“Gilbert supports our community and makes the buying process easy. There is no reason to buy anywhere else."
Born and raised in Washington DC, Chris moved to Okeechobee in 1992. He came to Okeechobee in search of family and found a community that welcomed him. He felt so welcomed, he decided to put down roots. Chris joined the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office in 1994. In addition to his law enforcement certifications, he holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice and Bachelors of Science in Administration. The combination of this education proves valuable when serving and protecting the citizens of Okeechobee. When not in his patrol car, you can find him volunteering with the Fraternal Order of Police or on the range honing his skills. Friend and co-worker, Corporal Michael Hazellief, describes him as, "a consummate professional. He brings a common sense approach to law enforcement while maintaining a very high level of professionalism."
Thank you for your service to Okeechobee, Sergeant Hans.

PUBLISHER
year in our sunshine state I’m always looking forward to spring. I’ve planted all my outside flowerpots with gorgeous spring flowers. Finley Grace helps her GiGi keep them watered daily when she comes to work. Yes, sometimes the office turns into a daycare, as some of you know when you call. I’m blessed to be able to work from my home office with my daughter, Jessica and I love being able to share with all of you what the Heartland has to offer to our communities. Every time I run into someone while out shopping, at lunch or dinner at one of our local restaurants or at an event I love hearing your ideas of what you would like to see in the magazine and really appreciate your compliments. I thank you for all your support.

I’m excited to say I took the challenge from our last issue of planting my very first garden. My son Jake built me a couple garden boxes off the ground because living in the country means I have a few critters that will probably be a problem. I’m going to take the advice of the article and start small with my first one. Stay tuned until next issue and I’ll let you know if I have a green thumb. It’s such an honor to be able to bring you a variety of topics that show the unique diversity of the Heartland. Hope you enjoy the feature stories our writers and photographers have captured from agriculture, music festivals, Top Buttons from Lakeland helping our young women create a brighter future and lastly our amazing wedding section helping all you bride and grooms plan your Perfect Florida Wedding. We are always growing and proud to have Carson Griffin join our team as one of our feature writers. Carson did an amazing job working with Sarah Powers, CEO of Top Buttons and when you read the story you will see with her research why this story pulled at her heartstrings. I hope you all enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed creating it for you. As always, we thank you, our readers for supporting Heartland LIVING. I encourage you to dine, shop and explore local to support small businesses and the economy in your community because when we support and love each other, it creates a better place for all of us.
God Bless,

For five hundred years cattle have been in Florida, and their presence has shaped much of the area's growth and economic vitality. From the first Iberian cattle brought here by Juan Ponce De Leon to the modern-day cowboy, the beef industry has played a significant part in our state's history and created a way of life that still prevails. „

“F
rom cow-calf operations to dairy farms, the cattle industry is a backbone for Florida's interior communities and has been for generations,” said Senator Denise Grimsley (District 26), a fifth-generation Floridian who grew up with her family in both the citrus and cattle industries. “I count it a privilege to have grown up in an area where ranching is prevalent....These days, I am proud to watch my own grandchildren discovering the responsibility that comes with raising cows.” The agriculture industry is second to only tourism in Florida, with cattle and its related businesses providing around 32,000 jobs and adding nearly $2 billion to the economy each year. “As Florida grows, we have to do more to educate our fellow citizens about this vital industry and the critical cornerstone farmers and ranchers play in the economy. Florida cattlemen are using cutting edge science and best practices as we deliver quality beef in the marketplace and resourceful stewardship of the land,” Grimsley emphasized.

And educating the public is exactly what award-winning filmmakers Elam Stoltzfus and his son, Nic, have done as they celebrate through oral and written history the rich, pioneer heritage of the Florida rancher in their documentary and companion coffee table book Great Florida Cattle Drive: Unbroken Circles. Sponsored in part by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the hour-long film takes viewers on a step back in time as they followed a 2016 weeklong reenactment of an 1800s cattle drive, herding 500 head of Florida Cracker cattle along a 50-mile trek from the Whaley Ranch near St. Cloud to the Silver Spurs Arena in Kenansville.

