baskets and candles. From there I moved to knitting sweaters and quilting. I have had many opportunities to volunteer my time also. I have taught cross stitching and various sewing classes.

and outings. His daughter, Gertrude Tanner, once President of the Cambridge YWCA, often brought city teens and families to Marshfield to the Red Barn. She was responsible for this property being deeded to the Cambridge YWCA by her mother, Ann Thurber, in 1961. In 1968, the Cambridge Executive Director contacted Dottie Carpenter of Marshfield to see if there would be any women interested in year-round programming. She found ten others and they began meeting as a discussion group once a week in November, 1968. Since then, we've grown to our present programming consisting of Tai chi, yoga, Zumba, beginner sewing, experienced quilting, knitting, Homeopathic classes such as: Reiki, Natural first aid, living intuitively. We also have cooking classes such as: marzipan candies, baklava, how to make soup. Use your crock-pot properly. With payment plans and affordable babysitting anyone can take classes here. 17 years later I can proudly say as an employee of the Marshfield Branch of the YWCA Cambridge we empower many women and eliminate racism through programs such as No Place for Hate and Stand against Racism. The YWCA continues to strive to be a great asset to the community. Kimberly Nashawaty, Branch Director

8 Reasons Your Kid Should Get Acupuncture by Marcie Griffith, Lic.Ac., MAOM, Dipl. OM

Acupuncture can be a wonderful therapy for kids. Many people often ask what the youngest age is that I can treat. And the answer is, we can tailor treatment according to the child's age, stage of development, and comfort with treatment. I have been fortunate enough to treat newborns in the neonatal ICU, as well as toddlers, preschoolers, elementary-aged kids, preteens, and teens here in my clinic as well as a variety of hospital and public health settings. For babies and young children, I don't usually use needles, but rather non-insertive acupuncture techniques, acupressure, and magnet therapies. Usually by age 6 or 7, kids tolerate the acupuncture needles really well, and we work together to find the most appropriate form of treatment for them. I think acupuncture is great for kids on so many levels. Perhaps the most obvious reason is that acupuncture can be a really effective treatment for lots of common childhood medical issues. Additionally, however, I think it is so valuable to expose kids to acupuncture for a variety of different reasons. Here are my top 8: 8. Treats allergies and asthma.According to the CDC, almost 10% of children in the US have asthma. Many more kids suffer from chronic sinusitis or seasonal allergies. Rather than loading kids up with strong medications, acupuncture can help the Online Issue July/August 2012

body balance itself naturally and moderate or clear symptoms all together with a lasting effect. In children with severe asthma when medication is clearly necessary, acupuncture can be used as an effective adjunctive treatment to keep the dosage of the medication as low as possible. 7. Boosts immunity. This really goes handin-hand with the previous point. A number of small pilot clinical trials have had promising results regarding acupuncture’s ability to modulate the immune response, particularly in children with asthma. Additionally, acupuncture can be used to effectively boost immunity to prevent colds, flus, and other common childhood illnesses. 6. Promotes healthy digestive function. It always amazes me how many of the pediatric patients I see in clinic have problems with their digestive function – whether this means constipation or irregular bowel movements, stomach cramping, gas, or food allergies. Acupuncture can be a very useful tool for helping the digestive system regulate itself better, to minimize symptoms and also to increase the body’s ability to effectively absorb nutrients. 5. Stops pain. One of the most common reasons that adults in this country seek out acupuncture is for pain management. The good news is, acupuncture can be a very effective treatment for decreasing pain in children, as well. This

