Serving South of Boston to the Cape in Print and Online Dearest Healthy Living Friends, I want to thank you wholeheartedly for the unconditional commitment you have made to Healthy Living Magazine. I know times are really hard for folks nowadays, I promise to give to you my complete dedication, enthusiasm and energy in educating the community about wellness and prevention, as we continue to heal one person at a time! I often read a passage by Robin Sharma, called “The Project,” that inspires me to continue on my journey . . . thereby assisting you with yours. Please enjoy, Candita Within each of us lies The Project. An idea longing to be nourished, cherished, launched and completed. Writing a novel. Starting an enterprise. Raising a family. Freeing a nation. Our deepest desire is to do The Project. To express our vision. To carefully and patiently watch it unfold. To present it to those who will benefit by it. And to experience the pride of the job beautifully done. Yet, a million distractions battle for our attention. And one hundred doubts fill our hearts. And so slowly and subtly, we recite the excuses that construct our reality. And we shelve The Project. Postponing it for a better day. But postponing The Project is life’s greatest lie. Picasso and Basquiat, Einstein and Edison, Jobs and Jay-Z didn’t wait for an ideal day to do their dream. They started. When it was hard. Though they had little. While they were alone. So many of the world’s troubles are symptoms of The Project undone. Pain is the result of potential denied. And when you avoid The Project, you dishonor your gifts. Your Talents. Your Genius. A portion of you goes numb. Silent. Quiet. Scared. The moment you start The Project, everything shifts. Purpose, focus, passion and peace returns to your life. Eyes sparkle. Energy explodes. Inspiration flows. And your days become supported by coincidence, power and peak possibility. This very day presents your greatest opportunity. To be a lion not a sheep. To walk with giants versus among the meek. To celebrate your best instead of succumbing to the worst. To lift others up versus tear others down. To pour creativity, mastery, courage and light into a world aching for marks of heroism. So please, step up. Release all chains. Dispute all doubts. Start The Project. Do the dream. And change the world. You are responsible for no less. For more information about Robin Sharma visit http://www.robinsharma.com

The USA is currently in the throes of a swiftly moving Lyme disease epidemic. Hundreds of cases are contracted daily, and the tick population, the primary insect carrier, is multiplying in proportions beyond historically normal. Anxiety over potential infection is rising, nationwide. Climate changes over the past decade have yielded milder temperatures in the USA’s higher latitudes, enabling ticks to now “winter over” in northern New England, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Canada and mountainous elevations of the Alleghenies, Sierras, Cascades and Rocky Mountains. Additionally, migratory bird patterns have introduced Lyme disease to southern regions such as Florida, Texas, even as far distant as Uruguay and Scandinavia. Lyme disease is found in eighty-nine countries of the world! Lyme disease, transmitted by a bite from a tick, is a bacterial infection caused by an organism known as borrelia burgdorferi, or one of the variant tick-borne co-infections caused by parasites, bacteria and micoplasmas. Borrelia, the primary, is a spirochete or corkscrew bacteria, which is in the same family as syphilis, yet is considered to be stronger and more virulent. Like syphilis, Lyme initially starts out with seemingly mild symptomatology, but if untreated,

the New HIV?

can cause devastating effects to the central nervous system, heart, kidneys, skeletal and immune system with sometimes permanent repercussions. The CDC by their own admission, estimates 300,000 cases of Lyme are contracted in the USA annually and a mere 10% are properly diagnosed, leaving over 250,000 annually with misdiagnoses, such as fibromyalgia, Lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, MS, migraines, learning disabilities, bi-polar disorders, Parkinson’s, heart arrhythmia’s and more, when the Lyme organisms are the true culprits. Reasoning suggests well over 2,000,000 people in the USA are afflicted with the chronic form of Lyme. Immediate attention, funding, research and education needs to be stepped up to address the misunderstandings and ravages of this exploding epidemic, which has surpassed HIV in its growth rate, as the number one infectious illness in the USA.

The USA eastern seaboard, Ohio River Valley, Northern California and the Pacific Northwest are under fierce assault. Individuals and pets come into proximity with this insect. However, we can never be slack about caution with this illness. The standard lab test most local and regional facilities run for Lyme disease has over a 60% error rate. They are very inaccurate, giving many false negatives, leaving people sick when they need treatment. A LLMD (Lyme literate) physician will use one of the three USA Lyme specialty labs, with more attuned testing. These newer labs, Igenex, SUNY Stonybrook and Clongen are helping to turn thousands of lives around. The chronic form of Lyme disease may require prolonged treatment protocols. Some may effectively respond to a rotational regime of antibiotics, antimalarials, and antiparasitic pharmaceuticals, administered by a Lyme literate physician. The best recovery outcomes for chronic Lyme, however, seems to be obtained by an Integrative Medicine approach. Rebuilding the massive depletions to various systems of the body, is just as critical as killing off the entrenched microbial infections. A certified clinical nutritionist, licensed naturopath, licensed acupuncturist, or certified classical Homeopath versed in Lyme, may be excellent resources to assist in recovery. It appears this is the epidemic of our era, asking us to marry the two hands of healthcare –the diagnostics and pharmaceutical weaponry of conventional medicine, with the supportive therapeutics of complementary alternative medicine. Two hands working together are better than one. Without addressing the serious depletions to the immune, nervous, and endocrine systems, recovery from chronic Lyme appears continued on page 4 . . .

Retrain

your mind, your body, and your breathing! by Suzanne Boynton

A person can go 30 days without food and three days without water. Yet in three minutes without oxygen, the body can expire. From a physical perspective, breathing is the connection to life. By paying attention to your breathing throughout the day, you will be amazed at how often it is used to effect movement and emotion. Since the diaphragm has its origin on the inside of the ribcage and lumbar spine, any change in the position of the ribs or spine will have an effect on the action of the diaphragm. Therefore, when exercising, it is essential to be aware of how breathing can be used to enhance the flow of movement in your body. STOTT PILATES® and The GYROTONIC® method use carefully chosen breathing patterns to enhance spinal stability, release fascial restrictions, and create flow in the body.

