BHBN LAUNCHES NEW DRAMA ‘THE GARDENING TIMES’, A LIGHT HEARTED LOOK AT GARDENING THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS

I

n March 2020, with the universal closure of theatres throughout the UK, the theatre company, Natura Contemporary Theatre, responded by asking themselves what could they do to help others during these challenging times? Caroline Summerfield, their resident playwright and artistic director, came up with the idea of responding to some of those most in need, the patients and staff in our NHS hospitals. Aware of the delight and enjoyment which theatre offers audiences, she decided that it would be a wonderful idea to create radio theatre for hospitals. An alumnus of the University of Birmingham, where Caroline had studied playwriting for her postgraduate degree, she chose to support the six NHS hospitals in Birmingham. There then followed an approach to the technical director and vice-chair of the Birmingham Hospital Broadcasting Network (BHBN), David Horton, with the offer of a whimsical radio drama, inspired by gardening. A sample script for The Gardening Times followed and with an immediate and enthusiastic response from BHBN, then twenty episodes were requested. By this stage, Caroline knew that her theatre company would require funding in order to produce the radio drama on the scale required and to do so complying with the remote working challenges presented by COVID-19.

With Birmingham-based BBC Radio Drama actress, Ellie Darvill, also now on board, together with The Reactor Factory to record the radio drama - all that was now needed was some financial support to make it all happen. A timely approach was then made to Arts Council England who had just re-launched their National Lottery Projects Grant Scheme and with the support of BHBN, as a gold award winning hospital radio station, the Natura Contemporary Theatre were able to secure funding and go ahead in September 2020 with this worthwhile project. Co-written by the Summerfield Sisters, Caroline and Angela Summerfield, The Gardening Times follows ‘the Lady of the House’ as she seeks to create a garden in North Gloucestershire (where Angela and Caroline live), assisted by her Head-gardener, Under-gardener and Hewho-cuts-the grass. Each themed episode, addresses with delightful humour the practical aspects of gardening. Broadcasted daily on weekdays at 10.40. a.m. by BHBN, you can listen via their website, or download their APP. As for their experience of working with BHBN, Natura Contemporary Theatre have so enjoyed themselves, that in December this year they will be producing for BHBN, a very special comedy drama for Christmas, suitable for all ages Myself And Other Parts. Without revealing the plot, this radio play will include Father Christmas and his helpers, so expect lots more laughter and fun when you tune in to listen.

YOUR LOCAL HOSPITAL CHARITY TAKE PART IN OUR FESTIVE XMAS JUMPER DAY ON FRiDAY 11th DECEMBER!

HELP TO BRING CHRISTMAS TO OUR PATIENTS

U

niversity Hospitals Birmingham Charity is proud to support staff and patients across the West Midlands, funding cutting-edge equipment, world-leading research and ‘added extras’ to make the hospital experience a little easier for the two million patients who are treated across University Hospitals Birmingham each year. This Christmas, UHB Charity is asking for your support to help bring a little festive cheer to the hospitals. It is never easy being in hospital over Christmas, but this year will be particularly hard for our patients as they are unlikely to be able to have a visit from their loved ones. That’s why we have funded iPads for our wards, to allow patients to speak with their families via video call.

There are so many ways that you can get involved in making a difference to the patients and staff across University Hospitals Birmingham this Christmas.

6

You could help us to cheer our patients up this Christmas and help us to fund festive hampers for our hardworking staff to share with their patients on Christmas Day. Or, another easy way is to buy your Christmas cards from UHB Charity! We have a selection of fun and traditional cards available for you to buy from our website. Just go to hospitalcharity.org/ shop to find out more. Get ten cards and envelopes for £3.99 including free P&P. Or, how about a fun way to get involved this Christmas by taking part in a Festive Jumper Day on Friday 11 December. Wear your best (or worst!) Christmas knitwear and donate £1 to UHB Charity. Whilst you might not be able to show off your jumper in front of the whole office, you can show off your clothing on your morning video call instead. Why not turn it into a competition? Find out how you can make a donation by visiting our website at www.hospitalcharity. org or finding us on social media by searching for @UHBCharity. This year, more than ever, your support will help to make a huge difference to our patients and staff.