makes it an ideal therapy for acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain or injuries, as well as pain from conditions like juvenile arthritis, Lyme Disease, or juvenile Fibromyalgia. We can also use the acupuncture to effectively reduce symptoms of headaches, migraines, sinus pain, dental pain, and back pain in children. 4. Reduces Stress and Anxiety. It is estimated that 15-20% of individuals in the US will experience a form of anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, separation anxiety, PTSD, etc.) during their childhood or adolescence. Promising research has suggested that acupuncture can be a useful therapy for anxiety, which is something that I see clinically all the time. Additionally, kids are often overwhelmed by an increasingly busy and demanding world, whether that be schoolwork or social commitments or navigating family relationships or being involved in a multitude of activities and clubs. Acupuncture can help ease symptoms of stress in children that can become habits hard to break in later years. 3. Helps them connect with their bodies. Beyond its effectiveness at treating the condition for which a child comes in for acupuncture treatment, I think there are a lot of additional benefits that acupuncture can offer to kids and teens. The first is that it offers a way for them to connect with their bodies that is healthy, noncompetitive, and appreciative. Acupuncture allows kids to be more embodied, and for them to consciously make themselves aware of bodily sensations in a positive way. Unfortunately, in our society, the way that most children learn to “connect” with their bodies is to physically master their bodies’ weaknesses. This is how competitive sports teach us how to relate to our physical selves. As an athlete myself since childhood, I am not arguing that this is necessarily a bad thing. Competitive sports teach children lots of good things – dedication, Healthy Living Magazine

20

drive, stamina, the importance of hard work… not to mention creating a value system that includes physical fitness and healthy behavior. However, acupuncture provides a needed balance to that world. Acupuncture allows children to feel their bodies, rather than master them. This helps to promote healthy body image, a respect for their physical selves, and a better understanding of how their minds, hearts, and bodies are interconnected. 2. Teaches them how to relax. It always amazes me that we don’t teach our children how to relax. School, sports, and after-schoolactivities tend to be focused on being active, on accomplishing, on moving forward to whatever the next step is. And again, this is all well and good and healthy. However, kids NEED to know how to calm themselves down, how to slow down, how to quiet their mind and how to let their body be calm. Acupuncture provides a wonderful opportunity for them to learn how to get to a place of relaxation within themselves, and provides them with valuable skills that they can use later in life when faced with stress or difficulties. 1. Exposes them to other ways of understanding. I always tell parents, when they bring their kids in for acupuncture, that they are giving their children such a gift by exposing them to other systems of healing. Just as acupuncture teaches children that there are other ways of connecting with their bodies, it also teaches them that there are other ways of understanding themselves, their bodies, and the world around them. And anything that teaches kids to approach life with an open mind and an open heart can only be good for them. Marcie Griffith, Lic.Ac., MAOM, Dipl. Do YOU Suffer

from a

Dis-Ease Called Hope? by Mike George

Once upon a time there was a little baby bear who lived in the woods. One day, while out playing, he ran into two badgers. He wanted to play with the badgers but they didn’t want to play with him. They wanted to fight. And they did. They bullied the little baby bear every day for a week. Then, one day, the badgers stopped coming. He never saw another badger for the rest of his life. That little baby bear grew up and eventually had his own little baby bear. And the first thing he taught his own baby bear was how evil, wicked and violent badgers were. And so that little baby bear grew fearful of badgers and he hoped he would never meet one. Even daddy bear, remembering his fights with the badgers when he was little, would say, “I hope you never meet a badger, those scoundrels, those horrible creatures, I’ll never forget them”. For years, as baby bear grew up and roamed the forest, at least once a day he would have the thought, “I hope I don’t ever meet a badger, I hope I have a badger free day today.” And as he thought hopefully so he feared the badger. Then, one fateful day, he encountered three badgers. They came suddenly out of the bushes laughing and joking with each other. The bear stopped in his tracks, paralysed by the sight of the badgers. His one and only thought was “Oh no! BADGERS!” The moment the badgers saw him they stopped laughing. They also stood Online Issue July/August 2012