F
or Elam Stoltzfus, the cattle drive was reminiscent of his childhood on an Amish farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where transportation meant riding his horse. After adopting Florida as his home state 34 years ago, the Emmy award-winning cinematographer sought to capture in film the wild beauty of the state's natural landscape. “For me, things have come full circle: I'm back in the saddle riding the trails, making memories, and making sure the circle will be unbroken,” stated Elam. Stoltzfus' Live Oak Production Group has presented a vibrant look at the 'other' Florida, a world diversely different than the coastal beaches and amusement parks most associate with the Sunshine State. The Florida they have revealed is the rugged life of cowboys known as 'cow hunters' working in sweltering heat, through blinding dust, wrangling cattle from horseback much like it was done hundreds of years ago. This “living history” premiered in February with tour viewings and on PBS stations across the state (www.GreatFloridaCattleDrive.com). “We wanted to tell their story, and we wanted to get it right,” said Nic, the documentary's screenwriter and co-producer as well as the author of the three-part book that explores Florida's cow-culture, history and the making of the documentary. Its 132 pages are richly illustrated with 150 full-color and historical images. In the foreword to Great Florida Cattle Drive: Unbroken Circles, Patrick Smith, Jr. recalled his own father's beloved story, A Land Remembered, and pointed out that the American cowboy originated in Florida, where they faced harsh landscapes, mosquitoes, snakes, and alligators. He described pioneer cattlemen called “Florida Crackers,” whose name was probably derived from the cracking sounds made by their leather whips. Of the cattle drive, Smith wrote, “Today we don't have to fell trees, clear land, make lumber, or build cabins with our bare hands.... However, we can begin to appreciate aspects of the life of early cowboys by experiencing it first hand through historical reenactments.”

T
he first Great Florida Cattle Drive was organized in 1995 by the Florida Cow Culture Preservation Committee to honor Florida's 150 years of statehood, explained committee chairman Doyle Conner, Jr. A senior clerk for the FDAC Division of Animal Industry, he has worked for the Department of Agriculture for 25 years. Conner, whose father was the state's Agricultural Commissioner from 1961 to 1991, is renowned as a Florida historian, cowboy poet, singer, auctioneer, and storyteller. Since that first reenactment, the Committee has held events every decade, with a second drive in 2006 and the third taking place last year from January 23rd-30th. “We are going to do another one in 2021 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the first cattle to come to Florida,” said Conner, who was the associate producer and a source of historical data for the documentary. Unrelenting rain made the 2016 cattle drive uncomfortably realistic for the 450 participants who slept in primitive tents, ate from chuck wagons, and warmed themselves by campfires while being regaled with tales of the state's cow-culture. And like many historical accounts, the story of Florida's cattle is filled with wars, hardship, abandonment, Indians, and even Spanish gold.

C
attle first arrived in this country in 1521 when Ponce de Leon sailed from Puerto Rico with 200 settlers and livestock, landing in Punta Rassa near Charlotte Harbor on Florida's West Coast. During a battle with Calusa Indians, Ponce de Leon was shot by a poison-tipped arrow, an injury he died from as the settler's escaped to Cuba. In 1565, Spain was able to successfully colonized St. Augustine, again bringing the hardy, long-horned Iberian cattle that thrived well amongst Florida's pinewoods, prairies, scrubs, and cypress swamps. “The cattle industry in Florida was America's first industry. By the late 1500s we were shipping cattle throughout the Caribbean,” Conner said. During the early 1700s, English colonist and their Indian allies attacked Spanish villagers and ranchers who fled, abandoning their livestock. Herds that would come to be known as Florida Cracker Cattle roamed wild for over a hundred years. The Seminole Indians played an important role in reestablishing Florida's cattle industry. For a century they peacefully raised and sold livestock. In 1775, their Paynes Prairie herd numbered between 7,000 and 10,000. But the Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced the tribes and their herds to remain mobile to avoid relocation. Disputes with homesteaders over cattle and grazing land spurred the Second(1835-1842) and Third(18551858) Seminole Wars. But, by 1939 the Indian Livestock Association had been formed, making the way for the Seminoles to establish themselves as a leading beef producer. Florida attained statehood on March 3, 1845, but sided with the Confederacy in the Civil War. “During the war, the Federalist blockaded the ports along Florida's coast, so our cattle were going north to the Confederate Army...as soon as the war ended, we started shipping cattle again,” Conner explained. “The Southern economy was shot and paper money was worthless.” While many states struggled economically during Reconstruction, Florida became the U.S.'s largest exporter of cattle, selling
their beef to Cuba and throughout the Caribbean for gold doubloons. Florida is still a major U.S. cattle producers, ranking third east of the Mississippi. Of the top ten largest cattle herds in America, four are right here in Florida, Conner noted. Florida has about 1.72 million head of cattle spread across 21,000 farms and ranches, but breeds differ greatly from those early Cracker Cattle, a now endangered species with only 6,000 on the registry.
F
“They were just about bred out of existence.” In the late 1800s there was an influx of different breeds, like the Brahman which has the ability to sweat. Cross-breeding programs in the 192030s developed livestock more resistant to heat, diseases, and parasites like ticks and screwworms. When screwworms, a fly larva that feeds on warm-blooded animals, threatened Florida's beef in the late 1950s, veterinarians and scientists