Since the neuromuscular system is designed to memorize movement patterns, sometimes it’s necessary to unlearn old ways of being in the body and learn healthier patterns. If you have experienced injuries, surgery, pain or postural issues, the

benefits of retraining the stabilizers and core first are irreplaceable. Unfortunately, the mere presence of pain can interfere with the body’s ability to re-establish its innate movement patterns. When considering a new exercise program, it’s important that the exercises of choice don’t create pain or muscle imbalance in the body. It’s also helpful to engage the mind through visualization for a more effective retraining of neuromuscular habits. If you are told how, shown how, asked to visualize doing and then perform an exercise and feel it, several parts of the brain are activated, making it easier for the integration of the proper motion. As new movement flows correctly in the body, the ability to maintain strength and fluid motion throughout daily activities is much easier to feel. When choosing an exercise program, remember each body has its own unique history. Sometimes the exercise that is perfect for one person is contraindicated for another.

The GYROTONIC® method is an exercise system that uses the body to go beyond its limitations. GYROTONIC® exercise is designed to increase the functional capacity of the entire body. Stagnation, regardless if it is mental, emotional or physical, is the cause of most disease. Breathing creates movement and movement creates breathing in this type of exercise. As clients move through the various motions on the equipment, they often feel a yawning sensation in their body. This yawning is an indication that the diaphragm has let go of its hold on the spine and posture muscles. At this point, the movement is at its structural and energetic capacity, and space is created in and around the joints and organs. There is a sense of “opening” in the body. The goal is to be at home in the body without pain or restriction. By creating balanced motion and stabilization through contrast, the body learns

proper and safe movement patterns. This exercise is like swimming in water, however, it’s better, since the equipment can be adjusted to support the spine and limbs, allowing there to be no stress or strain in the motions. The best part is you don’t have to put on a bathing suit or get wet! Positive change is possible through reorganizing the neuromuscular pathways responsible for habitual posture and movement patterns. The best way to accomplish this change is through a teaching style that is informative, stimulating, challenging and engaging to the entire body, mind, and through proper breathing.

yoga

STOTT PILATES® is an ideal place to start if you are new to the exercise world, feeling unhappy with your current program, or are recovering from pain and injury. In this style of training you will learn proper positioning, modifications and how to first move from your core strength. By beginning with a series of basic principles of movement, you can safely reeducate your body to move from a stable base of support. Using breathing techniques that activate the deep abdominals and back muscles, the body reconnects with its center of strength. Careful attention is placed on pelvic placement, ribcage placement, scapular motion and stabilization, head and cervical placement. The goal of STOTT PILATES® is to help reestablish the three natural curves of the spine, support the spine, and balance the muscles around the joints.

agribusiness — and stacked against the rest of us.

Well, it’s been signed. The biotech rider, or the "Monsanto Protection Act," as it has been appropriately dubbed, was signed into law April 2013 by President Obama. What does this mean, and why is everyone so upset about it? For me, this sneaky little earmark, which was introduced anonymously into the short-term funding bill to keep the government afloat, is just one more example of an unfair system stacked in favor of big

The rider, Section 735, states that if the USDA has already approved a particular crop for market and then the courts order it off the market (possibly until further health studies can be done), the USDA "shall" issue temporary permits for use and sale of that crop until those studies are complete. Huh? If the courts have ordered a crop off the market, why would we compel the USDA to allow its continued use? According to Andrew Kimbrell with the Center for Food Safety, The word "shall" forces the USDA to continue allowing biotech crop cultivation even if its commercialization was overturned. They've taken away the discretion

of the Secretary of Agriculture. Its real not-so-hidden purpose is to take away the ability to effectively vacate the approval of a crop that's been approved illegally. Already broken system Let's back up a second. It's important to note that this tug-ofwar between the courts and the USDA has historical precedent — and Big 6 interests tend to win out. In 2010, for example, a federal court in California ruled that the USDA had not adequately assessed potential environmental impacts before approving GE sugarbeets for market. The court effectively banned production until those studies had been done. Facing a huge loss in seed sales, Monsanto petitioned the USDA to grant "partial deregulation," meaning continued on page 36 . . .

emphasizing the harmonious balance of yin and yang and mindful attention to ingredients and their preparation. David Snieckus is a graduate of the world renowned Kushi Institute, and has been practicing Macrobiotics since 1977. What's the theory behind macrobiotic cooking? Macrobiotic cooking is based on how everything changes to and from, the yin (expansion) and yang (contraction). One applies this wisdom to the selection, preparation and cooking of grains, vegetables and beans in their abundant variety. How do you know if food is yin or yang? Comparatively, foods that grow below the soil line, like root vegetables, are more yang. Foods that grow above the soil line, like beans, vegetables and fruit are more yin. Balancing yin and yang food results in feeling strong and energetic.

Gluten

Sensitivity

Health Tip!

by Dr. Devorah Feinbloom

It is thought

that gluten sensitivity is more common than celiac disease. Currently it is estimated that 1% of the general population has gluten sensitivity and that number is rising according to some sources. Because of its elasticity, gluten is used as a binding agent or thickener in a variety of processed food and drink (beers, soups, sauces) and in additives like natural or artificial flavors. Oats are generally processed on the same equipment as wheat so therefore become contaminated with gluten. The immune system can act in a variety of ways to gluten depending on a person's genetic, environmental or nutritional health therefore there are a wide variety of responses that people will experience to gluten. According to Sara Tiner, gluten sensitivity is determined by:

Gastrointestinal or general discomfort related to gluten intake

several weeks and then reintroducing it to determine if complaints reoccur).