absolutely still as if paralysed. Then, howling in fear, they scampered back into the bushes. Now the bear was surprised at this. But it only took a few moments to realise why. He was in fact five times bigger than the badgers. He was a giant in the badgers eyes. From that day on he never feared badgers again. He never once ‘hoped’ he would not meet a badger. And the moral of the story? To live in hope is to live in fear. Hope is often just an attempt to put a positive spin on worry! Living in Hope. Hoping for something to happen is also a great to way to avoid DOING something to ‘make’ things happen or not happen. Leading sports people, business people, career people, family raising people, don’t sit around hoping for the best, they get up and create the best. They make the best happen because the know they can. And that’s probably the key phrase; know they can. Could that be why so many decide hope is enough? They live in hope because they don’t yet KNOW that they can. At best they have learned to doubt themselves and at worst they have learned to believe that they can’t! The bear had learned to believe badgers were bigger and stronger so the foundation of his hope was ignorance. And ignorance begets fear. As soon as he realised he was much bigger and stronger hope became irrelevant. Ignorance was dispelled.

Hope says that one day I MAY be able. But as long as we just ‘live in hope’ it’s unlikely that day will come. And if it does it’s likely to be too late! Somewhere in between are those who are not sure if they can, but they are not prepared to take the risk (fear) to either find out if they can, or begin learning ‘how to’ become able. Perhaps we have all known that state at some time. Hoping for something better than now! Why do we live in hope. Why do we think and say that we have high hopes? Why do we hope for a brighter future? Because we don’t like the way people are and/or the way circumstances are right now. We are afraid that the way people/circumstances are now may continue. We are in a state of resistance to the circumstances that we find our self in today. So we hope for a better tomorrow. But hope makes us lazy. It’s easier to hope than actually do something now that may create the tomorrow that we say we want. So hope becomes a comfort zone that is easy to slip into. Only our own actions can create a way out, a way beyond hope, a way beyond the paralysing effect of fear that always underlies hoping. Either that or we can learn to simply accept the way things are right now, not in helpless surrender, but from the wisdom that reminds us that acceptance of the way things are in the present is the first step in invoking and influencing change in the future. Hoping something bad won’t happen in the future. Otherwise known as worry! Worry is simply the fear of losing something in the future that we are comfortable with (i.e. attached to) now. We create an imagined future in which that comfort is lost. For this mental process we have plenty of raw material from which to shape ideas and images of our imagined catastrophes, and thereby frighten ourselves into a paralysis that prevents action. Much of that material comes from our news and entertainment industries who are always on hand to feed us with the latest darkest events with a pessimistic outlook thrown in! Hoping we will get what we want. . .eventually! Just as hoping that something bad won’t happen is really fear masquerading as hope, Online Issue July/August 2012

so waiting to get exactly what we want is usually desire masquerading as hope. However it’s not easy to see that all desire is just a way of delaying our happiness! This comes from the belief that it’s only when we get what we want that we can be truly happy. Hoping means that at best we are living for tomorrow today, which is not really living but more like avoiding life. At worst we are trying to live in the future itself, which is insane because it’s impossible. So are there ever moments when hope has a place, a value. Are there times when hope adds strength? Sometimes we hear or read real life stories of those stranded in impossible and apparently hopeless situations. Perhaps waiting to be rescued at sea or on a mountain. Then they often say, “It was hope that kept us alive”. But in such situations hope is usually that absolutely final thought that arises after all other possibilities of escape or survival have been exhausted. It momentarily assuages feelings of helplessness. It reminds us all to ask the question whenever we find our self saying or even thinking, “I hope. . .”, have we truly exhausted all possible ways to create a way forward. Have we explored all possible perspectives and perceptions which may allow us to find a different meaning than the one that is triggering our feelings of hopelessness. And then there are those moments when we say to the other, “I have high hopes for you’. It sounds eminently positive and yet, when decoded, it usually means high expectations which usually means desire. We witness this each year in the arena sport when we have collective ‘high hopes’ for our sporting heroes. And when they don’t live up to our hopes we find ourselves suffering emotionally. Our hopes are dashed by their failure which means we are living vicariously and once again missing our own life! So what then of hopelessness? Helplessness is the feeling that arises from the belief that the situation is not going to get any better and is likely to get much worse, if not fatal. It is the belief that there is nothing we can do to affect change. “It’s hopeless”, is often what we feel and say when we describe our self