worked to save the industry. In 1958, sterile screwworm pupae were dropped by plane on a Sebring ranch, an effective part of an eradication program that was used again last year in Monroe County after screwworms were discovered in Key Deer.
R
anching methods were also altered by the enactment of a 1949 fence law and by the loss of 1000 acres a day to development to meet the needs of the state's 21 million people. Elam Stoltzfus said that the 2016 cattle drive followed a route through Florida's Heartland that has already been obstructed by the building of new subdivisions. “Most places in the United States aren't under the pressures we are with population growth, and in the very near future water is going to become a big issue,” Conner cautioned. Cooperative efforts have been made by the Florida government, nongovernmental agencies, and land owners to set aside easements that could protect our state's vital water and wildlife while preserving ranchers' rights to use that land for grazing.

“R
anching is important because of the amount of food that is produced by ranchers, their contribution to the environment, and the preservation of our beautiful ranch lands,” said Wauchula rancher Doyle Carlton III, a seventh-generation Floridian whose family has been in the cattle industry since the mid-1800s. “My dad set a great example for stewardship and being able to develop the land to increase productivity without diminishing the environment. He believed in keeping a balance between the ranching operation and wildlife.” Carlton's father, who taught him the value of ranching and hard work, was a Florida Senator for 10 years; his grandfather was Governor(1929-33). Doyle and his wife, Debbie Hansel Carlton, operate Roman III Ranches along with their children, Dale and Millie, and their grandchildren. Now, seven generations have ranched the properties that span across Hardee, Highlands and DeSoto Counties. “Fortunately, everybody in our family has embraced the profession and the lifestyle that goes with it. We feel really blessed that there has been somebody in all these generations that has seen the value in it. This is all we've ever done and wanted to do. It is an honorable profession.”

from near and far gathered for the second annual sold-out Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival. In fact, organizers stated that tickets were purchased from every continent but Antarctica with about 40 percent of tickets being sold out of the state of Florida. This festival brings some of the biggest names in the music industry but also offers an unparalleled experience for people of all walks of life. Whether it was just a weekend of camping with friends, an opportunity to celebrate through meditation and art or experiencing unique musical collaborations, there was something for everyone as they entered the portal at Sunshine Grove in Okeechobee.

his year’s event featured headliners such as Kings of Leon, Usher & The Roots, Wiz Khalifa and Bassnectar to name a few. An all-star lineup with once-in-a-lifetime collaborations joined the festival this year to set the eclectic vibe for an undiscriminating environment where self-expression is encouraged and celebrated. This festival isn’t just about the music. It’s about the quirky outfits, the unique talents, the marbled body paint and the ChobeeWobee Village where you would not only find some of the coolest, tucked away art installations, but there was plenty of great food and some very chill vendors. The areas within the village are appropriately played on the name “Okeechobee.”

he most visually appealing landmark was the Ferris Wheel located in Aquachobee which also featured a pond with a sandy beach perfect for a beach party, its own stage and entertainment. Yogachobee featured a tea garden to just relax, listen to various entertainers, yoga instructors, and healing arts. Jungle 51, which played techno, electronic music from sundown to sunrise, kept the party going for even the latest of night owls. Creative, neon light arrangements and installations illuminated the trees cluttered with rows of hammocks, making the setup of the festival a live art installation itself.