Wine is naturally gluten-free, making it a go-to alcoholic drink for sufferers of celiac disease. However, some vintners use oak barrels sealed with wheat paste, which opens up the possibility for crosscontamination.

Helping Your Child Cope by Robert Zucker

To paraphrase Thomas Paine during another troubled time in our nation’s history, these are times that try all of our souls. In fact, as I write this article, I can hear the TV playing in the next room reporting on the ongoing manhunt in Watertown, just miles from my Weymouth home. Ever since the Boston Marathon bombings and the horrific manhunt that followed, parents across the country, and particularly those close to Boston, have been handed the double-whammy of facing their own fear and grief while determining how, when – and even whether-or-not – to inform their children. When I was a grief counselor at a medical center, I often met with grieving parents in the ER, ICU, or Pediatric ICU as their loved ones

In Times of Terror

were dying or had just died. More recently, I worked in hospice settings where numerous parents and grandparents struggled with whether or not to include their children and grandchildren in honest conversations about dying and death. For this article, in order to help you consider how to talk with your children about about the Boston Marathon bombings, I’ll discuss my work with grieving families following violent deaths. But first, you may be asking yourself how you can effectively shield your children from the recent tragic events. Hopefully, you can shelter the very young from frightening news by not playing the television or radio news reports while they are awake. Older kids, however, have easy access to radio, television, Facebook, Twitter,

etc., and, like it or not, they hear everything. If you can’t shield them, I believe that you must attempt to have meaningful conversations with them in order to help them effectively understand what is happening and manage their fear and grief. Once you’re aware that your children have learned about the terror around them, whether directly or as a result of media exposure, your children need you to be truthful, protective, honest and supportive. In order to accomplish this, the information you share with them should be properly distilled and carefully paced. I will explain these two concepts by telling you about Mary, whose husband died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Almost immediately after the death of her husband, Mary

Ian’s specialties include, but are not limited to: Neck/ Back Pain, Headaches/Migraines, Bulging/Herniated Discs, Pinched Nerves, Tendonitis/ Bursitis, TMJ Dysfunctions, Fibromyalgia. Experience has taught Ian that under physical duress, restrictions develop that cause an individual’s body tissues to feel restricted, burdened, and/or “dis—eased”. Remove the core restrictions and the body

returns to its relaxed, balanced, healthy state. He has developed a unique therapy that focuses on listening to the body, identifying the trouble areas, and intuitively responding to its needs. Unlike traditional chiropractic and physical therapy methods which emphasize routine manipulation of the symptomatic body part, Ian utilizes a distinctive approach by incorporating techniques like Reiki, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation and other forms of soft tissue release. This is what he refers to as “Light Touch” therapy. This diverse blend provides a patient with a therapy flexible enough to address many causes of the symptoms.

How did it happen? If he asks how, I advised Mary to use the least overwhelming language possible. She told me later that when he did ask her, she told her son that his

daddy made his body stop working with a gun. Of course the entire story was much more graphic than that, but Mary wisely used the least overwhelming, yet truthful, explanation she could think of. This is what we mean by distilling. Why did it happen? I suggested to Mary that if she didn’t know why her husband took his life, it would be fine for her to tell her son that she simply didn’t know why he did it. However, if she felt that it was the result of a mental illness, even a young child is usually able to understand that mental illness can cause great emotional pain, which might lead to suicide. I also advised Mary to tell her child about alternatives to suicide – such as seeking professional counseling, receiving group support, taking medication, and psychiatric hospitalization. It was troubling and painful for Mary to tell her son the truth, especially since the story of his father’s suicide would likely be deeply challenging for the rest of his life. Yet, by distilling the story of her husband’s violent death to its least overwhelming truth, by patiently pacing their conversations, and by reaching out for support from a knowledgeable counselor, Mary established herself as an invaluable resource for her son for the months and years to come. Hopefully, Mary’s story will help you plan a meaningful conversation about the recent terrorist attack in Boston with your child. Here are some final tips: Start your conversation by asking your child what s/he has already heard about the events in Boston. Carefully correct any misconceptions, remembering to distill and pace your conversation. Provide comfort. Give lots of hugs! Provide reassurance regarding safety measures in your home and community. Talk about the good work of area police and area officials. Remind children of their friendly neighbors and loving family members. Encourage your children to be kind, loving and caring. Your child’s reactions to events may reveal themselves over time, so remember to monitor any changes in your child’s behavior, changes in sleep patterns, and any appetite changes.

It is not unusual for children to regress during times of high stress. Children or adults who have suffered previous traumatic events are particularly susceptible to re-traumatization during subsequent frightening times. They may experience flashbacks and/or heightened fear and anxiety. If you are concerned about your child having a difficult time coping, seek advice from your pediatrician and/or a counselor specializing in family grief or trauma. Seek support for yourself from your friends, loved ones, clergy and/ or a counselor. Be patient with yourself and your significant other. Get adequate rest. Avoid alcohol. Eat well. Get exercise. Be grateful. As I complete this article, I can hear on the TV in the next room that the 19-year old bombing suspect has finally been apprehended. I breath a sigh of relief, but know that this disturbing story will continue to unfold. Your child will have more questions and concerns and will need you to provide loving support in the days, weeks and months to come. You can do it! had to tell her eight-year-old son, who was not home at the time, what had happened. First, she chose appropriate language to provide her son with the most “necessary” information. Then she listened and watched carefully for his reactions, in order to effectively pace their conversation. Finally, she found a helping professional to collaborate with her for the long and difficult road ahead. At first, Mary desperately wanted to hide the suicide story from her son, but she quickly realized that he’d eventually hear about it at school or on the news. Unsure how to proceed, she called friends for help and eventually was referred to me. By the time we talked, Mary was ready to tell her son that his father had killed himself, but she had no idea how to begin the conversation. I coached her over the phone, and that evening their conversation went something like this: “Daddy died. That means that his body totally stopped working. He died from suicide. A suicide is when someone makes his body stop working.” Then she paused and asked, “What more would you like to know?” Let’s consider what we can learn from Mary’s initial conversation with her son. First, she distilled the story of her husband’s death by explaining the suicide story in the simplest language: “Daddy made his body stop working.” Then she paced the conversation by letting her son choose what he wanted to do next. If her son didn’t want to ask any more questions and indicated, either verbally or non-verbally, that he needed to end the conversation, I advised Mary to sit a little while longer with him and, perhaps, make a list together of the safest grown-ups he could turn to if he had questions later. I also told her to prepare for two questions that, sooner or later, her son would probably ask her: How and Why.