25

at our ‘wits end’. It’s the moment we decide to ‘give up’ on our self or give up on the ‘other’ or on the situation. Sometimes these thoughts and feelings are entirely appropriate. They are not a sign of a spiral downwards but a liberation. It’s usually when giving up really means ‘letting go’ in relation to some situation or indeed relationship e.g. “It was hopeless so I gave up trying to convince them or make them do what I wanted” or “It was a hopeless endeavour so I let go of the idea of making a million by the end of next month”. In such contexts while there may be a sense of loss it’s outweighed by a sense of freedom from a self imposed pressure. In the Depths of Hopelessness. But many people do experience a deep and mysterious hopelessness, not in specific situations but in relation to life and living in general. It can be one of the main symptoms of depression. In such instances it is signaling an absence of well being, it’s a feeling of heaviness accompanied by a complete lack of enthusiasm for anything. Described by many as staring into a dark abyss it’s as if there is here is a huge gaping whole in the soul. However, like all forms of suffering, it is a signal something needs to change, not within the world, but within the self. That something is ‘always’ to do with self awareness or self understanding. To free ones self from deep feelings of hopelessness is to free our self from our dependency on others or the world for our sense of well being. Being well starts not with our bodies but with our mind and heart. Not the heart of our body but the heart of our being. The feelings of hopelessness arise because we lose sight of the unlimited creative power that we have and that we are. We become ignorant of the extraordinary beauty that we have and that we are. . .on the inside. We have lost the awareness that we are the masters of our destiny. So the opposite of hopelessness, or the cure for hopelessness, is not hope but the realisation we are free spirits, tied to nothing and no one, dependent on nothing and no one; that we are not only able to create our own destiny but, in truth, it’s what we are here to do. The moment Healthy Living Magazine

26

we start to translate that realisation into action hopelessness starts to fade, and hope is known for what it is, a false sense of strength. The ultimate cure for hopelessness is the realisation that nothing can overwhelm us, there is nothing that we cannot face and deal with, nothing that we cannot do. That we are not the baby bear (small and overwhelmed) but the fully grown bear who is much bigger than all the badgers in the forest. We are all bigger than any situation or circumstance that we have to face. Hence the ancient wisdom in the saying, “You will never be asked by life to face anything that you do not have the capacity to handle”. It’s just that sometimes our capacity is unrealised and life throws us the opportunity to rediscover it. And so hope and hopelessness are both diseases of consciousness. They are symptoms of deeper underlying disease known as ignorance. An ignorance of our self. They are signs that we are living in a ‘unrealised state’ i.e. we don’t know how powerful we are! Feelings of hopefulness and hopelessness are both saying. “It’s time to become more self aware”. Wake up to your capacity, your power, your intrinsic greatness. With the guidance of someone who knows this ‘inner territory’ it’s possible to induce the insights and self knowledge that restores our inner strength to our spiritual muscles! Then hope is known and used for what it is; a temporary relief from hopelessness, the lesser of two dis-eases, and perhaps a platform from which to spring forth into new action, into a new life. Question: For what do you hope for your self, for others and for the world? Reflection: Why do you hope for what you hope? Action: What can you DO that will free you from needing to be hopeful or from feeling hopeless? Mike George is a best-selling author, international speaker and spiritual teacher. For almost 30 years he been coaching, guiding and facilitating the personal and executive development of people in companies and communities in over 30 countries. In a unique blend of insight, wisdom and humour Mike brings together the three key strands of the twenty-first century—emotional/spiritual intelligence, management/leadership development and continuous “unlearning”. Due to the high increase of Deer ticks and Lyme disease on the South Shore, we strongly recommend protecting your dog by vaccinating annually against Lyme disease AND using a topical tick/flea control products like Frontline Plus. All dogs are at risk of contracting Lyme disease - even small dogs that don't spend much time outside. Both dogs and humans can bring ticks into the home, therefore both dog and human are at risk of contracting lyme disease if bitten by an infected deer tick. Ticks are usually black or brown, but can vary in size from a pinhead to a grape. Find a tick? Protect Your Dog: • Vaccinate annually against Lyme disease • Apply a topical tick control product monthly • Check your dog thoroughly for ticks each time they come into the house • Brush your dog frequently during tick season Protect Yourself: Avoid long grasses, thick brush, and heavily wooded areas • Wear light colored clothing to help you see ticks and remove them before they attach to skin • Wear long-sleeved shirt tucked into long pants tucked into socks • Frequently check your body for ticks - pay close attention to the hair/skull area •

