Is Scouting Relevant for Today’s Youth?

O

n occasions I will share my column with someone who has written a great story about their Scouting experience. Earlier this month I saw a posting on the Mic-O-Say Facebook page by Steve Madigan, an Eagle Scout from Troop 10 in Leawood, KS. Here’s what Steve had to say. “I’ve been thinking in the past few months since my Eagle board of review about my experiences in Scouting and what a lost treasure it has become. And my apologies if this is lengthy. It’s something that I don’t think gets enough notice from most outside of the program. Looking in from Day 1, Scouting in today’s society is almost countercultural. Even some of my best friends wouldn’t dare spend even one (let alone 11) nights outside at a camp. The reasons are too numerous to count — sports, videogames, girls, etc. I’ve always been peer-pressured into thinking Scouting is a dead program and that the values it teaches are outdated. Why waste your weekend in a tent in the middle of nowhere when you could be playing ‘Call of Duty’? A vast number of my classmates

form negative opinions about the program with literally no basis or thought. And that infuriates me and anyone else who’s been through or knows the program. If most people just took a few minutes to get to know someone who’s benefited, I think this would diminish greatly. I started Boy Scouts as a timid fifth-grader, like most. I had almost no social skills and didn’t know the first thing about work ethic. The decision to join was, admittedly, partly my mom’s, and I will never be able to thank her enough for it. This “countercultural” program that my classmates scorn has made me into a person I never would have become otherwise. I’ve grown more mature and professional from my time in the troop than in my 10 years of formal schooling combined. The experiences and skills that Scouting gives are vital, yet so many grow up without them. What are boards of review if not preparation for job interviews? Sure, they prove a point for Scout rank. But all of those times I sat before a group of new people, ready to make an impression, I gained that

much more experience in ways most my age will never. All those Scoutmaster conferences? Phone calls to assistant Scoutmasters for merit badges or such? I can’t even imagine how much easier that will make finding and keeping a good job later on. The courage to stand up for yourself rather than just sit and passively let whatever happens happen. It’s really a shame that so many people are so closed-minded about what is, in my opinion, the last real experience someone my age can have in this day. No pretty disguises or excuses. It teaches a solid work ethic, and looking forward to college and beyond, that is 1,000 times more important than knowing how to kick or throw a ball or shoot a pixel on your TV. This program truly is a gem, one whose beauty is lost on all too many. And it’s a real shame. I am, and proudly always will be, an Eagle Scout, a Warrior, and a leader. I’m

2015 Investment in Character Campaign Underway

I

nvestment in Character is our annual fundraising campaign that gives families, friends, alumni, business and community organizations the chance to support Scouting in the Heart of America Council. It allows the council to provide the resources necessary to make sure every youth can benefit from Scouting’s fun, exciting, adventure-filled activities that foster character, honesty, respect and life-long values. Why do we have an Investment in Character campaign? Each year, your $24 annual Scouting registration fee goes directly to the BSA’s national office. If a Scouting unit collects dues, that money stays with the unit. By investing in the Heart of America Council’s Investment in Character campaign, you make sure the necessary funds are available to:

GUARD OF HONOR Scouting was on display in front of a sold out crowd at Arrowhead Stadium on November 30 as Scouts from Troop 323 took center stage during the Kansas City Chiefs vs Denver Broncos game.

• Recruit and train youth and leaders • Provide assistance to those in need • Keep our camps and activities affordable 2015 IIC “Friendly” • Enhance programming and facilities Recognition Patches • Provide communication tools and a framework of organization for volunteer leaders Investment in Character contributions provide over 20% of the support the council receives each year. The success of Scouting depends on those who support it. Please help the Heart of America provide the resources necessary to make sure every youth has the opportunity to participate in Scouting. Your generous taxdeductible gift to the Boy Scouts of America provides direct funding for educational initiatives and active learning that program fees and unit dues do not cover — it is a statement about your belief in Scouting, our programs and properties. Please consider a 2015 gift at your unit’s Investment in Character presentation or donate online at www.hoac-bsa.org.

Trailhead Scout Named Top Popcorn Salesman for 5th Consecutive Year

While many Scouts have attempted to top Nick’s sales records, each seem to fall shy. Now of course his success would not be possible without the support of his parents Patrick and Cathy who will tell you from the second week in September through December, “it’s popcorn season!”

That’s right…Nicholas Kost has done it again! Nick knocked on over 2,400 doors and sold more than $7,000 in popcorn this year to claim his fifth consecutive top seller title.

We asked Nick what makes him a great salesman. His response…“Listen to my customers, thank them. Don’t get discouraged. Knock on every door.” Pretty sound advice for any Scout hoping to one day become our next top seller.