Our vision began with the creation of our Seven Circuit Labyrinth. we have continued to bring many healing modalities into place. I see the labyrinth as a metaphor for life's journey offering lessons as we walk the path. Walking the labyrinth you can address challenges, meditate, pray, create peace, and

visionary find serenity. When you get into the labyrinth you fall into a vortex of energy, let go of the chatter in your mind, feel all your senses, listen to the birds . . . It's a place to feel complete and let the healing begin! In my studies at DoveStar Massage Therapy School I learned to give a massage that I would like to receive. DoveStar has you connect with your energy and never disconnect. So, when I give a massage, my hands never leave a person's body. I became a Reiki Master in order to master this practice and get out of my own head. I, myself, needed to heal the pains of being an alcoholic. I felt I was called to create a sacred space for folks in need of deep healing to experience

nonjudgemental, unconditional love in a safe environment. For clients, Reiki is about healing from the inside out. First, they journey into a relaxation place where they can access their own spirituality. That's when they start healing. Finally, they come to listen to their authentic truth and become aware of where we are in the scheme of things. That's called shadow work, learning where you can access parts of your subconscious that you pushed aside growing up: the judge, the witness, the clown, the shoulds, and the should nots. continued on next page

The Bio-Mat

Theory and Practice by Fang-Chih Lee and Peter Trenouth

There’s an old joke about a professor of education who observed an inner-city eighth grade math class. The innovative, young teacher’s

breathing and graceful motions fall short of conventional theories about exercise. Asian philosophers think differently: Qi is a positive, cosmic

Benefits also include boosted immune function, rejuvenation of skin, reduction of stress, fatigue, pain and swelling, balancing metabolism and weight loss, elevated energy and vitality along with an increased deep delta state of relaxation. students eagerly engaged the formulas she gave them as they applied computations usually taught to high school algebra classes. When called upon, every kid happily demonstrated effective problem solving skills. During his follow-up discussion with the teacher, the professor stated her dynamic methodology apparently worked well in practice. “But,” he added, “does it work in theory?” Although the professor is an extreme example, he reveals a common tendency. Old mental habits kept him from perceiving more than he saw. Veteran students of Tai Chi will tell you this ancient Chinese art certainly works for them. Complementing these testimonies, numerous scientific studies have shown that a regular Tai Chi routine leads to improved flexibility, balance, sense of wellbeing, and vigor. A recent report from Harvard Medical School agrees and finds Tai Chi benefits our internal organs, including the immune and circulatory systems. Overall, people end up feeling, thinking, and moving better. Skeptics believe Tai Chi’s slow

energy present everywhere. While the integration of easy, rhythmic breathing with slow movements gets Qi flowing to joints, bones, and muscles, it sends Qi through the same body channels that acupuncturists access. It revitalizes organs and generates peace of mind. We don’t all think like Asian philosophers, but we don’t have to think like the education professor. The practice of Tai Chi yields clear, measurable improvements in personal health. Tai Chi’s postures, though unconventional, do not cause undue stress. Instead, Tai Chi’s emphasis on the whole body guides us towards deeper confidence and relaxation. Simply put, it works. The Challenge of Growing Up MINI OLYMPIANS! by Jeffrey L. Johnson

With ADHD

The world of ADHD can be quite a confusing and overwhelming one for those who live in it. Chances are most of us know or have met someone who has ADHD. However, most people have little understanding of the disorder and what goes on in the mind of a person with ADHD. Some people may be familiar with the behaviors associated with ADHD which typically fall into three categories: inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Because of their impulsiveness and hyperactivity, children with ADHD often find themselves to be shunned by their peers and become the object of ridicule due to their behavior. Eager to win the acceptance of their peers, they will often engage in comical or disruptive behavior that doesn’t make them very popular with other children or adults for that matter. Enduring constant negative remarks from early childhood through adulthood often takes a dire toll on ADHD sufferers. While a child’s self-concept plays a role in the success they find as adults, it plays an especially important role in the success of a child with ADHD. It simply becomes unfeasible for the ADHD child to attain such a positive view of themselves if all they ever hear is negative, discouraging remarks and commentary.

ADHD deserves attention from all of us. Society needs to be educated about ADHD to understand the condition which plagues these children. We need to teach tolerance, compassion, and ultimately acceptance of this disorder. What people must understand is that there is no magic switch to turn it off. ADHD with all of its hyperactivity and impulsivity is always present in these children’s brains. With increased awareness, we can hopefully one day bring social acceptance to ADHD, erase the stigma associated with it, and ease the minds of the children who live with it.

A Father’s Perspective As a father of a child with ADHD, I feel my son’s pain every day. I sympathize with him as he vents his frustrations of the day: the other children that incessantly pick on him at school, the adults who don’t want to hear what he has to say, and what seems to be endless homework. I know what a good kid he really is, and it breaks my heart that others just view him as weird or annoying. I would do anything to make the world a more accepting place for people like him.