LYME DISEASE & TICKS: Awareness & Prevention Lyme disease is caused by the spirochete bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by the Deer Tick, also known as the Black-Legged Tick. The Deer tick is smaller than the American dog tick or Brown dog tick. Lyme disease isn?t the only disease dogs can contract from ticks. Ticks can also carry canine ehrlichiosis, canine anaplasmosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, depending on which part of the country you live in or travel to.

How To Remove A Tick: Make sure it really is a tick - not just a little tag of skin! (see above link to identify) • Wear rubber gloves • Use tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible • Pull tick's body away from skin in a strong, steady upward motion - try not to crush the tick to avoid leaking infected fluids •

Services In School for

Children with Special Needs What Parents Need To Know Some children experience difficulties in school, ranging from problems with concentration, learning, language, and perception to problems with behavior and/or making and keeping friends. These difficulties may be due to one or more of the following: • physical disorders, • psychiatric disorders, • emotional problems, • behavioral problems, • learning disorders (or disabilities). Children with such special needs are usually entitled to receive additional services or accommodations through the public schools. Federal law mandates that every child receive a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment possible. To support their ability to learn in school, three Federal laws apply specifically to children with special needs: • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1975) • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (1990). Different states have different criteria for eligibility, services available, and procedures for implementing these laws. It is important for parents to be aware of these laws and related regulations in their particular area. The Laws IDEA is a federal law (1975, amended by the Office of Special Education Programs in 1997) Online Issue July/August 2012

that governs all special education services for children in the United States. Under IDEA, in order for a child to be eligible for special education, they must be in one of the following categories: • serious emotional disturbance • learning disabilities • mental retardation • traumatic brain injury • autism • vision and hearing impairments • physical disabilities • other health impairments. Section 504 is a civil rights statute (1973) that requires that schools not discriminate against children with disabilities and provide them with reasonable accommodations. It covers all programs or activities, whether public or private, that receive any federal financial assistance. Reasonable accommodations include untimed tests, sitting in front of the class, modified homework and the provision of necessary services. Typically, children covered under Section 504 either have less severe disabilities than those covered under IDEA or have disabilities that do not fit within the eligibility categories of IDEA. Under Section 504, any person who has an impairment that substantially limits a major life activity is considered disabled. Learning and social development are included under the list of major life activities. The ADA (1990) requires all educational institutions, other than those operated by

religious organizations, to meet the needs of children with psychiatric disorders. The ADA prohibits the denial of educational services, programs or activities to students with disabilities and prohibits discrimination against all such students. Evaluation of Your Child As a parent, you may request an evaluation of your child to determine his or her needs for special education and/or related services. The evaluation may include psychological and educational testing, a speech and language evaluation, occupational therapy assessment and a behavioral analysis. These are the steps you need to take: 1. Meet with your child's teacher to share your concerns and request an evaluation by the school's child study team. Parents can also request independent professional evaluations. 2. Submit your requests in writing for evaluations and services. Always date your requests and keep a copy for your records. 3. Keep careful records, including observations reported by your child's teachers and any communications (notes, reports, letters, etc.) between home and school. The results of the evaluation determine your child's eligibility to receive a range of services under the applicable law. Following the evaluation, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed. Examples of categories of services in IEPs include: Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, and/or the provision of a classroom aide. Parents do not determine whether their child is eligible under the law, however, parents are entitled to participate in the development of