Through his impressive sales streak, Nick has earned a trip to the 2015 World Jamboree in Japan, has more than paid for his Scouting program and has learned some of the best salesmanship skills ever.

“Listen to my customers, thank them. Don’t get discouraged. Knock on every door.”

In Nick’s short popcorn career he has sold nearly $35,000 in popcorn all by himself.

CAMPING & PROGRAMS

INTERNATIONAL SCOUTING

Council Plans Contingent to Scotland

Host an International Scout in 2015 The H. Roe Bartle and Theodore Naish Scout Reservations will host international Scouts to serve as members of the camp staff this summer. The key to a successful experience for these Scouts will be caring host families. Host families are the critical link between the camp experience and the Scouts' American life experience. Prospective host families must be able to house the Scout prior to and after his or her camp staff assignment and provide transportation to the Scout’s respective camp. For more information contact Jeannie Salmon at jrsalmon@kc.rr.com or Peter Houston at phouston@sunflower.com.

Have you ever wanted to visit Scotland? The Council International Committee is planning a 2016 trip to attend the Blair Atholl Jamborette, a mini-jamboree style event in Scotland. The council will send two patrols, six Scouts each, to attend the event held on the grounds of Blair Castle in the summer of 2016. The length of the trip will be approximately 17 days. Scouts attending must be at least 14 years old at the time of the trip and no older than 18. Estimated cost is $1,500. For more information or to reserve your place, contact Peter Houston at phouston@sunflower.com or H. David Pendleton at Henry.D.Pendleton. ctr@mail.mil.

VENTURING New Equestrian Venturing Crew Interested in horses? Check out the new Crew 2829. Crew activities will be equine related and include horse judging, learning different riding techniques, tours to horse barns, and much more. The sponsor is Equestrian Heights of Kansas City and the group meets at Holsman Stable near Grandview. For more information contact Stephanie Regalia at Stephanie.regalia@scouting.org or (816) 896-6689 or Peter Grassl at pogbowman@gmail. com or (913) 481-5469.

Venturing Leadership Award Nominations The Venturing Leadership Award (VLA) is presented to youth who exemplify the highest standard of Venturing excellence. All nominations MUST be submitted to the Council Service Center on or before March 1, 2015. Download the nomination form at www.hoac-bsa.org/council-wide-venturing-events.

Medal of Honor Recipient Gives Lesson in American Heritage

R

etired Army Colonel and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Roger H.C. Donlon, visited with more than 20 Boy Scouts on December 6, 2014, at the National World War I Museum at the Liberty Memorial to help Scouts earn their American Heritage Merit Badge. One of the requirements for the American Heritage Merit Badge is for Scouts to interview two military veterans. Ret. Col. Donlon, the first recipient of the nation’s highest military award for valor during the Vietnam War, graciously volunteered to answer the Scouts’ questions at the semi-annual event. He also shared with the Scouts a World War I compass that his father had given to him when he was a Scout.

www.hoac-bsa.org/community-activities

Twice a year, the National World War I Museum gives Scouts the opportunity to earn the American Heritage Merit Badge. The next opportunity will occur on March 7, 2015. Due to limited classroom space, there is room for only 24 Scouts. Scouts who attend the day-long event receive a guided 90-minute tour of the museum, a patch designed by the museum and snacks. The cost for Scouts is $15. Contact H. David Pendleton to register at Henry.D.Pendleton.ctr@mail.mil.

Wood Badge is training for adult leaders from all Scouting programs. It provides participants with firsthand knowledge regarding how teams develop and achieve excellence. Participants take part in an active learning process through involvement in planning, development, presentation and assessment. Participants will enjoy a world-class learning experience that will strengthen their long-term commitment to Scouting and provide them with valuable leadership skills. Spring 2015 course will be held April 10-12 and April 24-26. Fall 2015 course will be held September 11-13 and October 2-4. Both courses we be held at the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation. Register today, space is limited!

DOE (Den Leader Outdoor Experience) — www.hoac-bsa.org/den-leader-outdoor-experience The purpose of D.O.E. is to help Cub Scout leaders become more aware of outdoor activities and help them use Cub Scout outdoor skills. SCOUTING HISTORY

SCOUTING HISTORY

H. Roe Bartle’s Philosophy on Camping By Andy Dubill, Council Historian

Heart of America Council

A

fter visiting Camp Dan Sayre in Noel, Missouri, new Scout Executive H. Roe Bartle quickly realized that he needed something more interesting and different to retain older Scouts. One of the keys to keeping younger Scouts entering the program was to keep the older role models interested in Scouting. The younger soon to be Scouts looked up to the older boys in school and church, and followed along their path. The Kansas City Council had camped at Noel, Missouri for several years and the novelty was beginning to wear off. Bartle was quoted in the 1929 summer edition of the Kansas City Scout as saying “I can’t look on a fellow as a true Scout unless he knows how to look after himself in the woods, can hump his pack, can find his way, can build his shack, can cook his grub, and can take his full share of work with the rest of the bunch — with always a smile and never a grouch.” The council was experimenting with a number of camps to allow the Scout to accomplish all of this in 1929.