The Key to Reading Confidence

Meet Joe, a college student struggling in his classes. Recently, he sat down to talk about his experience in school. "I can remember reading out loud in class and then not being able to answer the questions. Reading the words was no problem. But, then when I couldn't answer the questions, the kids would laugh at me. The worst was that I had a teacher in high school that continually called me stupid . . . maybe I am. Am I?" Joe’s problem with literacy isn’t that he can't decode the words, it’s that he can’t comprehend the concepts. Telling him to "pay attention" or "think when you read" doesn’t help him. As Joe reads or listens to language, he processes "parts"—the in-one-ear-andout-the-other syndrome. He remembers a few details, but he can't get the big picture. He has always had this problem, and not just when he reads. When he tries to follow directions and can’t remember all of them, he gets in trouble for not paying attention. When he tries to express himself, verbally or in writing, it comes out disjointed and out of sequence. When he listens to conversations or classroom presentations, it goes by him before he can get it. When he tries to participate in conversation he can’t make salient points because he spoke to the "parts" he processed. When he tries to think critically or problem solve, he is constantly frustrated. Though Joe can read and spell words, he has a language processing problem that has permeated the quality of his life and eroded his self-esteem. Joe's symptoms can be traced to his difficulty in getting the gestalt, the whole—necessary for processing language and thinking. Most importantly, his difficulty in getting the gestalt can be traced to his weakness in the sensory-cognitive function of concept imagery—the ability to visualize the whole.

20

While researching the relationship of imagery to comprehension and trying various steps to develop imagery, Nanci Bell, co-founder and director of Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, discovered that individuals who had difficulty understanding could not connect the parts to form an imaged whole. Instead, they got "parts” —bits and pieces— and could not get the main idea, draw a conclusion, make an inference, or evaluate. This processing of parts instead of the gestalt contributes to a range of symptoms, most of which Joe has experienced: • Weak reading comprehension • Weak oral language comprehension • Weak oral language expression • Weak written language expression • Difficulty following directions • Difficulty with critical thinking • Difficulty with problem solving • Weak sense of humor Unfortunately, weakness in concept imagery can be a hidden problem in the field of reading. It is often misdiagnosed, and it interferes with processing both oral and written language. Those who do not have the problem cannot know how painful it is. Individuals describe it as feeling foggy, like when you go to sleep in a movie and then cannot put it altogether. They say that they have hidden the problem behind good social skills, noting when to smile appropriately in conversation or when to laugh at jokes they really didn't get. They say that they go to tremendous lengths to cover this problem because most people just think they aren't as bright or aren't good listeners or communicators. A graduate from MIT said that when he was in class trying to grasp a lecture, it was as if someone was going along with an eraser and erasing the language before he could get it.

As we process information through our sensory system, concept imagery brings the sensory information together, enabling us to create the gestalt. And, the gestalt is a necessary piece for

Healthy Living Magazine FALL ONLINE 2013

cognition. Furthermore, there is little question that imagery is directly related to cognition. Aristotle said, long before phonemic awareness was thought about, "It is impossible to think without a mental picture." We asked Jodi Rehm body worker, of Transform Holistic, in Pembroke, to share her experience while teaching kids Reiki. “They are very close to the flow of life,” Rehm said. “It is easy for them to learn how to use Reiki in their everyday lives. They have a closeness to source that most of us sadly loose as we age. Harvesting this inner knowing, with guidance and the freedom to express it, creates the most amazing healers . . . The Things Nobody Talks About

For many forms of breast cancer, Oncologists prescribe estrogen blockers because estrogen often feeds breast cancer cells. Unfortunately, estrogen is what makes a woman moist and supple in her vagina. We experience dryness and contraction of the vaginal opening without it. This may lead to painful intercourse and that leads to no intercourse – Ouch! Nobody talks about this and it is a real shame to lose such an important part of your life when you don’t have to. How do we make the vaginal opening moist and supple again so it can be stretched to accommodate our

partners without causing us pain? In our “old normal” life, we could have gone to a nice herbal combination of Calendula petals, Comfrey leaf and St. Johns wort flowers in an oil for relief from dryness and little tears in our vaginal tissue. In our “new normal” life, most of us must not use St. Johns wort which is contraindicated for anti-depressants, birth control and, most importantly, the estrogen blockers the oncologists prescribe to prevent the re-occurrence of any cancer cells. Thankfully, moisturizing oil without St. Johns

A word on Calendula . . . Calendula petals are some of Mother Nature’s most wonderful healing gifts to us. They have antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-viral and vulnerary (wound healing) properties. Calendula has no known side effects and is available in all herbal apothecaries. A word of caution . . . your immune system was blasted by your cancer treatment and you will do best with the freshest quality herbs which usually come from a local provider. SURVIVING SIX CANCERS by Evan Gessman

A Faith Journey

My life is truly a unique one. I had my life planned out beautifuly, but that changed . . .

The year was 1986, the Boston Red Sox were in a play-off and World Series bound, gas was cheaper, postage too. Sometime in the summer of that year, I visited my PCP re: a pain that I was experiencing in my stomach. I was then referred to a Urologist, then an Oncologist. X-rays revealed that the cause could be either a tumor or a hernia. Surgery would be in early June.

the other testicle became enlarged. The oncologist decided against giving me a form of chemo that I wouldn't be able to handle; he had faith that receiving injections from an endocrinologist would be the solution. I was also informed that I wouldn't be able to produce children! Suddenly, my world was being turned upside down, I wasn't prepared for this.