34

the IEP. Additionally, the findings of school's evaluation team are not final. You have the right to appeal their conclusions and determination. The school is required to provide you with information about how to make an appeal. What a Parent Can Do Children with special needs are entitled rights to services in school under federal and state laws. Parents should always advocate for their child and must be proactive and take necessary steps to make sure their child receives appropriate services. The process can be confusing and intimidating for parents. Here are some tips: • Parents should request copies of their school district's Section 504 plan. This is especially important when a school district refuses services. • If the school district does not respond to your request, you can contact a U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights Regional Office for assistance. • If the school district refuses services under the IDEA or Section 504 or both, you may choose to challenge this decision through a due process hearing (a legal hearing in which you and your child have an advocate who can help express your views and concerns). • It may also be necessary to retain your own attorney if you decide to appeal a school's decision. • Other resources for parents include: the State Department of Education, Bazelon Center for Health Law at www.bazelon.org. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) represents over 8,500 child and adolescent psychiatrists who are physicians with at least five years of additional training beyond medical school in general (adult) and child and adolescent psychiatry. You know that your child has a disability. What do you know about your child's disability . . . specifically? How does the disability affect the child's school performance? In what areas? Can the child's disability be minimized or "cured" through intensive remediation? What are the child's strengths? What tools can be used to minimize the impact of the disability? Step One of your Game Plan is to become an expert about your child's disability. Read at least one book about your child's disability - several books are better. Here you will find several good books about children's disabilities. Legacy of the Blue Heron: Living with Learning Disabilities by Harry Sylvester. about who can attend an IEP meeting? “chosen by the discretion of the parent or the local educational agency, other individuals who have knowledge or special expertise about the child.”

What The Law Means

The school or parents may bring other people to the IEP meeting. The law says these people must have “knowledge or expertise”. The one doing the inviting makes the decision about this person’s “knowledge or expertise”. The school must consider information from others whom the parent brings.

How Parents Can Ensure

Their Children’s Success in the

College Application Process by Mary Ellen Bavaro

As the summer draws to a close and the next school year is about to begin, it is important that high school juniors and seniors (a/k/a college applicants) be prepared to hit the ground running when it comes to the process of applying to college in the fall—a process which has become much more competitive over the past decade with the average college applicant in Massachusetts applying to approximately 8-12 schools just to ensure that they have some choices as to which college they attend. Parents play an extremely important role in this process, both in managing all of the tasks to be accomplished and deadlines, and in guiding their daughters and sons as to which schools to investigate, apply to, and ultimately attend. My advice to parents and students regarding how to be most successful in the college application process from my work the past nine years is: Start the process as early as possible: For entering high school juniors this means not waiting until the end of junior year to start thinking about which schools they might be interested in exploring. For students entering senior year, you they most likely began this process last year as juniors and conducted most of their college visits this past summer. What applicants should start early, as in now, is finalizing where they are applying, writing their essays, and completing their applications. It is much too difficult and stressful to wait to complete applications during the months around the holidays when most applications Healthy Living Magazine

38

are due. Even if you are not planning to apply Early Action or Early Decision with a November 15 deadline, pretend that you are so that you have everything completed and submitted by Thanksgiving and can enjoy the holidays without the stress of unfinished applications looming overhead. Focus on your grades and doing as best as you can. For juniors, your transcript matters the most in this process. For seniors, continuing to focus on your academics and show effort and improvement—and not “senioritis”—all senior year is essential to demonstrate to colleges. Make sure your applications are as professional and well-packaged as possible. If you know how to do so on your own, great. If you don’t, you would be wise to get professional help because well-packaged and high-quality applications not only result in acceptances, but excellent financial aid awards! To the extent possible that parents can ensure the three requirements of a successful process above, their children should do well in the process of applying to college. Good luck this fall! Mary Ellen Bavaro, Ed.M., is the Founder, Head Tutor and Consultant of College Connections, an academic tutoring and college and private high school application assistance company helping students to thrive throughout their K-12 education, college, and career. www.collegeconnectionsonline.com; bavarome@verizon.net.