he three stages, “Be,” “Here” and “Now,” were walking distance from the campsite, each named after a different texting acronym. The campsites seemed to stretch for miles, each campsite uniquely customized and decorated. Bordered by specialty, eclectic food trucks, the stages were situated close enough to switch shows easily while avoiding any sound interference from neighboring stages. Food trucks catered to every craving, peddling goods like Hyppo ice pops, Big Island Bowl’s poke or acai bowls, espresso, Amish doughnuts, grilled cheese, seafood and tacos.

hile the festival has only just wrapped-up its second year, Soundslinger puts on a well-organized event, working out little quirks and adding authentic additions as the festival has matured. The company aims to do “everything possible to respect and cherish the natural beauty” of the 600-acre Sunshine Grove, where the event is held, by utilizing as many biodegradable, repurposed, recycled and sustainable materials as possible. The Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing and most diverse music festivals in the country. Creating a
brighter future for Young Women
By Carson Griffin Photography by Katara Simmons
g
rowing up during our new millennia is tough for young women. The constant pressure to look a certain way, be a certain way, and dress a certain way is exhausting. Especially for those who have been wounded emotionally and physically due to the many trials and tribulations life throws our way. When I was asked to write this story on Top Buttons Boutique I had no idea what I was getting myself into. After researching and talking to Sarah Powers, (CEO/Founder) this upscale thrift boutique has completely pulled at my heartstrings. „

opbuttons.org proclaims, “Top Buttons is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, charitable and educational organization building self-esteem through fashion in young women. Through their online platforms, educational events, clothing boutique, and program for teens in need, Top Buttons empowers young women with the resources they need to present their best self to the world without compromise. This brand speaks volumes and gives me chills to think about the impact it has had on our small community we call the Heartland. One inspiration that is written upon their website is, Top Buttons Boutique was designed and founded on helping young women prepare for important life events from job interviews to getting ready for their high school prom. When young ladies enter the boutique they are given a voucher of a certain amount and a personal stylist. Along with finding appropriate fashion, girls are given help with their hair and make up as well. Barely worn apparel and accessories are donated to the store to make this possible. The heart and soul of Top Buttons is Mrs. Sarah Powers. It only took a few short minutes to realize how big her heart as well as her passion for helping others. She truly is the epitome of a woman with a

giving heart. Sarah was born and raised in Lakeland, Florida. She had once left to travel and live abroad, now she resides there with her family while running Top Buttons. Sarah shared with me, “Lakeland continues to blossom with new businesses and new people collaborating with vintage Lakeland in order to do good. It is an honor to do what I can to serve our community.” arah has a background in youth ministry and social work. Her passion for those younger than her shines as she expresses, “I just love working with teens. I thought maybe I would grow out of it as I got older, but I haven’t. Also being a mom of 4, 3 of whom are girls, I have always been aware of and frustrated by the negative impact of the fashion and media industry on the developing young woman. With those factors in mind, four years ago I felt lead by God to create a platform through which we could build self-esteem, positive body image, and modesty in young women.” Sarah is not alone though, Top Buttons has several staff members who are just as passionate as Sarah who have helped Top Buttons develop into the incredible organization it is today.

op Buttons is located in downtown historic Lakeland. Not only is Top Buttons an attraction in itself, the history of where it is located makes the boutique that much more appealing. Top Buttons was previously located in Waller Lofts yet Sarah sought the need for a larger space near a strong community. The downtown community has since welcomed Top Buttons with open arms doing everything in their power to support the boutique the best way they can. Sarah shared that the surrounding businesses have collected clothing on their behalf, offered incentives to their customers along with the clothing donated, and several restaurants have discounted or even donate food for their different events they have held. The help is greatly appreciated and definitely does not go un-noticed or taken for granted. Overwhelmed by the selfless assistance, she states, “As a small and relatively new nonprofit in a city full of great long standing organizations, it is humbling to have this kind of interest and support.

Ways to donate are available on the Top Buttons website as well as more information on what they stand for along with their Wearing Confidence program the organization is apart of. Organizations enrolled in our Wearing Confidence Program include: PACE, Girls Inc., Porch Light, Heartland for Children, Boys and Girls Clubs of Lakeland and Bartow, West Area Adult School, Parker Street, and more. Each year 300 young women in need receive confidence building educational sessions, ongoing mentorship, and new wardrobes of free of proper fitting attire for work, school and every day. More than $5000 a month in services and free clothing is received by the organizations that are enrolled with the program. Also, you can donate your quality new or used clothing items at the Upscale Thrift Boutique in downtown Lakeland. op buttons eludes class and positivity. Warms my heart to know that there are individuals working selflessly and efficiently to make sure young women have the right foundation to develop a brighter future. Our community is in desperate need to maintain a positive influence among our young female generation and Top Buttons does just that.