Follow us

@HeartofAmericaCouncil.BSA

In 1929, the council offered the following camp experiences for older Scouts: ▶ ▶ ▶ ▶

C amp Roosevelt in Benedict, Kansas for older Scouts R otary Camp in Lee Summit, Missouri for African American Scouts C amp Keane at Bean Lake, Missouri for Sea Scouts C amp Swinney in Stover, Missouri for employed Scouts

Bartle would soon seek another alternative for the 1930 summer camp season to solve the council’s summer camp issues.

Thank you to Joe Don McGaugh, Jeff Tindle and Kevin Walden for all their help with the Good Scout Award Breakfast.

Troop 1414 Welcomes New Wood Badge Trained Leaders Phillip Smith and Nicholas Belmore, Troop 1414, Carrollton, were honored with their Wood Badge beads, neckerchief, Woggle, and certificate at their troop meeting on December 8. Congratulations to Phillip and Nicholas on their accomplishments!

Big Muddy Gets in the Christmas Spirit December was very active with Christmas parties all across the Big Muddy District. Santa even took some time out of his schedule to visit Pack 4324 in Richmond and Pack 4120 in Odessa spent some time making some Christmas cards for area nursing homes before opening presents.

Big Muddy Roundtable The Big Muddy District Roundtable meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month at the Lexington United Methodist Church. Please make sure your unit has someone there to pick up materials and relay information. Having that person make a report at the unit committee meeting is a great way for your unit to stay on top of upcoming events! January and February were very active with Pokitanou Chapter Elections.

2015 Day Camp Theme Revealed: “Knights In Training” The Blue Elk District Day Camp Staff is hard at working planning this summer’s “Knights in Training” Day Camp. Scouts will shoot BB guns and bows and arrows, work on badges and belt loops, learn about science and nature, and even scale our climbing tower. Going to camp is a wonderful part of the Cub Scouting experience and helps your pack earn Scouting’s Journey to Excellence and Summertime Pack Awards. The pack must provide leadership and adult supervision for their Cub Scouts who attend Day Camp, plus provide for transportation to and from camp. It is recommended that packs have at least one registered adult leader attend camp for every five to six Cub Scouts. Camp takes place rain or shine, is easy to sign up for, and provides a lifetime of treasured memories.

Online registration is now open at www.scoutcamping. org. Questions? Contact Raymond Miller, Day Camp Director, at (816) 229-4897 or BEdaycamp@gmail.com.

Cub Christmas Craft By Peter Muelleman, Blue Elk Public Relations Chair Coventry Baptist Church in Independence hosted the annual Cub Christmas Craft event on December 6. Cub Scouts and their families from Independence, Blue Springs, and Grain Valley created ornaments, cards, and other projects to celebrate the holiday season. Laura Milam, the organizer of the event, was pleased with the attendance and the efforts of her staff to bring new crafts to the Cubs every year.

Robbie Campbell helps his sons Noah and Jacob, Pack 326, create the perfect Christmas ornament.

Dalton M., Pack 546, receives some Christmas Craft pointers from Karen O’Riley.

Typically, Explorer Posts are centered on more traditional careers such as law enforcement, healthcare or aviation, but Explorer Post 816 concentrates on entrepreneurship. Another aspect of Explorer Post 816 is to visit other entrepreneurs to get insight on their busi-

ness. Explorers recently made a visit to Pinstripes in Overland Park on November 5. The students had the opportunity to meet with the company’s Founder and CEO, Dale Schwartz. Learn more about Exploring and Post 816 at www. exploringkc.org.

Post Explores Future of Medicine Kansas City, Kansas School District students received hands on experience in the Orthopedic Department at KU Medical Center on November 5. Students not only got to tour the department, but they were also able to see the history of bone replacements and how they are used today, see and touch a cadaver arm, and use simulation machines to practice drilling into a bone. Meet Our District Intern My name is Chrissy Hatcher and I am the Northern Tier District Intern. Currently, I am nearing the completion of my degree in Parks and Recreation Management from Northwest Missouri State University and plan to graduate in May of 2015. My dad is newly retired from the Army after thirty years of service which has given me an opportunity to live all over the world and experience various cultures. While I am new to Scouting, I have been learning a lot about the program and am enjoying this new experience in my life. When I am not working, I enjoy being outdoors, eating food, and spending time with my two dogs, KC and Chief.