At this point I need to mention something that I was doing to keep my sanity afloat In the post op, I was during the radiation told by the doctor, treatments and right that the cause of my after the second distress wasn't as surgery; volunteer first predicted. A Journey Interview with Nancy Smith

Nancy, you offer readings in the Akashic Records. What are the Akashic Records? The scientist Ervin Laszlo talks about a Quantum field – a field that is at the root of all reality, which conserves and conveys information. The field is known among many as the Akashic Records. Edgar Casey says the Akashic Records are the Books of Life – the records of every soul’s journey. You can explore who you are and your place of origin. To me the Akashic energy is the original, the first energy of consciousness. In my experience it is the source of unconditional love, the stuff we are created from. It is the energy of “home.” When I am in this space I find I can offer the best readings possible. What can people expect during an Akashic reading? I encourage my clients to come prepared with an issue to be worked on, or questions they would like answered. These readings

into the Akasha

are the most powerful and healing when they are fully engaged.

I open the readings with a meditation and a prayer. I start with visualization that guides us both to the “same page” energetically. I then say a prayer of intention that opens us up to the sacred energy of the Akasha. What happens when the Akashic energy opens up? When we open to the records, we enter an energetic place that is very much like a hall of records, containing history, contracts, disappointments, healing, and the potential, or the plan, for our spirits and souls. It is exciting to take people to a place where they begin to see themselves from the point of view of their soul. The information that comes out in a reading steers us away from our “should be’s” and old expectations, towards information

that opens up our perspective and gives us tools to make healthy and informed choices in our lives.

Nancy’s goal is to help people and show them the things that often go unseen. Through Nancy’s spiritual connections, she is able to perform a mediumship reading and show a likeness of the communicator in a spirit drawing with pencil and pastel on paper. www.angelscapes.net

Spiritual development

Like so many mediums I have always "known" on some level that I had a gift. The challenge was opening up to it and truly taking ownership of it. My true awakening (as I like to call it) happened three years ago while walking the beach one winter morning. I felt like I was surrounded by thousands of people. I heard “look up” and I saw a beautiful angelic face in the sky. After that day I started asking for guidance and signs, and within what felt like moments, I would have it! After plenty of initial, I began listening to and trusting what I was sensing. This is how my Angelic Photography began. I would be given a message to look up and take a picture. Every time I did, there in the clouds was the clear shape of an Angel, a rainbow, a heart and much more. I kept the photos to myself for some time as I was sure there would be people who doubted what I was experiencing. But over time, I became less sensitive to worrying about what others would think and

realized that even if my pictures could give hope or peace to just a few people, I had an obligation to share them. My hope is that they will help others realize that help and 28

guidance is all around us; we only need to look for it and be open to it. Two years ago on a summer day I was playing with my three adorable children in the pool. All of a sudden I felt really sick. I knew something was wrong. I ran into the house and the phone was ringing. It was my brother’s girlfriend. She told me my oldest brother had just been in a horrible motorcycle accident and was being rushed to the hospital. I was in sheer panic. I ran outside, begged for a sign that my brother was going to be ok. Within seconds I saw the image of Mother Mary in the sky. I was overjoyed jumping up and down. I ran in the house, grabbed my camera and started taking photos. I know without a doubt that angels are with us and that my soul’s journey is to help people connect to the divine. As another example, on Mother’s Day in 2010 I asked to see a sign that I was indeed hearing spirit as a way to help give me some validation and alleviate my self doubt. I kept hearing the name Helena over and over again. She said she was my

guardian angel -the angel of truth. I had my blackberry in my hand just waiting to see something so I could take a photo. All of a sudden the clouds parted near the sun and there she was, Helena. She is wearing a crown and has beautiful long hair. This photo is black & white but I know what she looks like because I have seen her many times during my meditations. It was

a beautiful sunny day and yet the photo came out black and white (I think so I could see her image more clearly). I have hundreds of spirit photos that I have taken over the years - signs from the angels, my guides and my loved ones. My father passed away in 2000 of a heart attack. I did not get to spend a lot of time with my father as a child. We only saw each other a few times a year. When he passed I had a lot of anger because I felt like I never really got to know him. Two years ago, I heard him asking me to drive to my old house in Plymouth where I grew up. He told me that I would know it was him because the mileage on my car would say 44.4 miles. 444 is my favorite number. He asked me to stand in front of my old house and to let go of everything in my past

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

that was holding me back. He said I needed to let go and forgive. He told me to then look up. I saw a beautiful angel. She is the angel of forgiveness. My father and I have grown so much closer since he has been in spirit. He has helped me overcome so many things and he is constantly reminding me that he is with me and that I am truly never alone. I cherish the relationship I have with him now and I am so blessed to have the ability to connect to him in spirit. I decided to get my Reiki Level I & II certification as well as my Advanced Level Intergrated Energy Therapy certification. I wanted to be able to connect to the divine energies to help others heal. Often, when conducting a Reiki healing session, I will receive a message from a loved one or guide for the client I’m with and I will pass the message on to him/her. For a long time, I lived in fear of being judged and was scared to share my gifts with anyone. But I found out that my gift runs in the family, which has helped me to realize that it is something I should be proud of and not fear. I am here to help others heal, and I will no longer hide who I really am. I offer private or public Angelic Photography shows at JLJ Healing & Wellness Center in Cohasset as well as at other centers on the South Shore. My goal is to get people to be open to receiving signs and to look all around for the messages from our Angels, guides and loved ones. I am in the process of writing a book that will have all my angelic/ spirit photos in it. I am looking forward to sharing my photos with the world and hope that people will start capturing photos of their own.

Heather Keay offers alternative healing therapies at her practice in Cohasset, Massachusetts. She is a Level I and II certified Reiki practitioner, an Advanced Integrated Energy Therapy (IET) healer, spirit photographer, and a medium.

Herbal Remedies

We asked Stephen Brown, herbalist and owner of Great Cape Herbs, to share with us some remedies that we can make at home to protect ourselves from these often-debilitating spring/ summer conditions.