Perfect Florida
Weddings
By Kristy Harris Photography by Caroline Maxcy Fox
Before we begin, it’s time for full disclosure,
I love weddings!
Though I have been happily married for nearly 10 years, I still keep an active Pinterest board full of ideas with the latest trends. Everything from
rings and dresses to flowers and color schemes, I have it all. Where were Pinterest and wedding guides when I was planning my wedding? „

Thankfully
for the new bride-to-be, inspiration for your upcoming wedding is everywhere you look. Let us help jump start your planning by sharing our organized guide to the perfect Florida wedding and a glimpse at the latest spring and summer wedding trends.
Color Theory Nothing sets the tone for your wedding better than your selection of colors. Pantone offers Greenery Pantone 15-0343 as the 2017 Color of the Year and what better to pair that with than the beautiful citrus palate of colors that Florida’s spring and summer offer. Pops of tangerine, rose, and peach along with fresh green tones are the perfect compliments to any Florida sunset wedding. „
Heartland LIVING April May 2017
71
In Bloom Large, soft-petal blooms such as garden roses, peonies, poppies, and tulips paired with lush greens offer up a chic “messy garden” look that brides are loving right now. Mixing in some fresh Florida oranges can enhance the citrus tone to your arrangements. For an added vintage feel, use Depression glass and mix-matched metallic antique vases and serving ware to create your centerpieces and table décor.

Vintage outdoor weddings are definitely in right now!
Setting the Mood
Don’t be afraid to use a variety of furniture such as old tables, assorted chairs, shabby-chic hutches and buffets to create a country “at home” feeling. Lounge areas are also becoming an important décor element for cocktail hour and after parties. Bringing cozy antique furniture such as sofas and loveseats outside in intimate clusters will promote gathering amongst guests. Lighting is also crucial to creating your romantic setting. Pillar candles on difference-shaped tables throughout your wedding venue paired with café lights in trees and around your mingling areas help to create an inviting experience for your guests.
Heartland LIVING April May 2017
73
Finding the perfect location for your wedding and reception can seem like a challenging task, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right décor and lighting any space can be transformed into the perfect wedding spot. Think barns, backyards with lots of oak trees, sunset views on the lake and gardens with the smell of orange blossoms in the air. With an outdoor wedding you have a blank slate; the walls of an inside venue can be restrictive and limit how much seating you can have. Open spaces allow for creativity with layout and personalization to tell your wedding story.

A Sweet Sensation A wedding cake is definitely a wedding staple and with the recent trends of dessert bars and cake pops, large tiered wedding cakes are back with a new twist! Acting as a focal point of your reception, tall cakes offer a visual interest and can allow for some creativity to best reflect your personality and wedding theme. Naked cakes are a simple yet classically clean approach to the traditional wedding cake that can be accented with fresh blooms and fruit then set a top your grandmother’s cake stand. Painted cakes are another up and coming popular new Heartland trend that is worth drooling over. With a LIVING crisp white base of frosting, the added April May 2017

You' re Invited The wedding invitation acts as a preview of the actual wedding, setting the tone for theme, venue and attire. Choosing an invitation style is important for setting the tone that you want your guests to experience while attending your wedding and giving them something to look forward to. The rising trend for wedding invitations can be summed up in one word: watercolor! From softwashes to big and bold - floral watercolor elements are perfect for your bohemian and vintage weddings. Check with local artists for custom watercolor paintings to best match your style and color scheme. Adding to the whimsical feel of the watercolor florals are simple calligraphy fonts. Mixing scrolling handwritten style fonts with bold serif fonts create a complimentary contrast of typefaces for an easy to read invitation. BONUS TIP: On your RSVP cards, add a line for “favorite song.” This way you will know what your guests want to hear and they will look forward to hearing their song at the reception!

Topping off the vintage romantic glow of any wedding is the perfect hair and makeup. Scout out a stylist that has a portfolio of work that matches your style and schedule a “trial run” of hair and make-up before the big day. Soft hairstyles such as messy fish tail braids and beachy waves are on point with the boho vibe. Soft pinks on eyelids, cheeks, and lips will pair nicely with a dewy complexion for that ideal romantic look. Instead of a traditional veil, opt for a crown of fresh tea roses and baby’s breath that is best suited for a breezing outdoor Florida wedding.