QUEEN ELIZABETH HO

HOME OF B

B

HBNradio was founded in 1952 by Hon. Alderman Mrs Freda Cocks OBE as the Birmingham Hospital Commentaries Association (BHCA). BHBN became the BHBA in 1955 and BHBN in 1972. Its recent broadcast name of BHBN HOSPITAL RADIO was adopted in 2006 and changed to BHBNradio this year in 2020. Nationally, hospital radio first started life in York in 1926. The Network was a pioneer in many aspects of its broadcasting: time spent in hospital back in the Network’s early days was very different to the present, where day case surgery is common. During the 50s & 60s, a two-week stay in hospital was more the average for even a routine procedure. This gave the then stations volunteers the opportunity to foster long-term relationships with patients. The first studio was at the rear of the New Inns Public house on the Moseley Road, providing live football commentaries of local teams to patients in Yardley Green Sanatorium, and as the service successfully expanded, it moved home quite a few times before finally settling at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, in Edgbaston, from 1966. We still serve the Heartlands

Hospital to this day, as it is now part of the Heart of England Foundation NHS Trust. It was at Edgbaston that the Network really found its place within the Birmingham hospital community, and where it became a familiar sound around the wards – popular with patients, staff and relatives. The Network was first formally registered as a Charity in 1962, and was incorporated as a Limited Company in 1981. After a long and happy period at Edgbaston, in 1988 Warwickshire County Cricket Club decided to authorise redevelopment at the County Ground. So the Network relocated once more in 1989 to studios based at the City Hospital, on Dudley Road, with an impressive studio complex. This enabled us, in another historic first, to become the first UK hospital radio station to introduce continuous 24 hours a day broadcasting in September 1994. We remain at the forefront of UK and European hospital radio with a number of awards to our credit, including the inaugural Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards National Winner in 1990.

BHBNradio These awards are judged by a range of radio industry professionals and healthcare staff. A new chapter in the history of the Network got underway in July 2012, when the new BHBN studios opened for business. Bill Waldron became the first presenter to broadcast live from these studios on the site of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham: A state of the art, multimedia broadcasting centre at the site of Birmingham’s first new acute hospital for 70 years. After more than sixty years, the Network continues to broadcast a wide range of programmes that include interviews, local news items, sport, and – of course – the backbone to any hospital radio station’s output, patients’ musical requests. When asked to reflect on the history of the Network, Freda Cocks remarked that what pleased her most is that the enthusiasm with which the Network began has never faded. Hospital radio’s national body, the Hospital Broadcasting Association, have openly acknowledged the quality of our work and presented us with a commemorative 60 year award in 2012 to mark this historic achievement. The Network has undoubtedly gone from

strength to strength and, although run entirely by volunteers, is still acknowledged as providing as professional service as any radio station in the West Midlands County. During its long history BHBN has developed numerous media and broadcast personalities, including “Voice of the Balls” Alan Dedicoat, local radio presenters Phil Upton, Jennie Wilkes, Tom Ross, & Paul Franks, and many other broadcasting professionals including our most recent success with Miranda Burns, who now works for Capital FM. As well as our success nationally, the tireless work of our volunteers has also been recognised a little closer to home too. We won the bronze award at the Building Healthier Lives Awards, run by the UHB NHS Trust, in the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year category. And to continue on our winning streak, we are proud to announce we won the following awards at the HBA National Hospital Radio Awards, 2020:

TOP TIPS WHEN YOU’RE DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL

C

oming into hospital can be a daunting experience and we understand that for most patients and family members it can be a very anxious time.

So, we will look after you and make it as stress free as we can. During your admission, the doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and physiotherapists will monitor your progress and recovery on a daily basis. The decision that you are well enough to leave hospital may came at very short notice, so it is important to discuss any discharge concerns you may have with the team as soon as you are able to and be as prepared and ready when the time comes. Things to think about are how you will get home or where you might be staying or who with while you recover. You might be feeling much better when it comes to leaving hospital, but all the daily domestic tasks you did without any difficulty before hospital, could well be impossible until you are feeling fit and well again – so maybe you will have to enlist some help ahead of time? For the majority, the discharge process will be fairly straightforward. Once you are informed that you are ready to leave hospital you can telephone your relatives, or friends and carers to collect you that day.

summary, which will be sent to your GP to inform them of what has occurred during your stay. Don’t be afraid of asking staff to go through the care plan again and explain anything you might not understand or is unclear. We would rather you asked and were completely clear before you got home, especially about medication which is so important. • You might be able to be discharged straight to your own home. • Some patients have more complex needs and may require further inpatient care in a community hospital. • Others might need social care support at home which may include carers who assist with washing, dressing and toileting – this is known as a package of care. • While others may need short-term physio or occupational therapy input in their home or in a care home. This is known as intermediate care. • A few may need a placement in a residential or nursing home setting. The hospital discharge coordinator assigned to your ward and the hospital Complex Discharge Team (consisting of nurses and social workers) will organise these alternative different ways of being discharged. Also, don’t forget to ensure you or your family or carers know who to call if you need help, will it be the hospital ward or your GP?