Your Personal Totem Pole

Connect With the Brilliance of Your Chakras

by Qatana Samanen, Ph.D

Your Divine Nature expresses itself through the energy of your chakras, each chakra a unique facet of your Self. How wonderful it is to connect with all aspects of your Self, to learn the perspective that each one offers and experience the strength that each one brings. Your Personal Totem PoleŠ creates this connection so you can draw on the wisdom and guidance of your Divine Nature to manifest the life you want. Your Divine Nature longs to give you the guidance and support you need. But it can't help you - unless you ask! Online Issue July/August 2012

Your Personal Totem PoleŠ creates a loving, dependable relationship between you and the Divine within. In a state of deep relaxation, you focus on each chakra in turn and invite the image of a Guide to emerge. As you interact with your Guides - often animals - you gain access to their unique wisdom and strength. When all seven Chakra Guides come together in council, they create balance, harmony and the wholeness you deserve.

When you connect with your Chakra Guides you discover: Fresh perspective that opens up new options and possibilities Unsuspected strengths and inner resources you can use to deal with the challenges in your life Understanding and compassion to help improve your relationship with yourself and with others Your Personal Totem PoleŠ operates on the level of energy. When your energy shifts, positive change follows in your thoughts, feelings and actions. In the twenty five years I've been using Personal Totem PoleŠ to help my clients create the lives they want, I am constantly in awe at the beauty, power and precision of this work. Gain fresh perspective to open up possibilities you never imagined Divine perspective transports you beyond the limits of your ego's viewpoint so you can see the larger picture. Options you never imagined suddenly become apparent. Eager to transition into an academic career, Karen climbed onto the Star that presented itself in her 6th chakra. The win/ win arrangement she envisioned from this perspective got buy-in from the partners in her consulting firm, freeing her to pursue the life she wanted. Don couldn't bring himself to delegate until the Sun in his 1st chakra told him that it would rise tomorrow without his help. Remembering this message empowered him to quit micromanaging and focus on his own job. Don became more productive at work, while both the performance and morale in his department improved. At the outset of my coaching career I felt ready to throw in the towel when I failed to win a hoped for contract. The Sunflower of Success in my 5th chakra taught me the importance of perseverance and gave me the courage to continue on. Discover inner strengths to help you create the life you want We all have strengths that have remained undiscovered and undeveloped. Your Chakra Healthy Living Magazine

Guides connect you with these strengths, providing you with unsuspected resources to help you deal more effectively with the challenges you face. In imagery you can merge with your Guides, feeling what they feel and knowing what they know. When you become one with a Bear who has come to show you your power, or a Fish who's there to teach you to go with the flow, you experience first-hand those characteristics that enable you to achieve what you could not do before. Personal qualities that felt out of reach become instantly familiar, and you come into greater wholeness. The Elephant who appeared in Lorraine's 3rd chakra revealed the strength and wisdom that helped her through a painful divorce. The lazy Cat in George's 6th chakra connected him with a part of himself that not only knew how to relax, but was eager to help him transform his Type A behavior and live a more balanced life. Once the Fish in a bowl in her 2nd chakra showed Elizabeth how fearlessly it swam free in a pond, she felt the courage to return to work after twelve years as a stay at home mom. Experience the unconditional love that transforms your relationships Your Divine Nature is the source of unconditional love and compassion that can transform your relationships with yourself and with others. Dawn, the COO of a telecommunications company, came to depend on the Angelic Figure that appeared in her 7th chakra for support and guidance in dealing with her erratic and often abusive boss, the CEO. Without this help, Dawn would have had to leave the job she loved. Once the Bear in my 4th chakra showed me the conflict from my son's point of view, I was able to back off and let him do his homework the way he wanted to. This put a blessed end to the power struggles at home while his school performance - well, it may not have improved, but it certainly didn't get any worse. Even though the wisdom and guidance you receive from your Chakra Guides may be no different from what a trusted friend or advisor