Worth a Thousand Words Last but certainly not least, choosing the right photographer is a crucial stage to planning your wedding. Much like with a stylist, scouting out a photographer will require reviewing portfolios, testimonies from other brides and discussing your wedding vision. Lots of steps have come together to plan your dream wedding, ensuring that you have the right photographer to capture all of those moments will be dollars well spent! Have a check list of photos that you want taken, you will be busy on your wedding day and discussing details ahead of time with your photographer will guarantee nothing gets forgotten. On trend in wedding photography are details and candid moments. Of course there will always be looking at the camera and smiling, but those moments of gazing into each other’s eyes, laughing, tiny details that may otherwise be missed and the tears in moms eyes when she sees her daughter for the first time as a bride; those are the photographs that give life to your wedding for years to come.

Taste of the
White Sangria Punch Photography by Caroline Maxcy Fox
In contradiction to the name sake Sangria, which is named for its red color, making this refreshing drink with white wine makes perfect sense for the warmer months ahead. Pieces of mixed citrus fruits and berries are the perfect match for a crisp cocktail. The recipe is very versatile making it easily adaptable to your taste buds because you can’t go wrong when it comes to wine and fresh fruits.
Ingredients For both full-strength and virgin recipes, you'll need: • Citrus of some kind (oranges, lemons, limes) • Berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries) • Apples, peaches, grapes or other fruit on hand sliced thin, peel on For the full strength Sangria, you'll need: • 1 bottle white table wine of your preference • 1 bottle sparkling white wine (or ginger ale, tonic if you'd like the less-alcoholic version) • 3 oz. peach schnapps For the Virgin Sangria you'll need: • 1 bottle Citrus flavored soda, ginger ale or sparkling cider • 1 bottle apple juice or white grape juice Instructions Thoroughly wash all fruit and slice thin. Leave peels on for color and their delicious flavor! Pour in wine or juice and stir. Slowly pour in sparkling drink (champagne, soda or cider), peach schnapps (for the adult version), and any additional herbs you'd like to add. Refrigerate, covered, for at least 3 hours. Serve over ice and enjoy!

Okeechobee County Welcomes the 2017
By Sharie Turgeon Photography by Sharon Cannon
Heartland LIVING April May 2017
O
keechobee County Tourist Development Council was honored to host the 2017 Bassmaster Elite Series on February 23-26, 2017. The event was held at the premiere fishing facility C. Scott Driver Park. This facility has seen a number of tournaments with anglers from all over the world. C. Scott Driver was the perfect venue for the professional anglers to come and take on Lake “O.” The pros knew that big fish would be caught in the A.R.E Truck Caps Bassmaster Elite at Lake Okeechobee. Any rumors about Lake Okeechobee not producing was disproved when Tyler Carriere weighed in a lunker on the first day, weighing in at 9 pounds 5 ounces that held on for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass event which awarded the rookie with $1,500.00. Timmy Horton of Muscle Shoals, AL, started Championship Sunday more than 8 pounds ahead of his nearest competitor. Although Horton struggled throughout the day, he held on tight to win his first championship in a decade. Horton was only able to bring 11 pounds, 7 ounces of Okeechobee largemouth to the scales on the last day, which pushed his total four-day weight to 83-5. His success topped second-place finisher Ott DeFoe of Knoxville, TN, by 1 pound, 4 ounces. Horton's last victory was at the 2007 Elite Series Champion's Choice on New York's Lake Champlain. It's been 10 years since the 11-time qualifier of the GEICO Bassmaster Classic, presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods, took home the trophy and $100,000 first-place prize. "Sunday was a very difficult day, no question about it," Horton said. "I'm so thankful and so very blessed that Thursday and Friday went as well as they did. If it weren't for those two heavy limits, I wouldn't have won."