You will be provided with a supply of any new medication and information, called a care plan

RECIPE Tasty Butter Chicken

Sponsored by

69 High Street, Harborne, Birmingham, B17 9NS T: 0121 426 4440 W: www.tiffinharborne.co.uk

FOR THE MARINADE

Butter Chicken (Murgh Makhani) is one of the most popular curries in the world and yet happens to be one of the easiest! No hunting down hard to find ingredients, this is a Chef recipe that makes the most incredible curry sauce.

1/2 cup plain yoghurt, full fat 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp tumeric powder 2 tsp garam masala 1/2 tsp chilli powder or cayenne pepper powder 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tbsp ginger, freshly grated 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1.5 lb / 750 g chicken thigh fillets, cut into bite size pieces FOR THE CURRY 2 tbsp (30 g) ghee or butter or, 1 tbsp vegetable oil 1 cup tomato passata or, tomato puree 1 cup heavy / thickened cream 1 tbsp sugar 1 1/4 tsp salt

Method: Optional blitz: For an extra smooth sauce, combine the Marinade ingredients (except the chicken) in a food processor and blend until smooth, although best to keep rustic. 1, Combine the Marinade ingredients with the chicken in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate overnight, or up to 24 hours (minimum 3 hrs). 2, Heat the ghee (butter or oil) over high heat in a large fry pan. Take the chicken out of the Marinade but do not wipe or shake off the marinade from the chicken (but don’t pour the Marinade left in the bowl into the fry pan). 16

3, Place chicken in the fry pan and cook for around 3 minutes, or until the chicken is white all over (it doesn’t really brown because of the Marinade). 4, Now to make the sauce: Add the tomato passata, cream, sugar and salt. Turn down to low and simmer for 20 minutes. Do a taste test to see if it needs more salt. 5, Garnish with coriander leaves if using. and serve with basmati rice and either naan or flatbread and papadums. If you would like your recipe to appear in The Heartbeat Magazine then contact our team today on 01908 889499 or, email: info@theheartbeatmagazine.co.uk

BHBN Radio | Autumn 2020

An insight into

BHBN Sport, Saturdays from 14:00

B

HBN Radio is the only station that will bring you full match commentaries straight to Birmingham hospital patients’ bedside media units.

BHBN Sport brings you every moment of passion, controversy and sporting drama, as we follow Aston Villa, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion across the football season, with live commentary of every home game. We are also proud to deliver commentary for sight-impaired supporters at St Andrew’s. Our top team of commentators and pundits will keep you going on a Saturday afternoon with your fix of fixtures and the very best sporting analysis, action and reaction, as the biggest games unfurl before our eyes and your ears. Alongside live updates from Villa Park, St Andrews and The Hawthorns we provide regular reports from the cricket team Birmingham Bears playing T20 at Edgbaston, plus we bring you the latest on our neighbouring top-flight rugby side Worcester Warriors.

We pride ourselves on going out and about to the biggest sporting events in Birmingham. We were there when the international athletics circus came to the Alexander Stadium – including British stars such as Dina Asher-Smith and Greg Rutherford, plus four sub-10 second men’s 100m runners. We were there at the Edgbaston Priory international tennis tournament in the runup to Wimbledon. And we were also there when the British Transplant Games came to town in August 2018. This four-day sporting extravaganza saw hundreds of athletes that had received, or donated organs descend on Birmingham. We were there with kick by kick commentary for the 2020 EFL Cup Final when Aston Villa came up against the Premiership Champions Manchester City. Through thick and thin we follow our local teams - from the lows of relegation too the highs of trips to Wembley Stadium you can be rest assured the volunteers we have in the sport team will keep you abreast of everything going on. Like what you hear? Then get involved! Join the conversation on Twitter @BHBNSport, or join the team at sport@bhbn.net

If we can bring you the latest from your team on a Saturday, we will – call the studio on 0121 471 4774 and we’ll keep you covered!