ALLERGIES Key herbs in settling allergies are nettle and Chinese Scullcap, also known as Baical Skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis). And don’t forget freshly-ground flax seed. Pill-form products containing Quercitin and Bromelain can also be added to your protocol. POISON IVY Native Americans used Native-American plants Sweetfern (Comptonia asplenifolia), and Jewelweed (Impatiens capensis). Jewelweed is extremely succulent and

can be crushed with the fingers and applied topically to the Poison Ivy. Sweetfern can be used as a wash after brewing a strong infusion. LYME DISEASE Stephen Buhner’s protocol in “Healing Lyme with Herbs” (Chelsea Green Publishing) uses the non-native invasive Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum). Instead of a curse, it can be a blessing, because it is possibly the BEST plant for treating Lyme, and is available everywhere in the great Northeast. Just dig it up (for free) and make either a strong decoction, or a tincture, of the Resveratrol-rich, orangecolored roots.

high and responsible for my growing muffintop. My thyroid was borderline, making me depressed and causing my hair to fall out. My estrogen was too high, very common after 35, and that made it hard to lose weight or want to love up my husband. It took me 3 months to turn the ship around, but when I did, I felt like myself again – happy, free, and curious about the world instead of angry and resentful. Then I started my own integrative medicine practice, and offered my new approach to women, and well . . . it’s been wildly successful. I’ve applied this approach—which I now call The Gottfried Protocol, a progressive, 3-Step natural solution to the top 7 hormonal imbalances that women face – to more than 10,000 women in the past 10 years. Women are hungry for natural treatments and fresh approaches. Q. What’s the top problem modern women face? A. We face a silent epidemic of overwhelm – we’re cranky, fat, and have no sex drive because stress has hijacked our hormone balance. Most women run task-to-task and don’t realize how the main stress hormone – cortisol – is depleting the happy brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine, pulling your other hormones offline, accelerating the aging process, and setting you up for memory problems and perhaps Alzheimer’s disease. Yet cortisol is a completely tangible hormone that you can manage like you would train a puppy or track your 401K.

Q. What is so unique about your new book, The Hormone Cure? A. I apply a science-based correction for hormonal balance for women in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Rather than randomly seeking every possible cause for a hormonal problem, we identify the small changes that will have the largest impact. Each woman has unique needs, and I meet those needs using whatever it takes: science, nutrition, botanical remedies, ancient methodology, bioidentical hormones. I believe that weight gain, mood swings, fatigue, and low libido aren’t diseases that can be “cured” with a quick . . . we’re cranky, fat, and have no sex drive because stress has hijacked our hormone balance. injection or a pharmaceutical. This is a huge wakeup call. For 57 years, the mainstream medical community had been prescribing synthetic hormones before knowing the real effect on women’s health. Q. Why are hormones so important to a woman’s overall health? A. It’s not fair, but it’s a fact: Women are much more vulnerable to hormonal imbalance than men. Hormonal problems are the top reason I find for accelerated aging. Hormones are chemical messengers, like snail mail in the body. They influence behavior, emotion, brain chemicals, the immune system, and how you turn food into fuel. When your hormones are in balance, neither too high nor too low, you look and feel your best. But when

Heart of Reiki

TM

they are imbalanced, they become the mean girls in high school, making your life miserable. You can feel lethargic, irritable, weepy, grumpy, unappreciated, anxious, and depressed. Q. What role does stress play on a woman’s hormones? A. According to national polls, women feel more stressed than men: 25 percent of women in the United States are on a pill for anxiety, depression or just feeling unable to cope compared to 15 percent of men. Clearly, our ways of dealing with stress are not working for us, and by the way, antidepressants commonly cause more problems than they fix – they’re linked to weight gain, low sex drive, loss of orgasm, and breast cancer. After 40, we’re wired to be seekers, free of domestic responsibility, but so many of us had kids later in life. No wonder we feel frustrated and burdened by the householder’s to-do list. Stress relief is essential for more than high or low coritsol. That’s why I put a big focus on ways for harried women to reduce stress. I want you to prevent the potential crash of your health because of stress. Q. Why aren’t more doctors speaking about this problem? A. As a gynecologist and a woman, I’m fully aware of how women are exquisitely vulnerable to the downstream damage of stress. But in conventional medicine, we’re taught that hormones are unreliable and not to be tracked. I’m here to tell you that is just not true. Like thousands of other continued on next page . . .

This phenomenon — known as Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD — is likely caused by a variety of interacting factors, including pathogens, loss of habitat and increased exposure to systemic and other pesticides. Policymakers have yet to make pollinator health a top priority, and current regulations don't provide adequate protection for bees. But a groundswell of concerned citizens, gardeners and beekeepers is building to protect bees. Protect bees from pesticides. Pesticides kill beneficial insects

obstetricians, gynecologists, internists, and family-practice physicians, I had been doling out the wrong advice. I love mainstream or allopathic medicine—I’m board-certified in it, and many of my closest friends are mainstream physicians. But there are certain problems that allopathic doctors are not educated to treat, especially problems related to stress and hormone imbalance in women.

Fast-Tracked Disability Process now covers 200 new Medical Conditions

by Kristen Alberino

With the addition of

35 new Compassionate Allowances conditions involving cancers and rare diseases, there are now a total of 200

disabling conditions that qualify for Social Security’s expedited disability process. The Compassionate Allowances initiative fast-tracks disability decisions to ensure that Americans with the most serious disabilities receive their benefit decisions within days instead of months or years. In addition to increasing the list of eligible conditions, the agency has

achieved another milestone. Since October 2008, nearly 200,000 people with severe disabilities nationwide have been quickly approved using the expedited process. Compassionate Allowances allow us to quickly identify diseases and other medical conditions that, by definition, meet Social Security’s standards for disability benefits. These conditions primarily include certain cancers, adult brain disorders, and a number of rare disorders that affect children. Compassionate Allowances permit Social Security to target the most clearly disabled individuals for medical approvals based on objective medical information that we can obtain quickly. Using the Compassionate Allowances criteria, most cases can be medically approved in less than two weeks. Compassionate Allowances conditions are added as a result of information received at public outreach hearings,

comments from the Social Security and Disability Determination Service communities, input from medical and scientific experts, and research from the National Institutes of Health. We also consider which conditions are most likely to meet our current definition of disability. For more information about Compassionate Allowances, including a full list of qualifying conditions, please visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ compassionateallowances. CHINESE MEDICINE

Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine for

Treatment of Thyroid Disorders

by Marcie Griffith

The thyroid gland is the largest endocrine gland in the body. When functioning optimally, this butterflyshaped gland in the neck secretes just the right amount of thyroid hormone to regulate most metabolic processes in the body. Thyroid hormones control how quickly the body uses energy, the production of proteins, blood calcium levels, and how sensitive the body is to other hormones. Even slight changes in thyroid hormone levels can cause drastic changes to energy, weight, and mental functioning. Problems with the

thyroid gland are either related to the overproduction of thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or underproduction (hypothyroidism). From a Chinese medicine perspective, thyroid disorders are an imbalance in the yang energy of the body. The yang energy (represented by the white part of the yin/yang symbol) represents the hot, active, expansive, fiery parts of ourselves. Hyperthyroidism is a revving up of the system, which shows an excess of yang energy. Hypothyroid, on the other hand, is a manifestation of a weakness in the yang energy – causing

that they could keep selling the seeds until the studies were complete. The USDA granted Monsanto's wish, and GE sugarbeets have been on the market ever since. So, the context for this new legislation is a regulatory system that already prioritizes the quick approval of new GE technology over any potential concerns — like public health or the livelihoods of farmers who aren't buying what Monsanto and Dow are selling. It seems ridiculous that Congress would require the USDA to be even more hasty in approving seeds for market.

cold and a slowing down of the body’s systems. Acupuncture and herbs help to either nourish the yang energy (for hypothyroid) or sedate the yang energy (for hyperthyroid). Acupuncture and herbal treatment also focuses on restoring balance to the body’s hormonal, metabolic, and psychological systems. Treatment is highly individualized and can focus on alleviating problems with sleep, mood, digestion, menstrual cycles, temperature regulation, heart-rate, and energy levels, depending on what is most problematic. There are also certain points that regulate hormone levels directly, so treatment can focus on both the root cause and the manifestations simultaneously. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can be a very useful complementary therapy for thyroid issues, and under the guidance of your doctor, can reduce the chance of surgery or the necessary dose of medication. Not over. The biotech rider, like the rest of the short-term funding bill, is only law for the next six months. But you can bet that the Big 6 have plans to make these changes permanent. Unlike in other countries, the U.S. process for approving new GE crops is swift and easy. Monsanto and company want to keep it that way. Yet the battle over GE regulation is very much alive in this country — look at the proposed GE labeling bills popping up in dozens of states, coalitions of farmers opposing new dicamba-resistant crops, and all the buzz around this rider. What do you think our regulatory system for GE crops and pesticides should look like? Instead of special treatment for the Big 6, let's demand real improvements in our food system, like finally updating farmworker protection standards and funding beginning farmers and local food production.

Dowsing is the ability to take a tool, such as a Pendulum or L-Rods and tap into the energies that exist all around us. It's is a direct connection with Spirit or your Higher Self. Tapping into these energies allows us to ask questions, locate water, find lost objects or balance our chakras and energy fields. And so much more!

Pendulums are best used indoors where there is no wind to affect the movement. They can be used to ask questions, define answers on a chart, show the energy of a chakra or test for imbalances in a persons energy fields.

Pauline Pearson a Dowser with over 10 years experience describes the tools most used with dowsing.

Y-RODS Y-rods are known as the original dowsing tool. Traditionally made from a branch of a willow or cherry tree, the branch is in the shape of a "Y". While holding the Y-Rod and walking forward, the rod will react to a strong pull toward the ground when water or an object that is underground is found. The dowser will make the request of what he is looking for at the beginning and the rod will react when the water or object is found.

PENDULUMS A pendulum is any weighted object on a string or chain. Pendulums can be made of beautiful crystals, metal or wood, or can be a paper clip on a string. A necklace such as a pendant on a chain can also be used.

L-RODS L-Rods are L shaped pieces of copper, brass or wire. A set of L-Rods can also be made from a wire coat hanger. They can be different lengths, but a traditional size is 6" X 12". The handle part can also have a "sleeve" over it which brings more sensitivity to the reaction of the rods. L-Rods will open or close in reaction to the edges of energy fields, such as the auric fields around our physical bodies. They are most widely used to find underground water for digging wells etc. The rods will react to the energy that is being emitted from the water. As with the pendulum, they can also be used to ask questions and are also often used to find lost objects. They are a better tool for using outdoors since the dowser can have more control of the rods on a windy day. ASKING PERMISSION When you dowse for your yourself and especially for another person it is important to ask for permission to do so.

The standard permission statement is "May I, Can I, Should I" "May I"- asks "Do I have permission from Spirit to dowse for this person or situation at this time". When you dowse, it's important that you are rested, healthy, not emotionally attached to the outcome, and able to do so without interruptions. "Can I"- asks "Do I have the skill level to dowse this situation". Dowsing takes practice and can be used in many situations. However, it's important to know that you have the skill level for what you are dowsing. For example, a beginner dowser does not have the understanding of the details involved to dowse for water to dig a well. "Should I" - asks "Is this any of my business". It's very natural, for instance, to want to help a person if they are sick or going through a difficult situation. However, it may be that whatever this person is going through at the time could be a life lesson for them. If that is the case, you don't want to interfere with that. What is Dowsing?

When I Am

An Old Woman... by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick the flowers in other people's gardens And learn to spit You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausages at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple. Taken from the book When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple Edited by Sandra Martz Papier Mache Press – Watsonville, California 1987