Thanks For A Great Year Thank you for an outstanding 2014! We leave you with a picture of Shawnee Riverfront Park taken during Camporee 2014 at Shawnee Riverfront Park. We are looking forward to more fun ahead in 2015.

Eagles from Troop 394 Honored Three Eagle Scouts from Troop 394 in Shawnee received some good news in December…Each were nominated by their Congressman to attend a Military Academy in 2015. Shawn Bowen — Army, Alex Quinn — Navy, and Conner Galbraith — Air Force. They join another Eagle from Troop 394, Tony Broll, who recently graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Congratulations to these distinguished Eagle Scouts. Thank you for your service to our Nation!

District to Achieve Record Investment in Character Goal in 2015

With your support, Scouting helps ordinary kids become extraordinary adults. John Rowe is chairing our 2015 Family Investment in Character campaign. During the months of February, March and April, each unit in the Pelathe District is asked to provide time for a brief presentation at a Blue and Gold, Court of Honor or any other meeting well attended by families. This presentation explains how the Heart of America Council is funded and provides an opportunity for families to contribute. Please welcome and support your Investment in Character presenter as they do their crucial job. The Pelathe District needs everyone’s support to reach our $32,000 Family Campaign goal in 2015.

Scouting for Food — A Pelathe Scouting Tradition for 29 Years Scouting for Food is a long-standing tradition in the Pelathe District. This April will mark the 29th year that Scouts have conducted a one-day, district-wide food drive to help the less fortunate. In 2014, more than 10,000 food items were collected by our Scouts on a single day. Make plans now to participate as a pack, troop, team or crew. If you are in Lawrence, plan to have someone at the March Roundtable to re-confirm the area that you would like to cover. Plan to pick up you fliers and bags at the April Roundtable. Distribute the fliers to let your neighbors know about the project and then return on April 11 to collect the food. If you have questions about Scouting for Food contact John Scott at (785) 542-3510 or john3scott@aol.com.

Help Webelos Scouts Continue Their Scouting Adventure The transition from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts is a time when we as Scout leaders have tremendous opportunity. It is crucial that we work with parents to help them understand the importance and benefits of crossing over to Boy Scouts.

Include the future Scoutmaster in the recognition ceremony. Consider providing a Boy Scout handbook to each graduating Webelos. Encourage parents to become involved with the troop as a way to continue to be a part of their son’s Scouting adventure. • If graduating Webelos Scouts have sold popcorn, consider transferring funds to his new troop. • At the Blue and Gold Banquet, take both individual and group photos of your graduating Webelos and post them on the Pelathe District Facebook page.

The experiences of Cub Scouting establish a foundation that we can build upon through Boy Scouting and into their adult lives. Please be sure that each graduating Webelos has that opportunity.

One of the more interesting ways to hold an Eagle Board of Review

Scouting with Satch, Dizzy and the Duke Troop 1292, chartered by the American Jazz Museum in the historic 18th and Vine District learns Scouting skills at their meetings surrounded by the history of Jazz and Negro Leagues Baseball Legends such as Duke Ellington and Satchel Paige. Troop 292’s Scoutmaster, Reggie Hill, believes in the importance of bridging the history of the 18th and Vine District with Scouting in the lives of these young men.

Champions in Football and Scouting Scoutmasters often hear from parents and Scouts that sports and other after-school activities get in the way and that is a reason why many who join Scouting don't stay in the program. But don’t tell these Eagle Scouts that. Here are 9 Eagle Scouts from the Shawnee Mission East Football Team, 2014 Kansas 6A State

Recharter Reminder Annual unit re-charters for 2015 were due no later than January 31. If your unit has yet to complete the recharter process, please contact Senior District Executive, John Hobbs at john.hobbs@scouting.org to complete ASAP. Furthermore, please contact us if you know of anyone looking to grow Scouting in our communities. We are looking for individuals that want to lead new packs, troops & crews in Twin Rivers.

Setting the Vision at our Annual Business Meeting Our Annual District Business Meeting was held on January 6. At the meeting, the district officers and members-at-large were elected. The Twin Rivers District Chairman for 2015 is Doug Furnell and the District Commissioner is Peter Meline. For the complete list of district officers visit www.hoac-bsa.org/ twin-rivers-district-leadership. District leadership is elected annually at our business meeting for one-year terms. The district committee serves the district as volunteers at great personal sacrifice, often in addition to responsibilities in their home units. The Scouts and Scouters of Twin Rivers owe a debt of gratitude for the service rendered by all who have served in the past, who now serve and who will serve the district in the future.