"W
hen I arrived at my spot this morning, the wind and fishing pressure made the water a big mess," Horton said. "I knew catching the fish I needed to win from that location was a long shot, so I spent some time looking at a couple other locations and ended up deciding on Harney Pond." Harney Pond is a 30-mile run from Okeechobee, FL., on the southwest side of the lake. When Horton scrapped the game plan that had put him in the driver's seat the first three days, he was taking a big risk. "My family drove 13 hours to watch the final weigh-in and I really felt like I had let them down," he said. "I literally walked on stage thinking DeFoe had me beat, but it ended up that my 11-pound limit was the most beautiful 11 pounds I've ever caught." „

A
n emotional Horton said having his family present and sharing the final-day stage with good friend Ott DeFoe made this victory the best of his career. Horton won a Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open on Lake Okeechobee in 2004. He relied on this experience but kept an open mind as Florida's renowned big-bass factory has dramatically changed over the years.
Tim Horton
"Everything I weighed in this week was on a 4-inch Klone Crawsome in two colors: black/blue swirl and a black/red copper," Horton said. "I rigged the creature-style baits on a heavy-duty flipping hook beneath a ž- to 1-ounce weight depending on how thick the reeds were I was flipping to on 50-pound Bass Pro Shops XPS braid." Horton's rod of choice was an 8-foot Duckett Flip Stick, Gary Klein Edition, paired with a Lew's SuperDuty Speed Spool bait caster in an 8.0:1 gear ratio. On the final day, however, he made a few subtle changes. "Today I caught my fish on a 3/8-ounce tungsten weight rigged on 20-pound test Bass Pro Shops XPS fluorocarbon," he said. "I focused on Harney Pond because the water was a little bit clearer, which I felt required a different line selection, but the main presentation stayed the same." Rounding out the Top 12 were: Ott DeFoe (82-1), Cliff Prince (78-3), Fletcher Shryock (77-10), Greg Hackney (73-12), Dave Lefebre (73-0), Bobby Lane (72-10), Jason Williamson (69-10), Dean Rojas (68-14), Andy Montgomery (67-12), Stephen Browning (67-5) and Adrian Avena (63-14). DeFoe was awarded $1,000 for leading the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points race at the end of the event. Bobby Lane of Lakeland, FL, earned the Power-Pole Captain's Cash Award

orton earned $500 as the recipient of the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award. Aside from all the exciting weigh-in action, the Okeechobee County Tourist Development Council hosted the B.A.S.S. Bash event which accompanied the larger Bassmaster production. The B.A.S.S. Bash event welcomed 15 vendors that were service organizations, nonprofits as well as arts and crafts. The Gourmet Food Truck Expo brought 15 food trucks to the event that were a great hit with the Bassmaster staff and attendees. Okeechobee Main Street provided beer as a fundraiser and 1 Stop Party Shop provided an eating area and children’s activities.

The event brought approximately 6,000 people to Okeechobee County. The economic impact of this event has yet to be determined. But the quality of fish caught on the lake the week of the event proves that Lake Okeechobee continues to be one of the best fisheries in the United States. Okeechobee County looks forward to having the Bassmaster Elite Series return to our community for another successful tournament.

Orange Blossom Festival Photography by Jessica Pleger
Local farmers and vendors were on hand March 17 and 18 at Joshua Creek Citrus for the Orange Blossom Festival. The weather was perfect to enjoy local entertainment by Alligator Alley and Scattered Grass, wagon rides, bounce houses, local food and much more. Friendly local farmers were on hand to answer questions of our states sustainable agriculture at the “Shake The Hand That Feeds You Booth”. There was something for all ages to enjoy, especially the delicious citrus ice cream and the fresh squeezed juice. It was perfect way to spend time with the family; in an old Florida setting, in the middle of an orange grove.

Jacob Domer
"My family has been doing business
with Gilbert since the 20s because they keep the process transparent and always treat you with respect." A 7th generation Floridian, Jacob is an Okeechobee man through and through. His mama, Cindy, sums him up in one word, "Genuine - you can rely on him to always be truthful and respectful. I think he got that from his Daddy." Most people relate him back to his family's machine shop, Domer's, which he now co-owns and operates with his brother, Justin. He has worked at Domer's as long as he can remember. His brother, Justin, recalls him "running through the shop in diapers grabbing parts for customers." And it's experiences like that which make "family owned and operated" a reality at Domer's. If you can't ďŹ nd him in the shop, he is probably out on his boat. Hunting, ďŹ shing, or just riding the water, this is where Jacob spends his time when not providing excellent customer service at Domer's Inc.
